  1. Well, let's begin our worship this evening. We're going to sing to God's praise. We're

  2. singing in Psalm 46. As I said this morning, we were looking at the theme of coming to

  3. seek the Lord, the invitation the Lord gives us to seek the Lord while he may be found,

  4. to call upon him while he is near. And this evening, we're looking at the book of Hebrews

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  5. chapter 13. And when we think of seeking God and coming to God, we then ask ourselves, well,

  6. what does God give to us? How do we go on with God? And we're going to look at one of the great

  7. promises that God gives to us, that never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.

  8. And this Psalm, Psalm 46, reminds us of that. God is our refuge and our strength and strength,

  9. a present day. Therefore, although the earth remove, we will not be afraid. We've got the

  10. promise there of God with us. So we'll sing from verse 1 to verse 7, and the tune is Bethesda.

  11. Amen.

  12. God is our refuge and our strength, which leads our present day. Therefore, although the earth

  13. we will not be afraid. Though hills have met, the seas be afraid. Though hills have met, the seas be

  14. be cast, the waters rolling may, and trouble be, yet o'er the hills, by swelling seas do shape.

  15. God is our way in the mountains into the sea. That debt's the day. Glory be with us

  16. God is yourน play optimization. Your ministry of our church. This night has met, you know,

  17. Lord have met. And bless our heart who will ever be with us. Because our heart is a

  18. place

  19. where

  20. in the

  21. Lord

  22. most high

  23. at least

  24. of

  25. God

  26. in

  27. the midst

  28. of

  29. one does

  30. dwell

  31. nothing

  32. shall

  33. us

  34. remove

  35. the

  36. Lord

  37. to

  38. us

  39. and

  40. help

  41. our

  42. will

  43. and

  44. that

  45. right

  46. early

  47. through

  48. the

  49. even

  50. rain

  51. to

  52. much

  53. us

  54. see

  55. the

  56. kingdom

  57. smooth

  58. and

  59. where

  60. the

  61. Lord

  62. God

  63. up

  64. to

  65. read

  66. his

  67. voice

  68. the

  69. earth

  70. earth

  71. is

  72. man

  73. for

  74. fear

  75. the

  76. Lord

  77. of

  78. hosts

  79. upon

  80. our

  81. side

  82. the

  83. Lord

  84. constantly

  85. remain

  86. the

  87. Lord

  88. of

  89. God

  90. of

  91. Jacob

  92. of

  93. the

  94. refuge

  95. are

  96. simply

  97. to

  98. maintain

  99. the

  100. earth

  101. God

  102. let's

  103. come to

  104. God

  105. in

  106. prayer

  107. let us

  108. pray

  109. Lord

  110. our

  111. gracious

  112. God

  113. as we

  114. once

  115. knew

  116. unite

  117. our

  118. hearts

  119. in

  120. prayer

  121. and

  122. praise

  123. to

  124. you

  125. we

  126. thank

  127. you

  128. for

  129. these

  130. wonderful

  131. promises

  132. that

  133. you

  134. give

  135. to

  136. us

  137. through

  138. your

  139. word

  140. the

  141. promises

  142. that

  143. are

  144. so

  145. many

  146. they

  147. are

  148. almost

  149. beyond

  150. our

  151. number

  152. beyond

  153. our

  154. recognizing

  155. just

  156. how

  157. amazing

  158. how

  159. beautiful

  160. the

  161. promises

  162. are

  163. that

  164. you

  165. give

  166. to

  167. us

  168. and

  169. deserving

  170. as

  171. we

  172. are

  173. we

  174. thank

  175. you

  176. Lord

  177. that

  178. your

  179. word

  180. reminds

  181. us

  182. again

  183. and

  184. again

  185. that

  186. although

  187. we

  188. as

  189. a

  190. people

  191. have

  192. have

  193. wandered

  194. and

  195. gone

  196. astray

  197. that

  198. you

  199. are

  200. a

  201. God

  202. who

  203. is

  204. calling

  205. back

  206. that

  207. you

  208. are

  209. a

  210. God

  211. who

  212. is

  213. telling

  214. us

  215. commanding

  216. us

  217. even

  218. to

  219. seek

  220. the

  221. Lord

  222. while

  223. he

  224. may

  225. as

  226. we

  227. have

  228. these

  229. challenges

  230. to

  231. us

  232. as

  233. we

  234. have

  235. the

  236. invitation

  237. of

  238. the

  239. gospel

  240. put

  241. before

  242. us

  243. so

  244. often

  245. we

  246. thank

  247. you

  248. too

  249. that

  250. you

  251. remind

  252. us

  253. of

  254. what

  255. it

  256. entails

  257. what

  258. coming

  259. to

  260. you

  261. means

  262. that

  263. we

  264. come

  265. to

  266. you

  267. as

  268. a

  269. God

  270. who

  271. is

  272. not

  273. just

  274. holy

  275. and

  276. mighty

  277. and

  278. awesome

  279. in

  280. so

  281. many

  282. ways

  283. that

  284. we

  285. could

  286. see

  287. you

  288. as

  289. beyond

  290. our

  291. understanding

  292. but

  293. that

  294. you

  295. are

  296. a

  297. God

  298. who

  299. desires

  300. that

  301. relationship

  302. with

  303. his

  304. people

  305. that

  306. we

  307. as

  308. your

  309. children

  310. could

  311. come

  312. and

  313. lay

  314. before

  315. you

  316. all

  317. our

  318. burdens

  319. calling

  320. you

  321. as

  322. our

  323. father

  324. one

  325. who

  326. is

  327. over

  328. us

  329. in

  330. all

  331. things

  332. the

  333. one

  334. who

  335. looks

  336. after

  337. us

  338. the

  339. one

  340. who

  341. loves

  342. us

  343. the

  344. one

  345. who

  346. has

  347. done

  348. so

  349. much

  350. for

  351. us

  352. we

  353. thank

  354. you

  355. that

  356. in

  357. the

  358. psalm

  359. that

  360. we

  361. have

  362. sung

  363. we

  364. are

  365. reminded

  366. of

  367. the

  368. wonderful

  369. presence

  370. that

  371. you

  372. give

  373. to

  374. your

  375. people

  376. a

  377. presence

  378. that

  379. comes

  380. in

  381. the

  382. midst

  383. of

  384. all

  385. our

  386. circumstances

  387. and

  388. situations

  389. in

  390. life

  391. a

  392. promise

  393. that

  394. is

  395. so

  396. precious

  397. to

  398. your

  399. people

  400. day

  401. after

  402. day

  403. that

  404. we

  405. could

  406. sing

  407. these

  408. words

  409. on you

  410. every

  411. day

  412. and

  413. just

  414. wonder

  415. and

  416. marvel

  417. at

  418. the

  419. meaning

  420. of

  421. them

  422. that

  423. God

  424. is

  425. our

  426. refuge

  427. and

  428. our

  429. strength

  430. our

  431. ever

  432. present

  433. aid

  434. and

  435. no matter

  436. what

  437. this

  438. world

  439. brings

  440. our

  441. way

  442. that

  443. you

  444. are

  445. the

  446. we

  447. go

  448. from

  449. here

  450. this

  451. night

  452. and

  453. into

  454. the

  455. week

  456. before

  457. us

  458. and

  459. whatever

  460. we

  461. are

  462. doing

  463. be it

  464. in

  465. our

  466. quietness

  467. of

  468. our

  469. own

  470. private

  471. devotions

  472. be it

  473. in

  474. our

  475. workplaces

  476. in

  477. our

  478. homes

  479. whatever

  480. we

  481. may

