  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 93 on the Scottish Psalter.

  3. Psalm 93, the whole of Psalm, page 354.

  4. The tune is Irish.

  5. The Lord doth reign and clothed is he with majesty most bright,

  6. his works to show him clothed to be and girt about with might.

  7. So we'll sing the whole of this Psalm to God's praise.

  8. The Lord doth reign and clothed is he with majesty most bright,

  9. his works to show him clothed to be

  10. and girt about with might.

  11. The world is all so established that it cannot depart.

  12. Thy throne is fixed of hope and love from everlasting heart.

  13. The floods, O Lord, have lifted up, they lifted up their voice.

  14. And made a mighty noise.

  15. But yet the Lord doth is on high,

  16. is more of might by far,

  17. than the noise of many waters is,

  18. our great sea bellows are.

  19. Thy testimonies, everyone,

  20. in faithfulness excel,

  21. and holiness forevermore,

  22. thy heart becouled as well.

  23. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  24. Let us pray.

  25. Our Father in heaven,

  26. as we gather in your name this day,

  27. we do thank you for your word.

  28. We thank you that we can read from it,

  29. that we can sing praise to you,

  30. that we can lift our voices up to you.

  31. And we have been reminded in the psalm that we have sung,

  32. that your voice is a mighty voice,

  33. greater than all the noise of the waters,

  34. the waves, the storms around us.

  35. We thank you that though we hear these things,

  36. that you are one who is more powerful

  37. and mightier than all of these things.

  38. And we pray today, Lord,

  39. that we will know your voice.

  40. As we read your word,

  41. we will see it as your word.

  42. As we hear it, Lord,

  43. that you would bless it to us all.

  44. We thank you that you speak to each and every one of us,

  45. the youngest to the oldest,

  46. that there are none of us who are left out of worship.

  47. There is none of us who are left out of this service.

  48. But we gather together as one

  49. to praise you as our Lord and as our God.

  50. And we ask, oh Lord,

  51. for your protection over us today.

  52. We especially think of the winds outside

  53. at this time and pray that as we come and go,

  54. that you will protect us and keep us.

  55. We thank you for all who are there to help us

  56. in these times as well.

  57. We pray for many who will be out and about

  58. in difficult conditions,

  59. even maybe at this time.

  60. Coast Guard Services,

  61. helping people in need,

  62. both on land and at sea,

  63. helping to protect us during these times.

  64. And we pray, Lord,

  65. your protection over them.

  66. We thank you, Lord,

  67. to be able to worship you this day,

  68. to be worshiping you in this place

  69. and with a peace to enjoy it.

  70. And we ask, oh Lord,

  71. that you would bless all that is done,

  72. both here and in the Sunday school

  73. and the tweenies and creche as well, Lord.

  74. Protect our young ones, Lord.

  75. Be with them each one.

  76. Be with us as families and friends

  77. and as a congregation together.

  78. May you hear all our prayers

  79. and watch over us in Jesus' name

  80. as we ask all of these things in his name

  81. for the pardon of our sins.

  82. Amen.

  83. It's good that there's a number of young people present,

  84. and I'm sure many others may be tuning in online as well.

  85. So I want to ask you a question.

  86. Any of the young people here,

  87. do you enjoy riddles?

  88. Trying to work out what a riddle is trying to say.

  89. A riddle is a number of words put together

  90. and they maybe don't make sense at first

  91. and you're just trying to work out

  92. what does it actually mean.

  93. So I want to share a riddle with you

  94. and see if you can work this one out.

  95. See what it's talking about.

  96. And the riddle goes like this.

  97. It says,

  98. you can't own it,

  99. but you can use it.

  100. You can't keep it,

  101. but you can spend it.

  102. Once you have lost it,

  103. you can never get it back.

  104. So that's the riddle.

  105. I wonder if anybody knows what it means.

  106. You can't own it,

  107. but you can use it.

  108. You can't keep it,

  109. but you can spend it.

  110. Once you have lost it,

  111. you can never get it back.

  112. Hands up if you know what the answer is.

  113. Don't want you to shout out the answer,

  114. but there's a few hands going up.

  115. Mostly adults though.

  116. Any of the young folks,

  117. do you know the answer?

  118. It's time.

  119. There's one upstairs there

  120. that's got the hand up,

  121. right up in the air.

  122. It's time.

  123. You can't own time,

  124. but you can use it.

  125. You can't keep it,

  126. but you can spend it.

  127. You can spend time

  128. on lots of different things.

  129. Once you've lost it,

  130. you can never get it back.

  131. So once the time has gone,

  132. you can never get it back.

  133. Time is free,

  134. but time is priceless.

  135. So important that we use

  136. our time wisely.

  137. What do you use most of your time on?

  138. Hands up if it's sleeping.

  139. I'm sure there's quite a few people

  140. who spend a lot of time sleeping.

  141. What about eating?

  142. Maybe not so much.

  143. What about sitting on your phone

  144. or tablet or watching television?

  145. Lots of time, I'm sure,

  146. spent there, is it?

  147. We all spend time

  148. doing lots of different things.

  149. But the Bible reminds us

  150. that just like the riddle there,

  151. trying to understand what it means,

  152. sometimes that's what the Bible

  153. can seem like to ourselves as well.

  154. It just seems like words

  155. that are brought together,

  156. sometimes they don't really make sense.

  157. But the Bible says in Psalm 90, verse 12,

    Psalms 90:12

  158. teach us to number our days

  159. that we may get a heart of wisdom.

  160. Now maybe that sounds like a riddle

  161. at first as well.

  162. Teach us to number our days

  163. so that we may get a heart of wisdom.

  164. What does that mean?

  165. Well, it means to use our time wisely,

  166. to number our days,

  167. to see that our days

  168. are soon going to go past,

  169. past in a blink.

  170. And once that time has passed,

  171. we can't get that time back.

  172. So time is precious.

  173. Time is important.

  174. And we need to number our days,

  175. which means we take account

  176. of all of our days.

  177. We can think of how many days

  178. have gone past.

  179. We can count them.

  180. How many days ahead?

  181. We don't know.

  182. We don't have the answer.

  183. So the Psalm says,

  184. get a heart of wisdom.

  185. Time teaches us that it's going to come

  186. to an end at some point.

  187. So it's important that we make

  188. the best use of our time,

  189. not wasting our time.

  190. There are things that we have to do,

  191. but we should always make time for God.

  192. Make time for his word.

  193. Make time for finding understanding

  194. of what he's saying to us in his word.

  195. Lord, teach us, Lord,

  196. to have a heart of wisdom,

  197. because that's what we need

  198. for every day,

  199. a heart to be wise with the Lord,

  200. to make the best use of our time

  201. before our time is past.

  202. So may God help us

  203. in all the time that we have

  204. to listen to him

  205. and to seek a heart of wisdom.

  206. We're going to say the Lord's prayer

  207. together now.

  208. Our Father, we chart in heaven,

  209. hallowed be thy name.

  210. Thy kingdom come.

  211. Thy will be done on earth

  212. as it is in heaven.

  213. Give us this day our daily bread

  214. and forgive us our debts

  215. as we forgive our debtors.

  216. And lead us not into temptation,

  217. but deliver us from evil.

  218. For thine is the kingdom,

  219. the power and the glory forever.

  220. Amen.

  221. Amen.

  222. Well, we're going to sing again

  223. to God's praise,

  224. this time in Psalm 32.

  225. Again, the Scottish Psalter version,

  226. Psalm 32,

  227. page 244 of the psalm books.

  228. Psalm 32,

  229. page 244.

  230. We're going to sing from verse 7

  231. down to verse 11.

  232. We're going to sing from verse 7 to 11

  233. on the tune of Spore.

  234. We stand to sing to God's praise.

  235. The Lord,

  236. O heart,

  237. my hiding place,

  238. thou shalt

  239. from trouble

  240. keep me free.

  241. thou wisdoms of deliverance,

  242. thou shalt comfort

  243. shall compass me.

  244. I will instruct thee

  245. and thee teach

  246. the way that thou shalt go.

  247. And when my eye upon thee set,

  248. I will direction show.

  249. Then be not like the hearts or mules

  250. which do not understand,

  251. whose powers as they come near to thee,

  252. a bridal must command.

