  1. But we begin our worship this evening. We're going to sing to God's praise.

  2. We're singing in Psalm 146 in the Singed Psalms Version, page 191.

  3. Psalm 146 on page 191. We're going to sing from verse 5 down to the end of the psalm.

  4. The tune is Sussex, Psalm 146 at verse 5.

  5. Blessed is the one who truly looks for help to Jacob's God.

  6. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  7. He who made the earth and heaven and the seas with all their store.

  8. He who keeps his every promise, who is faithful evermore.

  9. We'll sing from verse 5 down to the end of the psalm.

  10. To God's praise we stand to sing.

  11. Blessed is the one who truly looks for help to Jacob's God.

  12. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  13. He who made the earth and heaven and the seas with all their store.

  14. He who keeps his every promise, who is faithful evermore.

  15. He delivers from oppression and relieves the hungry flight.

  16. He releases those in prison to the blight the Lord gives sight.

  17. Those who are by town he raises.

  18. God delights in righteousness.

  19. He protects and cares for strangers, widows and the fatherless.

  20. He frustrates the wicked's purpose.

  21. So the Lord through endless days reigns to every generation.

  22. Praise your God, O Zion, praise.

  23. Let's unite our hearts in prayer.

  24. Let us pray.

  25. O Lord, our gracious God, we are blessed to be called the children of God.

  26. We are blessed to be able to call upon you as our Father in heaven.

  27. We are blessed to be able to sing praise to you and to come and offer up our worship to you for all your goodness to us.

  28. For the blessings that are ours through your word, through your spirit, through your son, Christ Jesus.

  29. We thank you for this, your day.

  30. We thank you that is a day for the very purpose in which we have spent it in worshiping you, in coming and hearing your word, fellowshipping with one another, gathering round to lift up our voices to you in praise and prayer.

  31. We thank you for this, Lord, to receive from you, Lord.

  32. We thank you for this, Lord, to your heart, to your heart, for your heart, and to your heart.

  33. We thank you for this, Lord, that as we gather this evening too, that we come with that sense of thankfulness for the great sacrifice that was made for us.

  34. And we thank you that we can sing and echo these words of the psalm.

  35. Blessed is the one who truly looks for help to Jacob's God.

  36. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  37. And may we seek to do that once again this evening, and not just this evening or today, but in all the days ahead, that we would go on in the wake ahead, seeking to do all these things, to place our hope upon the Lord, to continue to look to you as the one who made the earth and the heaven and the seas and all their store.

  38. We thank you for the wonder of the world.

  39. Glorify and praise your name, O Lord, to glorify and praise your name all our days.

  40. But yet, O Lord, as we think of the remembrance that we have had today, we remember that Jesus came to die for us, for we are sinners.

  41. That in our relationship with you there is a breakdown in it because of sin.

  42. There is a great void that came between you and your people.

  43. But yet we thank you, Lord, that even though it was all of us running away from you, turning our back to you and seeking to worship other gods,

  44. that you have remembered us and that you continue to call us to yourself.

  45. That you continue to remind us that all our life is found in you.

  46. That it is only in you that we live, move, and have our being.

  47. And we pray, Lord, that we will evermore depend upon you.

  48. That we will look to you for all the grace that we need for day to day.

  49. That we will look to you for grace to serve you, to love you, to honour you, and to honour your people.

  50. That you will unite us together in our hearts.

  51. That you will bind us together in the cords of your love.

  52. To enable us, Lord, to be your witnesses.

  53. To enable us to be a people who will go out from here and into the week ahead,

  54. rejoicing in the goodness of God and showing forth our praise of you.

  55. Telling others of the wonder of the one who is able to give life and give it abundantly.

  56. We thank you that your gospel is good news.

  57. That is a great news for the world in which we live.

  58. A great news of hope.

  59. A great news that no matter what else comes our way in this world,

  60. that in Christ we have one who will stay close.

  61. Closer than any brother, as the word says.

  62. And so we pray, Lord, that you will help us to go on in the strength of the Lord.

  63. Not seeking any glory for ourselves, but seeking the glory be yours.

  64. For worthy is the Lamb who was slain.

  65. And so, Lord, we thank you for our praying people here.

  66. We thank you for the longing, the desire you put in our hearts to be united together today

  67. and in all the times of worship we have.

  68. And we pray that you will continue to increase that desire.

  69. Not just to be together on the Lord's Day or the midweek, but to fellowship with one another.

  70. To enjoy the company of one another.

  71. Encouraging one another.

  72. Helping one another.

  73. Praying for one another.

  74. May you make us a community of your people for whom it is such a natural thing

  75. to be united together in one spirit, one mind, one heart, under one Christ.

