  1. Verse 21, verse 13 begins saying,

  2. But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord,

  3. at an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love.

  4. Answer me in your saving faithfulness.

  5. And so on.

  6. As I said earlier, this is our third time looking at this psalm, third of four.

  7. So the next one will come to a conclusion.

  8. And as we've seen going through this psalm,

  9. David is obviously in great distress and great turmoil in his situation.

  10. He's surrounded by enemies in so many different ways.

  11. And there's mocking going on.

  12. He's suffering.

  13. He feels overwhelmed and sinking in the midst of it all.

  14. We've seen that he came with a cry of trouble.

  15. The psalm opens with these words,

  16. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.

  17. There's obviously just something major going on around him.

  18. He has a confession himself.

  19. He's looking not at just others around him.

  20. He's looking within himself and looking and seeing the faults within his own heart.

  21. But he's crying out in the midst of that,

  22. Don't let me be a stumbling block in any way to those who are your people

  23. or those who would become your people,

  24. that my witness would not fail.

  25. And then the last time we were looking at this psalm,

  26. we saw how his focus is towards God.

  27. He remembers who he's praying to.

  28. He recognizes the reproach, the unjust suffering he is going through.

  29. It's all because, as we saw, for his seal for God.

  30. He's not turning his back on God.

  31. He's not allowing, although he feels overwhelmed,

  32. he's not allowing the people to defeat him in any way.

  33. His focus is always towards God.

  34. He is close to God.

  35. That's a great reminder to ourselves that we need to be close to God ourselves at all times.

  36. Because when we feel these times of being overwhelmed,

  37. if we have been distant from God in the good times,

  38. how are we going to be able to draw near to God when the going gets tough, as it were?

  39. So we are to be faithful and close to God at all times.

  40. As I mentioned as well, this psalm, it's not just a psalm about David.

  41. It's not just a psalm about his suffering.

  42. It's a psalm that points us forward to the New Testament

  43. and always pointing us to the Lord Jesus Christ and his suffering.

  44. And it's something we want to further reflect on this evening,

  45. the suffering of Jesus in the midst of the suffering of David as well.

  46. And especially as we think of approaching a communion weekend in just over a week,

  47. we want to always be preparing our hearts as we come to worship God.

  48. But especially at a time of communion when we are focused on the death of Christ,

  49. the cross of Christ.

  50. We are always focused on that.

  51. But when we take communion, we are remembering his death in that particular way

  52. as we take the bread and take the wine.

  53. This psalm is a prayer, a prayer that David is offering up.

  54. And although we would always love to have nicely polished prayers

  55. and eloquent prayers where everything just flows from us,

  56. we know so often that that is not the case.

  57. We know so often we can come even as David is coming here,

  58. just where everything seems to be just overwhelming him.

  59. As we saw before, there's almost like there's not much structure in this psalm.

  60. He's just jumping from one thing to another.

  61. And yet as you go through this psalm,

  62. especially as we come to the last part of it,

  63. you see that as he's coming near, although he seems disorganized in the start,

  64. there is always this just coming in towards God.

  65. God calming him.

  66. God reassuring him.

  67. God comforting him.

  68. And eventually, as we'll see, he comes praising God.

  69. And that's really what prayer does.

  70. Even when we feel distracted, even when we think we're disorganized so much,

  71. prayer can calm us as we come close to God.

  72. So we come to that point where we praise him,

  73. that he is with us and that he hears our prayer.

  74. And especially so as we come just to look at Christ,

  75. to gaze on the beauty of Christ,

  76. to see the cross of Christ

  77. in all the reality, in all the horror.

  78. And yet there he died for sinners,

  79. that we might have life and have peace through him.

  80. So we continue to see the situation of David here.

  81. And just as we come into verse 13,

  82. verse 12 just reminds us of the situation he was in.

  83. I am the talk of those who sit in the gate

  84. and the drunkards make songs about me.

  85. The gate was a place where so many of the people met.

  86. It was like a council chamber almost.

  87. The important people would gather there

  88. and they would talk about all the different things that were going on.

  89. So they were all talking about David,

  90. the important people.

  91. But also, it says the drunkards,

  92. even the drunkards are making songs about me.

  93. He was the talk of the town,

  94. ridiculed in so many ways.