  253. Come to the man that wicked is,

  254. his sorrows shall abound,

  255. but him that trusteth in the Lord,

  256. mercy shall come as crown.

  257. yea,

  258. yea,

  259. righteous in the Lord be glad,

  260. in him do ye rejoice,

  261. O ye that upright are in heart,

  262. for joy lift up your voice.

  263. Let us again come to God in prayer.

  264. Let us pray.

  265. Lord, our gracious God,

  266. as we approach your word,

  267. we thank you that as we open it up,

  268. that we come seeking your help

  269. to understand words

  270. that can sometimes seem like a riddle

  271. to ourselves.

  272. We thank you that you are able

  273. by your spirit to reveal to us

  274. the many promises and precious,

  275. precious promises that there are

  276. in your word.

  277. We thank you that you do not leave us

  278. to stumble around your word

  279. unable to understand,

  280. but that you provide so many things

  281. and methods to help us to understand.

  282. We thank you that we have the liberty

  283. and freedom to be under the preaching

  284. of the gospel.

  285. We thank you that we have your word

  286. in a language that we can understand.

  287. We thank you that in a day of technology,

  288. we have so many means to hear your word

  289. broken down for us,

  290. to hear it read to us,

  291. to hear it explained to us

  292. even what the very smallest of words

  293. might mean in it.

  294. We are a multitude of great hosts of things

  295. to help us to understand your word.

  296. But we know that the time that we have

  297. is precious and that we are to make

  298. the most of it.

  299. And we are so easily distracted from your word.

  300. We spend so much time maybe on other things.

  301. We can waste so much time as it is.

  302. But yet, Lord, we thank you that you are able

  303. to give us a spirit to hunger and thirst for your word,

  304. to hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  305. and to help us to see and understand

  306. all that you are teaching us through your word

  307. and how to apply it to our lives

  308. and to the world in which we live.

  309. For we can look around us and see so many troubles,

  310. even as in the Psalms that we have sung.

  311. There is trouble around the psalmist

  312. in so many different ways,

  313. and yet he is able to say that you are a hiding place for him,

  314. that you are a place of deliverance for him.

  315. And we thank you, Lord, that we know that for ourselves

  316. and so many of us.

  317. And we pray that together we would all come to know

  318. and experience that wonderful deliverance

  319. that you offer through your Son, Christ Jesus.

  320. that when we are blind and ignorant to you,

  321. that you are the one who is able to open our eyes

  322. and to help us to understand

  323. and to go on gaining understanding

  324. and sharing our understanding with others.

  325. And so we pray you'll bless our time together this day.

  326. We pray you'll watch over us in it,

  327. that you will guide us by your Spirit in all that we do

  328. and all that we say.

  329. That even as we offer up our prayers at this time together,

  330. the spoken prayer and the ones uttered from all our hearts,

  331. you know every prayer that we offer up at this time.

  332. It's not just one, but many.

  333. For many different people and situations,

  334. from many different hearts,

  335. we offer up our prayer to you.

  336. Hearts that are broken,

  337. hearts that may be full of joy,

  338. and yet hearts that can know the wonderful peace

  339. that you are able to give.

  340. And we ask, O Lord, that together as we pray,

  341. that you will remind us that when we come in faith,

  342. believing in you,

  343. reminding ourselves that you hear our every prayer

  344. through the name of Jesus Christ as we come,

  345. and that your answer, O Lord,

  346. though it may be different to what we ask for,

  347. we commit ourselves, Lord, to you who knows best,

  348. even the things that we do not understand

  349. or cannot comprehend, O Lord,

  350. help us to know your presence with us in these things as well,

  351. to know your grace in every aspect of our lives.

  352. And so we pray for your cause, Lord, near and far.

  353. We pray for your church,

  354. that you will build us up as a people here and far and wide,

  355. that you will look down upon us in your great mercy,

  356. that you will look down upon our world, O Lord, in mercy,

  357. that as we see so much turmoil around us,

  358. as we see so many things that we have no influence or control over,

  359. as we feel powerless in so many situations,

  360. yet, O Lord, remind us of the power that you have.

  361. Mightier than the voice of the waves is our Lord.

  362. And we thank you for that,

  363. that where there are storms of so many kinds,

  364. be they the natural storms we see around us,

  365. or the physical storms of life,

  366. the storms of war, famine, drought,

  367. earthquakes, volcanoes,

  368. all of these powerful elements that we see around us.

  369. We thank you that you are mightier than all,

  370. and that your voice is able to bring a stop to all of these things,

  371. to change all of these things.

  372. And yet, O Lord, in a world in which we live,

  373. we look to our own wisdom or wisdom of leaders,

  374. leaders who so often have no thought of you.

  375. And so we pray for them, Lord,

  376. that you will come,

  377. a mercy upon them and draw them to yourself,

  378. to see that any power they feel they have

  379. is nothing compared to yours,

  380. and that they would come to put their trust in you,

  381. whether that's leaders of our political,

  382. in political spheres,

  383. whether it's royalty,

  384. whether it's leaders in councils,

  385. or whether it's leaders in the church.

  386. We pray, Lord, for you to give us all wisdom,

  387. to give us help,

  388. to give us direction,

  389. to guide our people,

  390. to seek the good of our people,

  391. to seek your blessing upon us.

  392. And so we pray, Lord,

  393. that you will hear all of these prayers in your name.

  394. We pray for every home and family here

  395. and tuning in online as well.

  396. We thank you, Lord,

  397. that we are able to pray for one another

  398. in very different circumstances.

  399. We pray for those who mourn.

  400. We pray your comfort towards them.

  401. We pray for those who are unwell,

  402. whether it's at home or in hospital

  403. or in the care homes we see around us in the town here

  404. or further afield.

  405. We pray, Lord, your blessing on each one

  406. and families who are concerned for loved ones.

  407. We are able to bring our cares to you

  408. and we thank you for that.

  409. We pray, Lord, for your spirit to work around us, Lord,

  410. for those who are maybe well in health

  411. and yet spiritually dead,

  412. dead in their trespasses and sins,

  413. as your word describes.

  414. We pray, Lord, to bring life,

  415. to bring new life into their hearts

  416. and into their souls.

  417. We pray, Lord, that you will awaken us

  418. to our need of the Lord Jesus,

  419. that when we are stumbling and asleep in this world,

  420. we pray for you to awaken us,

  421. awaken us to our greatest need,

  422. the need of deliverance,

  423. the need of a savior,

  424. and to see of every provision that you have made,

  425. that you have provided for us through your son,

  426. who gave his life for his people,

  427. who rose again for our salvation,

  428. who ascended on high to the right hand of God

  429. and who will come again.

  430. We thank you for the hope of the gospel

  431. and we pray, Lord, that you will revive

  432. and stir up that hope in our hearts,

  433. that we will hold it as the dearest,

  434. most precious thing to us.

  435. Lord, look down upon us,

  436. continue with us this day,

  437. be with the preaching of your word

  438. into the evening as well, Lord,

  439. throughout your church today.

  440. May your name be glorified.

  441. May your people praise you

  442. and may sinners be brought to repentance.

  443. We ask all these things,

  444. looking to you as the one who is able to do

  445. so much more than we ask or imagine.

  446. And hear us in all our prayers,

  447. pardon us for all our sins

  448. as we confess them on you.

  449. And all we ask,

  450. we ask in the name of Jesus

  451. and for his glory.

  452. Amen.

  453. We're going to read God's word together now

  454. in the gospel of Mark.

  455. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  456. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  457. We'll take up our reading at verse 11.

  458. And we're reading down to verse 30.

  459. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  460. Mark chapter 8 at verse 11.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  461. You notice at the beginning of the chapter,

  462. there's the account of Jesus feeding the 4,000.

  463. A second time when Jesus had miraculously fed a large crowd of people.

  464. And then following that, we take up our reading at verse 11.

  465. The Pharisees came and began to argue with him,

  466. seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.

  467. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said,

  468. why does this generation seek a sign?

  469. Truly I say to you,

  470. no sign will be given to this generation.

  471. And he left them, got into his boat again,

  472. and went to the other side.

  473. Now they had forgotten to bring bread.

  474. And they had only one loaf with them in the boat.

  475. And he cautioned them saying,

  476. watch out,

  477. beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.

  478. And they began to discuss with one another

  479. the fact that they had no bread.

