  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 23, the Sing Psalms version.

  3. You'll find it on the Order of Service or in the Psalm books on page 28.

  4. Psalm 23, the Sing Psalms version.

  5. We're going to sing the whole of this psalm, a great psalm that reminds us of

  6. who the Lord is and how he is, our shepherd, how he watches over us and leads us.

  7. The Lord's my shepherd, no one shall I know.

  8. He makes me lie down where the green pastures grow.

  9. He leads me to rest where the calm waters flow.

  10. We'll stand to sing the whole of this psalm.

  11. The Lord is my shepherd, no one shall I know.

  12. He makes me lie down where the green pastures grow.

  13. He leads me to rest where the calm waters flow.

  14. My wandering steps he brings back to his way.

  15. In straight paths of righteousness making me stay.

  16. Though I walk in death's valley where darkness is near.

  17. Because you are with me, no evil I'll fear.

  18. Your God and your suffering be comfort and cheer.

  19. In the sight of my enemies a table you spread.

  20. The oil of rejoicing you pour on my head.

  21. My cup overflows and I'm graciously fed.

  22. So surely your covenant, mercy and grace.

  23. Will follow me closely in all of my ways.

  24. I will dwell in the house of the Lord all my days.

  25. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  26. Let us pray.

  27. Our Father in heaven as we gather today.

  28. We thank you for the wonder of your creation.

  29. We thank you for the beauty and the stillness of this day.

  30. We thank you that on this Sunday morning, this Lord's Day morning, we can gather in your name.

  31. We can gather with the assurance and the promise that you give in your word that you will be with us.

  32. That you will come near to us as we seek to come near to you.

  33. We thank you for your word and how it reminds us of all the blessings that are ours in Jesus Christ.

  34. Even as we have sung together from this psalm, we are reminded of the wonder of the Lord.

  35. The Lord who is our shepherd.

  36. The Lord who leads us through this life.

  37. He watches over us.

  38. And as we put our trust in him, he gives us every promise and assurance and comfort of the word.

  39. And especially that great comfort of a place for all of his people.

  40. A place that he leads his people to.

  41. His dwelling place forevermore.

  42. And we thank you that that is true because of what he has done for us.

  43. And especially today, we remember the significance of all that's been done for us.

  44. That Jesus came into this world.

  45. That he died on the cross.

  46. That he was buried.

  47. And that he rose again on the third day.

  48. And we thank you that today as we come, especially remembering that,

  49. we are thankful that every Sunday we have that reminder to us.

  50. That he is risen.

  51. And we pray, Lord, that you will bless all that we do in your name today.

  52. Bless us together as families and friends and as a community here, Lord.

  53. We thank you for each other.

  54. We thank you for our young people and pray your blessing on them.

  55. Especially at this holiday time, Lord.

  56. Watch over each one.

  57. And we thank you for our schools, for the teachers and all the staff.

  58. And all the children there.

  59. We pray that they will enjoy a time of holiday just now.

  60. Whether it's staying at home here or going away to different places, Lord.

  61. Keep each one safe and watch over us all.

  62. Thank you for those visiting with us as well, Lord.

  63. And we pray your blessing on each of them as well.

  64. People traveling to and fro, Lord.

  65. Watch over us each one.

  66. Lord, bless us now as we worship your name.

  67. Bless us as we go on in this day, Lord.

  68. Look after us and all our loved ones as we commit them to you.

  69. I think especially for this coming week of James and Donna.

  70. As they will be away as Donna goes through her treatment, Lord.

  71. We pray that you will watch over them.

  72. Bless them.

  73. Uphold them.

  74. And others like them, Lord.

  75. Going through that experience at this time as well, Lord.

  76. We commit all who are unwell.

  77. All who are cast down at this time.

  78. All who are with many different troubles in this life, Lord.

  79. We pray for your comfort and your blessing to each one.

  80. So hear our prayers, Lord, and continue with us now as we ask all of these things for the forgiveness of our sins.

  81. In Jesus' name.

  82. Amen.

  83. Amen.

  84. Well, today is, of course, Easter Sunday.

  85. And it's a special day for us as we come together to remember what the Lord Jesus has done for us.

  86. And today we're going to be looking at a particular story from the Bible.

  87. A story that's often called The Two on the Road to Emmaus.

  88. Two people who were traveling on this journey along the road, leaving Jerusalem and making their way to a place called Emmaus.

  89. And as they were making their way along, Jesus came alongside them.

  90. And it's an amazing story.

  91. But the foundation of this story, as we find it in Luke's Gospel, chapter 24, actually begins with the resurrection on the first day of the week.

  92. And I'm just going to read one verse earlier in Luke, chapter 24, at verse 6.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  93. And that's where it says,

  94. He is not here, but he has risen.

  95. Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee,

  96. that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified,

  97. and on the third day rise.

  98. He is not here, but he is risen.

  99. That is what Easter is about.

  100. Jesus came, he died, he was buried,

  101. but on the third day he rose again.

  102. Who here has ever told a lie?

  103. If you don't put up your hand, you probably are telling a lie.

  104. Who else has maybe heard something that you think is true,

  105. only for it to turn out to be a lie?

  106. Sometimes it's hard to know what to believe and what is truth.

  107. Now, there's a day tomorrow, the 1st of April, it's called April Fool's Day.

  108. And people love to make up stories to try and trick people and to catch people out.

  109. And you'll hear all kinds of different stories being told,

  110. and sometimes it's very difficult to work out what is true and what is a lie.

  111. And we often fall into the trap of believing things that just aren't true,

  112. or not believing things that actually are.

  113. We've been living in Plasterfield for nearly two years now,

  114. and it's been nice getting to know all the neighbours round about there.

  115. There's one in particular, though, when the 1st of April comes,

  116. I'll be a little bit wary about what he might say to me,

  117. whether to believe it's true or not.

  118. I'm expecting a text in early tomorrow morning saying,

  119. the ferry's cancelled.