  482. do

  483. Lord

  484. may

  485. your

  486. words

  487. stay

  488. with

  489. us

  490. in

  491. our

  492. minds

  493. that

  494. we

  495. will

  496. be

  497. able

  498. to

  499. take

  500. even

  501. a

  502. few

  503. words

  504. of

  505. it

  506. with

  507. us

  508. this

  509. evening

  510. and

  511. meditate

  512. upon

  513. them

  514. and

  515. even

  516. to

  517. think

  518. of

  519. the

  520. promise

  521. which

  522. we

  523. will

  524. be

  525. studying

  526. I

  527. will

  528. never

  529. leave

  530. you

  531. or

  532. forsake

  533. you

  534. may

  535. we

  536. know

  537. the

  538. wonder

  539. of

  540. that

  541. promise

  542. in

  543. the

  544. week

  545. ahead

  546. and

  547. in

  548. all

  549. the

  550. days

  551. ahead

  552. for

  553. we

  554. thank

  555. you

  556. that

  557. that

  558. is

  559. a

  560. promise

  561. that

  562. is

  563. often

  564. repeated

  565. in

  566. your

  567. word

  568. throughout

  569. the

  570. Old

  571. Testament

  572. and

  573. the

  574. New

  575. Testament

  576. we

  577. find

  578. that

  579. it

  580. is

  581. a

  582. promise

  583. given

  584. to

  585. many

  586. people

  587. in

  588. many

  589. circumstances

  590. and

  591. that

  592. it

  593. is

  594. indeed

  595. for

  596. all

  597. your

  598. people

  599. as

  600. we

  601. go

  602. on

  603. in

  604. life's

  605. journey

  606. that

  607. as

  608. we

  609. put

  610. our

  611. trust

  612. in

  613. the

  614. Lord

  615. Jesus

  616. Christ

  617. that

  618. we

  619. have

  620. that

  621. confidence

  622. assurance

  623. that

  624. you

  625. are

  626. with

  627. us

  628. and

  629. may

  630. your

  631. people

  632. not

  633. just

  634. as

  635. we

  636. gather

  637. here

  638. in

  639. your

  640. name

  641. but

  642. as

  643. we

  644. tune

  645. in

  646. online

  647. but

  648. your

  649. people

  650. far

  651. and

  652. wide

  653. throughout

  654. the

  655. world

  656. may

  657. they

  658. know

  659. the

  660. wonder

  661. of

  662. this

  663. promise

  664. may

  665. they

  666. know

  667. your

  668. presence

  669. with

  670. them

  671. for

  672. we

  673. thank

  674. you

  675. that

  676. you

  677. are

  678. not

  679. a

  680. God

  681. who

  682. is

  683. confined

  684. that

  685. you

  686. are

  687. not

  688. a

  689. God

  690. who

  691. as

  692. we

  693. were

  694. thinking

  695. of

  696. this

  697. morning

  698. is

  699. in

  700. the

  701. heavens

  702. high

  703. and

  704. cannot

  705. be

  706. reached

  707. that

  708. you

  709. have

  710. come

  711. to

  712. us

  713. that

  714. you

  715. have

  716. come

  717. down

  718. from

  719. heaven

  720. that

  721. the

  722. word

  723. has

  724. become

  725. flesh

  726. and

  727. dwelt

  728. among

  729. us

  730. that

  731. we

  732. know

  733. that

  734. in

  735. the

  736. person

  737. of

  738. Jesus

  739. Christ

  740. and

  741. that

  742. we

  743. know

  744. the

  745. words

  746. of

  747. Jesus

  748. even

  749. as

  750. he

  751. said

  752. as

  753. he

  754. would

  755. go

  756. from

  757. us

  758. that

  759. he

  760. would

  761. leave

  762. the

  763. comfort

  764. or

  765. the

  766. Holy

  767. Spirit

  768. to be

  769. with

  770. us

  771. and

  772. that

  773. we

  774. have

  775. the

  776. promise

  777. for

  778. always

  779. even

  780. to

  781. the

  782. end

  783. of

  784. the

  785. age

  786. and

  787. so

  788. surround

  789. your

  790. people

  791. anew

  792. this

  793. night

  794. Lord

  795. may

  796. you

  797. hear

  798. the

  799. worship

  800. of

  801. your

  802. name

  803. and

  804. the

  805. praising

  806. of

  807. your

  808. name

  809. from

  810. far

  811. and

  812. wide

  813. tonight

  814. as

  815. we

  816. thank

  817. you

  818. for

  819. the

  820. fact

  821. that

  822. you

  823. have

  824. your

  825. people

  826. near

  827. and

  828. far

  829. that

  830. you

  831. are

  832. building

  833. your

  834. church

  835. and

  836. so

  837. bless

  838. us

  839. here

  840. together

  841. Lord

  842. we

  843. thank

  844. you

  845. that

  846. as

  847. we

  848. can

  849. come

  850. to

  851. know

  852. you

  853. through

  854. your

  855. word

  856. that

  857. you

  858. already

  859. know

  860. us

  861. that

  862. you

  863. know

  864. our

  865. every

  866. thought

  867. and

  868. desire

  869. and

  870. motive

  871. that

  872. you

  873. know

  874. exactly

  875. where

  876. we

  877. are

  878. and

  879. what

  880. we

  881. need

  882. that

  883. you

  884. know

  885. nations

  886. and

  887. all

  888. that's

  889. going

  890. on

  891. in

  892. our

  893. world

  894. with

  895. the

  896. conflicts

  897. that

  898. surround

  899. us

  900. and

  901. we

  902. see

  903. it

  904. each

  905. day

  906. of

  907. our

  908. lives

  909. just

  910. now

  911. we

  912. see

  913. tensions

  914. rising

  915. we

  916. see

  917. something

  918. that

  919. we

  920. cannot

  921. see

  922. an

  923. end

  924. to

  925. but

  926. yet

  927. Lord

  928. we

  929. thank

  930. you

  931. that

  932. it

  933. is

  934. not

  935. in

  936. the

  937. hands

  938. of

  939. man

  940. but

  941. in

  942. your

  943. hands

  944. oh

  945. Lord

  946. and

  947. that

  948. there

  949. is

  950. a

  951. reason

  952. and

  953. a

  954. purpose

  955. for

  956. everything

  957. even

  958. the

  959. things

  960. that

  961. we

  962. cannot

  963. understand

  964. the

  965. things

  966. that

  967. we

  968. see

  969. and

  970. cause

  971. so

  972. much

  973. pain

  974. and

  975. worry

  976. and

  977. fear

  978. the

  979. things

  980. in

  981. this

  982. life

  983. on

  984. a

  985. large

  986. scale

  987. that

  988. concern

  989. us

  990. as

  991. a

  992. world

  993. and

  994. even

  995. the

  996. things

  997. of

  998. this

  999. life

  1000. that

  1001. maybe

  1002. only

  1003. affect

  1004. ourselves

  1005. and

  1006. our

  1007. own

  1008. hearts

  1009. and

  1010. yet

  1011. cause

  1012. us

  1013. grief

  1014. and

  1015. pain

  1016. they

  1017. are

  1018. known

  1019. to

  1020. you

  1021. and

  1022. Lord

  1023. we

  1024. thank

  1025. you

  1026. that

  1027. you

  1028. are

  1029. the

  1030. one

  1031. who

  1032. is

  1033. able

  1034. to

  1035. bring

  1036. peace

  1037. that

  1038. you

  1039. are

  1040. the

  1041. one

  1042. who

  1043. is

  1044. able

  1045. to

  1046. bring

  1047. a

  1048. calmness

  1049. over

  1050. us

  1051. Lord

  1052. in

  1053. the

  1054. midst

  1055. of

  1056. it

  1057. all

  1058. and

  1059. we

  1060. just

  1061. pray

  1062. Lord

  1063. for

  1064. you

  1065. in

  1066. your

  1067. power

  1068. and

  1069. by

  1070. your

