  1. Isaiah chapter 50 at verse 4.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  2. I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

  3. As you read through Isaiah, and especially following chapter 40,

  4. you find there's four parts where they're known as the servant songs or the servant poems.

  5. And the verses that we read here in verse 4 through to verse 9 are the third.

  6. It's the third of these servant songs.

  7. And as you read through it, what you find is that Isaiah in his day is looking way in the future to another day

  8. when the servant of the Lord would come.

  9. And you see it there, especially in verse 6 when it speaks about,

  10. I gave my back to those who strike and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard.

  11. And I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

  12. When you look to what Isaiah was seeing there, we find that speaking of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  13. who gave his back, that by his stripes we would be healed.

  14. So here we have the third of these servant songs.

  15. It's most maybe well known, of course, as Isaiah, end of 52 into 53,

  16. where it speaks of a very vivid imagery of how Jesus would suffer.

  17. But we find it here and in the other songs too.

  18. I'm just going to reflect on some of this chapter together this evening

  19. and see what it says to us, a little of the servant that we see here.

  20. I want to begin by asking a question.

  21. If you were to go back to the 28th of February 2020, four years ago today,

  22. and to think, where do I see myself four years from now?

  23. What kind of reply would you have given?

  24. You might think initially about location.

  25. Perhaps you've not moved at all.

  26. Perhaps you're living in the same place you were four years ago.

  27. Or perhaps, I include myself in this, you're in a different place now.

  28. Some of us will have moved during that time.

  29. Others, we maybe think of the work situation that we're in.

  30. Maybe that's changed in that four-year space.

  31. There's many different kinds of answers that we could come to,

  32. maybe when you think of where do I see myself in such and such a time.

  33. But if you go back to the 28th of February 2020,

  34. would the answer have included things like going through a global pandemic,

  35. having come through a period of lockdown,

  36. where the world was almost brought to a standstill,

  37. and then coming out of that to see the last few years

  38. and the turmoil of the world in different places,

  39. our own nation included.

  40. And we think of other parts of the world where there's conflict and war.

  41. We think of natural disasters that we've seen happening on a regular basis.

  42. Would we have been thinking along those lines four years ago?

  43. In many of these things,

  44. they'd have been the furthest thing from our mind.

  45. And yet in God's providence,

  46. we've gone through all of these things.

  47. And in some, we're still going through these things at this time.

  48. And if we go back further to the day of Isaiah,

  49. to the people of God then,

  50. if you'd asked them,

  51. where do you see yourselves in four years' time

  52. prior to them being taken captive by the Assyrian invasion

  53. that took them away from their homeland into a foreign country,

  54. if you'd asked them where would they see themselves in four years' time,

  55. the answer would have been far from being captive in a foreign land

  56. because everything was going well with them.

  57. They were wealthy.

  58. They were prospering.

  59. They were happy in so many ways.

  60. But what was happening was they were forgetting God.

  61. And God, as he has reminded us in these last four years,

  62. that things can change very quickly.

  63. He was about to remind the people of God in Isaiah's day

  64. that things can change very quickly as well.

  65. And so you find the book of Isaiah divided into two,

  66. where you see initially the first 39 chapters

  67. where Isaiah is giving a warning,

  68. a warning for the people to listen,

  69. to heed the warning,

  70. that if they don't turn back to God,

  71. that there are going to be consequences coming upon them.

  72. But then from chapter 40 onwards,

  73. you see the consequences of not listening

  74. and being taken captive.

  75. But the amazing thing is that God speaks.

  76. God still speaks to them.

  77. As he was warning them to listen before they were taken captive,

  78. so he continues to speak to them as they are in captivity.

  79. And he's speaking a word of rescue,

  80. a word of salvation,

  81. a word of one who would come to save.

  82. And especially looking,

  83. as we see in these servant songs,

  84. to one who would ultimately save his people

  85. from all their sins.

  86. And so it's remarkable how even in disobedience,

  87. God shows mercy and continues to speak to us.

  88. But as is always the case,

  89. the question is,

  90. are we listening?