  120. And I'll be wondering, is that true?

  121. And I think, oh, no, it's so-and-so who's texting.

  122. It's probably just an April Fool's.

  123. But we struggle to know, to believe what is true and what is a lie.

  124. Now, 2,000 years ago, on a Friday, something happened,

  125. something that really changed this world.

  126. And that is that Jesus, who had come into this world,

  127. and he came with a purpose.

  128. He came to give his life for his people.

  129. And so on that Friday, Jesus was crucified.

  130. It was a dark day, a very sad day in many ways,

  131. especially if we didn't understand just why it was happening.

  132. But we know it's true.

  133. It's recorded in history for us.

  134. And many people saw Jesus being put to death.

  135. And then on the Saturday, his body lay in the grave for that day.

  136. But then something amazing happened.

  137. On the Sunday morning, on the third day,

  138. when they went to the tomb to see what was there,

  139. they found the tomb, the stone had been rolled away,

  140. and the tomb was empty.

  141. He had risen.

  142. He was alive.

  143. And he met with people.

  144. And that's not a lie either,

  145. because it's recorded for us here in the Bible.

  146. Many people met with Jesus.

  147. But there are many people who think it is a lie.

  148. And our lives are so often made up of trying to work out

  149. what is true and what is a lie.

  150. And there's actually board games and TV shows

  151. that are based on this kind of idea

  152. of trying to work out what's truth and what's a lie.

  153. There's one TV show called Would I Lie to You?

  154. And on it, you've got two teams of three on each team,

  155. and they're telling stories,

  156. often about themselves and things that they've done.

  157. Sometimes they're telling the truth,

  158. and sometimes they're telling a lie.

  159. And the team opposite them has to try and work out which it is.

  160. And it can be very hard,

  161. because it can be very convincing.

  162. And isn't that the way our lives so often are?

  163. We hear so much,

  164. and we're wondering to ourselves,

  165. what's true and what's a lie?

  166. And as we hear what we read in our Bibles,

  167. we need to believe that this is truth.

  168. This is what is true.

  169. And what these two on the road to Emmaus found

  170. was that as they were on this journey,

  171. after they left Jerusalem,

  172. going to Emmaus,

  173. which is about seven miles of a journey,

  174. so it'll be a bit like walking from here

  175. to Skoltenaloch or Skolavac,

  176. seven miles,

  177. walking all that way,

  178. and plenty time to discuss things.

  179. But as they're on this journey,

  180. Jesus comes alongside them.

  181. But it takes them a little while

  182. to realize just who it is.

  183. But what he does is he speaks to them

  184. about the Bible,

  185. the truth.

  186. And it's the truth,

  187. as we read here,

  188. makes their hearts burn within them.

  189. Their hearts get excited

  190. about what they are hearing

  191. and who it is

  192. that is speaking to them.

  193. It is Jesus,

  194. who they thought was dead,

  195. who is alive,

  196. and he is risen.

  197. And what happens is

  198. their lives are transformed.

  199. And they want to rush back

  200. to Jerusalem

  201. and tell others about him.

  202. Why is Easter important?

  203. Is it because of the holidays,

  204. which are good?

  205. Is it because of the Easter eggs

  206. that you get,

  207. which can be good as well?

  208. Is that why Easter is important?

  209. No, it's about Jesus.

  210. That's what's important about Easter.

  211. That we remember

  212. that Jesus came

  213. to give his life.

  214. That he died,

  215. but that on the third day

  216. he rose again.

  217. And we can rejoice in that.

  218. We can be delighted in that.

  219. That joy that he gave

  220. to the two on the road to Emmaus

  221. can be ours

  222. if we come and believe in him.

  223. So that's the journey

  224. we're going to go on today.

  225. We're going to look at

  226. the two on the road to Emmaus

  227. and we're going to see

  228. three things about them.

  229. They're doubting,

  230. they're searching,

  231. and then they're believing.

  232. And today,

  233. if we're in any of these situations,

  234. maybe we're doubting today.

  235. May we come to search

  236. the word of God

  237. and may we come to believe

  238. in the Jesus who is risen,

  239. who is our Savior.

  240. Well, we're going to read together

  241. just now,

  242. and at this point,

  243. anyone who's going out

  244. to the tweenies

  245. can go out.

  246. We're going to read together

  247. in the Gospel of Luke.

  248. We're going to read

  249. from verse 13

  250. down to verse 24.

  251. So we're going to read

  252. in the Gospel of Luke,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  253. chapter 24,

  254. and at verse 13.

  255. That very day,

  256. two of them were going

  257. to a village named Emmaus,

  258. about seven miles from Jerusalem,

  259. and they were talking

  260. with each other

  261. about all these things

  262. that had happened.

  263. While they were talking

  264. and discussing together,

  265. Jesus himself threw near

  266. and went with them,

  267. but their eyes were kept

  268. from recognizing him.

  269. And he said to them,

  270. what is this conversation

  271. that you are holding

  272. with each other

  273. as you walk?

  274. And they stood still,

  275. looking sad.

  276. Then one of them,

  277. named Cleopas,

  278. answered him,

  279. are you the only visitor

  280. to Jerusalem

  281. who does not know

  282. the things that have happened

  283. there in these days?

  284. And he said to them,

  285. what things?

  286. And they said to him,

  287. concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  288. a man who was a prophet,

  289. mighty indeed,

  290. and word before God

  291. and all the people,

  292. and how our chief priests

  293. and rulers delivered him up

  294. to be condemned to death

  295. and crucified him.

  296. But we had hoped

  297. that he was the one

  298. to redeem Israel.

  299. Yes, and besides all this,

  300. it is now the third day

  301. since these things happened.

  302. Moreover,

  303. some women of our company

  304. amazed us.

  305. They were at the tomb

  306. early in the morning,

  307. and when they did not find

  308. his body,

  309. they came back saying

  310. that they had even seen

  311. a vision of angels

  312. who said that he was alive.

