  1. Well, good morning and a very warm welcome to you all to our Christmas Club family service.

  2. It's good to see so many of our young people here together today at the front.

  3. It's great to have you with us and it was a great day yesterday at the holiday club.

  4. I hope you all enjoyed it, those who were there.

  5. And we're going to be following on with a theme from that today as well, thinking about

  6. the time of year it is and the gift.

  7. Gifts that we receive in Christmastime are special, but we're going to think today of

  8. the greatest gift of all.

  9. So we're going to come to that in a moment.

  10. But just for your information, there's a few things on the notice sheet to highlight.

  11. After the service this morning, the children are going to go out to the door to my left

  12. here, going through into the hall.

  13. And the hall is set up there for tea and coffee for everyone.

  14. And the children are then going to lead us in some of the songs that they were learning

  15. yesterday together.

  16. So everyone's very welcome.

  17. Please do stay behind for that.

  18. If you can, there'll also be a slideshow of some of the pictures taken yesterday.

  19. So you'll see pictures of some of the activities that they were involved in throughout the day.

  20. So do stay behind for that if you can.

  21. Just go through to the hall next door.

  22. This evening, the YF meets in the MA Hall.

  23. That's on this evening.

  24. Friday the Free is on this coming Friday.

  25. I'm just highlighting that as well because it's holiday time.

  26. There may be families with children who maybe want to come along to that as well on Friday

  27. between 12 and 3.

  28. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in the Christmas Club.

  29. Not just yesterday, but in the days and months leading up to it, there was a lot of hard work

  30. put into it.

  31. Very practical ways.

  32. People were organizing online sign-up sheets, printing sheets, baking, preparing all the crafts

  33. and different things.

  34. And then yesterday, so many people involved.

  35. Too many people to mention, but just a thank you to everyone who was involved.

  36. And especially we thank God that we're able to pray and that everyone can join in in praying

  37. for it and continue to pray that everything that we do, the Lord would bless.

  38. So thank you to everyone who was involved in that.

  39. And today's service is a slightly different format to the usual.

  40. So all the children, you'll have these question sheets.

  41. There's some questions.

  42. There's some activities.

  43. There's all the singings we have and the readings are all in here as well.

  44. So everything's in this booklet for you just to use going through.

  45. There's some questions.

  46. So when we go through to the hall, I'll maybe ask a few of you to see what answers to the

  47. questions you put.

  48. Because there's some questions.

  49. I'm not sure what the answer is.

  50. So you might have to help me out with that.

  51. So I'll see what you put in the question sheet.

  52. So the format's going to be slightly different.

  53. And we'll be having readings and singings and a message at different points throughout

  54. the day.

  55. But we're going to begin by singing to God's praise.

  56. We're singing in Psalm 100.

  57. It's the Sing Psalms version.

  58. If you have the psalm books, it's page 131.

  59. Psalm 100.

  60. We're going to sing the whole of this psalm.

  61. The tune is Selma.

  62. And it's a psalm that reminds us that together we come to praise the Lord as we come today,

  63. not just here, but people throughout the world.

