  1. Let's join together again in prayer. Let's call upon the Lord.

  2. O Lord, our God, as we once more come before you to seek your blessing and to give you thanks,

  3. we do come before you, O Lord, as those who confess our need,

  4. that your Spirit would once again work in our hearts and minds,

  5. that we may be stirred up in our souls to magnify and bless the Lord,

  6. that we might find our dependence upon you increased,

  7. that we might grow too, O Lord, in the love of your name and in the service that we owe to you.

  8. Bless us then, we pray today as a congregation of your people.

  9. We pray, Lord, that you would bless each and every family represented here,

  10. each and every family belonging to us, even if they're not able to be out here this morning.

  11. We ask your blessing for those who are watching online and participating that way in the service.

  12. We give thanks, Lord, for the technology that enables people who cannot come physically out,

  13. that they would nevertheless find a means by which they involve themselves in the service as it proceeds.

  14. We pray especially that the preaching of the gospel might today come to be blessed to those who hear it,

  15. either here or online.

  16. We thank you, Lord, for the many encouragements that you give us in relation to people's comments

  17. with regard to your word and how they prize it and how it remains to them a precious, precious gift from God.

  18. We pray today, Lord, for each one of us here.

  19. You know our needs and you know our concerns.

  20. You read our hearts and you're able to deal with us as no other can.

  21. We thank you today, Lord, for that, for the way that it brings to us encouragement,

  22. that we can bring all our concerns to God, even if we at times ourselves, Lord,

  23. feel unable to express them and put them adequately into words.

  24. You are able to read our thoughts and read our hearts.

  25. You are able, Lord, to read all that we experience in our inmost soul,

  26. the pains of our heart, the joys of our heart, our confessions of sin and shortcoming.

  27. We pray that as we come to you today, Lord, we may know anew of your blessing,

  28. of your hand upon us and of those rich things of the gospel being blessed to us once again.

  29. We ask, Lord, your blessing today for those who are ill or in other ways unable to be here with us today.

  30. We pray that you bless us in our families, in our family circles.

  31. We pray that whatever our circumstances, Lord, in life may be,

  32. help us to realize that they are ordered by your providence.

  33. As we look to you and seek your blessing,

  34. so you are able to bless our events of our lives to us as well,

  35. the providences in which we are involved.

  36. For you have ordered them and you have patterned them according to your wisdom.

  37. We pray, Lord, as we go through from day to day in life,

  38. that we may learn more and more to place our confidence and our trust in the hands of the Lord.

  39. Lord, bless those who are ill at this time.

  40. We pray that your blessing will reach them in their time of illness.

  41. We pray for your good hand to be upon them.

  42. We pray for their recovery.

  43. We pray that you bless their families.

  44. We pray especially, Lord, for those who are seriously ill

  45. and ask that you bless them whether at home or in hospice or in hospital.

  46. Graciously provide for them, we pray,

  47. and for all who care for us.

  48. During these times, we ask, O Lord, for thankful hearts,

  49. that you continue to remember us with those to whom you have given the skills

  50. that are able to deal with us and to nurse us,

  51. whether we are physically or mentally in need.

  52. We pray for those who have mental health issues at this time,

  53. and we commend them to you also.

  54. We ask, O Lord, that we may constantly bear them before you,

  55. and that you are able to deal with us in our minds as well as with our physical needs,

  56. that you would graciously, Lord,

  57. provide for them at this time your own healing and supporting touch in their lives.

  58. We pray, too, for those who are lonely and those who are isolated at this time

  59. when many people are able to be together to enjoy so much at this time of year.

  60. Lord, we recognize that there are others of whom this is not true.

  61. We pray for those who are on their own,

  62. for those who feel the time long,

  63. for those who don't have family members to call and visit them.

  64. We pray for those, Lord, caught up with various types of addictions.

  65. We pray for them and ask that you would, O Lord,

  66. that you would come into their lives powerfully and deliver them.

  67. And we pray that you would bless those who seek to give them counsel and advice and help.

  68. We pray, too, Lord, for those who experience the difficulties and trials of old age,

  69. for those whose memory is beginning to fail or has failed already.

  70. Remember them, Lord.

  71. Remember the trauma, the families for whom the trauma of these things is very real each day.

  72. We pray for those who today feel exhausted with looking after others.

  73. And we feel themselves, Lord, that their health is declining

  74. because they so willingly and lovingly give of their time to look after others.

  75. Remember them, Lord, we pray.

  76. And grant to continue to remember us as a people, as a community, and as a nation.

  77. Gracious One, remember us, we pray,

  78. with the power of your Spirit.

  79. Bless the gospel amongst us and make even these times when Jesus is probably more often spoken of

  80. than at other times.

  81. We ask, O Lord, that your word as it goes forth, even as it is read,

  82. might prove to be a blessing to many.

  83. Remember, we pray, the world at large as well.

  84. Lord, we are so conscious of how the peace that is often mentioned at this time of year

  85. is very much lacking in different parts of the world.

  86. O Lord, remember these nations and peoples of the world

  87. who are embroiled in war, in hatred, in violence, in strife.

  88. And I ask, O Lord, that your word may go forth with power

  89. to bring many people out of such situations,

  90. and even in these situations, to know yourself.