  313. Some of those

  314. who were with us

  315. went to the tomb

  316. and found it

  317. just as the woman had said,

  318. but him they did not see.

  319. But we leave our reading there

  320. at this point.

  321. We're going to come back

  322. and pick it up again.

  323. But in this first reading,

  324. we begin to see

  325. the two on the road to Emmaus,

  326. the journey that they were on,

  327. and just some of the things

  328. that they were talking about.

  329. There are many things

  330. that we hear

  331. and we can find them

  332. hard to believe.

  333. We doubt.

  334. And that's exactly

  335. what these two

  336. on the road to Emmaus

  337. were experiencing.

  338. They were doubting

  339. even the things

  340. that they were heard

  341. from others

  342. who were of their company,

  343. as it says,

  344. others who were friends

  345. of them

  346. who had come

  347. and told them

  348. all these different things

  349. that had happened

  350. and they'd seen

  351. or heard in Jerusalem.

  352. They were doubting

  353. to believe it.

  354. Just like that,

  355. we ourselves

  356. can find things

  357. hard to believe.

  358. For example,

  359. if I was to say to you,

  360. they're going to build

  361. a tunnel

  362. from Stornoway

  363. to Ullapul.

  364. They're going to go

  365. under the minch

  366. with a tunnel

  367. so that we can travel

  368. by car

  369. under the minch

  370. over to the other side.

  371. Would you believe that?

  372. Some people

  373. would want to believe it

  374. so we don't have to go

  375. on the ferry anymore,

  376. especially when the ferry's rough.

  377. It would make getting

  378. back and forth

  379. so much easier.

  380. Other people

  381. wouldn't want to believe it

  382. but say,

  383. oh no,

  384. that would bring

  385. maybe too many people

  386. into the island

  387. or make it too easy.

  388. Others would just say,

  389. oh,

  390. that's ridiculous.

  391. It's just

  392. never going to happen.

  393. That's just

  394. an April Fool's

  395. or I'll believe it

  396. when I see it.

  397. There are things

  398. that we kind of struggle

  399. to work out

  400. just what we want

  401. in these circumstances.

  402. Well,

  403. we meet these two

  404. on the road to Emmaus.

  405. We know one of them

  406. is called Cleopas

  407. though we're not told

  408. the name of the other one.

  409. And they had been

  410. to Jerusalem.

  411. They had been there

  412. for the Passover.

  413. That was

  414. the remembrance

  415. of how God

  416. had helped his people

  417. in the Old Testament

  418. in the time

  419. of the Exodus,

  420. how they had

  421. been helped by God

  422. to get away

  423. from Egypt.

  424. And they were remembering

  425. that by sacrificing

  426. a lamb.

  427. But now as they'd been

  428. to Jerusalem

  429. remembering the Passover,

  430. what they had seen

  431. was this fulfilled.

  432. And Jesus

  433. who had come

  434. to give his life.

  435. And they've seen

  436. so much,

  437. they've heard

  438. so much,

  439. and yet here

  440. they are

  441. coming away

  442. from Jerusalem

  443. on the way

  444. to Emmaus.

  445. And what's

  446. their emotion?

  447. How are they feeling?

  448. Are they happy?

  449. Even when they've heard

  450. that Jesus

  451. may be alive,

  452. you'd think

  453. they would be happy,

  454. but they're not.

  455. They are sad.

  456. They are sad

  457. about what had happened

  458. because they don't

  459. understand it.

  460. They don't realize

  461. just what this means.

  462. And you notice

  463. what they were

  464. talking about.

  465. they were talking

  466. about the things

  467. that had happened

  468. concerning Jesus

  469. as it says

  470. in verse 19.

  471. And it's almost like

  472. they had all

  473. the information.

  474. They had Jesus,

  475. they were talking

  476. about him,

  477. this man

  478. who was a prophet,

  479. who was mighty indeed,

  480. all the things

  481. that he had done.

  482. He was so mighty

  483. in all of these things,

  484. how the chief priests

  485. and the rulers

  486. had delivered him up

  487. to condemn him to death.

  488. They had crucified him.

  489. And it says,

  490. but we had hoped

  491. that he was the one

  492. to redeem his.

  493. He was the one

  494. that they were looking for

  495. and putting their hope on

  496. that he would save

  497. his people.

  498. And yet here they feel

  499. like all their hopes

  500. are dashed.

  501. They're coming away

  502. from Jerusalem

  503. and they've missed

  504. the most important thing.

  505. It reminds me of

  506. when you see

  507. football fans

  508. and they're in the stadium.

  509. They've got the ticket

  510. to go into the stadium

  511. to watch their team play,

  512. but they find their team

  513. losing and losing badly.

  514. And so maybe with

  515. 15 or 20 minutes to go,

  516. they think,

  517. well, what's the point?

  518. My team's lost.

  519. Even if you look back

  520. to the results yesterday,

  521. Newcastle were playing

  522. West Ham.

  523. And with less than 15 minutes

  524. to go,

  525. West Ham are winning

  526. 3-1.

  527. And you can start to see

  528. the fans starting to leave.

  529. They're thinking,

  530. we've lost.

  531. There's no point.

  532. So they go out.

  533. They start coming away

  534. from the stadium.

  535. But as they're making

  536. their way away

  537. from the stadium,

  538. they begin to hear

  539. a cheer go up

  540. as their team

  541. has scored one goal.

  542. And as their team

  543. has scored another.

  544. Newcastle came back

  545. and they won 4-3

  546. in the last minutes.

  547. But fans who left

  548. before the end

  549. because they doubted

  550. that their team

  551. could come back

  552. and win,

  553. they missed it.

  554. And they had to go

  555. on reports

  556. that others would tell them.

  557. And even then,

  558. they maybe wouldn't believe it.

  559. There's no way

  560. that we could come back

  561. and win that game.

