  1. We're going to begin our worship today. We're singing firstly in Psalm 116,

  2. Psalm 116 in the Scottish Psalter to the tune Spore. That's on page 395.

  3. We're singing verses 1 to 8.

  4. Wonderful words that assure us of the Lord's hearing of our prayer, not just the hearing

  5. of our prayers, but also that he answers and responds to prayer in his own way.

  6. And the psalmist is giving thanks to God and the wonderful words of the psalm that he has heard

  7. him and delivered his soul. As verse 8 puts it, my distressed soul from death delivered was by thee.

  8. So Psalm 116, I love the Lord because my voice and prayers heeded here. I, while I live, will call

  9. on him who bowed to me his ear. Verses 1 to 8 to his praise.

  10. I love the Lord because my voice and prayers heeded here. I, while I live, will call on him who bowed to me his ear.

  11. Of death the courts and sorrows stood, about me compass round. The pains of hell to call on me, I grieve and trouble find.

  12. Upon the name of God the Lord.

  13. God mercy full of righteousness, He gracious is our Lord. God saves the meek. I was brought low. He did me help.

  14. God saves the meek. I am the Lord. He was brought to you by the Lord. He is brought to you by the Lord.

  15. God saves the meek.

  16. O Thou, my soul, to Thou, my soul, to Thou return.

  17. Unto thy quiet rest

  18. For largely lo the Lord to thee

  19. This bounty hath expressed

  20. For my distresses all from death

  21. Delivered was by thee

  22. Lightest my morning

  23. Eyes from tears

  24. My feet from falling

  25. Free

  26. Let's now briefly call on the Lord in prayer

  27. and focusing especially on the Sunday school

  28. and the other children.

  29. Our gracious God, we give thanks

  30. that we can once again gather together in this way

  31. of all ages and all backgrounds,

  32. of all experiences,

  33. everything, Lord, that distinguishes us from each other,

  34. and yet we come together, O Lord, in a common desire to worship you

  35. and to praise your glorious name.

  36. We thank you today for our children.

  37. We thank you for their presence with us.

  38. We give thanks, Lord, that they're brought by parents and relatives

  39. to attend upon the church services,

  40. but also to come to learn in Sunday school and at tweenies

  41. of the things pertaining to Jesus and his love.

  42. And we pray for them today and ask that your blessing will be bestowed upon them.

  43. Help them, Lord, as they become accustomed to attending church

  44. and to being where the worship of God is held,

  45. that they may value this for themselves and grow up to be a people

  46. who will indeed honour the Lord

  47. and who will come to be known as his people in this world.

  48. So bless them today, we pray,

  49. and bless those who teach them

  50. and those leaders who care for them during tweenies.

  51. We give thanks for all who help,

  52. and we give thanks, Lord, for their dedication,

  53. for their willingness to be involved in such a way.

  54. Bless them, we pray, all our concerns today

  55. in our worship and in our lives on this holy day,

  56. a day that you have marked as holy to yourself.

  57. Receive our thanks now and cleanse us from all our sin.

  58. For Jesus' sake. Amen.

  59. Okay, children, it's good to see you all today, as always.

  60. You probably might not see that from where I am.

  61. Does anybody know what it is?

  62. Can you tell from a distance?

  63. It's my driving license.

  64. I wouldn't be able to drive a car or any other vehicle legally

  65. if I didn't have a driving license.

  66. So a driving license is very important.

  67. It means that I've been accepted,

  68. having passed a test many, many years ago now,

  69. having passed a test that qualifies me

  70. to drive safely, I hope, on the roads.

  71. So this is really a mark of my qualification

  72. that I can actually drive a car legally on the road.

  73. So if somebody asks me,

  74. are you allowed to drive this vehicle?

  75. You can produce, if I have it, this car.

  76. I always keep it with me.

  77. So you never know when you're going to be asked for it.

  78. And I can say, yes, there it is.

  79. It shows that I'm qualified to drive this vehicle.

  80. And I've had it for a number of years.

  81. Now, the Lord also gives us qualifications.

  82. And he makes us qualified to belong to his family

  83. because he gives us in our hearts

  84. that knowledge of himself,

  85. that love for himself,

  86. and especially faith

  87. by which we come to trust in him.

  88. And we find in the Bible

  89. that we're taught about adoption,

  90. which is a big word,

  91. to do with making someone part of your family.

  92. And God makes us his family

  93. when he adopts us.

  94. When we are related to Jesus

  95. by having accepted him,

  96. God then says,

  97. you're qualified now

  98. to be one of my children,

  99. to belong to my family.

  100. Now, there's another thing about this.

  101. You can't see it from there,

  102. but this card has my photograph on it.

  103. It's not, I don't think,

  104. a very good photograph

  105. because to pose for photographs,

  106. you have to be pretty stern

  107. and pretty boring looking.

  108. You're not allowed to smile.

  109. You're not allowed to do anything like that

  110. in case it distorts the image.

  111. But it is me.

  112. It is my photograph.

  113. And so anybody looking at that can say,

  114. as long as I haven't changed too much

  115. since the photo was taken,

  116. yes, that's you.

  117. Now, God, when he accepts us

  118. as his children,

  119. God knows exactly who we are.

  120. God knows everything about us

  121. and he has our ID

  122. in his own heart,

  123. in his own mind.

  124. So nobody can say

  125. that somebody else is me

  126. as far as God is concerned.

  127. He's saying, no,

  128. I know who you are.

  129. I know everything about you.

  130. And I know,

  131. especially in the way the Bible speaks

  132. about knowing,

  133. I know you in such a way

  134. as has loved you.

  135. And I love you in a way

  136. that knows you

  137. and knows your heart.

  138. Something else about this license,

  139. this driving license,

  140. is nobody else can actually

  141. use this license

  142. and pretend that it's me.

  143. I can't give it to somebody

  144. and say, you're okay,

  145. you can use this license,

  146. just pretend you're me

  147. and you'll be okay.

  148. I can't do that.

  149. I wouldn't want to do that anyway

  150. because that would be wrong.

  151. But nobody can actually

  152. use this license

  153. apart from myself.

  154. Donna has her own license.

  155. She can't go and drive

  156. any of the cars

  157. or vehicles.

  158. But she wants to drive

  159. and say, yes,

  160. but my husband is qualified.

  161. And it's the same with us

  162. spiritually as well.

  163. We can't go to God

  164. and say,

  165. I'm a Christian

  166. because my mom or dad

  167. is a Christian.

  168. We can't say to God,

  169. you have to receive me

  170. and take me to heaven

  171. because my mom loves you

  172. or my gran loves you.

  173. It has to be ourselves.

  174. That's true for all of us

  175. whatever age we're at.

  176. And one other thing

  177. about this license

  178. I want to mention today,

  179. as well as giving me

  180. acceptance to drive,

  181. qualification to drive,

  182. and having a photo ID,

  183. and also that it can't be used

  184. by anyone but myself,

  185. I also have to look after it.

  186. I need to look after it carefully

  187. because if I can't produce it,

  188. well, I've got a problem.

  189. If I was stopped next week

  190. by a traffic check

  191. or something like that,

  192. or if I did something wrong

  193. and sadly hit something

  194. or somebody in another car

  195. or whatever,

  196. a policeman would come along

  197. and say,

  198. have you got your driving license

  199. on you?

  200. And if I didn't have it,

  201. well, I could produce it afterwards

  202. if it was at home,

  203. but if I'd lost it,

  204. it would be a problem,

  205. wouldn't it?

  206. So you have to look after

  207. your relationship with the Lord.

  208. How do we look after

  209. our relationship with the Lord?

  210. How do we look after it?

  211. Well, we do so by coming to church

  212. like we're doing today

  213. to worship Him.

