  1. Worship of God singing in Psalm 145, Psalm 145, the second version on page 444.

  2. We're singing verses 1 to 6.

  3. The tune is Warrington.

  4. O Lord, thou art my God and King, thee will I magnify and praise.

  5. I will thee bless and gladly sing unto thy holy name always.

  6. Each day I rise, I will thee bless and praise thy name time without end.

  7. Much to be praised and great God is.

  8. His greatness none can comprehend.

  9. We're singing verses 1 to 6 to God's praise.

  10. We stand to sing.

  11. Until my heart will fly and praise.

  12. I will thee bless and gladly sing unto thy holy name always.

  13. Each day I rise, I will thee bless and praise thy name time without end.

  14. But surely grace and great God is.

  15. His greatness none can comprehend.

  16. His will ever miss and goodbye.

  17. The mighty act.

  18. I will sing of the glorious grace

  19. The mighty act so done by thee

  20. I will sing all the glorious grace

  21. And honour all thy majesty

  22. To thy wondrous works I will report

  23. By them the might shall be extolled

  24. Of all thy dreadful hearts, O Lord

  25. And I thy goodness will unfold

  26. Please be seated.

  27. Well, we now come to what's a very pleasant baptism, an adult baptism.

  28. We don't very often see that in our own context, but we still believe, of course, in the baptism of adults as well.

  29. And Ian Don Campbell has come forward asking to take communion for the first time, and that's a wonderful privilege for us to have him come forward in that way with that desire.

  30. But not having been baptized previously, it's necessary that baptism precedes taking communion in the order of things spiritually.

  31. And so we've come to this point, and you yourselves today are witnesses, and also not just witnesses, but participants in the sense that you will be pledging silently your support for Ian Don as he comes now to be baptized.

  32. So first of all, I'm going to ask you all to stand, and please remain standing until the baptism is over.

  33. Ian Don, if you come forward, please.

  34. I'll ask you some questions, and then I'll ask you to kneel there after the questions.

  35. Right.

  36. Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, revealed in Scripture as the only true God and your God?

  37. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and men?

  38. Do you now pledge to live a holy life as God will enable you by His grace to His glory?

  39. Thank you.

  40. Just be a thank you.

  41. First of all, we're going to engage in a word of prayer, asking the Lord to bless the ordinance.

  42. Lord our God, we thank you for the sacraments you have given your church.

  43. We know it's our privilege, Lord, always to participate and to be observers of baptism and of the Lord's Supper.

  44. And we thank you today for the privilege that we are here to witness both and to participate in that appropriate way in the support we give to Ian Don,

  45. and also in the way we participate in the Lord's Supper.

  46. Bless these two as we pray, and bless now this water to its own sacred use as we use it in baptism.

  47. We pray, O Lord, that Ian Don will know your blessing as he comes to offer himself to be baptized.

  48. We thank you for the way that you have led him and the way you have brought him to know yourself.

  49. And we thank you for the way that that encourages us as a congregation, that your Holy Spirit is active and at work in our midst.

  50. We pray for him in the days to come, as he now comes to be baptized and as he will take communion with the rest of your people here today.

  51. Lord, bless it to his own soul and bless it to ours also, that we may reflect upon it in days to come

  52. and give our thanks to the God of all grace and comfort.

  53. Receive our thanks now, we pray, and cleanse us from all our sin, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  54. I am Don Campbell, I baptize you in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, one God.

  55. May God bless you and keep you. May God make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.

  56. May God lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

  57. Another word of prayer just to finish off.

  58. Lord, bless what we have done now in your name,

  59. and grant that you would continue to bless us through the remainder of this service.

  60. We ask that you would forgive our sins as we confess them.

  61. And in relation to what we see in baptism, Lord, we confess our need of being cleansed and washed

  62. in the blood of Christ by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  63. And so, receive our thanks now, and all we ask is in Jesus' name. Amen.

  64. Bevan Calum Orlis-Smith will now read the word of God from Matthew 27, beginning at verse 27.

  65. Well, we turn to God's word as we have it in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 27, taking up our reading there at verse 27.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  66. You find it around page 1005, Matthew 27 at verse 27.

  67. And then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him.

  68. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand.

  69. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews.

  70. And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.

  71. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

  72. As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name.

  73. They compelled this man to carry his cross.

  74. And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means place of a skull, they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall.

  75. But when he tasted it, he would not drink it.

  76. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.

  77. Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.

  78. And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

  79. Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.

  80. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying,

  81. You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself.

  82. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

  83. So also the chief priests, so the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,

  84. He saved others, he cannot save himself.

  85. He is the King of Israel.

  86. Let him come down from the cross, and we will believe in him.

  87. He trusts in God.

  88. Let God deliver him now if he desires him.

  89. For he said, I am the Son of God.

  90. And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

  91. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

  92. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying,

  93. Eli, Eli, Lema, Sapatani.

  94. And some of the bystanders hearing it said, This man is calling Elijah.

  95. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine,

  96. and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.

  97. But the other said, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.

  98. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

  99. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,

  100. and the earth shook and the rocks were split.

  101. The tombs also were opened,

  102. and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

  103. And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection,

  104. they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

  105. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus,

  106. saw the earthquake and what took place,

  107. they were filled with awe and said,

  108. Truly, this was the Son of God.

  109. Amen.

  110. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  111. Let's engage now in prayer.

  112. We'll call upon the Lord in prayer.

  113. Amen.

  114. Amen.

  115. Amen.

  116. Almighty God, we thank you for this day and for all that takes place in it,

  117. here in our witness,

  118. both in the sacraments and in the word being preached.

  119. Help us in our worship, we pray,

  120. to know that we draw near to God

  121. with the promise that he will draw near to us.

  122. We thank you again for this day that you have set apart from the beginning of the creation,

  123. a day that is set apart to be holy to the Lord,

  124. and a day in which we find so many ordinances and privileges given to us.

  125. We thank you for the gospel that draws us to you.

  126. And we thank you for the way that you use it in bringing people to know yourself.

  127. And we ask, O Lord, that today we will know your blessing

  128. as we come once more around your word and under your word.