  76. We pray, Lord, that that would be something that would spread throughout our community,

  77. throughout our islands, throughout our land, and throughout the world.

  78. That your people will be built up and strengthened to all ends of the earth.

  79. And we thank you, Lord, that you are indeed a God who is building his church.

  80. That you are the one who is at work near and far.

  81. That you are the one who is calling a people to himself.

  82. That you are the one who will frustrate the wicked's purpose in this world.

  83. When we see so much wickedness around us, Lord, we thank you that you are the one who is able

  84. to frustrate these purposes for which wicked men turn their hands to.

  85. We think of all that is wrong in our world.

  86. And we think of the wickedness that we see near and far.

  87. We pray, Lord, that you will have mercy.

  88. That you will come in your power.

  89. That you will direct men and women, boys and girls, to turn from their evil ways.

  90. And to turn to you.

  91. We thank you that your reign is to every generation.

  92. And that for that we are able to praise your name.

  93. And to lift up our prayers in a sense of hope.

  94. We come in faith, O Lord, and help us that our faith will increase.

  95. That when we feel weak, Lord, you will give us strength.

  96. That when we feel that sense of unable to go on, Lord, that you will uphold us and strengthen us.

  97. That you will guide our every step.

  98. That you will sustain us on this journey.

  99. And we thank you, Lord, that we come with that sense of prayer for one another.

  100. And we think of all that's going on in our communities, in our homes, in our families just now, Lord.

  101. We continue to remember those with particular needs.

  102. Those who are unwell.

  103. Those who are grieving.

  104. Those who are going through various times of distress and trials in their lives.

  105. Lord, we thank you that you know each and every one.

  106. That you are able to bind up the brokenhearted.

  107. That you are able to lift up those who are bowed down.

  108. That you are the one who protects and cares for the strangers, the widows, the fatherless.

  109. That you are the one who releases those in prison.

  110. That you are the one who gives the blind their sight.

  111. That you are the one who has all power and authority over all things.

  112. That you will draw near to all your people.

  113. To all who call upon you.

  114. To all who call upon you in truth.

  115. And Lord, we ask that you will continue with us this evening as we worship your name.

  116. As we open your word together.

  117. A word again that reminds us of why you came.

  118. That we might have life and have a life abundantly.

  119. and we pray Lord that you will continue to teach us through your word to guide her every step by it

  120. and to live according to your truth so bless us in all that we do Lord the reading of your word

  121. the singing of your praise help us to lift our voices up to you with joy with delight as offering

  122. up our praise to the only one who is worthy bless our fellowship this evening too as we thank you

  123. to be able to share in these times together we pray that you will encourage us through it that

  124. you will bless Martin as he comes to speak to us at it Lord help us to pray for him and be encouraged

  125. by him and that he would be encouraged through coming to speak to us and Lord go before us in

  126. the week ahead be with us in all we seek to do in the meetings of our church as a congregation in so

  127. many different ways whether it's in person in prayer meetings and serving you in different ways

  128. whether it's online as a focal gather on Tuesday to have a time of prayer with Muriel Lord we remember

  129. her and pray for her that you will surround her and bless her and keep her make your face to shine

  130. upon her may she be encouraged as she serves you and as she encourages us Lord to look faithfully to

  131. you and to trust in you so Lord hear all our prayers go before us in all our needs and pardon us for all

  132. our sin as we confess them anew this evening hour Lord we fall short of your glory so often but we thank

  133. you for the forgiveness that you give so Lord hear us and go before us now and all we ask we ask in Jesus

  134. precious name and for his sake amen

  135. well again we'll sing to God's praise this time in Psalm 23 and we'll sing Psalms page 28 of the Psalm book

  136. Psalm 23 on page 28 again we'll sing the whole of this Psalm the tune is Tarawathi

  137. the Lord is my shepherd no one shall I know he makes me lie down where the green pastures grow he

  138. leads me to rest where the calm waters flow again this Psalm is our Psalm we sing often maybe not to

  139. sing Psalms version as often but the words constantly remind us that our life our hope is found in the Lord

  140. who is our shepherd so we'll sing the whole of this Psalm to God's praise

  141. the Lord is my shepherd no one shall I know he makes me lie down where the green pastures grow

  142. he leads me to rest where the calm waters flow my wandering steps he brings back to his way in straight paths of righteousness making me stay

  143. and this he has done his great name to display

  144. though I walk in this valley where darkness is near

  145. because you are with me no evil I'll fear your road and your staff bring me comfort and cheer

  146. in the sight of my enemies at able you spread the isle of rejoicing you pour on my head my cup overflows and I'm graciously fed