  214. We look after it by

  215. privately, personally,

  216. worshiping Him

  217. and praying to Him

  218. and asking the Lord

  219. to help us

  220. each and every day.

  221. So you look after

  222. your relationship with Jesus.

  223. You treat it carefully.

  224. You don't want to do anything

  225. that would actually bring

  226. shame upon

  227. your relationship

  228. with Jesus Himself

  229. or yourself.

  230. So these are important things

  231. about my driving license.

  232. Much more important, though,

  233. about yourself

  234. and your relationship

  235. with God.

  236. So remember

  237. that God accepts you

  238. as you come to Jesus.

  239. You know that He makes you

  240. one of His family.

  241. You need to do that

  242. for yourself.

  243. Nobody else can do it for you.

  244. You can't travel to heaven

  245. on anybody else's license.

  246. And you must look after it as well,

  247. as all our older folks

  248. must as well.

  249. And that's

  250. so important for us

  251. in life, isn't it?

  252. Well, let's say the Lord's Prayer

  253. then together.

  254. Amen.

  255. Amen.

  256. Amen.

  257. Our Father,

  258. which art in heaven,

  259. hallowed be thy name.

  260. Thy kingdom come.

  261. Thy will be done on earth

  262. as it is in heaven.

  263. Give us this day

  264. our daily bread.

  265. And forgive us our debts

  266. as we forgive our debtors.

  267. And lead us not into temptation,

  268. but deliver us from evil.

  269. For thine is the kingdom

  270. and the power

  271. and the glory forever.

  272. Amen.

  273. Amen.

  274. We're going to sing verses again,

  275. this time Psalm 119,

  276. page 166.

  277. And the verses marked

  278. 145 to 152.

  279. The tune this time is

  280. Eventide.

  281. I call with all my heart,

  282. Lord, answer me.

  283. And then all your decrees

  284. I will obey.

  285. I cry aloud to you,

  286. Lord, save my life,

  287. and I will keep your statutes

  288. every day.

  289. We'll sing these four stanzas,

  290. verses 145 to 152.

  291. I call with all my heart.

  292. Lord, answer me.

  293. Amen.

  294. Amen.

  295. Amen.

  296. Amen.

  297. I call with all my heart,

  298. Lord, answer me.

  299. And then all your decrees

  300. I will obey.

  301. I cry aloud to you, Lord, save my life,

  302. and I will keep your statutes every day.

  303. I rise before the dawn of God for help.

  304. God, I have set my hope upon your word.

  305. I stay awake throughout the earth of night,

  306. reflecting on your promises, O Lord.

  307. Lord, in your loving kindness, hear my voice,

  308. and in your justice save and keep my life.

  309. For those who disregard your holy law,

  310. approach with schemes of wickedness and sight.

  311. Yet you are near to those who seek you, Lord.

  312. All your commands are true and ever should.

  313. Rest from your statutes, long ago I learned,

  314. that you have made them always to endure.

  315. Now we're going to read from God's Word.

  316. Our reading this morning is from the Gospel of Mark,

  317. and chapter 12.

  318. Gospel according to Mark, and chapter 12.

  319. And we're going to read from verse 28.

  320. I know the bulletin has from verse 18,

  321. but we'll begin at verse 28,

  322. where Jesus, having been disputing with the Sadducees,

  323. we read in the earlier verses,

  324. the Sadducees who didn't believe in the resurrection,

  325. and were testing Jesus by the way in which they asked him that question.

  326. And Jesus answered them in the way you find there down to verse 27.

  327. God, as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  328. he's not the God of the dead, but of the living.

  329. Then at verse 28,

  330. one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another,

  331. and seeing that he answered them well, asked him,

  332. which commandment is the most important of all?

  333. Jesus answered,

  334. the most important is,

  335. hear, O Israel,

  336. the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  337. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  338. with all your soul,

  339. and with all your mind,

  340. and with all your strength.

  341. The second is this,

  342. you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  343. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  344. And the scribe said to him,

  345. you are right, teacher.

  346. You have truly said that he is one,

  347. and there is no other besides him.

  348. And to love him with all the heart,

  349. with all the understanding,

  350. with all the strength,

  351. and to love one's neighbor as oneself,

  352. is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  353. And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely,

  354. he said to him,

  355. you are not far from the kingdom of God.

  356. And after that,

  357. no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  358. And as Jesus taught in the temple,

  359. he said,

  360. how can the scribes say that Christ is the son of David?

  361. David himself in the Holy Spirit declared,

  362. the Lord said to my Lord,

  363. sit at my right hand

  364. until I put your enemies under your feet.

  365. David himself calls him Lord.

  366. So how is he his son?

  367. And the great throng heard him gladly.

  368. And in his teaching,

  369. he said,

  370. beware of the scribes

  371. who like to walk around in long robes

  372. and like greetings in the marketplaces

  373. and have the best seats in the synagogues

  374. and the places of honor at feasts

  375. who devour widows' houses

  376. and for a pretense make long prayers.

  377. They will receive the greater condemnation.

  378. And he sat down opposite the treasury

  379. and watched the people putting money

  380. into the offering box.

  381. Many rich people put in large sums

  382. and a poor widow came

  383. and put in two small copper coins

  384. which make a penny.

  385. And he called his disciples to him

  386. and said to them,

  387. truly I say to you,

  388. this poor widow has put in more

  389. than all those who are contributing

  390. to the offering box.

  391. For they all contributed out of their abundance,

  392. but she out of her poverty

  393. has put in everything she had,

  394. all she had to live on.

  395. Amen.

  396. May the Lord bless to us

  397. that reading of his word today.

  398. Let's again call upon his name in prayer.

  399. O Lord, our gracious God,

  400. we thank you for this opportunity today

  401. to give our minds anew

  402. to the teaching of your word

  403. and to call upon you in prayer

  404. to sing your praises,

  405. to know fellowship one with another

  406. and to seek fellowship with you as our God.

  407. We give thanks today, Lord,

  408. for the many privileges we have in life,

  409. for the many things

  410. that you have given us

  411. and your providence

  412. that you continue to bestow upon us

  413. in your kindness.

  414. Lord, we acknowledge that kindness today.

  415. We look around us in our own society,

  416. especially in different parts of the world

  417. where we find people in desperate need.

  418. We bless you that while

  419. we are always in need to some extent,

  420. while as your word tells us,

  421. the poor are always with us.

  422. Nevertheless, Lord,

  423. you have blessed us

  424. in such a way that we can say

  425. that we today have meant much

  426. by way of material blessings

  427. that so many other people in the world lack.

  428. We thank you for all aspects of your kindness.

  429. We give thanks especially, Lord,

  430. in your kindness

  431. that you have brought us the gospel

  432. that many generations ago

  433. you brought to this place we live in,

  434. the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  435. the message of salvation.

  436. We pray, Lord,

  437. as it has been with us

  438. as a community

  439. for all of these years,

  440. that you would enable us

  441. to prize it all the more,

  442. that you enable us,

  443. O Lord,

  444. to hold forth its teaching,

  445. not only by the word of our mouth,

  446. but the manner of our life.

  447. We thank you today, Lord,

  448. that you give us the opportunity

  449. to show to the world

  450. what it means

  451. to belong to God

  452. and to his kingdom.

  453. We pray that our relationship with you

  454. will be more than one

  455. that is outward in show,

  456. like the scribes we read of in this passage.

  457. Lord, help us, we pray inwardly

  458. and in our inmost soul

  459. to love you with all our heart,

  460. as we have also read,

  461. with all our mind,

  462. with all our understanding.

  463. Enable us, Lord,

  464. we pray to be thankful

  465. that you give us another opportunity today

  466. to extend our knowledge of you,

  467. to exercise our faith and love,

  468. and to show, Lord,

  469. that to the community around us

  470. that we indeed prize this day

  471. and prize this time of worship.

