  1. We're going to begin our worship this evening, and we're singing firstly in Psalm 48a.

  2. 48a, that's on page 63, singing to Choon Paisley, and we're singing verses 1 to 8.

  3. Great is the Lord who rules on high, with praise his temple fill, within the city of

  4. our God and on his holy hill.

  5. Mount Zion, with its graceful height, gives joy to all the earth.

  6. The great king's city far excels, the mountains of the north.

  7. Within her citadels and towers, God's presence is revealed, for he has shown himself to be

  8. her fortress and her shield.

  9. Down as far as verse 8, these verses, great is the Lord.

  10. Mount Zion, with praise his temple fill, within the city of our God and on his holy hill.

  11. Mount Zion, with its graceful height, gives joy to all the earth.

  12. Mount Zion, with its graceful height, gives joy to all the earth.

  13. The great king's city far excels, the mountains of the north.

  14. John 9.

  15. FI 29a, this day has beenures by king and on his holy hill.

  16. God's presence is revealed.

  17. For he has shown himself to thee,

  18. had fortress and earth shield.

  19. When kings joined forces to attack,

  20. as one they marched ahead.

  21. They saw hand and they were amazed,

  22. they all in terror play.

  23. Like women giving birth in pain,

  24. they trembled in disdain.

  25. You wrecked them like a merchant tree,

  26. by tempest blown away.

  27. As we have heard, so have we seen,

  28. God's city will endure.

  29. The Lord Almighty evermore

  30. has sent in his Savior.

  31. Let's once more join together now in prayer.

  32. Let's call upon the Lord in prayer.

  33. Lord, our ever-bressed God,

  34. gracious and merciful,

  35. full of kindness,

  36. full of loving kindness toward his people,

  37. God who will by no means clear the guilty,

  38. yet you have provided forgiveness for us.

  39. We bless you, Lord our God,

  40. that we come together tonight to praise you.

  41. And we have already used these words in your praise

  42. that remind us and teach us

  43. of the way in which you are so unchangeably

  44. the king of your people,

  45. and of which they too are your people,

  46. your flock,

  47. that city that you prepare

  48. for your abode forevermore.

  49. We thank you, Lord, tonight,

  50. that we come in acknowledgement of your greatness.

  51. And we thank you that as we sing your praises

  52. and acknowledge your greatness,

  53. so we also take note for our own assurance

  54. of your interest in your people,

  55. of your provision for them,

  56. of your care and attention to them

  57. each and every moment of their lives.

  58. Lord, we pray that these great truths

  59. may be impressed upon us tonight

  60. as well as we come to worship you here together.

  61. We pray that they may be a reality for us

  62. throughout each and every day of our lives.

  63. Lord, we need your truth each day

  64. to occupy our hearts and our minds

  65. and guide our thoughts.

  66. We need the power of your truth

  67. working within us

  68. by your Holy Spirit's energy

  69. in such a way that will daily lead us

  70. in the ways of righteousness.

  71. Lord, we come before you

  72. not only to bring you our praises

  73. and our thanksgivings,

  74. but also our confessions.

  75. A confession of our sin,

  76. confession of our own failures

  77. in so many ways

  78. to be what we should be.

  79. A confession, Lord,

  80. how far short we come

  81. in every way,

  82. in every aspect of our lives,

  83. short of glorifying your great name

  84. as we ought to.

  85. Forgive us, we pray,

  86. and cleanse us

  87. from our iniquities this night.

  88. We thank you

  89. that your word reveals to us

  90. the extent of our sinfulness

  91. and the various ways

  92. in which our sin itself

  93. is active in our lives,

  94. from the root of sin within us

  95. in our fallenness

  96. to the very acts of transgression

  97. and of sin

  98. that we ourselves

  99. are guilty of each day.

  100. And we thank you

  101. for the freeness

  102. with which pardon

  103. is available to us.

  104. You have opened a fountain

  105. for us

  106. for sin

  107. and for uncleanness

  108. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  109. We give thanks,

  110. O Lord,

  111. as we come to you

  112. and claim his merits

  113. and place our trust in him

  114. that we are assured

  115. that you will forgive us

  116. our sins

  117. and cleanse us

  118. from all unrighteousness.

  119. and we thank you tonight,

  120. Lord,

  121. for the assurance

  122. that that gives us.

  123. For we know that sometimes,

  124. indeed very often,

  125. Lord,

  126. on a daily basis,

  127. our sin troubles us.

  128. We find ourselves,

  129. Lord,

  130. sometimes perplexed

  131. at how easily

  132. we find ourselves

  133. straying into

  134. the ways of sin,

  135. even in our thoughts of mind.

  136. We pray, O Lord,

  137. that you would grant us

  138. the garrisoning

  139. of your truth

  140. and the guidance

  141. of your spirit

  142. throughout each day.

  143. And once again,

  144. we bring before you

  145. our needs

  146. as a congregation.

  147. Lord,

  148. we thank you

  149. for all

  150. that you continue

  151. to be for us,

  152. for everything

  153. that you have proved

  154. yourself to be

  155. down over the course

  156. of the years.

  157. And as we have begun

  158. another new year

  159. and our experience

  160. as a people,

  161. we ask, O Lord,

  162. that you would

  163. go before us

  164. and that you would

  165. prepare us

  166. to live as your people

  167. in the world

  168. and to hold forth

  169. the word of truth,

  170. that word of righteousness,

  171. which is so necessary

  172. not only for ourselves

  173. but for the circumstances

  174. in which we find ourselves

  175. in our day,

  176. when your word

  177. is so easily set aside,

  178. when your word, Lord,

  179. is all too commonly despised

  180. and ignored.

  181. And in many ways,

  182. Lord,

  183. your word

  184. is trampled

  185. under people's feet

  186. and the way

  187. in which they're treated.

  188. We pray for

  189. our community.

  190. We pray for

  191. each and every home

  192. that we know of

  193. around us.

  194. We pray

  195. for the congregations

  196. of your people,

  197. not only

  198. in this town

  199. and this community

  200. but throughout our land

  201. and indeed

  202. throughout the world.

  203. We pray, O Lord,

  204. that you would prosper

  205. your people.

  206. We pray that today

  207. they may know

  208. of your own work

  209. amongst them,

  210. advancing the understanding

  211. that they have of you

  212. and increasing

  213. their commitment to you.

  214. We pray in all

  215. our own activities,

  216. O Lord,

  217. as a people,

  218. that you would bless us

  219. and bless us

  220. through these activities

  221. to the world

  222. around us too.

  223. We pray for all

  224. that happens

  225. throughout the course

  226. of each week

  227. in addition to

  228. the services

  229. of worship

  230. on weeknights

  231. and weekdays

  232. and also

  233. on the Lord's day.

  234. And we give thanks

  235. for this day

  236. and we give thanks

  237. that you have sanctified it

  238. and given to us,

  239. Lord,

  240. that conviction

  241. that it is our privilege

  242. to know

  243. and to acknowledge

  244. your day

  245. and to come to seek

  246. to keep it holy

  247. as you have commanded.

  248. And we ask, Lord,

  249. when we depart

  250. from that too

  251. that you would redirect

  252. our steps

  253. and that you would

  254. especially grant to us

  255. as a community

  256. and as a people

  257. that we may once again

  258. turn to value your day.

  259. Turn to prize

  260. all that it means

  261. and all that it has

  262. to offer us,

  263. especially in the ways

  264. of the gospel.

