  1. Well, we're going to begin our worship now, and our first psalm of praise is Psalm 68.

  2. Psalm 68, that's in the Scottish Psalter, page 301.

  3. Tune is St Andrew.

  4. We're singing verses 1 to 5.

  5. Let God arise, and scattered let all his enemies be,

  6. and let all those that do him hate before his presence flee.

  7. As smoke is driven, so drive thou them, as fire melts, walks away.

  8. Before God's face, let wicked men so perish and decay, but let the righteous be glad.

  9. Let them before God's sight be very joyful.

  10. Yea, let them rejoice with all their might.

  11. Verses 1 to 5 in Psalm 68.

  12. Let God arise.

  13. For Christ unscathed him, let all his enemies be,

  14. and let all those that do him hate before his presence flee.

  15. Let them rejoice with all their might.

  16. Now아rin Dr. John ahoneties, even though his ihmics be,

  17. and let all those to Oliver Walsh are given from their lives from their estaba biomarked.

  18. Should every time be king, let them grow with all our might.

  19. God's side, in many joy, who yield and can rejoice with all their minds.

  20. We all sing to His names in praise, extraordinary when your voice

  21. and lies on Him by His name John, before His face rejoice.

  22. Because the Lord the Father is, until the Father rests.

  23. For this the way, O stars within, is grace of holiness.

  24. Let's unite now our hearts in prayer. We're going to call upon the Lord in prayer.

  25. Amen. Gracious and Almighty God, we give thanks that we tonight are appearing

  26. before this God of whom we have been singing.

  27. God who is so immense in His might and power, in His authority, in all aspects of His being.

  28. We thank you, Lord, for the privilege of being able to draw near to you

  29. and to do so in a way that is not intimidated by your greatness.

  30. And for we have come, O Lord, before you tonight to use that new and living way that you have opened up for us,

  31. that we may have access into your presence, that we may come even with boldness to the throne of grace,

  32. so that we may receive grace and mercy in our time of need.

  33. Lord, bless us, we pray, as we come together in this way and as we together call upon your name

  34. and sing your praises and dwell our mind upon your word.

  35. We ask again that you would draw near to us and by your Holy Spirit bless us

  36. so that your word may find lodgment in our hearts.

  37. Give us, Lord, we pray, to increase in our knowledge of you and our commitment to you

  38. in all aspects of what we ought to be in love and in belief, in faith, in hope.

  39. We ask that all of these and all our other graces that come from your Spirit might be multiplied in our hearts.

  40. We thank you, Lord, for the life we enjoy as a congregation of your people,

  41. for the way that we are enabled together to progress those matters that are on our weekly bulletin sheet,

  42. not only in the worship services of the congregation,

  43. but also, Lord, in the many other activities that we engage in

  44. and that we seek from you, your blessing, that they may be blessed to us.

  45. We ask again, O Lord, for this coming week

  46. that you would be with us in all that we anticipate taking part in.

  47. We thank you for the facility of being able to draw near to you

  48. and draw together from those privileges that we have.

  49. We pray that you would bless us, Lord, as we set out these gatherings and groups of various kinds.

  50. We ask your blessing for our children, for our young people.

  51. We pray that you would continue, Lord, to bless them in Sunday School and Bible class

  52. and also in Twinnies and in Cresce,

  53. in all the activities that take place relating to them from week to week.

  54. Bless them, Lord, we pray, and bless their homes and families.

  55. Be pleased, we pray, to strengthen them in these difficult days

  56. against all the attempts that are made to take our mind away from the principles of the Gospel

  57. and from those ways of life that are pleasing to you.

  58. And we ask, Lord, that you would provide us with further help in teaching our young people in Sunday School.

  59. We pray that you would move some in the congregation to offer themselves for that work

  60. and give them, Lord, we pray, a burden for these young souls.

  61. We pray that you would grant us that provision, O Lord, at this time,

  62. for we would want to see your own cause advance amongst our young people and children.

  63. And we pray, to that end, that you would provide us, Lord, with that help.

  64. We pray, too, for all other meetings anticipated this week,

  65. for the prayer meetings, for the annual meeting, for the 55-plus fellowship.

  66. Lord, we ask that all of these might be blessed by you

  67. and may be of benefit to all who attend.

  68. We thank you again for your upholding of us through this year

  69. as we reflect upon another year and find another report

  70. of the year's life in the congregation.

  71. We ask, O Lord, that we may continue to depend upon you.

  72. And as we face various restrictions and challenges,

  73. both financially and in other ways,

  74. in such times as we live in, Lord, we give thanks

  75. for those who uphold your cause financially,

  76. for those who pray for the ministry of the gospel,

  77. for those, O Lord, who themselves would want to see your cause flourish.

  78. We pray that you would continue to provide for us with these resources,

  79. and that you would help us in all the activities of the congregation

  80. to see that growth that we pray for and yearn for.

  81. Remember those of particular responsibilities in the congregation.

  82. Help those who are in office, both as elders and deacons.

  83. We commit the life of the session and the deacon's court to you.

  84. We ask, O Lord, as we set about our tasks from month to month,

  85. that you'd be pleased to bless us.

  86. Give to us the guidance of your Holy Spirit.

  87. Bless those who are involved, Lord, in leading the congregation in praise.

  88. We thank you for all of them, both in English and Gaelic.

  89. We pray that you would provide us with further resources in that regard as well.

  90. Maintain us, Lord, we pray, in a way that would, in a healthy fashion,

  91. reach forward in witnessing and testifying to you

  92. in the community we belong to.

  93. We remember, Lord, also all others who help in the congregation.

  94. Remember the various groups that meet from time to time,

  95. and we ask that you would continue to bless them too.

  96. And be with Marianne and with Roddy and with Lizzie as well in their tasks,

  97. and with all who help with the live stream and with the IT system that we have.

  98. We thank you for them, and we pray that you would grant us, Lord,

  99. that we may continue to have these resources provided for us

  100. and people who are sufficiently active and interested in them.

  101. Bless, we pray, all the congregations of the town.

  102. We thank you for the ongoing witness of your people in different denominations,

  103. and we pray that you would continue to bless us, Lord, in our generation

  104. with people who will take up the burden and the responsibility

  105. and the privilege of serving you openly and testifying to your grace.

  106. And we ask, O God, that you would continue to hear our prayers

  107. for your cause in our midst, in our locality.

