  1. Well, it's good to be together today.

  2. A beautiful day outside, the first day of a new year,

  3. and it's better still to begin,

  4. gathered together in a place of worship,

  5. seeking God's presence and his favor over us.

  6. And we come to worship God.

  7. We'll sing to his praise.

  8. We'll begin by singing Psalm 103,

  9. in the Sing Psalms version, page 135 of the psalm book.

  10. Psalm 103, we'll sing from verse 1 to verse 11.

  11. The tune is before the throne.

  12. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart.

  13. Let me exalt his holy name.

  14. Forget not all his benefits,

  15. his praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  16. We'll sing from verse 1 to 11 to God's praise.

  17. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart.

  18. Let me exalt his holy name.

  19. Our gift of all his benefits,

  20. his praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  21. The Lord gives you all your sins,

  22. And his grace, my soul, in song proclaim.

  23. Your life he rescues from the grave,

  24. And grinds you in his tenderness,

  25. And grinds you in his tenderness.

  26. He's a despise, your deep desires,

  27. Of his unending stores of good.

  28. So that just like the being of strength,

  29. Your youthful anger is renewed.

  30. The Lord is known for righteous acts,

  31. And justice to tantroded ones,

  32. To Moses he made known his ways,

  33. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  34. The Lord is merciful and kind,

  35. To anger slow and full of grace,

  36. He will not constantly reprove,

  37. For in his anger hide his face.

  38. He does not punish our misdeeds,

  39. Or give our sins their just reward,

  40. Our greatest love has high as ten

  41. Towards all those who fear the Lord.

  42. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  43. Let us pray.

