  1. Well, we begin our worship by singing to God's praise. We're going to sing in Psalm 139a.

  2. It's page 180 of the psalm book, Psalm 139a. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 10.

  3. O Lord, you have examined me. You know me through and through, my sitting, rising.

  4. All my thoughts afar are known to you. We'll sing from verse 1 to 10 to God's praise.

  5. O Lord, you have examined me. You know me through and through, my sitting, rising.

  6. All my thoughts afar are known to you.

  7. My going out and lying down are plain before your youth.

  8. Before I speak a word, O Lord, it is well known to you.

  9. You have me in the highly fold. You lay on me in your hand.

  10. Such knowledge is too wonderful, too high, too understand.

  11. Where can I from your safety?

  12. If I should be free, or from your presence go?

  13. If to the heavens you are there, or in the depths below,

  14. If I should take the wings of dawn, and fell beyond the sea,

  15. Then also you would be my guide, Your right and holding me.

  16. Let's bow our heads together in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  17. Our Father in heaven, as we come to worship you today,

  18. we thank you to be able to lift up our voices in singing to you and giving praise to you.

  19. We are reminded of your goodness to us in these words that we have sung,

  20. that you know us in every way, you know our every need,

  21. that you are there for us, Lord, no matter where we go in this world,

  22. that we have the promise of your presence.

  23. And we thank you that there's so much comfort in that,

  24. and that we would know, Lord, that whether we are here worshiping,

  25. whether we are in our homes, in schools or workplaces,

  26. wherever we go through the week, even when we travel to different places,

  27. that you have promised, Lord, that you will be there for us,

  28. that your right hand will hold us.

  29. And we do thank you, Lord, for every way that you bless us day by day.

  30. We thank you for all the things that we enjoy in life,

  31. the friendships we have, the families, our Sunday school and creche,

  32. and tweenies and explorers and toddler groups and all of these things that are there for our young people

  33. and the YF and the youth club that starts this week again.

  34. Lord, we pray for all our young people involved in these things,

  35. that there will be a sense of togetherness in it, sharing with one another,

  36. and above all knowing your goodness to us in it as well.

  37. And we thank you, Lord, that your word speaks to us in all of these things.

  38. And remind us of Jesus today, remind us of how much we need him

  39. and how much we are to love him, for he has loved us.

  40. And may your word be blessed to us in all that we do.

  41. So we ask it all with forgiveness of sin in Jesus' name. Amen.

  42. Now, before the young ones go out, I just want to say a wee word to you today.

  43. I'm sure many of you already know where I live.

  44. I stay up in Plasterfield, and it's a lovely part of the town to stay in.

  45. And we've got lovely neighbours up there.

  46. And very often we engage with our neighbours.

  47. Sometimes over the wall we'll speak to our neighbours,

  48. just say something to them in the passing.

  49. And on the whole, things are good.

  50. But the last couple of weeks our neighbours have,

  51. I don't know if it's the weather, or there's a hot sun or what it is,

  52. but they've been going a little bit crazy.

  53. They've been jumping our wall.

  54. And there's one little one, short legs.

  55. He's getting a little bit tubby as he gets a wee bit older,

  56. and he got stuck in the fence this week.

  57. And we had to go and help him.

  58. Now, I think you're thinking I'm talking about somebody.

  59. It's not.

  60. It's something.

  61. It's an animal.

  62. It's the lambs and the sheep next door that I'm talking about.

  63. Don't be mistaken that it's somebody else.

  64. But these neighbours, we enjoy seeing them out the back window and over the wall.

  65. But it's just they've been so lively the last wee while.

  66. And they've been coming into our, jumping our wall.

  67. It's amazing to think they're just little lambs,

  68. and yet they're jumping the wall and coming into our garden.

  69. Our sheepdog is hopeless.

  70. He just looks at them as if what we're supposed to do.

  71. But then we have to go and catch them and put them back over the fence,

  72. so they go back to their mothers.

  73. But they've also got a good shepherd who comes and checks on them as well.

  74. And it's a full-time job because the older they get, the more lively they get,

  75. and they get more adventurous.

  76. And I'm sure many of you had this experience in the last few weeks

  77. with lambing and keeping looking after lambs.

  78. You find lambs just going to strange places.

  79. They'll go and try and get into any situation.

  80. They'll go and try and climb through anything

  81. and find their way always into trouble so often.

  82. And they have to be helped back.

  83. They have to be rescued.

  84. And there's a lovely verse in Scripture that speaks about this.

  85. Last week we thought of how the good shepherd looks after his sheep.

  86. And even if there's one missing, he goes to find them.

  87. But here's another verse that reminds us of the care that the shepherd has,

  88. especially for his lambs.

  89. It says in Isaiah 40, verse 11, a chapter that speaks about God's comfort,

    Isaiah 40:11

  90. God's goodness to his people.

  91. And he says this,

  92. He tends his flock like a shepherd.

  93. He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.

  94. He gently leads those that have young.

  95. It's a beautiful verse that reminds us of the care that God gives to his people.

  96. We are like sheep.

  97. We're like lambs.

  98. We're always doing the wrong thing, going into the wrong places,

  99. and even getting stuck in stupid places.

  100. But we thank God that we have a shepherd,

  101. one who looks after us, who holds us in his arms, who carries us closely.

  102. And it's a wonderful thing to see a shepherd doing that for his lambs,

  103. picking them up, gathering them, helping them, taking them back to safety.

  104. And that's what we have in Jesus.

  105. One who looks after us all, and who cares for us in that wonderful way,

  106. and who loves us in such a wonderful way.

  107. So may we all know that tender care of the Lord as our shepherd.

  108. And we're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  109. Amen.

  110. Our Father, which art in heaven.

  111. Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come.