  64. We lift our voices together to praise God.

  65. So we'll stand to sing the whole of this psalm.

  66. And we'll sing the whole of this psalm.

  67. Amen.

  68. Amen.

  69. Amen.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. Amen.

  73. Amen.

  74. All new to earth belong

  75. Adore the Lord with joyful hearts

  76. And come to Him in song

  77. Of that the Lord is God

  78. He made us lost His own

  79. We are the sheep for whom He cares

  80. His people will follow

  81. And God is mixed with praise

  82. His courts with thankfulness

  83. Your praises gladly sing to Him

  84. His name forever bless

  85. What God the Lord is good

  86. His love is never true

  87. His constant truth and faithfulness

  88. Through every age and youth

  89. Well we bow our heads in a word of prayer

  90. Now let us pray

  91. Our Father in heaven

  92. We thank you for this day

  93. We thank you for Sunday

  94. As the Lord's day

  95. A day when we are able to come

  96. Together in this way of worship

  97. And praise to you

  98. We thank you Lord

  99. That you have given us so many good things

  100. We thank you for all the times of great joy

  101. We enjoy together

  102. As we think back even to yesterday

  103. To our time in the holiday club together

  104. We thank you for your peace and blessing upon us there

  105. And for all who came along

  106. And for all that was done

  107. And for all the enjoyment that we had

  108. And above all Lord

  109. We thank you that as we come together in these ways

  110. We come to hear of a precious Saviour

  111. One who we pray will become more and more precious

  112. To every one of us here

  113. Today and in all the days ahead

  114. That our love for our Lord Jesus

  115. Would grow and blossom in all our lives

  116. From the youngest to the oldest here

  117. For we thank you that as we come

  118. We come not looking to give praise to ourselves

  119. Or to anyone else

  120. But to come giving praise to you

  121. As we have sung

  122. We are to come and enter your presence

  123. With joy and thankfulness

  124. For all of the goodness that you have shown to us

  125. For all the great and wondrous things that you have done

  126. And so we pray today that as we turn to your word

  127. As we thank you for it

  128. As we thank you for the Bible

  129. And for all that it teaches us

  130. About who we are and who you are

  131. It teaches us about the gaps that exist in our lives

  132. And we don't know you

  133. But we thank you that it teaches us too

  134. For the way that that gap is filled

  135. When we come to put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ

  136. We thank you for this time of year

  137. And all the things that we enjoy

  138. When there is so much activity around us

  139. And in our own lives too

  140. As we think of the schools

  141. And all that is happening in them

  142. With concerts and school meals

  143. And pantomimes

  144. And all sorts of things going on just now

  145. We realise that it's a busy time of year

  146. And we just pray your blessing on the schools

  147. Upon the teachers and staff

  148. And all the pupils just now

  149. And as we look forward to the holidays this coming week

  150. We pray that you will bless them

  151. In their time off

  152. And there will be a time to enjoy

  153. Enjoy together with family and friends

  154. But we realise too Lord

  155. That this time of year

  156. Is often a sad time of year for many

  157. Many will feel lonely

  158. Many will feel sad at this time of year

  159. Because of different things going on

  160. Or different things that have happened

  161. In the past year or in the past years

  162. And we do remember Lord

  163. That we are to look out for one another

  164. To encourage one another

  165. To help one another

  166. And we thank you that your word teaches us that too

  167. That we are to pray for and to encourage one another

  168. As often as we can

  169. And so we thank you Lord

  170. For the very fact that you are with us

  171. That that is above all what we remember

  172. At this time of year

  173. That you sent your son into this world

  174. You sent him as the greatest gift of all

  175. And we pray that in everything else

  176. That goes on in our lives just now

  177. That you will help us to remember you

  178. And to remember your great love towards us

  179. To remember your son Christ Jesus

  180. And to come and be able to call him

  181. Our Lord and our God

  182. Help us to trust in him

  183. With all our hearts

  184. So may you bless our time together here

  185. And also as we go through to the hall later

  186. We pray Lord that you will bless us

  187. As we continue to worship you

  188. And to praise you this day

  189. For all your goodness to us

  190. Remember us and all our families

  191. All who we love and care for

  192. And indeed even those we see as strangers around us

  193. Lord we pray for you to bless us

  194. And watch over us

  195. We give thanks to you for all of these things

  196. And ask it all in Jesus name

  197. With the forgiveness of our sins

  198. Amen

  199. Well it's a special time of year just now

  200. When there's so much activity going on around us

  201. And it's a busy time of year

  202. Hands up if you're feeling a little tired today

  203. For a busy day yesterday

  204. Most of the adults are putting up their hands

  205. And some of the children as well

  206. Because it is a busy time of year

  207. There's a lot going on

  208. There's a lot of activities going on

  209. Even around us in school

  210. There'll be busy things going on

  211. When you have your Christmas lunch

  212. You'll have your Christmas parties

  213. Christmas concert

  214. All of these things going on

  215. And then even when you're at home

  216. You're maybe sitting there

  217. Looking out the window

  218. To see if the postie or woodies

  219. Or DRs appearing at the door

  220. Seeing if they're bringing cards

  221. Or presents to you

  222. Because it's this time of year

  223. And we exchange presents

  224. And that's one of the most exciting things

