  1. Then we're going to begin our worship and we're singing firstly in Psalm 125, Psalm 125 in the

  2. Scottish Psalter, page 419. Today we're singing Psalm 125, 126, 127 and 128, just as a series of

  3. psalms. So 125, they in the Lord that firmly trust shall be like Zion Hill, which at no time can be

  4. removed but standeth ever still. And so on to the end of the psalm. We stand to sing if you're able to stand.

  5. Time can be removed but standeth ever still. As round about Jerusalem, the merchants stand all way.

  6. The Lord is full, the compass so, from henceforth and foray.

  7. For ill men's rod upon the road, all just men shall not lie.

  8. Lest righteous men set forth their hands unto iniquity.

  9. Do thou do all those that be good, thy goodness for him far.

  10. And do thou good to those that are upright within their heart.

  11. God shall lead for the world, even if they are iniquity.

  12. But as for such as turn aside, after their crooked way, God shall lead for the wicked men.

  13. Let's join together now in prayer, a prayer especially for the children and for the young folks just now.

  14. Lord, our God, we thank you on this lovely bright day that we come before you as a people who worship you and to confess you as our God.

  15. And we thank you today that this is an opportunity, Lord, for us to worship you and in the worship find further fellowship with you and knowledge of you.

  16. We thank you today that you give us these opportunities to draw aside from our normal course of activity in the world and to come together on the Lord's day to worship the Lord, to be together as his people and to share in that fellowship with him and with each other.

  17. Bless our children, we pray today.

  18. Lord, be with them during these times and grant to them again that they may increase in the knowledge of your own will and of your word and that they may find by your grace that they apply these things to their lives each and every day.

  19. Remember them, we pray, from the youngest in creche through to those in Bible school, Bible class, we pray that your blessing will be with them.

  20. And we ask that they will know day by day of the power of your truth working in their lives.

  21. And so receive our thanks, we pray.

  22. Continue to guide us and bless us and pardon our many sins for Jesus' sake.

  23. Amen.

  24. In Psalm 142, it's just for the children and young folks, Psalm 142,

  25. we find David in a cave.

  26. He was being chased by his enemies.

  27. He found refuge in a cave.

  28. And this was a psalm that he wrote while in the cave or thought about in the cave.

  29. It's really a prayer that he made from the cave to God.

  30. And in verse 3, he says,

  31. When my spirit faints within me, you know my way.

  32. Now there's a wonderful verse for memory for those in the Sunday school and for children always looking for verses to learn.

  33. Here's one verse you could learn.

  34. It's quite short, but it's also important.

  35. It tells us about how God looks after his people in all their situations.

  36. Even though David was in danger and hiding from his enemies, he said to God,

  37. When my spirit faints within me, in other words, when I'm really afraid, you know my way.

  38. God's eye is upon him.

  39. God knows his way.

  40. For my recent birthday, the family got together and actually got a wonderful gift for me.

  41. It's a bird feeder.

  42. And you might say, what's wonderful about a bird feeder?

  43. A bird feeder is available from many sources.

  44. But this bird feeder is good because it has a hidden camera in it.

  45. And it takes videos.

  46. As soon as a bird lands on the tray, it triggers the camera.

  47. The camera takes a video as long as that bird is moving.

  48. The movement begins the camera.

  49. When the movement stops, the camera stops.

  50. And it records it onto a little card inside the camera.

  51. And it's been absolutely wonderful to see close up these birds who have no idea they're being filmed or videoed.

  52. But you can see all the birds that land there.

  53. So far, we've seen chaffinches.

  54. Even a turtle dove the other day or a collared dove actually landed on there.

  55. There's been green finch.

  56. There's been sparrows.

  57. Different kinds of birds over the course of these few weeks.

  58. And it reminded me about some things that are important for us in our spiritual understanding as well.

  59. Such as the verse I've just read.

  60. Here was David saying in the cave.

  61. Nobody was seeing him there.

  62. He was safe from his enemies.

  63. He was hiding, at least, from his enemies.

  64. And yet he says,

  65. Whatever our circumstances are like, however difficult your lives may be,

  66. whatever challenges you're facing as children or young people,

  67. be thankful that God actually knows exactly where you are, exactly what you're doing.

  68. He's seeing you all the time.

  69. You might say that although he sees you all the time,

  70. there are special occasions, especially when we have a need of really being helped.

  71. That is, I is special.

  72. Just like the camera is triggered by the movement of the birds,

  73. so God's heart is moved when he finds us crying out to him

  74. out of circumstances that are challenging and difficult.

  75. You know, he said, my way.

  76. Now, there's another side to that as well.

  77. Well, just as that camera picks up the movement of the bird without them knowing about it,

  78. so God is watching our lives all the time.

  79. And as well as being really comforting for us

  80. to know that God is looking over us when we have difficulties in our lives,

  81. it's also a challenge for us to know that God is looking in on our lives

  82. at every time.

  83. Whatever we're doing, God sees it.

  84. And that should be a means of keeping us from doing things which are wrong,

  85. keeping us from even thinking wrong thoughts.

  86. God sees into our minds.

  87. And as he sees into our minds, the Bible reminds us that he reads our minds.

  88. He knows our thoughts.

  89. So I hope today that that little bird table and its camera

  90. are a symbol for you or a picture for you

  91. of something very, very comforting, very assuring,

  92. that God watches over us when we place our trust in him,

  93. but also that God looks in on our lives

  94. just to actually see what we're doing

  95. from day to day, from moment to moment,

  96. every time he's looking in on us.

  97. So there's a very important verse for us to remember.

  98. When my spirit faints within me, you know my way.

  99. So practice that through the day to day.

  100. And as you do so, let that word, let that verse sink into your mind

  101. and use it in your life so that when you have a difficulty,

  102. you'll turn to God and say,

  103. Lord, I'm thankful that you know my way,

  104. that you know my circumstances.

  105. So now let's say the Lord's Prayer once again together.

  106. Our Father, which art in heaven,

  107. hallowed be thy name.

  108. Thy kingdom come.

  109. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  110. Give us this day our daily bread.

  111. And forgive us our debts,

  112. as we forgive our debtors.

  113. And lead us not into temptation,

  114. but deliver us from evil.

  115. For thine is the kingdom

  116. and the power and the glory forever.

  117. Amen.

  118. Now we're going to sing again.

  119. This time we're singing Psalm 126.

  120. Again, it's on page 419.

  121. When Zion's bondage God turned back,

  122. as men had dreamed were we,

  123. then filled with laughter was our mouth,

  124. our tongue with melody.

  125. And you can see in this psalm

  126. that even people who don't follow the Lord

  127. can actually know and see

  128. when the Lord has blessed his people.

  129. It says there in verse 3,

  130. among the heathen,

  131. they said the Lord great things

  132. for them has wrought.

  133. In other words, the world,

  134. people who watch us all the time,

  135. can see when God has blessed our lives

  136. and we tell them

  137. about how God has been good to us.

  138. So Psalm 126,

  139. When Zion's bondage God turned back.

  140. When Zion's bondage God turned back,

  141. as men that dreamed were we,

  142. then filled with laughter was our mouth,

  143. our tongue with melody.

  144. They among the heathen said the Lord,

  145. great things for them hath brought.

  146. The Lord hath done great things for us,

  147. when joy to us is brought.

  148. As streams of water in the sun,

  149. our bondage Lord recall,

  150. whose soul in tears and reeping time,

  151. of joy in joy they shall.

  152. that man who bare in precious seed,

  153. in going forth the poor,

  154. he does bring him back his sheep,

  155. rejoice in shall return.