  472. We give thanks, Lord,

  473. for your word,

  474. this word that directs us

  475. in all aspects of life.

  476. We thank you that you have given us

  477. the conviction

  478. that it is your word,

  479. that you have given us, Lord,

  480. the knowledge that,

  481. whether we read of commands

  482. or promises or prophecies,

  483. some fulfilled,

  484. some yet to be fulfilled.

  485. In all aspects of it, Lord,

  486. you still continue to speak to us.

  487. And we pray today

  488. that we may hear that voice,

  489. that your word may be

  490. a living word to us,

  491. that we will receive it

  492. by your grace and to our hearts,

  493. that we will treasure it there

  494. and seek to live by it

  495. as each day goes by.

  496. And we thank you, Lord,

  497. for every way in which

  498. we have the help of others

  499. and are able to help others.

  500. We pray that our lives

  501. may be all the more useful

  502. as time goes on,

  503. that you would give us, Lord,

  504. by the grace of your Spirit

  505. to truly be living witnesses to you,

  506. holding forth that word of life

  507. so that others may come

  508. and see something

  509. of the beauty of the Lord

  510. and be drawn to him for themselves.

  511. Remember those today, we pray,

  512. who still do not know you.

  513. We think especially of those

  514. in our community around us

  515. who today have no desire

  516. to be in a place of worship

  517. and who today may worship

  518. other ideologies

  519. and who may come to follow

  520. other ideas

  521. rather than the gospel

  522. of what it means

  523. to live a fulfilled life.

  524. Remember us, Lord,

  525. as a community, we pray.

  526. Pour out upon us your blessing.

  527. We ask that you would

  528. return us to yourself

  529. and give us the blessing

  530. of your Spirit

  531. to guide us,

  532. to quicken us

  533. and to be in every aspect

  534. of our lives as your people,

  535. that strength and that stay

  536. that we require.

  537. Remember all those who,

  538. Lord, today have difficulties

  539. in their lives,

  540. different types of trial

  541. to contend with.

  542. we know that there are some,

  543. Lord, who belong to us

  544. as a congregation,

  545. some in our community

  546. that we know about,

  547. along with those who mourn

  548. the passing of loved ones.

  549. Bless them all, we pray,

  550. and bless us all

  551. in our times of need

  552. as they are known to us.

  553. Help us to draw near to you,

  554. to draw our strength from you,

  555. that we too, Lord,

  556. will be able to sing

  557. more meaningfully these words

  558. that we have been singing.

  559. I love the Lord

  560. because my voice and prayers

  561. heeded here.

  562. I, while I live,

  563. will call upon me,

  564. will call upon him

  565. who bowed to me his ear.

  566. Grant us, Lord, thankfulness

  567. that you hear our prayers,

  568. that you read the thoughts

  569. and the concerns of our hearts.

  570. We pray today for the world

  571. in which we live.

  572. We pray, Lord,

  573. for all places in the world,

  574. so many of them, Lord,

  575. where there is trouble,

  576. where there is terrorism,

  577. where there is war,

  578. where there is famine,

  579. where there is deprivation,

  580. where there is persecution,

  581. where there is, Lord,

  582. so much of those issues

  583. that we know are contrary

  584. to your will

  585. and are but the workings

  586. of human beings

  587. in their sinfulness

  588. and in their hatred

  589. for one another.

  590. Lord, remember today,

  591. we pray,

  592. the people of Moscow,

  593. the people of Russia,

  594. we know how much, Lord,

  595. they themselves

  596. have been involved

  597. in aggression and war

  598. against Ukraine

  599. in recent years

  600. and we pray today

  601. that you bless them

  602. as they have received

  603. such an event

  604. as has happened

  605. with the loss

  606. of so many lives

  607. in Moscow itself.

  608. we pray that you would

  609. bless the regime

  610. over them.

  611. We pray that you would

  612. break in upon the hardness

  613. and darkness of heart

  614. as you have done

  615. many times with others.

  616. Lord, we pray that

  617. the power of the gospel

  618. especially

  619. might come to prevail

  620. in their midst.

  621. We pray for those

  622. who are faithful to you

  623. throughout that great nation.

  624. we ask that you would

  625. continue, Lord,

  626. to uphold them

  627. and strengthen them

  628. against aggression,

  629. against imprisonment,

  630. against threats

  631. and many other ways

  632. in which they are dealt with

  633. for their faithfulness

  634. to you.

  635. Remember, too,

  636. the situation

  637. in the Middle East.

  638. We pray for the conflict

  639. in Gaza

  640. with Israel

  641. and with Hamas.

  642. Lord, we pray for all

  643. who are so affected

  644. by the tragedy

  645. of these things.

  646. and we ask that

  647. you would bless

  648. the situation

  649. in such a way

  650. as to bring peace.

  651. We pray, O gracious one,

  652. that you would bring

  653. glory to yourself

  654. and may your kingdom advance

  655. despite how difficult

  656. it is, Lord,

  657. for us to believe

  658. how can it advance

  659. in these circumstances.

  660. Yet we know that it has

  661. in the past

  662. and we pray

  663. that it will be so

  664. in our day as well.

  665. And we ask that you

  666. would continue, Lord,

  667. to bless our own nation.

  668. Bless those who are over us

  669. in government.

  670. We pray that you would

  671. grant to them, Lord,

  672. the wisdom,

  673. wisdom that is from on high,

  674. the wisdom that comes

  675. through a knowledge

  676. of yourself

  677. and of your truth.

  678. And, Lord,

  679. we pray that you would

  680. graciously bless

  681. our rulers.

  682. We pray for them

  683. in Scotland

  684. and in Westminster

  685. who preside over us

  686. in government

  687. and in devolved administrations.

  688. We pray that you would

  689. grant, Lord,

  690. to turn us more and more

  691. into your own ways

  692. and to bless those

  693. who stand

  694. for your gospel,

  695. for your values

  696. in our parliament.

  697. We pray that you would

  698. continue, Lord,

  699. to uphold them

  700. and to grant that

  701. they may be encouraged

  702. to keep on witnessing

  703. to you.

  704. Remember the royal family

  705. during these difficult days

  706. for them.

  707. Remember our king

  708. during his own illness

  709. and treatment.

  710. We commit him to you.

  711. We ask that you would bless him

  712. and bless Camilla as well.

  713. We pray that you'd bless them

  714. as a family.

  715. We pray especially

  716. in these days,

  717. O Lord,

  718. that you would grant

  719. your blessing

  720. to Catherine

  721. as she has come

  722. to publicly declare

  723. her treatment

  724. for cancer.

  725. We pray that that

  726. may be an encouragement

  727. to many others,

  728. O Lord.

  729. You would grant

  730. that there be

  731. a lessening

  732. of the interest in her

  733. and grant them

  734. some privacy

  735. so that they may,

  736. O Lord,

  737. find time together

  738. and together as a family

  739. to attend to these matters

  740. free from harassment.

  741. We ask, Lord,

  742. that your blessing

  743. will be with all others today

  744. who are receiving treatment

  745. or anticipating such,

  746. who have gone through surgery,

  747. who are in hospital

  748. or in care homes

  749. or in the hospitals locally.

  750. Bless them

  751. and bless those

  752. who tend to their needs.

  753. We ask that you would

  754. graciously hear us

  755. as we pray for them.

  756. We pray all these things

  757. confessing our own sins,

  758. confessing our need

  759. of cleansing

  760. and of your forgiveness.

  761. We ask it all

  762. in Jesus' name.

  763. Amen.

  764. Now,

  765. before we turn

  766. to Mark chapter 12,

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  767. we're going to sing

  768. some more verses

  769. in Psalm 37.

