  1. We'll look at verses 6 to 10. I can read through them first of all.

  2. Psalm 40 and from verse 6.

  3. Words that were quoted in the passage we read in Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  4. Sacrifice and offering you have not desired, but you have given me an open ear.

  5. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.

  6. Then I said, Behold, I have come. In the scroll of the book it is written of me.

  7. I desire to do your will, O my God. Your law is within my heart.

  8. I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation.

  9. Behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.

  10. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart.

  11. I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.

  12. I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

  13. And obviously from the New Testament quotation of these words,

  14. they are applicable to the Lord himself by way of this being a prophecy

  15. of what would later come to be realized and fulfilled

  16. in the arrival of the Son of God incarnate in our world, in our nature, Jesus Christ.

  17. The Psalms have many references, as you know, to the redeeming acts of God.

  18. The Psalms, of course, the book of Psalms is a unique book, unique from one point of view,

  19. that it's set out for a manual of praise and, you know, very well it's been turned,

  20. as we use it, into verse that we can actually use in our singings of praise.

  21. But throughout the book of Psalms, in these references to the redeeming acts of God,

  22. you actually have passages that speak specifically of what the New Testament makes clear,

  23. are references to God the Father, God the Son, Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit,

  24. the Holy Spirit mentioned specifically at times.

  25. And so you would expect that when there are such exact matches from the book of Psalms

  26. to some passages in the New Testament that speak about Jesus,

  27. for example, Psalm 22, the beginning of the first verse there, as you know,

  28. my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  29. Well, these are the words, the very words that Jesus took and used on the cross,

  30. as you know, in the very process of laying down his life.

  31. You would expect, then, references in the Psalms to the likes of things like atonement,

  32. such doctrines as the doctrine of the atonement,

  33. sacrifices that themselves represent the sacrifice of Christ of himself.

  34. You'd expect the sufferings of Jesus to be mentioned, and they are,

  35. not just in Psalm 22, but other Psalms as well.

  36. You would expect also to have such references to the way in which God has fulfilled his promises

  37. through the work of Christ.

  38. And therefore, in the book of Psalms, here in Psalm 40,

  39. is just one passage out of many that refer to God's saving act,

  40. but especially to the Lord Jesus Christ himself,

  41. coming to speak of his obedience,

  42. his obedience as part of his atoning work,

  43. the center of his atoning work,

  44. as that is made clear in the New Testament.

  45. And the high point of these verses is,

  46. in these words,

  47. behold,

  48. I have come.

  49. The rest of the verses round about that really feature

  50. different ways in which this statement is then considered.

  51. Behold,

  52. I have come.

  53. We'll look at the phrase

  54. in more detail in a moment.

  55. But these words,

  56. as they are applied

  57. in the Old Testament

  58. to Jesus prior to his coming into the world,

  59. I mean,

  60. you can really see that

  61. these are words which were in the mind of God,

  62. and in the mind of the Son of God

  63. from all eternity.

  64. That they were words which he had himself in mind

  65. prior to their fulfillment

  66. in his coming,

  67. in his incarnation,

  68. in his being born into the world.

  69. In other words,

  70. they're words from the throne of God

  71. that have really reverberated down through history

  72. until actually they came to be fulfilled

  73. when he actually came physically into the world.

  74. Remarkable thing itself, isn't it?

  75. That he uttered these words from the throne of God

  76. all the way from eternity through history

  77. until the New Testament age

  78. when he came,

  79. having taken our nature.

  80. In other words,

  81. he uttered these from the throne

  82. and then left the throne

  83. in order to become the servant of God

  84. in this world.

  85. And at this time of year,

  86. though it's not by any means

  87. the only time we think of it,

  88. it is desirable

  89. and it's important

  90. that we give emphasis

  91. to certain aspects of the incarnation,

  92. of the coming of Christ,

  93. the coming of the Son of God,

  94. and seek to set that out

  95. before the world in which we live

  96. and move and work and breathe

  97. so that we can hopefully draw people's minds

  98. to the relevance of the whole Bible

  99. in terms of the way it reveals

  100. the importance of the incarnation,

  101. the person of Jesus,

  102. of the work that he came to do.

  103. Now, these words that I've mentioned

  104. in verse 7,

  105. behold, I have come.

  106. Some of the older translations have,

  107. behold, I come, or am coming.

  108. Those who know something about Hebrew grammar

  109. tell us that these words are actually

  110. what Hebrew has as a prophetic perfect.

  111. And we're told that that actually means

  112. they are spoken in such a way

  113. that's so certain

  114. as if it had already happened.

  115. It's not yet happened

  116. in the days of the psalmist

  117. here in the Old Testament,

  118. but they're put in such a form

  119. that's making it so certain

  120. and so sure

  121. that it's just as if

  122. it's already been accomplished

  123. and happened.