  562. And yet,

  563. here are these two

  564. on the road to Emmaus.

  565. They've been in Jerusalem.

  566. They've been in the place

  567. with everything

  568. that was happening.

  569. They've seen so much

  570. that was happening.

  571. And they've even heard

  572. so much about

  573. what has happened.

  574. It even goes so far

  575. as to say that

  576. some of the people

  577. who were with us

  578. came and told us

  579. that his body

  580. was not there,

  581. that the angels

  582. were saying

  583. that he was alive.

  584. And yet,

  585. they dismissed it.

  586. They were doubting.

  587. And yet,

  588. into this,

  589. who is it

  590. that comes

  591. alongside them?

  592. As they're journeying

  593. on the way,

  594. Jesus himself,

  595. it says in verse 15,

  596. drew near

  597. and went with them.

  598. Jesus himself.

  599. And yet,

  600. they didn't recognize him.

  601. They didn't understand.

  602. And they're saying to him,

  603. we hoped

  604. that he was the one

  605. who was going to save us.

  606. And he's there.

  607. He's right beside them.

  608. And yet,

  609. they're still

  610. not believing.

  611. And how close

  612. are we

  613. to salvation today?

  614. How close

  615. are we

  616. to Jesus today?

  617. And still,

  618. we don't believe.

  619. The Bible

  620. tells us.

  621. He is not here.

  622. He is risen.

  623. This morning,

  624. this Sunday morning,

  625. tells us

  626. that he is risen.

  627. It is Easter Sunday.

  628. It reminds us

  629. of all of these things.

  630. And yet,

  631. still,

  632. we don't believe.

  633. We're so close

  634. to the truth.

  635. We're hearing the truth.

  636. And yet,

  637. we're still saying

  638. to ourselves,

  639. but it's a lie.

  640. It can't be true.

  641. Well,

  642. that's the experience

  643. of these two

  644. on the road

  645. to Emmaus.

  646. That's our first experience,

  647. doubt.

  648. They don't believe

  649. that this can be true.

  650. And for ourselves,

  651. that might be

  652. our experience

  653. today as well.

  654. Maybe we don't believe

  655. that this

  656. can be true.

  657. Well,

  658. there is truth

  659. here

  660. for us.

  661. And before we go on

  662. to the next stage

  663. of the journey

  664. when we come

  665. to see them searching,

  666. we're going to read,

  667. but first,

  668. before we read,

  669. we're going to sing.

  670. We're going to sing

  671. another psalm together.

  672. We're going to sing

  673. in Psalm 22.

  674. Psalm 22.

  675. And we're going to sing

  676. from verse 25

  677. down to verse 27,

  678. three stanzas.

  679. Now,

  680. this is another psalm

  681. that's all about

  682. Jesus in many ways.

  683. It speaks to us

  684. about his crucifixion.

  685. But at the end

  686. of this psalm,

  687. it reminds us

  688. that although he died,

  689. he is alive.

  690. In verse 25,

  691. you are the theme

  692. of all my praise.

  693. Within the great

  694. assembly, Lord,

  695. before all those

  696. who fear your name,

  697. I will fulfill

  698. your solemn word.

  699. And then in verse 27,

  700. the whole earth

  701. will remember him

  702. and turn towards

  703. the Lord their God.

  704. All peoples

  705. will bow down

  706. to him,

  707. the nations

  708. of the world abroad.

  709. And that's a reminder

  710. to us that today

  711. as we worship here

  712. throughout the world,

  713. the whole world,

  714. people remember him,

  715. remember that he is risen.

  716. So we'll sing

  717. from verse 25

  718. to verse 27

  719. to God's praise.

  720. Amen.

  721. Amen.

  722. Amen.

  723. You are the theme

  724. of all my praise

  725. within the great assembly,

  726. Lord,

  727. before all those

  728. who fear your name,

  729. I will fulfill

  730. my solemn word.

  731. The poor will eat

  732. and will be filled,

  733. and those who seek

  734. the Lord will give.

  735. A shout of joyful praise

  736. to him,

  737. O may your heart

  738. forever lift.

  739. the whole earth

  740. will remember him

  741. and turn towards

  742. the Lord their God.

  743. the Lord their God.

  744. All peoples

  745. will bow down

  746. to him,

  747. the nations

  748. of the world abroad.

  749. the Lord.

  750. Well, we read some more

  751. verses now in this chapter,

  752. Luke 24.

  753. We're going to read

  754. from verse 25

  755. down to verse 31.

  756. Luke 24 at verse 25.

  757. And he said to them,

  758. O foolish ones,

  759. and slow of heart

  760. to believe

  761. all that the prophets

  762. have spoken.

  763. Was it not necessary

  764. that the Christ

  765. should suffer these things

  766. and enter into his glory?

  767. And beginning with Moses

  768. and all the prophets,

  769. he interpreted to them

  770. in all the scriptures

  771. the things

  772. concerning himself.

  773. So they drew near

  774. to the village

  775. to which they were going.

  776. He acted as if

  777. he were going further,

  778. but they urged him

  779. strongly, saying,

  780. Stay with us,

  781. for it is towards evening

  782. and the day

  783. is now far spent.

  784. So he went in

  785. to stay with them.

  786. When he was at the table

  787. with them,

  788. he took the bread

  789. and blessed

  790. and broke it

  791. and gave it to them.

  792. And their eyes

  793. were opened

  794. and they recognized him

  795. and he vanished

  796. from their sight.

  797. Well, as Jesus

  798. was hearing

  799. these two

  800. on the road to Emmaus

  801. talking as he came

  802. alongside them,

  803. this is now

  804. where we see

  805. how Jesus

  806. responds to them

  807. and all that they're saying

  808. and all the explanations

  809. that they've given

  810. to him

  811. about what had happened

  812. in Jerusalem.

  813. And it's a reminder

  814. to us

  815. that there is always

  816. two sides.

  817. to every story.

