  1. We're going to begin our worship now. We're singing firstly today from Psalm 122.

  2. Psalm 122, that is in the Scottish Psalter version on page 416 of Tunis St. Paul.

  3. I joyed when to the house of God go up, they said to me, Jerusalem within thy gates our feet

  4. shall standing be. Words that people of Israel sang long ago when they made their way up to

  5. the temple to worship the Lord and express their joy in going as well as in arriving.

  6. And it's our great privilege as well to come together, together as they did, as we come

  7. together today. Let's express our joy and thankfulness to God with these great words.

  8. Tunis St. Paul, when we stand to sing, I joyed when to the house of God.

  9. I joyed when to the house of God, O what is said to me?

  10. Jerusalem within thy gates, how ye shall stand in thee?

  11. Jerusalem within thy gates, how ye shall stand in thee?

  12. Jerusalem within thy gates, how ye shall stand in thee?

  13. Jerusalem within thy gates, how ye shall stand in thee?

  14. Within thy walls remain

  15. And never may thy promises

  16. Prosperity retain

  17. Thou, for my friends and brethren, say

  18. Peace be heavy and safe

  19. And for the hands of Father Lord

  20. And seek thy good away

  21. Let's now join together in prayer briefly

  22. Praying especially for the children and the young folks at the moment

  23. Lord our God, we give thanks again that we are able to gather as we have been singing

  24. In this place of worship

  25. A place that has been used for so many years

  26. To seek to glorify the Lord and to give thanks for all his goodness

  27. And we pray today, Lord, for our children, young folks

  28. We pray for them whether they be in creche or tweenies or Sunday school or Bible class

  29. We ask your blessing for them all

  30. You know their circumstances

  31. You know their different capacities of age

  32. We commend them to you, O Lord

  33. And we pray for them

  34. For it is the desire of our hearts to see them following in the ways of the Lord

  35. And we pray today that what they receive in teaching

  36. And in ways in which your word is explained to them

  37. We pray that that will continue to be beneficial to them

  38. And a blessing to them

  39. And indeed to their parents and loved ones as well

  40. Bless the teachers, we pray

  41. And the carers and all who look after

  42. Our young folk in creche and tweenies

  43. Who teach in the Sunday school and the Bible class

  44. We thank you for them

  45. And we pray that they may know your blessing

  46. As they seek to impart that teaching to the young folk

  47. And help us to be thankful as a congregation

  48. When we have so many young families

  49. And so many children and young people who belong to us

  50. And Lord, we ask that your blessing will be with us

  51. To provide for us in regard to all of these needs

  52. Hear us now, we pray

  53. And pardon our sin

  54. For Jesus' sake

  55. Amen

  56. Well, today I'm following what the syllabus is for the Sunday school

  57. And the Sunday school syllabus today

  58. At least on the sheet that I've got

  59. Has to do with Saul

  60. King Saul in the Old Testament

  61. Being rejected by God as king

  62. There are two chapters in the Old Testament

  63. In 1 Samuel chapter 13

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  64. And 1 Samuel 15

  65. Where we find God saying that he had rejected Saul

  66. From being king

  67. Now something serious must have really happened

  68. Before God would have rejected him

  69. From being king

  70. Having already had him anointed as king over the people

  71. And that's true

  72. When you read these two passages in 1 Samuel

  73. You'll discover why it was that God rejected him

  74. The first passage really was

  75. God having said through Samuel

  76. To Saul to wait in a certain place for seven days

  77. Until Samuel had come back

  78. And then he would actually go from there

  79. To somewhere else

  80. And Saul waited for the seven days

  81. Samuel hadn't yet appeared

  82. So Saul decided

  83. I'll just do the sacrifice myself

  84. And so that's what he did

  85. And before he was finished

  86. Samuel appeared

  87. And Samuel told him

  88. That he had done wrong

  89. That he was actually disobeying the Lord

  90. And the ways that the Lord

  91. Had set out for his worship

  92. And for sacrifice

  93. He should have waited for Samuel

  94. Even though he thought

  95. Well he's late

  96. So I'll just do it myself

  97. That was the problem with Saul there

  98. That's the problem with Saul also

  99. In 1 Samuel 15

  100. What Saul was really doing

  101. In both cases

  102. Was doing what he thought was best

  103. Instead of following God's direction

  104. He actually decided to do it his way

  105. And to do it in a way that was different

  106. To the way God had specified

  107. And that means

  108. In each of these cases

  109. He was being disobedient to God

  110. And that was really serious

  111. And it's still a serious thing for us as well

  112. Because obedience to God

  113. Is one of the marks

  114. Of a genuine Christian

  115. Obedience to God is important

  116. In the life of a Christian

  117. It doesn't matter what age we're at

  118. Even when we are actually older

  119. We're still, as Christians

  120. Required to obey God

  121. To obey him in everything

  122. That he sets out

  123. We need to do and be for him

  124. So it's an important mark

  125. Of a Christian

  126. To have obedience to God

  127. And when Saul was being disobedient

  128. God saw that as being very serious

  129. Especially for a man

  130. Who had been made king

  131. Over Israel

  132. And also that's why God

  133. Rejected him

  134. And afterwards

  135. David took Saul's place

  136. As king over Israel

  137. So for you as young folk today

  138. It's important for yourselves

  139. That whenever we don't do

  140. What God says we should do

  141. We're being disobedient

  142. And whenever we do

  143. What God said we don't do

  144. That's also being disobedient

  145. And when we're disobedient to God

  146. Well that is something that God

  147. Is not pleased with

  148. God is pleased with

  149. Our obedience to him

  150. And we show our obedience to him

  151. When we accept him

  152. When we love him

  153. When we serve him

  154. When we want him

  155. To be the most important person

  156. In our lives

  157. This is what Jesus said

  158. In John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  159. And verse 36

  160. And I want you to notice

  161. How Jesus combined together

  162. Faith, believing

  163. And also obeying

  164. This is what he said

  165. Whoever believes in the Son

  166. That's Jesus himself

  167. Whoever believes in the Son

  168. Has eternal life

  169. Whoever does not obey the Son

  170. Shall not see life

  171. But the wrath of God

  172. Remains on him

  173. You can see from that

  174. That believing in Jesus

  175. Involves obeying Jesus

  176. And obeying Jesus

  177. Involves believing in Jesus

  178. You can't have the one

  179. Without the other

  180. So today

  181. Our obedience

  182. Is so important

  183. Whatever age we are at

  184. Okay so we'll say

  185. The Lord's Prayer now together

  186. Our Father

  187. Which art in heaven

  188. Hallowed be thy name

  189. Thy kingdom come

  190. Thy will be done

  191. On earth

  192. As it is in heaven

  193. Give us this day

  194. Our daily bread

  195. And forgive us our debts

  196. As we forgive our debtors

  197. And lead us not into temptation

  198. But deliver us from evil

  199. For thine is the kingdom

  200. The power and the glory

  201. Forever

  202. Amen

  203. I'm going to sing again now

  204. To God's praise

  205. In Psalm 119

  206. Psalm 119

  207. Again it's the Scottish Psalter

  208. On page 407

  209. 407

  210. June this time is Wiltshire

  211. Thy word forever is

  212. O Lord

  213. In heaven settled fast

  214. And to all generations

  215. Thy faithfulness

  216. Doth last

  217. All our singings today

  218. Refer to the word of God

  219. Because our sermon's

  220. Going to focus on

  221. Our word

  222. On the word

  223. And our being doers

  224. Of the word

  225. From the epistle of James

  226. Psalm 119

  227. At verse 89

  228. Thy word forever is

  229. O Lord

  230. In heaven settled fast

  231. Fast

  232. Thy word for him

  233. But this O Lord

  234. In heaven settled fast

  235. Unto all generations

  236. Thy faithfulness

  237. Thy faithfulness

  238. The past

  239. The earth of us

  240. Estublish it

  241. And it applies by thee

  242. This day they stand

  243. As the Lord be

  244. For all thy servants be

  245. Unless in thy most perfect law

  246. My soul delights are found

  247. I should not perish

  248. My soul delights are found

  249. My soul delights are found

  250. Thy peace and sight

  251. Will never forget

  252. Everything to be brought

  253. Everything to be brought

  254. Lord I am thine

  255. For save thou me

  256. Thine peace set thine out

  257. Out

  258. For all thy

  259. Thine peace and soul

  260. For all thy wicked

  261. Thine peace and soul

  262. For all thy wicked

  263. Thine peace and soul

  264. Thy dead

  265. Thy dreams

  266. with joy.

