  1. We're going to read together in God's Word. Now we've got two readings this morning. Our first

  2. in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. We're reading in Genesis chapter 11,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  3. and then our second reading is in the book of Acts. So our first reading in Genesis chapter 11.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  4. We're going to read from verse 1 to verse 9, where you see here God sending the people into

  5. confusion with different languages that they couldn't understand each other and then being

  6. sent out to all different parts of the world. So Genesis chapter 11, verse 1. Now the whole earth

    Genesis 11:1

  7. had one language and the same words. And as the people migrated from the east, they found a plain

  8. in the land of Shina and settled there. And they said to one another, come, let us make bricks and

  9. burn them thoroughly. And they had bricks for stone and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, come,

  10. let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens. And let us make a name for

  11. ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the

  12. city and the tower which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, behold, they are one

  13. people and they have all one language. And this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing

  14. that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down. And there confuse their

  15. language so that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord dispersed them from

  16. there over the face of all the earth. And they left off building the city. Therefore, its name was

  17. called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there, the Lord

  18. dispersed them over the face of all the earth. And our second reading is in the book of Acts.

  19. Acts chapter 2. And we're going to read from verse 1 down to verse 13. Acts chapter 2

Acts 2 chapter mention Acts 2:1

  20. verse 1. So we're into the New Testament.

  21. Here we read of this day when the Lord came down by the power of His Spirit into the midst of His people.

  22. And the gathering of His people is what we see here. So Acts chapter 2 at verse 1.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  23. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

  24. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind. And it filled the entire house

  25. where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

  26. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave

  27. them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.

  28. And at this sound the multitude came together. And they were bewildered because each one was hearing

  29. them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying,

  30. Are not all these who are speaking? Galileans. And how is it that we hear each of us in his own

  31. native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites. And residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,

  32. Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene.

  33. And visitors from Rome, both Jews and Proselytes, Cretans and Arabians. We hear them telling in our own

  34. tongue the mighty works of God. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,

  35. What does this mean? But others, mocking, said, They are filled with new wine.

  36. And so on. And may God bless that reading from his word. Let's again come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  37. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for your word and how it reminds us that it is a word that

  38. goes out to all ends of the earth. And we thank you that that is true today in our day and age,

  39. that your word, perhaps like at no other time, is able to find and cross boundaries like never before.

  40. That there is access to so many people and places. That your word is powerful and mighty. And it tells

  41. us of the mighty works of God, of what you have done for your people down through all the generations.

  42. Even as we have read in our two passages together, a time so far apart and yet the same

  43. God. The same God who was able to throw people in all different directions and into the confusion of

  44. different languages. So that instead of bringing glory to themselves, that they would seek you with

  45. all their heart. We thank you that that is what we have read in Genesis and that we are reminded then

  46. as we come into the New Testament that you are a God of mission. A God who is calling a people to

  47. himself from all ends of the earth, that your gospel would be heard and understood and received with

  48. great gladness and wonder. And we know, Lord, too, that there are many challenges to your gospel.

  49. There are many who will dismiss it, that there are many who abandon it. There are many who receive it

  50. with gladness for a time, but are so distracted by the things of this world that it falls away from

  51. them. But we thank you, Lord, that you are the one who is able to prepare the ground, that you are the

  52. one who is able to give the increase and the blessing, that you are the one who has given the power of your

  53. Holy Spirit. As we will read of and see more of this morning, we thank you that we have the Spirit

  54. promised with us. And we thank you that it is not through our power or strength, but through the power of

  55. your Spirit that your Word is blessed. And so we pray that for ourselves here and for all your people who

  56. gather today, and for your Word as it goes out, that it will go out with the power of your Holy Spirit, that it

  57. will accomplish great things, and that we would rejoice and delight in your Word, being received with gladness,

  58. being heard with joy, a Word that brings a sense of joy into the lives of so many broken people.