  112. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  113. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  114. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  115. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

  116. We'll again sing now to God's praise.

  117. We're going to sing in Psalm 115, in the Sing Psalms version, page 152.

  118. Psalm 115, we'll sing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  119. Lord, not to us, O not to us, to your name be the praise, because your love and faithfulness endure, O Lord, always.

  120. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 9 to God's praise.

  121. For not to us, O not to us, to your name be the praise, because your love and faithfulness endure, O Lord.

  122. Why do the nations question us?

  123. Where is their God they say?

  124. Her God, O Lord, always.

  125. Our God, O Lord, always.

  126. Their God, O Lord, always.

  127. Their God in heaven high, and over all, O sweet.

  128. Their gold and silver images are crafted carefully, but they have hearts which shall not speak,

  129. And God's which shall not see.

  130. Their noses have no sense of smell, Their ears can hear no sound.

  131. They have no feeling in their hands, Nor can they hope around.

  132. Although these idols do have throats, No word can they proclaim.

  133. Their big curse, their worshipers will all become like them.

  134. O house of Israel, place your trust, Upon the Lord alone.

  135. He is the mighty help and shield of all who are his own.

  136. Their jest small access, nai gives you the melis of the world.

  137. It's if God is with angels.

  138. Well, these two are the things that time they pray about.

  139. We will see you in a while.

  140. We will think that from this episode of the Old book for all.

  141. chapter 2, taking up our reading at verse 6. Habakkuk chapter 2, and reading from verse 6.

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  142. We're following on from where we finished off last week, where we were thinking of

  143. the righteous shall live by his faith, as we have in verse 4. Now we read on into verse 6.

  144. Shall not all these take up their taunt against him with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

  145. Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own, for how long, and loads himself with pledges?

  146. Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be

  147. spoil for them, because you have plundered many nations. All the remnant of the peoples shall

  148. plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities, and all who dwell in them.

  149. Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm.

  150. You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples. You have forfeited your life,

  151. for the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the woodwork respond.

  152. Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and founds a city on iniquity. Behold, it is not from the Lord

  153. of hosts, that people labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing. For the earth

  154. will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

  155. Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink. You pour out your wrath, and make them drunk in order to gaze

  156. at their nakedness. You will have your fill of shame instead of glory. Drink yourself, and show your

  157. uncircumcision. The cup in the Lord's right hand will come round to you, and utter shame will come

  158. upon your glory. The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, as will the destruction of the

  159. beasts that terrify them. For the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities, and to all

  160. who dwell in them. What prophet is an idol, when its maker has shaped it a metal image, a teacher of lies?

  161. For its maker trusts in his own creation, when he makes speechless idols. Woe to him who says to a

  162. wooden thing, awake, to a silent stone, arise. Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,

  163. and there is no breath at all in it. But the Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence

  164. before him. Amen. And may God bless that reading from his word. And again, unite your hearts in a word

  165. of prayer. Let us pray. Lord, our gracious God, as we continue in our worship at this time,

  166. we thank you for your word. And even in the challenges of reading it and trying to understand

  167. what you are saying to us, we recognize our need of the help of your spirit to be with us.

  168. As we open up your word, Lord, that you will give us understanding of how it applies to our own lives

  169. today. When we read of these many woes in this passage, we see so many things that are,

  170. we think maybe just for Habakkuk's day, but help us to see that your word is applicable

  171. today as it ever was. And we pray, Lord, that you will come in your power, that you will come in your

  172. glory, that your glory will fill the whole of this earth, that the world will be covered with the

  173. knowledge of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. And we thank you that your word goes out

  174. with power. We thank you for every way that you are reminding us again and again how your word is

  175. active and powerful to save. In the midst of all the chaos of our world, we thank you that as your

  176. word is preached, it is powerful. It is able to convict and to convert, as the psalmist says.

  177. And we pray, Lord, for your power of your spirit and your word to bring life, bring life to people and

  178. nations and this world as a whole, that we would see your restoring power, that we would see your

  179. power in bringing peace where there is war and peace where there is tragedy, peace into the hearts of

  180. this world and in the large-scale things. But also, Lord, when we think of our individual lives and

  181. our individual circumstances, that you are able to bring peace to us. The psalm that we sang in,

  182. Psalm 139 reminded us of that knowledge of us. It is so intimate and personal that we cannot sit or

  183. rise without your knowledge of us. And may we take comfort in that, even as we pray for others,

  184. that you are able to be with them where they are, that you are able to meet their needs more than we

  185. can, and that you are able to provide the grace that is always sufficient. And we do pray,

  186. Lord, in this day for those particularly who mourn and grieve at this time in our own congregation,

  187. Lord, in our own community. And far and wide, Lord, we pray for the comfort of your spirit to be with us.

  188. You are the great comforter who comes alongside. And Lord, we remember that in the midst of the world

  189. in which we live, that there are always these trials that will come our way. That there are always

  190. these days when we can, like Habakkuk, ask, how long, O Lord? But yet, O Lord, help us to live by faith.

