  1. We're going to begin our worship this morning by singing to God's praise. We're singing in Psalm 33 in the Scottish Psalter, page 245 of the psalm book.

  2. Psalm 33, we're going to sing from verse 8 down to verse 14.

  3. Here in this psalm, verse 8,

  4. Let earth and all that live therein with reverence fear the Lord.

  5. Let all the world's inhabitants thread him with one accord.

  6. For he did speak the word and done, it was without delay.

  7. Established it firmly stood whatever he did say.

  8. We're reminded in this psalm of how this is the Lord who has created and made the heavens and the earth by his word and established it all.

  9. And as we're going to look at this morning in this service, a day will come when the Lord will come back to earth,

  10. back to reclaim and remake all that is his.

  11. So we're going to sing from verse 8 to 14 to God's praise.

  12. Let earth and all that live therein with reverence fear the Lord.

  13. Let all the world's inhabitants thread him with one accord.

  14. For he did speak the word and done, it was without delay.

  15. He established it firmly stood whatever he did say.

  16. God doth the council bring to naught, which he then folk do take.

  17. And what the people do devise, of none effect doth make.

  18. O but the council of the Lord doth stand forever sure.

  19. God of his heart the purposes from age to age endure.

  20. That nation blessed is whose God Jehovah is.

  21. God of His standard is not able to tell.

  22. God of his own faith inening the world has been resurrected.

  23. For God's idolize now, He読 Kyle.

  24. God of His Son.

  25. God of His Son is contrary to his life.

  26. Lord midwろう to kneel, too.

  27. Father King of angels host Israel is with one accord.

  28. That nation with друз and against Him.

  29. Sh rivals or drum a man Heamethrouff on faith in every step.

  30. God of heaven's doubt the radiation of God.

  31. Christ in whether he consequently.

  32. and behold all sons of men full well.

  33. He views all from his dwelling place

  34. that in the earth do dwell.

  35. Well, we've come to God in prayer.

  36. Now let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  37. Our Father in heaven, as we gather this day,

  38. we thank you for it.

  39. We thank you that this Lord's Day, your Sunday,

  40. is a day of coming for this purpose of worship,

  41. of gathering together and of spending time around your word

  42. and refreshing ourselves in it,

  43. not just a rest for our bodies,

  44. but a rest for ourselves from the busyness of the week

  45. and especially to be reminded of the rest

  46. that we have in Jesus Christ.

  47. And we pray today, Lord,

  48. that if we come feeling tired and weary,

  49. if we come maybe anxious about the week ahead,

  50. worried about what maybe lies ahead in a busy week,

  51. especially when we think of young ones just now

  52. who have preliminaries in these coming weeks

  53. and children may be busy in school in different ways,

  54. we thank you, Lord, that you hear our prayers

  55. and that you are there for us.

  56. We thank you that you remind us

  57. that we have a great gift in prayer,

  58. that all the things that worry us we can bring to you.

  59. For you care for us, you love us,

  60. as your people, as your children.

  61. And we pray, Lord, that you will hear all our prayers today,

  62. from the youngest to the oldest,

  63. that as we look to you,

  64. we seek your blessing on your word to us

  65. and upon all that we do.

  66. May we continue to learn from you,

  67. to learn about your goodness

  68. and your love towards us,

  69. and also about the many warnings

  70. that your word gives to us as well,

  71. even as we consider them today,

  72. Lord, that we would hear your voice

  73. and listen to you.

  74. So, Lord, bless us all,

  75. bless us as families and our homes

  76. and our communities and our schools,

  77. Sunday school and creche and twinnies today as well,

  78. Lord, we ask that you will bless each and every one

  79. who attends here today.

  80. Watch over us and take care of us today

  81. and in all the days ahead.

  82. So we ask all these things in Jesus' name.

  83. Amen.

  84. Well, who here enjoys watching the weather forecast

  85. Does anybody like watching the weather forecast?

  86. You make a point every day of sitting down

  87. and seeing what the forecast is for the next few days.

  88. Every evening, now you've got apps on your phones

  89. or on your iPad or these kinds of things

  90. and people are always looking at them.

  91. There's apps and you're maybe looking two weeks ahead

  92. and you're saying,

  93. look, it's going to be a severe gale in two weeks,

  94. there's going to be a hundred mile an hour winds.

  95. But by the time the two weeks passes,

  96. it's a clear sunny day,

  97. they got the forecast wrong.

  98. Because so often when they're trying to do a forecast

  99. way in advance and along a week or two weeks ahead,

  100. they don't always know exactly what's going to happen.

  101. But yesterday we were told

  102. that we were going to be under a weather warning

  103. from midnight last night until midnight tomorrow night.

  104. A warning about snow and ice.

  105. And if you'd been checking the forecast,

  106. you were maybe thinking this morning,

  107. you would get up and you'd look out the window

  108. or open the door and you'd see the place

  109. would be white with snow.

  110. And was it?

  111. No.

  112. Does that mean the forecast was wrong?

  113. Well, maybe not.

  114. Not yet because we're still under the warning, aren't we?

  115. So maybe tonight or maybe tomorrow morning

  116. when you get up, the place might be white with snow.

  117. We wait and see, don't we?

  118. And sometimes when we hear these kind of weather warnings,

  119. we maybe start thinking,

  120. great, there might not be any school tomorrow.

  121. If there's loads of snow, we can't get out,

  122. we'll get a day at home.

  123. But for other people, they might be scared.

  124. They think, oh no, what if I can't get out of the house?

  125. Well, I've got to go somewhere.

  126. I've got to travel somewhere.

  127. I might not be able to go.

  128. Some people get excited about the warning.

  129. Some people are worried about the warning.

  130. Well, today in our service,

  131. we're going to be thinking about a warning

  132. that the Lord gives in his word.

  133. And a warning that we're all under today and every day.

  134. And it's a warning that the Lord is going to come.

  135. He's going to come.

  136. Again, Jesus came into the world.

  137. That's what we read in the Bible.

  138. We see that Jesus came into the world.

  139. He came into this world and lived in this world among the people.

  140. He gave his life in this world.

  141. We look at the cross so often and we see there Jesus giving his life.

  142. And then he rose from the grave.

  143. But what did he say before he left this world?

  144. He said, I am going to come again.

  145. And that's the warning that he's given us.

  146. I'm going to come again.

  147. We don't know when, but the Bible tells us it's going to happen.

  148. But like the weather forecast, when we're looking,

  149. maybe we're thinking far in advance,

  150. we're just not sure what's going to happen.

  151. Maybe the Bible got it wrong.

  152. Maybe Jesus isn't coming after all.

  153. It's been so long.

  154. Surely he was going to come.

  155. He'd have come by now.

  156. But the warning is still there for us.

  157. He's telling us he's going to come.

  158. That's his promise.

  159. For some people, we'll be excited about that.

  160. We look forward to the day of his coming.

  161. For other people, you may be worried about that day.

  162. You may be afraid of that day.

  163. But what the Bible is telling us is to be ready for that day.

  164. If we know a weather warning's in place for snow or gales,

  165. we maybe make preparations by getting extra food in

  166. or these kinds of things.