  265. And we ask,

  266. O gracious one,

  267. that you would

  268. return to us

  269. and return us

  270. to that way

  271. in which your day

  272. should be honored

  273. and upheld by us

  274. and exalted.

  275. Help us,

  276. we pray,

  277. to commend your day

  278. and all its values

  279. to our people,

  280. to the community

  281. around us.

  282. Remember,

  283. we pray those

  284. who rule over us

  285. at this time,

  286. be near to them,

  287. Lord,

  288. we pray to give them

  289. the help

  290. and the insight

  291. that they need

  292. and perhaps

  293. that they themselves

  294. do not look

  295. for in yourself.

  296. We ask that you would

  297. bless our first minister,

  298. bless his ministers,

  299. bless the prime minister,

  300. bless his cabinet,

  301. bless the government,

  302. bless each and every assembly.

  303. Lord,

  304. bless us,

  305. we pray,

  306. with light from on high.

  307. Turn us away

  308. from the ways

  309. of man

  310. and of sin

  311. and of secular thinking.

  312. Give us,

  313. we pray,

  314. to have our confidence

  315. reset in the Lord.

  316. Enable them,

  317. Lord,

  318. who rule over us

  319. to meaningfully reflect

  320. upon what you have been

  321. to this nation

  322. over the course

  323. of the centuries

  324. and how much,

  325. Lord,

  326. we lack

  327. of those values

  328. that have now

  329. been set aside.

  330. Gracious one,

  331. we pray

  332. that you would return us

  333. into your ways

  334. and help us to repent

  335. over the many ways

  336. in which we

  337. have fallen short

  338. of your glory

  339. and your praise

  340. and which you have

  341. despised your ways.

  342. We ask tonight

  343. that you bless those

  344. who belong to us

  345. as a congregation

  346. who are ill.

  347. We know that there are

  348. many, Lord,

  349. during this past week

  350. or two

  351. who have picked up

  352. illnesses

  353. of various kinds.

  354. And we ask

  355. that you would

  356. grant blessing

  357. to them

  358. to restore them

  359. to health

  360. and to strength.

  361. We pray

  362. bless those especially

  363. who have gone

  364. to hospital

  365. in these recent days.

  366. We pray for

  367. little Matthew McLeod

  368. and ask that you

  369. bless him

  370. and bless his parents

  371. as he once again

  372. has gone into hospital

  373. here.

  374. We pray for Donny Graham

  375. as he's been taken

  376. to hospital

  377. in the mainland.

  378. We ask for him

  379. that your blessing,

  380. Lord,

  381. will be with him

  382. with all who care

  383. for him.

  384. Grant that your good

  385. hand may be upon him

  386. and that you'd be

  387. pleased, Lord,

  388. to grant your own

  389. recovery to him

  390. if it please you

  391. and your protective

  392. care of him.

  393. Remember all

  394. who in these days

  395. mourn the passing

  396. of loved ones.

  397. Remember those families

  398. in the past week

  399. or two

  400. who have lost

  401. loved ones

  402. who belong to us

  403. as a people.

  404. Grant them

  405. your comfort,

  406. we pray.

  407. Give to them

  408. that they may know

  409. of you as their God

  410. and as their guide

  411. and as their stay

  412. in this time.

  413. We ask that you

  414. would graciously,

  415. Lord,

  416. bless all others

  417. who have begun

  418. this new year

  419. thinking of times

  420. gone by

  421. and have loved ones

  422. no longer with them.

  423. We pray that you

  424. would continue

  425. to bless them

  426. and continue

  427. to uphold them

  428. and strengthen them.

  429. Continue to give them,

  430. we pray,

  431. to look to yourself.

  432. and we ask

  433. that you would

  434. grant blessing now

  435. to all whom

  436. we commit to you

  437. in the wider church.

  438. We pray for,

  439. Lord,

  440. all our students

  441. in the seminary,

  442. for all who teach there,

  443. for all the activities

  444. related to that training.

  445. We pray for Scott

  446. with ourselves

  447. and ask that you

  448. would continue

  449. to bless him

  450. in his preparations.

  451. Bless Fiona

  452. and the family

  453. and give them,

  454. Lord,

  455. as they wait upon you

  456. that they will know

  457. of your further direction

  458. of their lives.

  459. Bless all others,

  460. we pray,

  461. who in different institutions

  462. throughout the world

  463. seek to prepare

  464. for gospel ministry.

  465. We pray for all

  466. of these institutions,

  467. especially for

  468. Reformed seminaries

  469. and colleges

  470. throughout the world.

  471. Lord,

  472. grant that they may

  473. be kept

  474. from straying

  475. from your truth

  476. and that they may know

  477. that your blessing,

  478. Lord,

  479. is assured

  480. to those who trust in you

  481. and seek to put

  482. your word above

  483. the thinking

  484. and the wisdom

  485. of men.

  486. Graciously bless us

  487. now,

  488. we pray.

  489. Hear us in our prayers

  490. and cleanse us

  491. from all our sin.

  492. For Jesus' sake,

  493. Amen.

  494. We'll sing again

  495. to God's praise.

  496. We're singing this time

  497. Psalm 106.

  498. That's on page 382.

  499. And from verse 43,

  500. the tune this time

  501. is Argyle.

  502. He many times

  503. delivered them,

  504. but with their counsel

  505. so they him provoked

  506. that for their sin

  507. they were brought

  508. very low.

  509. Yet their affliction

  510. he beheld

  511. when he did hear

  512. their cry,

  513. and he for them

  514. his covenant

  515. did call to memory.

  516. And Psalms like

  517. Psalm 106,

  518. as you know,

  519. reflect upon

  520. some of the history

  521. of God's people,

  522. covenant people

  523. in the Old Testament times,

  524. and how frequently

  525. they provoked the Lord

  526. by their idolatry,

  527. by their turning

  528. to idols,

  529. and so on.

  530. And yet also

  531. the psalmist

  532. reflects us here

  533. on God's

  534. great patience

  535. with them,

  536. his mercy

  537. and redirection

  538. of them.

  539. And we need

  540. these things

  541. for ourselves,

  542. that we sing them

  543. meaningfully

  544. as we remember

  545. the Lord's patience

  546. with ourselves.

  547. Psalm 106,

  548. then from verse 43,

  549. he many times

  550. delivered them.

  551. He many times

  552. delivered them,

  553. but with their counsel's soul,

  554. they did promote

  555. that for their sin

  556. they were

  557. from their

  558. very low.

  559. Yet their affliction

  560. be held

  561. when he did hear

  562. their cry,

  563. and before them

  564. his covenant

  565. go of the Zhou

  566. malting

  567. heart of

  568. may

  569. cả

  570. thing

  571. else in death

  572. Amen.

  573. Amen.

  574. Amen.

  575. Amen.

  576. Let's turn now to read God's Word, and you'll find that this evening in the first book of

  577. Samuel, first book of Samuel in chapter 8.

  578. We'll read through from the beginning to the end of the chapter.

  579. So that's 1 Samuel, and chapter 8 is around page 278 or so.

  580. When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

  581. The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second Abijah.

  582. They were judges in Beersheba.

  583. Yet his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after gain.

  584. They took bribes and perverted justice.

  585. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him,

  586. Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways.

  587. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.

  588. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us.

  589. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.

  590. And the Lord said to Samuel, Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you.

  591. For they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

  592. According to all the deeds that they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt

  593. even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.

  594. Now then, obey their voice.

  595. Only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.

  596. So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him.

  597. He said, These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you.

  598. He will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots.

  599. And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties,

  600. and some to plough his ground and to reap his harvest,

  601. and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.

