  1. Let's begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise in Psalm 146.

  2. It's in the Scottish Psalter version. Psalm 146, page 445.

  3. And we're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  4. Psalm 146. Praise God. The Lord praise, O my soul.

  5. I'll praise God while I live, while I have being.

  6. To my God in songs I'll praises give.

  7. Trust not in princes nor man's son, in whom there is no state.

  8. His breath departs, to earth he turns. That day his thoughts decay.

  9. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 7 to God's praise.

  10. Praise God the Lord. Praise, O my soul.

  11. I'll praise God while I live, while I have being.

  12. To my God in songs I'll praises give.

  13. Trust not in princes nor man's son, in whom there is no state.

  14. His breath departs, to earth he turns.

  15. That day his thoughts decay.

  16. O happy is that man unblessed, whom Jacob's God doth hate.

  17. Whose hope upon the Lord doth rest, and on his God his state.

  18. Who made the earth and heaven's eye.

  19. Who made the swelling deep.

  20. And all that is within the same.

  21. Who truth doth ever keep.

  22. Who righteous judgment executes.

  23. For those oppressed that be.

  24. Who to the hungry giveth food.

  25. God sets the prisoners free.

  26. Let's come to God in prayer.

  27. We'll bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  28. Lord our gracious God, as we gather in your name anew this evening,

  29. we are thankful for the blessing of praising your name.

  30. The blessing for being able to lift our voices to you in song and to rejoice in your goodness to us.

  31. We thank you that we have been reminded in this psalm of the man who is blessed, whom Jacob's God doth aid.

  32. And we thank you for every way, Lord, that you help us on a daily basis.

  33. That we can lean upon you.

  34. That we can find our rest in you.

  35. And we thank you, Lord, for your upholding strength toward us.

  36. We thank you that as we come to your word anew this evening,

  37. that we are reminded through it that the joy of the Lord is indeed the strength of your people.

  38. And that that is not when we feel strong, but so often in our weakness, Lord, that joy is what sustains us.

  39. For you remind us that apart from you, we can do nothing.

  40. And so we praise you as the God who made heavens and earth,

  41. made the swelling deep, as the psalmist describes.

  42. And yet your truth is constantly with us too.

  43. And we thank you for every reminder you give to us of your power and of your goodness towards us.

  44. That as we see the wonder of your creation, as we see the seasons changing,

  45. even at this time of year, as we see the days growing longer, we see the signs of spring.

  46. We see new growth around us, Lord, as we see flowers begin to appear.

  47. And we thank you, Lord, that it reminds us of the wonder of the creation,

  48. but the wonder of you as the God of it all.

  49. That when there is a time when things seem dead and lifeless,

  50. that even underneath, Lord, there is the signs of hope.

  51. That there is life, that life that comes to fruition.

  52. And we see it in our own world and in our own day at this time.

  53. And we think of the deadness of the world in the spiritual sense.

  54. When we think of how we have put your word behind our back, as it were,

  55. and turned away from you.

  56. When we see, oh Lord, people just living for self and for their own gain.

  57. No thought for others or for you.

  58. We, oh Lord, are in pain and grief over this.

  59. As we think, oh Lord, of what it means for us as a people,

  60. and what it means for those who are a people who are perishing,

  61. as your word describes.

  62. But yet we thank you for the gospel.

  63. We thank you for the hope that that gives of new life.

  64. We thank you for the power that is in it to revive and to give life anew through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  65. The one who came that we might have life and have it abundantly.

  66. And so we pray that your word will be blessed to us all here this evening.

  67. That we would, as we heard this morning, not just hear your word, but be doers of it.

  68. That we would receive your word with gladness and joy and go into the week ahead,

  69. renewed by your spirit, refreshed by your word.

  70. Eager, oh Lord, to live for you and to serve you as your people here.

  71. We pray, Lord, that your word will be blessed to all ends of the earth today,

  72. as we thank you that you are not the God who is confined as so many of the gods of this world,

  73. made by the hands of men and women,

  74. made by us to represent what we see as worthy of glory.

  75. But we thank you that your glory is far and wide,

  76. that you are worthy of the praise of all of your people, near and far,

  77. and that you have your people throughout the nations of this world,

  78. people who call on your name, people who worship and praise you,

  79. people who, even as we are praying, that you are hearing their prayers as well,

  80. that you hear a people who call upon you at all times, day or night.

  81. And so we ask, oh Lord, that you would send out your power into our midst,

  82. the power of the gospel, what the psalmist describes as your light and your truth,

  83. that they would go out to all ends of the earth,

  84. directing people to you, reviving people who are dead in sin,

  85. and bringing us all to praise your name all the more.

  86. Bless us as we consider your word together here this evening,

  87. as we open it up, as we read it.

  88. May your spirit help us in our understanding of it,

  89. and may you guide us through it in all our thoughts,

  90. and what it means to us, oh Lord, as our people.

  91. It may be that it means something different to each and every one of us,

  92. but may there be a word to be heard from you this evening for each one of us,

  93. a word in season, a word to bless, to challenge, to encourage, to do us good.

  94. We thank you for all we've enjoyed from your word in this past week as well.

  95. As we look back to time of communion last weekend,

  96. we thank you for the blessings that we've received from your hand there,

  97. being under the preaching of your word,

  98. enjoying the sacrament together,

  99. and the fellowship of your people together as well.

  100. We thank you for all that was done for us, Lord, for our good,

  101. and we pray that we will continue to be encouraged going forward.

  102. We will not lose sight of the hope of the gospel,

  103. and we continue to pray for your blessing over us as a people,

  104. homes and families in all our communities.

  105. And this communion season throughout our islands, oh Lord,

  106. we pray blessing on all who gather in your name in these days,

  107. to know the power of your spirit working,

  108. to know people coming to profess the Lord as their saviour,

  109. people growing in their knowledge of you and understanding of you,

  110. people being encouraged in so many different ways.

  111. We ask, oh Lord, that you would continue to build your church in our midst

  112. and to make us as a people, Lord,

  113. a people who would be full of your joy and your strength.

  114. We pray for our nation at this time, oh Lord,

  115. we ask for our leaders, our governments,

  116. that you will help and encourage them in their day-to-day lives of administering direction for our nation.

  117. Lord, we feel a drifting away from you,

  118. but we know, even as we read in the scriptures of the times when nations were in disarray,

  119. turning away from you with no sense of direction,

  120. that you are pleased in the past to come in your power and to redirect them towards you.

  121. We pray that for our own nation, oh Lord,

  122. to know that redirecting, that renewal that comes from you.

  123. We pray that for all who are involved in governments nationally and locally as well,

  124. Lord, to give the fear of the Lord as the beginning of all wisdom,

  125. to give them that sense of dependence upon you.

  126. Remember to our royal family,

  127. we pray for each one of them,

  128. and remember the king just now as he continues to go through treatment for his own time of ill health,

  129. and that your hand be upon him to bless him and his family too.

  130. And again, that they would rule with you in mind in all things.

  131. There may be kings in this world and presidents and powers and authorities,

  132. but we know that they are all from your hand.

  133. And we pray, Lord, for you to rule above all

  134. and to rule in a way that would bring wisdom and help to our world as a whole,

  135. to bring peace with this conflict,

  136. to bring peace with this persecution,

  137. to bring a people to yourself.

  138. Remember us then in all of these things.

  139. Remember us in the week ahead as a people here.

  140. Lord, bless the Youth Fellowship as they will meet this evening.

  141. Bless all that takes place throughout the week,

  142. the meetings for prayer,

  143. the work among the young people,

  144. and all that we do in your name, Lord,

  145. to share the gospel.

  146. May it be that you hear us

  147. and receive us in all of these things

  148. and show us your hand,

  149. your hand of power,

  150. working mightily in our midst.

  151. So continue with us now, Lord,

  152. help us as we sing your praise

  153. and hear your word,

  154. do all with all of our hearts,

  155. to lift our voices to you

  156. as our Lord,

  157. as our King,

  158. as our Saviour,

  159. as our Redeemer,

  160. the one to whom we look even at this time

  161. for forgiveness for all our sins,

  162. as we come anew,

  163. confessing our thoughts,

  164. words,

  165. and actions that are so often against you,

  166. Lord.

  167. We pray your pardon towards us.

  168. Hear our prayers,

  169. Lord,

  170. continue with us,

  171. and we ask all in the precious name

  172. of our Redeemer,

  173. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  174. for his sake and glory.

  175. Amen.

  176. Amen.

  177. We'll again sing to God's praise,

  178. this time in Psalm 106,

  179. in the Scottish Psalter,

  180. page 378.

  181. Psalm 106,

  182. we'll sing from verse 1 to verse 6.

  183. Give praise and thanks unto the Lord,

  184. for bountiful is he,

  185. his tender mercy doth endure,

  186. and to eternity.

