  1. Well, thank you. Thank you for your warm welcome. It's lovely to be in fellowship with our brothers

  2. and sisters in Jesus Christ here in this congregation and to renew that fellowship. I

  3. thank the Lord for so many blessings received through my life, not least as a child growing up

  4. in this congregation and through in Laxdale in the Sunday school there. We lift up our hearts

  5. to the Lord in worship to praise his glorious name and we worship God with the words of Psalm 149

  6. from the Scottish Psalter. Let's sing together Psalm 149 from the Scottish Psalter at the beginning

  7. and the verses 1 to 4. The tune is Montrose as we sing, praise ye the Lord, unto him sing a new song

  8. and his praise in sweet songs do ye raise. Let's rise and sing praise to our great God.

  9. is he the Lord, unto him sing a new song and his praise in thee, that sent me all his praise.

  10. in sweet songs do ye raise. Let Israel in peace make your joy, and to him praises sing. Let all that thy

  11. the words of a body to sing the gospel is known for your greatest song forounding

  12. and theesiom

  13. be do ye raise. Let them and do his great hymp 57

  14. With them with timbrel and with harb, His songs His praise advance.

  15. For God doth pleasure take in those that His own people meet,

  16. and He with His salvation the meek will beauty.

  17. We draw near to our God in prayer. Let us pray.

  18. It is sweet indeed, gracious Lord, to come to make melody in heart and in mind before the Lord.

  19. We ask that we would be reminded constantly of the grace and the goodness that we have received from our faithful God, our Maker.

  20. We ask that our worship will be characterized by the privilege of Christian joy.

  21. Let Israel in His Maker joy, and to Him praises sing.

  22. As we look around this world of war and of confusion and of tragedy,

  23. as we see around us wickedness seeming to be out of control in so many places,

  24. Lord, where is there to be found any source of comfort, any source of joy,

  25. apart from eternal truth and eternal holiness, eternal beauty,

  26. that which comes from beholding the face of God.

  27. may we be still in the Lord's presence in this hour of worship tonight,

  28. and may our hearts be prepared and made ready

  29. for a Lord's day of blessings and of rest and of good things.

  30. As we turn in these days around communion to the Gospel of John to read together,

  31. and as we hear again the familiar story of our Saviour's obedience and humility and love,

  32. give us ears to hear.

  33. Give us understanding.

  34. Increase our love for your holy child, Jesus.

  35. Help us in our minds and our imaginations to see Him

  36. and to adore Him,

  37. to love Him,

  38. and to rejoice with thanksgiving in all your works.

  39. We come with the church through ages past

  40. to worship God,

  41. and we join our prayers and our praises

  42. with the church that is in heaven around the throne.

  43. Paul could pray,

  44. leading the church in its prayer,

  45. bowing the knee to the Father,

  46. in whom the whole family,

  47. in heaven

  48. and on earth,

  49. finds its name,

  50. its identity,

  51. and its source.

  52. We pray to our Father,

  53. but we do not yet see His glory fully.

  54. But the church in glory

  55. is bathed in light.

  56. Our praises

  57. and their praises

  58. coming together

  59. in Jesus

  60. to the glory of the Father.

  61. How wonderful.

  62. Lord, bless the work of this congregation,

  63. in this community,

  64. and in its influence throughout the island

  65. and further afield.

  66. We thank you, Lord,

  67. for missionary partnerships

  68. that have been rich and rewarding

  69. through decades.

  70. and we ask that tonight,

  71. as a church,

  72. in our commitment to Jesus,

  73. we would be concerned

  74. for the care of the church

  75. and of the saints,

  76. but also for the welfare

  77. of those who are not yet part of the church,

  78. and for children

  79. and young people

  80. who have yet to

  81. show covenant obedience

  82. by an adult

  83. and a maturing faith.

  84. How we long

  85. for the church of today

  86. to be used of God

  87. as a means

  88. to sow the seed

  89. for the church of tomorrow

  90. and the latter days.

  91. Take pleasure

  92. in your people,

  93. gracious Lord.

  94. Take pleasure

  95. in your own people

  96. and with your salvation

  97. make beautiful your people.

  98. make mature

  99. and fruitful

  100. your people

  101. so that your people's praises

  102. will not be merely in form,

  103. but with the whole heart,

  104. with the whole mind,

  105. leaning towards the Lord

  106. and declaring his praises.

  107. May we declare

  108. our Savior Jesus

  109. when we lift the cup of salvation

  110. when we break

  111. and share with one another

  112. the bread that speaks

  113. of his body

  114. tomorrow.

  115. May we proclaim

  116. the Lord's death

  117. until he comes.

  118. And may the meek

  119. be beautified

  120. by the Spirit's work.

  121. And may we eat

  122. and drink

  123. with each other

  124. and with our Lord

  125. as friends

  126. and as the people

  127. who know peace with God.

  128. We pray that you would remember

  129. this nation.

  130. Even the king

  131. is frail

  132. and made of dust.

  133. Send healing

  134. and blessing

  135. upon him

  136. and his family.

  137. and remember

  138. those who govern

  139. in Edinburgh

  140. and in the

  141. assemblies

  142. and parliaments

  143. of the United Kingdom

  144. in the various

  145. nations

  146. and in the UK.

  147. But most of all

  148. we pray

  149. for that kingdom

  150. that is coming

  151. and for that kingdom

  152. that is growing

  153. and for that kingdom

  154. that will never,

  155. never end.

  156. the kingdom

  157. of our Lord

  158. and Saviour

  159. Jesus Christ.

  160. May the light

  161. of his face

  162. be turned

  163. towards

  164. his praying people

  165. today

  166. in this land

  167. and in every land.

  168. Keep us

  169. and use us

  170. and bless us

  171. and grant to us

  172. that for which

  173. Jesus prayed

  174. in the upper room.