  91. And we pray for days of increasing peace in our nations and throughout the world.

  92. And we pray that the peace of the gospel especially

  93. will come to permeate the hearts and minds of many people,

  94. to lay aside hatred and violence,

  95. and come to follow the Lord himself as the Prince of Peace.

  96. And Lord, we ask that we may find better days to come

  97. than we see in these present days.

  98. And we pray that you would bless us now as we continue to wait upon you here.

  99. Bless your word to us especially.

  100. Open up our hearts and our minds to receive the teaching of your word.

  101. And graciously receive our thanks.

  102. Cleanse us from all our sin.

  103. And we ask it freely in Jesus' name.

  104. Amen.

  105. Amen.

  106. Amen.

  107. Well, if we turn now to the gospel of Luke, chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  108. We're going to look, as we said already, at verse 20 for a little time.

  109. Luke, chapter 2, and verse 20.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  110. And I'm dividing the sermon into two just to make it a bit easier,

  111. maybe for the young ones to listen,

  112. so that they're not such a stretch of mind for them to listen.

  113. So we're going to have two main points,

  114. and in between we'll sing another psalm,

  115. as it is on the outline of the service in the bulletin.

  116. So our text for today is Luke, chapter 2, and verse 20.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  117. Verse 19, sorry.

  118. But Mary treasured up all these things,

  119. pondering them in her heart.

  120. A loving mother never forgets any detail of her children's lives,

  121. if she can help it at all.

  122. Everything affecting her children for a loving mother

  123. is always remembered, always thought upon,

  124. always things that she tries to work her way through in her own mind.

  125. She remembers when they were born.

  126. She remembers before they were born.

  127. She remembers what they were like when they were born.

  128. She remembers their early days.

  129. She remembers their school days.

  130. She remembers their sufferings, their times of illness.

  131. She remembers many other things about them and what they said.

  132. She remembers them growing up.

  133. She remembers what was said of them by other people.

  134. And all of that she keeps in her mind.

  135. All of that she goes over from time to time, if not on a daily basis.

  136. Because to a loving mother, what is more precious than her children,

  137. apart from the Lord himself?

  138. That's how it is with Mary in verse 19 of this chapter.

  139. Mary is trying to put all of that together.

  140. Because what she's doing, as we'll see,

  141. is taking the things that she has seen and the things that she has heard,

  142. and putting all of that together, or trying to put all of that together in her heart and her mind.

  143. And as she's doing so, we read here that she treasured up all these things,

  144. pondering them in her heart.

  145. In her heart.

  146. So Mary is really noting the things that she had seen, the things that she had heard.

  147. She's trying to put all that together.

  148. Remember, this is a very early stage in the New Testament.

  149. Jesus has just been born.

  150. She had heard prophecies about him.

  151. She knew prophecies from the Old Testament scriptures about the Messiah who was coming.

  152. And as we'll see, she had been told by the angel, and now by the shepherds, things about this child.

  153. And as she tried to put all that together, we read here that she treasured these things in her heart,

  154. and she pondered them.

  155. She thought deeply about them.

  156. And you notice the word, but, at the beginning of the verse,

  157. but Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  158. And that little word is always very important.

  159. Because what it's saying is, here is Mary, who is somewhat different to the others that are mentioned.

  160. We read that all who heard it, in verse 18, wondered at what the shepherds told them.

  161. They were amazed about it, but it doesn't really say that it affected their lives very much,

  162. apart from the fact that they wondered at it.

  163. They were amazed at it.

  164. But it didn't seem to change their lives in any way.

  165. But Mary pondered these things in her heart.

  166. Most of the people who heard the shepherds, who heard these things being told,

  167. it was interesting for the moment.

  168. They wondered at it.

  169. They filled them with a sense of amazement.

  170. But it seems to have just dissipated very quickly after that.

  171. And so it was throughout the whole ministry of Jesus.

  172. But Mary treasured these things and pondered them in her heart.

  173. And so especially about Mary.

  174. And the first point I want to make is that Mary's treasuring and pondering is a treasuring and pondering of the good news.

  175. Of the news of Jesus, the news that is, in fact, the gospel itself.

  176. We'll look at that.

  177. Mary's treasuring and pondering of the good news.

  178. Then we'll have a wee break for our singing.

  179. And secondly, we'll look at the benefits for ourselves of treasuring and pondering the things that God has brought us in the gospel.

  180. So, Mary's treasuring and pondering the good news.

  181. Well, it says here, she treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  182. And the question in your mind possibly is, what things?

  183. What things is the verse speaking about?

  184. She treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  185. Well, literally, the verse actually says words.

  186. In the Greek text of the verse, I should say, Mary treasured up all these words or sayings, pondering them in her heart.

  187. And you've got to go over the first part of Luke's gospel in order to actually see from chapter 1 and verse 26.

  188. There's Gabriel, the angel sent from God to a virgin, to this Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph.

  189. And then it goes on to tell what the angel said to Mary.

  190. So, there's the beginning of things, of the words, of the information that God sent to Mary, to this young woman.

  191. And then you find later on in chapter 2, later on in chapter 1, that you find Mary coming to visit Elizabeth,

  192. a cousin who was going to give birth to John the Baptist.

  193. And you find a conversation that took place there as well.

  194. And the words of Elizabeth especially about the child that Mary was going to have.

  195. So, that was something that was significant and important for Mary to take with her.

  196. Words of the angel, words of Elizabeth.

  197. Now she comes here again to hear from the shepherds about what they had experienced and what had been told them,

  198. especially what you find in verse 14 there.