  156. Our reading of God's Word this morning

  157. is from 2 Samuel,

  158. the second book of Samuel,

  159. and chapter 6.

  160. And we're reading from the beginning.

  161. That's the second book of Samuel,

  162. and chapter 6,

  163. it's around about page 310 or so,

  164. in your church Bibles,

  165. if you're using these.

  166. So we'll read verses 1 to 19.

  167. David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel,

  168. 30,000,

  169. and David arose and went with all the people

  170. who were with him from Baljudea

  171. to bring up from there the ark of God,

  172. which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts,

  173. who sits enthroned on the cherubim.

  174. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart

  175. and brought it out of the house of Abinadab,

  176. which was on the hill.

  177. And Uzzah and Ahio,

  178. the sons of Abinadab,

  179. were driving the new cart

  180. with the ark of God.

  181. And Ahio went before the ark.

  182. And David and all the house of Israel

  183. were making merry before the Lord

  184. with songs and lyres and harps

  185. and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

  186. When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon,

  187. Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God

  188. and took hold of it,

  189. for the oxen stumbled.

  190. And the anger of the Lord

  191. was kindled against Uzzah,

  192. and God struck him down there

  193. because of his error,

  194. and he died there beside the ark of God.

  195. And David was angry

  196. because the Lord had burst forth against Uzzah,

  197. and that place is called Perez Uzzah

  198. to this day.

  199. And David was afraid of the Lord that day

  200. and said,

  201. How can the ark of the Lord come to me?

  202. So David was not willing

  203. to take the ark of the Lord

  204. into the city of David,

  205. but David took it aside

  206. to the house of Obadedum the Gittite.

  207. And the ark of the Lord remained

  208. in the house of Obadedum the Gittite

  209. for three months.

  210. And the Lord blessed Obadedum

  211. and all his household.

  212. And it was told King David,

  213. The Lord has blessed the household

  214. of Obadedum,

  215. and all that belongs to him

  216. because of the ark of God.

  217. So David went and brought up

  218. the ark of God

  219. from the house of Obadedum

  220. to the city of David

  221. with rejoicing.

  222. And when those who bore

  223. the ark of the Lord

  224. had gone six steps,

  225. he sacrificed an oxen

  226. and a fattened animal.

  227. And David danced before the Lord

  228. with all his might.

  229. And David was wearing

  230. a linen ephod.

  231. So David and all the house of Israel

  232. brought up the ark of the Lord

  233. with shouting

  234. and with the sound of the horn.

  235. As the ark of the Lord

  236. came into the city of David,

  237. Michal, the daughter of Saul,

  238. looked out of the window

  239. and saw King David

  240. leaping and dancing

  241. before the Lord.

  242. And she despised him in her heart.

  243. And they brought in

  244. the ark of the Lord

  245. and set it in his place,

  246. inside the tent

  247. that David had pitched for it.

  248. And David offered

  249. burnt offerings

  250. and peace offerings

  251. before the Lord.

  252. And when David had finished

  253. offering the burnt offerings

  254. and the peace offerings,

  255. he blessed the people

  256. in the name of the Lord of hosts

  257. and distributed among

  258. all the people

  259. the whole multitude of Israel,

  260. both men and women,

  261. a cake of bread,

  262. a portion of meat,

  263. and a cake of raisins

  264. to each one.

  265. Then all the people departed,

  266. each to his own house.

  267. May God again follow

  268. with his blessing

  269. of reading that portion

  270. of his word.

  271. Let's again engage in prayer.

  272. We do give thanks,

  273. O Lord, again for your word

  274. and for every portion of it,

  275. for we recognize

  276. your own hand

  277. as the one who has authored

  278. and produced this word for us

  279. and caused it

  280. to be put into writing

  281. in a language

  282. that we ourselves

  283. can understand.

  284. We thank you today, Lord,

  285. for the value

  286. that's placed upon your word

  287. by your people now

  288. and having been the same

  289. throughout all generations.

  290. We thank you for the liberty

  291. that we have

  292. to read your word in peace,

  293. the liberty we have

  294. to hear it explained,

  295. to find it for ourselves,

  296. a word that speaks to us

  297. of our own lives personally

  298. and of the world

  299. in which we live.

  300. It speaks to us

  301. of things past in history

  302. and things to come

  303. in your prophecy.

  304. We bless you, O Lord,

  305. that every aspect of your word

  306. remains the truth,

  307. however much things may change

  308. from one generation to another.

  309. We bless you

  310. for your unchanging word today.

  311. We thank you

  312. for its relevance

  313. to our own situation today.

  314. We bless you

  315. that it never loses

  316. its relevance.

  317. And we thank you, Lord,

  318. that however many

  319. may turn aside from it

  320. or cast it aside,

  321. we pray, O Lord,

  322. for grace to retain your word

  323. with relish

  324. and with love in our hearts.

  325. That we might be like the psalmist

  326. to hid your word in his heart,

  327. to hide it not only

  328. in a way that treasured it there,

  329. but also so that it might

  330. be seen through

  331. in the life that he lived

  332. in accordance with your word.

  333. We ask, Lord,

  334. that you would give us

  335. an increased burden

  336. for this in our own lives.

  337. And for we need a world

  338. in which your people

  339. are shown to be

  340. a people of your word,

  341. a people in which

  342. your word shines out,

  343. and a people who come

  344. to speak of that word

  345. approvingly to the generation

  346. they belong to.

  347. We ask, Lord,

  348. as a people,

  349. as a congregation,

  350. that we may indeed be,

  351. as Paul would say

  352. to the Philippians,

  353. holding forth

  354. the word of life,

  355. so that we may hold it forth

  356. for our own use

  357. and for the knowledge

  358. of those around us.

  359. Lord, help us never

  360. to be ashamed of your word.

  361. Help us never to be

  362. in a frame of mind

  363. that would doubt

  364. the veracity,

  365. the truthfulness,

  366. or the authority

  367. of your word.

  368. Help us always

  369. to be sure

  370. that your word

  371. is superior

  372. to every human ideology,

  373. every human source

  374. of knowledge

  375. that we have.

  376. We thank you, Lord,

  377. for all that we come

  378. to learn during

  379. the course of our years,

  380. and yet we pray

  381. that your word

  382. may continue

  383. to be fundamental

  384. and foundational

  385. to our thoughts

  386. and our conclusions

  387. and our way of life.

  388. And so,

  389. blessed to us,

  390. we pray today,

  391. as we gather once again

  392. here to hear

  393. what the Lord God

  394. would say to us.

  395. Bless us,

  396. we pray,

  397. that we may speak

  398. in your name

  399. and hear in your name,

  400. that we may come together

  401. to realize,

  402. O Lord,

  403. that this itself

  404. is such an important occasion

  405. because it is so intimately

  406. connected to eternity

  407. and to our meeting

  408. with you at last.

  409. And we pray

  410. that your word

  411. may continue

  412. to prepare us

  413. for that great eventuality,

  414. for we know

  415. that after we leave

  416. this world,

  417. we will not have

  418. the opportunity

  419. of having your word

  420. declared to us

  421. or preached to us

  422. or read for ourselves.

  423. We thank you

  424. for the opportunities

  425. we have through life

  426. to know you in word

  427. and in providence.

  428. Lord,

  429. we pray that you,

  430. by your Holy Spirit,

  431. enable us to profit

  432. from those great opportunities

  433. we have.

  434. Bless us,

  435. we pray,

  436. in the world

  437. in which we are set.