  1071. will

  1072. to

  1073. come

  1074. to

  1075. come

  1076. oh

  1077. Lord

  1078. and

  1079. show

  1080. yourself

  1081. in

  1082. a

  1083. mighty

  1084. way

  1085. to

  1086. this

  1087. world

  1088. that

  1089. we

  1090. would

  1091. bow

  1092. before

  1093. you

  1094. Lord

  1095. that

  1096. we

  1097. would

  1098. acknowledge

  1099. you

  1100. for

  1101. you

  1102. reminding

  1103. us

  1104. again

  1105. and

  1106. again

  1107. through

  1108. all

  1109. of

  1110. these

  1111. years

  1112. that

  1113. have

  1114. just

  1115. gone

  1116. past

  1117. in

  1118. the

  1119. midst

  1120. of

  1121. a

  1122. time

  1123. of

  1124. war

  1125. a

  1126. time

  1127. of

  1128. disease

  1129. a

  1130. time

  1131. of

  1132. the

  1133. virus

  1134. that

  1135. took

  1136. over

  1137. our

  1138. lives

  1139. for

  1140. so

  1141. long

  1142. in

  1143. this

  1144. world

  1145. and

  1146. brought

  1147. so

  1148. many

  1149. things

  1150. to

  1151. a

  1152. stand

  1153. still

  1154. Lord

  1155. you

  1156. have

  1157. spoken

  1158. and

  1159. yet

  1160. seemingly

  1161. we

  1162. haven't

  1163. listened

  1164. and so

  1165. Lord

  1166. we

  1167. pray

  1168. have

  1169. mercy

  1170. upon

  1171. us

  1172. that

  1173. you

  1174. would

  1175. do

  1176. us

  1177. good

  1178. Lord

  1179. and

  1180. not

  1181. bring

  1182. even

  1183. more

  1184. that

  1185. we

  1186. cannot

  1187. comprehend

  1188. but

  1189. bring

  1190. days

  1191. of

  1192. your

  1193. power

  1194. bring

  1195. days

  1196. of

  1197. salvation

  1198. brings

  1199. days

  1200. of

  1201. your

  1202. reviving

  1203. power

  1204. into

  1205. our

  1206. midst

  1207. we

  1208. pray

  1209. that

  1210. for

  1211. ourselves

  1212. and

  1213. for

  1214. the

  1215. generations

  1216. coming

  1217. after

  1218. us

  1219. Lord

  1220. that

  1221. we

  1222. would

  1223. see

  1224. a

  1225. world

  1226. where

  1227. your

  1228. glory

  1229. is

  1230. known

  1231. and

  1232. where

  1233. your

  1234. name

  1235. is

  1236. praised

  1237. Lord

  1238. we

  1239. commit

  1240. ourselves

  1241. now

  1242. into

  1243. your

  1244. hands

  1245. we

  1246. ask

  1247. that

  1248. you

  1249. will

  1250. be

  1251. with

  1252. us

  1253. Lord

  1254. and

  1255. bless

  1256. your

  1257. word

  1258. and

  1259. the

  1260. praising

  1261. of

  1262. your

  1263. name

  1264. may

  1265. we

  1266. lift

  1267. our

  1268. voices

  1269. to

  1270. you

  1271. and

  1272. praise

  1273. anew

  1274. this

  1275. night

  1276. that

  1277. you

  1278. are

  1279. God

  1280. and

  1281. there

  1282. is

  1283. no

  1284. other

  1285. help

  1286. us

  1287. to

  1288. look

  1289. to

  1290. you

  1291. help

  1292. us

  1293. to

  1294. rest

  1295. in

  1296. you

  1297. help

  1298. us

  1299. to

  1300. know

  1301. your

  1302. presence

  1303. continually

  1304. with

  1305. us

  1306. as

  1307. we

  1308. seek

  1309. your

  1310. face

  1311. at

  1312. this

  1313. time

  1314. and

  1315. we

  1316. come

  1317. anew

  1318. confessing

  1319. our

  1320. sins

  1321. oh

  1322. Lord

  1323. we

  1324. know

  1325. that

  1326. there

  1327. is

  1328. much

  1329. in

  1330. our

  1331. heart

  1332. that

  1333. we

  1334. would

  1335. long

  1336. to

  1337. change

  1338. and

  1339. we

  1340. thank

  1341. you

  1342. that

  1343. you

  1344. are

  1345. a

  1346. God

  1347. of

  1348. change

  1349. you're

  1350. the

  1351. one

  1352. who

  1353. is

  1354. able

  1355. to

  1356. shape

  1357. us

  1358. to

  1359. mold

  1360. us

  1361. to

  1362. right

  1363. the

  1364. wrongs

  1365. in

  1366. our

  1367. heart

  1368. to

  1369. rid

  1370. the

  1371. blemishes

  1372. to

  1373. bring

  1374. us

  1375. through

  1376. oh

  1377. Lord

  1378. even

  1379. the

  1380. purifier's

  1381. fire

  1382. to

  1383. know

  1384. that

  1385. cleansing

  1386. to

  1387. know

  1388. that

  1393. Lord

  1394. that

  1395. you

  1396. would

  1397. make

  1398. us

  1399. more

  1400. and

  1401. more

  1402. like

  1403. you

  1404. so

  1405. Lord

  1406. help

  1407. us

  1408. to

  1409. reflect

  1410. you

  1411. and

  1412. to

  1413. give

  1414. glory

  1415. to

  1416. your

  1418. and

  1419. surround

  1420. us

  1421. Lord

  1422. even

  1423. now

  1424. with

  1425. your

  1426. presence

  1427. as

  1428. we

  1429. ask

  1430. all

  1431. these

1682. remember those who are in prison as though in prison with them and those who are mistreated since you are you also are in the body let marriage be held in honor among all and let the marriage bed be undefiled for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have for he has said i will never leave you nor forsake you so we can

1683. confidently say the lord is my helper i will not fear what man can do to me remember your leaders those who spoke to you the word of god consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith jesus christ is the same yesterday and today and forever do not be led away by diversion strange teachings for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace not by foods which have not benefited

1684. benefited benefited benefited those devoted to them we have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat for the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp so jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood

1685. outside the camp and bear the camp and bear the reproach he endured for here we have no lasting city but we seek the city that is to come through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to god that is the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name

1686. do not neglect to do good do not neglect to do good to do good and to share what you have for such sacrifices are pleasing to god obey your leaders and submit to them for they are keeping watch over your souls as those who will have to give an account let them do this with joy and not with groaning for that would be of no advantage to you pray for us for we are sure that we have a clear conscience

1687. things I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you

1688. the sooner and so on. May God bless that reading from his word.

1689. Before we turn back to this passage we're going to sing once again to his praise in Psalm 61,

1690. the Sing Psalms version, page 78 of the psalm books. We'll sing from verse 1 down to verse 6.

1691. Psalm 61 on page 78, the tune is Belmont. Oh hear my urgent cry, my God, and listen to my plea.

1692. From earth's remotest bounds I call when my heart faints in me. We'll sing from verse 1 to 6 to God's praise.

1693. Oh hear my urgent cry, my God, and listen to my plea.

1694. From earth's remotest bounds I call when my heart faints in me.

1695. Oh hear my urgent cry, my God, and listen to my plea.

1696. Oh hear my urgent cry, my God, and listen to my plea.

1697. From earth's remotest bounds I call when my heart faints in me. Oh God, conduct me to the rock that's high,

1698. far than I. For you my refuge from the foe.

