  1. We'll turn together now to read in God's Word in the Gospel of John, reading in chapter 11.

  2. John chapter 11, we're going to take up our reading at verse 17 and read down to verse 44.

    John 11 chapter mention

  3. The way we take up our reading here is Jesus has already been informed about Lazarus,

  4. who was a good friend of his, along with Mary and Martha, his sisters, Lazarus' sisters,

  5. that Lazarus was unwell and that they were calling for Jesus to come and to help.

  6. And when we take up our reading at verse 17, Jesus has actually been told and is telling them,

  7. as you see in verse 14, that Lazarus has died.

  8. And for your sake, he says, I am glad that I was not there.

  9. So that you may believe.

  10. We take up our reading then in verse 17.

  11. Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  12. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,

  13. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

  14. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him.

  15. But Mary remained seated in the house.

  16. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  17. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

  18. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again.

  19. Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

  20. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

  21. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  22. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  23. Do you believe this?

  24. She said to him, yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.

  25. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private,

  26. the teacher is here and is calling for you.

  27. And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.

  28. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.

  29. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out,

  30. they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

  31. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him,

  32. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  33. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping,

  34. he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.

  35. And he said, where have you laid him?

  36. They said to him, Lord, come and see.

  37. And Jesus wept.

  38. So the Jews said, see how he loved him.

  39. But some of them said, could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man

  40. also have kept this man from dying?

  41. Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb.

  42. It was a cave and a stone lay against it.

  43. Jesus said, take away the stone.

  44. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him,

  45. Lord, by this time there will be an odour, for he has been dead four days.

  46. Jesus said to her, did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?

  47. So they took away the stone, and Jesus lifted up his eyes and said,

  48. Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

  49. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on occasion,

  50. on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.

  51. When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice,

  52. Lazarus, come out.

  53. The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound in linen strips,

  54. and his face wrapped with cloth.

  55. Jesus said to them, unbind him and let him go.

  56. And so on.

  57. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  58. Before we turn back to look at this passage,

  59. we're going to sing again to God's praise in Psalm 16.

  60. In the Sing Psalms version, Psalm 16, we'll sing this psalm in two parts.

  61. Our last singing will also be from this psalm,

  62. but we're going to sing from verse 1 to 7 just now,

  63. page 16 of the psalm books.

  64. Protect me, O my God, you are my refuge through.

  65. I said, you are my Lord, I have no good apart from you.

  66. We'll sing from verse 1 to 7 on the tune of Selma.

  67. We sing to God's praise.

  68. Protect me, O my God, you are my refuge through.

  69. I said, you are my Lord, I have no good apart from you.

  70. The Godly in the land, for holiness renowned,

  71. They are the glorious one in whom almighty light is found.

  72. Their sorrows will increase, who on false gods rely.

  73. I will not sacrifice to them, their worship I defy.

  74. O Lord, you are my cup and portion sure.

  75. The share that is aside to me, you guard and keep secure.

  76. The land allotted me, is it a place inside?

  77. And surely my inheritance to me is a delight.

  78. I'll praise the Lord, my God, whose counsel guides my choice.

  79. And even in the night, my heart recalls instructions voice.

  80. Well, let's turn back to a reading in the Gospel of John, chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  81. We're reading here of Lazarus and Jesus coming to him.

  82. As it would seem almost too late, Lazarus had died.

  83. And yet we are reminded here of the great hope that there is in Christ.

  84. A hope that we will in many ways remember in this coming week as our people,

  85. as we think of Easter week.

  86. And all that it means is a time for close reflection on these things.

  87. It's always a time for it, but perhaps more so even in this week as we hear more of it.

  88. And pray that others would hear of the wonderful message of the power of the resurrection.

  89. And as we read here, the one who is the resurrection and the life.

  90. We're going to read just a few verses from verse 25, where Jesus is speaking to Martha.

  91. Martha.

  92. Jesus said to her,

  93. I am the resurrection and the life.

  94. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  95. Everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  96. Do you believe this?

  97. She said to him,

  98. Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ,

  99. the Son of God who is coming into the world.

  100. Martha is asked a question.

  101. And that's the question I want us to think about ourselves this evening.

  102. In many ways, it's a simple question, but it's based on a very powerful fact.

  103. The fact is that Jesus says,

  104. I am the resurrection and the life.

  105. He is the one who has power over death,

  106. who is able to raise Lazarus from the grave,

  107. who we remember as our risen Savior,

  108. the one who died on the cross for our sins,

  109. but who rose on the third day.

  110. And the question that comes from that is this.

  111. Do you believe this?

  112. Do you believe this?

  113. Do you believe this?

  114. And it's a question for us to reflect on,

  115. always at all times,

  116. but especially in this week ahead.

  117. Do you believe this?

  118. All that you hear about Christ and his resurrection.

  119. Emotions are always a big part of our lives.

  120. We go through all kinds of different emotions and experiences in life.

  121. There are times when we are happy and glad,

  122. and there are times when we are sorrowful and sad.

  123. But what makes a difference to us when we ask,

  124. well, what makes you happy?

  125. What makes you glad?

  126. Or what makes you sorrowful?

  127. What makes you sad?

  128. There'll be times when we maybe have different answers

  129. from one another to what makes us happy

  130. and also what makes us sad.

  131. But there are certain events in our lives

  132. that will be the same for us all.

  133. events that fill us with great joy

  134. and events that fill us with great sorrow.

  135. And as you read through this passage in John 11,

  136. what emotion does it bring to you, if any?