  129. Help us to know that the things that we confess about you are truly sealed to our souls.

  130. And bless us each one as we appear before you.

  131. You know our thoughts, you know our hearts,

  132. you know everything about us already,

  133. and yet you would have us to come and pray to you and confess our sin and seek your cleansing.

  134. Lord, bless us, we pray, as a congregation of your people.

  135. And may this time of celebrating the Lord's Supper be used to our strengthening

  136. and to our confirmation as a congregation,

  137. that you take us as your people and that we take you as our God.

  138. We ask, Lord, that your blessing will follow us

  139. in all that we seek to do in your name in this community.

  140. And we do ask, O Lord, that you would accompany your word especially

  141. and the witness of your people with the power of your Holy Spirit.

  142. We thank you, Lord, for that Spirit that you take,

  143. where you take the things of Christ and show them to us.

  144. We thank you that you have your Holy Spirit to dwell in the hearts of your people,

  145. that they are united together in the bonds of fellowship through him.

  146. And we thank you today that we can come and expect that the Lord will take those things of his word and sacrament

  147. and make them precious to us and make them effective in our experience

  148. to bless us and to sanctify us further in the things of God.

  149. We pray your blessing for all gatherings of your people today,

  150. wherever they gather throughout the world.

  151. Lord, we pray for them again and ask that you would make us conscious

  152. that we belong to such a great number that no one can number but the Lord himself.

  153. We thank you that we are members of that church that extends even to the heaven itself,

  154. to those who have gone to be home with the Lord,

  155. and yet who are bound in spirit by that same Spirit of God,

  156. with those of us here who remain in this world.

  157. We ask now your blessing to follow all that is being done in your name

  158. and to guide us and to keep us in mind and body through these things.

  159. Uphold us, we pray, with your Spirit and enable us to rejoice in your presence,

  160. enable us to know more of that joy that you give to your people,

  161. that joy that is truly, even in this life, filled with an anticipation of glory.

  162. We ask your blessing, Lord, to be with those who can't be here today with us.

  163. We know that there are some who used to be here

  164. and who used to partake of the Lord's Supper

  165. and now no longer can do so through ill health or other reasons.

  166. We pray for them, and we pray, Lord, that you would bless to them

  167. all that they have already partaken of in the course of their life.

  168. And we ask that you would be pleased to draw near to them,

  169. to assure them at this time that they are your people indeed, that you remember them.

  170. We ask your blessing now to continue with us here,

  171. and as we turn again to your word, to hear its teaching and to sing your praises,

  172. Lord, help us to do so with the joy of the Lord in our hearts,

  173. and seeking his glory and his praise in all that we do.

  174. Hear us, we pray now, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  175. Well, our next singing is going to be in Gaelic.

  176. It's customary for us to have a Gaelic singing when we come together for the Lord's Communion.

  177. And the singing is from Psalm 146.

  178. You'll find it on the back page of the bulletin.

  179. Verses 5 and 6, and the English equivalent there as well.

  180. These two verses, we remain seated for the Gaelic singing.

  181. The Gaelic singing is from Psalm 146.

  182. The Gaelic singing is from Psalm 146.

  183. The Gaelic singing is from Psalm 146.

  184. They pleasured to have a great creative Werk of Peace.

  185. For this verse, we sing famous music beginning to make slow rap,

  186. Thank you.

  187. Thank you.

  188. Thank you.

  189. Thank you.

  190. Thank you.

  191. Thank you.

  192. Thank you.

  193. Thank you.

  194. Thank you.

  195. Thank you.

  196. Thank you.

  197. Thank you.

  198. Thank you.

  199. Thank you.

  200. Thank you.

  201. Thank you.

  202. Thank you.

  203. Thank you.

  204. Thank you.

  205. Thank you.

  206. Thank you.

  207. Thank you.

  208. Thank you.

  209. Thank you.

  210. Thank you.

  211. Thank you.

  212. Thank you.

  213. What is the

  214. of that parish of that

  215. care?

  216. record that? What did it mean to them? What would you have thought? Here you are, one of those

  217. sitting down and watching him there. What would this have felt like? What would your mind have

  218. actually thought of what was happening? You'd be asking, what's happening? This is midday and

  219. it's getting dark. And it lasted for three hours. Why? What's it about? What's remarkable

  220. about the event that this has to take place? Well, it's symbolic, isn't it? It's symbolic of

  221. the spiritual darkness that Jesus is experiencing in his heart, in his soul, as he carries the sin

  222. of his people, as he bears the punishment, as he bears what is due to them for their sins, as he

  223. enters into the darkness of soul. We'll see it in a minute when we come to the expression of

  224. Jesus on the cross.

  225. Ila, Ila, lama sabachthani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? But that is what

  226. this is symbolic of, as the creation itself actually comes to darkness. Remember what

  227. Jesus, how he described himself in John's gospel, I am the light of the world.

  228. And whoever walks after me shall not abide in darkness. And here he is, the light of the world,

  229. experiencing darkness, as it were being turned into darkness. The darkness of his soul,

  230. as it's symbolized by the darkness of the creation. It's as somebody put it,

  231. the creation itself cannot bear to look upon its creator in the state that he is in, in the

  232. sufferings that he's enduring. He's the creator. He's the one who created light. He's the one who

  233. said, let there be light as it was in the beginning. And yet here is that creator himself

  234. entering into the darkness of his soul, about to expire on the cross. And the creation hides its face.

  235. Jesus cannot bear to look upon such a terrible thing, such a mysterious thing, such an awful thing,

  236. as the darkness being experienced by Jesus.

  237. You cast your mind back to the time when Israel were slaves in Egypt. And when the plagues, as they

  238. recorded for us there in Exodus, when the plagues came upon the land one after another, one of these

  239. plagues was the plague of darkness. And we read in Genesis there that there was darkness over the

  240. whole of the land of Egypt. But Israel had light in their dwellings. They lived in that part of the

  241. land called Goshen, which itself is the Hebrew word for light. And while there was darkness over all of

  242. the land of Egypt, the people of Israel had light in their dwellings. They were set apart from the

  243. Egyptians. The Lord was looking after them when it was dark elsewhere. They had the fullness of light

  244. in God's own miraculous way of providing that for them. There is no such thing at Calvary.