  175. Keep us united

  176. and keep us

  177. loving

  178. our Lord

  179. and one another

  180. and keep us

  181. as lovers

  182. of your truth.

  183. Remember those

  184. who are suffering

  185. and sick

  186. who are known

  187. to us

  188. and who are

  189. in our prayers.

  190. Remember those

  191. who join us

  192. over the internet

  193. and make

  194. your servants

  195. hear

  196. ministering the word

  197. in this town

  198. and from this pulpit

  199. fruitful

  200. joyful

  201. faithful

  202. and thankful

  203. that they have

  204. seen the Lord

  205. working mighty

  206. things

  207. to his glory.

  208. Remember

  209. your servants

  210. here

  211. and all

  212. whom they love

  213. and remember

  214. us all

  215. pardoning sin

  216. for Jesus'

  217. sake.

  218. Amen.

  219. I'm going to sing

  220. a further psalm

  221. from the Scottish Psalter

  222. Psalm 73

  223. Psalm 73

  224. at verse 23

  225. in the psalm

  226. the tune is

  227. Weatherby

  228. if you're using

  229. the books

  230. Psalm 73

  231. at verse 23

  232. is on page

  233. 316

  234. the psalmist

  235. here is

  236. disturbed

  237. but the wicked

  238. are

  239. apparently

  240. getting on

  241. with life

  242. without God

  243. they do

  244. their own

  245. thing

  246. it doesn't

  247. seem to matter

  248. and often

  249. God's people

  250. and even

  251. God's king

  252. can be

  253. in the gutter

  254. and bewildered

  255. by providence

  256. but to draw

  257. near to God

  258. and to worship

  259. God

  260. is to make

  261. all things

  262. clear

  263. so we sing

  264. from verse 23

  265. to 26

  266. to Weatherby

  267. nevertheless

  268. continually

  269. O Lord

  270. I am

  271. with thee

  272. let us stand

  273. and sing

  274. thou dost

  275. behold

  276. by thy

  277. right

  278. heart

  279. and still

  280. thou hold

  281. us

  282. near

  283. now

  284. with

  285. thy

  286. hands

  287. still

  288. while

  289. I live

  290. wilt

  291. be

  292. conduct

  293. and

  294. guide

  295. and

  296. took

  297. thy

  298. glory

  299. afterward

  300. receive

  301. me

  302. to

  303. abide

  304. O

  305. Mah

  306. Abayin

  307. the

  308. heavens

  309. high

  310. that

  311. live

  312. O

  313. Lord

  314. alone

  315. and

  316. in

  317. the

  318. air

  319. will

  320. my

  321. desire

  322. besides

  323. me

  324. there

  325. is

  326. come

  327. my

  328. flesh

  329. and

  330. heart

  331. my

  332. flesh

  333. and

  334. heart

  335. thou

  336. faint

  337. and

  338. fail

  339. but

  340. God

  341. doth

  342. fail

  343. forever

  344. for

  345. of

  346. my

  347. heart

  348. God

  349. is

  350. less

  351. than

  352. and

  353. portion

  354. forever

  355. forever

  356. we're turning to the

  357. scriptures to the New Testament and to the gospel of John to chapter 19

  358. in john 19 last evening if you were with us we read the opening verses of john 19 and we take

  359. up the reading in the middle of verse 16 this evening to give you the setting the lord jesus

  360. was with his disciples in the upper room on the thursday evening of the last week of his life

  361. he broke bread with them he washed their feet judas left to betray him and wonderful teaching

  362. was given in that upper room and he prayed for them as perhaps no man has ever prayed

  363. in the history of the world and then they went out into the night and chapter 18 records his arrest

  364. in the garden of gethsemane and the beginnings of his trial and now in chapter 19 the cross

  365. draws near john 19 verse 16 so they took jesus

    John 19:16

  366. and he went out bearing his own cross to the place called the place of a skull which in aramaic is called

  367. golgotha there they crucified him and within two others one on either side and jesus between them

  368. pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross it read jesus of nazareth the king of the jews

  369. many of the jews read this inscription for the place where jesus for the place where jesus was crucified was

  370. near the city and it was written in aramaic in latin and in greek so the chief priests of the jews said to pilate

  371. do not write the king of the jews but rather this man said i am king of the jews

  372. pilate pilate answered what i have written i have written when the soldiers had crucified jesus

  373. they took his garments and divided them into four parts one part for each soldier also his tunic

  374. but the tunic was seamless woven in one piece from top to bottom so they said to one another let us not

  375. tear it but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be this was to fulfill the scripture which says they divided

  376. my garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots so the soldiers did these things

  377. but standing by the cross of jesus where his mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clopas

  378. and mary magdalene when jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby he said to his mother

  379. woman behold your son then he said to the disciple behold your mother and from that hour

  380. the disciple took her to his own house to his own home this is the holy and inspired word of god

  381. may he bless to us the word and may it come alive for us before we study these verses together

  382. we're going to sing again a psalm of the cross psalm 22 from sing psalms in sing psalms psalm 22 at verse 16

  383. page 26 in the blue book psalm 22 at verse 16 the psalmist is persecuted and suffering

  384. a pack of dogs encloses me their circle round me is complete i am beset by evil men and they have pierced

  385. my hands and feet prophesying beyond whatever the psalmist experienced the horrors of the cross

  386. the tunis maro will stand and sing verses 16 onwards

  387. a pack of dogs encloses me their circle round me is complete

  388. i am beset by evil men and they have pierced my hands and feet i count the number of my

  389. my hands and feet i am beset by evil men and they have pierced my hands and feet i am beset by

  390. the people they have pierced my hands and feet i am beset by the people they have pierced

  391. they throw the dice to get my coat among themselves my clothes they share

  392. and probably cover the dividing line of jade caman it will happenir

  393. O Lord, save me from power of evil dogs, my precious life from cruel storm.

  394. From menace of the lion's mouth, and from their fury setting me,

  395. from peril of wild oxen's arms, he heard my guide and rescued me.