  95. But look at what it says in verse 13.

  96. But as for me,

  97. my prayer is to you,

  98. O Lord.

  99. And so there's two things we want to see this evening.

  100. First of all,

  101. we're going to see,

  102. again,

  103. just the cry of David.

  104. The cry

  105. and then the cup.

  106. The cry and the cup.

  107. His cry,

  108. but also his portion at this time.

  109. And we'll see just how that ties in with our Lord Jesus.

  110. His cry

  111. and the cup he had to bear

  112. for us.

  113. When you read through verse 13

  114. down to verse 18,

  115. you see there

  116. David's prayer

  117. just pouring his heart out

  118. to God.

  119. And it seems in some ways

  120. to start

  121. in a calm kind of way initially.

  122. Yes,

  123. that there's much trouble.

  124. He's crying out

  125. to my prayer

  126. to be heard,

  127. O Lord.

  128. But he says,

  129. at an acceptable time.

  130. It's almost like,

  131. I don't want to trouble you

  132. just now,

  133. God,

  134. but

  135. at an acceptable time,

  136. O God,

  137. in the abundance

  138. of your steadfast love,

  139. answer me

  140. in your saving.

  141. faithfulness.

  142. He seems

  143. quite composed.

  144. But then,

  145. the further down you go,

  146. verse 16,

  147. he's saying,

  148. answer me,

  149. Lord,

  150. O Lord,

  151. for your steadfast love

  152. is good.

  153. So again,

  154. maybe just a little bit

  155. more haste here,

  156. but he's still

  157. focused on

  158. the love

  159. of God.

  160. God.

  161. But then,

  162. you see,

  163. in verse 17,

  164. the end of verse 17,

  165. he's saying,

  166. hide not your face

  167. from your servant,

  168. for I am in distress.

  169. Make haste

  170. to answer me.

  171. So it's almost like

  172. he's just going

  173. through this,

  174. in your own time,

  175. God,

  176. answer me,

  177. and then make haste

  178. and answer me.

  179. What's keeping you?

  180. But he's not

  181. losing hope

  182. in it.

  183. And what we find

  184. is that

  185. he is still

  186. specific in prayer

  187. and focusing

  188. on prayer

  189. and again,

  190. it's just different

  191. ways that we can

  192. pray ourselves.

  193. We pray

  194. the Lord's prayer

  195. each Sunday

  196. and we pray

  197. the Lord's

  198. will be done.

  199. There's a sense

  200. of patience

  201. in that prayer.

  202. your will be done.

  203. We'll wait

  204. on your will.

  205. But that doesn't mean

  206. that there isn't

  207. occasions

  208. when we plead

  209. with God,

  210. when we come

  211. with a sense

  212. of urgency

  213. to God,

  214. when we need

  215. almost an answer

  216. immediately.

  217. We see it

  218. throughout the Psalms

  219. and in other prayers

  220. in the scriptures.

  221. The psalmist says

  222. in other places,

  223. make haste,

  224. come quickly.

  225. All of these

  226. kind of prayers

  227. are offered up

  228. to God

  229. where the sense

  230. is,

  231. we need you

  232. now.

  233. We almost

  234. don't have time

  235. to wait.

  236. We need you

  237. now.

  238. And so it's a

  239. reminder to us

  240. that we can

  241. pray in this

  242. way as well.

  243. Specific

  244. prayers

  245. to God.

  246. God.

  247. And it doesn't

  248. mean that

  249. he'll give us

  250. exactly what

  251. we're asking

  252. for every

  253. time.

  254. But we

  255. plead with

  256. him for an

  257. answer.

  258. And that

  259. he'll give

  260. what we

  261. need.

  262. And this

  263. is an

  264. example,

  265. as we see

  266. as you go

  267. through this

  268. Psalm,

  269. where David

  270. perhaps isn't,

  271. his prayer

  272. isn't answered

  273. just as he

  274. wants it.

  275. because you

  276. see,

  277. he's not

  278. removed from

  279. the situation

  280. of his

  281. enemies being

  282. around him

  283. and slandering

  284. him.

  285. But what we

  286. see as we

  287. go on is he

  288. comes to a

  289. point where

  290. he's able to

  291. praise God.

  292. God gives

  293. him what he

  294. needs for

  295. this occasion.

  296. Not to remove

  297. the situation,

  298. but to calm

  299. him in it.

  300. And so

  301. it's okay

  302. for us to

  303. plead earnestly

  304. to God.