  267. I can

  268. know

  269. all

  270. perfection.

  271. Here

  272. have I

  273. see thee

  274. O Lord.

  275. But

  276. else for

  277. I commanded

  278. it

  279. is

  280. exceeding

  281. cross.

  282. Let's turn to read God's word now.

  283. We're reading from the epistle, the letter

  284. of James

  285. and chapter 1 from

  286. the beginning. The letter of James

    James 1 chapter mention

  287. chapter 1

  288. page 1215

  289. or so in your church Bibles if you're

  290. using these.

  291. So James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  292. we'll read from the beginning.

  293. James a servant of God

  294. and of the Lord Jesus Christ

  295. to the twelve tribes of the

  296. dispersion

  297. greetings.

  298. Count it all joy my brothers

  299. when you meet trials of various kinds

  300. for you know that the testing

  301. of your faith produces steadfastness

  302. and let steadfastness

  303. have its full effect

  304. that you may be perfect and complete

  305. lacking in nothing.

  306. if any of you

  307. lacks wisdom

  308. let him ask God

  309. who gives generously to all

  310. without reproach

  311. and it will be given him.

  312. But let him ask in faith

  313. with no doubting

  314. for the one who doubts

  315. is like a wave of the sea

  316. that is driven and tossed

  317. by the wind

  318. for that person

  319. must not suppose

  320. that he will receive anything

  321. from the Lord.

  322. He is a double-minded man

  323. unstable in all his ways.

  324. Let the lowly brother boast

  325. in his exaltation

  326. and the rich in his humiliation

  327. because like a flower of the grass

  328. he will pass away

  329. for the sun rises

  330. with its scorching heat

  331. and withers the grass

  332. its flower falls

  333. and its beauty perishes

  334. so also will the rich man

  335. fade away

  336. in the midst of his pursuits.

  337. Blessed is the man

  338. who remains steadfast

  339. under trial

  340. for when he has stood the test

  341. he will receive

  342. the crown of life

  343. which the Lord has promised

  344. to those who love him.

  345. Let no one say

  346. when he is tempted

  347. I am being tempted by God

  348. for God cannot be tempted

  349. with evil

  350. and he himself

  351. tempts no one.

  352. But each person is tempted

  353. when he is lured

  354. and enticed

  355. by his own desire.

  356. Then desire

  357. when it has conceived

  358. gives birth to sin

  359. and sin

  360. when it is fully grown

  361. brings forth death.

  362. Do not be deceived

  363. my beloved brothers

  364. every good gift

  365. and every perfect gift

  366. is from above

  367. coming down

  368. from the Father of lights

  369. with whom there is no variation

  370. or shadow due to change.

  371. Of his own will

  372. he brought us forth

  373. by the word of truth

  374. that we should be

  375. a kind of first fruits

  376. of his creatures.

  377. Know this

  378. my beloved brothers

  379. let every person

  380. be quick to hear

  381. slow to speak

  382. slow to anger

  383. for the anger of man

  384. does not produce

  385. the righteousness

  386. that God requires.

  387. Therefore put away

  388. all filthiness

  389. and rampant wickedness

  390. and receive with meekness

  391. the implanted word

  392. which is able

  393. to save your souls.

  394. But be doers

  395. of the word

  396. and not hearers only

  397. deceiving yourselves.

  398. For if anyone

  399. is a hearer

  400. of the word

  401. and not a doer

  402. he is like a man

  403. who looks intently

  404. at his natural face

  405. in a mirror

  406. for he looks at himself

  407. and goes away

  408. and at once

  409. forgets what he was like.

  410. But the one

  411. who looks into

  412. the perfect law

  413. the law of liberty

  414. and perseveres

  415. being no longer

  416. one who forgets

  417. but a doer

  418. who acts

  419. he will be blessed

  420. in his doing.

  421. If anyone

  422. thinks he is religious

  423. and does not

  424. bridle his tongue

  425. but deceives

  426. his heart

  427. this person's

  428. religion is worthless

  429. religion that is pure

  430. and undefiled

  431. before God

  432. and the Father

  433. is this

  434. to visit orphans

  435. and widows

  436. in their affliction

  437. and to keep oneself

  438. unstained

  439. from the world.

  440. May the Lord

  441. add his blessing

  442. to our reading

  443. that portion

  444. of his word.

  445. Let's join together

  446. again once more

  447. in prayer.

  448. Lord we thank you

  449. today for your word.

  450. We thank you

  451. for all that it

  452. contains.

  453. We thank you

  454. for the way

  455. that you took

  456. account of our

  457. needs

  458. as you caused

  459. your word

  460. to be written

  461. down over the

  462. centuries.

  463. We thank you

  464. therefore that your

  465. word is both

  466. authoritative

  467. and also relevant

  468. to our needs

  469. that it is backed

  470. up by your

  471. authority

  472. and by your

  473. knowledge of us.

  474. And we ask

  475. today that your

  476. word will be

  477. blessed to us

  478. and prized by us.

  479. Help us Lord

  480. to be like the

  481. psalmist who

  482. could say that

  483. he treasured

  484. your word in

  485. his heart

  486. so that he

  487. would not sin

  488. against you.

  489. As we come

  490. before you Lord

  491. and around your

  492. word Lord we

  493. pray today for

  494. your Holy Spirit

  495. to open our

  496. minds to give

  497. us an understanding

  498. of your word

  499. and to enable

  500. us to carry it

  501. forward in our

  502. lives so that

  503. we may be as

  504. this passage says

  505. to us a doers

  506. of your word

  507. and not hearers

  508. only.

  509. We give thanks

  510. Lord for each

  511. and every one

  512. that comes today

  513. to gather together

  514. with your people

  515. everywhere throughout

  516. the world.

  517. We know that we

  518. belong to a

  519. great volume of

  520. people,

  521. a great multitude

  522. of people

  523. most of whom

  524. we don't know

  525. and yet they are

  526. all known to you

  527. and all known

  528. to you intimately

  529. and personally.

  530. We thank you

  531. that your word

  532. assures us that

  533. you know even

  534. the number of

  535. the hairs on

  536. our head

  537. that you are

  538. able to deal

  539. with every aspect

  540. of our need

  541. however great

  542. or however small

  543. it may be.

  544. Lord we pray

  545. today that you

  546. bless us here

  547. as a people,

  548. bless us as we

  549. gather as a

  550. congregation,

  551. bless us with

  552. our individual

  553. concerns,

  554. with our family

  555. concerns,

  556. with our concerns

  557. in the wider

  558. sense for our

  559. community,

  560. for our nation,

  561. for the world

  562. in which we live.

  563. we give thanks

  564. that we are able

  565. to express these

  566. to you in prayer

  567. and that we are

  568. able as we sing

  569. your praises also

  570. to take account

  571. of the words

  572. that we are

  573. singing and

  574. recognize that

  575. in so many respects

  576. the things that

  577. we see in our

  578. world and in our

  579. society are not

  580. new but have

  581. been features of

  582. the world at

  583. different times

  584. in the way in

  585. which human

  586. beings have lived

  587. and interacted

  588. together.