  137. Does it bring any emotion to your heart

  138. as you read through these words?

  139. It may be that as you read through this passage,

  140. you enter into the experience of sorrow and sadness

  141. as you read about Lazarus and his death

  142. and the impact this has on Mary and Martha

  143. and also the Lord himself

  144. and the many friends that gathered around

  145. and wept with them.

  146. It's a passage that can make you sad.

  147. That's one perspective on it.

  148. If we look at it from a human perspective, that is.

  149. But we can also look at it from another perspective.

  150. And that is as we read these words of Jesus

  151. when he says, I am the resurrection and the life.

  152. Jesus has these I am sayings in the Gospel of John.

  153. And they explain to us things that he is

  154. and that we cannot be.

  155. Things that he is for us

  156. and that if we put our trust in him,

  157. he gives us this hope.

  158. And this is one of these powerful I am sayings.

  159. I am the resurrection and the life.

  160. And it speaks into the midst of this time of sorrow

  161. for our grieving family.

  162. It speaks to them in a powerful way,

  163. but they don't even realize immediately

  164. just how powerfully Jesus is going to minister to them.

  165. But they come to believe.

  166. Even before they see the power of what Jesus does,

  167. they believe.

  168. That's the reply of Martha in verse 27.

  169. Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ.

  170. And they have this hope,

  171. both Mary and Martha have this hope

  172. that the Lord can make a difference for them

  173. in the midst of their sorrow.

  174. And so what perspective do we have

  175. on these events here?

  176. And do they affect us?

  177. Or how do they affect us?

  178. There are many events that happen in this world.

  179. Events that when they happen,

  180. we can maybe think,

  181. it's really got nothing to do with me.

  182. It's got no impact on me personally.

  183. That is at first.

  184. You think even of events in our world

  185. that go on almost week by week at the moment.

  186. You think of what happened in Moscow just now,

  187. the great tragedy that unfolded there

  188. with so much loss of life.

  189. You think of the conflicts going on

  190. between the Ukraine and Russia

  191. in the Middle East

  192. and in other parts of the world as well.

  193. You think of little things

  194. like you hear in the news

  195. that ships cannot really get safely through

  196. the Red Sea just now

  197. because of fear of being attacked.

  198. So they've got to sail around South Africa,

  199. a much longer journey.

  200. You think of times

  201. when you hear of hurricanes

  202. affecting the east coast of America.

  203. And all of these events

  204. are events that we're hearing regularly at times

  205. and we see happening in our world,

  206. but our attitude can be one of,

  207. well, it doesn't really impact me.

  208. That's all happening at a distance

  209. in other parts of the world,

  210. far away from me and my situation

  211. here in Stornoway.

  212. But that's if you look at it

  213. just from a close perspective to ourselves.

  214. Because if you look at it

  215. from another perspective,

  216. a bigger perspective,

  217. you see that all these things

  218. actually do impact our lives.

  219. What's happening in the conflicts,

  220. the wars that are taking place just now,

  221. the fact that ships cannot sail

  222. through the Red Sea.

  223. No impact on us?

  224. Well, if you look at your shelves

  225. in the supermarkets,

  226. you look at the prices of food

  227. and other supplies,

  228. you see maybe foods

  229. that you used to be able to get,

  230. you can't.

  231. Or the prices have risen significantly.

  232. We've all seen these impacts.

  233. You think of a hurricane

  234. that hits the east coast of America.

  235. America.

  236. How often do we start wondering,

  237. will we get the tail end of it?

  238. Will it come our direction?

  239. At the time, we can think

  240. it's far away from us.

  241. It doesn't impact us.

  242. But actually, it does.

  243. And so as you read through

  244. this passage here in John,

  245. you can think of it

  246. in these two different ways as well.

  247. You can think of it,

  248. well, this is just something

  249. that doesn't really impact me.

  250. This is something that only impacted

  251. Mary and Martha and Lazarus.

  252. Or it was only for Jesus' day.

  253. You can think of it in that way.

  254. Or you can think of it

  255. in what it's actually saying to us.

  256. That is continuing to speak

  257. to generation after generation.

  258. And to ourselves this evening,

  259. it continues to speak to us.

  260. In a week when we approach Easter,

  261. when our thoughts are turned,

  262. directed towards events in Jerusalem

  263. on the cross at Calvary

  264. and at the empty tomb

  265. 2,000 years ago

  266. in a far-off land,

  267. does that not impact us?

  268. You can think,

  269. well, it's got nothing to do with me.

  270. But it does.

  271. Because the impact of these events

  272. comes to us all.

  273. They speak to us,

  274. not just to Mary and Martha

  275. and the loss of their brother.

  276. It speaks to us

  277. about the reality of death.

  278. But it speaks to us

  279. of the reality of Jesus.

  280. And it speaks to us

  281. of Jesus as He says,

  282. I am the resurrection

  283. and the life.

  284. Whoever believes in Me,

  285. though he die,

  286. yet shall he live.

  287. And everyone who lives

  288. and believes in Me

  289. shall never die.

  290. speaks to us

  291. about death.

  292. It's more than a question

  293. to Martha.

  294. Jesus is saying,

  295. do you believe this?

  296. He's not just saying it to Martha.

  297. He's saying it to you.

  298. He's saying it to me.

  299. He's asking that question

  300. of us all.

  301. Do you see

  302. the impact

  303. of this event?

  304. The death

  305. of Lazarus

  306. and Jesus

  307. calling him

  308. out of the tomb.

