  1. We're going to begin by singing in Psalm 9, as we begin our worship. Psalm number 9,

  2. and that's on page 208, the tune is Argyle. We're singing verses 1 to 9.

  3. Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart, thy wonders all proclaim. In thee, most high,

  4. I'll greatly joy and sing unto thy name. When back my foes were turned, they fell and perished

  5. at thy sight, for thou maintain'st my right and cause on throne sat judging right. Verses 1 to 9,

  6. in Psalm number 9, Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart. Please stand if you're able to.

  7. Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart, thy wonders all proclaim.

  8. Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart, thy name. When back my foes were turned, they fell and

  9. and perished at thy sight. When back my foes were turned, they fell and perished at thy sight.

  10. Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart, thy name. When back my foes were turned, they fell and perished at thy sight.

  11. For thou may take thy light and cause on throne sat judging right.

  12. The heathen love renewed in us, the wicked overgrown.

  13. Thou hast to doubt there in such way,

  14. In heaven or beyond.

  15. O heavenly love, destruction, O heavenly love, destruction, O heavenly love, destruction,

  16. O heavenly love, destruction, O heavenly love, earth, and earth.

  17. By the heart, thy name.

  18. The heaven and earth.

  19. Thou hast to doubt there in such way,

  20. And there in such way,

  21. In heaven or heaven,

  22. Thou hast to doubt,

  23. In heaven or heaven,

  24. Thou hast to doubt there in such way,

  25. O challenger for any love,

  26. for judgment set his throne,

  27. in righteousness to judge the world,

  28. justice to give each one.

  29. God also will a refugee for those that are oppressed,

  30. a refugee shall be in times of trouble to discuss.

  31. Let's all unite now in prayer.

  32. Let's call upon the Lord in prayer.

  33. Let's call upon the Lord in prayer.

  34. Gracious and eternal God, as we gather once more in your presence,

  35. we give thanks for the encouragement these words have given us,

  36. that you always prove to be a refuge to your people,

  37. and that you remain to be the God who is constant, who endures forevermore,

  38. who deals justly with all the circumstances that we find ourselves in,

  39. and especially with us in all our circumstances,

  40. as indeed everybody else in the creation.

  41. And we give thanks, Lord, tonight that we gather before you as the God who is sovereign and wise

  42. and all-powerful and loving in his loving kindness continues to remember us as your people.

  43. Lord, we thank you for every opportunity we have to gather together in your name,

  44. for every way in which we find encouragement mutually with each other,

  45. to bring before the Lord our concerns in prayer,

  46. to sing his praises and to hear his word.

  47. And we thank you tonight that we form part of a great number throughout the world,

  48. and that we indeed, O Lord, also are conjoined with those who are already in heaven,

  49. for their praise of you, their worship of you,

  50. is essentially the same as that we have for ourselves,

  51. although theirs is perfect, while ours is still flawed.

  52. We thank you that they sing your praises as the God of redemption, as we do here,

  53. that they are conscious of you as the God whose worthiness

  54. far exceeds our ability to contemplate in its entirety,

  55. and we thank you tonight, Lord, that as you are worthy of our worship,

  56. so we are pleased to render to you this sacrifice of praise.

  57. All power and glory belongs to you.

  58. There is none else who has the rights that you have to be praised,

  59. and there is none else to be worshipped but the Lord God.

  60. Lord, we give thanks that you have impressed upon us

  61. these aspects of your own being as they are revealed in your word,

  62. your own sovereignty and holiness and love and affection and commitment to your people.

  63. Indeed, everything, Lord, that you have revealed in your word about yourself,

  64. we know is entirely true.

  65. And we ask tonight for grace to receive the teaching of your word about you and about ourselves.

  66. Help us also to read the events of our own lives and our own time in the light of your word.

  67. Help us, Lord, to once again appreciate that the principles that apply to each generation of the world

  68. as it goes on in its course until you return,

  69. that they are all opposite and all relevant to our age also.

  70. And we thank you tonight, O Lord, for every way in which you deal with us,

  71. different to what we deserve.

  72. We give thanks that you are the God who forgives sin,

  73. who receives repentant sinners to yourself,

  74. who establishes them, Lord, in your family.

  75. For it is one thing for us to consider that our sin is forgiven,

  76. that our guilt is no longer held against us.

  77. But it is a step further for us to admire the fact of your adoption,

  78. that you receive your people, those whom you save, into your own spiritual family,

  79. and that you continue to provide for them in that regard as their Father in heaven.

  80. Bless us, Lord, we pray every announcement of the gospel.

  81. Help us to appreciate that through the preaching of the gospel you have promised great things,

  82. that it is through hearing of your word that faith comes.

  83. And we pray that our faith tonight will be strengthened as we meet together here in your name.

  84. Bless us, Lord, we pray, in all that we engage in as a congregation.

  85. Bless us in all our efforts to make your name known in our community.

  86. Bless us in all the activities that we engage in,

  87. that we seek, Lord, to be a means of furthering the gospel,

  88. of furthering our own knowledge of you.

  89. And to that end, bless, we pray,

  90. all the activities and the services that we anticipate on this coming week.

  91. We pray that they be blessed to us in all ages.

  92. We pray again for our children.

  93. We ask for them, O Lord, that you would establish them further in your ways and in the way of following you.

  94. And help them, Lord, we pray, as we pray for them to be characterized in their own lives by the fear of God,

  95. by respect for you and by faith and trust in you.

  96. Lord, bless to them the teaching they receive in their homes,

  97. in Sunday school and Bible class and in tweenies and in other ways.

  98. And we thank you for all who give so willingly of their time to teach our young people.

  99. We thank you for all our youth leaders and pray that you would bless them, O Lord,

  100. as they commit themselves so willingly and diligently to this work.

  101. And we ask that you bless all who contribute to the well-being of the congregation in different ways.

  102. We thank you for the variety of gifts that we represent,

  103. acknowledging that they are by your appointment,

  104. by your blessing, by your own arrangement and wisdom.

