  1. Our opening psalm tonight, psalm of praise, is psalm 30.

  2. Psalm number 30, that's in the Scottish Psalter.

  3. You'll find that on page 239.

  4. Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me on high,

  5. and over me thou to rejoice made'st not mine enemy.

  6. For thou who art the Lord my God, I in distress to thee,

  7. with loud cries lifted up my voice, and thou hast healed me.

  8. Down to verse 5, for but a moment lasts his wrath, life in his favor lies.

  9. Weeping may for a night endure, at morn doth joy arise.

  10. Words that are so full, vibrantly full of life,

  11. and full of thanksgiving to God for his salvation,

  12. and call upon us as God's people to sing praise to him in accordance with that.

  13. Psalm 30 then, verses 1 to 5.

  14. Lord, I will thee extol.

  15. Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me on high,

  16. and over me thou to rejoice, may it's not mine enemy.

  17. O thou who art the Lord my God, I in distress to thee,

  18. with thou hast lifted me, with thou Christ, may it's not mine.

  19. I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me, with thou Christ, may it's not mine.

  20. O Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me, with thou Christ, may it's not mine.

  21. And love, and still let me be.

  22. O Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me.

  23. O Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me, with thou hast lifted me.

  24. O Lord, I will thee extol, for thou hast ing it, with thou hast magnetic收 syste.

  25. O Lord, I will thee extol, ye socher!

  26. O O Lord, ye that high this holy one, sing praise unto the Lord.

  27. Son to the Lord, and give unto him thanks when ye his holiness reward.

  28. For God's hope and last is right, like in his favor lies.

  29. We've been before a night endured, a thorn of joy arise.

  30. Now we're going to engage in prayer, let's call upon the Lord in prayer.

  31. Amen.

  32. We pray that that may be the experience of each one of us here in this building tonight.

  33. That we can meaningfully and joyfully sing praises to you, knowing you as the rescuer who has brought us from death.

  34. Who has brought us life in its abundance, in the Lord Jesus Christ, your Son.

  35. Lord, we give thanks that we are here once again, gathered in this building to worship you.

  36. We are conscious of drawing near to you, even though we cannot see you.

  37. And we nevertheless know that you are here.

  38. And we know that we consciously come into your presence as we come to worship you, whether collectively, with others or privately for ourselves.

  39. And we give thanks for the privilege we have of being able to draw near to God.

  40. And help us, we pray, to do so with faith and with longing.

  41. Enable us to draw near to you, believing that you are indeed a rewarder of those who seek you diligently.

  42. And we ask tonight, Lord, that as we gather together, so your word once again will be impressed upon our minds and hearts.

  43. Feed our minds, we pray, so that we will grow in our understanding of your truth.

  44. And of the great things that are revealed in your truth.

  45. When you reveal to us yourself, your ways and ourselves and the world in which we live.

  46. When you bring before us things of eternity and of time.

  47. We give thanks that you set out for us, especially the way of life against the way of death.

  48. Help us, we pray, as we become familiar with these things week by week.

  49. That our concern will be, Lord, to grow in our understanding and our appreciation of them.

  50. We come before you, Lord, as those who also need to come with our confession of our sin.

  51. We pray, Lord, that you would enable us to do so meaningfully.

  52. To come before you, even though we have maybe expressed our sin to you penitently before many times.

  53. Yet, O Lord, it is appropriate for us, indeed, as you taught your disciples,

  54. to forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  55. To forgive our sins, to cleanse us from our iniquity.

  56. We come with that confession, O Lord.

  57. We have sinned against you even since we met here this morning.

  58. And our sins, we know, are sins of our mind as well as of our outward actions.

  59. And we ask your forgiveness.

  60. We ask your restoration whenever we have gone aside from your ways.

  61. We ask that you would give us tonight that sense of assurance

  62. that our sins are truly forgiven in Christ when we come to place our trust in him.

  63. And we pray, gracious one, that our thankfulness may truly extend to include the fact that our sins,

  64. when forgiven, will never return to us again accusingly.

  65. We pray that you would grant to us, each of us here, O Lord,

  66. that such may be our relationship with you.

  67. And that our concern will be not only to know that for ourselves,

  68. but to commend it as an experience we have come to know to those around us, too.

  69. Bless us, Lord, we pray tonight in our homes and our families,

  70. in the circumstances of life we find ourselves in.

  71. We pray that your blessing will be with us in all that we do and wherever we appear.

  72. And we ask as we were dwelling our minds this morning, O Lord,

  73. upon the importance of revealing by our way of life

  74. that you are our covenant God, that we are your people.

  75. And we pray that that will be a burden on our hearts,

  76. that we will be concerned, O Lord, to show that

  77. wherever we have the opportunity to do so in the world and conditions of our day.

  78. Remember us, Lord.

  79. Lord, we pray in all our activities as well as once again we bring before you

  80. all that we seek to partake of in this coming week.

  81. Lord, we are conscious every time we come each Lord's Day to open our bulletin sheet

  82. how much, O Lord, you enable us to engage in

  83. how many different types of activities we find ourselves involved with.

  84. And we pray that these will again be blessed,

  85. that we will be thankful that we are able to carry out these activities in your name

  86. and seeking the advance of your kingdom in them.

  87. And we pray, Lord, that you would grant always your blessing to accompany

  88. all that we seek to do in your name.

  89. For without you, where can we be?

  90. Without you, we cannot know that effective blessing of the gospel

  91. that our hearts desire.

  92. We pray again for your Holy Spirit

  93. to continue to guide us and to bless us as a people.

  94. Remember those of our number again tonight who are ill.

  95. We think tonight, Lord, of those in hospital,

  96. those who are recovering from illness,

  97. those recovering from surgery, from treatment,

  98. those who are still engaged in such treatment,

  99. we ask that you would bless them,

  100. bless those who watch over them and care for them

  101. in their own homes and families and may be anxious over them.

  102. Lord, we pray that you would still all our anxieties,

  103. whatever they may be and whatever they may be related to.

  104. We pray that you would help us to follow the direction of your word,

  105. to be not over-anxious about anything,

  106. but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving,

  107. to make our requests known to God,

  108. that we may know the peace of God

  109. that passes all understanding,

  110. that is able to garrison our hearts and minds

  111. through Christ Jesus.

