  1. I do want, however, to take this opportunity to thank Reverend Angus McRae for his willingness to come to take the services at this communion time, including this morning, the communion service itself.

  2. I'd like to thank him on your behalf for his ministry, that ministry which we, I'm sure, all enjoyed and benefited from as he led us so ably through John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  3. And I think he'll be finishing that off for us this evening.

  4. So, Angus, thank you very much indeed for your contribution and for coming to this, what was, as you said, yourself, your home congregation one time.

  5. We're pleased to have had you and we trust that God will bless you in your own ministry in Inverness, Free North, yourself and Anne, family and everybody associated with your ministry there.

  6. So, thank you for that.

  7. Thank you very much for these very kind words and it has been a pleasure and refreshing to be with you and to be encouraged indeed by seeing many signs of God's love and favour among you.

  8. And we pray God's blessing on the islands and on all of our nation.

  9. We so need to return to God and to his word.

  10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom.

  11. And may we all know the love and the goodness and the fear of our Lord.

  12. Thank you for your prayers and for your warm welcome.

  13. Let us worship God as we sing together in the 100th Psalm from the Scottish Psalter.

  14. If you have a psalm book in your hand, Psalm 100, the first version on page 362.

  15. Singing to old 100th, all people that on earth do dwell.

  16. Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.

  17. Let's stand and praise God with the 100th Psalm.

  18. Amen.

  19. All people that on earth do dwell.

  20. Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.

  21. Him set with mirthless praise for tell.

  22. Know that the Lord is God in me.

  23. We are his strong King of the sea.

  24. We are his strong King of the sea.

  25. And for his sheep King of the sea.

  26. All entered in his gates with praise.

  27. And looked with joy his poor son too.

  28. charity with honourable voice.

  29. By God with mercy James saw life.

  30. For now Coalition isashillous baby線.

  31. In the 100th Psalmلبw.

  32. At Northside as barcode his sin,

  33. We need to sing that part of the world.

  34. It isersolous baby線.

  35. And for of the 100th Psalm 또고.

  36. For now encuentroôt is known.

  37. Game of theoyape powiedz.

  38. Even though Cage his ruimtes is spent.

  39. Our God is good, His mercy is forever true,

  40. This truth that all times were pleased to,

  41. And shall flourish to each end you.

  42. Amen, what lovely singing.

  43. We turn to God in prayer.

  44. Let us pray.

  45. Know that the Lord is God indeed.

  46. Gracious Father, we draw near in the name that you love to hear,

  47. In the name of your worthy Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  48. We ask that we may worship you as we should,