  438. Bless us in our life

  439. as a congregation.

  440. We ask,

  441. O Lord,

  442. that you would be pleased

  443. to once again

  444. continue to provide for us.

  445. Provide for us,

  446. we pray,

  447. spiritually,

  448. morally,

  449. financially.

  450. Provide for us,

  451. Lord,

  452. encouragement

  453. that would strengthen us

  454. from day to day.

  455. Provide for us

  456. in the teaching

  457. of our children.

  458. We ask,

  459. Lord,

  460. when the Sunday School

  461. requires more resources

  462. in terms of those

  463. who would teach

  464. our young people,

  465. Lord,

  466. we ask that you would

  467. lay this upon

  468. the hearts of those

  469. you would want to come

  470. and help out

  471. with the teaching

  472. of the children.

  473. And we ask,

  474. Lord,

  475. that in the search

  476. for suitable teachers

  477. for the Sunday School,

  478. you would help those

  479. who presently serve,

  480. grant to them,

  481. Lord,

  482. that they may know

  483. that we value them

  484. and that they are

  485. so precious to us

  486. as they give off

  487. their time so readily

  488. to this important work.

  489. And we ask

  490. that those who are taught

  491. will come themselves

  492. one day

  493. to take the place

  494. of teachers,

  495. Lord,

  496. over young people

  497. yet to be born.

  498. And we pray

  499. that you would

  500. continue to provide

  501. for us as a people

  502. so that through the gospel,

  503. not only may

  504. our own lives flourish,

  505. but that of our community

  506. as well

  507. as we come under

  508. your blessing

  509. as we pray.

  510. And so we ask

  511. your blessing now

  512. for all of our number

  513. today who are

  514. in specific needs.

  515. We think of those

  516. who are ill

  517. and ask that you

  518. would bless them,

  519. some in hospitals,

  520. some in care homes,

  521. some in their own homes.

  522. We pray your blessing

  523. upon them,

  524. lay your good hand

  525. upon them

  526. for their healing

  527. if it please you.

  528. And grant,

  529. Lord,

  530. we pray to those

  531. too who have

  532. mental health issues

  533. and struggle at times

  534. through the course of life.

  535. Be pleased,

  536. Lord,

  537. we pray to help them.

  538. We ask for any,

  539. O Lord,

  540. today who have

  541. troubles with addictions

  542. of various kinds.

  543. We ask that you

  544. bless the efforts

  545. made to help them.

  546. And we pray

  547. that you would

  548. release them,

  549. Lord,

  550. from such addiction

  551. if it please you.

  552. And we ask

  553. that the help

  554. they receive

  555. may truly be

  556. of benefit to them.

  557. and we ask

  558. that you would

  559. bless all who help

  560. in that way.

  561. We pray that you

  562. would bless

  563. our health centers,

  564. bless our hospital

  565. and our hospice

  566. and our care homes.

  567. Lord,

  568. we ask that you

  569. would be pleased

  570. to continue

  571. to bless us

  572. and to provide

  573. resources for us

  574. in regard to

  575. this important aspect

  576. of our life

  577. in this community.

  578. Remember those

  579. who are in authority

  580. over us today.

  581. Bless them here

  582. locally in the Corlea.

  583. Bless them also

  584. nationally

  585. in Edinburgh

  586. and in London

  587. and Westminster.

  588. Gracious Lord,

  589. we know from

  590. your providence

  591. that we live

  592. in tumultuous times,

  593. times when we

  594. can look back

  595. upon a great shift

  596. of thinking,

  597. a great shift

  598. in those things

  599. that are regarded

  600. as priorities

  601. compared to past ages.

  602. Lord,

  603. we pray that

  604. you would provide

  605. for us.

  606. And we pray

  607. when there is

  608. so much uncertainty

  609. and indeed

  610. at times turmoil

  611. amongst those

  612. who rule over us.

  613. We pray

  614. that you would

  615. bring stability

  616. through the gospel,

  617. that you would

  618. turn people

  619. to yourself,

  620. that those who

  621. exercise government

  622. over us

  623. and high office

  624. in our land,

  625. O Lord,

  626. our God,

  627. that they may come

  628. to be guided

  629. by your truth

  630. and set in your ways

  631. and come to commend

  632. you to the people

  633. over whom

  634. you have set them.

  635. Graciously,

  636. Lord,

  637. hear us

  638. as we pray

  639. for them.

  640. We know

  641. that it is

  642. our privilege

  643. as well as

  644. the instruction

  645. of your word

  646. to pray for those

  647. who are in authority

  648. over us.

  649. Lord,

  650. we do so

  651. willingly today.

  652. We ask

  653. your blessing

  654. to be with the world

  655. in which we live.

  656. We extend our prayers

  657. today,

  658. Lord,

  659. to this world

  660. and to its many,

  661. many troubles.

  662. We pray

  663. for places

  664. where there is

  665. today war

  666. and the threat

  667. of terror,

  668. loss of life,

  669. different places

  670. in the world

  671. where we find

  672. this constantly

  673. before us

  674. in your news reports.

  675. Lord,

  676. we pray

  677. that all the efforts

  678. made for peace

  679. might truly

  680. prove successful,

  681. but we pray

  682. especially

  683. for the peace

  684. that only you

  685. can create,

  686. the peace of Christ,

  687. the peace that

  688. comes through the gospel.

  689. Lord,

  690. we pray

  691. that you bless

  692. every evangelistic

  693. endeavor,

  694. even in these

  695. very difficult

  696. circumstances

  697. in these places

  698. in the world.

  699. Bless your word

  700. there too,

  701. we pray,

  702. and bless your

  703. believing people

  704. as they continue

  705. and struggle

  706. against so many

  707. different types

  708. of adversity

  709. to hold true

  710. to your word

  711. and, Lord,

  712. to know your blessing,

  713. keeping them

  714. and guiding them

  715. and blessing them.

  716. And so we pray

  717. now that your blessing

  718. will continue

  719. with us here.

  720. Hear us in our prayer

  721. and cleanse us

  722. from our sin.

  723. For Jesus' sake.

  724. Amen.

  725. We'll sing once more

  726. to God's praise

  727. this time,

  728. Psalm 127,

  729. before we turn

  730. to a verse or two

  731. in 2 Samuel

  732. where we read.

  733. Psalm 127,

  734. page 171,

  735. and sing the whole

  736. of that psalm again

  737. from verse 1.

  738. Unless the Lord

  739. builds up the house,

  740. its builders toil

  741. in vain.

  742. Unless he keeps

  743. the city safe,

  744. they vainly watch,

  745. maintain.

  746. in vain you rise

  747. before the dawn

  748. and late hours

  749. vainly keep,

  750. that you may toil

  751. for food to eat.

  752. He gives his loved ones

  753. sleep.

  754. Psalm 127,

  755. Unless the Lord

  756. builds up the house.

  757. unless the Lord

  758. builds up the house,

  759. its builders toil

  760. in vain,

  761. unless he keeps

  762. the city safe,

  763. the city safe,

  764. they vainly watch,

  765. maintain.

  766. In vain you rise

  767. before the dawn

  768. and late hours

  769. and late hours

  770. vainly keep,

  771. that you may toil

  772. for food to eat.

  773. He gives his loved ones

  774. sleep.

  775. Sons are a precious

  776. heritage,

  777. a blessing from the Lord.

  778. The children that are born

  779. to us

  780. are truly his reward.

  781. like arrows in a warrior's hand,

  782. our children of one's youth,

  783. the man who's quivered

  784. full of them

  785. is blessed by God in truth.