  191. Help us to trust in you. Help us to lean upon you for all understanding and wisdom, for we do not have

  192. it of ourselves. And help us to be, O Lord, a people who pray your will be done, even when your will is

  193. hard and difficult for us to go through or to understand. We thank you, Lord, that in all things

  194. that you have a plan and a purpose. So, Lord, help us this day to commit ourselves into your care and

  195. into your keeping, and help us as we commit others to your care and keeping as well, that they would know

  196. your nearness. We think of servants of the church who have been called home even in this past week,

  197. and the families who mourn their passing. We remember the ministry of Neil Shaw, the various

  198. congregations he was ministered of, and so many sermons he preached. So many times we even hear his

  199. voice presenting the Psalms and marvel at the beauty of it. And we thank you, Lord, for your help,

  200. and strength to him over the years. And we thank you, Lord, for the great comfort and assurance

  201. that he has now come to rest in the Lord. We pray your blessing on his family at this time,

  202. that you will comfort and uphold and strengthen them. We remember, too, O Lord, the family of Reverend

  203. Ian Morrison. It seems just such a short time he was in ministry, and sometimes it is hard to

  204. understand these things. And yet, O Lord, we thank you for his love of Christ and his love of people.

  205. And we pray that even in his short ministry that there will still be a blessing from it,

  206. that people who heard and knew him, Lord, would be blessed by his ministry and continue to be blessed

  207. going on. We pray for the congregation there in Oban in their loss and that sense of dismay maybe at this

  208. time. We pray, Lord, that you will surround them and uphold them and be with them, journey with them

  209. through these days, Lord, and remind them that you are the Lord who is shepherd to his people.

  210. So, Lord, we commit families and friends of these men to you. And we pray, Lord, for your comfort over

  211. us as a people in these days ahead as well, Lord, to know your goodness to us. As we even think of

  212. the General Assembly starting tomorrow, we pray for the week ahead for all your people who gather there for

  213. the meetings in these coming days, Lord, we pray that it will be for your glory and your good, that we will

  214. not get distracted by different things, but that we will keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, that we will look to him

  215. who is the author, the perfecter of faith. We pray for Bob Ackroyd as he comes to conclude his time as

  216. moderator and Reverend Carl McLeod as he takes up that role. We pray for them and pray your blessing on

  217. them and your strength towards them. And we thank you in all things that we have you as our Lord and as

  218. our God, the one to call upon, the one who is near to help, the one who is able to bless. And we just

  219. commit ourselves into your hands now, O Lord, that you will draw near to us as we seek to draw near

  220. to you, as we ask all things confessing our sins anew. May you pardon us, Lord, for all our iniquities

  221. and cleanse us as we ask it in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, and for his glory. Amen.

  222. We'll again sing to God's praise, this time in Psalm 135 in the Scottish Psalter.

  223. Page 425.

  224. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 6.

  225. Psalm 135, page 425 at verse 1.

  226. Praise ye the Lord, the Lord's name praise his servants. Praise ye God, who stand in God's house

  227. and still

  228. Lord's name praise his servants.

  229. In the courts of our God, make abode. We'll sing from verse 1 to 6 to God's praise.

  230. Praise ye the Lord, the Lord's name praise his servants. Praise ye God, who stand in God's house,

  231. in the courts of our God, make abode. Praise ye the Lord, for he is good, and to him praise his servants sing.

  232. Sing praises to his King, because it is a pleasant thing.

  233. For Jacob to himself the Lord, give choose of his good pleasure,

  234. and he hath chosen Israel for his peculiar pleasure.

  235. Because I know as you in thee, the Lord is very great,

  236. and that our Lord above all gods in glory hath his seat.

  237. What thing so ever pleased the Lord, but in the heaven did he,

  238. and in the earth, the seas and all the places he had been.

  239. Amen.

  240. Amen.

  241. Amen.

  242. Amen.

  243. Amen.

  244. Amen.

  245. Amen.

  246. Well, we can turn back to our reading in Habakkuk chapter 2, and we're going to look at this

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  247. section from verse 6 down to verse 20.

  248. We come to our third part of our study in this book of Habakkuk, where we've been looking at

  249. different verses that we find throughout it that we can really call the nuggets of gold

  250. that you find in the midst of a challenging day for Habakkuk, and even in the midst of our own day,

  251. we see the relevance of these nuggets today as well.

  252. And so far, we've looked at two different verses as we found them.

  253. First of all, in chapter 1, we were looking at how, excuse me, we see God has a plan,

  254. even as Habakkuk was crying out, how long, O Lord, will you not hear me?

  255. Yet we see in verse 5 where he says, for I am doing a work in your days that you would

  256. not believe if told.

  257. We saw how there was this mysterious way that God was working, ways that we could not understand,

  258. even if he was to tell us.

  259. And Habakkuk was seeing this in his own day.

  260. He was going to see how God was going to work in a way that would seem to go completely

  261. against the way Habakkuk would want it to work, or the way the people would want it to

  262. work.

  263. And yet God is saying, I have a work.

  264. And this work was to bring a nation upon them, a nation of wicked people, the Chaldeans, or

  265. the Babylonians, as they're also known, a nation that was against God and against God's people,

  266. and who would bring much devastation.

  267. And yet how God was bringing them upon them with a purpose to judge and to restore.

  268. So then last week we were looking at, well, how are the people to live in those days and

  269. at that time when things were so difficult?

  270. Well, in the midst of the attack they were going to come under, they were to be a people

  271. who were to live by faith, as we saw in verse 4 of chapter 2.

  272. But the righteous shall live by his faith.

  273. Live by faith, waiting and watching for God in the midst of everything that was happening,

  274. and with a warning of a choice of how to live, either like the puffed up, as it says in verse

  275. 4, with no thought of God, or to live by faith.

  276. Well, today we come into another section here as Habakkuk and God are interacting with one

  277. another.

  278. And it's this section where you see this passage full of woes.

  279. And what makes a difference in our lives when we are to live by faith?

  280. When we think of the mysterious providence of God in different ways of life, what gives

  281. us hope in the midst of it all?

  282. Well, we come to this nugget that we're going to look at today, which is verse 14 of chapter

  283. 2.

  284. For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover

  285. the sea.