  770. Psalm number 37.

  771. That's on page 254.

  772. Singing verses 16 to 21.

  773. The tune is Grafenberg.

  774. A little that a just man hath

  775. is more and better far

  776. than is the wealth

  777. of many such

  778. as lewd and wicked are.

  779. For sinners' arms

  780. shall broken be,

  781. but God the just sustains.

  782. God knows the just man's days

  783. and still their heritage remains.

  784. So that's verses 16 to 21.

  785. A little that a just man hath.

  786. A little that a just man hath

  787. is more and better far,

  788. than is the wealth of many such

  789. as lewd and wicked are.

  790. For sinners' arms shall broken be,

  791. but God the just sustains.

  792. God knows the just man's days

  793. and still their heritage remains.

  794. They shall not be ashamed

  795. when they the evil time do see.

  796. And when the days of famine are,

  797. they satisfied shall be.

  798. But wicked men and foes of God

  799. as fat of lambs decay,

  800. they shall consume

  801. yea, and to school

  802. they shall fortune away.

  803. The wicked borrows but the same

  804. again be done the pain.

  805. Whereas the righteous mercy shows

  806. and gives his own away.

  807. Let's turn for a short time this morning now

  808. to Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  809. Mark 12 at verse 41.

  810. We'll look at this short passage.

  811. Jesus sat down opposite the treasury

  812. and watched the people putting money

  813. into the offering box.

  814. Many rich people put in large sums.

  815. And a poor widow came and put in

  816. two small copper coins,

  817. which make a penny.

  818. And he called his disciples to them

  819. and said to them,

  820. Truly I say to you,

  821. this poor widow has put in more

  822. than all those who are contributing

  823. to the offering box.

  824. For they all contributed

  825. out of their abundance.

  826. But she, out of her poverty,

  827. has put in everything she had,

  828. all she had to live on.

  829. Well, we're all very much aware

  830. each day goes by

  831. that much revolves around money

  832. in our society

  833. and in our own lives personally as well.

  834. It's hardly a news bulletin

  835. without some reference or other

  836. to the economy

  837. or to inflation

  838. or to bank interest rates.

  839. So much of that is current news

  840. and has been news

  841. all down through the generations.

  842. We regularly hear about those

  843. who have massive bonuses,

  844. whether it's in industry

  845. or in banking,

  846. where again money is central

  847. to the detail that's given us there.

  848. We hear about the massive wages

  849. of certain footballers

  850. who are at the top

  851. of their profession

  852. and who earn hundreds

  853. of thousands of pounds a week,

  854. amounting to millions a year.

  855. Huge sums of money.

  856. We hear about lottery gains.

  857. So many other things

  858. you hear from day to day

  859. that center around money

  860. or riches

  861. or the use of money

  862. or something or other

  863. to do with that.

  864. And the Bible has much to say to us

  865. about money

  866. and about the use of money,

  867. about our own use of money,

  868. about how to regard money,

  869. about what our attitude should be

  870. to money,

  871. to the possession of it,

  872. or to seeing its use elsewhere.

  873. And Jesus also included it

  874. as here in his teachings.

  875. And that should actually

  876. make us conscious

  877. that because it's given

  878. that sort of place in the Bible,

  879. it's not by any means

  880. the most important topic

  881. the Bible deals with,

  882. but it does deal with it

  883. to such an extent

  884. that we shouldn't just dismiss it

  885. as unimportant

  886. among our thoughts of things

  887. which are morally

  888. or spiritually important.

  889. And Jesus here is

  890. really driving home

  891. a very important lesson

  892. on what sort of perspective

  893. we should have,

  894. not only in our money,

  895. but also on our support

  896. of God's cause with money,

  897. on what we give

  898. to the upholding of the gospel,

  899. and how we use our money

  900. in that way to be useful,

  901. we trust,

  902. for the gospel itself

  903. and for the things of God.

  904. Well, the Lord,

  905. as he, as we brought,

  906. as is brought out

  907. in this passage here,

  908. the Lord in this context

  909. sat opposite the treasury

  910. in the temple

  911. where the money box

  912. was located,

  913. where people put their offerings

  914. into the box

  915. for the upholding

  916. of the things of the temple.

  917. And there are two things

  918. we can take from it.

  919. First of all,

  920. the Lord's observance

  921. of the offerings.

  922. The Lord's observance.

  923. He was deliberately saying to us,

  924. he sat down opposite the treasury

  925. and watched the people

  926. putting money

  927. into the offering box.

  928. He watched the people.

  929. It's not a mere observance.

  930. It's an observance

  931. with a certain amount

  932. of assessment in it.

  933. Jesus didn't just watch this

  934. as it was going on casually

  935. or just happened to notice

  936. out of the corner of his eye.

  937. He deliberately studied

  938. what was going on.

  939. And any time you see in the Bible

  940. that Jesus is observing keenly

  941. something that's going on,

  942. whatever it is,

  943. you and I have to take note of that

  944. and say,

  945. well, Jesus is interested in that.

  946. This is something

  947. that he himself observes keenly.

  948. That's what he was doing here.

  949. He sat down opposite the treasury

  950. and watched the people

  951. putting money

  952. into the offering box.

  953. We might think

  954. that that's really quite unimportant

  955. or relatively unimportant,

  956. but to Jesus it mattered.

  957. And because it mattered to Jesus,

  958. he observed it.

  959. He was looking at it.

  960. He was studying it.

  961. And of course,

  962. that follows through

  963. into what we do ourselves.

  964. It was important enough for Jesus

  965. to observe it carefully

  966. and actually to bring out

  967. the teaching you find

  968. in the following verses from it

  969. so that those who were listening

  970. could gain from that

  971. if they were really keen

  972. to listen properly

  973. to what he was saying.

  974. It wasn't enough for Jesus

  975. to actually note it

  976. and comment on it.

  977. He brought out this teaching

  978. that you find in the verses

  979. which follow.

  980. And it's important for us,

  981. of course,

  982. sounds a fairly

  983. straightforward point to make,

  984. but it's one we very often forget,

  985. isn't it,

  986. that everything we do

  987. is observed by the Lord.

  988. Even the most common actions of life,

  989. they're observed by the Lord.

  990. Not just observed by the Lord,

  991. but measured by the Lord,

  992. weighed up by the Lord.

  993. Even the money we put in the plate

  994. or the offering we have online

  995. or wherever it is.

  996. It's observed by the Lord.

  997. The Lord is taking note of that.

  998. The Lord is measuring that.

  999. The Lord is seeing

1000. the attitude of the heart in that.

1001. It's not the amount we put in.

1002. It's not the amount of our time

1003. that we give to His service.

1004. Not the amount of money

1005. we use to support the gospel.

1006. It's primarily the attitude behind it.

1007. It's the direction of our mind.

1008. It's the thoughts of our hearts

1009. as we go about all our actions in life.

1010. Well, the Lord observes keenly

  1011. what we're doing.

1012. That's what you find in verses 41 to 42 here,

  1013. that He observed them,

1014. and He observed how rich people,

  1015. many rich people,

1016. or they put in large sums.

1017. And then there came along this poor widow,

1018. and she put in two small copper coins.

1019. Now, Jesus is making an assessment.

1020. When you read these words,

1021. it shows us that in Jesus' mind,

  1022. He's measuring this.

  1023. He's weighing this.

  1024. He's weighing it up.

  1025. He's comparing the offerings.

1026. And He's comparing the offerings

1027. and taking note of the people

  1028. who are involved

1029. and what their position in life is

1030. in relation to their offerings.

1031. They have many rich, He says,

1032. and there was this one poor widow.

1033. Now, there's nothing here about

  1034. condemning those rich people

  1035. for having the riches.