  59. We thank you that it is a power to heal and to heal to the utmost. So we pray, Lord, that you would

  60. continue to pour out your blessing on us, to be with us as a people, as homes, as families, as a

  61. congregation. We ask, Lord, that you will direct us in all our ways, that you will help us even in this

  62. coming week, that we would go into it with a sense of anticipation, that we would rejoice that you

  63. are the God who hears us, that you are the God who is able to answer prayer. And as we look ahead to a

  64. day of prayer for our denomination, we pray that our times together will not be times that we enter into

  65. without prayer, but that today and in the days leading up to it, we will draw near to you, that we will

  66. commit ourselves and our church and our denomination as a whole, all your people far and wide, Lord,

  67. that we would come praying for one another, praying for your blessing on us, praying humbly as sinners

  68. such as we are, confessing our sins, but thankful for the forgiveness that you have shared upon us

  69. through your Son, Christ Jesus. And so we come, Lord, seeking your face, asking as the psalmist,

  70. Lord, bless and pity us, shine on us with your face, that the earth, thy ways, and nations all

  71. may know your saving grace. We ask these things humbly before you. And we pray too, Lord, for our

  72. communion weekend ahead as well, Lord, that you will prepare our hearts for that, that you will encourage

  73. us, Lord, and strengthen us as a people, that you will increase our faith. Lord, we may become here

  74. today with our faith seeming so small, but we thank you that your word says that even if our faith is

  75. like a grain of mustard seed, so small and insignificant in many ways in our eyes, and yet able to flourish and

  76. blossom into the greatest tree in the garden, we thank you that you are the one who is able to make our

  77. faith flourish, that you are the one who is able to give it the increase and help us, Lord, to lean

  78. upon and look to you in each and every day. So we ask your blessing upon us in all of these things, and we

  79. ask your blessing on our homes and families and our different needs at this time as well. Those who are

  80. mourning and grieving, Lord, we commit to you, asking for your comfort, your grace, and your blessing to

  81. them. Praying for those who are unwell, those who are in hospital and homes, those who have

  82. anticipating hospital visits even in the coming weeks ahead as well. And we do remember in that

  83. mind, Lord, we pray for Donna and James just now. We commit them to you, Lord, asking for your

  84. grace and your peace towards them, that as Donna will await surgery in these coming weeks, Lord, that you

  85. will still our heart and give our calm and help us all to surround them with prayer at all times.

  86. So, Lord, we commit them to you and all others like them, Lord, who have times of anxiety and worries

  87. just now, Lord, that you will shower your blessing upon them, that you will bring comfort and help in all

  88. different times of need. We pray too, Lord, for Reverend Ian Morrison in Oban. We know he's been unwell this

  89. week and is in hospital just now, and we pray for him in his recovery, Lord, that you will strengthen him

  90. and uphold him, Lord, and that you will restore him in health. We pray, Lord, for the wider denomination

  91. too, Lord, that you will guide us and help us as a people, as a denomination that seeks to reach out

  92. with the gospel, that you will direct our steps and our paths and help us to do all for your glory.

  93. So, remember us, we pray, Lord. Remember all your people, all our loved ones, near and far,

  94. those who serve you in the gospel around us here and throughout all ends of the earth, Lord, that we

  95. would see that the harvest is great, but that we are praying to the Lord of the harvest to provide in

  96. every way. So, may you shower us with your blessings and pardon us in all our sin. That's all we ask. We ask in

  97. Jesus' precious name and for his glory. Amen.

  98. Well, again, sing to God's praise. This time we're singing in Psalm 85 in the Scottish Psalter.

  99. Psalm 85 and at verse 6, page 340 of the Psalm books.

  100. We'll sing from verse 6 down to the end of the Psalm.

  101. That in thee may thy people joy, wilt thou not us revive? Show us thy mercy, Lord, to us do thy salvation give.

  102. We'll sing from verse 6 down to verse 13 and the tune is Denfield.

  103. Amen.

  104. Amen.

  105. Amen.

  106. God, in thee may thy people joy, wilt thou not us revive? Show us thy mercy, Lord, to us do thy salvation give.

  107. I'll hear what the Lord will see. To his hope he'll seek peace.

  108. And to his sins, but let them not return to foolishness.

  109. Good, then, not fear him, surely near him, is his salvation.

  110. But glory in her loving heart, her habitation.

  111. のはemployed.

  112. Amen.

  113. Hash Messiah, O valor, to the關 capitalism, Lord, to us dev one of his wounded children.

  114. Amen.

  115. Can glory in his knees be his mercy become the лучше of God.

  116. That in Editionposts, upon his true life of the death, deliver him good to us weel hisinction and being Reynolds.

  117. Amen.

  118. Amen.

  119. Jesus, I, means, our frase豈 ego, to us in sic死, son of Gleich cai.

  120. Amen.

  121. Thank you, O also, to the end of thisakukan block on earth, that is over met colourful BeWorld,

  122. Нам Captain, to us write.