  147. so surely your covenant mercy and grace will follow me closely in all of my ways

  148. I will dwell in the house of the Lord almighty

  149. we'll turn together to read in the gospel of Mark

  150. we're reading in chapter 10

  151. we take up our reading at verse 32

  152. Mark's gospel chapter 10

  153. I'm taking up our reading at verse 32

  154. and we read down to the end of this chapter

  155. Jesus and the disciples and the crowd are here traveling on their way up to Jerusalem on their way to Jerusalem just before the crucifixion

  156. and as we see they come to the town of Jericho

  157. and as they're leaving Jericho

  158. they come to this encounter with Bartimaeus which is going to be our focus this evening

  159. but we take up our reading at verse 32

  160. and they were on the road going up to Jerusalem and Jesus was walking ahead of them

  161. and they were amazed and those who followed were afraid

  162. taking the twelve again he began to tell them what was to happen to him saying

  163. see we are going up to Jerusalem and the son of man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes

  164. and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles

  165. and they will mock him and spit on him and flog him and kill him

  166. and after three days he will rise

  167. and James and John the sons of Sebedee came up to him and said to him

  168. teacher we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you

  169. and he said to them what do you want me to do for you

  170. and they said to him grant us to sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory

  171. Jesus said to them you do not know what you are asking

  172. are you able to drink the cup that I drink

  173. or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized

  174. and they said to him we are able

  175. and Jesus said to them the cup that I drink you will drink

  176. and with the baptism with which I am baptized you will be baptized

  177. but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant

  178. but is for those for whom it has been prepared

  179. and when the ten heard it they began to be indignant at James and John

  180. and Jesus called them to him and said to them

  181. you know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles

  182. lord it over them

  183. and their great ones exercise authority over them

  184. but it shall not be so among you

  185. but whoever would be great among you must be your servant

  186. and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all

  187. for even the son of man came not to be served

  188. but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many

  189. and they came to Jericho

  190. and as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples

  191. and a great crowd

  192. Bartimaeus a blind beggar

  193. the son of Timaeus was sitting by the roadside

  194. and when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth

  195. he began to cry out and say

  196. Jesus son of David have mercy on me

  197. and many rebuked him telling him to be silent

  198. but he cried out all the more

  199. son of David have mercy on me

  200. and Jesus stopped and said call him

  201. and they called the blind man saying to him

  202. take heart get up

  203. he is calling you

  204. and throwing off his cloak

  205. he sprang up and came to Jesus

  206. and Jesus said to him

  207. what do you want me to do for you

  208. and the blind man said to him

  209. Rabbi let me recover my sight

  210. and Jesus said to him

  211. go your way

  212. your faith has made you well

  213. and immediately he recovered his sight

  214. and followed him on the way

  215. Amen

  216. and may God bless that reading from his word

  217. so before we come to look at this passage

  218. we'll sing together again in Psalm 34

  219. in the Sing Psalms version

  220. page 40 of the psalm book

  221. Psalm 34

  222. and we'll sing from verse 8 down to verse 14

  223. Psalm 34 at verse 8

  224. come taste and see the Lord is good

  225. who trusts in him is blessed

  226. oh fear the Lord you saints with need

  227. you will not be oppressed

  228. and then down at verse 12

  229. we have these words

  230. does anyone delight in life

  231. and long to see good days

  232. then keep your tongue from evil speech

  233. your lips from lying ways

  234. depart and turn from evil paths

  235. and practice what is right

  236. desire to know the way of peace

  237. pursue it with your might

  238. we'll sing from verse 8 down to verse 14

  239. the tune is Kilmarnock

  240. come taste and see the Lord is good

  241. who trust in him is blessed

  242. oh fear the Lord you saints with need

  243. you will not be oppressed

  244. young lions may grow weak and faint

  245. and hunger for their food

  246. but those who wait upon the Lord

  247. will not lack any good

  248. come here my children gather round

  249. and listen to my word

  250. and I will help you understand

  251. how you may fear the Lord

  252. does anyone delight in life

  253. and long to see good days

  254. then keep your tongue from evil speech

  255. your lips from lying ways

  256. depart and turn from evil paths

  257. and practice what is right

  258. desire to know the way of peace

  259. pursue it with your might

  260. well we can turn back to our reading in the Gospel of Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  261. our focus this evening in particular is on