  480. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them,

  481. why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?

  482. Do you not yet perceive or understand?

  483. Are your hearts hardened?

  484. Having eyes, do you not see?

  485. And having ears, do you not hear?

  486. And do you not remember?

  487. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand,

  488. how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?

  489. They said to him, twelve.

  490. And he said to them,

  491. do you not yet understand?

  492. And they came to Bethsaida,

  493. and some people brought to him a blind man,

  494. and begged him to touch him.

  495. And he took the blind man by the hand,

  496. and led him out of the village.

  497. And when he had spat on his eyes,

  498. and laid his hands on him,

  499. he asked him,

  500. do you see anything?

  501. And he looked up and said,

  502. I see men, but they look like trees walking.

  503. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again,

  504. and he opened his eyes.

  505. His sight was restored,

  506. and he saw everything clearly.

  507. And he sent him to his home,

  508. saying, do not even enter the village.

  509. And Jesus went on with his disciples

  510. to the village of Caesarea Philippi.

  511. And on the way,

  512. he asked his disciples,

  513. who do people say that I am?

  514. And they told him,

  515. John the Baptist,

  516. and others say Elijah,

  517. and others one of the prophets.

  518. And he asked them,

  519. but who do you say that I am?

  520. Peter answered him,

  521. you are the Christ.

  522. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

  523. And so on.

  524. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  525. Before we turn back to look at this passage,

  526. we'll again sing to God's praise in Psalm 146.

  527. In the Sing Psalms version.

  528. Psalm 146.

  529. We'll sing from verse 5 down to verse 10.

  530. Page 191 of the psalm book.

  531. Psalm 146, verse 5,

    Psalms 146:5

  532. the tune of Sussex.

  533. Blessed is the one who truly looks for help to Jacob's God.

  534. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  535. And we see in verse 8 there,

  536. he says,

  537. to the blind the Lord gives sight.

  538. We'll sing these verses 5 to 10 to God's praise.

  539. Amen.

  540. Amen.

  541. Amen.

  542. Blessed is the one who truly looks for help to Jacob's God.

  543. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  544. the Lord.

  545. He who made

  546. the earth and

  547. heaven and the seas

  548. with all their

  549. store,

  550. he who keeps

  551. his every

  552. promise,

  553. who is

  554. faithful

  555. evermore.

  556. He delivers

  557. from

  558. oppression

  559. and

  560. releases the

  561. hungry's

  562. plight. He

  563. releases

  564. those

  565. who prison

  566. to the

  567. blind the Lord

  568. his sight.

  569. Those

  570. who up

  571. the

  572. down he

  573. raises,

  574. our

  575. delights

  576. in

  577. righteousness.

  578. He

  579. protects

  580. and cares

  581. for

  582. strangers,

  583. waitrose

  584. and the

  585. fatherless.

  586. he frustrates

  587. the

  588. wicked

  589. purpose,

  590. so the

  591. Lord

  592. who

  593. endless

  594. days

  595. brings

  596. to

  597. heavenly

  598. generation.

  599. Praise

  600. your

  601. God,

  602. those

  603. high

  604. on

  605. praise.

  606. We can

  607. turn back to

  608. our reading

  609. in Mark's

  610. Gospel,

  611. chapter 8.

  612. And we're

  613. focusing on

  614. most of what we

  615. read, really,

  616. but we're seeing

  617. the account of

  618. the man who was

  619. blind, having

  620. his sight

  621. restored.

  622. And the

  623. question then

  624. that comes

  625. after that

  626. as he's

  627. speaking with

  628. his disciples,

  629. as he's

  630. asking them,

  631. you know,

  632. who do people

  633. say that I

  634. am?

  635. And then he

  636. asks a great

  637. question,

  638. but what

  639. about you?

  640. Who do

  641. you say

  642. that I

  643. am?

  644. Who do

  645. you say

  646. that I

  647. am?

  648. We face

  649. questions,

  650. I'm sure,

  651. every day.

  652. We're asked

  653. different

  654. questions.

  655. Some are

  656. simple

  657. questions that

  658. are maybe

  659. easier to

  660. answer that

  661. don't really

  662. challenge us

  663. deeply.

  664. We are asked

  665. questions maybe

  666. very often during

  667. the day,

  668. what time is

  669. it?

  670. What do you

  671. want for your

  672. dinner?

  673. These kinds of

  674. everyday questions

  675. that we hear

  676. all the time.

  677. But there may

  678. be days when

  679. we're caught

  680. out by a

  681. question,

  682. when we're

  683. asked a

  684. question that

  685. we hadn't

  686. really expected

  687. or anticipated,

  688. we'd perhaps

  689. never really

  690. thought about it

  691. before, but

  692. we're challenged

  693. by it and

  694. we wonder

  695. what kind

  696. of answer

  697. should we

  698. give?

  699. Somebody might

  700. come and ask

  701. you, you

  702. know, what

  703. gives you

  704. real joy

  705. in life?

  706. You think,

  707. well, it's

  708. not really a

  709. question.

  710. I've thought

  711. about a lot,

  712. but I could

  713. probably think

  714. of a number

  715. of different

  716. answers to

  717. give.

  718. Or you might

  719. be asked

  720. another question

  721. from someone,

  722. what keeps

  723. you awake

  724. at night?

  725. And you

  726. think to

  727. yourself,

  728. well, that's

  729. not really

  730. any of your

  731. business.

  732. that's kind

  733. of probing

  734. a little

  735. bit too

  736. deep.

  737. What keeps

  738. me awake

  739. at night

  740. is none

  741. of your

  742. concern.

  743. It's

  744. something that's

  745. very private

  746. to myself.

  747. Our life

  748. is full of

  749. different

  750. questions,

  751. some simple

  752. ones, some

  753. maybe more

  754. deeply probing,

  755. and some

  756. probing right

  757. into our

  758. hearts.

  759. And as you

  760. read through

  761. this chapter,

  762. chapter 8

  763. of Mark's

  764. gospel, you

  765. find that

  766. at different

  767. points,

  768. Jesus is

  769. asking

  770. questions,

  771. asking

  772. questions of

  773. different people

  774. in different

  775. circumstances,

  776. but questions

  777. that are

  778. probing them

  779. into their

  780. hearts, asking

  781. them, you

  782. know, where

  783. are you?

  784. What do you

  785. see as your

  786. greatest need

  787. in life?

  788. If you

  789. glance with

  790. me to

  791. verse 12

  792. there, the

  793. Pharisees were

  794. demanding a

  795. sign from

  796. him, what's

  797. the question

  798. that Jesus

  799. asks of

  800. them?

  801. He sighed

  802. deeply in

  803. his spirit

  804. and said,

  805. why does

  806. this generation

  807. seek a

  808. sign?

  809. Why does

  810. this generation

  811. seek a

  812. sign?

  813. It's almost

  814. like he's

  815. saying, you

  816. have just

  817. seen and

  818. heard of

  819. the feeding

  820. of the

  821. 4,000 in

  822. a miraculous

  823. way, and

  824. this is on

  825. top of other

  826. things that

  827. the Lord has

  828. already done,

  829. and he's

  830. saying, you're

  831. still asking

  832. to see

  833. more.

  834. Have you

  835. not seen

  836. enough and

  837. heard enough

  838. of me?

  839. Why does

  840. this generation

  841. seek a

  842. sign?

  843. Is that a

  844. question that

  845. you've asked

  846. of God?

  847. Show me a

  848. sign, then

  849. I'll believe.

  850. Give me

  851. something that

  852. I can see

  853. for myself, and

  854. then I'll

  855. believe.

  856. When Jesus

  857. is saying to

  858. ourselves, why

  859. as a

  860. generation are

  861. we asking

  862. for more?

  863. When he's

  864. already revealed

  865. and shown

  866. to us so

  867. much of

  868. who he

  869. is,

  870. remembering

  871. this is

  872. before the

  873. greatest sign

  874. of all that

  875. Jesus would

  876. give, as

  877. he gave

  878. his life on

  879. the cross,

  880. and as

  881. he rose

  882. from the

  883. grave, as

  884. he ascended

  885. to heaven,

  886. do we need

  887. any more?