  589. We ask today

  590. oh God that

  591. we here may be

  592. thankful for all

  593. the goodness that

  594. you keep showing

  595. to us for the

  596. ways in which we

  597. know your blessing

  598. already to have

  599. affected and

  600. touched our lives.

  601. We pray today

  602. that that will be

  603. added to as we

  604. seek further

  605. blessing here Lord

  606. from you at this

  607. time.

  608. We give thanks

  609. again for all

  610. that we can reflect

  611. on that you have

  612. done for us and

  613. you continue to do

  614. for us as a

  615. people.

  616. We pray today Lord

  617. that your work

  618. amongst us will

  619. continue that we

  620. will see much

  621. fruit for the

  622. way in which the

  623. gospel is presented

  624. and your people

  625. serve you that we

  626. will see many

  627. others coming to

  628. be joined to you

  629. and to walk in

  630. your ways and to

  631. give themselves to

  632. the work of the

  633. gospel in the

  634. different ways in

  635. which we would

  636. seek oh Lord to

  637. serve you and to

  638. hold forth the

  639. word of life in

  640. our community.

  641. Remember us in

  642. all our activities.

  643. Remember us in

  644. everything Lord that

  645. we seek to do in

  646. conjunction with your

  647. worship and the

  648. preaching of your

  649. word.

  650. We pray that today

  651. Lord we may follow

  652. with our own

  653. prayers everything

  654. that's happening

  655. already in regard to

  656. our young people

  657. in regard to the

  658. various ways in

  659. which we anticipate

  660. this week meetings

  661. to take place

  662. associated with

  663. your truth and

  664. with the gospel and

  665. with your people.

  666. And grant Lord to

  667. continue to remember

  668. us and to provide

  669. for us.

  670. Remember us in

  671. terms of the

  672. practical and

  673. financial needs of

  674. the congregation

  675. too.

  676. Lord we recognize in

  677. your providence that

  678. we live in difficult

  679. and testing times

  680. even in regard to

  681. these things even

  682. though we know that

  683. they are not as

  684. hard and testing as

  685. they are for many

  686. others throughout the

  687. nation and even

  688. throughout the world.

  689. Nevertheless Lord

  690. give us we pray to

  691. be dedicated to the

  692. upholding of your

  693. cause and we thank

  694. you for the measure

  695. in which this is

  696. already the place

  697. with us as a

  698. people.

  699. Remember now those

  700. who are ill of our

  701. number we pray for

  702. them today oh Lord

  703. and ask that you'd

  704. bless them whether

  705. at home or in

  706. hospital or in

  707. care homes receiving

  708. treatment or looking

  709. forward to such.

  710. Lord we pray for

  711. them and ask that

  712. your healing hand

  713. will be upon them

  714. where that is

  715. pleasing to you.

  716. We pray for those

  717. who mourn over

  718. loved ones gone

  719. and the death of

  720. loved ones Lord is

  721. something that

  722. features in our

  723. congregational life

  724. from week to week

  725. and we commend to

  726. you today those

  727. families those

  728. individuals who have

  729. lost loved ones in

  730. recent days in

  731. recent weeks and

  732. months and even in

  733. past years we Lord

  734. commend them to you

  735. for we know that

  736. bereavement and the

  737. sorrow and the

  738. absence of loved ones

  739. is something that

  740. remains with us all

  741. our days and we

  742. pray oh Lord as

  743. you are the one who

  744. promises to be a

  745. father to the

  746. fatherless and the

  747. widow stay we pray

  748. that you would prove

  749. yourself oh Lord to be

  750. for us one who is

  751. dependable at all

  752. times and consistent

  753. in the way in which

  754. you keep your

  755. promises.

  756. Remember the world

  757. in which we live

  758. we bring before you

  759. today Lord all the

  760. troubles of the

  761. world and the

  762. troubled parts of the

  763. world and we pray

  764. that you would bless

  765. where there is war and

  766. conflict and we know

  767. that there are many

  768. places Lord where this

  769. is the case throughout

  770. the world even in

  771. addition to the ones

  772. we regularly have

  773. featured on our news

  774. reports.

  775. Be merciful to us

  776. Lord we pray

  777. throughout our human

  778. society and turn us

  779. into your ways and be

  780. pleased to bring the

  781. quickening effects of

  782. the gospel to bear

  783. upon our world as we

  784. pray as we have

  785. already read in the

  786. Lord's prayer that

  787. your will be done on

  788. earth as it is in

  789. heaven.

  790. And we ask Lord today

  791. that you would also

  792. be pleased to bless us

  793. as a nation.

  794. Lord we are so

  795. concerned from week

  796. to week at the

  797. ways in which we

  798. find violence and

  799. protest turned into

  800. violence and ideologies

  801. that are contrary to

  802. the gospel upheld and

  803. exalted and praised.

  804. Be merciful to us

  805. Lord we pray as a

  806. people and turn us

  807. into your ways and

  808. help us to value again

  809. the gospel and its

  810. message and the

  811. testimony of your

  812. church throughout the

  813. ages that there is no

  814. other name given under

  815. heaven but the name of

  816. Jesus by which we must

  817. be saved.

  818. Be merciful to those

  819. who are over us in

  820. power and authority in

  821. our governments and

  822. with the king and all

  823. others Lord who have

  824. places of authority and

  825. influence and importance

  826. throughout our land.

  827. You have called upon us

  828. Lord to pray for those

  829. in authority and to

  830. pray that we may live

  831. peaceable lives and that

  832. we might have a society

  833. where the gospel will

  834. flourish.

  835. And so we do pray for

  836. these things today.

  837. We ask now that you'd

  838. bless us and further

  839. guide us in our praise

  840. and in our thoughts upon

  841. your word and as we

  842. seek to set it forth in

  843. the preaching of your

  844. word.

  845. Be with us Lord we pray

  846. in all aspects of this.

  847. Forgive our sins and

  848. cleanse us for Jesus'

  849. sake.

  850. Amen.

  851. Amen.

  852. Well we'll sing once again

  853. before we turn to the

  854. scriptures singing this

  855. time in Psalm 19.

  856. This time it's in the

  857. Sing Psalms version.

  858. You'll find that on page

  859. 23 of the psalm books.

  860. Page 23 and we're singing

  861. verses 7 to 11.

  862. The tune is St.

  863. John.

  864. The perfect law of God

  865. revives the soul of man.

  866. The statutes which are

  867. sure make wise the

  868. simple one.

  869. The precepts of the Lord

  870. are right and fill the

  871. heart with great delight.

  872. Words again which

  873. celebrate the word of God

  874. and the effects of God's

  875. word when it's blessed to

  876. us and how it brings to

  877. our hearts such joy when

  878. we rejoice in the Lord

  879. through it.

  880. These verses then 7 to 11.

  881. The perfect law of God

  882. revives the soul of man.

  883. The perfect law of God

  884. revives the soul of man.

  885. His statutes which are sure

  886. make wise the simple one.

  887. The perfect law of God.

  888. The perfect law of God.

  889. The perfect law of God.

  890. The perfect law of God.

  891. The perfect law of God.

  892. And fill the heart with great delight.

  893. God with great delight.

  894. cybt十 Corrections And the perfect law of God.

  895. The perfect law of God.

  896. Who will the perfect law of God.

  897. Gn오ly-ié-ered Furnit-Lyem.

  898. Check light on what we see.

  899. The fear of God is pure,

  900. and lasts eternally.

  901. The standards of the Lord express

  902. His perfect truth and righteousness.

  903. Of our worth and gold,

  904. and what pure Lord they are,

  905. and our money from the gold,

  906. and our money sweeter fine.

  907. May or the servant of the Lord

  908. and keep in heaven's day reward.

  909. Now let's turn together, as we wait on the Lord,

  910. to James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  911. Today we're looking at verses 22 to 25,

  912. and I'm going to read again from verse 18,

  913. because these verses really flow together.