  105. We pray that by your grace we might be able to use our individual gifts

  106. in conjunction with one another,

  107. so that we will, as we should,

  108. function as a congregation of your people

  109. in holding forth your word as the word of life.

  110. We pray your blessing, Lord,

  111. tonight on all whom we know who belong to us

  112. as a congregation who has special needs at this time,

  113. especially in your providence,

  114. as we find many in the congregation who are ill at this time.

  115. Bless them, Lord.

  116. We pray at home or in hospital or in hospice.

  117. Grant your blessing to them, Lord,

  118. as they wait for further developments.

  119. And bless those, we pray,

  120. who are recovering from treatment,

  121. from surgery of various kinds.

  122. Bless those who are ill with mental health issues as well.

  123. We commit them, Lord, to you and ask us,

  124. we pray for them,

  125. that you would help them in these situations

  126. in which they find themselves in their minds,

  127. that you would grant to them, Lord,

  128. a sense of assurance in knowing yourself.

  129. We pray, too, for those who mourn loved ones,

  130. those who have lost loved ones in recent days

  131. and in times gone by.

  132. We pray that your blessing, Lord,

  133. will comfort them and establish them

  134. in the knowledge of your ways

  135. and in the grace that is able to upbind

  136. their own broken hearts.

  137. We pray, too, for those who are nearing death,

  138. who are seriously or even terminally ill.

  139. We ask, O Lord, for your blessing

  140. to prepare them as we all must be prepared

  141. to take that great step out of time

  142. and into eternity.

  143. We pray that you would furnish them

  144. with the necessary grace, O Lord,

  145. that that journey may be taken in peace

  146. and to the everlasting rest

  147. of the Lord and of his kingdom.

  148. We pray for our world at this time, Lord,

  149. and the various ways in which turmoil

  150. and anxiety and distress

  151. is found in so many places.

  152. And we pray especially tonight

  153. for those, Lord, who are beset with war

  154. and with the tragedies of war

  155. and the difficulties

  156. and the deprivations that war brings.

  157. We think of the situation in the Middle East

  158. and we commit that to you

  159. and ask, O God,

  160. that you would bring about a means of peace,

  161. a means by which people will be established

  162. not in hatred for each other

  163. but in the ways of peace and of righteousness.

  164. Remember the Jewish people.

  165. We know that while all the peoples of the world

  166. to some extent have the gospel set before them,

  167. whether they be Islamic or Jewish or otherwise,

  168. Lord, we pray especially for them as a people

  169. for so many of your promises

  170. are bound up with them and in them.

  171. And we pray at this time

  172. that even the troubles that they experience

  173. as a nation, Lord,

  174. that by your blessing

  175. they might prove to be a means

  176. by which they come to recognize their Messiah

  177. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  178. And we ask for all who are active

  179. in mission toward them

  180. that you would be pleased

  181. to bless their efforts.

  182. Bless all the agencies, Lord,

  183. that we know of

  184. who stand for the principles

  185. and the values of the gospel

  186. and of those moral values

  187. that emanate from it.

  188. Remember the Christian Institute.

  189. Remember Christian Concern.

  190. Remember the work of Road to Recovery

  191. here locally

  192. and in other places in the country.

  193. Remember Safe Families.

  194. Remember every other similar agency, Lord,

  195. that seeks to do good to those around us,

  196. to those who are in need.

  197. And to be pleased, we pray,

  198. to bless all who are engaged in that work.

  199. And so continue with us now

  200. as we wait upon you here.

  201. And as we, Lord,

  202. seek to set these things before you in prayer,

  203. we confess our sins,

  204. we confess our unworthiness,

  205. we confess our need,

  206. we confess, O Lord,

  207. that once again we need to know

  208. the assurance of our sin forgiven

  209. and to continue in a repentant frame of spirit

  210. throughout all our days.

  211. Hear us, we pray,

  212. for Jesus' sake.

  213. Amen.

  214. Now we're going to praise God once again,

  215. this time in Psalm 57.

  216. This time it's in the Sing Psalm,

  217. Psalm 57.

  218. That's on page 74 to Tune Selma.

  219. And we're singing verses 1 to 5.

  220. Have mercy on me, Lord,

  221. to you my soul holds fast.

  222. Your covering wings will shelter me

  223. until the dangers pass.

  224. I cry to God most high,

  225. to God who answers me,

  226. for he fulfills his purposes

  227. for me most perfectly.

  228. Psalm 57 and verses 1 to 5.

  229. To God's praise.

  230. Amen.

  231. Have mercy on me, Lord,

  232. to you my soul holds fast.

  233. Your covering wings will shelter me

  234. until the dangers pass.

  235. I cry to God most high,

  236. to God who answers me,

  237. for he loses his purposes,

  238. for me most perfectly.

  239. He sends his help from heaven

  240. and saves me from the heart.

  241. I cry to God most high,

  242. to you my life,

  243. for senses to come above.

  244. I live with savage peace,

  245. I dwell with thy own strong,

  246. with men whose keep with piercing words

  247. a sharp sword is their tongue.

  248. above the highest end,

  249. O God exalted be,

  250. and over, holy and below,

  251. display your majesty.

  252. Now let's turn to read from God's word

  253. in the book of Acts,

  254. Acts of the Apostles,

  255. in chapter 12.

  256. And let's read down through

  257. the whole of the chapter.

  258. Acts chapter 12.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  259. About that time,

  260. Herod the king laid violent hands

  261. on some who belonged to the church.

  262. He killed James,

  263. the brother of John,

  264. with the sword.

  265. And when he saw that it pleased the Jews,

  266. he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

  267. This was during the days of unleavened bread.

  268. And when he had seized him,

  269. he put him in prison,

  270. delivering him over to four squads of soldiers

  271. to guard him,

  272. intending after the Passover

  273. to bring him out to the people.

  274. So Peter was kept in prison,

  275. but earnest prayer for him

  276. was made to God by the church.