  305. If you look

  306. at the New

  307. Testament and

  308. instructions and

  309. prayer in the

  310. New Testament,

  311. you notice

  312. Jesus teaches

  313. a parable.

  314. A parable in

  315. Luke 18 and

  316. verse 1 where

  317. it says,

  318. and he told

  319. them a parable

  320. to the effect

  321. that they ought

  322. always to pray

  323. and not lose

  324. heart.

  325. And he uses

  326. the example of

  327. a widow who

  328. keeps bothering

  329. a master.

  330. And in verse

  331. 5 it says,

  332. yet because

  333. this widow kept

  334. bothering me,

  335. I will give

  336. her justice so

  337. that she will

  338. not beat me

  339. down by her

  340. continual coming.

  341. Jesus is there

  342. talking about

  343. prayer.

  344. That if we

  345. almost keep

  346. pleading to

  347. God in prayer,

  348. we don't lose

  349. heart in prayer

  350. that yes,

  351. he relents

  352. and answers

  353. our prayer.

  354. And this is

  355. based on who

  356. God is.

  357. And that's

  358. how David

  359. is coming

  360. to God

  361. in prayer

  362. at all times.

  363. He's not losing

  364. hope,

  365. he's not losing

  366. faith in God.

  367. You see it in

  368. verse 16,

  369. answer me O

  370. Lord for your

  371. steadfast love

  372. is good.

  373. According to

  374. your abundant

  375. mercy,

  376. turn to me.

  377. He knows

  378. who he's

  379. praying to.

  380. He knows

  381. God is a

  382. God of

  383. steadfast love,

  384. an unchanging

  385. love.

  386. And he's a

  387. God of

  388. mercy,

  389. abundant

  390. mercy.

  391. So he

  392. knows God

  393. can give.

  394. And so he

  395. keeps coming

  396. to him in

  397. this way.

  398. Never do you

  399. see him

  400. coming and

  401. say,

  402. well,

  403. I'll do it

  404. myself,

  405. Lord.

  406. You're not

  407. doing it in

  408. my time or

  409. my way.

  410. I'll just

  411. have to do

  412. it myself.

  413. Even when

  414. he's asking,

  415. come in

  416. haste,

  417. make haste

  418. to answer

  419. me,

  420. he's saying,

  421. hide not your

  422. face from

  423. your servant.

  424. He's not

  425. saying,

  426. I'm going

  427. to do it

  428. myself.

  429. He's always

  430. saying,

  431. Lord,

  432. I know

  433. only you

  434. can do

  435. it.

  436. Answer

  437. in your

  438. acceptable

  439. time.

  440. Answer

  441. me.

  442. Make haste

  443. to answer

  444. me.

  445. All these

  446. different

  447. situations,

  448. he's still

  449. trusting

  450. God.

  451. Because he

  452. knows who

  453. God is.

  454. He knows

  455. what God

  456. is able

  457. to do.

  458. And as you

  459. see in

  460. verse 18,

  461. it's talking

  462. there about

  463. the God

  464. who is able

  465. to redeem.

  466. Throw an

  467. ear to

  468. my soul,

  469. redeem me,

  470. ransom me

  471. because of

  472. my enemies.

  473. You see,

  474. David pleads

  475. with God

  476. because he

  477. is the

  478. one who

  479. is able

  480. to redeem,

  481. able to

  482. save,

  483. able to

  484. ransom.

  485. And both

  486. these words

  487. tie in

  488. with what

  489. we have

  490. in Christ.

  491. David

  492. pleads

  493. that he

  494. would be

  495. redeemed

  496. by God

  497. and God

  498. heard his

  499. prayer.

  500. And we

  501. know it

  502. for ourselves

  503. today

  504. that God

  505. is the

  506. one who

  507. can redeem

  508. and ransom

  509. us.

  510. And how

  511. do we

  512. know that?

  513. Well,

  514. it's because

  515. we look

  516. to the

  517. cross.

  518. As we

  519. read in

  520. Matthew

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  521. chapter

  522. 27,

  523. what we

  524. see with

  525. Jesus on

  526. the cross

  527. crying out,

  528. my God,

  529. my God,

  530. why have

  531. you forsaken

  532. me?

  533. Why?

  534. To redeem

  535. his people,

  536. to ransom

  537. his people,

  538. to pay

  539. the price

  540. for us.