  818. Two sides.

  819. And so often

  820. it's a case

  821. of trying to work out

  822. what is true

  823. and what is a lie.

  824. And we begin to see

  825. that the understanding

  826. that the two

  827. on the road to Emmaus

  828. had was

  829. believing

  830. what was not true.

  831. And that's what

  832. Jesus' response

  833. to them is

  834. in verse 25.

  835. He said to them,

  836. O foolish ones,

  837. and slow of heart

  838. to believe

  839. all that the prophets

  840. have written.

  841. O foolish ones,

  842. are we fools today?

  843. Will we be fools

  844. tomorrow

  845. when someone plays

  846. and April fools on us

  847. and we get sucked in

  848. and believe that?

  849. We can be fools

  850. to believe a lie.

  851. It can happen

  852. so easily

  853. and so quickly.

  854. But how many more

  855. are fools

  856. in not believing

  857. what is written

  858. for us here?

  859. What is told

  860. to us

  861. in the Bible

  862. in God's Word?

  863. the truth

  864. that is presented

  865. to us

  866. in the Scriptures?

  867. Well, that's what

  868. Jesus brings

  869. these two to.

  870. He brings them

  871. to the Bible,

  872. to the Word

  873. of God.

  874. And that's what

  875. Jesus says,

  876. you are fools

  877. not to believe this.

  878. And Jesus then

  879. starts explaining

  880. to them

  881. all about

  882. the Bible.

  883. And he says,

  884. was it not necessary

  885. that Christ

  886. should suffer

  887. these things

  888. and enter

  889. into glory?

  890. Was that not

  891. what the Bible

  892. was saying to you

  893. all this time?

  894. And he says then

  895. in verse 27,

  896. beginning with Moses

  897. and all the prophets,

  898. he began to explain

  899. the Bible to them.

  900. The things,

  901. he says,

  902. concerning himself.

  903. How Jesus was seen

  904. in all of the Old Testament.

  905. How it was pointing

  906. towards Jesus' coming

  907. and all that was

  908. necessary for him

  909. to do.

  910. And you can imagine

  911. Jesus speaking

  912. about the things

  913. of the Old Testament,

  914. like the Passover lamb,

  915. explaining what it meant

  916. in Moses' day,

  917. what it meant now,

  918. what it meant

  919. going forward.

  920. Explaining from the prophets,

  921. like Isaiah,

  922. the things that Isaiah

  923. wrote about Jesus.

  924. Explaining from

  925. so many of the Psalms,

  926. how Jesus is seen

  927. in them.

  928. Even think of the likes

  929. of Psalm 14,

  930. which says,

  931. the fool says in his heart,

  932. there is no God.

  933. That is what it means

  934. to be a fool.

  935. To say there is no God.

  936. And Jesus here is describing

  937. these two on the road

  938. to Emmaus

  939. as foolish

  940. and slow

  941. of heart.

  942. He is describing them

  943. in this way

  944. and he is saying

  945. basically,

  946. you are stubborn.

  947. You are stubborn

  948. not to believe

  949. these things.

  950. Here it is

  951. presented before you.

  952. You are just foolish.

  953. You are stubborn

  954. not to believe

  955. these things.

  956. And is that not

  957. the way we so often

  958. are as well?

  959. We are just stubborn

  960. by nature.

  961. Stubborn

  962. to believe

  963. so many things.

  964. And that is certainly

  965. not something

  966. we want to be

  967. with the word

  968. of God.

  969. Stubbornness

  970. is being foolish.

  971. Many of you,

  972. I am sure,

  973. will be busy

  974. just now

  975. either working

  976. or helping

  977. with sheep

  978. and helping

  979. with lambing

  980. at this time.

  981. It is a busy time

  982. for those

  983. who have sheep.

  984. Have you ever

  985. ended up

  986. in a standoff

  987. with a sheep

  988. though?

  989. When you are

  990. trying to get

  991. them into the pen

  992. but they just

  993. want to go

  994. the opposite

  995. direction.

  996. And I am sure

  997. many of you

  998. have been in

  999. a situation

  1000. where you find

  1001. yourself,

  1002. you end up

  1003. just wanting

  1004. to talk

  1005. to the sheep

  1006. and you are

  1007. trying to reason

  1008. with the sheep.

  1009. You are saying

  1010. look,

  1011. I just want you

  1012. to go this way

  1013. not that way.

  1014. Will you not

  1015. just do

  1016. as I am saying

  1017. and you are

  1018. you want me

  1019. to go this way?

  1020. No,

  1021. I am going

  1022. that way.

  1023. They are stubborn

  1024. just like we are.

  1025. And that is why

  1026. you find

  1027. in the Bible

  1028. Jesus so often

  1029. describes

  1030. his people

  1031. as sheep.

  1032. You find it

  1033. in the Old Testament

  1034. as well.

  1035. All we like sheep

  1036. have gone astray.

  1037. We have turned

1038. all to our own ways.

  1039. We have been stubborn.

  1040. We have gone away.

  1041. Well,

  1042. Jesus is described

  1043. as we sang

  1044. in Psalm 23

  1045. as the good shepherd.

  1046. And the good shepherd

  1047. who is described

  1048. in John 10

  1049. as the one

  1050. who calls

  1051. his sheep,

  1052. calls them by name

  1053. that they would

  1054. follow him.

  1055. But we are stubborn.

  1056. Even though we know

  1057. the Bible

  1058. is talking

  1059. to us,

  1060. we are still

  1061. stubborn

  1062. to believe,

  1063. slow of heart

  1064. and just foolish

  1065. to believe

  1066. all that is said.

  1067. There are two sides

  1068. to every story.

  1069. But the more

  1070. we hear

  1071. the voice

  1072. of Jesus,

  1073. the more we realize

  1074. that he is

  1075. just like

  1076. a good shepherd.

  1077. A shepherd

  1078. who wants

  1079. to care

  1080. for his sheep.