  602. And he will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

  603. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants.

  604. He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards

  605. and give it to his officers and to his servants.

  606. He will take your male servants and female servants

  607. and the best of your young men and your donkeys and put them to his work.

  608. He will take the tenth of your flocks and you shall be his slaves.

  609. And in that day you will cry out because of your king,

  610. whom you have chosen for yourselves.

  611. But the Lord will not answer you in that day.

  612. But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel.

  613. And they said, No, but there shall be a king over us,

  614. that we may also be like all the nations,

  615. and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.

  616. And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people,

  617. he repeated them in the ears of the Lord.

  618. And the Lord said to Samuel, Obey their voice and make them a king.

  619. Samuel then said to the men of Israel,

  620. Go, every man, to his city.

  621. And may God again bless to us that portion of his word.

  622. Before we turn to this chapter, let's sing again, this time in Psalm 47.

  623. 47 in Sing Psalms, that's page 62.

  624. And soon as Duke Street will sing these five verses.

  625. All nations, clap your hands and shout.

  626. Let joyful cries to God ring out.

  627. How awesome is the Lord Most High,

  628. great King who rules the earth throughout.

  629. He has subdued beneath our feet

  630. the nations who had been our foes

  631. in blessing Jacob whom he loved,

  632. a heritage for us he chose.

  633. So the whole of Psalm 47,

  634. all nations, clap your hands and shout.

  635. All nations, clap your hands and shout.

  636. Let joyful cry to God ring out.

  637. Let joyful cry to God ring out.

  638. How awesome is the Lord Most High,

  639. great King to the rules the earth through us.

  640. God bless you.

  641. He has subdued beneath our feet

  642. the nations who have been our foes

  643. in blessing Jacob whom he loved,

  644. and blessed in blessing Jacob whom he loved,

  645. a heritage for us he chose.

  646. God has got a wish of God,

  647. grace of joy that false e ingly tries,

  648. God has got a place

  649. and jösden.

  650. And blessed are Michigan for you.

  651. His ifiов.

  652. And so strong who have been the fairest,

  653. God has got a place to God,

  654. in the hält Casa on r einen like God,

  655. in the industrial world where he loved,

  656. God gives us the »c labouratio 6ºC2–

  657. To God our King let praise God.

  658. For God is King of all the earth.

  659. Sing sounds of praise to Him alone.

  660. God who's the nations come on high,

  661. He sits upon this holy throne.

  662. The leaders of the nations come,

  663. To heal themselves, to reign as God.

  664. To Him belong, the kings of all earth.

  665. And the kings of the King, the kings of all earth.

  666. Let's turn for a short time now as we wait on the Lord to 1 Samuel chapter 8.

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  667. And we're looking at most of what's in this chapter.

  668. I'd like just to read verse 7 first of all and then on to verse 19 as well.

  669. So at verse 7 we actually read these words.

  670. The Lord said to Samuel,

  671. Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you,

  672. for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

  673. And then in verse 19,

  674. The people refused to obey the voice of Samuel and they said,

  675. No, but there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations,

  676. and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.

  677. Well, this is another crucial, critical time in the history and the development of God's people

  678. in the Old Testament times, God's covenant people of Israel.

  679. As they come to this juncture, they've come to this point where they're demanding really a king of Samuel.

  680. And you can see the context in which it happened.

  681. It was a very difficult situation for them to manage,

  682. and sadly they got it wrong, as they all too often did.

  683. They came in these circumstances.

  684. At the beginning of the chapter we read that Samuel had become old,

  685. and he had made his sons judges over Israel.

  686. But his sons did not walk in his ways,

  687. but turned aside after gain, they took bribes and perverted justice.

  688. In other words, the sons of Samuel turned out to be very different to their father.

  689. At least in this respect, they didn't judge in a way that was righteous,

  690. though he had appointed them to these positions.

  691. And it does remind us, of course, that we cannot have a guarantee

  692. that a generation that knows the Lord and serves the Lord

  693. and is true to the Lord will be followed by one of the same caliber.

  694. It's the same as true of individuals, of course.

  695. But why did they not manage it so well?

  696. What was it about the situation that they got wrong?

  697. Well, why was it that they got it wrong?

  698. Because, as we'll see, they actually put their own preferences

  699. ahead of God's direction of them, ahead of God's provision.

  700. They put their own wisdom ahead of God's wisdom.

  701. They put their own way of looking at things ahead of the way

  702. that God himself had arranged things for them up to that point.

  703. I want to look at two things from the passage.

  704. We'll focus on the verses we've mentioned, but we'll see how they fit into the context.

  705. First of all, we'll look at the people's demand for a king.

  706. And in looking at the demand for a king,

  707. we'll see that they turned against Samuel,

  708. but more importantly, they rejected God.

  709. That's what God himself said to Samuel.

  710. And they have not rejected you, they have rejected me from being king over them.

  711. And not only did they turn against Samuel and reject God,

  712. but they also rejected the solemn warning that Samuel gave them,

  713. having been instructed by God to warn them of what would happen

  714. if they got their own desire and got this king that they were looking for,

  715. a king to be like the kings of the nations around about them.

  716. All that is built into the demand they had for a king.

  717. Secondly, we're going to look at the people's desire to be like the nations around them.

  718. Because as we'll see, that's really a fundamental part of their thinking at the time.

  719. They wanted a king like the nations, as they put it, that surrounded them.

  720. The pagan nations around them, they wanted to be like those nations

  721. in the sense that they wanted a leader like those leaders in these nations,

  722. kings that went out to battle and proved to be,

  723. as they knew very well, these nations had kings that were very much given to pomp and ceremony

  724. and attracting a lot of attention to themselves

  725. and a lot of resources to themselves, as Samuel indeed warned them.

  726. So the two things, the people's demand for a king and also their desire to be like the nations.

  727. Now the demand for a king meant a turning against Samuel, first of all.

  728. All the elders gathered in verse 4,

  729. they came to Samuel at Ram and said,

  730. Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways.

  731. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.

  732. The fact that their sons were corrupt, to that extent at least,

  733. that they took bribes and perverted justice,

  734. there's no blame attached to Samuel in that.

  735. And there's no hint of any fault with the way that Samuel presided over the people as a judge,

  736. approved of by God and appointed by God.

  737. And yet what they're doing is really looking for an excuse

  738. so that they'll have a king like the nations around them.

  739. So not only do they point attention or give attention,

  740. point out the difficulty of having these sons of Samuel who are taking bribes and perverting justice,

  741. they're also including Samuel himself and saying,

  742. You are old. You're past it.

  743. We need somebody other than you.

  744. We need something different.

  745. We need a king like the nations around about us.

  746. You've saved your time, but you're getting old.

  747. In other words, they're really saying,

  748. You're no longer fit to be leader, and we want a different type of leader to the leader that you were to us.

  749. And that's a very sad reflection, isn't it,

  750. in our thinking of the people at that time,

  751. because Samuel at this point was probably around 60 or 65 years old,

  752. and yet they're really here saying about him that he's pretty much basically too old to continue as leader,

  753. especially in view of the way his sons are behaving.

  754. And it's a very sad reflection on their thinking as a people,

  755. that they're using the failure of these sons and the relative age of Samuel himself

  756. to be an argument for change.

  757. And the argument for change turned out really to be not so good,

  758. because, of course, as you know, the history,

  759. they were given a king, King Saul,

  760. who turned out not to be the best thing at all for the nation.