  167. Well, the Bible warns us to be ready for his coming again.

  168. And the way to be ready is to hear what he's saying,

  169. that we are to trust in Jesus.

  170. To take refuge in him.

  171. And that way, we'll be safe and secure on the day when he comes.

  172. We'll be looking forward to that day.

  173. We'll be excited for that day.

  174. Because then we will see Jesus if we're believing in him.

  175. And we'll be with him forever.

  176. So we're under a weather warning just now.

  177. But we're under a greater warning too.

  178. A warning from the Bible that Jesus is coming.

  179. So let us be ready for when he comes.

  180. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  181. Our Father which art in heaven,

  182. hallowed be thy name.

  183. Thy kingdom come.

  184. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  185. Give us this day our daily bread.

  186. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  187. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  188. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

  189. Amen.

  190. We're going to sing again to God's praise this time in Psalm 18.

  191. In the Sing Psalms version.

  192. Psalm 18 on page 19 of the psalm books.

  193. We're going to sing from verse 1 down to verse 10.

  194. Psalm 18, verse 1.

    Psalms 18:1

  195. I love you, Lord.

  196. You are my strength.

  197. A fortress is the Lord to me.

  198. My rock and my deliverer.

  199. For refuge to my God I flee.

  200. Words remind us that we can find refuge in God.

  201. Not just for the day of his return,

  202. but for every day that we can take refuge in him.

  203. Psalm 18, verse 1 to 10.

    Psalms 18:1–10

  204. I love you, Lord.

  205. You are my strength.

  206. A fortress is the Lord to me.

  207. My rock and my deliverer.

  208. For refuge to my God I flee.

  209. He is my stronghold and my shield.

  210. The Lord who saves me by his might.

  211. I'll call on him and give him praise.

  212. I'm safe.

  213. He puts my foes to flight.

  214. The cords of death entangled me.

  215. Destruction hit me like a wave.

  216. Encircled by the snares of death.

  217. I face the terrors of the grave.

  218. In my distress I called on God.

  219. I cried out to the Lord for aid.

  220. He from his temple heard my voice.

  221. He listened to the prayer I made.

  222. The earth before God's anger quaked.

  223. The mountains deep foundations shook.

  224. Consuming fire blazed from his mouth.

  225. And from his nostrils came forth smoke.

  226. The heavens parted, he came down.

  227. Beneath his feet the dark clouds lay.

  228. Upon the cherubim he flew.

  229. On wings of wind he made his way.

  230. God's water llames.

  231. We can turn to read God's word together.

  232. Now we're going to read two passages.

  233. First of all in the Gospel of Matthew.

  234. Matthew chapter 24.

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  235. We'll read from the beginning down to verse 14.

  236. And then we'll turn to 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 verse 1 to 5.

    2 Thessalonians 2:1–5

  237. So first reading in Matthew chapter 24.

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  238. reading from the beginning of that chapter.

  239. Jesus left the temple and was going away when his disciples came to point out to him the

  240. buildings of the temple. But he answered them, you see all these, do you not? Truly I say to you,

  241. there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  242. As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately saying,

  243. tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the

  244. age? And Jesus answered them, see that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name saying,

  245. I am the Christ, and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of war.

  246. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

  247. For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and

  248. earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. Then they will

  249. deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death. And you will be hated by all nations for my name's

  250. sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets

  251. will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many

  252. will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom

  253. will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations. And then the end will

  254. come. We'll turn to our second reading in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. We're going to read

    2 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  255. just verse 1 to verse 5 of chapter 2. But you notice in chapter 1, there it speaks about the judgment at

  256. Christ's coming. That section of the end of chapter 1 from verse 5 to the end speaks about the day of the

  257. Lord's judgment. Some will be the promise of heaven fulfilled to others. Their destiny is eternal

  258. destruction and flaming fire, as it calls it there in verse 8, what we call hell. We see the picture of

  259. heaven and hell presented to us there. Our focus this morning is particularly on verse 1 to 3 of

  260. the second chapter. So we'll read verse 1 to 5. Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

  261. and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed

  262. either by a spirit or a spoken word or a letter seeming to be from us to the effect that the day of

  263. the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come unless the rebellion

  264. comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself

  265. against every so-called God or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming

  266. himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I told you these things? And so it goes on.

  267. Amen. And may God bless these readings from his word to us. We're going to join again together in a word of prayer.

  268. Let us pray. O Lord, our God, as we approach your word, there are many subjects that we feel that we are out of our

  269. depth with, many things that we maybe do not understand fully, and yet we still thank you that your word

  270. contains every matter that we need pertaining to life and death and eternity. And we know that apart from

  271. your spirit, Lord, we do not understand any of it, for it is your spirit that enlightens our minds and our hearts

  272. to hear and to understand what you are saying to us. And so we pray, Lord, for your help today as we

  273. think upon a subject that maybe we have maybe not every answer to, but help us to see every promise

  274. that is in your word that reminds us of the truth of it. We pray, Lord, that you will help us in the

  275. reminder that we have that the day is coming, that when you will come again, a day that we do not know.

  276. It could be any time, Lord, but we know, Lord, that our greatest need in it is to be ready for it.

  277. And we thank you that that is what your gospel gives answer to, that you have made it clear to all

  278. people, low and high, as the psalmist calls it, we can all find refuge with you. And we thank you that

  279. your gospel speaks and ministers to us in that way. We thank you that in all the answers we do not have,

  280. we have your grace that is sufficient. We have your strength that is made perfect in our weakness.

  281. And so we pray, Lord, that you will give us what we need to understand, the revealed things that we

  282. have in your word, for we know that there are hidden things that belong to the Lord. And so help us to

  283. just humble ourselves before you under the mighty hand of God. And we pray, Lord, that you will help

  284. us to hear you today, help us to know you, help us to be built up in our faith or to be brought to faith

  285. in you. Whatever we need, Lord, you know it already, and you are able to provide. And so we pray, Lord,

  286. that you will bless your word and all that we do in your name today, throughout this day, from the

  287. morning to the evening that as we look to you, as we call upon your name in our own private devotions,

  288. in our prayers, in our public worship, in resting in you, Lord, we pray that it will be a day of

  289. blessing and refreshment for us. For we are many so busy during the week and all the rest of the week,

  290. Lord, and even our Lord's day can be busy in so many ways with family and so many things to do.

  291. And Lord, we live in a world that is going so quickly, where everything seems to be 100 miles

  292. an hour. We thank you that your word reminds us that there is time to be still and to know that

  293. you are God. And we pray, Lord, that we will have these times. We'll have them not just in moments of

  294. the day, but every day, that we would have that time, precious time, just to be still before you

  295. and to know that you are God, to spend that time in peace with you, praying, hearing your word,

  296. and receiving it, being built up by it, not just rushing into the day, but spending that time with

  297. you, that that would build us up in our faith, that would help us as we go on in the week,

  298. in all the days of the week, in the busyness of work or home or school or whatever we are doing,

  299. that we would feel, Lord, encouraged and emboldened by you. For when we hear subjects such as the

  300. return of the Lord, we recognize then the importance of proclaiming your name to a world

  301. that is perishing, to a people that are perishing, to a people who are not ready for that day.