  1081. A shepherd

  1082. who is trying

  1083. to get his sheep

  1084. into the pen

  1085. so he can look

  1086. after them

  1087. and care for them

  1088. even though they

  1089. want to go

  1090. the opposite

  1091. direction.

  1092. The more we hear

  1093. of Jesus,

  1094. the more we see

  1095. he wants us

  1096. to come to him

  1097. that we might

  1098. help us.

  1099. That we might

  1100. come to him

  1101. and find rest

  1102. with him.

  1103. And the more

  1104. they,

1105. the two on the road

  1106. to Emmaus,

  1107. were hearing

  1108. as Jesus was

  1109. opening up

  1110. the scriptures,

  1111. the more they realized

  1112. as he was searching

  1113. through the scriptures,

  1114. he was not just

  1115. searching the scriptures

  1116. but he was searching

  1117. their hearts.

  1118. Working in their hearts,

  1119. those hearts

  1120. that were stubborn

  1121. and foolish

  1122. and slow

  1123. to believe,

  1124. he was working

  1125. in them

  1126. that they might

  1127. come to believe.

  1128. And that is

  1129. the power

  1130. of God's word.

  1131. That is the power

  1132. that we have

  1133. before us

  1134. here today.

  1135. This word

  1136. of God

  1137. that speaks

  1138. to us

  1139. about all

  1140. that was

  1141. necessary

  1142. for Christ

  1143. to suffer.

  1144. All that he

  1145. had to do

  1146. for us

  1147. in giving

  1148. his life

  1149. on the cross

  1150. and being put

  1151. in the grave

  1152. but that he

  1153. rose again

  1154. to remind us

  1155. that he had

  1156. conquered the grave,

  1157. conquered death.

  1158. All of these

  1159. things

  1160. we are to hear

1161. and that is the word

  1162. that searches

  1163. your heart

  1164. in my heart

  1165. and challenges

  1166. us

  1167. to believe

  1168. in this.

  1169. We can come

  1170. from doubting

  1171. to being foolish

  1172. and stubborn

  1173. to being searched

  1174. by Jesus

  1175. and coming

  1176. to know

  1177. what Jesus

  1178. has done

  1179. for us

  1180. that we might

  1181. have life

  1182. in him.

  1183. And that is the

  1184. final thing

  1185. I want us

  1186. to take

  1187. from this

  1188. passage.

  1189. The way

  1190. they come

  1191. to believe.

  1192. I want us

  1193. just to read

  1194. a few more

  1195. verses

  1196. before we

  1197. come to reflect

  1198. on this

  1199. final point.

  1200. Reading from

  1201. verse 32

  1202. down to

  1203. verse 35.

  1204. And there

  1205. we read

  1206. these words.

  1207. They said

  1208. to each

  1209. other,

  1210. did not

  1211. our hearts

  1212. burn

  1213. within us

  1214. while he

  1215. talked to

  1216. us on

  1217. the road,

  1218. while he

  1219. opened to

  1220. us the

  1221. scriptures.

  1222. And they

  1223. rose that

  1224. same hour

  1225. and returned

  1226. to Jerusalem.

  1227. And they

  1228. found the

  1229. eleven and

  1230. those who

  1231. were with

  1232. them gathered

  1233. together saying,

  1234. The Lord

  1235. has risen

  1236. indeed,

  1237. and he

  1238. has appeared

  1239. to Simon.

  1240. Then they

  1241. told what

  1242. had happened

  1243. on the road

  1244. and how he

  1245. was known

  1246. to them

  1247. in the

  1248. breaking

  1249. of bread.

  1250. As they

  1251. had come

  1252. towards

  1253. Emmaus,

  1254. these two

  1255. had invited

  1256. Jesus in

  1257. to stay

  1258. with them.

  1259. They were

  1260. concerned for

  1261. him.

  1262. It was

  1263. getting late

  1264. at night.

  1265. It wasn't

  1266. the time

  1267. to be out

  1268. and about

  1269. on the

  1270. roads at

  1271. that time

  1272. of night

  1273. because

  1274. they were

  1275. dangerous

  1276. places,

  1277. places where

  1278. robbers would

  1279. be hiding

  1280. and waiting

  1281. for people

  1282. to come

  1283. along.

  1284. And as

  1285. they sat

  1286. together

  1287. and as

  1288. Jesus had

  1289. opened up

  1290. the scriptures

  1291. to them,

  1292. you see in

  1293. this moment

  1294. there was a

  1295. realization

  1296. of who

  1297. it was.

  1298. In the

  1299. breaking of

  1300. the bread

  1301. they suddenly

  1302. realized

  1303. that this

  1304. was Jesus.

  1305. What does

  1306. recognizing

  1307. Jesus do?

  1308. What does

  1309. recognizing

  1310. the truth

  1311. do?

  1312. It does

  1313. what happened

  1314. to these

  1315. two on

  1316. the road

  1317. to Emmaus.

  1318. It makes

  1319. your heart

  1320. burn

  1321. within you.

  1322. It's an

  1323. amazing image

  1324. this.

  1325. Did not

  1326. our hearts

  1327. burn

  1328. within us

  1329. as he

  1330. opened up

  1331. the scriptures?

  1332. And it's

  1333. looking back.

  1334. It's

  1335. recognizing

  1336. something that

  1337. had been

  1338. happening

  1339. for a while

  1340. and something

  1341. that can

  1342. happen to

  1343. ourselves

  1344. as well

  1345. when all

  1346. of a sudden

  1347. we begin

  1348. to realize

  1349. who Jesus

  1350. is and

  1351. begin to

  1352. realize how

  1353. he's been

  1354. speaking to

  1355. us and

  1356. how he's

  1357. been bringing

  1358. our heart

  1359. alive again.

  1360. Our heart

  1361. that was

  1362. hard and

  1363. stubborn and

  1364. foolish.

