  1. Well, we begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise from Psalm 1a, the

  2. Sing Psalms version, Psalm 1a, page 1 of the Psalm books.

  3. We're going to sing the whole of this, Psalm verse 1 to verse 6.

  4. Blessed is the one who turns away from where the wicked walk, who does not stand in sinners

  5. paths or sit with those who mock.

  6. We'll sing from verse 1, the whole of the Psalm, to God's praise.

  7. Blessed is the one who turns away from where the wicked walk, who does not stand in sinners

  8. paths or sit with those who mock.

  9. Instead, he finds the story of His joy and great delight.

  10. He makes the precepts of the Lord this sunny day and night.

  11. He prospers ever like a tree that's planted by a stream.

  12. And in due season heals this fruit, this peace I always bring.

  13. Not so the wicked day are like the child that's born away.

  14. They will not stand when judgment comes or with the righteous day.

  15. It is the Lord who sees and knows the way the righteous go.

  16. But those who live and need the life the Lord will overthrow.

  17. Let's bow our heads now in a word of prayer.

  18. Let us pray.

  19. Lord, our gracious God, as we continue to worship you this day, as we give thanks for your own

  20. day, the Lord's day, as we gather as a people, not just here, but to all ends of the earth,

  21. we thank you that your name is praised from the rising to the setting of the sun, that in

  22. many different nations and among many different people, in many different languages, your name

  23. is praised and your word is heard.

  24. And we thank you that your word is that constant companion to your people, that in whatever language

  25. it is heard and read, we thank you for its power.

  26. We thank you for its strength to build up your people in any and every circumstance.

  27. And we thank you for the reminder in what we have sung together there from the psalm, that

  28. your people are blessed who turn not away from it.

  29. We thank you, Lord, that you are the one who builds your people up, who makes them to flourish.

  30. In the midst of everything that this world may throw at us, we thank you that faith is rooted

  31. not in ourselves or the things of this world, but in you as our God, the one who is immovable

  32. and unchangeable, the one same yesterday, today and forever.

  33. And we thank you that as we come together anew this evening, that we have your word before

  34. us and that longing and desire to hear it and to grow by it.

  35. And we pray that every one of us here tonight will hear your word speaking to us, that whatever

  36. else in the busyness of life we are hearing, the many different voices that clamor for our

  37. attention and our thoughts, we thank you that your voice is powerful and that even when

  38. we are deaf to it, even when we have no interest in it, that you have power by your Spirit to

  39. open our ears to hear and to open our hearts to receive.

  40. And we ask that as we join together and as we pray together, even just now, that you will

  41. prepare our hearts, that you will prepare us in heart, mind and soul to meet with you and

  42. to hear you and to know the great concern and compassion that you have towards us as your

  43. people.

  44. Yes, we may have strayed as so many do.

  45. Yes, may we have wandered off and gone our own ways.

  46. But we thank you that the word tells us of the great shepherd, the one you sent into this

  47. world to shepherd your people, to gather your people, to bring them to yourself.

  48. And we thank you that our great shepherd is the one who calls us, even this evening, who

  49. calls us by name to come out and to follow him.

  50. And we thank you that we have such a precious Savior.

  51. The one who shepherds us is none other than your Son, Christ Jesus.

  52. And we thank you that you saw our great need.

  53. You saw our great lostness, how far away we had wandered, that you saw the great need to

  54. send your Son as the only way to salvation, the only way to save your people from their

  55. sins.

  56. And we thank you that as your truth reminds us that a great price was paid for our sin,

  57. the price that we could never pay ourselves.

  58. Lord, we thank you that Jesus, in going to the cross, in bearing its shame, in all that

  59. it entailed, the mocking, the cursing, the darkness, the pain, the sorrow of it, we thank

  60. you that he bore our sins there.

  61. And we thank you that we are reminded today that as he died, yes, he rose again.

  62. And he is at your right hand even now.

  63. And so we pray, Lord, that you will help us to be assured in that and confident in it,

  64. that whatever security this world might offer us, that we would see it's nothing but temporary,

  65. that the security we have in Christ is eternal and will last forever, never perishing.

  66. So bless us together this evening.

  67. Bless all our homes and our families represented here.

  68. We thank you for all that we see before us and pray that you will bless us, Lord.

  69. We thank you for all who tune in online as well.

  70. And we pray blessing to them as well, wherever they gather.

  71. We pray, Lord, that you will use your word to each and every one of us, that powerful word.

  72. We pray that it will help us to know your great love and compassion that's unchanging,

  73. to know the challenge it gives to us as well, to convict and to convert us.

  74. When we lie in sin, Lord, we know that we are dead.

  75. But we thank you for the life that it is in Christ, the life that he gives.

  76. And so we pray that together as a people from youngest to oldest,

  77. in our homes and our families and our community,

  78. that your spirit will be working to bring life, to bring newness, to bring renewal for us,

  79. even at the beginning of a new year, Lord.

  80. We pray that as we go on in the seasons of this year,

  81. as we see the darkness turning to light in the days and months ahead,

  82. as we see the bare ground bearing its seed once again and giving growth,

  83. we pray, Lord, that not just in these natural ways around us,

  84. but also in a spiritual way that we would see progression in every way for your church this year,

  85. to bring people from darkness to light, to see new growth and new life,

  86. to see days of salvation, days of rejoicing in your goodness to us.

  87. We pray that it will be true for ourselves as a people here

  88. and that as we endeavor and go on in your strength and prayerfully

  89. to reach out with the gospel to all around us,

  90. we pray that you will direct our paths and give us a vision for it,

  91. give us encouragement in it.

  92. We thank you for all the ongoing work and work that resumes again,

  93. and even in this coming week,

  94. for our young people with the toddler group and the explorers resuming in this coming week.

  95. We pray for our young people.

  96. We pray for them, not just in preschool and in primary school,

  97. but up through high school and even into late teens and early adulthood.

  98. We pray for your spirit to move among them, Lord,

  99. for people to show an interest in them,

  100. for us as a people, as your people,

  101. to show an interest in all the lives that we see around us,

  102. not just to criticize or to condemn,

  103. but to encourage and to show them the love of Christ,

  104. to show them a better way,

  105. to show them your paths and your ways.

  106. And we pray, Lord, that you will give us

  107. prayerful insight into how to reach out to them,

  108. how to show them a different life,

  109. a different way.

  110. We pray, Lord, that you will give us wisdom and help.

  111. We pray that for every endeavor that we have to reach out with the gospel.

  112. We thank you for Friday,

  113. the free and the many connections that have been made there

  114. and relationships being built up.

  115. And we pray that you'll continue to bless every meeting of it in this coming year,

  116. that we will see familiar faces coming through our doors again,

  117. but also new faces coming in as well,

  118. and people we can relate with and show love to and compassion to.

  119. We pray for the 55 plus group as well as they continue to meet.

  120. We thank you for every encouragement in this past year

  121. as it's resumed once again.

  122. And we pray, Lord, to continue to bless every meeting of it,

  123. to encourage that fellowship with one another,

  124. meeting up in an informal way and yet a constructive way as well,

  125. and offering praise and worship to you.

  126. So we pray, Lord, and thank you for all who help in all these endeavors.

  127. And we pray that you will build us up as a people here,

  128. that we will first and foremost be a praying people wherever we are,

  129. and that we will be a willing people,

  130. that you will make us willing and use us, Lord, for your glory.

  131. Remember us in our particular needs as well as a people,

  132. those who are unwell, those who are mourning,

  133. those who are going through difficult periods in life,

  134. just now, Lord.

  135. We continue to pray for and uphold them in our prayers.

  136. And we ask, Lord, that in all our different needs,

  137. that you will surround us with your strength and with your grace.

  138. We do pray for James and Donna and continue to commit them to you.

  139. We pray, Lord, that the way ahead for Donna will be clearer and smoother in these days ahead,

  140. that the infection would clear,

  141. and that it would be able to give further treatment and surgery to her as required.

