  1. So, Psalm 98 is our first psalm of praise this morning, Psalm 98, and it's on page 129.

  2. We're singing verses 1 to 6. The tune is Peter's psalm.

  3. O sing a new song to the Lord, for wonders he has done. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  4. The Lord declared his saving work and made it to be known to all the nations of the world.

  5. His righteousness is shown. Psalm 98, verses 1 to 6. And we'll stand to sing. If you're able to stand, please stand.

    Psalms 98:1–6

  6. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  7. The Lord declared his saving work and made it to be known.

  8. To all the nations of the world, his righteousness is shown.

  9. His death, but love and faithfulness, he has remembered them.

  10. The covenant, he made with him the house of Israel.

  11. And all the nations of the earth have seen what God has done.

  12. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  13. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  14. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  15. The Lord, O all we are, shall love be and rejoice.

  16. Make music and be children, to them lift up your voice.

  17. With heart, his music to the Lord.

  18. With heart, his graces sing.

  19. With trumpet and with glory rejoice.

  20. Before the Lord the King.

  21. Let's join together now in prayer.

  22. We're praying specifically for the children and for the Sunday school.

  23. Lord our God, help us, we pray, to rejoice today in your presence here as we gather to worship you.

  24. And we thank you for the children who are with us.

  25. We thank you for all the young folk and children who belong to the congregation and their homes and families.

  26. We pray for them today.

  27. And we ask, O Lord, that they may progress in the knowledge of the Lord as their Savior.

  28. And we pray that you'll bless the teaching they receive from week to week in their own homes, in the Sunday school here and elsewhere.

  29. We thank you for the way that they form such an important part of the congregation's life.

  30. And we pray that we may continually bear them before you in your presence in prayer.

  31. And so we ask now as we seek to wait upon you here that you'll bless them.

  32. And as they continue, O Lord, to attend upon Sunday school and creche and tweenies,

  33. we ask that your own blessing will continue to be with us.

  34. Hear us, we pray now, and pardon our sin for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  35. My children, the Sunday school is looking today at the story of Simeon and Anna.

  36. You'll find an account of that in Luke chapter 2 and from verse 27 or so.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  37. And at verse 27, we read about Simeon.

  38. He was a holy man, a man who was waiting for something that God had promised in the Old Testament,

  39. and that was the coming of the Savior.

  40. And he was actually told, he had been told by God that he would not die until he had actually seen for himself the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  41. And when the Savior was born, some time after that, Simeon came to the temple,

  42. and the parents of Jesus brought the child, the infant Jesus, just to follow out what was required in the law of God.

  43. And at verse 28, we read,

  44. And also we find Anna, also mentioned in the next part of the chapter.

  45. So, Simeon and Anna were both waiting for this one important event of the birth of the Savior, the coming of the Savior.

  46. And this is what Simeon did after seeing Jesus, the infant Jesus.

  47. He took him up in his arms, and he blessed God.

  48. Now, this is one of my favorite passages in the whole Bible.

  49. It's such a wonderful passage.

  50. The infant Jesus, and there's the old man, Simeon, waiting for the coming of Jesus.

  51. And there he is, and as he's looking at Jesus, as he takes him up in his arms and embraces him in his arms,

  52. he looks down at him and says,

  53. Now, Lord, I can go in peace, because my eyes have seen your salvation.

  54. Isn't that an amazing thing?

  55. That he could say of this infant child, there is God's salvation in my arms.

  56. And now I can go from this world, he said, in peace.

  57. He was full of thanks, full of gratitude to God, that God had fulfilled his promise, not just for him, but indeed for all who would come to be saved through Jesus.

  58. And he put it there even, for all people, this is a revelation.

  59. This is your revelation for them.

  60. Now, from that, there are two or three things that we can say about ourselves or apply to ourselves.

  61. First of all, you need to take Jesus up.

  62. I'm speaking especially to the young ones, but it's true for us all.

  63. You need to take Jesus up in your heart the same way as Simeon took him up in his arms.

  64. Just picture Simeon reaching out and taking the infant Jesus like that into his arms.

  65. Well, this is what we have the opportunity to do ourselves, that we can reach out and by faith and by trust, we can bring Jesus into our hearts.

  66. We can have Jesus coming to live in our hearts as we embrace him, as we receive him, as he offers himself to us in the Bible, in the Gospel.

  67. And then we can be full of joy as well.

  68. We can be full of joy because we then have salvation in our lives, in our hearts, God's salvation.

  69. Just as Simeon could say, now my eyes have seen your salvation, so we can say, having Jesus in your life, you have God's salvation in him.

  70. So today, young ones and old ones, we can embrace Jesus, welcome him into our lives, and so rejoice and be glad and be happy that we have God's salvation in him.

  71. Now, Simeon did this in public.

  72. Now, that's important as well.

  73. He wasn't embarrassed that people were seeing this, that people were hearing him saying this.

  74. And when you have taken up Jesus into your heart, and when you hold Jesus in your heart, and when he becomes precious to you, then you want to tell the whole world about him.

  75. Because what makes him precious to you as a savior is what you want others to have as well.

  76. And it's wonderful to hear of you young folks yourselves, children, telling others about the Sunday school, about how good it is to learn about Jesus.

  77. That's you just like Simeon telling the world how precious Jesus is.

  78. So today, Simeon and Anna tell us the importance of taking Jesus to ourselves, the importance of rejoicing in Jesus, being glad that we have him, and the importance of telling the world that this is the savior who is for them as well, Jesus Christ, the Lord.

  79. So may God bless these words.

  80. Let's say the Lord's prayer now together.

  81. Amen.

  82. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  83. Thy kingdom come.

  84. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  85. Give us this day our daily bread.

  86. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

  87. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  88. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.

  89. Amen.

  90. We're going to sing again now.

  91. We're singing this time in Psalm 25.

  92. Psalm 25 in the Sing Psalms version, page 29.

  93. Another tune is Finart, and we're singing verses 1 to 7.

  94. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

  95. I trust in you continually.

  96. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my foes gloat over me.

  97. No one who sets his hope in you will ever suffer such disgrace.

  98. But those who act with treachery, humiliating shame, will face.

  99. So to the tune Finart, verses 1 to 7, to God's praise.

  100. Let us sing.

  101. Let us sing.

  102. Let us sing.

  103. Let us sing.

  104. Let us sing.

  105. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

  106. I trust in you continually.

  107. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my foes go over me.

  108. No one who sets his hope in you will ever suffer such disgrace,

  109. but those who act with treachery, humiliating shame will face.

  110. O Lord, reveal to me your ways, and all your paths help me to know.

  111. Direct and guide me in your turn, instruct me in the way to go.

  112. You are my Saviour and my God, all day I hope in you alone.

  113. Remember, Lord, your love and grace, which from past ages you have shown.

  114. Do not recall my sins of youth, or my rebellious evil ways.

  115. Remember me in your great love, for you, O Lord, are good always.

  116. Okay.

  117. We're going to read from God's Word in the Gospel of Luke.

  118. And it's chapter 24.

  119. We're reading verses 36 through to the end of the chapter.

  120. This is Luke's account of those who met with Jesus after his resurrection,

  121. as they were traveling on the road to a village called Emmaus.

  122. You'll find that from verse 13, and the incident as it's described there.

  123. And then from verse 36, Jesus having spoken to them and taught them as to who he was,

  124. and the scriptures being fulfilled.

  125. He said then in verse 36,

  126. And when he said to them,

  127. And when he said to them,

  128. He showed them his hands and his feet.

  129. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them,

  130. Have you anything here to eat?

  131. And they gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.

  132. Then he said to them,

  133. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,

  134. That everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

  135. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,

  136. and said to them,

  137. Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer,

  138. and on the third day rise from the dead,

  139. and that repentance and forgiveness of sins

  140. should be proclaimed in his name to all nations,

  141. beginning from Jerusalem.