  187. God's mighty works,

  188. who can express,

  189. or show forth all his praise.

  190. Blessed are they,

  191. that judgment keep,

  192. and justly do always.

  193. We'll sing from verse 1 to 6,

  194. to God's praise.

  195. Give praise and thanks unto the Lord,

  196. for bountiful is he,

  197. His tender mercy doth endure,

  198. and to eternity.

  199. God's mighty works,

  200. God's mighty works,

  201. who can express,

  202. or show forth all his praise.

  203. Blessed are they,

  204. that judgment keep,

  205. and justly do always.

  206. Remember me, Lord,

  207. with that love,

  208. which thou to thy dust bear.

  209. with thy salvation,

  210. O my God,

  211. to visit me draw near,

  212. that I thy chosen's good may see,

  213. and in their joy rejoice,

  214. and may with thine inheritance

  215. triumph with cheerful voice.

  216. We with our Father sinned,

  217. have and of iniquity.

  218. Too long we have the workers been,

  219. we have done wickedly.

  220. We can turn to read together now

  221. in the Old Testament.

  222. We're turning back to the book of Nehemiah.

  223. This evening we're going to be in chapter 9,

  224. as we continue our study in this book.

  225. It's Nehemiah chapter 9.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  226. You notice it's quite a long chapter,

  227. and really what it is,

  228. is a prayer that the people are offering up,

  229. and that's what we're going to be looking at this evening.

  230. We're not going to read through it all.

  231. We'll read from verse 1 down to verse 17,

  232. and then we'll jump forward to verse 30,

  233. and read down to the end of the chapter.

  234. So Nehemiah chapter 9,

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  235. the beginning of the chapter.

  236. Now on the 24th day of this month,

  237. the people of Israel were assembled,

  238. with fasting and in sackcloth,

  239. and with earth on their heads.

  240. And the Israelites separated themselves

  241. from all foreigners,

  242. and stood and confessed their sins,

  243. and the iniquities of their fathers.

  244. And they stood up in their place,

  245. and read from the book of the law of the Lord,

  246. their God,

  247. for a quarter of the day.

  248. For another quarter of it,

  249. they made confession and worshipped their God.

  250. On the stairs of the Levites stood

  251. to Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel,

  252. Shebaniah, Bani,

  253. Sherebiah, Bani, and Cheniah.

  254. And they cried with a loud voice

  255. to the Lord, their God.

  256. Then the Levites,

  257. Jeshua, Kadmiel,

  258. Bani,

  259. Ahashebaniah,

  260. Sherebiah,

  261. Hodiah,

  262. Shebaniah,

  263. and Pethathaniah,

  264. said,

  265. Stand up and bless the Lord your God

  266. from everlasting to everlasting.

  267. Blessed be your glorious name,

  268. which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

  269. You are the Lord,

  270. you alone.

  271. You have made heaven,

  272. the heaven of heavens,

  273. with all their host,

  274. the earth and all that is on it,

  275. the seas and all that is in them.

  276. And you preserve all of them.

  277. And the host of heaven worships you.

  278. You are the Lord,

  279. the God who chose Abraham

  280. and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans

  281. and gave him the name Abraham.

  282. You found his heart faithful before you

  283. and made with him the covenant

  284. to give to his offspring

  285. the land of the Canaanite,

  286. the Hittite,

  287. the Amorite,

  288. the Perisite,

  289. the Jebusite,

  290. and the Girgashite.

  291. And you have kept your promise,

  292. for you are righteous.

  293. And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt

  294. and heard their cry at the Red Sea

  295. and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh

  296. and all his servants and all the people of his land,

  297. for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers.

  298. And you made a name for yourself,

  299. as it is to this day.

  300. And you divided the sea before them,

  301. so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land.

  302. And you cast their pursuers into the depths

  303. as a stone into mighty waters.

  304. By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day

  305. and by a pillar of fire in the night

  306. to light for them the way in which they should go.

  307. You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven

  308. and gave them right rules and true laws,

  309. good statutes and commandments.

  310. And you made known to them your holy Sabbath

  311. and commanded them commandments and statutes

  312. and a law by Moses your servant.

  313. You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger

  314. and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst.

  315. And you told them to go in to possess the land

  316. that you had sworn to give them.

  317. But they and our fathers acted presumptuously

  318. and stiffened their neck

  319. and did not obey your commandments.

  320. They refused to obey

  321. and were not mindful of the wonders

  322. that you performed among them,

  323. but they stiffened their neck

  324. and appointed a leader to return

  325. to their slavery in Egypt.

  326. But you are a God ready to forgive,

  327. gracious and merciful,

  328. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love

  329. and did not forsake them.

  330. And the next number of verses there carry on

  331. going through the various times

  332. of the children of Israel

  333. as they made their way through

  334. to the promised land.

  335. It speaks of their rebellion

  336. and their disobedience along the way.

  337. But what we see time and again

  338. is the wonder of the grace of God.

  339. And we take up our reading at verse 30.

  340. For many years you bore with them

  341. and warned them by your spirit

  342. through your prophets,

  343. yet they would not give ear.

  344. Therefore you gave them into the hand

  345. of the peoples of the lands.

  346. Nevertheless, in your great mercies,

  347. you did not make an end of them

  348. or forsake them,

  349. for you are a gracious and merciful God.

  350. Now, therefore, our God,

  351. the great, the mighty, and the awesome God,

  352. who keeps covenant and steadfast love,

  353. let not all the hardship seem little to you

  354. that has come upon us,

  355. upon our kings, our princes,

  356. our priests, our prophets,

  357. our fathers, and all your people,

  358. since the time of the kings of Assyria

  359. until this day.

  360. Yet you have been righteous

  361. in all that has come upon us,

  362. for you have dealt faithfully,

  363. and we have acted wickedly.

  364. Our kings, our princes,

  365. our priests, and our fathers

  366. have not kept your law

  367. or paid attention

  368. to your commandments

  369. and your warnings that you gave them,

  370. even in their own kingdom,

  371. enjoying your great goodness

  372. that you gave them,

  373. and in the large and rich land

  374. that you set before them.

  375. They did not serve you

  376. or turn from their wicked works.

  377. Behold, we are slaves this day

  378. in the land that you gave to our fathers

  379. to enjoy its fruit

  380. and its good gifts.

  381. Behold, we are slaves,

  382. and its rich yield goes to the kings

  383. whom you have set over us

  384. because of our sins.

  385. They rule over our bodies

  386. and over our livestock

  387. as they please,

  388. and we are in great distress.

  389. Because of all this,

  390. we make a firm covenant in writing.

  391. On the sealed document

  392. are the names of our princes,

  393. our Levites,

  394. and our priests,

  395. and so on.

  396. And may God bless that reading

  397. from his word.

  398. Before we turn back to this passage,

  399. we're going to sing again

  400. to God's praise in Psalm 103,

  401. and we'll sing Psalm's version,

  402. Psalm 103,

  403. and we'll sing from verse 1

  404. down to verse 11.

  405. Praise God, my soul,

  406. with all my heart.

  407. Let me exalt his holy name.

  408. Forget not all his benefits,

  409. as praise my soul

  410. in song proclaim.

  411. The Lord forgives you all your sins

  412. and heals your sickness

  413. and distress.

  414. Your life,

  415. he rescues from the grave

  416. and crowns you in his tenderness.

  417. We'll sing from verse 1 to 11,

  418. Psalm 103,

  419. to God's praise.

  420. Praise God, my soul,

  421. with all my heart.

  422. Let me exalt his holy name.

  423. Forget not all his benefits,

  424. his praise my soul

  425. in song proclaim.

  426. The Lord forgives you

  427. all your sins

  428. and heals your sickness

  429. and distress.

  430. Your life,

  431. he rescues from the grave.

  432. and crowns you

  433. in his tenderness.

  434. And crowns you

  435. in his tenderness.

  436. He satisfies your deep desires

  437. from his unending storage of good,

  438. so that just like the eagle's strength,

  439. your youthful vigor is renewed.

  440. The Lord is known for righteous acts,

  441. and justice to them,

  442. broadened ones.

  443. To Moses he made known his ways,

  444. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  445. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  446. The Lord is merciful and kind,

  447. to anger slow and full of grace.

  448. He will not constantly reprove,

  449. or in his anger and his face.

  450. He does not punish her misdeeds,

  451. or give her sins their just reward.

  452. How great is love as high as him

  453. towards all those who fear the Lord.

  454. Towards all those who fear the Lord.

  455. We can turn back to our reading

  456. in Nehemiah chapter 9.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  457. I'm just going to pick out a few verses

  458. throughout the chapter

  459. just to show us where we're going this evening.

  460. Verse 6, first of all,

  461. where the people are praising God,

  462. and they say there,

  463. you are the Lord,

  464. you alone.