  302. And so we pray, Lord, that you will encourage us as a people here, always to have that in mind,

  303. to have that need in mind, that people need to hear the glorious gospel of Christ Jesus,

  304. who is able to save. We pray that in all that we would do, we would be blessed by you,

  305. whatever it is, whether it's collectively as a congregation or individually as a people,

  306. that we would know your spirit with us, helping us, giving us words to speak,

  307. bringing people into our paths on a daily basis that we can minister to, whether it's people we've

  308. known for a long time or people we just meet for the first time. We pray, Lord, for boldness and

  309. courage to speak of the gospel, that glorious gospel. We thank you, Lord, for your goodness to

  310. us in that way. And we pray, Lord, that throughout the world today, as your word is preached and

  311. proclaimed to all ends of the earth, that you will be building up your church, that your kingdom

  312. will come in power. And the more we see in our world, Lord, the more we see that great need of

  313. you when there are so many tensions around our world and from north, east, west, south, Lord,

  314. from every direction we see troubles and wars and famines and earthquakes, even as your word speaks

  315. of and as we have read. And yet you tell us not to be afraid, for these things must happen.

  316. And we pray, Lord, that in our fears that you will be near, in our anxieties that you will give us your

  317. peace, that you will remind us, Lord, that you have all things in your hands. And so help us to calm

  318. ourselves before you and to know you as our Lord and as our God. We pray that for many people all over

  319. the world today, your people who live in these situations on a daily basis just now, we pray,

  320. Lord, your blessing, your help towards each one. We pray for our own congregation and community here,

  321. Lord. We pray your blessing on us for those who are unwell from young to old, Lord. We pray your help,

  322. your strength, your blessing over us, those who are in hospital or in their own homes, Lord. We pray

  323. that you will be near to them, that you will bless them and keep them. Those who are mourning, Lord,

  324. we pray your comfort towards them. And as we had funerals in this last week, Lord, we pray for comfort

  325. and blessing towards all the families, the families of Bell Mackenzie and Ann Stevenson. We pray, Lord,

  326. that you'll be near to each one. Uphold them and be their refuge, be their strength. We thank you

  327. that even in the midst of sorrow, there was joy in the Lord and strength in the Lord for the assurance

  328. of hope for your people. And we pray, Lord, that you will continue to bless us and watch over us,

  329. be with us together as a people. Pardon all our sins as we come before you, confessing anew.

  330. Thankful, though, that you hear our prayers, that you are able to answer. And we pray, Lord,

  331. that you will continue with us now as we turn to praise your name and to hear your word. Guide us in

  332. our thoughts and in our words and in all that we do. Protect us, Lord, we pray. We ask it all in

  333. Jesus' precious name and for his glory. Amen. Before we turn back to our passage, we're going to sing in

  334. Psalm 27. And we'll sing in Psalm's version, page 31. Psalm 27. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 4.

  335. Page 31. The Lord's my Savior and my light, who will make me dismayed. The Lord's the stronghold of my

  336. life. Why should I be afraid? We'll sing from verse 1 to the end of double verse 4 to God's praise.

  337. Amen.

  338. Amen.

  339. Amen.

  340. The Lord's my Savior and my light, who will make me dismayed. The Lord's the stronghold of my life. Why should I be

  341. afraid? When evildoers threaten me to take my life away? My adversaries and my foes will

  342. stumble in the day. Although an army hems me in, my heart will feel no dread. Though war against me should

  343. should arise, I will lift up my head. One thing I'll plead before the Lord, and this I'll seek always.

  344. that I may come.

  345. that I may come with this.

  346. that I may come with this.

  347. God's willing cause

  348. hvad

  349. that I may come with this.

  350. Maybe that I may come with this.

  351. But now again.

  352. tehdas

  353. and it欠?

  354. holy

  355. And I

  356. may

  357. happy

  358. god

  359. and this

  360. Vil

  361. i

  362. and dwell there all my days,

  363. that on the beauty of the Lord

  364. I constantly rejoice,

  365. and in his earth may seek

  366. to know direction in his ways.

  367. We turn back to our reading in 2 Thessalonians.

  368. We're looking at chapter 2, verse 1 to verse 3.

  369. You can read these words.

  370. Now concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

  371. and our being gathered together to him,

  372. we ask you, brothers,

  373. not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed

  374. either by a spirit or a spoken word

  375. or a letter seeming to be from us

  376. to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.

  377. Let no one deceive you in any way.

  378. And so on.

  379. These words that we sang in Psalm 27, verse 4,

    Psalms 27:4

  380. they speak of the desire of the psalmist.

  381. One thing I'll plead before the Lord,

  382. and this I'll seek always.

  383. It's a desire that the psalmist has for what?

  384. To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.

  385. And as we turn to God's words today,

  386. and as we think of this subject of the coming of the Lord,

  387. is that your desire?

  388. Do you have that desire of the psalmist?

  389. To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.

  390. The day of the Lord's return is a day

  391. where everyone will appear before God.

  392. Everyone will appear before the Lord

  393. to give answer according to the deeds of this world.

  394. But will we as a people be a people

  395. who have that great desire,

  396. that longing to gaze on the beauty of the Lord?

  397. So we're going to look at this subject

  398. of the coming of the Lord this morning.

  399. And it's a subject that perhaps we have more questions

  400. than answers for.

  401. We don't have all the answers,

  402. but we often have questions about it.

  403. I'm sure we've often wondered, many of us,

  404. what will that day be like?

  405. What will it look like,

  406. the day of the coming of the Lord?

  407. But the sad fact is that there's so many people

  408. who give no thought to that day,

  409. or very little thought to that day

  410. and just push it away

  411. as something for another time

  412. and another place

  413. or just something that's not even worth considering.

  414. But what does the Scripture say to us

  415. about this day?

  416. Well, the first thing and the key thing is this,

  417. He is coming.

  418. That is a key truth

  419. that the Scripture gives to us.

  420. That's a key warning

  421. that the Scripture gives to us.

  422. That the day is coming

  423. when He will come again.

  424. And if we believe that,

  425. we often ask,

  426. what will it be like?

  427. When you look at the last words

  428. of the Bible

  429. in the book of Revelation,

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  430. chapter 22,

  431. the second last verse

  432. in the Bible says this,

  433. the words of the Lord,

  434. Surely I am coming soon.

  435. Surely I am coming soon.

  436. There's a warning there for us.

  437. Surely I am coming soon.

  438. The Lord Jesus,

  439. as He was taken up into heaven,

  440. as He ascended into heaven,

  441. you read it in the book of Acts,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  442. chapter 1,

  443. and it speaks there

  444. about His coming again.