  245. You don't read here, there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour, but there was light

  246. where Jesus was. There was light at Calvary. There was light around the cross. There wasn't.

  247. light at Calvary. It was enveloped in darkness just like the rest of the land.

  248. What a Savior. What a love. What an event. What an experience for you sitting there with the rest of

  249. those who kept watch. And all of a sudden it gets dark and the gloom sets in. And you think to yourself,

  250. why is this happening? There must be something remarkable here for this to happen at the height

  251. of noonday, for this to become dark. And so it is remarkable. It's nothing less than the Son of God

  252. having taken our human nature, expiring on the cross, coming towards that time of his death on the cross.

  253. Now that's what you remember in the Lord's Supper today. That's what you remember as you remember Christ

  254. in his death. You remember how the pain of his soul and the pain in his body was pain to the maximum,

  255. the pain due to you for your sins. And you also experience the creation in darkness

  256. when you expect it to be light. And you know that that is symbolic of his agony and darkness of soul.

  257. That's what you would see. Other things as well, but we'll confine it to those two for the moment.

  258. And then secondly, what would you hear? What things would you actually hear spoken up or in conversation

  259. during those times, during that time that you sat here watching Jesus? Well, the first thing you would

  260. hear would be mocking words, words of mockery and derision. Verses 39 to 44. You can see there how

  261. those who were passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, you who would destroy the temple

  262. and rebuild it in three days, save yourself. If you are the son of God, come down from the cross.

  263. So also the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him saying, he saved others. He cannot

  264. save himself. He is the king of Israel. Let him come down now from the cross and we will believe in him.

  265. He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now if he desires him. For he said, I am the son of God.

  266. This is what you would hear. Derision and mocking thrown in the face of Jesus by those here who

  267. actually made mockery of him at that time. But you see, as we said last night, sometimes the gospel

  268. writers present the truth to us by way of even the mocking of Christ's enemies. Everything they're

  269. saying there is actually true of him. He is the king. He is the king of the universe. He is the one

  270. who holds all things in the power of his own hands. And just like it is in Luke chapter 15,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  271. the scribes and Pharisees then mocked him saying, this man receives sinners and eats with them.

  272. What a great testimony to the truth of who Jesus is. That's exactly who he is. He receives sinners and

  273. eats with them. He enters into fellowship with them. That's what you're experiencing here today

  274. at the Lord's Supper. This man, this Jesus, he's derided here. He's mocked here. But the words of

  275. mocking that mock him as the king, as the son of God, actually convey the truth about him. And as you read

  276. these, as we said last night, you realize that everything being said here is actually true of

  277. him, though they're used as terms of mocking on the occasion in which they were spoken.

  278. And of course, in verse 42, he saved others. He cannot save himself. What remarkable words these are.

  279. He saved others. Yes, he saved others. They're using that by way of mocking, but it's the truth about him.

  280. He is the Savior. He cannot save himself. Now think about that. Could he have saved himself?

  281. Well, there's a sense in which you might say yes if he came down from the cross, but what would that

  282. mean? Even if it had been possible, it would have meant that you and I would not have been saved.

  283. So from that point of view, he could not save himself. He would not save himself. He would not

  284. actually bypass the sufferings involved in the cross because that's what he came to do. That's what he

  285. came to finish. That's what he came to accomplish. This was the devil, as we saw last night. This was the

  286. devil's attempt to deflect Jesus and divert him from the path of obedience to the Father that he was on.

  287. He said,

  288. "'If you are the Son of God, all of these kingdoms of the world and their glory I will give you.

  289. All you have to do is fall down and worship me.'" And Jesus says, "'Get hence Satan.'"

  290. and the same when Peter tried to take him aside

  291. and say this shall not happen to you

  292. Jesus responded get behind me Satan

  293. an attempt to deflect Jesus to divert him

  294. from the path that he was on

  295. yes he is the king of Israel

  296. but for our sake he cannot come down from the cross

  297. for our sake he will not come down from the cross

  298. for our sake he will not save himself

  299. so that we can be saved

  300. and he remained true to his obedient self

  301. all the way through his agonies on the cross

  302. until it was accomplished

  303. until it was done

  304. you can see Matthew 26

  305. chapter 26 and verse 53 there

  306. 26 and verse 53

  307. where Peter had drawn his sword

  308. and tried to defend Jesus from those who had come

  309. with Judas Iscariot to apprehend him

  310. and take him into custody

  311. put your sword back into its place

  312. for all who take the sword will perish by the sword

  313. do you think that I cannot appeal now to my father

  314. and he will at once send me more than 12 legions of angels

  315. but how then would the scriptures be fulfilled

  316. that it must be so

  317. you see there is Jesus saying

  318. I could call on multitudes of angels

  319. to come to my rescue

  320. to come to help me

  321. but how then would the scripture be fulfilled

  322. the scripture that prophesied

  323. that he would come and die for his people

  324. that's what he was committed to

  325. and if you go to John's gospel

  326. you'll find that in the garden of Gethsemane

  327. as he was coming out of the garden

  328. and this incident took place

  329. Jesus said

  330. the cup which my father has given me to drink

  331. shall I not drink it

  332. what was that cup?