  786. Such men will not be poor to shame,

  787. that will not be their fate,

  788. when they condemn

  789. against their foes,

  790. who face them in the gate.

  791. Well, please turn with me now

  792. to 2 Samuel chapter 6.

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  793. Reading again at verse 11,

  794. 2 Samuel 6 at verse 11.

  795. And the ark of the Lord

  796. remained in the house

  797. of Obadedam the Gittite

  798. for three months.

  799. And the Lord blessed Obadedam

  800. and all his household.

  801. And it was told King David,

  802. the Lord has blessed

  803. the household of Obadedam

  804. and all that belongs to him

  805. because of the ark of God.

  806. I want to take these two verses

  807. under the heading today

  808. of a blessed household.

  809. We've seen a massive shift

  810. in Western civilization

  811. over many years now, sadly,

  812. in terms of what are set out

  813. as principles and values

  814. that people hold to in their society.

  815. And that massive shift

  816. has meant that

  817. as the Bible has been rejected

  818. increasingly,

  819. so what we call

  820. moral absolutes,

  821. in other words,

  822. absolute truth,

  823. the truth of God

  824. has set out for us

  825. in the Bible

  826. as that has been discarded

  827. increasingly or set aside,

  828. so other things have followed

  829. where throughout society

  830. you can see a great shift

  831. in people's thinking

  832. as to what is important,

  833. what should be foundational

  834. for individual life,

  835. for communal life,

  836. for national life, indeed.

  837. The more the Bible

  838. has been set aside

  839. and replaced

  840. with human ideologies

  841. and other ideologies

  842. of different kinds,

  843. so the more we've seen

  844. that massive shift in value

  845. in terms of principles

  846. and what is important

  847. for our way of life.

  848. And that's had

  849. a drastic effect,

  850. that redefinition

  851. of such things

  852. as truth itself.

  853. Ask anybody

  854. in the street today

  855. what they think truth is,

  856. and you're very seldom

  857. going to get them saying,

  858. well, truth is

  859. especially

  860. what God has set out

  861. for us

  862. in Holy Scripture.

  863. Truth is,

  864. in many ways,

  865. people's thinking

  866. of truth is

  867. truth is what you make of it.

  868. Truth is what works for you.

  869. Truth is what is

  870. really maybe

  871. the view of a majority

  872. as to what ought to be

  873. the principles

  874. and values of society.

  875. And it's not just that.

  876. It's been

  877. a time of redefining

  878. not just truth,

  879. but redefining

  880. other things

  881. follow on from that,

  882. redefining marriage,

  883. for example,

  884. redefining gender,

  885. and the whole concept

  886. of what a family is

  887. is part of that great shift

  888. part of that great change,

  889. part of that thinking.

  890. And that's what I want

  891. to focus on today,

  892. how you get from

  893. these verses

  894. things which are important

  895. in our thinking

  896. of what is a family,

  897. what is a family for,

  898. what are the benefits

  899. of family life,

  900. what should be

  901. the starting point

  902. for family life,

  903. and of course

  904. that has to be Scripture.

  905. That's why we're going

  906. to Scripture,

  907. where we're going

  908. to these verses today.

  909. What does God say

  910. about the family,

  911. what constitutes

  912. a family,

  913. and what other things

  914. are related to

  915. the concept of a family

  916. as far as the Bible

  917. is concerned?

  918. So we're looking at that

  919. under the heading

  920. of a blessed household,

  921. because that's what

  922. this household became

  923. and was due to the ark,

  924. as David was told

  925. here in verse 12,

  926. the Lord has blessed

  927. the household of Obidadum,

  928. and all that belongs to him,

  929. because of the ark of God.

  930. I will look more

  931. into what that means,

  932. the ark of God,

  933. what that signified,

  934. and why it's especially

  935. related to the blessing

  936. of Obidadum's house.

  937. First of all,

  938. I want to look at this word

  939. household itself.

  940. A blessed household.

  941. There isn't any single word

  942. in the Old Testament

  943. for family,

  944. and not as the equivalent

  945. at least of the word family

  946. as we use it.

  947. The nearest thing to it

  948. is this word household.

  949. You find that often,

  950. of course,

  951. in the Old Testament,

  952. also in the New Testament.

  953. The word household

  954. encapsulates what the Bible

  955. means by family

  956. and by family life.

  957. And it means,

  958. when you use the word household,

  959. and you find it this way

  960. in the Bible,

  961. it actually means

  962. all who live

  963. in one home

  964. or under one roof.

  965. And of course,

  966. in those days,

  967. and even to this day,

  968. it means more than just

  969. a father and mother

  970. and children.

  971. It also means

  972. servants,

  973. relatives.

  974. In the Old Testament days,

  975. there were

  976. especially well-off families

  977. like Abraham's family,

  978. for example.

  979. He had a steward,

  980. somebody who looked

  981. after the household,

  982. who was charged

  983. with managing

  984. the household.

  985. And they became

  986. part of the household.

  987. And also,

  988. you had other servants

  989. or slaves

  990. in the household as well.

  991. So,

  992. all that came under

  993. that one roof

  994. are regarded as

  995. the household.

  996. They are the family

  997. in the extended sense,

  998. you might say.

  999. And that carries

  1000. into the New Testament

  1001. as well.

  1002. You remember,

  1003. perhaps,

  1004. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1005. sorry,

  1006. Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  1007. and verse 2,

  1008. the household there

  1009. of Cornelius.

  1010. There was a man

  1011. in Caesarea,

  1012. a centurion,

  1013. a devout man

  1014. who feared God

  1015. with all his household.

  1016. And it describes

  1017. later on

  1018. how that household

  1019. was brought together

  1020. to hear the preaching

  1021. of God's Word

  1022. from Peter

  1023. and how that household

  1024. comprised not just

  1025. Cornelius

  1026. and his immediate family

  1027. but his servants

  1028. and all those

  1029. who comprised

  1030. that group of people

  1031. known as his household.

  1032. So,

  1033. a household

  1034. is somebody,

  1035. is everybody really

1036. living under the one roof,

  1037. the immediate family,

  1038. and those others

  1039. in connection

  1040. with that family.

  1041. That's what you say

  1042. is the meaning

  1043. of household

  1044. in the Old Testament.

  1045. Now,

1046. I'm not going to go into this

1047. in terms of applying it

  1048. to the church,

  1049. but you realize that,

  1050. you know yourselves,

  1051. that the description,

  1052. the household of God

  1053. is actually used

  1054. for the church.

  1055. The household

  1056. of God.

  1057. In other words,

1058. it is the dwelling place

  1059. of God,

1060. but in that dwelling place,

  1061. the church is

  1062. the home,

  1063. if you like,

  1064. of God

  1065. where all his people

  1066. also live together

  1067. or are gathered.

  1068. That, of course,

  1069. is a spiritual meaning

  1070. of household.

  1071. But the household,

  1072. literally,

  1073. is like Obadadum here.

  1074. The household

  1075. of Obadadum

  1076. was himself,

  1077. his immediate family,

  1078. servants,

  1079. all others

  1080. who lived

  1081. under that roof.

  1082. And secondly,

1083. let's think of that household

  1084. as the basic unit

  1085. in human society.

  1086. The basic unit

  1087. in human society.

  1088. Around the household

  1089. of Obadadum

  1090. were other households.

  1091. And together,

  1092. all of these households

  1093. made up that community

  1094. of which the household

  1095. of Obadadum

  1096. was a part.