  142. Uphold her and be her strength at this time.

  143. And to James as well and all the family as we commit them to you.

  144. And others too, Lord, in our belonging to us as a congregation,

  145. we pray help and comfort and your grace towards those who need you.

  146. And particularly in times of mourning just now and in funerals even to take place in this coming week,

  147. we pray for your word to be blessed and your spirit to be present,

  148. to comfort, to uphold.

  149. So we ask all these things looking to you.

  150. We thank you that you are the one we can call upon,

  151. that you are near to your people,

  152. that you hear us in our prayers,

  153. and that you are the one we look to do abundantly more than we ask or imagine.

  154. We pray that you will continue then to build your church up near and far,

  155. to bless all your people, your praying people,

  156. to bless those who rule over our nation and the many nations of this world.

  157. We pray, Lord, to see days of peace,

  158. days of your goodness and mercy towards us.

  159. We ask all these things,

  160. confessing our own sin,

  161. how far short we fall on a daily basis.

  162. And yet we thank you,

  163. even as we will read in a moment,

  164. of how you are able to cast our sins away.

  165. And we thank you for that,

  166. for the great salvation and the great God that you are,

  167. that no God compares to you.

  168. So hear us in our prayers and continue with us now,

  169. pardoning us and cleansing us from all sin.

  170. In Jesus' name.

  171. Amen.

  172. Amen.

  173. We're going to sing together again Psalm 103 in the Scottish Psalter Version.

  174. Psalm 103, page 369.

  175. And we'll sing from verse 8 down to verse 13.

  176. Psalm 103 at verse 8.

  177. Verse 12 says,

  178. So far as east is distant from the west,

  179. so far as he from us removed in his love all our iniquity.

  180. So we'll sing from verse 8 down to verse 13 to God's praise.

  181. The Lord our God is merciful,

  182. and he is gracious.

  183. He will not try continually,

  184. nor keep his anger still.

  185. With us he dealt,

  186. nor does he sin,

  187. nor did he quite adieu.

  188. For us the heaven in his sight,

  189. we are survived.

  190. So great to know that you in here,

  191. His tender mercies are.

  192. As far as east is distant from the west,

  193. so far hath he,

  194. from us removed in his love all our iniquity.

  195. Such pity as the Father hath

  196. and to his children dear.

  197. Like pity shows the Lord to such

  198. as worship him in fear.

  199. We'll turn together to read in the Old Testament

  200. in the book of Micah.

  201. We're going to read in chapter 7.

  202. Micah chapter 7.

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  203. Find this around page 943 of the church Bibles.

  204. Micah chapter 7.

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  205. Last Sunday morning it was,

  206. we were looking at Micah chapter 6

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  207. and seeing the kind of judgment

  208. that Micah was showing to the people

  209. and how the Lord was speaking to the people.

  210. In verse 3 of chapter 6 it says,

  211. O my people, what have I done to you?

  212. How have I wearied you?

  213. Answer me.

  214. The Lord calling to his people

  215. and then showing the great things

  216. that he has done for them

  217. and seeking that they would return

  218. and walk humbly with the Lord.

  219. So we're going to continue on from that

  220. into chapter 7.

  221. Reading the whole of this chapter.

  222. Woe is me, for I have become

  223. as when the summer fruit has been gathered,

  224. as when the grapes have been gleaned.

  225. There is no cluster to eat,

  226. no first ripe fig that my soul desires.

  227. The godly has perished from the earth

  228. and there is no one upright among mankind.

  229. They all lie in wait for blood

  230. and each hunts the other with a net.

  231. Their hands are on what is evil to do it well.

  232. The prince and the judge ask for a bribe

  233. and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul.

  234. Thus they weave it together.

  235. The best of them is like a briar,

  236. the most upright of them,

  237. a thorn hedge.

  238. The day of your watchmen,

  239. of your punishment has come.

  240. Now their confusion is at hand.

  241. Put no trust in a neighbour,

  242. have no confidence in a friend.

  243. Guard the doors of your mouth

  244. from her who lies in your arms.

  245. For the son treats the father with contempt.

  246. The daughter rises up against her mother,

  247. the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

  248. A man's enemies are the men of his own house.

  249. But as for me,

  250. I will look to the Lord.

  251. I will wait for the God of my salvation.

  252. My God will hear me.

  253. Rejoice not over me, O my enemy.

  254. When I fall, I shall rise.

  255. When I sit in darkness,

  256. the Lord will be a light to me.

  257. I will bear the indignation of the Lord

  258. because I have sinned against him.

  259. Until he pleads my cause

  260. and executes judgment for me.

  261. He will bring me out to the light.

  262. I shall look upon his vindication.

  263. Then my enemy will see

  264. and shame will cover her who said to me,

  265. Where is the Lord your God?

  266. My eyes will look upon her.

  267. Now she will be trampled down

  268. like the mire of the streets.

  269. A day for the building of your walls.

  270. In that day,

  271. the boundary shall be far extended.

  272. In that day,

  273. they will come to you

  274. from Assyria and the cities of Egypt

  275. and from Egypt to the river,

  276. from sea to sea

  277. and from mountain to mountain.

  278. But the earth shall be desolate

  279. because of its inhabitants

  280. for the fruit of their deeds.

  281. Shepherd your people

  282. with your staff,

  283. the flock of your inheritance

  284. who dwell alone in a forest,

  285. in the midst of a garden land,

  286. let them graze in Bashan and Gilead

  287. as in the days of old,

  288. as in the days when you came out

  289. of the land of Egypt.

  290. I will show them marvelous things.

  291. The nations shall see

  292. and be ashamed of all their might.

  293. They shall lay their hands on their mouths.

  294. Their ears shall be deaf.

  295. They shall lick the dust like a serpent,

  296. like the crawling things of the earth.

  297. They shall come trembling

  298. out of their strongholds.

  299. They shall turn in dread

  300. to the Lord our God,

  301. and they shall be in fear of you.

  302. Who is a God like you,

  303. pardoning iniquity

  304. and passing over transgression

  305. for the remnant of his inheritance?

  306. He does not retain his anger forever

  307. because he delights in steadfast love.

  308. He will again have compassion on us.

  309. He will tread our iniquities under feet.

  310. You will cast all our sins

  311. into the depths of the sea.

  312. You will show faithfulness to Jacob

  313. and steadfast love to Abraham

  314. as you have sworn to our fathers

  315. from the days of old.

  316. Amen.

  317. And may God bless that reading

  318. from his word.

  319. Before we turn back

  320. to look at this passage,

  321. we'll sing again in Psalm 135

  322. in the Scottish Psalter,

  323. page 426 of the Psalm book.

  324. Psalm 135.

  325. We sing from verse 15

  326. down to the end of the Psalm.

  327. Psalm 135 at verse 15.

  328. Psalm that speaks of the idols

  329. of the nations made of silver

  330. and of gold.

  331. The idols of the nations

  332. of silver and iron gold.

  333. And by the hands of men

  334. is made their fashion and mold.

  335. Mouths they have,

  336. but they do not speak.

  337. Eyes, but they do not see.

  338. Ears have they,

  339. but hear not.

  340. And in their mouths

  341. no breathing be.

  342. We'll sing from verse 15

  343. down to the end of the Psalm

  344. to God's praise.

  345. Amen.

  346. The idols of the nations

  347. of silver and gold.

  348. And by the hands of men

  349. is made their passion and mold.

  350. Mouths have they,

  351. but they do not see.

  352. Eyes, but they do not see.

  353. Ears have they,

  354. but hear not.

  355. O Israel's house,

  356. O Israel's house,

  357. bless God,

  358. and bless God,

  359. O Israel's family.

  360. O bless the Lord of the vices,

  361. ye who his servants are.