  112. We ask, O Lord, too, that you would bless our young folks.

  113. We bring our young people before you.

  114. Bless them, Lord, in their youngest days

  115. through to their adolescence and up into adulthood.

  116. We pray that your blessing will follow all that's done

  117. in your name toward them,

  118. to teach them the things of God,

  119. to hold out for them the word of life.

  120. We pray your blessing, too, tonight

  121. for those who continue to mourn over the passing of loved ones,

  122. either recently or in times gone by.

  123. We know, Lord, how fresh these things can be in our memory,

  124. even though the event may be long in the past.

  125. We seek your peace.

  126. We seek your stilling of our hearts, O Lord.

  127. We ask that your comfort will be extended

  128. to those who know the pain of bereavement

  129. and of the sorrow of part and from loved ones.

  130. Grant your blessing to them all, we pray.

  131. Throughout the world, Lord, tonight,

  132. we pray that your kingdom will extend

  133. and that your people will be blessed.

  134. We bring before you the conditions we know

  135. of the world's activities.

  136. As we find them, Lord, brought before us in news reports,

  137. we pray especially for those places

  138. where tonight there is war, terror, strife,

  139. anger and conflict and hatred.

  140. And we ask, gracious one,

  141. that through the gospel you would bring about

  142. a lasting peace in all of these situations.

  143. We remember, particularly at this time,

  144. the situation, Lord, affecting Israel and the Middle East.

  145. We pray that in those situations, Lord,

  146. peace may prevail.

  147. And we ask that you would help people

  148. to lay down their arms in the aggression

  149. that we know of, Lord,

  150. as that has taken place now over many months.

  151. We pray that you bless the situation too in Ukraine.

  152. Oh, help them, Lord, we pray,

  153. as they seek to advance

  154. and come to gain victory over an aggressor

  155. that has sought to displace them

  156. and sought and brought much devastation

  157. into their nation.

  158. Oh, Lord, our God, bring peace about, we pray,

  159. and grant, we pray,

  160. wherever such aggression happens

  161. from time to time in the world,

  162. Lord, we pray that you would grant

  163. by your own blessing that it may be stilled

  164. and that you would bring about conditions of peace

  165. throughout the world.

  166. We pray that your blessing now will be with us here.

  167. Bless us in this, our own community as well.

  168. Bless, Lord, all that is available to us

  169. to our advantage

  170. in the way that we find so much to help us,

  171. whether it be through ill health,

  172. through mental health provisions,

  173. physical ill health,

  174. all, Lord, else who help us from time to time

  175. with counseling,

  176. with various ways in which we find our lives benefited.

  177. Bless them.

  178. We pray who have the skills to impart to us

  179. such treatment and such help at these times.

  180. We pray your blessing to be with Muriel tonight

  181. as she speaks about her work.

  182. Lord, we ask that as she spends time with us

  183. during these days,

  184. that you will bless her,

  185. that you continue to bless the loved ones

  186. she's left behind for a time in Cambodia.

  187. We ask that they too will be kept

  188. during the time that she's absent.

  189. And we pray that you would continue

  190. to bless her work there

  191. and enable us to continue prayerfully

  192. and practically to support her

  193. through her time of service there.

  194. Continue to bless all efforts throughout the world,

  195. whether it be through charitable agencies

  196. or through the work of missionary activity.

  197. Oh, Lord, extend your kingdom, we pray,

  198. through all of these means.

  199. Hear us now, we pray.

  200. Accept us freely and all for Jesus' sake.

  201. Amen.

  202. We're going to again sing to God's praise.

  203. This time we're singing in Psalm 34.

  204. Psalm 34, and it's in the St. Sam's version.

  205. And the verses we find from verse 15.

  206. From verse 15 to the end of the Psalm,

  207. verse 22, that's page 41.

  208. The Lord's eyes are upon the just.

  209. He listens to their plea.

  210. The wicked he rejects

  211. and blots from earth their memory.

  212. The righteous cry.

  213. The Lord responds and frees them when distressed.

  214. The Lord draws near the broken heart

  215. and rescues the depressed.

  216. These verses 15 to 22.

  217. The Lord's eyes are upon the just.

  218. The Lord's eyes are upon the just.

  219. He listens to their plea.

  220. The wicked he rejects and blots from earth their memory.

  221. The righteous cry.

  222. The righteous cry.

  223. The Lord responds and frees them when distressed.

  224. The Lord draws near the broken heart.

  225. The broken heart and rescues the depressed.

  226. From all the troubles of the just.

  227. The Lord will set him free.

  228. The Lord protects his death.

  229. The broken heart and broken heart will be.

  230. The wicked are condemned to death.

  231. All those who hate the just.

  232. God saves his death.

  233. The broken heart and broken heart will be.

  234. The broken heart and broken heart will be.

  235. For in the Lord they trust.

  236. Amen.

  237. Let's turn now to read and to hear God's word.

  238. We're reading tonight from the epistle to the Hebrews.

  239. The letter to the Hebrews.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  240. Chapter 11.

  241. And we're reading from the beginning down as far as verse 16.

  242. As you know this is a great chapter dealing with faith.

  243. But faith as it becomes visible in the life of God's people.

  244. So that each of those instances and examples of faith.

  245. Faith involves something that they did or achieved through faith.

  246. And we'll take your reading down to verse 16.

  247. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for.

  248. The conviction of things not seen.

  249. For by it the people of old received their commendation.

  250. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God.

  251. So that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

  252. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  253. Through which he was commended as righteous.

  254. God commending him by accepting his gifts.

  255. And through his faith although he died he still speaks.

  256. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death.

  257. And he was not found because God had taken him.

  258. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

  259. For without faith it is impossible to please him.

  260. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists.

  261. And that he rewards those who seek him.

  262. By faith Noah being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen.

  263. In reverent faith constructed an ark for the saving of his household.

  264. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

  265. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.

  266. And he went out not knowing where he was going.

  267. By faith he went to live in the land of promise as in a foreign land.

  268. Living in tents with Isaac and Jacob.

  269. Heirs with him of the same promise.

  270. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations.