  123. For this good the Lord shall build, our land shall yield in peace.

  124. Justice to set us in his steps shall go before his grace.

  125. We can turn back to our reading in the book of Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  126. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  127. We can just read again at verse 11.

  128. Where we see a reminder of how the people are hearing each other speaking.

  129. Although they would not normally understand, they were understanding one another.

  130. And it says there, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians.

  131. We hear them telling in our own tongue the mighty works of God.

  132. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, what does this mean?

  133. So they were hearing about the mighty works of God.

  134. As we begin this new week, we look ahead in many ways to the week ahead and what lies before us.

  135. And it is a time of national prayer as a denomination.

  136. We have the National Day of Prayer on Wednesday.

  137. It's a time of thanksgiving.

  138. It's a time of year when we look back over the year with much thanksgiving to God.

  139. And then we look ahead to the end of the week.

  140. We would, God willing, come together around the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

  141. When we come to remember the Lord's death and all that he has done for us there.

  142. So how do we go into the week ahead?

  143. Are we going in our own strength?

  144. Are we looking to ourselves?

  145. Or are we looking to God, thankful for the mighty works of God?

  146. And who is with us as we go into the week ahead?

  147. That we do not go alone, but that we have the Lord with us.

  148. And especially as we will see in this passage that we have the promise of the Holy Spirit with us.

  149. And that it is through him and his strength that we seek to do all things to his glory.

  150. Now as you look at the book of Acts in this chapter here, chapter 2 or chapter 1 and 2 really,

  151. you could take together.

  152. You see what the people have witnessed of the power of God.

  153. The mighty works of God that they have already seen.

  154. They have been three years with Jesus and his public ministry, seeing his miracles,

  155. seeing all that he was doing, hearing his teachings and everything that they had

  156. over these last number of years together.

  157. They had enjoyed a real time of blessing.

  158. But then you think of what they'd seen in just the previous few days to this.

  159. How they'd seen the Lord crucified, put to death on the cross.

  160. How they'd heard about the resurrection.

  161. How they'd seen the risen Lord.

  162. And then as chapter 1 shows us how they'd seen his ascension.

  163. How they'd seen him go up to glory to be with the Father.

  164. And you think to yourself the wonder of all that they had seen,

  165. the amazement of all that they had seen,

  166. that this would be enough for anyone's lifetime to see all of this

  167. and to try and understand it.

  168. Where do you begin?

  169. But what we see here in chapter 2 is that God still had a purpose and a plan for his people

  170. and to see and continue to see the mighty works of God

  171. and to show the mighty works of God to others as well.

  172. There's more to come.

  173. This is just the beginning.

  174. In chapter 1 and verse 8,

  175. the people had been reminded as they were gathered together,

  176. just a small number of them.

  177. They were told that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you

  178. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria

  179. and to the end of the earth.

  180. That God was going to continue to send his people out on this journey,

  181. this journey that takes the gospel to all ends of the earth.

  182. So they were waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit

  183. and they didn't have to wait long.

  184. They have been waiting as instructed by Jesus,

  185. waiting with a sense of anticipation as to what was to come.

  186. Not thinking, well, we've got to take things into our own hands,

  187. we've got to do something about this ourselves.

  188. No, they had been given instruction by God

  189. and they were waiting on his coming,

  190. on the Holy Spirit coming and seeing what God would do in their midst.

  191. But they haven't just been waiting without doing anything.

  192. They've been waiting in prayer.

  193. They've been waiting and looking to God's Word.

  194. They've been waiting together as well.

  195. There's this sense of unity and oneness as they are together waiting on the Lord's coming in this way

  196. through the Holy Spirit.

  197. And then the day comes when the power of the Holy Spirit is poured out upon them.

  198. That's what we've read of here in the beginning of chapter 2.

  199. There's this sense of amazement and wonder among all the people there as to what's happening.

  200. And they're left with this question in verse 12,

  201. when they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,

  202. what does this mean?

  203. And that's the question that so often is asked today as well.

  204. What does all this mean?

  205. What does this pouring out of the Spirit mean for us as a people?

  206. What does it mean for the church today?

  207. And so many people look at this seeking the same kind of experience once again,

  208. seeking another day of Pentecost as it is,

  209. a pouring out of the Spirit that we have to wait again for another day

  210. of the Holy Spirit being poured out,

  211. or that we are to come and speak in tongues to one another.