  362. And bless the holy name of God,

  363. all ye the Lord that fear.

  364. And blessed be the Lord our God,

  365. from Zion's holy hill,

  366. who dwelleth at Jerusalem,

  367. the Lord, O praise ye still.

  368. Well, we can turn back together

  369. for a time to Micah chapter 7.

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  370. I'll read again at verse 18.

  371. We're going to look really

  372. from verse 13 down to the end,

  373. but we can read again at verse 18.

  374. Who is a God like you,

  375. pardoning iniquity

  376. and passing over transgression

  377. for the remnant of his inheritance?

  378. Really that question

  379. that we're thinking about this evening,

  380. who is a God like you?

  381. What God compares to you?

  382. I'm sure we're all familiar

  383. with making comparisons

  384. with different things.

  385. We live in a world

  386. where we often compare

  387. and contrast things,

  388. things that we enjoy,

  389. maybe others don't,

  390. and we speak about them.

  391. We compare cars,

  392. we compare athletes,

  393. we compare holiday destinations,

  394. we compare food.

  395. We speak about all these things together,

  396. and we all have our opinions

  397. as to maybe what is better,

  398. what is worse.

  399. But one thing that we maybe

  400. are familiar with comparing,

  401. and it's always being thrown

  402. in front of us through adverts,

  403. especially on television,

  404. is comparing insurance.

  405. There's a constant barrage

  406. of adverts telling us

  407. to compare the market

  408. or to go and compare,

  409. to find the best deal

  410. when it comes to insurance.

  411. I'm sure many of you

  412. have used these things,

  413. but what do you look for

  414. when you use these kind of places?

  415. Do you look at just the price,

  416. and are you looking just

  417. for the cheapest deal,

  418. or do you look at the details

  419. behind the policy?

  420. Do you look at actually

  421. what's contained in your policy

  422. that you might be buying,

  423. and see, really, is it?

  424. Are you getting value for money?

  425. It may be cheap,

  426. but us, we often hear,

  427. buy cheap, pay dear,

  428. is what we're often told.

  429. But what about when it comes

  430. comparing God in this world,

  431. comparing salvation in this world?

  432. Where are we looking

  433. for that insurance?

  434. Where are we looking

  435. for that guarantee?

  436. Are we looking for just

  437. the cheapest option

  438. available to us,

  439. the easiest option

  440. available to us,

  441. or are we looking at

  442. the fine detail

  443. of what's involved?

  444. Are we looking at

  445. the details behind everything

  446. that life entails

  447. and what eternity entails?

  448. When we look at life

  449. as it's offered to us

  450. in this world,

  451. it's so often just,

  452. go on and do your own thing.

  453. Live your life to the full.

  454. Don't concern yourself

  455. with God or eternity

  456. or anything that the Bible says.

  457. And yet, when you look

  458. at the Bible

  459. and what the Bible says,

  460. it gives a very different picture.

  461. It gives every instruction

  462. that we need for life

  463. and also the seriousness

  464. of eternity

  465. and what insurance

  466. we need for that.

  467. And that's what's behind

  468. this question

  469. in verse 18.

  470. Who is a God like you?

  471. What in this world

  472. compares to having you

  473. as God?

  474. Because the people here

  475. in Micah's day,

  476. as you see as you read through

  477. the book of Micah

  478. and also the book of Isaiah

  479. written about the same time

  480. as well,

  481. is that the people

  482. in these days

  483. were turning away

  484. from their God,

  485. the God of Israel,

  486. the God of these people,

  487. the God who had,

  488. as we see in chapter 6,

  489. led them through Egypt

  490. out of slavery

  491. and bondage there

  492. who had brought them

  493. to the promised land.

  494. They were turning away

  495. from this God.

  496. They weren't seeing him

  497. as the one

  498. who was able

  499. to give them

  500. a full life.

  501. And there were other idols,

  502. other gods

  503. that were tempting them away.

  504. A way that in many ways

  505. maybe seemed easier.

  506. A way that didn't entail

  507. much suffering.

  508. A way that entailed

  509. maybe short-term gain.

  510. And yet a way that entailed

  511. eternal loss.

  512. And that's the seriousness

  513. of why God sent prophets

  514. such as Isaiah,

  515. such as Micah,

  516. and others

  517. as we read of

  518. in the Old Testament

  519. to see that the people

  520. of God

  521. who were turning away

  522. from this insurance

  523. and this guarantee

  524. and looking at

  525. the cheap alternatives,

  526. they were perishing

  527. and being lost.

  528. And God sent them

  529. to call them

  530. back to himself.

  531. So the book of Micah

  532. is one that's full

  533. of warning

  534. to the people

  535. and it's full of warning

  536. to ourselves as well.

  537. It's a book

  538. that speaks of judgment

  539. that will come.

  540. Judgment as we saw

  541. the last time

  542. as we were looking

  543. at chapter 6.

  544. Judgment for not

  545. listening to God.

  546. For turning away from him.

  547. For not trusting him

  548. as a guarantee

  549. for salvation.

  550. in that question

  551. that God was asking

  552. of the people

  553. in verse 3

  554. of chapter 6.

  555. God is challenging

  556. the people there.

  557. He's challenging them.

  558. Where is your security?

  559. Where is your insurance?

  560. Oh my people,

  561. what have I done to you?

  562. Have I wearied?

  563. Answer me.

  564. What have I done

  565. that you have turned away from me?

  566. Is it too much

  567. for you to follow me?

  568. And he went on

  569. to explain

  570. what he had done for them

  571. in verse 4.

  572. For I brought you up

  573. from the land of Egypt.

  574. I redeemed you

  575. from the house of slavery.

  576. I sent before you

  577. Moses and Aaron

  578. and Miriam.

  579. What God

  580. compares to this?

  581. Is there any God

  582. that they could look to

  583. around them

  584. that compares

  585. to this God

  586. and the miracles

  587. that he had done

  588. to lead them

  589. out of Egypt

  590. through the Red Sea,

  591. through the wilderness?

  592. Show me,

  593. he's saying,

  594. a God

  595. that compares

  596. to this.

  597. And Micah,

  598. as he comes

  599. to the end

  600. of this book,

  601. is saying,

  602. who is a God

  603. like you?

  604. Saying to the people

  605. then and saying

  606. to ourselves today,

  607. who is a God

  608. like you?

  609. There are consequences,

  610. as we see in Micah,

  611. for not listening

  612. to what God

  613. is saying to us.

  614. But then we ask

  615. ourselves,

  616. what are the benefits

  617. then

  618. to listening

  619. to what God

  620. is saying to us?

  621. And as you come

  622. into chapter 7,

  623. as you read through

  624. the book of Micah,

  625. what you see is,

  626. yes,

  627. there's much judgment

  628. in this book.

  629. But as it comes

  630. to a conclusion,

  631. it's reminding us

  632. of the wonderful love

  633. of God.

  634. Verse 18

  635. to verse 20

  636. there really

  637. highlights for us

  638. who is a God

  639. like you?

  640. Who is a God

  641. that can pardon

  642. our iniquities?

  643. Who is a God

  644. that does not

  645. retain anger

  646. forever?

  647. Who delights

  648. in steadfast love?

  649. Who will have

  650. compassion on us?

  651. Who threads

  652. our iniquities

  653. underfoot?

  654. Who will cast

  655. our sins

  656. into the depths

  657. of the sea?

  658. All of these things

  659. that you see

  660. in these verses,

  661. have you found

  662. another God

  663. in this world,

  664. in this life,

  665. who compares

  666. to the God

  667. of the Bible?

  668. The God

  669. of steadfast love,

  670. the God

  671. who forgives sin,

  672. the God

  673. who offers life

  674. and life eternal.

  675. Have you found

  676. another God

  677. that compares

  678. to this?

  679. You haven't

  680. and you won't

  681. because there is

  682. no God

  683. like this God.

