  1. Psalm 71.

  2. And over the next few weeks I hope to make our way through Psalm 71.

  3. Tonight we'll give our attention to the first section up to verse mark 11.

  4. Psalm 71 is a special psalm to many of us.

  5. I appreciate it as we read through it there.

  6. The words are solemn.

  7. The words are thoughtful.

  8. And it is thought provoking for us to come and read and consider what the psalmist is saying in it.

  9. As we read through it we can pick up that the psalmist experiences this vicious attack from the devil.

  10. The psalmist is in this most difficult of places.

  11. And he feels like he is also vulnerable.

  12. And yet as we go through it and we follow with his experience we find glimpses where he has joy.

  13. And he praises the God and his Lord.

  14. And as we look through this psalm together there is faith that undergirds it.

  15. There is his own faith and trust in his Lord.

  16. And there is the Lord's faithfulness to his people and to the psalmist.

  17. Now this psalm it is debated whether David wrote it.

  18. David wrote the majority of the psalms.

  19. But I don't think they are not too sure whether this is entirely his work.

  20. There are parts from it.

  21. From other psalms in its construction.

  22. But regardless of who wrote it.

  23. While we read through it we can understand that it is an elderly person that is writing it.

  24. Or someone who is in old age.

  25. If you go to verse 9.

  26. It says there do not cast me off in the time of old age.

  27. If you go to verse 18.

  28. It is more of that.

  29. So even to old age and grey hair.

  30. O God do not forsake me.

  31. This believer.

  32. Psalmist.

  33. Writer.

  34. He has walked the narrow path.

  35. He has followed the Christian way for many years.

  36. But if you look at the title of the psalm.

  37. If you have the ESV version.

  38. It will have a title to it.

  39. It says forsake me not when my strength is spent.

  40. The psalmist.

  41. All his strength has gone.

  42. There is nothing left to give.

  43. He is running on empty.

  44. As it were.

  45. The faithful believer is facing the greatest trials.

  46. And afflictions of his life.

  47. And personal battles.

  48. And through this psalm.

  49. We are led into his experience.

  50. Of what he is going through.

  51. When he is just holding on.

  52. When he says.

  53. I am beat.

  54. But I am still.

  55. Holding on.

  56. To my Lord.

  57. He still has faith.

  58. In his Lord.

  59. And this is a.

  60. Great lament.

  61. Of the psalmist.

  62. He cries out to God.

  63. With the sorrows of his soul.

  64. And we can imagine.

  65. Like a crying child.

  66. They cry out.

  67. It is as simple as this.

  68. Mommy or daddy.

  69. They make that cry.

  70. And.

  71. No one else will do.

  72. Until they are comforted.

  73. By.

  74. Their mother.

  75. Or their father.

  76. Until they feel that hand.

  77. Until they hear.

  78. That voice.

  79. Comforting it.

  80. And as we go through our lives.

  81. We are faced with.

  82. So many different challenges.

  83. And afflictions.

  84. Tribulations.

  85. That's a reality.

  86. Of our lives.

  87. And we.

  88. Often cry.

  89. To God.

  90. Because we don't know what to do.

  91. Cry in the anguish.

  92. Of our souls.

  93. And we turn.

  94. Like the psalmist here.

  95. Oh Lord.

  96. And.

  97. I would be a fool.

  98. If I was.

  99. To say that.

  100. If you became a Christian.

  101. Or if you are a Christian.

  102. Your.

  103. Your life will be.

  104. Without tests.

  105. And trials.

  106. That would be a lie.

  107. For often the Christian.

  108. Is afflicted.

  109. In.

  110. Many.

  111. And.

  112. Greater ways.

  113. As.

  114. Those who do not believe.

  115. In the Lord.

  116. But they have.

  117. Someone to go with them.

  118. Through it.

  119. And to lead them through it.