  49. Knowing that the Lord is God,

  50. And knowing that the Lord is good,

  51. And worthy of praise and thanksgiving.

  52. We have individual reasons to worship you.

  53. You have been good to each one of us.

  54. And as a church fellowship and family,

  55. Here in this congregation, there are countless reasons to give thanks.

  56. As a community and island, as a nation,

  57. And as a church of Jesus Christ across the globe,

  58. We find ourselves ever in a place where we have been blessed,

  59. Far beyond what we might deserve.

  60. So we come to the gate of God,

  61. To the house of God,

  62. Into the company of God's people,

  63. And we sing with ages past,

  64. O enter then his gates with praise,

  65. Approach with joy his courts unto.

  66. Give us your Holy Spirit,

  67. Who is the means of joy that overcomes fear,

  68. And anxiety,

  69. And sickness,

  70. And all the works of the enemy of our souls,

  71. And all our own frailty.

  72. Give us supernatural help and supernatural grace,

  73. To grasp in our hearts and minds,

  74. What is the length and the height,

  75. And the breadth and the depth,

  76. Of your great love for us,

  77. In Jesus.

  78. We worship you for the gift of a gospel,

  79. To share with one another,

  80. And with this community,

  81. And with our world.

  82. Help us faithfully to receive,

  83. And then to pass on,

  84. The good news,

  85. The gospel of your Son.

  86. You have sent,

  87. Your messengers out,

  88. And you have sent your church out,

  89. Each one of us,

  90. To be messengers of your grace,

  91. And of your peace.

  92. And you have sent out,

  93. Both your Son who came in the flesh,

  94. And your Spirit,

  95. Who has always been working from the creation,

  96. And will continue working,

  97. Until there is a new creation.

  98. But especially in this age,

  99. Following the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  100. The Spirit is poured out,

  101. To give life,

  102. In a dying world.

  103. Good news,

  104. Good news,

  105. Of eternal life,

  106. Help us then,

  107. To come into your kingdom of love,

  108. And if we have not come in before,

  109. Grant grace to us,

  110. To come into that kingdom today,

  111. And to know the Lord,

  112. And that he is good,

  113. And to know Jesus,

  114. And that he has given himself for us,

  115. Lord,

  116. In our need,

  117. Show us the face of your Son,

  118. And may brightness and radiance shine,

  119. From him,

  120. Into our souls,

  121. As we read your word,

  122. And sing your praise,

  123. Speak to each one of us,

  124. And may none of us go home,

  125. Without having the experience,

  126. Of God being real to us,

  127. And give to us,

  128. Faith,

  129. And trust,

  130. And love,

  131. And repentance,

  132. That we may leave our sorrows,

  133. And our sins,

  134. And go to Jesus,

  135. And find in him,

  136. Rest,

  137. And hope,

  138. For children,

  139. And young people,

  140. In this gathering,

  141. Perhaps listening at home,

  142. For all who are part of this church,

  143. And for all who are in our prayers,

  144. Do us good,

  145. And grant to add to your church,

  146. In these days,

  147. Through conversion,

  148. Through new life,

  149. Spiritually,

  150. Many,

  151. Young and old,

  152. Men and women,

  153. Whatever our past,

  154. And whatever we face today,

  155. Or in the future,

  156. May we lean on you,

  157. Lord,

  158. If we have questions,

  159. Grant your spirit,

  160. That we may find answers,

  161. If we have troubles,

  162. May we give them over to you,

  163. Remember the pastor,

  164. We give thanks,

  165. For the ministry,

  166. That you have given,

  167. To James McKeever,

  168. Among the people here,

  169. Over these last eight years,

  170. And we ask,

  171. That you would give strength,

  172. And joy,

  173. For the days that are ahead,

  174. To James,

  175. And to Donna,

  176. Adding healing,

  177. And strength to them,

  178. And encouragement,

  179. And joy,

  180. And we give thanks,

  181. For the ministry,

  182. Alongside him,

  183. Of Calum Murdo,

  184. And of the elders,

  185. And of all whom they love,

  186. And we bless you,

  187. And thank you,

  188. For faithful,

  189. Pastors and teachers,

  190. And for those,

  191. Who show through,

  192. Hospitality,

  193. And through the diligence,

  194. Of being shepherds,

  195. Of your sheep,

  196. A care,

  197. For all the flock,

  198. For every member,

  199. Of the flock,

  200. Help us,

  201. As your people,

  202. To care for one another,

  203. And to notice,

  204. Those who are straying,

  205. Or in difficulties,

  206. Or lonely,

  207. Or in need of a blessing,

  208. Or an encouragement,

  209. Help us,

  210. Lord,

  211. To follow the good shepherd,

  212. And his voice,

  213. And to listen,

  214. To teaching,

  215. From those who shepherd,

  216. In his name,

  217. And to be led,

  218. In the way of righteousness,

  219. And in the way of peace,

  220. The fear of the Lord,

  221. Truly is,

  222. The beginning of knowledge,

  223. And wisdom,

  224. So grant us,

  225. Love and fear,

  226. We pray these things,

  227. Through Jesus Christ,

  228. To whom be honor,

  229. And glory,

  230. Amen,

  231. Amen,

  232. We're going to praise the Lord,

  233. With a psalm,

  234. We maybe don't sing quite so often,

  235. Psalm 111,

  236. This one from the Scottish Psalter,

  237. Psalm 111,

  238. The opening four verses,

  239. To the Tunargeal,

  240. Psalm 111,

  241. Praise ye the Lord,

  242. With my whole heart,

  243. I will God's praise declare,

  244. Where the assemblies of the just,

  245. And congregations are,

  246. It's on page 391,

  247. Psalm 111,

  248. To God's praise,

  249. I will God's praise,

  250. Please be the Lord,

  251. With my whole heart,

  252. I will God's praise declare,

  253. Where the assemblies of the just,

  254. And humph considemess,

  255. The full works of the Lord,

  256. Our God,

  257. Our great honour,

  258. Thank you.

  259. Thank you.

  260. Thank you.

  261. Thank you.

  262. Thank you.

  263. Thank you.

  264. Thank you.

  265. John 19.

  266. Verse 38.

  267. John tells us in chapter 18 about the arrest and the trial of Jesus.

  268. And the outcome of that in chapter 19 is a very unjust verdict.

  269. Jesus is led to be crucified.

  270. He is nailed to the tree and he dies.

  271. And what comes next?

  272. And what does it all mean?

  273. So we turn for the last time in this communion weekend to think about the man on the cross.

  274. Behold the man.

  275. And tonight reading about his burial and resurrection.

  276. Behold the gardener and his tomb.

  277. John 19.

  278. Verse 38.

  279. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews,

  280. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus.

  281. And Pilate gave him permission.

  282. So he came and took away his body.

  283. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 75 pounds in weight.

  284. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  285. Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden.

  286. And in the garden, a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.

  287. So because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

  288. And in chapter 20, verse 1, I'll actually read verse 1 and 2.

  289. Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark,

  290. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  291. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved,

  292. and said to them, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.

  293. And at verse 11, after these facts had been checked, the men visited the grave and left.

  294. But in verse 11, but Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.

  295. And as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb, and she saw two angels in white,

  296. sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.

  297. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  298. She said to them, they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.

  299. Having said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.

  300. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  301. Whom are you seeking?

  302. Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,

  303. Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.

  304. And so on.

  305. This is God's truth, his inspired and holy word.

  306. May he bless it to each one of us.

  307. Well, before we consider something of these verses, we're going to sing from Sing Psalms,

  308. and from Psalm 9 in Sing Psalms, the version A of Psalm 9, and that is on page 9, I believe.

  309. Psalm 9A on page 9 of the Psalm book, singing the verses 15 to 20 of the Psalm.

  310. The tune is Paisley.

  311. Verse 15, the nations all have fallen down into the pit they made.

  312. Their feet are tangled in the net, which they themselves have laid.

  313. And on to the verse marked 20 from verse 15.

  314. The nations all have fallen down into the pit they made.

  315. Their feet are tangled in the net, which they themselves have laid.

  316. The Lord is known by righteous heart, His justice always stands.

  317. The wicked are then still in drought, the work of their own hands.

  318. The wicked will return to pay, the dead have laid on hold.

  319. Where all the heathen nations hold, have tough forgotten God.

  320. The needy will not be ignored, or gotten all their days.

  321. The wolves and longings of the bird will not be crushed away.

  322. Our minds forwardening

  323. March like and down.

  324. It's our prayer that God will give us all

  325. a hearing ear

  326. to hear his voice

  327. in the word of God tonight.

  328. And it may be that someone is praying for you

  329. that you will hear his voice

  330. in a new and special way.

  331. And it may be that you have been prayed

  332. for all your life

  333. and yet you have not heard

  334. the voice of the Lord.

  335. May tonight be the night

  336. when God speaks

  337. and we hear.

  338. Gracious Lord, we need wisdom.

  339. Salvation.

  340. Truth.

  341. Jesus.

  342. Draw near, we pray in his name.

  343. Amen.

  344. The end of chapter 19 of John's Gospel

  345. and the beginning of chapter 20

  346. of John's Gospel.

  347. The story of the gardener and his tomb.

  348. Behold, the gardener

  349. and his tomb.

  350. I've lived through some parts of my life

  351. that went by in a blink.

  352. Lots going on

  353. and busy, busy, busy

  354. and it just goes by in a moment.

  355. And I guess, like you,

  356. I've also lived through days

  357. that felt like months.

  358. Waiting for a phone to ring.

  359. Waiting for news.

  360. Uncertain.

  361. Unable to sit.

  362. Unable to walk.

  363. Unable to think.

  364. Unable to pray.

  365. Unable to do anything.

  366. Unable to pray.

  367. Unable to pray.

  368. And the minutes tick by

  369. so slowly.

  370. What kind of day

  371. do you think

  372. the high

  373. Sabbath

  374. was

  375. at that

  376. Passover

  377. in Jerusalem?

  378. The preparation

  379. day

  380. is the way

  381. the Jews

  382. would talk about

  383. getting ready

  384. for the weekly

  385. Sabbath.

  386. And this

  387. was a preparation

  388. day

  389. for an unusually

  390. special

  391. and significant

  392. Sabbath

  393. because the

  394. great feast

  395. of the Passover

  396. was being celebrated.

  397. And the Passover

  398. coincided

  399. with

  400. the Sabbath.

  401. So

  402. everything

  403. had to be done

  404. and done well

  405. and done properly

  406. and there were

  407. certain things

  408. that you couldn't

  409. leave undone.

  410. So the preparation

  411. day was very

  412. busy for a lot

  413. of people

  414. in Jerusalem.

  415. It was also

  416. the day

  417. Jesus was nailed

  418. to the tree.

  419. The day

  420. he said

  421. I thirst.

  422. The day

  423. he said

  424. it is

  425. finished.

  426. And

  427. he died

  428. for sinners.

  429. It's the day

  430. he was taken

  431. down

  432. from the cross

  433. and buried.

  434. and then

  435. the sun

  436. set

  437. and the

  438. Sabbath

  439. began

  440. that Friday

  441. night.

  442. And the

  443. Sabbath

  444. went through

  445. Friday night

  446. through the

  447. whole night

  448. through Saturday

  449. morning

  450. through the

  451. whole of the

  452. daylight hours

  453. of Saturday

  454. and Sabbath

  455. didn't end

  456. until the

  457. sun set

  458. on Saturday.

  459. and then

  460. the woman

  461. got their

  462. spices

  463. together

  464. so that

  465. early in the

  466. morning when

  467. it was safe

  468. and it was

  469. light

  470. as soon as

  471. they could

  472. they could

  473. visit

  474. their Lord's

  475. grave

  476. and say

  477. goodbye.

  478. that's

  479. where we

  480. are.

  481. What a

  482. long

  483. slow

  484. slow

  485. Sabbath

  486. that must

  487. have been.

  488. What did

  489. they talk

  490. about?