1036. The Bible never does that.

1037. Abraham was a very rich man.

1038. Job was a very rich man.

1039. There are many rich people

  1040. down through the years

1041. that have come to serve the Lord

1042. in a way that's acceptable and commendable,

  1043. and they're never criticized

  1044. for having the riches.

1045. It's not having money that's the problem.

1046. It's not having an abundance of money

  1047. that's the problem.

  1048. That's not being millionaires.

  1049. If we're millionaires,

  1050. that's not the problem.

  1051. What Jesus is measuring

1052. is not just what we do with it,

1053. but what the thought of our heart is

1054. as we do whatever we do with it.

  1055. That's what He's doing here.

  1056. He's assessing.

  1057. He's carrying out a comparison,

1058. not condemning the rich for being rich,

1059. not condemning the poor widow

  1060. for being poor.

  1061. You see, for Jesus,

1062. it's all a matter of the heart, isn't it?

  1063. It's all a matter of what's internal,

1064. and what is internal ought to match

1065. what is external as well in our lives.

  1066. The attitudes, the mindset,

  1067. the heart, the motives.

1068. And then we find the same thing

  1069. in the previous verses

  1070. that we read together

1071. from verse 38 in the teaching.

  1072. He said,

  1073. Beware of the scribes

1074. who like to walk around in long robes

1075. and like greetings in the marketplaces,

1076. have the best seats in the synagogues

1077. and the places of honor at feasts,

  1078. who devour widows' houses

1079. and for a pretense make long prayers.

1080. They will receive the greater condemnation.

1081. You can see at once

  1082. there's a very close connection

  1083. between that

1084. and the passage we're looking at

1085. that follows on from that

  1086. because that's a passage

  1087. regarding the scribes.

1088. It's to do with externals,

1089. to do with making a big show of themselves.

  1090. It's a matter of drawing attention

  1091. to themselves

1092. so that people will say,

  1093. Aren't they really generous?

  1094. Aren't they really good?

  1095. For a pretense.

  1096. They make long prayers.

1097. Jesus today is not interested

1098. in how long you pray for.

  1099. He's not interested really

1100. in what kind of clothes you wear.

  1101. It's what's in your heart

1102. and what's in my heart.

1103. The thoughts of your mind,

  1104. the attitude,

  1105. the motives you have,

1106. the unseen things of the soul.

1107. That's what Jesus really is measuring

  1108. most of all,

1109. more so than the outside

  1110. and the externals.

  1111. You have the same

  1112. in chapter 7,

  1113. a famous passage

1114. you find in the Gospels here,

1115. Matthew and Mark and Luke.

  1116. You find

  1117. chapter 7 there.

1118. I don't want to go through it

  1119. just now.

  1120. It took time.

1121. But it's to do with

  1122. traditions and commandments

  1123. which the Pharisees especially

1124. were laying such great store by.

  1125. And of course,

1126. Jesus went on to say,

1127. well, this is what defiles a person

1128. not to eat with hands

  1129. that are unwashed,

  1130. but what defiles them

  1131. is what actually comes

  1132. from inside

1133. and then is seen outwardly.

  1134. Evil thoughts,

  1135. sexual immorality,

  1136. theft,

  1137. murder,

  1138. adultery,

  1139. coveting,

  1140. wickedness,

  1141. deceit,

  1142. sensuality,

  1143. envy,

  1144. slander,

  1145. pride,

  1146. foolishness.

  1147. All these evil things

  1148. come from within

1149. and they defile the person.

  1150. That's what defilement is,

  1151. Jesus.

1152. It's rooted in the heart.

1153. It emerges from the soul.

  1154. And that's especially

1155. what his mind was set upon,

1156. what his teaching really set forth

  1157. as important.

  1158. So you see,

  1159. we don't measure things

  1160. by outward things,

  1161. outward show.

  1162. We actually measure

1163. as far as we're able to

  1164. by genuinely seeing

1165. what is it that comes out

  1166. of people's hearts.

  1167. Are they kind

  1168. or are they not?

  1169. Are they loving

  1170. or are they not?

  1171. And so on,

  1172. as Jesus himself

  1173. sets before us.

  1174. Well,

  1175. the Lord's observance

  1176. of the offerings.

  1177. But secondly,

  1178. let's look at

  1179. the Lord's verdict

  1180. of the offerings.

1181. And you know the phrase

  1182. nowadays that's often mentioned,

  1183. less is more.

  1184. Well,

  1185. you could apply that

  1186. in some sense

1187. to what you find here

  1188. in the difference

  1189. between the widow

  1190. and these rich people.

1191. How is it that he says

  1192. she has put in

  1193. more than

1194. all of those rich people

  1195. put in?

  1196. Now,

  1197. obviously,

  1198. literally,

1199. she had these two pennies,

  1200. two copper coins

  1201. amounted to a penny,

  1202. it says here.

  1203. It's really

  1204. a very small item

1205. of money in those days.

  1206. We're told,

  1207. in fact,

  1208. that it was about

  1209. one hundredth

  1210. of a day's wage,

  1211. an average wage

  1212. for a day.

  1213. This is one hundredth.

1214. This is what she had

  1215. to live upon,

  1216. one hundredth

  1217. of a day's wage.

1218. What did she do with it?

  1219. She put it all

  1220. into the treasury.

1221. She gave it to the temple.

1222. She gave it to the Lord.

1223. She gave it to God.

  1224. But you see,

  1225. the difference is

1226. the reason that he can say

  1227. she put more in

1228. than all these other ones,

  1229. the difference really

  1230. is summed up,

  1231. if you like,

  1232. by these words,

  1233. out of.

  1234. You see,

1235. as you go through it,

  1236. she gave out

  1237. of her poverty.

  1238. They gave out

  1239. of their abundance.

  1240. That's what makes

  1241. the difference.

  1242. That's what Jesus measured.

  1243. They gave out

  1244. of their abundance.

  1245. She was poor.

  1246. She was very poor,

  1247. but she gave all

1248. that she had there to God.

1249. This was all she had

  1250. to live on.

1251. That's how Mark puts it.

1252. She has put everything in.

1253. This is what Jesus said.

  1254. All that she had

  1255. to live on.

1256. And yet she put it all

  1257. into the treasury

  1258. because she said

  1259. that really rightly

  1260. belongs to God.

1261. I owe it to Him.

  1262. I love Him.

  1263. Therefore,

  1264. that's where the money

  1265. is going.

  1266. And the rich,

  1267. well,

1268. after they had put in

  1269. whatever money

  1270. they put in,

  1271. it was an abundance.

  1272. Out of their abundance

  1273. they put in

  1274. whatever it was,

  1275. but it was out

  1276. of their abundance,

1277. not out of their poverty.

  1278. And they would have

  1279. much left.

  1280. Whatever sums

  1281. they put in,

  1282. Jesus knew,

  1283. they would have

  1284. much left over

  1285. after that.

  1286. And so you see,

  1287. when the Lord

  1288. measures our contributions,

  1289. as we said earlier,

  1290. He actually weighs

  1291. these contributions

  1292. in His own mind,

  1293. morally,

  1294. spiritually,

  1295. He weighs them.

  1296. Not just talking about

  1297. the money we put

  1298. on the plate,

  1299. or that's not

  1300. left out of it.

  1301. It's not how we,

  1302. the only thing

1303. that we apply this to.

  1304. It's the measure

  1305. of our time.

  1306. How much time

  1307. do we give

  1308. to the Lord?

  1309. How much time

1310. do we give to prayer?

  1311. How much time

  1312. do we give

  1313. to reading a Bible?

  1314. How much time

  1315. do we give

  1316. to speaking about

  1317. the Lord to others?