  225. At this time of year

  226. Isn't it?

  227. As we were thinking about yesterday

  228. It's exciting when you see

  229. Maybe under the tree

  230. Lots of Christmas presents

  231. Appearing

  232. And you're beginning to wonder

  233. What's inside them

  234. Maybe you're starting to have a little peek

  235. Just starting to open up the presents

  236. Not just the young people

  237. I know some older people

  238. Who enjoy doing that as well

  239. They start shaking the partials

  240. Wondering what's in it

  241. Or start just ripping a little corner

  242. To see if they can see what's in it

  243. And you'll be looking at things like this

  244. Maybe there's these kinds of boxes

  245. Appearing in your house

  246. And under the tree

  247. And you start wiggling it around

  248. And wonder what's inside this

  249. But is this the greatest gift

  250. At this time of year?

  251. We think of how often

  252. We're asked that question

  253. What do you want for Christmas?

  254. Have you been asked that question?

  255. What do you want for Christmas?

  256. And do you have an answer for that question?

  257. Maybe you've asked mum or dad

  258. Or granny or grandpa

  259. Or one of your friends

  260. This is what I want for Christmas

  261. This is what you could get me for Christmas

  262. But is what do I want

  263. The most important question?

  264. Or is a more important question

  265. What do I need for Christmas?

  266. What do I really need in my life for Christmas?

  267. And maybe it's not the gifts

  268. That appear under the tree

  269. I hope that's not what we think

  270. Is the greatest gift of all

  271. Because today I want us to think

  272. About this special time of year

  273. But to remember

  274. It's not just about gifts

  275. That appear under the tree

  276. Or that come on the post

  277. Or in the partial service

  278. It's to remember

  279. What God has given to us

  280. The greatest gift of all

  281. And what has he given to us?

  282. Who has he given to us?

  283. Do you want to answer that question?

  284. Hands up if you want to answer that question

  285. You can just shout it out

  286. Go on then

  287. Who has he given us?

  288. Jesus

  289. Isn't it?

  290. Yeah?

  291. Jesus

  292. That's what we were looking at

  293. At the holiday club yesterday

  294. The greatest gift of all

  295. Given to us

  296. Is Jesus

  297. Because you see

  298. With all the other gifts

  299. We get at Christmas time

  300. And indeed any other time

  301. Maybe we get birthday gifts as well

  302. You see

  303. Jesus isn't just for Christmas

  304. He's for every day of the year

  305. But when we think of every gift

  306. That we get

  307. So often

  308. What will happen to them

  309. They will break after a time

  310. Or they will grow old

  311. And we lose interest in them

  312. We just put them away in a box

  313. Or very often

  314. They just end up

  315. Going into the scrap

  316. We put them away

  317. We forget all about them

  318. But that's not what we are to remember

  319. Or how we are to remember Jesus

  320. The greatest gift of all

  321. We should never grow tired

  322. Of Jesus

  323. Or think that he's not important now

  324. He's not special now

  325. Because he's always important

  326. And he's always to be special for us

  327. Because he blesses us in so many ways

  328. He looks after us here

  329. And he promises us

  330. And all of us

  331. That if we put our trust in him

  332. It's not just for here and now

  333. But forever

  334. For eternity

  335. As the Bible says

  336. He sent us the greatest gift of all

  337. A saviour

  338. Who is Christ the Lord

  339. That's the verses

  340. That we're going to look at

  341. Together today

  342. Because when we read in the Gospel of Luke

  343. We hear about the angel

  344. And we're going to read this in a wee while

  345. That we hear the angel saying to the shepherds

  346. Fear not

  347. For behold

  348. Born to you unto this day

  349. In the city of David

  350. It's a saviour

  351. Who is Christ

  352. The Lord

  353. And that's what's important

  354. That's our greatest need

  355. Somebody put it like this

  356. If our greatest need

  357. Was information

  358. God would have sent us an educator

  359. If our greatest need

  360. Had been technology

  361. God would have sent us a scientist

  362. If our greatest need

  363. Had been money

  364. God would have sent us a banker

  365. If our greatest need

  366. Had been pleasure

  367. God would have sent us an entertainer

  368. But

  369. Our greatest need

  370. Was forgiveness

  371. Forgiveness from all our sins

  372. And so God sent us

  373. A saviour

  374. That's the greatest gift

  375. That we're going to think about today

  376. So we're going to read

  377. In the Gospel of Luke

  378. But before we do

  379. We're going to say

  380. The Lord's Prayer

  381. Together

  382. Now the Lord's Prayer

  383. You find it on

  384. The Order of Service

  385. We're going to say

  386. The Lord's Prayer

  387. Together

  388. Our Father

  389. Who art in heaven

  390. Hallowed be thy name

  391. Thy kingdom come

  392. Thy will be done on earth

  393. As it is in heaven

  394. Give us this day

  395. Our daily bread

  396. And forgive us our debts

  397. As we forgive our debtors

  398. And lead us not into temptation

  399. But deliver us from evil

  400. For thine is the kingdom

  401. And the power

  402. And the glory

  403. Forever

  404. Amen

  405. Well we're going to turn to read

  406. Our first reading

  407. Well all the readings are going to be

  408. From the Gospel of Luke

  409. But we're going to spread the readings out

  410. Into three parts

  411. So our first reading is in Luke

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  412. Chapter 2

  413. We're going to read from verse 1

  414. Down to verse 12

  415. So you find this on your Order of Service

  416. Or in your Bible

  417. Around page 1032

  418. Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  419. Reading from the beginning