  44. Lord our gracious God,

  45. As we begin our time of worship at this,

  46. The beginning of a new year,

  47. We thank you for the privilege that is ours,

  48. The freedom we have to come together this day,

  49. In this way,

  50. To lift up our voices in praise to you,

  51. To sing of your great steadfast love,

  52. To sing of your great goodness to us,

  53. And to come, O Lord,

  54. Seeking to praise you as our God with all our soul,

  55. To seek to worship you as you are worthy of,

  56. And we thank you that this psalm reminds us of your great goodness,

  57. Your mercy towards us.

  58. As it goes on,

  59. That we didn't sing,

  60. As far as east is from the west,

  61. So far his love has borne away our many sins and trespasses.

  62. And we thank you, Lord,

  63. That it is a wonderful psalm to remind us,

  64. At the beginning of a year,

  65. Of how we are to live.

  66. We are to live as a people who give all praise and glory to you.

  67. And we thank you, Lord,

  68. That your mercy is so great,

  69. That you have not turned away from us,

  70. But that you are still a God who looks down upon your people,

  71. A God who looks, O Lord,

  72. For a people to turn to you,

  73. To come to you,

  74. To find rest and joy and salvation,

  75. And all that you offer us through your Son,

  76. Christ Jesus.

  77. And we pray today, Lord,

  78. As we hear your word,

  79. And as we begin in worship a new year,

  80. That has all the uncertainties that lie ahead of us,

  81. We thank you that you are our constant companion,

  82. That you are the one who prepares the way for his people,

  83. That you are the one who goes before us,

  84. And that we can be assured and confident,

  85. That whatever is in store for us,

  86. Whether it be times of joy or trouble,

  87. That we have you there with us.

  88. And so, Lord,

  89. We pray that you will bless us as a people,

  90. In our homes,

  91. In our families,

  92. In our congregation as a whole,

  93. That you will make your face to shine upon us,

  94. That we will know your glory,

  95. Your presence with us,

  96. Day after day.

  97. And we thank you, Lord,

  98. That around the world today,

  99. As a people take in a new year,

  100. As we see much celebration going on around the world,

  101. We see, too,

  102. How many are in a lost state,

  103. How many are without Christ,

  104. How many are perishing in this world.

  105. But we thank you that your gospel is mighty and powerful,

  106. And that you have your people to all ends of the earth,

  107. That your people gather

  108. In so many different parts of the world today,

  109. Lifting up their voices to you as we have,

  110. And will do us well,

  111. Lifting up our praise and our prayers to you,

  112. Asking for your goodness and your mercy

  113. To be upon us as a people,

  114. Asking for you to intervene in ways,

  115. O Lord,

  116. That are so outwith of our control,

  117. When we see, O Lord,

  118. All the troubles of this world,

  119. The situations that we cannot impact ourselves,

  120. Whether it's in the large-scale matters of this world,

  121. Or even in our own individual lives,

  122. Or the lives of others,

  123. Lord,

  124. There are so many things that we feel helpless in,

  125. So many things that we cannot impact ourselves,

  126. But yet we thank you for the joy and the privilege of prayer,

  127. For we know we can depend on you,

  128. As the one who is able to do what we cannot,

  129. What is impossible with man is possible with God,

  130. And so help us in our prayers day after day,

  131. To come in faith,

  132. To come in dependence,

  133. To come in joy to you,

  134. As the one who has opened the way for us,

  135. That we come in the name,

  136. Above every name,

  137. The name of our Lord and Saviour,

  138. Jesus Christ,

  139. The one through whose death we see a way opened up,

  140. When the curtain was torn in two,

  141. As your word describes,

  142. As Jesus was on the cross,

  143. That we saw the way opened up to you,

  144. As our Father in heaven,

  145. That we come through our great high priest,

  146. The Lord Jesus Christ,

  147. And so hear our prayers,

  148. Lord,

  149. And answer according to your will,

  150. And may you bless your word to us today,

  151. As we hear it,

  152. And as we share it together,

  153. And wherever it's shared today,

  154. Lord,

  155. We pray that you would bless it to all ends of the earth,

  156. For your word is mighty and powerful,

  157. It goes out with power,

  158. Lord,

  159. It is able to melt the hardest of hearts,

  160. And we pray,

  161. Lord,

  162. That in every place where your word is proclaimed,

  163. That you will give ears to hear and to understand,

  164. We thank you for those who will gather in a short time,

  165. At the Islay Memorial,

  166. For a service of remembrance there,

  167. We thank you,

  168. Lord,

  169. For the peace of this day today,

  170. That they'll be able to gather there,

  171. And yet in so many ways,

  172. Oh Lord,

  173. It brings even more sadness to that occasion,

  174. When we think of so many years ago,

  175. When so many perished,

  176. So much sadness and sorrow our island experienced,

  177. And that great loss,

  178. We thank you that we can look back in remembrance,

  179. Giving thanks,

  180. Oh Lord,

  181. That through all the years,

  182. Through all the generations,

  183. You are a God who has been faithful,

  184. That you are a God who is able to heal the hurts,

  185. That you are a God who is able to build up,

  186. Even from such disasters,

  187. And we pray,

  188. And we pray,

  189. Lord,

  190. That as your word is preached there,

  191. As Reverend James McKeever will minister to the people,

  192. That you will bless him and uphold him in that,

  193. And give him the words to speak,

  194. And oh Lord,

  195. As this time of year is always a time of reflection,

  196. Looking back,

  197. We think of many who,

  198. As we heard last evening,

  199. Are going through so many difficulties and trials,

  200. There's much sorrow in reflecting,

  201. Looking back,

  202. There may be much anxiety looking forward as well,

  203. But we pray,

  204. Lord,

  205. To know your peace,

  206. To know that peace that passes understanding,

  207. To know your presence and your blessing upon us,

  208. So Lord,

  209. We pray that you will crown our year with your bounty,

  210. That you will do us good,

  211. Oh Lord,

  212. In all the days ahead,

  213. That as we commit ourselves into your hands,

  214. We would know you with us in every way,

  215. We come again confessing our sins,

  216. We confess,

  217. Oh Lord,

  218. How far short we fall,

  219. But again,

  220. As we have sung,

  221. We are reminded,

  222. Lord,

  223. That you are able to cast our sins away,

  224. And we pray,

  225. Lord,

  226. For your forgiveness over us as a people,

  227. As a nation,

  228. As a world,

  229. As we confess,

  230. Oh Lord,

  231. How far from you we have gone,

  232. We pray,

  233. Lord,

  234. That you will bring healing,

  235. And restoration,

  236. And your great day of salvation to us once again,

  237. So Lord,

  238. Hear us,

  239. We pray,

  240. Go before us,

  241. Bless us,

  242. And hear us in all these things,

  243. As we ask it in Jesus' name,

  244. For his sake and glory,

  245. Amen.

  246. We're going to sing again to God's praise,

  247. In Psalm 23,

  248. In the Scottish Psalter,

  249. Psalm 23,

  250. Again,

  251. A psalm that reminds us of our constant need of the Lord,

  252. That he would be our shepherd,

  253. That he would be our shepherd,

  254. In this year ahead,

  255. The Lord's my shepherd,

  256. I'll not want,

  257. He makes me down to lie,

  258. In pastures green,

  259. He leadeth me,

  260. The quiet waters by,

  261. My soul he doth restore again,

  262. And me to walk doth make,

  263. Within the paths of righteousness,

  264. Even for his own name's sake.

  265. We'll sing the whole of this psalm,

  266. The tune is St.

  267. Columba,

  268. And we stand to sing to God's praise.

  269. The Lord's my shepherd,

  270. For God's sake,

  271. For God's sake,

  272. For God's sake,

  273. He leadeth me,

  274. He makes me down to lie,

  275. In pastures green,

  276. He leadeth me,

  277. The quiet waters by,

  278. My soul he doth restore again,

  279. And me to walk doth make,

  280. Within the paths of righteousness,

  281. In pastures green,

  282. In pastures green,

  283. In pastures green,

  284. In pastures green,

  285. In pastures green,

  286. Yet will I fear not ill,

  287. For thou art done,

  288. For thou art done,

  289. Yet will I fear none ill,

  290. For Thou art with me and I will,

  291. And staffed me not for still.

  292. My table, Thou art, has furnished it,

  293. In presence of my foes,

  294. My head the dust with o'er anoint,

  295. And my cup overflows.

  296. Goodness and mercy on my life

  297. Shall surely follow me,

  298. And in process forevermore

  299. My dwelling place shall be.

  300. Well, we can read together in the New Testament,

  301. Paul's letter to the Philippians.

  302. We're going to read in chapter 4,

  303. From the beginning of that chapter,

  304. We can read the whole of this chapter together.

  305. Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  306. At the end of chapter 3,

  307. Paul is speaking to the Philippians

  308. About striving on towards the goal.

  309. We heard a little of that last evening,

  310. The forgetting what lies behind

  311. And straining forward to what lies ahead.

  312. I press towards the goal for the prize

  313. Of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  314. That's in verse 14 of chapter 3.

  315. And then in chapter 4,

  316. He begins with these words,

  317. Therefore, my brothers,

  318. Whom I love and long for,

  319. My joy and crown,

  320. Stand firm thus in the Lord,

  321. My beloved.

  322. I entreat you,

  323. And I entreat Syntyche,

  324. To agree in the Lord.

  325. Yes, I ask you also,

  326. True companion,

  327. Help these women

  328. Who have laboured side by side

  329. With me in the gospel,

  330. Together with Clement

  331. And the rest of my fellow workers,

  332. Whose names are in the book of life.

  333. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  334. Again, I will say,