  271. Whose designer and builder is God.

  272. By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive.

  273. Even when she was past the age.

  274. Since she considered him faithful who had promised.

  275. Therefore from one man and him as good as dead.

  276. Were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven.

  277. And as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

  278. These all died in faith.

  279. Not having received the things promised.

  280. But having seen them and greeted them from afar.

  281. And having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

  282. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

  283. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out.

  284. They would have had opportunity to return.

  285. But as it is.

  286. They desire a better country.

  287. That is a heavenly one.

  288. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God.

  289. For he has prepared for them a city.

  290. And may God again follow with this blessing.

  291. A reading of that portion of his own word.

  292. Now before we turn to a couple of verses in this chapter.

  293. We'll sing again.

  294. This time we're singing Psalm 73.

  295. And that's on page 316.

  296. Psalm 73 and verses 23 to 28.

  297. And these verses comprise one of the most wonderful testimonies and convictions.

  298. Anywhere we find in the Bible.

  299. The psalmist here having begun to.

  300. At the beginning to confess how very near he was to slipping away.

  301. How he had become envious.

  302. At what he thought was the life of the wicked.

  303. That didn't as far as he was concerned.

  304. Then have much by way of difficulty.

  305. In contrast to himself as a believer.

  306. But then when he went into the temple of God.

  307. To the house of God.

  308. He actually then he says understood their end.

  309. And surely he said in verse 18.

  310. They are actually in very slippery places.

  311. And suddenly brought to ruin.

  312. And so he continues now in verse 23.

  313. Nevertheless continually.

  314. O Lord I am with thee.

  315. Thou dost me hold by my right hand.

  316. And still upholdest me.

  317. Thou with thy counsel while I live.

  318. Wilt me conduct and guide.

  319. And to thy glory afterwards.

  320. Receive me to abide.

  321. So from verse 23 to the end of the psalm.

  322. Nevertheless continually.

  323. O Lord I am with thee.

  324. that thou dost iç for me.

  325. And what I love is to be.

  326. Thank you.

  327. That thou dost be whole.

  328. I am still a bolder's feet.

  329. With my power, still while I live, will be called that and guide.

  330. Until thy glory afterward receive me to abide.

  331. In heaven, I am the heaven's high, but thee, O Lord, alone.

  332. And in the air whom I desire, besides thee there is none.

  333. My flesh and heart, the pit and fail, but God, the fail me never.

  334. For all my heart, God is the strength and ocean forever.

  335. For all my heart, I fall from thee forever perish shall.

  336. Then that powering from me go, thou hast destroyed all.

  337. But surely it is good for me that I draw near to God.

  338. In God I trust that all thy works I may declare abroad.

  339. Well, for our time this evening, we're going to look at a couple of verses in Hebrews chapter 11, especially verses 5 and 6.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  340. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death.

  341. And he was not found because God had taken him.

  342. Now before he was taken, he was commended as having pleased God.

  343. And without faith it is impossible to please him.

  344. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

  345. And the corresponding words we find in the Old Testament in Genesis chapter 5 are as follows in verse 21.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  346. When Enoch had lived for 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.

  347. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah for 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

  348. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

  349. Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him.

  350. So the words of Hebrews are based very much on that reference in Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  351. Now we know that there can be many differences, indeed contrasts, between one believing life and another.

  352. And within the experiences of the people of God, there are some very contrasting experiences and situations.

  353. So that, in matter of fact, there are times when we may be not able to follow to any great extent that which others are going through.

  354. Or the experience they've had as people who have followed the Lord and believe in him.

  355. And when you look at these two people here, Abel in verse 4, followed by Enoch, they're obviously held in contrast.

  356. They both lived by faith.

  357. But in the one case, Abel, through faith, offered this more acceptable sacrifice.

  358. But he ended his life in this world by being put to death.

  359. He became a martyr.

  360. And yet, in contrast, you find, and I think it's for that reason that these verses are held one after another,

  361. Enoch, who lived by faith just as Abel did, but his days ended in this world by being taken away without seeing death.

  362. There's the one person living by faith and he's put to death for his faith, if you like.

  363. And there's the other one living by faith and he doesn't see death because God takes him away without ever having to pass through death.

  364. And so it is in our lives as believers.

  365. There are so many contrasts that we may not be able to follow as we think of the experiences of other people.

  366. And that should not disturb us because when we come to know of the ways of God,

  367. he deals differently with every individual as he sees fit and he knows exactly what we need at any given time,

  368. even if that may be very different to the way that he deals with others.

  369. So the fact that we differ, sometimes maybe markedly in our experience,

  370. from what other believers experience,

  371. we should never conclude from that, that we therefore must not have faith

  372. or that our faith cannot be genuine.

  373. When you go through this chapter, there's such a great variety of experiences,

  374. but all the way through there is one common feature,

  375. one thing that they all have in common, and that's faith in God.

  376. And in the case of Abel and of Enoch,

  377. they both had the same testimony that they pleased God,

  378. that they lived by faith in God through living,

  379. living through faith in God,

  380. they actually had this testimony that they pleased God.

  381. So we're looking first of all tonight at the facts concerning Enoch that are actually revealed here,

  382. the facts about Enoch that we find in verse 5.

  383. And then secondly, we look at the faith that Enoch lived by,

  384. because there are a number of aspects of his faith actually revealed to us in these verses.

  385. So the facts that are given, there are two facts especially in regard to Enoch as a person,

  386. and the first fact is that he was taken up so that he would not see death,

  387. and the second fact is that he pleased God.

  388. Before he was taken, he was commended as having pleased God.

  389. These two great facts,

  390. the fact that he was taken up by God without seeing death,

  391. and the fact that he pleased God prior to that,

  392. living through faith or by faith.

  393. And when you see here that he was taken up so that he should not see death,

  394. that's literally what we understand.

  395. This is not something that's given us by way of just an imaginary type of person or situation.

  396. From the Old Testament passage, Genesis 5,

  397. and from this he was taken away by God.

  398. He was not found.

  399. He was taken up, and he was not found,

  400. because God had taken him.

