  19. In the Christ Jesus I must confess,

  20. Reveal against me too,

  21. But us for our transgressions

  22. Then perch away shall flow.

  23. He blessed the man whom love us choose,

  24. And is supposed to be,

  25. That he within thy courts, O Lord,

  26. May still and forever be.

  27. We surely shall be satisfied

  28. With thy abundant grace,

  29. And with the goodness of thy heart,

  30. In all thy holy grace.

  31. God of our salvation,

  32. Thou live in thy righteousness,

  33. Thy fearful words unto our faith,

  34. Thy answer does justice.

  35. For the ends of all the earth,

  36. And those that are not free,

  37. Upon the sea their consequences,

  38. O Lord will bless them thee.

  39. Now let's once more call upon the Lord in prayer.

  40. Let's join together in prayer.

  41. Our gracious and blessed God,

  42. As we give thanks for these great words we have sung,

  43. We give thanks for the many truths contained in them,

  44. And for the way that they bear upon the experience

  45. Of your believing people.

  46. And we thank you, Lord,

  47. That our salvation is in your hand.

  48. We thank you for the way that it contains so much

  49. That we ourselves appreciate and benefit from,

  50. From day to day.

  51. We thank you especially for the emphasis in these words

  52. Of your forgiveness of sin,

  53. And for the way that you hear those who come

  54. With their cry in repentance,

  55. Seeking that you would forgive their sin

  56. And cover their sin from your sight.

  57. And we, Lord, confess as a congregation

  58. That this is an important element

  59. In our congregational worship too,

  60. As well as in our own private confession of sin.

  61. And so, Lord,

  62. Tonight we pray that you would forgive and pardon our iniquity.

  63. For we bring our transgressions to you,

  64. Confessing, O Lord,

  65. That they exceed our ability to number them or describe them.

  66. But we give thanks that they are all known to thee.

  67. And we give thanks that they are all known to the God

  68. Who has made such provision for them,

  69. Against them,

  70. In the Lord Jesus Christ.

  71. And so we give thanks, Lord,

  72. Tonight that we can come to you,

  73. That we can draw near to you,

  74. That we are not in a position where our sin

  75. Is marked against us

  76. For our everlasting condemnation.

  77. We give thanks that as we come,

  78. We are confident

  79. That you will receive us in the Lord Jesus Christ

  80. And for his sake.

  81. We thank you for all that

  82. We experienced already today

  83. On this Lord's day.

  84. And especially we give thanks

  85. For seeing a baptism

  86. And partaking of the Lord's Supper

  87. And being witnesses of it.

  88. And we pray that that will be blessed to us

  89. As we continue to dwell our mind

  90. Upon the great realities

  91. That are set out therein.

  92. Our being washed from our sin.

  93. Our communion with Christ.

  94. Our partaking of the benefits

  95. Of his atoning death.

  96. O Lord, our God,

  97. Make us thankful increasingly

  98. That we have such privileges given to us.

  99. Make us thankful that you did not leave us

  100. In the darkness of our own minds.

  101. That you gave us to be

  102. Recipients of such grace

  103. And of such benefits.

  104. We pray tonight again, Lord,

  105. For your Holy Spirit to work among us.

  106. And we give thanks, O Lord,

  107. For the evidences we have

  108. From time to time

  109. That you are actively working

  110. In people's hearts.

  111. That you are bringing them

  112. To know yourself.

  113. And bringing them to confess this

  114. Before their fellow human beings.

  115. We give thanks that you are active

  116. In adding to the number

  117. Of your confessing church.

  118. And we pray, Lord,

  119. That as we have witnessed that

  120. Already in these past few days.

  121. So we give thanks

  122. And give thanks for the encouragement

  123. That this gives us.

  124. That your word

  125. Does not return to you empty.

  126. But that as you send it forth

  127. With the power of your spirit.

  128. And so you come

  129. To change people inwardly.

  130. And you come

  131. To draw them to yourself.

  132. And you come

  133. To constrain them

  134. And to persuade them.

  135. To make it known

  136. To others as well

  137. That they are your people.

  138. That you are their God.

  139. We pray, Lord,

  140. For those

  141. Who were first-time

  142. Recipients

  143. Of the Lord's Supper

  144. Today.

  145. We ask, O Lord,

  146. Your blessing

  147. For each and all of them.

  148. We pray for Catherine

  149. And Yendon

  150. And Myrdo

  151. We thank you

  152. For the encouragement

  153. It gives us