  91. Now when you go back to the early days of the pandemic,

  92. one of the most common Google searches was on prayer

  93. and how to pray.

  94. Because people were worried,

  95. people were anxious,

  96. people were fearful of what was ahead.

  97. But you think,

  98. well, where are we today?

  99. Is there still that same urgency with people?

  100. Is there still that same worry with people

  101. about their lives,

  102. their future,

  103. and ultimately eternity?

  104. That worry seems to have gone.

  105. And with it has a sense of relying

  106. or looking to God gone.

  107. But God has warned us again and again.

  108. The question so often is,

  109. are we listening?

  110. You see that in verse 10 here of chapter 50.

  111. Who among you fears the Lord

  112. and obeys the voice of his servant?

  113. Who is listening?

  114. When you think of what we would want to see in the future,

  115. if you were to see into the future,

  116. what would you want to know?

  117. And what would you do differently as a result?

  118. We might have all the kinds of different ideas

  119. of what we would want to know about the future.

  120. What is the world going to be like?

  121. What are our lives going to be like?

  122. What is going to affect us in this life?

  123. What events are going to come our way?

  124. There's lots of things we would maybe like to know.

  125. But God in his wisdom

  126. doesn't show us many of these things.

  127. And the Old Testament prophets,

  128. you find such as Isaiah,

  129. they were given an insight into the future,

  130. seeing far ahead into the future

  131. of what was going to take place

  132. by God's providence.

  133. But what did they tell the people about?

  134. Do you see them telling about amazing discoveries

  135. that would be made of different lands?

  136. Do you see them speak about how communications would develop

  137. so that you're able to speak to somebody

  138. and see someone on the other side of the world

  139. on your screen and talk to them?

  140. Do you think it's speaking about these remarkable journeys

  141. into space or anything like that

  142. that leaves us fascinated in many ways?

  143. Are these the important things

  144. that the prophets were telling the people about?

  145. All of these things may be amazing in and of themselves,

  146. but there's nothing more amazing

  147. than what the prophets were speaking about.

  148. They pale into insignificance

  149. compared to what Isaiah is speaking about here

  150. and the prophets are speaking about

  151. throughout the Old Testament.

  152. They were speaking about what is vital,

  153. what is crucial,

  154. what is of first importance for us as a people

  155. and what we should truly stand in awe of

  156. and be amazed at.

  157. The very fact that we have turned our back on God,

  158. that we have put God's word behind our back

  159. as we were thinking about on Sunday evening,

  160. how we have rejected God and sinned against God,

  161. and yet that God in his wonderful grace

  162. would send his servant,

  163. his son into this world

  164. to provide for his people,

  165. to provide a saviour.

  166. Do we stand in wonder at that?

  167. When you think of the hymn,

  168. How Great Thou Art,

  169. and the words of that hymn that says,

  170. O Lord my God,

  171. when I in awesome wonder

  172. consider all the worlds

  173. thy hands have made,

  174. but when I think

  175. that God, his son not sparing,

  176. sent him to die,

  177. I scarce can take it in,

  178. that on the cross,

  179. our burden gladly bearing,

  180. he bled and died

  181. to take away our sin.

  182. Do we stand in wonder

  183. at the servant who gave his back for us?

  184. Well, what Isaiah is telling the people here

  185. is urgent for them.

  186. And he's telling it to us as well,

  187. because it's urgent for us

  188. to recognise the one he is speaking about,

  189. to recognise how significant it is for ourselves,

  190. the one who gave his back for us.

  191. And there's three things

  192. just briefly want to take

  193. from this passage about

  194. the servant that it speaks of.

  195. And the first thing is

  196. the servant's word.

  197. Then secondly, we'll see

  198. the servant's obedience.

  199. And then thirdly,

  200. the servant's light.

  201. So the first thing we want to see

  202. is the servant's word.

  203. As Isaiah is writing

  204. to the people here,

  205. it's in the midst of captivity.

  206. Their world had been

  207. turned upside down

  208. in so many ways.

  209. The temple in Jerusalem

  210. had been destroyed.

  211. We've been looking at

  212. Nehemiah,

  213. which would come later on,

  214. although it's different order

  215. if you look at it in the scriptures.