  1365. Jesus has

  1366. begun to

  1367. work in

  1368. it.

  1369. To bring

  1370. it to

  1371. life.

  1372. Through

  1373. his word.

  1374. through

  1375. his

  1376. truth.

  1377. That is

  1378. what

  1379. happened

  1380. to them.

  1381. The

  1382. word of

  1383. God

  1384. started to

  1385. speak

  1386. in

  1387. powerful

  1388. ways.

  1389. And the

  1390. hope,

  1391. remember the

  1392. hope that

  1393. they thought

  1394. had gone.

  1395. The hope

  1396. that they

  1397. had left

  1398. behind in

  1399. Jerusalem,

  1400. leaving,

  1401. as it were,

  1402. before the

  1403. full-time

  1404. whistle had

  1405. gone,

  1406. not realizing

  1407. the great

  1408. achievement that

  1409. had been

  1410. done for

  1411. them,

  1412. that he

  1413. was risen.

  1414. What they

  1415. had been

  1416. slow to

  1417. believe,

  1418. now they

  1419. realized.

  1420. And their

  1421. hope was

  1422. back.

  1423. Their hope

  1424. was fulfilled.

  1425. They were

  1426. filled with

  1427. joy.

  1428. Joy and

  1429. gladness that

  1430. the Lord is

  1431. risen indeed.

  1432. And that's

  1433. the joy that

  1434. the word of

  1435. God can give

  1436. to us today

  1437. as well.

  1438. So here

  1439. they were,

  1440. the two on

  1441. the road to

  1442. Emmaus.

  1443. They had

  1444. come to

  1445. Emmaus.

  1446. What had

  1447. started out

  1448. as a sad

  1449. journey,

  1450. talking about

  1451. the hope

  1452. that they

  1453. had lost

  1454. and all

  1455. of these

  1456. things.

  1457. Imagine

  1458. you were

  1459. going on

  1460. a school

  1461. sponsored

  1462. walk.

  1463. You were

  1464. going to

  1465. walk from

  1466. Stornoway,

  1467. seven miles,

  1468. maybe to

  1469. the Lough

  1470. School or

  1471. to the

  1472. Bath

  1473. School.

  1474. And it's

  1475. been a

  1476. long,

  1477. tiring

  1478. walk.

  1479. You're

  1480. knackered

  1481. as you

  1482. come to

  1483. the school.

  1484. You're

  1485. thirsty,

  1486. your feet

  1487. are hurting.

  1488. And then

  1489. when you

  1490. get there

  1491. your teacher

  1492. says,

  1493. right,

  1494. we're

  1495. going

  1496. straight

  1497. back

  1498. to

  1499. Stornoway.

  1500. Start

  1501. walking.

  1502. Oh,

  1503. you would

  1504. think,

  1505. no way,

  1506. we're not

  1507. going to

  1508. do that,

  1509. we've just

  1510. reached here.

  1511. Well,

  1512. Cleopas and

  1513. the friend

  1514. that was

  1515. with Cleopas,

  1516. as soon as

  1517. they had

  1518. arrived in

  1519. Emmaus and

  1520. as soon as

  1521. they realized

  1522. who Jesus

  1523. was,

  1524. the first

  1525. thing they

  1526. wanted to

  1527. do was

  1528. get right

  1529. back to

  1530. Jerusalem.

  1531. Get right

  1532. back there

  1533. to tell

  1534. people who

  1535. they had

  1536. seen and

  1537. who they

  1538. had met

  1539. with.

  1540. He is

  1541. risen.

  1542. He is

  1543. alive.

  1544. The

  1545. resurrection

  1546. filled

  1547. them with

  1548. hope.

  1549. And that's

  1550. what the

  1551. resurrection

  1552. does today

  1553. as well.

  1554. No matter

  1555. what makes

  1556. us sad

  1557. in this

  1558. life,

  1559. no matter

  1560. the things

  1561. that come

  1562. our way

  1563. that hurt

  1564. us and

  1565. leave us

  1566. feeling anxious

  1567. and fearful,

  1568. as we

  1569. trust in

  1570. Jesus,

  1571. he gives

  1572. us a

  1573. hope.

  1574. A hope

  1575. for today

  1576. and a

  1577. hope for

  1578. eternity.

  1579. Why is

  1580. the resurrection

  1581. important?

  1582. It's important

  1583. because it's

  1584. not a joke.

  1585. It's not

  1586. an April

  1587. fool's.

  1588. It's not

  1589. there to

  1590. give us a

  1591. little hope

  1592. and then only

  1593. take it

  1594. away that

  1595. is not

  1596. actually

  1597. true.

  1598. It is

  1599. true.

  1600. And so

  1601. we are

  1602. to believe

  1603. it.

  1604. These

  1605. two,

  1606. they came

  1607. to believe

  1608. in all

  1609. that they

  1610. had heard

  1611. and seen.

  1612. They had

  1613. seen Jesus

  1614. and it

  1615. filled them

  1616. with hope

  1617. and filled

  1618. them with

  1619. delight.

  1620. There was

  1621. once a

  1622. skeptic,

  1623. that's

  1624. someone who

  1625. doesn't really

  1626. believe in

  1627. God.

  1628. And he

  1629. had a

  1630. Christian

  1631. friend.

  1632. And very

  1633. often he

  1634. would mock

  1635. his Christian

  1636. friend,

  1637. make a

  1638. laugh of

  1639. his faith.

  1640. And one

  1641. day this

  1642. man said

  1643. to his

  1644. Christian

  1645. friend,

  1646. say,

  1647. George,

  1648. what would

  1649. you say

  1650. if when

  1651. you die

  1652. you find

  1653. out that

  1654. there is

  1655. no heaven?

  1656. Well,

  1657. a Christian

  1658. friend said

  1659. to his

  1660. friend beside

  1661. him with

  1662. a smile.