  420. In those days

  421. A decree went out

  422. From Caesar Augustus

  423. That all the world

  424. Should be registered

  425. This was the first registration

  426. When Quirinius

  427. Was governor of Syria

  428. And all went

  429. To be registered

  430. Each to his own town

  431. And Joseph

  432. Also went up

  433. From Galilee

  434. From the town of Nazareth

  435. To Judea

  436. To the city of David

  437. Which is called Bethlehem

  438. Because he was of the house

  439. And lineage of David

  440. To be registered with Mary

  441. His betrothed

  442. Who was with child

  443. And while they were there

  444. The time came for her

  445. To give birth

  446. And she gave birth

  447. To her firstborn son

  448. And wrapped him

  449. In swaddling clothes

  450. And laid him in a manger

  451. Because there was no place

  452. For them in the inn

  453. And in the same region

  454. There were shepherds

  455. Out in the field

  456. Keeping watch

  457. Over their flock

  458. By night

  459. And an angel of the Lord

  460. Appeared to them

  461. And the glory of the Lord

  462. Shone around them

  463. And they were filled

  464. With fear

  465. And the angel said to them

  466. Fear not

  467. For behold

  468. I bring you good news

  469. Of great joy

  470. That will be for all the people

  471. For unto you

  472. Is born this day

  473. In the city of David

  474. A saviour

  475. Who is Christ

  476. The Lord

  477. And this will be

  478. A sign for you

  479. You will find a baby

  480. Wrapped in swaddling clothes

  481. And lying

  482. In a manger

  483. And so on

  484. And may God bless

  485. That reading

  486. From his word

  487. Well the first part

  488. Of our service

  489. Just now

  490. We're going to think

  491. About the gift

  492. That God has given us

  493. The gift

  494. Of a saviour

  495. When we look

  496. At these verses here

  497. Especially verse

  498. Verse 8

  499. Down to verse 12

  500. There we read

  501. We're reading about

  502. The shepherds

  503. Who were out in the field

  504. The night Jesus

  505. Was born

  506. And I'm sure

  507. This is a story

  508. You've all heard before

  509. Or many of you

  510. At least have heard before

  511. And the danger

  512. Of hearing

  513. A story again

  514. And again

  515. Is that

  516. You can think

  517. Oh it's just the same

  518. Old story

  519. I've heard it all before

  520. And you can become

  521. Maybe bored of it

  522. You say

  523. I've heard all this

  524. I don't want to hear it

  525. But listen again

  526. To what

  527. Verse 10 to 12 says

  528. And the angel said to them

  529. Fear not

  530. For behold

  531. I bring you

  532. Good news

  533. Of great joy

  534. That will be

  535. For all the people

  536. For unto you

  537. Is born this day

  538. In the city of David

  539. A saviour

  540. Who is Christ

  541. The Lord

  542. And this will be

  543. A sign to you

  544. You will find

  545. A baby wrapped

  546. In swaddling clothes

  547. And lying

  548. In a manger

  549. These are really

  550. Special words

  551. For us

  552. This is a reminder

  553. To us

  554. Of such

  555. A special day

  556. When God

  557. Sent his son

  558. Into this world

  559. And he was born

  560. Into this world

  561. And he was born

  562. As a saviour

  563. To the world

  564. Somebody put it

  565. Like this

  566. We are to

  567. Hear this

  568. Clearly

  569. So we are to

  570. To listen

  571. To this

  572. Clearly

  573. Even if we have to

  574. Put our hand up

  575. To our ear

  576. And say

  577. What did you say

  578. Can you tell me again

  579. We are to listen

  580. To what he is saying

  581. Here

  582. And then somebody said

  583. We are to feel it

  584. Powerfully

  585. So we are to feel it

  586. In our heart

  587. To feel the power

  588. Of God's word

  589. To us

  590. To see

  591. Here is

  592. The greatest

  593. Thing that we need

  594. And God has

  595. Given us

  596. This gift

  597. The gift

  598. Of our saviour

  599. So we are to feel it

  600. Powerfully

  601. But as we come

  602. To this word

  603. We come prayerfully

  604. Asking God

  605. To speak to us

  606. In a powerful way

  607. And then they said

  608. We are to go away

  609. And ponder it

  610. Deeply

  611. So we are to go away

  612. And we are going to

  613. Think about

  614. What do these words mean

  615. This is a really

  616. Special word

  617. To us

  618. God remembered

  619. The world

  620. God remembered me

  621. And he gave

  622. His son

  623. For me

  624. He sent him

  625. Into this world

  626. And this is

  627. Good news

  628. Of great joy

  629. What's the best news

  630. You've ever heard

  631. I think Duncan Norman's

  632. Best news

  633. Yesterday was

  634. Hearts won

  635. They beat Celtic

  636. That's the best news

  637. That he'd heard

  638. In a long long time

  639. But other people

  640. We hear good news

  641. At different times

  642. During the year

  643. We maybe hear of

  644. Somebody getting engaged

  645. Or getting married

  646. We hear of somebody

  647. Having a baby

  648. We hear of

  649. Lots of different things

  650. That make us happy

  651. But what's the

  652. Greatest news

  653. You could hear

  654. What's the best news

  655. You could ever hear

  656. Well the shepherds

  657. Here

  658. In Luke

  659. They hear the

  660. Greatest news

  661. They could ever hear

  662. Fear not

  663. For behold

  664. I bring you

  665. Good news

  666. Of great joy

  667. A saviour

  668. Is born

  669. To you

  670. Have you ever

  671. Been afraid

  672. Hands up

  673. Have you ever

  674. Been afraid

  675. I'm sure

  676. Lots of people

  677. Have been afraid

  678. I'm afraid

  679. Of heights

  680. Even up here

  681. I'm looking down

  682. I'm thinking

  683. My knees are getting

  684. A little bit wobbly

  685. You're so

  686. So far away from me

  687. I'm so high up here

  688. In so many ways

  689. I'm really scared

  690. Of heights

  691. Some people are

  692. Really scared

  693. Of the dark

  694. And you can imagine

  695. What it was like

  696. For the shepherds

  697. Here when they were

  698. Out in the field

  699. At night

  700. It was dark

  701. And suddenly

  702. There's this host

  703. Of angels

  704. All around them

  705. There's all this singing

  706. And light going on

  707. Around them

  708. And it's

  709. They were afraid

  710. And it was natural

  711. For them to be afraid

  712. We would all be afraid

  713. If something like this

  714. Happened to us

  715. But look at what

  716. They said to them

  717. They said

  718. The angel said

  719. Fear not

  720. Don't be afraid

  721. I have good news

  722. For you

  723. A saviour

  724. Is born

  725. To you

  726. And these words

  727. A saviour

  728. Christ

  729. The Lord

  730. There's three words

  731. There that are

  732. Really special

  733. The first is

  734. A saviour

  735. He had a purpose

  736. In coming

  737. Remember yesterday

  738. At the holiday club

  739. There was a picture

  740. Of a helicopter

  741. Up on the screen

  742. And there was this man

  743. Coming down on the wire

  744. To rescue someone

  745. Because someone

  746. Was in danger

  747. Maybe they were

  748. In trouble at sea

  749. The boat was sinking

  750. And they were

  751. Needing rescuing

  752. So this was like

  753. A saviour

  754. Coming for them

  755. Well this is what

  756. Jesus has done

  757. For us

  758. He's come down

  759. From heaven

  760. Come down

  761. To earth

  762. For us

  763. For his people

  764. To save us

  765. So he's a saviour

  766. He is Christ

  767. It says here

  768. The word Christ

  769. Means he's been anointed

  770. Earlier on this year

  771. In May

  772. We got a new king

  773. King Charles

  774. And there was a special

  775. Ceremony for him

  776. When he was crowned king

  777. He was publicly made king

  778. Over our nation

  779. While Jesus

  780. While Jesus

  781. Was anointed

  782. He was made king

  783. Over all the world

  784. Over all the people

  785. He is the Christ

  786. He is our king

  787. And he is Christ

  788. The Lord

  789. He has authority

  790. Over all things

  791. He has power

  792. Over all things

  793. This is who we are to come

  794. And see as our saviour

  795. Not just anyone

  796. In this world

  797. But Jesus

  798. He is the greatest gift

  799. Of all to us

  800. The gift

  801. Of a saviour

  802. There's another passage

  803. In the Bible

  804. In Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  805. And it speaks about

  806. Our salvation there

  807. It says

  808. For it is by grace

  809. You have been saved

  810. Through faith

  811. And this is not

  812. From yourselves

  813. It says

  814. It is a gift

  815. Of God

  816. It is God's

  817. Greatest gift

  818. To us

  819. A saviour

  820. Who is Christ

  821. The Lord

  822. Well we're going to

  823. To sing together

  824. Now before we come

  825. To our second part

  826. We're singing

  827. In Psalm 89

  828. Psalm 89

  829. We're going to sing

  830. From verse 1 to 5

  831. And the tune is

  832. Done firm line

  833. And again

  834. It's a psalm

  835. That reminds us

  836. That we can ever sing

  837. To God

  838. For all his goodness

  839. To us

  840. God's mercies

  841. I will ever sing

  842. And with my mouth

  843. I shall

  844. Thy faithfulness

  845. Make to be known

  846. To generations

  847. All

  848. We'll sing

  849. From verse 1 to 5

  850. And we stand

  851. To sing

  852. To God's peace

  853. Amen

  854. God's mercies

  855. I will ever sing

  856. And with my mouth

  857. I shall

  858. Thy faithfulness

  859. Make to be known

  860. To generations

  861. To generations

  862. More

  863. For mercy

  864. For mercy

  865. Shall be built

  866. Said I

  867. Forever

  868. To endure

  869. Thy faithfulness

  870. To hear

  871. Me

  872. to David's born of high.