  216. But the years are

  217. Isaiah is writing

  218. before Nehemiah.

  219. So it's prior to Jerusalem

  220. and the people being taken captive

  221. and Jerusalem destroyed.

  222. Nehemiah would be writing

  223. about the restoration.

  224. Well, here Isaiah is writing to them

  225. in the midst of them

  226. being taken captive.

  227. And it's clear

  228. as he's writing to them

  229. that it's because

  230. of their disobedience

  231. that they find themselves

  232. in this situation.

  233. You see that in verse 1

  234. to verse 3.

  235. Just there in the middle

  236. of verse 1.

  237. Or which of my creditors

  238. is it to whom I have sold you?

  239. There's this image

  240. of them being taken away.

  241. Behold, for your iniquities

  242. you were sold.

  243. And for your transgressions

  244. your mother was sent away.

  245. They were taken captive

  246. because of their sins.

  247. But in the midst of this,

  248. the remarkable thing

  249. is the word of God

  250. being given.

  251. And it's a word

  252. of comfort

  253. and a word

  254. of hope.

  255. When you did wrong

  256. in school,

  257. you did something wrong

  258. in school,

  259. you would be told

  260. in no uncertain terms

  261. that what you had done

  262. was wrong.

  263. that it was not acceptable.

  264. But if it was left at that,

  265. you wouldn't really learn

  266. the true lesson.

  267. Because a good teacher

  268. wouldn't just leave it there.

  269. As well as pointing out

  270. what you've done wrong

  271. and how it's unacceptable,

  272. they would seek to put you

  273. on the right path

  274. and the right direction.

  275. A word of rebuke

  276. followed by a word

  277. of direction.

  278. And that's really

  279. what you see here.

  280. God is speaking

  281. through Isaiah

  282. and he shows

  283. both of these sides.

  284. He's reminding them

  285. strongly

  286. with a rebuke

  287. that their sin,

  288. their transgression

  289. has left them

  290. where they are

  291. and where they've

  292. done wrong.

  293. But he's also

  294. speaking to them

  295. in a tender way

  296. as well.

  297. Speaking to them

  298. that they might come back

  299. and listen and go

  300. on the right path

  301. once again.

  302. And what we see here

  303. in verse 4,

  304. it speaks of

  305. the servant's word

  306. to us.

  307. The Lord has given me

  308. the tongue

  309. of those who are taught

  310. that I may know

  311. how to sustain

  312. with a word

  313. him who is weary.

  314. the Lord has given

  315. me the tongue

  316. of those

  317. who are taught.

  318. This is not

  319. just Isaiah speaking.

  320. He is speaking

  321. of the servant

  322. of God.

  323. The one who God

  324. would send

  325. into this world

  326. for his people.

  327. With a tongue

  328. of those

  329. who are taught

  330. that I may

  331. know how to

  332. sustain

  333. with a word

  334. him

  335. who is weary.

  336. He is saying

  337. that God

  338. will send

  339. someone

  340. to come

  341. to his people

  342. with a word

  343. of comfort.

  344. It's not just

  345. for their day.

  346. It's for all

  347. of God's people.

  348. And the most

  349. important thing,

  350. the best gift

  351. that God

  352. could give

  353. apart from his son

  354. is his word.

  355. That he would

  356. speak to his people

  357. despite our sin,

  358. despite our rebellion,

  359. that he has not

  360. turned away

  361. from us.

  362. And God's word

  363. is precious.

  364. And it should

  365. become more

  366. and more precious

  367. to us

  368. day by day

  369. that morning

  370. by morning

  371. we'd be

  372. awoken

  373. by his word.

  374. Stirred up

  375. by his word.

  376. just as a servant

  377. here

  378. is being

  379. stirred up

  380. as well

  381. because he has

  382. the word

  383. that is able

  384. to sustain

  385. the weary.

  386. And we are

  387. to listen

  388. to this word.

  389. And that comfort

  390. is seen here

  391. in verse 4

  392. because we all

  393. feel that sense

  394. of burden

  395. and weariness

  396. in this life.