  1097. And every household,

  1098. as it forms part

  1099. of a community,

  1100. that household

  1101. is itself

  1102. a basic unit

  1103. of that wider structure.

1104. And you can apply that,

  1105. really,

  1106. to the whole

  1107. of human society.

  1108. Now,

1109. let me just take you back

  1110. to Genesis,

1111. to the beginning of things,

  1112. to the creation

  1113. of human households,

  1114. beginning with the creation

  1115. of marriage.

  1116. Genesis 2

  1117. and from verse 18.

1118. Then the Lord God said,

  1119. It is not good

  1120. that the man

  1121. should be alone.

  1122. That was Adam.

  1123. I will make a helper

1124. fit or suitable for him.

1125. So out of the ground,

  1126. the Lord God formed

1127. every beast of the field,

1128. every bird of the heavens,

1129. brought them to the man

1130. to see what he would call them.

  1131. And you read down

  1132. through there

  1133. until he discovered

  1134. or Adam proclaimed

  1135. there was nobody

  1136. like himself.

  1137. Until he actually found

  1138. this woman

  1139. that God had created.

1140. He took one of his ribs,

  1141. closed up its place

  1142. with flesh.

1143. He made into a woman.

1144. He brought her to the man

  1145. and the man said,

1146. This at last is bone

  1147. of my bones

1148. and flesh of my flesh.

1149. She shall be called woman

  1150. because she was taken

  1151. out of man.

  1152. Therefore,

  1153. see the next thing,

  1154. therefore,

  1155. a man shall leave

  1156. his father

  1157. and his mother

  1158. and hold fast

  1159. to his wife

  1160. and they shall become

  1161. one flesh.

  1162. What's happening there?

  1163. Well,

  1164. it says there's a man

  1165. leaving his father

  1166. and mother.

  1167. There is the household

  1168. he belongs to

1169. and in order to have

  1170. a marriage

1171. and to cleave to his wife,

  1172. he leaves that household

  1173. he belonged to

1174. and he sets up another one.

  1175. Another household

  1176. beginning with the marriage

  1177. of himself

  1178. and his wife.

  1179. And then,

  1180. of course,

  1181. as you go through

  1182. the book of Genesis,

  1183. you'll find children

  1184. born to that couple

  1185. and therefore becomes

  1186. a household

1187. in the sense of having

  1188. husband,

  1189. wife,

  1190. children

  1191. and eventually

  1192. servants as well.

  1193. So,

  1194. the ideal

  1195. in a family

  1196. is father,

  1197. mother,

  1198. children.

  1199. That is,

  1200. you might say,

  1201. the nuclear family.

  1202. The nucleus

  1203. of the wider household

  1204. is in the marriage

  1205. relationship

  1206. and the children

  1207. that are born

  1208. to them

  1209. in that marriage.

  1210. Ideal is the father,

  1211. the mother,

  1212. the children

  1213. and others then

1214. are added on to that

  1215. household.

  1216. Now,

  1217. you have blameless,

  1218. I'm calling it

  1219. blameless exceptions

  1220. and the Bible

  1221. takes account

  1222. of these

  1223. and these blameless

  1224. exceptions are,

  1225. for example,

  1226. singleness

  1227. where there is

  1228. no marriage.

  1229. That's not a

  1230. dishonorable situation.

  1231. That's not a

  1232. dishonorable thing

1233. in the eyes of God.

  1234. In fact,

  1235. when you go to

  1236. Paul's writings,

  1237. he actually says

  1238. that being single

  1239. and unmarried

  1240. has great advantages

  1241. spiritually

  1242. and certainly

  1243. in terms of

  1244. serving the Lord.

  1245. It's not far

  1246. from being despised,

  1247. far from something

  1248. that makes you

  1249. of a lower status.

  1250. It actually gives you

  1251. many advantages

  1252. rather than have

  1253. a household

  1254. where there's a marriage

  1255. where you look

  1256. after your children

  1257. where that takes up

  1258. your time

  1259. and your resources.

  1260. However,

  1261. that's,

  1262. you might say,

  1263. a blameless exception.

  1264. The other blameless

  1265. exception

  1266. that comes to mind

  1267. is a marriage

  1268. where there are

  1269. no children,

  1270. children,

  1271. where children

  1272. can be adopted,

  1273. of course,

  1274. but what I mean

  1275. is where there

  1276. are no natural children.

  1277. That, again,

1278. is not to be seen

  1279. in any way negatively

1280. as if God was cursing

  1281. that relationship.

1282. It's not to be seen

  1283. as other than just

  1284. with God's arrangement.

  1285. And it brings

  1286. its own challenges

  1287. but also its own

  1288. benefits as well.

  1289. But then we live

  1290. in a fallen world.

  1291. And while there are

  1292. these blameless

  1293. exceptions,

  1294. we know very well

  1295. ourselves

  1296. that there are

  1297. other exceptions

  1298. where sin,

  1299. the sin that is

1300. in each one of us,

  1301. the sin that came

  1302. into the world

  1303. and set about

  1304. destroying relationships

  1305. and destroying

  1306. individuals

  1307. in their own lives

  1308. too,

1309. where that is set in

  1310. as we live

  1311. in a fallen world.

  1312. So we've seen

  1313. exceptions

  1314. to the family

  1315. as God's ideal

  1316. over the years

  1317. that set in

  1318. from the time

  1319. of the fall

  1320. of Adam onwards.

  1321. In other words,

  1322. an increase

  1323. in such things

  1324. as divorce,

  1325. cohabitation,

  1326. and same-sex relationships,

  1327. and especially

  1328. in our own day,

  1329. those things

  1330. have been multiplied

  1331. sadly more so

  1332. than at other times.

  1333. We live

  1334. in that fallen world

  1335. and are susceptible

  1336. to all of these

  1337. breakdowns

  1338. in marriage

  1339. and homes

  1340. and families

  1341. and households

  1342. and we're very much

  1343. aware of that

  1344. in our own day.

  1345. So you see,

  1346. the household

  1347. is no longer

  1348. regarded widely

  1349. as the basic unit

  1350. in human society

  1351. because the redefinition

  1352. of family

  1353. has really redefined

  1354. household as well.

  1355. We're living in times

  1356. when people say,

  1357. well, you know,

  1358. you should get rid

  1359. of this idea

  1360. of the nuclear family

  1361. of father,

  1362. mother,

  1363. and children

  1364. if God blesses them

  1365. with children

  1366. or father

  1367. and mother,

  1368. husband and wife.

  1369. These things

  1370. are outdated.

  1371. We need something new

  1372. for this century

  1373. we belong to.

  1374. We need something new,

  1375. something fresh,

  1376. something different

  1377. to what the Bible

  1378. actually says,

  1379. something different

  1380. to these Old Testament

  1381. ideas or New Testament

  1382. ideas.

1383. You need to redefine things.

  1384. Come on,

1385. keep up with the times.

  1386. That's not what people

  1387. want nowadays,

1388. so we need to reject

  1389. all of these previous

  1390. models or ideals

  1391. of family life

  1392. of what a household

  1393. is like

  1394. and what it's for.

  1395. Way back in 1980,

  1396. nearly a quarter

  1397. of a century ago,

  1398. a book came out

  1399. called

  1400. Who Needs the Family?

  1401. Written by a man

  1402. called Olaf R. Johnston.