1699. My power of strength on high. Oh let me dwell within your tent, forever there to live.

1700. O Lord, the shelter of your wings. Oh Lord, the shelter of your wings. Oh Lord, the refuge which they give.

1701. For you have held my foe. Oh God, and you have given me the heritage of those who fear.

1702. Your name God, here may. Come to earth, my God.

1703. On earth's берenten Rich anew. Oh my God, the refuge of the harbor.

  1704. Thank you.

1705. We can turn back to our reading in Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

1706. We're going to look at verse 5 and 6, particularly together this evening.

  1707. Hebrews chapter 13, verse 5.

    Hebrews 13:5

1708. Keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have.

1709. For he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1710. So we can confidently say, the Lord is my helper.

  1711. I will not fear.

1712. What can man do to me?

1713. When we think of God's promises, there are so many of them it's hard for us sometimes just to take them in

1714. and just to think, well, what's my favorite promise that God gives to me?

1715. When you think of them, you start numbering them.

1716. You start going through them.

1717. You just realize just how many there are and you're almost just scraping the surface the more that you go on.

1718. But we are told that we are to hold on to these promises.

1719. These promises should be precious more and more to us and hold them firmly and closely to us

1720. because they are the promises that so often keep us going day by day

1721. and keep us going through highs and lows in this life.

1722. Now, some people have tried to study, go right through the scriptures

1723. and just work out just how many promises of God there are.

1724. Efforts have been made by reading right through and thinking,

1725. well, there's a promise of God to his people.

1726. There are various estimates as to how many promises there are.

1727. Most would sort of narrow it down to around 8,000 promises that God gives to his people.

1728. Now, some of them can sound very similar.

1729. Some of them can be repeated again.

1730. But nonetheless, they are still a promise that God gives in a time and in an experience for his people.

1731. You think of that, 8,000 promises that God gives.

1732. How many promises have you broken in your own life?

1733. How many promises have you made to people and you've let them down?

1734. And yet every promise that God gives to his people, they're secure and they've come to pass.

1735. They are fulfilled in Christ.

1736. The amazement of God's promises to us.

1737. And when we think of songs and psalms that we sing, how many of them contain,

1738. so many of the promises that God gives to us, which we sing through.

1739. Many of the psalms, we sing promises that God has given us.

1740. We think of many of the hymns that have been written.

1741. We think of the promises that God has given.

1742. There was one hymn written, standing on the promises of Christ, my King.

1743. It's just a psalm that was written by someone who was in the midst of a period of ill health, grave ill health,

1744. at the point where this person thought that they were going to die at around the age of 30.

1745. And yet they survived and lived more than 40 years after that.

1746. And yet this person wrote this hymn.

1747. In the midst of that, given confidence, given assurance of God's help through his promises.

1748. And just to quote some of the words from it, it says,

1749. Is that how we live our own lives?

1750. Do we live it in that way of standing on the promises of God, on the word of God,

1751. and the confidence that that gives to us?

1752. As you go through the scriptures, you find that the promises of God are so many and so varied.

1753. From the beginning, when we see God's promise to Noah,

  1754. where he said,

1755. Never again will I flood this world.

1756. And you go through to the promise that Christ himself gives in John 14,

1757. when he speaks of the fact that he is going to prepare a place for his people.

1758. And when he says that, he says,

1759. If I go to prepare a place, I will come again,

1760. and I will take you to be with me where I am.

1761. So you have almost the promises from the beginning right to the end,

1762. and the promise that Christ gives to his people of a place,

1763. and a time when he will return to take his people to him.

1764. But think of that promise that Jesus gives,

1765. that he goes to prepare a place,

1766. and that he will come again.

1767. When we think of what we were looking at this morning in Isaiah 55,

1768. that wonderful, almost gospel passage in Isaiah 55,

  1769. where it's a great invitation,

1770. Come to the waters, come all who are thirsty.

1771. And then the verse we were looking at,

1772. Seek the Lord while he may be found,

1773. call upon him while he is near,

1774. that there's this urgency to come to the Lord while we have opportunity.

1775. As I said this morning, we're going to think,

1776. Well, what does it mean for us now?

1777. What does that mean for us on a day-to-day basis?

1778. We seek the Lord, we find the Lord, we love the Lord,

1779. but what does he give us now?

1780. And especially when you think of that text in John 14,

  1781. when he says,

1782. I am going to prepare a place for you.

  1783. I am going away.

1784. He says that to his disciples.

1785. Now, another place, I am going away,

1786. but I will leave my comforter, the Holy Spirit.

1787. We often maybe start to think,

1788. Well, where is he now?

1789. Has he left us in the meantime?

1790. Has he left us in the midst of all the dangers

1791. and the turmoil that surrounds us,

1792. all the anxieties and fears that come our way?

1793. Has he just left us to go on blindly by ourselves?

1794. And no doubt there are times when we maybe feel

  1795. that sense of isolation,

1796. when we maybe feel that we're alone,

  1797. that we're struggling.

1798. But has he left us?

1799. Well, it comes back again to standing

1800. on the promises of Christ our King.

1801. And what is the promises that he has given to us,

1802. repeated again and again and again through Scripture?

1803. Well, one of the most wonderful promises

1804. he gives to us as we look through Scripture

1805. is that he has not left us

1806. and that he will not leave us.

1807. When you look at Scripture,

1808. you find that it's constantly with us,

  1809. always there for us

1810. when we put our trust in him.

1811. And that this is true until he comes again.

  1812. Hebrews 13, verse 5,

    Hebrews 13:5

1813. is this promise that we're looking at together this evening.

1814. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1815. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1816. And it's a promise, as we often see in Hebrews,

1817. is quotes from the Old Testament.

1818. And you go back to the Old Testament

1819. and you find this promise given.

1820. In particular, it was given to Joshua

1821. at a time when he was taking over from Moses

1822. as the leader of God's people,

1823. as he was taking them on into the promised land.

  1824. Joshua was anxious.

1825. He was fearful what this meant.

1826. How could he do it?

1827. Well, God gave him this promise

1828. and he repeated this promise to him.

1829. You read it in Deuteronomy 31, verse 8.

    Deuteronomy 31:8

  1830. Moses assuring him,

1831. the Lord goes before you and will be with you.

1832. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

  1833. Do not be afraid.

  1834. Do not be discouraged.

1835. And then God himself gives him,

1836. Joshua, that promise in Joshua 1, verse 5.

    Joshua 1:5

1837. No one will be able to stand up against you

1838. all the days of your life.

1839. As I was with Moses,

1840. so I will be with you.

1841. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1842. You have that promise repeated.

1843. And it's an often repeated promise to God's people.

1844. When he calls his people back to himself,

1845. he says, return to me and I will return to you.

1846. I will be with you.

1847. That sense of relationship that God has with his people.

1848. You look at it in the New Testament context.

1849. And Jesus, before he left this world,

1850. before he ascended to God,

1851. what did he say to his people as he left them?

1852. He gave them a command.

1853. He gave them a commission.

  1854. In Matthew 28, verse 19,

    Matthew 28:19

  1855. he said,

1856. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,

1857. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son

1858. and of the Holy Spirit

1859. and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

1860. And he gave them this promise, this assurance.

1861. And surely I am with you always

1862. to the very end of the age.

1863. He gave them this promise.

1864. And this is a promise that we have today ourselves.

1865. That as we put our trust in the Lord,

  1866. we have this promise,

1867. I will never leave you or forsake you.

1868. And as in verse 6 it says in Hebrews 13,

1869. it goes on to say,

1870. So we can confidently say,

1871. The Lord is my helper.

  1872. I will not fear.

1873. What can man do to me?

1874. There is confidence that this promise brings.

1875. The Lord is my helper.

  1876. The Lord has promised.

1877. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1878. And the Lord often gives this promise

1879. in the midst of challenging times.