  335. Rejoice.

  336. Let your reasonableness

  337. Be known to everyone.

  338. The Lord is at hand.

  339. Do not be anxious about anything,

  340. But in everything,

  341. By prayer and supplication.

  342. With thanksgiving,

  343. Let your requests be made known to God.

  344. And the peace of God,

  345. Which surpasses all understanding,

  346. Will guard your hearts and your minds

  347. In Christ Jesus.

  348. Finally, brothers,

  349. Whatever is true,

  350. Whatever is honourable,

  351. Whatever is just,

  352. Whatever is pure,

  353. Whatever is lovely,

  354. Whatever is commendable,

  355. If there is any excellence,

  356. If there is anything worthy of praise,

  357. Think about these things.

  358. What you have learned,

  359. And received,

  360. And heard,

  361. And seen in me,

  362. Practice these things,

  363. And the God of peace

  364. Will be with you.

  365. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly,

  366. That now at length

  367. You have revived your concern for me.

  368. You were indeed concerned for me,

  369. But you had no opportunity.

  370. Not that I am speaking of being in need,

  371. For I have learned,

  372. In whatever situation I am,

  373. To be content.

  374. I know how to be brought low,

  375. And I know how to abound.

  376. In any and every circumstance,

  377. I have learned the secret

  378. Of facing plenty and hunger,

  379. Abundance and need.

  380. I can do all things

  381. Through him who strengthens me.

  382. Yet it was kind of you

  383. To share my trouble.

  384. And you Philippians yourselves

  385. Know that in the beginning

  386. Of the gospel,

  387. When I left Macedonia,

  388. No church entered into partnership with me

  389. In giving and receiving

  390. Except you only.

  391. Even in Thessalonica,

  392. You sent me help

  393. For my needs once and again.

  394. Not that I seek the gift,

  395. But I seek the fruit

  396. That increases to your credit.

  397. I have received full payment and more.

  398. I am well supplied,

  399. Having received from Epaphroditus

  400. The gifts you sent.

  401. A fragrant offering,

  402. A sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

  403. And my God will supply

  404. Every need of yours,

  405. According to his riches

  406. In glory in Christ Jesus.

  407. To our God and Father

  408. Be glory forever and ever.

  409. Amen.

  410. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus.

  411. The brothers who are with me greet you.

  412. All the saints greet you.

  413. Especially those of Caesar's household.

  414. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

  415. Be with your spirit.

  416. Amen.

  417. And may God bless that reading

  418. From his word.

  419. Before we turn to look at some of these verses,

  420. We'll sing again

  421. To God's praise in Psalm 19.

  422. Psalm 19 in the Scottish Psalter.

  423. We're going to sing from verse 7

  424. Down to verse 11.

  425. Page 223 of the psalm books.

  426. Psalm 19 at verse 7.

  427. Page 223.

  428. It reminds us of the wonder of God's word

  429. And how precious it should be to us.

  430. The more than gold,

  431. Ye much find gold to be decided,

  432. Are the psalmist says.

  433. God's law is perfect and converts.

  434. The soul in sin that lies.

  435. God's testimony is most sure

  436. And makes the simple wise.

  437. So tune us in Moravia

  438. And we'll sing from verse 7 to 11.

  439. Amen.

  440. Amen.

  441. Amen.

  442. God's law is perfect and converts.

  443. The soul in sin that lies.

  444. God's testimony is most sure

  445. And makes the simple wise.

  446. The statutes of the Lord are white

  447. And who rejoice the heart

  448. The Lord's covenant is pure and a light

  449. To the eyes impart

  450. Unspaughted is the fear of God

  451. And who rejoice the Lord

  452. And who rejoice the Lord

  453. And who rejoice the Lord

  454. The Son of God

  455. The love of God

  456. And who rejoice the Lord

  457. Are true and righteous

  458. All together

  459. They more than gold, yea, much fine gold, to be decided are.

  460. That honey, honey, from the cold, that trumpet sweeter far.

  461. Born over they thy servant war, that he his life should reign.

  462. And with reward provided for them that keep the same.

  463. We can turn back to reading the passage we had in Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  464. And we're going to look at verse 10 to verse 13.

  465. Philippians chapter 4, reading again at verse 10.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  466. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  467. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

  468. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content.

  469. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.

  470. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

  471. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  472. I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content.

  473. Beginning of a new year, New Year's Day is always a time of mixed emotions.

  474. There's a sense of newness and excitement, maybe about what lies in store for the year ahead.

  475. It's also a time of sorrow and sadness in many ways.

  476. There may be anxieties looking ahead.

  477. There may be emotions looking back.

  478. We go through so many different emotions at this time of year.

  479. But there's something that's often highlighted for us at this time of year as well.

  480. And it's a people who we often see talking about New Year's resolutions.

  481. When people look at their lives, often it's what is missing or what's wrong in life that they focus on.

  482. And they see a need for change.

  483. I need to take action.

  484. I need to do something.

  485. And so many make resolutions that this coming year is going to be different.

  486. That things are going to change in whatever different kinds of ways.

  487. It's so often the case that January sees a great increase in the number of people joining gyms, taking up memberships in gyms.