  396. Brothers and sisters in Jesus, the story of the cross is a holy story,

  397. and these chapters around the cross are holy ground.

  398. Perhaps we could briefly pray.

  399. May we receive, gracious Lord, the truth of your word in a fresh way,

  400. in a way that brings certainty and conviction and Christian joy to each one of us.

  401. May we see Jesus, show us Jesus in his beauty and in his service and humility.

  402. To the glory of God the Father. Amen.

  403. The word behold is a really beautiful word in the English language.

  404. It's a word that invites us to stop, to look, to consider.

  405. I know it sounds a little bit old-fashioned.

  406. Behold.

  407. But sometimes Bible translations are conservative in their use of language,

  408. even their use of the English language.

  409. And I think that was probably true even centuries ago, 400 years ago,

  410. when Bible translations were being made.

  411. Sometimes they were a little bit clunky and a little bit archaic when they were brand new.

  412. Because they were trying to get a hold of the truth written in Hebrew, written in Greek,

  413. that was itself reverent and presenting things to us

  414. that are not always common or ordinary or everyday.

  415. You cannot talk about Jesus and his cross without stopping,

  416. pausing, thinking, looking.

  417. And my problem and maybe your problem is that we're often so busy

  418. that we just don't stop to think, to meditate, to look.

  419. And our world and our culture is in such a hurry.

  420. It doesn't want to look at the cross.

  421. It finds God and the Bible an embarrassment.

  422. You can talk about spirituality.

  423. You can talk about culture.

  424. You can talk about belief.

  425. But if it becomes too focused on the story of the Scripture,

  426. we want to look the other way.

  427. That is sad.

  428. What do we have that invites us to look and to behold in John's Gospel

  429. and in the account of the cross in John?

  430. It's an eyewitness account.

  431. I don't doubt that John was an old man when he wrote this Gospel.

  432. And that probably at least three decades and maybe more had passed

  433. from the events he was talking about

  434. and coming to write them down.

  435. John was an old man when he died.

  436. But he talks about the cross

  437. in the way someone speaks about an event that is absolutely life-changing.

  438. A day he is never going to forget.

  439. And it's as if he's back there seeing things,

  440. hearing things.

  441. The sights and the smells of that day must have been appalling.

  442. There were others that he loved there.

  443. The family of Jesus was there.

  444. The enemies were there.

  445. But this reads as a first-hand account

  446. from a man who has had a lifetime to think about what he saw.

  447. Last night, if you were here,

  448. we were invited looking at the way Pilate treated Jesus

  449. to behold the man,

  450. to behold the king.

  451. What do we think of the prisoner

  452. who's getting this unjust trial?

  453. Tonight,

  454. behold the son

  455. Mary's son

  456. suffering and dying.

  457. Behold the son,

  458. God's son

  459. suffering and dying.

  460. And to behold

  461. the shame

  462. of it all.

  463. The shame

  464. that John remembers

  465. years

  466. afterwards.

  467. In chapter 18

  468. and at verse 15,

  469. you hear the language

  470. of the eyewitness.

  471. Simon Peter followed Jesus

  472. and so did another disciple.

  473. Since that disciple

  474. was known to the high priest,

  475. he entered with Jesus

  476. into the court of the high priest.

  477. And he was able to get Peter in as well.

  478. Who is this anonymous disciple

  479. who's being referred to in chapter 18?

  480. Surely it's John himself.

  481. He knows so much about what happened.

  482. And Peter wasn't there for the whole time.

  483. Peter went out and wept bitterly,

  484. having denied his Lord three times

  485. in the courtyard of the high priest.

  486. But the disciple

  487. who got him in

  488. is the disciple

  489. who doesn't like

  490. to talk about himself

  491. too much in this gospel.

  492. He always finds a way

  493. to say the disciple.

  494. The disciple who Jesus loved.

  495. He's talking about himself

  496. in chapter 18

  497. in all likelihood.

  498. And here in chapter 19

  499. from verse 16 onwards,

  500. again on the way to the cross,

  501. you have an eyewitness account.

  502. He is the disciple

  503. whom Jesus loved,

  504. who from that hour,

  505. the hour of the death of Jesus,

  506. would take Mary

  507. and be responsible for her

  508. until she died.

  509. Jesus was handing over

  510. the care of his beloved mother

  511. to his most well-beloved follower.

  512. Woman,

  513. behold your son.

  514. Son,

  515. behold

  516. your mother.

  517. Two things to notice this evening.

  518. First of all,

  519. the son

  520. is put to shame.

  521. The son

  522. is put to shame.

  523. In this eyewitness account,

  524. what does John want you

  525. to see?

  526. In verse 5,

  527. Pilate says,

  528. behold the man.

  529. And that word,

  530. behold,

  531. is a little bit like

  532. ringing a bell.

  533. Many key words

  534. run through

  535. the gospel of John.

  536. Many

  537. symbolical

  538. incidents

  539. keep being repeated.

  540. There are contrasts

  541. between, say,

  542. light and darkness

  543. in this gospel.

  544. And so,

  545. when you come across

  546. certain words,

  547. you look for connections.

  548. connections.

  549. And this word,

  550. behold,

  551. on the lips of Pilate

  552. in verse 5,

  553. is a very important word

  554. in the first chapter

  555. of this gospel.

  556. it's John the Baptist,

  557. the one witnessing

  558. on the side

  559. of the truth

  560. and preparing

  561. the way

  562. for the Messiah

  563. who sees Jesus

  564. and in chapter 1

  565. declares

  566. in verse 29

  567. and verse 36

  568. of chapter 1,

  569. behold

  570. the Lamb

  571. of God

  572. who takes away

  573. the sins

  574. of the world.