  491. The

  492. friends of

  493. Jesus.

  494. How did

  495. they feel?

  496. They were

  497. in shock.

  498. They were

  499. sad.

  500. They were

  501. confused.

  502. I would

  503. like us

  504. to see

  505. two things

  506. in this

  507. story

  508. tonight.

  509. And the

  510. first is

  511. to see

  512. a dead

  513. body

  514. two

  515. friends

  516. and a

  517. garden

  518. tomb.

  519. That's the

  520. first thing

  521. that the

  522. text draws

  523. our eye

  524. to.

  525. Joseph

  526. of Arimathea

  527. who has

  528. not been

  529. mentioned

  530. before.

  531. He's

  532. new.

  533. And another

  534. character

  535. Nicodemus

  536. who has

  537. been

  538. mentioned

  539. before

  540. back in

  541. chapter 3

  542. of this

  543. gospel.

  544. And what

  545. these two

  546. men have

  547. in common

  548. is that

  549. they are

  550. senior

  551. members

  552. of the

  553. Jewish

  554. people,

  555. of the

  556. council

  557. of the

  558. 71 elders,

  559. the Sanhedrin.

  560. They are

  561. respectable

  562. and respected

  563. men.

  564. Nicodemus

  565. came to

  566. Jesus by

  567. night to

  568. talk to

  569. him about

  570. spiritual

  571. things.

  572. He was

  573. lost.

  574. He was

  575. spiritually

  576. in the

  577. dark.

  578. He probably

  579. didn't

  580. know it.

  581. And Jesus

  582. says to

  583. him in

  584. chapter 3,

  585. you must

  586. be born

  587. again.

  588. You must

  589. have new

  590. life from

  591. God.

  592. If you

  593. are to

  594. be in

  595. the

  596. kingdom

  597. of God

  598. and have

  599. eternal

  600. life,

  601. you must

  602. start afresh

  603. in a way

  604. that only

  605. God can

  606. achieve.

  607. life.

  608. It

  609. seems

  610. Nicodemus

  611. has become

  612. a follower

  613. of Jesus

  614. but

  615. secretly.

  616. And it

  617. seems that

  618. this other

  619. wealthy man,

  620. Joseph from

  621. Arimathea,

  622. who has the

  623. money to

  624. provide a

  625. tomb at

  626. short notice

  627. for Jesus,

  628. he must have

  629. become a

  630. secret follower,

  631. a secret

  632. disciple of

  633. Jesus as

  634. well.

  635. So here's

  636. comfort.

  637. There's no

  638. doubt Jesus

  639. is dead.

  640. There is a

  641. body.

  642. But at

  643. least he has

  644. some friends

  645. and two of

  646. them are

  647. named in

  648. the text.

  649. And they

  650. go and ask

  651. the Roman

  652. governor,

  653. Pilate,

  654. for his

  655. body.

  656. It's at

  657. that point

  658. Pilate is

  659. quite surprised

  660. actually that

  661. Jesus has

  662. died already

  663. and suddenly

  664. there is an

  665. urgency for

  666. the bodies

  667. to be removed

  668. from the

  669. crosses near

  670. Jerusalem

  671. because it

  672. is a high

  673. Sabbath,

  674. it is the

  675. Passover,

  676. and it

  677. says in

  678. the law of

  679. the Lord

  680. that the

  681. land is

  682. defiled

  683. if a

  684. body is

  685. left

  686. hanging

  687. on a

  688. tree

  689. through the

  690. night.

  691. Let me

  692. read to

  693. you God's

  694. word.

  695. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 21:22

  696. 21 verse

  697. 22 says,

  698. if a man

  699. has committed

  700. a crime

  701. punishable

  702. by death

  703. and he

  704. is put

  705. to death

  706. and you

  707. hang him

  708. on a

  709. tree,

  710. his body

  711. shall not

  712. remain all

  713. night on

  714. the tree,

  715. but you

  716. shall bury

  717. him the

  718. same day,

  719. for a

  720. hanged

  721. man is

  722. cursed

  723. by

  724. God.

  725. You

  726. shall not

  727. defile your

  728. land that

  729. the Lord

  730. your God

  731. is giving

  732. you for

  733. an

  734. inheritance.

  735. That was

  736. God's law

  737. and it

  738. was going

  739. to be

  740. followed.

  741. The land

  742. could not

  743. afford to

  744. be polluted,

  745. the high

  746. Sabbath could

  747. not afford

  748. to be

  749. polluted,

  750. and the

  751. man who

  752. was under

  753. the curse

  754. of God,

  755. Jesus

  756. from

  757. Nazareth,

  758. he must

  759. be cut

  760. down from

  761. his cross.

  762. Now he

  763. was already

  764. dead,

  765. and that

  766. meant they

  767. didn't break

  768. his legs,

  769. they didn't

  770. break a

  771. bone of

  772. his body,

  773. he was

  774. the perfect

  775. blemish-free

  776. Passover

  777. sacrifice

  778. that God

  779. had planned

  780. for over

  781. a thousand

  782. years.

  783. Romans

  784. were not

  785. squeamish

  786. about executing

  787. their enemies,

  788. they were

  789. pretty brutal

  790. horrible,

  791. cruel people.

  792. If they

  793. were left

  794. to their

  795. own devices,

  796. they would

  797. happily leave

  798. the bodies

  799. of condemned

  800. criminals

  801. to die

  802. slowly for

  803. days,

  804. and then

  805. to rot

  806. until the

  807. birds were

  808. finished with

  809. them.

  810. But the

  811. Jews,

  812. especially

  813. near their

  814. temple and

  815. their holy

  816. city,

  817. insisted

  818. it.

  819. The bodies

  820. must come

  821. down.

  822. This is the

  823. day of

  824. preparation.

  825. They must

  826. be taken

  827. and buried.

  828. And what

  829. would normally

  830. happen is

  831. that an

  832. executed

  833. criminal was

  834. too contaminated,

  835. too dirty,

  836. too unholy to

  837. go into a

  838. decent grave

  839. with decent

  840. people.

  841. people.

  842. And so,

  843. the plan

  844. was to

  845. dispose of

  846. these bodies,

  847. probably in a

  848. common grave

  849. for convicted

  850. felons,

  851. definitely outside

  852. the city,

  853. out of sight,

  854. out of mind,

  855. take out the

  856. trash.

  857. Well,

  858. the dead

  859. body of

  860. Jesus had

  861. friends,

  862. and they

  863. begged the

  864. governor for

  865. his body.

  866. No, they

  867. weren't going

  868. to defile

  869. anybody else's

  870. remains buried

  871. somewhere by

  872. putting him

  873. into a tomb

  874. that had

  875. already been

  876. used.

  877. He was going

  878. to be put

  879. into a new

  880. grave.

  881. And remarkably,

  882. almost as if

  883. it was

  884. planned,

  885. there are

  886. friends,

  887. and near

  888. the cross

  889. there is a

  890. garden,

  891. and in the

  892. garden there

  893. is a new

  894. tomb where

  895. no body

  896. has ever

  897. been laid.

  898. And the

  899. governor

  900. says,

  901. yes,

  902. you can have

  903. his body.

  904. This is

  905. state property,

  906. but if you

  907. want it,

  908. you can

  909. have it.

  910. Do with

  911. it what

  912. you want.