  262. verse 46 down to the end of the chapter

  263. where Jesus meets with this man Bartimaeus

  264. and in verse 51 we read these words

  265. after blind Bartimaeus had got up on his feet

  266. and came running to Jesus

  267. Jesus said to him

  268. what do you want me to do for you

  269. and the blind man said to him

  270. Rabbi let me recover my sight

  271. and Jesus said to him

  272. go your way

  273. your faith has made you well

  274. and immediately he recovered his sight

  275. and followed him on the way

  276. as we come to the close of our communion weekend

  277. I want to once more just consider this passage

  278. where we read of Bartimaeus

  279. but consider it in light of the verse that we've been thinking about

  280. in each of the services over the weekend

  281. considering the reason for Jesus coming into the world

  282. and that verse has been John 10 verse 10

    John 10:10

  283. where it says

  284. the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy

  285. I came that they may have life

  286. and have it abundantly

  287. Jesus came that we might have life

  288. and have it abundantly

  289. and we began last evening by looking at Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  290. chapter 30

  291. where we considered the choice that was put before the people

  292. there

  293. there

  294. the choice between life

  295. and death

  296. Jesus came

  297. that we might have life abundantly

  298. but there is another who seeks to

  299. steal and kill

  300. and destroy

  301. and so we often have that choice

  302. before us

  303. who are we listening to

  304. which way are we going

  305. does anyone delight in life

  306. as the psalmist said

  307. and we are to pursue it

  308. with all our might

  309. to pursue the Lord

  310. with all our might

  311. so we had that choice

  312. put before us

  313. then this morning

  314. as we gathered for the Lord's

  315. supper

  316. we were considering the one who is the source of life

  317. Jesus who gave his body

  318. and his blood

  319. that we might have life

  320. through him

  321. and tonight I want us to conclude

  322. this theme of the way of life

  323. looking at the way of life

  324. the life that Jesus is able to give in abundance

  325. and what does abundant life look like

  326. and how do we live it

  327. if you were to meet Bartimaeus

  328. and be part of the crowd that was leaving Jericho

  329. and see Bartimaeus

  330. your first impression wouldn't be

  331. there's one who has an abundant life

  332. there's not someone who has life

  333. and life to the full

  334. he's a beggar

  335. he's blind

  336. and yet as we're going to see

  337. he saw more

  338. than those who were walking with Jesus

  339. even at that time

  340. he cried out in his great need

  341. Jesus son of David

  342. have mercy on me

  343. his plea was for life

  344. and as we look at the life of Bartimaeus

  345. we see the compassion of Jesus

  346. we thought about it recently in the Gospel of Mark

  347. how Jesus saw the crowd and had compassion on them

  348. well here is another instance of Jesus showing that compassion

  349. compassion towards this blind beggar

  350. and we see how he gives life

  351. and life abundant to Bartimaeus

  352. and what Bartimaeus does is follow him on the way

  353. and that way wouldn't be easy

  354. that way wouldn't be all perfect in every way

  355. it would have its ups and its down

  356. like everyone who comes to follow Jesus

  357. and find the life that Jesus offers abundantly

  358. is not a life separate to challenges and trials

  359. but it's a life with that great hope

  360. and assurance

  361. of not just life for now

  362. but life abundant

  363. and life eternal

  364. through him

  365. a missionary society once wrote to David Livingston

  366. after he was out in Africa for some time

  367. and they asked him

  368. have you found a good road to where you are

  369. if so we want to know how to send other men to join you

  370. well David Livingston's reply was to write back and say

  371. if you have men who will come only if they know there is a good road

  372. I don't want them

  373. I want men who will come if there is no road at all

  374. and that is the call that Jesus puts on our lives

  375. not that the way will be easy and perfect and straightforward

  376. he says whoever will come after me will take up his cross and follow me

  377. there will be burdens for us in this life

  378. but it is not without hope

  379. it is not without the security that he is with us

  380. that he has come to give us life

  381. and life in abundance

  382. because the thief comes to steal and kill and destroy

  383. but he has come that we might have life

  384. and so as we look at this passage in Mark

  385. up to this point

  386. Mark is a fast moving gospel

  387. things move from one place to another very quickly

  388. and here as we come into chapter 10

  389. we are seeing Jesus, the disciples

  390. and a crowd making their way up to Jerusalem

  391. and they have come to Jericho

  392. a large town about 18 miles from Jerusalem

  393. and they have gone through this town

  394. and as they are leaving this town

  395. we have this wonderful encounter between Jesus and Bartimaeus

  396. in all the accounts of Jesus meeting with people

  397. encountering people

  398. this one often stands out for me

  399. we may all have our different preferences

  400. of Jesus' encounters with different people

  401. you might think of the woman at the well

  402. or other people that Jesus met

  403. so often there is very personal encounters

  404. that Jesus has with people

  405. but this is one of my favourites