  401. Now when it says he was not found,

  402. that I think implies that there was a search made for him.

  403. There was a day when his relatives,

  404. people who knew him, his friends,

  405. expected to see him,

  406. and there was no sign of him.

  407. And there was no sign of him,

  408. because God had chosen to take him away.

  409. And just as the language is very abrupt,

  410. so that whole incident,

  411. in the case of Enoch,

  412. would have been a very abrupt taking.

  413. God took him,

  414. and he was not found.

  415. It's not that he died overnight,

  416. and was found by his relatives to have died,

  417. and passed away quickly,

  418. as happens to some.

  419. Here is somebody who wasn't found.

  420. Somebody who could not be located.

  421. Somebody who was well known,

  422. but he was not found,

  423. because God took him.

  424. And we believe these words literally,

  425. for what they say.

  426. This is God telling us through his word,

  427. this is exactly how it was.

  428. This is what happened.

  429. He did not die.

  430. He was taken away bodily.

  431. And that's not just a matter of fact sort of thing

  432. that's mentioned.

  433. It really indicates that there's such a thing

  434. as victory over death.

  435. Death did not claim Enoch.

  436. Death did not take him away.

  437. He was taken away so that he was above death.

  438. He was taken away,

  439. but he didn't see death.

  440. Not by death,

  441. but without seeing death,

  442. victory over it.

  443. A sudden change.

  444. And you notice,

  445. if you go through this passage in Genesis chapter 5,

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  446. this great list that you find there

  447. of the generations of Adam,

  448. a series recording the people who came from Adam

  449. all the way down

  450. until you reach the end of the chapter,

  451. which speaks about Noah.

  452. And then you're into chapter 6,

  453. giving more details about Noah.

  454. But all the way through,

  455. you find all of these people marked by these words,

  456. and he died,

  457. and he died,

  458. and he died.

  459. You follow it right through,

  460. and he died,

  461. all the way through

  462. until you come to verse 21.

  463. And then you come to verse 24.

  464. Enoch walked with God,

  465. and he died.

  466. No, he was taken.

  467. He was not found,

  468. for he was taken.

  469. And there you see a wonderful demonstration,

  470. really,

  471. in words,

  472. of how different it was

  473. in the case of Enoch,

  474. that he walked with God

  475. all the days of his life,

  476. and then he was not,

  477. for God took him.

  478. He demonstrated,

  479. God demonstrated through him,

  480. that death did not have the last word

  481. in human experience.

  482. That there was such a thing

  483. in the hand of God

  484. as victory over death.

  485. And in fact,

  486. you could say that that,

  487. for the Old Testament church,

  488. for the people of faith

  489. in the Old Testament,

  490. the likes of what happened to Enoch,

  491. and their knowledge as that

  492. was passed on to them,

  493. and came eventually to be written

  494. in the book of Genesis,

  495. that held out for him

  496. the prospect of victory over death.

  497. The assurance that death

  498. was not the great victor after all,

  499. but that God was.

  500. That God had something

  501. by which death would be overcome,

  502. and was overcome.

  503. Interesting,

  504. in the psalm,

  505. we sang Psalm 73,

  506. where the psalmist,

  507. in such a wonderful way

  508. of expressing it,

  509. said,

  510. You shall guide me

  511. with your counsel.

  512. I am continually with you.

  513. You will guide me

  514. with your counsel,

  515. and afterwards,

  516. you will receive me

  517. into glory.

  518. Now, literally,

  519. the word receive

  520. is actually the word take.

  521. Afterwards,

  522. you will take me

  523. into glory.

  524. That's exactly the same word

  525. that's used in Genesis 5

  526. to do with Enoch.

  527. Enoch was taken.

  528. The psalmist in Psalm 73

  529. is saying,

  530. Afterwards,

  531. you will take me

  532. into glory.

  533. You will take me

  534. above death.

  535. You will take me

  536. so that death

  537. will not actually

  538. have victory over me.

  539. What a wonderful testimony,

  540. all the way through

  541. the Old Testament days,

  542. that he could go

  543. to such words as these,

  544. and such events as,

  545. in the case of Enoch,

  546. and to the testimony

  547. of the psalmist,

  548. and be able to say,

  549. by faith in God,

  550. Lord, thank you

  551. that death is not final,

  552. that death is not

  553. the final victor,

  554. but that life is,

  555. the life that you give.

  556. You will receive me

  557. into glory.

  558. And in fact,

  559. you could say,

  560. that it's an indicator

  561. of resurrection

  562. from the dead.

  563. In the case of Enoch,

  564. and in the words

  565. of the psalmist,

  566. now I'm not saying

  567. by that,

  568. that they understood

  569. resurrection the way

  570. in the New Testament

  571. it came to be revealed,

  572. and especially following

  573. the resurrection of Christ.

  574. It was really

  575. a dim reflection

  576. of life

  577. by resurrection

  578. compared to

  579. what came to be revealed

  580. in the New Testament.

  581. But essentially,

  582. it is exactly the same.

  583. essentially,

  584. it is holding out

  585. before us

  586. victory over death.

  587. And where is victory

  588. over death

  589. rooted?

  590. Where is your own

  591. victory over death?

  592. Why is it that you

  593. as a believer

  594. tonight

  595. are conscious of

  596. and confident

  597. that death

  598. will not be

  599. the final victor

  600. in your life?

  601. Because you're united

  602. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  603. And who is he?

  604. He's the one who died

  605. and rose again

  606. from the dead.

  607. And united to him

  608. and united to him

  609. in his resurrection.

  610. You can say

  611. like the psalmist,

  612. you can say

  613. as was true of Enoch,

  614. nevertheless,

  615. I am continually

  616. with you.

  617. You hold me

  618. by the right hand.

  619. You guide me

  620. with your counsel

  621. and afterwards

  622. you will take me.

  623. You will take me

  624. up from the grave.

  625. You will take me

  626. to be with yourself.

  627. He was taken,

  628. Hebrews 11 says,

  629. taken up

  630. that should not

  631. see death.

  632. In other words,

  633. the word taken up

  634. there,

  635. the words taken up

  636. you could say

  637. are maybe better

  638. translated,

  639. well,

  640. maybe better,

  641. the rendering

  642. might be better

  643. using the word

  644. translated.