  309. And how it relates

  310. to Easter,

  311. to Jesus Himself

  312. giving His life

  313. for us,

  314. dying on the cross

  315. at Calvary,

  316. being placed

  317. in a tomb Himself,

  318. but coming out

  319. of that tomb,

  320. rising from the grave.

  321. Do you believe

  322. this?

  323. Do you believe

  324. that this is for

  325. life,

  326. for you?

  327. So when it comes

  328. to our time

  329. when we die,

  330. these words,

  331. as we so often

  332. quote them

  333. at funerals,

  334. these words

  335. will reflect

  336. our life,

  337. your life

  338. and mine,

  339. that it will be said

  340. of us,

  341. though he die,

  342. though she die,

  343. yet shall he live,

  344. yet shall she live

  345. through Christ.

  346. Why?

  347. Because He is

  348. the resurrection

  349. and the life.

  350. There is sorrow

  351. in this passage.

  352. But there is also

  353. hope,

  354. hope of glory

  355. in Christ,

  356. because He is

  357. the resurrection

  358. and the life.

  359. So it speaks

  360. to us

  361. of our life

  362. and our eternity.

  363. And it reminds us,

  364. too,

  365. of our responsibility

  366. to all around us

  367. to make this message

  368. known,

  369. even as we think

  370. of these invitations,

  371. to think even

  372. in light

  373. of this passage

  374. as Jesus says.

  375. I am the resurrection

  376. and the life.

  377. Do you believe this?

  378. Well,

  379. come and hear

  380. about it.

  381. Come and see this

  382. for yourself.

  383. Come and hear

  384. this glorious message

  385. of hope,

  386. even for the darkest

  387. of times.

  388. And so there's three points

  389. in this passage

  390. for us this evening

  391. I want to take.

  392. We have first

  393. the pain,

  394. the pain that is evident

  395. here in this passage.

  396. Then we have

  397. the power

  398. and then we have

  399. the plea.

  400. The pain,

  401. the power,

  402. and the plea.

  403. There are many kinds

  404. of pain

  405. that we suffer

  406. in life.

  407. There are many kinds

  408. of physical pains

  409. that we suffer.

  410. maybe if you're

  411. into DIY,

  412. you've hit your thumb

  413. with a hammer

  414. at some point

  415. and you know

  416. the pain

  417. that that brings.

  418. Maybe you're suffering

  419. different kinds

  420. of pains

  421. yourself just now.

  422. Joint pains,

  423. stabbing pains,

  424. sore heads.

  425. We go through

  426. all kinds

  427. of physical pain.

  428. And when we have

  429. these kinds of pain,

  430. we want to either

  431. take something

  432. to help that pain

  433. or to do something

  434. about that pain

  435. being eased

  436. for us.

  437. But there are

  438. other pains

  439. that we suffer

  440. as well.

  441. Pains that maybe

  442. aren't as obvious

  443. or even as clear

  444. to those

  445. around us.

  446. The pain

  447. of anxiety,

  448. the pain

  449. of illness,

  450. the pain

  451. of grief

  452. and sorrow.

  453. The pain

  454. that the psalm

  455. that we sang,

  456. Psalm 116,

  457. spoke about.

  458. The pains

  459. of hell

  460. took hold

  461. of me.

  462. I grief

  463. and trouble

  464. found.

  465. These pains

  466. that come our way.

  467. But in the psalm

  468. as we sang,

  469. we saw the psalmist

  470. was able to cry out

  471. to the Lord

  472. in the midst

  473. of this.

  474. And there is pain

  475. in this passage

  476. for us.

  477. There is the pain

  478. that Mary

  479. and Martha

  480. were experiencing

  481. at this time.

  482. The pain

  483. of their brother,

  484. the one they loved,

  485. who was ill,

  486. and ultimately

  487. who we see

  488. Jesus reminding us

  489. who had died.

  490. There is the pain

  491. of grief.

  492. There is the pain

  493. of their weeping

  494. as they would go

  495. to the tomb.

  496. He had been in the tomb

  497. for four days

  498. before Jesus

  499. arrived there.

  500. There was this pain.

  501. There was this heartache.

  502. There was this sorrow.

  503. They loved him.

  504. And we are reminded

  505. as we read of earlier

  506. on in the passage,

  507. we didn't read it,

  508. that Jesus loved him

  509. as well.

  510. In verse 3,

  511. so the sisters

  512. sent to him

  513. saying,

  514. Lord,

  515. he whom you love

  516. is ill.

  517. Jesus had a love

  518. not just for Mary

  519. and Martha

  520. but Lazarus too.

  521. They were obviously

  522. close.

  523. And we read

  524. that later on

  525. that Jesus himself

  526. wept here.

  527. So there was this love

  528. and what you expect

  529. was that maybe

  530. Jesus would come running

  531. but instead

  532. he delayed,

  533. he stayed.

  534. In verse 6,

  535. you read there

  536. when he heard

  537. that Lazarus

  538. was ill,

  539. he stayed

  540. two days longer

  541. in the place

  542. where he was.

  543. How strange.

  544. Why didn't he just come

  545. immediately

  546. knowing Lazarus,

  547. his friend,

  548. was ill?

  549. We are told

  550. a little of why

  551. in verse 4.

  552. But when Jesus heard it,

  553. he said,

  554. this illness

  555. does not lead to death

  556. for it is for the glory

  557. of God

  558. so that the Son of God

  559. may be glorified

  560. through it.

  561. Something powerful

  562. was going to come

  563. from this.

  564. But yet it's in the midst

  565. of pain.