  1318. I'm just guilty

1319. of this as anybody else

  1320. in measuring

1321. the time that I give

1322. to all of these things

1323. because I find so often

  1324. that all too easily

  1325. I'm distracted

  1326. and I've given

  1327. so much time,

  1328. whether it's

  1329. emails or my phone

1330. or whatever else it is,

  1331. social media.

  1332. It's a huge

1333. eater up of our time,

  1334. especially social media,

  1335. isn't it?

  1336. Huge amounts

  1337. of our time

  1338. if we're not

  1339. very controlled

  1340. about it.

  1341. And when the Lord

  1342. measures our time

  1343. and our money

  1344. and our use

  1345. of our facilities,

1346. our use of our resources

  1347. as we have

  1348. talking about

  1349. personally here

  1350. as well as

  1351. congregationally,

  1352. well,

  1353. he's weighing that up

  1354. and he's studying it

  1355. and he's asking,

  1356. how does that compare

  1357. with the time

  1358. that you're giving

  1359. to me?

  1360. How does it compare

  1361. to the time

  1362. you're giving

  1363. to just sitting down

  1364. with your Bible

  1365. and praying

  1366. and asking me

  1367. to bless that?

  1368. Well,

  1369. there's the weighing up

  1370. by Jesus

  1371. of the issues

  1372. of life

  1373. and he doesn't

  1374. measure

  1375. your contribution

  1376. or mine,

  1377. whether it's financial

1378. or in terms of time

  1379. or service

  1380. or whatever else,

  1381. he doesn't measure

  1382. our contribution

  1383. by comparing it

  1384. with what others do.

  1385. As I know,

  1386. he's comparing here

  1387. the poor widow

  1388. with those who put

  1389. of their abundance

  1390. these rich people

  1391. into the treasury.

  1392. But when he comes

  1393. to you

  1394. and to me

  1395. and asks ourselves

  1396. how we are

  1397. in relation to

  1398. supporting his cause,

  1399. giving of our time

  1400. and so on,

  1401. he doesn't say,

  1402. well,

  1403. consider so and so

  1404. and see what

  1405. they're doing.

  1406. He's just saying,

1407. how much of your time,

1408. how much of your finance,

1409. how much of your resources

  1410. out of the total

1411. are you giving to me?

1412. And it's important as well,

  1413. isn't it,

1414. that we see this widow,

  1415. you see,

  1416. we could say

1417. that she might have decided

  1418. when she came

  1419. to put her offering

  1420. in the treasury,

  1421. she might have decided,

  1422. well,

  1423. I've only got

1424. those two tiny coins left,

1425. it's hardly worth much at all.

  1426. I'll put one

  1427. into the treasury

  1428. and at least

1429. I'll have the other one

  1430. left for myself.

  1431. She didn't do that.

  1432. She put both

  1433. into the treasury,

  1434. leaving herself

  1435. without any.

  1436. Why was that?

  1437. Because her mindset was

  1438. that she valued God.

  1439. She valued God

  1440. and loved God.

  1441. Obviously,

1442. she wouldn't have done it otherwise.

1443. And she said to herself,

  1444. well,

1445. I'll give these to God

1446. and God will give me back

  1447. as he sees fit.

1448. I'm sure that would be

1449. her way of looking at it.

1450. And isn't that how it is

1451. really with ourselves as well?

  1452. Because ultimately,

  1453. we're not actually

  1454. in the ultimate sense

  1455. giving of our time

  1456. or of our money

  1457. to the church.

  1458. Yes,

  1459. I know it's perfectly proper

  1460. to think of

1461. the money that you put

  1462. in the collection plate

1463. or that you put in the envelope

  1464. or that you offer

  1465. by standing order

  1466. or whatever.

  1467. Of course,

1468. that's given to the church

1469. in that sense of it.

1470. It's given to the church

1471. so that it's looked after

  1472. by those who are

1473. in charge of these things

  1474. and used and allocated,

  1475. given to central funds

  1476. or distributed locally

  1477. or whatever it is.

  1478. Of course,

1479. it is given to the church,

1480. but not in the ultimate sense.

1481. Because when you do that,

  1482. organizing your funds online

  1483. by standing order

  1484. or putting your envelope

  1485. on the plate,

  1486. what you're really saying

  1487. in your mind is,

  1488. Lord,

  1489. this is for you.

  1490. This is for you.

1491. It is you who deserves this.

  1492. You are the one

1493. that I have in mind

  1494. as I give this.

1495. As I give of my time

  1496. to prayer,

  1497. to bind with study,

  1498. to attending church,

  1499. to putting my money

  1500. in the plate.

  1501. Lord,

  1502. this is for you.

  1503. You are the one

  1504. who deserves it.

  1505. You are the one

  1506. I acknowledge

1507. has been so good to me.

  1508. It's the least

1509. I can do in return

1510. to give you of my time,

  1511. of my resources,

  1512. accordingly.

  1513. And that's because

  1514. you want his cause

  1515. to grow,

  1516. isn't it?

  1517. You want him

  1518. to be glorified.

  1519. You want him

  1520. to be praised.

  1521. You want his cause

  1522. in a wider sense

  1523. as well as

  1524. in the congregation sense

  1525. to grow

  1526. and to flourish.

  1527. And what you give

1528. by way of your time

1529. or by way of your finance

  1530. is designed

  1531. in your heart

  1532. and your mindset

  1533. to contribute

  1534. towards that increase.

  1535. You know,

  1536. that's the basis

  1537. for voluntary service.

  1538. Not everybody

  1539. who serves

  1540. in this congregation

  1541. by any means

  1542. is paid for it.

  1543. It's a privilege

  1544. for us

  1545. as ministers

  1546. of the gospel

  1547. to be paid

  1548. centrally by the church

  1549. through the funds

  1550. that you put

  1551. into the collection plate

1552. or in your standing order

  1553. or whatever

  1554. and that comes

1555. by way of our stipend

  1556. or a proportion

  1557. of it at least.

  1558. There goes to mission

1559. and other works as well

  1560. that the church

  1561. is involved with.

  1562. But voluntary service

1563. is such a blessed thing,

  1564. isn't it?

  1565. Because this congregation,

  1566. for example,

  1567. as you think of,

  1568. as you look at

  1569. that bulletin sheet today

  1570. and you think of

  1571. all of those meetings

  1572. that are involved

  1573. in this coming week,

  1574. God willing,

  1575. you think of

  1576. the number of hours

  1577. of voluntary service

  1578. that go towards

  1579. the upholding

  1580. of these meetings,

  1581. of these services,

  1582. of these activities.

  1583. You're a blessed congregation.

  1584. You're a privileged congregation

  1585. to have people

  1586. giving of their time

  1587. so willingly,

  1588. whether it's

  1589. looking after tweenies

1590. or teaching in Sunday school

  1591. or Bible class

  1592. or whatever other activities

  1593. require voluntary service

1594. and there are many others.

1595. You can see them listed

  1596. as I've said.

1597. But what a privileged congregation

  1598. you are

  1599. to have people

  1600. who are willing

1601. to give of their time

1602. to the cause of the Lord,

1603. not for what they can

1604. get out of it themselves,

  1605. but what they hope

  1606. will contribute towards

  1607. an increase

  1608. in the followers

  1609. of the Lord,

1610. in those who serve the Lord,

1611. in those who love the Lord.

  1612. And if you can,

1613. if you're not presently involved

1614. voluntarily in some of the things

  1615. that are going on,

1616. whether it's Fridays at the Free

1617. or any of these more practical

  1618. type meetings,

  1619. just please consider,

  1620. can I actually contribute

  1621. more to this?

1622. Or can I do something

  1623. more than I'm doing?

1624. Can I actually offer myself

  1625. for this other activity

1626. that I see are in need

  1627. of volunteers?

  1628. Because all of that

  1629. really is part of

  1630. a contribution

  1631. to the Lord.