  277. Now when Herod was about to bring him out,

  278. on that very night,

  279. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,

  280. bound with two chains,

  281. and sentries before the door

  282. were guarding the prison.

  283. And behold,

  284. an angel of the Lord stood next to him,

  285. and a light shone in the cell.

  286. He struck Peter on the side

  287. and woke him, saying,

  288. Get up quickly.

  289. And the chains fell off his hands.

  290. And the angel said to him,

  291. Dress yourself and put on your sandals.

  292. And he did so.

  293. And he said to him,

  294. Wrap your cloak around you

  295. and follow me.

  296. And he went out and followed him.

  297. He did not know

  298. what was being done by the angel,

  299. that what was being done by the angel was real,

  300. but thought he was seeing a vision.

  301. When they had passed the first

  302. and the second guard,

  303. they came to the iron gate

  304. leading into the city.

  305. It opened for them of its own accord.

  306. And they went out

  307. and went along one street,

  308. and immediately the angel left him.

  309. Now when Peter came to himself,

  310. he said,

  311. Now I am sure that the Lord

  312. has sent his angel

  313. and rescued me

  314. from the hand of Herod

  315. and from all that the Jewish people

  316. were expecting.

  317. When he realized this,

  318. he went to the house of Mary,

  319. the mother of John,

  320. whose other name was Mark,

  321. where many were gathered together

  322. and were praying.

  323. And when he knocked at the door

  324. of the gateway,

  325. a servant girl named Rhoda

  326. came to answer.

  327. Recognizing Peter's voice,

  328. in her joy,

  329. she did not open the gate,

  330. but ran in and reported

  331. that Peter was standing at the gate.

  332. They said to her,

  333. You are out of your mind.

  334. But she kept insisting

  335. that it was so,

  336. and they kept saying,

  337. It is his angel.

  338. But Peter continued knocking,

  339. and when they opened,

  340. they saw him and were amazed.

  341. But motioning to them

  342. with his hand to be silent,

  343. he described to them

  344. how the Lord

  345. had brought him out of the prison.

  346. And he said,

  347. Tell these things to James

  348. and to the brothers.

  349. Then he departed

  350. and went to another place.

  351. Now when day came,

  352. there was no little disturbance

  353. among the soldiers

  354. over what had become of Peter.

  355. And after Herod searched for him

  356. and did not find him,

  357. he examined the sentries

  358. and ordered that they

  359. be put to death.

  360. Then he went down

  361. from Judea to Caesarea

  362. and spent time there.

  363. Now Herod was angry

  364. with the people of Tyre and Sidon,

  365. and they came to him

  366. with one accord,

  367. and having persuaded

  368. Blastus the king's chamberlain,

  369. they asked for peace

  370. because their country

  371. depended on the king's country

  372. for food.

  373. On an appointed day,

  374. Herod put on his royal robes,

  375. took his seat upon the throne,

  376. and delivered an oration to them.

  377. And the people were shouting,

  378. the voice of a God

  379. and not of a man.

  380. Immediately

  381. an angel of the Lord

  382. struck him down

  383. because he did not give glory,

  384. God the glory,

  385. and he was eaten by worms

  386. and breathed his last.

  387. But the word of God

  388. increased

  389. and multiplied.

  390. And Barnabas and Saul

  391. returned from Jerusalem

  392. when they had completed

  393. their service,

  394. bringing with them John,

  395. whose other name

  396. was Mark.

  397. May the Lord again bless to us

  398. reading this portion

  399. of his word.

  400. Before we turn to

  401. some aspects of this passage,

  402. let's sing again,

  403. singing Psalm 142,

  404. 142,

  405. that's on page 186,

  406. singing to a tune,

  407. Finart.

  408. I cry for mercy to the Lord,

  409. to him I lift my voice in prayer.

  410. Before the Lord I bring my plea,

  411. to him my trouble I declare.

  412. Each time my spirit faints in me,

  413. you are the one who knows my way.

  414. For in the path on which I walk,

  415. a hidden snare for me they lay.

  416. Singing on to the end of the Psalms,

  417. Psalm 142,

  418. I cry for mercy to the Lord.

  419. I cry for mercy to the Lord,

  420. to him I lift my voice in prayer.

  421. Before the Lord I bring my plea,

  422. to him my trouble I declare.

  423. Each time I sit,

  424. it hints in me,

  425. You are the one who knows my way.

  426. For in the path on which I walk,

  427. a hidden snare for me they lay.

  428. To my right and landing note,

  429. There is not one God sent for me.

  430. I love no refuge,

  431. I love no refuge,

  432. No one cares for me in my adversity.

  433. I cry for mercy to the Lord.

  434. I cry for mercy to the Lord,

  435. I cry aloud to you, O Lord.

  436. You are my hiding place in sight.

  437. You are the one sustaining me.

  438. You keep me in the land of life.

  439. Lord, listen to my guide for help,

  440. For I am an extra strategy.

  441. Save me from those who seek my life,

  442. Because they are too strong for me.

  443. So that I may give thanks to you,

  444. From prison's darkness set me free,

  445. The righteous men will gather round,

  446. Because you've shown your love to me.

  447. Well, let's turn for a short time to Acts chapter 12.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  448. Acts chapter 12,

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  449. Particularly the words of verse 12,