  124. Remember something similar,

  125. though it's not in Hebrew,

  126. it's in Greek,

  127. in the Lord's Prayer in John 17,

  128. where he's there,

  129. not yet having died,

  130. not yet having gone out

  131. to his trial

  132. and subsequent crucifixion,

  133. and yet he is there

  134. in prayer to the Father,

  135. saying,

  136. I have finished the work

  137. which you gave me to do.

  138. In other words,

  139. it's a certain

  140. in the mind of Jesus,

  141. it's a certain

  142. in the way in which

  143. he speaks of it

  144. as having been done

  145. as if it had already

  146. been accomplished.

  147. Scripture here is also

  148. giving us something similar to that,

  149. where it says,

  150. Behold,

  151. I have come.

  152. It's from the point of view

  153. of being future,

  154. and yet it's certain

  155. in the mind

  156. and purpose of God.

  157. So let's see

  158. what it says

  159. about his coming.

  160. Why did he come?

  161. What's involved

  162. with his coming?

  163. First of all,

  164. he came to fulfill

  165. the types

  166. and promises

  167. of the Old Testament.

  168. You'll find that here

  169. in verse 6.

  170. Sacrifice and offering

  171. you have not desired,

  172. but you have given me

  173. an open ear,

  174. burnt offering

  175. and sin offering

  176. you have not required.

  177. Then I said,

  178. Behold,

  179. I have come.

  180. In other words,

  181. he's saying,

  182. here are the Old Testament

  183. sacrifices

  184. that always represented

  185. Jesus in his death,

  186. and the psalmist

  187. and the psalmist is saying,

  188. they're no longer desired,

  189. they're no longer relevant,

  190. even though that hasn't yet happened.

  191. It doesn't mean by this

  192. that God has given up

  193. on accepting sacrifices

  194. throughout the Old Testament.

  195. What he means is

  196. these are themselves

  197. going to actually

  198. be done away with,

  199. and they're going to be

  200. done away with

  201. because they're going

  202. to be fulfilled

  203. in the coming,

  204. in the person,

  205. in the work

  206. of the Son of God

  207. in our nature.

  208. Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  209. we read that

  210. a few minutes ago,

  211. and I may remind you

  212. of what it says

  213. from verse 8,

  214. where,

  215. having quoted

  216. from this psalm,

  217. from verse 5,

  218. he then said,

  219. Behold,

  220. I have come

  221. to do your will.

  222. When he said above,

  223. you have neither desired

  224. nor taken pleasure

  225. in sacrifices

  226. and offerings

  227. and burnt offerings

  228. and sin offerings,

  229. these are offered

  230. according to the law.

  231. Then he added,

  232. Behold,

  233. I have come

  234. to do your will.

  235. He abolishes the first

  236. in order to establish

  237. the second.

  238. He abolishes the first,

  239. that is,

  240. that system of sacrifices,

  241. in order that he would

  242. actually establish

  243. the second,

  244. and what is the second?

  245. It's the doing

  246. of the will of God

  247. by Jesus,

  248. his Son.

  249. He abolishes the first,

  250. not just in order

  251. to accomplish the second,

  252. but also he abolishes

  253. the first,

  254. because the second,

  255. the coming of Jesus,

  256. the doing the will

  257. of God,

  258. the Father,

  259. by the Son,

  260. has actually meant

  261. these are no longer required.

  262. They were shadows,

  263. they were preliminaries,

  264. they were representations,

  265. important as they were,

  266. but they are no longer

  267. required.

  268. So that's what the psalmist

  269. is really drawing

  270. our minds to,

  271. in terms of the

  272. Levitical sacrifices,

  273. having been accomplished

  274. as they were in Christ,

  275. and here it's as if

  276. that's really already

  277. happened,

  278. because it's prophetic

  279. of the Lord's coming.

  280. And you see here

  281. in verse 7,

  282. then I said,

  283. behold,

  284. I have come.

  285. And the then is important.

  286. One of these little words

  287. we could easily just

  288. skip over

  289. if we thought

  290. it wasn't just much

  291. than a connecting particle.

  292. And it doesn't just mean

  293. something that happens

  294. in consequence

  295. of something else.

  296. You know,

  297. you use the word then

  298. in that sense

  299. as we use it

  300. commonly in English.

  301. if this is the case,

  302. then this is what follows.

  303. It's a consequential

  304. sort of particle.

  305. But actually here

  306. it's rather to do

  307. with time fulfillment.

  308. In terms of the processing

  309. of God's plan

  310. and in God's time,

  311. when this had come about

  312. that the sacrifices

  313. and offerings

  314. were no longer needed

  315. because Jesus himself

  316. had arrived,

  317. then I said,

  318. in these circumstances,

  319. circumstances,

  320. in that context,

  321. the Lord himself,

  322. Jesus,

  323. is saying,

  324. behold,

  325. I have come.

  326. I am coming to replace

  327. and to fulfill them.

  328. You recall that

  329. Galatians chapter 4

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  330. has something very similar.