  154. To see them

  155. Taking this step.

  156. We pray that you

  157. Would keep them

  158. That you would guide them

  159. That they may know

  160. Your protective care.

  161. And when the evil one

  162. Comes at times

  163. To attack them

  164. To seek to draw them

  165. Aside and away

  166. From being obedient

  167. To you

  168. And following you.

  169. Lord, grant them

  170. The strength

  171. To resist and overcome.

  172. And help them

  173. To continue

  174. To depend

  175. Upon the Lord

  176. Who is faithful

  177. To all his people.

  178. And we thank you

  179. That as they have

  180. Shown their faith

  181. And their hope

  182. In action,

  183. Lord, so that you

  184. Would continue

  185. To watch over them

  186. And graciously bless

  187. Them from day to day.

  188. Bless all others,

  189. O Lord,

  190. Who also sat

  191. At your table today.

  192. We ask that you

  193. Would continue

  194. To bless us

  195. Through these means

  196. Of grace

  197. In word and sacrament.

  198. We ask, O God,

  199. That it may prove

  200. To be for our

  201. Furtherance

  202. As a congregation

  203. That you would

  204. Grant your blessing

  205. To us as a people

  206. In whatever ways,

  207. O Lord,

  208. You have gifted us

  209. And we thank you

  210. For the many gifts

  211. That are found

  212. Within this congregation

  213. And for the way

  214. That you persuade

  215. So many people

  216. To use them

  217. To the furtherance

  218. Of your great name

  219. Of your great name

  220. And cause.

  221. And we pray

  222. That you bless

  223. All the work

  224. That is done

  225. From week to week

  226. And throughout each week

  227. Along with the worship

  228. Services of the congregation.

  229. And Lord,

  230. Bless them,

  231. We pray,

  232. And continue

  233. To bless those

  234. Who give of their time

  235. So freely

  236. And do so

  237. So selflessly

  238. In particular

  239. In regard to the teaching

  240. Of our young people

  241. And their care

  242. And their welfare

  243. To those who arrange

  244. Other meetings

  245. Throughout each week

  246. From time to time

  247. We pray,

  248. O Lord,

  249. That all of these

  250. May prove to be

  251. A further blessing

  252. To us as a people.

  253. We pray too,

  254. Lord,

  255. For those others

  256. Tonight

  257. Who meet as we do

  258. Throughout this town

  259. Throughout our islands

  260. Throughout our nation

  261. And we pray

  262. That your people

  263. May be encouraged

  264. And that we may see

  265. Movements of your Holy Spirit

  266. Bringing many others

  267. To know you

  268. And to follow you

  269. And to testify for you

  270. And we pray

  271. For those today

  272. In places of influence

  273. And importance

  274. In our land

  275. And Lord,

  276. When we face another

  277. General election

  278. To elect a government

  279. Over us

  280. We pray

  281. That you would guide us

  282. We pray

  283. That we may have

  284. The light

  285. Of your truth

  286. As we come to choose

  287. The government

  288. And we pray

  289. That you would

  290. Direct us,

  291. Lord,

  292. As to who to choose

  293. And where to cast

  294. Our votes

  295. We thank you

  296. For the liberty

  297. We have in doing this

  298. Help us,

  299. Lord,

  300. Whatever temptations

  301. We may have

  302. To withdraw

  303. From that process

  304. Even if we find

  305. That those who

  306. May not be

  307. To our liking

  308. Are brought before us

  309. As candidates

  310. Nevertheless,

  311. Lord,

  312. Help us,

  313. We pray,

  314. To exercise

  315. Our great privilege

  316. And freedom

  317. In coming to

  318. Elect those

  319. Who would be

  320. In government

  321. Over us

  322. We pray

  323. That you would

  324. Grant your blessing

  325. To us

  326. As we seek

  327. Your guidance

  328. As your people

  329. During this time

  330. We pray your blessing

  331. Tonight for

  332. All who can't be

  333. With us

  334. Especially those

  335. Who are ill

  336. Be near to them

  337. Lord,

  338. We pray

  339. And those who

  340. Mourn

  341. The passing

  342. Of loved ones

  343. We commend them

  344. To you

  345. Asking your comfort

  346. Lord,

  347. To be their portion

  348. Asking that you

  349. Would draw near

  350. To them

  351. And that you

  352. Would give them

  353. That stillness

  354. Of mind

  355. That would reflect

  356. Upon matters

  357. And bring them

  358. To yourself

  359. Remember,

  360. We pray

  361. All today

  362. Throughout the world

  363. Who have

  364. Such different