  450. Though we can read verse 5 as well.

  451. So we'll read verse 5 and then verse 12.

  452. So Peter was kept in prison,

  453. But earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

  454. In verse 12,

  455. When he realized this,

  456. He went to the house of Mary,

  457. The mother of John,

  458. Whose other name was Mark,

  459. Where many were gathered together

  460. And were praying.

  461. You recall last time,

  462. As we continued this short series of studies

  463. On the gathered church

  464. And certain aspects of what is

  465. True about the church,

  466. As gathered together in the name of Christ.

  467. We saw last time how important it is

  468. That our gathering is in order to listen

  469. To the voice of God.

  470. One aspect among many,

  471. But an important one nonetheless,

  472. As we saw last time.

  473. That we are gathered to listen to the voice of God

  474. Speaking to us from his word,

  475. Through the blessing of the Holy Spirit we trust,

  476. So that we hear the voice of God

  477. Preeminently not the voice of any human being,

  478. Though that of course is the means,

  479. The conveyance of the Bible's teaching.

  480. But there are other aspects of our gathering together

  481. In God's name,

  482. Such as we are this evening,

  483. That are important and mentioned for us frequently

  484. In the scriptures.

  485. There are two especially,

  486. And that these two are prayer and praise.

  487. And we are going to look at these in turn,

  488. Looking at tonight,

  489. The importance of the church gathered together

  490. For prayer or in prayer.

  491. And we are looking at this chapter especially

  492. As the context in which we are seeing

  493. The church at prayer.

  494. That will be our first point.

  495. The church at prayer and the circumstances

  496. In which we find the church there together praying.

  497. And then secondly we will look at a couple of the benefits

  498. That come to us from gathering together

  499. For prayer and in prayer as God's people,

  500. As God's church.

  501. Now it is significant here,

  502. The church at prayer is significant in the chapter

  503. Twice here you find in these verses

  504. We have mentioned verses 5 and 12

  505. That it is the church that is mentioned as praying.

  506. It is not just individuals,

  507. Obviously the church is comprised of individuals,

  508. But the emphasis here is very firmly

  509. On the church as the church.

  510. Gathered together for prayer.

  511. And that is important in the context of Acts especially

  512. You will find it elsewhere in the Bible

  513. But Acts as you know

  514. Is the book that tells us about the development

  515. Of the early New Testament church.

  516. The spreading out of the gospel

  517. Beyond Jerusalem into the regions around

  518. And eventually really into the world

  519. Into the Gentile world.

  520. And in the difficulties that were faced

  521. By the church at that time

  522. It was so important that prayer was emphasized

  523. As an essential element in the church's gatherings

  524. And that prayer is seen in these passages

  525. This one and others

  526. To be a feature of the church gathered together.

  527. It wasn't enough that they would go home

  528. And pray in their own homes

  529. As they undoubtedly did.

  530. It was important that the church as it was seen

  531. And living as the church of God

  532. That it was a church engaged in prayer.

  533. The gospel message met as it did here

  534. With much opposition, with persecution

  535. As we will see in a moment.

  536. But that was all the more a context for prayer

  537. For the church at prayer

  538. To actually engage in prayer

  539. As they sought to present the gospel

  540. And reach out with the gospel

  541. To the world around them.

  542. And you can see this elsewhere

  543. In the book of Acts as well

  544. That prayer was so important to the church

  545. Chapter 2, verse 42

  546. Chapter 4 from verse 24 onwards

  547. Chapter 6, verses 1 to 6

  548. The election of what came to be known as deacons

  549. Chapter 13, verses 1 to 3

  550. The appointment of those who were going to mission

  551. To go into a specific mission

  552. All of these activities and situations

  553. Were times not just for individuals to pray

  554. But for the church to be together in prayer

  555. The gathered church at prayer

  556. Now of course here we have a specific context

  557. As one of persecution

  558. Here is Herod exercising his authority

  559. And first of all causing James

  560. The brother of John to be put to death

  561. To be killed with the sword

  562. And then he set his sights on Peter also

  563. He was the next in line to be killed

  564. But meantime he just couldn't go through

  565. With it immediately

  566. It was a time of unleavened bread

  567. So instead of killing him on the spot

  568. Or putting him to death

  569. He put him into prison

  570. Caused him to be guarded in prison

  571. And this of course is part of the context

  572. Of the book of Acts

  573. That indeed all the way back into

  574. The time of Jesus himself as well

  575. That the figure of Jesus

  576. The teaching of Jesus

  577. The authority of Jesus

  578. The way that Jesus was attracting so many

  579. To follow him

  580. For the state

  581. That was a great challenge

  582. And here now in the days of the apostles

  583. The political world of the day

  584. Sees the church as a great threat

  585. A threat to its authority

  586. A threat to its hold on people

  587. And along with that you have

  588. An obvious spiritual hatred

  589. For the king of the church

  590. As he is presented in the gospel

  591. It is that spiritual hatred of the heart

  592. That really comes to the fore

  593. As much as anything political

  594. And you can translate that

  595. Into the world in which you and I

  596. Are living today

  597. Because that same threat

  598. Or at least is perceived as a threat

  599. By the state

  600. When the state becomes

  601. The controlling factor over people's lives

  602. And we are not against actually

  603. Complying with the state

  604. When that is biblical to do so

  605. The powers that be

  606. As Paul says in Romans 13

  607. Are ordained of God

  608. And we have to give due place

  609. To the state

  610. To those powers that God

  611. In the civil and political world

  612. Has appointed

  613. But then the state

  614. Very often steps out of line

  615. It is not true to God

  616. Sometimes it is a persecuting state

  617. Sometimes it comes to express

  618. It is hated for the church

  619. And for the gospel

  620. And for what the church stands for

  621. Even to the extent

  622. Sometimes of persecution

  623. And you will find it very difficult

  624. In our own context today

  625. As a nation

  626. In some places at least