  1663. He said,

  1664. well,

  1665. I would

  1666. say I've

  1667. had a

  1668. good life

  1669. and I've

  1670. enjoyed living

  1671. my life

  1672. for Christ.

  1673. And then

  1674. he threw

  1675. a question

  1676. back at

  1677. his skeptic

  1678. friend,

  1679. his friend

  1680. who didn't

  1681. believe.

  1682. And he

  1683. said to

  1684. him,

  1685. what about

  1686. you,

  1687. Fred?

  1688. What would

  1689. you say

  1690. if when

  1691. you die

  1692. you find

  1693. out there

  1694. is such

  1695. a place

  1696. as hell?

  1697. And there

  1698. was no

  1699. response

  1700. to give.

  1701. And that's

  1702. the reality

  1703. of the

  1704. resurrection.

  1705. That's the

  1706. difference

  1707. it makes.

  1708. Jesus

  1709. came to

  1710. save his

  1711. people from

  1712. their sins,

  1713. to save

  1714. his people

  1715. from hell

  1716. and to

  1717. give them

  1718. the hope

  1719. of heaven

  1720. and eternity

  1721. with him.

  1722. it is not

  1723. an April

  1724. fools.

  1725. It's not

  1726. a joke.

  1727. But do you

  1728. believe the

  1729. truth or

  1730. do you

  1731. believe a

  1732. lie?

  1733. The truth

  1734. is he

  1735. died,

  1736. he was

  1737. buried,

  1738. and he

  1739. rose on

  1740. the third

  1741. day.

  1742. The lie

  1743. is that

  1744. none of

  1745. that is

  1746. true.

  1747. There's a

  1748. little song

  1749. that we

  1750. used to

  1751. sing at

  1752. a holiday

  1753. club that

  1754. we used

  1755. to do

  1756. in Dumfries.

  1757. And it's

  1758. about the

  1759. cross.

  1760. And it's

  1761. just a

  1762. simple little

  1763. song,

  1764. really one

  1765. verse.

  1766. And this

  1767. is what it

  1768. says.

  1769. When I

  1770. think about

  1771. the cross,

  1772. when I

  1773. think of

  1774. Jesus,

  1775. it reminds

  1776. me of

  1777. his love,

  1778. love that

  1779. never leaves

  1780. me.

  1781. who am

  1782. I that

  1783. he should

  1784. die in

  1785. my place,

  1786. giving life

  1787. so freely,

  1788. when I

  1789. think about

  1790. the cross,

  1791. help me

  1792. to believe

  1793. it.

  1794. It's a

  1795. simple

  1796. little verse,

  1797. and yet it

  1798. speaks so

  1799. much to

  1800. us about

  1801. the love

  1802. of the

  1803. Lord to

  1804. us,

  1805. in giving

  1806. his life,

  1807. love,

  1808. and asking

  1809. in prayer

  1810. that he

  1811. would help

  1812. us to

  1813. believe it.

  1814. Amazing

  1815. love,

  1816. how can

  1817. it be

  1818. that thou,

  1819. my God,

  1820. should die

  1821. for me?

  1822. He died,

  1823. but he

  1824. is risen,

  1825. and may he

  1826. help us

  1827. all to

  1828. believe the

  1829. truth that

  1830. there is

  1831. in that,

  1832. and not the

  1833. lie that

  1834. says it

  1835. is not

  1836. true.

  1837. Let us

  1838. pray.

  1839. Our

  1840. Father in

  1841. heaven,

  1842. we do

  1843. thank you

  1844. for your

  1845. word and

  1846. the hope

  1847. that it

  1848. gives,

  1849. for it

  1850. reminds us

  1851. that though

  1852. Christ came

  1853. to die

  1854. for our

  1855. sins,

  1856. it reminds

  1857. us too

  1858. that he

  1859. is risen,

  1860. and we

  1861. pray that

  1862. today we

  1863. would be

  1864. helped to

  1865. believe in

  1866. all of

  1867. these things,

  1868. to believe

  1869. in the

  1870. things that

  1871. maybe even

  1872. seem impossible

  1873. to us,

  1874. but we

  1875. thank you

  1876. that through

  1877. faith we

  1878. see all

  1879. that is

  1880. possible with

  1881. God.

  1882. So continue

  1883. with us

  1884. Lord and

  1885. bless us

  1886. we pray

  1887. in Jesus

  1888. name.

  1889. Amen.

  1890. We're going

  1891. to conclude

  1892. by singing

  1893. to God's

  1894. praise in

  1895. Psalm 62

  1896. in the

  1897. Scottish

  1898. Psalter

  1899. version.

  1900. Psalm 62

  1901. and we'll

  1902. sing the

  1903. first two

  1904. verses.

  1905. Psalm 62

  1906. My soul

  1907. with expectation

  1908. depends on

  1909. God indeed

  1910. my strength

  1911. and my

  1912. salvation

  1913. doth from

  1914. him alone

  1915. proceed.

  1916. He only

  1917. my salvation

  1918. is and my

  1919. strong rock

  1920. is he.

  1921. He only

  1922. is my

  1923. sure defense

  1924. much moved

  1925. I shall

  1926. not be.

  1927. We'll sing

  1928. these two

  1929. verses to

  1930. God's

  1931. praise.

  1932. my soul

  1933. with

  1934. expectation

  1935. depends

  1936. on

  1937. God

  1938. indeed

  1939. my strength

  1940. and my

  1941. salvation

  1942. doth

  1943. from

  1944. him

  1945. alone

  1946. proceed.

  1947. He only

  1948. is my

  1949. salvation

  1950. and my

  1951. strong

  1952. rock

  1953. is he.

  1954. He only

  1955. is

  1956. my

  1957. sure

  1958. defense

  1959. much

  1960. move

  1961. I

  1962. shall

  1963. not

  1964. leave.

  1965. After the

  1966. benediction

  1967. I'll go to

  1968. the door

  1969. to my

  1970. right here.

  1971. We'll just

  1972. close with