  365. Circumstances to ours

  366. Oh Lord

  367. We think of the

  368. Many places

  369. In the world

  370. Where war

  371. Continues to

  372. Blight the experience

  373. Of people

  374. Where many people

  375. Continue to

  376. Lose their lives

  377. And homes

  378. And other goods

  379. As well

  380. We pray

  381. For the situation

  382. Ongoing in Ukraine

  383. And for the dangers

  384. That exist there

  385. And for the further

  386. Encroachment

  387. Of oppression

  388. Upon the Ukrainian people

  389. Oh Lord

  390. We pray

  391. That you would

  392. Grant your own

  393. Intervention

  394. Grant that you would

  395. Stay the hands

  396. Of the aggressor

  397. We pray such as well

  398. In other parts

  399. Of the world

  400. Where violence

  401. Whether in the

  402. Middle East

  403. Or in other places

  404. Where violence

  405. Blights the lives

  406. Of so many people

  407. Lord send forth

  408. Your light

  409. And your truth

  410. Bring people

  411. To peace

  412. With one another

  413. And especially

  414. Bring them

  415. The peace

  416. Of the gospel

  417. And we ask

  418. That that may be so

  419. To the furtherance

  420. Of your own kingdom

  421. Be with us then

  422. Now we pray

  423. As we wait upon you

  424. Be with us later

  425. In the fellowship

  426. To grant us there

  427. The sense of your presence

  428. And the blessing

  429. Of your spirit

  430. Hear us

  431. We pray now

  432. In Jesus name

  433. And for his sake

  434. Amen

  435. Well we'll sing again

  436. To God's praise

  437. This time we're singing

  438. From Psalm 9

  439. Psalm number 9

  440. 9a

  441. That's on page

  442. Number 9

  443. And we'll sing

  444. Verses 7 to 12

  445. And we're singing

  446. To a tune

  447. Martyrs

  448. The Lord forever reigns

  449. On high

  450. His throne

  451. For judgment

  452. Stands

  453. He'll judge

  454. The world

  455. In righteousness

  456. With justice

  457. Rule the lands

  458. The Lord will be

  459. A hiding place

  460. For those

  461. Who are oppressed

  462. And he will be

  463. A strong defense

  464. For those

  465. Who are distressed

  466. All those

  467. Who know your name

  468. O Lord

  469. In you

  470. Their trust

  471. Will place

  472. For you do not

  473. Abandon those

  474. Who seek

  475. Your gracious face

  476. So on to verse 12

  477. From verse 7

  478. The Lord forever

  479. Reigns on high

  480. His throne

  481. For justice

  482. He'll judge

  483. The world

  484. In righteousness

  485. Let justice

  486. Rule the lands

  487. Of course

  488. The Lord

  489. Will be

  490. A hiding place

  491. For those

  492. Who are oppressed

  493. And he will be

  494. For those

  495. Who are oppressed

  496. For those

  497. Who are oppressed

  498. Who are oppressed

  499. Who are oppressed

  500. Who are oppressed

  501. Who are oppressed

  502. Who are oppressed

  503. Who are oppressed

  504. Who are oppressed

  505. Who are oppressed

  506. Who are oppressed

  507. Who are oppressed

  508. Who are oppressed

  509. Who are oppressed

  510. For those

  511. For those

  512. Who are oppressed

  513. Who are oppressed

  514. Who are oppressed

  515. Who are oppressed

  516. Who are oppressed

  517. Who are oppressed

  518. Who are oppressed

  519. Who are oppressed

  520. Who are oppressed

  521. Who are oppressed

  522. Who are oppressed

  523. Who are oppressed

  524. Who are oppressed

  525. Who are oppressed

  526. Who are oppressed

  527. Who are oppressed

  528. Who are oppressed

  529. Who are oppressed

  530. Who are oppressed

  531. Who are oppressed

  532. Who are oppressed

  533. Who are oppressed

  534. Who are oppressed

  535. Who are oppressed

  536. Who are oppressed

  537. Who are oppressed

  538. Who are oppressed

  539. Who are oppressed

  540. Who are oppressed

  541. Who are oppressed

  542. Who are oppressed

  543. Who are oppressed

  544. Who are oppressed

  545. Procure what he has done

  546. In avenger Roman's blood

  547. Remember haste evermore

  548. I cry, O Thee Ungrated One, Thee never will be more.

  549. Now we turn to read God's Word in the Gospel of John.

  550. The Gospel according to John, reading chapter 19, and beginning at verse 17.

  551. So we'll read from 17 right through down to verse 42.

  552. So John 19 at verse 17.

  553. So they took Jesus and he went out bearing his own cross to the place called the place of a skull,

  554. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  555. There they crucified him and with him two others, one on either side and Jesus between them.

  556. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.