  199. Glory to God in the highest.

  200. On earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  201. Or peace and goodwill to all men, as it's translated elsewhere.

  202. And the message then came in the shepherds as they told the things that they had been told themselves by the angel.

  203. So, here at verse 19 you find Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  204. So, all of these things that she was told, the information, the revelation from God,

  205. especially about this child that she had now given birth to in chapter 2,

  206. she treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

  207. And these two words go together in a very important way.

  208. Treasuring it and pondering it.

  209. They belong together.

  210. And in fact, we'll see that something you really treasure in your heart is something you're going to be thinking about often.

  211. And that's exactly what you have.

  212. Mary was treasuring the things in her heart that she heard.

  213. And as she was treasuring them, so she pondered them.

  214. She considered them further.

  215. She thought about them.

  216. She was trying in her mind to just get to grips with all that had been said.

  217. And treasured is an important word.

  218. Let's look at the two words separately, although they're joined together, as I said, in a very important way.

  219. Mary treasured up all these things.

  220. It really means to keep very carefully something that is precious to you.

  221. Think of something like precious jewels, for example, items of precious jewelry.

  222. Very often they're kept together, especially ones that are most precious to you.

  223. They're kept together, and they're kept carefully.

  224. And very often you ponder them in your mind or think about them as well, because they're precious to you.

  225. That's how we can look at God's words to Mary.

  226. But more than that, God's words in the whole of the gospel message.

  227. God's words, indeed, in the whole of the Bible.

  228. That's what you really have in your Bibles today, friends.

  229. That's what you have, a collection of these precious jewels that God has given us.

  230. These jewels of truth, these precious items, these precious words of God that you find set out in this collection in the Scriptures.

  231. What do you have in the Bible?

  232. You have statements from God.

  233. You have promises from God.

  234. You have commands from God.

  235. You have exhortations from God.

  236. You have different kinds of invitations from God.

  237. Various other types of passages that you have all the way through the Bible, which we regard rightly as the Word of God,

  238. come to be put together over all of these centuries, but now freely in your possession and mine,

  239. as these precious spiritual jewels that God has given us in this collection box of the Bible.

  240. What are they for?

  241. What is this for?

  242. Why has God revealed all this to us?

  243. Why are we today on Christmas Eve worshiping God here and using the Bible as a central feature,

  244. if not the central feature of our service, of our worship?

  245. Well, because these words of God are to be treasured.

  246. They're to be looked after and prized in our hearts as Mary prized the words that came from God,

  247. whether it was from the angel or through the shepherds.

  248. She regarded them as God having given her this information.

  249. This information about Jesus.

  250. Are we treasuring the incarnation today?

  251. Are we treasuring the truth and the fact of the Son of God coming into this world to be born as a human,

  252. taking our human nature to himself?

  253. Are we treasuring it today in the way that you find others in the Bible described as treasuring the words of God?

  254. You go through that great Psalm, Psalm 119, which is really about the Word of God and responses to the Word of God

  255. and attitudes to the Word of God, different words used there for the Word of God.

  256. Statutes, precepts, words, commands, comes to the same thing.

  257. That's what you've got packed into your Bible.

  258. And in that one of the verses there in Psalm 119, verse 162 says,

    Psalms 119:162

  259. I prize your word as one that finds great spoil or great treasure.

  260. As if he had come across the most precious jewels that you could ever see in this life.

  261. That's what he says about his word.

  262. I prize your word.

  263. I prize your commandment.

  264. I value them so highly.

  265. As someone who has come across great spoil.

  266. Is that what the incarnation is to yourself and to myself today?

  267. Is the coming of Jesus something you prize deeply as your most precious jewels?

  268. Is the truth about Jesus given that place in your heart and my heart today?

  269. So we find her treasuring.

  270. These words.

  271. And then also pondering.

  272. She treasured up all these words, pondering them in her heart.

  273. Now pondering is another interesting word.

  274. Because it literally means to gather things together.

  275. Or to assemble things together.

  276. That's really the background meaning, if you like, of the word.

  277. And it's developed different meanings and nuances from that background meaning.

  278. She was pondering.

  279. Something she went on doing.

  280. That's the language that used shows.

  281. This is something that she went on doing.

  282. It wasn't something that just came to her for a moment.

  283. She didn't just ponder it for a few brief moments and then forget about it and move on to something else.

  284. Because the verses really put in such a way that Mary treasured up all these things and went on pondering them in her heart.

  285. She kept on assimilating, putting together these great truths that she had come to be spoken to by God.

  286. So it means really bringing things together, comparing things, weighing things up.

  287. Now here we are today and we're in a way like Mary because this word of God, this truthful word of God is reliable.

  288. When you read about this event, this particular event itself, it's really because you can trust the word of God as being accurate.

  289. It's really taking you back.

  290. It's just as if you were there.

  291. It's just as if you were there before the manger.

  292. As if you were there kneeling in front of the manger with the infant Jesus in it.

  293. Are we pondering it?

  294. Are we trying to bring together today everything that's revealed about this Jesus for our benefit?

  295. Are the things of the Old Testament, the things that we find in the New Testament Gospels,

  296. the things that Paul wrote and Peter wrote and John wrote,

  297. these are all the precious jewels.