  445. So there are plenty reminders to us

  446. that the Lord is going to come.

  447. And what's it going to be like?

  448. Well, again,

  449. the Bible describes it

  450. in different ways.

  451. As you read in Matthew,

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  452. chapter 24,

  453. we read part of that chapter,

  454. but if you read the whole

  455. of the chapter,

  456. it gives a lot more information

  457. as well.

  458. And it reminds us

  459. that it is going to be something

  460. that the whole world

  461. is going to see.

  462. Everyone is going to be aware of it.

  463. Now,

  464. we read in Psalm 19,

  465. for example,

  466. where it says,

  467. the heavens declare

  468. the glory of God.

  469. So we think of

  470. what we see in the heavens,

  471. the skies around us,

  472. and how often

  473. we look up to the skies,

  474. and what do we see?

  475. We see the wonders of God

  476. in so many ways.

  477. The heavens declaring

  478. the glory of God.

  479. We've seen it,

  480. or we've seen it

  481. even in these last week,

  482. when we think of the cold,

  483. frosty mornings,

  484. or evenings,

  485. when you see the sunrise

  486. or the sunset,

  487. when you see the clear sky

  488. on a frosty night,

  489. and you see the stars

  490. and the moon,

  491. all of these things

  492. standing out.

  493. You marvel at it.

  494. The heavens declare

  495. the glory of God.

  496. Sometimes you see

  497. a shooting star.

  498. Sometimes you see

  499. a meteor or a comet.

  500. Sometimes you see

  501. an eclipse.

  502. You see all these marvels

  503. in the sky,

  504. but you think,

  505. well, not everybody

  506. has seen it.

  507. Maybe only a few

  508. have noticed it.

  509. A sunrise,

  510. maybe many people see,

  511. but not all

  512. at the same time.

  513. A shooting star,

  514. maybe only a few

  515. will see.

  516. And all of these things,

  517. but you wonder

  518. at the coming of the Lord

  519. and the way it speaks

  520. about it,

  521. everyone is going

  522. to see it.

  523. The whole world

  524. is going to see it.

  525. And you wonder,

  526. how is that possible?

  527. Well,

  528. the Lord

  529. is coming,

  530. is what

  531. the Bible

  532. tells us.

  533. And as Paul

  534. is writing

  535. this second letter

  536. to the Thessalonians,

  537. he's writing to them

  538. about this subject,

  539. and he's writing to them

  540. in light of what

  541. has come previously

  542. here as well.

  543. In chapter 1,

  544. as I mentioned,

  545. in verse 5,

  546. to the end

  547. of the chapter,

  548. you see the reality

  549. of heaven and hell.

  550. There,

  551. if you read

  552. verse 7 and 8,

  553. it says in verse 7,

  554. to grant relief

  555. to you who are afflicted

  556. as well as to us

  557. when the Lord Jesus

  558. is revealed from heaven

  559. with his mighty angels

  560. in flaming fire,

  561. inflicting vengeance

  562. on those who do not know God

  563. and on those

  564. who do not obey

  565. the gospel

  566. of our Lord Jesus.

  567. It says,

  568. again,

  569. the revelation

  570. of Jesus from heaven

  571. with his mighty angels,

  572. how he's going

  573. to descend

  574. to his people.

  575. It's a wonder.

  576. It's going to be

  577. something spectacular,

  578. and spectacular

  579. as a sunrise

  580. or a sunset

  581. or a comet

  582. or a shooting star.

  583. All of these things,

  584. they're spectacular

  585. in their own right,

  586. but the coming

  587. of the Lord

  588. is going to be

  589. something far more

  590. spectacular,

  591. something we won't

  592. be able

  593. to avoid,

  594. and something

  595. that we need

  596. to be ready for.

  597. What do we believe

  598. of what the Bible

  599. tells us

  600. of his coming?

  601. Do we believe

  602. the very fact

  603. that he is coming?

  604. Are you resting

  605. in his word?

  606. Do you see it

  607. as truth,

  608. and do you have faith

  609. in the Lord?

  610. Are you looking forward

  611. to that day

  612. of the Lord's return?

  613. That day

  614. when we will gaze

  615. in the beauty

  616. of the Lord?

  617. The book of Revelation

  618. again says,

  619. surely I am coming soon.

  620. The writer of Revelation

  621. says,

  622. Amen.

  623. Come, Lord Jesus.

  624. There's a sense

  625. of excitement.

  626. There's a sense

  627. of anticipation.

  628. Come, Lord Jesus.

  629. Are you ready

  630. for that yourself?

  631. Well, that's what

  632. Paul is addressing

  633. here as he writes

  634. to the Thessalonians,

  635. and we're going

  636. to consider it

  637. under three headings

  638. this morning.

  639. Three things

  640. I want us to see

  641. as Paul writes

  642. these words,

  643. in particular

  644. in verse 1 to 3

  645. of chapter 2.

  646. First of all,

  647. do not doubt

  648. his coming.

  649. Secondly,

  650. do not be anxious

  651. about his coming.

  652. And then thirdly,

  653. do be ready

  654. for his coming.

  655. Do not doubt

  656. his coming.

  657. Do not be anxious

  658. about his coming.

  659. But do be ready

  660. for his coming.

  661. The first thing is,

  662. do not doubt

  663. his coming.

  664. As you read

  665. chapter 2

  666. of 2 Thessalonians,

  667. you can read

  668. through it,

  669. we come to some

  670. of Paul's

  671. deepest teachings

  672. here

  673. in terms of

  674. trying to find

  675. a way of understanding

  676. just what he's speaking

  677. about.

  678. And when he's speaking

  679. here about the coming

  680. of the Lord

  681. and what that entails,

  682. there's many things

  683. here that you maybe

  684. immediately

  685. focus in on.

  686. And you ask

  687. questions about.

  688. It's only natural

  689. for us.

  690. For example,

  691. at the end

  692. of chapter 3,

  693. there's this subject,

  694. this issue of the man

  695. of lawlessness

  696. being revealed.

  697. And the question is,

  698. well,

  699. who is this?

  700. Well,

  701. that's for another day.

  702. But we can often

  703. focus in on a chapter

  704. or a verse in Scripture

  705. and we can get

  706. sidetracked

  707. from the main issue.

  708. We can get distracted

  709. from the main issue.

  710. And the subject

  711. that he's speaking

  712. about here,

  713. the coming of the Lord,

  714. it's one of these

  715. subjects that is easy

  716. to get sidetracked

  717. in and just to debate

  718. about and things

  719. that we're not

  720. really understanding.

  721. We're putting forward

  722. our own maybe theories,

  723. we're speculating

  724. as to things,

  725. what might be.