  108. Bless those who are involved in various activities in our community as well.

  109. We thank you, Lord, of those who provide us with nursing care and expertise

  110. in our hospital and hospice, in our care homes, in our surgeries and in our clinics.

  111. We ask, O Lord, that all of these will continue to be blessed to us

  112. and that you'd bless those who are actively involved in them.

  113. We pray that you would grant blessing to those who help us

  114. in our times of bereavement and sorrow.

  115. Bless the undertakers who so willingly give of their time and of their gifts.

  116. And we thank you for their demeanor and the way in which they so willingly help

  117. bereaved families virtually every week of life.

  118. Bless those, Lord, in the congregation who are bereaved in these days.

  119. And we ask that you bless them as they experience the pain of loss.

  120. Grant to comfort them, we pray, and guide them in your way

  121. and draw them to yourself and speak to them, we pray, and to their pain

  122. so that by your own comfort they may advance from day to day.

  123. And so be pleased to bless us now as we further wait upon you here.

  124. And in all of these things, we ask, O Lord, that you would forgive our sins

  125. that we now confess before you.

  126. And we pray that you would cleanse us from our iniquity.

  127. Wash us freely, we pray, and present us before you

  128. as clean in your sight.

  129. Grant all these mercies to us, we pray.

  130. In Jesus' name and for his sake.

  131. Amen.

  132. We're going to sing again to God's praise.

  133. This time our psalm is Psalm 130.

  134. 130.

  135. That's on page 421.

  136. The tune is Martyrdom.

  137. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried.

  138. My voice, Lord, do thou hear, and to my supplications voice

  139. give an attentive ear.

  140. Lord, who shall stand, if thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquity?

  141. But yet with thee forgiveness is, that feared thou mayest be.

  142. We're thankful to God for all these great contrasts that he brings us in his word.

  143. The contrast here in Psalm 130 between what would be the case

  144. if God were to hold our iniquity against us

  145. and mark them against us forever on our account.

  146. The contrast between that and the wonder of his forgiveness

  147. that he so freely bestows.

  148. So Psalm 130, the whole psalm.

  149. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried.

  150. Amen.

  151. Amen.

  152. Amen.

  153. To thee I cried.

  154. My voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  155. Unto my soul, the gracious voice

  156. And the gospel voice

  157. And the glory of God, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquity?

  158. Lord, who shall stand, if thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquity?

  159. I can't with thee forgiveness is that near the mercy.

  160. I wait for God, my soul not wait, my hope is in His word.

  161. For that may die, for glory watch, my soul rich for the Lord.

  162. I say, Lord, I may come to watch the morning light to see.

  163. Let Israel hold with the Lord, for with Him ever cease to be.

  164. Thank Jesus' redemption, it's ever come with Him.

  165. And from all His daily riches, He is the child redeemed.

  166. Now let's turn to read God's word now.

  167. Our reading this evening is from Paul's letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  168. And we'll read from the beginning of chapter 4, down as far as verse 16.

  169. Ephesians chapter 4, from the beginning.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  170. I, therefore a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,

  171. with all humility and gentleness and patience, bading with one another in love,

  172. eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

  173. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call.

  174. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all,

  175. who is over all and through all and in all.

  176. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  177. Therefore it says, when He ascended on high, He led a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.

  178. In saying He ascended, what does it mean but that He had also descended into the lower parts of the earth?

  179. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all heavens, that He might fill all things.

  180. And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,

  181. to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

  182. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  183. to mature manhood to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  184. So that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by the waves

  185. and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness and deceitful schemes.

  186. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head into Christ,

  187. from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,

  188. when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

  189. Amen. And may God again bless to us, reading that portion of His Word.

  190. We'll sing again in Psalm 76 this time.

  191. Psalm 76, that's on page 99 to a tune martyrs.

  192. And we're singing verses 1 to 7.

  193. In Judah's land, God's name is known.

  194. In Israel, He is great.

  195. In Salem, He has pitched His tent.

  196. His home in Zion set.

  197. He broke the fiery arrows there, the military might of those who with their swords and shields against us came to fight.

  198. Your splendor is more glorious than hillsides rich with prey.

  199. Brave men were stripped of all their spoil.

  200. Asleep in death they lay.

  201. Not one of those great warriors could lift his hands to kill.

  202. At your rebuke, O Jacob's God, rider and horse lay still.

  203. For you alone are to be feared.

  204. Before you, who can stand?

  205. Who can endure your anger, Lord?

  206. The judgments you command.

  207. These verses then to the tune martyrs in Judah's land.

  208. God's name is known.

  209. God's name is known.

  210. He is great.

  211. In satisfaction from the Great Lakes

  212. Is the Son of God

  213. The Holy Child

  214. The will and dirty might of those who with their swords and shields

  215. And his love came to light Your splendor is more glorious

  216. On hillsides rich with rain They've been western of all their spoils

  217. Our sweet red dead they live

  218. No one of those great warriors To lift his hands to kill

  219. And you renew, O Jacob's God

  220. My God and heart stay still

  221. For you alone are to be feared Before you who can stand

  222. Who can endure you and the Lord The judgment you've all done

  223. If you turn with me please now to the book of Psalms and Psalm 68

  224. Tonight we're going to look mainly at verse 18

  225. You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train

  226. And receiving gifts among men

  227. Even among the rebellious that the Lord may dwell there

  228. Blessed be the Lord who daily bears us up

  229. God is our salvation

  230. Our God is a God of salvation

  231. And to God the Lord belong deliverances from death

  232. Well it's no accident that you find the words of verse 18

  233. Coupled with verses 19 and 20

  234. Verses 19 and 20 that speak of the Lord

  235. Who upholds his people

  236. Who is a God of salvation

  237. And to him belong deliverances from death

  238. It's no accident that that is closely related to

  239. What you find in verse 18

  240. The Lord ascending on high

  241. Leading a host of captives in his train

  242. And as we read in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  243. As you well know these words are taken by the Apostle Paul

  244. And quoted in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  245. To fit in with the emphasis that he's giving there

  246. Of the Lord and his church

  247. And the provision he has made for his church

  248. He's especially concerned to emphasize there in Ephesians 4

  249. The various gifts that Christ has bestowed upon his church

  250. To endow his church for the work that he has given his church in this world

  251. And on into the next

  252. And in this psalm we find a wonderful emphasis all the way through

  253. It's really in a sense a military psalm

  254. A military type psalm

  255. Which speaks of the exploits of God

  256. As he goes before his people

  257. And as he gives them the capacity and the power to overcome their enemies

  258. We need the Old Testament here and the New Testament

  259. To fully explore the contents of this psalm

  260. But especially where we come to Jesus

  261. Where we come to his death and resurrection

  262. And as we're looking at tonight

  263. His ascension to the throne of God on high

  264. To the Father's right hand

  265. And so the psalm really begins with that great cry

  266. God shall arise or let God arise

  267. Let his enemies be scattered

  268. And these words were in Numbers chapter 10

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  269. They were associated with the carrying of the ark forward