  873. God, I see established shall

  874. forever to remain.

  875. I will to generations all

  876. thy throne built and maintained.

  877. The praises of thy wonders, Lord,

  878. the heavens shall express,

  879. and in the congregation

  880. of saints thy faithfulness.

  881. Amen.

  882. We'll just read on some verses in Luke's Gospel,

  883. chapter 2.

  884. We're reading at verse 13.

  885. Again, you'll find this on the order of service.

  886. Just a few verses from verse 13 to verse 15

  887. as we continue to see what happened with the shepherds.

  888. So at verse 13 it says,

  889. And suddenly there was with the angel

  890. a multitude of the heavenly host

  891. praising God and saying,

  892. Glory to God in the highest,

  893. and on earth peace among those

  894. with whom he is pleased.

  895. When the angels went away from them into heaven,

  896. the shepherds said to one another,

  897. Let us go over to Bethlehem

  898. and see this thing that has happened,

  899. which the Lord has made known to us.

  900. And they went with haste

  901. and found Mary and Joseph

  902. and the baby lying in a manger.

  903. So we're continuing to see

  904. what's happening with the shepherds here.

  905. They'd been afraid.

  906. They'd heard these angels singing,

  907. and now they're singing

  908. a whole host of them together.

  909. Glory to God in the highest,

  910. and on earth peace among those

  911. with whom he is pleased.

  912. And here we see another gift

  913. that God has given to us.

  914. If we see Jesus as the greatest gift of all,

  915. the gift of a Savior,

  916. we see secondly here the gift of peace,

  917. that peace that Jesus is able to give to us.

  918. So I hope you're beginning to realize

  919. that the greatest gift

  920. isn't a gift found in a box like this one.

  921. The greatest gift

  922. is a gift we find spoken of

  923. in the Bible,

  924. the Word of God.

  925. When God is speaking to us here,

  926. he is reminding us

  927. of all that he is able to give to us,

  928. not just to the shepherds back in this day,

  929. but to all God's people

  930. down through all the generations,

  931. he's able to give peace.

  932. God's Word,

  933. someone described it like a treasure chest.

  934. A treasure chest is like a big box,

  935. but it's usually locked, isn't it?

  936. And you need a key

  937. to get into the treasure box.

  938. So how do we get into God's Word

  939. if we think of it as a treasure chest

  940. that is locked?

  941. Well, the key to get into it

  942. is faith,

  943. to believe in what we are reading here

  944. in God's Word.

  945. Because it is through faith

  946. we will begin to realize

  947. that everything that God says to us

  948. in His Word is true.

  949. And that even when we live in a world

  950. that so many sad things happen,

  951. day after day we hear

  952. of sad news

  953. around us here

  954. or in our country

  955. or even in the world,

  956. we are always hearing

  957. of sad news,

  958. sad things that are going on.

  959. But the gift

  960. that God has given to us

  961. through Jesus

  962. is the hope of peace.

  963. Something that can often seem

  964. so far away

  965. for so many people

  966. in this world.

  967. And yet it's something

  968. that God is promising us

  969. through His Son,

  970. Christ Jesus.

  971. For example,

  972. in another part of the Bible,

  973. in a book called Romans,

  974. it says this,

  975. May the God of hope

  976. fill you with all joy

  977. and peace

  978. as you trust in Him.

  979. May He fill you

  980. with all joy

  981. and peace.

  982. And that's what we were seeing

  983. here,

  984. the angels singing

  985. to the shepherds,

  986. Glory to God

  987. in the highest

  988. and on earth,

  989. peace among those

  990. with whom He is pleased.

  991. God gives us

  992. so many wonderful promises

  993. in His Word

  994. that are able

  995. to give us peace

  996. even when

  997. there are sad things

  998. going on.

  999. Do you remember

1000. a song that we were

  1001. learning yesterday?

1002. We're going to sing it

  1003. through in the hall,

  1004. the song,

  1005. The Blessing.

  1006. Well, in that song

  1007. as we sang it,

  1008. it's actually singing

  1009. words from the Bible,

1010. from the book of Numbers,

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  1011. chapter 6.

  1012. The Lord bless you

  1013. and keep you.

1014. The Lord make His face

  1015. to shine upon you

1016. and be gracious to you.

  1017. The Lord lift up

  1018. His countenance upon you

  1019. and give you what?

  1020. What's the missing word

  1021. at the end there?

  1022. Give you,

  1023. anybody want to answer

  1024. that question for me?

1025. The Lord give you peace.

1026. Peace is what is in that song.

  1027. And that's the peace

  1028. that we look for.

1029. Long before Jesus was born,

  1030. hundreds of years

  1031. before Jesus was born,

1032. there was a man called Isaiah

1033. who told us all about

  1034. the coming of Jesus.

  1035. Isaiah said,

  1036. For to you,

  1037. for to us,

  1038. a child is born.

  1039. To us,

  1040. a son is given.