  761. Where could they have gotten a better leader than Samuel as a judge?

  762. If you go back just to the previous chapter,

  763. chapter 7 and verses 3 to 10,

  764. you'll find there Samuel judging Israel

  765. and doing things that really he was led by the Lord to do.

  766. But here he is at that time actually leading the people

  767. in terms of the way in which they need to resist their enemies,

  768. the hands of the Philistines.

  769. So the people of Israel, they put away the bales,

  770. and then Samuel said,

  771. Gather to Israel, I will pray to the Lord for you.

  772. So they gathered at Mizpah and so on,

  773. and they confessed we have sinned against the Lord.

  774. And then as you go through the chapter,

  775. the people of Israel said to Samuel,

  776. Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us,

  777. that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.

  778. And all the way through there,

  779. you find an emphasis on how successfully he led them

  780. then against the Philistines.

  781. How soon they forgot.

  782. How soon they failed to take account of

  783. or just dismissed from their thoughts.

  784. What Samuel had been to them

  785. and the demonstration of God's blessing

  786. that they had come to know through Samuel.

  787. Well, it's very human, isn't it?

  788. Our failures are really reflected in that in many ways.

  789. And here they are saying,

  790. You are old,

  791. and your sons don't walk in your ways.

  792. It's not good enough for us anymore.

  793. Make us a king.

  794. Appoint us a king who will go before us.

  795. And that's sadly how you find it down through the course of history as well.

  796. And you find it on the part of people who even today will say to us,

  797. not necessarily within the church,

  798. but certainly outside the church in our society,

  799. people will say to us,

  800. Look, we don't actually want,

  801. we don't think that people who are really committed Christians,

  802. especially of the type that go to the free church,

  803. we don't think they should be given political power or political office.

  804. They're not really fit to be in office.

  805. It's not a new thing,

  806. but it fits into the same category,

  807. really in principle,

  808. people saying,

  809. Well, you know,

  810. that's no longer something that's relevant or fit for our times,

  811. for our days.

  812. So here's a turning against Samuel.

  813. But more importantly and more seriously,

  814. they're really turning against God.

  815. Samuel took the matter to God.

  816. That's so typical of Samuel.

  817. He actually took the matter to God in prayer.

  818. And God said to him,

  819. Obey the voice of the people,

  820. for they have not rejected you,

  821. but they have rejected me from being king over them.

  822. And he went on to say,

  823. This is just how they had always been.

  824. They showed themselves to have been very fickle people,

  825. people who very soon forgot what the Lord had done for them

  826. and turned to idols or to other ways of living their lives.

  827. And that's what he says,

  828. They have rejected me.

  829. According to all the deeds they have done

  830. from the day I brought them out of Egypt,

  831. even to this day,

  832. forsaking me and serving other gods,

  833. so they are also doing to you.

  834. Now, therefore, obey their voice.

  835. Now, God is not approving,

  836. in principle, of what they're asking for,

  837. not approving of the way they're going about it,

  838. but they're going to find out

  839. that if God gives a people or a person

  840. over to their own desires,

  841. it's not going to be a very good outcome.

  842. And what God is really saying to Samuel is,

  843. Obey them, give them what they're asking for,

  844. but tell them at the same time

  845. what it's going to mean for them.

  846. They have not rejected you.

  847. They have rejected me.

  848. In other words, they were tired.

  849. They had gone tired of God's arrangement of their lives,

  850. of their lives as a people,

  851. of God's provision for them.

  852. And once you start getting tired

  853. or not really seeing the relevance

  854. of what God is providing for us in the gospel,

  855. that's very much a danger signal to yourself

  856. and to myself or to any society or people.

  857. If we find the ways of God becoming somewhat boring,

  858. if we're saying, well, we need a change

  859. because this has just been going on,

  860. the same emphases in the gospel for years,

  861. the same type of thing being emphasized

  862. in the teaching of the Bible,

  863. the same kind of things that the Bible

  864. is bringing out for us.

  865. It was okay for Paul's day.

  866. It's okay in the Old Testament days.

  867. But really, we need to change that for our day.

  868. You know, if you and I get tired ourselves

  869. or begin to just become a bit weary

  870. of reading the same things in the Bible

  871. that are so central and so important

  872. to a Christian life

  873. and to a life of pleasing God,

  874. well, we have to really beware of that

  875. because that means we're on the path

  876. that really leads to decline

  877. and to maybe even falling away from God altogether.

  878. So that's what they had become tired of.

  879. And you know, all the way through history,

  880. not least with these people of Israel

  881. during the Old Testament days,

  882. you really have to admire the patience of God.

  883. We sang in some of the Psalms tonight

  884. that of God's patience with the people of Israel,

  885. despite the fact that He had done so much for them,

  886. they turned against Him,

  887. they rebelled against Him,

  888. and yet for His mercy's sake,

  889. He again forgave them.

  890. When they cried out to Him,

  891. He heard them.

  892. You know, tonight,

  893. we just cannot possibly measure

  894. the patience of God,

  895. the forbearance of God,

  896. the long-suffering of God.

  897. Look at your own life

  898. as I need to look at mine.

  899. How many times have you and I provoked the Lord?

  900. How many times have we failed

  901. to do what He requires us to do?

  902. How many times has our thinking gone astray

  903. in our thoughts about God

  904. and about His wisdom

  905. and about His arrangement of our lives as well?

  906. And yet He's not gone away

  907. and He's not kicked us into touch,

  908. as it were,

  909. and just left us there.

  910. Tonight,

  911. we are worshiping the patient God.

  912. That's no excuse for us

  913. to continue to resist Him

  914. or to reject Him

  915. or to choose some other way

  916. rather than His,

  917. but it does demonstrate

  918. the caliber of our God,

  919. the glorious nature of our God

  920. as a God of patience

  921. and of mercy

  922. and of long-suffering.

  923. And here He is with Israel

  924. as well so many times

  925. proving that.

  926. So, there's a turning against Samuel,

  927. but there's also a rejection of God

  928. and along with that,

  929. there's a rejection of very solemn warnings

  930. because God said to Samuel,

  931. now then,

  932. obey their voice,

  933. verse 9,

  934. only you shall solemnly warn them

  935. and show them the ways of the king

  936. who shall reign over them.

  937. In other words,

  938. Samuel was to tell the people,

  939. if you get a king

  940. like the nations that are around you,

  941. you'll suffer for it.

  942. It's not going to be an easy journey for you.

  943. He's going to take lots of the things

  944. that you presently prize

  945. and hold precious

  946. and he's going to use them for himself

  947. and he's going to be greedy

  948. of his own personal gain

  949. and his own personal prestige

  950. and you're going to have to give him

  951. as much,

  952. at least as you're now giving,

  953. to the service of God

  954. in the tithes that you're giving

  955. in the offerings of the temple

  956. and the offerings of the sanctuary.

  957. That's what He's saying to them.

  958. This is the kind of king He will be

  959. if He's going to emulate,

  960. as you want,

  961. the kings of these nations.

  962. If you're going to be led

  963. by that sort of king,

  964. this is what it's going to mean for you.

  965. So Samuel came back

  966. and told them this.

  967. In that day,

  968. he says in verse 18,

  969. you will cry out because of your king

  970. whom you have chosen,

  971. but the Lord will not answer you

  972. in that day.

  973. If you go down this route,

  974. he's saying,

  975. this is really going to be

  976. the situation you'll be in.

  977. What did they do?

  978. They said,

  979. no, but we will have a king.

  980. Whatever God says,

  981. whatever you say,

  982. whatever your advice is,

  983. whatever your counsel is,

  984. this is how we want it.