  120. They have the good shepherd.

  121. To guide them through it.

  122. Even if it is the valley.

  123. Of the shadow of death.

  124. There are times.

  125. In our lives.

  126. When we.

  127. We make that great call.

  128. Heavenward.

  129. To our Lord.

  130. And our God.

  131. But there are times also.

  132. Where we confess.

  133. That we.

  134. We don't make that call.

  135. And we.

  136. We search for other.

  137. Comforters.

  138. Which fail us.

  139. And as we.

  140. Look at the psalm.

  141. And generally.

  142. As you study the psalms.

  143. And look through them.

  144. They say that the main point.

  145. Is within the middle of the psalm.

  146. The central idea.

  147. Is found.

  148. In the middle.

  149. And you look at psalm 71.

  150. You have a.

  151. Distinct section there.

  152. From verse mark 12.

  153. To verse mark 16.

  154. On either side.

  155. Are small.

  156. Two.

  157. Smaller.

  158. Paragraphs.

  159. So.

  160. From verse 12.

  161. To 16.

  162. It's the center.

  163. Of the psalm.

  164. And if you go to the center.

  165. Of the center.

  166. Of that section.

  167. At verse 14.

  168. It says.

  169. But I will hope.

  170. Continually.

  171. And will praise you.

  172. Yet.

  173. More and more.

  174. The psalmist.

  175. Faith.

  176. Continuing.

  177. With.

  178. His Lord.

  179. And his God.

  180. Regardless.

  181. Of what the situation is.

  182. Of the experience.

  183. Of his life.

  184. Regardless.

  185. Of how he feels.

  186. He is.

  187. Holding on.

  188. To his.

  189. Only hope.

  190. And his.

  191. Only trust.

  192. To go.

  193. With God.

  194. So.

  195. As we consider this.

  196. Short section.

  197. Here.

  198. Down to verse mark 11.

  199. There's.

  200. Three.

  201. Distinct.

  202. Focuses.

  203. That the psalmist.

  204. Has.

  205. He.

  206. He.

  207. Firstly.

  208. Has a focus.

  209. On God.

  210. He looks.

  211. Towards God.

  212. And rightly so.

  213. Second look.

  214. That he has.

  215. Is he.

  216. He looks.

  217. He looks.

  218. At himself.

  219. He looks.

  220. Inwardly.

  221. At himself.

  222. And he also.

  223. Has a look.

  224. Outwardly.

  225. At those.

  226. Who are around him.

  227. And the situation.

  228. That he is in.

  229. And.

  230. Elements of that.

  231. Overlap.

  232. Throughout the psalm.

  233. But hopefully.

  234. You can.

  235. You can.

  236. Grasp.

  237. These ideas.

  238. The three.

  239. The three looks.

  240. That he has.

  241. Looks to God.

  242. He looks.

  243. Within himself.

  244. And he looks.

  245. Around.

  246. At the.

  247. Situation.

  248. That he is in.

  249. And.

  250. We'll give.

  251. Most of our attention.

  252. To the most important.

  253. Of those looks.

  254. And that is.

  255. The look that he has.

  256. To his God.

  257. And.

  258. To his Lord.

  259. As we look.

  260. At the beginning.

  261. Of the psalm.

  262. Straight away.

  263. His focus.

  264. Is.

  265. In that direction.

  266. In you.

  267. Oh Lord.

  268. I do.

  269. Take refuge.

  270. And you can.

  271. Feel.

  272. The pleading.

  273. Of the psalmist.

  274. Beginning.

  275. There.

  276. His cry.

  277. Oh Lord.

  278. That.

  279. His Lord.

  280. Is his refuge.

  281. In the time.

  282. That he is experiencing.

  283. There is no other.

  284. Safety for him.

  285. There is no other.

  286. Refuge for him.

  287. There is no other.

  288. Shelter for him.

  289. To go to.

  290. Where he will find.

  291. Protection.

  292. But in his.

  293. Lord.

  294. I look.

  295. To you Lord.

  296. You are the one.

  297. That will keep me.

  298. The keeper.

  299. Of my soul.

  300. I too.

  301. The Lord.

  302. Will look.

  303. For aid.

  304. As we sung.

  305. In Psalm.

  306. One.

  307. Two.