  488. And yet by February or March, the numbers are starting to dwindle once again.

  489. Because so often we give these things thought, and yet nothing really changes.

  490. And yet as we go into a new year, yes, there is a need to look at things that need to change.

  491. There's no harm in that if there's things we could do better, if there's things we can change in our own lives.

  492. But above all, it's to look at, well, what is it to be content?

  493. There's a lot of discontent.

  494. There's a lot of anxiety and worry about different things.

  495. But what is it to be content?

  496. Do you know what it is to be content?

  497. Are you feeling content today as you start a new year?

  498. Contentment often makes us think, well, what is contentment?

  499. Where is contentment found?

  500. What is our view of contentment?

  501. Some people speak of contentment, defining it as a state of peaceful happiness.

  502. And yes, there's a sense of contentment in that.

  503. If you're at peace and you're happy, there is a sense of contentment.

  504. But what if you're not?

  505. What if there isn't peace around?

  506. What if you're not feeling full of the joys, as it were, full of happiness?

  507. Does that mean you're not content or cannot be content?

  508. Well, as Paul is writing to the church at Philippi,

  509. Paul himself is here speaking about contentment.

  510. And it's not contentment that's just a sense of peaceful happiness.

  511. That all is well.

  512. Paul is writing from a prison cell.

  513. He's writing in his own old age.

  514. He's writing in the uncertainty that lies ahead of him of what his own life entails.

  515. His uncertainty about his future is a likelihood that he may be put to death very soon.

  516. Is that a peaceful happiness?

  517. He's writing to a people who are being persecuted for their faith,

  518. who are suffering great loss in so many different ways.

  519. Is that a peaceful happiness?

  520. Well, not in the way that the world would define it.

  521. There are many struggles going on.

  522. And the same may be true for ourselves as well.

  523. As we begin a new year, it's not just a sense of a peaceful happiness.

  524. Yes, it's great if it is.

  525. But we can find that there is contentment.

  526. When we see what is behind contentment and where our contentment is truly found and what it really means.

  527. You see, contentment is not just based on peace and happiness.

  528. It is not about having what we want or having everything that we feel we want in this world.

  529. It's about having what we need and seeing what our greatest need is.

  530. And to have that need fulfilled is to know through contentment.

  531. And that's what we find Paul telling us about here.

  532. What this contentment is.

  533. Where it's found.

  534. And what it brings to us.

  535. To experience that true contentment can only be found in rejoicing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  536. In knowing the joy of the Lord as our strength.

  537. This is a wonderful letter by Paul writing with much thanksgiving to the church at Philippi.

  538. To the people at Philippi.

  539. And it's full of joy.

  540. It's full of a sense of rejoicing.

  541. As we read earlier in chapter 4, verse 4.

  542. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  543. Again, I will say rejoice.

  544. It's a wonderful letter full of gospel hope.

  545. The joy of Christ as our strength.

  546. That has Paul's motto for life.

  547. For me to live is Christ.

  548. And to die is gain.

  549. He knows the joy of the Lord.

  550. And that is where his contentment is found.

  551. And that's what he's sharing with the church at Philippi.

  552. Sharing with ourselves today.

  553. The great theologian Augustine once said,

  554. You have made us for yourself, O Lord.

  555. And our heart is restless until it rests in you.

  556. Our heart is restless.

  557. There's a sense of discontent until our hearts rest in Christ.

  558. And then we know what true contentment is.

  559. And so Paul is just showing us some things about this contentment that we can know in Christ here.

  560. And just for a few moments, I want to think about three things that we see regarding this contentment in these verses.

  561. And the first thing we want to think about is the search for contentment.

  562. If Paul is writing here about contentment, that he has learned in whatever situation to be content,

  563. it's a process that he's gone through.

  564. It's something that he's been searching for in his own life.

  565. And something that he knows so many people in Philippi are searching for.

  566. So many people down through all the generations are searching for this sense of contentment.

  567. We see it all around us.

  568. A search for contentment.

  569. People are restless.

  570. People are unsettled.

  571. When we're discontent, there's always something that's agitating us.

  572. Always something that's making us look for something more, something extra.

  573. But the question is, where are we looking?

  574. Where are we looking for our contentment today?

  575. Where are we looking for our contentment as we begin a new year?

  576. There was a pilot once.

  577. He was flying a passenger plane over some mountain range that he was very familiar with.

  578. It's where he'd grown up.

  579. And he was looking down out of the window of the plane this day with his co-pilot beside him.

  580. And he was looking down and he pointed and said,

  581. See that little lake down there?

  582. When I was a young boy, I used to go out there fishing, sitting on a boat, fishing, spending my days on that lake.

  583. And I used to look up into the sky and I'd see the planes passing by overhead.

  584. And he would say, I used to long for being the pilot of one of these planes.

  585. That was my greatest desire.

  586. And he turned to his co-pilot and said,

  587. Now I look down and wish I was in a boat fishing on the lake.

  588. And it's just that kind of life that we live,

  589. where we're always looking beyond and looking for something else.

  590. The search for contentment in his life,

  591. it almost leads us so often to just going round and round in circles.

  592. No direction and no focus.

  593. We're chasing after the end of the rainbow.

  594. We're never going to find it.

  595. It's like the writer to the Ecclesiastes speaks of again and again,

  596. speaking about vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

  597. Living life under the sun is just a chasing after the wind.

  598. This cycle that goes on and on.

  599. Because we're looking in the wrong place.

  600. But as Paul is writing to the church at Philippi here,

  601. he's writing as someone who has experienced this himself.

  602. He's experienced this search for contentment,

  603. seeking, as he was in his own life,

  604. to honor God as he saw it.