  914. So we'll read from verse 19.

  915. Know this, my beloved brothers,

  916. that let every person be quick to hear,

  917. slow to speak, slow to anger,

  918. for the anger of the man does not produce

  919. the righteousness that God requires.

  920. Therefore put away all filthiness,

  921. and rampant wickedness,

  922. and receive with meekness

  923. the implanted word,

  924. which is able to save your souls.

  925. But be doers of the word,

  926. and not hearers only,

  927. deceiving yourselves.

  928. For if anyone is a hearer of the word,

  929. and not a doer,

  930. he's like a man who looks intently

  931. at his natural face in a mirror,

  932. for he looks at himself and goes away,

  933. and at once forgets what he was like.

  934. But the one who looks into the perfect law,

  935. the law of liberty,

  936. and perseveres,

  937. being no hearer who forgets,

  938. but a doer who acts,

  939. he will be blessed in his doing.

  940. Well, when you read through the epistle of James,

  941. you very soon realize

  942. that this is a very practical part of Scripture,

  943. a very practical letter.

  944. Indeed, you could say that,

  945. it would be true to say that James

  946. is the most practical

  947. of all the letters of the New Testament,

  948. because it's more or less practiced

  949. from beginning to end.

  950. And James is always to the point.

  951. As you read through his letter,

  952. you begin to realize,

  953. well, here's somebody

  954. who takes no prisoners

  955. with what he says.

  956. He's very often sharp.

  957. He's very often denouncing

  958. certain ways of life.

  959. And therefore,

  960. he confronts us with the truth of God,

  961. not in an unloving way,

  962. but in a very direct way.

  963. And that's one thing we have to

  964. bear in mind as a distinction

  965. that's important for ourselves

  966. as well at all times.

  967. For somebody to be non-compromising

  968. in terms of the gospel,

  969. in terms of what God himself

  970. has set forth in his word,

  971. to be non-compromising,

  972. to be steadfast in keeping

  973. to the word of God,

  974. it's not the same thing

  975. as to be unloving.

  976. Yes, there are ways

  977. in which we can present the gospel

  978. in a way that's not tactful,

  979. in a way that's harsh,

  980. in a way that seems

  981. at least to be unloving.

  982. But that's not what James is doing.

  983. He's being direct

  984. because what he wants to present

  985. to his readers is so important

  986. in terms of their lives practically.

  987. And I hope we come across that way

  988. in the preaching of the gospel

  989. because God lays that burden upon us

  990. as preachers of the gospel

  991. to be uncompromising

  992. in presenting the truth

  993. of the gospel

  994. to all who hear it.

  995. But we never want to be

  996. unloving in doing that.

  997. Being at times direct

  998. as the word is direct.

  999. If we're true to the word,

1000. then we present the word

1001. as directly speaking to us,

  1002. speaking to us

  1003. in an uncompromising way.

1004. But we never want to do that

  1005. unlovingly.

1006. We never want to present things

1007. harshly or in a way

  1008. that comes across

1009. as if we didn't really care

1010. about those we're preaching to.

1011. So if we come across

1012. at times as seeming to be harsh

  1013. or overly direct,

  1014. I hope it's because

  1015. we're being true

1016. to the word of God

1017. and not because we're unfeeling

  1018. or unloving towards yourselves.

1019. And so here in this passage

  1020. from chapter 1, verse 21,

1021. we read there in verse 21,

  1022. he finishes that verse

1023. by referring to the word of God,

  1024. the implanted word,

  1025. he calls it there,

  1026. using an agricultural term.

1027. Or verse 18 even says

1028. that of his own will,

1029. God has brought us forth,

  1030. given birth to us

1031. by the word of truth.

1032. And he carries on that theme

1033. of the word of God,

1034. the word of truth that we have,

  1035. when he says,

1036. now but be doers of the word

  1037. and not hearers only,

  1038. deceiving ourselves.

1039. And so in verse 19,

  1040. you could say

1041. what he's dealing with is

1042. how we hear the word.

1043. We have to receive the word

1044. in a way that's quick to hear it.

  1045. Somebody has said,

  1046. God has given us

1047. two ears and one mouth.

  1048. Just to follow what

  1049. James is saying there,

  1050. quick to hear,

  1051. slow to speak.

1052. And that's how we find ourselves

  1053. confronted with God's word,

1054. to be quick to hear it,

1055. to be anxious to hear it,

  1056. but to be slow

  1057. in using our tongues.

  1058. He has a chapter

1059. that deals with the tongue

  1060. in chapter three

1061. and that's an important passage.

1062. But that's taking us away

  1063. from the main passage

1064. that we're looking at today.

1065. How we hear the word

1066. and then in verses 21 to 25,

1067. you could say he's looking at

1068. how we live out the word.

  1069. That's what we've called

  1070. our study today.

  1071. The Bible lived out.

1072. The Bible as it's seen

1073. in the lives of people

  1074. practically that want

1075. to be true to God,

1076. that live out the word

1077. of God in their lives.

  1078. And that's really what

  1079. James is saying.

1080. Be doers of the word

  1081. and not hearers only.

  1082. And he follows on

1083. by giving us an illustration

1084. as well of the mirror.

1085. So two things he's looking.

  1086. He's giving us firstly

  1087. the imperative.

1088. It's really in the form

  1089. of an imperative

  1090. or a command.

1091. Be doers of the word

  1092. and not hearers only.

  1093. And he's following

  1094. that imperative

  1095. by the illustrative,

  1096. by the illustration.

1097. If anyone is a hearer

  1098. of the word

  1099. and not a doer,

  1100. he's like a man

  1101. who looks intently

  1102. at his natural face

  1103. in a mirror

  1104. and so on.

  1105. So following that pattern,

  1106. let's look at

1107. the points he gives us

1108. there under these two headings.

  1109. First of all,

  1110. there's this imperative.

1111. Be doers of the word

  1112. and not hearers only,

  1113. deceiving yourselves.

  1114. Now it's clear

1115. from what James is saying there

  1116. that hearing the word

  1117. is not unimportant.

1118. And how we hear the word

  1119. is not unimportant.

  1120. That's what we said

  1121. in verse 18,

1122. going back to being quick

  1123. to hear the word.

  1124. In other words,

  1125. to hear the word

  1126. in such a way

  1127. as realizes

  1128. is the importance

  1129. of taking account

  1130. of what this word

  1131. is saying to us,

  1132. seriously reckoning with it

  1133. and what it's saying,

1134. taking it into our minds,

  1135. thinking it through,

  1136. applying it to life,

  1137. to our behavior,

1138. to our way of life

1139. and all aspects of it.

1140. We are to hear the word

  1141. in such a way

1142. that really hears it intently,

  1143. that hears it seriously,

  1144. that regards it

1145. as God speaking to us

  1146. through the written word

  1147. that he's given us.

  1148. Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10:17

  1149. verse 17,

  1150. you remember that

1151. that context has to do

  1152. with preaching

1153. and how God has sent people

  1154. to preach the word,

  1155. but he also says

1156. that faith comes by hearing

1157. and hearing the word of God

1158. or the word of Christ.

  1159. In other words,

1160. the faith that we want to have

1161. as a feature of our lives

  1162. by which we live,

  1163. faith in God,

  1164. trust in God,

1165. how does that come about?

1166. Well, it comes about largely,

1167. Paul was saying in Romans 10,

1168. by the hearing of the gospel,

1169. by the hearing of the word preached.

1170. And that has its own implications,

1171. which I'm not going to spend time on

1172. at the moment to add to that,

  1173. to amplify that,

  1174. but the word preached,

1175. seeing it's such an important feature

1176. of how faith is produced

1177. and how faith is fed by God,

1178. it's so vital to us

1179. to be under the preaching of the word

1180. as you are here today,

  1181. whether you're online

  1182. or here in person.