  286. This is the nugget that we're looking at today.

  287. This is the hope that we can have in the midst of all the chaos that's around us.

  288. It wasn't just a hope for Habakkuk and his day.

  289. It's a hope for ourselves today as well.

  290. That the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover

  291. the sea.

  292. But in order to see the wonder of this hope, we need to see it in the midst of the darkness

  293. of the day.

  294. And what we see is Habakkuk here telling us of these woes.

  295. Woe to him, it says throughout this section.

  296. And there's five of these woes.

  297. Imagine reading your own obituary.

  298. You say to yourself, that's not possible.

  299. In order to have an obituary, the person must have passed away.

  300. So how is it possible to read your own?

  301. Well, in 1867, it's said that the Swedish chemist, Alfred Noble, he awoke one morning,

  302. and as he opened up the newspaper, there he saw his own obituary.

  303. It's obviously shocked to see it.

  304. And as he read it, it just shook him.

  305. It said, Alfred Noble, the inventor of dynamite, who died yesterday, devised a way for more people

  306. to be killed in a war than ever before.

  307. And he died a rich man.

  308. There's different versions of maybe what was said.

  309. But it shook him.

  310. And what had happened was the newspaper reporter had made a mistake.

  311. It was Alfred's older brother who had passed away.

  312. But the reporter had heard it was Alfred, and he knew about Alfred.

  313. He was famous for the invention of dynamite.

  314. He'd obviously made a lot of money out of it.

  315. And this was the obituary that was written for him.

  316. And it got Alfred to think, is this the way that he would want to be remembered?

  317. Alfred, as developing a means of killing people and making a lot of money out of it.

  318. And so he sought to do good in the world.

  319. And he set up what is known as the Nobel Peace Prize,

  320. which gave a prize to people who were able to come up with ways of helping people

  321. instead of causing chaos and destruction.

  322. Well, what does an obituary have to do with what we're looking at today?

  323. Well, what you see as you go through this section, verse 6 down to verse 20,

  324. is this word, woe.

  325. And these five woes that are spoken of here,

  326. the word woe can also be translated alas.

  327. And what the word is used for so often is speaking of someone who is dead.

  328. For example, in 1 Kings chapter 13 and verse 30,

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  329. there there is an account of a man of God who died.

  330. And a friend came to bury him.

  331. And it says in verse 30,

  332. he laid the body in his own grave.

  333. And they mourned over him saying,

  334. alas, my brother.

  335. So that is the same word as we have here.

  336. Alas and woe are the same word.

  337. And the same word that we have here.

  338. Alas, my brother, his brother who had died.

  339. And so woe would normally be used in that sense of someone who had died.

  340. But the prophets like Habakkuk and others,

  341. they used these words, woe or alas,

  342. speaking to people who were alive.

  343. But because of their sin,

  344. because of the way that they were living their lives,

  345. as one writer says,

  346. they are already as good as dead

  347. because God has given his verdict against them.

  348. And so as we read these woes in this passage,

  349. yes, it is speaking to people who are alive,

  350. but it's almost like an obituary.

  351. Woe to you in the midst of all that you have done.

  352. You have died in your sin.

  353. And it reminds us of the way Paul writes to the church

  354. at Ephesus in Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  355. Look at the way he speaks to the people there.

  356. It's like an obituary.

  357. You were dead in the trespasses and sins.

  358. You are dead in your trespasses and sins.

  359. You are dead without Christ.

  360. And so there is an obituary for us.

  361. But as Paul goes on to say,

  362. but God, being rich and mercy,

  363. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  364. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  365. made us alive together with Christ.

  366. By grace you have been saved.

  367. And so in this passage,

  368. what we're going to see is these woes,

  369. the woes of condemnation.

  370. But in the midst of that,

  371. we're going to see a confirmation.

  372. Confirmation that God is one who still gives hope.

  373. And then thirdly,

  374. and just very briefly at the end,

  375. we'll see the comfort that that gives.

  376. And so the first thing we want to see is,

  377. as we think of the wonder of that verse 14,

  378. the earth being filled with the knowledge

  379. of the glory of the Lord

  380. as the waters covers the sea,

  381. we think first of the condemnation

  382. and these woes.

  383. Because in order to see the beauty of the gospel,

  384. we have to see the darkness of sin.

  385. And as we've noted already in Habakkuk's day,

  386. it was a dark time.

  387. That is where Habakkuk's cry came from in verse two.

  388. O Lord, how long shall I cry for help

  389. and you will not hear?

  390. Or cry to you violence

  391. and you will not save?

  392. There was devastation around him.

  393. Devastation nationally and internationally

  394. as we've seen.

  395. That is where the cry for help came from.

  396. And what makes ourselves feel a sense of injustice today?

  397. What makes you feel a sense of anger

  398. and long for God to change things?

  399. What makes you come to God with that cry of Habakkuk?

  400. How long will I cry for help?

  401. And you will not hear.

  402. It's likely that the things that make us angry

  403. and feel a sense of injustice

  404. are the very things that Habakkuk is telling us of here

  405. in these five woes.

  406. And what we are reading here is these woes,

  407. this word of condemnation,

  408. that we are dead in our sin,

  409. but that God is going to deal with these sins

  410. and the sinners behind them.

  411. The five ways,

  412. the five ways of condemnation that will come.

  413. It's about seeing the judgment of God

  414. on those who feel confident in their ways,

  415. confident in their sin,

  416. like the Babylonians would be,

  417. like other nations in the Old Testament

  418. who you read of,

  419. the Assyrians who came

  420. and tried to destroy God's people.

  421. But God is saying,

  422. I am at work,

  423. as we have seen earlier in chapter one,

  424. in ways that you would not believe

  425. if I was to tell you

  426. that God is still at work.