  726. And ultimately,

  727. we lose sight

  728. of the importance

  729. of the matter.

  730. You think about

  731. the day of the coming

  732. of the Lord

  733. and how it's been spoken

  734. about down

  735. through the years.

  736. In almost every generation,

  737. it's been speculated

  738. about that someone

  739. has this vision

  740. or this revelation

  741. that the day

  742. of the Lord's return

  743. is going to be

  744. such and such a date.

  745. It's gone on

  746. for years

  747. and generations.

  748. You even see it

  749. in the Scripture itself.

  750. Here,

  751. they're speculating

  752. that it's already been.

  753. And it's something

  754. that goes on

  755. all the time.

  756. You know,

  757. convinced they know

  758. whether this is bound

  759. to be now

  760. when the Lord returns.

  761. And as you read

  762. Matthew chapter 24,

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  763. you maybe read things there

  764. and you're drawn

  765. into this idea,

  766. well,

  767. surely this now

  768. is when the Lord

  769. will return.

  770. It speaks about

  771. times of war

  772. and rumors of war

  773. and all of these things

  774. that are going

  775. to take place,

  776. earthquakes,

  777. famines,

  778. and we see it

  779. all the time

  780. when we start

  781. to speculate,

  782. well,

  783. surely now

  784. the Lord

  785. is going to return

  786. and we can start

  787. speculating

  788. about these things.

  789. But is that

  790. the most important thing

  791. to talk about

  792. in the midst of it?

  793. To start speculating

  794. about,

  795. well,

  796. will he come just now?

  797. Will it be imminent?

  798. Is it maybe something

  799. that's just way off

  800. in the future?

  801. When the reality is

  802. we don't know.

  803. We don't know.

  804. But what it's all doing

  805. is reminding us

  806. that we should be

  807. drawing near to God.

  808. We should be coming

  809. to God

  810. in a closer way.

  811. We should be seeing

  812. the challenges

  813. and difficulties

  814. all around us

  815. which are many

  816. and escalating

  817. as it seems

  818. all the time

  819. just now.

  820. When you think

  821. of the Middle East

  822. and the Ukraine

  823. and the Far East

  824. and our own nation,

  825. the West as we call it,

  826. there's chaos

  827. of all different kinds.

  828. All the rumors

  829. and things

  830. that the Bible

  831. is speaking about

  832. in Matthew 24,

  833. we're almost seeing them

  834. just now

  835. on a daily basis.

  836. Are we just

  837. pushing that away

  838. or is it bringing us

  839. closer to the Lord?

  840. As Paul is writing

  841. to the Thessalonians,

  842. they themselves

  843. were living

  844. in difficult days.

  845. They were afflicted.

  846. They were persecuted.

  847. From outside,

  848. there was all these people

  849. who were persecuting them

  850. and having a go at them

  851. and bringing false truths

  852. to them.

  853. And within themselves

  854. there were all these doubts

  855. and anxieties

  856. that they naturally had.

  857. And yet,

  858. when Paul writes to them,

  859. he says in verse 3

  860. of chapter 1,

  861. we ought always

  862. to give thanks to God

  863. for you, brothers,

  864. as is right,

  865. because your faith

  866. is growing abundantly

  867. and the love

  868. of every one of you

  869. for one another

  870. is increasing.

  871. This is what he was seeing.

  872. Even in the midst

  873. of all these uncertainties

  874. about the coming

  875. of the Lord,

  876. their faith

  877. was growing abundantly

  878. and the love

  879. of every one of them

  880. for one another

  881. was increasing.

  882. Is that what the Lord

  883. sees with us today?

  884. A faith growing abundantly

  885. and a love

  886. for one another

  887. increasing.

  888. The day of the Lord's coming

  889. is without doubt,

  890. but how are we approaching it?

  891. How are we living in a day

  892. when we don't have the answers,

  893. but we know it is true

  894. that he is coming?

  895. What are we focusing on?

  896. Well,

  897. things in this world

  898. will shake us

  899. and things in the church

  900. will shake us,

  901. but when Christ is our rock,

  902. then we have a security,

  903. a certainty.

  904. The Thessalonians

  905. were being told

  906. that the day of the Lord

  907. had already come,

  908. but Paul is assuring them

  909. that it hasn't,

  910. but he is also assuring them

  911. that it will.

  912. You know,

  913. today the problem

  914. of the coming of the Lord

  915. is almost the opposite

  916. to what they had

  917. in the day of the Thessalonians

  918. when they were being taught

  919. that he had already come.

  920. The problem today is

  921. that he has not come

  922. and that people think,

  923. well,

  924. he probably isn't.

  925. One was bringing doubt

  926. into their minds

  927. that he had already come.

  928. Today,

  929. the doubt is in our mind

  930. that he's not going to come

  931. because surely after

  932. 2,000 years or more,

  933. he would have come,

  934. he would have brought peace

  935. to this world,

  936. but it hasn't happened,

  937. so we can push it away.

  938. But what's the answer

  939. in both?

  940. Well,

  941. it is faith.

  942. Faith is the key here.

  943. Faith

  944. is what we need.

  945. And that's what Paul

  946. is thanking God

  947. that the Thessalonians had.

  948. Your faith is growing abundantly.

  949. It is ours.

  950. It is yours growing abundantly

  951. in confidence in God's Word.

  952. One commentator puts it

  953. very helpfully.

  954. He says,

  955. rather than having

  956. an understanding

  957. of everything

  958. that every verse says,

  959. it is to have anchor points.

  960. Anchor points.

  961. Things that we can focus in on

  962. and hold firmly to that.

  963. Keep us secure.

  964. Yes,

  965. there's things

  966. we don't have answers for,

  967. but there's things

  968. that we can have certainty in,

  969. and one is

  970. the day of the Lord's coming.

  971. He will come.

  972. In Matthew 24,

  973. Jesus says later on

  974. in that chapter

  975. in verse 43,

  976. but know this,

  977. that if the master

  978. of the house

  979. had known

  980. in what part of the night

  981. the thief was coming,

  982. he would have stayed awake

  983. and would not have let

  984. his house be broken into.

  985. Therefore,

  986. you also must be ready,

  987. for the Son of Man

  988. is coming

  989. at an hour

  990. when you do not expect.

  991. Again,

  992. it's so clear there.

  993. Jesus himself,

  994. the Son of Man

  995. is coming

  996. at an hour

  997. when you do not expect.

  998. That is our anchor point.

  999. The Lord is coming,

  1000. and that

  1001. we should not doubt.

  1002. So we see

  1003. Paul's

  1004. pastoral heart

  1005. here.

  1006. His concern

  1007. for the people

  1008. is that they

  1009. hold firm

  1010. to this fact

  1011. that he is coming.

  1012. The second thing

  1013. we see here

  1014. is that they are

  1015. not to be anxious

  1016. about his coming.