  270. Chapter 10 verse 35 I think it is

  271. They were carrying the ark forward

  272. And whenever the ark was to move forward

  273. The people were to cry

  274. Let God arise

  275. And let his enemies be scattered

  276. Because the ark of caution in itself represented

  277. The dwelling of God amongst his people

  278. So that as the ark moved

  279. It was symbolical of the Lord being with his people

  280. Moving with his people

  281. And setting out as it were ahead of his people

  282. To lead them against whatever difficulties and enmity

  283. They met with on the way

  284. But then the psalm moves on

  285. To speak about a battle scene

  286. And a victory scene

  287. And a procession of victory

  288. As you find here in verse 18 especially

  289. And ending with the Lord on his hill

  290. Near the end of the psalm

  291. But also an emphasis on dispensing the spoils

  292. As we'll see the spoils of victory

  293. As these are dispensed to his people

  294. Fitting in with what you find in Ephesians Chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  295. The Lord dispensing the various gifts

  296. That he has actually obtained for his church

  297. As a consequence of his own great work of redemption in Christ

  298. And so as we look at these

  299. We can see tonight that these are emphasizing

  300. The privilege that God's people have

  301. Of having this God not only in their midst

  302. But going before them

  303. Because the same principle follows through

  304. From what you find in the psalm

  305. And in the Old Testament

  306. And Ephesians Chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  307. That same principle remains for us today