  985. We insist on this.

  986. We want to be like

  987. the nations around us.

  988. So you can tell us what you like,

  989. really,

  990. pretty much is what they're saying

  991. to Samuel.

  992. You can say what you like,

  993. but we will have a king

  994. to rule over us.

  995. You see,

  996. God is letting them have their way

  997. for the moment.

  998. And that's always very ominous.

  999. And it's something that you and I

1000. have to be always careful to avoid

1001. that we don't provoke the Lord

  1002. by a long-term departure

  1003. or sinning against Him

1004. and Him saying to us,

1005. well, have it your way.

1006. See how you get on.

1007. See what it means for you.

  1008. You know,

1009. He did that more than once

1010. with the people of Israel.

  1011. Remember back in Numbers

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  1012. chapter 11,

  1013. how they complained

1014. so much about the food

1015. and that they had left Egypt

1016. and left the delicious food

  1017. they'd left in Egypt

  1018. and hankered back

1019. for these delicacies in Egypt.

  1020. And here they were

  1021. rising up against Moses

  1022. and complaining against God

  1023. and His provision.

1024. And God said to Moses

1025. pretty much in these words,

  1026. give them food.

  1027. Or He's saying,

  1028. I'll give them food.

1029. I'll give them so much

  1030. that they'll loathe it

1031. by the time I'm finished with them.

  1032. So the wind came

1033. and drove hundreds and hundreds

  1034. of quails

1035. into the camp of Israel.

1036. And they began to eat the quails

1037. and I'm sure they tasted

  1038. delicious to begin with.

  1039. And yet,

1040. that chapter goes on to say,

  1041. while the food

1042. was still in their teeth,

  1043. it's not just saying

1044. literally still in their teeth,

  1045. but it really means

  1046. as they were eating

1047. and as they were enjoying

1048. the quails that they had,

1049. or the food that they had demanded,

1050. the Lord plagued them greatly.

1051. It doesn't say how many died.

1052. It doesn't say anything further than that.

1053. But the Lord plagued them greatly.

1054. Sent a great plague amongst them.

  1055. God was teaching them

1056. or seeking to draw their mind

  1057. to the fact,

1058. you have it your way

1059. and it's going to hurt you.

1060. You have it in a way

1061. that departs from my ways.

1062. It's not going to be good for you.

1063. It's going to be very painful.

  1064. Might even mean

  1065. something like it was

  1066. for the Israelites.

1067. A life of much suffering.

1068. Well, here is the demand for a king.

  1069. A turning against Samuel,

1070. despite all that he had been to them

1071. over the course of his life.

1072. And a turning against God,

1073. a rejection of God as king.

1074. And a rejection of the solemn warnings

1075. that God had sent through Samuel.

1076. Now we're going to look in a minute

1077. at how important the Word of God is

  1078. in all of this.

1079. But let's just stop at that juncture

  1080. and ask ourselves tonight,

  1081. have we been neglectful

1082. of God's Word to us?

  1083. Have we been dismissing

1084. the promises or the warnings

1085. or both in God's Word

1086. that He brings to us?

1087. Has God's Word struck our hearts

1088. at any time or more than once

  1089. in such a way

1090. as has convicted of our need

  1091. to turn from sin

1092. and to come to trust in the Lord,

1093. to repent of our sin,

  1094. to confess our sin,

  1095. to follow Christ,

1096. and yet we're still not

1097. complying with that demand of God?

  1098. Well, be careful.

  1099. Don't actually treat God

1100. as if it's just some

  1101. piece of human advice.

1102. Here is what Samuel said to the people.

1103. And here is the response.

1104. No, but there shall be a king over us.

1105. That's the second point we want to look at.

1106. The people's desire to be like the nations.

1107. Now, if you go back to verses 4 and 5

  1108. where they gathered together

  1109. and said,

  1110. You are old

1111. and your sons do not walk in your way.

1112. That, in a sense, is a pretext.

  1113. It's not that it wasn't true,

1114. but they were presenting that

1115. as a pretext for the real reason

1116. that they wanted a change

  1117. in their circumstances

1118. was because they wanted to be like

1119. the nations round about them.

1120. That's really what they were

  1121. concerned to be,

1122. even though they could say

  1123. Samuel was old

1124. and his sons were corrupt

  1125. and took bribes.

1126. This is really what was moving them.

1127. This is really the real reason

  1128. behind their request.

1129. They wanted to be like

  1130. the nations around them.

1131. They wanted to be similar to them

  1132. or identical to them

  1133. in this sense,

  1134. that they would have

1135. a king set over them

  1136. just like the nations.

  1137. Well, it's always

  1138. a really serious matter

  1139. when God's people

1140. don't want to be different

  1141. to the world.

  1142. When God's people

  1143. are not really careful

  1144. to make that distinction

  1145. between themselves

1146. and the world around them.

1147. Here are God's covenant people.

  1148. Here are God's people

  1149. instructed over the years

1150. that God is their king,

1151. that they have their life

1152. regulated and governed by him

1153. and not only by him

  1154. in a general sense

1155. but in a very specific sense

  1156. at many times.

1157. The God who led them

  1158. out of Egypt,

  1159. who delivered them

  1160. out of Egypt

  1161. as he reminds them

  1162. in this chapter

  1163. through Samuel.

  1164. The God who actually

  1165. brought them

  1166. the redemption from Egypt

  1167. that they enjoyed

  1168. and are enjoying.

  1169. Who brought them into

1170. the land that he had promised them.

1171. Who fulfilled all of these things.

1172. And what is he saying now

  1173. through Samuel?

1174. They have not rejected you

1175. but they have rejected me.

  1176. They don't want me

  1177. to be a king

  1178. invisibly over them

  1179. and yet certainly

  1180. their leader,

  1181. their guide,

  1182. their protector,

  1183. their carer.

  1184. They want someone

  1185. they can see.

  1186. They want someone

  1187. like the nations.

  1188. They want a figurehead

  1189. that they can actually

  1190. point to and say

  1191. look at our king,

1192. look at how glorious he is.

1193. And when we find ourselves

  1194. tempted to fall in

1195. with the ways of the world,

1196. that again is a really

  1197. serious issue for us.

1198. There are many places tonight,

  1199. many worshiping groups tonight,

  1200. many churches,

  1201. many denominations,

  1202. many congregations,

  1203. many individuals

  1204. who preach the gospel,

  1205. who preach,

  1206. at least to preach

  1207. from the Bible,

1208. who have come to embrace

1209. the ideologies of the world,

1210. who have come to embrace

  1211. the ideology

  1212. that's so concerned

  1213. to adjust our thoughts

  1214. about marriage,

  1215. about gender,

  1216. about education,

  1217. about religious freedom,

1218. so many things you could add to that

1219. in our own society right now.

1220. I'm not talking about the world,

  1221. I'm talking about

  1222. confessing Christians

  1223. that want to be

  1224. as like the world

  1225. as to import

  1226. that ideology

  1227. into their own thinking.

  1228. They're just like Israel

  1229. in those days.

  1230. We want a king

1231. to be like the nations

  1232. that are around us.

  1233. You know,

  1234. when you come

  1235. to actually find

  1236. any people

  1237. who confess

  1238. the Lord

  1239. as their God

  1240. to say,

  1241. well,

1242. we need to really adjust

  1243. our lifestyle

  1244. to suit the thinking

  1245. of the age.