  645. When you translate

  646. someone from

  647. one situation

  648. to another,

  649. you're moving them

  650. on from one state

  651. to another,

  652. from one situation

  653. to another.

  654. And what's really

  655. said here about

  656. Enoch is

  657. God translated him.

  658. He took him

  659. out of one

  660. set of circumstances.

  661. He took him

  662. out of one

  663. situation

  664. to a better one.

  665. He took him

  666. out from a situation

  667. where normally

  668. you would see death

  669. and he took him

  670. above death

  671. and he took him

  672. beyond death

  673. and he took him

  674. in a way that

  675. could reflect on

  676. how God

  677. had overcome

  678. death in his

  679. experience.

  680. Now tonight

  681. that's important

  682. to yourself

  683. because the

  684. same faith

  685. that Enoch

  686. had

  687. is the faith

  688. that every

  689. true believer

  690. has had

  691. all the way

  692. down through

  693. history.

  694. And you

  695. tonight as a

  696. believer in

  697. Christ,

  698. even if your

  699. faith you might

  700. complain,

  701. well,

  702. it's very weak,

  703. it's a faith

  704. that you don't

  705. see in any

  706. way as robust

  707. compared to

  708. others.

  709. It's something

  710. that you're

  711. conscious of,

  712. maybe fluctuates

  713. from one day

  714. to the next

  715. in a way that

  716. you maybe don't

  717. have such great

  718. assurance and

  719. yet you would

  720. never say you're

  721. not actually a

  722. believer in

  723. Christ.

  724. Well,

  725. it doesn't

  726. matter whether

  727. it's small

  728. faith or

  729. large faith or

  730. strong faith or

  731. robust faith.

  732. Here is what

  733. it's attached

  734. to.

  735. It's connected

  736. to this person

  737. of Jesus.

  738. And because

  739. it is connected

  740. to him,

  741. you're assured

  742. that death

  743. will not claim

  744. you, even if

  745. your body and

  746. soul are

  747. separated in

  748. physical death.

  749. That's not

  750. death's victory

  751. when you're

  752. united to

  753. Christ.

  754. Because in

  755. Christ you

  756. have victory

  757. over death.

  758. And the day

  759. will come when

  760. your body will

  761. be raised from

  762. the grave and

  763. reunited with

  764. your soul.

  765. And bodily

  766. and spiritually

  767. as a complete

  768. person, you

  769. will share in

  770. the victory of

  771. God's people as

  772. they're united to

  773. the victory of

  774. Christ.

  775. What a wonderful

  776. concept.

  777. God's people as

  778. a great

  779. man.

  780. And how

  781. marvelous that even

  782. in the Old Testament

  783. days, even though not as fully revealed by any means, and it couldn't be really in a sense,

  784. till Jesus himself rose from the dead.

  785. But it's there.

  786. It's there so that you can see it in root form or embryonic form, if you like, in the revelation of God then.

  787. And then comes to a more full light in the New Testament age.

  788. So that's first of all, he was taken up by God. He was translated from one state to a better state.

  789. The second fact is that he pleased God. Before he was taken, he was commended as having pleased God.

  790. Again, it's maybe better to just have a different form of words there.

  791. He was commended as having pleased God, is what we read here. But you could translate it, he had it testified of him that he pleased God.

  792. And why does that make a little difference? Just a nuance, really, of meaning? Well, it makes a difference when you think of it this way.

  793. He had it testified of him that he pleased God. It wasn't something just private to himself.

  794. It wasn't something that was true of him as an individual that nobody actually saw but himself, that nobody was aware of but himself.

  795. When you say he had it testified of him, it means this was how he was known publicly.

  796. This was how people knew him.

  797. This was the kind of lifestyle that he showed as he went about his business in the world.

  798. He was known as a God pleaser.

  799. He was known as somebody who lived specifically to please God.

  800. He gave off this testimony.

  801. He had it testified about him by others that he was a pleaser of God.

  802. In other words, that his life was one that sought to gain the approval of God.

  803. And that's how it is with faith, isn't it?

  804. Your concern as a believer tonight is that you will have God's approval.

  805. Because unless we have God's approval, what does it matter?

  806. It doesn't matter what that world out there thinks about you if you don't have the approval of God.

  807. It doesn't really matter what approval the world might give you or anybody might give you.

  808. It all comes to nothing at the end of the day unless our life is right with God and God approves of us through faith in Christ.

  809. What does it matter?

  810. And the opposite is also true.

  811. If our faith is in Christ, if we have our trust in God, if our trust is located there,

  812. if our life is handed over to him and we live by faith in him, what does it matter what the world thinks of that?

  813. What does it matter if our testimony to the world is that we live to please God?

  814. The world may not accept that.

  815. The world may laugh at that.

  816. The world may find that just ridiculous.

  817. The world may think, well, surely you're not living by such outmoded ideas of what a life and a lifestyle should be.

  818. But you know, faith does not change down through the generations.

  819. Faith is essentially trusting in God.

  820. And trusting in God carries with it God's approval of that life.

  821. Not for anything we've done, but by virtue of what Jesus has done.

  822. And our union with him brings us into the approval of God.

  823. He had this testimony.

  824. He had this said of him, testified of him, that he approved, that he pleased God.

  825. And there's something else about it as well.

  826. When you go to the Genesis passage, as we read it there,

  827. Enoch walked with God, and he was not or was not found because God took him.

  828. He walked with God.

  829. It was an aspect of his life of faith.

  830. He lived a life of communion with God.

  831. Every day for Enoch was a life where he walked with God,

  832. where his path through life had God with him, and he was with God.

  833. He was his companion.

  834. He was his friend.

  835. He was the one he shared things with.

  836. He was the one he trusted in.

  837. You know, in the court of session in Edinburgh,

  838. there's a large hallway there.

  839. And in that hallway, QCs or KCs, as they are now,

  840. actually sometimes meet with their clients,

  841. maybe in between sessions of a case being heard in the court of session.