  684. God.

  685. And when you look

  686. at Micah himself,

  687. his name

  688. actually means

  689. who is

  690. like you

  691. as Lord.

  692. That is the root

  693. of Micah's name.

  694. Who is like

  695. the Lord?

  696. And this is the prophet

  697. that God sent.

  698. And when we listen

  699. to God,

  700. when we begin

  701. to see

  702. that no God

  703. compares

  704. to this God,

  705. then we realize,

  706. truly realize,

  707. the steadfast love

  708. and the security

  709. that this God

  710. offers

  711. to his people.

  712. Psalm 34,

  713. it says to us,

  714. O taste

  715. and see

  716. that the Lord

  717. is good.

  718. Blessed

  719. is the one

  720. who takes

  721. refuge in him.

  722. We sang

  723. in Psalm 1

  724. that man

  725. that man

  726. hath perfect

  727. blessedness

  728. who walketh

  729. not astray.

  730. The blessing

  731. of knowing

  732. God.

  733. The joy

  734. of knowing

  735. that security

  736. of his steadfast love

  737. and the salvation

  738. that he offers

  739. to us.

  740. But are we looking

  741. to him?

  742. Or are we looking

  743. and comparing

  744. and looking

  745. for a cheaper

  746. alternative?

  747. We're surrounded

  748. by idols

  749. and false

  750. gods

  751. ourselves.

  752. What the world

  753. tells us

  754. we need

  755. success

  756. and money

  757. and status

  758. power.

  759. We're surrounded

  760. by all of these

  761. idols.

  762. An idol

  763. is a false

  764. God that comes

  765. between us

  766. and the living

  767. God.

  768. And when we

  769. listen to the

  770. idols of this

  771. world,

  772. we will perish.

  773. That is the

  774. warning of Scripture.

  775. But when we

  776. listen to God,

  777. we find life

  778. and hope.

  779. So is there

  780. a God

  781. that compares

  782. to this God?

  783. Well, there are

  784. three things

  785. that Micah

  786. shows to us

  787. in these verses

  788. in the closing

  789. part of chapter 7

  790. that show us

  791. that no God

  792. compares

  793. to this God.

  794. And I want us

  795. to see it

  796. in three ways.

  797. Three ways

  798. that Micah

  799. shows us

  800. no God

  801. compares

  802. to him.

  803. And the first

  804. is no God

  805. compares to him

  806. as a shepherd,

  807. a shepherd king.

  808. No God,

  809. secondly,

  810. we'll see,

  811. compares to him

  812. as sovereign

  813. over this world.

  814. And then thirdly

  815. and finally,

  816. we see no God

  817. compares to him

  818. as saviour.

  819. These three things

  820. Micah shows

  821. to us.

  822. The shepherd,

  823. the way God

  824. is sovereign

  825. and the salvation

  826. that God offers

  827. that no God

  828. compares to him.

  829. So first of all,

  830. we see

  831. the shepherd.

  832. When you look

  833. at verse 13,

  834. it's the end

  835. of a section

  836. that's speaking

  837. about

  838. desolation

  839. coming

  840. to people,

  841. destruction

  842. coming to people.

  843. In verse 13,

  844. it says,

  845. but the earth

  846. will be desolate

  847. because of its

  848. inhabitants

  849. for the fruit

  850. of their deeds.

  851. The land

  852. is made

  853. desolate.

  854. Destruction

  855. is all around.

  856. But yet,

  857. there's hope.

  858. There is hope.

  859. There is a seed

  860. of recovery.

  861. There is a sunrise

  862. after the night

  863. of darkness.

  864. And you see

  865. that Micah

  866. himself

  867. has made

  868. known that

  869. in verse 7

  870. where it says,

  871. but as for me,

  872. I will look

  873. to the Lord.

  874. I will wait

  875. for the God

  876. of my salvation.

  877. My God

  878. will hear

  879. me.

  880. Rejoice

  881. not over me,

  882. O my enemy.

  883. When I fall,

  884. I shall rise.

  885. When I sit

  886. in darkness,

  887. the Lord

  888. will be a light

  889. to me.

  890. That there is hope,

  891. that there is

  892. darkness

  893. in his day,

  894. but there is

  895. hope of the light

  896. to come.

  897. And Psalm 30

  898. is another

  899. wonderful psalm

  900. that speaks

  901. to us

  902. in verse 5

  903. of tears

  904. enduring

  905. for a night,

  906. but joy

  907. comes

  908. in the morning.

  909. And what

  910. makes the difference

  911. in these

  912. circumstances?

  913. When there is

  914. darkness,

  915. when there is

  916. suffering,

  917. but there is

  918. hope.

  919. even

  920. there is

  921. a hope

  922. that we

  923. cannot yet

  924. see,

  925. but there

  926. is a hope.

  927. What makes

  928. the difference?

  929. Well,

  930. it's that God

  931. has not forgotten

  932. his people.

  933. Because you

  934. see that

  935. in the prayer

  936. that Micah

  937. offers up

  938. in verse 14.

  939. Shepherd

  940. your people

  941. with your

  942. staff.

  943. The flock

  944. of your

  945. inheritance

  946. who dwell

  947. alone

  948. in a forest

  949. in the midst

  950. of a garden

  951. land,

  952. let them

  953. graze

  954. in Bashan

  955. and Gilead

  956. as in

  957. the days

  958. of old.

  959. As in

  960. the days

  961. when you

  962. came out

  963. of the

  964. land of

  965. Egypt.

  966. I will

  967. show them

  968. marvelous

  969. things.

  970. There is

  971. hope.

  972. What makes

  973. the difference?

  974. Who is

  975. a God

  976. like you?

  977. As Micah

  978. says,

  979. when it

  980. comes to

  981. this situation,

  982. there is

  983. no God

  984. who will

  985. shepherd

  986. in this

  987. world

  988. apart from

  989. our God.

  990. Shepherd

  991. your people

  992. with your

  993. staff.

  994. The people,

  995. your inheritance,

  996. who you

  997. know and

  998. who you

  999. love so

  1000. well.

  1001. When you

  1002. look at

  1003. the shepherd

  1004. imagery in

  1005. the Old

  1006. Testament,

  1007. it's always

  1008. a picture

  1009. of knowledge.

  1010. It's always

  1011. a picture

  1012. of concern

  1013. and compassion

  1014. when you

  1015. think of

  1016. a true

  1017. shepherd.

  1018. It's the

  1019. image that

  1020. we see

  1021. so often

  1022. throughout the

  1023. Old Testament,

  1024. most particularly

  1025. as we see

  1026. it in

  1027. Psalm 23.

  1028. The shepherd

  1029. was one

  1030. who ruled

  1031. well over

  1032. his flock,

  1033. who provided

  1034. for them

  1035. in every

  1036. way,

  1037. who remembered

  1038. them and

  1039. knew them

  1040. intimately,

  1041. knew every

  1042. sheep,

  1043. every face

  1044. before him.

  1045. He knew

  1046. if there

  1047. was one

  1048. missing.

  1049. He knew

  1050. if there

  1051. was one

  1052. suffering

  1053. or hurting.

  1054. That is

  1055. the knowledge

  1056. that we

  1057. see in

  1058. the shepherds

  1059. of the

  1060. Old Testament.

  1061. And that

  1062. is the

  1063. knowledge of

  1064. God

  1065. for his

  1066. people.

  1067. That is

  1068. the knowledge

  1069. that Psalm

  1070. 23 speaks

  1071. about so

  1072. wonderfully.

  1073. The Lord

  1074. is my

  1075. shepherd,

  1076. no want

  1077. shall I

  1078. know.

  1079. I will

  1080. not lack

  1081. anything

  1082. because my

  1083. shepherd knows

  1084. what I

  1085. need.

  1086. And this

  1087. is the

  1088. care that

  1089. God has

  1090. for his

  1091. people at

  1092. all times,

  1093. and especially

  1094. in their

  1095. suffering.