  575. in chapter 12,

  576. we have a quotation

  577. on Palm Sunday

  578. on the day

  579. that Jesus

  580. enters his city

  581. as a meek

  582. and lowly king

  583. to great acclamation

  584. from the crowds

  585. and they seem

  586. to want to make

  587. a king of him

  588. and they seem

  589. to love him.

  590. Five days later,

  591. they will be saying,

  592. kill him,

  593. away with him,

  594. crucify him,

  595. release Barabbas

  596. to us,

  597. but on Sunday

  598. before the cross,

  599. they're treating him

  600. like the Messiah

  601. and he's riding

  602. on a donkey,

  603. on a colt,

  604. the foal of a donkey

  605. and in John 12

    John 12:15

  606. verse 15 and 16

  607. there is an echo

  608. of the prophecy

  609. of Zechariah,

  610. behold your king

  611. is coming,

  612. sitting on a donkey's colt,

  613. but the comment

  614. of the writer

  615. in John 12

  616. is that at the time

  617. they failed

  618. to see Jesus

  619. as the fulfillment

  620. of all the promises

  621. about the coming king.

  622. At the time

  623. they did not understand

  624. but we're told

  625. chapter 12 verse 16

  626. when Jesus was glorified

  627. then they remembered

  628. that these things

  629. had been written

  630. about him.

  631. And what had the prophet said?

  632. Your king

  633. is coming to you

  634. but he's coming

  635. meekly

  636. and in peace

  637. and not to wage war.

  638. He's coming to die.

  639. It was after

  640. he was glorified

  641. that the scriptures

  642. about him

  643. made sense.

  644. But before

  645. they could see him

  646. in his glory

  647. and understand him

  648. he had to taste

  649. shame.

  650. And the beholds

  651. start to come

  652. thick and fast

  653. in our reading

  654. tonight.

  655. For in John 19

  656. we have

  657. behold

  658. in verse

  659. 14

  660. it was about

  661. the sixth hour

  662. so

  663. nobody wore a watch

  664. in those days

  665. but sixth hour

  666. is halfway through

  667. the day

  668. twelve hours

  669. in the day.

  670. So somewhere

  671. in the middle

  672. of the day

  673. Jesus is on the cross.

  674. The other gospels

  675. probably would move

  676. that up a bit earlier

  677. more towards

  678. the morning

  679. than towards

  680. the midday

  681. but these are not

  682. supposed to be

  683. specific time markers.

  684. It was about

  685. bright

  686. full

  687. sunlight

  688. midday

  689. when they put him

  690. on the cross.

  691. Behold

  692. your

  693. king

  694. on a cross.

  695. some king

  696. on a cross.

  697. And then

  698. you have

  699. behold

  700. in verse 26

  701. and in verse 27

  702. and we're supposed

  703. to remember

  704. the behold

  705. in chapter 1

  706. I think.

  707. Look

  708. the Lamb of God

  709. taking away

  710. the sin of the world.

  711. Look

  712. the king

  713. on a cross

  714. taking away

  715. the sin of the world.

  716. And in verse 26

  717. verse 27

  718. woman

  719. behold

  720. your son.

  721. your son

  722. is dying.

  723. So from now on

  724. John will be

  725. your son.

  726. John

  727. behold

  728. your mother.

  729. I'm dying.

  730. From now on

  731. Mary will be

  732. your care.

  733. The son

  734. tasting death

  735. tasting pain

  736. tasting rejection

  737. being the Lamb

  738. of God

  739. what does

  740. the writer

  741. want you to see?

  742. Shame.

  743. Judgment.

  744. The wrath

  745. of God

  746. on this man.