  212. But that's not what this is about.

  213. This is not about waiting for another time,

  214. but looking and seeing that God has given His Spirit,

  215. that He has poured out His Spirit on His people

  216. to be His witnesses to all the ends of the earth.

  217. And so that as we come together in His name here today,

  218. as we go into the week ahead in all that we do,

  219. whether it's in our own homes, in our workplaces,

  220. as we come together for prayer on the National Day of Prayer,

  221. as we look ahead to a communion weekend,

  222. that whatever we are doing,

  223. we are doing it knowing that we have the promise of the Holy Spirit,

  224. that He is with us,

  225. and that He is the one who is able to bless.

  226. You see, Acts chapter 2 must be understood

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  227. in light of what was said in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:4

  228. verse 4 to verse 8.

  229. Well, there it's going through that He has told them

  230. to wait on the promise of the Father which He said,

  231. that the Holy Spirit, not many days from now,

  232. will come upon you.

  233. So they were waiting for it,

  234. and that after that,

  235. that they were to be witnesses to all the ends of the earth.

  236. That is what we see being accomplished and done

  237. in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  238. And if you go on in Acts chapter 3 from verse 14,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  239. you have that great sermon,

  240. at Pentecost of Peter,

  241. which again explains it more clearly for us too.

  242. But what we want to think about just now

  243. is just the sense of wonder of the Holy Spirit,

  244. of the power that we have as a people,

  245. the power that we should depend on

  246. and look to in all that we do.

  247. And so we want to think of three things for ourselves

  248. as we look to all that's ahead of us,

  249. thankful for God's past faithfulness and goodness

  250. and looking ahead in God's sense of anticipation to God.

  251. So three things I want us to take from this passage.

  252. As we think of the day of Pentecost

  253. in the light of their experience then

  254. and ourselves today,

  255. first of all,

  256. that it was something that it was anticipated.

  257. The second thing,

  258. it was something that was amazing.

  259. And the third thing is,

  260. it was something that was awakening.

  261. And as we look to God,

  262. these are three things

  263. that we should have in our own hearts as well.

  264. A sense of anticipation,

  265. what God can do in our midst,

  266. what God can do for us and others.

  267. A sense of amazement

  268. as to who God is,

  269. the wonder of what he has done for us through Christ,

  270. which is what Peter goes on to preach

  271. in that sermon in Acts chapter 2 later on.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  272. How the Lord Jesus died for our sins.

  273. The sense of amazement.

  274. And then thirdly,

  275. the sense of awakening.

  276. That he would stir us up in our hearts.

  277. That in our deadness of our hearts,

  278. that we would see the Holy Spirit

  279. as the one who gives life to us

  280. and to all that we do.

  281. So the first thing we want to see

  282. is the sense of anticipation.

  283. The point of Pentecost here is mission.

  284. Mission.

  285. That the gospel would go out

  286. to all ends of the earth.

  287. Because what is the goal of mission?

  288. Mission.

  289. It is what Habakkuk spoke of

  290. in the Old Testament

  291. in Habakkuk chapter 2 verse 14,

    Habakkuk 2:14

  292. where it says,

  293. That the earth be filled

  294. with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord

  295. as the waters cover the sea.

  296. That is the sense and power of mission.

  297. That the earth be filled

  298. with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.

  299. Just like Psalm 67 says to us,

  300. Lord, bless and pity us.

  301. Shine on us with your face.

  302. That the earth thy ways

  303. and nations all may know your saving grace.

  304. There is a sense of anticipation

  305. that God is blessing his church

  306. to all ends of the earth.

  307. And so to understand what Pentecost means

  308. here in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  309. we have to think of it in light

  310. of what it meant in the Old Testament.

  311. And Pentecost was all to do

  312. with the harvest time.

  313. Pentecost, which means 50th,

  314. refers to 50 days after the Passover festival.

  315. And it's called different things.

  316. In the Old Testament,

  317. it's called the Feast of Wicks

  318. or the Feast of Harvest.

  319. It's known as these things.

  320. But very much it is a harvest theme behind it.

  321. Because at the Feast of Pentecost

  322. would be when the first fruits of the harvest

  323. were brought and offered up to the Lord.

  324. And so there was a sense of thanksgiving

  325. and anticipation.