  406. and it is my favourite for a number of different reasons

  407. because you see a few things here

  408. as he meets with Bartimaeus

  409. there is the timing of it

  410. and there is the attitudes of those involved in it

  411. when you think of the timing

  412. Jesus has just told them in verse 32 to 34

  413. of what he is going to do

  414. as he comes to Jerusalem

  415. they were on the road going up to Jerusalem

  416. Jesus was walking ahead of them

  417. and he started to explain to them

  418. why they were going to Jerusalem

  419. the son of man must be delivered over

  420. to the chief priests and the scribes

  421. they will condemn him to death

  422. and deliver him over to the Gentiles

  423. he is explaining to them

  424. why they are going

  425. and the timing in this is

  426. he is just before his crucifixion

  427. and yet even in the midst of this timing

  428. there is still this purpose in what he is doing

  429. he is on his way to Jerusalem

  430. to fulfil this

  431. but you might excuse him

  432. to not want any distractions along the way

  433. and especially a blind beggar

  434. who is crying out at the side of the road

  435. but then you see his attitude

  436. it is one way he has time

  437. when he has time for Bartimaeus

  438. because he came

  439. as we read in verse 45

  440. the son of man came not to be served

  441. but to serve and to give his life

  442. as a ransom for many

  443. he came that we might have life

  444. and have it abundantly

  445. and he came that he might meet with

  446. the likes of Bartimaeus

  447. who he still had time for

  448. and his attitude was one of compassion

  449. towards him

  450. and it contrasts the attitude of those who were with him

  451. the disciples

  452. the crowd

  453. and the attitude you see from them

  454. is one of mocking Bartimaeus

  455. shouting at him to be quiet

  456. to get away

  457. don't bother the master

  458. and you see the attitude of James and John

  459. in the previous section

  460. verse 35 to 45

  461. their attitude of wanting glory

  462. glory for themselves

  463. to sit one at the right

  464. and one at the left

  465. in glory

  466. this is the kind of attitudes

  467. that were there

  468. James and John

  469. if you just want to notice

  470. they come to Jesus with demands

  471. in verse 35

  472. teacher we want you to do for us

  473. whatever we ask of you

  474. they are demanding

  475. and look at what Jesus says

  476. he said to them

  477. what do you want me

  478. to do for you

  479. and what do you see

  480. with Bartimaeus

  481. he didn't come

  482. making demands

  483. he came crying out to Jesus

  484. Jesus son of David

  485. have mercy on me

  486. but look at what he says in verse 51

  487. to Bartimaeus

  488. Jesus said to him

  489. what do you want me to do for you

  490. the very same question

  491. that he'd asked of James and John

  492. but that attitude was one of seeking glory

  493. and you see the contrast here in Bartimaeus

  494. when Jesus says

  495. what do you want me to do for you

  496. he says Rabbi

  497. let me recover my sight

  498. so this is a wonderful encounter

  499. it's a reminder to us of the personal nature

  500. of Jesus's ministry

  501. how he came

  502. how he had time

  503. how he had compassion

  504. how he came to give life

  505. and I want us to think for ourselves this evening

  506. of three things from Bartimaeus' experience

  507. three things that we can so easily apply to ourselves

  508. as we think of what is it to have abundant life

  509. and how do we live this life of abundance

  510. well the first thing we're going to see is his condition

  511. Bartimaeus' condition

  512. the second thing we'll see is his cry

  513. and then thirdly we'll see his cure

  514. so first of all we see Bartimaeus

  515. and his condition

  516. the diagnosis for Bartimaeus is bleak

  517. in terms of what kind of life he'd had

  518. and what the future held for him

  519. people would have seen him as hopeless

  520. they were leaving Jericho

  521. with his disciples in a great crowd

  522. Bartimaeus a blind beggar

  523. the son of Timaeus was sitting

  524. by the roadside

  525. as I said this isn't someone you would look at

  526. and think here's someone who has great hope

  527. in his life

  528. and the crowd mocked him

  529. and rebuked him

  530. but what of Bartimaeus' condition

  531. how would you think first of all

  532. that this is a hopeless case

  533. well firstly he's blind

  534. and this isn't something that was uncommon

  535. in Jesus' day

  536. many eye conditions

  537. that could easily be treated today

  538. they were incurable in Jesus' day

  539. and people who were blind

  540. were often cast to the side

  541. they were often seen as a burden

  542. to even their own families

  543. so they were put away

  544. and they had nowhere to turn

  545. to be blind was to be struck down in many ways

  546. and your case was hopeless

  547. and the only option was

  548. was what we see secondly about him

  549. his condition was

  550. he was a beggar

  551. he was needy

  552. he was dependent on others

  553. and their generosity

  554. to help him survive

  555. and that is how he would seem

  556. in the eyes of those

  557. or many of the eyes of those

  558. who are passing by

  559. even in our own eyes

  560. today as you read this passage

  561. Bartimaeus initially maybe seems like just a hopeless case

  562. and yet as you read through

  563. you see Bartimaeus

  564. had a greater vision than many who were passing by

  565. he may have been physically blind

  566. but his eyes were seeing something else on Jesus

  567. how so?