  465. You have made heaven,

  466. the heaven of heavens,

  467. with all their host,

  468. the earth and all that is on it,

  469. and so on.

  470. You are the Lord,

  471. you alone.

  472. Then in verse 17,

  473. we see how the people refused to obey.

  474. It says they refused to obey

  475. and were not mindful of the wonders

  476. that you performed among them,

  477. but they stiffened their neck

  478. and appointed a leader

  479. to return to their slavery in Egypt.

  480. But you are a God,

  481. ready to forgive,

  482. gracious and merciful,

  483. slow to anger,

  484. and abounding in steadfast love.

  485. People disobeyed,

  486. and yet God is still gracious

  487. and slow to anger.

  488. Verse 26,

  489. there it says,

  490. nevertheless,

  491. they were disobedient

  492. and rebelled against you,

  493. and cast your law behind their back,

  494. and killed your prophets

  495. who had warned them

  496. in order to turn them back to you.

  497. So again,

  498. we see the rebellion of the people,

  499. putting the law,

  500. turning away from the law of God.

  501. And then we go down to verse 30.

  502. For many years you bore with them

  503. and warned them

  504. by your spirit through your prophets,

  505. yet they would not give ear.

  506. Therefore you gave them

  507. into the hand of the peoples

  508. of the lands.

  509. Nevertheless,

  510. in your great mercies,

  511. you did not make an end of them

  512. or forsake them,

  513. for you are a gracious

  514. and merciful God.

  515. I'm sure it surprises you

  516. as it surprises me so often

  517. just how patient

  518. God is with us all,

  519. how long-suffering he is

  520. despite all that we do

  521. amiss towards him,

  522. despite the way we so often

  523. treat him

  524. and are cold towards him.

  525. The Lord's mercies

  526. are still there for us.

  527. And that's a powerful reminder

  528. that we have throughout

  529. this chapter

  530. that we're studying together

  531. this evening

  532. as Nehemiah and Ezra

  533. and the people

  534. are gathered together.

  535. Here they are gathered

  536. around the word of God

  537. once again

  538. and they're hearing

  539. over a long period of time

  540. just how faithful

  541. God has been

  542. and even in the midst

  543. of their disobedience,

  544. how often he has shown

  545. mercy and graciousness

  546. towards them.

  547. Nehemiah came to Jerusalem

  548. as a leader for the people

  549. but where was he leading them to?

  550. Or to what end

  551. was he leading them?

  552. As we've gone through

  553. this wonderful book

  554. we've seen how he came

  555. and found a city

  556. that was in disarray

  557. in so many ways.

  558. The walls were in ruin,

  559. the people were in distress,

  560. they were in trouble.

  561. There wasn't much hope for them

  562. and so he came

  563. to rebuild the walls

  564. and we've seen

  565. how that was done

  566. and how that was completed

  567. but that was not the end

  568. because from the moment

  569. that Nehemiah

  570. had this great burden

  571. from God

  572. for the people of Jerusalem

  573. the burden was not just

  574. for rebuilding the walls.

  575. That was just a part.

  576. The burden was for the people.

  577. And that was a burden

  578. that was not going to end

  579. with a city that was rebuilt.

  580. That burden for the people

  581. was not going to come to an end

  582. until the people were walking

  583. in the right way with God

  584. because that was his ultimate aim

  585. to relieve the trouble,

  586. the distress that they were in.

  587. And the greatest distress,

  588. the greatest trouble they were in

  589. was their relationship with God.

  590. The relationship that had broken down,

  591. the relationship that had led to them

  592. being taken into captivity

  593. in the first place,

  594. the reason why the walls

  595. were in disarray,

  596. the reason why the people felt hopeless,

  597. the relationship with God

  598. had broken down.

  599. And so his ultimate aim

  600. was to restore Jerusalem

  601. and God's people

  602. as a people of worship,

  603. worshiping a holy God

  604. and having his joy

  605. in their hearts.

  606. And as we looked at the last time

  607. in this book,

  608. chapter 8 was a high point.

  609. Chapter 8 was a point

  610. where we see

  611. the people gathered together.

  612. The wall had been completed.

  613. They were gathered around

  614. the word of God

  615. and it brought tears

  616. to their eyes.

  617. They were weeping,

  618. weeping with sorrow

  619. over all that it meant,

  620. all that they had done

  621. against God.

  622. But they were told

  623. that this was not a time

  624. to mourn and to weep.

  625. This was a time to rejoice,

  626. to rejoice in the joy of the Lord

  627. as their strength.

  628. The joy of the Lord

  629. was their strength.

  630. And what a wonderful blessing

  631. it was for them

  632. to know the Lord

  633. had not turned

  634. his back on them

  635. and that they could rejoice

  636. in this.

  637. And they did rejoice.

  638. They enjoyed a feast.

  639. They enjoyed a time

  640. of feasting that went on

  641. for a number of weeks.

  642. In chapter 8,

  643. as it continues,

  644. you find the feast of booths

  645. celebrated there.

  646. A feast that went on

  647. probably for around

  648. three weeks.

  649. And now as you come

  650. into chapter 9,

  651. that feast has ended.

  652. And just a few days later,

  653. they're gathering again together

  654. around the Word of God.

  655. So they had this high point

  656. in chapter 8.

  657. They had this moment of joy

  658. and rejoicing in the Lord

  659. as the joy of the Lord

  660. is their strength.

  661. But then as you come

  662. into chapter 9,

  663. you find it's quite

  664. a different environment.

  665. Again,

  666. the people of Israel,

  667. they're coming

  668. to confess

  669. their sin.

  670. There's a sense

  671. of mourning

  672. once again.

  673. And it's a great reminder

  674. to us

  675. that this is the way

  676. our lives

  677. so often are.

  678. There are

  679. high points,

  680. high experiences

  681. in our lives

  682. and in the Christian life

  683. especially.

  684. There are high points

  685. in our life,

  686. but the majority

  687. of our lives

  688. just the ordinary.

  689. The day-to-day routine.

  690. The day-to-day walking

  691. with God.

  692. And if we just look back

  693. a week,

  694. last weekend,

  695. it often is a high point.

  696. A time of communion

  697. in the congregation.

  698. It's a time of blessing,

  699. a time of fellowship,

  700. a time of being gathered

  701. around God's Word,

  702. a time of feasting together

  703. around God's Word

  704. and in fellowship together,

  705. but we must

  706. come away from it.

  707. We have to come away.

  708. We have to come back

  709. into the ordinary way of life.

  710. So how has the last week

  711. been for you?

  712. How has the last week gone?

  713. We pray we all enjoyed

  714. a high over the weekend,

  715. but how's the ordinary Monday

  716. to Saturday gone since?

  717. How are we going forward?

  718. Well, that's what's of interest

  719. to Nehemiah here as well.

  720. The high point of chapter 8

  721. and the feasting

  722. and rejoicing that there is there.

  723. But now to go forward

  724. in the ordinary.

  725. The day-to-day life.

  726. And how are they going to do that?

  727. How are they going to go forward?

  728. And how do you and I

  729. keep going forward as well?

  730. Well, as we go through chapter 9,

  731. we find that the people

  732. are learning together

  733. what it means to go forward.

  734. How they can learn

  735. from their own experience

  736. and the experiences we see

  737. from generations past as well.

  738. How are they going to go forward?

  739. Well, they're going to learn

  740. lessons from the past.

  741. They're going to look,

  742. as they're praying here

  743. in chapter 9,

  744. they're looking to their fathers,

  745. to the people

  746. in the past generations.

  747. How they've ended up

  748. in a situation of trouble.

  749. What was the cause?

  750. How did they stumble

  751. when God had been

  752. so good to them?

  753. And what can they learn

  754. going forward as well?

  755. Well, they landed in trouble

  756. because they rejected God.

  757. That's what we see

  758. in verse 26.

  759. The generations in the past

  760. says in verse 26,

  761. They were disobedient

  762. and rebelled against you

  763. and cast your law

  764. behind their back.

  765. They killed the prophets,

  766. the ones God had sent

  767. to teach them

  768. in order to bring them back

  769. to him.

  770. So the word of God

  771. that they had rejoiced in

  772. had been taken

  773. and cast away.

  774. It was put behind their back.

  775. They didn't do the word

  776. that they'd heard.

  777. As we were hearing this morning,

  778. they'd heard the word of God,

  779. but they didn't keep applying

  780. the word of God

  781. to their lives.

  782. And yet the wonder of it all

  783. is that again and again,

  784. we're reminded in this passage,

  785. almost a summary of the Old Testament

  786. in many ways,

  787. a summary of how the people

  788. were blessed

  789. and then were disobedient,

  790. but a God who is merciful.