  308. One.

  309. He's got that.

  310. Look.

  311. Heavenward.

  312. To the Lord.

  313. That will hold him.

  314. And it says.

  315. In verse.

  316. One.

  317. Let me never.

  318. Be put.

  319. To shame.

  320. So that he will have.

  321. No shame.

  322. In that cry.

  323. As he looks.

  324. Heavenly.

  325. Heavenward.

  326. To God.

  327. There's no shame.

  328. In his hope.

  329. In his weight.

  330. In his trust.

  331. In this Lord.

  332. In this God.

  333. Other translations.

  334. Will have this.

  335. That he.

  336. That he.

  337. Would never.

  338. Be put.

  339. To confusion.

  340. Rather than shame.

  341. That he would never be.

  342. Completely.

  343. Bewildered.

  344. As it were.

  345. He pleads.

  346. That his Lord.

  347. Would ever.

  348. Be faithful.

  349. To him.

  350. And his refuge.

  351. In him.

  352. And his trust.

  353. In him.

  354. Would not be shattered.

  355. Or brought.

  356. Into question.

  357. You can imagine.

  358. If you were to.

  359. Set up a business.

  360. You'd have all your hopes.

  361. In this business.

  362. And you would make your plans.

  363. For this business.

  364. And you would have your ideas.

  365. And you would put it into motion.

  366. You'd have shared this with people.

  367. And people would have seen you.

  368. Trying.

  369. To form this business.

  370. Set it up.

  371. Get it running.

  372. Employ people.

  373. And on paper.

  374. It all looks like it'll work.

  375. And you've put everything into it.

  376. All your hopes.

  377. Are in this business.

  378. But then it falls flat.

  379. In its face.

  380. The business fails.

  381. And fails you.

  382. You have an element of shame.

  383. For having trusted.

  384. In your plans.

  385. Having trusted.

  386. In this business.

  387. You have an element of confusion.

  388. Because you can't figure out.

  389. What went wrong on paper.

  390. It should have worked.

  391. But it didn't.

  392. The shame and confusion.

  393. In these things.

  394. But business.

  395. Is so uncertain.

  396. The psalmist.

  397. The psalmist.

  398. Is crying.

  399. To his lord.

  400. Who is certain.

  401. So that he would not.

  402. Be put to shame.

  403. He's trusting.

  404. In his lord.

  405. That when he.

  406. Expresses his hope.

  407. And trust.

  408. It will not fail.

  409. Because the lord.

  410. Will never fail.

  411. His people.

  412. And he knows.

  413. He will never be put to shame.

  414. By trusting.

  415. By trusting.

  416. By trusting.

  417. In his lord.

  418. Now as I said.

  419. Confusion may.

  420. Leave us with questions.

  421. And.

  422. We can't say that.

  423. If we come to.

  424. The lord.

  425. And we cry to the lord.

  426. That we'll never have.

  427. Questions.

  428. We'll never.

  429. Be left.

  430. Bewildered at times.

  431. At what.

  432. At what.

  433. The lord is doing.

  434. There's.

  435. Situations.

  436. That leave us.

  437. Confused.

  438. And.

  439. Although the situation.

  440. Leaves us confused.

  441. Our hope.

  442. And our faith.

  443. Should never have.

  444. Confusion.

  445. We look to god.

  446. Our faith.

  447. Is in the god.

  448. Who has.

  449. Decreed all things.

  450. That he works.

  451. All things.

  452. For good.

  453. Mysteriously.

  454. That's beyond.

  455. Our understanding.

  456. Beyond what we can.

  457. Grasp.

  458. But our faith.

  459. Is to.

  460. Trust.

  461. In that god.

  462. Who works.

  463. All things.

  464. For good.

  465. To have faith.

  466. In that god.

  467. Who will not.

  468. Put us to shame.

  469. And not leave us.

  470. Confused.

  471. Because he has.

  472. Foreordained.

  473. All things.

  474. Our lord.

  475. Will not.

  476. Fail us.

  477. And though.

  478. There are days.