  298. These are all the wonderful jewels of truth.

  299. And here is Mary as she finds all of these sayings and these statements and these words.

  300. What is she doing?

  301. She's bringing them together.

  302. That's essentially what Bible study is.

  303. It's not just coming to church once in a week or twice in a week or whatever and listening to a sermon.

  304. Good though that is.

  305. Important though that is.

  306. Significant though that is.

  307. Beneficial we hope though that is.

  308. It's something that you follow up by putting together, by assembling together each and every day the things that God has revealed.

  309. And especially as we're here today focusing on the coming of Christ.

  310. All the things that have to do with His coming.

  311. All the things that have to do with the Son of God and this wonderful, amazing fact that He took our human nature.

  312. It's for our thinking of.

  313. It's for our thinking of.

  314. For our weighing up.

  315. You see Mary you could say here is exercising her memory, her mind and her heart.

  316. All three elements of her person, if you like, of her soul are engaged in this treasuring and in this pondering.

  317. It's something that affected her emotionally.

  318. She's using her heart is in it.

  319. It's not something just formal and stiff and distant.

  320. She's caught up in it.

  321. Her mind obviously is caught up in it.

  322. Her memory is caught up in it.

  323. She's remembering the things she heard.

  324. Her mind is trying to work through them.

  325. She's thinking deeply about it and is moving her heart.

  326. All of that is in exercise at the manger of the Lord.

  327. And we're at the manger of the Lord today.

  328. Where's my heart?

  329. How is it with my heart?

  330. Is it hitting my emotions?

  331. How is it with my mind?

  332. How is it with my will?

  333. Has it made me more aware of my need to depend upon Christ?

  334. To love Jesus?

  335. To talk about Jesus?

  336. To commend Jesus?

  337. As I kneel in front of the manger today,

  338. what is it with my heart?

  339. And my mind and my memory?

  340. Am I treasuring this?

  341. Am I pondering the incarnation, the coming of the Lord?

  342. Is it something that in the exercise of my mind?

  343. And am I saying from today onwards,

  344. this is something that I will have to do every day.

  345. It's something I want to do even for a few moments.

  346. At the beginning or at the end of a day or both.

  347. I'm trying throughout each day that I live

  348. to exercise my mind, my heart, my memory

  349. and gather together as I go along through life

  350. those things that have to do with Jesus.

  351. The things that have to do with the truth of God incarnate,

  352. God in the manger,

  353. God coming into this world,

  354. God the Savior,

  355. God the Redeemer,

  356. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  357. So Mary's treasuring and pondering the good news.

  358. She treasured up all these things,

  359. pondering them in her heart.

  360. Treasuring them as you keep precious jewels together

  361. and pondering them as you try and bring together

  362. all of these truths about the Lord

  363. and how you not just store them in your heart

  364. but work your way through them

  365. and the relationship between

  366. each and every part of the truth about Jesus

  367. as they're brought to you in the Bible.

  368. So we'll pause just for a moment now

  369. and sing.

  370. And this time we're singing

  371. from Psalm 119

  372. and from verse 33,

  373. that's on page 159.

  374. Verses 33 to 40.

  375. Teach me to follow your decrees

  376. then I will keep them to the end.

  377. Give insight and I'll keep your law

  378. with all my heart to it attend.

  379. We'll sing the four stanzas down to verse 40.

  380. To God's praise.

  381. Teach me to follow your decrees

  382. then I will keep them to the end.

  383. In this I count by being pure law

  384. with all my heart to it attend.

  385. With me endure

  386. the man's breath.

  387. For there, O Lord,

  388. delight I find

  389. and guide my heart

  390. to war to loss.

  391. from selfish gain

  392. from selfish gain

  393. reset my mind.

  394. O turn my eyes

  395. from worthless things

  396. give life according

  397. to your word.

  398. To me, your servant

  399. keep your flesh

  400. so that you may be feared, O Lord.

  401. remove from me

  402. the shame I dread

  403. your loss

  404. excel

  405. in uprightness

  406. O how I long

  407. for your decrees

  408. deserve me

  409. in your righteousness

  410. well the second point

  411. we want to spend a little bit of time over

  412. is the benefits for ourselves

  413. of treasuring and pondering

  414. the truth about Jesus

  415. or the things of the gospel.

  416. We've seen Mary's treasuring

  417. and pondering

  418. and something of what these words mean

  419. what benefit is it to ourselves

  420. to treasure

  421. and to ponder the things of Christ

  422. the things of the gospel.

  423. Well, three things

  424. I'm going to mention

  425. first of all

  426. it helps us grow

  427. in our understanding of Jesus

  428. helps us grow

  429. in our understanding of Jesus

  430. who he is

  431. that he is indeed God

  432. that he is God

  433. having come into this world

  434. he didn't cease to be God

  435. he was still the creator

  436. and the upholder of the universe

  437. mysteriously and wonderfully

  438. even in becoming human.

  439. He didn't lay aside his deity

  440. he didn't lay aside

  441. any of the attributes of godhood

  442. when he came into this world

  443. and became man.

  444. So as we bring together

  445. the truths of the gospel

  446. and of the Bible together

  447. in understanding Jesus

  448. we grow in our understanding

  449. of who he is

  450. and it's important

  451. we always ask

  452. who is this?

  453. Luke's gospel asks that

  454. a number of times

  455. we find passages

  456. where the question

  457. is asked by various people

  458. who is this man?