  791. In verse 17,

  792. you have these wonderful words,

  793. But you are a God

  794. ready to forgive,

  795. gracious and merciful,

  796. slow to anger,

  797. and abounding in steadfast love,

  798. and did not forsake them.

  799. Even though they

  800. forsook the word of God

  801. and put it behind them,

  802. God did not forsake them.

  803. And so the people

  804. here now in Nehemiah's day,

  805. they're seeking

  806. to learn their lessons.

  807. They're wanting a renewal

  808. with God,

  809. and that's what's

  810. at the end of the chapter,

  811. in verse 38.

  812. Because of all this,

  813. we make a firm covenant

  814. in writing.

  815. We're wanting this relationship

  816. with God renewed.

  817. Renewed because again,

  818. they know the mercy

  819. of God,

  820. of verse 31.

  821. You did not make

  822. an end of them

  823. or forsake them,

  824. for you are a gracious

  825. and merciful God.

  826. And so for us,

  827. as we seek to go forward,

  828. how can we learn ourselves

  829. from this prayer this evening?

  830. How did the people learn

  831. then,

  832. and how can we learn

  833. ourselves?

  834. Well, there's three things

  835. I want us to take

  836. from this chapter.

  837. First, we see

  838. the Lord of all.

  839. Our eyes have to be fixed

  840. on the Lord

  841. at all times.

  842. And whatever situation,

  843. whatever part of this chapter

  844. you're looking at,

  845. it is all about you,

  846. oh Lord.

  847. You,

  848. oh Lord.

  849. And that's what's got to be

  850. at the heart

  851. of our lives.

  852. But we also see

  853. how the people learn

  854. from past sins.

  855. And the people learn

  856. in their present need.

  857. So we have the Lord of all,

  858. the people's past sins,

  859. and the people's present need.

  860. We have they,

  861. we,

  862. and you,

  863. oh Lord.

  864. And so that's how we

  865. are to go forward

  866. ourselves as well.

  867. First of all,

  868. thinking of

  869. the Lord of all.

  870. The joy of the Lord

  871. is your strength,

  872. they heard in chapter 8.

  873. And what we find

  874. is this flowing

  875. into chapter 9

  876. as well.

  877. Because the joy

  878. of the Lord

  879. is not just

  880. for a moment.

  881. The joy of the Lord

  882. is not just something

  883. for that high point

  884. of chapter 8.

  885. The joy of the Lord

  886. is what is going

  887. to keep them going

  888. in the ordinary

  889. day-to-day life

  890. as well.

  891. And so it flows

  892. into chapter 8

  893. as well.

  894. the days of feasting

  895. that they have enjoyed

  896. together.

  897. They've come to an end,

  898. but they still know

  899. how much they need

  900. the Lord.

  901. And so they find

  902. themselves gathered

  903. around the word

  904. of God.

  905. In verse 1,

  906. on the 24th day

  907. of this month,

  908. the people of Israel

  909. were assembled

  910. with fasting

  911. and in sackcloth

  912. and with earth

  913. on their heads.

  914. So there was a sense

  915. of coming

  916. in repentance

  917. here.

  918. Mourning

  919. over their sin.

  920. Fasting

  921. they're in sackcloth

  922. and with earth

  923. on their heads.

  924. They've separated

  925. themselves

  926. from all the foreigners.

  927. They stood

  928. and they confessed

  929. their sins.

  930. This is still

  931. a time

  932. to rejoice

  933. in the joy

  934. of the Lord

  935. as their strength.

  936. Because it is

  937. the joy of the Lord

  938. as their strength

  939. that helps us

  940. to see our sin

  941. and to repent

  942. from them.

  943. And that is

  944. how they are

  945. going forward.

  946. That's how the people

  947. in the past

  948. failed to go forward.

  949. And that's what

  950. they're seeking

  951. to learn from.

  952. It is the Lord

  953. who is able

  954. to keep them going.

  955. That they need

  956. to see

  957. their dependence

  958. is on

  959. the Lord.

  960. A man called

  961. Leonard Ravenhill

  962. once wrote this.

  963. He said,

  964. the devil

  965. has two major

  966. tricks

  967. with his people.

  968. One is,

  969. you're so good

  970. you don't need

  971. to be saved.

  972. That's one of his tricks.

  973. You're so good

  974. you don't need

  975. to be saved.

  976. The other is,

  977. you're so bad

  978. you can't

  979. be saved.

  980. That's the two tricks

  981. the devil uses.

  982. Leonard Ravenhill

  983. said,

  984. you're so good

  985. you don't need

  986. to be saved

  987. or you're so bad

  988. you can't

  989. be saved.

  990. But what he said

  991. was this,

  992. he's a liar

  993. on both counts.

  994. Because that's not

  995. the way

  996. to go forward.

  997. We can't go forward

  998. thinking we're so good

  999. we don't need

  1000. to be saved.

  1001. We don't need

  1002. the Lord.

  1003. We do.

  1004. But we can't

  1005. go forward

  1006. thinking we're so bad

  1007. the Lord won't

  1008. want us.

  1009. The Lord can't

  1010. save us.

  1011. That's not

  1012. true either.

  1013. To go forward

  1014. we need

  1015. the Lord.

  1016. That's what

  1017. Psalm 84

  1018. makes so

  1019. clear for us

  1020. when it speaks

  1021. in that Psalm

  1022. in verse 6

  1023. about passing

  1024. through Baker's

  1025. veil

  1026. therein do

  1027. dig up wells

  1028. also the rain

  1029. that falleth

  1030. down the pools

  1031. with water

  1032. fills

  1033. the Lord

  1034. with his people

1035. and so at verse 7

  1036. goes on

  1037. so they from

  1038. strength

  1039. unwearied

  1040. go still

  1041. forward

  1042. unto strength

  1043. until in Zion

  1044. they appear

  1045. before the Lord

  1046. at length.

  1047. So they have

  1048. this strength

  1049. that can only

  1050. come from

  1051. the Lord

  1052. and that's

  1053. the way

  1054. for us

  1055. to go forward

  1056. as well.

  1057. And that's

  1058. what this prayer

  1059. in chapter 9

  1060. is all

  1061. about.

  1062. And from

  1063. verse 6

  1064. onwards

  1065. it's really

  1066. the people

  1067. crying out

  1068. to God

  1069. in prayer.

  1070. Prayer as a

  1071. result of

  1072. having heard

  1073. the word

  1074. for three

  1075. hours

  1076. and then

  1077. having

  1078. confession

  1079. and worship

  1080. for three

  1081. hours as well.

  1082. You see that

  1083. in verse 3

  1084. where the

  1085. book of the

  1086. law of the

  1087. Lord

  1088. was read

  1089. for a

  1090. quarter of

  1091. the day

  1092. and for

  1093. another

  1094. quarter of

  1095. the day

  1096. confession

  1097. and worship

  1098. was made

  1099. and then

  1100. they went

  1101. into prayer.

  1102. Can you

  1103. imagine that

  1104. for ourselves

  1105. tonight?

  1106. We've started

  1107. half past

  1108. six.

  1109. We're going

  1110. to read

  1111. God's word

  1112. till half

  1113. past nine.

  1114. Then from

  1115. half past

  1116. nine to

  1117. half past

  1118. midnight

  1119. we're going

  1120. to make

  1121. confession

  1122. and worship

  1123. God

  1124. and then

  1125. we'll start

  1126. to pray.

  1127. Who would

  1128. be with me

  1129. in that?

  1130. Who would

  1131. stay

  1132. six hours

  1133. before we

  1134. come to

  1135. the point

  1136. of actually

  1137. coming to

  1138. pray to

  1139. God?

  1140. But that's

  1141. where the

  1142. people were

  1143. at.

  1144. That's what

  1145. they realized

  1146. they needed.

  1147. They needed

  1148. the Lord

  1149. and it's a

  1150. challenge to

  1151. us.

  1152. How much

  1153. are we

  1154. depending

  1155. on the

  1156. Lord?

  1157. How much

  1158. are we

  1159. coming

  1160. before God

  1161. with that

  1162. sense of

  1163. confession

  1164. and dependence

  1165. on him?

  1166. They've

  1167. heard the

  1168. word of

  1169. God.

  1170. They've

  1171. worshipped

  1172. and made

  1173. confession

  1174. and they

  1175. come to

  1176. him in

  1177. prayer.

  1178. And you

  1179. wonder,

  1180. well,

  1181. what did

  1182. they hear

  1183. in the

  1184. word of

  1185. God that

  1186. brought

  1187. them to

  1188. this

  1189. point?

  1190. Well,

  1191. as you

  1192. see in

  1193. the

  1194. prayer,

  1195. it opens

  1196. up what

  1197. we would

  1198. see as

  1199. Genesis

  1200. through to

  1201. Deuteronomy.

  1202. It's going

  1203. right back

  1204. to the

  1205. beginning,

  1206. to all

  1207. that the

  1208. Lord has

  1209. done for

  1210. his people.