  479. Where it may feel like shame.

  480. And the honesty of our hearts.

  481. For trusting in the lord.

  482. When we go out.

  483. And live.

  484. And live.

  485. A Christian life.

  486. In this world.

  487. There may be an element.

  488. Of shame.

  489. Because we don't have the answers.

  490. We like.

  491. To give people.

  492. We don't.

  493. Feel.

  494. Like god.

  495. Like god.

  496. So close to us.

  497. As we would desire.

  498. But.

  499. The lord.

  500. Will not.

  501. Fail us.

  502. The lord.

  503. Who works.

  504. All things for good.

  505. All things for good.

  506. In his time.

  507. Will not bring shame.

  508. To the people.

  509. Who trust in him.

  510. The lord.

  511. Will honor.

  512. His people in time.

  513. Who are faithful.

  514. To him.

  515. And trust in him.

  516. And with this.

  517. Focus.

  518. On god.

  519. That the psalmist has.

  520. He looks towards.

  521. This.

  522. His lord.

  523. And he.

  524. It's almost as if he can't help.

  525. But feel.

  526. His own failures.

  527. As we come before the holiness of god.

  528. And we see god.

  529. Clear.

  530. And we look upon him.

  531. I say I confessed.

  532. When he saw god.

  533. I am a man of unclean lips.

  534. He sees his own failures.

  535. And we acknowledge them.

  536. As we come.

  537. We confess our sins.

  538. To our lord.

  539. The psalmist knows.

  540. That.

  541. There's no goodness.

  542. Of him.

  543. Worth rescue.

  544. In your righteousness.

  545. Deliver me.

  546. And rescue me.

  547. In your righteousness.

  548. The lord.

  549. Who is righteous.

  550. In all things.

  551. And he looks at himself.

  552. And he says.

  553. I am so unrighteous.

  554. I do not deserve.

  555. To be rescued.

  556. But.

  557. I hold fast.

  558. To you.

  559. My lord.

  560. And you.

  561. Know.

  562. That I have not.

  563. Chased after other gods.

  564. You know.

  565. I have held fast.

  566. To your word.

  567. And I've been faithful.

  568. To you.

  569. And in.

  570. Your righteousness.

  571. Deliver.

  572. Me.

  573. Hear.

  574. Hear.

  575. My cry.

  576. Incline.

  577. Your ear.

  578. To me.

  579. And save.

  580. Me.

  581. Me.

  582. He knew.

  583. As he.

  584. He looks himself.

  585. His.

  586. Sins leave him.

  587. Staying.

  588. Before his god.

  589. And he wants god.

  590. To hear.

  591. The.

  592. Sorrows.

  593. Of his soul.

  594. The anxieties.

  595. Of his soul.

  596. Incline.

  597. Your ear.

  598. To hear.

  599. Me.

  600. And save.

  601. Me.

  602. Remember.

  603. The psalmist.

  604. It is.

  605. All his strength.

  606. Is gone.

  607. He's got nothing.

  608. Left to give.

  609. He knows.

  610. He's got nothing.

  611. Worth.

  612. Rescue.

  613. Being.

  614. Of himself.

  615. And he's calling.

  616. Out to god.

  617. Lord.

  618. In your.

  619. Righteousness.

  620. Rescue.

  621. Me.

  622. Hear.

  623. Me.

  624. And climb.

  625. Your ear.

  626. To hear.

  627. The agonies.

  628. Of my heart.

  629. And save.

  630. Me.

  631. And it's often.

  632. Like that.

  633. When we are.

  634. So perplexed.

  635. At times.

  636. We don't have.

  637. The answers.

  638. It is often.

  639. Just that.

  640. Short.

  641. And effective.

  642. Prayer.

  643. That says.

  644. Save.

  645. And it's a prayer.

  646. That I'm sure.

  647. Many of us.

  648. Have prayed.

  649. In years.

  650. Gone by.

  651. And often.

  652. A prayer.

  653. That comes back.

  654. To us.

  655. At difficult times.

  656. In our lives.

  657. We don't know what to say.

  658. There's no words.

  659. To express it.

  660. But just.

  661. Oh Lord.

  662. Save me.

  663. We run.

  664. To our Lord.

  665. We call on him.

  666. And there's a beautiful.

  667. Version.

  668. Isaiah.

  669. 58.