  308. That God goes before us

  309. That God is with us

  310. That God in our midst is mighty

  311. That none of his enemies will overcome him

  312. And therefore none of the enemies of his church

  313. Will overcome them either

  314. Because they are led by him

  315. And they are safe in him

  316. You know that in some church calendars

  317. Some denominations

  318. Anglicans for example

  319. And others

  320. They have what's known as

  321. An ecclesiastical calendar

  322. There are certain days appointed through the year

  323. That they in a rota year by year

  324. Actually associate with certain aspects of biblical truth

  325. And apparently we don't follow that

  326. Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with it

  327. But last Thursday was what's known as Ascension Day

  328. A day that's focused on the ascension of Jesus

  329. To the right hand of the throne of God on high

  330. And although we don't mark that as a day

  331. The ascension of the Lord is really hugely important for us

  332. It's something perhaps we don't give as much attention to as we should

  333. We do give attention more to the resurrection of Christ

  334. The death of Christ

  335. The resurrection of Christ

  336. Perhaps even the intercession of Jesus at the right hand of God

  337. But the ascension in itself is also critically important

  338. To our understanding of what really forms the basis of our redemption in Christ

  339. Because the ascension of Jesus is something that sets out the Father's acceptance of him

  340. And of his work beginning with his resurrection from the dead

  341. And then that moving into his ascension

  342. Where he is taken from earth to heaven

  343. And now sits at the right hand of the throne of God

  344. And so thinking of the ascension

  345. Tonight we're looking at that in the light of these words in verse 18

  346. But also of course as we said taking account of the fact that

  347. That is all fitting into the New Testament emphasis too

  348. So we're looking firstly at the Lord's ascension in victory

  349. And then secondly at the Lord's distribution of gifts to his church

  350. In consequence of what he has done and of the ascension itself

  351. And of course Ephesians 4 reminded us that you cannot think of the ascension

  352. Without thinking first of the incarnation of the descent of the Lord of Jesus

  353. Of Christ the second person of the Trinity

  354. You cannot think of his ascension without as Paul saying

  355. First of all thinking of his descending

  356. He descended into the lower depths of the earth

  357. By which he meant his death

  358. He came into the world specifically to give himself as a ransom in his death for his people

  359. And that precedes logically

  360. It precedes not just logical but theologically

  361. It precedes his ascension

  362. It's only as he has died and then risen from the dead

  363. Or been raised from the dead

  364. It's only then that you can think of his ascension

  365. But his ascension to the throne of God on high

  366. As it logically follows his death and resurrection

  367. So it also theologically follows

  368. Because the Lord's approval, the Father's approval of him

  369. Is set out and approval of his death

  370. As fully sufficient for the salvation of his people

  371. Is set out and everything that follows on

  372. And then they come to the gifts that he bestows upon his church as well

  373. So the incarnation is an important fact that precedes the ascension of the Lord

  374. But as you look at the ascension

  375. You ascended on high

  376. Leading a host of captives in your train

  377. The first step towards the ascension

  378. As we said is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead

  379. We have to take these things as factually and literally correct

  380. These are not the Bible setting out things symbolically

  381. As if there was no actual physical resurrection of Jesus from the dead

  382. That's a popular opinion

  383. That's something that we find difficult to accept

  384. Until the Lord lays it upon our hearts

  385. And opens our minds

  386. And opens our heart to the fact of that

  387. That if there's no actual resurrection

  388. It's not all that long ago

  389. We took some time to go through 1 Corinthians 15

  390. Where Paul very emphatically says

  391. If there has been no resurrection from the dead

  392. On the part of Jesus

  393. Then there is no point to the gospel

  394. There's no salvation for us

  395. There's nothing of the kind of life

  396. That Jesus in the Bible has said to bring to us

  397. The eternal life

  398. Everything stops

  399. If Jesus has not been raised from the dead

  400. It ends with his death

  401. That's it

  402. Finished

  403. So there's no resurrection for us afterwards either

  404. Life is done

  405. When you die

  406. When your body is laid into the grave

  407. That's it

  408. Paul is saying

  409. If that's our opinion

  410. If that's what we think

  411. We are of all people most to be pitied

  412. Our faith is in vain

  413. Our preaching is in vain

  414. There is no point to anything of what we're doing tonight

  415. If Jesus isn't at the right hand of God tonight

  416. If Jesus hasn't in fact literally

  417. Risen from the dead

  418. And been raised from the dead by the Father

  419. You know that yourselves

  420. But Paul saw fit to emphasize it

  421. For the church at Corinth

  422. And we need to re-emphasize it for ourselves

  423. That our salvation deals with facts

  424. The fact of the incarnation

  425. The fact of the death of the cross

  426. The fact of Christ's burial

  427. The fact of his resurrection

  428. And now the fact of his ascension

  429. To the right hand of God

  430. And it's important that

  431. What's important certainly

  432. In the theology that we follow

  433. As Reformed theology

  434. It's important that we

  435. Think particularly of the continuity

  436. Of the person of Christ

  437. All the way through

  438. That this is not a different person

  439. Who ascended on high

  440. After he died on the cross

  441. It's the same Jesus

  442. The same person

  443. And the same person of the Godhead

  444. As well

  445. Second person of the Trinity

  446. The Westminster Confession of Faith

  447. Which we use in our church

  448. And have been using

  449. Ever since we were established

  450. As a church

  451. It says in chapter 8 verse 4

  452. On the third day

  453. He rose from the dead

  454. With the same body

  455. In which he suffered

  456. And that's an important emphasis

  457. He rose from the dead

  458. With the same body

  459. In which he suffered

  460. With which also

  461. He ascended into heaven

  462. And there sitteth

  463. At the right hand

  464. Of his Father

  465. Why is that important?

  466. Because the continuity

  467. Of his person

  468. Is important for yourself

  469. And myself

  470. That we can see

  471. That in this one person

  472. Of Jesus Christ

  473. All the way through

  474. From the incarnation

  475. To the death of the cross

  476. The resurrection

  477. On to ascension

  478. It's the same person

  479. Death has not interfered

  480. With his person

  481. Death hasn't done anything

  482. To stop that whole process

  483. Of incarnation

  484. Death

  485. Resurrection

  486. Ascension to glory

  487. And that's part of

  488. What lies for us tonight