  142. You are witnesses of these things.

  143. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you,

  144. but stay in the city till you are clothed with power from on high.

  145. Then he led them out as far as Bethany,

  146. and lifting up his hands he blessed them.

  147. While he blessed them, he parted from them,

  148. and was carried up into heaven.

  149. And they worshipped him,

  150. and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

  151. and were continually in the temple,

  152. blessing God.

  153. Amen. May God bless to us again this reading of his word.

  154. Let's now call upon him again in prayer.

  155. Our gracious God,

  156. we thank you for the testimony of your word,

  157. that the fulfillment of your promises,

  158. given so long ago,

  159. came to be fully realized

  160. in the person of our Savior,

  161. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  162. We thank you today, Lord,

  163. for what we have read,

  164. even in this short passage,

  165. and the words that we have been singing

  166. as they describe your salvation.

  167. And we thank you for all that has come to us in him,

  168. and for everything, Lord,

  169. that you have brought to us

  170. by way of your redemption,

  171. your salvation,

  172. the forgiveness of our sins.

  173. Lord, help us, we pray today,

  174. to not only embrace these great truths for ourselves,

  175. but to embrace you as that person

  176. in whom we have salvation.

  177. for we know that there is no other name

  178. given under heaven amongst men

  179. whereby we must be saved.

  180. And so help us, Lord,

  181. we pray today,

  182. to have our trust deposited in you,

  183. to have our lives given over to you,

  184. to be ruled by you,

  185. and to give ourselves to you,

  186. to your service,

  187. while we have the opportunity

  188. of doing so in this life.

  189. We thank you today, Lord,

  190. that we gather as worshippers

  191. of your great name,

  192. that you have been exalted to heaven

  193. to sit at the right hand

  194. of the Father on high,

  195. and that you receive the worship

  196. of your people

  197. as we worship you today

  198. as God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  199. We give thanks, O Lord,

  200. for the revelation you have given

  201. of yourself

  202. and of the way in which we find

  203. in the very mystery,

  204. but beauty of the Godhead,

  205. our redemption to be placed.

  206. We give thanks, O Lord,

  207. to you as our Father,

  208. who sent the Son into the world,

  209. as to give him to the death

  210. of the cross.

  211. And we give thanks, O Lord,

  212. to you for coming into the world

  213. and for giving of yourself

  214. obediently and fully

  215. to the death which we deserve,

  216. but could never fulfill ourselves.

  217. And we give thanks for all

  218. that that death accomplished,

  219. for the way in which

  220. the will of God

  221. not only expressed in him,

  222. but also the wrath of God

  223. coming to rest upon him

  224. instead of his people,

  225. and the justice of God

  226. satisfied fully.

  227. We bless you, Lord,

  228. today for the work

  229. of your Holy Spirit,

  230. and we thank you

  231. that the Holy Spirit

  232. takes the things of Christ

  233. and shows them to us.

  234. And we pray today

  235. that that may be

  236. our experience here,

  237. that however we appear

  238. before you,

  239. whatever our circumstances

  240. in life may be,

  241. and whatever our relationship

  242. with you presently is,

  243. Lord, we pray that today

  244. all of us will leave

  245. this gathering

  246. as people who know

  247. the Lord for ourselves,

  248. and to come to be

  249. as we saw with Simeon,

  250. embrace the Lord Jesus Christ,

  251. and to take you up

  252. into our hearts,

  253. and to dwell believingly

  254. upon you

  255. for every day

  256. that goes by.

  257. So bless us,

  258. we pray,

  259. once again

  260. as a congregation

  261. of your people.

  262. Lord, we thank you

  263. for every encouragement

  264. that you give us,

  265. for every way

  266. in which your blessing

  267. is revealed to us,

  268. and for every way

  269. that we can still

  270. wait upon you

  271. for all our worship services

  272. and all our related activities

  273. throughout each week.

  274. We thank you

  275. for all that you enable us

  276. to do,

  277. for all that you enable us

  278. to carry out.

  279. Lord, we pray again

  280. that you would bless

  281. all of these activities

  282. and enterprises

  283. that we are privileged

  284. to be part of

  285. and to join in with.

  286. Lord, we pray

  287. that you would especially

  288. bless the gospel,

  289. for we know

  290. that whatever activities

  291. we engage in

  292. or organize

  293. or set up,

  294. that they are to be

  295. subsumed under our concern

  296. for the glory of your name,

  297. through the blessing

  298. of your word,

  299. through your salvation

  300. coming to be known

  301. by those who come

  302. under the teaching

  303. of your word.

  304. We ask today

  305. that you'd bless us

  306. in all the various ways

  307. in which we need

  308. your blessing,

  309. O Lord.

  310. Bless us in our families

  311. and homes.

  312. Bless us in our relationships,

  313. one with another,

  314. in marriages,

  315. in being parents

  316. and grandparents,

  317. and bless again

  318. our children

  319. and our grandchildren.

  320. We ask, Lord,

  321. today that you would

  322. be pleased

  323. to receive them

  324. to yourself

  325. in blessing

  326. and to carry out

  327. further

  328. their standing

  329. in the gospel

  330. so that they may come,

  331. Lord,

  332. to be truly rooted

  333. and grounded

  334. in the Lord himself.

  335. We ask your blessing

  336. for every activity

  337. that we engage in

  338. from day to day

  339. and pray that you would

  340. continue, Lord,

  341. to encourage us

  342. by the work of your Spirit

  343. being made known

  344. amongst us.

  345. We ask your blessing

  346. today to be

  347. with all of our number

  348. who have difficulties

  349. and trials

  350. to contend with

  351. in the course

  352. of their lives.

  353. We ask, O Lord,

  354. that any of ourselves

  355. here present

  356. or watching online

  357. who have trials

  358. today to contend with

  359. will know

  360. of your upholding

  361. and supporting of them

  362. and of your encouragement.

  363. Draw us,

  364. we pray,

  365. to yourself

  366. amongst all

  367. the changes

  368. and the turns

  369. of life

  370. in your providence.

  371. Help us,

  372. we pray,

  373. to constantly

  374. reflect upon

  375. your wisdom

  376. and your right

  377. to rule our lives.

  378. And we pray

  379. that you would give us

  380. a willing heart,

  381. O Lord,

  382. day by day

  383. to place our trust

  384. in you.

  385. We remember, too,

  386. Lord,

  387. all today

  388. in our community

  389. who have suffered

  390. loss in these days

  391. or recent times.

  392. We pray that you

  393. bless those

  394. who have lost loved ones

  395. and who mourn over them

  396. and continue to miss them

  397. from their lives.

  398. We pray for them

  399. and we pray

  400. for their comfort.

  401. You alone

  402. are the great

  403. comforter

  404. who can comfort

  405. in a way

  406. that none other can.

  407. And we pray

  408. that you would grant

  409. that comfort

  410. to them today

  411. and to all of us,

  412. Lord,

  413. in our circumstances.

  414. Whenever we have

  415. circumstances

  416. of trial

  417. and pain,

  418. of disappointment,

  419. of unexpected events,

  420. we pray,

  421. Lord,

  422. that you would

  423. grant

  424. that we may be

  425. drawn to yourself.

  426. and remember,

  427. we pray all

  428. who help others

  429. in their time of need.

  430. We thank you

  431. for all in our community

  432. who attend to us

  433. by way of nursing care

  434. and medical practices,

  435. both in hospital

  436. and also in the hospice

  437. in Bethesda,

  438. in our care homes.

  439. We thank you again

  440. for the provision

  441. that is made for us there.

  442. We pray that you

  443. would bless those

  444. who attend to us

  445. in our times

  446. of bereavement

  447. and sorrow.