  1096. In Exodus

  1097. 2,

  1098. we've quoted

  1099. this before,

  1100. but when

  1101. God was

  1102. looking upon

  1103. his people

  1104. in Egypt

  1105. as they

  1106. were suffering

  1107. there,

  1108. it says

  1109. in verse

  1110. 24,

  1111. God heard

  1112. their groaning

  1113. and God

  1114. remembered his

  1115. covenant with

  1116. Abraham,

  1117. with Isaac,

  1118. and with

  1119. Jacob.

  1120. God saw

  1121. the people

  1122. of Israel

  1123. and God

  1124. knew.

  1125. He knew

  1126. what had

  1127. to be done.

  1128. He knew

  1129. that action

  1130. was required.

  1131. Why?

  1132. Because his

  1133. sheep were

  1134. suffering.

  1135. His people

  1136. were suffering.

  1137. And God

  1138. has this

  1139. knowledge for

  1140. his people

  1141. at all

  1142. times.

  1143. Psalm 100,

  1144. another psalm

  1145. that speaks

  1146. so wonderfully

  1147. about the

  1148. shepherd and

  1149. the sheep.

  1150. Know that

  1151. the Lord,

  1152. he is God.

  1153. It is he

  1154. who made us

  1155. and we are

  1156. his.

  1157. We are his

  1158. people,

  1159. the sheep

  1160. of his

  1161. pasture.

  1162. He remembers

  1163. our frame.

  1164. He remembers

  1165. our need.

  1166. He remembers

  1167. our weakness.

  1168. He remembers

  1169. everything

  1170. about us.

  1171. And this

  1172. is the

  1173. plea that

  1174. Micah is

  1175. making here

  1176. in verse 14.

  1177. There is

  1178. desolation,

  1179. there is

  1180. suffering,

  1181. but Micah

  1182. is saying,

  1183. who is a

  1184. God that

  1185. compares to

  1186. you as our

  1187. shepherd?

  1188. Shepherd your

  1189. people with

  1190. your staff.

  1191. the flock

  1192. of your

  1193. inheritance.

  1194. May they

  1195. come again

  1196. and graze

  1197. in Bashan

  1198. and Gilead

  1199. as in the

  1200. days of

  1201. old.

  1202. And it's

  1203. interesting now

  1204. how in

  1205. verse 15

  1206. it ties

  1207. back to

  1208. verse 3

  1209. and 4

  1210. of chapter

  1211. 6.

  1212. As in the

  1213. days when

  1214. you came

  1215. out of the

  1216. land of

  1217. Egypt,

  1218. I will

  1219. show them

  1220. marvelous

  1221. things.

  1222. The Lord

  1223. is here

  1224. speaking.

  1225. And this

  1226. is in

  1227. contrast to

  1228. what he

  1229. was saying

  1230. to them

  1231. in verse

  1232. 3 and

  1233. 4.

  1234. Oh my

  1235. people,

  1236. what have

  1237. I done

  1238. to you?

  1239. How have

  1240. I wearied

  1241. you?

  1242. Answered

  1243. me,

  1244. for I

  1245. brought

  1246. you up

  1247. out of

  1248. Egypt

  1249. and

  1250. redeemed

  1251. you from

  1252. the house

  1253. of slavery.

  1254. I have

  1255. done all

  1256. these things

  1257. for you.

  1258. And what

  1259. is he

  1260. saying?

  1261. I will

  1262. do it

  1263. again.

  1264. I will

  1265. do it

  1266. again.

  1267. as in

  1268. the days

  1269. when you

  1270. came out

  1271. of the

  1272. land of

  1273. Egypt,

  1274. I will

  1275. show them

  1276. marvelous

  1277. things.

  1278. And he

  1279. will

  1280. remind us

  1281. again and

  1282. again that

  1283. no God

  1284. compares

  1285. to him.

  1286. And for

  1287. the people

  1288. of the

  1289. Old

  1290. Testament,

  1291. even into

  1292. the New

  1293. Testament,

  1294. as you

  1295. think of

  1296. the feast

  1297. of the

  1298. Passover,

  1299. the Exodus

  1300. was a

  1301. great

  1302. remembrance

  1303. deliverance

  1304. for them,

  1305. the

  1306. deliverance

  1307. of God,

  1308. the marvelous

  1309. things that

  1310. he did in

  1311. shepherding

  1312. his people,

  1313. in leading

  1314. them,

  1315. is so

  1316. well.

  1317. Well,

  1318. what has

  1319. he done

  1320. to show

  1321. his great

  1322. love for

  1323. us today?

  1324. Can we

  1325. say,

  1326. does any

  1327. God compare

  1328. to this

  1329. God who

  1330. sent his

  1331. own son,

  1332. the shepherd

  1333. of his

  1334. people?

  1335. Shepherding

  1336. us through

  1337. Jesus Christ,

  1338. remembering

  1339. us in

  1340. all our

  1341. great needs,

  1342. even though

  1343. we are

  1344. standing

  1345. before him

  1346. just as

  1347. they were

  1348. in the

  1349. days of

  1350. Micah,

  1351. saying,

  1352. well,

  1353. God has

  1354. left us,

  1355. God has

  1356. abandoned us,

  1357. God has

  1358. turned his

  1359. back on us,

  1360. God has

  1361. weeded us

  1362. with all

  1363. his laws

  1364. and all

  1365. of these

  1366. things.

  1367. How?

  1368. How

  1369. compared to

  1370. this God

  1371. who shows

  1372. us love,

  1373. his steadfast

  1374. love,

  1375. through shepherding

  1376. us through

  1377. his own

  1378. son,

  1379. the son

  1380. Jesus Christ

  1381. who,

  1382. in John

    John 10:14

  1383. 10,

  1384. verse 14

  1385. and 15

  1386. says,

  1387. I am the

  1388. good shepherd,

  1389. I know

  1390. my own,

  1391. and my own

  1392. know me,

  1393. just as the

  1394. Father knows

  1395. me,

  1396. I know

  1397. the Father.

  1398. And what

  1399. does he go

  1400. on to say

  1401. and I

  1402. lay down

  1403. my life

  1404. for the

  1405. sheep?

  1406. That is

  1407. the love

  1408. of the

  1409. shepherd,

  1410. the shepherd

  1411. that Micah

  1412. is pleading

  1413. for,

  1414. to shepherd

  1415. your people,

  1416. to lead

  1417. your people.

  1418. As we

  1419. were hearing

  1420. this morning

  1421. how Jesus

  1422. led his

  1423. disciples out,

  1424. here's another

  1425. great example

  1426. of that as

  1427. well.

  1428. Shepherd,

  1429. lead

  1430. your people.

  1431. The shepherd

  1432. in the Old

  1433. Testament,

  1434. not like

  1435. us today

  1436. who go

  1437. behind the

  1438. sheep,

  1439. trying to

  1440. force them

  1441. the way

  1442. we want

  1443. them to

  1444. go.

  1445. The shepherd

  1446. always led

  1447. from the

  1448. front.

  1449. And so

  1450. our good

  1451. shepherd,

  1452. he has

  1453. led from

  1454. the front.

  1455. He has

  1456. gone before

  1457. us to

  1458. the cross

  1459. to bear

  1460. our sin,

  1461. to give

  1462. us life

  1463. through him,

  1464. that he

  1465. would show

  1466. us marvelous

  1467. things.

  1468. Even as

  1469. in the

  1470. days of

  1471. old and

  1472. even better,

  1473. that we

  1474. have a

  1475. great shepherd

  1476. to watch

  1477. over us.

  1478. Is there

  1479. any God

  1480. that compares

  1481. to this?

  1482. Is there

  1483. anything in

  1484. this world

  1485. that compares

  1486. to the love

  1487. of this

  1488. Savior?

  1489. There is

  1490. nothing.