  397. we all feel

  398. that sense

  399. of lacking

  400. strength,

  401. unable to go

  402. on at times.

  403. But when we

  404. know the Lord

  405. we know

  406. he sent

  407. his servant

  408. for us

  409. who has a word

  410. to sustain us,

  411. who has a word

  412. to keep us.

  413. That Jesus

  414. is the one

  415. who is the word

  416. that became

  417. flesh.

  418. And so

  419. Jesus

  420. came into

  421. this world

  422. that we

  423. would listen

  424. to him.

  425. When you read

  426. in the Gospels

  427. in the New Testament

  428. for example

  429. you have

  430. the time

  431. of the

  432. Transfiguration

  433. in Luke 9

    Luke 9:35

  434. verse 35

  435. when the Lord

  436. God the Father

  437. speaks in the

  438. clouds saying

  439. this is my

  440. son,

  441. my chosen

  442. one.

  443. Listen

  444. to him.

  445. Listen

  446. to him.

  447. And what does

  448. Jesus have to

  449. say as he

  450. speaks?

  451. Verses like

  452. Matthew 11

    Matthew 11:28

  453. verse 28

  454. Come to me

  455. all who

  456. labor and are

  457. heavy laden

  458. all who are

  459. weary

  460. and I will

  461. give you

  462. rest.

  463. The servant's

  464. word.

  465. He has a

  466. word to speak

  467. that sustains

  468. him who

  469. is weary.

  470. That is the

  471. wonder of

  472. the God

  473. we have.

  474. The servant's

  475. word.

  476. The second

  477. thing we see

  478. here is the

  479. servant's

  480. obedience.

  481. He was

  482. skilled in

  483. God's word

  484. but submissive

  485. to God's

  486. will.

  487. In verse

  488. 5

  489. the Lord

  490. the Lord

  491. God has

  492. opened my

  493. ear and

  494. I was

  495. not

  496. rebellious.

  497. I

  498. turned not

  499. backwards.

  500. I gave

  501. my back

  502. to those

  503. who strike

  504. and my

  505. cheeks to

  506. those who

  507. pull out

  508. the beard.

  509. I hid

  510. not my

  511. face from

  512. disgrace

  513. and spitting.

  514. I was

  515. not

  516. rebellious.

  517. I gave

  518. my back

  519. to those

  520. who strike

  521. me.

  522. The servant

  523. is obedient

  524. to the

  525. will

  526. of God.

  527. And what

  528. is God's

  529. will for

  530. his servant?

  531. Well that's

  532. what we've

  533. recently

  534. remembered

  535. as we've

  536. sat at the

  537. Lord's

  538. table.

  539. At time

  540. of communion

  541. and in

  542. all our

  543. worship

  544. we remember

  545. what the

  546. Lord has

  547. done for

  548. us through

  549. his servant.

  550. Through the

  551. one who

  552. gave his

  553. life for

  554. his people.

  555. Who didn't

  556. rebel or

  557. turn backwards

  558. in the sense

  559. of shunning

  560. what lay

  561. ahead of

  562. him.

  563. But who

  564. bore our

  565. sins on

  566. the cross.

  567. The

  568. Father's

  569. will was

  570. for the

  571. servant

  572. to come

  573. and to

  574. give his

  575. life.

  576. And you

  577. think of

  578. the burden

  579. of this.

  580. The doing

  581. of the

  582. Father's

  583. will.

  584. The giving

  585. of his

  586. back to

  587. those who

  588. would strike

  589. him.

  590. You think

  591. of the

  592. burden of

  593. this as you

  594. see it in

  595. the Garden

  596. of Gethsemane.

  597. In Matthew

    Matthew 26:39

  598. 26 verse

  599. 39 where it

  600. says,

  601. Going a

  602. little further

  603. he fell on

  604. his face

  605. and prayed

  606. saying,

  607. My

  608. Father,

  609. if it

  610. be possible

  611. let this

  612. cup pass

  613. from me.

  614. Nevertheless,

  615. not as I

  616. will,

  617. but as

  618. you will.

  619. He didn't

  620. turn

  621. back.