  331. In chapter 4

  332. and verse 4

  333. of Galatians,

  334. Paul is saying there,

  335. but when the fullness

  336. of the times

  337. had come,

  338. God sent forth

  339. his son,

  340. born of a woman,

  341. born under the law,

  342. to redeem those

  343. who were under the law

  344. so that we might receive

  345. adoption as sons.

  346. And when the fullness

  347. of the time

  348. was come.

  349. And that's why you find

  350. in Psalm 40 here

  351. that there's a reference

  352. to the book.

  353. Behold,

  354. I have come

  355. in the scroll

  356. of the book

  357. it is written of me.

  358. What was that book?

  359. What is the book here

  360. the psalmist

  361. is prophetically

  362. setting out

  363. and what were

  364. the contents

  365. of that book?

  366. Well,

  367. the book

  368. essentially

  369. is not

  370. a book

  371. literally

  372. as such.

  373. It's actually

  374. a reference

  375. to what we can call

  376. really the divine plan

  377. or the will

  378. of God.

  379. He's going to speak

  380. later about

  381. doing the will

  382. of God.

  383. And that's all

  384. already in the book

  385. in the mind of God,

  386. in the plan

  387. of salvation

  388. that God himself

  389. has devised.

  390. This is written,

  391. he says,

  392. about me

  393. in the scroll

  394. of that book,

  395. in the purpose

  396. of God,

  397. in the mind

  398. of God,

  399. in the plan

  400. of God,

  401. the plan

  402. of redemption.

  403. All this

  404. already

  405. has been

  406. inscribed.

  407. Metaphorically

  408. or spiritually

  409. speaking,

  410. that's already

  411. in the book.

  412. It's been drawn

  413. up by God

  414. and it awaits

  415. in the psalmist's

  416. time

  417. to be

  418. worked through

  419. and fulfilled

  420. by the coming

  421. of Christ

  422. himself.

  423. And

  424. there's also

  425. an importance,

  426. we mention this

  427. word quite a

  428. number of times

  429. in the course

  430. of studying

  431. various parts

  432. of the Bible,

  433. this word

  434. behold

  435. in verse 7.

  436. And we've

  437. referred to it

  438. as it really

  439. is

  440. in a sense

  441. it's a

  442. spotlight,

  443. a spotlight

  444. in a literary

  445. sense

  446. this is

  447. God's

  448. way of

  449. actually

  450. drawing

  451. attention

  452. to things.

  453. Whenever you

  454. find the

  455. word

  456. behold,

  457. whether it's

  458. here or

  459. in the

  460. New Testament

  461. version of

  462. it,

  463. that is

  464. always

  465. drawing our

  466. mind to

  467. something

  468. really

  469. important,

  470. something we

  471. cannot afford

  472. to miss.

  473. And what

  474. he's saying

  475. here is

  476. here's the

  477. spotlight,

  478. the sacrifices,

  479. the offerings,

  480. they're actually

  481. now being

  482. replaced.

  483. Behold,

  484. look at

  485. this,

  486. I have

  487. come.

  488. I have

  489. come as

  490. their

  491. fulfillment.

  492. And the

  493. word

  494. I

  495. is

  496. important

  497. because

  498. who is

  499. speaking?

  500. Well,

  501. of course,

  502. it's

  503. God

  504. himself.

  505. And it's

  506. God

  507. himself,

  508. more

  509. specifically,

  510. as the

  511. New Testament

  512. shows in

  513. the person

  514. of Jesus

  515. the Son.

  516. Behold,

  517. I have

  518. come.

  519. God

  520. and

  521. that takes

  522. us

  523. secondly

  524. to say

  525. that

  526. he came

  527. to fulfill

  528. the types

  529. and promises

  530. but he

  531. came,

  532. in fulfilling

  533. these,

  534. he came

  535. as the

  536. servant

  537. of God.

  538. I have

  539. come.

  540. It is

  541. written in

  542. the scroll

  543. of the book

  544. of me.

  545. I desire

  546. to do

  547. your will,

  548. O my

  549. God.

  550. Your law

  551. is within

  552. my heart.

  553. Now,

  554. one of

  555. the

  556. most

  557. obvious

  558. sets

  559. of

  560. references

  561. to

  562. the

  563. coming

  564. of Jesus,

  565. to the

  566. person

  567. of Jesus

  568. in the

  569. Old Testament

  570. is in

  571. the prophecy

  572. of Isaiah.

  573. Isaiah,

  574. that prophet

  575. that presents

  576. God in

  577. such majestic,

  578. such

  579. momentous

  580. terms,

  581. the God

  582. who is the

  583. creator of

  584. all the

  585. earth,

  586. who holds

  587. everything in

  588. his hand

  589. and yet

  590. the God

  591. who is,

  592. who condescends,

  593. who lowers

  594. himself to

  595. behold the

  596. plight of

  597. his people

  598. and to

  599. come to

  600. make provision

  601. for them.

  602. And it's

  603. in that

  604. great book

  605. of Isaiah,

  606. more than

  607. any other

  608. book of

  609. the Old

  610. Testament,

  611. that you

  612. find more

  613. about the

  614. servant of

  615. the Lord.