  913. And these

  914. two secret

  915. disciples are

  916. not secret

  917. disciples anymore.

  918. They are on

  919. the side of

  920. their master,

  921. even though

  922. he's dead.

  923. And they

  924. have procured,

  925. or they

  926. already had,

  927. this grave

  928. in a

  929. garden near

  930. the cross.

  931. And so,

  932. with love,

  933. and with as

  934. much care as

  935. they can

  936. manage,

  937. and with

  938. their spices,

  939. and with

  940. their linen

  941. cloths,

  942. they give us

  943. decent a

  944. burial as

  945. they can

  946. to Jesus.

  947. In the

  948. Apostles'

  949. Creed,

  950. which probably

  951. dates back

  952. to probably

  953. the second

  954. century in

  955. one form

  956. or another,

  957. a very

  958. ancient form

  959. of words

  960. of Christian

  961. belief,

  962. it highlights

  963. not just

  964. that Jesus

  965. was God

  966. and man,

  967. and that

  968. he died,

  969. and that

  970. he was

  971. raised.

  972. The fact

  973. that Jesus

  974. had a body

  975. that needed

  976. to be

  977. buried

  978. is in

  979. the Creed.

  980. you maybe

  981. know the

  982. words.

  983. I believe

  984. in Jesus

  985. Christ,

  986. his only

  987. son,

  988. our Lord,

  989. who was

  990. conceived

  991. by the

  992. Holy Spirit,

  993. born of

  994. the Virgin

  995. Mary,

  996. suffered

  997. under

  998. Pontius

  999. Pilate,

  1000. was

  1001. crucified,

  1002. died,

  1003. and was

  1004. buried.

  1005. He

  1006. descended

  1007. to the

  1008. dead,

  1009. and so

  1010. on.

  1011. and so

  1012. on.

  1013. There was

  1014. a day

  1015. in Scotland

  1016. when if

  1017. you wanted

  1018. to be

  1019. baptized,

  1020. or if

  1021. you wanted

  1022. to baptize

  1023. your children,

  1024. the minister

  1025. would say

  1026. to you,

  1027. do you

  1028. understand

  1029. the Christian

  1030. faith?

  1031. And if

  1032. you knew

  1033. the truths

  1034. of the

  1035. Apostles'

  1036. Creed,

  1037. you had

  1038. demonstrated

  1039. that you

  1040. understood

  1041. the basics

  1042. of the

  1043. Christian

  1044. faith.

  1045. And if

  1046. you were

  1047. making a

  1048. profession

  1049. of faith,

  1050. there was

  1051. content to

  1052. it,

  1053. there was

  1054. truth to

  1055. it.

  1056. Can you

  1057. say the

  1058. belief?

  1059. Part of

  1060. what the

  1061. church has

  1062. believed

  1063. for centuries

  1064. is that

  1065. Jesus died,

  1066. was

  1067. buried.

  1068. He was

  1069. in the

  1070. same place

  1071. of death

  1072. and weakness

  1073. as everyone

  1074. else who

  1075. has ever

  1076. died.

  1077. died.

  1078. That's

  1079. part of

  1080. our faith.

  1081. Is it

  1082. gospel?

  1083. Is it

  1084. good news?

  1085. I think

  1086. it is.

  1087. And I

  1088. think it

  1089. should be

  1090. comforting

  1091. and helpful

  1092. to you

  1093. and me

  1094. and to

  1095. the people

  1096. we share

  1097. our hope

  1098. with.

  1099. Because no

  1100. other religion,

  1101. no other

  1102. philosophy

  1103. says we

  1104. follow someone

  1105. who has

  1106. tasted

  1107. death and

  1108. whose body

  1109. has been

  1110. cold in

  1111. the grave

  1112. and he

  1113. has an

  1114. answer

  1115. for death.

  1116. He has

  1117. defeated

  1118. tears

  1119. and sorrow.

  1120. When John

  1121. writes his

  1122. gospel,

  1123. it is

  1124. always so

  1125. that people

  1126. would believe.

  1127. That's the

  1128. purpose for

  1129. it all.

  1130. And he

  1131. gives you

  1132. facts

  1133. so that

  1134. you will

  1135. believe

  1136. that Jesus

  1137. is good

  1138. news

  1139. for a

  1140. dying

  1141. world.

  1142. Fact

  1143. number

  1144. one

  1145. that we

  1146. can

  1147. believe.

  1148. Your

  1149. Lord

  1150. had a

  1151. funeral.

  1152. He

  1153. tasted

  1154. death.

  1155. And if

  1156. you think

  1157. you'll ever

  1158. go to

  1159. another

  1160. funeral,

  1161. you need

  1162. a Lord

  1163. who

  1164. understands

  1165. funerals.

  1166. And if

  1167. you think

  1168. that one

  1169. day you

  1170. will have

  1171. a funeral

  1172. for yourself,

  1173. then you

  1174. need a

  1175. Lord who

  1176. knows the

  1177. last enemy

  1178. and who

  1179. is greater

  1180. and stronger

  1181. than death,

  1182. the last

  1183. enemy.

  1184. Part of

  1185. the gospel,

  1186. part of

  1187. the good

  1188. news is

  1189. that our

  1190. Lord Jesus

  1191. had a

  1192. funeral.

  1193. Fact

  1194. number

  1195. two,

  1196. your

  1197. Lord's

  1198. grave

  1199. was

  1200. pristine,

  1201. unoccupied,

  1202. on Friday

  1203. morning,

  1204. unused,

  1205. and it

  1206. was unoccupied

  1207. again on

  1208. Sunday

  1209. morning.

  1210. The Lord

  1211. only needed

  1212. his tomb

  1213. for a

  1214. little part

  1215. of three

  1216. days,

  1217. a little

  1218. part of

  1219. Friday,

  1220. and then

  1221. the Saturday

  1222. Sabbath

  1223. into

  1224. Sunday

  1225. morning.

  1226. that's

  1227. all.

  1228. He'll

  1229. never need

  1230. it again.

  1231. He'll

  1232. never be

  1233. buried

  1234. again.

  1235. Death

  1236. cannot

  1237. challenge

  1238. him or

  1239. humiliate

  1240. him,

  1241. and nothing

  1242. can.

  1243. We get

  1244. weak,

  1245. we get

  1246. sick,

  1247. not him.

  1248. His

  1249. grave was

  1250. unoccupied

  1251. when he went

  1252. into it.

  1253. he was

  1254. not a

  1255. dead

  1256. body,

  1257. lost

  1258. among a

  1259. heap of

  1260. dead

  1261. bodies,

  1262. misfiled

  1263. and forgotten

  1264. in Jerusalem.

  1265. He died,

  1266. and on

  1267. the third

  1268. day he

  1269. was raised,

  1270. and many

  1271. saw him.

  1272. That is

  1273. fact.

  1274. Number

  1275. two,

  1276. your Lord

  1277. had a

  1278. funeral,

  1279. your Lord's

  1280. grave was

  1281. unoccupied

  1282. on Friday

  1283. morning,

  1284. and unoccupied

  1285. again on

  1286. Sunday

  1287. morning.

  1288. Fact

  1289. number

  1290. three,

  1291. and this

  1292. is important

  1293. to John,

  1294. your Lord's

  1295. grave was

  1296. located in

  1297. a garden.