  459. And it's such an important question

  460. who is he?

  461. Not just what has he done

  462. but who is he?

  463. He is the Son of God

  464. that's his person

  465. the Son of God

  466. who took human nature

  467. the human nature

  468. does not describe

  469. in itself entirely

  470. who he is

  471. because he is

  472. the person of the Son of God

  473. who took this nature

  474. this human nature

  475. we have to himself

  476. and it helps us grow

  477. in our understanding of Jesus

  478. not only who he is

  479. but why he became human.

  480. Our last study

  481. remember the words

  482. you shall call his name Jesus

  483. for he will save

  484. his people

  485. from their sins.

  486. Why did he come

  487. into this world?

  488. Why did the Son of God

  489. why did God

  490. in his Son

  491. come into this world

  492. to take out human nature

  493. to place himself

  494. as he placed himself

  495. in a situation

  496. of being deprived

  497. of so many comforts

  498. a situation

  499. of being tested

  500. of being tempted

  501. of suffering

  502. a situation

  503. where he ultimately

  504. came to suffer

  505. the death of the cross

  506. and die

  507. the death of the cross

  508. the death

  509. that you and I

  510. deserved

  511. for our sins.

  512. Why?

  513. Why did the Father

  514. send him into the world

  515. to such a situation

  516. and such a death

  517. as he experienced

  518. and accomplished

  519. at Calvary?

  520. Well it's so that

  521. you and I

  522. would be saved

  523. or could be saved

  524. he shall be called Jesus

  525. for he will save

  526. his people

  527. from their sins.