  427. And the condemnations that we see here

  428. are just like the ones

  429. that we can think of today

  430. in our own world.

  431. We think of the things that make us angry,

  432. the sin that we see around us,

  433. and we just want God to take action

  434. while he is saying,

  435. I will.

  436. Unless these people change their ways,

  437. then they are dead

  438. in their trespasses and sins.

  439. And what do you see?

  440. We see these five woes,

  441. and I just want to touch on them

  442. just briefly so we see what they are.

  443. In Habakkuk 2, verse 6 to 8,

    Habakkuk 2:6–8

  444. Woe to him who heaps up

  445. what is not his own.

  446. There's this woe against aggression.

  447. Habakkuk saw it in his day

  448. with all these nations invading

  449. and taking what was not their own.

  450. And they did it in a devastating way.

  451. And we think of the world

  452. in which we live today.

  453. And you think of the way people

  454. live their lives with no thought of God

  455. and who just take what is not their own

  456. and by any means.

  457. You see it in so many different ways,

  458. whether it's through times of war

  459. and invasion,

  460. or see it in just corporate greed.

  461. You see it in people,

  462. what we call modern-day slavery.

  463. We think slavery is something in the past.

  464. It's not.

  465. It is still there today.

  466. People who are modern-day slaves,

  467. they've paid pennies or nothing at all,

  468. led captive,

  469. away from families,

  470. away from friends,

  471. and put to use.

  472. Why?

  473. Because of people's way of aggression.

  474. People who want to heap up

  475. what is not their own.

  476. But God is saying,

  477. Woe to them.

  478. I will deal with them.

  479. Then in verse 9 to verse 11,

  480. Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house

  481. to set his nest on high.

  482. There is this woe against covetousness.

  483. People who just want to get richer.

  484. And again, just forget about anybody else.

  485. Just look after number one.

  486. No care or concern for others.

  487. It's just,

  488. How much can I amass in this world?

  489. Whether it's houses or cars or money,

  490. whatever it is.

  491. Well, God is saying,

  492. Woe.

  493. Woe to him who gets evil gain

  494. for his house to set his nest on high.

  495. Again, there's no thought for God.

  496. Verse 12 to verse 14.

  497. Woe to him who builds a town with blood

  498. and founds a city on iniquity.

  499. Again, you see here just this wicked way,

  500. this way of violence,

  501. this way of bloodshed,

  502. this way of gain

  503. by this acts of war and terror.

  504. The things that Habakkuk saw on his day

  505. that we see in our own day as well.

  506. And we can cry like Habakkuk,

  507. How long, O Lord?

  508. How long are you going to allow this to go on?

  509. But again, it's by living by faith

  510. in the God who works in mysterious ways

  511. that we see they will be judged.

  512. Woe to him who builds a town with blood.

  513. The wickedness of man's heart will be judged.

  514. They are as good as dead

  515. unless they repent and turn.

  516. And you see in verse 15 to verse 17,

  517. Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink.

  518. You pour out your wrath and make them drunk

  519. in order to gaze at their nakedness.

  520. Again, there's woe against humanity.

  521. The way people deal with other people.

  522. It's prevalent in Habakkuk's day

  523. and you think of it in our own day as well.

  524. You think of human trafficking.

  525. You think of people being put into lives

  526. of prostitution.

  527. You think of all these wicked things

  528. in our world where life is not precious.

  529. Where people are just a commodity to be used.

  530. But God is saying,

  531. Woe.

  532. Woe to them.

  533. I will not allow this to go undealt with.

  534. The Lord will deal with it.

  535. And then the fifth one.

  536. And you see in verse 19,

  537. Woe to him who says to a wooden thing,

  538. Awake!

  539. To a silent stone,

  540. Arise!

  541. Woe to idolatry!

  542. Woe to those who worship anything

  543. apart from God!

  544. Now you think of the first four

  545. and you say,

  546. Well, I don't fall into that category.

  547. That's not something

  548. that my heart is inclined to.

  549. But you can almost guarantee

  550. that we all fall into the trap

  551. of idolatry in different ways.

  552. Idols were common in Habakkuk's day.

  553. Every nation had their gods

  554. made of silver and gold

  555. and wood and stone and all sorts.

  556. And they were worshipped

  557. in the place of God.

  558. You think of when Moses

  559. was receiving the Ten Commandments

  560. on Mount Sinai.

  561. And the people were saying,

  562. Where is Moses?

  563. He's left us.

  564. He's gone.

  565. Let us make an idol to worship.

  566. And they made a golden calf.

  567. How quickly they changed.

  568. And how easy it is for us

  569. to put something

  570. in the place of God.

  571. Idolatry is worshipping

  572. or being more devoted

  573. to anything other than God,

  574. as someone put it.

  575. And we can have to guard

  576. our hearts against this.

  577. John Calvin once said,

  578. The human heart

  579. is a perpetual idol factory.

  580. We are making idols all the time.

  581. Things that we put

  582. in the place of God

  583. and worship more than God.

  584. But the Lord says,

  585. Woe.

  586. Now, Habakkuk, in his day,

  587. as the people were hearing this,

  588. they should have stopped

  589. in their tracks

  590. and started to think,

  591. What does this mean for me?

  592. And the same is true

  593. for ourselves as well.

  594. It should make us stop

  595. in our tracks

  596. and look at the world

  597. in which we live,

  598. but also look in our own hearts

  599. and ask,

  600. Are we part of the problem here?

  601. Is my heart away from God?

  602. Am I not trusting in God?

  603. As we saw the last time

  604. in chapter 2 there

  605. when we were thinking

  606. of the righteous

  607. shall live by faith.