  888. And after

  889. the response

  890. to the

  891. Pharisees

  892. there,

  893. why do

  894. you, this

  895. generation,

  896. seek for

  897. a sign,

  898. he's then

  899. talking to

  900. his disciples,

  901. and the

  902. question, a

  903. very probing

  904. question, he

  905. asks them

  906. there in

  907. verse 21,

  908. do you

  909. not yet

  910. understand?

  911. Do you

  912. not yet

  913. understand?

  914. And then

  915. as you

  916. continue down

  917. into verse

  918. 27 onwards,

  919. he's asking

  920. these two

  921. questions,

  922. who do

  923. people say

  924. that I

  925. am?

  926. In verse

  927. 27, and

  928. then a

  929. more probing

  930. and challenging

  931. question for

  932. them in

  933. verse 29,

  934. but who

  935. do you

  936. say that

  937. I am?

  938. Who do

  939. you say

  940. that I

  941. am?

  942. And in

  943. order to

  944. see the

  945. account of

  946. the man

  947. who was

  948. blind, and

  949. to understand

  950. the healing

  951. of the man

  952. who was

  953. blind, we

  954. have to

  955. see both

  956. what comes

  957. before it

  958. and what

  959. comes after

  960. it, because

  961. that helps

  962. us to

  963. see what

  964. Jesus was

  965. doing as

  966. he healed

  967. this man

  968. who was

  969. blind.

  970. They have

  971. become maybe

  972. complacent in

  973. some ways,

  974. the disciples,

  975. they've been

  976. seeing many

  977. miracles, and

  978. they're just

  979. going on as

  980. if this is

  981. the way it's

  982. always going

  983. to be.

  984. We see

  985. there's a

  986. little conflict

  987. with the

  988. Pharisees as

  989. they're asking

  990. for a sign

  991. there's

  992. confusion

  993. then among

  994. the disciples

  995. as he's

  996. talking to

  997. them about

  998. being aware

  999. of the

  1000. leaven of

  1001. the Pharisees

  1002. and the

  1003. leaven of

  1004. Herod in

  1005. verse 15.

  1006. There's all

  1007. of these

  1008. things going

  1009. on, and

  1010. then you

  1011. come into

  1012. this account

  1013. of the

  1014. blind man

  1015. being healed,

  1016. and it's

  1017. showing us

  1018. that understanding

  1019. takes time.

  1020. So as we

  1021. think of the

  1022. question that

  1023. comes, who

  1024. do you say

  1025. that I am?

  1026. It's a

  1027. question we'll

  1028. all have an

  1029. answer to, but

  1030. it'll be in

  1031. different degrees

  1032. of understanding.

  1033. None of us

  1034. here will ever

  1035. fully understand

  1036. who he is.

  1037. Not this

  1038. side of

  1039. eternity, but

  1040. we should

  1041. always be

  1042. longing to

  1043. understand more

  1044. of who he

  1045. is.

  1046. And that

  1047. should give

  1048. us a certain

  1049. sense of

  1050. help in our

  1051. situation as

  1052. well if we

  1053. think, well

  1054. I'm not a

  1055. believer, I

  1056. don't know

  1057. enough.

  1058. He's

  1059. challenging us

  1060. to say, well

  1061. who is he?

  1062. Do you

  1063. see him as

  1064. the Christ?

  1065. Because that

  1066. is the

  1067. starting point

  1068. of any

  1069. understanding

  1070. of him.

  1071. And it's

  1072. not that

  1073. you'll have

  1074. all the

  1075. answers to

  1076. be able to

  1077. profess his

  1078. name, but

  1079. to understand

  1080. just who

  1081. he is and

  1082. understanding

  1083. comes over

  1084. a period of

  1085. time.

  1086. What's your

  1087. answer to

  1088. the question

  1089. then?

  1090. Who do

  1091. you say

  1092. that he

  1093. is?

  1094. Who do

  1095. you say

  1096. that Jesus

  1097. is today?

  1098. We'll all

  1099. have an

  1100. answer.

  1101. Some will

  1102. confess Jesus

  1103. is Lord.

  1104. Others will

  1105. confess Jesus

  1106. is my

  1107. Lord.

  1108. Others will

  1109. say, well

  1110. Jesus was

  1111. just a good

  1112. man.

  1113. Others will

  1114. say Jesus

  1115. is nothing.

  1116. He's just

  1117. a made

  1118. up story.

  1119. How do

  1120. you answer

  1121. that question

  1122. then?

  1123. Who do

  1124. you say

  1125. that I

  1126. am?

  1127. Well, three

  1128. things we

  1129. want to

  1130. take from

  1131. this passage

  1132. today.

  1133. First of

  1134. all, we

  1135. see

  1136. understanding

  1137. takes time.

  1138. So when

  1139. you're looking

  1140. at the

  1141. account of

  1142. the blind

  1143. man being

  1144. given his

  1145. sight, it

  1146. might seem

  1147. just like a

  1148. little aside

  1149. in between

  1150. the teaching

  1151. that he's

  1152. been given

  1153. to the

  1154. disciples

  1155. beforehand

  1156. and then

  1157. these great

  1158. questions that

  1159. he's asking

  1160. them as they

  1161. went on

  1162. their way to

  1163. the village

  1164. of Caesarea

  1165. Philippi.

  1166. Another

  1167. healing is

  1168. just maybe

  1169. a little

  1170. aside.

  1171. As you're

  1172. going through

  1173. Mark's

  1174. gospel, you

  1175. see there's

  1176. a number of

  1177. different

  1178. miracles that

  1179. happen, and

  1180. especially

  1181. healings.

  1182. You see it

  1183. again and

  1184. again throughout

  1185. the gospel of

  1186. Mark.

  1187. So is this

  1188. just another

  1189. healing?

  1190. Do we just

  1191. become complacent

  1192. and think

  1193. very little

  1194. of it?

  1195. Or do we

  1196. see that here

  1197. he is really

  1198. teaching his

  1199. disciples and

  1200. teaching us

  1201. how we come

  1202. to understand

  1203. the Lord

  1204. more and

  1205. more?

  1206. If you look

  1207. at verse

  1208. 17 and

  1209. 18, they're

  1210. Jesus aware

  1211. of what they're

  1212. speaking about.

  1213. He says to

  1214. them in

  1215. verse 17,

  1216. why are you

  1217. discussing the

  1218. fact that

  1219. you have

  1220. no bread?

  1221. Do you

  1222. not yet

  1223. perceive or

  1224. understand?

  1225. Are your

  1226. hearts

  1227. hardened?

  1228. Three questions

  1229. he asks them

  1230. in a row

  1231. there.

  1232. Three questions.

  1233. Why are you

  1234. discussing the

  1235. fact that you

  1236. have no bread?

  1237. Is this really

  1238. a big issue

  1239. considering just

  1240. what you've

  1241. just seen,

  1242. the feeding

  1243. of the

  1244. 4,000?

  1245. Do you

  1246. not yet

  1247. perceive or

  1248. understand?

  1249. Do you

  1250. not understand

  1251. who I

  1252. am?

  1253. Are your

  1254. hearts

  1255. still

  1256. hardened?

  1257. That's a

  1258. searching

  1259. question.

  1260. And that's

  1261. the basis

  1262. of Jesus'

  1263. healing,

  1264. this man

  1265. at Bethsaida.

  1266. This question,

  1267. do you

  1268. not yet

  1269. understand?

  1270. We might

  1271. feel as if

  1272. we can

  1273. see things

  1274. clearly in

  1275. this world,

  1276. but more

  1277. and more

  1278. as we look

  1279. to the

  1280. scripture,

  1281. we see

  1282. there are

  1283. so many

  1284. things that

  1285. we don't

  1286. understand.

  1287. And when

  1288. you look at

  1289. this miracle,

  1290. the man's

  1291. sight wasn't

  1292. restored

  1293. immediately.

  1294. He goes

  1295. from complete

  1296. blindness

  1297. to seeing

  1298. people as

  1299. trees walking

  1300. to then

  1301. seeing

  1302. clearly.

  1303. And you

  1304. think to

  1305. yourself,

  1306. why that?

  1307. why didn't

  1308. Jesus just

  1309. heal him

  1310. instantly?

  1311. He's done

  1312. it before.

  1313. He could

  1314. do it here.

  1315. It's not

  1316. the fact

  1317. that he

  1318. couldn't

  1319. do it,

  1320. but he's

  1321. making a

  1322. point.