  566. For in the midst

  567. of Lazarus' illness,

  568. Jesus speaks

  569. and says

  570. he has died.

  571. He is dead.

  572. But he hadn't come.

  573. He hadn't come.

  574. And this obviously

  575. grieves both

  576. Martha and Mary

  577. when they say to him,

  578. Lord,

  579. if you had been here,

  580. my brother

  581. would not have died.

  582. does he not care?

  583. Has he no compassion

  584. in the midst of this?

  585. Why is he not rushing

  586. to their aid?

  587. Pain brings questions.

  588. And the question here is,

  589. why, Lord?

  590. Why, Lord,

  591. didn't you come?

  592. Why didn't you help?

  593. Even the people

  594. around them

  595. were saying,

  596. could not he

  597. who opened the eyes

  598. of the blind man

  599. also have kept

  600. this man from dying?

  601. Even the crowd

  602. that was aware

  603. of this

  604. in verse 36.

  605. Why?

  606. Does he not care?

  607. Well,

  608. we're looking at it

  609. from a human

  610. perspective here.

  611. When we think,

  612. why?

  613. Why didn't he come?

  614. It's a very personal

  615. and individual experience,

  616. pain and sorrow

  617. and grief.

  618. But Jesus is seeing this

  619. from a much greater perspective.

  620. The perspective of verse 4,

  621. that this would work

  622. for glory.

  623. This is why he came.

  624. This is why he came

  625. into this world,

  626. that people in the midst

  627. of grief and sorrow

  628. and pain and sin

  629. might know

  630. that he is one

  631. who is able to deal

  632. with all of these things.

  633. That's why,

  634. as we read through

  635. this passage,

  636. the cross

  637. is looming large

  638. in the background

  639. here as well.

  640. When you think of

  641. Jesus' own suffering

  642. and death

  643. being laid

  644. in the grave

  645. and rising again

  646. from the dead,

  647. it's so much clearer

  648. for us

  649. when we look ahead

  650. and see that.

  651. But in the midst

  652. of this,

  653. this time,

  654. it's sorrow

  655. and pain.

  656. One commentator

  657. puts it like this.

  658. He says,

  659. He, Jesus,

  660. knew that only

  661. when it was darkest

  662. does the light

  663. shine most brightly

  664. against the backdrop

  665. of oppressive

  666. darkness of death.

  667. Christ would shine

  668. the light of his power

  669. on his friend.

  670. into this darkness

  671. that Jesus seemingly

  672. was keeping himself

  673. away from,

  674. there is a light

  675. going to come

  676. as Jesus shows

  677. what he can do.

  678. And it's a reminder

  679. to us

  680. that Jesus knows

  681. your pain

  682. and mine

  683. because there is

  684. no one of us

  685. who can avoid

  686. this pain,

  687. this pain

  688. of grief

  689. at some point,

  690. maybe even now

  691. you know it

  692. and know its pain,

  693. know the hurt

  694. that grief brings.

  695. Either recently,

  696. in the last few weeks,

  697. even years gone by,

  698. we've experienced it

  699. or we will experience it.

  700. And you know

  701. how that pain rises

  702. and the grief

  703. it brings,

  704. the tears

  705. it brings.

  706. And you can maybe

  707. even cry out,

  708. God,

  709. do you not care?

  710. God,

  711. do you not know

  712. what I am going through?

  713. But this reminds us

  714. he does.

  715. He does.

  716. Because when Jesus says,

  717. I am,

  718. he is reminding us

  719. of the one

  720. who knows.

  721. When God spoke

  722. to Moses,

  723. as Moses was called

  724. to lead the Exodus,

  725. Moses,

  726. Moses asked him

  727. a question,

  728. who will I say

  729. that sent me?

  730. God's response is,

  731. I am

  732. has sent you.

  733. The great

  734. I am,

  735. the one who knows

  736. the suffering

  737. of his people.

  738. The one who we see

  739. in the Gospel of John

  740. earlier in chapter 3,

  741. speak of

  742. the God who knows

  743. the pain

  744. and consequences

  745. of death.

  746. death.

  747. And yet says,

  748. for God so loved

  749. the world

  750. that he gave

  751. his only son,

  752. that whoever

  753. believes in him

  754. should not perish,

  755. but have

  756. eternal life.

  757. Pain

  758. is real.

  759. Grief

  760. is real.

  761. But how do we

  762. respond?

  763. Where do we

  764. turn?

  765. Well,

  766. here we see

  767. the one who has

  768. the power

  769. over this pain.

  770. And that's the

  771. second thing

  772. we see here.

  773. We still have

  774. that question,

  775. why he delayed,

  776. why he put

  777. Mary and Martha

  778. through this pain,

  779. maybe even as

  780. Lazarus was ill

  781. and he still

  782. had his senses.

  783. He was wondering,

  784. where is Jesus?

  785. He could help.

  786. And in these

  787. circumstances,

  788. it could be

  789. difficult to believe

  790. that in the

  791. goodness of God,

  792. in the goodness

  793. of this Christ

  794. who came into

  795. the world,

  796. but who seemed

  797. to be turning

  798. his back

  799. in their greatest

  800. time of need.

  801. But there was

  802. a purpose

  803. here.

  804. Jesus had

  805. his purposes

  806. here that we

  807. only begin to see

  808. as he comes

  809. into their midst.

  810. many of you

  811. will be familiar

  812. with the poem,

  813. The Weaver's Shuttle.

  814. Part of it

  815. says this,

  816. Not till the

  817. loom is silent

  818. and the shuttle

  819. cease to fly,

  820. will God

  821. unroll the canvas

  822. and reveal

  823. the reason why.