  557. It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

  558. Many of the Jews read this inscription for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city

  559. and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin and in Greek.

  560. So the chief priest of the Jews said to Pilate, do not write the king of the Jews,

  561. but rather this man said, I am king of the Jews.

  562. Pilate answered, what I have written, I have written.

  563. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts,

  564. one part for each soldier, also his tunic.

  565. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  566. So they said to one another, let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.

  567. This was to fulfill the scripture which says, they divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

  568. So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister,

  569. Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

  570. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby,

  571. he said to his mother, woman, behold your son.

  572. Then he said to the disciple, behold your mother.

  573. And from that hour, the disciple took her into his own home.

  574. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said, to fulfill the scripture, I thirst.

  575. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

  576. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, it is finished.

  577. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

  578. Since it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath,

  579. for the Sabbath was a high day,

  580. the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken,

  581. and that they might be taken away.

  582. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.

  583. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,

  584. they did not break his legs.

  585. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,

  586. and at once there came out blood and water.

  587. He who saw it has borne witness.

  588. His testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth.

  589. That you also may believe.

  590. For these things took place, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  591. Not one of his bones will be broken.

  592. And again another scripture says,

  593. They will look on him whom they have pierced.

  594. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus,

  595. but secretly for fear of the Jews,

  596. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus,

  597. and Pilate gave him permission.

  598. So he came and took away his body.

  599. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  600. came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

  601. about 75 pounds in weight.

  602. So they took the body of Jesus,

  603. and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  604. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  605. Now in the place where he was crucified,

  606. there was a garden,

  607. and in the garden a new tomb,

  608. in which no one had yet been laid.

  609. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  610. since the tomb was close at hand,

  611. they laid Jesus there.

  612. Amen again.

  613. May God bless to us reading that portion of his word.

  614. Let's now sing from Psalm 25.

  615. That's on page 29.

  616. Psalm 25 and verses 8 to 15.

  617. Let's sing into a tune this time as Finart.

  618. Psalm 25 and verse 8.

  619. And so on down to verse 15.

  620. Because the Lord is just and good.

  621. He shows his heart to all his game.

  622. He guides the weak in what is right,

  623. and teaches them this holy way.

  624. And so to keep his calm and loss,

  625. he shows his love consistently.

  626. For he is so and good.

  627. For he is so and good.

  628. For he is so and good.

  629. For he is so and good.

  630. Oh, Lord, my God,

  631. forgive my gate in equity.

  632. Then not those to fear the Lord,

  633. he'll teach to them the choice.

  634. Thank you.

  635. Thank you.

  636. Thank you.

  637. This morning we looked at those who sat down in the vicinity of the cross and kept watch,

  638. and we considered some of the things that they would have seen, some of the things that

  639. they would have heard as they passed the time there while Jesus was being crucified up

  640. to the time that he died.

  641. And tonight we're going to look at love in relation to the cross.

  642. Because what you find happening here in the care that's taken over the body of Jesus by

  643. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea is indicative of the love that they had for him.

  644. And love indeed that showed itself in going to Pilate, asking that he would release the

  645. body of Jesus now that they knew that Jesus was dead.