  747. I think

  748. the way

  749. I've been

  750. conditioned

  751. to think

  752. and the way

  753. the church

  754. in the West

  755. has presented

  756. the cross

  757. from the time

  758. of the Reformation

  759. onwards

  760. the way

  761. we've tended

  762. to talk

  763. about the cross

  764. think about it

  765. disciple

  766. our children

  767. preach about it

  768. we have tended

  769. to focus

  770. quite rightly

  771. on how

  772. the cross

  773. answers the

  774. problem

  775. of guilt

  776. before God

  777. and removes

  778. the reality

  779. of sin

  780. before God

  781. sin is a

  782. real problem

  783. there is a

  784. real debt

  785. and the cross

  786. deals with it

  787. and solves it

  788. and the Reformation

  789. was about

  790. recovering a

  791. biblical idea

  792. of how the

  793. death of Jesus

  794. saves people

  795. by dealing

  796. with our

  797. sin

  798. one sacrifice

  799. dealing with

  800. guilt

  801. justifying

  802. sinners

  803. in a

  804. righteous

  805. way

  806. but there's

  807. an aspect

  808. of the work

  809. of Jesus

  810. on the cross

  811. that the

  812. early church

  813. seemed to

  814. understand

  815. that the

  816. church in

  817. the first

  818. few centuries

  819. seemed to

  820. understand

  821. that I

  822. don't think

  823. we've been

  824. so good at

  825. holding on

  826. to

  827. in the

  828. last few

  829. centuries

  830. certainly

  831. in Europe

  832. and in

  833. the West

  834. and that

  835. is not so

  836. much dealing

  837. with

  838. objective

  839. guilt

  840. but dealing

  841. with the

  842. consequences

  843. of guilt

  844. on our

  845. minds

  846. and on

  847. our hearts

  848. what we

  849. could call

  850. shame

  851. shame

  852. and guilt

  853. are obviously

  854. related

  855. they're obviously

  856. connected

  857. and guilt

  858. should make

  859. you feel

  860. ashamed

  861. if you really

  862. are guilty

  863. naturally

  864. you would

  865. expect to

  866. feel shame

  867. but what I

  868. want to say

  869. to you

  870. is that in

  871. the world

  872. that Jesus

  873. lived in

  874. in that

  875. ancient

  876. world

  877. people cared

  878. as much

  879. about

  880. shame

  881. loss of

  882. dignity

  883. loss of

  884. glory

  885. loss of

  886. name

  887. loss of

  888. face

  889. they cared

  890. as much

  891. about it

  892. as they

  893. cared about

  894. issues of

  895. truth

  896. I'm not

  897. going to

  898. play down

  899. issues of

  900. truth

  901. sin

  902. is sin

  903. guilt

  904. is guilt

  905. and we

  906. should care

  907. about these

  908. facts

  909. but while

  910. we care

  911. about these

  912. facts

  913. we should

  914. also care

  915. about

  916. what these

  917. facts

  918. mean

  919. for how

  920. people

  921. feel

  922. and how

  923. they relate

  924. to other

  925. people

  926. and how

  927. they relate

  928. to God

  929. because in

  930. the ancient

  931. world their

  932. culture was

  933. much more

  934. a culture

  935. of shame

  936. and honour

  937. so if I

  938. swear

  939. that's a

  940. sin

  941. if I

  942. swear

  943. in front

  944. of my

  945. grandmother

  946. or my

  947. mother

  948. or a

  949. four year

  950. old

  951. child

  952. that's

  953. still a

  954. sin

  955. but it's

  956. also a

  957. shame

  958. it's a

  959. disgrace

  960. it's a

  961. dishonour

  962. and

  963. the

  964. Bible

  965. wants you

  966. to look

  967. at the

  968. cross

  969. and see

  970. that Jesus

  971. carries

  972. guilt

  973. and he

  974. pays for

  975. it

  976. and he

  977. answers for

  978. it

  979. but he

  980. also

  981. experiences

  982. rejection

  983. and dishonour

  984. and disgrace

  985. and mocking

  986. and shame

  987. and that's

  988. part of the

  989. good news

  990. of the

  991. gospel

  992. because we

  993. live in a

  994. world where

  995. people

  996. sometimes

  997. rightly

  998. feel shame

  999. and sometimes

  1000. wrongly

  1001. are drowning

  1002. in shame

  1003. when objective

  1004. truth says

  1005. you are a

  1006. child of God

  1007. you have peace

  1008. with God

  1009. you have

  1010. been forgiven

  1011. Jesus has

  1012. died for

  1013. your sins

  1014. he has

  1015. paid for

  1016. your sins

  1017. and still

  1018. whether it's

  1019. the culture

  1020. you grew up

  1021. in

  1022. the home

  1023. you grew up

  1024. in

  1025. the way

  1026. you're wired

  1027. yourself

  1028. or people

  1029. around you

  1030. or the

  1031. work of

  1032. Satan

  1033. you believe

  1034. you are

  1035. worthless

  1036. you believe

  1037. you are

  1038. unloved

  1039. you believe

  1040. you are

  1041. rubbish

  1042. you are

  1043. ashamed

  1044. now the

  1045. cross

  1046. deals with

  1047. both

  1048. sin

  1049. guilt

  1050. and

  1051. shame

  1052. Hebrews 12

  1053. begins

  1054. let us run

  1055. with perseverance

  1056. the race

  1057. marked out

  1058. for us

  1059. fixing our

  1060. eyes on

  1061. Jesus

  1062. the pioneer

  1063. and

  1064. perfecter

  1065. of faith

  1066. for the

  1067. joy set

  1068. before him

  1069. he endured

  1070. the cross

  1071. scorning

  1072. its

  1073. shame

  1074. and

  1075. sat down

  1076. at the

  1077. right hand

  1078. of the

  1079. throne

  1080. of God

  1081. thank

  1082. the Lord

  1083. Jesus

  1084. Christ

  1085. that

  1086. God's

  1087. Son

  1088. was put

  1089. to shame

  1090. for your

  1091. salvation

  1092. and

  1093. his

  1094. disgrace