  616. He came

  617. to fulfill

  618. the types

  619. and the

  620. promises,

  621. but he

  622. came as

  623. the servant

  624. of the

  625. Lord to

  626. do that.

  627. For

  628. example,

  629. chapter 42

  630. of Isaiah,

  631. if you're

  632. taking notes,

  633. you can

  634. take the

  635. verses down

  636. that I

  637. referred to.

  638. I follow

  639. them through

  640. afterwards.

  641. Chapter 42,

  642. verses 1 to

  643. 4 there,

  644. where you

  645. find

  646. comfort,

  647. sorry,

  648. chapter 42,

  649. where you

  650. find Isaiah

  651. prophetically

  652. saying,

  653. behold my

  654. servant,

  655. whom I

  656. uphold,

  657. my

  658. chosen,

  659. in whom

  660. my soul

  661. delights.

  662. I have

  663. put my

  664. spirit upon

  665. him,

  666. he will

  667. bring forth

  668. justice to

  669. the nations.

  670. Then he

  671. goes on to

  672. say,

  673. he will not

  674. cry aloud,

  675. nor lift up

  676. his voice,

  677. or make it

  678. heard in the

  679. street.

  680. A bruised

  681. reed he

  682. will not

  683. break,

  684. and a

  685. faintly

  686. burning

  687. wick he

  688. will not

  689. quench.

  690. He will

  691. faithfully

  692. bring forth

  693. justice,

  694. he will not

  695. grow faint,

  696. or be

  697. discouraged,

  698. until he

  699. has established

  700. justice in

  701. the earth,

  702. and the

  703. coastlands

  704. wait for

  705. his law.

  706. There's a

  707. marvelous picture

  708. there of

  709. the God

  710. who is so

  711. immense,

  712. but nevertheless

  713. who has this

  714. servant that he

  715. commissions in

  716. order to do

  717. his will,

  718. to carry forth

  719. his will till

  720. it's accomplished

  721. in redemption.

  722. But he does it

  723. by this servant

  724. who is described

  725. as lowly,

  726. and humble,

  727. and gentle.

  728. There's a

  729. reference there

  730. to a bruised

  731. reed he

  732. will not

  733. break.

  734. If you go to

  735. a reed bed

  736. and try and

  737. walk through

  738. it, you'll

  739. find some

  740. reeds there

  741. that are

  742. already broken,

  743. snapped,

  744. almost snapped

  745. off in

  746. half.

  747. It's very

  748. difficult to

  749. then make

  750. your way

  751. through it

  752. without

  753. actually

  754. breaking it

  755. altogether.

  756. Or take

  757. it as the

  758. burning

  759. wick he

  760. will not

  761. quench.

  762. When you

  763. have a

  764. candle with

  765. a wick

  766. burning,

  767. and you

  768. actually put

  769. the light

  770. out, it's

  771. difficult to

  772. do without

  773. crushing the

  774. wick itself.

  775. It's so

  776. delicate at

  777. that stage,

  778. having burnt

  779. for some

  780. time.

  781. And all

  782. of that's a

  783. reference to

  784. such a

  785. precious,

  786. precious thing

  787. pastorally for

  788. us under

  789. the pastoring

  790. of Jesus,

  791. under his

  792. own care as

  793. our shepherd,

  794. as our

  795. shepherd king,

  796. that when he

  797. deals with us

  798. in all our

  799. trials and

  800. our pains and

  801. our woes and

  802. our needs,

  803. and at the

  804. very depth of

  805. our need,

  806. when it

  807. might be

  808. all too

  809. easy just

  810. to present

  811. ourselves to

  812. him as if

  813. we're just a

  814. smoking wick ready

  815. to be snuffed

  816. out.

  817. And maybe

  818. that's how it

  819. feels to us

  820. at times.

  821. But he

  822. will not,

  823. he will not

  824. break it.

  825. When he

  826. handles your

  827. life,

  828. such as his

  829. care and

  830. quality of

  831. care,

  832. such as his

  833. ability,

  834. that he

  835. comes in

  836. order to

  837. heal you

  838. by his

  839. gentleness.

  840. He is the

  841. great creator

  842. whose hands

  843. fashioned the

  844. universe,

  845. and yet he

  846. comes gently

  847. so that,

  848. like the

  849. psalmist

  850. elsewhere says,

  851. your

  852. gentleness

  853. has made

  854. me great.

  855. The

  856. gentleness,

  857. isn't that a

  858. magnificent

  859. thought?

  860. When you

  861. think of the

  862. immensity and

  863. the majesty

  864. and the

  865. greatness,

  866. the eternity

  867. of God,

  868. that we can

  869. say,

  870. your

  871. gentleness

  872. made me

  873. great.

  874. The

  875. gentleness

  876. of God,

  877. how precious

  878. is that to

  879. you and to

  880. me tonight?

  881. The very

  882. gentleness of

  883. God in

  884. Christ that

  885. has come to

  886. deal with

  887. our predicament

  888. and hasn't

  889. crushed us

  890. despite our

  891. sins or

  892. for our

  893. sins.