  568. well first of all we see that he knew what to do

  569. Jesus and the crowd

  570. they were leaving Jericho

  571. on the way up to Jerusalem

  572. and as we were thinking of this morning

  573. this was the time

  574. when they were going to prepare the Passover

  575. so many people would have been making their way up to Jerusalem

  576. just like Jesus and his disciples

  577. going to observe the Passover

  578. and so Bartimaeus is here

  579. he's in the hot spot if you like

  580. for collecting from people

  581. it's like we would see today

  582. people sitting outside train stations

  583. or busy high streets

  584. there's the prime locations

  585. where people will fight and jostle over

  586. to get the prime spot

  587. where they're likely to get something

  588. well Bartimaeus is here outside Jericho

  589. where many people are passing by

  590. but more importantly

  591. although he was able to provide for his needs

  592. in this way physically

  593. there was something else about Bartimaeus

  594. that would make us see that he was not a hopeless case

  595. he was blind physically

  596. but he was not deaf

  597. and as he'd been hearing people passing by

  598. he'd have been hearing

  599. maybe over a number of weeks or even months

  600. he'd have been hearing people talking about Jesus

  601. he'd have been hearing what was happening

  602. in different places through the miracles of Jesus

  603. through the works of Jesus

  604. he was hearing of one who was able to help

  605. so his condition may seem hopeless initially

  606. but actually behind it all there is hope

  607. he was listening

  608. he was in the right place

  609. we ask ourselves

  610. what is our condition today

  611. what is your condition in this sense tonight

  612. are you here listening to what God is saying

  613. are you here seeing you're in the right place

  614. that you're hearing the word of God

  615. are you deaf

  616. are you shunning it

  617. or are you listening to what is being said

  618. are you realizing the importance of it

  619. that here we have

  620. Jesus as it were passing by

  621. that he is speaking to us

  622. Bartimaeus was blind

  623. and yet he was able to see his greatest need

  624. and for ourselves too

  625. surely we need to see our greatest need is Christ

  626. our greatest need is here before us this evening

  627. our greatest need is perhaps something

  628. we've been hearing about over many many years

  629. but we've been deaf to it

  630. we've not been listening

  631. but we see our condition

  632. we are indeed helpless and hopeless without Christ

  633. but here we are under his word

  634. it is a time of opportunity

  635. it is another time to hear the gospel

  636. of the riches of Christ

  637. who is able to give us life

  638. someone else who

  639. recognized his own condition

  640. was the man John Newton

  641. in many ways he had his life

  642. all planned out

  643. he was in the slave trade

  644. he was making money

  645. living a riotous life

  646. he thought he had his life

  647. all planned out

  648. but then he began to realize

  649. his condition

  650. and that's what brought him to write those words

  651. amazing grace

  652. and how sweet the sound

  653. but look at how he describes himself in that hymn

  654. a wretch

  655. one who was lost

  656. one who was blind

  657. that is how he saw his condition

  658. but what made the difference

  659. in his life

  660. grace

  661. it was grace that taught

  662. my heart to fear

  663. and grace my fears relieved

  664. how precious did that grace appear

  665. the hour I first believed

  666. he recognized his condition

  667. a wretch who was lost

  668. who was lost

  669. and who was blind

  670. but he was able to say

  671. I am found

  672. and now I see

  673. and that is the wonder

  674. of what Jesus has come to do

  675. to open the eyes of the blind

  676. to help us to see him

  677. John Newton recognized his condition

  678. Bartimaeus recognized his condition

  679. and if we recognize our condition today

  680. as lost and helpless sinners

  681. what can we do about it

  682. how then can we find

  683. this abundant life

  684. that Jesus offers

  685. well we learn again our second lesson

  686. from Bartimaeus

  687. what did he do?

  688. as Jesus was passing by

  689. what did he do?

  690. he cried out

  691. out

  692. in verse 47

  693. and when he heard

  694. that it was Jesus of Nazareth

  695. he began to cry out

  696. and say

  697. Jesus son of David

  698. have mercy on me

  699. what a cry

  700. he had

  701. and even though it goes on to say

  702. they began to rebuke him

  703. telling him to be silent

  704. what did he do?