  1211. In verse

  1212. 7,

  1213. you have,

  1214. you are

  1215. the Lord

  1216. who chose.

  1217. In verse

  1218. 9,

  1219. you saw

  1220. the affliction

  1221. of the

  1222. people as

  1223. they were

  1224. in Egypt.

  1225. In verse

  1226. 11,

  1227. as he was

  1228. leading them

  1229. out,

  1230. you divided

  1231. the sea.

  1232. In verse

  1233. 13,

  1234. we have

  1235. the law

  1236. given,

  1237. you came

  1238. down at

  1239. Mount

  1240. Sinai.

  1241. So there's

  1242. here a

  1243. focus on

  1244. the Lord

  1245. who has

  1246. done all

  1247. this.

  1248. A

  1249. dependence

  1250. on him.

  1251. But when

  1252. you go

  1253. back to

  1254. verse 6,

  1255. you find

  1256. there the

  1257. key that

  1258. holds it

  1259. all together.

  1260. Verse 6,

  1261. you are

  1262. the Lord,

  1263. you alone,

  1264. you have

  1265. made heaven,

  1266. the heavens

  1267. of heaven,

  1268. with all

  1269. their host,

  1270. the earth

  1271. and all

  1272. that is on

  1273. it,

  1274. and the

  1275. seas and

  1276. all that

  1277. is in

  1278. them.

  1279. You are

  1280. the Lord.

  1281. And here

  1282. is the

  1283. key to

  1284. our

  1285. understanding

  1286. of who

  1287. he is.

  1288. He has

  1289. made the

  1290. heavens and

  1291. the earth

  1292. and all

  1293. that is

  1294. in them.

  1295. This is

  1296. the God

  1297. of creation.

  1298. This is

  1299. the God

  1300. of Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1301. chapter 1.

  1302. In the

  1303. beginning,

  1304. God

  1305. made all

  1306. things.

  1307. And this

  1308. is the

  1309. key to

  1310. our

  1311. relationship

  1312. with God.

  1313. To see

  1314. him not

  1315. as a

  1316. small

  1317. God,

  1318. as a

  1319. God

  1320. who is

  1321. there

  1322. for

  1323. some

  1324. things,

  1325. but a

  1326. God

  1327. who is

  1328. there

  1329. for all

  1330. things.

  1331. As

  1332. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:3

  1333. 11,

  1334. verse 3

  1335. puts it,

  1336. by faith

  1337. we understand

  1338. that the

  1339. universe was

  1340. created by

  1341. the word

  1342. of God,

  1343. so that

  1344. what is

  1345. seen was

  1346. not made

  1347. out of

  1348. things that

  1349. are visible.

  1350. By faith

  1351. we understand.

  1352. By faith

  1353. we go

  1354. forward.

  1355. And this

  1356. is what

  1357. their

  1358. relationship

  1359. is all

  1360. about.

  1361. They are

  1362. depending

  1363. on God.

  1364. Is this

  1365. the God

  1366. that you

  1367. believe in?

  1368. Is this

  1369. the God

  1370. that you

  1371. see you

  1372. need in

  1373. your life?

  1374. The God

  1375. who holds

  1376. the heaven

  1377. and the

  1378. earth,

  1379. the whole

  1380. universe

  1381. together?

  1382. There's a

  1383. story told

  1384. about Isaac

  1385. Newton

  1386. and he'd

  1387. made a

  1388. replica

  1389. of the

  1390. solar system

  1391. in miniature.

  1392. In the

  1393. centre was

  1394. the sun

  1395. and all

  1396. around it

  1397. was all

  1398. the planets

  1399. and how

  1400. they were

  1401. revolving

  1402. around the

  1403. sun.

  1404. This was

  1405. in a

  1406. study and

  1407. another

  1408. scientist

  1409. came into

  1410. his study

  1411. and saw

  1412. this model

  1413. and marveled

  1414. at it

  1415. and said

  1416. who made

  1417. this?

  1418. And Isaac

  1419. Newton

  1420. replied

  1421. saying

  1422. nobody.

  1423. And the

  1424. other scientist

  1425. said you

  1426. must think

  1427. I'm a

  1428. fool.

  1429. Of course

  1430. somebody

  1431. made it.

  1432. Now tell

  1433. me who

  1434. made it?

  1435. It must

  1436. be a

  1437. genius to

  1438. make this

  1439. model and

  1440. how it

  1441. works

  1442. together.

  1443. Isaac

  1444. Newton

  1445. got up

  1446. of his

  1447. chair and

  1448. went over

  1449. to his

  1450. friend the

  1451. other

  1452. scientist

  1453. and said

  1454. this is

  1455. just a

  1456. tiny

  1457. imitation

  1458. of a

  1459. much

  1460. grander

  1461. solar

  1462. system

  1463. whose

  1464. laws

  1465. and logic

  1466. you and

  1467. I know

  1468. all about

  1469. and I

  1470. cannot

  1471. convince

  1472. you

  1473. that this

  1474. mere

  1475. model

  1476. has no

  1477. designer

  1478. or maker

  1479. and yet

  1480. you profess

  1481. that the

  1482. original

  1483. from which

  1484. this model

  1485. is taken

  1486. has no

  1487. creator

  1488. or designer

  1489. or maker.

  1490. The model

  1491. that was

  1492. so tiny

  1493. must have

  1494. a maker.

  1495. but the

  1496. real

  1497. thing

  1498. the

  1499. heaven

  1500. the

  1501. earth

  1502. the

  1503. moon

  1504. the

  1505. stars

  1506. and all

  1507. of these

  1508. things

  1509. there's

  1510. no

  1511. maker.

  1512. He's

  1513. saying

  1514. where's

  1515. the logic

  1516. in that?

  1517. But that's

  1518. what we see

  1519. as we look

  1520. to the

  1521. word of

  1522. God.

  1523. You are

  1524. the Lord

  1525. you alone

  1526. you have

  1527. made heaven

  1528. the heaven

  1529. of heavens

  1530. and all

  1531. of its

  1532. host

  1533. everything

  1534. is made

  1535. by God

  1536. and this

  1537. is the

  1538. God

  1539. that the

  1540. people

  1541. are looking

  1542. to

  1543. and depending

  1544. on

  1545. to go

  1546. forward.

  1547. The question

  1548. is that

  1549. our God

  1550. as we

  1551. seek

  1552. to go

  1553. forward

  1554. ourselves.

  1555. So there

  1556. is God

  1557. over all.

  1558. You

  1559. oh Lord

  1560. have done

  1561. so much

  1562. for us.

  1563. But then

  1564. the focus

  1565. secondly

  1566. here is

  1567. the

  1568. people's

  1569. past

  1570. sin.

  1571. When we

  1572. think of

  1573. moving

  1574. forward

  1575. we always

  1576. have to

  1577. learn

  1578. from the

  1579. past

  1580. whether

  1581. that's

  1582. good

  1583. or bad.

  1584. Nehemiah

  1585. as a

  1586. book

  1587. as a

  1588. whole

  1589. is all

  1590. about

  1591. renewal.

  1592. The

  1593. renewal

  1594. of the

  1595. wall.

  1596. The

  1597. renewal

  1598. of their

  1599. lives

  1600. and as

  1601. we will

  1602. see

  1603. God

  1604. willing

  1605. later

  1606. the

  1607. renewal

  1608. of their

  1609. relationship

  1610. their

  1611. covenant

  1612. relationship

  1613. with

  1614. God.

  1615. But

  1616. renewal

  1617. always

  1618. entails

  1619. as it

  1620. is

  1621. with

  1622. God's

  1623. people

  1624. repentance.

  1625. We

  1626. cannot

  1627. go

  1628. forward

  1629. without

  1630. repentance.

  1631. We

  1632. cannot

  1633. keep

  1634. going

  1635. without

  1636. repentance.

  1637. And

  1638. this

  1639. means

  1640. a

  1641. realization

  1642. where

  1643. things

  1644. have

  1645. gone

  1646. wrong.

  1647. And

  1648. that

  1649. is

  1650. what

  1651. God's

  1652. word

  1653. does

  1654. for

  1655. us.

  1656. as

  1657. you

  1658. go

  1659. through

  1660. this

  1661. prayer,

  1662. as

  1663. you

  1664. go

  1665. through

  1666. these

  1667. verses,

  1668. the

  1669. people

  1670. are

  1671. confronted

  1672. with

  1673. two

  1674. specific

  1675. things.

  1676. They

  1677. are

  1678. confronted

  1679. with

  1680. who

  1681. God

  1682. is.

  1683. What

  1684. we

  1685. have

  1686. just

  1687. looked

  1688. at,

  1689. you

  1690. O

  1691. Lord,

  1692. are

  1693. the

  1694. one

  1695. who

  1696. has

  1697. made

  1698. all

  1699. things.