  605. And his life has always seemed to have a direction,

  606. but it was a wrong direction.

  607. Until the Lord Jesus took hold of him.

  608. And so here he is writing now a changed man.

  609. And what has changed him is the gospel.

  610. The glory of the Lord Jesus appeared to him,

  611. blinding him and bringing him to know salvation in him

  612. and what true contentment is.

  613. And here he's speaking of this contentment.

  614. He's saying,

  615. I know what it is to be content in whatever situation I am in.

  616. And as he's writing to the church,

  617. to the people at Philippi,

  618. he's writing thanking them for their concern towards him.

  619. But he's also almost defending himself,

  620. saying,

  621. you've been very generous to me.

  622. You've given me a very precious gift,

  623. a very acceptable gift,

  624. as he says in verse 18,

  625. a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

  626. So they've given him out of their own poverty,

  627. as it were,

  628. they've given much to Paul.

  629. But he wants to write back and say,

  630. this is not what's important to me.

  631. What's important to me is not that I've received this gift,

  632. but your willingness to give it.

  633. He's rejoicing in this because,

  634. as he says there in verse 10,

  635. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly,

  636. that you have shown concern for me.

  637. Because what this reminds him of is that they have come to know Christ more and more,

  638. that they are growing in their knowledge of Christ.

  639. They're seeing how precious Christ is compared to anything else in this world,

  640. and they're willing to give out of their little,

  641. they're willing to give to Paul.

  642. They didn't have much themselves,

  643. but what they had they were willing to share.

  644. And so what he's seeing here is the contentment in Christ is not material things.

  645. Contentment in life is not material things.

  646. It's the peace of Christ.

  647. And he speaks about that so much through this letter as well.

  648. The peace of God that passes understanding.

  649. In verse 9 it says,

  650. Practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.

  651. The peace of God is where contentment is found.

  652. And that's what Paul has learned in his own life.

  653. And it's a remarkable life as you look at the life of Paul.

  654. Through all the different challenges he's gone through,

  655. he speaks here of being,

  656. I know how to be brought low,

  657. I know how to abound.

  658. He's been through so many different situations.

  659. I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,

  660. abundance and need.

  661. He knows all these different experiences in his life.

  662. And his search for contentment has brought him down many different paths.

  663. But he's found that contentment is found in the strength

  664. or the one who gives him strength in all of these situations.

  665. Our lack of contentment in this world shows itself in so many different ways.

  666. We see it in such a high rate of debt in our society today

  667. where people feel they need to borrow more and more money

  668. to be satisfied, to get everything that they need in life.

  669. They need more and more money and they end up going into debt

  670. and more misery.

  671. They can't afford to repay the money,

  672. the anxiety and pressure that that brings.

  673. That's not where contentment is found.

  674. Our lack of content is seen,

  675. being content is seen in the demands that people make for their rights.

  676. Now, I don't know if you saw it in the news just this past week.

  677. There's a woman in America

  678. and she's suing a chocolate company,

  679. Hersey Chocolates.

  680. She's suing them for $5 million.

  681. Why?

  682. Because she bought a chocolate

  683. that on the front showed a chocolate that had a face on it.

  684. But when she opened the chocolate,

  685. it looked nothing like it did on the packet.

  686. And she's so offended and upset that she's been misled

  687. that the chocolate inside wasn't what was shown on the package.

  688. So she's suing them for $5 million.

  689. We say it often, the world is going madder all the time.

  690. But people are looking for contentment, fulfillment, satisfaction

  691. in all the wrong ways.

  692. And all we want is never fulfilled.

  693. It's never enough.

  694. And that's what Paul is reminding us here.

  695. As we begin a new year,

  696. what is it that we are searching?

  697. Where are we searching for our contentment?

  698. What is it that we feel is going to make the greatest difference for us

  699. in this year that lies ahead?

  700. Well, the second thing we see here is

  701. the worth of contentment that Paul speaks about.

  702. Has your own view of what it is to be content

  703. changed over the years?

  704. I hope it has.

  705. That as the years go on,

  706. it teaches us what it truly means to be content.

  707. And especially as we think of being a people

  708. who trust in the Lord.

  709. For some, it'll be content with what we have.

  710. For others, it'll be seeking contentment

  711. and maybe not truly knowing what it is.

  712. Well, Paul, as he says here,

  713. as he's speaking of the search for contentment,

  714. he says in verse 11,

  715. I am not speaking of being in need,

  716. for I have learned in whatever situation I am

  717. to be content.

  718. It's something that's been shaping him

  719. throughout his whole life.

  720. And it's something that we should be letting God

  721. shape in our lives too.

  722. Learning what it is to be truly content.

  723. Paul thought he knew what contentment was

  724. in the past.

  725. And what he was doing was seeking

  726. to destroy the Christian church.

  727. He thought he was serving God in that end.

  728. But when the Lord changed his life,

  729. he realized that was worthless.

  730. Worthless comparing to knowing

  731. the surpassing worth of Christ Jesus

  732. as he speaks about in chapter 3.

  733. Nothing else compares

  734. comparing to knowing the Lord Jesus Christ.

  735. The worth of contentment in him

  736. is everything.

  737. And as he's going on in life,

  738. he is learning more and more

  739. about what it is to be content.

  740. And that's something that we all learn too.

  741. That we all need to learn as we go on.

  742. What it is to be content in Christ.

  743. That we can do all things through him

  744. who strengthens us.

  745. Again, that text itself,

  746. it's one of these ones that

  747. is so misrepresented.