  448. Remember,

  449. the undertaker,

  450. his staff,

  451. we thank you for them

  452. and for the way

  453. that they are so helpful

  454. to us

  455. in these times of need.

  456. We pray that you

  457. will continue

  458. to provide for them

  459. as each day goes by.

  460. And we ask you

  461. a blessing

  462. for all others

  463. in our community

  464. who carry out

  465. such valuable service

  466. for all the emergency services.

  467. We pray for the street pastors

  468. who go out

  469. in the late evenings

  470. and early mornings.

  471. And Lord,

  472. we ask that you

  473. would keep them safe.

  474. We pray that you

  475. would bless their ministry

  476. in their community.

  477. We pray that they

  478. may be of much benefit

  479. to those that they meet with.

  480. And we ask that you

  481. would help them

  482. as they seek

  483. to encourage others,

  484. that you would grant

  485. encouragement

  486. to themselves.

  487. ourselves.

  488. We pray too

  489. that you'd bless us

  490. in our further

  491. waiting upon you here.

  492. And we ask that

  493. your blessing

  494. will be with us

  495. throughout our nation

  496. at this time

  497. and these difficult times.

  498. We ask that you'd bless

  499. those who are

  500. suffering different ways

  501. from lack of work

  502. or lack of income.

  503. And we pray that you would,

  504. Lord,

  505. help them

  506. and help them

  507. to come

  508. to trust in you,

  509. to know

  510. the riches

  511. of eternal life.

  512. Even though we know

  513. that our financial

  514. and economic situation

  515. is in itself important.

  516. Grant to us,

  517. Lord,

  518. that we have

  519. our affection

  520. on those things

  521. which are above,

  522. those things

  523. which are unseen,

  524. these riches

  525. that are within

  526. your salvation

  527. and provision

  528. for us

  529. in Christ Jesus.

  530. Remember our rulers.

  531. Lord,

  532. be with them,

  533. we pray,

  534. in different governments

  535. and administrations.

  536. We pray for wisdom

  537. for them.

  538. We pray especially

  539. for the light

  540. of your gospel truth

  541. to come

  542. to dwell in their hearts

  543. and to come

  544. to guide their minds

  545. and their thoughts.

  546. We pray throughout

  547. the world,

  548. Lord,

  549. today,

  550. that where there is

  551. conflict,

  552. war,

  553. strife,

  554. terrorism,

  555. lack of resources,

  556. devastation,

  557. earthquake,

  558. and floods,

  559. O Lord,

  560. we pray that

  561. throughout the world

  562. your own kingdom

  563. may advance,

  564. that we may,

  565. as we have been thinking

  566. and reading through

  567. and saying the Lord's Prayer,

  568. help us truly

  569. to know, Lord,

  570. and to come

  571. to experience

  572. your will being done

  573. on earth

  574. as it is in heaven.

  575. And we pray

  576. that your kingdom

  577. will advance.

  578. Remember the places

  579. in the world

  580. where there is

  581. such devastation

  582. of war.

  583. We think of

  584. the Middle East

  585. at this time

  586. and ask that

  587. you would bless

  588. those who are

  589. seeking to bring

  590. peace of a proper

  591. kind to these places,

  592. Gaza and Israel.

  593. We pray for Ukraine

  594. and their situation,

  595. asking, Lord,

  596. that you'd continue

  597. to bless them

  598. and to bless

  599. your people there.

  600. And we ask

  601. that you'd continue

  602. to bless those

  603. of them who are

  604. with us here

  605. in this congregation

  606. as a family.

  607. Lord, continue.

  608. We pray to provide

  609. for them.

  610. Help us to continue

  611. to pray for them

  612. and for all

  613. who belong

  614. to that nation

  615. at this time.

  616. We ask that you

  617. would continue

  618. to bless them

  619. with that

  620. persevering spirit

  621. that would seek

  622. to resist aggression

  623. and to seek

  624. to live their lives

  625. again in freedom.

  626. And so bless us now,

  627. we pray,

  628. and hear our prayer.

  629. Pardon our many sins,

  630. we pray in Jesus' name.

  631. Amen.

  632. Amen.

  633. We're going to sing again

  634. to God's praise

  635. this time in Psalm 21.

  636. Psalm 21,

  637. and that's in the

  638. Scottish Psalter this time,

  639. verses 1 to 6.

  640. The King,

  641. in Thy great strength,

  642. O Lord,

  643. shall very joyful be.

  644. In Thy salvation,

  645. rejoice,

  646. how vehemently

  647. shall he.

  648. And as we read

  649. through the words

  650. of this psalm,

  651. we think of the Lord

  652. Jesus Christ himself

  653. in whom they are

  654. so wonderfully fulfilled

  655. and how he himself

  656. has come to rejoice

  657. in the salvation

  658. that he has provided himself

  659. and come with blessings

  660. to occupy the crown

  661. that's now upon his head

  662. at God's right hand.

  663. So Psalm 21,

  664. we're singing

  665. verses 1 to 6,

  666. and the tune this time

  667. is Paisley,

  668. the King,

  669. in Thy great strength,

  670. O Lord.

  671. The King,

  672. in Thy great strength,

  673. O Lord,

  674. shall very joyful be.

  675. And Thy salvation,

  676. rejoice,

  677. how vehemently

  678. shall he.

  679. Thou hast bestowed upon him

  680. all that his heart would have,

  681. and Thou from him

  682. didst not withhold

  683. what e'er his lips

  684. to crave.

  685. For Thou with blessings

  686. him previst

  687. of goodness manifold,

  688. and Thou hast set upon his head

  689. a crown of purest gold.

  690. When he decided life of thee,

  691. Thou life to him didst give,

  692. in such a land of peace

  693. that he forevermore should live.

  694. in that salvation

  695. in that salvation

  696. wrought by thee,

  697. his glory is made great.

  698. Honor and comely majesty

  699. thou hast upon him said,

  700. because that Thou

  701. forevermore

  702. most blessed

  703. hast him made,

  704. and Thou hast with Thy

  705. countenance

  706. made him exceeding

  707. glad.

  708. Well, for a short time,

  709. let's turn again to the passage

  710. we read in Luke 24,

  711. and looking this morning

  712. at the final few verses

  713. from verse 50.

  714. Then he, Jesus,

  715. led them out as far as Bethany,

  716. and lifting up his hands,

  717. he blessed them.

  718. While he blessed them,

  719. he parted from them

  720. and was carried up into heaven.

  721. And they worshipped him

  722. and returned to Jerusalem

  723. with great joy

  724. and were continually

  725. in the temple

  726. blessing God.

  727. We want to look at this passage

  728. under the general title

  729. of Following Christ's Lead

  730. into 2024.

  731. In other words,

  732. that as the passage

  733. deals with Jesus

  734. leading these disciples,

  735. we learn much

  736. that will benefit us,

  737. we hope,

  738. as we seek to follow

  739. his leading

  740. and guidance of us

  741. through the year

  742. that has just

  743. very recently begun.

  744. Luke ends

  745. his gospel,

  746. his book,

  747. the gospel of Luke,

  748. as he began.

  749. He ends it

  750. with worship,

  751. the worship of God,

  752. as he began,

  753. with a reference

  754. in different ways

  755. to the worship of God.

  756. And of course,

  757. in between,

  758. Luke fills

  759. the gospel

  760. with an account

  761. of Christ's ministry

  762. from his birth

  763. through to his death

  764. and here

  765. his resurrection

  766. and ascension

  767. to glory.

  768. And the focus

  769. really in these verses

  770. from the beginning

  771. of this chapter

  772. is on the fact

  773. that this in fact

  774. is the same person

  775. who died

  776. who is now

  777. meeting with

  778. these disciples

  779. and showing himself

  780. to them

  781. and then taken up

  782. from them

  783. into heaven.