  1700. But

  1701. the

  1702. second

  1703. thing

  1704. that

  1705. they

  1706. are

  1707. confronted

  1708. with

  1709. is

  1710. who

  1711. they

  1712. are.

  1713. And

  1714. who

  1715. they

  1716. are

  1717. in

  1718. the

  1719. midst

  1720. of

  1721. all

  1722. of

  1723. this.

  1724. And

  1725. if

  1726. we

  1727. read

  1728. verse

  1729. 30

  1730. and

  1731. 31,

  1732. for

  1733. many

  1734. years

  1735. you

  1736. bore

  1737. with

  1738. them

  1739. and

  1740. warned

  1741. them

  1742. by

  1743. your

  1744. spirit

  1745. through

  1746. your

  1747. prophets,

  1748. yet

  1749. they

  1750. would

  1751. not

  1752. give

  1753. ear,

  1754. therefore

  1755. you

  1756. gave

  1757. them

  1758. into

  1759. the

  1760. hand

  1761. of

  1762. the

  1763. peoples

  1764. of

  1765. the

  1766. lands.

  1767. Nevertheless,

  1768. in

  1769. your

  1770. great

  1771. mercies

  1772. you

  1773. did

  1774. not

  1775. make

  1776. an

  1777. end

  1778. of

  1779. them

  1780. or

  1781. forsake

  1782. them,

  1783. for

  1784. a

  1785. gracious

  1786. and

  1787. merciful

  1788. God.

  1789. It's

  1790. the

  1791. story

  1792. of

  1793. the

  1794. Old

  1795. Testament.

  1796. So

  1797. often

  1798. again

  1799. and

  1800. again

  1801. you

  1802. find

  1803. it

  1804. the

  1805. God

  1806. who

  1807. is

  1808. pursuing

  1809. his

  1810. people,

  1811. the

  1812. God

  1813. who

  1814. is

  1815. showing

  1816. grace

  1817. to

  1818. his

  1819. people,

  1820. a

  1821. people

  1822. who

  1823. so

  1824. often

  1825. aren't

  1826. looking

  1827. for it,

  1828. a

  1829. people

  1830. who

  1831. so

  1832. often

  1833. don't

  1834. deserve

  1835. it,

  1836. a

  1837. people

  1838. so

  1839. often

  1840. resisting

  1841. this

  1842. grace.

  1843. And

  1844. who

  1845. don't

  1846. appreciate

  1847. what

  1848. they

  1849. have.

  1850. And

  1851. yet

  1852. God

  1853. is

  1854. merciful

  1855. and

  1856. gracious

  1857. and

  1858. kind.

  1859. You

  1860. find the

  1861. word

  1862. they

  1863. is

  1864. mentioned

  1865. so

  1866. often

  1867. in the

  1868. prayer.

  1869. As

  1870. they are

  1871. praying,

  1872. they

  1873. turned

  1874. their

  1875. back,

  1876. they

  1877. disobeyed.

  1878. This

  1879. kind of

  1880. looking

  1881. to the

  1882. past,

  1883. it's

  1884. remembering

  1885. the

  1886. journey

  1887. of

  1888. their

  1889. ancestors,

  1890. what

  1891. the

  1892. Lord

  1893. brought

  1894. them

  1895. through.

  1896. Now

  1897. for us

  1898. as we

  1899. would

  1900. come

  1901. to

  1902. this,

  1903. we

  1904. might

  1905. think,

  1906. well,

  1907. it's

  1908. a

  1909. way

  1910. of

  1911. blame.

  1912. They

  1913. went

  1914. wrong,

  1915. not us,

  1916. they

  1917. went

  1918. wrong.

  1919. And

  1920. when we

  1921. think of

  1922. the things

  1923. we've

  1924. done

  1925. ourselves,

  1926. is that

  1927. the

  1928. approach

  1929. that we

  1930. have?

  1931. Blame

  1932. someone

  1933. else.

  1934. Somebody

  1935. else's

  1936. fault.

  1937. We

  1938. look for

  1939. someone

  1940. to

  1941. blame.

  1942. It's

  1943. often

  1944. a

  1945. natural

  1946. reaction.

  1947. You

  1948. can

  1949. think

  1950. of

  1951. many

  1952. different

  1953. things

  1954. you

  1955. could

  1956. blame

  1957. in

  1958. your

  1959. own

  1960. life.

  1961. We

  1962. blame

  1963. a

  1964. generation

  1965. that we

  1966. live in

  1967. that's

  1968. turning

  1969. away

  1970. from

  1971. God.

  1972. We

  1973. can

  1974. blame

  1975. the

  1976. government

  1977. who

  1978. are

  1979. passing

  1980. rules

  1981. that

  1982. go

  1983. against

  1984. the

  1985. laws

  1986. of

  1987. God.

  1988. We

  1989. can

  1990. blame

  1991. an

  1992. upbringing

  1993. perhaps.

  1994. We

  1995. can

  1996. blame

  1997. a

  1998. person.

  1999. They

  2000. they

  2001. they

  2002. it's

  2003. their

  2004. fault.

  2005. But

  2006. that's

  2007. not

  2008. what

  2009. they're

  2010. doing

  2011. here.

  2012. They're

  2013. not

  2014. looking

  2015. to

  2016. the

  2017. past

  2018. here

  2019. and

  2020. blaming

  2021. somebody

  2022. else.

  2023. They

  2024. are

  2025. looking

  2026. at

  2027. they

  2028. as

  2029. what

  2030. they

  2031. are

  2032. too.

  2033. They

  2034. got it

  2035. wrong

  2036. and

  2037. we

  2038. are

  2039. suffering

  2040. too

  2041. because

  2042. we

  2043. get it

  2044. wrong.

  2045. Someone

  2046. spoke

  2047. of our

  2048. generation

  2049. as being

  2050. persuaded

  2051. by the

  2052. weightlessness

  2053. of God.

  2054. Weightlessness.

  2055. I.e.

  2056. there's

  2057. nothing

  2058. to him.

  2059. God

  2060. cannot

  2061. help.

  2062. What the

  2063. people here

  2064. were saying

  2065. was just

  2066. how weighty

  2067. God is.

  2068. How

  2069. great

  2070. God

  2071. is.

  2072. How

  2073. he is

  2074. the

  2075. God,

  2076. the

  2077. only

  2078. God

  2079. who

  2080. can

  2081. help.

  2082. Alistair

  2083. Begg

  2084. recently

  2085. put sin

  2086. like this.

  2087. He said

  2088. our

  2089. sins

  2090. are

  2091. simply

  2092. the

  2093. outward

  2094. manifestation

  2095. of

  2096. our

  2097. personal

  2098. decision

  2099. to

  2100. suppress

  2101. the

  2102. truth

  2103. about

  2104. God

  2105. and

  2106. thereby

  2107. pursue

  2108. whatever

  2109. it is

  2110. that we

  2111. have

  2112. decided

  2113. to put

  2114. in the

  2115. place

  2116. of

  2117. God.

  2118. That's

  2119. what the

  2120. people are

  2121. experiencing

  2122. here.

  2123. They may

  2124. be saying

  2125. they

  2126. got

  2127. wrong

  2128. in the

  2129. past

  2130. but

  2131. they're

  2132. also

  2133. saying

  2134. it's

  2135. our

  2136. sins.

  2137. Our

  2138. sins,

  2139. our

  2140. personal

  2141. decisions

  2142. have

  2143. landed

  2144. us

  2145. in

  2146. this

  2147. too.

  2148. In

  2149. verse

  2150. 26

  2151. where it

  2152. speaks

  2153. about

  2154. they

  2155. put

  2156. the

  2157. law

  2158. behind

  2159. their

  2160. back.

  2161. It's

  2162. exactly

  2163. the

  2164. same

  2165. as

  2166. what

  2167. they

  2168. were

  2169. doing

  2170. as

  2171. well.

  2172. But

  2173. they

  2174. are

  2175. beginning

  2176. to

  2177. realize

  2178. that

  2179. the

  2180. God

  2181. who

  2182. was

  2183. able

  2184. to

  2185. help

  2186. in

  2187. the

  2188. past

  2189. is

  2190. the

  2191. God

  2192. who

  2193. is

  2194. able

  2195. to

  2196. help

  2197. now

  2198. if

  2199. they

  2200. will

  2201. confess

  2202. their

  2203. sins

  2204. and

  2205. turn

  2206. from

  2207. them.

  2208. And

  2209. that

  2210. is

  2211. for

  2212. us

  2213. too.

  2214. The

  2215. God

  2216. who

  2217. has

  2218. helped

  2219. his

  2220. people

  2221. in

  2222. the

  2223. past

  2224. is

  2225. the

  2226. same

  2227. God

  2228. today.