  1403. And in that book

  1404. he says as follows,

  1405. the family chronicles

  1406. of Genesis 11 to 50,

  1407. verses,

  1408. that's chapters 11 to 50,

  1409. are packed

  1410. to the very end

  1411. of the book

  1412. with intense

  1413. personal records

  1414. of family life,

  1415. jealousy,

  1416. hatred,

  1417. betrayal,

  1418. revenge,

  1419. scheming,

  1420. and deception,

  1421. as well as

  1422. forgiveness,

  1423. faithfulness,

  1424. and joy.

  1425. And he went on

  1426. to say,

  1427. few can fail

  1428. to sense

  1429. the utter modernity

  1430. of this ancient account

  1431. full of deep perception

  1432. of the dynamics

  1433. of family relationships.

  1434. It is no mere

  1435. modern discovery

  1436. that the family

  1437. can be the focus

  1438. of destructive urges,

  1439. a place of damage

  1440. and despair,

1441. as well as of love

  1442. and security.

  1443. Scripture constantly warns

  1444. about the way

  1445. human sin

  1446. can turn the source

  1447. of great blessing

  1448. into the source

  1449. of greatest damage

  1450. and torment.

  1451. that was 1980.

  1452. How much more

  1453. is it the case

  1454. that his words

  1455. are true

  1456. in the generation

  1457. that we actually

  1458. belong to,

  1459. where the household,

  1460. where the basic,

  1461. where the nuclear unit

  1462. of the family

  1463. has been so redefined

  1464. and indeed

  1465. in many places

  1466. so despised.

  1467. You,

  1468. friends,

  1469. have the benefit

  1470. of knowing the gospel,

  1471. of having your Bibles,

  1472. of knowing the teaching

  1473. of your Bibles.

1474. You live in a society

  1475. that's largely

  1476. discarding those things,

  1477. that's shedding

  1478. the influence

  1479. of that truth

  1480. day by day.

  1481. You have the benefit

  1482. of knowing

  1483. what your Bible

  1484. teaches you

  1485. about family life,

  1486. about what a family

  1487. consists of,

  1488. what a household is

  1489. and what it's for.

1490. And we have to express

  1491. our thankfulness

  1492. to God

  1493. that we are in

  1494. this privileged position,

1495. but we have to do it

  1496. by living out

  1497. the ideals

  1498. of God

  1499. in a family setting,

  1500. in family life.

  1501. Because the household

  1502. remains the basic unit

  1503. of human society,

1504. even if we find it

  1505. largely discarded

  1506. as an ideal.

  1507. For us as Christians,

  1508. for us who follow

  1509. the gospel,

  1510. for us who value

  1511. the truth of God,

  1512. it must remain

  1513. this way.

1514. And the more you see

  1515. the family broken up,

  1516. the more you see

1517. the ideal of the family

  1518. discarded,

  1519. the more fractured

  1520. human society

  1521. will become.

  1522. You can see that

  1523. in the generation

  1524. we belong to.

1525. It's not the only reason,

1526. but one of the main reasons

  1527. why you find

  1528. so much

  1529. of a breakdown,

  1530. so much

  1531. in society

  1532. of fractures,

  1533. of tensions,

  1534. all of the things

  1535. that follow on

  1536. from a family unit

  1537. being broken up.

  1538. And the ideal

  1539. of the family

  1540. at the center

  1541. of society

  1542. being discarded.

  1543. Friends,

  1544. we have to

  1545. counter that

  1546. with our own

  1547. family lives.

  1548. Here's the challenge

  1549. for us today

  1550. as we live

  1551. as husbands,

  1552. wives,

  1553. children,

  1554. that we follow

  1555. the ideal

1556. that God has given us

  1557. in His Word

  1558. where the household

1559. is to be the basic

  1560. unit of human society.

  1561. And where the more

  1562. that's the case,

  1563. and especially the more

  1564. like the household

  1565. of Obidadum,

  1566. was blessed by God

  1567. where there's a blessed

  1568. household due to the

  1569. presence of God

  1570. as we'll see in a minute,

  1571. that proves to be

  1572. so influential

  1573. in any community,

  1574. in any society.

  1575. Household,

  1576. what it means.

  1577. People together

  1578. under one roof.

  1579. People in the structures

  1580. that God Himself

  1581. has defined for us

  1582. at His creation.

  1583. Husband,

  1584. wife,

  1585. father,

  1586. mother,

  1587. children,

  1588. others in the

  1589. extended family.

  1590. Household.

  1591. The household

  1592. being the basic

  1593. unit of human society

  1594. all the way

  1595. through the Bible,

  1596. you will find that

1597. in some way or other

  1598. mentioned as

  1599. significant.

  1600. How the household

  1601. proves to be

  1602. part of the gel,

  1603. if you like,

  1604. that holds human society

  1605. together

  1606. in a proper way.

  1607. And the more

  1608. the household disappears,

  1609. the more that gel

  1610. is lost

  1611. and the influence

  1612. is lost

  1613. until the household

  1614. continues to be

  1615. the basic unit

  1616. in human society.

  1617. Thirdly and finally,

1618. what is a blessed household?

1619. Well, let me take you

  1620. back to the words

  1621. of our text today.

1622. The ark of the Lord

  1623. remained in the house

  1624. of Obidadim,

  1625. the Gittite,

  1626. for three months

  1627. and the Lord

  1628. blessed Obidadim

  1629. and all his household.

  1630. And it was told

  1631. King David,

  1632. the Lord has blessed

  1633. the household

  1634. of Obidadim

  1635. and all that belongs

  1636. to him

  1637. because of the ark

  1638. of God.

  1639. That was the reason

  1640. why the Lord

  1641. blessed this household,

  1642. because the ark

  1643. of God

  1644. was stationed there

  1645. for these months.

  1646. And as long as

  1647. the ark was there,

  1648. the blessing of God

  1649. followed.

1650. Now, what was the ark?

  1651. Well, the ark,

  1652. of course, you know

  1653. from Exodus chapter 25

    Exodus 25 chapter mention

  1654. is that wooden chest

  1655. made of acacia wood

  1656. overlaid with gold

  1657. in which Moses

  1658. was instructed

1659. to make for the tabernacle.

1660. It was one of the most important,

1661. if not the most important,

  1662. article of furniture

  1663. in the tabernacle

  1664. where above the box,

  1665. above the ark itself,

1666. was placed the mercy seat

  1667. with the cherubim.

  1668. And it was there

  1669. that God revealed himself,

  1670. the cloud that dwelt

  1671. above the mercy seat,

  1672. indicating the presence

  1673. of God.

1674. The ark is always associated

1675. with the presence of God.

1676. And where you find at times

  1677. the people of Israel

  1678. putting their trust

  1679. in the ark,

  1680. but not having

  1681. the presence of God,

  1682. having disobeyed God,

  1683. having gone away,

  1684. as on one occasion,

  1685. fighting the Philistines,

1686. where the ark of God

  1687. was captured,

1688. where the sons of Eli,

  1689. Hophni and Phinehas,

  1690. were killed.

1691. When the news came back

  1692. to old Eli

  1693. as he sat waiting

1694. for a report of the battle,

  1695. what made him fall

  1696. off backwards

  1697. off his stool

  1698. to his death,

  1699. eventually,

  1700. difficult though it was

1701. to know that his sons

  1702. had died,

  1703. what really struck him

  1704. was the fact

1705. that the ark of God

  1706. had been captured

  1707. by the Philistines.

  1708. The very thing

  1709. that indicated

  1710. the presence of God

  1711. was gone.

  1712. And so,

  1713. that word,

  1714. Ichabod,

1715. as a name for one

  1716. of the children born

  1717. then,

  1718. was actually given

  1719. in relation

  1720. to the loss

  1721. of the ark.