  528. It's not so that we

  529. would have nice stories

  530. about him at Christmas time

  531. it's not so that we

  532. would know formally

  533. the things the Bible

  534. tells us about Jesus

  535. it's not so that we

  536. become accomplished

  537. theologians

  538. not that that's a bad thing

  539. it's so that we'd be saved

  540. so that we come to

  541. possess him

  542. and embrace him

  543. and take him

  544. as he's offered

  545. in the gospel

  546. as the catechism says

  547. as our savior

  548. he is offered

  549. as God's gift

  550. don't leave that gift

  551. unwrapped

  552. this Christmas time

  553. if you haven't

  554. already unwrapped it

  555. what I mean by that

  556. is taking the gift

  557. of God

  558. that Jesus himself

  559. is

  560. and making it

  561. your gift

  562. God's gift

  563. to you

  564. making it personally

  565. your gift

  566. God's gift

  567. to you

  568. your acceptance

  569. of that gift

  570. you would never leave

  571. the most important

  572. and precious gift

  573. given to you

  574. at Christmas time

  575. or any time

  576. and just leave it

  577. unwrapped

  578. and just keep

  579. looking at it

  580. formally

  581. and just leaving it

  582. and ignoring it

  583. and pushing it

  584. into a corner

  585. well some people

  586. sadly do that

  587. with the greatest

  588. gift of all

  589. it's not that they

  590. absolutely

  591. don't care

  592. but they just

  593. don't want to

  594. commit their

  595. whole life

  596. to him

  597. they think

  598. that's just

  599. going too far

  600. that you don't

  601. need to become

  602. as people think

  603. religious

  604. remember

  605. there's a big

  606. difference

  607. between religion

  608. and Jesus

  609. religion

  610. and salvation

  611. religion

  612. itself

  613. is a formal

  614. thing

  615. I know we talk

  616. about the Christian

  617. religion

  618. but sometimes

  619. people think

  620. being a Christian

  621. is just having

  622. religion

  623. and having a Bible

  624. and having a set

  625. of rules

  626. that you value

  627. that you

  628. maybe try

  629. and keep

  630. but no

  631. salvation

  632. is not the same

  633. as religion

  634. salvation

  635. is faith

  636. in Christ

  637. bringing that

  638. salvation

  639. into our

  640. possession

  641. salvation

  642. is being

  643. saved from

  644. our sins

  645. from the

  646. consequences

  647. of our sins

  648. from the guilt

  649. of our sins

  650. I think we saw

  651. that last time

  652. when we saw

  653. the name

  654. Jesus

  655. he will save

  656. his people

  657. from their sins

  658. that's why

  659. he became human

  660. and it helps us

  661. our understanding

  662. of Jesus

  663. but not only

  664. in that sense

  665. to save us

  666. from our sins

  667. but even through

  668. the course of life

  669. we learn about

  670. Jesus

  671. and the benefits

  672. of treasuring

  673. and pondering

  674. the truth about him

  675. is that he will

  676. we will know

  677. his companionship

  678. through life

  679. we will know

  680. that he's with

  681. us through life

  682. we will know

  683. that he stands

  684. beside us

  685. as we go through

  686. the different

  687. experiences

  688. and the difficulties

  689. especially

  690. of life

  691. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  692. and verse 18

  693. you remember

  694. finishes

  695. in that way

  696. he had made

  697. in every respect

  698. like his brethren

  699. that's like

  700. ourselves

  701. human beings

  702. for because

  703. he himself

  704. has suffered

  705. when tempted

  706. he is able

  707. to help

  708. those who are

  709. being tempted

  710. and that word

  711. help means

  712. come to their aid

  713. come alongside

  714. them

  715. and come to

  716. support them

  717. it means

  718. a strengthening

  719. it means

  720. an encouragement

  721. it means

  722. all of the things

  723. that you find

  724. inside that word

  725. help or strengthening

  726. that's why

  727. he came into the world

  728. that's why

  729. he came to die

  730. the death of the cross

  731. that's why

  732. he took out humanity

  733. we don't have

  734. a priest

  735. as Hebrews

  736. elsewhere says

  737. we don't have

  738. a high priest

  739. in heaven

  740. as the high priest

  741. of his people

  742. who is unable

  743. to sympathize

  744. with us

  745. in our weaknesses

  746. doesn't matter

  747. what you have

  748. to confess

  749. today

  750. about yourself

  751. about your concerns

  752. about your worries

  753. about your troubles

  754. about your illnesses

  755. about your state of mind

  756. about your loved ones

  757. you know

  758. that there's someone

  759. today

  760. on the throne

  761. of heaven

  762. who has been

  763. through all of that

  764. himself

  765. and who as the

  766. son of God

  767. in our nature

  768. is now able

  769. to help

  770. to succor

  771. as the AV puts it

  772. to strengthen

  773. to give you

  774. the help you need

  775. that no one else

  776. can give you

  777. that's why

  778. you treasure

  779. and ponder

  780. the truths

  781. about Jesus

  782. because as you

  783. gather them together

  784. you begin more

  785. and more to understand

  786. this savior

  787. is for me

  788. you begin to understand

  789. how can I possibly

  790. go on without him

  791. how can I face

  792. the issues of life

  793. without him

  794. how can I die

  795. without him

  796. how can I go to face

  797. God without having him

  798. as my savior

  799. it helps you to grow

  800. in your understanding

  801. of Jesus

  802. but

  803. secondly it helps us

  804. to grow

  805. in our

  806. appreciation

  807. of Jesus

  808. and once you treasure

  809. and you ponder

  810. the truths

  811. that you find

  812. about Jesus

  813. in the Bible

  814. so as you do that

  815. just as it was

  816. for Mary

  817. there's an increase

  818. in your love

  819. your affection

  820. your regard

  821. for this Jesus

  822. you increase

  823. in your thankfulness

  824. thankfulness to God

  825. for him

  826. thankfulness to himself

  827. for all that he's done

  828. for you

  829. and for who he is

  830. thankfulness for his

  831. perfection

  832. thankfulness for his

  833. faithfulness

  834. thankfulness for everything

  835. the Bible tells you

  836. as you bring all us

  837. you gather us

  838. you ponder these things

  839. and it helps you as well

  840. to add to

  841. your dependence upon them

  842. which you and I

  843. certainly at times

  844. have to confess

  845. it's not as it should be

  846. but the more you find out

  847. about him

  848. and the more you put

  849. these truths together

  850. about Christ

  851. well the more you

  852. add to your dependence

  853. the more you add to

  854. your willingness

  855. to serve him

  856. the more you add

  857. to the concern

  858. to make him known

  859. to your fellow human beings

  860. it's as you find out

  861. more about him

  862. as you treasure

  863. and ponder the truth

  864. about Jesus

  865. in your heart

  866. so you're constrained

  867. all the more

  868. then the more you find out

  869. the more you appreciate that

  870. the more you ponder that

  871. the more you say

  872. I have to tell other people

  873. about this

  874. I have to tell them

  875. where they can find salvation

  876. I have to tell them

  877. about this Jesus

  878. like the woman

  879. of Samaria

  880. in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  881. come and see this man

  882. is not this the Christ

  883. he told me all the things

  884. that ever I did

  885. and what did they do

  886. they went out

  887. from that town

  888. they went out

  889. to meet Jesus

  890. they flocked out

  891. to meet him

  892. and then they said

  893. to the woman

  894. eventually after Jesus

  895. had been with them

  896. for a time

  897. now we believe

  898. not for your word

  899. for we have heard

  900. him ourselves

  901. and know that this

  902. is indeed the Christ

  903. the savior of the world

  904. is that not

  905. where you are today

  906. is this not

  907. the most wonderful thing

  908. in your own experience

  909. that God has given you

  910. the benefit of treasuring

  911. and pondering Jesus

  912. to increase your understanding

  913. of him

  914. and who he is

  915. and what he's done

  916. but to also

  917. grow in your appreciation

  918. because all of these things

  919. as you assimilate them

  920. you see

  921. like Mary

  922. what they will do

  923. is just fill

  924. your praise of God

  925. you'll begin

  926. more and more

  927. just to fill

  928. all of these things

  929. into and fit

  930. these things

  931. into your praise

  932. think of the psalmist

  933. Psalm 116

  934. I love the Lord

  935. because he has heard

  936. my prayers

  937. and listened

  938. to my voice

  939. he speaks then

  940. about

  941. how he was

  942. in such a predicament

  943. how the Lord

  944. heard him

  945. how the Lord

  946. rescued him

  947. and came to his aid

  948. 1 Peter chapter 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  949. and verses 8 and 9