1183. We're under the word preached,

  1184. and the word preached,

  1185. God has specified,

  1186. is his way,

1187. one of his main ways

1188. of dealing with our needs

  1189. as human beings.

  1190. Preaching is an agency

1191. that God has set up.

1192. Agency in the sense of a means

  1193. or a method,

  1194. but you could say

  1195. preaching is the agency

  1196. for person building,

  1197. for building us up

  1198. in our person.

  1199. So that fits into

1200. what James is actually saying

1201. in being doers of the word

  1202. and not hearers only.

1203. When he says not hearers only,

  1204. obviously means

1205. but you are still hearers also.

  1206. And the hearing comes

  1207. ahead of the doing.

1208. We can only be doers of the word,

  1209. put it into practice

  1210. in our lives

1211. by first of all hearing it

  1212. and hearing it

1213. in a way that intends

  1214. the doing of it,

1215. in a way that regards it

  1216. as an important feature

1217. of what God's gifts to us are,

1218. the preaching of the word

  1219. being a primary means

  1220. of faith

  1221. and of producing faith.

  1222. So James has emphasis

1223. on being not hearers only,

  1224. being doers

  1225. as well as hearers.

  1226. In other words,

1227. we really have to be careful

1228. that we come to be doers

  1229. of God's word

  1230. and not be satisfied

  1231. with simply hearing it.

  1232. It's a great thing

1233. to be hearers of God's word

  1234. and we've said

1235. how important a feature it is

  1236. in the method

  1237. that God uses

  1238. to feed our souls.

  1239. But you know,

  1240. we could go away

  1241. from here today,

  1242. I could be away

  1243. from here today

  1244. and congratulate myself

  1245. that I had preached

  1246. the word of God,

1247. that I had kept to the text

  1248. that I had chosen

1249. or God had laid on my heart

  1250. to preach from.

  1251. You could go away

  1252. from here today

  1253. and say,

1254. well, I heard the word of God,

  1255. I really listened

  1256. while I was there

  1257. and then go away

  1258. and congratulate yourself

  1259. and congratulate myself

  1260. in doing that.

1261. But have I put it

  1262. into practice?

  1263. Have I become

  1264. the things

  1265. that God itself

  1266. in his word

1267. tells me I need to be?

1268. Have I done the things

  1269. or have I avoided

  1270. doing the things

  1271. that God's word

  1272. sets before me

  1273. I should be doing

  1274. or not be doing?

  1275. Remember John

  1276. in chapter 5

  1277. and verses 39 to 40,

  1278. Jesus speaking there

  1279. to the crowd there,

1280. he's speaking to those people

1281. that were at that time

  1282. gathered around him

  1283. and he's finding fault

  1284. with them

  1285. for one thing especially,

  1286. he's finding fault

  1287. with them

  1288. not for searching

  1289. the scriptures

  1290. because that's what

  1291. they were doing.

  1292. You are searching

  1293. the scriptures,

  1294. he said,

  1295. for they are they

  1296. which testify about me

  1297. and in them

  1298. you do think

  1299. you have eternal life

  1300. and they weren't wrong

  1301. in that.

  1302. But you will not

  1303. come to me

1304. that you might have life.

  1305. See,

1306. you can be a hearer

  1307. of the word,

  1308. I have never come

  1309. to Christ.

1310. You can be a hearer

  1311. of the word today

  1312. and satisfy yourself

  1313. that you've heard

  1314. the word,

  1315. that you've been

  1316. attentive to the word,

  1317. that you've gone

  1318. to where the word

  1319. is preached

1320. and then you go home

  1321. unsaved.

  1322. And that means

  1323. you haven't really

  1324. done the word.

  1325. You haven't been through

1326. to what God is saying

  1327. to you,

  1328. to come to Jesus,

  1329. to repent of sin,

  1330. to place your trust

  1331. in Christ,

  1332. to give your life

  1333. over to him.

  1334. So many ways

  1335. in which we can

1336. be hearers of the word

  1337. and be hearers only.

  1338. And then James

  1339. adds something

  1340. very significantly

  1341. to that.

  1342. He said,

1343. Be doers of the word

  1344. and not hearers only,

  1345. deceiving yourselves.

  1346. Now this is something

  1347. that James frequently

  1348. mentions,

  1349. deceiving yourselves.

  1350. We saw it earlier

  1351. in the chapter

  1352. where he mentioned

  1353. deceiving,

  1354. being deceived

  1355. in verse 16.

  1356. Do not be deceived,

  1357. my beloved brothers.

  1358. Every good gift,

  1359. every perfect gift

  1360. is from above.

  1361. And he mentions

  1362. throughout the letter

  1363. different times

1364. that we can deceive ourselves.

  1365. And the word

  1366. that's used here

  1367. is very interesting.

  1368. It really means

  1369. to be led astray

  1370. by false reasoning.

  1371. To be led away

  1372. by false reasoning.

  1373. In other words,

1374. you can hear the word,

1375. you can in a measure

  1376. accept what it's saying

  1377. and listen to it

  1378. in such a way

  1379. that you're actually

  1380. careful at the time.

  1381. And we'll see that

  1382. in a minute

  1383. in the illustration used.

1384. But then you don't do

1385. what the word is saying.

  1386. And you know,

  1387. you can end up

  1388. very easily

  1389. persuading yourself,

  1390. well,

  1391. I don't really need

  1392. that part of

  1393. a Christian character.

1394. I can leave that out.

  1395. I can be happy

  1396. with what I've got.

  1397. I don't really need

  1398. actually seriously

  1399. to take communion,

1400. to go to the Lord's table,

  1401. though I know

  1402. God's word

  1403. is telling me that.

1404. But I can just leave that.

  1405. I'm not really thinking

1406. of that as so important.

  1407. You can deceive yourself

  1408. so easily.

  1409. I can deceive myself

  1410. so easily

  1411. by persuading ourselves,

  1412. by false reasoning,

1413. that there are certain features

1414. of what the Bible describes

  1415. as a Christian life

1416. that are not applicable to me.

  1417. That are not applicable

  1418. or necessary for me

  1419. to follow out.

  1420. That's for other folks.

1421. Other folks who want to

  1422. go that far

  1423. with their religious life

  1424. or their spiritual life,

  1425. their Christian life,

  1426. that's fine,

  1427. that's for them,

1428. but I'm quite happy with them.

  1429. I'm a hearer of the word.

  1430. I go to church.

  1431. I do that.

  1432. That'll do for me.

  1433. Well, James is saying,

  1434. be careful.

1435. You could be deceiving yourself.

1436. Be a doer of the word

1437. and not a hearer only,

  1438. deceiving yourself.

  1439. People tell us that

1440. if you have a stretch of water

1441. or an area of water

1442. that has a stream flowing into it

  1443. but no outlet,

1444. what happens to that stretch of water

1445. or to that area of water?

1446. Something like the Dead Sea,

  1447. for example.

1448. Other areas as well you can see.

1449. But what happens to that area of water

  1450. if there's a lovely,

  1451. fresh, flowing stream

  1452. going into it

1453. but nothing coming out of it?

  1454. Well, it becomes stagnant.

  1455. It putrefies.

  1456. It becomes stinking.

  1457. And it becomes useless.

1458. You know, a human life

  1459. can be like that.

  1460. And if we're through

1461. to what James is saying

  1462. and giving place

  1463. to his pointedness

  1464. and to his directness,

1465. your life and my life

1466. could very easily be that

  1467. if we're deceiving ourselves

1468. that being a hearer of the word

  1469. is sufficient,

  1470. if you like,

1471. the water of the gospel

  1472. is going into us.

  1473. But there's no outflow

  1474. and our life becomes

  1475. like stagnant water

1476. if we take the hearer's only approach.

1477. So, be a doer of the word

1478. and not a hearer only.

  1479. That's the imperative

1480. that James is beginning with.