  2229. The

  2230. same

  2231. God

  2232. who

  2233. is

  2234. gracious

  2235. and

  2236. merciful,

  2237. who

  2238. is

  2239. able

  2240. to

  2241. pardon

  2242. all

  2243. our

  2244. sins.

  2245. But we

  2246. must

  2247. confess

  2248. our

  2249. sins.

  2250. The

  2251. things

  2252. that we

  2253. have

  2254. done

  2255. that we

  2256. shouldn't.

  2257. But even

  2258. the things

  2259. that we

  2260. haven't

  2261. done

  2262. that we

  2263. should,

  2264. we need

  2265. to confess

  2266. them

  2267. all.

  2268. There's a

  2269. book called

  2270. Why Prayers

  2271. Are

  2272. Unanswered.

  2273. And in

  2274. this book

  2275. there's a

  2276. story told

  2277. about a

  2278. boy who

  2279. found

  2280. a big

  2281. cigar

  2282. in his

  2283. father's

  2284. house.

  2285. I'm

  2286. sure

  2287. maybe

  2288. many of

  2289. us have

  2290. been in

  2291. this

  2292. situation

  2293. ourselves

  2294. in the

  2295. past.

  2296. He

  2297. took

  2298. the

  2299. cigar,

  2300. slipped

  2301. outside

  2302. down an

  2303. alley,

  2304. and decided

  2305. to light

  2306. it up.

  2307. It

  2308. didn't

  2309. taste

  2310. good,

  2311. but it

  2312. made him

  2313. feel like

  2314. a man.

  2315. It

  2316. made him

  2317. feel

  2318. grown up,

  2319. and so

  2320. he carried

  2321. on puffing

  2322. away on

  2323. it until

  2324. he saw

  2325. his father

  2326. coming.

  2327. And then

  2328. it was

  2329. panic

  2330. stations.

  2331. And he

  2332. quickly hid

  2333. the cigar

  2334. behind his

  2335. back.

  2336. And his

  2337. father was

  2338. coming towards

  2339. him, and

  2340. he was just

  2341. trying to

  2342. act casual.

  2343. But he

  2344. thought, I've

  2345. got to divert

  2346. my father's

  2347. attention away

  2348. from what's

  2349. happening here

  2350. to something

  2351. else.

  2352. And across

  2353. the street

  2354. there was a

  2355. billboard

  2356. advertising a

  2357. circus.

  2358. And so he

  2359. said quickly

  2360. to his

  2361. father,

  2362. Can I go,

  2363. Dad?

  2364. Can I go

  2365. to the

  2366. circus?

  2367. When it

  2368. comes to

  2369. town,

  2370. we should

  2371. both go.

  2372. Well, he

  2373. learned a

  2374. lesson that

  2375. day by

  2376. his father's

  2377. reply.

  2378. He said,

  2379. Son,

  2380. never make

  2381. a request

  2382. at the

  2383. same time

  2384. you're trying

  2385. to hide

  2386. a smoldering

  2387. disobedience.

  2388. The father

  2389. knew what

  2390. was going

  2391. on.

  2392. He couldn't

  2393. hide it

  2394. from his

  2395. father.

  2396. But his

  2397. father knew

  2398. too the

  2399. request that

  2400. he wanted.

  2401. But he

  2402. had to

  2403. deal with

  2404. the

  2405. disobedience

  2406. first.

  2407. And that's

  2408. the way

  2409. our father

  2410. in heaven

  2411. is too.

  2412. We cannot

  2413. come to

  2414. him hiding

  2415. sin behind

  2416. our back.

  2417. We cannot

  2418. keep on

  2419. sinning and

  2420. make a

  2421. request to

  2422. God.

  2423. We need

  2424. to confess

  2425. our sin,

  2426. to bring

  2427. them to

  2428. God in

  2429. order to

  2430. move

  2431. forward.

  2432. The people

  2433. here were

  2434. confessing

  2435. their sins,

  2436. learning from

  2437. the past

  2438. sins of

  2439. the people

  2440. and coming

  2441. to the

  2442. God who

  2443. was able

  2444. to help.

  2445. So the

  2446. final thing

  2447. we want to

  2448. take from

  2449. this chapter

  2450. is the

  2451. people's

  2452. present

  2453. need.

  2454. And it's

  2455. our need

  2456. too.

  2457. You see

  2458. the story

  2459. of the

  2460. people of

  2461. God in

  2462. the past

  2463. that so

  2464. much is

  2465. said of

  2466. in Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  2467. chapter 9

  2468. speaking of

  2469. beginning of

  2470. creation,

  2471. Abraham and

  2472. the covenant,

  2473. children of

  2474. Israel and

  2475. the exodus

  2476. going into

  2477. the promised

  2478. land,

  2479. to the

  2480. people

  2481. present

  2482. in

  2483. Nehemiah's

  2484. day.

  2485. It's the

  2486. same need

  2487. as for

  2488. our day.

  2489. It's our

  2490. need too

  2491. because we

  2492. are all

  2493. part of

  2494. this

  2495. ongoing

  2496. story.

  2497. The

  2498. ongoing

  2499. story of

  2500. God's

  2501. people who

  2502. reject God

  2503. one minute

  2504. but then

  2505. cry for

  2506. help the

  2507. next.

  2508. Throughout

  2509. this prayer

  2510. and throughout

  2511. the scriptures

  2512. you find

  2513. it's this

  2514. back and

  2515. forth.

  2516. Faithfulness

  2517. to God

  2518. one minute

  2519. putting

  2520. his law

  2521. behind her

  2522. back the

  2523. next.

  2524. what we

  2525. need to

  2526. see is

  2527. who God

  2528. is.

  2529. You have

  2530. made

  2531. heaven

  2532. and earth.

  2533. You have

  2534. kept

  2535. your promise.

  2536. You are

  2537. the God

  2538. who is

  2539. ready to

  2540. forgive,

  2541. to hear

  2542. these words

  2543. that would

  2544. bring us

  2545. out of

  2546. hiding

  2547. and bring

  2548. us to

  2549. him.

  2550. Because

  2551. this language

  2552. is familiar

  2553. to us

  2554. all.

  2555. Because we

  2556. are all

  2557. a people

  2558. of

  2559. rebellion.

  2560. We can

  2561. all say

  2562. God

  2563. you have

  2564. been

  2565. faithful.

  2566. I have

  2567. been

  2568. unfaithful.

  2569. You have

  2570. been loving.

  2571. I have

  2572. been lukewarm

  2573. towards you.

  2574. You have

  2575. been committed

  2576. to me

  2577. and I have

  2578. been fickle

  2579. towards you.

  2580. That's the

  2581. story of

  2582. our life.

  2583. It's a

  2584. language that

  2585. is probably

  2586. familiar with

  2587. every one

  2588. of us.

  2589. Myself

  2590. too.

  2591. How God

  2592. is good

  2593. and yet

  2594. we don't

  2595. listen.

  2596. We don't

  2597. deserve

  2598. his mercy.

  2599. And it

  2600. all becomes

  2601. very

  2602. personal.

  2603. And that's

  2604. because that

  2605. is exactly

  2606. what the

  2607. gospel is.

  2608. It is

  2609. personal.

  2610. it is

  2611. between you

  2612. and God.

  2613. It is

  2614. between me

  2615. and God.

  2616. Have you

  2617. and have

  2618. I

  2619. have we

  2620. been a

  2621. people that

  2622. have put

  2623. the law

  2624. of God

  2625. behind our

  2626. back?

  2627. Have you

  2628. have I

  2629. been a

  2630. people

  2631. who have

  2632. sought to

  2633. try and

  2634. hide our

  2635. sins

  2636. behind our

  2637. back?

  2638. Have you

  2639. have I

  2640. been a

  2641. people who

  2642. have thought

  2643. God is

  2644. just weightless?

  2645. God is

  2646. not powerful.

  2647. God

  2648. cannot deal

  2649. with my

  2650. sin.

  2651. What do we

  2652. think of

  2653. when we

  2654. think of

  2655. rebuilding

  2656. and renewal?

  2657. What do

  2658. we need?

  2659. this is

  2660. pointing us

  2661. towards

  2662. what we

  2663. all need

  2664. a

  2665. redeemer

  2666. a

  2667. savior

  2668. one who

  2669. can take

  2670. us out

  2671. of this

  2672. situation

  2673. and into

  2674. a place

  2675. where we

  2676. know

  2677. salvation

  2678. with him.

  2679. We need

  2680. Jesus.

  2681. we need

  2682. him as

  2683. lord and

  2684. redeemer.

  2685. We need

  2686. him as

  2687. the one

  2688. who is

  2689. able to

  2690. renew our

  2691. lives,

  2692. to make

  2693. the difference

  2694. in our

  2695. lives,

  2696. to know

  2697. his

  2698. great

  2699. salvation.