  1323. And the

  1324. point is

  1325. around this

  1326. question,

  1327. do you

  1328. not yet

  1329. understand?

  1330. He laid

  1331. his hands

  1332. on him

  1333. and asked

  1334. him,

  1335. do you

  1336. see anything

  1337. in verse

  1338. 23?

  1339. And he

  1340. looked up

  1341. and said,

  1342. I see

  1343. men,

  1344. but they

  1345. look like

  1346. trees

  1347. walking.

  1348. His vision

  1349. is still

  1350. blurred.

  1351. And it's

  1352. only at the

  1353. second time

  1354. of Jesus

  1355. touching his

  1356. eyes that

  1357. he's able

  1358. to see

  1359. clearly.

  1360. I'm sure

  1361. like myself,

  1362. many of you

  1363. have been

  1364. to the

  1365. opticians.

  1366. I remember

  1367. when I first

  1368. got glasses

  1369. when I was

  1370. young,

  1371. I couldn't

  1372. believe the

  1373. difference when

  1374. I put on the

  1375. glasses.

  1376. I mean,

  1377. I thought my

  1378. eyes were just

  1379. like everybody

  1380. else's,

  1381. but I was

  1382. half blind.

  1383. And putting

  1384. on my

  1385. glasses as I

  1386. went out

  1387. from the

  1388. optician was

  1389. just eye

  1390. opening,

  1391. literally,

  1392. because I

  1393. could see

  1394. so many

  1395. things I

  1396. had never

  1397. been able

  1398. to see

  1399. clearly

  1400. before.

  1401. And now

  1402. every time

  1403. you go

  1404. back to

  1405. the optician,

  1406. they always

  1407. start by

  1408. putting in

  1409. different lenses

  1410. and they're

  1411. asking which

  1412. one's clear,

  1413. number one

  1414. or number

  1415. two,

  1416. and they're

  1417. working their

  1418. way through

  1419. a process,

  1420. helping you

  1421. to have a

  1422. clear vision.

  1423. And in so

  1424. doing,

  1425. they're showing

  1426. that your

  1427. eyes are

  1428. not good,

  1429. the vision

  1430. is not good

  1431. until it's

  1432. aided.

  1433. And that's

  1434. what Jesus

  1435. is reminding

  1436. us of here

  1437. as well.

  1438. Understanding

  1439. takes time.

  1440. The man

  1441. wasn't healed

  1442. immediately.

  1443. He was

  1444. seeing just

  1445. bloody,

  1446. as it were,

  1447. at first,

  1448. and then

  1449. seeing clearly.

  1450. And for

  1451. ourselves,

  1452. as we are

  1453. called to

  1454. come to

  1455. an understanding

  1456. of God,

  1457. there are

  1458. things that

  1459. may seem

  1460. like riddles

  1461. at first,

  1462. things that

  1463. we don't

  1464. understand,

  1465. that aren't

  1466. clear to

  1467. us.

  1468. Which is

  1469. why we

  1470. need to

  1471. spend our

  1472. time studying

  1473. God's

  1474. word,

  1475. and in a

  1476. relationship

  1477. with God,

  1478. using our

  1479. time wisely,

  1480. praying to

  1481. God to

  1482. help us

  1483. to understand,

  1484. and to

  1485. share together

  1486. in that

  1487. search for

  1488. knowledge and

  1489. understanding,

  1490. in our

  1491. fellowship,

  1492. in our

  1493. Bible studies,

  1494. in all that

  1495. we're doing,

  1496. helping one

  1497. another along

  1498. the way.

  1499. Because

  1500. understanding

  1501. takes time,

  1502. and different

  1503. people are at

  1504. different stages

  1505. of understanding,

  1506. sharing knowledge

  1507. with one another

  1508. to help one

  1509. another along

  1510. the way.

  1511. So it

  1512. takes time.

  1513. The second

  1514. thing we see

  1515. here is that

  1516. understanding

  1517. takes faith.

  1518. Understanding

  1519. takes faith.

  1520. Theologian

  1521. Augustine

  1522. once said,

  1523. Understanding

  1524. is the

  1525. reward of

  1526. faith.

  1527. Therefore,

  1528. seek not

  1529. to understand

  1530. that you

  1531. may believe,

  1532. but believe

  1533. that you

  1534. may understand.

  1535. Again,

  1536. that sounds

  1537. maybe like

  1538. a little

  1539. riddle.

  1540. Therefore,

  1541. seek not

  1542. to understand

  1543. that you

  1544. may believe,

  1545. but believe

  1546. that you

  1547. may understand.

  1548. understand.

  1549. It's not a

  1550. case of

  1551. coming to

  1552. a point

  1553. where you

  1554. understand

  1555. everything,

  1556. therefore,

  1557. you can

  1558. believe.

  1559. But you

  1560. can believe

  1561. in God

  1562. without fully

  1563. understanding.

  1564. And the

  1565. more that

  1566. you believe

  1567. in God,

  1568. the more

  1569. you understand

  1570. the different

  1571. things.

  1572. Our

  1573. relationship

  1574. with the

  1575. Lord

  1576. is about

  1577. faith

  1578. and

  1579. trusting

  1580. him.

  1581. And those

  1582. who do

  1583. not believe

  1584. in God,

  1585. they lack

  1586. that.

  1587. There's no

  1588. faith.

  1589. And that's

  1590. why they

  1591. will mock

  1592. and belittle

  1593. Jesus,

  1594. because they

  1595. will base

  1596. their understanding

  1597. on what can

  1598. be seen

  1599. and what can

  1600. be proved.

  1601. And yet,

  1602. so much

  1603. of what the

  1604. Bible teaches

  1605. us are

  1606. things that

  1607. are as

  1608. yet unseen.

  1609. And that

  1610. can only

  1611. be seen

  1612. through

  1613. faith.

  1614. When you

  1615. look at the

  1616. man who

  1617. was blind,

  1618. he couldn't

  1619. see,

  1620. yet as

  1621. Jesus comes

  1622. to him,

  1623. in verse

  1624. 23,

  1625. he took

  1626. the blind

  1627. man by

  1628. the hand

  1629. and led

  1630. him out

  1631. of the

  1632. village.

  1633. You don't

  1634. read there

  1635. that he

  1636. took the

  1637. man by

  1638. the hand

  1639. and led

  1640. him away,

  1641. kicking and

  1642. screaming,

  1643. because he

  1644. didn't know

  1645. who he

  1646. was with,

  1647. didn't know

  1648. where he

  1649. was going

  1650. to be

  1651. taken,

  1652. didn't

  1653. know

  1654. what he

  1655. was going

  1656. to do

  1657. with

  1658. him.

  1659. There is

  1660. an element

  1661. of faith

  1662. in this

  1663. blind

  1664. man.

  1665. Jesus

  1666. has taken

  1667. him by

  1668. the hand

  1669. and he's

  1670. not

  1671. resisting.

  1672. He's

  1673. allowing

  1674. him to

  1675. lead him

  1676. along

  1677. the way.

  1678. And again,

  1679. there's an

  1680. element of

  1681. that for

  1682. ourselves

  1683. too,

  1684. where when

  1685. Jesus is

  1686. calling us,

  1687. we are to

  1688. put our

  1689. hand in

  1690. his and

  1691. allow him

  1692. to lead

  1693. us along

  1694. the way,

  1695. trusting

  1696. him that

  1697. he will

  1698. show us

  1699. the way

  1700. and help

  1701. us to

  1702. understand.

  1703. And that

  1704. is what

  1705. faith is

  1706. about.

  1707. Trusting

  1708. the Lord

  1709. in all

  1710. the ways

  1711. ahead for

  1712. us.

  1713. The

  1714. disciples

  1715. too have

  1716. been blind

  1717. themselves.

  1718. They've been

  1719. blind at

  1720. different points

  1721. in their

  1722. lives.

  1723. They haven't

  1724. understood

  1725. everything and

  1726. it has

  1727. taken faith

  1728. to go on.

  1729. You think

  1730. of the

  1731. disciples when

  1732. they were

  1733. first called,

  1734. when they

  1735. were called

  1736. to leave

  1737. everything

  1738. behind,

  1739. the fishermen

  1740. were told

  1741. to leave

  1742. your nets

  1743. and come

  1744. and follow

  1745. me,

  1746. Jesus said.

  1747. What did

  1748. they do?