  541. he's

  542. standing

  543. in our

  544. place.

  545. He's

  546. bearing

  547. our

  548. sin.

  549. He's

  550. redeeming

  551. his

  552. people.

  553. So

  554. that's how

  555. he cries,

  556. my God,

  557. my God,

  558. why have

  559. you

  560. forsaken

  561. me?

  562. To

  563. redeem

  564. his

  565. people.

  566. God,

  567. there's

  568. a story

  569. used many

  570. years ago

  571. to illustrate

  572. the meaning

  573. of redemption.

  574. There's

  575. the story

  576. of a

  577. minister

  578. of a

  579. church

  580. in

  581. America,

  582. in

  583. Boston,

  584. in

  585. America.

  586. Outside

  587. the church

  588. one day,

  589. he met

  590. this young

  591. boy coming

  592. along the

  593. street,

  594. and the

  595. boy had

  596. a cage,

  597. a rusty

  598. old cage,

  599. and inside

  600. the cage

  601. were several

  602. birds,

  603. sort of

  604. just

  605. flapping

  606. around

  607. in distress,

  608. wanting

  609. out of

  610. the cage.

  611. And the

  612. minister

  613. asked the

  614. boy,

  615. where did

  616. you get

  617. those

  618. birds?

  619. And the

  620. boy replied,

  621. I trapped

  622. them out

  623. in the

  624. field.

  625. And so

  626. the minister

  627. asked,

  628. what are

  629. you going

  630. to do

  631. with them?

  632. And he

  633. says,

  634. well,

  635. I'm going

  636. to take

  637. them home

  638. and I'll

  639. play with

  640. them for

  641. a wee

  642. while,

  643. and I guess

  644. I'll feed

  645. them to

  646. the old

  647. cat at

  648. home.

  649. And the

  650. minister's

  651. reply was,

  652. to offer

  653. to buy

  654. the

  655. birds.

  656. The boy

  657. was surprised,

  658. why would

  659. you want

  660. these birds?

  661. They're

  662. just useless

  663. old birds.

  664. They don't

  665. even sing,

  666. look at

  667. them.

  668. And the

  669. minister was

  670. adamant,

  671. no, I

  672. want to

  673. buy these

  674. birds,

  675. I'll give

  676. you two

  677. dollars,

  678. which was a

  679. lot of

  680. money at

  681. that time.

  682. And the

  683. boy was

  684. surprised,

  685. why on

  686. earth would

  687. you want

  688. to give

  689. me that

  690. kind of

  691. money?

  692. And he

  693. says to

  694. them,

  695. you're

  696. getting the

  697. bad deal

  698. here,

  699. but I'll

  700. take your

  701. two dollars,

  702. you take

  703. the birds.

  704. So they

  705. did the

  706. exchange.

  707. And the

  708. minister took

  709. the cage out

  710. to the back

  711. of the church,

  712. a garden with

  713. trees out the

  714. back of the

  715. church,

  716. and immediately

  717. he released

  718. the birds.

  719. And the

  720. birds flew up

  721. into the sky,

  722. into the

  723. trees,

  724. and there

  725. they were

  726. singing and

  727. chirping away.

  728. The next

  729. Sunday he

  730. took the

  731. empty cage

  732. into the

  733. pulpit and

  734. used it as

  735. an illustration.

  736. he talked

  737. about Christ

  738. coming to

  739. seek and

  740. to save

  741. the lost,

  742. and how

  743. he paid

  744. for his

  745. people,

  746. the ransom,

  747. he redeemed

  748. his people

  749. by his

  750. precious

  751. blood.

  752. And he

  753. said,

  754. this young

  755. boy told

  756. me the

  757. birds couldn't

  758. sing,

  759. but as

  760. soon as I

  761. released them,

  762. they started

  763. to sing.

  764. And he

  765. was saying

  766. it's a

  767. reminder to

  768. us all

  769. that we

  770. are captive

  771. to sin.

  772. We have

  773. no joy

  774. to sing

  775. when we

  776. are captive

  777. to sin.

  778. But when

  779. we see

  780. that Christ

  781. has paid

  782. the ransom,

  783. Christ has

  784. redeemed us,

  785. when we

  786. come to

  787. know that

  788. and to

  789. experience

  790. that,

  791. our

  792. cry

  793. is changed

  794. from a

  795. pleading

  796. to a

  797. praise.