  894. But has

  895. come to

  896. redeem us

  897. and bring

  898. us back

  899. to himself

  900. and restore

  901. us and

  902. make us into

  903. what we

  904. should be,

  905. what we

  906. were designed

  907. to be from

  908. the beginning.

  909. So here

  910. he's doing

  911. this by

  912. becoming the

  913. servant of

  914. God.

  915. And in

  916. that passage

  917. in Hebrews

  918. that quotes

  919. this,

  920. there's a

  921. slight difference

  922. there,

  923. where the

  924. psalm is

  925. quoted as

  926. in the

  927. Greek

  928. translation

  929. of the

  930. Old

  931. Testament,

  932. in fact,

  933. where it

  934. says there

  935. that,

  936. where it

  937. says,

  938. sacrifice

  939. and offerings

  940. you have

  941. not desired,

  942. but a

  943. body you

  944. have prepared

  945. for me.

  946. Now that's

  947. not in

  948. contradiction

  949. to the

  950. words of

  951. the psalm

  952. itself in

  953. the book

  954. of Psalms,

  955. but it's

  956. an additional

  957. feature that

  958. reminds us

  959. or teaches

  960. us that he

  961. became the

  962. servant by

  963. taking our

  964. nature,

  965. by taking

  966. a body

  967. and soul

  968. to himself

  969. and becoming

  970. a servant

  971. by becoming

  972. human.

  973. And that's

  974. why he says

  975. here in

  976. Psalm 40,

  977. you have

  978. opened my

  979. ear,

  980. you have

  981. given me

  982. an open

  983. ear,

  984. instead of

  985. sacrifices

  986. and offerings,

  987. I have

  988. come and

  989. you have

  990. given me

  991. an open

  992. ear.

  993. What does

  994. that mean?

  995. Well,

  996. an open

  997. ear is

  998. language

  999. that's

  1000. applicable

  1001. to a

  1002. servant

  1003. waiting for

  1004. the master

  1005. to give

  1006. his order.

  1007. And not

  1008. just ready

  1009. to hear

  1010. the master's

  1011. order,

  1012. but instantly

  1013. obedient to

  1014. that instruction.

  1015. It's the

  1016. essence of

  1017. a servant

  1018. that he

  1019. or she

  1020. wishes to

  1021. do what

  1022. the master

  1023. requires

  1024. in order to

  1025. carry out

  1026. the will

  1027. of the

  1028. master,

  1029. assuming,

  1030. of course,

  1031. that that

  1032. isn't cruel,

  1033. that it's

  1034. a good

  1035. thing that

  1036. he's being

  1037. asked to

  1038. do.

  1039. But in

  1040. other words,

  1041. the obedience

  1042. of the

  1043. servant is

  1044. very much

  1045. part of

  1046. the

  1047. servitude,

  1048. the position

  1049. he takes

  1050. or she

  1051. takes.

  1052. And in

  1053. terms of

  1054. the Lord,

  1055. in terms

  1056. of Jesus,

  1057. the Son

  1058. of God,

  1059. he is

  1060. saying,

  1061. you have

  1062. opened,

  1063. you have

  1064. given me

  1065. an open

  1066. ear,

  1067. or you

  1068. have opened

  1069. my ear.

  1070. God

  1071. and how

  1072. often in

  1073. the New

  1074. Testament,

  1075. indeed in

  1076. the statements

  1077. of Jesus

  1078. himself,

  1079. you find

  1080. this very

  1081. thing brought

  1082. out in

  1083. contrast,

  1084. he says,

  1085. to the

  1086. likes of

  1087. the kings

  1088. of the

  1089. Gentiles,

  1090. Luke chapter

    Luke 22:24–27

  1091. 22,

  1092. verses 24

  1093. to 27,

  1094. where he

  1095. speaks of

  1096. himself having

  1097. come to

  1098. serve,

  1099. not to be

  1100. served.

  1101. Mark 10

  1102. has the same

  1103. kind of

  1104. reference,

  1105. but you

  1106. remember the

  1107. context in

  1108. Luke 22,

  1109. here were

  1110. disciples

  1111. squabbling as

  1112. to who was

  1113. going to be

  1114. the greatest,

  1115. just having

  1116. an argument

  1117. among each

  1118. other,

  1119. even though

  1120. they were

  1121. approaching

  1122. the time

  1123. when Jesus

  1124. was going

  1125. to be

  1126. crucified,

  1127. here they

  1128. were,

  1129. and that's

  1130. what they

  1131. were doing,

  1132. walking along

  1133. the road

  1134. with him,

  1135. and just

  1136. in their

  1137. own minds,

  1138. thrusting out

  1139. their chests,

  1140. or making

  1141. themselves kind

  1142. of important,

  1143. and disputing

  1144. as to which

  1145. of them would

  1146. be the

  1147. greatest.