  326. The people would bring the first part of the harvest,

  327. but it would be an anticipation of more to come.

  328. So there would be a sense of thanksgiving to God,

  329. but also looking to God

  330. and trusting Him that the full harvest would come in

  331. and that it would be successful.

  332. Remember what we were looking at last week

  333. in Matthew chapter 9,

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  334. where Jesus was looking on the people with compassion

  335. and He saw the fields white to harvest.

  336. And He says,

  337. The harvest is plentiful,

  338. and the laborers are few.

  339. Pray to the Lord of the harvest.

  340. So the harvest anticipated in the Old Testament

  341. is now being signified here on this Pentecost

  342. as the harvest of God's people

  343. that is to come in.

  344. And so behind that is a sense of anticipation

  345. that God is able to save

  346. and save to all ends of the earth.

  347. That He is sending out His gospel

  348. to all people everywhere

  349. that they may be gathered in

  350. as part of the harvest.

  351. that they might hear and understand the gospel

  352. and receive it with gladness

  353. and rejoice in the Lord.

  354. And we ask ourselves,

  355. is that how we come to worship God today?

  356. Is that the sense in which we go into the week ahead

  357. as we anticipate a day of special focus on prayer

  358. in our national day of prayer?

  359. As we have a day of thanksgiving?

  360. As we have a weekend of communion?

  361. In all of these things,

  362. are we going into it with a sense of anticipation?

  363. That God has been good to us.

  364. That God has been rich to us through Christ.

  365. That God can bless us as we go forward as a people.

  366. That the harvest is there,

  367. but God is in the business of gathering in His harvest.

  368. That the earth be filled with the knowledge

  369. of the glory of the Lord.

  370. That that is what we would see in our midst.

  371. Anticipate as a people

  372. and seek and long to go out from here with it as well.

  373. So the people here,

  374. they were gathered in one place.

  375. It says that in verse 1 for us.

  376. When the day of Pentecost arrived,

  377. they were all together in one place.

  378. They had that sense of anticipation.

  379. Prayer of expectation, of faith,

  380. and the wonderful things that God can do.

  381. And shouldn't we be like that as well?

  382. Shouldn't we have that sense of anticipation?

  383. What God can do for us.

  384. The second thing we see here,

  385. it was something that was amazing.

  386. You get the sense in which Luke is almost struggling

  387. for words at times to describe

  388. what he is seeing in their midst here.

  389. In verse 2 it says,

  390. Suddenly there came from heaven a sound

  391. like a mighty rushing wind.

  392. And it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

  393. And divided tongues as or like fire

  394. appeared to them and rested in each one of them.

  395. There was this sense of amazement at what was happening.

  396. The sense of, what is this?

  397. This is the mighty works of God.

  398. This is what God has promised for his people.

  399. That he would pour out his spirit upon them.

  400. And God showed himself to them in this way

  401. that just left them with this sense of wonder.

  402. There was this mighty rushing wind

  403. like a spirit had come in.

  404. There was this fire that came down.

  405. And all of these things that are mentioned,

  406. we think of how it relates to the Old Testament.

  407. And how God so often shows his presence in these amazing ways.

  408. When you read through the Old Testament,

  409. you find places where you think,

  410. that's only possible by God.

  411. And that's the whole point of the gospel.

  412. Salvation is only possible through God.

  413. Life eternal is only possible through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  414. You think here how it speaks of this sound,

  415. like a mighty rushing wind.

  416. The sound that came into their midst,

  417. this presence of God.

  418. It's so often how we see the presence of God

  419. in the Old Testament.

  420. In the book of Ezekiel chapter 37,

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  421. where God commanded the prophet to prophesy

  422. in the valley of dry bones.

  423. He said, prophesy.

  424. And it brought life.

  425. The breath of life came upon these dry bones.

  426. And it brought life to them.

  427. And that's exactly what we're seeing here as well.

  428. That the Lord, through his Holy Spirit,

  429. is able to give life to what is dead.

  430. And that's how we are described.

  431. We are dead in our trespasses and sins.

  432. But he is able to give life.

  433. And he's able to give life to his church,

  434. to his people.

  435. And it's amazing how he does it.

  436. How even when we seem so far from God

  437. and so distant from God,

  438. that God in a moment can come and revive

  439. and quicken his people.

  440. And so here they were waiting in a sense of anticipation.

  441. And then they see these amazing things taking place.

  442. The tongues of fire coming down upon them.

  443. And you think of fire in the Old Testament,

  444. how again it symbolized the presence of God.