  798. Instead

  799. of,

  800. Lord,

  801. answer me,

  802. answer me

  803. in your

  804. time,

  805. answer me,

  806. answer me

  807. in haste,

  808. we will

  809. come

  810. praising.

  811. God is

  812. able to

  813. change

  814. our

  815. cry

  816. from one

  817. of pleading

  818. to praise.

  819. That's the

  820. wonder of

  821. the price

  822. that God

  823. has paid

  824. for us.

  825. To redeem

  826. us,

  827. to ransom

  828. us,

  829. he gave

  830. himself.

  831. himself.

  832. So we

  833. see first

  834. then the

  835. cry.

  836. The second

  837. thing we

  838. see here

  839. is the

  840. cup.

  841. And we

  842. see that

  843. in verse

  844. 19 to

  845. verse

  846. 21.

  847. Here it

  848. says,

  849. you know

  850. you know

  851. my reproach

  852. and my

  853. shame

  854. and my

  855. dishonor.

  856. My

  857. foes

  858. are all

  859. known to

  860. you.

  861. Reproaches

  862. have broken

  863. my heart

  864. so that I

  865. am in

  866. despair.

  867. I looked

  868. for pity,

  869. but there

  870. was none

  871. for

  872. comforters,

  873. but I

  874. found none.

  875. They

  876. gave me

  877. poison

  878. for food

  879. and for

  880. my

  881. thirst.

  882. They

  883. gave me

  884. sour

  885. wine

  886. to drink.

  887. Here is

  888. the

  889. experience

  890. of the

  891. psalmist

  892. David.

  893. This is

  894. his cup

  895. as we

  896. would say.

  897. This is

  898. his portion,

  899. his circumstances

  900. at this

  901. time.

  902. This is

  903. what he

  904. has to

  905. go through.

  906. And all

  907. of us

  908. have a

  909. cup to

  910. bear.

  911. All of

  912. us have

  913. a set

  914. of

  915. circumstances

  916. to come

  917. through.

  918. And what

  919. we see

  920. here in

  921. verse

  922. 19 to

  923. 21 is

  924. his sense

  925. of being

  926. engulfed

  927. by shame

  928. and being

  929. abandoned

  930. of all

  931. comfort.

  932. There is

  933. nowhere to

  934. turn.

  935. Reproaches,

  936. this unjust

  937. suffering,

  938. it is

  939. breaking his

  940. heart.

  941. He is

  942. in despair.

  943. I looked

  944. and there

  945. was no

  946. comforter

  947. to be

  948. found.

  949. But what

  950. do you

  951. see here?

  952. Just like

  953. back in

  954. verse 5,

  955. he says

  956. there that

  957. God knows.

  958. In verse

  959. 5,

  960. O God,

  961. you know

  962. my

  963. folly.

  964. Well,

  965. here he

  966. is saying

  967. in verse

  968. 19,

  969. you know

  970. my

  971. reproach.

  972. So we

  973. ask ourselves,

  974. is there

  975. any comfort

  976. in these

  977. words?

  978. We see

  979. there is

  980. in the

  981. knowledge

  982. that God

  983. knows.

  984. God

  985. knows

  986. his

  987. every

  988. experience.

  989. He knows

  990. the cup

  991. he is

  992. to bear.

  993. He knows

  994. everything

  995. that he

  996. has to

  997. go

  998. through.

  999. And he's

  1000. not blind

  1001. to it.

  1002. And he

  1003. knows

  1004. your cup.

  1005. He knows

  1006. my cup.

  1007. You look

  1008. back to

  1009. the days

  1010. of Exodus.

  1011. In Exodus

    Exodus 2:23

  1012. 2,

  1013. verse 23,

  1014. it says,

  1015. during those

  1016. many days,

  1017. the king

  1018. of Egypt

  1019. died.

  1020. And the

  1021. people of

  1022. Israel groaned

  1023. because of

  1024. their slavery

  1025. and cried

  1026. out for

  1027. help.

  1028. The cry

  1029. for rescue

  1030. from slavery

  1031. came up

  1032. to God.

  1033. And God

  1034. heard their

  1035. groaning.

  1036. And God

  1037. remembered his

  1038. covenant with

  1039. Abraham,

  1040. with Isaac,

  1041. and with

  1042. Jacob.

  1043. God saw

  1044. the people

  1045. of Israel.