  1148. And Jesus

  1149. saying,

  1150. here,

  1151. I'll tell

  1152. you who

  1153. will be

  1154. the greatest,

  1155. the one

  1156. who is

  1157. the least

  1158. of you

  1159. will be

  1160. the greatest,

  1161. the one

  1162. who is

  1163. the servant

  1164. of all,

  1165. he's the

  1166. greatest,

  1167. for I

  1168. have come

  1169. not to

  1170. be served,

  1171. but to

  1172. serve,

  1173. and to

  1174. give my

  1175. life a

  1176. ransom

  1177. for many.

  1178. That's the

  1179. context.

  1180. And in

  1181. this passage

  1182. in Luke,

  1183. in Psalm

  1184. 40,

  1185. these elements

  1186. from Luke

  1187. and other

  1188. gospels

  1189. are really

  1190. adding some

  1191. light to

  1192. what is here

  1193. already,

  1194. an embryo,

  1195. and you

  1196. can see that

  1197. it's already

  1198. included here

  1199. in principle

  1200. anyway,

  1201. in the

  1202. Psalm.

  1203. So that you

  1204. find here

  1205. in verse

  1206. 8, for

  1207. example,

  1208. following on

  1209. from,

  1210. I have

  1211. come to

  1212. do your

  1213. will,

  1214. I desire

  1215. to do

  1216. your will,

  1217. oh my

  1218. God,

  1219. you see,

  1220. there's the

  1221. obedience

  1222. being followed

  1223. through.

  1224. I have

  1225. come,

  1226. I have

  1227. come to

  1228. do your

  1229. will,

  1230. and I

  1231. desire,

  1232. in other

  1233. words,

  1234. there's an

  1235. element of

  1236. delight in

  1237. that as

  1238. well,

  1239. a delight

  1240. in doing

  1241. the will

  1242. of God,

  1243. and it's

  1244. a remarkable

  1245. thing as

  1246. you look

  1247. at the

  1248. life of

  1249. Jesus,

  1250. how he

  1251. himself was

  1252. not only

  1253. conscious of

  1254. this,

  1255. but constantly

  1256. doing this.

  1257. you think

  1258. of yourself

  1259. and myself,

  1260. think of

  1261. us as

  1262. in terms

  1263. of our

  1264. obedience

  1265. to God,

  1266. is it

  1267. always

  1268. 100%

  1269. active?

  1270. Of course

  1271. it isn't,

  1272. we're

  1273. sinners,

  1274. but you

  1275. look at

  1276. Jesus,

  1277. and every

  1278. single moment

  1279. of his

  1280. life on

  1281. earth as

  1282. the servant

  1283. of God,

  1284. there isn't

  1285. a single

  1286. moment of

  1287. that where

  1288. he is not

  1289. actively

  1290. obedient,

  1291. where he

  1292. is not

  1293. actively

  1294. obedient in

  1295. fulfilling the

  1296. will of

  1297. the Father.

  1298. You will

  1299. never find

  1300. an instance

  1301. where he

  1302. falls short

  1303. of that.

  1304. He doesn't

  1305. wake up

  1306. at some

  1307. times,

  1308. as it

  1309. were,

  1310. in the

  1311. morning and

  1312. say,

  1313. well,

  1314. I need

  1315. to be

  1316. obedient

  1317. today,

  1318. and then

  1319. going through

  1320. the day,

  1321. he sometimes

  1322. forgets,

  1323. and then

  1324. he has to

  1325. say,

  1326. well,

  1327. I'm here

  1328. to be

  1329. obedient

  1330. to the

  1331. Father,

  1332. I'd

  1333. better get

  1334. back on

  1335. track.

  1336. There's

  1337. nothing

  1338. like that,

  1339. because

  1340. he's

  1341. constantly

  1342. perfectly

  1343. obedient,

  1344. as the

  1345. servant

  1346. of the

  1347. Father.

  1348. You remember

  1349. in John's

  1350. Gospel,

  1351. in chapter

  1352. 4,

  1353. when the

  1354. disciples

  1355. came back

  1356. and found

  1357. him talking

  1358. with Oman

  1359. at the

  1360. well,

  1361. they were

  1362. amazed that

  1363. he spoke

  1364. to the

  1365. woman,

  1366. and they

  1367. urged him

  1368. to eat

  1369. something.

  1370. And he

  1371. said to

  1372. them,

  1373. I have

  1374. food to

  1375. eat that

  1376. you know

  1377. not of,

  1378. for my

  1379. food is

  1380. to do

  1381. the will

  1382. of my

  1383. Father,

  1384. and to

  1385. finish

  1386. his

  1387. works.

  1388. That was

  1389. his food.

  1390. Not that

  1391. he didn't

  1392. need physical

  1393. food,

  1394. but that's

  1395. where his

  1396. spiritual

  1397. appetite was

  1398. always

  1399. exercised,

  1400. in being

  1401. the obedient

  1402. servant of

  1403. the Father,

  1404. for our

  1405. sake,

  1406. for our

  1407. benefit.