  784. And that's an important point.

  785. It's not a different Jesus

  786. who appeared

  787. after his resurrection

  788. and in these passages here

  789. to the Jesus

  790. they knew

  791. before he died.

  792. It's the same person,

  793. the same Jesus

  794. who died

  795. and rose again

  796. and now comes

  797. to be taken

  798. to heaven.

  799. And in verse 42

  800. you can see

  801. a reference there

  802. to the fact

  803. that it's still

  804. very much

  805. the human Jesus.

  806. He took this piece

  807. of broiled fish

  808. and he took it

  809. and ate before them.

  810. In other words,

  811. he demonstrates

  812. this is not really

  813. a spirit

  814. that is not

  815. some ghost-like

  816. phantom-like figure.

  817. It is in fact

  818. Jesus himself.

  819. His humanity

  820. is still true humanity.

  821. Whatever we say

  822. of the meaning

  823. of that verse

  824. this is obviously

  825. a demonstration

  826. that he isn't

  827. still the same Jesus.

  828. He's still the same person.

  829. He is still fully human

  830. just as he is God.

  831. And verses 50 to 53

  832. then take us

  833. to see how

  834. the emphasis

  835. on the resurrection

  836. of Jesus,

  837. the appearance

  838. of Jesus

  839. after the resurrection

  840. and how that

  841. in a way

  842. logically

  843. in terms of

  844. God's provision

  845. of salvation

  846. and provision

  847. of all that's in Jesus

  848. as it logically

  849. in that sense

  850. flows into

  851. his ascension.

  852. One thing just

  853. carries on into

  854. the other,

  855. the resurrection

  856. and the appearances

  857. carry on into

  858. his being taken

  859. from this world

  860. up into glory.

  861. And there are

  862. three things

  863. that we can look at

  864. from these final

  865. verses of Luke.

  866. Three things

  867. that apply

  868. to our own

  869. Christian experience

  870. that we can look at

  871. as significant features

  872. of a Christian experience

  873. that I hope

  874. we all can follow

  875. today

  876. and if not

  877. then you have to

  878. ask yourself

  879. the question

  880. why can't I

  881. I'm not yet

  882. in that position

  883. to experience

  884. and enjoy

  885. these experiences.

  886. What are they?

  887. Well here we find

  888. first of all

  889. this Christian life

  890. the life

  891. of following Jesus

  892. it's a life

  893. willing to be

  894. led by Christ.

  895. A life willing

  896. to be led by Christ.

  897. It's secondly

  898. a life secure

  899. within Christ's

  900. intercession.

  901. Within Christ's

  902. blessing

  903. we'll see that

  904. that takes us

  905. to think about

  906. his intercession.

  907. And thirdly

  908. it's a life

  909. rejoicing

  910. in worshipping

  911. Christ.

  912. A life

  913. willing to be

  914. led by him

  915. a life secure

  916. within his

  917. intercession

  918. and a life

  919. that rejoices

  920. in worshipping

  921. him.

  922. then he led

  923. them out

  924. as far as

  925. to Bethany.

  926. Now that's a

  927. deliberate reference

  928. it seems by Luke.

  929. It doesn't say

  930. that he walked

  931. with them

  932. as far as

  933. Bethany.

  934. He actually

  935. says specifically

  936. and deliberately

  937. he led them

  938. out.

  939. He actually

  940. led them

  941. and he went

  942. before them.

  943. In other words

  944. they were

  945. following him.

  946. He deliberately

  947. chose

  948. this way

  949. of

  950. progressing

  951. towards

  952. his ascension.

  953. It is

  954. Jesus

  955. who chose

  956. the route.

  957. It is

  958. Jesus

  959. who went

  960. before them.

  961. It is

  962. Jesus

  963. who led

  964. them.

  965. He was

  966. the leader

  967. until he

  968. was taken

  969. up from

  970. them.

  971. They were

  972. under

  973. his

  974. direction.

  975. And that

  976. itself

  977. seems a

  978. simple point

  979. is a very

  980. important

  981. factor

  982. in our

  983. discipleship.

  984. In our

  985. living life

  986. under the

  987. direction

  988. and control

  989. and government

  990. of Jesus.

  991. It is

  992. life

  993. willing to

  994. be led

  995. by Christ.

  996. A life

  997. that wants

  998. indeed to

  999. know more

  1000. and more

  1001. of his

  1002. leading and

  1003. of his

  1004. guidance,

  1005. of his

  1006. going before

  1007. us and

  1008. of his

  1009. being with

  1010. us.

  1011. In other

  1012. words,

  1013. the turns

  1014. and the

  1015. climbs

  1016. and the

  1017. descents,

  1018. the experiences

  1019. of providence

  1020. which is

  1021. God's

  1022. providence,

  1023. Christ's

  1024. providence,

  1025. all that

  1026. we find

  1027. in the

  1028. turnings

  1029. of our

  1030. experiences

  1031. from day

  1032. to day,

  1033. the gains

  1034. and the

  1035. losses,

  1036. the highs

  1037. and the

  1038. lows,

  1039. the pains

  1040. and the

  1041. joys,

  1042. the unexpected

  1043. things and

  1044. the expected

  1045. things,

  1046. whatever they

  1047. are as

  1048. they combine

  1049. together in

  1050. the providence,

  1051. in the lot

  1052. that we

  1053. have,

  1054. that is

  1055. by Christ's

  1056. choosing.

  1057. That is

  1058. by Christ's

  1059. choosing.

  1060. And our

  1061. peace of

  1062. heart

  1063. comes

  1064. from

  1065. acceptance

  1066. of that

  1067. great

  1068. fact.

  1069. Because we

  1070. will never

  1071. have that

  1072. peace of

  1073. heart if

  1074. we keep

  1075. rebelling

  1076. against the

  1077. Lord and

  1078. against His

  1079. wisdom.

  1080. Everything in

  1081. your life

  1082. today has

  1083. been appointed

  1084. by Jesus.

  1085. Not just

  1086. appointed in

  1087. any old

  1088. way, in a

  1089. loose kind

  1090. of a way,

  1091. but appointed

  1092. deliberately and

  1093. appointed wisely.

  1094. I think one

  1095. of the things

  1096. that we

  1097. always need

  1098. to come

  1099. back,

  1100. myself

  1101. especially,

  1102. again and

  1103. again to,

  1104. is the fact

  1105. that it is

  1106. the wise

  1107. Savior,

  1108. the wise

  1109. God,

  1110. who chooses

  1111. the route

  1112. for us.

  1113. It's not

  1114. the one we

  1115. would have

  1116. chosen

  1117. ourselves.

  1118. If Jesus

  1119. had left

  1120. the route

  1121. to these

  1122. disciples and

  1123. said to

  1124. them,

  1125. well on

  1126. you go

  1127. and I'll

  1128. just follow

  1129. you and

  1130. just wherever

  1131. you want

  1132. to meet,

  1133. wherever you

  1134. want to

  1135. stop,

  1136. I'll meet

  1137. with you

  1138. there.

  1139. He led

  1140. them out

  1141. as far

  1142. as Bethany.

  1143. Is that

  1144. how it is

  1145. with your

  1146. own life

  1147. today?

  1148. Is he

  1149. leading your

  1150. life onwards

  1151. day by day?

  1152. Are you

  1153. today willing

  1154. to be led

  1155. by this

  1156. Jesus?

  1157. Are you

  1158. willing that

  1159. your life

  1160. will be

  1161. patterned

  1162. by his

  1163. wisdom

  1164. and his

  1165. choice

  1166. of the

  1167. route

  1168. for you?

  1169. That's all

  1170. built into

  1171. this very

  1172. brief reference.

  1173. He led

  1174. them out

  1175. as far

  1176. as to

  1177. Bethany.

  1178. And not

  1179. only that,

  1180. but remember

  1181. who this

  1182. is and

  1183. what his

  1184. position is

  1185. here.