  670. Verse 9.

  671. Thou shalt cry.

  672. And he shalt say.

  673. Here I am.

  674. Thou shalt cry.

  675. And he shalt say.

  676. Here.

  677. I am.

  678. The Lord.

  679. The Lord.

  680. Who hears.

  681. The cries.

  682. Of his people.

  683. And saves them.

  684. He hears that cry.

  685. Of salvation.

  686. And the psalmist.

  687. Has his salvation.

  688. Founded.

  689. In his Lord.

  690. In verse 3.

  691. Be a rock.

  692. Of refuge.

  693. To which I may.

  694. Continually come.

  695. You have given.

  696. The command.

  697. To save me.

  698. You are.

  699. My rock.

  700. And my refuge.

  701. This place is.

  702. Immovable.

  703. It is like this.

  704. Huge.

  705. Rock.

  706. That he can come.

  707. And.

  708. Clamber.

  709. Under.

  710. And every time.

  711. He comes.

  712. To that place.

  713. He will find.

  714. Safety.

  715. Security.

  716. It is a.

  717. Impenetrable.

  718. Wall.

  719. Of defense.

  720. A fortress.

  721. To him.

  722. That he can come.

  723. To this place.

  724. And know.

  725. That it is a place.

  726. Where it's.

  727. Does not change.

  728. It is sure.

  729. It is strong.

  730. And it will always.

  731. Be there.

  732. But the assurance.

  733. He has.

  734. In coming.

  735. To this place.

  736. Is found.

  737. In God's word.

  738. He continues.

  739. To come.

  740. You have given.

  741. The command.

  742. To save me.

  743. See.

  744. He finds.

  745. His assurance.

  746. In God's word.

  747. He's reasoned.

  748. He's calling on his God.

  749. And he comes back.

  750. To God's word.

  751. And what the Lord.

  752. Has commanded.

  753. You have given.

  754. The command.

  755. To save me.

  756. And when God.

  757. Speaks.

  758. A command.

  759. It is.

  760. Equates.

  761. To a promise.

  762. What the Lord.

  763. Says.

  764. What he speaks.

  765. And it shall come.

  766. To be.

  767. And whoever.

  768. Shall call.

  769. Upon the name.

  770. Of the Lord.

  771. Shall be saved.

  772. A.

  773. W.

  774. Pink.

  775. Says.

  776. It is.

  777. Because.

  778. God.

  779. Has promised.

  780. A certain.

  781. Thing.

  782. That we can.

  783. Ask.

  784. Of them.

  785. With full assurance.

  786. Of faith.

  787. It is.

  788. Because.

  789. God.

  790. Has promised.

  791. A certain.

  792. Thing.

  793. In his word.

  794. The promises.

  795. Are there.

  796. That we can.

  797. Ask.

  798. Of them.

  799. With full assurance.

  800. Of faith.

  801. We can.

  802. Ask.

  803. Of these.

  804. Things.

  805. That are.

  806. In his word.

  807. That if he.

  808. Shall save you.

  809. And you call upon him.

  810. From the depths.

  811. Of your heart.

  812. He will hear you.

  813. And answer you.

  814. And we have.

  815. Find the assurance.

  816. In his given.

  817. Commandments.

  818. Given.

  819. To us.

  820. That he will save us.

  821. And hear us.

  822. When we.

  823. Cry out.

  824. To him.

  825. But our.

  826. Rock.

  827. And our.

  828. Refuge.

  829. Is the Lord.

  830. Jesus Christ.

  831. He is the one.

  832. That we.

  833. Come to.

  834. And cry to.

  835. He is the one.

  836. That takes out.

  837. Prayers.

  838. And hears.

  839. He is the one.

  840. That died on the cross.

  841. For us.

  842. He is the one.

  843. That bore.

  844. Our.

  845. Shame.

  846. He took.

  847. All.

  848. Of our.

  849. Shame.

  850. So that we would be.

  851. Honored.

  852. By God.

  853. He is the one.

  854. Who bore.

  855. All.

  856. Our.

  857. Unrighteousness.

  858. So that we.

  859. Would be.

  860. Righteous.

  861. He is the one.

  862. Who bore.

  863. The wrath.

  864. Of God.

  865. So that we.

  866. May be.

  867. Saved.

  868. The Lord.

  869. Jesus Christ.

  870. Is a refuge.

  871. On a rock.

  872. In a day.

  873. Of trouble.

  874. He is a fortress.

  875. Of protection.

  876. Against us.

  877. That we.

  878. Must continually.

  879. Come to.

  880. And be guarded.

  881. By.

  882. The schemes.

  883. Of the devil.

  884. And his attacks.

  885. The Lord.

  886. Jesus Christ.

  887. Is the one.

  888. When we call out.

  889. To him.

  890. To save us.

  891. He will answer that.

  892. And he.

  893. Will save.

  894. The one.

  895. Who calls.

  896. To him.

  897. It is promised.

  898. Of the word.

  899. That those.

  900. Who call upon him.

  901. Shall be saved.

  902. And he.

  903. Who has promised.

  904. Is faithful.

  905. Our Lord.

  906. Our Lord.

  907. Is faithful.

  908. To us.

  909. And we.

  910. Come.

  911. To him.

  912. Year.

  913. After year.

  914. As the.

  915. Psalmist.

  916. Here.

  917. As an elderly person.

  918. Is looking.

  919. Back.

  920. The years.

  921. Come.

  922. And the years.

  923. Go.

  924. but we constantly come to the word as well we come back to the word of god for our encouragement

  925. for our assurance for every step that we take into the days that are unknown we don't know what

  926. lies ahead of us and there are many days where we will cry out oh lord hear me answer me are you there

  927. to listen to my cry and we come back to this word we find his assurances and his promises as a comfort

  928. to us as a reminder that he is there as a rock and refuge and that he is protecting us

  929. the faith that has matured over years does not easily let go in the time of trouble

  930. it holds on and holds on fast whether we are whether we are young or old here

  931. it's good to remind ourselves to hold on to god and to keep looking to him whatever situation we are in

  932. to keep coming back to his word and be reminded of what it says to us

  933. and how it guides us and shows us who the god is that we are looking at

  934. the psalmist here he looks to god but he also looks to himself

  935. verse 4 almost introduces this transition rescue me oh my god we have that call of heavenward again