  608. The other way was

  609. to go away from God

  610. and just to live

  611. puffed up in self.

  612. Is that the way

  613. that we are living?

  614. We have to guard ourselves

  615. because there is condemnation.

  616. There is death

  617. if we continue in sin.

  618. But what of hope then?

  619. Where does hope come

  620. in the midst of these woes?

  621. Well, that's the nugget

  622. that we see in verse 14.

  623. And that's the wonder

  624. of God to us,

  625. as his people.

  626. For the earth will be filled

  627. with the knowledge

  628. of the glory of the Lord

  629. as the waters cover the sea.

  630. In all that is wrong

  631. in the world,

  632. we are reminded here

  633. that God's great purpose

  634. is to make his glory known

  635. throughout the whole of creation.

  636. And we have to see this verse

  637. not just as one stand-alone verse here,

  638. but a confirmation

  639. of God's redemptive work

  640. throughout the Scriptures.

  641. because it's not the only place

  642. we read these words

  643. or words very similar to it.

  644. Numbers 14, verse 21.

    Numbers 14:21

  645. But truly, as I live,

  646. and as all the earth

  647. shall be filled

  648. with the glory of the Lord.

  649. God speaking there

  650. to his people.

  651. Again, there's the people

  652. in Moses' day

  653. who were in the wilderness

  654. and they were grumbling

  655. against God.

  656. They were moaning at him

  657. for taking them

  658. out of Egypt

  659. and into this wilderness

  660. where they saw it

  661. in their own eyes

  662. as suffering,

  663. almost like Habakkuk's cry,

  664. How long are we going

  665. to be here, Lord?

  666. But God is reminding them,

  667. I've got a purpose.

  668. I am taking you

  669. to a better place.

  670. I am leading you

  671. along the way.

  672. And he gives them

  673. this assurance

  674. as the earth shall be filled

  675. with the glory of the Lord.

  676. And then later on

  677. in Isaiah,

  678. Isaiah 11,

    Isaiah 11:1

  679. verse 1 and 2,

  680. there it says,

  681. There shall come forth

  682. a shoot from the stump

  683. of Jesse,

  684. and a branch from whose root

  685. shall bear fruit,

  686. and the Spirit of the Lord

  687. shall rest upon him,

  688. the Spirit of wisdom

  689. and understanding.

  690. And then later in verse 9,

  691. it says,

  692. They shall not hurt

  693. or destroy

  694. in all my holy mountain,

  695. for the earth

  696. shall be full

  697. of the knowledge

  698. of the Lord

  699. as the waters

  700. cover the sea.

  701. So again,

  702. Isaiah is speaking there

  703. of the wonder of this,

  704. the wonder of God

  705. and his glory.

  706. And who is Isaiah

  707. speaking about there

  708. in verse 1 and 2?

  709. There shall come forth

  710. a shoot from the stump

  711. of Jesse.

  712. He is speaking about

  713. the Messiah,

  714. the Lord Jesus,

  715. who is coming

  716. into this world.

  717. The only way

  718. our condemnation

  719. could be dealt with

  720. was for him

  721. to take it for us.

  722. As the hymn writer says,

  723. In man of sorrows,

  724. bearing shame

  725. and scoffing rude,

  726. in my place

  727. condemned,

  728. he stood,

  729. sealed my pardon

  730. with his blood.

  731. Hallelujah!

  732. What a Savior!

  733. So there is woe,

  734. there is death,

  735. there is condemnation,

  736. but then the glory

  737. of the Lord

  738. that will fill the earth

  739. is Christ himself.

  740. in my place

  741. condemned,

  742. he stood.

  743. And the earth

  744. will be filled

  745. with the knowledge

  746. of the glory

  747. of the Lord.

  748. Isn't it a marvelous

  749. thought that

  750. when you think of

  751. just what that means

  752. for us,

  753. Psalm 19 says,

  754. The heavens declare

  755. the glory of God.

  756. But there is so much more.

  757. The glory of God

  758. is so linked

  759. with the presence

  760. of God.

  761. And God's sending

  762. his word out

  763. across the lands,

  764. across the world,

  765. that it might bring

  766. healing to nations.

  767. And the wonder

  768. of how God did it.

  769. As Jesus himself

  770. came into this world

  771. in John 1, 14,

  772. what does it say there?

  773. The word became flesh

  774. and dwelt among us,

  775. and we have seen

  776. his glory.

  777. Glory as the only son

  778. from the Father,

  779. full of grace

  780. and truth.

  781. We have seen

  782. his glory.

  783. The glory of God

  784. filling

  785. the world

  786. with the knowledge

  787. of God.

  788. And Habakkuk

  789. was given a message

  790. for his people

  791. in those days,

  792. and it's the same

  793. in our ministry

  794. today as well,

  795. to make the glory

  796. of God known

  797. to the people

  798. around us.

  799. To know it ourselves

  800. first and foremost.

  801. And his word

  802. gives us

  803. this confirmation.

  804. That the glory

  805. of the Lord

  806. will fill

  807. this world

  808. as the waters

  809. cover the sea.

  810. There's a depth

  811. and a breadth

  812. to it.

  813. The knowledge

  814. of the glory

  815. of the Lord.

  816. We don't know

  817. but just a taste

  818. of it just now.

  819. but God

  820. is filling

  821. the world

  822. with more

  823. and more

  824. of it.

  825. It's amazing

  826. when you think

  827. of this image

  828. of just the whole

  829. world

  830. being filled

  831. with the glory

  832. of God.

  833. I was over

  834. on the west side

  835. on Thursday evening

  836. and as I was

  837. going over the mirror

  838. you could see

  839. that there was

  840. a thick mist,

  841. a thick fog

  842. on the west side.