  1017. Now,

  1018. concerning the coming

  1019. of the Lord,

  1020. Jesus Christ,

  1021. and our being gathered

  1022. together to him,

  1023. we ask you,

  1024. brothers,

  1025. not to be quickly

  1026. shaken

  1027. in mind

  1028. or alarmed.

  1029. Don't be quickly

  1030. shaken in mind

  1031. or alarmed.

  1032. Do not be anxious

  1033. about his coming.

  1034. We live in days

1035. when we can be anxious

  1036. about so many

  1037. different things

  1038. and afraid

  1039. about so many

  1040. different things.

  1041. None of us

  1042. here today

  1043. will be without

  1044. our anxieties,

  1045. without our fears,

  1046. but how do we

  1047. deal with them?

  1048. And especially

1049. we think of this idea

  1050. of the coming

  1051. of the Lord.

  1052. How do we deal

  1053. with anxieties

  1054. and fears

  1055. over that?

  1056. Well,

  1057. again,

  1058. it's to anchor

  1059. ourselves

  1060. in God's word,

  1061. to anchor ourselves

  1062. in the promises

  1063. of God's word.

  1064. Paul's really

  1065. echoing

  1066. what Jesus taught

  1067. in chapter 24

  1068. of Matthew here.

  1069. He's almost

  1070. using the same words.

  1071. Do not be quickly

  1072. shaken in mind

  1073. or alarmed.

  1074. It's just the way

  1075. Jesus spoke

  1076. in that chapter

  1077. as well.

  1078. So it's really,

  1079. don't be anxious

  1080. because you remember

  1081. who you are

  1082. trusting in.

  1083. When you look

  1084. at the situation

  1085. in Thessalonica

  1086. here,

  1087. those who are

  1088. growing in faith,

  1089. your faith

  1090. that is growing

  1091. abundantly,

  1092. how was it

  1093. growing abundantly?

  1094. How was their love

  1095. for one another

  1096. growing abundantly?

  1097. Well,

  1098. it's because

  1099. they were resting

  1100. in the truth

  1101. of God

  1102. to them.

  1103. And there must be

  1104. practical,

  1105. simple,

  1106. practical lessons

  1107. for ourselves

  1108. here today

  1109. as well.

  1110. The role

  1111. of the anchor

  1112. is to keep us

  1113. safe and secure,

  1114. to stop us

  1115. drifting

  1116. and being shipwrecked.

  1117. That's the role

  1118. of the anchor.

  1119. So what is

  1120. the anchor

  1121. of Scripture?

  1122. It's to anchor

  1123. ourselves

  1124. in the foundation

  1125. of truth

  1126. that we have

  1127. in God's Word.

  1128. All the promises

  1129. that are given

  1130. to us.

  1131. And by holding

  1132. on to them,

  1133. by seeing them,

  1134. we end up

  1135. being secure

  1136. in Christ

  1137. and not drifting

  1138. away

  1139. and being tempted

  1140. away by

  1141. false teachings

  1142. or the kind

  1143. of things

  1144. that he's speaking

  1145. of there

  1146. in verse 2

  1147. by a spirit

  1148. or spoken word

  1149. or a letter

  1150. to the effect

  1151. that the day

  1152. of the Lord

  1153. has come

  1154. when we're

  1155. being led

  1156. as straight

  1157. to say,

  1158. no,

  1159. that is not

  1160. what the Word

  1161. of God

  1162. says.

  1163. And to hold

  1164. fast to the Word

  1165. of God.

  1166. And that's what

  1167. Paul was doing

  1168. for the Thessalonians,

  1169. holding them fast

  1170. in the Word

  1171. of God.

  1172. When you think

  1173. of the book

  1174. of Acts,

    Acts 22 chapter mention

  1175. chapter 22,

  1176. after the Lord's

  1177. ascension,

  1178. how were the people

  1179. found in chapter 2?

1180. It says in verse 42,

  1181. they devoted themselves

  1182. to the apostles'

  1183. teaching

  1184. and the fellowship

  1185. to the breaking

  1186. of bread

  1187. and the prayers.

  1188. That was their focus.

1189. That was how they grew.

  1190. That's how the church

  1191. at Thessalonica

  1192. was growing.

  1193. All of these things

  1194. were present

1195. and that's what we are

  1196. to be secure

  1197. in as well.

  1198. Being under the Word,

  1199. being in fellowship

  1200. with one another,

  1201. taking the sacrament,

  1202. prayer.

  1203. When our relationship

  1204. with the Lord

  1205. is right,

  1206. our faith

  1207. and assurance

  1208. grows.

  1209. So we are to

  1210. anchor ourselves

  1211. in the Word

  1212. of God.

  1213. Do not be anxious

  1214. or afraid

  1215. for this day.

  1216. How?

  1217. By being close

  1218. to God,

  1219. by trusting

  1220. in Him,

  1221. by knowing

  1222. who you are

  1223. believing in.

  1224. One commentator

  1225. speaks of the importance

  1226. of both faith

  1227. and perseverance.

  1228. Two things

  1229. that we need

  1230. as Christians.

  1231. Faith

  1232. and perseverance.

  1233. And he speaks

1234. about it in this way.

  1235. The illustration

  1236. of getting into

  1237. a sporting event.

  1238. And he said,

  1239. a person who wants

  1240. to attend

  1241. a game

  1242. in a stadium,

  1243. for example,

  1244. a big football match

  1245. or Six Nations rugby

  1246. or something like that,

1247. if you want to get

  1248. into the stadium

  1249. to watch,

  1250. you've got to pay

  1251. your money

  1252. and when you pay

  1253. your money,

  1254. you receive

  1255. a ticket.

  1256. But he asked

  1257. a question,

  1258. but what gets

  1259. you into the stadium?

  1260. Is it the money

  1261. or the ticket?

  1262. And he said,

  1263. it's both.

  1264. Ultimately,

  1265. the money paid

  1266. is what really

  1267. gets you in,

  1268. but you must

  1269. have the ticket

  1270. as evidence

  1271. that you have

  1272. paid the price.

  1273. And for ourselves

  1274. as Christians,

  1275. the greatest confidence

  1276. we can have

  1277. is that the price

  1278. has been paid

  1279. for us.

  1280. The Lord Jesus

  1281. has paid the price

  1282. for our entry

  1283. into heaven.

  1284. And our ticket

  1285. is faith.

  1286. Faith is a ticket.

  1287. So that by faith

  1288. in the Lord's,

1289. the day of the Lord's

  1290. return,

  1291. we can come

  1292. and say,

  1293. I have believed

  1294. in you.

  1295. I have believed

  1296. that you paid

  1297. the price.

  1298. That in giving

  1299. your life

  1300. on the cross,

  1301. you paid

  1302. the price

  1303. for me.

  1304. The faith

  1305. and the perseverance.

  1306. The price paid

  1307. and the ticket

  1308. shone.

  1309. They both

  1310. go hand

  1311. in hand.