  1246. We need an ideology

  1247. that takes away

  1248. from this ancient

  1249. Reformed view

  1250. of the Bible

1251. and of a Christian life

  1252. and of what

  1253. a people

  1254. and a society

  1255. should look like

1256. and how they should behave.

1257. And what have you left with

  1258. if you lose

  1259. the gospel

  1260. in its throughness

  1261. and its fullness?

  1262. Well,

  1263. let me just

  1264. take you back

  1265. to 1 Kings

  1266. or forward

  1267. to 1 Kings

  1268. because Solomon

  1269. was followed

  1270. by his son

  1271. Rehoboam

  1272. and Rehoboam

  1273. consulted

  1274. with the old men,

  1275. the senior men

  1276. who were there

  1277. at the time

  1278. after Solomon's death

  1279. and King Rehoboam

  1280. took counsel

  1281. with the old men

  1282. who had stood

  1283. before Solomon

  1284. his father

1285. while he was yet alive

  1286. saying,

1287. how do you advise me

  1288. to answer this people?

1289. And they said to him,

1290. if you will be a servant

  1291. to this people today

  1292. and serve them

  1293. and speak good words

  1294. to them

1295. and when you answer them

  1296. then they will be

  1297. your servants forever.

  1298. But he abandoned

  1299. the counsel

  1300. that the old men

  1301. gave him

  1302. and took counsel

  1303. of the young men

  1304. who had grown up

  1305. with him

  1306. and stood before him.

  1307. And so that's

  1308. where he turned,

1309. that's where he turned to.

1310. And then as you go on

  1311. you can see

  1312. the kingdom

  1313. was divided

1314. and then you go forward

  1315. to chapter 14

  1316. and what you find

  1317. in chapter 14

  1318. from verse 25

  1319. is that Shishak

  1320. the king of Egypt

  1321. he came

  1322. against Jerusalem

  1323. and he took away

  1324. the treasures

  1325. of the house

  1326. of the Lord

  1327. and the treasures

  1328. of the king's house.

  1329. He took away everything.

  1330. He also took away

  1331. all the shields

  1332. of gold

  1333. that Solomon

  1334. had made

  1335. and King Rehoboam

  1336. made in their place

  1337. shields

  1338. of bronze.

  1339. How pathetic

  1340. is that?

  1341. He gave away

  1342. the shields

  1343. of gold.

  1344. He probably

  1345. had not much

  1346. option

  1347. because Shishak

  1348. had come to him

  1349. and he had not

  1350. followed the ways

  1351. of the Lord

  1352. anyway

  1353. so he was weakened

  1354. in many ways.

  1355. He couldn't stand

  1356. against King Shishak

  1357. of Egypt

  1358. at that moment.

  1359. Shishak took away

  1360. all the shields

  1361. of gold

  1362. that Solomon

  1363. had made

  1364. and he fashioned

  1365. in their stead

  1366. replicas.

  1367. Replicas

  1368. made of bronze.

  1369. Now from a distance

  1370. you might think

  1371. bronze is actually

  1372. gold

  1373. if the sun

  1374. is shining

  1375. and you polished

  1376. it hard enough

  1377. but it's not gold.

  1378. And unless you look

  1379. very hard

  1380. at versions

  1381. of the gospel

  1382. that want to make

  1383. it fit into

  1384. the ideologies

  1385. of the moment

  1386. you might think

  1387. well you've still

  1388. got the gospel.

  1389. No you don't.

  1390. If you give away

  1391. the essentials

  1392. of the gospel

  1393. you don't have

  1394. a gospel left.

  1395. You have nothing

  1396. left here

  1397. that will really

  1398. reform the lives

  1399. of people

  1400. through the blessing

  1401. of God of course

  1402. but the Lord

  1403. will have us

  1404. always to retain

  1405. the essential matters

  1406. of the gospel.

  1407. That's why we have

  1408. to value

  1409. our reformed heritage

1410. and I'm going to mention

  1411. two things in that

  1412. in closing.

  1413. Our reformed heritage

  1414. for the day

  1415. in which we live

  1416. there's so much

  1417. within that

  1418. that we need to

  1419. maintain and prize

  1420. and promote

  1421. but especially

  1422. I want to emphasize

  1423. the Bible itself

  1424. and the ethics

  1425. of the Bible.

  1426. The Bible itself

  1427. and the ethics

  1428. of the Bible

  1429. because the Bible

  1430. is to be

  1431. our ethical base

  1432. our basis for

  1433. morality

  1434. what a life

  1435. should be like

  1436. what a life

  1437. should be like

  1438. as we live it.

  1439. A conviction

  1440. about the Bible.

  1441. Why am I

  1442. saying a conviction

  1443. about the Bible?

  1444. Why is that central?

  1445. Why is that

  1446. of first importance?

  1447. Surely you might say

  1448. well surely you should

  1449. be emphasizing

  1450. Christ first.

  1451. Shouldn't you be

  1452. emphasizing keeping

  1453. to the person

  1454. of Christ

  1455. that we have

  1456. in our reformed

  1457. theology and thinking

  1458. that's been passed

  1459. on to us

  1460. through the years?

  1461. Yes of course

  1462. but where does

  1463. that come from?

  1464. What is the source

  1465. of our information

  1466. about Jesus

  1467. and about his atonement

  1468. and about his person

  1469. about the fact

  1470. that he's God

  1471. and man fully

  1472. in both senses?

  1473. You come to that

  1474. from the Bible

  1475. and once you adjust

  1476. the Bible

  1477. then there's no telling

  1478. where you're going

  1479. to end up

  1480. adjusting all other

  1481. sorts of doctrines

  1482. that follow on

  1483. from the doctrine

  1484. of scripture itself.

  1485. You give away

  1486. the shields of gold

  1487. and you're going

  1488. to be left

  1489. with at best

  1490. bronze

  1491. maybe even copper

  1492. maybe even lead.

  1493. What I'm saying

  1494. is give away

  1495. the essential

  1496. core issues

  1497. of the gospel.

1498. What have you got left?

  1499. At best you've got

  1500. a very faded replica

  1501. which is not

  1502. the real thing.

  1503. Friends,

  1504. prize your Bibles.

  1505. I know you're doing that

  1506. but I know also

1507. for me and for you

  1508. there's always a voice

  1509. not far away

  1510. from the dark one.

  1511. That will say

  1512. as he said

  1513. long ago

  1514. to our first parents

  1515. to Adam

  1516. has God really said

  1517. don't you need

  1518. to adjust this

  1519. to fit the thinking

  1520. of the day?

  1521. Don't you need

  1522. to just give away

  1523. some of those

  1524. more robust

  1525. reformed teachings

  1526. because people

  1527. don't want that

  1528. nowadays

  1529. and you don't want

  1530. a gospel

  1531. that people don't want?

  1532. That's the argument.

  1533. That's the ideology

  1534. of the age

  1535. and that's the kind

  1536. of temptation

  1537. that we face.

  1538. But what is

  1539. the Bible?

  1540. That's where you

  1541. have to begin.

  1542. You don't have to

  1543. you don't begin

  1544. with what does

  1545. the Bible say?

  1546. That comes next.

  1547. First thing you do

  1548. is what is

  1549. the Bible?

  1550. And the Bible

1551. is the Word of God

  1552. and we just

  1553. briefly mention

  1554. from the confession

  1555. of faith.

  1556. This paragraph

  1557. in chapter 1

  1558. paragraph 5

  1559. We may be moved

  1560. and induced

  1561. by the testimony

  1562. of the church

  1563. to a high

  1564. and reverent esteem

  1565. of the Holy Scripture.