  705. he was stubborn

  706. he cried out all the more

  707. son of David

  708. have mercy on me

  709. he wasn't going to be turned away

  710. he had heard who Jesus was

  711. he was hearing that he was passing by

  712. and he cried out

  713. he knew that Jesus could help

  714. he would have heard of the miracles of Jesus

  715. healing lepers

  716. healing the demon possessed

  717. even bringing the dead

  718. back to life

  719. and here is the one

  720. who is the source

  721. of life

  722. and the choice

  723. is there before Bartimaeus

  724. do I cry out

  725. or not?

  726. life or death

  727. which is it going to be?

  728. well he cries out

  729. and he cries out all the more

  730. Jesus son of David

  731. have mercy on me

  732. and we have to recognise

  733. who Jesus is

  734. for ourselves

  735. look at the way he says it

  736. Jesus son of David

  737. so much understanding

  738. behind his cry

  739. it's not just Jesus

  740. Jesus son of David

  741. the fulfilment of the scriptures

  742. the promise of God

  743. the promise of God

  744. that he would send his son

  745. into this world

  746. the one who was going to come

  747. he is here before Bartimaeus

  748. in the same way

  749. as he appeared to the woman of Samaria at the well

  750. and said we know that Christ is coming

  751. and Jesus says I who you speak of

  752. am he

  753. he was there

  754. he is here with Bartimaeus

  755. and we can cry out

  756. to the same Jesus

  757. ourselves

  758. Jesus son of David

  759. have mercy on me

  760. that is the cry

  761. we need to have

  762. if we want to have

  763. that abandoned life

  764. if we want to know

  765. that assurance of eternal life

  766. we need to cry out

  767. and sometimes it's to cry out

  768. all the more

  769. Jesus son of David

  770. have mercy on me

  771. you see Bartimaeus

  772. he realised

  773. what Jesus could do

  774. and is there anyone here

  775. who doesn't know

  776. what Jesus can do for you

  777. the Bible makes it so clear

  778. what Jesus can do for you

  779. is to give you life

  780. and life abundantly

  781. because the alternative is

  782. the thief who comes

  783. to seek to kill and destroy

  784. but Jesus has come

  785. that we might have life

  786. and Bartimaeus saw

  787. his greatest opportunity

  788. had come

  789. for years he would have been sitting here

  790. a blind beggar

  791. helpless in so many ways

  792. but as Jesus is passing by

  793. he realises the opportunity

  794. and he's not going to let

  795. this opportunity pass him by

  796. he recognises

  797. just like Peter and the disciples

  798. who said

  799. you know to whom else can we go

  800. for you have the words of eternal life

  801. there's nowhere else

  802. that this help is going to come from

  803. and for Bartimaeus

  804. there's no other help for him

  805. apart from in Christ

  806. so he cries out

  807. and he recognises that this opportunity

  808. could easily pass him by

  809. you know if Bartimaeus had sat silently

  810. Jesus wasn't going to pass that way

  811. again

  812. he was on his way to Jerusalem

  813. on his way

  814. to give his life as a ransom for many

  815. and for so many

  816. that opportunity

  817. you let it pass by

  818. the cry doesn't come

  819. and Jesus is here tonight

  820. for Bartimaeus

  821. no cry would have been tomorrow

  822. just another day like the one before

  823. the one before and the one before that

  824. no different

  825. but as we cry out to God for help

  826. he is able to give us

  827. as it were a new tomorrow

  828. a new tomorrow where we go

  829. in the strength of the Lord

  830. we rejoice in the hope that he gives

  831. the life and life abundant that he is able

  832. to give to us

  833. in faith

  834. we are to recognise that this

  835. this opportunity could easily pass

  836. us by

  837. and you don't want to be in that situation

  838. where you say

  839. if only

  840. I had another opportunity

  841. today

  842. if you hear his voice

  843. as the psalmist says

  844. do not harden

  845. your heart

  846. cry out

  847. Jesus

  848. son of David

  849. have mercy

  850. on me

  851. the third and final thing we see here

  852. is his cure

  853. when Jesus heard

  854. his cry

  855. he said

  856. call him

  857. and they called him

  858. and said

  859. take heart

  860. get up

  861. he is calling you

  862. Jesus

  863. stopped

  864. it's an amazing

  865. image this

  866. the crowd rebuking

  867. Bartimaeus

  868. mocking

  869. telling him to be silent

  870. but Jesus stopping and saying

  871. call him

  872. the climb

  873. up to

  874. up to Jerusalem

  875. facing up to the fact

  876. that he was going to his death

  877. Jesus has this

  878. compassion and concern

  879. to look at the beggar

  880. and to have time

  881. for him

  882. you know in many ways