  1491. There may

  1492. be cheap

  1493. alternatives,

  1494. but they're

  1495. no use at

  1496. the end of

  1497. the day.

  1498. We need

  1499. this shepherd.

  1500. And the

  1501. second thing

  1502. we see

  1503. here is

  1504. in verse

  1505. 16 and

  1506. 17,

  1507. where we

  1508. see the

  1509. promise,

  1510. the sovereign

  1511. promise that

  1512. God gives.

  1513. And this

  1514. is more a

  1515. sign that

  1516. God will

  1517. rule over

  1518. all people

  1519. and all

  1520. nations,

  1521. the good

  1522. and the

  1523. bad.

  1524. The nation

  1525. shall see

  1526. and be

  1527. ashamed of

  1528. all their

  1529. might.

  1530. They shall

  1531. lay their

  1532. hands on

  1533. their mouths,

  1534. their ears

  1535. shall be

  1536. deaf.

  1537. They shall

  1538. lick the

  1539. dust like

  1540. a serpent,

  1541. like the

  1542. crawling

  1543. things of

  1544. the earth.

  1545. They shall

  1546. come trembling

  1547. out of their

  1548. strongholds.

  1549. They shall

  1550. turn in

  1551. dread to

  1552. the Lord

  1553. our God,

  1554. and they

  1555. shall be

  1556. in fear

  1557. of you.

  1558. The nations

  1559. shall see

  1560. and be

  1561. ashamed.

  1562. They will

  1563. turn in

  1564. dread to

  1565. the Lord

  1566. our God.

  1567. All the

  1568. nations

  1569. of this

  1570. world

  1571. will see.

  1572. But what

  1573. do the

  1574. nations

  1575. say today?

  1576. What were

  1577. the nations

  1578. saying in

  1579. the days

  1580. of Micah?

  1581. They were

  1582. saying to

  1583. Micah,

  1584. where is

  1585. your God?

  1586. Where is

  1587. your God?

  1588. God.

  1589. And so

  1590. they say

  1591. to this

  1592. day as

  1593. well,

  1594. where is

  1595. your God?

  1596. We often

  1597. say that

  1598. time goes

  1599. by so

  1600. quickly.

  1601. The years

  1602. go by

  1603. so quickly.

  1604. Later on

  1605. this year,

  1606. it's more

  1607. than 20

  1608. years in

  1609. September

  1610. since the

  1611. terrorist

  1612. attack.

  1613. September

  1614. the 11th

  1615. in the

  1616. United

  1617. States.

  1618. It's

  1619. amazing to

  1620. think just

  1621. how quickly

  1622. the time

  1623. has gone

  1624. past.

  1625. Boxing

  1626. Day last

  1627. year now,

  1628. 2023,

  1629. was 19

  1630. years since

  1631. the tsunami

  1632. in the

  1633. Far East

  1634. struck.

  1635. Where were

  1636. you when

  1637. these things

  1638. happened?

  1639. I'm sure

  1640. for many

  1641. people here

  1642. these events

  1643. they still

  1644. stand out

  1645. in your

  1646. mind.

  1647. You maybe

  1648. remember

  1649. exactly where

  1650. you were

  1651. when you

  1652. heard these

  1653. events were

  1654. happening and

  1655. saw them on

  1656. your television

  1657. screens.

  1658. They were

  1659. huge events,

  1660. monumentous

  1661. events for

  1662. our world

  1663. and all

  1664. the world

  1665. saw this

  1666. happening.

  1667. All ends

  1668. of the

  1669. earth saw

  1670. these things

  1671. taking place.

  1672. And it's

  1673. so often

  1674. in these

  1675. times when

  1676. people will

  1677. question,

  1678. where was

  1679. God?

  1680. Where was

  1681. God when

  1682. these things

  1683. happened?

  1684. John Blanchard,

  1685. an author,

  1686. he wrote

  1687. a book

  1688. and the

  1689. title of

  1690. the book

  1691. was Where

  1692. Was God

  1693. on September

  1694. the 11th?

  1695. And in the

  1696. book he

  1697. highlights the

  1698. challenge that

  1699. these kinds

  1700. of tragedies

  1701. bring to

  1702. us and

  1703. especially

  1704. bring to

  1705. faith.

  1706. How do we

  1707. respond when

  1708. people say

  1709. these questions?

  1710. Where was

  1711. God when

  1712. all of this

  1713. was happening?

  1714. And he

  1715. tells of a

  1716. story when

  1717. he was

  1718. challenged

  1719. himself about

  1720. the question,

  1721. where was

  1722. God?

  1723. And there

  1724. was a time

  1725. when he

  1726. met with

  1727. a lawyer

  1728. called

  1729. Edward

  1730. Tabash.

  1731. Edward

  1732. Tabash

  1733. comes from

  1734. a five

  1735. unbroken

  1736. generation of

  1737. Orthodox

  1738. Jews.

  1739. But the

  1740. Holocaust

  1741. impacted

  1742. his family

  1743. and it

  1744. claimed the

  1745. lives of

  1746. two of his

  1747. own family

  1748. members.

  1749. And it

  1750. turned him

  1751. into a

  1752. passionate

  1753. atheist,

  1754. turned his

  1755. back on

  1756. faith and

  1757. religion.

  1758. And behind

  1759. it all was

  1760. this question,

  1761. how could

  1762. God allow

  1763. this to

  1764. happen?

  1765. And in

  1766. one debate

  1767. that he was

  1768. having,

  1769. it was in

  1770. California,

  1771. he said

  1772. this,

  1773. Edward

  1774. Tabash,

  1775. if the

  1776. God of

  1777. the Bible

  1778. actually

  1779. exists,

  1780. I want

  1781. to sue

  1782. him for

  1783. negligence,

  1784. for being

  1785. asleep at

  1786. the wheel

  1787. of the

  1788. universe when

  1789. my grandfather

  1790. and uncle

  1791. were gassed

  1792. to death

  1793. in

  1794. Auschwitz.

  1795. And you

  1796. can just

  1797. imagine the

  1798. pain that

  1799. he's suffering

  1800. thinking on

  1801. these events,

  1802. but to say

  1803. I want to

  1804. sue the

  1805. God for

  1806. negligence,

  1807. for being

  1808. asleep at

  1809. the wheel

  1810. of the

  1811. universe.

  1812. Was God

  1813. asleep when

  1814. these things

  1815. happened?

  1816. When Auschwitz

  1817. happened and

  1818. so many

  1819. lost their

  1820. lives there?

  1821. John Blanchard

  1822. went on to

  1823. speak about

  1824. this about

  1825. September the

  1826. 11th and

  1827. he said,

  1828. when I was

  1829. asked where

  1830. was God

  1831. when religious

  1832. fanatics

  1833. killed those

  1834. 3,000 people

  1835. in America,

  1836. I replied

  1837. exactly where

  1838. he was

  1839. when religious

  1840. fanatics

  1841. killed his

  1842. son,

  1843. Jesus Christ,

  1844. in complete

  1845. control of

  1846. everything that

  1847. happened.

  1848. This is a

  1849. clear teaching

  1850. of Scripture,

  1851. he goes on

  1852. to say.

  1853. Those who

  1854. combined to

  1855. have Jesus

  1856. crucified were

  1857. wicked men,

  1858. yet his

  1859. death was

  1860. according to

  1861. God's set

  1862. purpose and

  1863. foreknowledge.

  1864. as the

  1865. book of

  1866. Acts,

    Acts 2:23

  1867. chapter 2,

  1868. verse 23,

  1869. makes clear.

  1870. It is hard

  1871. to answer

  1872. some of

  1873. these questions.

  1874. Where was

  1875. God when?

  1876. But that is

  1877. the greatest

  1878. answer we

  1879. can give.