  1041. And the government

1042. will be on his shoulders

1043. and he will be called

  1044. Wonderful Counselor,

  1045. Mighty God,

  1046. Everlasting Father,

  1047. Prince of Peace.

1048. That is what he would give

  1049. to his people,

  1050. the Prince of Peace.

  1051. Jesus is the king

1052. who came into this world

  1053. to give us peace.

  1054. Many years ago,

  1055. there was a king

1056. in a place called Persia.

1057. If you look it up on your maps now,

1058. you won't find the place

  1059. called Persia.

  1060. But where it was,

1061. you would see Iran now.

1062. So it's in the Middle East.

  1063. And this king,

1064. he was a good king.

1065. And he was a wise king.

1066. And he loved his people.

  1067. And very often,

  1068. he wanted to know

  1069. what was happening

1070. in the lives of his people.

1071. So what he would do was,

  1072. he couldn't go out

  1073. dressed as a king.

  1074. If he did,

  1075. everybody would see him

1076. and know exactly who he was.

1077. So what he used to do

1078. was dress up as a beggar.

1079. So he had dirty clothes,

  1080. torn clothes on.

  1081. And he'd go out

  1082. into the streets

1083. and go and visit people

  1084. in their homes.

  1085. And this way,

  1086. he found out

  1087. what was going on

  1088. in their lives.

  1089. And one day,

1090. he visited this poor man.

  1091. This poor man lived

  1092. in a cellar.

1093. And he didn't have much food.

  1094. And all the food

  1095. that he had

  1096. was just little bits

  1097. of scraps

  1098. that he'd managed

  1099. to pick up.

  1100. But the king,

  1101. dressed as a beggar,

  1102. sat with him

  1103. for a time.

1104. He ate a little bit

1105. of his food with him,

1106. the scraps that he had.

  1107. He spoke to him

  1108. in a cheerful way.

1109. He tried to encourage him.

1110. He spoke kind words to him.

  1111. And then,

  1112. after a time,

  1113. he left.

  1114. Well,

  1115. a few weeks later,

  1116. he went to visit

  1117. this man again.

  1118. But this time,

  1119. he decided

1120. he was going to let him know

  1121. who he was.

  1122. So he said

  1123. to this man

  1124. sitting in the cellar,

1125. Do you know who I am?

  1126. And the man said,

  1127. No, I don't.

  1128. He said,

  1129. Well,

  1130. I'm your king.

1131. And the man was astonished

1132. that this was the king

1133. who was sitting with him.

  1134. And the king thought

1135. as he spoke to him,

  1136. Well,

1137. this man's now going to ask me

1138. for some kind of gift.

  1139. Because the king

  1140. had everything.

  1141. So he was expecting

1142. to ask for some kind of gift

1143. or some kind of favor.

  1144. But what the man,

  1145. the poor man,

  1146. said to him was,

  1147. You left your palace.

1148. You left all your nice clothes.

1149. You left all your good food behind.

  1150. And you came here

  1151. into my home,

1152. this dark cellar of a place.

1153. And you ate my scraps

  1154. of food with me.

  1155. He said,

1156. That is enough for me.

  1157. Because to me,

  1158. you have given yourself.

1159. You gave yourself to me.

  1160. Well, that's what Jesus

  1161. has done for us.

  1162. He left heaven.

1163. He left his father's side.

1164. He left all of that glory behind.

  1165. The Bible says

  1166. he made himself nothing.

1167. And he came to his people.

  1168. God sent his son

  1169. into this world.

1170. And they would call him

  1171. Emmanuel,

1172. is one word name given to him.

  1173. Which means,

  1174. God with us.

  1175. Just imagine that.

  1176. The king of glory,

  1177. the king of all,

  1178. has come to us.

  1179. To be alongside us.

  1180. To be with us.

  1181. Jesus himself

  1182. reminded his disciples

  1183. just before

1184. he was going to be put to death.

1185. He said in John 16,

1186. I have said these things to you

  1187. that you may,

  1188. that in me

  1189. you may have peace.

  1190. Because in the world

  1191. you will have troubles.

  1192. But take heart,

  1193. he said,

  1194. for I have overcome

  1195. the world.

  1196. You see,

  1197. peace with Jesus

1198. isn't that all our troubles

1199. are going to go away.

  1200. But peace with Jesus

  1201. is that we know

1202. that he is with us.

  1203. And again,

1204. that's one of the greatest gifts

  1205. we can experience.

  1206. To know

  1207. God

  1208. with

  1209. us.

  1210. But that's the wonder

  1211. of his gift

  1212. to us.

  1213. That he has come

  1214. to be

  1215. with us.

1216. And that is what we are to remember.

1217. So we have the gift

  1218. of a saviour.

  1219. We have the gift

  1220. of peace.

  1221. And now thirdly,

1222. we are just going to read

  1223. a few more verses

  1224. in Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

1225. and see a third gift

1226. that he gives to us.

  1227. So we think of

  1228. the gift here

  1229. in Luke 2.

1230. We are going to read

  1231. from verse 17

  1232. down to verse 20.

  1233. Again,

  1234. it's the shepherds

  1235. and their experience

  1236. here.

  1237. Here.

1238. And when they saw it,

  1239. they made known

  1240. the saying

1241. that had been told them

  1242. concerning this child.

1243. And all who heard it

  1244. wondered

  1245. at what the shepherds

  1246. told them.

  1247. But Mary treasured up

  1248. all these things,

  1249. pondering them

  1250. in her heart.

  1251. And the shepherds

  1252. returned,

  1253. glorifying

  1254. and praising God

  1255. for all that they

  1256. had heard

  1257. and seen

  1258. as it had

  1259. been told them.

  1260. Well,

  1261. there's a third thing

1262. I want us to see here.

  1263. A third gift.

  1264. And it's the gift

  1265. of praise.