  1186. It's the

  1187. risen Jesus

  1188. who's leading

  1189. them out.

  1190. The Jesus

  1191. who's conquered

  1192. death.

  1193. The Jesus

  1194. for whom

  1195. death is

  1196. now behind

  1197. him and

  1198. having gained

  1199. that victory

  1200. over death

  1201. and over the

  1202. grave and

  1203. over sin

  1204. and over

  1205. Satan and

  1206. over the

  1207. world,

  1208. here he is

  1209. leading his

  1210. disciples on

  1211. into further

  1212. blessing.

  1213. It's the

  1214. risen Jesus

  1215. that's doing

  1216. this.

  1217. It's the

  1218. risen Jesus,

  1219. the one

  1220. triumphant

  1221. over death

  1222. that actually

  1223. leads his

  1224. people onwards

  1225. through life.

  1226. And how

  1227. important is

  1228. that?

  1229. Because it

  1230. means that

  1231. in him and

  1232. having him as

  1233. your savior,

  1234. as your leader,

  1235. having your

  1236. life willingly

  1237. under his

  1238. direction,

  1239. it means that

  1240. all the things

  1241. that happen to

  1242. you in your

  1243. life, he

  1244. and in him

  1245. you are able

  1246. to actually

  1247. prevail over

  1248. them and

  1249. benefit from

  1250. them and

  1251. gain from

  1252. them, however

  1253. difficult they

  1254. might be.

  1255. Because he's

  1256. in charge of

  1257. them and he's

  1258. in charge of

  1259. your life and

  1260. in charge of

  1261. the turns of

  1262. your circumstances.

  1263. Let me just

  1264. take you to

  1265. Psalm 68.

  1266. You turn

  1267. briefly with me

  1268. to Psalm 68

  1269. in the book

  1270. of Psalms.

  1271. I want to

  1272. pick a few

  1273. verses there

  1274. because this

  1275. is a psalm

  1276. really about

  1277. what we can

  1278. call the

  1279. divine conqueror.

  1280. Words that

  1281. apply very

  1282. much to

  1283. Jesus himself

  1284. as they were

  1285. fulfilled in

  1286. him.

  1287. And it's a

  1288. psalm of

  1289. praise by

  1290. David to

  1291. God.

  1292. But notice

  1293. how it

  1294. begins.

  1295. God shall

  1296. arise, his

  1297. enemies shall

  1298. be scattered,

  1299. and those who

  1300. hate him shall

  1301. flee before

  1302. him.

  1303. As smoke is

  1304. driven, so you

  1305. shall drive

  1306. them away.

  1307. But then if

  1308. you turn to

  1309. verse 7,

  1310. O God,

  1311. when you

  1312. went out

  1313. before your

  1314. people, when

  1315. you marched

  1316. through the

  1317. wilderness, the

  1318. earth quaked, the

  1319. heavens poured

  1320. down rain, before

  1321. God, the one of

  1322. Sinai, before God,

  1323. the God of

  1324. Israel.

  1325. You see, there

  1326. is God going

  1327. out.

  1328. Yes, it's a

  1329. reference especially

  1330. to Sinai, to

  1331. the wilderness, to

  1332. the journey that

  1333. they have, which

  1334. itself is symbolic

  1335. in a sense to a

  1336. measure of the

  1337. journey that we

  1338. have through this

  1339. life.

  1340. And here is

  1341. God going before

  1342. his people.

  1343. What happens when

  1344. God goes before

  1345. his people?

  1346. Well, they are

  1347. victorious in

  1348. him.

  1349. They march after

  1350. him as he

  1351. marches ahead

  1352. of them.

  1353. Go to verse

  1354. 12.

  1355. The kings of

  1356. the armies, they

  1357. flee, they flee.

  1358. The women at

  1359. home divide the

  1360. spoil.

  1361. The conqueror has

  1362. come back from

  1363. his victory, and

  1364. the spoils of

  1365. victory are

  1366. shared out.

  1367. That is Jesus

  1368. having conquered

  1369. the grave.

  1370. The spoils of

  1371. his victory

  1372. shared out to

  1373. his people.

  1374. Verses 18 to

  1375. 19.

  1376. You ascended on

  1377. high, leaving a

  1378. host of captives

  1379. in your train, and

  1380. receiving gifts

  1381. among men, even

  1382. among the

  1383. rebellious, that

  1384. the Lord God

  1385. may dwell there.

  1386. These verses are

  1387. quoted in the New

  1388. Testament in

  1389. regard to Christ's

  1390. resurrection and

  1391. then ascension.

  1392. You ascended on

  1393. high.

  1394. Why did he

  1395. ascend on

  1396. high?

  1397. To receive

  1398. gifts for

  1399. men, the

  1400. gifts especially

  1401. of the Holy

  1402. Spirit and the

  1403. gifts that come

  1404. in God's

  1405. salvation.

  1406. And then

  1407. verse 28, a

  1408. couple more

  1409. verses.

  1410. Summon your

  1411. power, O God,

  1412. the power, O

  1413. God, by which

  1414. you have worked

  1415. for us.

  1416. You see, there's

  1417. David's prayer as

  1418. he comes to

  1419. seek that power

  1420. that God has

  1421. displayed as he

  1422. marched ahead of

  1423. his people and

  1424. gave them

  1425. victory.

  1426. He wants that

  1427. power to be

  1428. displayed, to be

  1429. summoned again for

  1430. his benefit and for

  1431. his people's benefit.

  1432. That's your prayer

  1433. today, surely, as a

  1434. Christian, that

  1435. Christ would summon

  1436. the power by which

  1437. he rose from the

  1438. dead, by which he

  1439. ascended to glory,

  1440. and that that power

  1441. would come into

  1442. your life increasingly

  1443. day by day for

  1444. your benefit.

  1445. And then at the

  1446. end of the psalm,

  1447. in verse 35,

  1448. awesome is God

  1449. from his sanctuary,

  1450. the God of Israel.

1451. He is the one who

  1452. gives power and

  1453. strength to his

  1454. people.

  1455. Blessed be God.

  1456. And where better

1457. do you see that than

  1458. the likes of this

  1459. passage in Luke where

  1460. Jesus leads his

  1461. people out, these

  1462. disciples out to

  1463. Bethany, where under

  1464. his direction he

  1465. comes to lead them

  1466. into blessing, where

  1467. his power is operating

  1468. on their behalf and

  1469. for them and in

  1470. them and through

  1471. them.

  1472. As we begin this

  1473. new year, or as

  1474. it's just newly

  1475. recently begun, is

  1476. this not our

  1477. concern?

  1478. Is this not our

  1479. burden?

1480. Is this not how you

  1481. would like your life

  1482. to be lived?

  1483. To be lived

  1484. willingly led by

  1485. Christ.

  1486. Willingly led so

  1487. that the power of

  1488. Christ comes day by

  1489. day into your life,

  1490. into your experience,

  1491. into your circumstances

  1492. so that through him

  1493. you are able to

  1494. proceed, you are able

  1495. to prevail, you are

1496. able to go on, you

  1497. are able to conquer

1498. the sin in your own

1499. life, you are able to

  1500. conquer temptation,

  1501. you are able to

  1502. glorify him in the

1503. life you live, you are

  1504. able to accept the

  1505. difficulties that are

  1506. as possible in your

  1507. life, the unexpected

  1508. events, the

  1509. illnesses, the

  1510. bereavements, the

  1511. losses, the

  1512. sorrows.

  1513. He led them as

  1514. far as Bethany.

  1515. And secondly, you

  1516. find a life secure

  1517. within Christ's

  1518. intercession.

  1519. Now how do we

  1520. come under his

  1521. direction?

1522. How do we come to

  1523. benefit from his

  1524. leading of his

  1525. people?

1526. How do we come to

  1527. have ourselves

  1528. actually in that

  1529. situation?