  1298. People

  1299. sometimes call

  1300. the gospel

  1301. of John

  1302. the gospel

  1303. of the

  1304. signs.

  1305. There are

  1306. many signs.

  1307. At the

  1308. end of

  1309. the gospel,

  1310. the writer

  1311. says that

  1312. Jesus did

  1313. many other

  1314. things that

  1315. are not

  1316. written in

  1317. this book.

  1318. These are

  1319. written that

  1320. you might

  1321. believe,

  1322. and he

  1323. specifically

  1324. mentions the

  1325. signs.

  1326. Jesus did

  1327. many signs.

  1328. He did

  1329. many things,

  1330. but what's

  1331. recorded is

  1332. recorded to

  1333. invite us

  1334. and to

  1335. compel us

  1336. to believe

  1337. and trust

  1338. in Jesus.

  1339. Jesus.

  1340. So why

  1341. does it

  1342. matter

  1343. that John

  1344. tells us

  1345. near the

  1346. cross was

  1347. a garden

  1348. and in

  1349. the garden

  1350. was a

  1351. tomb?

  1352. No

  1353. sign

  1354. in this

  1355. gospel

  1356. is without

  1357. significance.

  1358. the signs

  1359. all point

  1360. to

  1361. something.

  1362. What does

  1363. the garden

  1364. tomb

  1365. point to?

  1366. Well, I

  1367. think that's

  1368. something we

  1369. can try and

  1370. unpack tonight,

  1371. but it's

  1372. important.

  1373. The garden

  1374. is mentioned

  1375. twice in

  1376. verse 41.

  1377. There was a

  1378. garden, and

  1379. in the garden

  1380. a new tomb.

  1381. And in

  1382. chapter 20

  1383. at verse 15,

  1384. when Mary

  1385. of Magdala

  1386. is upset

  1387. because the

  1388. grave is

  1389. empty, and

  1390. she doesn't

  1391. know what's

  1392. happened to

  1393. the body

  1394. of her

  1395. Lord, she

  1396. sees a

  1397. man, it

  1398. is Jesus,

  1399. raised from

  1400. the dead, but

  1401. she doesn't

  1402. immediately

  1403. recognize him,

  1404. and the

  1405. text says

  1406. she supposed

  1407. he was

  1408. the gardener,

  1409. because gardens

  1410. have gardeners.

  1411. well, it

  1412. turns out,

  1413. although she

  1414. didn't recognize

  1415. Jesus fully,

  1416. she was

  1417. bang on,

  1418. she was

  1419. correct.

  1420. He was

  1421. the gardener

  1422. in his

  1423. guard.

  1424. I hope I

  1425. can explain

  1426. that in a

  1427. way that

  1428. will make

  1429. sense.

  1430. Well, our

  1431. first thought

  1432. tonight has

  1433. been to

  1434. just look at

  1435. the end of

  1436. chapter 19,

  1437. a dead

  1438. body,

  1439. true

  1440. friends,

  1441. and a

  1442. garden

  1443. tomb.

  1444. Now, thinking

  1445. about that

  1446. gardener and

  1447. his resurrection,

  1448. my second

  1449. thought for

  1450. you tonight

  1451. is this.

  1452. Secondly, we

  1453. have no

  1454. dead body,

  1455. just a

  1456. gardener,

  1457. no dead

  1458. body anymore.

  1459. more.

  1460. He's not

  1461. dead,

  1462. but alive.

  1463. The secret

  1464. disciples,

  1465. Joseph of

  1466. Arimathea,

  1467. Nicodemus,

  1468. they love

  1469. Jesus,

  1470. but their

  1471. faith is not

  1472. fully formed.

  1473. they want

  1474. to follow

  1475. Jesus.

  1476. They'll no

  1477. doubt pay

  1478. a high

  1479. price for

  1480. asking for

  1481. his body

  1482. and giving

  1483. him this

  1484. honorable

  1485. burial,

  1486. when many

  1487. in Jerusalem

  1488. just want

  1489. to dishonor

  1490. Jesus and

  1491. forget him,

  1492. but they

  1493. don't yet

  1494. believe he

  1495. is risen

  1496. from the

  1497. dead.

  1498. They're

  1499. procuring a

  1500. grave for

  1501. Jesus.

  1502. They're

  1503. preparing a

  1504. body that

  1505. is going

  1506. to decay.

  1507. They need

  1508. more good

  1509. news,

  1510. more growth,

  1511. more maturity.

  1512. They need

  1513. someone to

  1514. disciple them

  1515. with the

  1516. Easter gospel.

  1517. They'll get

  1518. that.

  1519. The most

  1520. loyal friends

  1521. of Jesus

  1522. include

  1523. many women

  1524. who followed

  1525. him.

  1526. and it's

  1527. not a

  1528. surprise

  1529. that one

  1530. of them

  1531. is first

  1532. to the

  1533. tomb.

  1534. When the

  1535. Jewish

  1536. Sabbath is

  1537. over,

  1538. now on

  1539. the first

  1540. day of

  1541. the week,

  1542. what we

  1543. call Sunday,

  1544. what becomes

  1545. our Lord's

  1546. Day,

  1547. becomes our

  1548. Christian

  1549. Sabbath,

  1550. on the

  1551. first day

  1552. of the

  1553. week,

  1554. Mary Magdalene

  1555. came to

  1556. the tomb

  1557. early,

  1558. while it

  1559. was still

  1560. dark.

  1561. God.

  1562. I don't

  1563. know this

  1564. for certain,

  1565. but looking

  1566. at the

  1567. other

  1568. gospels

  1569. and comparing

  1570. them all,

  1571. the impression

  1572. I get is

  1573. that there

  1574. were a

  1575. group of

  1576. women,

  1577. female

  1578. disciples of

  1579. Jesus,

  1580. who were

  1581. ready to

  1582. wash his

  1583. body,

  1584. anoint his

  1585. body,

  1586. and do

  1587. maybe a

  1588. better job

  1589. than Joseph

  1590. and Nicodemus

  1591. would have

  1592. done,

  1593. as the

  1594. Friday sun

  1595. was setting.

  1596. And you

  1597. would expect

  1598. them to go

  1599. together to

  1600. the tomb,

  1601. but somehow

  1602. Mary from

  1603. Magdala is

  1604. detached from

  1605. the other

  1606. woman,

  1607. and she

  1608. gets there

  1609. first,

  1610. and it's

  1611. still dark.

  1612. It's early,

  1613. early,

  1614. early on

  1615. Sunday morning,

  1616. and in

  1617. John's

  1618. Gospel,

  1619. when people

  1620. come and

  1621. go in

  1622. the dark,

  1623. we are

  1624. supposed,

  1625. I think,

  1626. to understand

  1627. that spiritually

  1628. they're in

  1629. the dark.

  1630. Nicodemus

  1631. came in

  1632. chapter 3

  1633. at night.

  1634. People go

  1635. out into

  1636. the night

  1637. in this

  1638. Gospel

  1639. when they're

  1640. confused.

  1641. It's still

  1642. dark,

  1643. and there's

  1644. no Jesus,

  1645. and the

  1646. grave has

  1647. been disturbed,

  1648. the stone

  1649. is rolled

  1650. away.

  1651. Where's

  1652. his body?

  1653. She's not

  1654. seeing clearly

  1655. yet.