  1749. They didn't

  1750. say,

  1751. well,

  1752. I've got so

  1753. many questions

  1754. to ask

  1755. before I

  1756. go.

  1757. They left

  1758. and they

  1759. went

  1760. immediately.

  1761. They were

  1762. faithful to

  1763. the call

  1764. of God

  1765. and trusted

  1766. him that

  1767. he would be

  1768. with them

  1769. on the

  1770. way.

  1771. There were

  1772. various

  1773. challenges

  1774. along the

  1775. way.

  1776. In

  1777. John's

  1778. Gospel,

  1779. chapter 6,

  1780. towards the

  1781. end of that

  1782. chapter,

  1783. you read

  1784. of a time

  1785. when Jesus

  1786. had a large

  1787. crowd gathered

  1788. around him

  1789. and were

  1790. hearing his

  1791. teaching.

  1792. It says

  1793. that many

  1794. found it

  1795. difficult to

  1796. understand

  1797. and they

  1798. turned away.

  1799. They had

  1800. no faith

  1801. to go

  1802. forward.

  1803. Jesus

  1804. asked the

  1805. disciples a

  1806. question there.

  1807. Will you

  1808. also go

  1809. away?

  1810. And the

  1811. response was

  1812. to whom

  1813. else can

  1814. we go?

  1815. For you

  1816. have the

  1817. words of

  1818. eternal

  1819. life.

  1820. There's

  1821. faith there.

  1822. And that's

  1823. what we see

  1824. here as

  1825. well when

  1826. they're asked

  1827. these probing

  1828. questions.

  1829. Who do

  1830. others say

  1831. that I am?

  1832. They start

  1833. to say,

  1834. well, some

  1835. say that

  1836. you're John

  1837. the Baptist.

  1838. Others say

  1839. you're Elijah

  1840. and others

  1841. the prophets.

  1842. there needs

  1843. to be

  1844. faith to

  1845. give the

  1846. answer that

  1847. they give.

  1848. And when

  1849. you think

  1850. about it,

  1851. they're

  1852. standing out

  1853. from the

  1854. crowd.

  1855. And both

  1856. these

  1857. occasions in

  1858. the Gospel

  1859. of John

  1860. and here

  1861. in the

  1862. Gospel of

  1863. Mark,

  1864. the disciples

  1865. are in a

  1866. small number

  1867. by themselves.

  1868. And the

  1869. easy way

  1870. out would be

  1871. just to

  1872. turn away.

  1873. We don't

  1874. understand these

  1875. things.

  1876. They make

  1877. no sense

  1878. to us.

  1879. We'll just

  1880. go away

  1881. like everybody

  1882. else.

  1883. But faith,

  1884. even though

  1885. they don't

  1886. fully understand

  1887. at this

  1888. point,

  1889. faith keeps

  1890. them looking

  1891. to Jesus.

  1892. Faith is

  1893. what leads

  1894. them,

  1895. Peter,

  1896. to reply,

  1897. you are

  1898. the Christ.

  1899. You are

  1900. the Christ.

  1901. You are

  1902. the Messiah.

  1903. You are

  1904. the one

  1905. we have

  1906. been hearing

  1907. is to

  1908. come.

  1909. You are

  1910. the one

  1911. we are

  1912. supposed to

  1913. be looking

  1914. for.

  1915. You are

  1916. the Christ.

  1917. And when

  1918. you think

  1919. of that

  1920. question for

  1921. yourself

  1922. today,

  1923. who do

  1924. you say

  1925. that he

  1926. is?

  1927. Do you

  1928. have faith

  1929. to answer,

  1930. you are

  1931. the Christ?

  1932. Do you

  1933. have faith

  1934. to answer,

  1935. to whom

  1936. else can

  1937. I go?

  1938. Because you

  1939. alone have

  1940. the words

  1941. of eternal

  1942. life.

  1943. There is

  1944. nowhere else

  1945. we can

  1946. go,

  1947. but we

  1948. need

  1949. faith.

  1950. The

  1951. missionary

  1952. Adoniram

  1953. Judson,

  1954. he was

  1955. in Burma

  1956. in the

  1957. early 1800s,

  1958. what is

  1959. now Myanmar,

  1960. and he

  1961. went there

  1962. to preach

  1963. the gospel

  1964. to those

  1965. who were

  1966. blind and

  1967. ignorant to

  1968. God in

  1969. that place.

  1970. men

  1971. and he

  1972. did not

  1973. go well

  1974. at first.

  1975. And he

  1976. ended up

  1977. in prison,

  1978. chained up

  1979. in prison.

  1980. And he

  1981. was in

  1982. prison with

  1983. a number

  1984. of other

  1985. fellow

  1986. prisoners.

  1987. And he

  1988. was sharing

  1989. about the

  1990. Lord and

  1991. what he

  1992. had come

  1993. to this

  1994. place to

  1995. do with

  1996. those who

  1997. were in

  1998. prison with

  1999. him.

  2000. But he

  2001. was mocked

  2002. by some.

  2003. And one

  2004. day,

  2005. one other

  2006. prisoner asked

  2007. him,

  2008. looking at

  2009. him sitting

  2010. there in

  2011. a prison

  2012. cell with

  2013. this large

  2014. weight of

  2015. chain around

  2016. his legs so

  2017. that he

  2018. couldn't move,

  2019. he asked

  2020. him,

  2021. Dr.

  2022. Judson,

  2023. what do

  2024. you think

  2025. now of

  2026. the prospects

  2027. of preaching

  2028. to the

  2029. heathen

  2030. here?

  2031. Well,

  2032. what was

  2033. the response

  2034. of Dr.

  2035. Judson?

  2036. His

  2037. instant reply

  2038. was the

  2039. prospects

  2040. are just

  2041. as bright

  2042. as the

  2043. promises of

  2044. God.

  2045. He had

  2046. faith that

  2047. God would

  2048. help him

  2049. to proclaim

  2050. the gospel.

  2051. And that's

  2052. exactly what

  2053. he was doing

  2054. even in

  2055. that prison

  2056. at that

  2057. very moment.

  2058. He was

  2059. preaching to

  2060. the heathen

  2061. about the

  2062. promises of

  2063. God.

  2064. He had

  2065. faith.

  2066. faith.

  2067. Do you

  2068. have faith?

  2069. Do I

  2070. have faith

  2071. in all

  2072. that God

  2073. is calling

  2074. us to

  2075. do?

  2076. In all

  2077. that God

  2078. wants us

  2079. to do

  2080. as a

  2081. people

  2082. for him?

  2083. Do we

  2084. have faith?

  2085. Do we

  2086. believe in

  2087. that response

  2088. of Peter?

  2089. You are

  2090. the Christ.

  2091. You are

  2092. the one

  2093. who is able

  2094. to provide

  2095. and help

  2096. us in

  2097. all our

  2098. needs.

  2099. Thirdly

  2100. and finally

  2101. we see

  2102. here

  2103. understanding

  2104. takes

  2105. grace.

  2106. Whether

  2107. we are

  2108. looking at

  2109. the blind

  2110. man here

  2111. or the

  2112. Pharisees

  2113. or the

  2114. disciples

  2115. we see

  2116. God's

  2117. grace in

  2118. so many

  2119. ways to

  2120. them all.

  2121. What he

  2122. could do

  2123. that he

  2124. doesn't.

  2125. What we

  2126. probably

  2127. wouldn't do

  2128. ourselves

  2129. that he

  2130. does.

  2131. he shows

  2132. so much

  2133. grace

  2134. towards

  2135. them.

  2136. When you

  2137. look at

  2138. the blind

  2139. man

  2140. when he's

  2141. taken by

  2142. the hand

  2143. when he's

  2144. touched

  2145. on his

  2146. eyes

  2147. both times

  2148. when he's

  2149. spoken to

  2150. by Jesus

  2151. it's showing

  2152. the love

  2153. and grace

  2154. of the

  2155. Lord to

  2156. someone who

  2157. would by

  2158. others

  2159. just

  2160. cast

  2161. away

  2162. put away

  2163. as a

  2164. burden

  2165. on society.

  2166. he shows

  2167. grace.