  627. To actually stand out rightly

  628. For the gospel

  629. It is going to meet

  630. Not just with hostility

  631. But what really

  632. Amount to persecution

  633. And some people

  634. Have ended up being imprisoned

  635. And some people find

  636. That even authorities

  637. Like the powers of law and order

  638. And the police service

  639. Sometimes overstep the mark

  640. And actually cause

  641. That kind of difficulty

  642. For people who are simply

  643. Being through

  644. Without in any way

  645. Being violent

  646. Or seeking to press

  647. People into decisions

  648. They don't want to take

  649. Still it is the gospel

  650. It is Jesus

  651. It is the voice of God

  652. It is the church

  653. Presenting the claims of Christ

  654. And the world does not like that

  655. And never will

  656. As long as it is the world

  657. And there are of course

  658. Thousands throughout the world

  659. Today in prison

  660. Because they are Christians

  661. Because they are true to Jesus

  662. Because they want

  663. The message of Christ proclaimed

  664. Because they are concerned

  665. That people will come

  666. To know him for themselves

  667. That they will come to have him

  668. As their saviour too

  669. And that of course

  670. Is met with great hostility

  671. Especially as a secularist view

  672. Of life increases in our own nation as well

  673. Well that is in a sense by the way

  674. But that is the world

  675. That is the context

  676. In which you find this chapter set

  677. And these incidents

  678. But you see here in verse 5

  679. Peter was kept in prison

  680. But earnest prayer for him

  681. Was made to God by the church

  682. The church made it its business

  683. And exercised its privilege

  684. To pray to God

  685. You see the contrast very clearly

  686. In that verse

  687. Peter was kept in prison

  688. The state had the power

  689. Of closing the gates of the prison

  690. Of keeping Peter imprisoned

  691. Of actually shutting him up

  692. So he couldn't speak publicly at all

  693. So the prison was closed

  694. The gates were shut

  695. It was firmly held fast

  696. But the gates of heaven were open

  697. And the church knew

  698. That the gates of heaven were open

  699. And how did the church exercise

  700. Its knowledge

  701. Of knowing that the gates of heaven

  702. Were open

  703. By praying

  704. By coming to exercise

  705. Their right and their privilege of prayer

  706. They gathered together

  707. For earnest prayer

  708. Specifically for Peter

  709. At that point

  710. That is what the church did

  711. That is what the whole

  712. Of the church at the time did

  713. And so you find the same in verse 12

  714. When Peter had

  715. By the agency of the angel

  716. Come to be released from prison

  717. He went to the house of Mary

  718. The mother of John

  719. Whose other name was marked

  720. And then notice

  721. Where many were gathered together

  722. And were praying

  723. Where many were gathered together

  724. And were praying

  725. It's obvious from the way it's put there

  726. That that meeting

  727. That that meeting was specifically for prayer

  728. That that gathering was for prayer

  729. For Peter particularly

  730. But I'm sure they prayed for other things as well

  731. But it's a meeting specifically for prayer

  732. They were gathered together

  733. And were praying

  734. They were in the act of praying

  735. They were busy praying

  736. They were praying together as a church

  737. As a people

  738. Collectively

  739. They were praying

  740. They were praying

  741. They were praying

  742. They were praying

  743. I remember one of my

  744. Most wonderful experiences

  745. Was in Korea

  746. At the time of attending

  747. An early morning prayer meeting

  748. And that early morning prayer meeting

  749. Is a prayer meeting

  750. They have every single day

  751. In the congregations in Seoul in Korea

  752. And the congregation that we went to

  753. Had something like 90 or 100 people

  754. If I remember rightly

  755. That had gathered at that time in the morning

  756. At half past five in the morning

  757. It was still dark

  758. And they all gathered in the church there

  759. And the pastor led them

  760. For the opening prayer

  761. Then he knelt down himself

  762. Behind a lectern

  763. Or a pulspot at the beginning

  764. At the one end of the church

  765. And as he knelt down

  766. All the lights in the church

  767. Were then switched off

  768. And prayer started

  769. And everybody prayed

  770. Where they were

  771. It seemed strange to us

  772. Who were there

  773. Because we don't normally pray

  774. Where everybody prays at the same time

  775. And for a start

  776. It sounds a little bit disorganized

  777. But actually you get used to it

  778. And what really strikes you

  779. Is the fervency of the prayer

  780. That's going on around you

  781. And we of course ourselves

  782. Attempted to be engaged in prayer as well

  783. And prayed for various things

  784. Before the Lord

  785. But the remarkable thing is

  786. That at that time in the morning

  787. These people had a burden

  788. To gather together for prayer

  789. It was their practice

  790. It was their custom

  791. It was the church in prayer

  792. And that's all that went on

  793. For that whole hour

  794. Or however long it was

  795. When people finished prayer

  796. Their own prayer

  797. They went out quietly

  798. But the meeting carried on

  799. Until the last person

  800. Finished praying

  801. If we set a prayer meeting

  802. For 5.30 in the morning

  803. From tomorrow onwards

  804. Would you and I

  805. Be burdened enough to attend?

  806. Would we come to that meeting

  807. That meeting

  808. That regularly?

  809. There's a question

  810. But this church here

  811. In the days of the apostles

  812. They were gathered together

  813. And were praying

  814. And it appears from

  815. All that you read in this chapter of Acts

  816. That this was not something

  817. They did every month

  818. And it wasn't even something

  819. That they did with regard

  820. To a specific need

  821. Such as the imprisonment of Peter

  822. It was something

  823. That regularly

  824. They engaged in

  825. As time went on

  826. Week by week

  827. Day by day

  828. And that's the kind of thing

  829. We must attend to ourselves

  830. I'm absolutely persuaded

  831. That it's a mark

  832. Of the health of any church

  833. As to how frequently

  834. They come together to pray

  835. Not just how frequently

  836. People pray in their own homes

  837. Or individually

  838. As I hope we all do

  839. But how often

  840. And how much

  841. Do we come together to pray?

  842. We have meetings

  843. Specifically for prayer