  1656. Now that's

  1657. good news

  1658. for you and

  1659. me,

  1660. because we

  1661. don't always

  1662. understand

  1663. everything right

  1664. away,

  1665. and we don't

  1666. always understand

  1667. everything in

  1668. our teens or

  1669. in our

  1670. twenties.

  1671. Sometimes

  1672. faith is

  1673. a slow

  1674. growing thing,

  1675. and sometimes

  1676. there are

  1677. seasons

  1678. where

  1679. our fears

  1680. and our

  1681. doubts

  1682. and the

  1683. busyness of

  1684. life,

  1685. they're like

  1686. a cloud

  1687. that comes

  1688. between us

  1689. and the

  1690. sun.

  1691. if you

  1692. have lost

  1693. touch

  1694. with the

  1695. fear of

  1696. the Lord

  1697. that is the

  1698. beginning of

  1699. knowledge and

  1700. wisdom,

  1701. that cloud

  1702. needs to be

  1703. blown away,

  1704. and it is

  1705. the truth

  1706. of the

  1707. death and

  1708. resurrection

  1709. and the

  1710. grace and

  1711. mercy and

  1712. love of God

  1713. in Christ

  1714. that will

  1715. be that

  1716. strong wind

  1717. that will

  1718. clear those

  1719. clouds of

  1720. confusion

  1721. away.

  1722. Later,

  1723. Mary of

  1724. Magdala

  1725. would be

  1726. joined by

  1727. Joanna,

  1728. wife of

  1729. Chusa,

  1730. and Salome,

  1731. mother of

  1732. James and

  1733. John,

  1734. and Mary,

  1735. mother of

  1736. James and

  1737. Joseph,

  1738. and some

  1739. other woman.

  1740. What a group

  1741. of remarkable

  1742. godly women

  1743. they were,

  1744. but they

  1745. are not

  1746. yet maybe

  1747. fully formed

  1748. in their

  1749. faith.

  1750. They need

  1751. the good

  1752. news

  1753. of the

  1754. gardener.

  1755. They need

  1756. to meet

  1757. the one

  1758. who calls

  1759. himself in

  1760. this gospel

  1761. in another

  1762. place,

  1763. the resurrection

  1764. and the

  1765. life.

  1766. He's already

  1767. told them

  1768. again and

  1769. again,

  1770. that he's

  1771. going to

  1772. die and

  1773. on the

  1774. third day

  1775. he's going

  1776. to be

  1777. raised.

  1778. And it

  1779. doesn't

  1780. seem to

  1781. have been

  1782. understood

  1783. or accepted

  1784. or penetrate

  1785. or to

  1786. believe.

  1787. It's

  1788. afterwards

  1789. that this

  1790. light begins

  1791. to dawn.

  1792. No,

  1793. there is no

  1794. dead body

  1795. in the tomb.

  1796. There is no

  1797. dead Jesus

  1798. in Jerusalem.

  1799. There's just

  1800. weeping,

  1801. confused

  1802. disciples.

  1803. Mary runs

  1804. to find

  1805. Peter

  1806. and John

  1807. whom Jesus

  1808. loved

  1809. and they

  1810. run

  1811. and they

  1812. run

  1813. and they

  1814. run to

  1815. the tomb

  1816. and Simon

  1817. Peter

  1818. can't run

  1819. quite as

  1820. fast

  1821. as John

  1822. but John

  1823. hesitates

  1824. at the

  1825. tomb.

  1826. Both of

  1827. them were

  1828. running

  1829. together.

  1830. The other

  1831. disciple

  1832. outran

  1833. Peter.

  1834. Peter

  1835. got there

  1836. first.

  1837. John

  1838. waits.

  1839. John

  1840. got there

  1841. first.

  1842. Peter

  1843. is the

  1844. first to

  1845. go in

  1846. so and

  1847. to look.

  1848. But John

  1849. outruns

  1850. Peter

  1851. in

  1852. dawning

  1853. faith,

  1854. dawning

  1855. realization.

  1856. yes,

  1857. my Lord

  1858. is not

  1859. dead.

  1860. He's not

  1861. here.

  1862. But they

  1863. still need

  1864. to grow.

  1865. They still

  1866. need further

  1867. understanding.

  1868. Verse 9

  1869. tells us

  1870. as yet

  1871. they did

  1872. not

  1873. understand

  1874. the

  1875. scripture

  1876. that he

  1877. must rise

  1878. from the

  1879. dead.

  1880. What did

  1881. they think?

  1882. Did they

  1883. think God

  1884. had maybe

  1885. taken his

  1886. body

  1887. a bit

  1888. like he

  1889. took

  1890. Elijah

  1891. to glory

  1892. that God

  1893. had taken

  1894. his son

  1895. to glory?

  1896. I don't

  1897. know what

  1898. they believed

  1899. but they

  1900. weren't

  1901. fully on

  1902. the page

  1903. yet

  1904. with a

  1905. mature

  1906. understanding

  1907. to take

  1908. the Apostles

  1909. Creed

  1910. the woman

  1911. and the

  1912. male

  1913. disciples.

  1914. I don't

  1915. think they

  1916. could say

  1917. the belief

  1918. quite

  1919. yet.

  1920. I don't

  1921. think they

  1922. could quite

  1923. say I

  1924. believe in

  1925. God the

  1926. Father

  1927. Almighty

  1928. and I

  1929. believe in

  1930. Jesus

  1931. Christ the

  1932. Son

  1933. and I

  1934. believe in

  1935. his death

  1936. and I

  1937. believe in

  1938. his burial

  1939. and I

  1940. believe in

  1941. his resurrection

  1942. and I

  1943. believe in

  1944. his church

  1945. his Holy

  1946. Spirit

  1947. his second

  1948. coming.

  1949. They're

  1950. moving towards

  1951. it but I

  1952. don't think

  1953. they're quite

  1954. there yet.

  1955. so what

  1956. will get

  1957. them

  1958. where they

  1959. need to

  1960. be?

  1961. The

  1962. gardener

  1963. standing

  1964. in his

  1965. garden.

  1966. Sometimes

  1967. there is

  1968. a theme

  1969. that runs

  1970. through the

  1971. Bible

  1972. and it

  1973. pops up

  1974. in a few

  1975. places and

  1976. it is

  1977. helpful to

  1978. make a

  1979. connection.

  1980. And I

  1981. think this

  1982. is one of

  1983. those places

  1984. where we

  1985. have the

  1986. text of

  1987. scripture

  1988. repeatedly

  1989. drawing our

  1990. eye to the

  1991. fact that

  1992. the place

  1993. where Jesus

  1994. was buried

  1995. was in

  1996. a garden

  1997. and that

  1998. one of

  1999. those women

  2000. who loved

  2001. him and

  2002. followed him

  2003. thought he

  2004. was the

  2005. gardener.

  2006. She knew

  2007. him as

  2008. her Lord

  2009. when he

  2010. spoke her

  2011. name

  2012. Mary

  2013. and she

  2014. calls him

  2015. her

  2016. rabbi,

  2017. her

  2018. master.

  2019. It's

  2020. very

  2021. lovely

  2022. but use

  2023. your imagination,

  2024. use your

  2025. knowledge of

  2026. the scripture.