  2168. How many

  2169. times does

  2170. he show

  2171. grace to

  2172. the

  2173. disciples?

  2174. You maybe

  2175. think to

  2176. yourself

  2177. all those

  2178. disciples

  2179. who are

  2180. so close

  2181. to Jesus

  2182. what a

  2183. privilege

  2184. they had

  2185. what an

  2186. understanding

  2187. they had

  2188. and yet

  2189. so often

  2190. you find

  2191. Jesus

  2192. asking them

  2193. do you

  2194. not yet

  2195. understand?

  2196. Do you

  2197. not realize

  2198. who I

  2199. am?

  2200. And you

  2201. think of

  2202. Peter

  2203. himself

  2204. who was

  2205. so often

  2206. the

  2207. spoke

  2208. person

  2209. for the

  2210. disciples

  2211. whether it

  2212. was

  2213. will you

  2214. also

  2215. go away

  2216. and he

  2217. replies

  2218. to whom

  2219. else

  2220. shall we

  2221. go?

  2222. You

  2223. have the

  2224. words

  2225. of

  2226. eternal

  2227. life

  2228. or

  2229. here

  2230. as

  2231. Peter

  2232. answers

  2233. in

  2234. chapter

  2235. 8

  2236. the

  2237. question

  2238. who

  2239. do

  2240. you

  2241. say

  2242. that

  2243. I

  2244. am?