  333. that was the cup of his agony

  334. the cup of damnation

  335. the cup of what is due to you and I for our sins

  336. and what he's saying now is

  337. I will drink it

  338. I'll take it to the very last drop

  339. whatever suffering it means for me

  340. shall I not drink it

  341. that's what he did

  342. you would have heard mocking words

  343. but words that conveyed

  344. the truth about Jesus

  345. and the commitment of Jesus to die

  346. the death he came to die

  347. you would have heard mocking words

  348. you would have heard also pleading words

  349. for that you need to go to

  350. Luke's account of the crucifixion

  351. chapter 23 verses 40 to 43

  352. and of course that means

  353. the cry of the thief from the cross

  354. both of these robbers, malefactors

  355. we read here in Matthew

  356. Matthew actually were involved

  357. first of all in deriding him

  358. but as you listened on to what was happening

  359. as you sit there with those who are observing the cross

  360. you'd have heard something happening

  361. you'd have heard some words

  362. that really filled you with amazement

  363. here is one of those two thieves

  364. and he has stopped deriding

  365. has stopped mocking

  366. he has stopped casting things against Jesus

  367. and he's come to ask him now

  368. something specific

  369. Lord remember me

  370. when you come into your kingdom

  371. and then you'd have heard

  372. the response of Jesus to that

  373. truly I say to you

  374. today

  375. you will be with me in paradise

  376. what is happening

  377. here you are

  378. with these people

  379. listening to what's going on

  380. hearing these words

  381. and all of a sudden

  382. you hear this conversation

  383. this thief breaking out

  384. with a request to Jesus

  385. to remember him

  386. and Jesus not only hearing

  387. but replying and saying

  388. today you're going to be with me in paradise

  389. this man's going to be in paradise

  390. what do you mean this man's going to be in paradise

  391. what's he being crucified for

  392. he's being crucified for his crimes

  393. he's being crucified as a malefactor

  394. as a robber

  395. as somebody who deserves

  396. actually to be dead

  397. and to be put to death

  398. for his crimes

  399. and instead you find Jesus saying

  400. you're going to be with me today

  401. in paradise

  402. I hear you are today

  403. at the Lord's table

  404. and

  405. you're imagining yourself

  406. sitting there with the rest of them

  407. what would you have thought

  408. what would you have thought

  409. of Jesus himself

  410. hearing these words

  411. in response

  412. to the thief's pleading

  413. pleading words

  414. responded to by Jesus

  415. with comforting words

  416. today

  417. you'll be with me in paradise

  418. you'll be in heaven with me

  419. you see that's why

  420. you find these things

  421. that are spoken to be

  422. so meaningful to yourself

  423. because

  424. you have asked the Lord

  425. to remember you

  426. haven't you

  427. at some point

  428. in your spiritual journey

  429. you've come to the Lord

  430. and

  431. sought that he would remember you

  432. that he would bless you

  433. that he would receive you

  434. that he would forgive your sins

  435. that he would have you

  436. as one of his own disciples

  437. that he would save you

  438. and that change

  439. that took place

  440. in the thief

  441. is the change

  442. that has taken place

  443. in you

  444. as you remember the Lord

  445. in his death today

  446. Psalm 139

    Psalms 139:17–18

  447. verses 17 to 18

  448. remember the psalmist

  449. and that psalmist

  450. just taken up in awe

  451. at the knowledge

  452. that God has of him

  453. that he sees through

  454. into the very depth

  455. of his soul

  456. the words that he speaks

  457. even before he's spoken

  458. them

  459. God knows them

  460. God is found everywhere

  461. God's looking in

  462. upon him

  463. and measuring

  464. and sifting

  465. his thoughts even

  466. then he comes

  467. to say

  468. how precious

  469. are your thoughts

  470. to me

  471. oh God

  472. how precious

  473. are your thoughts

  474. to me

  475. what did he mean

  476. Lord thank you

  477. that you are mindful

  478. of me

  479. that you are mindful

  480. of me always

  481. that you are mindful

  482. of me when I forget you

  483. that you are mindful

  484. of you even when I

  485. sometimes have questions

  486. and even doubtings

  487. you never

  488. you never cease

  489. to be mindful

  490. of me

  491. isn't that a precious

  492. thing to you today

  493. as you come to remember

  494. the Lord and his death

  495. at the Lord's supper

  496. to know that God

  497. is mindful of you

  498. that he has you

  499. in his mind

  500. that he never lets you

  501. out of his mind

  502. that you are so

  503. precious to him

  504. that he never

  505. forgets you

  506. that not for a moment

  507. does he stop

  508. being mindful

  509. of you

  510. that's what you

  511. heard

  512. that's what you

  513. would have heard

  514. here this

  515. interaction of the

  516. thief

  517. and Jesus

  518. and that's

  519. essentially

  520. what's inside it

  521. but thirdly

  522. finally

  523. not only

  524. would you have

  525. heard mocking

  526. words

  527. and you

  528. would have

  529. heard pleading

  530. words answered

  531. by Jesus

  532. you would also

  533. have heard

  534. the Lord's

  535. own words

  536. all the statements

  537. that he made

  538. while he was

  539. on the cross

  540. but there's one

  541. really that

  542. stands out

  543. above the rest

  544. and it's there

  545. in verse 46

  546. about the ninth

  547. hour

  548. Jesus cried out

  549. with a loud

  550. voice

  551. that is my

  552. God

  553. my God

  554. why have you

  555. forsaken me

  556. I think we can

  557. safely say

  558. these are the

  559. most amazing

  560. words

  561. ever uttered

  562. they are what

  563. Martin Luther

  564. calls

  565. behold

  566. behold

  567. God

  568. forsaken

  569. by God

  570. why

  571. hast

  572. thou

  573. forsaken

  574. me

  575. and if you

  576. imagine

  577. an exclamation

  578. mark there

  579. at the end

  580. rather than a

  581. question

  582. you'll have

  583. a better idea

  584. then of just

  585. the depth

  586. of these words

  587. but we cannot

  588. measure them

  589. we cannot

  590. properly enter

  591. into the depths

  592. of them

  593. he alone

  594. knows

  595. the depth

  596. of meaning

  597. in these words

  598. my God

  599. my God