  1312. And when you look

  1313. at the wonderful

  1314. words of the Lord

  1315. Jesus to his

  1316. disciples,

  1317. in John 14,

  1318. there you see

  1319. that Jesus

  1320. was telling them

  1321. do not be anxious.

  1322. What he says

  1323. in verse 1,

  1324. let not your hearts

  1325. be troubled.

  1326. Believe in God,

  1327. believe also in me.

  1328. In my Father's house

  1329. are many rooms.

  1330. And he says,

  1331. I go

  1332. to prepare

  1333. a place

  1334. for you.

  1335. And then

  1336. what does he say?

  1337. That I may

  1338. come again

  1339. and take you

  1340. to be

  1341. with me.

  1342. What wonderful

  1343. words,

  1344. what confidence

  1345. they bring

  1346. to God's

  1347. people.

  1348. Let not

  1349. your hearts

  1350. be troubled.

  1351. Believe in God,

  1352. believe also in me.

  1353. I go

  1354. to prepare

  1355. a place.

  1356. That preparation

  1357. involved his

  1358. going to the cross,

  1359. his rising

  1360. from the grave

  1361. on the third day,

  1362. his ascending

  1363. into heaven,

  1364. and that promise

  1365. that he will

  1366. come again.

  1367. Is that

  1368. what you're

  1369. leaning on?

  1370. Is that the promises

  1371. that you're holding

  1372. on to?

  1373. That he will

  1374. come again.

  1375. Let not your

  1376. hearts be troubled.

  1377. Believe in God,

  1378. believe also

  1379. in me.

  1380. The word

  1381. of God

  1382. is so wonderful

  1383. in the confidence

  1384. and the hope

  1385. that it gives.

  1386. The third

  1387. and final

  1388. thing we want

  1389. to see here

  1390. is we need

  1391. to be ready

  1392. for his

  1393. coming.

  1394. We need

  1395. to be ready

  1396. for his

  1397. coming.

  1398. What is Paul's

  1399. greatest concern

  1400. to the people

  1401. of Thessalonica

  1402. here in both

  1403. chapter 1

  1404. and chapter 2

  1405. as he's speaking

  1406. of the judgment

  1407. at Christ's

  1408. coming,

  1409. where this

  1410. picture is put

  1411. before them

  1412. of the different

  1413. destinations

  1414. of heaven

  1415. and hell.

  1416. What's his

  1417. concern?

  1418. As he comes

  1419. into chapter 2

  1420. concerning

  1421. the coming

  1422. of the Lord,

  1423. it's that they

  1424. be ready.

  1425. That they be

  1426. ready for it.

  1427. When you see

  1428. what he is

  1429. teaching them,

  1430. you see

  1431. the purpose

  1432. behind it

  1433. is that they

  1434. might believe

  1435. and be ready

  1436. to have assurance

  1437. in the truth

  1438. of God's

  1439. word.

  1440. As we see,

  1441. the Thessalonians

  1442. will be,

  1443. these doubts

  1444. will be put

  1445. into their mind

  1446. that this day

  1447. had already

  1448. happened.

  1449. And for

  1450. ourselves today,

  1451. it's almost like

  1452. the opposite is true.

  1453. It's almost

  1454. that this day

  1455. is not going

  1456. to happen.

  1457. That this day

  1458. surely would

  1459. have happened

  1460. by now.

  1461. And it's easy

  1462. to waste time

  1463. speculating

  1464. about the

  1465. coming of the

  1466. Lord.

  1467. Will it,

  1468. won't it,

  1469. or when?

  1470. But instead,

  1471. we are to heed

  1472. the warnings

  1473. of his word.

  1474. Like I was saying

  1475. to the children

  1476. earlier on,

  1477. we're under

  1478. a weather

  1479. warning just now.

  1480. And we look

  1481. out and we're

  1482. wondering what's

  1483. going to come.

  1484. What's it going

  1485. to be like?

  1486. It's the same

  1487. every time,

  1488. whether it's a

  1489. gale or snow

  1490. and ice,

  1491. we're wondering

  1492. how bad's it

  1493. going to be?

  1494. What damage

  1495. will it cause?

  1496. But what about

  1497. the warning

  1498. of the Lord's

  1499. return?

  1500. Are you

  1501. heeding

  1502. that warning

  1503. today?

  1504. He's going

  1505. to come.

  1506. That he has

  1507. told us.

  1508. He's going

  1509. to come

  1510. like a thief

  1511. in the night.

  1512. You don't

  1513. know the

  1514. moment,

  1515. but are you

  1516. ready?

  1517. To know

  1518. he is coming

  1519. should motivate

  1520. us,

  1521. should drive

  1522. us to

  1523. himself,

  1524. and should

  1525. drive us in

  1526. everything that

  1527. we do as a

  1528. people.

  1529. The urgency

  1530. of this,

  1531. the very fact

  1532. that he is

  1533. coming and we

  1534. don't know

  1535. when,

  1536. what are we

  1537. doing to

  1538. tell others?

  1539. What are we

  1540. doing to

  1541. warn others?

  1542. There's a

  1543. story told

  1544. of an

  1545. American

  1546. colonel,

  1547. his name

  1548. was Colonel

  1549. Davenport,

  1550. and he was

  1551. one of the

  1552. speakers to

  1553. the House

  1554. of Representatives

  1555. in America

  1556. and Connecticut.

  1557. And on

  1558. this day in

  1559. May,

  1560. May the

  1561. 19th,

  1562. 1780,

  1563. there was

  1564. this meeting

  1565. taking place

  1566. of the House

  1567. of Representatives

  1568. in Hartford,

  1569. America.

  1570. It's like our

  1571. Parliament

  1572. meeting.

  1573. And as

  1574. this meeting

  1575. was going

  1576. on,

  1577. it was

  1578. June the

  1579. day,

  1580. and yet

  1581. the sky

  1582. just suddenly

  1583. started to

  1584. get darker

  1585. and darker,

  1586. to such an

  1587. extent that

  1588. some of those

  1589. in the meeting

  1590. started looking

  1591. outside and

  1592. just amazed

  1593. by the darkness

  1594. that had come

  1595. so quickly.

  1596. And the fear

  1597. that came upon

  1598. them was this,

  1599. that the day

  1600. of the Lord

  1601. was coming,

  1602. that this

  1603. was it.

  1604. And they

  1605. started calling

  1606. for the meeting

  1607. to be adjourned,

  1608. the meeting

  1609. to end,

  1610. because this

  1611. was so serious.

  1612. But Colonel

  1613. Davenport,

  1614. it said,

  1615. he calmed

  1616. the meeting.

  1617. And he

  1618. said this,

  1619. the day of

  1620. judgment

  1621. is either

  1622. approaching

  1623. or it is

  1624. not.

  1625. If it is

  1626. not,

  1627. there is no

  1628. cause for

  1629. adjournment.

  1630. If it is,

  1631. I choose

  1632. to be found

  1633. doing my

  1634. duty.