  1481. But he moves on

  1482. to the illustrative

1483. because he wants to illustrate that

  1484. to give us something

  1485. by which we can

  1486. have that

  1487. greater focus

  1488. upon what he's saying.

  1489. And when he says

  1490. in the illustration here,

  1491. he is using

  1492. the illustration

  1493. of a mirror.

1494. If anyone is a hearer

  1495. of the word

  1496. and not a doer,

  1497. in other words,

  1498. a hearer only,

  1499. he's like a man

  1500. who looks intently

  1501. at his natural face

  1502. in a mirror.

1503. For he looks at himself

  1504. and goes away

  1505. and at once

1506. forgets what he was like.

  1507. But the one

  1508. who looks into

  1509. the perfect law,

  1510. the law of liberty,

1511. we'll see what that means

  1512. in a minute.

  1513. It means really

1514. the whole of the word of God,

1515. not just the law part of it.

1516. If he looks into that,

1517. he being not a hearer

  1518. who forgets

1519. but a doer who acts,

  1520. he will be blessed

  1521. in his doing.

  1522. In other words,

  1523. he's still focusing

  1524. on the difference

1525. between being a hearer only

  1526. and somebody

  1527. who's a hearer

  1528. and a doer.

1529. Now look at the illustration.

  1530. Somebody who looks

  1531. at himself

  1532. in a mirror

  1533. and then goes away

  1534. and forgets.

  1535. Now the difference,

  1536. the distinction

  1537. James is making

  1538. is not

  1539. between somebody

  1540. who just glances

  1541. casually at himself

  1542. and somebody

  1543. who really,

  1544. in looking into

  1545. the law of liberty,

  1546. looks seriously

  1547. at himself.

  1548. Because you'll notice

  1549. that both

  1550. use words

  1551. that show

  1552. the looking

  1553. as that looking intently.

  1554. Here's a man

  1555. who's looking intently

  1556. at his natural face

  1557. in a mirror.

1558. He doesn't just go out

  1559. in the morning,

1560. have a look at his

  1561. face in the mirror

  1562. before he goes,

  1563. just a casual glance

  1564. and he says,

  1565. okay,

  1566. my hair's okay

  1567. and I don't need

  1568. to shave today

  1569. so off I'll go.

  1570. It's not that kind

  1571. of casual glance

  1572. he's talking about

  1573. at all.

  1574. He looks at himself

  1575. intently

  1576. in this mirror.

  1577. He looks at

  1578. what his face

  1579. is like

  1580. as he sees himself

  1581. in the mirror

1582. but then he goes away

  1583. and at once

1584. forgets what he was like.

  1585. In other words,

  1586. James is telling us

  1587. that it's so,

  1588. so possible

  1589. to look at yourself

1590. in the word of God

  1591. as the mirror

1592. by which it tells you

  1593. about yourself

  1594. and what you're like

1595. and then all too soon

  1596. be distracted.

  1597. Something happens

  1598. in your life

  1599. and you actually

  1600. don't find that image

  1601. of what the mirror

  1602. gave you,

  1603. the word of God

  1604. gave you,

  1605. abiding with you

  1606. so you forget it

1607. and you just carry on

  1608. as things were.

  1609. He looks at himself

  1610. intently

  1611. and he forgets

  1612. what he's like.