  600. why have you

  601. forsaken me

  602. forsakenness

  603. by God

  604. is the essence

  605. of death

  606. we think of death

  607. perhaps more

  608. in physical terms

  609. when people die

  610. when we leave

  611. this world

  612. separation of our

  613. soul from body

  614. and that is an

  615. aspect of death

  616. undoubtedly

  617. but the essence

  618. of death

  619. as was shown

  620. even by the

  621. exclusion of

  622. Adam and Eve

  623. from the garden

  624. as they were

  625. driven out

  626. by God

  627. as the gates

  628. were closed

  629. behind them

  630. the essence

  631. of death

  632. is nothing

  633. less than

  634. separation

  635. from God

  636. and that's why

  637. eternal death

  638. the death

  639. that is in hell

  640. is separation

  641. from God

  642. forever

  643. without

  644. ever ending

  645. and that's

  646. not a neutral

  647. thing

  648. to experience

  649. separation

  650. from God

  651. in the wrath

  652. of God

  653. being inflicted

  654. upon any

  655. person

  656. is the most

  657. painful thing

  658. imaginable

  659. to be cut off

  660. from life

  661. to experience

  662. everlasting

  663. death

  664. with no

  665. prospect of

  666. hope

  667. or mitigation

  668. salvation

  669. now Jesus

  670. didn't die

  671. for his own

  672. sins

  673. but the

  674. people whose

  675. sins were

  676. laid upon

  677. him

  678. deserved

  679. this death

  680. and he

  681. took that

  682. death

  683. in their

  684. place

  685. and you

  686. remember him

  687. today as

  688. one who

  689. took that

  690. death

  691. instead of

  692. you

  693. who willingly

  694. went to

  695. the cross

  696. and died

  697. this death

  698. that involved

  699. separation

  700. from God

  701. nothing less

  702. than

  703. actual

  704. damnation

  705. experienced

  706. by him

  707. in his

  708. own soul

  709. now we

  710. can't

  711. really go

  712. beyond saying

  713. this is just

  714. a mystery

  715. how can we

  716. possibly try

  717. to begin

  718. explaining

  719. what was

  720. actually involved

  721. in the son

  722. of God

  723. in our

  724. nature

  725. experiencing

  726. the hell

  727. that we

  728. deserved

  729. in his own

  730. experience

  731. in his

  732. own soul

  733. let's

  734. just

  735. leave it

  736. there

  737. but think

  738. about it

  739. and the

  740. reality

  741. of it

  742. think about

  743. it as you

  744. watch him

  745. there as you

  746. hear these

  747. words

  748. why have

  749. you forsaken

  750. my God

  751. my God

  752. why have

  753. you forsaken

  754. me

  755. well of course

  756. they didn't

  757. understand

  758. they thought

  759. this man

  760. was calling

  761. for Elijah

  762. some said

  763. well let's

  764. wait and see

  765. whether Elijah

  766. will come

  767. and save

  768. him

  769. then Jesus

  770. cried out

  771. again with

  772. a loud

  773. voice

  774. and yielded

  775. up his

  776. spirit

  777. that itself

  778. is something

  779. amazing to

  780. hear

  781. not only the

  782. cry my God

  783. my God

  784. why have

  785. you forsaken

  786. me

  787. but then it

  788. comes to

  789. this

  790. he yields

  791. up his

  792. spirit

  793. he breathes

  794. his last

  795. as it puts

  796. elsewhere

  797. he hands

  798. over his

  799. spirit

  800. his soul

  801. to his

  802. father

  803. for keeping

  804. for safe

  805. custody

  806. how does he

  807. do it

  808. he does it

  809. in a loud

  810. voice

  811. what is that

  812. saying to you

  813. it's saying

  814. that here

  815. is the

  816. champion

  817. of death

  818. here is

  819. somebody

  820. who has

  821. power over

  822. death

  823. here is

  824. somebody

  825. who comes

  826. to die

  827. not in

  828. the weakness

  829. that we

  830. usually associate

  831. with death

  832. but with a

  833. loud voice

  834. showing that

  835. he is still

  836. the powerful

  837. one

  838. the son

  839. of God

  840. he comes

  841. to yield

  842. up his

  843. spirit

  844. remarkable

  845. things

  846. that you

  847. have seen

  848. as you

  849. sit there

  850. at the

  851. cross

  852. you've

  853. seen

  854. Jesus

  855. refusing

  856. this

  857. drink

  858. you've

  859. seen

  860. the day

  861. turned

  862. to

  863. darkness

  864. and you've

  865. heard

  866. remarkable

  867. things

  868. you've

  869. heard

  870. words

  871. of

  872. mocking

  873. that

  874. actually

  875. convey

  876. the truth

  877. about

  878. Jesus

  879. you've

  880. heard

  881. pleading

  882. words

  883. from one

  884. of the

  885. thieves

  886. and the

  887. words of

  888. Jesus

  889. in reply

  890. and you've

  891. heard

  892. this cry

  893. of Jesus

  894. himself

  895. and all

  896. of that

  897. is precious

  898. to you

  899. today

  900. because it's

  901. part of what

  902. you remember

  903. as you

  904. remember

  905. the Lord's

  906. death

  907. until he

  908. comes

  909. amen

  910. let's

  911. pray

  912. gracious

  913. father

  914. we

  915. thank you

  916. today

  917. that your

  918. word

  919. conveys to

  920. us the

  921. truth

  922. that is so

  923. much greater

  924. than

  925. ourselves

  926. truth

  927. that our

  928. puny minds

  929. cannot fully

  930. take in

  931. but we

  932. thank you

  933. that it is

  934. the truth

  935. nevertheless

  936. that you

  937. came into

  938. this world

  939. to give

  940. yourself a

  941. ransom for

  942. your people

  943. we thank you

  944. for the

  945. truth of

  946. your death

  947. and for

  948. the way

  949. that it

  950. brought about

  951. the salvation

  952. of your

  953. people

  954. we thank

  955. you Lord

  956. for all

  957. that is

  958. entailed

  959. in your

  960. death on

  961. the cross

  962. and make

  963. it more

  964. and more

  965. precious to

  966. us as

  967. time goes

  968. by

  969. Lord

  970. enable us

  971. today as

  972. we remember

  973. you in

  974. the Lord's

  975. supper

  976. to do so

  977. with

  978. gratefulness

  979. thankfulness

  980. dependence

  981. all that we

  982. should be

  983. in ourselves

  984. as we

  985. relate to

  986. that death

  987. of our

  988. Lord

  989. receive our

  990. thanks we

  991. pray now

  992. and pardon

  993. our sin

  994. for Jesus

  995. sake

  996. Amen

  997. now we're

  998. going to sing

  999. some verses

  1000. during the

  1001. singing