  1635. Therefore,

  1636. I wish

  1637. that candles

  1638. be brought.

  1639. The darkness

  1640. was ominous.

  1641. But he said,

  1642. well,

  1643. if this is

  1644. the Lord's

  1645. return,

  1646. I want to

  1647. be found

  1648. doing my

  1649. duty.

  1650. Rather than

  1651. fearing what

  1652. is to come,

  1653. you are to

  1654. be faithful

  1655. till Christ's

  1656. return.

  1657. And instead

  1658. of fearing

  1659. the dark,

  1660. we are to

  1661. remember the

  1662. light that we

  1663. have in Christ

  1664. and his

  1665. gospel.

  1666. And we are

  1667. to watch

  1668. and wait

  1669. for his

  1670. return.

  1671. The reality

  1672. of heaven

  1673. and hell

  1674. is clear

  1675. before us

  1676. in the

  1677. scriptures.

  1678. And the

  1679. reality of

  1680. the day of

  1681. judgment

  1682. is clear

  1683. before us

  1684. in

  1685. scripture.

  1686. The reality

  1687. of the

  1688. coming of

  1689. the Lord

  1690. is clear

  1691. before us

  1692. in scripture.

  1693. The question

  1694. is,

  1695. are you

  1696. ready?

  1697. Are you

  1698. ready?

  1699. The day

  1700. is coming

  1701. when the

  1702. sky will

  1703. light with

  1704. flaming fire

  1705. for all

  1706. people to

  1707. see and

  1708. the Lord

  1709. will come.

  1710. Some will

  1711. cry on that

  1712. day to the

  1713. mountains,

  1714. fall on

  1715. top of

  1716. them because

  1717. they will

  1718. be so

  1719. afraid.

  1720. They will

  1721. not be

  1722. ready for

  1723. the day

  1724. to appear

  1725. before the

  1726. Lord.

  1727. But for

  1728. us may

  1729. it be a

  1730. day when

  1731. we delight,

  1732. a delight

  1733. that we

  1734. will see

  1735. the beauty

  1736. of the

  1737. Lord and

  1738. gaze on

  1739. him,

  1740. for we

  1741. are ready

  1742. for it.

  1743. But while

  1744. we have

  1745. time and

  1746. opportunity,

  1747. as we

  1748. think of

  1749. the coming

  1750. of the

  1751. Lord and

  1752. the day

  1753. is going

  1754. to come,

  1755. and as we

  1756. think that

  1757. there are

  1758. people out

  1759. there who

  1760. know nothing

  1761. of it or

  1762. who are not

  1763. interested in

  1764. it, the

  1765. reality of

  1766. heaven and

  1767. hell and

  1768. the judgment

  1769. and the

  1770. coming of

  1771. the Lord

  1772. should drive

  1773. us in

  1774. telling others

  1775. that he

  1776. is coming

  1777. and to be

  1778. ready.

  1779. May the

  1780. coming of

  1781. the Lord

  1782. not be

  1783. something.

  1784. We just

  1785. speculate about

  1786. the things

  1787. that we do

  1788. not understand,

  1789. but may it

  1790. instead be a

  1791. day that we

  1792. see is

  1793. true and

  1794. is the

  1795. great hope

  1796. of the

  1797. Christian,

  1798. but is our

  1799. great motivation

  1800. in reaching

  1801. out with

  1802. the gospel.

  1803. Let us

  1804. pray.

  1805. Our

  1806. Father in

  1807. heaven, we

  1808. thank you for

  1809. your word

  1810. that is

  1811. truth, and

  1812. even though

  1813. the world

  1814. will cast

  1815. so many

  1816. doubts over

  1817. it, and

  1818. tell us that

  1819. it is not

  1820. true.

  1821. Tell us that

  1822. if the Lord

  1823. was going to

  1824. come, we

  1825. would have

  1826. done so by

  1827. now.

  1828. Help us to

  1829. realize that

  1830. that was

  1831. true in

  1832. the days of

  1833. our Lord,

  1834. in the days

  1835. of the

  1836. apostles, and

  1837. down through

  1838. all the

  1839. generations, but

  1840. it doesn't

  1841. mean that

  1842. it's not

  1843. something to

  1844. be believed

  1845. in.

  1846. For your

  1847. word tells

  1848. us that the

  1849. day of the

  1850. Lord will

  1851. come like a

  1852. thief in the

  1853. night, and

  1854. help us to

  1855. be ready, and

  1856. help us to

  1857. be urgent in

  1858. our work for

  1859. the gospel, to

  1860. tell others to

  1861. be ready for

  1862. it too.

  1863. But Lord, we

  1864. thank you that

  1865. it's a day that

  1866. your people can

  1867. look forward

  1868. to, a day of

  1869. joy, a day of

  1870. delight, when we

  1871. will gaze on the

  1872. beauty of the

  1873. Lord.

  1874. And so we

  1875. pray, Lord, that

  1876. you will bless

  1877. your word to

  1878. us, and go

  1879. before us in

  1880. the rest of

  1881. this day,

  1882. pardoning our

  1883. sins, in

  1884. Jesus' name.

  1885. Amen.

  1886. We're going

  1887. to conclude by

  1888. singing to

  1889. God's praise in

  1890. Psalm 33

  1891. again, page

  1892. 246 of the

  1893. psalm book,

  1894. Psalm 33,

  1895. page 246.

  1896. We'll sing from

  1897. verse 18 down

  1898. to verse 22.

  1899. These three

  1900. stanzas,

  1901. Behold, on

  1902. those that do

  1903. in fear, the

  1904. Lord has said

  1905. as I, even

  1906. those who on

  1907. his mercy do

  1908. with confidence

  1909. rely.

  1910. We'll sing

  1911. these verses

  1912. to God's

  1913. praise.

  1914. Amen.

  1915. Behold, on

  1916. those that do

  1917. him fear, the

  1918. Lord has said

  1919. his eyes, he

  1920. those who on

  1921. his mercy do

  1922. with confidence

  1923. rely.

  1924. From death to free

  1925. their soul in death,

  1926. life unto them

  1927. to yield,

  1928. her soul doth

  1929. wait upon

  1930. the Lord,

  1931. he is

  1932. our help

  1933. and shield,

  1934. our heart

  1935. our heart

  1936. shall joyful

  1937. be.

  1938. Lord, let

  1939. thy mercy

  1940. be on us

  1941. as we

  1942. do

  1943. hope

  1944. in thee.

  1945. After the

  1946. benediction, I'll

  1947. go to the door

  1948. to my right.

  1949. We'll close with

  1950. the benediction.

  1951. Now may grace,

  1952. mercy, and peace

  1953. from God,

  1954. Father, Son, and

  1955. Holy Spirit

  1956. rest upon

  1957. and abide

  1958. with you all

  1959. now and

  1960. forevermore.

  1961. Amen.

  1962. to

  1963. amen.

  1964. Amen.

  1965. Amen.

  1966. Thank you.