  489. As the basis of our hope

  490. Our hope

  491. For eternal life

  492. And remember

  493. Philippians 2

  494. Verses 11 to 9

  495. Tells us

  496. How high Jesus

  497. Has been set

  498. In his exaltation

  499. His ascension to heaven

  500. And his exaltation

  501. And session

  502. At the right hand of God

  503. God has highly

  504. Exalted him

  505. How highly

  506. Is Jesus exalted

  507. How highly

  508. Is the saviour

  509. Tonight

  510. Whom we worship

  511. In our worship service

  512. How high is he

  513. He's at the right hand

  514. Of God

  515. What does that mean

  516. It means he's as high

  517. As you can possibly

  518. Conceive of

  519. And indeed

  520. If you followed

  521. Professor John Murray

  522. In one of his comments

  523. In his volume

  524. One of his volumes

  525. Not even God

  526. He says

  527. Could conceive

  528. Of a higher

  529. Than the position

  530. That Jesus occupies

  531. Because it's

  532. Deserving of

  533. The highest

  534. Possible place

  535. That God

  536. Could give him

  537. In consequence

  538. Of all that he has done

  539. And that's where he is

  540. And that's where he is

  541. Until he returns

  542. To earth

  543. But that is his position

  544. That's his status

  545. That is the saviour

  546. You believe in

  547. That's the saviour

  548. We worship

  549. That's the saviour

  550. We expect to come back

  551. To this world

  552. Not some puny figure

  553. And not even

  554. The son of God

  555. In the incarnation

  556. As he came

  557. In the form

  558. Of humanity

  559. Bearing the sin

  560. Of his people

  561. He will come

  562. As he now is

  563. The glorious

  564. Exalted

  565. Ascended

  566. Son of God

  567. And that's what we

  568. Hold out

  569. As part of

  570. What we hope

  571. Towards

  572. On the day

  573. That Jesus returns

  574. But there's a procession

  575. Here is the Lord's

  576. Ascension and victory

  577. Incarnation

  578. Followed by ascension

  579. But there's a procession

  580. Mentioned here

  581. And it's picked up again

  582. In Ephesians

  583. Quoting this verse

  584. You ascended on high

  585. Leading a host

  586. Of captives

  587. In your train

  588. When you go to the older

  589. Authorized version

  590. The way that's

  591. Translated there

  592. He

  593. Leading captivity

  594. Captive

  595. And possibly

  596. That's a better way

  597. Of translating

  598. What you have

  599. In the text

  600. Of the psalm

  601. You ascended up on high

  602. Leading captivity

  603. Captive

  604. Or you led

  605. Captivity

  606. Captive

  607. What does that

  608. Actually mean?

  609. Well it means

  610. Essentially

  611. That

  612. Those who held

  613. Us the powers

  614. That held

  615. Us captive

  616. The powers

  617. Of sin

  618. The power

  619. Of satan

  620. By the death

  621. Of jesus

  622. By his resurrection

  623. By his ascension

  624. The picture you have

  625. Here is of these

  626. Great powers

  627. Greater than

  628. Ourselves

  629. These powers

  630. Being vanquished

  631. These powers

  632. Now being overcome

  633. By the lord

  634. He has as it were

  635. Led them away

  636. In triumphant

  637. Procession

  638. Displaying them

  639. As defeated enemies

  640. In ancient times

  641. That would have

  642. Been the practice

  643. If a general

  644. Went out

  645. With his army

  646. Against enemies

  647. And overcame

  648. The enemies

  649. The Romans

  650. Especially

  651. Were very much

  652. This was very much

  653. Their practice

  654. Though it wasn't

  655. Confined to them

  656. If the general

  657. Came back

  658. If he had been

  659. Victorious in battle

  660. And he made his way

  661. Back to his homeland

  662. It was often

  663. The practice

  664. That those

  665. That he had defeated

  666. Or a great selection

  667. Of them anyway

  668. Would actually be dragged

  669. Usually behind his chariot

  670. Brought back

  671. To be put on display

  672. As defeated enemies

  673. So that everyone

  674. Could see

  675. That this general

  676. Had been successful

  677. And victorious

  678. In battle

  679. And these

  680. His enemies

  681. That had

  682. Fought against him

  683. Were now completely

  684. And utterly overcome

  685. They were chained

  686. They were made

  687. Slaves behind him

  688. That's

  689. Our Jesus

  690. That's the Lord

  691. In his ascension

  692. To glory

  693. That's the position

  694. He occupied

  695. That's what was put

  696. On display

  697. The principalities

  698. And powers

  699. As Paul calls them

  700. These great

  701. Spiritual forces

  702. Of darkness

  703. That held us

  704. Captive

  705. They were put

  706. To flight

  707. They were overcome

  708. By the Lord

  709. When you think

  710. Of Jesus

  711. Ascending up

  712. On high

  713. Here is what you find

  714. Spiritually

  715. And theologically

  716. True

  717. About that

  718. Great procession

  719. You think of Jesus

  720. Just imagine him

  721. Ascending up

  722. On high

  723. You couldn't see

  724. This necessarily

  725. For yourself

  726. Of course

  727. But spiritually

  728. And in the unseen world

  729. This is what was

  730. Taking place

  731. His enemies

  732. Were being dragged

  733. Behind his chariot

  734. Of triumph

  735. As he went

  736. To take his place

  737. At the right hand

  738. Of God

  739. And isn't that

  740. Why so often

  741. The psalmist

  742. Himself says

  743. In regard to

  744. God being

  745. His salvation

  746. And his salvation

  747. Being in God

  748. Whom shall I fear

  749. And that's why

  750. Paul in Romans 8

  751. Echoes that same

  752. Emphasis

  753. That same

  754. Sentiment as well

  755. Who shall separate us

  756. From the love of God

  757. In Christ Jesus

  758. Not even death

  759. He says

  760. Nor principalities

  761. Nor powers

  762. Things present

  763. Things to come

  764. Not even death

  765. Because death

  766. Has been overcome

  767. Death is dragged

  768. By Jesus

  769. As he rose

  770. From the grave

  771. As he ascended

  772. To glory

  773. There you see

  774. Death as the wages

  775. Of sin overcome

  776. And there is death

  777. Defeated

  778. For us

  779. Tonight

  780. Are you still

  781. Detached

  782. As it were

  783. From Jesus

  784. Is your life

  785. Tonight

  786. Lived by faith

  787. In him

  788. Through trusting

  789. In him

  790. Is your life

  791. Joined to his

  792. And is your life

  793. Joined to him

  794. In victory

  795. Over death

  796. And over all his

  797. And your enemies

  798. Is the triumph

  799. Of Jesus

  800. Your triumph

  801. Tonight

  802. Not unless

  803. Your trust

  804. Is in him

  805. Not unless

  806. You've put

  807. Your life

  808. In his hands

  809. Not unless

  810. You're joined

  811. To him

  812. In such a way

  813. That his victory

  814. Becomes your victory

  815. And his ascension

  816. Becomes your ascension

  817. When it comes

  818. That's the great privilege

  819. Friends we have

  820. This is what the gospel

  821. Sets out for us

  822. This is what we seek

  823. To emphasize

  824. In the preaching

  825. Of the gospel