  844. Set on the first Monday

  845. Of each month

  846. We have one each Saturday

  847. On a weekly basis

  848. But we need to actually attend

  849. To how many attend

  850. Why we don't have so many attending

  851. As we should

  852. Why is there just a few

  853. Out of the membership

  854. Of the church

  855. That you have less than 20 people

  856. At a monthly prayer meeting

  857. Even when it's conveniently

  858. Held on Zoom?

  859. Is it because it's not the right time

  860. For most people?

  861. Is it because the time

  862. Isn't just suitable?

  863. Or is it that we don't have

  864. In our hearts

  865. A sufficient burden

  866. To be together

  867. To pray?

  868. To pray

  869. I'm putting that as a challenge

  870. To myself

  871. But it's a challenge

  872. To us as a congregation

  873. Isn't it?

  874. That we really need

  875. To focus

  876. More than we're doing

  877. On being gathered together

  878. Specifically to pray

  879. I know that our Wednesday meeting

  880. Has a limited time for prayer

  881. Because there's also

  882. Bible exposition

  883. Which in its own right

  884. Is important

  885. But the meetings we have

  886. Specifically for prayer only

  887. And for people to be together

  888. To pray

  889. To pray

  890. Whether it's in person

  891. Or by means of Zoom

  892. Or whatever

  893. The point I'm making is

  894. This friends

  895. We will not go very far

  896. Unless we have this desire

  897. This burden

  898. To be gathered together

  899. To pray

  900. To pray as a people

  901. To pray congregationally

  902. To pray

  903. With corporate prayer

  904. As much as we do

  905. In gathered prayer

  906. In individual prayer as well

  907. So there's something

  908. To consider from this passage tonight

  909. Where is my own desire

  910. In relation to what I find

  911. In this passage

  912. Of this church

  913. In the days of the apostles

  914. The days of the apostles

  915. Actually burdened to be together

  916. Specifically to pray

  917. The more we do that

  918. And it's not a matter of just doing it

  919. For its own sake

  920. We have to pray that the Lord

  921. Will give us the burden to be there

  922. We have to pray that the Lord

  923. Will impress upon us

  924. How important a feature that is

  925. Of the life of the church

  926. It's basic to our spiritual health

  927. It's basic to our growth

  928. As a congregation

  929. Growth not just numerically

  930. But especially growth spiritually

  931. And as we'll see later

  932. That's such an important issue

  933. In the book of Acts itself

  934. So there's the first thing

  935. The church at prayer

  936. Is it a specific situation?

  937. Yes

  938. It's specific to the needs of that time

  939. But all of that impresses upon us

  940. How much we ourselves should

  941. Have this as a principle

  942. And as a practice

  943. That as a church

  944. We come together

  945. Not just to praise the Lord

  946. In singing

  947. Not just to hear and listen

  948. To the voice of God

  949. But also specifically

  950. To pray to Him

  951. To let our voice be heard in heaven

  952. And to come to place before the Lord

  953. As is our privilege

  954. The things the Lord lays on our hearts

  955. To pray for

  956. To put before Him

  957. The church at prayer then

  958. So what are the benefits

  959. Of the church being gathered together for prayer?

  960. Well I'm going to mention two

  961. That are more than that as well

  962. First of all

  963. It contributes to our unity in the faith

  964. It contributes to our unity in the faith

  965. We read in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  966. From the beginning of the chapter

  967. Again there's Paul as a prisoner of the Lord

  968. And saying

  969. Bear with one another in love

  970. Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit

  971. In the bond of peace

  972. And so on

  973. He says there to maintain the unity of the Spirit

  974. The Spirit of God creates the unity that God's people enjoy

  975. But we are charged to maintain to look after that unity

  976. The unity that the Spirit creates

  977. The unity certainly that we are dependent on the Spirit for the maintaining of

  978. But it's not without prayer

  979. And one of the beauties of prayer is that we urge the Lord

  980. We pray to the Lord

  981. To maintain that unity

  982. To bless us as a people

  983. As a corporate body of people

  984. As witnesses to Christ in the world

  985. So you see as we come together to pray

  986. Yes we pray

  987. As I keep saying individually

  988. At home that's a great privilege for us as well

  989. We pray at times when we are gathered virtually

  990. And I know that that's a means by which people are able to

  991. Take part in meetings that they can't otherwise physically be at

  992. For good reason and of course we accept that

  993. But wherever we can and whenever we can be gathered together physically for prayer

  994. Here is one great advantage of it

  995. That it actually contributes to our unity in the faith

  996. Because there is where we pray together

  997. As we pray together

  998. What are we praying for?

  999. We're praying for growth

1000. We're praying for others besides ourselves

1001. We're praying together for specific needs of the church

  1002. Or of the congregation

1003. We're praying for the advance of the gospel

1004. We're praying for the church at large

1005. We're praying for the congregation in its settings

1006. We're praying in confession of our sins

  1007. We're listening to others

1008. And joining with them as they confess their sins

1009. And we confess our individual sins to God

1010. We pray for our children

1011. We pray for the blessing of God on our children

1012. We pray as we collectively gather together

1013. It's a wonderful thing to hear together of people

1014. Actually engage together in prayer

1015. Even if it's just one person that's actually speaking

1016. We're collectively engaged in our minds along with that

1017. And setting out our desires and putting out amen to that

1018. We're praying for the nation

1019. We pray for all the things God lays upon our hearts

1020. What a great privilege it is for us

1021. To gather together specifically to pray

1022. To be able, as God has enabled us

  1023. To give that time

  1024. To give that time

  1025. And it's

1026. Amongst all our other burdens

1027. Amongst all our other duties in the world

  1028. It's not

1029. A large portion of our time

1030. That we are to give to prayer collectively

  1031. It's only an hour

  1032. Or at the most

1033. Or at the most two hours a week

1034. Or at the beginning of each month

1035. Where is that in relation to

1036. The time we give to other things

1037. Even things other than our necessary duties

  1038. And family or whatever