  1095. is

  1096. the

  1097. answer

  1098. to

  1099. any

  1100. shame

  1101. that is

  1102. crushing

  1103. you

  1104. today

  1105. that's

  1106. the first

  1107. thing

  1108. the Son

  1109. is put

  1110. to shame

  1111. the second

  1112. thing that

  1113. we have

  1114. here

  1115. is an

  1116. invitation

  1117. through the

  1118. gospel

  1119. to nail

  1120. your

  1121. shame

  1122. to the

  1123. tree

  1124. to nail

  1125. it

  1126. to his

  1127. cross

  1128. to his

  1129. tree

  1130. why do I

  1131. labor this

  1132. point about

  1133. shame

  1134. well

  1135. as the

  1136. soldiers

  1137. gamble over

  1138. his clothes

  1139. it

  1140. dawns

  1141. on us

  1142. that

  1143. Jesus

  1144. who was

  1145. forced to

  1146. carry

  1147. his

  1148. cross

  1149. probably

  1150. just the

  1151. beam across

  1152. his shoulders

  1153. to the

  1154. place of

  1155. execution

  1156. he was

  1157. stripped

  1158. naked

  1159. before he

  1160. was nailed

  1161. to the

  1162. cross

  1163. to be

  1164. in pain

  1165. and to

  1166. be mocked

  1167. and to

  1168. be facing

  1169. death in

  1170. the next

  1171. few hours

  1172. or minutes

  1173. is bad

  1174. don't you

  1175. think to

  1176. face all

  1177. that

  1178. absolutely

  1179. naked

  1180. is even

  1181. worse

  1182. in terms

  1183. of shame

  1184. there's

  1185. something that

  1186. Don Carson

  1187. says in

  1188. his writings

  1189. about the

  1190. cross and

  1191. on John's

  1192. gospel that

  1193. is worth

  1194. quoting

  1195. Carson

  1196. says in

  1197. the ancient

  1198. world this

  1199. most terrible

  1200. of punishments

  1201. is always

  1202. associated

  1203. with shame

  1204. and

  1205. horror

  1206. it is

  1207. predicted of

  1208. course in

  1209. prophecy in

  1210. the Old

  1211. Testament in

  1212. scriptures like

  1213. Psalm 22

  1214. which we

  1215. sang from

  1216. a few

  1217. minutes ago

  1218. a thousand

  1219. years before

  1220. Jesus was

  1221. placed on

  1222. the cross

  1223. in fulfillment

  1224. David had

  1225. tasted shame

  1226. and David

  1227. understood

  1228. that God

  1229. and God

  1230. alone can

  1231. lift shame

  1232. from the

  1233. shoulders of

  1234. his people

  1235. but how

  1236. how would

  1237. God lift

  1238. shame

  1239. from his

  1240. people

  1241. how would

  1242. he do

  1243. it

  1244. if people

  1245. are oppressing

  1246. us by

  1247. trying to

  1248. give us

  1249. inappropriate

  1250. shame

  1251. maybe

  1252. legalism

  1253. sometimes

  1254. tries to

  1255. do that

  1256. rules that

  1257. don't come

  1258. with any

  1259. good sense

  1260. and they

  1261. don't come

  1262. with the

  1263. word of

  1264. God behind

  1265. them

  1266. expectations

  1267. that are

  1268. beyond

  1269. human

  1270. ability

  1271. Jesus

  1272. met people

  1273. like that

  1274. the Pharisees

  1275. of old

  1276. were experts

  1277. at spreading

  1278. illegitimate

  1279. shame

  1280. are you

  1281. washing your

  1282. hands the

  1283. right way

  1284. when your

  1285. disciples feed

  1286. themselves in

  1287. the fields

  1288. with the

  1289. heads of

  1290. the corn

  1291. are they

  1292. breaking the

  1293. Sabbath

  1294. it's

  1295. nonsense

  1296. of course

  1297. but I'm

  1298. sure if

  1299. you are

  1300. accused

  1301. of

  1302. breaking

  1303. some

  1304. man-made

  1305. taboo

  1306. even if

  1307. you know

  1308. with your

  1309. head

  1310. that's

  1311. ridiculous

  1312. it's very

  1313. hard not

  1314. to feel

  1315. shame

  1316. we are

  1317. experts

  1318. we humans

  1319. at ignoring

  1320. real sin

  1321. and things

  1322. that stink

  1323. before God

  1324. and making

  1325. a great

  1326. fuss about

  1327. things that

  1328. don't matter

  1329. well we

  1330. need to

  1331. repent

  1332. of that

  1333. and nail

  1334. it to

  1335. his cross

  1336. and we

  1337. need to

  1338. care about

  1339. real holiness

  1340. and God's

  1341. glory

  1342. and God's

  1343. name

  1344. and the

  1345. great name

  1346. of God

  1347. being lifted

  1348. up high

  1349. where it is

  1350. not known

  1351. or where it's

  1352. lying in the

  1353. gutter

  1354. and not

  1355. just care

  1356. about my

  1357. name

  1358. or your

  1359. name

  1360. or the

  1361. things that

  1362. seem

  1363. more important

  1364. in my

  1365. kitchen

  1366. and probably

  1367. in yours

  1368. there is

  1369. a smoke

  1370. detector

  1371. nowadays

  1372. these things

  1373. are

  1374. very clever

  1375. they're often

  1376. wired into

  1377. the mains

  1378. or they're

  1379. linked to

  1380. other smoke

  1381. detectors

  1382. and carbon

  1383. monoxide detectors

  1384. in the

  1385. house

  1386. and they

  1387. make a racket

  1388. if they go

  1389. off

  1390. so if you

  1391. burn your

  1392. breakfast

  1393. burn your

  1394. toast

  1395. the whole

  1396. street knows

  1397. about it

  1398. and you

  1399. probably have

  1400. been like me

  1401. many a time

  1402. standing on a

  1403. kitchen chair

  1404. waving a

  1405. copy of a

  1406. magazine or

  1407. something

  1408. furiously

  1409. trying to get

  1410. fresh air

  1411. at one of

  1412. these detectors

  1413. that has taken

  1414. a dislike

  1415. to the way

  1416. you made

  1417. the breakfast

  1418. these machines

  1419. are giving

  1420. a warning

  1421. and often

  1422. it's a

  1423. piercing

  1424. warning

  1425. and God

  1426. gave us

  1427. shame

  1428. to help

  1429. us