  1530. Well, of course, it

  1531. is through trusting

  1532. in him.

  1533. And trusting in him

  1534. means entrusting your

  1535. whole life to him,

  1536. giving your whole life

1537. over to him to be

1538. ruled by him, to be

1539. directed by him, as we

1540. saw in the first point,

  1541. willingly.

  1542. There's such a thing

  1543. nowadays as adaptive

  1544. cruise control in some

  1545. cars.

  1546. And adaptive cruise

  1547. control means that the

1548. car, when you set, it

  1549. automatically keeps the

  1550. right distance between

1551. you and the car in

  1552. front.

1553. So if that one slows

  1554. down, it automatically

1555. slows your car down as

  1556. well.

1557. And if that car in front

1558. of you stops, then the

  1559. system applies the

1560. brakes in your car as

  1561. well, and your car

  1562. comes to a stop.

1563. And it is so, so

  1564. difficult, until you

1565. get used to the system,

1566. to keep your foot off

1567. the brake and just let

  1568. the adaptive cruise

  1569. control take control.

  1570. Because your tendency

1571. is, when you see the

  1572. car in front slowing

  1573. down, your tendency

1574. is, push the brake just

1575. to make sure that your

1576. car is going to stop.

1577. And that cuts out the

  1578. adaptive cruise control.

  1579. And that's, I think, a

  1580. really useful illustration,

  1581. I hope, of the

  1582. challenge and the

  1583. difficulties of handing

  1584. your life over to

  1585. Jesus.

  1586. Because our tendency is

  1587. to want to keep

  1588. control, and at least

  1589. keep a measure of

  1590. control, over our own

  1591. lives.

1592. We just don't have the

  1593. willingness of ourselves

  1594. to give our whole

  1595. life over to Him.

  1596. But that's really what

1597. it has to come to.

  1598. He doesn't want your,

1599. this little bit or that

  1600. little bit of your

  1601. life.

1602. He doesn't want you to

  1603. hand over certain

  1604. aspects of your life,

1605. and then keep control of

  1606. the rest yourself.

1607. That's not going to be of

  1608. any use to us.

1609. You have to hand your

  1610. life over to Him.

  1611. For Him to willingly

  1612. come to lead you

  1613. through the issues of

  1614. life, through death

  1615. itself, and on into

  1616. eternity.

1617. And as He led them as

  1618. far as Bethany, then

  1619. lifting up His hands,

  1620. He blessed them.

  1621. It's a life secure

  1622. within Christ's

  1623. intercession.

1624. Now, why do I say

  1625. intercession?

  1626. Because there's nothing

  1627. specifically mentioned

  1628. there about intercession.

1629. And yet I think that

  1630. the language there,

  1631. lifting up His hands,

  1632. He blessed them,

  1633. that language is

  1634. indicative of the

  1635. language of the Old

  1636. Testament with regard

  1637. to the priestly

  1638. blessing or the high

  1639. priest blessing of His

  1640. people.

  1641. Think of Numbers and

  1642. the words in Numbers

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  1643. chapter 6 from verse

  1644. 22.

  1645. We often sometimes use

  1646. them at baptism.

  1647. The Lord bless you

  1648. and keep you.

1649. The Lord make His face

1650. to shine upon you and

  1651. be gracious to you.

1652. The Lord lift up His

  1653. countenance upon you and

  1654. give you peace, His

  1655. peace.

  1656. They're words of blessing

  1657. in a priestly setting.

  1658. They're words by which

1659. God has said the priest

1660. would put Aaron and his

1661. sons, would put His name

  1662. upon the people of

  1663. Israel, God's name.

  1664. In other words, they

  1665. come under the security

1666. and the safety of God's

  1667. name.

  1668. And where is that

  1669. fulfilled?

  1670. It's fulfilled in Jesus

  1671. and in His intercession.

  1672. Because Jesus is still

1673. active on behalf of His

1674. people in heaven and He's

  1675. active especially in making

  1676. intercession for them and

  1677. bestowing His blessing

  1678. upon them.

1679. You see here, lifting up

  1680. His hands, He blessed

  1681. them.

  1682. They come under the

  1683. blessing under the

  1684. uplifted hands of Jesus.

1685. The blessing of His people

  1686. takes place and continues

  1687. to take place.

1688. And the blessing of Jesus

1689. flows into your life and

1690. my life as a Christian from

  1691. Jesus in heaven.

1692. Now His hands are still

1693. lifted up, as we'll see in a

1694. minute, in that sense of

  1695. still blessing His people

  1696. actively as their high

  1697. priest.

  1698. Everything you find in

1699. number six and from verse

  1700. twenty-two is fulfilled.

1701. All of these elements that

  1702. were mentioned in these

  1703. verses are actually

  1704. fulfilled in the blessing

1705. of Christ as the high

  1706. priest of His people.

  1707. And what is the

  1708. intercession of Christ

  1709. really?

  1710. It's a big subject

  1711. worthy of much more

1712. study than I can give it

1713. in a couple of minutes.

1714. What is the intercession of

  1715. Jesus?

  1716. What does intercession

  1717. mean?

  1718. What does intercession mean?

1719. Is it just that Jesus is

  1720. praying for His people,

1721. just as you would imagine

1722. Him praying for His people

1723. here while He was on earth

  1724. or ourselves praying for

  1725. God's blessing?

  1726. Well, I'm not saying there's

1727. not that element in it,

1728. but the intercession of Jesus

  1729. is basically the presenting

1730. of Himself and His finished

1731. work of atonement, His death

  1732. that fulfilled all that

1733. was necessary for His people,

1734. for their sins to be forgiven,

  1735. the presenting of that

  1736. to God the Father.

1737. I remember when people came

1738. to arrest Jesus in the garden,

  1739. that Jesus said something

  1740. specific at that point.

1741. If it is I you are seeking,

1742. if it's me you are seeking,

  1743. let these,

  1744. He mentioned the disciples,

1745. let these go their way.

  1746. And you know,

1747. you can take that text really

  1748. and say that's applicable

1749. to the intercession of Jesus

1750. because He took what we deserved

1751. in the death that He died,

1752. in enduring the wrath of God

1753. which we were liable to

  1754. for our sins.

1755. And Jesus is really the one

1756. who in Himself, as it were,

  1757. fulfills that great statement

  1758. that He spoke.

1759. If it is me that you're seeking,

  1760. since I'm the one you're seeking,

1761. let these go their way.

  1762. I'll take their place.

  1763. I'll take the penalty.

  1764. I'll take what's due to them

1765. and they can go free.

  1766. Now you see,

  1767. that's within Christ's intercession.

  1768. That's what's happening.

  1769. Because God the Father,

1770. as God the Father looks upon God,

  1771. the Son beside Him,

1772. the One who entered this world

1773. and died and rose from the dead

1774. and was exalted to glory,

1775. as God the Father looks upon Him

1776. and sees His people in Him,

1777. He regards them as fully acceptable

  1778. to Him in Jesus.

1779. And Christ's presenting of the case

  1780. for their security,

  1781. for their everlasting security,

1782. for their forgiveness of sins to be,

1783. His forgiveness of their sins to continue.

  1784. It's all in Jesus.

1785. And His intercession for them

  1786. is an intercession

  1787. that keeps presenting

1788. the worth of His own death,

1789. the merit of His own death,

1790. the power of His own death,

1791. the achievement of His own death.

1792. And that goes on constantly

  1793. in heaven

  1794. for His people.

  1795. And

  1796. you notice this,

  1797. while He blessed them,

1798. He was parted from them

1799. and was carried up into heaven.

  1800. You see there,

  1801. Luke is really recording

1802. the thing exactly as it happened.