  748. It's not just to say we can do anything.

  749. We can do anything through Christ

  750. who strengthens us.

  751. It's facing up to the circumstances

  752. that Paul is speaking about here.

  753. Whether we're in plenty or hunger,

  754. abundance or need.

  755. That's what he's speaking about.

  756. I can face up to these situations.

  757. I can be content in all of these situations

  758. because I know the strength of Christ

  759. with me.

  760. And isn't that a great assurance

  761. and reassurance for ourselves too?

  762. That as we go into a new year,

  763. as we look ahead,

  764. we don't know what lies ahead for us.

  765. None of us do.

  766. We don't know whether it'll be times

  767. of plenty or times of hunger.

  768. We don't know whether it'll be times

  769. of abundance or times of need.

  770. But we can know for sure

  771. that whatever it is,

  772. we can go through them

  773. with the strength of Christ with us.

  774. Paul has learned to be made humble

  775. before the Lord.

  776. And he's shading that with the Philippians here.

  777. He's saying to them,

  778. it doesn't matter what we have,

  779. whether it's status,

  780. whether it's material things,

  781. power, health, wealth.

  782. All of these things can be taken from us.

  783. But God is faithful.

  784. And God is sufficient.

  785. He has learned in every situation.

  786. He's learned in his plenty

  787. as well as his need.

  788. When he writes to the 1st Timothy

  789. in chapter 6,

  790. he's there speaking about

  791. the love of money.

  792. And again,

  793. the love of money is where people

  794. chase after contentment so much

  795. is through money,

  796. through riches.

  797. But he speaks about it

  798. in chapter 6 of 1st Timothy.

  799. In verse 10,

  800. he says,

  801. for the love of money

  802. is a root of all kinds of evil.

  803. It is through this craving

  804. that some have wandered away

  805. from the faith

  806. and pierced themselves

  807. with many pangs.

  808. Again,

  809. it's just this idea

  810. that contentment is found there,

  811. not when it brings you away

  812. from the faith.

  813. In verse 17,

  814. in 1st Timothy 6,

  815. he goes on to say,

  816. as for the rich

  817. in this present age,

  818. charge them not to be haughty,

  819. not to set their hopes

  820. on the uncertainty of riches,

  821. but on God,

  822. who richly provides us

  823. with everything to enjoy.

  824. Again,

  825. it's just a wonderful reminder.

  826. Don't search for contentment

  827. in the riches of this world.

  828. It's uncertainty of these riches,

  829. but on God,

  830. God who richly provides us

  831. with everything to enjoy.

  832. And if we don't see our worth

  833. or the worth of what God

  834. has provided for us,

  835. then we don't see God

  836. as the one who is able

  837. to help us in all our needs.

  838. His provision

  839. is for everything

  840. that we need.

  841. His provision provided for us

  842. through Christ.

  843. And now,

  844. before these verses

  845. in 1st Timothy,

  846. in verse 6 and 7,

  847. Paul says this,

  848. Now there is great gain

  849. in godliness

  850. with contentment.

  851. For we were brought,

  852. we brought nothing

  853. into the world

  854. and we cannot take anything

  855. out of the world.

  856. So everything that he says

  857. about the riches

  858. and the dangers of riches

  859. are based on these words

  860. before it.

  861. There is great gain

  862. in godliness

  863. with contentment.

  864. And that is where

  865. contentment is found.

  866. Godliness

  867. with contentment.

  868. Faith

  869. in our Lord Jesus Christ

  870. to be with us

  871. and to go before us.

  872. And so the question is,

  873. as we go into a new year,

  874. where is our worth

  875. and our value found?

  876. Where is

  877. our true contentment found?

  878. John Newton,

  879. he wrote these words,

  880. and I think they're great words

  881. even as we think of

  882. going into a new year.

  883. May the grace of Christ

  884. our Savior

  885. and the Father's

  886. boundless love

  887. with the Holy Spirit's favor

  888. rest upon us

  889. from above.

  890. Thus may we abide

  891. in union

  892. with each other

  893. and the Lord

  894. and possess

  895. in sweet communion

  896. joys which earth

  897. cannot afford.

  898. Wonderful words,

  899. just to think of where

  900. our contentment

  901. is found.

  902. may we enjoy

  903. and possess

  904. in sweet communion

  905. joys

  906. which earth

  907. cannot afford.

  908. To know

  909. that contentment

  910. in Christ,

  911. godliness

  912. with contentment

  913. is great gain.

  914. That is where

  915. we are to look

  916. for our contentment.

  917. And that's where

  918. we just want to finally

  919. just focus on

  920. for a few moments.

  921. that source

  922. of contentment.

  923. I can do all

  924. things

  925. not by myself,

  926. not with the help

  927. of others.

  928. I can do all

  929. things

  930. through him

  931. who strengthens

  932. me.

  933. Paul is not

  934. Superman.

  935. Paul is not

  936. some kind of

  937. hero who can

  938. face up to

  939. any situation

  940. through his own

  941. strength,

  942. but through

  943. the joy

  944. of the Lord

  945. as his strength.

  946. Through the strength

  947. that he gives

  948. through Christ

  949. to his people.

  950. Through him

  951. who gives

  952. me strength.

  953. Paul begins

  954. this section

  955. with a sense

  956. of rejoicing

  957. in verse 10.

  958. I rejoiced

  959. in the Lord

  960. greatly

  961. that they

  962. had provided

  963. for him.

  964. And in verse 13

  965. there's this sense

  966. of joy as well.