  1002. the young

  1003. ones will

  1004. come in

  1005. they'll take

  1006. their place

  1007. up on the

  1008. gallery

  1009. so we're

  1010. singing

  1011. from Psalm

  1012. 22

  1013. and page

  1014. 25

  1015. the tune is

  1016. Saldo

  1017. page 25

  1018. verses 1

  1019. to 8

  1020. my God

  1021. my God

  1022. oh why

  1023. have you

  1024. forsaken

  1025. and abandoned

  1026. me

  1027. why are you

  1028. far from

  1029. giving help

  1030. from listening

  1031. to my

  1032. anguished

  1033. plea

  1034. so on

  1035. through

  1036. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:1–8

  1037. verses 1

  1038. to 8

  1039. so on

  1040. Rod

  1041. Thank you.

  1042. Thank you.

  1043. Thank you.

  1044. Thank you.

  1045. Thank you.

  1046. Thank you.

  1047. Thank you.

  1048. Thank you.

  1049. Thank you.

  1050. Thank you.

  1051. Thank you.

  1052. Thank you.

  1053. Thank you.

  1054. Thank you.

  1055. Thank you.

  1056. Thank you.

1057. Now, at this point in our service, we come to give directions to those who come to

1058. the Lord's table, those who have the privilege and the responsibility and the right indeed

1059. to come to take communion at this time.

1060. I'm going to read some verses, just a verses of a poem.

1061. I think it might actually be a hymn, although I couldn't find any writer for it, so I'm

1062. not sure if you know who it is.

1063. You can please let me know.

1064. But the poem, the verses are as follows.

1065. I sought thee, weeping high and low.

  1066. I found thee not.

  1067. I did not know.

  1068. I was a sinner.

1069. Even so, I missed thee for my Savior.

1070. Until upon the cross I saw my Lord, who died to meet the law.

  1071. That man had broken.

1072. Then I saw my sin, and then my Savior.

1073. Be thou to me, my Lord, my guide, my friend, yea, everything beside.

1074. But first, last, best, whate'er betide, be thou to me, my Savior.

1075. And I think these verses, each of them, encapsulate something of our experience as we come to know

1076. the Lord, because more often than not, we're like those in the first verse, they're seeking

  1077. answers to life's questions.

  1078. I did not know I was a sinner.

1079. I sought thee, weeping high and low, distressed about his own life, but not necessarily knowing

  1080. where the answer lay.

1081. And I'm sure for some of us, at least, that's how it was.

1082. And so you come to the Lord's table today knowing that you did seek answers to life's big

1083. questions, but maybe for some time you didn't find an answer until you came to know the answer

  1084. in Jesus himself.

1085. And as he says there, I do not know, did not know I was a sinner, even so I miss thee for

  1086. my Savior.

1087. There's something deep within the heart of each one of us that knows we lack something

1088. that we can't provide ourselves.

1089. And that makes us ask questions.

1090. Where do I get this?

1091. Where can I get satisfaction?

  1092. And you have come.

1093. The Lord's table is for those who have come to know satisfaction in Christ.

1094. Not an answer to every question, but certainly an answer to the most important ones.

1095. What must I do to be saved?

1096. The second verse there, until upon the cross I saw my Lord who died to meet the law that

  1097. man had broken.

1098. Then I saw my sin and then my Savior.

1099. They come to the Lord's table today because you've come to know the Lord.

1100. You've moved on from the questions.

1101. You've come to know the Lord himself as the great answer to all of life's questions.

1102. And it's when you came to know the Lord and the kind of death that he died as you came

1103. to know the scriptures, that he died to meet the law, the demands of the law, the death

1104. as we saw that he died.

1105. Then I saw my sin and then my Savior.

1106. The people who come to the Lord's table don't think they're very good in themselves.

  1107. They're very opposite.

1108. And as they look at Jesus, and as you look at Jesus today portrayed in the Lord's Supper,

1109. as you see him portrayed in the death that he died as these elements of bread and wine

1110. set out for us, so you came to see your sin in the light of Christ's sufferings.

1111. And I'm sure it's the case for most of us that the place where we most clearly see our

1112. sin and know our sin for what it is, is as you look to the cross.

1113. And as you see, that's what my sin did.

1114. That's what my sin deserved.

1115. As you see your Savior, so you see your sin.

1116. As you see your sin, so you see your Savior.

1117. And you come today to express your trust in him by taking communion and being with his people

  1118. at the Lord's Supper.

  1119. They sought answers.

1120. They came to know Jesus.

1121. Thirdly, they value Jesus above all else.

1122. Be thou to me, my Lord, my guide, my friend, yea, everything beside.

1123. But first, last, best, whatever betide, be thou to me, my Savior.

1124. They are the people who come and have the right to come to the Lord's table.

1125. They can say about their lives they're far from perfect.

1126. They can say there's many things about them they still actually wish were not true about them.

1127. But the one thing they will not deny is that Jesus is special.

1128. And that he's special above everyone else.

1129. Whate'er betide, my first, last, best, be thou to me, my Savior.

1130. And that's what you're saying of him today.

  1131. That's why you're here.

1132. Because he is the best.

  1133. He's the very best.

1134. He's one you know you can't improve on.

1135. Nor would you want to.

1136. Because there's no need for it.

1137. And that's what's leaving you here today.

1138. You've found your answer to life's big questions in Jesus.

1139. And now you love him.

  1140. With all your heart.

1141. And you want to love him even more.

  1142. As time goes on.

1143. So now we come to sing once more from Psalm 118.

1144. And then we'll come to administer the Lord's Supper.

  1145. Psalm 118, page 398.

  1146. And at verse 15.

1147. Singing to a tune, Coleshill, verses 15 to 19.

1148. In dwellings of the righteous is heard the melody of joy and health.

1149. The Lord's right hand doth ever valiantly.

1150. The right hand of the mighty Lord exalted is on high.

1151. The right hand of the mighty Lord doth ever valiantly.

1152. And so on to the end of verse 19 to God's praise.

1153. In dwellings of the righteous is heard the melody of joy and death.

1154. The right hand of the mighty Lord exalted is on high.

1155. The right hand of the mighty Lord doth ever valiantly.

1156. I shall not die but live and shall the words or not discover.

1157. The Lord of the just I said so, but not to death give no word.

1158. O set ye open unto me the gates of righteousness,

1159. then will I enter into them, and I the Lord will bless.