  1266. We have the gift

  1267. of a saviour

1268. and we have the gift

  1269. of peace.

  1270. And if we enjoy

  1271. these things,

1272. what does that make us?

1273. What should that make us?

  1274. It should make us

  1275. thankful

  1276. and giving thanks

  1277. to God

  1278. and praising

  1279. his name.

1280. And that's what we see

  1281. the shepherds

  1282. did here.

  1283. They went

  1284. to see for themselves

1285. what they had been told

  1286. by the angels

  1287. and they saw

  1288. Jesus

  1289. in the manger.

  1290. They saw him

1291. just as they had been told.

  1292. And now

  1293. it says

  1294. they returned.

  1295. They come back

  1296. from seeing this

  1297. and it's changed them.

  1298. It's made such a difference

  1299. in their lives.

  1300. They're full of joy.

1301. The fear that they'd had

  1302. when they first saw

  1303. the angel

  1304. that is gone.

  1305. Now they are praising

  1306. and glorifying God,

  1307. loving the Lord

1308. for what he has done

  1309. for them.

  1310. You know,

1311. it would have been easy

  1312. for the shepherds

  1313. out in the fields

  1314. to just stay

  1315. where they were.

  1316. To think to themselves,

  1317. we can't go

  1318. and see

  1319. this baby

  1320. that they're talking about,

  1321. this saviour

  1322. of the world

  1323. that God has promised.

  1324. we can't go

  1325. and see him.

  1326. You must have

  1327. to be really important

  1328. to go and see

  1329. this king.

  1330. You must have

  1331. to be really special.

  1332. We'd probably

  1333. just stay

  1334. where we are.

  1335. But that's not

  1336. what they did.

  1337. Imagine yourself

  1338. and it's Christmas

  1339. morning

  1340. and you're thinking,

  1341. I wonder if there's

  1342. presents

  1343. under the tree

  1344. for me.

  1345. Are you just going

1346. to stay in your bed

  1347. and think,

  1348. oh, there's probably

  1349. nothing there for me?

  1350. Are you just going

  1351. to stay away

1352. or are you really desperate

  1353. to see something?

1354. To see what there is

  1355. for you?

  1356. If you're really desperate,

1357. what are you going to do?

  1358. You're not going

  1359. to stay in bed.

1360. You're going to get up.

1361. You're going to rush down.

  1362. You're going to get

  1363. to the tree

  1364. and you're going

1365. to pick up the box

  1366. and you're going

  1367. to open it

  1368. and see

  1369. what there is

  1370. for you.

  1371. Well, the shepherds

  1372. were so excited

  1373. by what they heard

  1374. that that's exactly

1375. what they did as well.

  1376. They didn't hang about.

  1377. They didn't wait

1378. to get a special invitation.

  1379. They were already told

  1380. that this gift

  1381. had been given

  1382. for them.

1383. And so what they did,

  1384. they went

  1385. to see for themselves.

  1386. They did three things.

  1387. They responded.

  1388. Again, that is what

1389. we have to do as well.

1390. When we hear this message

  1391. of a Savior,

1392. it's not just to ignore it

1393. and to push it away.

  1394. That's not for me.

  1395. It is.

  1396. This is the gift

  1397. of a Savior

  1398. given to the world,

  1399. to all who would

  1400. believe in Him.

1401. So we are to respond.

  1402. The second thing

  1403. they did was

  1404. they rejoiced.

  1405. They gave praise

  1406. to God

1407. for what He had done

  1408. for them,

1409. all that they were seeing.

  1410. And then it says

  1411. they returned.

  1412. They went back

  1413. to their homes,

  1414. to their work,

1415. but in a different way.

  1416. They were full

  1417. of rejoicing

  1418. in God.

  1419. They were full

  1420. of the joy

  1421. of the Lord.

  1422. Their hearts

  1423. were changed.

  1424. And that is what

  1425. we want

  1426. as we come

  1427. to see Jesus,

  1428. to see Him

  1429. as a Savior,

  1430. to see Him

  1431. as the one

  1432. who is able

  1433. to give peace,

  1434. that we would

  1435. see Him

  1436. as the one

  1437. who we can

  1438. give all our

  1439. praise to.

  1440. Yesterday

  1441. in the club

  1442. I asked a question.

  1443. What does God

  1444. want us

  1445. to give

  1446. to Him?

  1447. And one of the

  1448. answers that was

  1449. given

  1450. was a great

  1451. answer.

  1452. It was singing

  1453. that we are

  1454. to praise Him

  1455. in song.

  1456. And that's

  1457. what the shepherds

  1458. did here.

  1459. They went away

  1460. praising God.

  1461. The shepherds

  1462. returned glorifying

  1463. and praising God

  1464. for all that

  1465. they had heard

  1466. and seen

  1467. as it had been

  1468. told them.

  1469. Well, as we

  1470. come to hear

  1471. of the greatest

  1472. gift of all,

  1473. a Savior

  1474. who is able

  1475. to give us

  1476. peace,

  1477. today let us

  1478. all go away

  1479. from here.

  1480. Let us all

  1481. return to our

  1482. homes,

  1483. to our workplaces,

  1484. to our schools

  1485. this week,

  1486. to go to all

  1487. the concerts

  1488. or whatever

  1489. else you'll

  1490. be doing

  1491. this week,

  1492. hearing the

  1493. Christmas story

  1494. in different

  1495. ways,

  1496. but praising

  1497. God for His

  1498. gift of a

  1499. Savior to

  1500. us.

  1501. There's that

  1502. Christmas carol

  1503. in the bleak

  1504. midwinter.

  1505. We had it in

  1506. the club

  1507. yesterday.