  622. He gave

  623. his

  624. back.

  625. He set

  626. his face

  627. as a

  628. flint as

  629. it says

  630. here and

  631. you see

  632. it in the

  633. New Testament.

  634. He set

  635. his face

  636. towards

  637. Jerusalem.

  638. He didn't

  639. turn away.

  640. He didn't

  641. go backwards.

  642. He was

  643. not rebellious.

  644. He was

  645. obedient.

  646. He was

  647. the obedient

  648. servant.

  649. because of

  650. God's

  651. love for

  652. his people

  653. gave his

  654. back.

  655. And you

  656. think of

  657. what that

  658. entailed.

  659. The beating

  660. that he

  661. bore.

  662. The

  663. spitting.

  664. The

  665. disgrace.

  666. The striking

  667. of his

  668. cheeks.

  669. It's all

  670. there for

  671. us.

  672. As I

  673. say,

  674. as writing

  675. 700 years

  676. before it

  677. came to

  678. be.

  679. the

  680. servant's

  681. obedience

  682. is there.

  683. The

  684. Lord came

  685. to take

  686. our

  687. burdens

  688. from us.

  689. To bear

  690. our

  691. burdens.

  692. He

  693. was

  694. obedient.

  695. He

  696. became

  697. sin

  698. for us.

  699. God

  700. is there.

  701. Do we

  702. stand in

  703. awe of

  704. that?

  705. Do we

  706. stand in

  707. awe of

  708. the cross?

  709. Of how

  710. they crucified

  711. him?

  712. How they

  713. nailed his

  714. hands and

  715. feet?

  716. How they

  717. pushed a

  718. crown of

  719. thorns on

  720. his head?

  721. How they

  722. mocked him

  723. and spat

  724. at him?

  725. He did

  726. not turn

  727. backwards.

  728. He was

  729. not rebellious.

  730. he gave

  731. his back.

  732. The wonder

  733. of that

  734. love.

  735. But you

  736. see too

  737. how the

  738. Lord was

  739. sure of

  740. his help.

  741. But the

  742. Lord God

  743. helps me.

  744. Therefore I

  745. have not

  746. been disgraced.

  747. Therefore I

  748. have set my

  749. face like a

  750. flint and

  751. I know that

  752. I shall not

  753. be put to

  754. shame.

  755. All of

  756. these things

  757. he did

  758. for us.

  759. and it's

  760. assuring us

  761. too of

  762. the Lord's

  763. help as

  764. we put

  765. our trust

  766. in him.

  767. The final

  768. thing we

  769. want to

  770. see from

  771. this section

  772. is the

  773. servant's

  774. light.

  775. And you

  776. see here

  777. in the

  778. contrast you

  779. have at

  780. the end

  781. in verse

  782. 10.

  783. Who among

  784. you fears

  785. the Lord

  786. and obeys

  787. the voice

  788. of his

  789. servants.

  790. So this is

  791. a challenge

  792. for us

  793. here.

  794. Isaiah

  795. is speaking

  796. once again

  797. to us.

  798. Let him

  799. who walks

  800. in darkness

  801. and has

  802. no light

  803. trust in

  804. the name

  805. of the

  806. Lord and

  807. rely on

  808. his God.

  809. So he's

  810. telling us

  811. there what

  812. we are to

  813. do.

  814. We can

  815. walk in

  816. darkness

  817. and has

  818. no light.

  819. We have

  820. the hope

  821. of the

  822. Lord.

  823. Trust in

  824. the name

  825. of the

  826. Lord and

  827. rely on

  828. his God.

  829. But verse

  830. 11 shows

  831. the opposite.

  832. behold all

  833. who kindle

  834. a fire

  835. who equip

  836. yourselves

  837. with burning

  838. torches.

  839. Walk by the

  840. light of

  841. your fire

  842. and by

  843. the torches

  844. that you

  845. have kindled

  846. that you

  847. may have

  848. from my

  849. hand.

  850. This you

  851. have from

  852. my hand

  853. you shall

  854. lie down

  855. in torment.

  856. Lie down

  857. there is

  858. speaking of

  859. dying.