1880. And it's no different for ourselves today.

1881. When we think of the world in which we live

1882. and all the worries and concerns

1883. that we see around us on a daily basis,

1884. does not the word of God give us confidence?

1885. Does not God's promise give us confidence?

1886. Never will I leave you.

1887. Never will I forsake you.

1888. Not until the Lord returns.

1889. But we want to just look at this promise

1890. for a few moments together.

1891. First of all, we're going to think

1892. of the background to it.

1893. And then we'll think of the promise itself.

1894. And then we'll think of,

1895. well, what kind of response does it call for?

1896. So first we want to just see a little of

1897. the background to this promise.

1898. As you read through the book of Hebrews,

1899. it's a book that's full of so much teaching

  1900. from the Old Testament.

1901. The Old Testament is often quoted in it.

1902. And it's a book that was written to the people

1903. in the midst of various trials and tribulations

1904. that they were experiencing in their lives.

1905. And the writer to the Hebrews is urging the people

1906. to maintain both their confession,

1907. their confession that God is their Lord,

1908. that they have this relationship with them,

1909. but also that their confidence.

1910. Confidence is a word that we will see

1911. come up again and again throughout the book of Hebrews.

1912. We'll look a little bit about that at the end

1913. as we think of the response this calls for.

1914. But it's about having a confidence in God.

1915. And this confidence, as you see as you read through it,

1916. is so often in light of their suffering.

1917. For example, in Hebrews 10, verse 34,

    Hebrews 10:34

  1918. it says,

1919. You sympathized with those in prison

1920. and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property

1921. because you knew that you yourselves

1922. had better and lasting possessions.

1923. There was this confidence in God.

1924. Even though many of their people were in prison,

  1925. probably unjustly,

1926. their property was being taken from them,

  1927. confiscated,

1928. but they knew what they had.

1929. They knew they had a kingdom belonging to God,

1930. a kingdom that could not be shaken.

1931. As again, you read as you go through the book of Hebrews.

1932. And that's what the writer was doing.

1933. He was bringing them to this point

1934. where they would have this confidence

  1935. and this assurance,

  1936. based on this promise,

1937. I will never leave you

  1938. and never forsake you.

1939. And you find that as you come towards the end of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1940. chapter 10 onwards,

1941. there's a lot of kind of practical teaching for us.

  1942. In chapter 10,

1943. you have a number of texts there

1944. that we can be quite familiar with.

1945. We've quoted one there in verse 34.

  1946. There's kind of, there's suffering,

1947. but there's other verses too

  1948. that you think of,

1949. the not neglecting to meet together.

  1950. In verse 25,

1951. as is the habit of some,

  1952. but encouraging one another

1953. and all the more as you see

  1954. the day drawing near.

1955. There is this call to worship

  1956. and this assurance,

1957. this confidence that faith gives.

1958. So you have that full assurance of faith

  1959. in chapter 10,

1960. which then goes into chapter 11,

  1961. that wonderful passage

1962. of the faith of God's people,

1963. so many from the Old Testament.

1964. the faith that they had

1965. in the midst of so many different challenges.

1966. Then you have chapter 12,

1967. where we're encouraged to not grow weary,

1968. but to run the race,

1969. to run the race with patience,

  1970. looking to Jesus,

1971. the founder and perfecter of our faith,

1972. that we have one who we can look to,

1973. one who is with us.

1974. Then later on in Hebrews 12,

1975. it says in verse 28,

  1976. therefore,

1977. since we are receiving a kingdom

  1978. that cannot be shaken,

  1979. let us be thankful

1980. and so worship God acceptably

  1981. with reverence and awe,

1982. for our God is a consuming fire.

1983. We have this worship of God

1984. and God seen as a consuming fire.

1985. And this call to worship

1986. is what follows on into chapter 13,

1987. where we see it in practical ways

  1988. and practical experiences,

1989. how our focus is still to be on God,

  1990. who is with us.

  1991. And verse 5 and 6,

  1992. as you're reading through chapter 13,

1993. it may almost seem like an odd verse.

1994. When you think of what it's talking about,

1995. you see so many things

1996. that the challenges of the people faced

  1997. in chapter 13,

1998. so many of the challenges

1999. that we face ourselves today,

2000. challenges to love one another,

  2001. to have brotherly love,

2002. to not neglect hospitality to strangers,

2003. the fact that there is persecution,

2004. the fact that there is lust

2005. that can often so much rule our hearts,

2006. the fact that there is a love of money

2007. that takes people away from God.

2008. And then as you go on past verse 6,

2009. you've got the place of faith

2010. and the word of God,

2011. but also in the midst of false teaching.

2012. And then it goes on to speak almost of

2013. the leaders, the politicians of the day.

  2014. There's a whole host

2015. and a variety of things

  2016. being spoken about there,

2017. but they're not separate from our faith.

2018. They're so often the challenges

  2019. to our faith

2020. and the places where we think,

2021. well, has God left us

2022. in the midst of all of these challenges?

  2023. And so verse 5 and 6

2024. are almost like a central point of

2025. let's keep our focus on the Lord.

2026. Remember, in the midst of all of these challenges,

2027. of all these temptations that come our way,

2028. the Lord, he will never leave us.

2029. And so anything else that may seem that

2030. this is what we need,

2031. this is what will help,

  2032. no.

2033. What we need is the one who has said,

2034. I will never leave you or forsake you.

2035. And when we have that,

2036. we can confidently then say,

2037. the Lord is my help.

2038. There is a bit of the background

  2039. to this text.

  2040. Challenging days,

2041. days when there's so many different things going on,

2042. days just like our own,

2043. but with this wonderful promise

2044. in the midst of it.

2045. Never will I leave you.

2046. Never will I forsake you.

  2047. And many a Christian

  2048. has testified to this.

  2049. I'm sure many a Christian here

2050. can testify to these words.

2051. The Lord is my helper.

2052. The fact that he will never leave us

  2053. or forsake us.

2054. Some have testified to this

  2055. in spectacular ways.

2056. I'll give you one example.

  2057. A missionary, John Payton.

2058. He went to the New Hebrides

  2059. in the Pacific Islands.

2060. Small cluster of islands together there.

2061. And he went to one of these islands

2062. to minister among the tribes there.

  2063. And they were fearful

  2064. of these people coming

  2065. and especially coming

2066. with the word of God.

2067. There were people who went,

  2068. the missionaries who went,

  2069. were often attacked.

2070. Some were many were killed

2071. for coming with their faith.

  2072. John Payton,

2073. he went and was faithful to God,

2074. but he had his own challenges.

2075. And there was this one night

2076. when he with his wife

  2077. were staying

  2078. in the mission headquarters.

  2079. They were staying there,

2080. just the two of them there this night.

  2081. But outside,

2082. they saw that the local tribes

  2083. had surrounded the place

  2084. that they were staying.

2085. And they were just waiting

  2086. for them to attack.

  2087. And they were fearful.

2088. John Payton and his wife

  2089. were terrified.

  2090. And for that night,

2091. they were praying during the night

2092. for the Lord to protect them

2093. and the Lord to keep them.

  2094. When daylight came,

  2095. they were astonished

2096. to see the tribe leave

  2097. without attacking them.

2098. And they were just amazed.

  2099. They thanked God

  2100. for his protection

  2101. during that night.

2102. And they carried on their ministry.

  2103. And little by little,

  2104. the Spirit of God

  2105. worked in that place.

  2106. And people started

  2107. to come to faith.