1039. Maybe a good exercise for myself

  1040. And for yourselves

1041. To draw up a little sheet

1042. And put down in that sheet

1043. The number of hours we spend doing certain things

1044. Whether it's actually watching television

  1045. Being on Facebook

1046. But put a column there

1047. As to the number of hours we spend

  1048. In a month let's say

  1049. In collective prayer

1050. That will be quite revealing I'm sure

1051. And quite challenging as well

1052. Well what we're saying is that

  1053. That collecting

  1054. Collective prayer

  1055. The gathered church

1056. As it gathers to pray

1057. Is such an important feature

  1058. In its health

1059. In its witness to God

1060. And in our building of one another up

1061. Collectively in the faith that is in Christ

  1062. Now the issues

1063. The issues that are most emphasized in the Bible

1064. And especially in the New Testament

1065. The issues that are specified

  1066. Most or most specified

  1067. As issues for prayer

  1068. Are actually spiritual

  1069. Not material

1070. You look at Paul's epistles

1071. Look at the glimpses he gives us

1072. In these passages in some of his epistles

1073. That tell us about what he was praying for

1074. And he's revealing to these churches

1075. And whether it's Ephesus or Colossae

1076. Of the kind of things that he was praying for

1077. Again let's just think of Ephesians

  1078. In chapter 3

1079. And from verse 14 onwards there

  1080. Where he says this

  1081. For this reason

1082. I bow my knees before the Father

1083. From whom every family in heaven and on earth is named

1084. That according to the riches of his glory

1085. And then he goes on to specify what he's praying for

1086. That he may grant you to be strengthened with power

1087. Through his spirit in your inner being

1088. So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith

1089. And that you being rooted and grounded in love

1090. May have strength to comprehend with all the saints

1091. What is the breadth and length and depth and height

1092. And to know the love of Christ

  1093. That surpasses knowledge

1094. That you may be filled with all the fullness of God

1095. You see the things he's praying for

  1096. He's praying for

  1097. He's praying for the church's strengthening

1098. For the church's growth in their appreciation of the love of Christ

1099. And all the way through

1100. He tells us these spiritual things

1101. That he sets before God in prayer

1102. And is now revealing to the church

1103. This is what I'm praying for

1104. And he's saying this is what you yourselves

1105. Are actually to be committed to as well

1106. So it contributes to our unity in the faith

1107. But secondly, the benefits of gathering together

1108. Connects us with God at work

1109. It connects us with God at work

  1110. Because God answers prayer

  1111. Now just in passing

1112. I want to mention verse 15 there

  1113. It's interesting there, it's quite revealing

1114. That when news was brought to the meeting

1115. That Peter had actually been released from prison

1116. They told Rhoda, you're out of your mind

1117. No, that's not possible, he's in prison

1118. No way he's getting out of prison

1119. Just now, how could he possibly have gotten out?

1120. Of course, they were praying for one thing

1121. They were praying for Peter

1122. And yet when it came to the point of his release

1123. They weren't prepared to believe it

  1124. That it was true

1125. And it reminds us that we are to pray expectantly

  1126. As God enables us

1127. That we're not to pray certain things

  1128. Leave them with God

1129. And then not exercise our minds believingly

  1130. Or expectantly

1131. He was a church at prayer

1132. And yet, even in the days of the apostles

1133. They weren't prepared to accept

1134. That their prayers had been answered

  1135. Or answered that quickly

  1136. That's in the passing

  1137. But it's important

1138. But what is it that follows from their prayer?

1139. How did God answer the church at prayer?

  1140. Well, in two things

1141. First of all, in Peter's release

1142. And then secondly, in the death of Herod

1143. The man who had actually organized

  1144. And in his authority

1145. Had taken pleasure in putting James to death

  1146. And Peter in prison

1147. As you go through the chapter

1148. As we read through it

1149. All of a sudden he died

1150. Just as he was in the midst of

  1151. A great oration

  1152. And in his pomposity

1153. And in the regal splendor of his gowns

1154. As he spoke there to the people

1155. He was struck down by an angel of God

1156. And he was eaten of what I'm saying

  1157. Some internal

  1158. Condition

1159. Which led very quickly to his death

  1160. Here he was

1161. The voice of a God

1162. And not of a man

1163. And this is going on as the church

1164. Was praying for their situation

  1165. And praying for Peter

  1166. And praying for themselves

1167. And all of a sudden

1168. The person who was most instrumental

1169. In putting Peter in prison

  1170. Is dead

1171. Is part of God's answer

  1172. They didn't pray that

1173. Herod would just fall down dead

1174. Doesn't appear to be the case anyway

1175. Some of them might have wished that

  1176. But in any case

  1177. That's the result

  1178. That's how God

  1179. In his wisdom

  1180. Answered their prayers

  1181. And Peter was free

  1182. And Herod is dead

  1183. And both of these

1184. As elements in answer to prayer

1185. Fit the purpose of God

1186. And what is the purpose of God?

  1187. Well it's in verse 24

1188. But the word of God

  1189. Increased and multiplied

  1190. You see the contrast

  1191. That word but

1192. You find it there in verse 5

1193. Peter was kept in prison

  1194. But

1195. Ernest prayer was made by the church

  1196. Here is

  1197. Herod's threatening

1198. But the word of the Lord

  1199. Increased and multiplied

  1200. That was God's purpose

1201. That is actually what happened

1202. And many revivals in the history of the church

  1203. Have come about

  1204. Through times of persecution

1205. That were accompanied by or involved

1206. The church turning to prayer

1207. The church turning to prayer

1208. The church turning to prayer

1209. People gathering together for prayer

  1210. One of the greatest

  1211. Tragedies or events

1212. In the church in our own nation

  1213. Took place in 1662

1214. What's known as the Great Ejection

1215. When nearly 2,000 Puritan preachers

1216. Were ejected from their congregations

1217. Because they weren't prepared to sign up

1218. To what was called the Act of Uniformity

1219. Where they would have to comply with the state

1220. In terms of what was set out in the Book of Common Prayer

1221. And other things that accompanied that

1222. Well, I don't need to go into detail

1223. But that's what they were

1224. The state trying to force them to do that

1225. They said, no, we can't do that