  967. Joy in that

  968. I can do all

  969. things

  970. through him

  971. who strengthens

  972. me.

  973. Joy that he

  974. is sharing

  975. with the people

  976. at Philippi

  977. who are giving

  978. out of their

  979. poverty.

  980. They're giving

  981. to him.

  982. He mentions

  983. in verse 16

  984. that even

  985. in Thessalonica

  986. you sent me

  987. help for my

  988. needs once

  989. and again.

  990. Why make

  991. that point?

  992. Because

  993. Thessalonica

  994. is a rich

  995. place,

  996. a place

  997. of plenty,

  998. and yet

  999. the Philippians

  1000. they were

  1001. sending even

  1002. there to

  1003. help him.

  1004. So there

  1005. is this joy

  1006. in serving

  1007. the Lord,

  1008. joy in

  1009. knowing the

  1010. strength

  1011. that he

  1012. gives.

  1013. So whether

  1014. it's a year

  1015. of plenty

  1016. or poverty,

  1017. whether we're

  1018. well fed

  1019. or hungry,

  1020. whatever lies

  1021. ahead for us,

  1022. our contentment,

  1023. our peace,

  1024. our strength

  1025. is found

  1026. in Christ.

  1027. And that is

  1028. what we want

  1029. to know

  1030. for ourselves

  1031. surely

  1032. as we

  1033. go forward.

  1034. To go

  1035. forward

  1036. in his

  1037. strength.

  1038. To go

  1039. forward

  1040. knowing

  1041. his

  1042. peace

  1043. and his

  1044. presence.

  1045. That

  1046. verse,

  1047. verse 13,

  1048. I can do

  1049. all things

  1050. through him

  1051. who strengthens

  1052. me.

  1053. There's two

  1054. dangers for

  1055. us in

  1056. these verses,

  1057. in this

  1058. verse.

  1059. One is to

  1060. say the

  1061. focus is on

  1062. us.

  1063. I can do

  1064. all things.

  1065. We don't

  1066. lean one

  1067. way in

  1068. that sense.

  1069. But there's

  1070. a second

  1071. danger and

  1072. it says

  1073. through him

  1074. who strengthens

  1075. me.

  1076. Where we

  1077. just wait

  1078. as it were.

  1079. Wait for

  1080. the Lord.

  1081. The two

  1082. go hand

  1083. in hand.

  1084. I can do

  1085. all things.

  1086. I can go

  1087. through all

  1088. of these

  1089. things through

  1090. him who

  1091. strengthens

  1092. me.

  1093. Just like

  1094. we had

  1095. on the

  1096. notice sheet

  1097. yesterday on

  1098. the back

  1099. of it,

  1100. that poem

  1101. by

  1102. Minnie

  1103. Harkins.

  1104. I said

  1105. to the

  1106. man who

  1107. stood at

  1108. the gate

  1109. of the

  1110. year,

  1111. give me

  1112. a light

  1113. that I

  1114. may

  1115. tread

  1116. safely

  1117. into

  1118. the

  1119. unknown.

  1120. And he

  1121. replied,

  1122. go out

  1123. into the

  1124. darkness

  1125. and put

  1126. your

  1127. hand

  1128. into

  1129. the

  1130. hand

  1131. of

  1132. God.

  1133. That

  1134. shall

  1135. be

  1136. to

  1137. you

  1138. better

  1139. than

  1140. light

  1141. and

  1142. safer

  1143. than

  1144. a

  1145. known

  1146. way.

  1147. So I

  1148. went

  1149. forth

  1150. and finding

  1151. the

  1152. hand of

  1153. God

  1154. throgged

  1155. gladly

  1156. into

  1157. the

  1158. night

  1159. and

  1160. he

  1161. led

  1162. me

  1163. towards

  1164. the

  1165. hills

  1166. and the

  1167. breaking

  1168. of the

  1169. day

  1170. in the

  1171. lone

  1172. east,

  1173. going

  1174. hand

  1175. in

  1176. hand

  1177. with

  1178. God

  1179. trusting

  1180. ourselves

  1181. to

  1182. him.

  1183. May

  1184. this

  1185. be a

  1186. year

  1187. when we

  1188. go on

  1189. learning

  1190. more of

  1191. what it

  1192. is to

  1193. be content,

  1194. learning

  1195. more of

  1196. what it

  1197. is to

  1198. know the

  1199. strength

  1200. of the

  1201. Lord

  1202. through

  1203. all our

  1204. different

  1205. ways of

  1206. life,

  1207. whatever it

  1208. entails,

  1209. through

  1210. plenty or

  1211. hunger,

  1212. through

  1213. abundance

  1214. need,

  1215. that we

  1216. will go

  1217. forward

  1218. in his

  1219. strength.

  1220. He is the

  1221. sovereign one

  1222. to whom I

  1223. must submit.

  1224. He is the

  1225. saviour

  1226. whom I

  1227. must serve.

  1228. He is the

  1229. sufficient one

  1230. whom I

  1231. must trust.

  1232. That's how

  1233. somebody

  1234. once put it.

  1235. And if we

  1236. know all

  1237. of these

  1238. things,

  1239. we will

  1240. know

  1241. godliness

  1242. with

  1243. contentment,

  1244. which is

  1245. great gain.

  1246. So may

  1247. we go

  1248. forward

  1249. with these

  1250. words to

  1251. ourselves.

  1252. I can

  1253. do all

  1254. things

  1255. through

  1256. him

  1257. who

  1258. strengthens

  1259. me.

  1260. Let us

  1261. pray.