  2245. He

  2246. says

  2247. you

  2248. are

  2249. the

  2250. Christ

  2251. you

  2252. think

  2253. to

  2254. yourself

  2255. oh

  2256. to be

  2257. as

  2258. holy

  2259. as

  2260. Peter

  2261. to have

  2262. the

  2263. faith

  2264. of

  2265. Peter

  2266. such

  2267. deep

  2268. answers

  2269. that he

  2270. has

  2271. where

  2272. else

  2273. can

  2274. we

  2275. go

  2276. because

  2277. you

  2278. are

  2279. the

  2280. words

  2281. of

  2282. eternal

  2283. life

  2284. or

  2285. you

  2286. are

  2287. the

  2288. Christ

  2289. the

  2290. Messiah

  2291. there's

  2292. a

  2293. depth

  2294. to

  2295. these

  2296. answers

  2297. that

  2298. we

  2299. maybe

  2300. don't

  2301. have

  2302. and

  2303. we

  2304. think

  2305. oh

  2306. well

  2307. we'll

  2308. never

  2309. be

  2310. like

  2311. Peter

  2312. with

  2313. that

  2314. understanding

  2315. and

  2316. yet

  2317. how

  2318. much

  2319. grace

  2320. did

  2321. the

  2322. Lord

  2323. have

  2324. to

  2325. show

  2326. to

  2327. Peter

  2328. you

  2329. think

  2330. he

  2331. had

  2332. all

  2333. that

  2334. understanding

  2335. and

  2336. yet

  2337. when

  2338. it

  2339. came

  2340. to

  2341. the

  2342. crucifixion

  2343. or

  2344. just

  2345. before

  2346. the

  2347. crucifixion

  2348. what

  2349. did

  2350. he

  2351. do

  2352. when

  2353. he

  2354. was

  2355. asked

  2356. three

  2357. times

  2358. do

  2359. you

  2360. not

  2361. know

  2362. this

  2363. man

  2364. are

  2365. you

  2366. not

  2367. with

  2368. this

  2369. man

  2370. he

  2371. denied

  2372. him

  2373. three

  2374. times

  2375. three

  2376. times

  2377. when

  2378. he

  2379. was

  2380. asked

  2381. are

  2382. you

  2383. with

  2384. him

  2385. or

  2386. do

  2387. he

  2388. had

  2389. all

  2390. these

  2391. deep

  2392. answers

  2393. and

  2394. yet

  2395. he

  2396. didn't

  2397. fully

  2398. understand

  2399. who

  2400. he

  2401. was

  2402. and

  2403. he

  2404. denied

  2405. him

  2406. three

  2407. times

  2408. but

  2409. what

  2410. did

  2411. Jesus

  2412. do

  2413. he

  2414. restored

  2415. him

  2416. he

  2417. showed

  2418. grace

  2419. to

  2420. him

  2421. and

  2422. how

  2423. many

  2424. times

  2425. have

  2426. you

  2427. been

  2428. shown

  2429. grace

  2430. in

  2431. your

  2432. own

  2433. life

  2434. how

  2435. many

  2436. times

  2437. has

  2438. the

  2439. Lord

  2440. been

  2441. gracious

  2442. to

  2443. you

  2444. when

  2445. there

  2446. are

  2447. times

  2448. when

  2449. you

  2450. feel

  2451. so

  2452. close

  2453. to

  2454. the

  2455. Lord

  2456. so

  2457. you

  2458. get

  2459. all

  2460. the

  2461. understanding

  2462. and

  2463. the

  2464. next

  2465. minute

  2466. you're

  2467. falling

  2468. into

  2469. a

  2470. sin

  2471. again

  2472. and

  2473. the

  2474. Lord

  2475. is

  2476. gracious

  2477. because

  2478. we

  2479. don't

  2480. fully

  2481. understand

  2482. and

  2483. we

  2484. fall

  2485. and

  2486. stumble

  2487. along

  2488. the

  2489. way

  2490. and

  2491. yet

  2492. the

  2493. Lord

  2494. is

  2495. gracious

  2496. to

  2497. us

  2498. and

  2499. the

  2500. Lord

  2501. is

  2502. still

  2503. asking

  2504. us

  2505. these

  2506. searching

  2507. questions

  2508. that

  2509. we

  2510. might

  2511. come

  2512. and

  2513. understand

  2514. more

  2515. and

  2516. more

  2517. of

  2518. who

  2519. he

  2520. is

  2521. and

  2522. what

  2523. he

  2524. is

  2525. able

  2526. to

  2527. do

  2528. for

  2529. us

  2530. grace

  2531. as

  2532. the hymn

  2533. says

  2534. has brought

  2535. us

  2536. to a

  2537. certain

  2538. point

  2539. and

  2540. grace

  2541. will

  2542. see

  2543. us

  2544. home

  2545. because

  2546. grace

  2547. is

  2548. what

  2549. is

  2550. able

  2551. to

  2552. keep

  2553. us

  2554. we

  2555. don't

  2556. fully

  2557. understand

  2558. we

  2559. don't

  2560. fully

  2561. see

  2562. and

  2563. have

  2564. all

  2565. the

  2566. answers

  2567. but

  2568. by

  2569. faith

  2570. and

  2571. by

  2572. grace

  2573. we

  2574. go

  2575. on

  2576. Richard

  2577. Baxter

  2578. another

  2579. theologian

  2580. who wrote

  2581. many

  2582. books

  2583. he

  2584. tells

  2585. a

  2586. story

  2587. in

  2588. one

  2589. of

  2590. his

  2591. books

  2592. about

  2593. the

  2594. building

  2595. of

  2596. the

  2597. Golden

  2598. Gate

  2599. Bridge

  2600. in

  2601. San

  2602. Francisco

  2603. and

  2604. he

  2605. recounts

  2606. how

  2607. during

  2608. the

  2609. construction

  2610. of

  2611. that

  2612. bridge

  2613. the

  2614. construction

  2615. works

  2616. had

  2617. fallen

  2618. way

  2619. behind

  2620. schedule

  2621. and

  2622. the

  2623. problem

  2624. was

  2625. that

  2626. the

  2627. workers

  2628. were

  2629. so

  2630. afraid

  2631. because

  2632. a

  2633. number

  2634. of

  2635. workers

  2636. had

  2637. fallen

  2638. fallen

  2639. from a

  2640. great

  2641. height

  2642. and

  2643. fallen

  2644. to

  2645. their

  2646. death

  2647. and

  2648. so

  2649. it

  2650. was

  2651. leaving

  2652. people

  2653. afraid

  2654. the

  2655. work

  2656. was

  2657. slow

  2658. and

  2659. sometimes

  2660. at a

  2661. stop

  2662. and

  2663. people

  2664. were

  2665. trying

  2666. to

  2667. work

  2668. out

  2669. engineers

  2670. administrators

  2671. they were

  2672. all trying

  2673. to find

  2674. an answer

  2675. to this

  2676. until

  2677. the

  2678. solution

  2679. that they

  2680. came up

  2681. with

  2682. was to

  2683. hang

  2684. a net

  2685. under

  2686. the span

  2687. of the

  2688. whole

  2689. bridge

  2690. a net

  2691. that if

  2692. anyone

  2693. would fall

  2694. off

  2695. the net

  2696. would

  2697. catch

  2698. them

  2699. it

  2700. cost

  2701. a lot

  2702. and

  2703. they were

  2704. thinking

  2705. can we

  2706. afford

  2707. to do

  2708. this

  2709. but

  2710. they

  2711. went

  2712. ahead

  2713. and

  2714. they

  2715. did

  2716. it

  2717. and

  2718. what

  2719. they

  2720. found

  2721. was

  2722. that

  2723. the

  2724. work

  2725. progressed

  2726. so much

  2727. quicker

  2728. and ended

  2729. up ahead

  2730. of schedule

  2731. because

  2732. there was

  2733. the security

  2734. of knowing

  2735. that

  2736. underneath

  2737. was a

  2738. net

  2739. that would

  2740. catch

  2741. them

  2742. and

  2743. that's

  2744. a

  2745. reminder

  2746. to

  2747. ourselves

  2748. as well

  2749. of the

  2750. great price

  2751. that the

  2752. Lord

  2753. has

  2754. paid

  2755. for

  2756. us

  2757. we

  2758. don't

  2759. fully

  2760. understand

  2761. we

  2762. maybe

  2763. don't

  2764. have

  2765. all

  2766. the

  2767. answers

  2768. but

  2769. when

  2770. we're

  2771. asked

  2772. the

  2773. question

  2774. who

  2775. do

  2776. you

  2777. say

  2778. that

  2779. I

  2780. am

  2781. the

  2782. question

  2783. that

  2784. Jesus

  2785. asked

  2786. of

  2787. the

  2788. disciples

  2789. the

  2790. question

  2791. that

  2792. Jesus

  2793. asks

  2794. of

  2795. ourselves

  2796. today

  2797. who

  2798. do

  2799. you

  2800. say

  2801. that

  2802. I

  2803. am

  2804. how

  2805. do

  2806. you

  2807. respond

  2808. how

  2809. do

  2810. we

  2811. find

  2812. peace

  2813. with

  2814. God

  2815. faith

  2816. comes

  2817. by

  2818. hearing

  2819. and

  2820. hearing

  2821. through

  2822. the

  2823. word

  2824. of

  2825. God

  2826. and

  2827. the

  2828. more

  2829. that

  2830. we're

  2831. hearing

  2832. from

  2833. the

  2834. word

  2835. of

  2836. God

  2837. we

  2838. pray

  2839. that

  2840. the

  2841. more

  2842. the

  2843. Lord

  2844. will

  2845. be

  2846. opening

  2847. our

  2848. eyes

  2849. just

  2850. like

  2851. the

  2852. blind

  2853. man

  2854. in

  2855. stages

  2856. we

  2857. may

  2858. only

  2859. be

  2860. seeing

  2861. trees

  2862. men

  2863. like

  2864. trees

  2865. walking

  2866. as he

  2867. describes

  2868. seeing

  2869. blurry

  2870. but

  2871. oh

  2872. to have

  2873. our

  2874. eyes

  2875. opened

  2876. even

  2877. to

  2878. that

  2879. stage

  2880. is

  2881. progress

  2882. because

  2883. the

  2884. Lord

  2885. is

  2886. working

  2887. and

  2888. it's

  2889. not

  2890. to be

  2891. afraid

  2892. to

  2893. go

  2894. on

  2895. but

  2896. to

  2897. have

  2898. faith

  2899. to

  2900. go

  2901. forward

  2902. and

  2903. to

  2904. rejoice

  2905. that

  2906. over

  2907. time

  2908. he

  2909. is

  2910. able

  2911. to

  2912. help

  2913. us

  2914. to

  2915. see

  2916. and

  2917. to

  2918. see

  2919. clearly

  2920. that

  2921. we

  2922. would

  2923. rejoice

  2924. in

  2925. the

  2926. hope

  2927. of

  2928. the

  2929. glory

  2930. of

  2931. God

  2932. John

  2933. Calvin

  2934. he

  2935. said

  2936. faith

  2937. is

  2938. not

  2939. a

  2940. distant

  2941. view

  2942. but

  2943. a

  2944. warm

  2945. embrace

  2946. of

  2947. Christ

  2948. and

  2949. that's

  2950. what

  2951. we

  2952. want

  2953. not

  2954. just

  2955. a

  2956. vision

  2957. of

  2958. the

  2959. Lord

  2960. that

  2961. is

  2962. a

  2963. distant

  2964. view

  2965. when

  2966. we

  2967. feel

  2968. far

  2969. away

  2970. but

  2971. by

  2972. faith

  2973. receiving

  2974. a

  2975. warm

  2976. embrace

  2977. of

  2978. the

  2979. Lord

  2980. Jesus

  2981. Christ

  2982. as

  2983. he

  2984. takes

  2985. us

  2986. by

  2987. the

  2988. hand

  2989. as

  2990. he

  2991. opens

  2992. our

  2993. eyes

  2994. to

  2995. follow

  2996. him

  2997. along

  2998. the

  2999. way

  3000. may

  3001. the

  3002. Lord

  3003. give

  3004. us

  3005. faith

  3006. and

  3007. open

  3008. our

  3009. eyes

  3010. to

  3011. see

  3012. him

  3013. clearly

  3014. let

  3015. us

  3016. pray

  3017. our

  3018. father

  3019. in

  3020. heaven

  3021. we

  3022. thank

  3023. you

  3024. for

  3025. your

  3026. word

  3027. and

  3028. we

  3029. pray

  3030. you

  3031. will

  3032. bless

  3033. it

  3034. to

  3035. us

  3036. that

  3037. we

  3038. will

  3039. have

  3040. understanding

  3041. Lord

  3042. more

  3043. and

  3044. more

  3045. that

  3046. we

  3047. will

  3048. have

  3049. our

  3050. eyes

  3051. opened

  3052. more

  3053. and

  3054. more

  3055. to

  3056. our

  3057. precious

  3058. saviour

  3059. and

  3060. to

  3061. fix

  3062. our

  3063. eyes

  3064. on

  3065. him

  3066. we

  3067. pray

  3068. Lord

  3069. that

  3070. you

  3071. will

  3072. help

  3073. us

  3074. in

  3075. our

  3076. understanding

  3077. help

  3078. us

  3079. even

  3080. in

  3081. our

  3082. lack

  3083. of

  3084. understanding

  3085. that

  3086. we

  3087. can

  3088. come

  3089. to

  3090. you

  3091. with

  3092. all

  3093. of

  3094. these

  3095. things

  3096. hear

  3097. our

  3098. prayers

  3099. Lord

  3100. and

  3101. continue

  3102. with

  3103. us

  3104. pardoning

  3105. sin

  3106. in

  3107. Jesus

  3108. name

  3109. Amen

  3110. we're

  3111. going to

  3112. conclude

  3113. by

  3114. singing

  3115. in

  3116. Psalm

  3117. 57

  3118. in

  3119. the

  3120. Sing

  3125. Psalm

  3126. 57

  3127. page

  3128. 75

  3129. we'll

  3130. sing

  3131. from

  3132. verse

  3133. 9

  3134. down

  3135. to

  3136. the

  3137. end

  3138. of

  3139. the

  3140. psalm

  3141. the

  3142. tune

  3143. is

  3144. Dennis

  3145. among

  3146. the

  3147. nations

  3148. Lord

  3149. to

  3150. you

  3151. I

  3152. will

  3153. give

  3154. praise

  3155. among

  3156. the

  3157. peoples

  3158. of

  3159. the

  3160. earth

  3161. my

  3162. songs

  3163. of

  3164. you

  3165. I'll

  3166. raise

  3167. we'll

  3168. sing

  3169. these

  3170. three

  3171. stanzas

  3172. to

  3173. God's

  3174. praise

  3175. among

  3203. which

  3204. reaches

  3210. faithfulness

  3211. O

  3221. heavens

  3222. O

  3223. God

  3224. exalted

  3231. below

  3232. display

  3233. your

  3238. I'll