  2027. where does

  2028. the scripture

  2029. tell us

  2030. about

  2031. gardens

  2032. and

  2033. gardeners?

  2034. Well the

  2035. most obvious

  2036. place

  2037. is at the

  2038. beginning of

  2039. the scripture

  2040. in the

  2041. story of

  2042. creation and

  2043. fall

  2044. where the

  2045. first

  2046. Adam

  2047. Adam and

  2048. Eve,

  2049. our parents,

  2050. on behalf of

  2051. the whole

  2052. human race,

  2053. are in

  2054. a garden

  2055. where they

  2056. meet with

  2057. God.

  2058. They are to

  2059. tend that

  2060. garden,

  2061. they are to

  2062. work that

  2063. garden.

  2064. Adam is

  2065. a gardener

  2066. and he is

  2067. on friendly

  2068. terms

  2069. with his

  2070. creator.

  2071. And the

  2072. garden is

  2073. wonderful and

  2074. God makes

  2075. provision and

  2076. the garden is

  2077. spoiled by

  2078. sin and

  2079. corrupted and

  2080. the world is

  2081. corrupted and

  2082. death gets

  2083. in and the

  2084. death penalty

  2085. comes on

  2086. Adam and

  2087. Eve and

  2088. the children

  2089. of Adam

  2090. and Eve

  2091. because in

  2092. that first

  2093. garden,

  2094. the first

  2095. gardener is

  2096. a spiritual

  2097. failure.

  2098. John in

  2099. his gospel

  2100. is showing

  2101. us another

  2102. Adam,

  2103. a second

  2104. and last

  2105. Adam because

  2106. we'll never

  2107. need a third

  2108. Adam because

  2109. the second

  2110. and last

  2111. Adam is

  2112. not going

  2113. to fail

  2114. the spiritual

  2115. tests that

  2116. he undergoes.

  2117. He is going

  2118. to obey

  2119. and drink

  2120. the cup

  2121. the father

  2122. gives to

  2123. him.

  2124. In the

  2125. Genesis

  2126. garden and

  2127. gardener

  2128. there is

  2129. the tragedy

  2130. of sin

  2131. and death.

  2132. Where are

  2133. the other

  2134. gardens in

  2135. the Bible?

  2136. Well how

  2137. about the

  2138. garden of

  2139. Gethsemane

  2140. where Jesus

  2141. was arrested

  2142. and where

  2143. Jesus wept

  2144. and sweat

  2145. so much

  2146. that he

  2147. sweat blood.

  2148. The

  2149. gospels are

  2150. very interested

  2151. in that

  2152. garden.

  2153. And the

  2154. gardener in

  2155. that garden

  2156. of tears

  2157. is sowing

  2158. prayers

  2159. and sowing

  2160. in his

  2161. agony

  2162. the

  2163. determination

  2164. not to

  2165. do his

  2166. own will

  2167. but the

  2168. father's

  2169. will so

  2170. that the

  2171. church would

  2172. be saved

  2173. and the

  2174. failure of

  2175. the first

  2176. Adam would

  2177. be undone.

  2178. and now

  2179. this garden

  2180. a garden

  2181. with a

  2182. tomb in

  2183. it

  2184. and a

  2185. man

  2186. maybe

  2187. supposes

  2188. to be

  2189. the

  2190. gardener.

  2191. He's in

  2192. a resurrection

  2193. body

  2194. but his

  2195. people are

  2196. still weeping

  2197. he wants

  2198. them

  2199. to have

  2200. joy

  2201. and hope.

  2202. the time

  2203. for tears

  2204. is passing.

  2205. They are

  2206. confused

  2207. and he

  2208. wants to

  2209. instruct

  2210. them

  2211. so that

  2212. their

  2213. confusion

  2214. will be

  2215. replaced

  2216. with

  2217. comfort

  2218. joy

  2219. and

  2220. confidence

  2221. to go

  2222. to the

  2223. ends of

  2224. the earth

  2225. with the

  2226. gospel.