  950. tells us about

  951. Jesus we don't see

  952. physically

  953. here is Peter

  954. writing to

  955. these people

  956. scattered through

  957. all the regions

  958. he mentions

  959. and what's their situation

  960. they're being

  961. persecuted

  962. some of them

  963. for their faith

  964. they're certainly

  965. suffering greatly

  966. for what they believe

  967. for their faithfulness

  968. to Jesus

  969. and they don't see him

  970. they can't see him

  971. physically

  972. like they did

  973. in the days

  974. of the apostles

  975. and these disciples

  976. here

  977. in the gospels

  978. what does Peter say

  979. whom

  980. though not seeing

  981. you love

  982. and in whom

  983. though now you see him

  984. not yet believing

  985. you rejoice

  986. with joy

  987. unspeakable

  988. and full of glory

  989. what is Peter saying

  990. it's saying

  991. the more you put together

  992. in your heart

  993. the more you treasure

  994. in your heart

  995. the more you ponder

  996. in your heart

  997. the things

  998. of the Lord himself

  999. the more it will add

  1000. to your sense

  1001. of appreciation

  1002. and thankfulness

  1003. to God

  1004. and dependence

  1005. upon him

1006. and the more it will

  1007. enlarge

  1008. your determination

  1009. to praise the Lord

  1010. to have your mouth

  1011. filled with praise

  1012. because what Peter

  1013. is really saying

  1014. is

  1015. the more you get

  1016. to know about Jesus

1017. and the more you get

  1018. to know Jesus himself

  1019. especially

  1020. not just knowing

  1021. about him

  1022. but knowing himself

1023. the more you do that

  1024. the more you treasure

  1025. and ponder these things

  1026. the more you have

  1027. a foretaste of heaven

  1028. because that's what

  1029. Peter is saying

  1030. you rejoice

  1031. with joy

  1032. unspeakable

  1033. and full of glory

  1034. where is that?

1035. where is that in perfection?