  1803. While

  1804. He was blessing them,

1805. He was parted from them.

  1806. In other words,

1807. the last thing they saw of Jesus

  1808. physically in this world

1809. was Him with His hands uplifted

1810. being carried up into heaven.

1811. It wasn't that they saw Him

  1812. lifting His hands

  1813. and blessing them

  1814. and pronouncing a blessing

1815. and then His hands went down

1816. and then He was lifted up.

1817. He was still in the act

  1818. of blessing them

  1819. as He left them.

1820. He was still in the act

  1821. of pronouncing

  1822. that priestly blessing

  1823. from Himself

  1824. that He was actually

1825. involved in at the time.

1826. and it was like that

1827. that He was taken into heaven.

  1828. He was actually still

1829. in the act of blessing.

  1830. In other words,

  1831. their conclusion from that

  1832. and our conclusion

  1833. as we read that

  1834. is that the blessing

  1835. was going to continue.

1836. As He went into heaven,

1837. He continued to bless them.

  1838. As He entered heaven,

1839. He continued to bless them.

1840. As He sat at the right hand of God,

1841. He continued to bless them.

  1842. And we still have

  1843. Christ's priestly blessing

  1844. as our privilege

  1845. as Christians today.

1846. And if you are in Him today

1847. and if you've embraced Him

  1848. and if your life

1849. is willingly led by Him,

  1850. this is actually

  1851. what's happening

  1852. on your behalf.

  1853. This is what's happening

  1854. in heaven

  1855. through the intercession

  1856. of Jesus Himself.

1857. His hands, as it were,

1858. are still raised over you,

  1859. pronouncing you blessed,

  1860. pronouncing you

  1861. in favor with God.

1862. That's where our security lies.

  1863. You remember how Hebrews,

1864. that book in the New Testament

  1865. that speaks so much

  1866. about Christ's high priesthood,

  1867. how in chapter 7,

  1868. among many other things,

  1869. it says this,

  1870. from verse 23,

  1871. contrasting Jesus

  1872. with the former priests

  1873. of the Old Testament,

  1874. the former priests

  1875. were many in number

  1876. because they were prevented

  1877. by death

  1878. from continuing

  1879. in office,

  1880. but He holds

  1881. His priesthood

  1882. permanently

  1883. because He

  1884. continues

  1885. forever.

  1886. Consequently,

1887. He is able to save

  1888. to the uttermost

  1889. those who draw near

  1890. to God

  1891. through Him

  1892. since He always lives

  1893. to make

  1894. intercession

  1895. for them.

1896. It is the Hebrews version,

  1897. if you like,

1898. of what we're saying here

  1899. from Luke's Gospel.

  1900. The continuing life

  1901. of Jesus

  1902. for His people

  1903. is a life

  1904. of continuing

  1905. blessing for them

  1906. under His priesthood,

  1907. under His direction,

  1908. under His own intercession.

  1909. A life willing

1910. to be led by Christ,

  1911. a life secure

  1912. within Christ's intercession,

  1913. a life rejoicing

  1914. in worshiping Christ.

  1915. You notice how

  1916. the passage ends.

  1917. They worshipped Him

  1918. and returned

  1919. to Jerusalem

  1920. with great joy

  1921. and were continually

  1922. in the temple

  1923. blessing God.

  1924. They were not downcast

  1925. that He had left,

  1926. that He had disappeared

  1927. from sight.

  1928. They were not afraid

  1929. that there were just

  1930. such a few people

  1931. surrounded by

  1932. so many opponents.

  1933. They returned

  1934. with great joy.

  1935. Here's the question

  1936. for you

  1937. and for me today.

  1938. Am I joyful

  1939. in the worship

  1940. of God?

  1941. Am I joyful

  1942. in my faith

  1943. in my following

  1944. of Christ?

  1945. Am I joyful

  1946. in my being led

  1947. by Him?

  1948. Do I know

  1949. this joy

  1950. as something

1951. not only that I want

1952. to find in my life

1953. but I want to see

  1954. increased in my life?

  1955. They returned

  1956. with great joy,

  1957. not just joy

  1958. but great joy.

  1959. They were rejoicing

  1960. in worshiping Christ.

  1961. Is our worship

  1962. a joyful worship?

  1963. If it is,

  1964. do we want

  1965. that joyful worship

  1966. to spill over

  1967. that others

1968. will experience it as well?

  1969. Surely we do.

  1970. And let's pray

  1971. that as we go

  1972. through this year

  1973. and seek to follow

  1974. the leadership

  1975. of Christ Himself

  1976. that more and more

  1977. we will actually

  1978. enjoy worshiping Him.

  1979. That we will rejoice

  1980. in worshiping Him.

  1981. That we'll have

  1982. this great joy

  1983. that these disciples

  1984. had as they

  1985. worshiped Him

  1986. and as they

  1987. returned to Jerusalem

  1988. with great joy.

  1989. I mean being led

  1990. by the risen Jesus

  1991. and being safe

  1992. and secure

  1993. under the intercession

  1994. of the risen

  1995. exalted Jesus.

  1996. Surely that should be

1997. the source of our joy

1998. that our life is lived

  1999. under His direction

  2000. and safely and securely

  2001. under His intercession.

2002. What is there to fear?

2003. Why should we be afraid

  2004. of the world?

2005. Why should we be afraid

2006. of the world seeing us

  2007. rejoicing in Christ?

  2008. Of course we shouldn't.

  2009. And isn't it today

  2010. our privilege

2011. not only to worship Jesus

2012. but to worship Him joyfully.

  2013. To express our joy

  2014. through reading

  2015. the Word of God.

  2016. Through hearing the Word

  2017. preached

  2018. and through preaching it.

  2019. And to especially express

  2020. that in prayer

  2021. and in the singing

  2022. of His praises

2023. that we will do it

2024. in a way that shows

  2025. that we are joyful

  2026. in worshiping God

  2027. in worshiping the Savior.

  2028. And you see

  2029. continually

2030. they were in the temple

  2031. blessing God.

2032. And what's that saying to us?

  2033. It's saying to us

  2034. that there they were

  2035. having seen Jesus

  2036. having been spoken to

  2037. by Jesus

  2038. having been blessed

  2039. by Jesus

  2040. having seen Him

  2041. departing with His hands

  2042. and blessings

  2043. still lifted over them.

  2044. they returned

  2045. with great joy

  2046. and in that rejoicing

  2047. they were continually

  2048. in the temple.

  2049. In other words

  2050. they were committed

  2051. they were committed

  2052. to His service

  2053. committed to His worship

  2054. to continue

  2055. with His worship.

  2056. Luke

  2057. has a volume 2

  2058. of the account

  2059. of Jesus' life.

  2060. And volume 2

  2061. of Luke's account

2062. is in the book of Acts.

  2063. The book of Acts

  2064. is a continuation

  2065. really of the story

  2066. of Jesus

  2067. as told by Luke.

  2068. And it's still

  2069. the story of Jesus

  2070. even though you might

2071. think of the book of Acts

  2072. as to do primarily

  2073. as it is with

  2074. the church

  2075. and the increase

  2076. of the church

2077. and the way the gospel

  2078. through the church

  2079. of the time

  2080. then spread out

  2081. into the Gentile world.

  2082. Yes, but it's still

  2083. the story of Jesus.

  2084. He is the one

  2085. who through His blessing

  2086. and His blessing

  2087. of the gospel

  2088. is actually behind

  2089. that great increase

  2090. in the number

  2091. of believers

  2092. and in the effectiveness

  2093. of the gospel

  2094. through them.

  2095. And so volume 2

  2096. of Luke's account

  2097. continues

  2098. the story of Jesus.

2099. The story of the risen Christ.

  2100. The Christ who died

  2101. and rose again

  2102. and was taken up

  2103. to glory.