  824. The dark threads

  825. are as needful

  826. in the weaver's

  827. skillful hand

  828. as the threads

  829. of gold and silver

  830. in the pattern

  831. he has planned.

  832. And that's the

  833. threads that you

  834. see here.

  835. There's the

  836. dark threads,

  837. the sorrow

  838. and the grief

  839. that Mary and

  840. Martha are

  841. suffering.

  842. But then you

  843. have these threads

  844. of gold and

  845. silver,

  846. of Jesus

  847. coming and

  848. showing the

  849. power that

  850. he has.

  851. The one who

  852. comes and

  853. says,

  854. I am the

  855. resurrection

  856. and the

  857. life.

  858. the one who

  859. shows the

  860. power that

  861. he has.

  862. Again,

  863. one commentator

  864. puts it like

  865. this,

  866. Christ delayed

  867. coming to

  868. his faithful,

  869. loving followers

  870. in Bethany

  871. in order to

  872. strengthen their

  873. love and

  874. their faith.

  875. And God

  876. can put us

  877. through things,

  878. things that we

  879. don't understand

  880. even for a

  881. long time after

  882. we don't

  883. understand,

  884. but they

  885. are there to

  886. strengthen our

  887. love and

  888. our faith for

  889. him.

  890. In John's

  891. Gospel, as

  892. we're reading

  893. through here,

  894. this is the

  895. last and the

  896. ultimate miracle

  897. that Jesus

  898. performs.

  899. And isn't it

  900. amazing just

  901. how it shows

  902. us what

  903. Christ himself

  904. had come

  905. to do.

  906. It's more

  907. than just

  908. words.

  909. words that

  910. say he

  911. is able

  912. to give

  913. life.

  914. Here we

  915. see the

  916. power of

  917. these words.

  918. How does

  919. he show

  920. this power?

  921. Well, he

  922. tells us

  923. again and

  924. again through

  925. this passage,

  926. you have it

  927. just to select

  928. a few verses,

  929. 15, 26,

  930. 42.

  931. They all

  932. speak about

  933. the purpose

  934. that the

  935. people might

  936. believe.

  937. Believe that

  938. God has

  939. sent his

  940. son to

  941. give us

  942. life.

  943. And he

  944. shows this

  945. power in

  946. verse 33.

  947. He says,

  948. when Jesus

  949. saw their

  950. weeping and

  951. the Jews

  952. who had

  953. come with

  954. are also

  955. weeping,

  956. he was

  957. deeply moved

  958. and greatly

  959. troubled.

  960. We see

  961. power initially

  962. is fixed in

  963. this emotion,

  964. this weeping,

  965. this sorrow.

  966. But then

  967. it comes

  968. to the

  969. point where

  970. he asks,

  971. where have

  972. you laid

  973. him?

  974. In verse

  975. 34.

  976. He said to

  977. him,

  978. Lord,

  979. come and

  980. see.

  981. And Jesus

  982. wept.

  983. And he's in

  984. the midst of

  985. this, you've

  986. got this

  987. voice behind

  988. him saying,

  989. could not

  990. he who

  991. opened the

  992. eyes of the

  993. blind have

  994. kept this

  995. man from

  996. dying?

  997. the sisters

  998. who are

  999. saying,

  1000. if you

  1001. had been

  1002. here,

  1003. he would

  1004. not have

  1005. died.

  1006. There's so

  1007. much doubt,

  1008. there's so

  1009. much fear

  1010. in this

  1011. passage.

  1012. And yet

  1013. Jesus reminds

  1014. them of

  1015. his power.

  1016. And he

  1017. says,

  1018. take away

  1019. the stone.

  1020. Take away

  1021. the stone.

  1022. And they

  1023. said,

  1024. well,

  1025. he's been

  1026. dead four

  1027. days,

  1028. there's going

  1029. to be a

  1030. stench.

  1031. But Jesus

  1032. says,

  1033. did you not

  1034. believe that

  1035. you would

  1036. see the

  1037. glory of

  1038. God?

  1039. And how

  1040. he lifts

  1041. his eyes

  1042. in verse

  1043. 41,

  1044. Father,

  1045. I thank

  1046. you that

  1047. you have

  1048. heard me.

  1049. There is

  1050. a power

  1051. of God

  1052. present

  1053. here.

  1054. And then

  1055. at the

  1056. end of

  1057. verse 43,

  1058. he cried

  1059. out with

  1060. a loud

  1061. voice,

  1062. Lazarus,

  1063. come

  1064. out.

  1065. Lazarus,

  1066. come

  1067. out.

  1068. You can

  1069. imagine,

  1070. or even

  1071. try to

  1072. imagine,

  1073. the people

  1074. around about

  1075. him.

  1076. What is

  1077. he doing?

  1078. He's been

  1079. dead for

  1080. four days.

  1081. Lazarus,

  1082. come

  1083. out.

  1084. Matthew

  1085. Henry,

  1086. who wrote

  1087. a commentary

  1088. on the

  1089. whole

  1090. Bible,

  1091. he says

  1092. when he's

  1093. writing about

  1094. John's

  1095. gospel on

  1096. this occasion

  1097. of Lazarus'

  1098. death,

  1099. he says

  1100. Jesus had

  1101. to say,

  1102. Lazarus,

  1103. come forth.

  1104. Because if

  1105. he had

  1106. just said,

  1107. come forth,

  1108. then all

  1109. the dead

  1110. would have

  1111. come out

  1112. of their

  1113. grave.