  1613. We're so very easily

  1614. distracted,

  1615. aren't we,

  1616. from the image

  1617. of ourselves

  1618. that the Bible

  1619. gives us

  1620. and we allow

  1621. so many things

  1622. to interfere

  1623. with that image

  1624. of ourselves

  1625. as God shows us

  1626. what we're like

1627. and what our needs are

  1628. and whether

  1629. we're unsaved still

  1630. and the Bible

  1631. tells us

  1632. you need to repent

1633. and to place your trust

  1634. in Jesus

  1635. and then something happens

  1636. as you leave church

  1637. and interacts

  1638. and interferes

  1639. with your thinking

1640. and you go the rest

  1641. of the week

  1642. and there's all

  1643. of these distractions

  1644. and before the next

  1645. Lord's Day comes

  1646. you've lost

  1647. the image of yourself

  1648. the Bible gave you

  1649. or you might be

  1650. a Christian today

  1651. and you might say

  1652. well the Bible

  1653. showed me today

1654. what I need to do

  1655. I need to attend

  1656. to my life

  1657. in a way that

  1658. prays regularly

  1659. in a way that

  1660. values company

  1661. with other Christians

  1662. I need to attend

  1663. to my life

  1664. by regular reading

1665. of the word of God

  1666. so that I do

  1667. that aspect of it

  1668. faithfully as well

  1669. but then throughout

  1670. the week

  1671. so many things

  1672. happen don't they

  1673. that distract us

  1674. myself included

  1675. from all of these

  1676. aspects of

  1677. what's essential

  1678. to a Christian life

  1679. and a Christian character

  1680. and he's saying

  1681. don't

  1682. be like that

  1683. otherwise we're like

  1684. somebody

  1685. looks intently

  1686. at himself

  1687. in a mirror

  1688. sees there

  1689. what he sees

  1690. takes stock of it

  1691. but then just

  1692. forgets it

1693. and goes on his way

  1694. as if he'd seen

  1695. nothing at all

  1696. and then maybe

  1697. a good long time

  1698. after that

  1699. he realizes

  1700. that's not good enough

1701. I need to go back

  1702. to the mirror

  1703. but he contrasts that

  1704. with the one

  1705. who looks into

  1706. the perfect law

  1707. the law

  1708. of liberty

  1709. the perfect law

  1710. the law of liberty

  1711. is a reference

  1712. to the whole

  1713. word of God

  1714. I'll come to

  1715. the actual phrase

  1716. in a minute

  1717. but just keep

  1718. the contrast here

  1719. and the way

  1720. in which they're

  1721. compared

  1722. the person

  1723. who looks

  1724. at himself

  1725. intently

  1726. but then forgets

  1727. and here's the person

  1728. who looks into

  1729. and it really means

  1730. to stoop down

  1731. to look into

1732. so it's the same idea

  1733. of

  1734. well it's a different word

  1735. James uses

  1736. the same idea

  1737. of looking

  1738. seriously

  1739. into the word

  1740. of God

  1741. who looks into

  1742. the perfect law

  1743. the law of liberty

  1744. but being no hearer

  1745. who forgets

  1746. but a doer

  1747. who acts

  1748. in other words

  1749. this person

  1750. unlike the one

1751. who looked in the mirror

  1752. and then went away

  1753. and was distracted

  1754. this person

  1755. looked into the mirror

  1756. of God's word

  1757. saw himself

  1758. or herself

  1759. in God's word

  1760. and then what

  1761. well they went away

  1762. and carried that mirror

  1763. with them

  1764. they remained

  1765. in the company

1766. of the word of God

  1767. they let the word

  1768. of God

  1769. actually travel

  1770. with them

  1771. into the various

  1772. aspects of the day

  1773. that they were

  1774. involved with

  1775. and I know that's

  1776. hugely challenging

  1777. to myself

  1778. and it's challenging

  1779. to you as well

  1780. because I'm sure

  1781. if you're like me

  1782. there are times

  1783. throughout each day

  1784. when you realize

  1785. I haven't really

1786. let the word of God

1787. influence how I see that

  1788. or how I spoke

  1789. or how I related

  1790. to such and such

  1791. a person

  1792. we're all guilty

  1793. of that

  1794. but here is

  1795. the way that James

  1796. reminds us

  1797. how important it is

  1798. to look into

  1799. the perfect law

  1800. of liberty

  1801. the mirror

  1802. of God's word

  1803. but actually

  1804. carry that with us

  1805. he being not

  1806. a forgetful hearer

  1807. but a doer

  1808. who acts

  1809. he will be blessed

  1810. in his doing

  1811. in other words

  1812. he perseveres

  1813. in the company

  1814. of the word

  1815. of God

  1816. that he looked into

  1817. and saw himself in

1818. so if you carry that

  1819. contrast with you

  1820. you can see that

1821. this is how he puts

  1822. it into practice

  1823. now that means that

1824. we today need to give

  1825. not just a hearing

1826. to this word of God

  1827. but to be hearing

  1828. in such a way

  1829. that says

1830. I must let this word

  1831. remain with me

  1832. throughout this week

  1833. I've begun this week

  1834. in a good way

  1835. I've been in church

1836. I've heard the word of God

  1837. I've heard it preached

1838. I've been under the word

  1839. by which faith comes

1840. so now I must attend

  1841. every day to this

1842. that I keep that word

  1843. in my company

1844. and keep company with it

  1845. that I'm not a forgetful

  1846. person who just looked

  1847. on one occasion

  1848. and then forget

1849. for the rest of the week

1850. I must carry it with me

1851. I must be in its companionship

1852. it must be my constant companion

  1853. must feed my mind

  1854. my thinking

  1855. my reactions

  1856. my speech

  1857. that's what we

1858. need to put to ourselves

  1859. today friends

  1860. isn't it

1861. because we want to be

  1862. productive

  1863. fruitful Christians

1864. we want to be people

1865. who have some sort of

  1866. impact or influence

  1867. in the society

  1868. in which we live

1869. we will not do that

  1870. by being hearers

  1871. only

1872. of the word of God

  1873. we must be hearers

  1874. and doers

  1875. some people think

  1876. that

  1877. this passage

  1878. really has to do

  1879. with us

  1880. practically being

  1881. as fully involved

  1882. as possible

  1883. with things like

  1884. the church's outreach

  1885. evangelism

  1886. evangelistic activities

  1887. whatever they might be

  1888. and of course

  1889. that's included in it

  1890. absolutely

  1891. but you mustn't think

  1892. that being a doer

  1893. of the word

  1894. is just those

  1895. sort of things

  1896. where you're seen

  1897. practically to be

  1898. active Christians

  1899. to be a doer

  1900. of the word

  1901. means you pray

  1902. faithfully

  1903. it means you read

  1904. your Bible

  1905. faithfully

  1906. it means you take

  1907. your relationships

  1908. faithfully

  1909. it means every

  1910. single thing

  1911. of a practical

  1912. Christian life

  1913. that you put

  1914. into action

  1915. as a doing

  1916. of the word

  1917. of God

  1918. so every aspect

  1919. of life

  1920. privately

  1921. relationships

  1922. publicly

  1923. whatever they are

  1924. they have to be

  1925. by the

  1926. they have to be

  1927. in a way

  1928. that's fed

  1929. by the word

  1930. of God

  1931. so become

  1932. doers

  1933. of the word

  1934. of God

  1935. and being

  1936. faithful

  1937. to God

  1938. involves being

  1939. a doer

  1940. of the word

  1941. of God

  1942. but let's look

  1943. at why he calls

  1944. this the perfect

  1945. law

  1946. the law

  1947. of liberty

  1948. whoever

  1949. looks into

  1950. the perfect

  1951. law

  1952. the law

  1953. of liberty

  1954. and perseveres

  1955. well you carry

  1956. the imagery

  1957. with you

  1958. of the word

  1959. of God

  1960. being a mirror

  1961. in which you

  1962. see yourself

  1963. and you're

  1964. looking into it

  1965. into peering

  1966. into it

  1967. as he says

  1968. in verse 25

  1969. looking into it

  1970. in terms of

  1971. stooping down

  1972. humbling yourself

  1973. to say

  1974. this word

  1975. is the word

  1976. that must direct

  1977. my mind

  1978. not the other

  1979. way about

  1980. and as you do

  1981. that

  1982. it is the

  1983. perfect law

  1984. the law

  1985. of liberty

  1986. sometimes we think

  1987. that God's

  1988. law

  1989. is at odds

  1990. with the gospel

  1991. sometimes we think

  1992. that God's law

  1993. is something

  1994. very rigid

  1995. and it is

  1996. something of course

  1997. which is

  1998. itself set

  1999. by God

  2000. in which the

  2001. character of God

  2002. is set forth

  2003. and that remains

  2004. the case

  2005. whatever we make

  2006. of it

  2007. but

  2008. James is actually

  2009. here describing

  2010. the whole

  2011. of scripture

  2012. the whole of

  2013. the word of God

  2014. and describing it

  2015. as the law

  2016. of liberty

  2017. why does he do

  2018. that

  2019. how can he link

  2020. the idea of

  2021. law

  2022. with liberty

  2023. or with freedom

  2024. because sometimes

  2025. the Bible does

  2026. speak about

  2027. the works of the

  2028. law

  2029. being bondage

  2030. if we're trying

  2031. to please God

  2032. by keeping the

  2033. law ourselves

  2034. instead of

  2035. turning to Jesus

  2036. and accepting

  2037. Jesus as one

  2038. who kept the

  2039. law perfectly

  2040. then we're in

  2041. the position

  2042. of legalism

  2043. and trying to