  1430. to hear

  1431. the warning

  1432. so that

  1433. when the

  1434. warning of

  1435. shame

  1436. goes off

  1437. like an

  1438. alarm

  1439. it says

  1440. to us

  1441. am I

  1442. dishonoring

  1443. God

  1444. what can I

  1445. do about

  1446. it

  1447. am I

  1448. drifting

  1449. into sin

  1450. what can I

  1451. do about

  1452. it

  1453. am I

  1454. heading

  1455. away

  1456. from joy

  1457. and glory

  1458. and salvation

  1459. and towards

  1460. the jaws

  1461. of death

  1462. and hell

  1463. am I

  1464. pleasing

  1465. God

  1466. or pleasing

  1467. Satan

  1468. and sometimes

  1469. the alarm

  1470. is blaring

  1471. and there

  1472. is no

  1473. fire

  1474. because our

  1475. heart

  1476. and mind

  1477. has gone

  1478. wrong

  1479. and we're

  1480. feeling shame

  1481. when we

  1482. shouldn't

  1483. I

  1484. could never

  1485. sit at the

  1486. Lord's

  1487. table

  1488. because

  1489. well

  1490. whatever

  1491. comes next

  1492. in the

  1493. sentence

  1494. is rubbish

  1495. if you

  1496. have been

  1497. forgiven

  1498. your sins

  1499. because of

  1500. Christ

  1501. and his

  1502. cross

  1503. if you

  1504. have confessed

  1505. your sins

  1506. then the

  1507. blood of

  1508. Jesus

  1509. Christ

  1510. God's

  1511. son

  1512. cleanses

  1513. us

  1514. from all

  1515. sin

  1516. and if the

  1517. devil

  1518. has caused

  1519. the alarm

  1520. to start

  1521. sounding

  1522. of shame

  1523. we check

  1524. is this

  1525. alarm

  1526. right

  1527. or is it

  1528. a false

  1529. alarm

  1530. but in

  1531. either

  1532. case

  1533. we flee

  1534. to the

  1535. cross

  1536. of Jesus

  1537. and if

  1538. fear

  1539. or guilt

  1540. or shame

  1541. is illegitimate

  1542. we speak

  1543. to Jesus

  1544. about it

  1545. and we

  1546. say I

  1547. feel so

  1548. weak

  1549. I feel

  1550. so useless

  1551. I feel

  1552. such shame

  1553. help me

  1554. to nail

  1555. it to

  1556. your tree

  1557. and if

  1558. we discover

  1559. that the

  1560. alarm is

  1561. quite right

  1562. to be going

  1563. off

  1564. and that

  1565. we are

  1566. a terrible

  1567. woman

  1568. a terrible

  1569. man

  1570. a wicked

  1571. woman

  1572. a wicked

  1573. man

  1574. then the

  1575. gospel is

  1576. for us

  1577. and the

  1578. gospel

  1579. is the

  1580. gospel of

  1581. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  1582. 1

  1583. behold the

  1584. Lamb of

  1585. God

  1586. who takes

  1587. away the

  1588. sins of

  1589. the world

  1590. and the

  1591. gospel is

  1592. the gospel

  1593. where the

  1594. grain of

  1595. wheat falls

  1596. into the

  1597. ground

  1598. and it

  1599. dies

  1600. and that

  1601. way there's

  1602. fruit

  1603. and you

  1604. are the

  1605. fruit

  1606. he dies

  1607. so that

  1608. you will

  1609. be fruitful

  1610. not held

  1611. by guilt

  1612. not held

  1613. by shame

  1614. but because

  1615. of Christ

  1616. going forward

  1617. in the life

  1618. of faith

  1619. going forward

  1620. in Christian

  1621. growth

  1622. going forward

  1623. to live

  1624. for the

  1625. glory of

  1626. God

  1627. for most

  1628. of our

  1629. lives

  1630. we probably

  1631. have not

  1632. lived

  1633. in a

  1634. shame

  1635. kind of

  1636. culture

  1637. shame

  1638. on our

  1639. culture

  1640. like

  1641. India

  1642. or Japan

  1643. or much

  1644. of East

  1645. Asia

  1646. is a

  1647. shame

  1648. kind of

  1649. culture

  1650. you

  1651. you know

  1652. even Christians

  1653. in in

  1654. Southeast Asia

  1655. will often

  1656. really struggle

  1657. to be honest

  1658. with each

  1659. other

  1660. about a

  1661. problem

  1662. they'll

  1663. struggle

  1664. to speak

  1665. honestly

  1666. and say

  1667. that's

  1668. a root

  1669. of bitterness

  1670. that's

  1671. caused

  1672. offence

  1673. we need

  1674. to discuss

  1675. this

  1676. sort it

  1677. out

  1678. weep

  1679. over it

  1680. and then

  1681. make up

  1682. and love

  1683. one another

  1684. and move

  1685. forward

  1686. in Asia

  1687. very often

  1688. Christians

  1689. they don't

  1690. do that

  1691. because

  1692. their culture

  1693. says

  1694. you can't

  1695. be embarrassed

  1696. and you can't

  1697. embarrass

  1698. anybody else

  1699. so we'll

  1700. just ignore

  1701. it

  1702. and avoid

  1703. each other

  1704. for the rest

  1705. of our lives

  1706. that is not

  1707. the gospel

  1708. way

  1709. the gospel

  1710. way

  1711. is to go

  1712. to the cross

  1713. with guilt

  1714. and

  1715. to go

  1716. to the cross

  1717. with shame

  1718. legitimate

  1719. or illegitimate

  1720. shame

  1721. it needs

  1722. to be nailed

  1723. to the tree

  1724. for he

  1725. tasted

  1726. shame

  1727. and death

  1728. to take

  1729. that bitter

  1730. taste

  1731. away

  1732. from his

  1733. people

  1734. he does

  1735. not want

  1736. you

  1737. burdened

  1738. by shame

  1739. paralyzed

  1740. by the

  1741. past

  1742. if you

  1743. are

  1744. part of

  1745. this modern

  1746. world

  1747. of technology

  1748. and social

  1749. media

  1750. then

  1751. it is

  1752. doubly

  1753. hard

  1754. for us

  1755. today

  1756. to avoid

  1757. the idea

  1758. that everybody

  1759. else has a

  1760. wonderful life

  1761. and a rosy

  1762. life

  1763. and they're

  1764. all doing

  1765. wonderful things

  1766. and we

  1767. may feel

  1768. that that's

  1769. not

  1770. us

  1771. and it's

  1772. very easy

  1773. in this