  842. And that large hall, it's a large hall,

  843. and what happens is when a KC wants to have some words with the client,

  844. he takes them into the hall,

  845. he stands at one end of it, and off he goes.

  846. Or she goes.

  847. And they walk together from one end of the hall,

  848. discussing things, or maybe the KC asking for certain things,

  849. certain details.

  850. And back they come again,

  851. and they do that until the KC has more information,

  852. or whatever it is he's seeking.

  853. The point is this.

  854. They're walking together in conversation.

  855. They're walking together in the business that they have together.

  856. And not until that business is finished

  857. Do they then depart?

  858. The KC, the court case resumes.

  859. The KC goes back to his place,

  860. and so does the client.

  861. That's really what happens ordinarily,

  862. but in terms of a spiritual situation,

  863. that is what a Christian life is about.

  864. Enoch walked with God.

  865. God was his chief advisor.

  866. God was the one who looked after his life.

  867. God was the one he conversed with.

  868. God was the one he gave his life over to.

  869. He walked with God.

  870. And he was not found because God took him.

  871. And in that very close friendship,

  872. so many things were shared together.

  873. Now, we don't have any record of,

  874. but inevitably that would be the case.

  875. When you go, for example, to Psalm 25,

  876. I like the way it's translated here in the ESV,

  877. Psalm 25,

  878. where you find at verse 14,

  879. these words,

  880. The friendship of the Lord

  881. is with those who fear him,

  882. and he makes known to them his covenant.

  883. The friendship of the Lord

  884. is with those who fear him.

  885. Those who fear the Lord,

  886. those who trust in the Lord,

  887. those whose lives are in the hands of the Lord,

  888. those who have given over their life to him,

  889. however you think about it as faith,

  890. those who live by faith,

  891. the Lord reveals to them his covenant.

  892. They converse with each other.

  893. God reveals things to them

  894. from his word,

  895. through his spirit,

  896. things that belong to them as his people,

  897. things that are true of their relationship with him.

  898. He reveals to them his covenant.

  899. Is that so of your own life tonight?

  900. Is it as true of you

  901. that you're walking with God?

  902. I'm not asking you

  903. to what extent you're assured of this,

  904. not asking how much can you explain of this.

  905. Is it true that you're walking with God?

  906. That your life in this world

  907. as a life of faith

  908. is as it was for Enoch,

  909. a life in which you walk with God?

  910. Is that what characterizes your life?

  911. Is that your testimony?

  912. Is that how it is with yourselves,

  913. with us as individuals?

  914. Am I tonight

  915. walking with God?

  916. Am I in conversation with God regularly?

  917. Am I praying to him as I should?

  918. Am I worshipping him?

  919. Am I putting him out foremost in my life

  920. as my great advisor,

  921. my KC, if you like,

  922. in representing me

  923. in his own presence?

  924. Enoch walked with God.

  925. He had this testimony

  926. before he was taken

  927. as having pleased God.

  928. The facts about Enoch then,

  929. very briefly,

  930. the faith that Enoch lived by.

  931. He was taken,

  932. in verse 6 here,

  933. without faith it is impossible

  934. to please God,

  935. and so on.

  936. It wasn't because of his faith

  937. that Enoch was taken by God

  938. so as not to see death.

  939. It was by faith that he lived.

  940. It wasn't his faith itself

  941. that provided the grounds

  942. of his acceptance with God.

  943. But it was through faith

  944. that he came to be accepted

  945. by God

  946. and into friendship with God.

  947. And what a marvelous thought

  948. and concept that is,

  949. isn't it?

  950. That through faith in God,

  951. through the exercise of faith,

  952. through trusting in God,

  953. we actually come into

  954. real, spiritual,

  955. lasting friendship with God.

  956. The Bible tells us that

  957. as sinners we are enemies,

  958. that we are at enmity with God.

  959. But through Christ,

  960. through what God has done

  961. in Christ,

  962. when we come to trust in him,

  963. then we come into the possession

  964. of something quite remarkable,

  965. something amazing,

  966. the friendship of God.

  967. We come to actually walk with him.

  968. We come to know him

  969. as our great friend.

  970. And that's why he says here

  971. that without faith,

  972. it is impossible to please God.

  973. It's not possible to please God

  974. without this faith.

  975. We can try it,

  976. but it just will not work.

  977. And I think in the passage itself here,

  978. we find some evidence of that.

  979. Cain, for example,

  980. tried,

  981. it's not mentioned in the passage,

  982. but Abel's brother,

  983. you remember Cain,

  984. who murdered him,

  985. and he brought an offering to God.

  986. Cain brought of the flock,

  987. the animals of the flock,

  988. a sacrifice.

  989. Cain brought the fruit of the ground.

  990. And some people think

  991. that he was refused acceptance

  992. because he didn't bring an animal.

  993. But I don't think that's

  994. what the passage actually is meaning at all.

  995. Cain took off something

  996. that belonged to his own way of life

  997. in the world.

  998. His employment was in tilling the ground

  999. and looking after the crops and so on.

1000. And he brought something of that

1001. to offer it to God.

1002. Whereas Abel brought of the flocks

  1003. that he looked after.

1004. The problem's not what they gave,

1005. but the spirit in which it was offered.

  1006. Cain couldn't care less

1007. what God thought of him.

1008. He just went through the motions,

  1009. almost as it were,

1010. just throwing a few vegetables together

  1011. to bring to God.

  1012. Whereas Abel, by faith,

1013. came to offer to God

  1014. a more acceptable sacrifice

1015. than Cain, it says in verse 4.

1016. It wasn't what he brought

1017. as a sacrifice that condemned Cain,

1018. but the manner in which he brought it.

  1019. It wasn't by faith.

1020. It wasn't in a love for God

1021. as his life afterwards showed.

  1022. Whereas Abel did.

1023. And so you find as well

  1024. with the Egyptians.

1025. If you go through the chapter,

  1026. you'll find that eventually

1027. you come to the people of Israel,

  1028. verse 29.

1029. The people crossed the Red Sea

1030. as if on dry land,

  1031. but the Egyptians,

1032. when they attempted to do the same,

  1033. were drowned.