  1508. I just want to

  1509. share these

  1510. verses again

  1511. because it

  1512. asks us,

  1513. what are we

  1514. giving to

  1515. God for all

  1516. that He has

  1517. done for us?

  1518. He doesn't

  1519. want us to

  1520. just give

  1521. money or

  1522. our time

  1523. to Him.

  1524. These are all

  1525. important things,

  1526. but listen to

  1527. what this verse

  1528. says.

  1529. What can I

  1530. give Him?

  1531. Poor as I

  1532. am.

  1533. If I were a

  1534. shepherd,

  1535. I would give

  1536. a lamb.

  1537. If I were a

  1538. wise man,

  1539. I would do

  1540. my part.

  1541. But what can I

  1542. give Him?

  1543. Give Him

  1544. my heart.

  1545. That is what

  1546. Jesus asks

  1547. of us.

  1548. That as we

  1549. hear about the

  1550. greatest gift

  1551. of all,

  1552. a Savior

  1553. given,

  1554. the one who

  1555. is able to

  1556. give peace,

  1557. the one who

  1558. we can go

  1559. away from

  1560. here today,

  1561. praising Him

  1562. for all His

  1563. goodness to

  1564. us,

  1565. we can give

  1566. Him our

  1567. heart.

  1568. And that

  1569. means believing

  1570. in Him

  1571. and trusting

  1572. in Him

  1573. and all

  1574. that His

  1575. word says,

  1576. every promise

  1577. that we have.

  1578. Because we

  1579. are told,

  1580. just as the

  1581. angel said to

  1582. the shepherds,

  1583. fear not,

  1584. for behold,

  1585. I bring you

  1586. good news

  1587. of great joy

  1588. that will be

  1589. for all the

  1590. people.

  1591. For unto you

  1592. is born this

  1593. day in the

  1594. city of David

  1595. a Savior

  1596. who is Christ

  1597. the Lord.

  1598. Here it

  1599. says,

  1600. a Savior.

  1601. Our prayer

  1602. is that you

  1603. will be able

  1604. to say,

  1605. He is my

  1606. Savior

  1607. and my

  1608. Lord.

  1609. Let us

  1610. pray.

  1611. Our

  1612. Father in

  1613. heaven,

  1614. we thank

  1615. you for

  1616. all the

  1617. special,

  1618. precious

  1619. gifts that

  1620. you have

  1621. given to

  1622. us.

  1623. There are

  1624. so many

  1625. things that

  1626. we take

  1627. for granted.

  1628. There are

  1629. so many

  1630. things that

  1631. we maybe

  1632. even choose

  1633. to ignore.

  1634. But we

  1635. pray that

  1636. as we

  1637. hear of

  1638. the greatest

  1639. gift of

  1640. all,

  1641. a Savior

  1642. born to

  1643. us,

  1644. a Savior

  1645. who is

  1646. Christ the

  1647. Lord.

  1648. We pray

  1649. that we

  1650. will hear

  1651. and receive

  1652. that word

  1653. and delight

  1654. and praise

  1655. in it

  1656. and rejoice

  1657. in your

  1658. goodness to

  1659. us and

  1660. that we

  1661. would come

  1662. to give

  1663. your heart

  1664. to put

  1665. our trust

  1666. in you

  1667. for we

  1668. ask it

  1669. all in

  1670. Jesus'

  1671. name and

  1672. for his

  1673. sake.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. We're

  1676. going to

  1677. conclude by

  1678. singing once

  1679. more,

  1680. praising God.

  1681. we're

  1682. going to

  1683. sing in

  1684. Psalm 122

    Psalms 122:6–9

  1685. verse 6

  1686. to 9,

  1687. three stanzas.

  1688. It's a

  1689. Scottish

  1690. Psalter

  1691. version.

  1692. Psalm 122,

  1693. the tuner's

  1694. St.

  1695. Paul.

  1696. Again,

  1697. this is a

  1698. wonderful

  1699. psalm that

  1700. we can sing

  1701. together just

  1702. now and

  1703. make it a

  1704. prayer for

  1705. ourselves as

  1706. well.

  1707. For the

  1708. peace of

  1709. God to

  1710. reign,

  1711. around us.

  1712. Pray that

  1713. Jerusalem may

  1714. have peace

  1715. and felicity.

  1716. Let them

  1717. that love

  1718. thee and

  1719. thy peace

  1720. have still

  1721. prosperity.

  1722. We'll sing

  1723. these three

  1724. verses.

  1725. We stand

  1726. to sing

  1727. to God's

  1728. praise.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Amen.

  1735. Amen.

  1736. Amen.

  1737. Amen.

  1738. Amen.

  1739. Amen.

  1740. Amen.

  1741. Amen.

  1742. Amen.

  1743. Amen.

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. Amen.

  1747. Amen.

1748. And let thy maid, thy palaces, cross-veved, dear retain.

1749. Bound for my friends and brethren, saints, peace be in thee, I'll stay.

1750. And for the house of God our Lord, I'll seek thy good always.

1751. We're going to close in a minute with a benediction.

1752. And after that, I'll go to the main door.

1753. And the children, you'll be going out the door to my left here, going through to the hall.

1754. And get yourselves ready and organized.

1755. We look forward to hearing the songs that you were learning yesterday and seeing the pictures.

1756. And everybody, again, is very welcome to come through to the hall for that.

  1757. We'll close with a benediction.

1758. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  1759. Amen.

  1760. Amen.

  1761. Amen.

  1762. Amen.

  1763. Amen.

  1764. Amen.

  1765. Amen.

  1766. Amen.

  1767. Amen.

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. Amen.

  1772. Amen.

  1773. Amen.

  1774. Amen.

  1775. Amen.

  1776. Amen.

  1777. Amen.

  1778. Amen.