  1880. Exactly where

  1881. he was when

  1882. religious

  1883. fanatics killed

  1884. his son,

  1885. Jesus Christ,

  1886. in complete

  1887. control of

  1888. everything.

  1889. And that's

  1890. hard sometimes

  1891. for us to

  1892. accept.

  1893. But isn't

  1894. it such a

  1895. great assurance

  1896. to us to

  1897. know that

  1898. God is

  1899. sovereign,

  1900. that God

  1901. is in

  1902. control?

  1903. Because what

  1904. does this

  1905. world have

  1906. to offer

  1907. us in

  1908. terms of

  1909. security and

  1910. control?

  1911. Who is in

  1912. control?

  1913. Who is in

  1914. charge of

  1915. events and

  1916. everything that's

  1917. happening in

  1918. this world?

  1919. Is it just

  1920. chance?

  1921. Do we just

  1922. leave it to

  1923. go on as

  1924. it is with

  1925. no thought

  1926. of anything

  1927. or anyone

  1928. being in

  1929. control?

  1930. Well, God

  1931. is in

  1932. control.

  1933. What God

  1934. compares to

  1935. him?

  1936. And the

  1937. knowledge that

  1938. he is in

  1939. control.

  1940. We are all

  1941. sinners, as

  1942. verse 18

  1943. makes clear

  1944. for us.

  1945. But he

  1946. does not

  1947. retain his

  1948. anger forever.

  1949. He has

  1950. mercy.

  1951. And that is

  1952. something wonderful

  1953. for us to

  1954. think on.

  1955. Not to

  1956. turn to

  1957. atheism.

  1958. Not to

  1959. turn away

  1960. from God

  1961. completely and

  1962. accuse him of

  1963. being asleep at

  1964. the wheel of

  1965. the universe

  1966. when all

  1967. these things

  1968. happen.

  1969. But it's a

  1970. time to

  1971. come to

  1972. God, to

  1973. look to

  1974. him, to

  1975. trust in

  1976. him, because

  1977. there is no

  1978. other way to

  1979. salvation.

  1980. There is no

  1981. other way to

  1982. security.

  1983. There's no

  1984. other policy that

  1985. this world can

  1986. offer us that

  1987. will give us

  1988. comfort and

  1989. confidence in

  1990. all of these

  1991. situations apart

  1992. from God.

  1993. Jesus said on

  1994. the cross,

  1995. Father, forgive

  1996. them, for

  1997. they know not

  1998. what they do.

  1999. And to

  2000. know that

  2001. forgiveness, to

  2002. know that

  2003. peace that he

  2004. is offering, to

  2005. know that

  2006. steadfast love

  2007. that we have

  2008. in him.

  2009. When we

  2010. listen to

  2011. God, we

  2012. see his

  2013. sovereign over

  2014. all the good

  2015. and the wicked

  2016. and all events

  2017. of this world.

  2018. And we can

  2019. leave them in

  2020. his hands, for

  2021. we'll never

  2022. understand some

  2023. things.

  2024. But God

  2025. does and God

  2026. knows.

  2027. And is that

  2028. not enough

  2029. for us to

  2030. know that

  2031. he is

  2032. sovereign?

  2033. Well, thirdly

  2034. and finally, we

  2035. see here that

  2036. he is the

  2037. Savior.

  2038. And no

  2039. God compares

  2040. to him when

  2041. it comes to

  2042. salvation.

  2043. In verse

  2044. 18 to

  2045. verse 20,

  2046. make that so

  2047. wonderfully clear

  2048. for us.

  2049. Who is a

  2050. God like you,

  2051. pardoning iniquity,

  2052. passing over

  2053. transgression for

  2054. the remnant of

  2055. his inheritance?

  2056. He does not

  2057. retain his

  2058. anger forever

  2059. because he

  2060. delights in

  2061. steadfast love.

  2062. He will again

  2063. have compassion

  2064. on us.

  2065. He will tread

  2066. our iniquities

  2067. under foot.

  2068. He will cast

  2069. all our sins

  2070. into the

  2071. depths of

  2072. the sea.

  2073. What a

  2074. wonderful God

  2075. we have.

  2076. Is there any

  2077. God in this

  2078. world who can

  2079. do this for

  2080. us?

  2081. Show us

  2082. steadfast love,

  2083. pass over our

  2084. transgression,

  2085. cast our sins

  2086. into the depths

  2087. of the sea?

  2088. No.

  2089. There is no

  2090. other.

  2091. Our greatest

  2092. need is a

  2093. saviour.

  2094. And we have

  2095. one here in

  2096. Jesus Christ.

  2097. Because Jesus

  2098. himself said,

  2099. no one comes

  2100. to the Father

  2101. but by me.

  2102. And he also

  2103. said, it is

  2104. finished.

  2105. I have opened

  2106. the way.

  2107. The way is

  2108. prepared.

  2109. I will lead

  2110. you as my

  2111. people.

  2112. But what

  2113. kind of

  2114. people are

  2115. we?

  2116. Where is

  2117. our confidence?

  2118. Where is

  2119. our assurance

  2120. today?

  2121. Is it in

  2122. anything else

  2123. but God?

  2124. Who is a

  2125. God like

  2126. you?

  2127. A question

  2128. was once

  2129. asked in a

  2130. newspaper article.

  2131. and it

  2132. was seeking

  2133. responses.

  2134. And the

  2135. question was

  2136. this, what's

  2137. wrong with

  2138. the world?

  2139. A simple

  2140. short

  2141. question.

  2142. But a

  2143. question that

  2144. could lead to

  2145. many different

  2146. answers.

  2147. How would

  2148. you answer

  2149. that question

  2150. today?

  2151. Where do

  2152. your thoughts

  2153. immediately go

  2154. when you hear

  2155. that question?

  2156. What's wrong

  2157. with the

  2158. world

  2159. today?

  2160. Well, there

  2161. was a

  2162. number of

  2163. correspondents

  2164. that were

  2165. sent in to

  2166. the paper

  2167. with answers.

  2168. But one

  2169. winning answer

  2170. was chosen.

  2171. And it was

  2172. the shortest

  2173. answer that

  2174. was given.

  2175. And the

  2176. response was

  2177. this.

  2178. In response

  2179. to your

  2180. question,

  2181. what's wrong

  2182. with the

  2183. world?

  2184. I am.

  2185. Yours

  2186. faithfully,

  2187. G.K.

  2188. Chesterton.

  2189. G.K.

  2190. Chesterton

  2191. is a writer,

  2192. an author,

  2193. a Christian

  2194. author.

  2195. And that

  2196. was his

  2197. response.

  2198. Is that

  2199. the first

  2200. response that

  2201. comes to

  2202. your mind

  2203. when you

  2204. hear that

  2205. question?

  2206. Or is it

  2207. our natural

  2208. inclination

  2209. just to go

  2210. away and

  2211. think of

  2212. something and

  2213. somebody else?

  2214. Or do we

  2215. look to

  2216. ourselves

  2217. and say,

  2218. what's wrong

  2219. with the

  2220. world?

  2221. Begin with

  2222. I am.

  2223. My heart

  2224. not being

  2225. right with

  2226. God.

  2227. My not

  2228. trusting in

  2229. him with

  2230. all my

  2231. heart.

  2232. Me not

  2233. depending on

  2234. him for

  2235. security and

  2236. salvation as

  2237. is offered in

  2238. the scripture.

  2239. that's what

  2240. was wrong

  2241. in Micah's

  2242. day.

  2243. It's what's

  2244. wrong in

  2245. our day

  2246. too.

  2247. It's the

  2248. sin of

  2249. our heart

  2250. that is

  2251. wrong with

  2252. this world.

  2253. We are

  2254. alive today

  2255. because,

  2256. as we sang

  2257. in Psalm

  2258. 103,

  2259. God does

  2260. not treat

  2261. our sin

  2262. as it

  2263. deserves

  2264. or repay

  2265. us according

  2266. to our

  2267. iniquities.