1034. That, I think, is telling us

  1035. that there's something

  1036. in the Egyptians

1037. that sought to follow the ways

1038. of the people of Israel

  1039. who lived,

  1040. who by faith,

1041. entered into the Red Sea

1042. and went through to the other side,

  1043. whereas the Egyptians,

1044. attempting to do the same,

  1045. came to disaster.

1046. You know, we can try

  1047. and copy faith.

1048. We can try and imitate faith.

1049. We can try and pass ourselves off

  1050. as believers,

1051. but it's not really from the heart.

  1052. We can try outwardly

1053. to live a life of faith

1054. that tries to copy the lifestyle

  1055. of somebody we know

  1056. as a genuine believer.

  1057. Friends, tonight,

  1058. trying to imitate faith,

  1059. trying to copy faith,

  1060. without genuine faith,

  1061. is a disaster.

  1062. It will not work.

  1063. It leads to death.

1064. It's not approved of by God.

  1065. But by faith,

  1066. we are guaranteed

1067. God's acceptance of us in Christ.

  1068. By faith,

1069. this was how Enoch lived.

  1070. And so,

  1071. whoever comes to God,

  1072. it's saying,

1073. whoever would draw near to God,

1074. must believe that he exists,

  1075. or that he is,

1076. as the old AV has it.

1077. By whoever draws near to God,

1078. must believe that he is.

1079. And that means more than just

1080. believing in a bare existence of God.

1081. You come to draw near to God,

1082. and that's really the language

  1083. of worship,

  1084. primarily.

1085. You draw near to God.

  1086. That's what we're doing tonight

  1087. in worship together.

1088. We're drawing near to God.

1089. When you go on your knees,

1090. or however you pray to God,

1091. you're drawing near to God.

1092. And what it's telling us here

  1093. is that drawing near

  1094. has that purpose of

  1095. worshiping and pleasing God.

  1096. And it's believing

  1097. that God is

1098. as he has revealed himself to be.

  1099. It's all too easy.

  1100. Nowadays, I'm afraid,

1101. to find people just taking,

  1102. saying,

1103. well, I'm actually an evangelical.

1104. I believe in the Bible.

  1105. I believe that I'm a Christian.

  1106. But I don't believe

  1107. such things as

1108. that the death of Christ

  1109. on the cross

1110. was a propitiation for sin.

1111. That there was anything there

  1112. to do with seeking

1113. to pacify the anger of God.

  1114. I don't believe

1115. any of these things at all.

  1116. I'm not saying you can't be a Christian

  1117. without believing that.

1118. But what I'm saying is

1119. that if we cut out

1120. and excise or delete things

1121. in the Bible that we've got

  1122. and say,

  1123. that's not appropriate

  1124. for today's generation.

  1125. That's kind of

  1126. really Old Testament stuff

  1127. we've long since

  1128. moved away from that.

  1129. Well, that's not a sign

  1130. of a believer.

1131. And if we believe things

  1132. about God

  1133. different to what's revealed

  1134. in his word,

  1135. that's not a sign

  1136. of a believer either.

  1137. we believe

  1138. that he is.

  1139. And that he is

1140. as he has revealed himself

  1141. to be

  1142. as recorded

  1143. in his word.

  1144. You know,

  1145. this is so important

  1146. for us, friends,

  1147. to have confidence

  1148. in this Bible

1149. as the word of God.

1150. If we don't have confidence

  1151. that it is

  1152. the word of God,

  1153. that it has

  1154. God's own authority

  1155. and imprint

  1156. on it,

  1157. then everything else

  1158. we believe

  1159. is liable

1160. or can at some time

  1161. just be dismissed

  1162. by us.

  1163. It's on the basis

  1164. of this

  1165. being the word

  1166. of God

  1167. that we actually

  1168. believe

  1169. things about Jesus,

  1170. about his death,

  1171. about his resurrection.

  1172. And that's why

  1173. we believe too

  1174. that God is

  1175. as he has revealed

  1176. himself to be.

  1177. Those who draw near

  1178. to God

  1179. must believe

  1180. that he is

  1181. in other words,

  1182. we come to him

  1183. tonight,

  1184. for example,

  1185. as we've gathered here,

  1186. we've drawn near

  1187. to God

  1188. believing that he is,

  1189. believing that he

  1190. receives us

1191. in the name of Christ,

  1192. believing that he's

  1193. pleased with us

  1194. when our faith

  1195. and confidence

  1196. is placed in Christ,

  1197. believing that he

  1198. will never leave us

  1199. or forsake us

  1200. as we place

  1201. our trust in him.

  1202. All of these things

  1203. and many, many more

  1204. are revealed by God

1205. to be true of himself.

  1206. That's who he is.

  1207. That's how he is.

  1208. And we draw near

  1209. to him believing

  1210. that he is that.

1211. And that he is too

  1212. a rewarder

  1213. of those

  1214. who seek him.

  1215. That he rewards

  1216. those who seek him.

  1217. Really literally,

  1218. again,

  1219. that he is

  1220. a rewarder.

  1221. Even more literally,

  1222. what it says

  1223. is that

  1224. he becomes

  1225. a rewarder.

  1226. And what difference

  1227. does that make?

  1228. It makes a difference

  1229. from the perspective

  1230. of the believer

  1231. or the person

  1232. that's drawing near

  1233. to God.

  1234. When it's saying

  1235. God becomes

  1236. a rewarder

  1237. of those

  1238. who seek him,

  1239. what it's really saying

  1240. is this is what

  1241. we find out

  1242. when we draw near

  1243. to him in faith.

  1244. He becomes then,

1245. as far as our experience

  1246. is concerned,

  1247. he becomes

  1248. a rewarder.

  1249. He becomes one

  1250. who dispenses

  1251. blessings to us.

1252. You don't find that out

  1253. unless you've come

  1254. to believe.

  1255. Unless you've placed

  1256. your trust in him.

  1257. Then he becomes

  1258. a rewarder

  1259. in your case,

  1260. in my case,

  1261. and of all those

  1262. who actually

  1263. seek him

  1264. or seek him

  1265. diligently.

  1266. So the seeking,

  1267. what does it mean?