  860. You shall

  861. die in

  862. torment

  863. if you

  864. go by

  865. your own

  866. light.

  867. If you

  868. go by

  869. your own

  870. ways.

  871. The

  872. torch is

  873. the light

  874. he is

  875. talking

  876. about.

  877. There is

  878. just

  879. kindling

  880. a light

  881. for yourself

  882. to try

  883. and find

  884. your own

  885. way.

  886. It's

  887. the complete

  888. opposite

  889. of the

  890. servant's

  891. light.

  892. And

  893. listening

  894. to the

  895. servant's

  896. voice.

  897. Because

  898. we have

  899. one who

  900. came into

  901. our

  902. darkness

  903. and who

  904. is the

  905. light of

  906. the world.

  907. he gives

  908. us his

  909. light.

  910. Because

  911. there is

  912. no hope

  913. for us

  914. walking

  915. in

  916. darkness.

  917. But in

  918. John 8

    John 8:12

  919. verse 12

  920. Jesus spoke

  921. to them

  922. saying

  923. I am

  924. the light

  925. of the

  926. world.

  927. Whoever

  928. follows

  929. me will

  930. not walk

  931. in darkness

  932. but will

  933. have the

  934. light of

  935. life.

  936. You see

  937. it's not

  938. our own

  939. light.

  940. It's

  941. his.

  942. He is

  943. the light

  944. of the

  945. world.

  946. And that

  947. is the

  948. light.

  949. that we

  950. are to

  951. walk

  952. in.

  953. But it

  954. comes down

  955. to that

  956. question.

  957. Who among

  958. you fears

  959. the Lord

  960. and obeys

  961. the voice

  962. of his

  963. servant?

  964. Who is

  965. listening

  966. to the

  967. servant's

  968. word?

  969. The

  970. word that

  971. is able

  972. to sustain

  973. the weary.

  974. Who loves

  975. the servant

  976. because of

  977. his obedience?

  978. Because he

  979. gave his

  980. back that

  981. we might

  982. have life?

  983. Who among

  984. us fears

  985. the Lord

  986. and obeys

  987. the voice

  988. of his

  989. servant?

  990. What are

  991. we to

  992. do if

  993. we do

  994. let him

  995. walk?

  996. Let him

  997. who walks

  998. in darkness

  999. and has

  1000. no light

  1001. trust in

  1002. the name

  1003. of the

  1004. Lord and

  1005. rely on

  1006. his

  1007. God.

  1008. As we

  1009. hear Isaiah

  1010. speak of

  1011. a future,

  1012. it asks the

  1013. question of

  1014. us, what do we

  1015. want in

  1016. our own

  1017. future?

  1018. Where do

  1019. we see

  1020. ourselves in

  1021. another four

  1022. years?

  1023. Well, the

  1024. reality is

  1025. none of

  1026. us know

  1027. what our

  1028. situation

  1029. will be

  1030. then in

  1031. some ways.

  1032. But in

  1033. another we

  1034. do as

  1035. we put our

  1036. trust in

  1037. the Lord.

  1038. So we've

  1039. been reminded

  1040. in the

  1041. prayers this

  1042. evening,

  1043. he is a

  1044. God of

  1045. providence

  1046. and he

  1047. is a

  1048. God of

  1049. grace

  1050. who will

  1051. never leave

  1052. his people,

  1053. who will

  1054. never forsake

  1055. his people.

  1056. That is

  1057. why God

  1058. sent his

  1059. son, his

  1060. servant,

  1061. into this

  1062. world to

  1063. give us

  1064. the light

  1065. to go

  1066. on, to

  1067. go forward

  1068. and to

  1069. keep

  1070. going.

  1071. It's not

  1072. someone who

  1073. I would

  1074. regularly

  1075. quote, but

  1076. Nat King

  1077. Cole once

  1078. wrote a

  1079. song and

  1080. sang a

  1081. song called

  1082. Unforgettable

  1083. and the

  1084. words in

  1085. it, they

  1086. kind of

  1087. resonate with

  1088. this passage

  1089. in some

  1090. ways if we

  1091. can apply

  1092. them in

  1093. the right

  1094. way.