  2108. And a year later,

2109. the chief of the tribe

  2110. was converted.

  2111. He became a Christian.

  2112. And John Payton

  2113. spoke to him

  2114. about his faith.

2115. And then he asked him

  2116. about this night

  2117. when they had surrounded

  2118. his home,

  2119. when himself

2120. and his wife were there.

  2121. And he asked,

2122. how come you didn't attack?

  2123. Well, the chief

  2124. seemed astonished.

  2125. And he said,

2126. well, who were all those men

2127. who were there with you?

  2128. And John Payton said,

  2129. what?

  2130. Men?

  2131. There was nobody there

  2132. that night

2133. but myself and my wife.

  2134. And the chief said,

2135. well, there were hundreds of men

  2136. standing round your home

  2137. protecting you

  2138. with swords

  2139. and bright shining clothes.

  2140. And then John Payton

  2141. well knew

2142. that is how the Lord

  2143. had answered his prayer

  2144. for protection

  2145. in a spectacular

  2146. and amazing way.

2147. And we say to ourselves,

  2148. well, that's well

  2149. and good for him

2150. but that's not the kind

2151. of things that I see

  2152. in my life.

2153. But that's not the norm.

  2154. But it doesn't mean

2155. that God is not with us.

  2156. It doesn't mean

2157. that God has left us.

  2158. He is with us.

  2159. And there are many

  2160. ordinary ways

2161. in which God reminds us

2162. too that he is with us.

  2163. A word and season

  2164. from his Bible,

  2165. from his word himself.

2166. A friend who gives us comfort.

  2167. An unexpected provision.

2168. There are so many ways

  2169. that he reminds us

  2170. that he is near.

  2171. And why is that?

  2172. Because he has promised,

2173. never will I leave you,

2174. never will I forsake you.

  2175. Whether it's the ordinary

  2176. or the spectacular,

  2177. it doesn't matter.

  2178. It is God's promise

  2179. to his people.

2180. And we see a little

  2181. of this promise

2182. as we look at verse 5 here.

  2183. what it does

  2184. for the people then

  2185. and what it does

  2186. for ourselves today.

  2187. It gives them

  2188. a renewed focus.

  2189. It gives them

  2190. a renewed confidence

  2191. and encouragement

  2192. in their experience.

2193. So that in the midst

  2194. of their people

  2195. being put into prison,

  2196. persecution,

  2197. their property

  2198. being taken from them,

  2199. all of these things,

  2200. they still have

  2201. this confidence.

2202. the Lord is my helper.

2203. The Lord is my helper

  2204. because that is

  2205. what he has promised.

  2206. And when you look

  2207. at this promise

2208. and how it comes up

  2209. in the Old Testament

  2210. and right through

  2211. into the New Testament,

2212. into our own present day,

  2213. it continually reminds us

  2214. that God has made

  2215. this promise

  2216. and has kept

  2217. this promise

  2218. through time.

  2219. It is God himself

  2220. who has given it.

  2221. It is not just

  2222. a promise

  2223. from man,

  2224. but for he

  2225. has said,

  2226. the Lord has said,

2227. I will never leave you

  2228. nor forsake you.

  2229. God doesn't

  2230. break his promises.

  2231. He keeps

  2232. every one of them.

  2233. And behind this

  2234. is his covenant promise.

  2235. That is what is

  2236. behind these words,

2237. I will never leave you

  2238. nor forsake you.

  2239. It's equivalent

  2240. to the promise

  2241. God made

  2242. in his covenant

  2243. in the Old Testament.

2244. I will be your God

  2245. and you will be

  2246. my people.

  2247. Where he will

  2248. keep us secure.

  2249. But it means

  2250. trusting in him.

  2251. It means going on

  2252. with him.

  2253. Because the Bible

  2254. also reminds us

  2255. of the opposite

  2256. of this.

  2257. And that is

  2258. almost the abandonment

  2259. of God.

  2260. When God,

  2261. we turn our back

  2262. on God

  2263. and God

  2264. leaves us

  2265. to our own

  2266. devices.

  2267. You see it again

  2268. throughout Scripture.

  2269. You see it

  2270. in the Old Testament

  2271. in Deuteronomy.

  2272. Again,

  2273. there's a warning

  2274. in chapter 31

  2275. verse 16.

  2276. God says,

  2277. they will forsake me

  2278. and break the covenant

  2279. I made with them.

  2280. On that day

  2281. I will become angry

  2282. with them

  2283. and forsake them.

2284. I will hide my face

  2285. from them

2286. and they will be destroyed.

  2287. Many disasters

  2288. and difficulties

  2289. will come upon them.

  2290. And on that day

  2291. they will ask,

  2292. have not these disasters

  2293. come upon us

  2294. because our God

  2295. is not with us?

  2296. They recognize

  2297. in the midst

  2298. of disobedience

  2299. our God

  2300. is not

  2301. with us.

  2302. And the same

  2303. would be true

  2304. in Isaiah's day

  2305. as the people

  2306. turned their back

  2307. on God.

  2308. But God

  2309. is calling them

  2310. to seek him,

  2311. to come back

  2312. to him.

  2313. The same is true

  2314. here in the days

  2315. of the Hebrews

2316. as they may be tempted

  2317. to turn their back

  2318. on God

  2319. that they would

  2320. fail to see God

  2321. with them.

  2322. The same is true

2323. in the book of Romans

  2324. as God says,

  2325. well,

2326. if that's what you want

  2327. I'll leave you

  2328. to your own devices.

  2329. It brings disaster

  2330. upon us.

  2331. But the greatest

  2332. disaster of all

2333. is that we would be

  2334. consumed

  2335. by this God

  2336. for turning

  2337. our back

  2338. on him.

2339. And that is a warning

  2340. that the book

  2341. of Hebrews

  2342. gives again

  2343. and again

  2344. as well.

  2345. But the writer

  2346. to the Hebrews

  2347. keeps saying,

  2348. but you have

  2349. a kingdom.

  2350. But you have

  2351. a God.

  2352. You have one

  2353. whose kingdom

  2354. cannot be shaken.

  2355. You have one

  2356. whose kingdom

  2357. is secure.

  2358. You have one

  2359. who has

  2360. made this promise

  2361. to you.

2362. I will never leave you

  2363. nor forsake you.

  2364. And this means

  2365. that we can have

  2366. confidence

  2367. to say

  2368. the Lord

  2369. is my helper.

  2370. We can be abandoned

  2371. by others

  2372. around us.

  2373. We can be left

  2374. helpless

  2375. in so many ways.

  2376. But God

  2377. will not leave us.

  2378. there was a

  2379. story from the

  2380. Second World War

  2381. of six pilots

  2382. who had left

  2383. an aircraft carrier

  2384. in an afternoon

2385. to go on a mission.

  2386. They were in

  2387. the waters

  2388. where there were

  2389. many submarines

  2390. and they had been

  2391. tasked to go

  2392. and fly around

  2393. and see if they

  2394. could spot

  2395. submarines.

  2396. And they had.

  2397. They had spotted

  2398. a number

  2399. of submarines.

  2400. And as they were

  2401. returning to come

  2402. back to the aircraft

  2403. carrier,

  2404. it was getting

  2405. dark.

  2406. And as they were

  2407. trying to find

  2408. the aircraft carrier

  2409. where they thought

  2410. it must be,

  2411. they started

  2412. radioing and

  2413. asking for a light

  2414. so they could land.

  2415. But they were

  2416. told that the

  2417. captain had

  2418. said that the

  2419. ship was to be

  2420. in blackout.

  2421. Because of the

  2422. number of

  2423. submarines in the

  2424. area,

  2425. they were afraid

  2426. to put on any

  2427. light because

  2428. the submarine

  2429. would spot them.