  2044. do something

  2045. ourselves

  2046. which has been

  2047. done for us

  2048. in Jesus

  2049. that's not the

  2050. idea that's

  2051. behind this at

  2052. all

  2053. the law

  2054. the perfect

  2055. law

  2056. the law

  2057. of liberty

  2058. let me just

  2059. think about

  2060. Israel for a

  2061. moment as they

  2062. came out of

  2063. Egypt

  2064. came through

  2065. the wilderness

  2066. and a part

  2067. of the journey

  2068. and then they

  2069. arrived at

  2070. Mount Sinai

  2071. well what

  2072. happened at

  2073. Mount Sinai

  2074. why was

  2075. Mount Sinai

  2076. so important

  2077. to them

  2078. and so much

  2079. a feature

  2080. of their life

  2081. afterwards

  2082. because what

  2083. happened at

  2084. Mount Sinai

  2085. was that God

  2086. gave them

  2087. his law

  2088. he gave them

  2089. not just the

  2090. Ten Commandments

  2091. but other

  2092. laws as well

  2093. but the Ten

  2094. Commandments

  2095. especially

  2096. he gave them

  2097. that as their

  2098. moral code

  2099. as the way

  2100. by which their

  2101. life was to be

  2102. directed

  2103. and their

  2104. lifestyle

  2105. was to be

  2106. directed

  2107. he gave them

  2108. that law

  2109. as the

  2110. lifestyle required

  2111. by God

  2112. was set forth

  2113. in it

  2114. but who

  2115. were they

  2116. what was their

  2117. position on

  2118. Mount Sinai

  2119. he didn't

  2120. bring them

  2121. to Mount

  2122. Sinai

  2123. so as to

  2124. say

  2125. if you

  2126. keep

  2127. this

  2128. law

  2129. then

  2130. I'll

  2131. treat

  2132. you

  2133. as

  2134. deserving

  2135. of my

  2136. redemption

  2137. he had

  2138. already

  2139. redeemed

  2140. them

  2141. they had

  2142. come out

  2143. of Egypt

  2144. by the

  2145. power

  2146. of God

  2147. they were

  2148. God's

  2149. redeemed

  2150. covenant

  2151. people

  2152. in that

  2153. sense

  2154. and they

  2155. had come

  2156. out of

  2157. that bondage

  2158. of Egypt

  2159. the slavery

  2160. of Egypt

  2161. they had

  2162. been kept

  2163. in that

  2164. for many

  2165. years

  2166. hundreds

  2167. of years

  2168. and here

  2169. they were

  2170. released

  2171. by God's

  2172. power

  2173. by God's

  2174. grace

  2175. by God's

  2176. love

  2177. from that

  2178. bondage

  2179. of Egypt

  2180. and here

  2181. they were

  2182. as a

  2183. redeemed

  2184. freed

  2185. people

  2186. given

  2187. the law

  2188. of God

  2189. for their

  2190. direction

  2191. that's

  2192. really what

  2193. the Christian

  2194. life

  2195. is about

  2196. God

  2197. has

  2198. released

  2199. you

  2200. has given

  2201. you liberty

  2202. from sin

  2203. from the

  2204. guilt of sin

  2205. from the

  2206. grip of

  2207. Satan

  2208. and he's

  2209. brought you

  2210. to present

  2211. you with

  2212. his word

  2213. as your

  2214. safeguard

  2215. if you like

  2216. as your

  2217. directions

  2218. for life

  2219. and as

  2220. he's done

  2221. that

  2222. you come

  2223. to this

  2224. word of

  2225. God

  2226. even the

  2227. parts of

  2228. it that

  2229. are actually

  2230. laws

  2231. and you

  2232. don't regard

  2233. them as

  2234. being

  2235. burdensome

  2236. as somehow

  2237. or other

  2238. being

  2239. inappropriate

  2240. for a

  2241. Christian

  2242. life

  2243. you rejoice

  2244. that

  2245. they keep

  2246. you safe

  2247. that

  2248. they tell

  2249. you what

  2250. God

  2251. is like

  2252. as well

  2253. as other

  2254. aspects

  2255. of his

  2256. word

  2257. let me

  2258. just

  2259. read

  2260. from one

  2261. of the

  2262. Psalms

  2263. Psalm 119

  2264. which is

  2265. all about

  2266. the word

  2267. of God

  2268. sometimes

  2269. called

  2270. statutes

  2271. testimonies

  2272. precepts

  2273. word

  2274. but this

  2275. is what

  2276. he says

  2277. in

  2278. verse 97

  2279. oh how

  2280. I love

  2281. your law

  2282. it is my

  2283. meditation

  2284. all the

  2285. day

  2286. your

  2287. commandment

  2288. makes me

  2289. wiser

  2290. than my

  2291. enemies

  2292. for it

  2293. is ever

  2294. with me

  2295. verse 103

  2296. have a

  2297. similar

  2298. emphasis

  2299. there

  2300. how sweet

  2301. are your

  2302. words

  2303. to my

  2304. taste

  2305. sweeter

  2306. than honey

  2307. to my

  2308. mouth

  2309. through your

  2310. precepts

  2311. I get

  2312. understanding

  2313. therefore I

  2314. hate

  2315. every

  2316. false

  2317. way

  2318. and verse

  2319. 162

  2320. just picking

  2321. up some

  2322. verses from

  2323. the whole

  2324. Psalm here

  2325. but 162

  2326. I rejoice

  2327. at your

  2328. word

  2329. like one

  2330. who finds

  2331. great spoil

  2332. I hate

  2333. and abhor

  2334. falsehood

  2335. but I

  2336. love

  2337. your law

  2338. seven times

  2339. a day

  2340. I praise

  2341. you for

  2342. your righteous

  2343. rules

  2344. great peace

  2345. have those

  2346. who love

  2347. your law

  2348. nothing can

  2349. make them

  2350. stumble

  2351. see how

  2352. important

  2353. how precious

  2354. how central

  2355. how foundational

  2356. how liberating

  2357. if you like

  2358. the word

  2359. of God

  2360. the law

  2361. of God

  2362. as he calls

  2363. it

  2364. was to

  2365. him

  2366. that's why

  2367. he relished

  2368. it

  2369. that's why

  2370. he wanted

  2371. to live

  2372. it out

  2373. to be

  2374. a doer

  2375. of that

  2376. law

  2377. of that

  2378. word

  2379. and not

  2380. a hearer

  2381. only

  2382. and this

  2383. is really

  2384. what

  2385. James is

  2386. setting

  2387. before us

  2388. today

  2389. the one

  2390. who looks

  2391. into the

  2392. perfect

  2393. law

  2394. the law

  2395. of liberty

  2396. we're taking

  2397. the whole

  2398. of scripture

  2399. and saying

  2400. this is

  2401. God's

  2402. regulating

  2403. word

  2404. for us

  2405. and it's

  2406. not burdensome

  2407. though it

  2408. places certain

  2409. restrictions

  2410. on us

  2411. whoever

  2412. looks into

  2413. the law

  2414. of liberty

  2415. and perseveres

  2416. who remains

  2417. in its

  2418. company

  2419. being no

  2420. hearer who

  2421. forgets

  2422. but a

  2423. doer who

  2424. acts

  2425. he will

  2426. be blessed

  2427. in his

  2428. doing

  2429. and when

  2430. James'

  2431. companion

  2432. John

  2433. wrote his

  2434. small but

  2435. important

  2436. third letter

  2437. this is what

  2438. he said

  2439. in verse

  2440. four

  2441. I have

  2442. no

  2443. greater

  2444. joy

  2445. and to

  2446. hear that

  2447. my children

  2448. walk

  2449. in the

  2450. truth

  2451. in the

  2452. ways of

  2453. truth

  2454. because friends

  2455. that's what

  2456. this word

  2457. is

  2458. it is

  2459. God's

  2460. truth

  2461. it's

  2462. God's

  2463. infallible

  2464. truth

  2465. God's

  2466. authoritative

  2467. truth

  2468. and it's

  2469. in his

  2470. kindness

  2471. that he

  2472. has given

  2473. it to

  2474. us

  2475. we are

  2476. not to be

  2477. hearers

  2478. only

  2479. though we

  2480. are to be

  2481. intent

  2482. hearers

  2483. we are

  2484. to be

  2485. doers of

  2486. the word

  2487. and not

  2488. hearers

  2489. only

  2490. we are

  2491. to let

  2492. the word

  2493. be our

  2494. constant

  2495. companion

  2496. so that

  2497. by living

  2498. fruitful

  2499. lives

  2500. and this

  2501. is James

  2502. O'er

  2503. writing

  2504. concern

  2505. as it

  2506. is

  2507. with

  2508. all

  2509. epistles

  2510. we will

  2511. bring

  2512. glory

  2513. and

  2514. honour

  2515. and

  2516. praise

  2517. to our

  2518. God

  2519. may these

  2520. words be

  2521. blessed to

  2522. us

  2523. we're going

  2524. to conclude

  2525. now by

  2526. singing

  2527. once again

  2528. to God's

  2529. praise

  2530. in Psalm

  2531. 119

  2532. this time

  2533. it's from

  2534. the Scottish

  2535. Psalter

  2536. on page

  2537. 167

  2538. verses

  2539. beginning

  2540. at 161

  2541. and that's

  2542. section 4

  2543. verses

  2544. to tune

  2545. Rockingham

  2546. though rulers

  2547. hound me

  2548. without cause

  2549. my heart

  2550. fears nothing

  2551. but your

  2552. word

  2553. for in your

  2554. promise I

  2555. rejoice

  2556. like one

  2557. who finds

  2558. great spoil

  2559. O Lord

  2560. all false

  2561. who die

  2562. a poor

  2563. and hate

  2564. with all

  2565. my heart

  2566. I love

  2567. your law

  2568. I praise

  2569. you seven

  2570. times a

  2571. day

  2572. for your

  2573. commands

  2574. I hold

  2575. in all

  2576. so these

  2577. four verses

  2578. from verse

  2579. 161

  2580. on page

  2581. 167

  2582. though rulers

  2583. hound me

  2584. without cause

  2585. for you

  2586. for you

  2587. that

  2588. have

  2589. me

  2590. with

  2591. that

  2592. thoughts

  2593. my heart

  2594. fears

  2595. nothing

  2596. but

  2597. your

  2598. word

  2599. for in

  2600. your

  2601. promise

  2602. I

  2603. rejoice

  2604. like

  2605. one

  2606. who

  2607. finds

  2608. this

  2609. spoil

  2610. O Lord

  2611. out

  2612. What

  2613. Ham

2614. I am old and late, with all my heart I love you all.

2615. I praise you seven times a day, for your commands I hold in all.