  445. Moses in the wilderness,

  446. he saw the burning bush.

  447. It wasn't consumed because God was in the midst of it.

  448. And God spoke to him there.

  449. And you think how God led his people

  450. through the wilderness journey.

  451. How did he do it?

  452. He guided them by a pillar of fire.

  453. He was with them.

  454. He was guiding them at all times.

  455. And so there's this sense of God with us here

  456. through his Holy Spirit.

  457. He will be with us.

  458. And then you think back to a reading

  459. in Genesis chapter 11.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  460. What happened there when there was so much confusion

  461. that people were cast into chaos?

  462. They'd all been speaking one language,

  463. but God confused them

  464. so that there would be a multitude of languages

  465. so they couldn't understand one another.

  466. Well, what we see here is

  467. that there will be a language

  468. that everyone can understand.

  469. That God is bringing his people back together.

  470. You look at the list of all the different people

  471. and places mentioned here.

  472. Between verse 7 down to verse 11 there,

  473. there's a number of different places.

  474. And the question is,

  475. how are all these people understanding?

  476. They have their own language.

  477. Well, because God is restoring

  478. and bringing his people back together.

  479. You see, in Genesis,

  480. they had been building this tower

  481. for their own glory,

  482. their own mighty works.

  483. But now they are talking about

  484. the mighty works of God

  485. in a language they can all understand.

  486. And that is the language of the gospel.

  487. That as the gospel goes out,

  488. it goes out with power.

  489. And it leaves a sense of amazement

  490. at what God is able to do.

  491. That he is able to bring people back together.

  492. That he is able to restore and heal

  493. in a way that we cannot do.

  494. Because it's all about the mighty works of God.

  495. It's all about the power of his Holy Spirit.

  496. We cannot do it ourselves.

  497. We look to him.

  498. And that's the way that they were to go on

  499. from this Pentecost day.

  500. And to go out to all ends of the earth.

  501. That is the way that we are to go on

  502. in the strength and power of the Holy Spirit.

  503. Albert Einstein once said,

  504. He who can no longer pause to wonder

  505. is as good as dead.

  506. And how easy it is for us

  507. to lose our wonder of God.

  508. Our amazement of God

  509. and his mighty works.

  510. Imagine coming to look

  511. to the Lord's death on the cross

  512. and to feel nothing.

  513. We have done it ourselves in the past.

  514. Perhaps we're doing it even now.

  515. We're looking at the cross

  516. and hearing of the cross

  517. where Christ died for sinners

  518. and nothing.

  519. There's no wonder.

  520. There's no awe and amazement

  521. because we're dead.

  522. But

  523. the mighty works of God

  524. are that he brings life

  525. through his Spirit.

  526. That the Holy Spirit

  527. is what revives us in our hearts.

  528. What quickens us to see

  529. the cross of Christ

  530. for what it is.

  531. That Christ

  532. died for my sin.

  533. That he gave his life

  534. as a ransom

  535. for me.

  536. And when the Holy Spirit

  537. awakens us

  538. and breathes life

  539. into our hearts.

  540. No longer

  541. do we dead to that.

  542. But we are made alive

  543. to Christ.

  544. We weep

  545. over our sin.

  546. And we rejoice

  547. that Christ died

  548. for our sins.

  549. And we marvel

  550. at the mighty works

  551. of God.

  552. That is how

  553. we should be.

  554. But are we dead?

  555. Have we lost

  556. that sense

  557. of awe

  558. and amazement?

  559. Well we need

  560. the mighty works

  561. of God

  562. through his Spirit

  563. to revive us

  564. and to bless us.

  565. So the third thing

  566. we see here is

  567. it's awakening.

  568. This is awakening.

  569. And this is

  570. what we want

  571. in our own hearts

  572. as well.

  573. We see here

  574. the church

  575. awakening.

  576. We see here

  577. the people of God

  578. awakening.

  579. When they're asking

  580. these questions

  581. in amazement

  582. and perplexity

  583. in verse 12

  584. saying

  585. what does this mean?

  586. We ask ourselves

  587. that question today.

  588. What does this mean?

  589. When you see

  590. all these places

  591. and people

  592. mentioned

  593. what does this mean?

  594. It means that

  595. there's good news

  596. for all.

  597. For everyone

  598. and for all

  599. the nations.