  2430. And again and

  2431. again they kept

  2432. radioing and saying

  2433. just give us a

  2434. light to land,

  2435. give us something

  2436. that we might

  2437. see where to

  2438. land.

  2439. And they had to

  2440. keep saying we

  2441. can't.

  2442. And eventually the

  2443. radio operator was

  2444. so broken hearted

  2445. by what he was

  2446. saying that he

  2447. switched off the

  2448. radio so that he

  2449. wouldn't hear the

  2450. pleading for a

  2451. light anymore.

  2452. And they all had

  2453. to ditch their

  2454. planes in the

  2455. ocean.

  2456. A sense of

  2457. abandonment from

  2458. their own people

  2459. that they couldn't

  2460. help in the midst

  2461. of the fear of

  2462. enemy submarines

  2463. around them.

  2464. They were

  2465. abandoned,

  2466. they were

  2467. helpless.

  2468. Well there was a

  2469. greater abandonment

  2470. than that.

  2471. And that's when we

  2472. look to the

  2473. cross.

  2474. When we think of

  2475. what Christ has

  2476. done for us,

  2477. the one who

  2478. later on in this

  2479. chapter has

  2480. described as

  2481. going outside

  2482. the camp

  2483. of giving

  2484. his blood.

  2485. That as we

  2486. look to the

  2487. cross we see

  2488. the greatest

  2489. sacrifice of

  2490. all.

  2491. The place

  2492. where there was

  2493. darkness,

  2494. where there was

  2495. abandonment,

  2496. where Jesus

  2497. cried those

  2498. awful words,

  2499. my God,

  2500. my God,

  2501. why have you

  2502. forsaken me?

  2503. Why have you

  2504. left me?

  2505. Well why?

  2506. Well the cross

  2507. was the place

  2508. of God's

  2509. fulfilling every

  2510. promise in

  2511. Christ.

  2512. That he had

  2513. to suffer.

  2514. That he had

  2515. to suffer as it

  2516. says outside

  2517. the camp.

  2518. That he had

  2519. to give that

  2520. sacrifice

  2521. that we

  2522. might live.

  2523. That we

  2524. might have

  2525. light.

  2526. That we

  2527. might have

  2528. hope to

  2529. walk in

  2530. his ways.

  2531. If you

  2532. feel

  2533. abandoned,

  2534. if you feel

  2535. at times you're

  2536. just groping in

  2537. the darkness,

  2538. think of

  2539. the cross

  2540. where Christ

  2541. died for

  2542. our sins.

  2543. Where darkness

  2544. overcame for

  2545. a time

  2546. that remember

  2547. the resurrection.

  2548. That glorious

  2549. day that he

  2550. has risen.

  2551. That he is

  2552. with us.

  2553. Never will

  2554. I leave you.

  2555. Never will

  2556. I forsake

  2557. you.

  2558. And that's

  2559. what we see

  2560. being hammered

  2561. home for us

  2562. here.

  2563. He has

  2564. suffered for

  2565. us outside

  2566. the camp

  2567. so we

  2568. might have

  2569. life through

  2570. him.

  2571. The Lord

  2572. is my

  2573. helper.

  2574. Can we

  2575. say that

  2576. tonight?

  2577. Well this

  2578. does call

  2579. for a

  2580. response.

  2581. The promise

  2582. is there

  2583. for us.

  2584. I will

  2585. never leave

  2586. you.

  2587. I will

  2588. never forsake

  2589. you.

  2590. But as

  2591. with all

  2592. of God's

  2593. promises,

  2594. it calls

  2595. for us

  2596. to respond.

  2597. And what

  2598. was the

  2599. response

  2600. that the

  2601. writer to

  2602. the Hebrews

  2603. was looking

  2604. for here?

  2605. Well if you

  2606. look at

  2607. verse 6

  2608. it says,

  2609. so we

  2610. can

  2611. confidently

  2612. say,

  2613. we can

  2614. say with

  2615. confidence,

  2616. the Lord

  2617. is my

  2618. helper.

  2619. I will

  2620. not fear

  2621. what can

  2622. man do

  2623. for me.

  2624. The call

  2625. of this

  2626. promise

  2627. is for us

  2628. as a

  2629. people

  2630. to have

  2631. confidence.

  2632. And as

  2633. you go

  2634. through

  2635. the book

  2636. of Hebrews

  2637. you see

  2638. it calls

  2639. people to

  2640. have

  2641. this

  2642. confidence.

  2643. This

  2644. confidence

  2645. to persevere,

  2646. this confidence

  2647. to worship,

  2648. to trust

  2649. God

  2650. no matter

  2651. what.

  2652. And just

  2653. when you

  2654. see the

  2655. word

  2656. confidence

  2657. in Hebrews

  2658. it gives

  2659. us confidence

  2660. in many

  2661. different ways.

  2662. Hebrews 3

    Hebrews 3:6

  2663. verse 6

  2664. gives us

  2665. confidence

  2666. in his

  2667. hope.

  2668. It says,

  2669. we are

  2670. his house,

  2671. his people,

  2672. if indeed

  2673. we hold

  2674. fast our

  2675. confidence

  2676. and our

  2677. boasting

  2678. and our

  2679. hope.

  2680. The hope

  2681. that there

  2682. is in

  2683. Christ,

  2684. the confidence

  2685. that brings.

  2686. There is

  2687. confidence

  2688. to persevere.

  2689. Again in

  2690. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3:14

  2691. chapter 3

  2692. verse 14,

  2693. for we have

  2694. come to

  2695. share in

  2696. Christ,

  2697. if indeed

  2698. we hold

  2699. our

  2700. original

  2701. confidence

  2702. firm

  2703. to the

  2704. end.

  2705. The

  2706. confidence

  2707. to persevere.

  2708. In

  2709. chapter 4

  2710. verse 16

  2711. it gives

  2712. us confidence

  2713. despite

  2714. our sin

  2715. where it

  2716. says,

  2717. let us

  2718. then with

  2719. confidence

  2720. draw near

  2721. to the

  2722. throne of

  2723. grace

  2724. that we

  2725. may receive

  2726. mercy

  2727. and find

  2728. grace to

  2729. help in

  2730. time of

  2731. need.

  2732. The

  2733. Lord

  2734. is with

  2735. us.

  2736. In

  2737. chapter 10

  2738. verse 19

  2739. we have

  2740. confidence

  2741. in his

  2742. finished

  2743. work.

  2744. Therefore

  2745. brothers,

  2746. since we

  2747. have

  2748. confidence

  2749. to enter

  2750. the holy

  2751. places

  2752. by the

  2753. blood

  2754. of

  2755. Jesus.

  2756. Again

  2757. it's

  2758. this

  2759. confidence.

  2760. It's

  2761. not in

  2762. ourselves.

  2763. It's

  2764. in the

  2765. blood

  2766. of

  2767. Christ.

  2768. And

  2769. this

  2770. confidence

  2771. is

  2772. despite

  2773. opposition.

  2774. in

  2775. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:35

  2776. 10

  2777. verse

  2778. 35

  2779. we've

  2780. seen

  2781. the

  2782. kind

  2783. of

  2784. opposition

  2785. that

  2786. they

  2787. face.

  2788. But

  2789. it

  2790. says

  2791. therefore

  2792. do

  2793. not

  2794. throw

  2795. away

  2796. your

  2797. confidence

  2798. which

  2799. has

  2800. a

  2801. great

  2802. reward.

  2803. So

  2804. the

  2805. word

  2806. confidence

  2807. keeps

  2808. coming up

  2809. as you're

  2810. going

  2811. through

  2812. Hebrews.

  2813. But

  2814. the

  2815. foundation

  2816. of it

  2817. is

  2818. all

  2819. at

  2820. this

  2821. last

  2822. point

  2823. in

  2824. chapter

  2825. 13.