  1114. Because that

  1115. is the

  1116. power that

  1117. Jesus has.

  1118. He had

  1119. to be

  1120. specific

  1121. to

  1122. Lazarus.

  1123. But that

  1124. reminds us

  1125. that a day

  1126. is coming

  1127. when the

  1128. Lord will

  1129. say,

  1130. come out,

  1131. and all

  1132. the graves,

  1133. all the

  1134. dead

  1135. will rise.

  1136. Because that

  1137. is his

  1138. power.

  1139. That is

  1140. the power

  1141. that Jesus

  1142. Christ has.

  1143. The power

  1144. that was

  1145. shown here

  1146. is a power

  1147. that we

  1148. will see

  1149. one day

  1150. when he

  1151. calls every

  1152. one of us

  1153. to account

  1154. before him.

  1155. Come

  1156. out.

  1157. He'll be

  1158. calling us

  1159. out to

  1160. face the

  1161. judgment.

  1162. Do you

  1163. believe this?

  1164. Because that

  1165. is what

  1166. the

  1167. scriptures

  1168. say.

  1169. And the

  1170. power

  1171. that Jesus

  1172. had and

  1173. cried out

  1174. come out

  1175. and says

  1176. in verse

  1177. 44,

  1178. the man

  1179. who had

  1180. died

  1181. came out.

  1182. He walked

  1183. out of

  1184. the grave.

  1185. He slit

  1186. the strips

  1187. on his

  1188. body,

  1189. his face

  1190. wrapped

  1191. with cloth,

  1192. and yet he

  1193. walked out

  1194. alive.

  1195. That is

  1196. the power

  1197. that Christ

  1198. has.

  1199. Joni

  1200. Erickson

  1201. Tadda,

  1202. a Christian

  1203. lady,

  1204. an author

  1205. of many

  1206. books,

  1207. she was

  1208. paralyzed

  1209. in a

  1210. diving

  1211. accident.

  1212. And when

  1213. asked what

  1214. her favorite

  1215. verse is,

  1216. she often

  1217. always replies,

  1218. Philippians 3,

    Philippians 3:10

  1219. verse 10.

  1220. What does

  1221. that verse

  1222. say?

  1223. I want

  1224. to know

  1225. Christ

  1226. and the

  1227. power

  1228. of his

  1229. resurrection.

  1230. I want

  1231. to know

  1232. Christ

  1233. and the

  1234. power

  1235. of his

  1236. resurrection.

  1237. To you,

  1238. the reason

  1239. why Joni

  1240. Erickson

  1241. Tadda

  1242. wants to

  1243. know it

  1244. is so

  1245. much.

  1246. It's not

  1247. for selfish

  1248. reasons,

  1249. but for the

  1250. glory of

  1251. Christ.

  1252. because she

  1253. is paralyzed.

  1254. She knows

  1255. that the

  1256. power of

  1257. his

  1258. resurrection

  1259. is what

  1260. will give

  1261. her new

  1262. life,

  1263. new hope.

  1264. She said,

  1265. in suffering,

  1266. we also

  1267. die to

  1268. worry.

  1269. We die

  1270. to fear.

  1271. We die

  1272. to grumbling

  1273. about the

  1274. inconvenience

  1275. of the

  1276. weight of

  1277. our cross.

  1278. We die

  1279. to thinking

  1280. that Jesus

  1281. doesn't

  1282. care.

  1283. What's

  1284. suffering?

  1285. Is she

  1286. talking

  1287. about

  1288. there?

  1289. Not

  1290. her own,

  1291. but the

  1292. sufferings

  1293. of Christ

  1294. and sharing

  1295. in his

  1296. sufferings.

  1297. She wants

  1298. to know

  1299. the power

  1300. of his

  1301. resurrection,

  1302. the power

  1303. that we

  1304. see here,

  1305. the power

  1306. that says,

  1307. Lazarus,

  1308. come out.

  1309. Come out

  1310. and live

  1311. because I

  1312. am the

  1313. resurrection

  1314. and the

  1315. life,

  1316. Jesus

  1317. sees.

  1318. He has

  1319. the power.

  1320. The final

  1321. thing I want

  1322. us to

  1323. think about

  1324. is the

  1325. plea.

  1326. As we

  1327. come to

  1328. the conclusion

  1329. here,

  1330. we think of

  1331. the plea

  1332. that Jesus

  1333. gives.

  1334. We know

  1335. the pain

  1336. of this

  1337. situation.

  1338. We see

  1339. the power

  1340. of Christ

  1341. in calling

  1342. him out,

  1343. but we

  1344. come back

  1345. to the

  1346. question.

  1347. When

  1348. Jesus

  1349. says,

  1350. I am

  1351. the

  1352. resurrection

  1353. and the

  1354. life,

  1355. whoever

  1356. believes in

  1357. me,

  1358. though he

  1359. die,

  1360. yet shall

  1361. he live.

  1362. And everyone

  1363. who lives

  1364. and believes

  1365. in me

  1366. shall never

  1367. die.

  1368. What is

  1369. the question?

  1370. Do you

  1371. believe

  1372. this?

  1373. Martha's

  1374. reply is,

  1375. yes,

  1376. Lord.

  1377. I believe

  1378. that you

  1379. are the

  1380. Christ,

  1381. the Son

  1382. of God

  1383. who is

  1384. coming into

  1385. the world.

  1386. What's

  1387. your

  1388. response

  1389. to that

  1390. question

  1391. tonight?

  1392. To the

  1393. resurrection?