  1036. it's in heaven

  1037. but it begins

1038. to flow into your heart

  1039. the more you know

  1040. this Jesus

1041. the more you treasure him

1042. the more you ponder him

1043. the more you value him

  1044. the benefits

  1045. of treasuring

  1046. and pondering

1047. well it helps us grow

  1048. in our understanding

  1049. of Jesus

  1050. it helps us grow

  1051. in our appreciation

  1052. of Jesus

  1053. and thirdly finally

  1054. it helps us prepare

  1055. for meeting with Jesus

  1056. the incarnation

  1057. was the beginning

  1058. of his life

  1059. as a human being

  1060. the end of it

  1061. the crowning of it

  1062. end of it

  1063. in that sense

  1064. is in his return

  1065. he's gone to glory

1066. he's sitting at the right hand

  1067. of God

1068. he's presiding over the universe

1069. but he's going to return

1070. and on the day of his return

  1071. he will be seen

  1072. not as he came

  1073. the first time

  1074. as an infant

  1075. in a manger

  1076. dependent on his mother

1077. being nursed by his mother

1078. being helped by his mother

1079. he's not going to come

  1080. then in his humiliation

  1081. and in his dependence

  1082. upon other human beings

  1083. he's going to come

  1084. in his glory

  1085. he's going to come

  1086. in the majesty

  1087. of his kingship

  1088. he's going to become

  1089. he's going to come

  1090. decked out

  1091. in all the garments

  1092. if you like

  1093. of his glorious kingship

1094. he's going to be accompanied

  1095. with an innumerable

  1096. company of angels

  1097. the whole world

  1098. will know

  1099. here is the king

  1100. blow the trumpet

  1101. he's arrived

  1102. you know

  1103. in 1st Thessalonians

  1104. there's a passage

  1105. among others

  1106. that tells us

  1107. how grand

  1108. this will be

  1109. what an immense

  1110. moment this will be

  1111. what an awesome

  1112. thing it will be

  1113. when Jesus returns

  1114. 1st Thessalonians 4

  1115. verses 16 to 17

  1116. for the Lord himself

  1117. will descend from heaven

1118. with a cry of command

1119. with a voice of an archangel

  1120. with the sound

1121. of the trumpet of God

1122. and the dead in Christ

  1123. will rise first

1124. then we who are alive

  1125. who are left

  1126. will be caught up

  1127. together with them

  1128. in the clouds

  1129. to meet the Lord

  1130. in the air

1131. and so we will always

  1132. be with the Lord

  1133. what a moment

  1134. what an event

  1135. what a glorious sight

  1136. what an indescribably

  1137. great coming

  1138. this is

  1139. not a helpless

  1140. babe

  1141. in a manger

  1142. but a king

  1143. of glory

  1144. in all his splendor

  1145. and how do you

  1146. prepare for that

  1147. well you bring

  1148. together in your heart

  1149. you ponder

  1150. you treasure

  1151. all the things

  1152. that are spoken

  1153. about him

  1154. you placed your

  1155. trust in him

  1156. you ask him

  1157. to look after you

  1158. when you come

  1159. through every issue

  1160. of life

  1161. and through death

  1162. and when you come

  1163. to meet him

  1164. in eternity

1165. you see what it's saying

  1166. in verse 18

  1167. of that passage

  1168. in 1 Thessalonians

  1169. therefore

  1170. encourage one another

  1171. with these words

  1172. because these words

  1173. we don't just

  1174. assimilate them

  1175. and gather them

  1176. together

  1177. and ponder them

  1178. and treasure

  1179. in our own hearts

  1180. just for our own

  1181. personal benefit

  1182. as we gather

  1183. together

  1184. we're gathering

  1185. together

  1186. as a people

  1187. who have the same

  1188. truths of God

  1189. prized surely

  1190. and treasured

  1191. in our hearts

  1192. and it's not just

  1193. for our own benefit

  1194. we don't keep it

  1195. to ourselves

  1196. the apostle said

  1197. encourage one another

  1198. with these words

  1199. you remember

  1200. at Christmas time

  1201. how

  1202. as children

  1203. we treasured

  1204. and pondered

  1205. what Christmas

  1206. was going to be

  1207. to us

  1208. we looked forward

  1209. to opening presents

  1210. whether they be

  1211. many or few

  1212. it was always

  1213. an exciting time

  1214. and so it is

  1215. for the children

  1216. who are here today

  1217. and thank you

  1218. for being here today

1219. it's great to have you

  1220. and it's great

  1221. to be here

  1222. at Christmas time

  1223. in church

  1224. worshipping the Lord

  1225. with your parents

  1226. or grandparents

  1227. or other adults

  1228. there's nothing

  1229. we like better

  1230. than having

  1231. children here

  1232. and hearing

  1233. children's noises

  1234. and children's voices

  1235. it doesn't disturb us

  1236. at all

  1237. it encourages us

  1238. it gives us

  1239. a great thrill

  1240. so you're looking

  1241. forward to Christmas

  1242. Christmas day

  1243. aren't you

  1244. looking forward

  1245. to opening your presents

  1246. looking forward

  1247. to actually

  1248. whether or not

  1249. you get the things

  1250. that you asked for

  1251. looking forward

  1252. to just

  1253. that moment

  1254. when you open up

  1255. those presents

  1256. and these thoughts

  1257. right now

  1258. in your mind

  1259. what are you doing

  1260. you're treasuring that

  1261. they're precious to you

  1262. you're pondering it

  1263. you're thinking about it

  1264. your mind

  1265. and your heart

  1266. are engaged in

  1267. thinking about

  1268. these presents

  1269. and opening these presents

  1270. and being

  1271. having a good time

  1272. well that's what

  1273. we do with Jesus

  1274. we treasure him

  1275. we ponder him

1276. until that great day comes

  1277. when he himself

  1278. has the greatest gift

  1279. will arrive before us

  1280. in his glory

  1281. and until that day

  1282. here's our privilege

  1283. friends

  1284. our privilege

  1285. to gather together

  1286. and also

  1287. for ourselves

  1288. individually

  1289. to treasure

  1290. and ponder

  1291. in our hearts

  1292. the truth

  1293. about Jesus

  1294. let's pray

  1295. Lord our God

  1296. we thank you

  1297. for your word

  1298. we thank you

  1299. we thank you

  1300. for all that it

  1301. contains

  1302. we thank you

  1303. especially that it

  1304. brings to us

  1305. that good news

  1306. that great message

  1307. of a saviour

  1308. who was born

1309. in the city of David

  1310. a saviour

  1311. who is Christ

  1312. the Lord

  1313. we thank you

  1314. Lord for

  1315. all that you are

  1316. in yourself

  1317. that you have been

  1318. from all eternity

  1319. as God

  1320. we thank you

  1321. for all that you

  1322. came to be

  1323. in taking our humanity

  1324. to yourself

  1325. we thank you

  1326. for the prospect

  1327. of your coming

  1328. having accomplished

  1329. all that you did

  1330. in this world

  1331. oh Lord

  1332. we thank you

  1333. that your people

  1334. look forward

  1335. to your arrival

1336. yet on the last day

  1337. prepare us

  1338. we pray for that

  1339. and give us daily

  1340. to think

  1341. and to ponder deeply

  1342. and treasure

  1343. in our hearts

  1344. all that is revealed

  1345. about you

  1346. hear us now

  1347. we pray

  1348. for Jesus sake

  1349. Amen

  1350. our final psalm today

  1351. is psalm number 4

  1352. we're singing

  1353. in the

  1354. Sing Psalms version

  1355. of Psalm 4

  1356. that's on page 4

  1357. and the last

  1358. three verses

  1359. from verse 6

1360. oh who can show us

  1361. any good

1362. I hear so many say

  1363. oh Lord

  1364. shine on us

  1365. with your light

  1366. show us your face

  1367. I pray

  1368. you filled my heart

  1369. with greater joy

  1370. than others

  1371. may have found

  1372. as they rejoiced

  1373. at harvest time

  1374. when grain and wine

  1375. abound

  1376. I will lie down

  1377. and sleep in peace

  1378. my heart will rest

  1379. secure

  1380. for you alone

  1381. oh gracious Lord

  1382. will keep me

  1383. safe

  1384. and sure

  1385. these verses

  1386. oh who

  1387. can show us

  1388. any good

1389. I hear so many say

  1390. oh Lord

  1391. shine on us

  1392. with your light

  1393. with your light

  1394. show us

  1395. your face

  1396. I pray

  1397. you filled my heart

  1398. with greater joy

1399. than others may have found

  1400. as they rejoice

  1401. whose ancestors

  1402. could run

  1403. and love

  1404. who can hold

  1405. can increased

  1406. and youth

  1407. more behind

  1408. how and the months

  1409. in heaven

  1410. I will try

  1411. earth

  1412. should to run

  1413. through me

1414. For you alone, O gracious Lord, will keep me safe and sure.

1415. If you allow me to get to the main door, please, I'll see you there after the benediction.

1416. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father,

1417. and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and always. Amen.

  1418. Amen.