  646. And so they carefully took the body from the cross.

  647. They carefully treated it in the manner of the Jews for burial.

  648. And they dealt with it in a way that showed great love and affection for these remains

  649. of Jesus, humanly speaking.

  650. And so that love in relation to the cross is another important aspect of how that cross

  651. bears upon our own experience, how the death of Jesus relates to our love for him, and how

  652. that is something which we also seek to commend to others from time to time.

  653. And we need to consider something of the background to these verses, something of the background indeed

  654. to these two people as they came here to take the body of Jesus and treat it with respect

  655. and with love.

  656. And we call that love becoming public.

  657. Love becoming public.

  658. Because both of these men were disciples of Jesus, but up to now they were that secretly.

  659. They hadn't made it known that they were actually believers in Christ.

  660. That they were trusting in Christ.

  661. That they were actually disciples of Jesus.

  662. You can see the reason secretly for fear of the Jews.

  663. That's why they had kept it previously hidden.

  664. Nobody knew apart from themselves that they were, as far as we can see, that they were actually

  665. disciples of Jesus.

  666. And you can understand that because the persecution they would face from the members of the Sanhedrin

  667. that they belonged to would have been intense.

  668. And that had been made known even to other people as time went on, as they followed Jesus,

  669. that anybody who came to confess them would be thrown out of the synagogue.

  670. And so you see that the way in which they kept that hidden is, in fact, very understandable.

  671. Very understandable because of the situation that they were in.

  672. And because of the relative danger as well that would come from making known that they

  673. were disciples of this Jesus that the scribes and Pharisees wanted to be rid of.

  674. And as far as they were concerned was an imposter who blasphemed and took to himself the title

  675. of the Son of God, which they did not see he was entitled to.

  676. And although you understand where they were coming from and understand the reference that

  677. they were doing this secretly for fear of the Jews, there's nothing at all in any of the

  678. passages dealing with this that suggest for a moment that this really actually was quite

  679. a commendable thing.

  680. It's understandable, but it's not actually commendable.

  681. Because nowhere in the Bible do you find anything to suggest that when we come to know the Lord,

  682. we really should just keep that to ourselves and go about our own business and not make it

  683. public and not actually have to face whatever we need to face in coming out publicly to say

  684. that he's our savior, that we are his people.

  685. And so here is love that previously was real, but didn't come into public light because they

  686. were afraid of the Jews, afraid of the ruling authorities.

  687. Both of these men were in the ruling council of the temple, members of the Sanhedrin.

  688. And so they were afraid of their fellow council members that this would really make trouble

  689. for them if it became known that they were disciples of Jesus.

  690. But nowhere do you find that that's actually something commendable.

  691. God doesn't praise that, although it's understandable why they were like that.

  692. And so tonight, you may be a secret disciple of Jesus.

  693. You may be a true believer in Christ.

  694. But for whatever reason, you've not yet made it known, such as those today who came and sat

  695. at the table, some for the first time have made it known, this is my Lord, this is my savior.

  696. I want to serve him.

  697. I want to make it clear that I am his, that he is mine.

  698. So if you are here tonight and your trust is in Jesus, but you haven't yet made that known,

  699. think about what that means to him.

  700. Think about all that he's done for you so as to save you from your sins.

  701. Think of the love that has gone towards the death that he died as we saw this morning.

  702. Think of his commitment as we saw it to his death, despite everything that was tempting him

  703. to draw aside from that, to turn back from that.

  704. And as you think of the commitment of Jesus, the love of Jesus,

  705. the way that Jesus saw it through right to the end,

  706. even refusing what might indeed have dulled his pain.

  707. Think tonight if you're here and you're not yet openly following Christ.

  708. Think of how he sees that.

  709. Why should you keep it hidden when he did all this for you?

  710. Why should you not make it known?

  711. Why should you not be at the next communion, God willing,

  712. and sitting with the Lord's people at his table?

  713. Love needs to be made known.

  714. Love indeed will at some point make itself known.

  715. And for whatever good reason they had to keep it hidden,

  716. there's nothing there that would say this is actually a good thing.

  717. And so for all of you today who are here and have not yet come to take communion

  718. or taken the step of making known that you are Christ's,

  719. please consider what that means.