  2227. When

  2228. Mary wants

  2229. to hold

  2230. on to

  2231. Jesus

  2232. physically

  2233. he says

  2234. to her

  2235. in words

  2236. that are

  2237. a little

  2238. puzzling

  2239. you can't

  2240. hang on

  2241. to me

  2242. just now

  2243. I have

  2244. to ascend

  2245. to my

  2246. father

  2247. and to

  2248. your

  2249. father

  2250. because

  2251. Jesus

  2252. the

  2253. gardener

  2254. of the

  2255. resurrection

  2256. is going

  2257. to tend

  2258. his

  2259. church

  2260. his

  2261. vine

  2262. his

  2263. branches

  2264. from

  2265. the

  2266. father's

  2267. right

  2268. hand

  2269. in glory

  2270. I am

  2271. the vine

  2272. you are

  2273. the

  2274. branches

  2275. my

  2276. father

  2277. is the

  2278. gardener

  2279. Jesus

  2280. is a

  2281. gardener

  2282. but so

  2283. is the

  2284. father

  2285. and the

  2286. father

  2287. wants

  2288. Jesus

  2289. at his

  2290. side

  2291. and the

  2292. spirit

  2293. representing

  2294. God

  2295. here on

  2296. the earth

  2297. tending

  2298. the vine

  2299. that is

  2300. growing and

  2301. spreading

  2302. which is

  2303. the life

  2304. giving

  2305. church

  2306. the fruit

  2307. bearing

  2308. church

  2309. are you

  2310. part of

  2311. it

  2312. and do

  2313. you want

  2314. to be

  2315. part of

  2316. it

  2317. there is

  2318. one other

  2319. place in

  2320. the bible

  2321. where you

  2322. find a

  2323. gardener

  2324. and a

  2325. gardener

  2326. and that

  2327. is surely

  2328. in the last

  2329. two chapters

  2330. of the bible

  2331. where the

  2332. imagery and

  2333. the language

  2334. echoes

  2335. the story

  2336. of eden

  2337. and creation

  2338. and there

  2339. is no

  2340. more death

  2341. and satan

  2342. is defeated

  2343. and he is

  2344. no more

  2345. and where

  2346. there is

  2347. no more

  2348. sighing

  2349. and sorrow

  2350. where there

  2351. is a

  2352. garden

  2353. city

  2354. with a

  2355. tree of

  2356. life

  2357. growing in

  2358. it

  2359. and with

  2360. all manner

  2361. of trees

  2362. with fruit

  2363. for the

  2364. healing

  2365. of the

  2366. nations

  2367. with the

  2368. precious

  2369. things

  2370. that were

  2371. in eden

  2372. the precious

  2373. metals

  2374. and precious

  2375. stones

  2376. and the

  2377. precious

  2378. people

  2379. of God

  2380. not needing

  2381. a temple

  2382. because the

  2383. Lord God

  2384. and the

  2385. Lamb are

  2386. there

  2387. they are

  2388. the gardener

  2389. in the

  2390. garden city

  2391. New Jerusalem

  2392. banqueting

  2393. feasting

  2394. in the

  2395. presence

  2396. of God

  2397. serving

  2398. achieving

  2399. working

  2400. in the

  2401. presence

  2402. of God

  2403. God

  2404. who did

  2405. Mary see

  2406. she saw

  2407. her Lord

  2408. her

  2409. gardener

  2410. her hope

  2411. for you

  2412. and for

  2413. me

  2414. we have

  2415. not a

  2416. dead

  2417. saviour

  2418. not a

  2419. dead

  2420. memory

  2421. but a

  2422. gardener

  2423. who has

  2424. been dead

  2425. but who

  2426. now tends

  2427. his church

  2428. and wishes

  2429. it to be

  2430. fruitful

  2431. in John

  2432. 12 24

  2433. Jesus

  2434. says

  2435. truly truly

  2436. I say

  2437. to you

  2438. unless a

  2439. grain of

  2440. wheat

  2441. falls into

  2442. the earth

  2443. and dies

  2444. it remains

  2445. alone

  2446. he's talking

  2447. about himself

  2448. on his

  2449. cross

  2450. but if it

  2451. dies

  2452. it bears

  2453. much

  2454. fruit

  2455. well I'm

  2456. finished

  2457. and our

  2458. communion

  2459. again

  2460. is finished

  2461. one

  2462. question

  2463. do you

  2464. have

  2465. hope

  2466. do you

  2467. have hope

  2468. in your

  2469. life

  2470. is the

  2471. future

  2472. and is

  2473. your

  2474. eternity

  2475. good

  2476. I'm a

  2477. chaplain

  2478. in a

  2479. high school

  2480. in Inverness

  2481. and we

  2482. don't get

  2483. many

  2484. opportunities

  2485. to share

  2486. very much

  2487. of God's

  2488. truth

  2489. there

  2490. it's quite

  2491. limited

  2492. but some

  2493. of the

  2494. chaplains

  2495. go in

  2496. every week

  2497. on a

  2498. Thursday

  2499. at the

  2500. lunch hour

  2501. and put

  2502. on a

  2503. hot chocolate

  2504. club

  2505. and at

  2506. least we

  2507. can chat

  2508. and if

  2509. people are

  2510. there and

  2511. if they

  2512. want to

  2513. talk

  2514. then we

  2515. can talk

  2516. and on

  2517. Thursday

  2518. just passed

  2519. a couple

  2520. of days

  2521. ago

  2522. three of

  2523. us

  2524. three of

  2525. the

  2526. chaplains

  2527. were in

  2528. lots of

  2529. hot chocolate

  2530. was consumed

  2531. and everyone

  2532. was invited

  2533. to answer

  2534. a question

  2535. where do you

  2536. find hope

  2537. one person

  2538. said in

  2539. music

  2540. I quite

  2541. like that

  2542. answer

  2543. if you

  2544. listen to

  2545. good music

  2546. maybe it

  2547. will give

  2548. you hope

  2549. a few

  2550. people said

  2551. in my

  2552. family

  2553. and my

  2554. friends

  2555. they give

  2556. me hope

  2557. one

  2558. honest

  2559. person

  2560. said

  2561. what most

  2562. people in

  2563. this

  2564. generation

  2565. seem to

  2566. believe

  2567. I find

  2568. hope

  2569. in

  2570. myself

  2571. but it's

  2572. a bad

  2573. answer

  2574. because I

  2575. will let

  2576. you down

  2577. and I

  2578. will let

  2579. myself

  2580. down

  2581. and you

  2582. will let

  2583. yourself

  2584. down

  2585. and this

  2586. generation

  2587. that tells

  2588. us to look

  2589. within for

  2590. our hope

  2591. and our

  2592. answers

  2593. is telling

  2594. us a

  2595. lie

  2596. do you

  2597. know what

  2598. the most

  2599. popular

  2600. answer was

  2601. among the

  2602. pupils of

  2603. Milburn

  2604. Academy

  2605. who came

  2606. on Thursday

  2607. where they

  2608. find hope

  2609. in a

  2610. pet

  2611. in a

  2612. dog

  2613. I've

  2614. got

  2615. nothing

  2616. against

  2617. pets

  2618. nothing

  2619. against

  2620. dogs

  2621. but if

  2622. that's the

  2623. source of

  2624. hope and

  2625. comfort

  2626. it will

  2627. die

  2628. the

  2629. gardener

  2630. will never

  2631. die

  2632. do you

  2633. have hope

  2634. because you

  2635. know the

  2636. voice of

  2637. Jesus

  2638. and you

  2639. follow his

  2640. voice

  2641. that's

  2642. that's

  2643. the source

  2644. of hope

  2645. that even

  2646. overcomes

  2647. death

  2648. in my

  2649. father's

  2650. house

  2651. are many

  2652. mansions

  2653. if it

  2654. were not

  2655. so

  2656. would I

  2657. not have

  2658. told you

  2659. I go

  2660. to prepare

  2661. a place

  2662. for you

  2663. and if

  2664. I go

  2665. I will

  2666. come

  2667. again

  2668. that you

  2669. may be

  2670. there

  2671. with me

  2672. Lord

  2673. Jesus

  2674. you are

  2675. the one

  2676. who went

  2677. to the

  2678. garden

  2679. tomb for

  2680. us

  2681. and stood

  2682. in the

  2683. garden

  2684. as the

  2685. resurrection

  2686. tend

  2687. our souls

  2688. and make

  2689. us fruitful

  2690. and give

  2691. us faith

  2692. give us

  2693. joy

  2694. love

  2695. give us

  2696. salvation

  2697. give us

  2698. hope

  2699. for we

  2700. ask it

  2701. in your

  2702. name

  2703. amen

  2704. we're going

  2705. to conclude

  2706. with words

  2707. from a

  2708. resurrection

  2709. psalm

  2710. psalm 16

  2711. in sing

  2728. to Selma

  2729. the land

  2730. allotted

  2731. me

  2732. is in

  2733. a pleasant

  2734. sight

  2735. and surely

  2736. my inheritance

  2737. to me

  2738. is a delight

  2739. we'll stand

  2740. and sing

  2741. I hope you can

  2742. stay for the

  2743. fellowship

  2744. and may the

  2745. Lord bless you

  2746. in the days

  2747. to come

  2748. I praise

  2749. the Lord

  2750. my God

  2751. whose

  2752. whose

  2753. counsel

  2754. guides

  2755. my

  2756. choice

  2757. and

  2758. me

  2759. live

  2760. in the

  2761. night

  2762. my

  2763. heart

  2764. because

  2765. my

  2766. world

2767. The Lord alone, because He is at my right hand, and not He overthrew.

2768. Therefore my heart is glad, my tongue with joy will sing,

2769. my body to the rest of the earth in hope and way of being.

2770. For you will not allow my soul in depth to stay,

2771. nor will He be, dear Holy One, to see that tomb's decay.

2772. It hath been known to me the path of my divine.

  2773. Let us pray.

2774. Remember us with tender love.

2775. Bless those gathering for the fellowship later,

2776. and bless the good things, the food, and so on,

2777. that we share in there and our fellowship in Jesus Christ.

2778. And we commit and commend one another to God's grace and keeping

2779. for this day and for all of our days.

2780. May the grace of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

2781. be with us and with all whom we love evermore.

  2782. Amen.

  2783. Amen.

2784. Do I get out of here?

  2785. Yes, thank you.

  2786. Thank you.

  2787. Thank you so much.

  2788. Thank you.

  2789. Amen.

  2790. Thank you.

  2791. Thank you.

  2792. Thank you.

  2793. Thank you.

  2794. Thank you.

  2795. Thank you.