  826. That we worship

  827. A victorious

  828. Savior

  829. An ascended

  830. Savior

  831. A savior

  832. Who has dragged

  833. Behind him

  834. Victoriously

  835. All that stood

  836. In enmity

  837. Against him

  838. And against his people

  839. You ascended

  840. On high

  841. Leading captivity

  842. Captive

  843. Remember how Paul

  844. Again put this

  845. Very similarly

  846. At least in

  847. His letter

  848. To the Colossian church

  849. The Colossians

  850. Were facing

  851. All kinds of

  852. False teaching

  853. That sought

  854. To draw them

  855. Away from

  856. Jesus being

  857. Fully complete

  858. And sufficient

  859. As their savior

  860. That they had

  861. Many things

  862. To do themselves

  863. By which they reached

  864. Step by step

  865. By their own efforts

  866. Towards final victory

  867. Well

  868. In the Colossians

  869. Paul in chapter 2

  870. Of Colossians

  871. In verses 13 to 15

  872. Was teaching them

  873. And is teaching us here

  874. As we read it

  875. Where he speaks of

  876. Being buried with him

  877. In baptism

  878. Raised with him

  879. Through faith

  880. In the powerful

  881. Working of God

  882. Who raised him

  883. From the dead

  884. And you

  885. Who were dead

  886. In your trespasses

  887. And in the uncircumcision

  888. Of your flesh

  889. God made alive

  890. Together

  891. Or in union

  892. With him

  893. Having forgiven us

  894. All trespasses

  895. By cancelling

  896. The record of debt

  897. That stood against us

  898. With its legal demands

  899. This he set aside

  900. Nailing it to his cross

  901. And then listen

  902. To what's next

  903. He disarmed

  904. The rulers

  905. And authorities

  906. And put them

  907. To unopened shame

  908. By triumphing

  909. Over them

  910. In him

  911. You see

  912. That's Psalm 68

  913. He put them

  914. To unopened shame

  915. These powers

  916. These spiritual forces

  917. Of darkness

  918. He put them

  919. To unopened shame

  920. Triumphing over them

  921. In the Lord

  922. And in the cross

  923. And his resurrection

  924. And all that followed

  925. Putting them on display

  926. And really that's part

  927. Of the gospel call

  928. As well isn't it

  929. That we emphasize

  930. Your need

  931. And my need

  932. To come to Jesus

  933. Because the Bible

  934. Presents us

  935. As in enmity

  936. Against God

  937. That's our natural

  938. State

  939. Our natural state

  940. Of mind

  941. Our natural bias

  942. Of soul

  943. That we are in enmity

  944. Against God

  945. But God has come

  946. To provide

  947. Reconciliation

  948. For us in Christ

  949. In other words

  950. When the Bible

  951. Calls us to come

  952. To Jesus

  953. When he gives us

  954. That invitation

  955. And call

  956. Come to me

  957. And I will give you rest

  958. What he's really saying

  959. Following the military language

  960. If you like

  961. Of this Psalm

  962. Is lay down

  963. Your arms

  964. Of rebellion

  965. Don't keep them up

  966. Against the Lord

  967. Lay down

  968. These arms

  969. Lay them at his feet

  970. And say

  971. Lord you

  972. Who defeated sin

  973. Who defeated the devil

  974. Who defeated

  975. These forces of darkness

  976. I give myself

  977. To you

  978. I lay down

  979. My rebellion

  980. I lay down

  981. My arms

  982. Of rebellion

  983. Against you

  984. Against you

  985. And I place them

  986. Here before you

  987. And I want you

  988. To rule over me

  989. And not them

  990. You led captivity captive

  991. He ascended on high

  992. Leading a host

  993. Of captives

  994. In your train

  995. The Lord's ascension

  996. In victory

  997. And how it's

  998. Very much related

  999. Practically

  1000. To our salvation

  1001. And our experience

  1002. Of salvation

  1003. And our comfort

  1004. Indeed

  1005. In salvation

  1006. That this is

  1007. Our God

  1008. Our Saviour

  1009. The Lord Jesus Christ

  1010. And then the Lord's

  1011. Distribution of gifts

  1012. To his church

1013. You notice what it then says

  1014. Receiving gifts

  1015. Among men

  1016. Even among the rebellious

  1017. That the Lord

  1018. May dwell there

  1019. There's a difference

  1020. Really

  1021. In

  1022. A difference of emphasis

  1023. In the Ephesian text

1024. To what you find here

  1025. In the psalm

  1026. The psalm says

  1027. You received gifts

  1028. Among men

  1029. Or for men

  1030. Whereas Ephesians

  1031. Speaks about

  1032. He gave gifts

  1033. To men

  1034. But there's

  1035. There's no

  1036. Contradiction there

  1037. What it's really saying

  1038. Is when you take

  1039. Both together

  1040. The Lord received

  1041. By virtue of

  1042. His resurrection

  1043. And ascension

  1044. He received gifts

  1045. In order to

  1046. Dispense them

  1047. To his church

1048. So he's giving them out

  1049. After receiving them

  1050. By way of

  1051. A reward

  1052. If you like

  1053. For

  1054. What he has done

  1055. And it's distribution

  1056. Dividing the spoil

  1057. Was a practice

  1058. When armies

  1059. Came back

  1060. Victorious

  1061. Very often

  1062. They brought back

  1063. The spoils

  1064. Of war

  1065. These would be

  1066. Distributed

  1067. Amongst the people

  1068. That they themselves

  1069. Belonged to

  1070. And different kinds

  1071. Of spoils

  1072. If you like

  1073. And in verses

  1074. 11 and 12

  1075. In the psalm

  1076. You find

  1077. The same thing

  1078. Emphasized there

  1079. Or similarly

  1080. There's the picture there

  1081. The Lord gives

  1082. The word

  1083. The women

  1084. Who announce

  1085. The news

  1086. Are a great host

  1087. The kings

  1088. Of the armies

  1089. They flee

  1090. They flee

  1091. The women

  1092. At home

  1093. Divide the spoil

  1094. And so on

  1095. You find the emphasis

  1096. There

  1097. What happened

  1098. Literally

  1099. As you think

  1100. About it

  1101. Spiritually

  1102. God

  1103. Jesus

  1104. Dispenses

  1105. The gifts

  1106. That

  1107. Ephesians 4

  1108. And let me just

  1109. Remind you

  1110. Around ourselves

  1111. Of what it says

  1112. Where Ephesians

  1113. There

  1114. Speaks about

  1115. The dispensing

  1116. Of the gifts

  1117. That Jesus

  1118. Has obtained

  1119. For his church

  1120. In saying

  1121. He ascended

  1122. He descended

  1123. First of all

  1124. Far above now

  1125. All heavens

  1126. He's ascended

  1127. And he gave

  1128. The apostles

  1129. The prophets

  1130. The evangelists

  1131. The pastors

  1132. And teachers

  1133. There are his gifts

  1134. That's what he bestows

  1135. In consequence

  1136. Of obtaining them

  1137. For him

  1138. By his death

  1139. And resurrection

  1140. And ascension

  1141. And

  1142. To equip

  1143. The saints

  1144. For the work

  1145. Of ministry

  1146. That work

  1147. Of ministry

  1148. Is not just

  1149. The ministry

  1150. Of the gospel

  1151. And preaching

  1152. The gospel

  1153. It's ministry

  1154. That's carried out

  1155. In a wider sense

  1156. By the Lord's people

  1157. And the Lord

  1158. Has gifted

  1159. His people

  1160. He's gifted

  1161. Especially as we'll see