  936. from the hand of the wicked and then he comes down from this vertical look almost to this horizontal

  937. look to those that are around him those that are surrounding him the situation that he is in

  938. the hand of the wicked from the grasp of the cruel and the unjust man

  939. it's almost as if he is in this hand that has overpowered him he feels so vulnerable and helpless all his strength has gone

  940. he's in this hand of the evil one

  941. it almost feels like he's been controlled by this hand

  942. and maybe he's asking himself is this where the believer belongs is this where i'm meant to be

  943. no he knows that is not where he will be

  944. he seeks to be rescued and he cries out to be rescued from that place

  945. he knows that's not this natural place

  946. and he cries out to be rescued the god that hears him will not abandon him for whatever reason he's in that hand

  947. he cries out to god

  948. and the hand that holds him as the evil hand is weak before god

  949. for the lord's hand is a mighty hand it's a strong hand

  950. and if you look at this the one that has fallen into this hand of the evil one for whatever reason

  951. it speaks of job six job's experience

  952. it's it's kind of written over this experience of the psalmist as well

  953. but his faith just wouldn't let go

  954. all his strength is spent all his resources has been taken from him

  955. he's got nothing absolutely nothing he's on empty

  956. he's holding on to god

  957. others are coming and telling him

  958. curse god and die

  959. abandon god

  960. but what was job's cry

  961. i know that my redeemer lives

  962. he knew that his rescuer was there

  963. to hear his prayer

  964. and in time would save him

  965. he looks to god

  966. he looks within himself

  967. and he has this personal declaration in verse 5

  968. for you oh lord are my hope my trust oh lord from my youth

  969. upon you i have leaned from before my birth

  970. casting his mind back over the years of his experience

  971. his hope and trust has always been in this lord

  972. even from his youth

  973. but he extends that look even

  974. to his birth

  975. keeps going back

  976. and it says there

  977. upon you i leaned from before my birth

  978. now that kind of implies that he made some sort of conscious decision

  979. to

  980. rely upon god or to trust on god

  981. but if you

  982. took the king james version

  983. maybe the translation here isn't so

  984. clear

  985. the king james version says

  986. by thee i have been

  987. hold

  988. holding up in the womb

  989. by thee i have been upheld in the womb

  990. so he looks back to all the way back to his birth

  991. and he says

  992. well even there oh lord

  993. you kept me

  994. you upheld me

  995. you chose to keep me

  996. even in that moment

  997. god in his grace

  998. chose him first

  999. god in his grace

  1000. loved him

  1001. first

  1002. god in his grace

  1003. protected him

1004. even when he knew nothing of god

  1005. as he did for

1006. even when we didn't have any word of god

  1007. god in his grace

1008. was looking out over us

1009. and when the psalmist here

  1010. is recalling these things

  1011. he's

  1012. thinking of himself

  1013. that baby

  1014. in the most vulnerable

  1015. of situations

1016. where there's no word of god

1017. can't do anything for himself

  1018. so weak and fragile

  1019. completely reliant on another

  1020. he thinks

  1021. well

  1022. you kept me then

1023. and when all his strength is spent

  1024. in the day

1025. where he has no strength

1026. where he cannot do anything for himself

  1027. and he feels like

  1028. he is so vulnerable

1029. as a child that can do nothing

1030. he looks to the lord

  1031. who will keep him

  1032. who trusts in him

1033. and has faith in him

1034. when he looks to himself

  1035. he sees that

  1036. great hand of god

1037. the greater hand of power

  1038. than

1039. all the powers of the evil

1040. and of this world at work

  1041. the one who has

  1042. decreed all things

  1043. he who is there

  1044. in that day

1045. and he who is with me

  1046. even to this day

  1047. and this is true

  1048. of the christian

  1049. today

  1050. that the lord

  1051. is there with him

1052. and at the end of verse 6

  1053. when he considers

  1054. all these things

  1055. even in the turmoil

  1056. that he is in

  1057. he says

  1058. my praise