  1394. To the

  1395. thought of

  1396. eternal

  1397. life?

  1398. What do

  1399. all these

  1400. things mean?

  1401. What does

  1402. Easter mean?

  1403. what is

  1404. the purpose

  1405. in it?

  1406. Is it

  1407. just a

  1408. holiday?

  1409. Is it

  1410. a time

  1411. for us

  1412. to have

  1413. events

  1414. in our

  1415. communities

  1416. that

  1417. many few

  1418. tie into

  1419. the real

  1420. meaning

  1421. of Easter?

  1422. Or is

  1423. it to

  1424. remember

  1425. the one

  1426. who is

  1427. the

  1428. resurrection

  1429. and the

  1430. life?

  1431. The only

  1432. one who

  1433. is our

  1434. hope

  1435. in death

  1436. and life.

  1437. do we

  1438. believe

  1439. in him?

  1440. Someone

  1441. once

  1442. illustrated

  1443. our lives

  1444. as a

  1445. 24-hour

  1446. period

  1447. we live,

  1448. saying it

  1449. will take

  1450. us

  1451. 78.4

  1452. years

  1453. to live

  1454. that 24

  1455. hours.

  1456. If we're

  1457. lucky enough

  1458. to live

  1459. that long,

  1460. each hour

  1461. represents

  1462. 3.267

  1463. years

  1464. of life

  1465. lived.

  1466. So you're

  1467. looking at

  1468. your life

  1469. as a

  1470. 24-hour

  1471. clock.

  1472. By 3

  1473. a.m.,

  1474. you've

  1475. lived

  1476. almost

  1477. 10

  1478. years.

  1479. When

  1480. you reach

  1481. the age

  1482. of 20

  1483. years old,

  1484. you're at

  1485. 624 in

  1486. the morning.

  1487. The age

  1488. of 30,

  1489. you're just

  1490. after 9

  1491. a.m.

  1492. in the

  1493. morning.

  1494. You seem

  1495. to have

  1496. almost the

  1497. whole day

  1498. ahead of

  1499. you.

  1500. So much

  1501. time to

  1502. go.

  1503. At the

  1504. age of

  1505. 40,

  1506. it's just

  1507. past

  1508. midday.

  1509. When you

  1510. reach the

  1511. age of

  1512. 50,

  1513. you're

  1514. looking at

  1515. the clock

  1516. and it

  1517. shows the

  1518. time of

  1519. 20 past

  1520. 3 in

  1521. the afternoon.

  1522. You're

  1523. approaching

  1524. dinner time

  1525. in your

  1526. life.

  1527. Less than

  1528. 9 hours

  1529. remaining in

  1530. your life

  1531. on the

  1532. 24-hour

  1533. clock.

  1534. A person

  1535. of 60

  1536. years old

  1537. is looking

  1538. at the

  1539. clock and

  1540. it shows

  1541. 622

  1542. p.m.,

  1543. less than

  1544. 6 hours

  1545. remaining on

  1546. the 24-hour

  1547. clock.

  1548. It's a

  1549. striking thought

  1550. when you

  1551. think of

  1552. your life

  1553. in that

  1554. way.

  1555. But it's

  1556. a reminder

  1557. how quickly

  1558. our lives

  1559. will pass

  1560. us by.

  1561. And where

  1562. are you

  1563. on that

  1564. clock?

  1565. Because the

  1566. clock is

  1567. always

  1568. ticking.

  1569. But there's

  1570. something

  1571. missing

  1572. from that

  1573. illustration.

  1574. When you

  1575. think of

  1576. our lives

  1577. 78 years,

  1578. you're

  1579. thinking,

  1580. we've got

  1581. plenty

  1582. time.

  1583. Time to

  1584. live.

  1585. Plenty

  1586. time to

  1587. go.

  1588. What's

  1589. missing is

  1590. the fact

  1591. that at

  1592. any moment

  1593. clock,

  1594. that clock

  1595. could stop.

  1596. Because we're

  1597. reminded so

  1598. often in

  1599. this life

  1600. that life

  1601. is never

  1602. certain,

  1603. that life

  1604. is short.

  1605. we read

  1606. in the

  1607. scriptures so

  1608. often,

  1609. our life

  1610. is but

  1611. a vapor.

  1612. Our life

  1613. is like

  1614. the grass.

  1615. Springs up

  1616. in the

  1617. morning,

  1618. gone in

  1619. the evening.

  1620. Our life

  1621. is very

  1622. much like

  1623. that 24

  1624. hour clock,

  1625. always

  1626. ticking on.

  1627. Where are

  1628. we in

  1629. that time?

  1630. our life

  1631. is but

  1632. a weaving.

  1633. The

  1634. events

  1635. of this

  1636. world

  1637. can seem

  1638. of little

  1639. significance

  1640. to us

  1641. at times

  1642. because we

  1643. seem so

  1644. far removed

  1645. from them.

  1646. And yet

  1647. when we

  1648. look at it

  1649. in the

  1650. bigger picture,

  1651. we see

  1652. everything that

  1653. happens in

  1654. this world

  1655. as

  1656. consequences

  1657. for us.

  1658. And perhaps

  1659. we come

  1660. to the

  1661. resurrection

  1662. of Jesus.

  1663. Perhaps

  1664. we come

  1665. to Easter

  1666. time in

  1667. the thought

  1668. that Christ

  1669. died on

  1670. the cross.

  1671. And it

  1672. seems just

  1673. insignificant

  1674. to us.