  1262. Our

  1263. Father in

  1264. heaven,

  1265. we thank

  1266. you for

  1267. every

  1268. circumstance,

  1269. for every

  1270. situation

  1271. that we

  1272. find

  1273. ourselves

  1274. facing up

  1275. to,

  1276. that we

  1277. have you

  1278. on our

  1279. side,

  1280. that we

  1281. have you

  1282. as the

  1283. one who

  1284. is able

  1285. to make

  1286. us content,

  1287. the one

  1288. who is able

  1289. to give

  1290. us strength

  1291. to go

  1292. through all

  1293. that we

  1294. face up

  1295. to,

  1296. whether it

  1297. is time

  1298. of plenty

  1299. or time

  1300. of hunger,

  1301. time of

  1302. abundance

  1303. or time

  1304. of need.

  1305. May we

  1306. know the

  1307. strength of

  1308. the Lord

  1309. as our

  1310. help in

  1311. all the

  1312. days that

  1313. lie ahead.

  1314. May you

  1315. bless us,

  1316. Lord,

  1317. and give

  1318. us your

  1319. contentment,

  1320. your peace

  1321. that passes

  1322. all understanding

  1323. that we

  1324. will be able

  1325. to lean

  1326. upon and

  1327. rest on

  1328. you for

  1329. all of

  1330. these things.

  1331. Continue

  1332. with us,

  1333. we pray,

  1334. throughout

  1335. this day

  1336. and in

  1337. all the

  1338. days ahead,

  1339. Lord,

  1340. as we

  1341. seek your

  1342. will and

  1343. seek your

  1344. blessing on

  1345. us.

  1346. We ask,

  1347. O Lord,

  1348. that you

  1349. would go

  1350. before us,

  1351. guiding our

  1352. steps,

  1353. our thoughts,

  1354. and all our

  1355. actions to

  1356. be for your

  1357. glory and

  1358. for the

  1359. greater good

  1360. of all

  1361. around us,

  1362. that your

  1363. light would

  1364. shine upon

  1365. us,

  1366. that your

  1367. truth be

  1368. known.

  1369. So hear our

  1370. prayers and

  1371. pardon our

  1372. sins as we

  1373. ask it all in

  1374. Jesus' name.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. We're going to

  1377. conclude by

  1378. singing to

  1379. God's praise

  1380. in Psalm 65

  1381. and the

  1382. Sing Psalms

  1383. version,

  1384. page 82

  1385. of the

  1386. psalm book.

  1387. Psalm 65

  1388. page 82

  1389. will sing from

  1390. verse 9 down

  1391. to the end

  1392. of the

  1393. psalm.

  1394. psalm.

  1395. It's a

  1396. psalm of

  1397. praise to

  1398. God as

  1399. the psalm

  1400. begins,

  1401. and

  1402. Sion

  1403. praise

  1404. awaits

  1405. you,

  1406. Lord,

  1407. to you

  1408. our

  1409. vows

  1410. will

  1411. pay.

  1412. But then

  1413. towards the

  1414. end of

  1415. the psalm,

  1416. verse 9

  1417. to 13,

  1418. it reminds

  1419. us that

  1420. everything

  1421. that we

  1422. have is

  1423. from the

  1424. hand of

  1425. God.

  1426. And verse

  1427. 11 especially

  1428. speaks about

  1429. our situation

  1430. today.

  1431. You crown

  1432. the year

  1433. with

  1434. fruitfulness,

  1435. your

  1436. harvests

  1437. overflow,

  1438. the

  1439. grassland

  1440. flourishes

  1441. again,

  1442. the hills

  1443. with

  1444. gladness

  1445. glow.

  1446. That's our

  1447. prayer as we

  1448. go on to

  1449. a new

  1450. year that

  1451. the Lord

  1452. would crown

  1453. the year

  1454. with his

  1455. fruitfulness

  1456. and everything,

  1457. not just

  1458. the abundance

  1459. of the

  1460. grassland

  1461. flourishing,

  1462. but as we

  1463. think of

  1464. the harvest

  1465. that we

  1466. see before

  1467. us in

  1468. our day

  1469. and our

  1470. age,

  1471. a people

  1472. in need

  1473. of Christ,

  1474. the Lord

  1475. would crown

  1476. his year

  1477. with a

  1478. fruitful

  1479. harvest of

  1480. those who

  1481. would praise

  1482. the Lord.

  1483. We'll sing

  1484. from verse

  1485. 9 to

  1486. 13,

  1487. the tune

  1488. is Glasgow

  1489. and we

  1490. stand to

  1491. sing.

  1492. Amen.

  1493. Amen.

  1494. Amen.

  1495. Amen.

  1496. Amen.

  1497. Amen.

  1498. Amen.

  1499. Amen.

  1500. Amen.

  1501. Amen.

  1502. Amen.

  1503. Amen.

  1504. Amen.

  1505. Amen.

  1506. Amen.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. Amen.

  1510. Amen.

  1511. Amen.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.

  1514. Amen.

  1515. Amen.

1516. As you ordained, your streams are full to get the people's bread.

1517. You page the parables of the land, you level of the ground.

1518. You soften it with showers of rain, and make its crops a land.

1519. You've done the year with fruitfulness, your harvest overflow.

1520. The grass that flourishes again, the hills with gladness flow.

1521. The pastures green with lots are clothed, the meadows covering.

1522. The valleys, they themselves with corn, they shout for joy and sing.

1523. After the benediction, I'll go to the main door.

  1524. We'll close with a benediction.

1525. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit

1526. rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  1527. Amen.