  1059. is continually

  1060. of you

  1061. he looks to himself

  1062. and he's

  1063. immediately

  1064. directed back

  1065. heavenward

  1066. to the lord

  1067. who is faithful

  1068. to him

  1069. he has kept him

1070. he has not left him

1071. he has been with him

  1072. through his youth

  1073. through his life

  1074. even to this day

  1075. to other people

  1076. he is a wonder

1077. it says in verse 7

  1078. I have been

  1079. a portent

  1080. to many

  1081. that means just

  1082. we know the

  1083. Psalter version

  1084. more

  1085. more familiar

  1086. with us

  1087. I have been a wonder

  1088. to many

  1089. that's just what

  1090. that word means

  1091. I have been a wonder

  1092. to many

  1093. maybe he looks back

  1094. on his experience

  1095. and people

  1096. people that he knew

  1097. maybe have wondered

  1098. at him

  1099. for

  1100. having trusted

  1101. in the lord

  1102. in these days

  1103. of turmoil

  1104. where other people

  1105. are questioning

  1106. why are you

  1107. why are you

  1108. still trusting

  1109. in that lord

  1110. what can he do

  1111. for you

  1112. but he does not

  1113. let go

  1114. the lord

  1115. has not

  1116. let him down

  1117. even though

  1118. he may have

  1119. walked away

  1120. he may have

  1121. walked in a

  1122. different direction

  1123. but he comes

  1124. back to god

  1125. and this may

  1126. be a cause

  1127. of wonder

  1128. to many

  1129. but they go

  1130. out to the world

  1131. looking for

  1132. other comforters

  1133. they come back

  1134. to their lord

  1135. and their god

  1136. they realise

  1137. the foolishness

  1138. of their way

  1139. like the

  1140. prodigal son

  1141. that went out

  1142. on his own way

  1143. returned to his

  1144. father

  1145. his father

  1146. welcomed him

  1147. the behaviour

  1148. of the christian

  1149. the world

  1150. doesn't get it

  1151. the world

  1152. left baffled

  1153. and wondered

  1154. why you would

1155. act in such a way

  1156. the faithfulness

  1157. of the christian

  1158. should be the same

  1159. that we

  1160. trust in god

  1161. every day

  1162. every step

  1163. we read our bible

1164. and are guided by it

  1165. and the world

  1166. just look at you

  1167. and wonder

  1168. what is he doing

  1169. they don't grasp it

  1170. and it is only

  1171. by the power

  1172. of the spirit

  1173. that has been

  1174. at work

  1175. within us

  1176. do we ever

  1177. understand

  1178. we look

  1179. at ourselves

  1180. at times

  1181. but not

  1182. for too long

  1183. like shane

  1184. said

  1185. every look

  1186. at yourself

  1187. have ten looks

  1188. at christ

  1189. when we look

  1190. at ourselves

  1191. for too long

  1192. there is kind

  1193. of every reason

  1194. that why would

  1195. the lord save us

  1196. why would the lord

  1197. love us

  1198. we see so much

  1199. of ourselves

  1200. it is so sinful

  1201. but the lord

  1202. jesus christ

  1203. will never leave thee

  1204. or forsake thee

  1205. we look back

  1206. at god's faithfulness

  1207. and the faith

  1208. that he has worked

  1209. in us

  1210. over the years

  1211. we ourselves

  1212. can be at times

  1213. in awe

1214. of what he has done

  1215. the psalmist

  1216. mouth is filled

  1217. with your praise

  1218. and with your glory

  1219. all the day long

  1220. all day

  1221. the psalmist's mind

  1222. is on his lord

  1223. but then we see

  1224. this on element

  1225. of doubt

  1226. in verse 9

1227. do not cast me off

  1228. in the time

  1229. of old age

  1230. forsake me not

  1231. when my strength

  1232. is spent

  1233. you know

  1234. there's people

  1235. in our lives

  1236. and we may think

  1237. of elderly

  1238. christians

  1239. witnesses

  1240. and we may look

  1241. at them

  1242. and we think

  1243. they're so strong

  1244. and yet it's

  1245. probably true

  1246. that they equally

  1247. have their own

  1248. doubts

  1249. this person

  1250. this psalmist

  1251. on the outward

  1252. to the world

  1253. he probably looks

  1254. so strong

  1255. and so faithful

  1256. and yet he

  1257. there's an element

  1258. of doubt

  1259. coming in

  1260. which is true

  1261. of ourselves

  1262. as well

  1263. there's times