  600. And this is

  601. what awakens

  602. the church

  603. of Christ.

  604. The Holy Spirit

  605. bringing life

  606. and to see

  607. and know

  608. that Christ

  609. died

  610. for all.

  611. In the book

  612. of Revelation

    Revelation 5:9

  613. chapter 5

  614. verse 9

  615. John is there

  616. proclaiming

  617. to us

  618. what Jesus

  619. has done.

  620. that Jesus

  621. has purchased

  622. it for God

  623. with his blood.

  624. Men from

  625. every tribe

  626. and tongue

  627. and people

  628. and nation.

  629. That there is

  630. a mission

  631. for the church

  632. today as well.

  633. That we are

  634. awakened

  635. to this end

  636. to bring the gospel

  637. to all ends

  638. of the earth.

  639. And the people

  640. in this day

  641. of Pentecost

  642. and Acts

  643. here

  644. have been asking

  645. well how is it

  646. possible?

  647. How can we be

  648. your witnesses

  649. in Jerusalem?

  650. Far less

  651. Judea

  652. and even more

  653. so the ends

  654. of all the earth.

  655. How is it

  656. going to be

  657. possible?

  658. We have the

  659. great commission

  660. of the Lord

  661. Jesus

  662. and he says

  663. go to all

  664. ends of the earth.

  665. He says go

  666. but what else

  667. does he say?

  668. He says

  669. I am with you.

  670. I am with you.

  671. And that's

  672. the great question

  673. that we have

  674. for ourselves

  675. as well.

  676. How can we

  677. so small

  678. and insignificant

  679. a people

  680. here?

  681. How can we

  682. possibly go?

  683. Well it's

  684. to be awakened

  685. and to know

  686. the power

  687. of the Holy

  688. Spirit

  689. with us.

  690. It says

  691. in the Old

  692. Testament

  693. it's not

  694. by might

  695. nor by power

  696. but by my

  697. Spirit

  698. says the

  699. Lord.

  700. That is

  701. how we

  702. are to go.

  703. He has

  704. poured out

  705. his Spirit

  706. upon us.

  707. He has

  708. given the

  709. Spirit

  710. to his

  711. church.

  712. Pentecost

  713. was about

  714. mission

  715. and empowering

  716. because we

  717. are powerless

  718. without the

  719. Holy Spirit

  720. but we have

  721. him promised

  722. with us.

  723. So let us

  724. look to

  725. him.

  726. Let us

  727. pray

  728. to God

  729. our Father.

  730. Pray

  731. through our

  732. Lord Jesus

  733. Christ

  734. and pray

  735. for the

  736. Holy Spirit

  737. with us.

  738. When you

  739. go back

  740. to verse

  741. 1 of

  742. chapter 2

  743. here it

  744. gives us

  745. a reminder

  746. of the

  747. starting point

  748. of this

  749. journey

  750. and the

  751. starting point

  752. for ours

  753. as well.

  754. When the

  755. day of

  756. Pentecost

  757. arrived

  758. they were

  759. all together

  760. in one

  761. place.

  762. They were

  763. all together

  764. in one

  765. place.

  766. They were

  767. all tuned

  768. in to

  769. God.

  770. It was

  771. A.W.

  772. Tozer

  773. who once

  774. said

  775. a hundred

  776. pianos

  777. all tuned

  778. to the

  779. same

  780. fork

  781. are

  782. automatically

  783. tuned

  784. to each

  785. other.

  786. And what

  787. was the

  788. point that

  789. he was

  790. making

  791. there?

  792. Well he

  793. was making

  794. you could

  795. try and

  796. tune

  797. your own

  798. piano

  799. and somebody

  800. else could

  801. tune

  802. their own

  803. and everyone

  804. could just

  805. go ahead

  806. and tune

  807. their own

  808. piano

  809. but they're

  810. not going

  811. to be

  812. in tune

  813. because they're

  814. all individual

  815. but tune

  816. it to one

  817. tuning fork

  818. and they're

  819. automatically

  820. playing the

  821. same tune

  822. the same

  823. note.

  824. The point

  825. he's making

  826. is this

  827. that when

  828. we all

  829. tune in

  830. to God

  831. first and

  832. foremost

  833. then we

  834. are all

  835. in tune

  836. with one

  837. another.