  1046. And it just

  1047. goes on to

  1048. say this,

  1049. and God

  1050. knew.

  1051. And it

  1052. seems to

  1053. just end

  1054. there.

  1055. And God

  1056. knew.

  1057. What did

  1058. God know?

  1059. He knew

  1060. their suffering,

  1061. but he knew

  1062. what had

  1063. to be done.

  1064. And he

  1065. took action.

  1066. And here

  1067. as David

  1068. is crying

  1069. out,

  1070. you know

  1071. my reproach,

  1072. or as he

  1073. has in

  1074. verse 5,

  1075. you know

  1076. my folly.

  1077. We could

  1078. say he

  1079. knows our

  1080. sin,

  1081. and he

  1082. knows our

  1083. suffering,

  1084. and he

  1085. knows what

  1086. needs to

  1087. be done

  1088. about it.

  1089. And what

  1090. has been

  1091. done about

  1092. it?

  1093. Well,

  1094. God sent

  1095. his son

  1096. into this

  1097. world.

  1098. Because he

  1099. knew our

  1100. cup, he

  1101. knew our

  1102. portion, he

  1103. knew our

  1104. suffering, and

  1105. he knew we

  1106. could do

  1107. nothing about

  1108. it, but

  1109. he knew.

  1110. And he

  1111. knew what

  1112. to do

  1113. about it.

  1114. And as

  1115. we trust

  1116. God, we

  1117. can be

  1118. assured that

  1119. his desires

  1120. for his

  1121. people is

  1122. for good.

  1123. The New

  1124. Testament reminds

  1125. us that

  1126. Jesus' own

  1127. experience reflects

  1128. David's at so

  1129. many points.

  1130. death.

  1131. It's

  1132. Matthew who

  1133. remembers

  1134. this psalm,

  1135. the account

  1136. of Jesus'

  1137. death.

  1138. Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:34

  1139. verse 34,

  1140. where it

  1141. says, as

  1142. we've read,

  1143. they gave

  1144. him wine to

  1145. drink mixed

  1146. with gall,

  1147. and after

  1148. tasting it,

  1149. he would

  1150. not drink

  1151. it.

  1152. Really

  1153. following on

  1154. from these

  1155. words of

  1156. Psalm 21.

  1157. They gave

  1158. me sour

  1159. wine to

  1160. drink for

  1161. my thirst.

  1162. Now, why

  1163. wouldn't

  1164. Jesus drink

  1165. this?

  1166. Because the

  1167. wine was

  1168. like a

  1169. medication.

  1170. It would

  1171. have almost

  1172. put him

  1173. out.

  1174. And he

  1175. didn't want

  1176. this.

  1177. He was in

  1178. control at

  1179. every step

  1180. of the way.

  1181. He was our

  1182. redeemer,

  1183. our ransom.

  1184. He paid

  1185. the price

  1186. on the

  1187. cross.

  1188. Not

  1189. dulled to

  1190. any of

  1191. it.

  1192. He bore

  1193. our sin.

  1194. And why

  1195. was that?

  1196. Because when

  1197. you go back

  1198. to Matthew

  1199. 26,

  1200. when Jesus

  1201. is in the

  1202. garden of

  1203. Gethsemane,

  1204. what does

  1205. it say

  1206. about the

  1207. cup there?

  1208. He says

  1209. he's praying

  1210. in the

  1211. garden of

  1212. Gethsemane

  1213. in chapter

  1214. 26,

  1215. verse 39.

  1216. Going a

  1217. little further,

  1218. he fell

  1219. on his

  1220. face and

  1221. prayed,

  1222. saying,

  1223. my father,

  1224. if it be

  1225. possible,

  1226. let this

  1227. cup pass

  1228. from me.

  1229. Nevertheless,

  1230. not as I

  1231. will,

  1232. but as

  1233. you will.

  1234. He took

  1235. the cup.

  1236. He bore

  1237. our sins.

  1238. He died

  1239. on the

  1240. cross.

  1241. John Newton,

  1242. wrote a hymn,

  1243. in evil

  1244. long I

  1245. took delight.

  1246. I want to

  1247. close with

  1248. these words

  1249. as we think

  1250. for ourselves

  1251. and what the

  1252. cross means

  1253. to us.