  2268. Or to

  2269. put it in

  2270. a more

  2271. positive way

  2272. as Lamentations

  2273. 3 says,

  2274. because of

  2275. the Lord's

  2276. great love

  2277. we are not

  2278. consumed.

  2279. That is

  2280. how we

  2281. are alive

  2282. today.

  2283. Who is

  2284. a God

  2285. like you?

  2286. Peter,

  2287. when he

  2288. was asked

  2289. and the

  2290. disciples were

  2291. asked,

  2292. will you

  2293. also go

  2294. away?

  2295. Will you

  2296. turn away

  2297. from this

  2298. God who

  2299. is offering

  2300. salvation

  2301. through Jesus

  2302. Christ?

  2303. What a

  2304. wonderful

  2305. response he

  2306. gave.

  2307. To whom

  2308. else can

  2309. we go?

  2310. For you

  2311. alone have

  2312. the words

  2313. of eternal

  2314. life.

  2315. There is

  2316. nowhere else

  2317. to go.

  2318. There is

  2319. no place

  2320. we can go

  2321. and find

  2322. assurance

  2323. and insurance

  2324. for eternity

  2325. apart from

  2326. this God.

  2327. God.

  2328. So where

  2329. do we

  2330. go?

  2331. Who is

  2332. a God

  2333. like you?

  2334. There is

  2335. no other.

  2336. And when we

  2337. listen to

  2338. him, we

  2339. see the

  2340. benefits that

  2341. he offers

  2342. to his

  2343. people.

  2344. He will

  2345. shepherd.

  2346. He will

  2347. lead his

  2348. people.

  2349. He is

  2350. sovereign over

  2351. all people

  2352. of this

  2353. world.

  2354. And he

  2355. is preparing

  2356. a salvation

  2357. for his

  2358. people like

  2359. nothing else

  2360. that this

  2361. world can

  2362. offer.

  2363. Paul, when

  2364. he wrote

  2365. to the

  2366. Corinthians,

  2367. in chapter

  2368. 2 of

  2369. 1 Corinthians,

  2370. it says,

  2371. But as it

  2372. is written,

  2373. what no eye

  2374. has seen,

  2375. nor ear heard,

  2376. nor the heart

  2377. of man imagined,

  2378. what God

  2379. has prepared

  2380. for those

  2381. who love

  2382. him.

  2383. No God

  2384. compares

  2385. to this

  2386. God.

  2387. who is

  2388. a God

  2389. like you.

  2390. There is

  2391. no other.

  2392. We can

  2393. compare

  2394. every other

  2395. idol and

  2396. false God

  2397. of this

  2398. world,

  2399. and at the

  2400. end of the

  2401. day, none

  2402. will help.

  2403. Apart from

  2404. this God,

  2405. we have

  2406. nothing.

  2407. Psalm 77

  2408. says,

  2409. in verse

  2410. 13,

  2411. O God,

  2412. most holy

  2413. are your

  2414. ways.

  2415. What God

  2416. compares with

  2417. you,

  2418. you are

  2419. the God

  2420. of miracles,

  2421. whose power

  2422. the nations

  2423. view.

  2424. There is

  2425. no God

  2426. who compares

  2427. with him.

  2428. And whatever

  2429. the world

  2430. puts in front

  2431. of us

  2432. and shows

  2433. us,

  2434. whatever

  2435. tempts us

  2436. away

  2437. from this

  2438. God,

  2439. may we see

  2440. there is

  2441. no benefit

  2442. now or

  2443. for eternity

  2444. in any

  2445. other God

  2446. apart from

  2447. this God

  2448. who will

  2449. shepherd,

  2450. this God

  2451. who is

  2452. sovereign,

  2453. and this

  2454. God who

  2455. can save.

  2456. Let us

  2457. pray.

  2458. our Father

  2459. in heaven,

  2460. we rejoice

  2461. in your

  2462. word to

  2463. us and

  2464. we thank

  2465. you that

  2466. it speaks

  2467. to us

  2468. of your

  2469. judgment

  2470. in so

  2471. many ways

  2472. and your

  2473. sovereignty

  2474. over all

  2475. people,

  2476. but your

  2477. great assurance

  2478. to your

  2479. people that

  2480. you will

  2481. shepherd,

  2482. that you

  2483. will save.

  2484. And we

  2485. pray,

  2486. Lord,

  2487. that you

  2488. will help

  2489. us to

  2490. hear your

  2491. voice in

  2492. the midst

  2493. of all

  2494. others,

  2495. to hear

  2496. and to

  2497. listen and

  2498. to follow

  2499. you.

  2500. For we

  2501. ask it in

  2502. Jesus'

  2503. name.

  2504. Amen.

  2505. We're

  2506. going to

  2507. conclude by

  2508. singing to

  2509. God's

  2510. praise in

  2511. Psalm 135.

  2512. We sang the

  2513. end of this

  2514. psalm from

  2515. the Scottish

  2516. Psalter,

  2517. which reminded

  2518. us of the

  2519. idols of

  2520. this world.

  2521. But the

  2522. beginning of

  2523. the psalm

  2524. reminds us

  2525. of the

  2526. greatness

  2527. of our

  2528. God.

  2529. Praise the

  2530. Lord,

  2531. all you

  2532. as servants.

  2533. Praise his

  2534. name with

  2535. glad accord.

  2536. You who

  2537. serve God

  2538. in his

  2539. temple,

  2540. in the

  2541. dwelling of

  2542. the Lord.

  2543. Then verse

  2544. 5 says,

  2545. For I know

  2546. the Lord

  2547. is mighty,

  2548. greater than

  2549. all gods

  2550. he is.

  2551. He is

  2552. sovereign in

  2553. the heavens,

  2554. on the

  2555. earth,

  2556. and in

  2557. the sea.

  2558. Psalm 135,

  2559. the Sing

  2560. Psalms version,

  2561. page 176.

  2562. We'll sing

  2563. from verse

  2564. 1 to 6.

  2565. Praise the

  2566. Lord, all

  2567. you

  2568. who

  2569. servants,

  2570. praise his

  2571. name with

  2572. glad accord.

  2573. You who

  2574. serve God

  2575. in his

  2576. temple,

  2577. in the

  2578. dwelling of

  2579. the Lord.

  2580. Praise the

  2581. Lord, for

  2582. this is

  2583. victory.

  2584. He is

  2585. good, his

  2586. praise

  2587. proclaim.

  2588. Praise the

  2589. Lord, for

  2590. it is

  2591. pleasant

  2592. to sing

  2593. praises to

  2594. his name.

  2595. For

  2596. the Lord

  2597. has chosen

  2598. Jacob

  2599. to be

  2600. known to

  2601. him

  2602. alone,

  2603. Israel

  2604. to be

  2605. his

  2606. treasure,

  2607. set apart

  2608. to be

  2609. his

  2610. own.

  2611. For

  2612. I know

  2613. the

  2614. Lord

  2615. is

  2616. mighty,

  2617. greater

  2618. than

  2619. all

  2620. gods

  2621. he

  2622. be.

  2623. He is

  2624. sovereign

  2625. in the

  2626. heavens,

  2627. on the

  2628. earth

  2629. and in

  2630. the

  2631. sea.

  2632. After

  2633. the

  2634. benediction,

  2635. I'll go to

  2636. the door to

  2637. my left.

  2638. We'll

  2639. close with

  2640. the

  2641. benediction.

  2642. Now may

  2643. grace,

  2644. mercy and

  2645. peace from

  2646. God,

  2647. Father,

  2648. Son and

  2649. Holy Spirit

  2650. rest upon

  2651. and abide

  2652. with you

  2653. all,

  2654. now and

  2655. forevermore.

  2656. Amen.

  2657. will

  2658. pray.

  2659. Pray for

  2660. you

  2661. them