  843. You could see it

  844. and then all of a sudden

  845. you're coming into it.

  846. And I was over there

  847. for a time outside

  848. and there was no

  849. getting away from it.

  850. It just surrounds you.

  851. It's all around you.

  852. And you can almost see it

  853. just rising on the ground

  854. and off the lochs.

  855. And you think just

  856. of that image

  857. in a sense

  858. of the whole world

  859. being filled

  860. with the glory,

  861. the knowledge

  862. of the glory of God.

  863. The Spirit of God

  864. moving

  865. throughout this world.

  866. The Spirit of God

  867. bringing life

  868. to people

  869. who are dead

  870. in a way

  871. that we're surrounded

  872. by this glory.

  873. There's no getting away

  874. from this glory.

  875. Romans,

  876. as Paul writes

  877. and he speaks

  878. of being left

  879. without excuse

  880. because the glory

  881. of God

  882. is seen

  883. all around us.

  884. No hiding place.

  885. It's awesome

  886. to behold that.

  887. That God

  888. is speaking

  889. to us.

  890. As we are dead

  891. in our trespasses

  892. and sins

  893. that we might be alive.

  894. How blessed

  895. Habakkuk was

  896. to have these nuggets

  897. of gold

  898. in the midst

  899. of everything going on.

  900. And how blessed

  901. we are

  902. that there is

  903. God's mysterious ways

  904. that we are to live

  905. by faith

  906. and that there is hope

  907. that the earth

  908. will be filled

  909. with the knowledge

  910. of the glory

  911. of the Lord.

  912. Again,

  913. Paul writing

  914. to the Corinthians

  915. says this,

  916. For God who said,

  917. Let light shine

  918. out of darkness

  919. has shone

  920. in our hearts

  921. to give the light

  922. of the knowledge

  923. of the glory

  924. of God

  925. in the face

  926. of Jesus Christ.

  927. He has made

  928. his glory known

  929. to us

  930. in the face

  931. of Jesus Christ.

  932. What a precious

  933. Savior we have.

  934. John Newton

  935. in his old age

  936. he loved his Savior

  937. and he loved

  938. to preach

  939. about his Savior.

  940. And he was

  941. old and frail

  942. and going blind

  943. but he still

  944. loved to preach.

  945. But he had an assistant

  946. who would come up

  947. with him

  948. to support him

  949. and to help him.

  950. And as he was

  951. preaching

  952. one Lord's Day

  953. he said

  954. to the congregation

  955. Jesus Christ

  956. is precious.

  957. And then he

  958. repeated it again

  959. Jesus Christ

  960. is precious.

  961. And the man

  962. who was with him

  963. supporting him

  964. he said

  965. you've already

  966. said that

  967. thinking he was

  968. just losing

  969. his way.

  970. And he said

  971. yes

  972. I've said it twice

  973. and I'm going

  974. to say it again

  975. and he lifted

  976. up his voice

  977. and bellowed out

  978. as loud as he could

  979. Jesus Christ

  980. is precious.

  981. That is the knowledge

  982. of the glory

  983. of God

  984. that Jesus Christ

  985. is precious.

  986. And is he precious

  987. to you?

  988. You when you realize

  989. that your obituary

  990. is here before you.

  991. You when you think

  992. you are dead

  993. in your trespasses

  994. and sins

  995. but by the grace

  996. of God

  997. you can be made

  998. alive.

  999. And isn't there

  1000. comfort

  1001. in that?

  1002. When we think

  1003. of the confirmation

  1004. that Habakkuk

  1005. has in the midst

1006. of all of the woes

  1007. that there is

  1008. this confirmation

  1009. that the earth

  1010. will be filled

  1011. with the knowledge

  1012. of the glory

  1013. of God.

  1014. Habakkuk

  1015. writes

  1016. with challenges

  1017. to the people

  1018. but these nuggets

  1019. they give comfort.

  1020. When you think

  1021. of sorrow

  1022. and sadness

  1023. when you think

  1024. of these woes

  1025. what better blessing

  1026. than to know

  1027. the great comfort

  1028. and comforter

  1029. that is God

  1030. and his word.

  1031. and when we think

  1032. of what his word

  1033. says

  1034. when we think

  1035. of the condemnation

  1036. that we are under

  1037. ourselves

  1038. because of sin

  1039. what does the glory

  1040. of God

  1041. mean for us?

  1042. I want to finish

  1043. with these words

  1044. of Romans 8.

  1045. What does it say

  1046. in verse 1?

  1047. There is therefore

  1048. now

  1049. no condemnation

  1050. for those

  1051. who are in

  1052. Christ Jesus.

  1053. There is no

  1054. condemnation

  1055. when you are

  1056. in Christ Jesus.

  1057. The woe

  1058. has been dealt

  1059. with

  1060. because in my

  1061. place

  1062. condemned

  1063. he stood.

  1064. And what does

  1065. Romans 8

  1066. go on

  1067. to conclude

  1068. with?

  1069. From verse 35

  1070. it says

  1071. who shall

  1072. separate us

  1073. from the love

  1074. of Christ?

  1075. Shall

  1076. tribulation

  1077. or distress

  1078. or persecution

  1079. or famine

  1080. or nakedness

  1081. or danger

  1082. or sword?

  1083. All of these

  1084. things that we see

  1085. in the woes

  1086. of this passage

  1087. as it is written

  1088. for your sake

  1089. we are being

  1090. killed

  1091. all the day

  1092. long.

  1093. We are regarded

  1094. as sheep

  1095. to be slaughtered.

  1096. No

  1097. in all

  1098. these things

  1099. we are more

  1100. than conquerors

  1101. through him

  1102. who loved us.