  1254. In our

  1255. crying to

  1256. God,

  1257. and in the

  1258. cup that we

  1259. have in this

  1260. life,

  1261. should we not

  1262. look to the

  1263. cry of our

  1264. saviour,

  1265. as he

  1266. cried out

  1267. to God,

  1268. my God,

  1269. my God,

  1270. why have

  1271. you forsaken

  1272. me?

  1273. And we

  1274. think of his

  1275. cry there,

  1276. and we

  1277. think of the

  1278. cup that

  1279. he took.

  1280. If it be

  1281. your will,

  1282. may this

  1283. cup pass

  1284. me by,

  1285. but not

  1286. my will,

  1287. but yours

  1288. be done.

  1289. And that

  1290. would help

  1291. us to

  1292. focus

  1293. ourselves

  1294. to the

  1295. cross,

  1296. and to

  1297. see what

  1298. Jesus has

  1299. done for

  1300. us.

  1301. John

  1302. Newton in

  1303. this hymn,

  1304. he speaks

  1305. about his

  1306. own life

  1307. transformed.

  1308. In evil

  1309. long I

  1310. took delight,

  1311. unawed by

  1312. shame or

  1313. fear,

  1314. till a new

  1315. object struck

  1316. my sight and

  1317. stopped my

  1318. wild career.

  1319. I saw one

  1320. hanging on a

  1321. tree, in

  1322. agonies and

  1323. blood, who

  1324. fixed his

  1325. languid eyes

  1326. on me, as

  1327. near his

  1328. cross I

  1329. stood.

  1330. Sure never

  1331. till my

  1332. latest breath

  1333. can I

  1334. forget that

  1335. look.

  1336. It seemed

  1337. to change,

  1338. to charge

  1339. me with

  1340. his death,

  1341. though not

  1342. a word

  1343. he spoke.

  1344. My

  1345. conscience

  1346. felt and

  1347. owned the

  1348. guilt and

  1349. plunged me

  1350. in despair.

  1351. I saw

  1352. my sins

  1353. his blood

  1354. had spilt

  1355. and helped

  1356. to nail

  1357. him there.

  1358. Alas,

  1359. I knew

  1360. not what

  1361. I did,

  1362. but now

  1363. my tears

  1364. are vain.

  1365. where

  1366. shall my

  1367. trembling

  1368. soul be

  1369. hid, for

  1370. I the

  1371. Lord have

  1372. slain.

  1373. A second

  1374. look he

  1375. gave, which

  1376. said, I

  1377. freely all

  1378. forgive.

  1379. This blood

  1380. is for thy

  1381. ransom paid,

  1382. I die

  1383. that thou

  1384. mayst live.

  1385. Thus, while

  1386. his death

  1387. my sin

  1388. displays,

  1389. in all

  1390. its blackest

  1391. hue,

  1392. such is the

  1393. mystery of

  1394. grace, it

  1395. seals my

  1396. pardoned

  1397. too.

  1398. With

  1399. pleasing grief

  1400. and mournful

  1401. joy, my

  1402. spirit now

  1403. is filled,

  1404. that I

  1405. should such

  1406. a life

  1407. destroy, yet

  1408. live by

  1409. him I

  1410. killed.

  1411. His life

  1412. was changed

  1413. by the

  1414. grace of

  1415. God, a

  1416. life lived

  1417. turning away

  1418. from God,

  1419. but looking

  1420. to the

  1421. cross, and

  1422. seeing his

  1423. saviour, who

  1424. shed his

  1425. blood for

  1426. him.

  1427. Draw near

  1428. to my

  1429. soul, he

  1430. cries in

  1431. the psalm,

  1432. redeem me,

  1433. ransom me,

  1434. because of

  1435. my enemies.

  1436. David got

  1437. answer, and

  1438. so did you

  1439. and I, when

  1440. our saviour

  1441. bore our

  1442. sins, and

  1443. so as we

  1444. prepare

  1445. ourselves for

  1446. the Lord's

  1447. supper, we

  1448. look to the

  1449. cross, where

  1450. he gave his

  1451. life, that

  1452. we might

  1453. come and

  1454. do this in

  1455. remembrance of

  1456. him.

  1457. Amen, and

  1458. may God

  1459. bless these

  1460. thoughts to

  1461. us.

  1462. We're going

  1463. to sing to

  1464. God's praise

  1465. and

  1466. conclusion.