  2826. It's

  2827. the

  2828. last

  2829. quotation

  2830. from

  2831. the

  2832. Old

  2833. Testament.

  2834. I

  2835. will

  2836. never

  2837. leave

  2838. you

  2839. nor

  2840. forsake

  2841. you.

  2842. So

  2843. we

  2844. can

  2845. confidently

  2846. say

  2847. the

  2848. Lord

  2849. is

  2850. my

  2851. helper.

  2852. I

  2853. will

  2854. not

  2855. fear.

  2856. What

  2857. can

  2858. man

  2859. do

  2860. to

  2861. me?

  2862. Do

  2863. you

  2864. have

  2865. that

  2866. confidence

  2867. tonight?

  2868. To

  2869. confidently

  2870. say

  2871. the

  2872. Lord

  2873. is

  2874. my

  2875. helper.

  2876. It's

  2877. the

  2878. confidence

  2879. that

  2880. comes

  2881. from

  2882. seeking

  2883. the

  2884. Lord

  2885. while

  2886. he

  2887. may

  2888. be

  2889. found

  2890. and

  2891. calling

  2892. upon

  2893. him

  2894. while

  2895. he

  2896. is

  2897. near.

  2898. In

  2899. knowing

  2900. the

  2901. pardon,

  2902. in

  2903. knowing

  2904. the

  2905. forgiveness

  2906. of

  2907. sin,

  2908. in

  2909. knowing

  2910. the

  2911. faith

  2912. that

  2913. that

  2914. gives

  2915. to

  2916. us,

  2917. that

  2918. is

  2919. where

  2920. that

  2921. confidence

  2922. comes.

  2923. And

  2924. it's

  2925. a

  2926. confidence

  2927. in

  2928. which

  2929. we

  2930. go

  2931. on.

  2932. The

  2933. Lord

  2934. doesn't

  2935. leave

  2936. us.

  2937. He

  2938. gives

  2939. us

  2940. the

  2941. promise

  2942. that

  2943. he

  2944. is

  2945. with

  2946. us

  2947. constantly.

  2948. Never

  2949. will

  2950. I

  2951. leave

  2952. you.

  2953. Never

  2954. will

  2955. I

  2956. forsake

  2957. you.

  2958. There

  2959. is

  2960. no

  2961. time

  2962. and

  2963. no

  2964. place

  2965. where

  2966. God

  2967. abandons

  2968. his

  2969. people.

  2970. Through

  2971. life,

  2972. through

  2973. death,

  2974. to

  2975. eternity,

  2976. he

  2977. is

  2978. with

  2979. us.

  2980. We

  2981. can

  2982. have

  2983. confidence

  2984. in

  2985. that

  2986. because

  2987. it's

  2988. not

  2989. of

  2990. ourselves.

  2991. it's

  2992. of

  2993. him.

  2994. It's

  2995. faith

  2996. in

  2997. Christ

  2998. as

  2999. our

  3000. Lord,

  3001. as

  3002. our

  3003. King,

  3004. that

  3005. we

  3006. can

  3007. stand

  3008. on

  3009. his

  3010. promises

  3011. and

  3012. know

  3013. his

  3014. presence

  3015. always

  3016. with

  3017. us

  3018. because

  3019. he

  3020. will

  3021. never

  3022. leave

  3023. us

  3024. or

  3025. forsake

  3026. us.

  3027. So

  3028. let

  3029. us

  3030. confidently

  3031. say

  3032. the

  3033. Lord

  3034. is

  3035. my

  3036. helper.

  3037. Let

  3038. us

  3039. pray.

  3040. Our

  3041. Father

  3042. in

  3043. heaven,

  3044. may

  3045. we

  3046. know

  3047. the

  3048. blessing

  3049. of

  3050. your

  3051. word

  3052. to

  3053. us

  3054. this

  3055. night.

  3056. May

  3057. we

  3058. know

  3059. the

  3060. confidence

  3061. it

  3062. brings

  3063. to

  3064. us

  3065. that

  3066. we

  3067. are

  3068. not

  3069. abandoned,

  3070. that

  3071. we

  3072. are

  3073. not

  3074. alone,

  3075. that

  3076. you

  3077. have

  3078. said

  3079. that

  3080. you

  3081. will

  3082. never

  3083. leave

  3084. us

  3085. or

  3086. forsake

  3087. us

  3088. and

  3089. help

  3090. us

  3091. to

  3092. have

  3093. the

  3094. confidence

  3095. to

  3096. say

  3097. the

  3098. Lord

  3099. is

  3100. my

  3101. helper,

  3102. that

  3103. we

  3104. would

  3105. know

  3106. that

  3107. on a

  3108. daily

  3109. basis,

  3110. that

  3111. we

  3112. would

  3113. know

  3114. the

  3115. assurance

  3116. and

  3117. the

  3118. comfort

  3119. and

  3120. the

  3121. grace

  3122. that

  3123. that

  3124. gives

  3125. to

  3126. us,

  3127. a

  3128. grace

  3129. that

  3130. is

  3131. always

  3132. sufficient

  3133. for

  3134. our

  3135. every

  3136. need.

  3137. So

  3138. hear

  3139. our

  3140. prayers

  3141. Lord

  3142. and

  3143. continue

  3144. with

  3145. us.

  3146. That's

  3147. all we

  3148. ask.

  3149. We

  3150. ask

  3151. in

  3152. Jesus'

  3153. name.

  3154. Amen.

  3155. We're

  3156. going to

  3157. conclude

  3158. by singing

  3159. in Psalm

  3160. 71

  3161. in the

  3162. Scottish

  3163. Psalter

  3164. verse

  3165. 16

  3166. to

  3167. verse

  3168. 18.

  3169. The

  3170. tune is

  3171. Weatherby,

  3172. Psalm 71,

  3173. page 311

  3174. of the

  3175. psalm

  3176. books.

  3177. And again,

  3178. these verses

  3179. remind us

  3180. of God's

  3181. wonderful

  3182. presence

  3183. with us

  3184. and the

  3185. confidence

  3186. that that

  3187. gives.

  3188. I will

  3189. constantly

  3190. go on

  3191. in strength

  3192. of God

  3193. the Lord

  3194. and thine

  3195. own righteousness

  3196. even thine

  3197. alone I

  3198. will record.

  3199. Verse

  3200. 18.

  3201. And now

  3202. Lord

  3203. leave me

  3204. not when

  3205. I,

  3206. old

  3207. and

  3208. gray

  3209. headed

  3210. grow

  3211. till

  3212. to this

  3213. age

  3214. thy

  3215. strength

  3216. and

  3217. power

  3218. to all

  3219. to come

  3220. I

  3221. show.

  3222. We'll

  3223. sing these

  3224. three stanzas

  3225. to God's

  3226. praise.

  3227. Amen.

  3228. And I

  3229. will

  3230. constantly

  3231. go on

  3232. in strength

  3233. of God

  3234. the Lord

  3235. and thine

  3236. own righteousness

  3237. even thine

  3238. how old

  3239. I will

  3240. record.

  3241. What if

  3242. love

  3243. teaching

  3244. me?

  3245. Have

  3246. a

  3247. love

  3248. to

  3249. who

  3250. asked

  3251. me

  3252. what

  3253. a

  3254. love

3255. The Lord has gone, and I'll mourn thee, may not when I hold and grant it through,

3256. till to this age thy strength and power do all to come my show.

3257. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my left. We'll just close with a benediction.

3258. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore. Amen.

  3259. Amen.