  1632. All of that belongs

  1633. to a willing service

  1634. for the Lord.

1635. All of that should be

  1636. based on the pattern

  1637. of this poor widow

1638. who had all too little.

  1639. And maybe you're saying

  1640. of yourself,

  1641. and I'm saying

  1642. of myself today,

1643. well, all that I can contribute

  1644. to the Lord

1645. is not very much, really.

  1646. Perhaps I can make

  1647. a cup of tea

1648. during some of the fellowships

  1649. or whatever,

1650. or perhaps I can be involved

  1651. in a practical sense

  1652. with WFM meetings

  1653. or whatever.

  1654. It all counts.

  1655. It's all weighed

  1656. by the Lord.

  1657. It's all observed

  1658. by Him.

  1659. For all of that,

  1660. we're thankful

  1661. and He takes note,

  1662. friends,

1663. of all that you're doing.

  1664. And He takes note

1665. in a way that commends

  1666. for it,

1667. as He did this poor widow.

1668. And that brings us finally,

  1669. the final point is

  1670. the Bible's own

  1671. or God's definition

  1672. of what it is

  1673. to be rich.

  1674. Here are all these

  1675. rich people

  1676. and they're putting

  1677. all of this

  1678. into the treasury,

  1679. whatever amount they had

  1680. and they still had

  1681. much left over.

  1682. Who in this passage

  1683. is truly rich?

  1684. Who is rich

  1685. in the highest sense?

  1686. It's not these people.

  1687. It's this poor widow.

  1688. She's put in everything

  1689. she's got.

  1690. But is she rich

  1691. in her soul?

  1692. Is she rich

  1693. in her thinking?

  1694. Is she rich

  1695. in her mindset?

  1696. Is she rich

  1697. in her relationship

  1698. of God?

  1699. Yes, she is.

  1700. She's not doing it

  1701. for show.

  1702. She's doing it

  1703. because she loves

  1704. the Lord.

  1705. She's doing it

  1706. because she values

  1707. what she has

  1708. in the temple

  1709. by way of God's

  1710. ordinances.

  1711. And how much

  1712. that's part

  1713. of the teaching

  1714. of Jesus elsewhere

  1715. is obvious

  1716. when you go through

  1717. the Gospels,

  1718. when you follow through

  1719. into the Epistles

  1720. as well,

1721. and indeed when you go

  1722. to the Old Testament

  1723. as well.

  1724. Think, for example,

  1725. of Matthew

  1726. in the Sermon

  1727. on the Mount,

  1728. Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  1729. you have verses 19

  1730. to 21.

  1731. We often read these.

  1732. Verses 19 to 21,

  1733. Do not lay up

  1734. for yourselves

  1735. treasures on earth

  1736. where moth

  1737. and rust destroy

  1738. and where thieves

  1739. break in and steal,

  1740. but lay up

  1741. for yourselves

  1742. treasures in heaven

  1743. where neither moth

  1744. nor rust destroys,

  1745. where thieves

  1746. do not break in

  1747. and steal.

  1748. Not any punches

  1749. home these points

  1750. by saying,

  1751. For where your

  1752. treasure is,

  1753. there your heart

  1754. will be also.

  1755. If we're set

  1756. on the things

  1757. of this world,

  1758. that's where

  1759. your heart's going

  1760. to be.

  1761. If your mindset

  1762. is gaining

  1763. how much we can

  1764. from the things

  1765. of this life,

  1766. that's where

  1767. our heart's going

  1768. to be.

  1769. If our mind

1770. is set on the Lord,

  1771. on the praises

  1772. of God,

  1773. on the worship

  1774. of God,

  1775. on the service

  1776. of God,

  1777. on the things

  1778. of heaven,

  1779. that's where

  1780. our heart is.

  1781. And serving

  1782. the Lord

  1783. is really

  1784. the same

  1785. as laying

  1786. up for ourselves

  1787. treasures in heaven.

  1788. That's the way

  1789. the Lord

  1790. actually presents

  1791. it to us.

  1792. You could go

  1793. to Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1794. that passage

  1795. where,

  1796. weird of the person

  1797. who had so much

  1798. in the produce

  1799. of his land,

  1800. the man,

  1801. parable of the rich

  1802. fool,

  1803. it's usually called,

  1804. and he says,

  1805. take,

  1806. Jesus said,

  1807. take care,

  1808. be on your guard

  1809. against covetousness,

  1810. all covetousness,

  1811. but one's life

  1812. does not consist

  1813. in the abundance

  1814. of one's possession.

  1815. Then he told them

  1816. a parable saying,

1817. the land of a rich man

  1818. produced plentifully.

1819. And he thought to himself,

  1820. what shall I do?

  1821. I have nowhere

  1822. to store my crops.

  1823. He said,

  1824. I will do this.

  1825. I will tear down

  1826. my barns

  1827. and build larger ones.

1828. And there I will store

  1829. all my grains

  1830. and my goods

  1831. and my goods.

  1832. And I will say

  1833. to my soul,

  1834. soul,

  1835. you have ample goods

1836. laid up for many years.

  1837. Relax,

  1838. eat,

  1839. drink,

  1840. be merry.

  1841. God said to him,

  1842. fool,

  1843. this night your soul

  1844. is required of you.

  1845. And the things

  1846. you have prepared,

  1847. whose will they be?

  1848. So is the one

  1849. who lays up treasure

  1850. for himself

  1851. and is not rich

  1852. towards God.

  1853. Rich

  1854. towards

  1855. God.

  1856. That's the key

  1857. to a happy life.

  1858. Rich

  1859. towards

  1860. God.

  1861. You see that passage,

  1862. this man who had

  1863. this land

  1864. was just

  1865. planning for himself

  1866. how to increase,

  1867. how to grow richer,

  1868. how to get more.

  1869. And all the time

  1870. the Lord was measuring

  1871. his life and saying,

  1872. he doesn't realize

1873. tonight he's going to die.

  1874. And all the things

  1875. he's promised himself,

  1876. they'll be gone.

1877. They won't be in his grasp

  1878. anymore.

  1879. Whose will they be?

  1880. Well,

  1881. what does it matter?

  1882. If we're no longer

  1883. here in this world,

  1884. does it matter really

  1885. whose they will be?

  1886. What matters is

  1887. where we end up,

  1888. isn't it?

  1889. And then 1 Timothy,

  1890. just to show that

  1891. the apostles built

  1892. on the teaching

1893. of the Lord as well.

  1894. 1 Timothy chapter 6

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  1895. and verses 6 to 10.

  1896. This is Timothy

  1897. being advised

  1898. by Paul

  1899. with regard

  1900. to his ministry.

  1901. And Paul regarding

  1902. Timothy's ministry,

  1903. giving all this advice

  1904. to him.

  1905. Teach,

  1906. he says,

  1907. and urge

  1908. these things.

  1909. Amongst them,

1910. he says in verse 6,

1911. Now there is great gain

  1912. and godliness

  1913. with contentment,

  1914. for we brought nothing

  1915. into the world

  1916. and we cannot take

  1917. anything out of it.

1918. But if we have food

  1919. and clothing,

  1920. and with these

  1921. we will be content.

  1922. But those who desire

  1923. to be rich

  1924. fall into temptation,

  1925. into a snare,

  1926. into many senseless

  1927. and harmful desires

  1928. that plunge people

  1929. into ruin

  1930. and destruction.

  1931. for the love

  1932. of money

  1933. is the root

  1934. of all kinds

  1935. of evils.

  1936. It is through

  1937. this craving

  1938. that some have

  1939. wandered away

  1940. from the faith

  1941. and pierced

  1942. themselves

  1943. with many pangs.

  1944. You see,

  1945. that was a problem

  1946. that the apostles

  1947. and Timothy

  1948. had to deal with.