  883. you could have thought

  884. James and John

  885. they would have been so much more important

  886. than this beggar

  887. if they were to ask

  888. you know whatever

  889. what do you want

  890. we want you to do for us

  891. whatever we ask of you

  892. you think Jesus

  893. just tell me

  894. and I'll do it

  895. but he doesn't

  896. because

  897. their motive

  898. was wrong

  899. they wanted glory

  900. and so Jesus rebuked them

  901. but what would they have thought now

  902. as they're seeing Jesus

  903. saying

  904. those very same words

  905. to this blind beggar

  906. what do you want me

  907. to do for you

  908. but look at the simplicity

  909. of Bartimaeus' answer

  910. Rabbi

  911. let me recover

  912. my sight

  913. who is important

  914. to Jesus in this passage

  915. they all are

  916. because Jesus

  917. is showing his compassion

  918. to James and John

  919. even in rebuking them

  920. he's teaching them

  921. what it means to be a disciple

  922. to follow him

  923. to follow him

  924. you need to let go

  925. the hope of glory

  926. you need to let go

  927. the sense of status

  928. and power

  929. whoever would be first among you

  930. must be slave of all

  931. he said

  932. for even the son of man

  933. came not to serve

  934. to be served

  935. but to serve

  936. and to give his life

  937. as a ransom for many

  938. there was teaching in that

  939. but he had a concern

  940. concern

  941. for Bartimaeus too

  942. he was important as well

  943. and that's a reminder to us

  944. maybe we don't feel

  945. important to Jesus

  946. he won't trouble himself

  947. with me

  948. he'll see nothing in me

  949. well what he sees is

  950. that you are made in his image

  951. that you have a soul

  952. that is precious to him

  953. and that is why he came

  954. because the thief

  955. wants to steal and kill

  956. and destroy that soul

  957. but Jesus has come

  958. that you might have life

  959. and have it abundantly

  960. so as he says

  961. what do you want me

  962. to do for you

  963. he says Rabbi

  964. let me recover my sight

  965. let me see

  966. isn't that a beautiful response

  967. of all the things

  968. he could have asked for

  969. he just says

  970. Rabbi, teacher

  971. let me see

  972. and isn't that the response

  973. that we should all want

  974. not glory

  975. not status

  976. not power

  977. not any of these things

  978. but just to come

  979. Lord have mercy on me

  980. let me see

  981. see

  982. because this is about

  983. not just seeing

  984. physically

  985. but seeing

  986. spiritually

  987. this is coming

  988. as you see

  989. what Jesus' response

  990. go your way

  991. your faith

  992. has made you well

  993. the faith was there

  994. and Jesus opened his eyes

  995. and I'm sure for many here tonight

  996. the faith is there

  997. faith is there

  998. but your eyes

  999. but your eyes just need

  1000. to be opened

  1001. and that's our prayer

  1002. Rabbi

  1003. teacher

  1004. let me see

  1005. sometimes we just need

  1006. to be disturbed

  1007. in our life

  1008. and there's a prayer

  1009. often attributed to

  1010. Francis Drake

  1011. and it's a prayer

1012. that we could all pray

  1013. where he says this

  1014. disturb us Lord

1015. when we are too well pleased

  1016. with ourselves

1017. when our dreams have come through

1018. because we have dreamed too little

  1019. when we arrive safely

1020. because we have sailed too close to the shore

  1021. the shore

  1022. disturb us Lord

1023. when with the abundance of things we possess

1024. we have lost our thirst

1025. for the waters of life

1026. having fallen in love with life

1027. we have ceased to dream of eternity

1028. and in our efforts to build a new earth

1029. we have allowed our vision of the new heaven to dim

  1030. disturb us

  1031. disturb us

  1032. that's sometimes

  1033. what we need

  1034. disturb us

1035. when we see the abundance of things we possess

1036. and yet we have lost our thirst

1037. for the waters of life

1038. may God give us a thirst for him

1039. a desire to see him

1040. that as we come away

1041. from the Lord's table today

1042. as we come away from the Lord's day

1043. and this season of communion

1044. that we would come away with the response

  1045. of Bartimaeus

  1046. Rabbi let me see

1047. and to know the blessing of the cure that Jesus gives

  1048. go your way

1049. your faith has made you well

  1050. and to respond

  1051. like Bartimaeus

1052. who immediately recovered his sight

  1053. and followed him

  1054. on the way

  1055. let us look

  1056. to Jesus

  1057. and see the one

1058. who is able to give us life

  1059. and life abundant

  1060. and follow him

  1061. on the way

  1062. let us pray

  1063. our Father in heaven

  1064. we give you thanks

  1065. oh Lord