1268. Well, we use the word

  1269. seeking

  1270. sometimes

  1271. for those

1272. who have not yet come

  1273. perhaps to assurance

  1274. that they're saved.

  1275. You have not come

  1276. to make a confession

  1277. of their faith

  1278. in a public way.

  1279. And we might say,

  1280. well, they're seeking.

  1281. They're seeking the Lord.

  1282. Or people who maybe

  1283. have some thoughts

1284. that they didn't have before

1285. and begin to attend church

  1286. or whatever.

  1287. And we say about

  1288. these people,

  1289. sometimes we say,

  1290. well, they're seeking God.

  1291. They're seekers.

  1292. They're seeking after him.

  1293. And it's not wrong

1294. at all to say that.

  1295. But if you look

  1296. at the Bible,

  1297. most of the cases

  1298. that you find

  1299. of people

  1300. who are seeking

  1301. the Lord

  1302. are already believers.

  1303. Because seeking

  1304. means

  1305. drawing near to him

  1306. and seeking

  1307. are very closely

  1308. connected together,

  1309. virtually the same thing.

  1310. And tonight,

  1311. as a believer,

  1312. you're seeking God.

  1313. You want to meet

  1314. with God.

  1315. You want God

  1316. to speak to you

  1317. through his word.

  1318. In so many ways,

  1319. you're seeking

  1320. the Lord.

  1321. Lord.

  1322. And that's why

  1323. he rewards

  1324. those who seek him.

  1325. Seeking,

  1326. not trying somehow

  1327. or other

  1328. to find God,

  1329. but also,

  1330. but rather,

  1331. having found God

  1332. or being found

  1333. by God

  1334. more accurately.

  1335. We seek after him.

1336. We seek to follow him.

  1337. We seek him

  1338. in the Bible.

  1339. We seek him

  1340. in these means

  1341. of grace

  1342. and church services

  1343. and so on.

  1344. We seek him

  1345. as we come

  1346. ourselves

  1347. privately

  1348. and individually

  1349. to worship him.

  1350. So Enoch's life

  1351. was all about

  1352. seeking God,

  1353. really.

  1354. It was all about

  1355. a life that

  1356. was devoted to God

  1357. in such a way

  1358. that he received

  1359. testimony that

  1360. he was,

  1361. in fact,

  1362. a God-pleaser.

  1363. He was taken up

  1364. by God

  1365. not because of

  1366. his faith,

  1367. but through his faith

  1368. he had this testimony,

1369. he had it said of him

  1370. that he pleased God

  1371. and he drew near

  1372. to God

  1373. believing

  1374. that God is.

  1375. And so again,

1376. I have to ask myself,

  1377. where am I

  1378. in all of this?

1379. Is it enough for me

  1380. that I attend church?

1381. Is it enough for me

  1382. that I preach

  1383. from a pulpit

  1384. or try to preach?

  1385. Is it enough

  1386. that I've spent

  1387. these 37 years

  1388. creating sermons,

  1389. delivering sermons,

  1390. having a place

  1391. in the church

  1392. as a minister?

1393. Is that enough for me?

  1394. Will that give me

  1395. a place of God's approval?

  1396. Will that provide

  1397. a ground of acceptance?

  1398. No.

  1399. I need Christ.

  1400. I need the Jesus

  1401. I preach.

  1402. I need to live

  1403. by faith in him.

  1404. I need to accept

  1405. that God is

  1406. and deliver my life

  1407. over to him.

  1408. So I just looked

  1409. after by him

  1410. that I become

  1411. a pleasing

  1412. individual to God

  1413. and that I come

  1414. at last

  1415. when this life

  1416. is over

  1417. to be taken

  1418. by him

  1419. and to be taken

  1420. into his glory.

  1421. May God bless

  1422. these words

  1423. to us this evening.

  1424. Let's conclude

  1425. our service now

  1426. singing in Psalm 119.

  1427. Psalm 119,

  1428. that's on page 157,

  1429. verses 1 to 8,

  1430. the first section

  1431. of the psalm.

  1432. Blessed are those

  1433. of blameless ways

  1434. who live according

  1435. to God's word.

  1436. Blessed are those

  1437. who keep his laws,

1438. who with their whole heart

  1439. seek the Lord.

  1440. They keep themselves

  1441. from doing wrong

  1442. by walking

  1443. in his perfect ways.

  1444. You have established

  1445. laws for us

  1446. that are to be

  1447. obeyed

  1448. always.

  1449. These verses

  1450. at the beginning

  1451. of the psalm

  1452. to God's praise.

  1453. blessed are those

  1454. of blameless ways

  1455. who live according

  1456. to God's word.

  1457. Blessed are those

  1458. who keep his laws,

1459. who with their whole hearts

  1460. seek the Lord.

  1461. They keep themselves

  1462. from doing wrong

1463. by walking in his perfect ways.

  1464. You have established

  1465. laws for us

  1466. that are to be

  1467. obey your ways.

  1468. O that my ways

  1469. were steadfast, Lord,

  1470. and making you

  1471. decrees my name.

  1472. So when I think

  1473. of your commands,

  1474. I would not feel

  1475. this place for shame.

  1476. I'll preach you

  1477. with an upright heart

  1478. as your just laws

  1479. are learned by me.

  1480. All your decrees

  1481. I will obey.

  1482. Do not forsake me

  1483. after thee.

1484. I'll go to the main door

  1485. after the benediction

  1486. this evening.

  1487. Lord our God,

1488. we ask that you would

  1489. receive all that we

  1490. had offered to you

  1491. in worship.

1492. We pray that you would

  1493. bless what is prepared

1494. for us for our bodily

  1495. needs in the hall.

1496. We ask again that you

  1497. would bless Muriel

1498. as she comes to speak to us.

  1499. And now we pray

1500. that the grace of the

  1501. Lord Jesus Christ,

1502. the love of God the Father,

  1503. and the communion

  1504. of the Holy Spirit

1505. will be with us now

  1506. and evermore.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. The Lord Jesus Christ,

  1509. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1510. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1511. always beCould have a

  1512. народ and forever

1513. as I worship what is

  1514. you know,

  1515. make sure you

  1516. go to war.

  1517. But that's what

  1518. His record is