  1722. So,

  1723. the ark

  1724. associated always

  1725. with the presence

  1726. of God,

  1727. and you take that

  1728. on board

  1729. when you look

  1730. at what these verses

  1731. are saying.

  1732. Verse 12,

  1733. the Lord has blessed

  1734. the household

  1735. of Obidadim

  1736. because of the ark

  1737. of God.

  1738. That's,

  1739. of course,

  1740. fulfilled

  1741. in the New Testament

  1742. because the presence

  1743. of God

  1744. is no longer

  1745. above a wooden chest

  1746. like the ark.

1747. it's now in his people.

1748. He lives in their hearts.

  1749. God actually comes

1750. to make a dwelling place

  1751. for himself

  1752. in the hearts

  1753. of his people

  1754. so that together

  1755. they constitute

  1756. the home

  1757. God has made

  1758. for himself.

  1759. John 14,

    John 14:23

  1760. verse 23.

  1761. That's the blessed household,

  1762. the household

  1763. that has God

  1764. at its heart,

  1765. the household

  1766. where God lives,

  1767. where God is real,

  1768. where God is worshipped.

  1769. What is it,

  1770. can we say,

  1771. about that household

  1772. that makes it special?

  1773. Why is a household

  1774. as the household

  1775. of God

  1776. so distinct

  1777. and so important

  1778. in this day

  1779. and generation

  1780. we belong to?

  1781. Well,

  1782. four things,

  1783. I think,

  1784. at least,

  1785. you can mention.

  1786. We can mention

  1787. other things

  1788. related to that

  1789. you could think

  1790. of yourselves too.

  1791. A blessed home

  1792. has God

  1793. at its heart

  1794. and one of the

  1795. significant elements

  1796. there is parental faith,

  1797. the faith

  1798. of the parents

  1799. or parent,

  1800. the faith

  1801. that actually

  1802. teaches children

  1803. the importance

1804. of the Word of God

1805. and the worship of God.

  1806. What has to be

  1807. in our homes

  1808. must begin,

  1809. first of all,

  1810. in our hearts.

  1811. Where our hearts

  1812. don't have the presence

  1813. of God,

1814. our home is not going

  1815. to have the presence

  1816. of God.

  1817. Where our hearts

  1818. have God present,

1819. if this is dwelling place

  1820. of God

  1821. in our souls

  1822. individually,

  1823. in the souls

  1824. of fathers

  1825. and mothers,

  1826. then that's passed on

  1827. to the children

  1828. by way of them

  1829. being taught

  1830. these things of God.

  1831. The fact that God

  1832. is in that home

  1833. makes all the difference.

  1834. That's why it's wonderful

  1835. to have

  1836. Christian families,

  1837. families

  1838. who profess God

  1839. as their God,

  1840. who want God

  1841. to be the God

  1842. of their children,

  1843. their grandchildren.

  1844. We're blessed

1845. with having many of those

  1846. families,

  1847. and it's something

1848. we need to pray over.

  1849. Pray for God's protection

  1850. over parents

  1851. who are seeking

  1852. to bring up children

  1853. in a way that

  1854. teaches them

  1855. the things of God

  1856. in a generation

  1857. that largely

  1858. doesn't want to know,

  1859. and not only

  1860. doesn't want to know,

  1861. but it's really

  1862. against those ideas

  1863. and those ideals.

  1864. Parental faith

1865. at the heart of things,

  1866. first of all,

  1867. and then the home

  1868. benefits from that.

  1869. You see many instances

  1870. in the Bible

  1871. where a home

  1872. has benefited

  1873. from the fact

  1874. that the parents

  1875. or a parent

1876. has had faith in God.

  1877. That brings blessedness

  1878. into that home.

  1879. The second thing

  1880. is worship.

  1881. A blessed home

  1882. is a home

  1883. where worship

  1884. exists meaningfully,

1885. where the Word of God

  1886. is read,

1887. where the Word of God

  1888. is explained,

1889. where the Word of God

  1890. is important,

  1891. where prayer

  1892. is exercised,

  1893. where praise

  1894. to God

  1895. is exercised.

  1896. It's a miniature,

  1897. really,

  1898. of the life

  1899. of the church.

  1900. The household

  1901. of God

  1902. that the church

  1903. is has its miniature

  1904. in the home

  1905. as the household

  1906. where father,

  1907. mother,

  1908. children together,

  1909. and others maybe

  1910. share in the Word

  1911. of God

  1912. with each other.

  1913. Worship

  1914. in our homes

  1915. is crucial.

  1916. How many homes

  1917. in Stornoway today

  1918. have worship

  1919. as a feature

  1920. of their life?

  1921. I'm quite sure

  1922. they're in

  1923. a majority

  1924. compared to those

  1925. that do.

  1926. But as it was

  1927. for Joshua,

  1928. as he declared

  1929. at one time

  1930. in the book

  1931. of Joshua

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  1932. chapter 24,

  1933. choose this day

  1934. whom you will serve,

1935. he said to the people.

  1936. As for me

  1937. and my household,

  1938. we will worship

  1939. the Lord.

  1940. We will have

  1941. the Lord

  1942. as our God.

  1943. We will serve

  1944. the Lord.

  1945. That's the conviction

  1946. of your heart

  1947. surely today.

  1948. That's the conviction

  1949. of the hearts

  1950. of all today here

  1951. who are parents

  1952. or grandparents

  1953. who want their homes

  1954. to be blessed,

  1955. who want their homes

  1956. and their children

  1957. and their relatives

  1958. to be blessed.

1959. It begins in your own heart,

1960. it moves from your own heart

  1961. to your practice

  1962. in the home

1963. of having the Word read,

  1964. having the Word explained,

1965. taking time with the children

  1966. to explain it,

1967. which I know many of you do.

  1968. I'm not saying this

1969. because it's not the case.

  1970. But just to reiterate

  1971. the importance

  1972. of those issues

  1973. for ourselves today,

  1974. there's parental faith,

  1975. there is worship,

  1976. the worship of God,

1977. and there is what I'm calling

  1978. shaping of lives.

  1979. The shaping of lives,

  1980. for example,

  1981. in Ephesians especially,

  1982. the Apostle Paul wrote

  1983. to families,

  1984. but he differentiated there.

1985. He gave a word firstly

  1986. to husbands and wives

  1987. and their marriage relationship.

1988. He then passed that on

  1989. to children

1990. and then even to slaves

1991. or to servants in the home.

  1992. He had instruction

1993. from the Word of God,

  1994. from God,

1995. to each of those elements

  1996. in a household.

1997. And you remember what he said,

  1998. children,

1999. as far as children were concerned,

  2000. he then said,

2001. honor your father and mother,

2002. obey your parents in the Lord,

  2003. for this is right.

  2004. Fathers,

2005. do not provoke your children

  2006. to anger,

  2007. but bring them up

  2008. in the discipline

  2009. and instruction

  2010. of the Lord.

  2011. In other words,

  2012. these words,

  2013. discipline and instruction,

  2014. really mean that

  2015. in this blessed home,

  2016. in this godly home,

2017. the home that has God

  2018. at his heart.

  2019. It's a place where

  2020. children's will

  2021. is shaped through training

  2022. and where children's minds

  2023. are shaped through teaching.

2024. Two things always go together.

  2025. Where a children's will

  2026. is shaped through training,

  2027. through seeing the parents

  2028. as an example,

2029. and the teaching they receive

  2030. instructs their mind,

2031. the mind and the will,

  2032. as they're shaped

2033. by the truth of God.