  2104. And in that gospel

  2105. in the Acts

  2106. rather

  2107. chapter 1

  2108. and verse 8

  2109. He said to them

2110. just before He left them

  2111. and again

  2112. He's saying to them

  2113. that they were going

  2114. to be His witnesses

  2115. in that local area

  2116. Samaria, Jerusalem

  2117. and to the ends

  2118. of the earth.

2119. That means you and I

2120. that we are to be

  2121. the witnesses

  2122. for Jesus

2123. who are led by Him

  2124. in our lives

  2125. who are secure

  2126. within His intercession

  2127. who rejoice

  2128. in worshiping Him

  2129. and that we communicate

  2130. that to the world

  2131. in which we live.

  2132. That's why we exist

  2133. in this world

  2134. as Christians

  2135. as believers

  2136. in Christ

  2137. not only to rejoice

  2138. in Him

  2139. and to enjoy Him

  2140. for ourselves

  2141. but to commend Him

2142. and to speak of Him

  2143. and to present Him

  2144. to the world

  2145. around us

  2146. to the ends

  2147. of the earth.

  2148. That is now

  2149. our task.

  2150. So as this year

  2151. goes by

  2152. may we be

  2153. more and more

  2154. willing to be led

  2155. by Jesus.

  2156. May we have

  2157. more and more

  2158. comfort from knowing

  2159. of a life secure

  2160. under the intercession

  2161. of Jesus.

  2162. And may we be

  2163. more and more

  2164. a people

  2165. rejoicing

  2166. and worshipping

  2167. Jesus

  2168. and seeking

  2169. to make Him known

  2170. even to the ends

  2171. of the earth.

  2172. after all

  2173. we have

  2174. His own

  2175. other

  2176. other words

  2177. in the other

  2178. Gospel of Matthew

  2179. we have His

  2180. words

  2181. with which

  2182. the Gospel of Matthew

  2183. closes

  2184. having given

  2185. direction

  2186. and command

  2187. to make disciples

  2188. of all nations

  2189. given that He

  2190. has been given

  2191. all authority

  2192. in heaven and earth

  2193. go and make

  2194. disciples

  2195. of all nations.

  2196. He makes

  2197. the converts

  2198. we make

  2199. the disciples.

  2200. Discipleship

  2201. is part of

  2202. the way in which

  2203. the church's

  2204. evangelism

  2205. is carried out

  2206. making of

  2207. disciples.

  2208. It's not our

  2209. business

  2210. or our ability

  2211. to convert

  2212. people

  2213. but it is our

  2214. privilege and our

  2215. business to make

  2216. disciples

  2217. to gather

  2218. people

  2219. under the

  2220. headship of

  2221. Christ.

  2222. And what did He

  2223. say?

  2224. How did He finish?

  2225. what is it

  2226. especially that

  2227. encourages us

  2228. more than anything

  2229. else?

  2230. Lo,

  2231. behold,

  2232. I am with

  2233. you

  2234. to the end

  2235. of the age.

  2236. The Jesus

  2237. who leads

  2238. His people,

  2239. the Jesus

  2240. whose intercession

  2241. brings security

  2242. to His people,

  2243. the Jesus

  2244. who is worshipped

  2245. joyfully by His

  2246. people,

  2247. is the Jesus

  2248. who assures

  2249. them,

  2250. I am with

  2251. you.

  2252. And when He

  2253. is with you,

  2254. it doesn't

  2255. matter who's

  2256. against you,

  2257. who's seeing

  2258. you,

  2259. who's disagreeing

  2260. with you,

  2261. if He is

  2262. with you,

  2263. it is well

  2264. with your

  2265. soul.

  2266. Let's pray.

  2267. eternal God,

  2268. we give

  2269. thanks today

  2270. for the

  2271. gospel.

  2272. We give

  2273. thanks for

  2274. that gospel

  2275. that brings

  2276. to us

  2277. such a

  2278. message of

  2279. hope.

  2280. We bless

  2281. you that at

  2282. the beginning

  2283. of this

  2284. new year,

  2285. we are

  2286. able,

  2287. through your

  2288. own word,

  2289. to realize

  2290. the importance

  2291. of being led

  2292. by you.

  2293. Lord,

  2294. we pray

  2295. for willing

  2296. hearts.

  2297. We pray

  2298. for hearts

  2299. that will be

  2300. willing to

  2301. serve you,

  2302. to worship

  2303. you,

  2304. to be

  2305. witnesses

  2306. to you,

  2307. to be led

  2308. by you,

  2309. to be safe

  2310. under your

  2311. own intercession.

  2312. Help us,

  2313. Lord,

  2314. to be glad

  2315. in you,

  2316. and help us

  2317. to commend

  2318. you to the

  2319. world around

  2320. us as the

  2321. only one in

  2322. whom we can

  2323. find the

  2324. satisfaction for

  2325. which you

  2326. created us.

  2327. So hear us,

  2328. we pray now,

  2329. and continue

  2330. with us

  2331. throughout this

  2332. day,

  2333. pardoning our

  2334. sin and

  2335. accepting us

  2336. for Jesus'

  2337. sake.

  2338. Amen.

  2339. Well,

  2340. our final

  2341. psalm is

  2342. Psalm 68,

  2343. psalm we

  2344. quoted from,

  2345. read part of

  2346. earlier.

  2347. Psalm 68,

    Psalms 68:18–20

  2348. verses 18 to

  2349. 20,

  2350. on page 303,

  2351. so it's in the

  2352. Scottish Psalter,

  2353. singing to

  2354. Tune Sheffield,

  2355. Thou hast,

  2356. O Lord,

  2357. most glorious,

  2358. ascended up on

  2359. high,

  2360. and in triumph

  2361. victorious led

  2362. captive

  2363. captivity.

  2364. Thou hast

  2365. received gifts

  2366. for men,

  2367. for such as

  2368. did rebel,

  2369. yea,

  2370. even for

  2371. them,

  2372. that God

  2373. the Lord

  2374. in midst

  2375. of them

  2376. might dwell.

  2377. Psalm 68,

    Psalms 68:18–20

  2378. verses 18 to

  2379. 20.

  2380. Amen.

  2381. Thou hast,

  2382. O Lord,

  2383. most glorious,

  2384. ascended upon

  2385. high,

  2386. and in triumph

  2387. victorious led,

  2388. captive,

  2389. captivity.

  2390. Thou hast

  2391. received gifts

  2392. for men,

  2393. for such as

  2394. did rebel,

  2395. yea,

  2396. yea,

  2397. in for them

  2398. that God

  2399. the Lord

  2400. in midst

  2401. of them

  2402. might dwell.

  2403. Blessed

  2404. be the

  2405. Lord

  2406. who is

  2407. to us

  2408. of our

  2409. salvation

  2410. God,

  2411. who

  2412. daily

  2413. with

  2414. its

  2415. benefits

  2416. as

  2417. plenteously

  2418. doth

  2419. Lord.

  2420. He

  2421. of

  2422. salvation

  2423. is

  2424. our God

  2425. who is

  2426. our God

  2427. most

  2428. strong,

  2429. and

  2430. unto

  2431. God

  2432. the

  2433. Lord

  2434. from

  2435. death

  2436. he

  2437. is

  2438. used

  2439. to

  2440. belong.

  2441. After the

  2442. benediction,

  2443. I'll go to

  2444. the main

  2445. door.

  2446. Now may

  2447. the grace

  2448. of the

  2449. Lord

  2450. Jesus

  2451. Christ,

  2452. the love

  2453. of God

  2454. the Father,

  2455. and the

  2456. communion

  2457. of the

  2458. Holy Spirit

  2459. be with

  2460. you now

  2461. and ever

  2462. more.

  2463. Amen.

  2464. of

  2465. the

  2466. el

  2467. Lord

  2468. the

  2469. loving

  2470. of

  2471. the

  2472. son

  2473. of

  2474. the

  2475. more.

  2476. Thank you.