  1675. It means

  1676. nothing for

  1677. us,

  1678. it means

  1679. nothing to

  1680. many around

  1681. us.

  1682. But when

  1683. we look at

  1684. the bigger

  1685. picture,

  1686. when we

  1687. are reminded

  1688. of Lazarus

  1689. and Mary

  1690. and Martha

  1691. and the

  1692. pain and

  1693. sorrow,

  1694. they found

  1695. themselves

  1696. in,

  1697. we are

  1698. reminded

  1699. that that

  1700. is our

  1701. lives too.

  1702. The time

  1703. comes when

  1704. the clock

  1705. will stop

  1706. for us.

  1707. And what

  1708. then?

  1709. Is Jesus

  1710. for you

  1711. the resurrection

  1712. and the life,

  1713. the hope

  1714. for now

  1715. and the hope

  1716. for eternity?

  1717. Because that

  1718. is the only

  1719. way to live.

  1720. death.

  1721. What happened

  1722. in Bethany

  1723. 2,000 years

  1724. ago is not

  1725. insignificant.

  1726. Just like

  1727. what happened

  1728. at Calvary

  1729. 2,000 years

  1730. ago is not

  1731. insignificant.

  1732. It's the

  1733. most important

  1734. events in

  1735. this world's

  1736. history that

  1737. Jesus showed

  1738. and reminded

  1739. us that he

  1740. has power

  1741. over our

  1742. greatest pain,

  1743. the pain

  1744. of death,

  1745. and the

  1746. consequences

  1747. of sin.

  1748. He has power

  1749. that we

  1750. might live.

  1751. I am

  1752. the resurrection

  1753. and the life.

  1754. there are the

  1755. facts.

  1756. And the

  1757. question is,

  1758. do you

  1759. believe this?

  1760. Let us

  1761. pray.

  1762. Our

  1763. Father in

  1764. heaven,

  1765. we give you

  1766. thanks for

  1767. your word

  1768. that reminds

  1769. us of your

  1770. wonderful love

  1771. towards us,

  1772. reminds us

  1773. how our

  1774. lives are not

  1775. insignificant in

  1776. your eyes,

  1777. that you

  1778. know our

  1779. every hurt

  1780. and pain

  1781. in us,

  1782. you knew

  1783. Mary and

  1784. Martha's.

  1785. And when it

  1786. seemed like

  1787. you were so

  1788. far away

  1789. from them,

  1790. Lord, you

  1791. were preparing

  1792. things for

  1793. your glory,

  1794. that these

  1795. events would

  1796. have their

  1797. effects for

  1798. many generations

  1799. and even for

  1800. our eternity.

  1801. We thank you

  1802. that it was to

  1803. show your

  1804. power, the

  1805. power over

  1806. death, to

  1807. call out

  1808. Lazarus from

  1809. the grave,

  1810. to remind us

  1811. that you are

  1812. the resurrection

  1813. and the life.

  1814. We pray,

  1815. Lord, that you

  1816. will help us

  1817. even in these

  1818. days ahead,

  1819. we may hear

  1820. so much of

  1821. Easter and

  1822. what it

  1823. entails,

  1824. that we

  1825. would remember

  1826. the greatest

  1827. and most

  1828. powerful message

  1829. behind it

  1830. all, that

  1831. you gave

  1832. your son

  1833. for this

  1834. world to

  1835. give his

  1836. life.

  1837. On the

  1838. third day

  1839. he rose

  1840. again.

  1841. He is

  1842. victorious

  1843. and help

  1844. us to find

  1845. our victory

  1846. in him.

  1847. So hear us,

  1848. Lord, we pray,

  1849. and go before

  1850. us now as we

  1851. ask it all in

  1852. Jesus' name.

  1853. Amen.

  1854. We're going to

  1855. conclude by

  1856. singing in

  1857. Psalm 16

  1858. again in the

  1859. Sing Psalms,

  1860. page 17 of

  1861. the Psalm

  1862. books.

  1863. Psalm 16

  1864. on verse

  1865. 8 down to

  1866. the end of

  1867. the Psalm.

  1868. The tune is

  1869. Golden Hill,

  1870. and these

  1871. wonderful words

  1872. remind us that

  1873. Jesus is the

  1874. resurrection and

  1875. the life, and

  1876. that we would

  1877. set him

  1878. before us.

  1879. Before me

  1880. constantly I

  1881. set the Lord

  1882. alone, because

  1883. he is at my

  1884. right hand.

  1885. I'll not be

  1886. overthrown.

  1887. Sing these

  1888. four verses to

  1889. God's praise.

  1890. before me

  1891. before me

  1892. constantly

  1893. I

  1894. set the

  1895. Lord

  1896. alone,

  1897. because

  1898. he is

  1899. at my

  1900. right hand.

  1901. I'll not be

  1902. overthrown.

  1903. Therefore

  1904. my heart

  1905. is glad

  1906. my tongue

  1907. with joy

  1908. will sing

  1909. my body

  1910. too

  1911. will

  1912. rest

  1913. secure

  1914. in hope

  1915. and we

  1916. will

  1917. reign

  1918. for

  1919. you

  1920. will

  1921. not

  1922. allow

  1923. my soul

  1924. in death

  1925. to stay

  1926. nor

  1927. will

  1928. you

  1929. leave

  1930. your

  1931. holy

  1932. one

  1933. to see

  1934. the

  1935. tombs

  1936. decay

  1937. you

  1938. have

  1939. made

  1940. Lord

  1941. to me

  1942. the

  1943. power

  1944. of life

  1945. divine

  1946. the