  1162. The Holy Spirit

  1163. To his church

  1164. But all of this

  1165. Is so that

  1166. His church

  1167. Will grow

  1168. That we may

  1169. No longer be

  1170. Tossed to and fro

  1171. Carried about

  1172. By every wind

  1173. Of doctrine

  1174. And so on

  1175. Speaking the truth

  1176. In love

  1177. All of that passage

  1178. Really speaks

  1179. About God

  1180. Jesus dispensing

  1181. The gifts

  1182. To his church

  1183. To enable them

  1184. To grow

  1185. Towards

  1186. Final maturity

  1187. That's a great

  1188. Privilege

  1189. Tonight

  1190. You know

  1191. There are many

  1192. People throughout

  1193. The world

  1194. Tonight

  1195. Who would

  1196. Dearly love

  1197. To have a

  1198. Regular ministry

  1199. Of the gospel

  1200. Who would

  1201. Dearly love

  1202. To have

  1203. The bible

  1204. Explained

  1205. To them

  1206. Preached

  1207. But they don't

  1208. Have that

  1209. They don't have

  1210. Access to that

  1211. They're dependent

  1212. On books

  1213. Good books

  1214. And so on

  1215. They're dependent

  1216. On hearing

  1217. From time to time

  1218. Somebody coming

  1219. To explain

  1220. The bible

  1221. To them

  1222. And here we are

  1223. In this community

  1224. What a great

  1225. Privilege

  1226. There is

  1227. That there's

  1228. A free access

  1229. To the gospel

  1230. And to the preaching

  1231. Of the gospel

  1232. And to the worship

  1233. Of God

  1234. And yet all these

  1235. Pews are empty

  1236. Last week we heard

  1237. Derek Maxwell

  1238. Reverend Derek Maxwell

  1239. Speak about

  1240. Work of SGA

  1241. In Ukraine

  1242. And other places

  1243. In Central Europe

  1244. He spoke especially

  1245. About Ukraine

  1246. And the effects

  1247. Of the terrible war

  1248. That still rages

  1249. In Ukraine

1250. But one of the things

  1251. He did say

  1252. And make clear

  1253. And he was very

  1254. Moving in saying

  1255. So

  1256. How the church

  1257. Has grown

  1258. How people

  1259. Are pressing

  1260. Into places

  1261. Of worship

  1262. Because they see

  1263. That the devastation

  1264. Of this war

  1265. Has really taught

  1266. Them and shown

  1267. Them the things

  1268. Of this world

  1269. Are essentially

  1270. Valueless

  1271. Compared to

  1272. The salvation

  1273. And compared

  1274. To eternity

  1275. And these people

  1276. Are coming

  1277. And saying

  1278. Well

  1279. These things

  1280. That we've lost

  1281. They're earthly

  1282. Things

  1283. They're precious

  1284. Things

  1285. But they're gone

  1286. But we want

  1287. Something that

  1288. Cannot be taken

  1289. From us

  1290. We want the life

  1291. That God promises

  1292. In Jesus Christ

  1293. And there was a

  1294. Wonderful story

  1295. He told about

  1296. A count of

  1297. A seminary

  1298. Or college

  1299. There

  1300. Which had been

  1301. Hit by a Russian

  1302. Missile

  1303. And virtually

  1304. All destroyed

  1305. And gone up

  1306. In flames

  1307. Apart from

  1308. The library

  1309. Which held

  1310. Many irreplaceable

  1311. Books

  1312. That library

  1313. Was untouched

  1314. While the rest

  1315. Of the building

  1316. Went up in flames

  1317. Not only untouched

  1318. But he said

  1319. There wasn't even

  1320. The smell of smoke

1321. From any of the books

  1322. Contained in that library

  1323. Why was that?

  1324. Why would the Lord

  1325. Protect these books?

  1326. Well because

  1327. As he showed

  1328. In his next slide

  1329. That place

  1330. Has 880 students

  1331. Studying

  1332. The word

  1333. Of God

  1334. You see

  1335. When war comes

  1336. Terrible as it is

  1337. Devastating as it is

  1338. We'd never want

  1339. To see it

  1340. But one thing

  1341. The Lord

  1342. Teaches his people

  1343. Is

  1344. The value

  1345. Of what's precious

1346. And what is not precious

  1347. And the importance

  1348. Of things

  1349. That are his gift

  1350. To the church

  1351. Rather than

  1352. What we might say

  1353. Are our contribution

  1354. And these material

  1355. Things especially

  1356. You received

  1357. Gifts

  1358. For men

  1359. Or amongst men

  1360. Gifts purchased

  1361. Procured

  1362. Given out

  1363. By Jesus

  1364. And the one

  1365. Grand objective

  1366. You see

  1367. That's mentioned here

  1368. Above the rest

  1369. You see

  1370. He's mentioning

  1371. It's for the rebellious

  1372. Even for the rebellious

  1373. That's you and I

1374. But even for the likes

  1375. Of us

  1376. God has done this

  1377. Jesus has ascended

  1378. Up on high

  1379. For the benefit

  1380. Of rebellious

  1381. Sinners

  1382. Who come through

  1383. Salvation

  1384. To enjoy

  1385. The gifts

  1386. That God

  1387. Dispenses to his church

  1388. Does that not amaze

  1389. You tonight

  1390. Does it not amaze

  1391. You that

  1392. You and I

  1393. Who are naturally

  1394. At enmity with God

  1395. Are the very people

1396. The very kind of people

  1397. That he died for

1398. And rose from the dead for

1399. And ascended up to glory

  1400. For

1401. To dispense gifts to us

  1402. That we would enjoy

  1403. In this life

  1404. And enjoy throughout eternity

  1405. What a great God

  1406. How different

  1407. In his mercy

  1408. In his grace

  1409. In his forbearance

  1410. In his love

1411. To what you and I are

  1412. By nature ourselves

1413. This is the grand objective

  1414. That God has

  1415. That the Lord God

  1416. May dwell there

  1417. Or dwell amongst them

  1418. The presence of God

1419. The gift of the Holy Spirit

  1420. Through which God comes

  1421. To inhabit his church

  1422. That's the great objective

  1423. In the exaltation

  1424. And ascension

  1425. And ascension

  1426. Of Jesus

1427. Because after he had sat

  1428. At the right hand

  1429. Of God on high

  1430. As Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1431. Demonstrates for us

  1432. Verses 32 to 33

  1433. As Peter spoke

  1434. And preached

1435. As to what had happened

1436. In the coming of the Spirit

  1437. This Jesus

  1438. He says

  1439. Who was crucified

1440. He has poured this out

  1441. Which you now see

  1442. And hear

  1443. You see it's Jesus

  1444. Dispensing the gift

  1445. Of the Holy Spirit

  1446. Upon his church

  1447. In Eden

  1448. We were driven out

  1449. Of the garden

  1450. Where God dwelt

  1451. With us

  1452. Mankind

  1453. Rebelled against God

  1454. And rightly

  1455. And justly

  1456. God closed the gates

  1457. Of Eden

  1458. And said

  1459. No you can't

  1460. Go back there

  1461. And he placed

  1462. A flaming sword

  1463. And cherubim

  1464. To keep

  1465. The way it says

1466. Of the tree of life

1467. There was no going back

  1468. That way

1469. And it's even more amazing

  1470. That God provided

  1471. Another way

  1472. That he opened up

1473. A new and living way

1474. As Hebrews 10 puts it

1475. That is through the flesh

  1476. Through the person

  1477. Through the incarnation

  1478. The death

  1479. The resurrection

  1480. The ascension

  1481. Of Jesus

  1482. And where

  1483. You might say

  1484. That

  1485. On the gates

  1486. Of

  1487. Just imagine

  1488. On the gates