  1264. where we doubt

  1265. that god

  1266. would hear our cry

  1267. we doubt

  1268. that god

  1269. will go with us

  1270. we doubt

  1271. that god

  1272. would keep us

1273. do not cast me off

  1274. in the time

  1275. of old age

  1276. forsake me not

  1277. when my strength

  1278. is spent

  1279. and we look

  1280. at ourselves

  1281. we must

  1282. only do so

  1283. briefly

  1284. we come back

  1285. to the word

  1286. of god

  1287. we see

  1288. our lord

  1289. we see

  1290. our rock

  1291. we see

  1292. a god

  1293. that does

  1294. not leave

  1295. us

  1296. nor forsake

  1297. us

  1298. even when

  1299. we feel

  1300. like he should

  1301. you'll always

  1302. remain with us

  1303. and be

  1304. constantly

  1305. faithful

  1306. to the people

  1307. that trust

  1308. in him

  1309. so the

  1310. psalmist

  1311. of psalm

  1312. 71

  1313. who is

  1314. of old age

  1315. looking back

  1316. afflicted

  1317. his strength

  1318. is spent

  1319. the attack

  1320. of the enemies

  1321. come

  1322. there in

  1323. verse 10

  1324. and 11

  1325. they're chasing

  1326. him

  1327. they're almost

  1328. as if they're

  1329. pursuing him

  1330. to catch him

  1331. to trap him

  1332. but we know

  1333. he is not

  1334. left there

  1335. we know

  1336. that the

  1337. psalmist

  1338. even in this

  1339. situation

  1340. he lifts

  1341. his eyes

  1342. heavenward

  1343. to god

  1344. and he

  1345. finds

  1346. himself

  1347. praising god

  1348. all the

  1349. day long

  1350. for the

  1351. lord's

  1352. faithfulness

  1353. in every

  1354. step

  1355. every year

  1356. every day

  1357. we come

  1358. to the

  1359. beginning

  1360. of our

  1361. new year

  1362. and what

  1363. does the

  1364. lord ask

  1365. for

  1366. of his

  1367. people

  1368. that they

  1369. would be

  1370. faithful

  1371. but to

  1372. be faithful

  1373. is maybe

  1374. one of the

  1375. hardest

  1376. things

  1377. of our

  1378. lives

  1379. as

  1380. Christians

  1381. it is

  1382. hard

  1383. to be

  1384. constantly

  1385. faithful

  1386. and to

  1387. be obedient

  1388. to what

  1389. he asks

  1390. of us

  1391. but we

  1392. must be

  1393. that is

  1394. what forms

  1395. a Christian

  1396. our faith

  1397. that is

  1398. our identity

  1399. our faith

  1400. in Jesus

  1401. Christ

  1402. what is it

  1403. that Christ

  1404. asks for

  1405. on the

  1406. day of

  1407. judgment

  1408. not that

  1409. you

  1410. understood

  1411. your bible

  1412. you knew

  1413. everything

  1414. you didn't

  1415. you weren't

  1416. anxious

  1417. you weren't

  1418. in turmoil

  1419. so you

  1420. can enter

  1421. heaven

  1422. good

  1423. and faithful

  1424. servant

  1425. the servants

  1426. of the

  1427. lord who

  1428. hold fast

  1429. to his

  1430. word

  1431. cling

  1432. to

  1433. his

  1434. promises

  1435. and do

  1436. not let

  1437. go

  1438. even when

  1439. all their

  1440. strength is

  1441. spent

  1442. when the

  1443. tank is

  1444. empty

  1445. maybe

  1446. you feel

  1447. like that's

  1448. the beginning

  1449. of a new

  1450. year

  1451. maybe you

  1452. feel like

  1453. you feel

  1454. so dry

  1455. come back

  1456. to God

  1457. cry out

  1458. to him

  1459. oh lord

  1460. rescue me

  1461. oh lord

  1462. hear my

  1463. prayer

  1464. oh lord

  1465. save me

  1466. we turn

  1467. to him

  1468. we look

  1469. back over

  1470. the years

  1471. and may

  1472. we

  1473. lift our

  1474. heads

  1475. and voices

  1476. heavenward

  1477. prayerfully

  1478. praising

  1479. our lord

  1480. who is

  1481. faithful

  1482. to those

  1483. who are

  1484. faithful

  1485. the lord

  1486. will never

  1487. leave his

  1488. people

  1489. nor

  1490. forsake

  1491. them

  1492. may these

  1493. thoughts

  1494. be blessed

  1495. to us

  1496. this evening

  1497. we'll conclude

  1498. by singing

  1499. and sun

  1500. joy

  1501. of

  1502. a

  1503. verse

  1504. and

  1505. extend

  1506. to them

  1507. for

  1508. and

  1509. let's

  1510. say

  1511. well

  1512. that's

  1513. this evening

  1514. and

  1515. do

  1516. to tab

  1517. out

  1518. and

  1519. say

  1520. how

  1521. to

  1522. instead

  1523. of