  1949. People who had

1950. been part of the church

  1951. or were part

  1952. of the church

  1953. and were under

  1954. the teaching

  1955. of the gospel,

  1956. but had given

  1957. more time

  1958. and more concern

  1959. for how much money

  1960. they would build up,

1961. how much they would have

  1962. of material things,

  1963. and so they wandered

  1964. away from the faith.

  1965. That's what it's saying.

  1966. That's why it's saying,

  1967. beware of these things.

  1968. And that passage

1969. goes on in verse 17.

  1970. As for the rich

  1971. in this present age,

  1972. now just listen

1973. to the number of times

  1974. the word riches

  1975. or treasure

  1976. is used by Paul

  1977. in these few verses.

  1978. As for the rich

  1979. in this present age,

  1980. charge them

  1981. not to be haughty

1982. nor to set their hopes

  1983. on uncertain riches,

  1984. but on God

  1985. who richly provides us

  1986. with everything to enjoy.

1987. They are to do good,

  1988. to be rich

  1989. in good works,

  1990. to be generous

  1991. and ready to share,

  1992. thus storing up

  1993. treasure,

  1994. riches for themselves

  1995. as a good foundation

  1996. for the future

  1997. so that they may

  1998. take hold of that

  1999. which is truly life.

2000. Let me ask myself today,

  2001. what's my most valuable

  2002. asset in this life?

  2003. Different ways

2004. in which you can reply

  2005. to that

  2006. for yourselves as well.

  2007. What's my most valuable

  2008. asset in this life?

  2009. You might say,

  2010. it's my wife,

  2011. my partner,

  2012. my loved ones

  2013. and of course

  2014. that very much

  2015. comes into the picture.

  2016. But of course

  2017. the Bible tells us

2018. what it has to be God,

  2019. doesn't it?

2020. It has to be the Lord.

2021. It has to be His salvation.

2022. It has to be eternal life

2023. as He provides that for us.

  2024. In Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2025. that chapter that deals

  2026. with so many parables

  2027. that Jesus actually taught.

  2028. Chapter 13 of Matthew,

  2029. the kingdom of heaven

  2030. is like treasure

  2031. hidden in a field

  2032. which a man found

  2033. and covered up.

  2034. Then in his joy

  2035. he goes and sells

  2036. all that he has

  2037. and buys that field.

  2038. And then there's the

2039. parable of the pearl following.

2040. Treasure hidden in a field,

  2041. buried in a field

  2042. which a man found

  2043. and covered up.

  2044. He discovered it

  2045. for himself.

2046. Just read the other day

2047. of a large nugget of gold

  2048. found in England.

  2049. Shropshire

2050. by a man who was out

  2051. along with others

  2052. with a metal detector

2053. and the man actually said

  2054. that the metal detector

  2055. wasn't actually working

  2056. properly even.

  2057. But it pinged

2058. and as he dug down

2059. about six or so inches

  2060. he discovered

2061. this large nugget of gold

  2062. about a bit bigger

  2063. than a 50 pence piece

  2064. which is large

2065. for a nugget of gold.

  2066. It's reckoned to be

2067. the largest nugget of gold

  2068. ever found in England.

2069. And it's going on the market

2070. it's estimated to be worth

  2071. between 30 and 40 thousand pounds.

  2072. What's it worth?

  2073. It's worth between 30 and 40 thousand.

2074. How much is our soul worth?

2075. How much is Jesus worth?

2076. How much is he valuable to us?

  2077. Well surely

2078. in the words of the old

  2079. gospel song

2080. it's for us the way it was

  2081. for this writer.

  2082. I'd rather have Jesus

  2083. than silver or gold.

  2084. I'd rather be his

  2085. than have riches untold.

  2086. I'd rather have Jesus

  2087. than houses or land.

  2088. I'd rather be led

  2089. by his nail-pierced hand.

  2090. I'd rather have Jesus

  2091. than worldly applause.

  2092. I'd rather be faithful

  2093. to his dear cause.

  2094. I'd rather have Jesus

  2095. than worldwide fame.

2096. Yes, I'd rather be true

  2097. to his holy name

2098. than to be the king

  2099. of a vast domain.

2100. And be held in sin's dread sway.

  2101. I'd rather have Jesus

  2102. than anything

  2103. this world affords

  2104. today.

2105. May God bless these thoughts

2106. on his word to us.

  2107. Let's pray.

  2108. Our gracious God,

  2109. we thank you

  2110. for the riches

  2111. of eternal life.

  2112. We bless you

  2113. that you have brought

  2114. these freely to us.

  2115. We give thanks, Lord,

  2116. that your word

  2117. teaches us so often

  2118. of the cost

  2119. of our redemption

2120. to the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

  2121. And therefore, Lord,

  2122. as we consider

  2123. the kind of death

  2124. you died,

  2125. that it was

  2126. a death

  2127. in which the bearing

  2128. of the sin

  2129. of your people

  2130. brought you

  2131. such condemnation

  2132. and such suffering

  2133. and death,

  2134. help us, Lord,

  2135. we pray,

  2136. to value

  2137. all that has been

2138. achieved for us by it.

  2139. Give us today

  2140. to have a mindset

  2141. on the riches

  2142. that are spiritual

  2143. and eternal.

  2144. Nevertheless, Lord,

2145. help us not to despise

  2146. whatever earthly riches

2147. you give us to enjoy,

  2148. but help us

  2149. to use them wisely

  2150. and to be concerned

  2151. that they be used

  2152. for your glory

  2153. and for your praise.

  2154. Receive our thanks,

  2155. now we pray,

  2156. pardoning our sin

  2157. for Jesus' sake.

  2158. Amen.

  2159. We're going to conclude

  2160. our worship this morning

  2161. singing in Psalm 62.

  2162. That's on page 80

  2163. of Psalm 62.

2164. Tune this before the throne

  2165. and verses 7 to 12.

  2166. My honor and salvation

  2167. rest on God,

2168. my rock and mighty fort.

  2169. O people,

  2170. trust in him always.

  2171. To him alone

  2172. pour out your heart.

  2173. The low-born man

  2174. is but a breath.

  2175. The high-born man

  2176. is but a lie.

  2177. Weighed in a balance

  2178. side by side,

  2179. they come to nothing

  2180. but a sigh.

2181. Do not seek after wealth

  2182. by force

2183. or triumph in ill-gotten gain.

  2184. And even though

  2185. your goods increase,

  2186. set not your heart

  2187. on what is vain.

  2188. Verses 7 to 12

  2189. of Psalm 62.

  2190. My honor and salvation

  2191. rest on God,

  2192. O people,

2193. my rock and mighty fort.

  2194. O people,

  2195. trust in him always.

  2196. To him alone

  2197. pour out your heart.

  2198. The low-born man

  2199. is but a breath.

  2200. The high-born man

  2201. is but a lie.

  2202. Within a balance

  2203. side by side,

  2204. they come to nothing

  2205. but a sigh.

  2206. They come to nothing

  2207. but a sigh.

2208. Do not seek after wealth

  2209. by force,

2210. for triumph in ill-gotten gain.

  2211. And even though

  2212. your goods increase,

  2213. set not your heart

  2214. on what is vain.

  2215. My God has spoken,

  2216. I have heard,

  2217. that you are strong

  2218. and loving, Lord,

  2219. each one according

  2220. to his deeds.

  2221. You will assuredly

  2222. reward.

  2223. You will assuredly

  2224. reward.

  2225. After the benediction,

  2226. please allow me

2227. to get to the main door.

  2228. Now may the grace

2229. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

2230. the love of God the Father,

  2231. and the communion

  2232. of the Holy Spirit

  2233. be with you now

  2234. and evermore.

  2235. Amen.

  2236. Amen.

  2237. Amen.