  2034. And that's literally

  2035. what it means

  2036. in that context

  2037. in Ephesians.

2038. Our children are to be

  2039. trained, shaped.

2040. Just like you train a plant

2041. to follow a certain direction,

  2042. you train it,

  2043. you shape it.

  2044. That's what's needed

2045. for our lives as well.

2046. And it's the Word of God

  2047. that brings that shaping

  2048. to our lives.

2049. It's the Word of God

  2050. that brings about

  2051. that training

  2052. of our lives.

  2053. So there's parental faith,

  2054. there's worship,

  2055. a blessed home,

  2056. it's one where shaping

  2057. takes place for ourselves

  2058. as adults and parents,

  2059. for children as well.

  2060. And fourthly,

  2061. and not least,

  2062. where the Lord's day

  2063. is honoured.

2064. And I'm putting that in

  2065. because it's something

2066. which we have to remind ourselves

  2067. is a feature

  2068. of a blessed home.

  2069. A home where the Lord's day

  2070. is honoured.

  2071. Where our children,

2072. if we have children with us,

2073. as we have today here,

2074. come to realise the value

  2075. of being with others

2076. in the public worship of God,

2077. to be part of the visible church

  2078. that worships God

  2079. and has that privilege

  2080. of worship

  2081. and of rest spiritually.

  2082. It's a home where worship

  2083. is a familiar feature,

  2084. where the Lord's day

  2085. is a familiar feature,

  2086. where the Lord's day

2087. is seen to be different

2088. to the other days of the week.

  2089. Not talking about

  2090. legalistic observance

  2091. of rules and regulations,

2092. but out of love for God,

  2093. where we actually value

  2094. His Word

  2095. and His day

  2096. and His people

  2097. and His own setting

  2098. of family life

  2099. in His own ideals.

  2100. Now, the greatest endorsement,

2101. I think, of family life

  2102. really comes from

  2103. the incarnation

2104. of the Son of God,

2105. of the coming of Jesus,

  2106. the Son of God,

  2107. taking human nature

  2108. to Himself

  2109. and continuing

  2110. to be God

  2111. and man

  2112. in His own person.

  2113. That really is

  2114. the greatest endorsement,

  2115. I would feel,

  2116. of family life

  2117. because He came

  2118. to be born

  2119. into a family.

  2120. I'm turning to Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

2121. where you find Him there

  2122. with Mary, His mother,

  2123. and Joseph,

  2124. her husband,

  2125. regarded there

  2126. as His parents

  2127. as they went

  2128. to Jerusalem

  2129. every year

  2130. at the Feast

  2131. of the Passover.

  2132. And you remember

  2133. when He was 12,

  2134. they found Him

  2135. in the temple

  2136. teaching and disputing

2137. with those who were skilled

  2138. in the teachings

  2139. of the law.

  2140. And of course,

  2141. they turned back

2142. and went to look for Him.

  2143. This is where

  2144. they found Him.

  2145. And

  2146. He said to them,

2147. His mother said to them,

  2148. Your father and I

  2149. have been searching

2150. for you in great distress.

  2151. He said to them,

2152. Why are you looking for me?

  2153. Do you not know

  2154. that I must be

  2155. in my father's house?

2156. And they did not understand

  2157. the things

2158. that He was saying to them.

  2159. And He went down

  2160. with them

  2161. and came to Nazareth

2162. and was submissive to them.

  2163. And His mother

  2164. treasured up

  2165. all these things

  2166. in her heart.

  2167. You see,

  2168. He spoke about

  2169. His father's house,

  2170. the spiritual dwelling

  2171. place of God

  2172. which was associated

  2173. then with the temple

  2174. where they found Him.

2175. But then He went home

  2176. to His own household

  2177. and He was submissive

  2178. to them there.

  2179. The Son of God

  2180. in our human nature,

  2181. the Son of God

  2182. being an obedient child.

2183. At 12 years of age,

  2184. He submitted Himself

  2185. to the authority

  2186. of His parents

  2187. even though He knew

  2188. they were somewhat wrong

  2189. in their thinking

  2190. of why He wasn't

  2191. actually with them

  2192. on the journey.

  2193. Then you see this.

  2194. And Jesus increased

  2195. in wisdom

  2196. and in stature

  2197. and in favor

  2198. with God

  2199. and man.

  2200. Now that's not just

  2201. tacked on

  2202. to the previous verses

  2203. loosely

  2204. or just added

  2205. just by way

  2206. of an added thought.

2207. What that is telling us

  2208. is that

  2209. the context

  2210. in which Jesus

  2211. increased

  2212. in wisdom

  2213. and in stature

  2214. and in favor

  2215. with God

  2216. and man

2217. was in His family home,

  2218. in His family setting,

  2219. and being brought up

  2220. there as a child

  2221. in that family

  2222. that He had willingly

  2223. given Himself to.

2224. There is your great example.

  2225. There is your endorsement

  2226. of family

  2227. and of family life.

  2228. It's stamped

2229. by the Son of God

  2230. in His incarnation

  2231. as the central,

  2232. important,

  2233. instructive unit

  2234. in human society.

  2235. Today we belong

  2236. to a household.

  2237. Today we find

  2238. the household

  2239. as the basic unit

  2240. of human society.

  2241. Even today

  2242. that's still the case.

  2243. And today we find

  2244. a blessed household

  2245. as a household

  2246. where the presence

  2247. of God is known,

  2248. where God is worshipped,

  2249. where His truth

  2250. shapes our lives,

2251. and where the Lord's day

  2252. is an important feature

  2253. of it.

  2254. And may God bless

  2255. these thoughts

  2256. to us today.

  2257. We're going to conclude

  2258. by singing

  2259. in Psalm 128,

  2260. 128,

  2261. page 172.

  2262. How blessed are all

  2263. who fear the Lord,

  2264. who walk the way

  2265. that He has shown.

  2266. Success and blessing

  2267. will be yours.

2268. You will eat the fruit

  2269. that you have grown.

  2270. Your wife will be

  2271. a fruitful vine,

  2272. and round your table

  2273. will be placed.

  2274. Your children,

  2275. like young olive shoots,

  2276. thus he who fears

  2277. the Lord is blessed.

  2278. May you behold

  2279. Jerusalem's good.

  2280. From Zion may God's

  2281. blessing flow.

  2282. Your children's children

  2283. may you see.

  2284. May God on Israel

  2285. peace bestow.

  2286. We'll stand to sing

  2287. these verses.

  2288. How blessed are all

  2289. who fear the Lord,

  2290. who walk the way

  2291. that He has shown.

  2292. Success and blessing

  2293. will be yours.

2294. You will eat the fruit

  2295. that you have grown.

  2296. Your wife will be

  2297. a fruitful vine,

  2298. and round your table

  2299. will be placed.

  2300. Your children,

  2301. like young olive shoots,

  2302. thus he who fears,

  2303. the Lord is blessed.

  2304. may you behold

  2305. Jerusalem's good.

  2306. From Zion may God's

  2307. blessing flow.

  2308. Your children's children

  2309. may you see.

  2310. May God on Israel

  2311. Israel peace bestow.

  2312. This morning I'll go

  2313. to the door here

  2314. to my left.

  2315. Now may the grace

2316. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

2317. the love of God the Father,

  2318. and the communion

  2319. of the Holy Spirit

  2320. be with you now

  2321. and evermore.

  2322. Amen.

  2323. Thank you so much.

  2324. I hope you wonderful

  2325. for all your time.

2326. All my time I should

  2327. tohida Him,

  2328. to shepherd him Melanna