  2700. That is

  2701. what the

  2702. people needed.

  2703. That is

  2704. why they

  2705. come to

  2706. the point

  2707. in verse

  2708. 38,

  2709. well,

  2710. the end

  2711. of verse

  2712. 37,

  2713. we are

  2714. in great

  2715. distress.

  2716. That is

  2717. where they

  2718. are brought

  2719. to.

  2720. That's

  2721. where we

  2722. should be

  2723. brought to

  2724. as well.

  2725. We are

  2726. in great

  2727. distress.

  2728. Because of

  2729. all this,

  2730. we make

  2731. a firm

  2732. covenant

  2733. in writing.

  2734. They return

  2735. to God,

  2736. to the

  2737. God who

  2738. is merciful,

  2739. the God

  2740. who is

  2741. gracious,

  2742. and we

  2743. can come

  2744. to God

  2745. too.

  2746. we can

  2747. come to

  2748. him who

  2749. came to

  2750. give us

  2751. life,

  2752. the one

  2753. who is

  2754. the answer

  2755. to all

  2756. our

  2757. troubles.

  2758. Somebody

  2759. once put

  2760. Jesus'

  2761. life like

  2762. this,

  2763. and how

  2764. he is

  2765. able to

  2766. help us

  2767. in all

  2768. our

  2769. different

  2770. needs.

  2771. It says,

  2772. he began

  2773. his ministry

  2774. by being

  2775. hungry,

  2776. thirsty,

  2777. yet he

  2778. is the

  2779. bread

  2780. of life.

  2781. Jesus

  2782. ended

  2783. his earthly

  2784. ministry

  2785. by being

  2786. thirsty,

  2787. yet he

  2788. is the

  2789. living

  2790. water.

  2791. Jesus

  2792. was weary,

  2793. yet he

  2794. is

  2795. a rest.

  2796. Jesus

  2797. wept,

  2798. yet he

  2799. wipes

  2800. away

  2801. our

  2802. tears.

  2803. sinners.

  2804. Jesus

  2805. was sold

  2806. for 30

  2807. pieces of

  2808. silver,

  2809. yet he

  2810. redeemed

  2811. the world.

  2812. Jesus

  2813. was brought

  2814. as a

  2815. lamb to

  2816. the slaughter,

  2817. yet he

  2818. is the

  2819. good shepherd.

  2820. Jesus

  2821. died,

  2822. yet

  2823. by his

  2824. death,

  2825. he destroyed

  2826. the power

  2827. of death

  2828. and gives

  2829. us

  2830. life.

  2831. We have

  2832. sin

  2833. past,

  2834. we have

  2835. sin

  2836. present,

  2837. we have

  2838. a great

  2839. need,

  2840. but we

  2841. have a

  2842. great

  2843. God,

  2844. for you

  2845. are a

  2846. gracious

  2847. and a

  2848. merciful

  2849. God,

  2850. and that's

  2851. the God

  2852. who we

  2853. want to

  2854. go forward

  2855. with,

  2856. to be

  2857. renewed

  2858. with.

  2859. Nehemiah

  2860. wasn't just

  2861. about walls,

  2862. it was

  2863. about people

  2864. and their

  2865. relationship

  2866. with God,

  2867. that they

  2868. would have

  2869. a fresh

  2870. start with

  2871. their faithful

  2872. God.

  2873. Is that

  2874. our longing

  2875. tonight?

  2876. Is that

  2877. our longing

  2878. day by

  2879. day,

  2880. a fresh

  2881. start,

  2882. to begin

  2883. again,

  2884. because we

  2885. all need

  2886. renewal,

  2887. on a

  2888. daily basis,

  2889. and it's

  2890. available to

  2891. us,

  2892. through

  2893. this

  2894. God.

  2895. So let's

  2896. end today,

  2897. as we

  2898. began this

  2899. morning.

  2900. Let's not

  2901. just be

  2902. hearers of

  2903. the word,

  2904. but let us

  2905. be doers.

  2906. Let us

  2907. hear what

  2908. God is

  2909. saying to

  2910. us,

  2911. to come,

  2912. to confess

  2913. our sin,

  2914. to plead

  2915. with him

  2916. who is

  2917. alone,

  2918. God,

  2919. who made

  2920. the

  2921. heaven and

  2922. the earth

  2923. and all

  2924. that is

  2925. in him,

  2926. who sees

  2927. our sin,

  2928. and yet

  2929. who is a

  2930. God who

  2931. is gracious

  2932. and merciful.

  2933. And may

  2934. we be

  2935. renewed

  2936. in him.

  2937. Let us

  2938. pray.

  2939. our

  2940. Father in

  2941. heaven,

  2942. we rejoice

  2943. in the

  2944. gospel for

  2945. it is a

  2946. story for

  2947. us all

  2948. to hear.

  2949. It's a

  2950. very personal

  2951. story that

  2952. speaks to

  2953. each one

  2954. of us.

  2955. It's not

  2956. just about

  2957. us collectively,

  2958. but individually,

  2959. for you know

  2960. us all by

  2961. name.

  2962. We cannot

  2963. stand before

  2964. you hiding

  2965. anything behind

  2966. our backs,

  2967. for you already

  2968. see it and

  2969. know it.

  2970. but help us

  2971. to come

  2972. confessing our

  2973. sin and

  2974. ready to

  2975. come to

  2976. you in

  2977. order to

  2978. receive the

  2979. blessing that

  2980. it brings,

  2981. to know you

  2982. as a

  2983. gracious and

  2984. merciful God.

  2985. So hear our

  2986. prayers and

  2987. continue with

  2988. us as we

  2989. ask all of

  2990. these things

  2991. in Jesus'

  2992. name.

  2993. Amen.

  2994. We're going

  2995. to conclude

  2996. by singing

  2997. to God's

  2998. praise in

  2999. Psalm 104.

  3000. Psalm 104,

  3001. we sing from

  3002. verse 31 to

  3003. 36 in the

  3004. Singed Psalms

  3005. version,

  3006. page 138.

  3007. May the

  3008. Lord's

  3009. majestic

  3010. glory always

  3011. last and

  3012. never fade.

  3013. May the

  3014. Lord rejoice

  3015. and triumph

  3016. in the works

  3017. that he has

  3018. made.

  3019. When he

  3020. gazes on

  3021. creation,

  3022. earth begins

  3023. to shake

  3024. in fear.

  3025. At his

  3026. touch,

  3027. the mountains

  3028. tremble,

  3029. smoke and

  3030. flames of

  3031. fire appear.

  3032. We'll sing

  3033. these last

  3034. four stanzas

  3035. to God's

  3036. praise.

  3037. praise.

  3038. Amen.

  3039. Amen.

  3040. Amen.

  3041. Amen.

  3042. Amen.

  3043. Amen.

  3044. Amen.

  3045. Amen.

  3046. May the

  3047. Lord's

  3048. majestic

  3049. glory

  3050. always

  3051. last

  3052. and

  3053. never

  3054. fade.

  3055. May the

  3056. Lord

  3057. rejoice

  3058. joy

  3059. and

  3060. triumph

  3061. in the

  3062. works

  3063. that he

  3064. has

  3065. made.

  3066. When

  3067. he

  3068. gives

  3069. his own

  3070. creation,

  3071. earth

  3072. begins

  3073. to shake

  3074. in fear.

  3075. At his

  3076. touch,

  3077. the mountains

  3078. tremble,

  3079. smoke and

  3080. flames of

  3081. fire

  3082. appear.

  3083. To the

  3084. Lord

  3085. throughout

  3086. my

  3087. lifetime,

  3088. to my

  3089. God,

  3090. I will

  3091. sing

  3092. praise.

  3093. May

  3094. my

  3095. meditation

  3096. please

  3097. him,

  3098. as to

  3099. him

  3100. my

  3101. song

  3102. I

  3103. raise.

  3104. But

  3105. may

  3106. sinners

  3107. flee

  3108. before

  3109. him,

  3110. and

  3111. the

  3112. wicked

  3113. be

  3114. no

  3115. more.

  3116. Praise

  3117. be to

  3118. the

  3119. Lord

  3120. Almighty,

  3121. O

  3122. my

  3123. soul

  3124. the

  3125. Lord

  3126. adore.

  3127. After the

  3128. benediction,

  3129. I'll go to

  3130. the door to

  3131. my left.

  3132. We'll close

  3133. with a

  3134. benediction.

  3135. Now may

  3136. grace,

  3137. mercy,

  3138. and peace

  3139. from God,

  3140. Father,

  3141. Son,

  3142. and Holy

  3143. Spirit rest

  3144. upon and

  3145. abide with

  3146. you all now

  3147. and forever

  3148. more.

  3149. Amen.

  3150. Amen.

  3151. Amen.