1160. We now read from 1 Corinthians chapter 11, what we refer to as the warrant for our celebration of the Lord's Supper.

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1161. 1 Corinthians 11 at verse 23,

1162. For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you,

1163. that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread.

1164. And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,

1165. This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

1166. In the same way also he took the cup after supper, saying,

1167. This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.

1168. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,

1169. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes, and so on.

1170. And we follow that example, the Lord himself set us,

1171. by giving thanks to the Lord.

  1172. So let's pray.

  1173. Lord, our gracious God,

1174. we know it is our privilege once again to be here at the Lord's Supper.

1175. We know it is our privilege once again to remember the Lord and his death.

1176. We know it is our privilege to call upon you and give you thanks, which we do,

1177. for all that is set out before us here,

  1178. representing your death,

1179. and being a sign and seal to your people of your love for them.

1180. We bless you today, Lord, for this opportunity.

1181. Help us to maximize it for ourselves.

1182. Help us to come believing, trusting,

1183. being sure, O Lord, that you will do as you have promised,

1184. and that your word will not return to you void,

1185. that you will bless the ordinances that you yourself have set forth

1186. and have sanctified for your people.

1187. We pray, O Lord, as we take this bread and this cup today,

1188. that you would sanctify these elements,

1189. so that they be means by which we ourselves

1190. can feed upon Christ crucified and the benefits of his death.

1191. We give thanks, Lord, that they represent to us

1192. what we cannot put into words.

1193. And we pray that as we partake of them once again,

1194. that we would be conscious, O Lord,

1195. of how undeserving we are

1196. of anything that is represented here,

1197. how deserving we are of the very opposite.

1198. And we pray that our love for you might be increased,

1199. that our faith may be deepened,

1200. that our hope of eternal life in heaven

  1201. might itself be enlarged.

1202. Bless us, Lord, we pray now,

1203. and grant that your blessing will be with us throughout this day

1204. and in all of these things receive our thanks,

1205. cleanse us from our sin.

  1206. For Jesus' sake.

  1207. Amen.

1208. Just before we take the Lord's Supper,

1209. just a few words very briefly,

1210. because I want to focus upon you taking the supper

1211. and us taking it together.

  1212. It's called the Lord's Supper.

1213. It is a supper spiritually.

1214. The things that are here physically

1215. are representations of what is true spiritually.

1216. So as you take the bread and take the wine,

1217. spiritually, you're actually feeding upon Christ.

1218. And it's significant that the things Jesus chose

1219. to represent Him in the Lord's Supper

  1220. are very simple things,

  1221. bread and wine,

1222. common, ordinary things in everyday use.

  1223. But that's the Lord's choice

1224. so that we would focus

1225. not on the things themselves,

1226. but on what they represent.

1227. That they represent to us

  1228. Christ in His death.

1229. Indeed, the confession of faith reminds us

1230. in the passage that sets out

1231. how these elements are not changed

1232. in essence from what they are.

1233. They don't become the body of Christ

1234. or the blood of Christ.

  1235. They represent that.

1236. They sign their signs and seals

1237. of that to His people,

1238. but they remain bread and wine.

  1239. Ordinary things

1240. to convey a deep spiritual reality.

1241. And what the confession says

  1242. is that by faith,

1243. God's people feed upon Christ crucified

1244. and all the benefits of His death.

1245. That is what you feed upon.

1246. That is what by faith,

1247. today you're drawing into your soul.

1248. And as the confession says,

1249. as surely as you see outwardly

1250. these elements of bread and wine,

  1251. so spiritually,

1252. you see and feed upon Christ crucified

1253. and all the benefits of His death.

1254. What a marvelous point that is in itself,

1255. that God would take something

  1256. that's of ordinary use

  1257. and make it extraordinary

  1258. for His people.

1259. And it helps us in the simplicity

  1260. of the supper

1261. to remember that its simplicity itself

  1262. conveys wonderful,

  1263. deep,

  1264. deep,

  1265. abiding,

  1266. spiritual truth.

  1267. And of course,

  1268. this passage also says

1269. that we take it together.

  1270. The apostle was concerned

  1271. to teach the Corinthians

  1272. and to deliver them

  1273. from the abuses

  1274. of the Lord's Supper

1275. that they had engaged in

1276. in the city of Corinth,

1277. in the church in Corinth.

  1278. So he says,

  1279. So then,

  1280. my brothers,

1281. when you come together to eat,

  1282. wait for one another.

  1283. In other words,

  1284. the Lord's Supper

  1285. is a supper

  1286. we take together.

  1287. And our togetherness

  1288. is important.

  1289. It expresses the unity

  1290. we have in Christ.

  1291. It expresses

  1292. the wonderful bonds

  1293. that unite us together

1294. as we are united to Christ.

  1295. You don't take the Lord's Supper

  1296. on your own,

  1297. though it's significant

  1298. for you individually.

  1299. We take it together.

  1300. We wait

  1301. for one another.

  1302. And that unity

  1303. is expressed

  1304. at the Lord's Supper

  1305. just as it is.

  1306. In reality,

  1307. a spiritual unity,

  1308. so it's outwardly expressed

  1309. by being together.

  1310. Wait, he says,

  1311. for one another.