  1774. modern age

  1775. to believe

  1776. a lie

  1777. or to

  1778. spread a

  1779. lie

  1780. or to

  1781. tell a

  1782. lie

  1783. using

  1784. things like

  1785. Instagram

  1786. or Facebook

  1787. the cross

  1788. says

  1789. if these

  1790. things are

  1791. a problem

  1792. if these

  1793. things are

  1794. holding you

  1795. back

  1796. spiritually

  1797. from maturity

  1798. and peace

  1799. and love

  1800. and unity

  1801. with your

  1802. family

  1803. or with your

  1804. brothers and

  1805. sisters in the

  1806. Christian family

  1807. there's a

  1808. cross

  1809. take your

  1810. use of

  1811. time

  1812. and nail it

  1813. to the tree

  1814. take your

  1815. use of

  1816. social media

  1817. and nail it

  1818. to the tree

  1819. take your

  1820. use of

  1821. gossip

  1822. rumor

  1823. nail it

  1824. to the

  1825. tree

  1826. I heard a

  1827. testimony

  1828. about a

  1829. year ago

  1830. from a

  1831. lady

  1832. who came

  1833. forward

  1834. having lived

  1835. with shame

  1836. over a

  1837. serious

  1838. thing

  1839. from years

  1840. before

  1841. a thing

  1842. she regretted

  1843. and a thing

  1844. she was

  1845. forgiven for

  1846. but a thing

  1847. that was

  1848. many decades

  1849. in her

  1850. past

  1851. and yet

  1852. it had

  1853. held her

  1854. back for

  1855. such a

  1856. long time

  1857. and it

  1858. was the

  1859. gospel

  1860. Jesus

  1861. and his

  1862. cross

  1863. that enabled

  1864. her

  1865. to just

  1866. tell her

  1867. story

  1868. and by

  1869. taking a

  1870. little step

  1871. of faith

  1872. and commitment

  1873. and getting

  1874. a little

  1875. more involved

  1876. in the

  1877. life of

  1878. the local

  1879. church

  1880. now serving

  1881. so well

  1882. being a

  1883. blessing to

  1884. others

  1885. being an

  1886. encourager to

  1887. others

  1888. because what

  1889. happened to

  1890. that shame

  1891. that Satan

  1892. was really

  1893. happy for

  1894. her to live

  1895. under for

  1896. for 30

  1897. years

  1898. well it's

  1899. gone

  1900. Jesus

  1901. took it

  1902. Pilate put

  1903. a notice

  1904. above the

  1905. head of

  1906. the Lord

  1907. Jesus

  1908. in Aramaic

  1909. the language

  1910. of the

  1911. common

  1912. people

  1913. in Latin

  1914. the language

  1915. of the

  1916. authorities

  1917. of the

  1918. Roman Empire

  1919. and in

  1920. Greek

  1921. the common

  1922. language spoken

  1923. all around

  1924. the world

  1925. this is the

  1926. king of

  1927. the Jews

  1928. why did

  1929. he write

  1930. it

  1931. well

  1932. Pilate

  1933. had been

  1934. ashamed

  1935. and embarrassed

  1936. by Caiaphas

  1937. and his

  1938. chums

  1939. and he

  1940. I think

  1941. was trying

  1942. to annoy

  1943. the Jews

  1944. and mock

  1945. Jesus

  1946. and mock

  1947. those who

  1948. had Jesus

  1949. crucified

  1950. there's the

  1951. claim

  1952. there's your

  1953. king

  1954. no I won't

  1955. change the

  1956. notice

  1957. it's part

  1958. of shaming

  1959. shaming

  1960. everyone

  1961. but you

  1962. know what

  1963. he was

  1964. the king

  1965. he is

  1966. the king

  1967. and because

  1968. the king

  1969. died on

  1970. that cross

  1971. shame

  1972. is

  1973. gone

  1974. we have

  1975. a young

  1976. lad

  1977. in our

  1978. congregation

  1979. who was

  1980. just converted

  1981. about

  1982. last

  1983. summer

  1984. from

  1985. atheism

  1986. nobody

  1987. in his

  1988. family

  1989. is a

  1990. Christian

  1991. somebody

  1992. in his

  1993. high school

  1994. challenged

  1995. his

  1996. atheism

  1997. have you

  1998. really

  1999. looked

  2000. into

  2001. this

  2002. and he

  2003. was

  2004. honest

  2005. enough

  2006. to

  2007. acknowledge

  2008. that he

  2009. hadn't

  2010. and so

  2011. he did

  2012. his

  2013. research

  2014. and he

  2015. went to

  2016. google

  2017. and he

  2018. found out

  2019. a bit

  2020. about the

  2021. bible

  2022. and christianity

  2023. and he

  2024. started to

  2025. read

  2026. and he

  2027. started to

  2028. read good

  2029. things

  2030. and god

  2031. saved him

  2032. and brought

  2033. him into

  2034. fellowship

  2035. with a

  2036. christian

  2037. church

  2038. he was

  2039. baptized on

  2040. profession of

  2041. faith on

  2042. christmas eve

  2043. and i met him

  2044. this week

  2045. we had a

  2046. coffee

  2047. we read the

  2048. first chapter

  2049. of romans

  2050. together

  2051. we prayed

  2052. together

  2053. what a happy

  2054. day in

  2055. ministry that

  2056. was

  2057. with a

  2058. he's now

  2059. seventeen

  2060. and i asked

  2061. him what he

  2062. was doing

  2063. and he told

  2064. me while i'd

  2065. been doing

  2066. some writing

  2067. i found

  2068. this great

  2069. hymn he

  2070. said do

  2071. you know

  2072. it

  2073. i'd heard

  2074. of it

  2075. when i

  2076. survey the

  2077. wondrous

  2078. cross

  2079. by isaac

  2080. waltz

  2081. you've

  2082. heard of

  2083. it

  2084. well this

  2085. boy

  2086. new to

  2087. christian

  2088. things

  2089. is writing

  2090. an essay

  2091. unpacking

  2092. every line

  2093. of that

  2094. hymn

  2095. for the

  2096. biblical

  2097. truth

  2098. that is

  2099. in it

  2100. see

  2101. from his

  2102. head

  2103. his hands

  2104. his feet

  2105. sorrow

  2106. and love

  2107. flow

  2108. mingle

  2109. down

  2110. did

  2111. e'er

  2112. such

  2113. love

  2114. and sorrow

  2115. meet

  2116. or thorns