1226. So they were ejected from their congregations

1227. But you see that led to a great volume of prayer

1228. And it didn't just happen that immediately God answered these prayers

1229. But many take the view that the revival

1230. The evangelical revival that broke out

  1231. Especially in the 1730s to 1740

1232. Not just in this country

1233. But also in North America as well

1234. The Great Awakening as it was called

1235. Out of the view that that itself

1236. Was an answer to the church at prayer

1237. And the church at prayer following a time of persecution

1238. God hears his praying people

  1239. Worldly persecution

1240. Cannot prevent the gospel's advance

1241. When it's in the mind of God to advance it

1242. Nothing is going to actually interfere with that

1243. Nothing is going to prevent that

  1244. What happened here

1245. The word of God increased and multiplied

1246. You see, that's the very thing that Herod was trying to prevent

1247. That's what he was trying to stand against

1248. By putting James to death

1249. And putting Peter in prison

1250. There was Herod exercising authority

1251. And saying pretty much that

1252. I'm not going to allow this message, this gospel

1253. These people to interfere with my reign, with my authority

1254. With the state's power, with the secular state's power

  1255. This is gone

  1256. Herod's gone

1257. God's listened to his people

1258. The very thing that Herod tried to prevent

1259. Is the very thing that happened

1260. In the providence of God

1261. The word of God increased and multiplied

  1262. Not only was Herod

1263. And those who helped him

1264. Unable to prevent it happening

1265. But it was just the opposite

1266. Of what he was trying to do

1267. He was trying to stamp out the influence of the word of God

1268. And of the apostles and of the church

  1269. That advance

1270. And it didn't just fail

1271. It actually led to an increase

  1272. In the word

  1273. Multiplying

  1274. Throughout these regions

  1275. But it didn't happen

1276. Without the church gathered for prayer

1277. And that's the point that I want to finish on

  1278. That's the point we've been laboring

1279. All the way through our study tonight

  1280. Everything that happened here

1281. The word of God increasing

  1282. The demise of Herod

  1283. None of that happened

1284. Without the church at prayer

1285. And the lesson for us is that

1286. When the church is collectively

1287. And wholeheartedly engaged in prayer

  1288. Things happen

1289. Because God hears that volume of prayer

1290. God hears every individual prayer

1291. That's sincerely offered to him

  1292. Thanks be to God

1293. But here and elsewhere in the Bible

1294. The church gathered to pray

1295. Is something that is emphasized

  1296. Something that's significant

1297. Something that has historically led

1298. By God's blessing to results

  1299. To further blessing

  1300. To the gospel's increase

1301. To God's church being strengthened

1302. Friends, I need not tell you that

1303. The days in which we are living

1304. Are perilous times for the gospel

1305. There are so many things that

1306. Are being brought out as threats

  1307. To the gospel's advance

1308. And yes, we need to go home

1309. And pray about that individually

1310. We need to be doing that all the time

1311. But the more the church sees the threat

1312. Of the world to the gospel

1313. The more the church sees the world

1314. The state seeking to clamp down

1315. And indeed to bring the gospel

  1316. To nullify its effects

1317. The more you and I should be persuaded

1318. We need to get together to pray

1319. We need to be like the church

1320. In the book of Acts

1321. That actually come realizing that God

1322. Hears his people as they pray

1323. And expectantly set our concerns

1324. Our prayers, our desires before God

1325. As the church at prayer

1326. The church engaged in prayer

  1327. You know, prayer is

1328. Surely one of our greatest privileges

1329. And being collectively gathered together to pray

1330. Is a privilege along with that

1331. It's our privilege to come individually

  1332. And speak to God

1333. It's our privilege to be together

  1334. To share together

  1335. To hear together

1336. To have all of that

1337. Those features of gathered prayer

1338. What a great privilege that is

1339. When the world is concerned

1340. To be together so often

  1341. For worldly purposes

1342. When today you would have had

  1343. Thousands of people

  1344. Gathering together

  1345. At different sporting events

1346. I'm not decrying sporting events

  1347. Though we would rather

1348. They were not on the Lord's Day

1349. But there's the commitment of the world

  1350. To following their agenda

  1351. Where is ours

1352. For the agenda of the gospel

  1353. For the church's proclamation

  1354. For the truth

1355. For God's name to be glorified

1356. For ourselves as a church

  1357. To be strengthened

1358. By the grace of God

1359. Well, may God bless these thoughts

1360. On his word to us

1361. Let's conclude by singing again

  1362. In Psalm 57

  1363. I'd given verses 1 to 3

1364. Which is a mistake really

  1365. It's Psalm 57

  1366. But the final verses

  1367. I'm sorry

  1368. If that complicates things

  1369. For the presenter

  1370. It's the same

  1371. The same psalm

1372. So it'll fit the tune that he's chosen

  1373. The tune is Martyrdom

1374. But if we sing from verse 5

  1375. Sorry, from verse 7

  1376. Verse 7

  1377. My heart is fixed

  1378. My heart is fixed

  1379. My heart is fixed

  1380. O God

  1381. I'll sing and praise

  1382. My glory wake

  1383. Wake, wake, psaltery heart

  1384. Myself I'll early raise

1385. I'll praise thee among the people

  1386. Lord

1387. Among nations sing will I

  1388. For great to heaven

  1389. Thy mercy is

1390. Thy truth is to the sky

  1391. O Lord

  1392. Exalted be thy name

1393. Above the heavens to stand

1394. Do thou thy glory far advance

1395. Above both sea and land

1396. These verses 7 to the end of the psalm

  1397. To God's praise

  1398. My heart is fixed

  1399. My heart is fixed

  1400. O God

  1401. I'll sing and praise

  1402. My glory wake

  1403. With saundry heart

  1404. With saundry heart

  1405. Myself I'll early raise

1406. I'll praise thee among the people Lord

1407. My nations sing will I

1408. My nations sing will I

  1409. For great to heaven

  1410. Thy mercy is

1411. Thy truth is to the sky

  1412. O Lord

  1413. Exalted be thy name

1414. O Lord exalted be thy name

1415. Above the heavens to stand

1416. To love thy glory far

1417. To love thy glory far advance

1418. Above both sea and land

1419. I'll go to the main door after the benediction

1420. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

1421. The love of God the Father

1422. And the communion of the Holy Spirit

1423. Be with you now and evermore

  1424. Amen