  1103. For I am sure

  1104. that neither

  1105. death

  1106. nor life

  1107. nor angels

  1108. nor rulers

  1109. nor things

  1110. present

  1111. nor things

  1112. to come

  1113. nor powers

  1114. nor height

  1115. nor depth

  1116. nor anything

  1117. else in all

  1118. creation

  1119. will be able

  1120. to separate us

  1121. from the love

  1122. of God

  1123. in Christ

  1124. Jesus

  1125. our Lord.

  1126. Nothing

  1127. can separate

  1128. us

  1129. when we know

  1130. that there is

  1131. no condemnation

  1132. when we are

  1133. in Christ

  1134. Jesus.

  1135. Christ

  1136. Jesus

  1137. is a

  1138. fulfillment

  1139. of this

  1140. verse.

  1141. The earth

  1142. will be filled

  1143. with the knowledge

  1144. of the glory

  1145. of the Lord

  1146. as the waters

  1147. covered

  1148. the sea.

  1149. The glory

  1150. that has been

  1151. made known

  1152. in the face

  1153. of Jesus

  1154. Christ.

  1155. We have

  1156. these woes

  1157. these words

  1158. of death

  1159. really

  1160. to make us

  1161. see the wonder

  1162. and the beauty

  1163. of the gospel

  1164. to see the

  1165. darkness

  1166. of sin

  1167. and to see

  1168. the only way

  1169. out

  1170. is to know

  1171. the glory

  1172. of the Lord

  1173. and the glory

  1174. that is

  1175. Jesus Christ

  1176. a precious

  1177. Savior.

  1178. Do you

  1179. know

  1180. this

  1181. comfort?

  1182. Well come

  1183. and put

  1184. your trust

  1185. in him.

  1186. Be in

  1187. Christ

  1188. Jesus

  1189. because then

  1190. there is

  1191. no

  1192. condemnation.

  1193. Let us

  1194. pray.

  1195. Our

  1196. Father in

  1197. heaven

  1198. we do

  1199. praise you

  1200. for your

  1201. wonders

  1202. of your

  1203. grace

  1204. and the

  1205. wonder

  1206. of your

  1207. word

  1208. and your

  1209. glory

  1210. that goes

  1211. throughout

  1212. the world

  1213. and we

  1214. pray

  1215. Lord

  1216. to know

  1217. more

  1218. of it

  1219. that we

  1220. will

  1221. see

  1222. your

  1223. glory

  1224. and

  1225. know

  1226. the

  1227. wonder

  1228. of

  1229. salvation

  1230. through

  1231. our

  1232. Lord

  1233. Jesus

  1234. Christ

  1235. and faith

  1236. in him.

  1237. We ask it

  1238. Lord

  1239. confessing

  1240. our sins

  1241. before you

  1242. that we

  1243. might not

  1244. be condemned

  1245. but know

  1246. the wonder

  1247. of no

  1248. condemnation

  1249. for those

  1250. who are

  1251. in Christ

  1252. Jesus

  1253. as we

  1254. ask it

  1255. in his

  1256. name.

  1257. Amen.

  1258. We'll

  1259. conclude by

  1260. singing

  1261. to God's

  1262. praise in

  1263. Psalm 57

  1264. Psalm 57

  1265. from

  1266. verse 9

  1267. down

  1268. to the

  1269. end.

  1270. Among

  1271. the

  1272. nations

  1273. Lord

  1274. to you

  1275. I will

  1276. give

  1277. praise

  1278. among

  1279. the

  1280. peoples

  1281. of

  1282. the

  1283. earth

  1284. my

  1285. songs

  1286. of

  1287. you

  1288. I'll

  1289. raise

  1290. great

  1291. is

  1292. your

  1293. steadfast

  1294. love

  1295. which

  1296. reaches

  1297. to

  1298. the

  1299. sky

  1300. your

  1301. constant

  1302. faith

  1303. on

  1304. S.O.

  1305. Lord

  1306. extends

  1307. to

  1308. heaven

  1309. high

  1310. above

  1311. the

  1312. highest

  1313. heaven

  1314. so

  1315. God

  1316. exalted

  1317. be

  1318. and

  1319. over

  1320. all

  1321. the

  1322. earth

  1323. below

  1324. display

  1325. your

  1326. majesty.

  1327. We'll

  1328. sing

  1329. these

  1330. three

  1331. stanzas

  1332. to

  1333. God's

  1334. praise.

  1335. Among

  1336. the

  1337. nations

  1338. Lord

  1339. to

  1340. you

  1341. I

  1342. will

  1343. give

  1344. praise

  1345. among

  1346. the

  1347. peoples

  1348. of

  1349. the

  1350. earth

  1351. my

  1352. songs

  1353. of

  1354. you

  1355. I

  1356. raise

  1357. great

  1358. is

  1359. your

  1360. steadfast

  1361. love

  1362. which

  1363. reaches

  1364. to

  1365. the

  1366. sky

  1367. your

  1368. constant

  1369. love

  1370. and

  1371. faithfulness

  1372. and

  1373. faithfulness

  1374. O

  1375. Lord

  1376. extends

  1377. to

  1378. heaven

  1379. high

  1380. above

  1381. the

  1382. highest

  1383. hands

  1384. O

  1385. God

  1386. exalted

  1387. thee

  1388. and

  1389. over

  1390. the

  1391. earth

  1392. may

  1393. know

  1394. display

  1395. your

  1396. majesty

  1397. after

  1398. the

  1399. benediction

1400. i'll go to the main door

1401. we'll close with the benediction

1402. now may grace mercy and peace from God father son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore

  1403. amen