  1312. We come

  1313. as believers

  1314. united together.

  1315. And it's our privilege

  1316. to be so.

1317. This will be the last time

  1318. that I administer

  1319. the Lord's Supper

1320. to you as your minister.

  1321. For me,

  1322. that's precious.

  1323. It's always been precious.

  1324. And as I today

1325. am part of that unity

  1326. on the same level

  1327. as yourselves

  1328. spiritually

  1329. feeding on Christ crucified

  1330. and the benefits

  1331. of His death,

  1332. may the Lord bless

  1333. this moment to us.

  1334. And maybe a taste

  1335. of heaven.

  1336. And maybe it's something

  1337. that reminds us

1338. of what we were thinking

  1339. of earlier,

  1340. of the commitment

  1341. of the Lord

  1342. and His love

  1343. to die

  1344. for His people.

  1345. Well, we read

  1346. that night

  1347. in which the Lord

  1348. was betrayed

  1349. that He took bread.

1350. when He had given thanks,

  1351. He broke it

  1352. and said,

  1353. This is my body

  1354. which is for you.

  1355. This do

  1356. in remembrance

  1357. of me.

  1358. Like manner

  1359. after the supper,

  1360. He took the cup

  1361. saying,

  1362. This cup

  1363. is the new covenant

  1364. in my blood.

  1365. This do

  1366. in remembrance

  1367. of me.

  1368. For as often

  1369. as you eat

  1370. this bread

  1371. and drink

  1372. this cup,

  1373. you do show

  1374. the Lord's death.

  1375. For as often

  1376. as you eat

  1377. this bread

  1378. and drink

  1379. this cup,

  1380. you do show

  1381. the Lord's death

  1382. until He comes.

  1383. Until He comes.

1384. This will only go on

  1385. as long

  1386. as the world exists

  1387. and it will end

  1388. with the Lord's

  1389. own return.

  1390. And today

  1391. at this table,

  1392. at this Lord's Supper,

  1393. you are joined

  1394. to the marriage supper

  1395. that will follow

  1396. throughout eternity.

  1397. The marriage supper

  1398. of the Lamb.

  1399. Somebody once

  1400. asked an Anglican bishop,

  1401. Bishop,

  1402. are you saved?

  1403. And his reply was,

  1404. I was saved,

  1405. I am being saved,

  1406. I shall be saved.

  1407. In other words,

  1408. salvation has all

  1409. of these dimensions.

  1410. He was saying,

  1411. I was saved,

  1412. the day came

  1413. when God saved me.

  1414. I am being saved.

  1415. The work of salvation

  1416. in our hearts

  1417. and our souls

  1418. goes on

  1419. through our sanctification,

  1420. that aspect of it.

  1421. And that will

  1422. be the case

  1423. until

  1424. the Lord

  1425. takes us home.

  1426. I was saved,

1427. you can all see that.

  1428. I am being saved,

  1429. you're conscious of that.

  1430. I shall be saved.

  1431. Lord,

  1432. this world is not

  1433. our home.

  1434. Thank the Lord

  1435. for that.

  1436. Home

1437. is in the better country,

  1438. the heavenly country,

  1439. the marriage supper

  1440. of the Lamb,

  1441. where we shall enjoy

  1442. not only fellowship

  1443. with one another,

  1444. but with Him

  1445. in a perfect world.

  1446. And that's what

  1447. our hope

  1448. is set upon today.

  1449. And that's why

  1450. the Lord's Supper

  1451. is such an important

  1452. feature of life

  1453. as it is now,

  1454. because it feeds

  1455. that hope.

  1456. God uses it

  1457. to draw our mind,

  1458. as Paul said

  1459. to the Corinthians,

  1460. to the Colossians,

  1461. seek those things

  1462. which are above

  1463. where Christ is,

  1464. if you be risen

  1465. with Christ.

  1466. seek those things

  1467. which are above.

  1468. Live your lives

1469. in a way that shows

1470. that you are being saved,

  1471. that you value

  1472. the process

  1473. of guidance

  1474. by the Holy Spirit,

  1475. and that your hope

  1476. is that you shall

  1477. be saved,

  1478. that there is

  1479. a future

  1480. waiting you in heaven,

  1481. brighter than

  1482. we can imagine.

  1483. And it's all

  1484. due to this.

  1485. The Lord loved us

  1486. and gave

  1487. Himself

  1488. for us.

1489. May God bless to us

  1490. these thoughts

  1491. on His Word.

  1492. We're going to conclude

  1493. by singing

  1494. from Psalm 72,

  1495. the usual verses

  1496. that we sing,

  1497. Psalm 72,

  1498. from page 314,

  1499. and from verse 17,

  1500. His name forever

  1501. shall endure,

  1502. last like the sun

  1503. it shall.

  1504. Men shall be blessed

  1505. in Him,

  1506. and blessed

  1507. all nations

  1508. shall Him call.

  1509. Singing to the tune,

  1510. Ephingham,

  1511. these verses 17 to 19,

  1512. His name forever

  1513. shall endure.

  1514. forever shall endure,

  1515. cross by the sun

  1516. it shall,

  1517. men shall be blessed,

  1518. in Him our birth,

  1519. Lord shall everyone

  1520. love.

  1521. all nations

  1522. shall

  1523. trump

  1524. Him

  1525. call.

  1526. No,

  1527. blessed

  1528. be the Lord

  1529. God,

  1530. the Lord

  1531. of Israel.

1532. On thee, thou Lord, the wondrous world, in glory of his Son.

1533. And blessed be his glorious name to all eternity.

1534. The whole and the wondrous world, in glory of his Son.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

1540. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right, and the calendar will go to the door to my left.

1541. Lord, bless to us, we pray.

1542. All that we have partaken of today.

1543. Help them to store, help us to store in our minds those things that we have experienced.

1544. May we feed upon them in days to come.

1545. And now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you now and evermore.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. Thank you.

1548. Good to be very much.

  1549. Don't give it a greatиру rode.

  1550. Thank you.

  1551. — Why?