  1408. That's why

  1409. he says

  1410. here as

  1411. well,

  1412. your law

  1413. is within

  1414. my heart.

  1415. I desire

  1416. to do

  1417. your will,

  1418. O my

  1419. God,

  1420. your law

  1421. is within

  1422. my heart.

  1423. You see,

  1424. there's the

  1425. law of

  1426. God,

  1427. that you

  1428. find summarized,

  1429. for example,

  1430. in the Ten

  1431. Commandments.

  1432. The law

  1433. of God

  1434. is really

  1435. the expression

  1436. of the

  1437. will of

  1438. God,

  1439. his

  1440. demands

  1441. for our

  1442. lives.

  1443. And

  1444. Christ

  1445. came,

  1446. as

  1447. Galatians

  1448. 4 put

  1449. it,

  1450. Christ

  1451. came to

  1452. place

  1453. himself,

  1454. or to

  1455. be

  1456. placed

  1457. under

  1458. the

  1459. law,

  1460. born of

  1461. a

  1462. woman,

  1463. born under

  1464. the law.

  1465. In other

  1466. words,

  1467. born as

  1468. a servant,

  1469. born to

  1470. fulfill what

  1471. the law

  1472. required.

  1473. And he

  1474. says,

  1475. your law

  1476. is within

  1477. my heart.

  1478. There's a

  1479. very interesting

  1480. passage again.

  1481. I'm just

  1482. mentioning these

  1483. passages.

  1484. I don't have

  1485. time just to

  1486. open them all

  1487. up just now,

  1488. but if you

  1489. note them,

  1490. you can

  1491. follow them

  1492. through easily

  1493. enough for

  1494. yourselves.

  1495. When you

  1496. remember the

  1497. way in

  1498. which Jesus

  1499. was tempted

  1500. in the

  1501. wilderness by

  1502. the devil,

  1503. you find it

  1504. in Matthew's

  1505. gospel and

  1506. Luke's

  1507. gospel.

  1508. Matthew's

  1509. gospel,

  1510. you can

  1511. see his

  1512. temptation,

  1513. the three

  1514. main prongs

  1515. of the

  1516. devil's

  1517. attack.

  1518. How did

  1519. Jesus

  1520. respond?

  1521. How did

  1522. he respond

  1523. when the

  1524. devil said,

  1525. why should

  1526. you hunger

  1527. here?

  1528. Command these

  1529. stones to be

  1530. made into

  1531. bread.

  1532. He was

  1533. hungry.

  1534. And the

  1535. devil was

  1536. seeking to

  1537. take advantage

  1538. of that so

  1539. that Jesus

  1540. would, in

  1541. an unauthorized

  1542. way, exercise

  1543. his power to

  1544. relieve himself of

  1545. his sufferings,

  1546. to relieve

  1547. himself of the

  1548. duties that he

  1549. had as the

  1550. incarnate son of

  1551. God, to yield

  1552. obedience to the

  1553. father, to the

  1554. law of God.

  1555. How did Jesus

  1556. respond?

  1557. Well, he responded

  1558. to that and he

  1559. responded to the

  1560. other two temptations

  1561. that followed in

  1562. exactly the same

  1563. way.

  1564. He took the

  1565. devil to the

  1566. book of

  1567. Deuteronomy,

  1568. the book of

  1569. the law.

  1570. And Jesus

  1571. said to him,

  1572. it is written,

  1573. it is written,

  1574. that's where my

  1575. food and drink

  1576. comes from.

  1577. That's what I'm

  1578. here to do.

  1579. I'm here to

  1580. fulfill this

  1581. law for my

  1582. people.

  1583. And I cannot

  1584. step out of

  1585. the way of

  1586. obedience just

  1587. to listen,

  1588. especially to the

  1589. likes of you,

  1590. he says to

  1591. Satan.

  1592. That's

  1593. essentially what

  1594. he's saying in

  1595. the words that

  1596. he used.

  1597. He took him

  1598. back to the

  1599. book of the

  1600. law.

  1601. And that

  1602. too is for

  1603. our motivation,

  1604. isn't it?

  1605. And our

  1606. example and

  1607. our instruction

  1608. and also our

  1609. inspiration.

  1610. Because there's

  1611. one psalm, as

  1612. you know, in

  1613. the book of

  1614. Psalms that

  1615. more than any

  1616. other has to

  1617. do with the

  1618. law of God,

  1619. the word of

  1620. God, the

  1621. precepts of

  1622. God, the

  1623. statutes of

  1624. God, Psalm

  1625. 119.

  1626. And there

  1627. are many, many

  1628. references

  1629. throughout Psalm

  1630. 119 to

  1631. the relish the

  1632. psalmist has

  1633. for the law

  1634. of God.

  1635. And you

  1636. remember, I'll

  1637. just quote two

  1638. verses, verse

  1639. 77.

  1640. Let your

  1641. mercy come to

  1642. me that I

  1643. may live, for

  1644. your law is

  1645. my delight.