  1095. Unforgettable,

  1096. he said,

  1097. that's what

  1098. you are.

  1099. Unforgettable

  1100. though near

  1101. or far.

  1102. the people

  1103. of God

  1104. had been

  1105. taken far

  1106. away from

  1107. their home,

  1108. but the

  1109. Lord should

  1110. have been

  1111. unforgettable

  1112. for them.

  1113. The

  1114. warning that

  1115. Isaiah had

  1116. given was

  1117. you are

  1118. forgetting

  1119. the Lord.

  1120. The same

  1121. warning that

  1122. the people

  1123. had as they

  1124. went into

  1125. the promised

  1126. land in

  1127. Deuteronomy,

  1128. be careful

  1129. when you

  1130. go into

  1131. the land

  1132. and you

  1133. have all

  1134. of these

  1135. good things,

  1136. do not

  1137. forget the

  1138. Lord.

  1139. The Lord

  1140. should be

  1141. unforgettable,

  1142. but is he?

  1143. That song

  1144. goes on to

  1145. say,

  1146. that's why

  1147. it's

  1148. incredible

  1149. that someone

  1150. so

  1151. unforgettable

  1152. thinks that

  1153. I am

  1154. unforgettable

  1155. too.

  1156. In the

  1157. Lord's

  1158. Supper,

  1159. we do

  1160. this in

  1161. remembrance

  1162. of him,

  1163. because

  1164. surely it's

  1165. unforgettable

  1166. what he

  1167. has done

  1168. for us.

  1169. And what's

  1170. more remarkable

  1171. is that we

  1172. are unforgettable

  1173. to him,

  1174. that he

  1175. remembers us

  1176. and sees

  1177. our need

  1178. and provides

  1179. for it

  1180. in his

  1181. servant,

  1182. his son.

  1183. When

  1184. Christ

  1185. shall come

  1186. with shout

  1187. of acclamation

  1188. and take

  1189. me home,

  1190. what joy

  1191. shall fill

  1192. my heart,

  1193. then shall

  1194. I bow

  1195. in humble

  1196. adoration

  1197. and there

  1198. proclaim,

  1199. my God,

  1200. how great

  1201. thou art.

  1202. Let us

  1203. pray.

  1204. Our

  1205. Father in

  1206. heaven,

  1207. we thank

  1208. you that

  1209. as a

  1210. people we

  1211. are precious

  1212. to you

  1213. and that

  1214. though we

  1215. forget you,

  1216. that we

  1217. are unforgettable

  1218. to you.

  1219. And we

  1220. pray,

  1221. Lord,

  1222. that you

  1223. will remember

  1224. us in all

  1225. our different

  1226. needs.

  1227. We thank

  1228. you that

  1229. you know

  1230. us personally

  1231. and individually,

  1232. that you

  1233. know,

  1234. Lord,

  1235. just what we

  1236. need and

  1237. when we

  1238. need it.

  1239. And we

  1240. thank you

  1241. that no

  1242. matter what

  1243. our providence,

  1244. no matter

  1245. what might

  1246. change as

  1247. we look to

  1248. a future

  1249. that is so

  1250. often uncertain,

  1251. that you

  1252. do not

  1253. change,

  1254. but that

  1255. you remember

  1256. us and

  1257. that we

  1258. would see

  1259. how precious

  1260. you are,

  1261. how precious

  1262. your servant

  1263. is,

  1264. how precious

  1265. the word

  1266. that sustains

  1267. us when we

  1268. are weary,

  1269. how precious

  1270. the cross

  1271. and how

  1272. your servant

  1273. gave his

  1274. back,

  1275. and how

  1276. precious it

  1277. is that

  1278. we would

  1279. listen to

  1280. your voice

  1281. and seek

  1282. to walk

  1283. in your

  1284. paths by

  1285. your light.

  1286. Watch over

  1287. us, we

  1288. pray, and

  1289. guide us by

  1290. your truth,

  1291. forgiving all

  1292. our sin,

  1293. in Jesus'

  1294. name.

  1295. Amen.