  1489. Of Eden

  1490. It's as if God

  1491. Had placed a sign

  1492. Saying

  1493. Here God

  1494. Once lived

  1495. But he's no longer

  1496. Here

  1497. He's gone

  1498. He's deserted

  1499. The place

  1500. And the man

  1501. The mankind

  1502. That lived here

  1503. With him

  1504. There now

  1505. Outside

  1506. But then

  1507. When you take that

  1508. Forward into the

  1509. New Testament

  1510. You find something

  1511. Amazing taking place

  1512. The crisis

  1513. Of Eden

  1514. Is answered

  1515. In the crisis

  1516. Of the cross

  1517. And the resurrection

  1518. And the ascension

  1519. Of the Lord

  1520. Because when you

  1521. Come to Calvary

  1522. It's Jesus

  1523. That's outside

  1524. It's Jesus

  1525. That's taking

  1526. The curse

  1527. It's Jesus

  1528. That's going to die

  1529. In the place

  1530. Of his people

  1531. And having risen

  1532. From the dead

  1533. And overcome

  1534. Death

  1535. And ascended

  1536. To glory

  1537. He dispenses

  1538. The gifts

  1539. That he purchased

  1540. To his people

  1541. And they are

  1542. Still being

  1543. Distributed

  1544. The gifts

  1545. That God

  1546. Gives

  1547. To his people

  1548. Not just

  1549. Endowments

  1550. The spirit

  1551. Of God

  1552. And so on

  1553. Of course

  1554. Central to it

  1555. But there are

  1556. Various gifts

  1557. That he gives

  1558. To his people

  1559. In the work

  1560. Of the gospel

  1561. In the work

  1562. Of the church

  1563. There are

  1564. Some that are

  1565. Given

  1566. Gifts

  1567. In order

  1568. To be

  1569. Elders

  1570. In the church

  1571. Gifts

  1572. To be

  1573. Deacons

  1574. In the church

  1575. Gifts

  1576. To work

  1577. Amongst

  1578. Young people

  1579. Gifts

  1580. To work

  1581. With older

  1582. People

  1583. All kinds

  1584. Of gifts

  1585. They all

  1586. Flow

  1587. From the

  1588. Ascended

  1589. Lord

  1590. They all

  1591. Come from

  1592. His

  1593. Wonderful

  1594. Position

  1595. At the

  1596. Right hand

  1597. Of the throne

  1598. On high

  1599. And they're

  1600. All preparing

  1601. Us

  1602. Those of us

  1603. Who trust

  1604. In the Lord

  1605. Tonight

  1606. They're preparing

  1607. Us

  1608. These gifts

  1609. Are part of

  1610. The way

  1611. God's

  1612. Preparing

  1613. Us

  1614. For our

  1615. Final state

  1616. In glory

  1617. With him

  1618. Remember how

  1619. It is with

  1620. Revelation

  1621. At the end

  1622. Of the Bible

  1623. The Revelation

    Revelation 21:1–4

  1624. Chapter 21

  1625. Verses 1

  1626. To 4

  1627. And I saw

  1628. A new heaven

  1629. And a new earth

  1630. For the first

  1631. Heaven and the

  1632. First earth

  1633. Had passed away

  1634. And the sea

  1635. Was no more

  1636. And I saw

  1637. The holy city

  1638. New Jerusalem

  1639. Coming down

  1640. Out of heaven

  1641. From God

  1642. Prepared as a bride

  1643. Adorned for her

  1644. Husband

  1645. And I heard

  1646. A loud voice

  1647. From the throne

  1648. Saying

  1649. Behold

  1650. A dwelling

  1651. Place of God

  1652. Is with man

  1653. He will dwell

  1654. With them

  1655. And they will

  1656. Be his people

  1657. And God

  1658. Himself

  1659. Will be with them

  1660. As their God

  1661. He will wipe

  1662. Away every tear

  1663. From their eyes

  1664. And death

  1665. Shall be no more

  1666. Neither shall

  1667. There be mourning

  1668. Nor crying

  1669. Nor pain

  1670. Anymore

  1671. For the former

  1672. Things

  1673. Have passed away

  1674. It's as if

  1675. Jesus is saying

  1676. To us tonight

  1677. Don't cry

  1678. Not that there's

  1679. Anything wrong

  1680. With weeping

  1681. And there are times

  1682. When we need

  1683. To weep

  1684. Weep

  1685. But we don't

  1686. Weep

  1687. In despair

  1688. When our trust

  1689. Is in him

  1690. Instead we say

  1691. And we hear him

  1692. Saying

  1693. Weep no more

  1694. For he has

  1695. Prevailed

  1696. He has ascended

  1697. On high

  1698. Everything we need

  1699. Is already in himself

  1700. As the psalmist

  1701. Said in psalm 23

  1702. Surely goodness

  1703. And mercy

  1704. Will follow me

  1705. All the days

  1706. Of my life

  1707. And I will dwell

  1708. In the house

  1709. Of the Lord

  1710. Forever

  1711. And as Jesus

  1712. Said in John 14

  1713. Where he spoke

  1714. About going to

  1715. Prepare a place

  1716. For them

  1717. Where he actually

  1718. Drew the mind

  1719. Of the disciples

  1720. As to where

  1721. He was heading

  1722. What would happen

  1723. After the cross

  1724. If I go

  1725. To prepare

  1726. A place for you

  1727. I will come again

  1728. And receive you

  1729. Unto myself

  1730. That where I am

  1731. There you

  1732. May also be

  1733. And the Lord

  1734. In his ascended

  1735. Glory tonight

  1736. Through the gospel

  1737. Is assuring you

  1738. And assuring me

  1739. Assuring us together

  1740. That when our trust

  1741. Is in him

  1742. When we live

  1743. Through faith in him

  1744. When we accept him

  1745. As he is

  1746. In all his fullness

  1747. For us as saviour

  1748. This is our future

  1749. What a glorious future

  1750. It is

  1751. Is it your future?

  1752. Is it my future?

  1753. Well your relationship

  1754. To Jesus

  1755. Is what establishes

  1756. That for you

  1757. Let's pray

  1758. We thank you

  1759. Lord tonight

  1760. That we

  1761. Know that you are

1762. Set at the right hand

  1763. Of the Father

  1764. On high

  1765. We thank you

  1766. Father

  1767. That you sent

  1768. The Son

  1769. Into the world

  1770. That he came

  1771. To give his life

  1772. A ransom

  1773. For his people

  1774. We thank you

  1775. That all he did

  1776. Was acceptable

  1777. In your holy sight

  1778. And that you come

  1779. To give to us

  1780. In your word

  1781. That record

  1782. Of his death

  1783. And resurrection

  1784. And ascension

  1785. To glory

  1786. And Lord we pray

  1787. That you would

  1788. Grant us faith

  1789. To anticipate

  1790. His return

1791. So that we may be

  1792. Ready to receive him

  1793. In his glory

  1794. When he comes

  1795. Make us ready

  1796. Lord we pray

  1797. For that great day

  1798. For your word

  1799. Encourages us

  1800. To prepare

  1801. By using the means

1802. That you have given us

1803. Help us to be thankful

  1804. As we look out

  1805. Over this fallen world

1806. As we see the devastation

  1807. Of this world

1808. As we see the enmity

  1809. In men's hearts

  1810. Being carried out

  1811. In atrocities

  1812. And terrible situations

  1813. Against each other

  1814. O Lord

  1815. Point us

  1816. We pray

  1817. To that great fact

  1818. That remains

  1819. That you are set

  1820. Above all these things

1821. That you preside over them

  1822. In your sovereign power

1823. And that you have ascended

1824. To the throne on high

  1825. To assure your people

1826. That you continue to reign

1827. And that your will is best

1828. Hear us we pray now

  1829. For Jesus' sake

  1830. Amen

  1831. Well let's conclude tonight

1832. By singing in Psalm 110

1833. It's one of the great

  1834. Messianic Psalms