  1646. And then

  1647. there's verse

  1648. 97 as well.

  1649. Oh, how I

  1650. love your

  1651. law.

  1652. It is my

  1653. meditation all

  1654. the day.

  1655. And if that

  1656. was true as

  1657. it was for

  1658. the psalmist,

  1659. how much

  1660. more so in a

  1661. perfect fashion

  1662. was it true for

  1663. Jesus?

  1664. He could say

  1665. that at every

  1666. moment of his

  1667. life, oh, how

  1668. I love your

  1669. law.

  1670. It is my

  1671. study all the

  1672. day.

  1673. I'm here to

  1674. do it to

  1675. accomplish its

  1676. requirements.

  1677. He came to

  1678. fulfill the

  1679. times and the

  1680. promises.

  1681. He came to

  1682. do that as

  1683. the servant

  1684. of God.

  1685. But the

  1686. psalm here

  1687. tells us

  1688. thirdly, he

  1689. came to

  1690. announce the

  1691. good news.

  1692. He came to

  1693. announce the

  1694. gospel, in

  1695. other words.

  1696. Because there

  1697. you have it in

  1698. verse 9 and

  1699. 10.

  1700. I have told the

  1701. glad news of

  1702. deliverance in

  1703. the great

  1704. congregation.

  1705. Behold, I have

  1706. not restrained my

  1707. lips as you

  1708. know, O

  1709. God.

  1710. I have not

  1711. hidden your

  1712. deliverance within

  1713. my heart.

  1714. I have spoken of

  1715. your faithfulness

  1716. and your

  1717. salvation.

  1718. I have not

  1719. concealed your

  1720. steadfast love

  1721. and your

  1722. faithfulness from

  1723. the great

  1724. congregation.

  1725. And you could

  1726. really take

  1727. these words,

  1728. the great

  1729. congregation, as

  1730. indicative really

  1731. in a sense of

  1732. all humanity.

  1733. Jesus, through

  1734. the gospel, is

  1735. declaring the

  1736. steadfast love,

  1737. the gospel, the

  1738. good news, the

  1739. salvation of

  1740. God.

  1741. Now, he

  1742. himself, of

  1743. course, is the

  1744. embodiment of

  1745. this.

  1746. Some people will

  1747. say, well, we

  1748. shouldn't really

  1749. focus as much on

  1750. Jesus preaching as

  1751. on Jesus being the

  1752. substance of what we

  1753. preach.

  1754. He himself is the

  1755. good news, the

  1756. gospel.

  1757. And there's a sense

  1758. in which that's

  1759. true.

  1760. But it's also

  1761. true that Jesus

  1762. very deliberately

  1763. preached the

  1764. gospel.

  1765. For example,

  1766. Matthew 4,

    Matthew 4:17

  1767. verse 17,

  1768. interestingly enough,

  1769. after the way in

  1770. which he had

  1771. overcome the

  1772. devil, from

  1773. that time,

  1774. Matthew says,

  1775. Jesus preached.

  1776. Jesus preached

  1777. about the

  1778. kingdom of

  1779. God.

  1780. So Jesus,

  1781. not only did he

  1782. preach, but

  1783. that's what he

  1784. preached.

  1785. He preached

  1786. the kingdom of

  1787. God and

  1788. preached,

  1789. therefore,

  1790. his own

  1791. coming in

  1792. relation to

  1793. that.

  1794. He came to

  1795. announce that

  1796. good news.

  1797. Jesus knew

  1798. where he had

  1799. come from,

  1800. who he was,

  1801. where he was

  1802. going back to,

  1803. back to heaven.

  1804. He knew what he

  1805. had come to do,

  1806. why he had come

  1807. into this world.

  1808. That it was to

  1809. die the death

  1810. of the cross,

  1811. that it was to

  1812. fulfill the

  1813. types, the

  1814. sacrifices,

  1815. of the Old

  1816. Testament time.

  1817. He came as

  1818. the servant of

  1819. God, to

  1820. yield perfect

  1821. obedience to

  1822. the will of

  1823. God.

  1824. He came to

  1825. announce and

  1826. to represent in

  1827. himself the

  1828. kingdom of

  1829. God, claim

  1830. of God over

  1831. human life,

  1832. and the call

  1833. of God through

  1834. the gospel to

  1835. come to be

  1836. citizens,

  1837. subjects of

  1838. that kingdom.

  1839. them.

  1840. Oh, we're

  1841. better some

  1842. than in

  1843. John's gospel

  1844. chapter 10

  1845. and verse 10.

  1846. In contrast

  1847. to the false

  1848. shepherds,

  1849. I have come,

  1850. he said,

  1851. that they

  1852. might have

  1853. life, that

  1854. his sheep

  1855. might have

  1856. life, and

  1857. have it the

  1858. more abundantly.

  1859. May God

  1860. bless these

  1861. thoughts.

  1862. On his

  1863. word, let's

  1864. conclude by

  1865. singing in

  1866. Psalm 40

  1867. from the

  1868. scripture.