  1566. Then listen to this.

  1567. The heavenliness

  1568. of the matter

  1569. the efficacy

  1570. of the doctrine

  1571. the majesty

  1572. of the style

  1573. the consent

  1574. of all the parts

  1575. the scope

  1576. of the whole

  1577. which is to give

  1578. all glory to God

  1579. the full discovery

  1580. it makes

  1581. of the only way

  1582. of man's salvation

  1583. the many other

  1584. incomparable excellencies

  1585. and the entire

  1586. perfection thereof

  1587. are arguments

  1588. whereby it

  1589. doth abundantly

  1590. evidence itself

  1591. to be the Word

  1592. of God.

  1593. Nevertheless

  1594. notwithstanding

  1595. our full persuasion

  1596. and assurance

  1597. of the infallible truth

  1598. and divine authority

  1599. thereof

  1600. is from the inward

1601. work of the Holy Spirit

  1602. bearing witness

1603. by and with the Word

  1604. in our hearts.

  1605. Now where people

  1606. reject the Bible

  1607. as authoritative

  1608. as God's Word

  1609. that has certainly

  1610. not come

  1611. from the inward

1612. work of the Holy Spirit

  1613. bearing witness

1614. by and with the Word

  1615. in our hearts.

  1616. That's why we pray

1617. for God to keep us

  1618. not just the likes

  1619. of myself

  1620. and others

  1621. who preach the Gospel

  1622. but yourselves

  1623. as well

  1624. as people

  1625. in this world

  1626. who live for Christ

  1627. make sure

  1628. that you have

  1629. the Bible

  1630. centrally

  1631. foundationally

  1632. daily

  1633. constantly

  1634. in your life.

  1635. It's from it

  1636. you receive

  1637. everything you know

  1638. and understand

  1639. of every other topic

  1640. that's vital to you

  1641. including God

  1642. himself

  1643. and the Lord

  1644. Jesus Christ

  1645. and salvation.

  1646. But secondly

  1647. not just a conviction

  1648. about the Bible

  1649. but conformity

  1650. to the Bible's

  1651. ethic.

  1652. Our conformity

  1653. to the Bible's

  1654. ethic

  1655. I'm talking here

  1656. about the teaching

  1657. of the Bible

  1658. as a whole

  1659. with regard to

  1660. what our moral

  1661. Christian life

  1662. should be

  1663. and should be like.

  1664. conformity

  1665. to the ethic

  1666. of the Bible

  1667. not the other

  1668. way about.

  1669. Not the Bible

  1670. conforming

  1671. to what I think

  1672. my ethic

  1673. should be

  1674. or what I

  1675. insist on it

  1676. to be.

  1677. Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12:2

  1678. verse 2

  1679. Do not be

  1680. conformed

  1681. to this world

  1682. but be

  1683. transformed

  1684. by the renewing

  1685. of your mind

  1686. that you may prove

  1687. what is that good

  1688. and acceptable

  1689. and perfect

  1690. will of God.

  1691. See what it's saying?

  1692. Don't be

  1693. conformed

  1694. to this world

  1695. but be

  1696. transformed.

  1697. And here we are

  1698. in a society

  1699. where from

  1700. the government

  1701. downwards

  1702. we're now being

  1703. led down

  1704. the path

  1705. of insisting

  1706. that people

  1707. should not

  1708. be asked

  1709. or demanded

  1710. to have their lives

  1711. changed in any way.

  1712. Be what you want

  1713. to be.

  1714. Be what's good

  1715. for you

  1716. as you see it.

  1717. Let your gender,

  1718. let your behavior,

  1719. let whatever is

  1720. pleasing to yourself

  1721. let that be

  1722. what you follow out

  1723. and don't

  1724. let anyone else

  1725. seek to change

  1726. that for you.

  1727. And that's why

  1728. we're facing

  1729. and friends

  1730. I'm saying this

  1731. because

  1732. the Bible

  1733. has to be applied

  1734. to our present

  1735. circumstances

  1736. and our present

  1737. circumstances are

  1738. that our own

  1739. government in Scotland

  1740. Westminster I think

  1741. is involved too

  1742. to an extent

  1743. but our own

  1744. government has

  1745. made it known

  1746. that they do

  1747. have thoughts

  1748. and plans

  1749. in what they

  1750. call

  1751. a law

  1752. that would

  1753. actually ban

  1754. gender conversion.

  1755. Whatever is

  1756. meant by that

  1757. they don't give you

  1758. a plain answer.

  1759. But what that

  1760. means is

  1761. and you know

  1762. this is what

  1763. the Christian

  1764. Institute said

  1765. about it

  1766. Scottish government

  1767. wants to outlaw

  1768. practices

  1769. that seek

  1770. to change

  1771. suppress

  1772. or inhibit

  1773. someone's

  1774. sexual orientation

  1775. or gender

  1776. identity.

  1777. Activists

  1778. that's people

  1779. out with the

  1780. government as well

  1781. activists

  1782. are campaigning

  1783. for this

  1784. to cover

  1785. quote

  1786. casual

  1787. conversations

  1788. quote

  1789. gentle

  1790. non-coercive

  1791. prayer

  1792. and even

  1793. depending on

  1794. your parents

  1795. consent

  1796. to change

  1797. gender.

  1798. In other words

  1799. if that were

  1800. to become law

  1801. I could actually

  1802. find myself

  1803. in a court

  1804. of law

  1805. accused

  1806. of having

  1807. prayed

  1808. with someone

  1809. and asking

  1810. God

  1811. to either

  1812. change

  1813. their mind

  1814. or to give

  1815. them a different

  1816. perspective

  1817. on life.

  1818. I would be

  1819. criminalized

  1820. for being

  1821. faithful

  1822. to God.

  1823. That's

  1824. what's likely

  1825. to be the case

  1826. and despite

  1827. assurances

  1828. and we're

  1829. thankful

  1830. there are

  1831. assurances

  1832. that say

  1833. well

  1834. religious

  1835. practices

  1836. will not

  1837. actually

  1838. come under

  1839. such

  1840. a proposed

  1841. law.

  1842. believe

  1843. believe that

  1844. if you

  1845. will.

  1846. That's

  1847. not the

  1848. pattern

  1849. from the

  1850. past.

  1851. Now if

  1852. there is

  1853. to be a

  1854. consultation

  1855. I'm not

  1856. politicizing

  1857. the pulpit

  1858. this is

  1859. part of

  1860. the

  1861. gospel's

  1862. presentation

  1863. into the

  1864. world of

  1865. our day.

  1866. If there

  1867. is a

  1868. consultation

  1869. please

  1870. make sure

  1871. you complete

  1872. it.

  1873. A government

  1874. consultation

  1875. for your

  1876. views

  1877. on this.

  1878. and if

  1879. you want

  1880. to consult

  1881. the Christian

  1882. Institute

  1883. they will

  1884. give you

  1885. the words

  1886. that you

  1887. need to

  1888. put them

  1889. into your

  1890. own words

  1891. but they'll

  1892. give you

  1893. guidance

  1894. as to

  1895. how to

  1896. fill in

  1897. the various

  1898. parts of

  1899. that

  1900. consultation.

  1901. Friends

  1902. we are in

  1903. a war.

  1904. We're in

  1905. the midst

  1906. of a

  1907. conflict

  1908. not just

  1909. for the

  1910. soul of

  1911. the country

  1912. but for

  1913. the soul

  1914. of the

  1915. church

  1916. for the

  1917. soul of

  1918. the gospel.