  838. That is

  839. what makes

  840. things possible

  841. to be in

  842. tune

  843. with God

  844. to be

  845. together

  846. in one

  847. place

  848. with God

  849. in our

  850. hearts.

  851. knowing

  852. the blessing

  853. of the

  854. Holy Spirit

  855. with us.

  856. So as we

  857. go into

  858. this week

  859. ahead

  860. may we

  861. go with

  862. a sense

  863. of

  864. anticipation

  865. of what

  866. God can

  867. do for

  868. us.

  869. May we

  870. go with

  871. a sense

  872. of amazement

  873. at what

  874. God has

  875. done for

  876. us.

  877. And may

  878. we go

  879. with a

  880. sense

  881. of awakening

  882. knowing

  883. the life

  884. giving

  885. power

  886. of the

  887. Holy Spirit

  888. of God

  889. that we

  890. would see

  891. his mighty

  892. works

  893. in our

  894. midst.

  895. We will

  896. at the

  897. end of

  898. this week

  899. we will

  900. be focusing

  901. on the

  902. Lord's

  903. death.

  904. And that

  905. is our

  906. focus

  907. in all

  908. that we

  909. do

  910. that Christ

  911. died

  912. for us

  913. that we

  914. might have

  915. life.

  916. And the

  917. more we

  918. look to

  919. that

  920. the more

  921. we are in

  922. tune with

  923. that the

  924. more we

  925. are in

  926. tune with

  927. one another

  928. the more

  929. we are in

  930. tune with

  931. all that

  932. is around

  933. us.

  934. And the

  935. words on

  936. your notice

  937. sheet this

  938. week with

  939. regards to

  940. the communion

  941. the words

  942. that Matthew

  943. Henry had

  944. I want to

  945. leave you

  946. with these

  947. words because

  948. they remind

  949. us of

  950. what it

  951. means to

  952. come.

  953. Come to

  954. the Lord's

  955. Supper.

  956. It says

  957. let us

  958. come to

  959. the Lord's

  960. Supper with

  961. rejoicing and

  962. thanksgiving.

  963. these two

  964. must go

  965. together for

  966. whatever is

  967. the matter

  968. of our

  969. rejoicing

  970. must be

  971. the matter

  972. of our

  973. thanksgiving.

  974. Holy joy

  975. is the

  976. heart of

  977. our

  978. thankful

  979. praise and

  980. thankful

  981. praise is

  982. the language

  983. of holy

  984. joy.

  985. Both

  986. these are

  987. very seasonable

  988. when we

  989. are coming

  990. to this

  991. ordinance

  992. which is

  993. instituted

  994. both for

  995. the honor

  996. of the

  997. Redeemer

  998. and for

  999. the comfort

  1000. of the

  1001. redeemed.

  1002. Isn't it

  1003. a wonderful

  1004. way of

  1005. putting it?

  1006. It is

  1007. both for

  1008. the honor

  1009. of the

  1010. Redeemer

  1011. for the

  1012. honor of

  1013. Christ we

  1014. do it

  1015. but it is

  1016. for the

  1017. comfort

  1018. of the

  1019. redeemed.

  1020. The comfort

  1021. of doing

  1022. it in

  1023. remembrance

  1024. of him.

  1025. May we

  1026. come into

  1027. this week

  1028. with a

  1029. sense of

  1030. knowing the

  1031. Holy Spirit's

  1032. leading and

  1033. guiding and

  1034. blessing in

  1035. all that

  1036. we do

  1037. and knowing

  1038. the mighty

  1039. work of

  1040. God in

  1041. our midst.

  1042. Let us

  1043. pray.

  1044. Our

  1045. Father in

  1046. heaven we

  1047. give you

  1048. thanks for

  1049. your goodness

  1050. to us as a

  1051. people and

  1052. deserving as

  1053. we are

  1054. Lord we

  1055. thank you

  1056. for the

  1057. blessings that

  1058. are ours in

  1059. Christ and

  1060. for the

  1061. blessing that

  1062. we have in

  1063. the comfort

  1064. of the

  1065. Holy Spirit

  1066. with us.

  1067. And we

  1068. pray Lord to

  1069. know his

  1070. mighty work

  1071. in our

  1072. midst in

  1073. all that

  1074. we do

  1075. and there

  1076. will be

  1077. for your

  1078. glory and

  1079. yours alone.

  1080. So we

  1081. ask it in

  1082. the name

  1083. of Jesus.

  1084. Amen.

  1085. We're going