  1919. we're in

  1920. a situation

  1921. which says

  1922. no

  1923. let's be

  1924. like the

  1925. world around

  1926. us.

  1927. A situation

  1928. that says

  1929. you Christians

  1930. you really

  1931. should

  1932. take note

  1933. of people's

  1934. preferences

  1935. and not

  1936. try to

  1937. insist on

  1938. such things

  1939. as the

  1940. Bible says

  1941. about being

  1942. born again

  1943. or being

  1944. changed

  1945. in such a

  1946. way as to

  1947. come to

  1948. comply

  1949. Christ's

  1950. commands.

  1951. Well there's

  1952. the people's

  1953. demand for

  1954. a king

  1955. and there's

  1956. the people's

  1957. desire to

  1958. be like

  1959. the nations.

  1960. Above all

  1961. friends let's

  1962. pray.

  1963. Let's pray

  1964. and appeal

  1965. to God

  1966. and do

  1967. everything else

  1968. practical we

  1969. can to

  1970. protect

  1971. what has

  1972. come to

  1973. us

  1974. sometimes at

  1975. great cost

  1976. from the

  1977. past.

  1978. Principles

  1979. for life

  1980. and practices

  1981. for life

  1982. which in

  1983. some cases

  1984. people died

  1985. for.

  1986. We're not

  1987. going to let

  1988. them slip

  1989. through our

  1990. hands are

  1991. we?

  1992. We're not

  1993. going to be

  1994. like those

  1995. of Israel

  1996. who say

  1997. let's just

  1998. be like

  1999. the world

  2000. let's just

  2001. fall into

  2002. and fall

  2003. in with

  2004. the pattern

  2005. of the

  2006. world.

  2007. Let's just

  2008. be as like

  2009. the world

  2010. as we can

  2011. and then

  2012. we'll win

  2013. them over

  2014. to the

  2015. gospel.

  2016. It won't

  2017. happen.

  2018. Let's be

  2019. true to

  2020. our King

  2021. Jesus

  2022. to his

  2023. truth.

  2024. Let's pray.

  2025. Lord our

  2026. God our

  2027. Father in

  2028. heaven we

  2029. thank you

  2030. for your

  2031. truth.

  2032. We pray

  2033. for grace

  2034. and for

  2035. your own

  2036. equipping

  2037. of us

  2038. to maintain

  2039. that truth

  2040. in its

  2041. purity

  2042. in the

  2043. gospel

  2044. in our

  2045. own way

  2046. of living

  2047. it as

  2048. well.

  2049. And we

  2050. ask oh

  2051. Lord that

  2052. for us

  2053. as a

  2054. nation

  2055. too we

  2056. be turned

  2057. back into

  2058. your ways.

  2059. Lord deliver

  2060. us we

  2061. pray from

  2062. the counsel

  2063. of mere

  2064. mortals

  2065. especially

  2066. when that

  2067. counsel is

  2068. contrary to

  2069. your word

  2070. and so

  2071. obviously

  2072. at odds

  2073. with your

  2074. will.

  2075. Lord we

  2076. pray that

  2077. in mercy

  2078. you'd

  2079. remember

  2080. and come

  2081. to us

  2082. in such

  2083. a way

  2084. that would

  2085. even surprise

  2086. your people

  2087. by coming

  2088. with reviving

  2089. and quickening

  2090. power to

  2091. us.

  2092. Continue

  2093. with us

  2094. now and

  2095. bless us

  2096. and pardon

  2097. our sin

  2098. for Jesus

  2099. sake.

  2100. Amen.

  2101. Our final

  2102. item of

  2103. praise this

  2104. evening is

  2105. Psalm 135

  2106. and that's

  2107. in the

  2108. Sing

  2109. Psalms

  2110. version

  2111. to tune

  2112. Stuttgart

  2113. that's on

  2114. page 176

  2115. singing

  2116. verses

  2117. 8 to

  2118. 14

  2119. Here are

  2120. the

  2121. exploits

  2122. of the

  2123. Lord

  2124. again in

  2125. the

  2126. psalmist

  2127. way of

  2128. putting it

  2129. in these

  2130. verses

  2131. He struck

  2132. down all

  2133. Egypt's

  2134. firstborn

  2135. man and

  2136. beast alike

  2137. were slain

  2138. mighty signs

  2139. he showed

  2140. in Egypt

  2141. routing

  2142. Pharaoh

  2143. and his

  2144. men

  2145. many

  2146. nations

  2147. he defeated

  2148. kings

  2149. he slew

  2150. with mighty

  2151. hand

  2152. all

  2153. Gophbation

  2154. and King

  2155. Sihon

  2156. all the

  2157. kings of

  2158. Canaan's

  2159. land

  2160. all their

  2161. lands he

  2162. gave to

  2163. Jacob

  2164. to his

  2165. people

  2166. Israel

  2167. as a

  2168. heritage

  2169. he gave

  2170. them

  2171. lands

  2172. where they

  2173. might

  2174. safely

  2175. dwell

  2176. Lord

  2177. your name

  2178. endures

  2179. forever

  2180. your

  2181. renown

  2182. is ever

  2183. great

  2184. for the

  2185. Lord

  2186. sustains

  2187. his

  2188. servants

  2189. and his

  2190. folk

  2191. will

  2192. vindicate

  2193. these verses

  2194. from verse

  2195. 8

  2196. and the

  2197. tune

  2198. of

  2199. Stuttgart

  2200. Amen

  2201. He

  2202. struck down

  2203. all

  2204. Egypt's

  2205. firstborn

  2206. but

  2207. not

  2208. peace

  2209. like

  2210. firstborn

  2211. mighty

  2212. signs

  2213. he

  2214. showed

  2215. in

  2216. Egypt

  2217. right

  2218. in

  2219. Jerusalem

  2220. and

  2221. his

  2222. men

  2223. when

  2224. the

  2225. nations

  2226. he

  2227. defeated

  2228. kings

  2229. he

  2230. slew

  2231. with

  2232. mighty

  2233. hand

  2234. all

  2235. of

  2236. patient

  2237. the

  2238. king's

  2239. child

  2240. all

  2241. the

  2242. kings

  2243. of

  2244. Canaan's

  2245. land

  2246. all

  2247. their

  2248. sons

  2249. he

  2250. gave

  2251. to

  2252. Jacob

  2253. to

  2254. his

  2255. people

  2256. Israel

  2257. as

  2258. the

  2259. head

  2260. it

  2261. takes

  2262. he

  2263. gave

  2264. lands

  2265. where

  2266. they

  2267. might

  2268. save

  2269. me

  2270. dwell

  2271. Lord

  2272. your

  2273. name

  2274. endures

  2275. forever

  2276. you

  2277. will

  2278. be

  2279. now

  2280. this

  2281. ever

  2282. made

  2283. for

  2284. the

  2285. Lord

  2286. says

  2287. Jesus

  2288. serve

  2289. and

  2290. his

  2291. hope

  2292. will

  2293. be

  2294. came

  2295. after

  2296. the

  2297. benediction

  2298. I'll

  2299. go to

  2300. the

  2301. main

  2302. door

  2303. and

  2304. now

  2305. may

  2306. grace

  2307. and

  2308. mercy

  2309. and

  2310. peace

  2311. from

  2312. God

  2313. the

  2314. Father

  2315. the

  2316. Son

  2317. and

  2318. the

  2319. Holy

  2320. Spirit

  2321. be

  2322. your

  2323. portion

  2324. now

  2325. and

  2326. ever

  2327. more

  2328. Amen

  2329. through