  720. And if you're here tonight and you've not yet accepted Jesus,

  721. if you know the gospel as you do,

  722. and I've heard many times of Jesus actually being offered to us in the gospel,

  723. offering himself to us in the gospel,

  724. why should you be amongst those who have not accepted him?

  725. Why should you be left out of salvation through Jesus and in Jesus?

  726. Why should you go on to live and go on living without him

  727. when you know that God in his word commends him

  728. as one to love, one to serve, one to trust in,

  729. one to look forward to meeting in heaven?

  730. This is love previously hidden and love actually now revealed.

  731. And when you go to Mark's gospel, Mark chapter 15 and verse 43,

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  732. you read there that they took courage.

  733. He actually went and took courage to demand or to request really of Pontius Pilate,

  734. the governor, that he would release the body of Jesus.

  735. Joseph himself, a respected member of the council,

  736. who was himself looking for the kingdom of God, as Mark puts it,

  737. he took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

  738. Now, there's one thing that's going to give you courage,

  739. is to actually contemplate the death of Jesus, the cross of Jesus,

  740. and to contemplate for yourself what that means to you,

  741. what he's done for you.

  742. And that really surely brings courage to the fore

  743. so that you come out as well,

  744. even if you would not say of yourself,

  745. well, this is a very courageous thing to do.

  746. It's the right thing to do.

  747. And certainly in that context, it was a courageous thing to do

  748. because it was difficult for them knowing what might result in consequence.

  749. And there are many people tonight in the world

  750. who have far more difficult circumstances than any of us have,

  751. or most of us at least have.

  752. Places in the world where coming out on the side of Christ

  753. will almost inevitably lead to your death,

  754. especially where there are authorities that have either

  755. an antipathy to the gospel one way or the other,

  756. or follow other different religions that are in antipathy

  757. and indeed at times a hatred of the gospel and a hatred of Jesus.

  758. These people actually have to come as they believe in Christ

  759. and come to make it known that they are Christ's people

  760. and make it known that they follow him,

  761. that they are indeed disciples of Christ.

  762. We have the privilege of the freedoms that we have

  763. and our difficulties are relatively small

  764. compared to the difficulties of other disciples in the world

  765. who have come out and said,

  766. no, this is where we stand.

  767. We love him.

  768. We want to serve him.

  769. He is our Lord.

  770. And we want to make it plain

  771. that we are a believing people

  772. who follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

  773. Faith takes courage from the death of Christ,

  774. from contemplating what that death has meant

  775. to the person who is a disciple.

  776. You can go to chapter 12 here, for example,

  777. and find another example of that,

  778. a real difficulty outwardly.

  779. And for this woman, in chapter 12,

  780. Mary, who anointed Jesus at Bethany.

  781. This is how the chapter begins,

  782. six days before the Passover.

  783. He came to Bethany where Lazarus was,

  784. whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

  785. And they gave a dinner for him there.

  786. Martha served.

  787. Lazarus was one of those reclining at a table with him.

  788. Now just think of the context.

  789. Very, very public thing.

  790. Here was Lazarus, who'd been raised from the dead,

  791. gathering, grabbing the notice, if you like,

  792. of so many people around

  793. who knew that he had been buried,

  794. that he had in fact died.

  795. And yet here he was,

  796. sharing a table with the Lord, with Jesus.

  797. Mary, therefore,

  798. took a pound of expensive ointment

  799. made from pure nard

  800. and anointed the feet of Jesus

  801. and wiped his feet with her hair.

  802. And she's saying about him,

  803. I can't let this opportunity go

  804. without showing my love for him,

  805. without showing what he means to me,

  806. without showing that he is just so special,

  807. that although this is a very costly ointment,

  808. I have to use it

  809. and I have to spend it

  810. and I have to pour it out for him.

  811. And of course, Judas Iscariot said,

  812. why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii

  813. and given to the poor?

  814. He said this not because he cared about the poor,

  815. but because he was a thief

  816. and having charge of the money bag.

  817. He used to help himself to what was put in it.

  818. And Jesus said,

  819. leave her alone

  820. so that she may keep it

  821. or she has kept it

  822. for the day of my burial.

  823. You see, she saw in Jesus

  824. the one who was going to die for her sins.

  825. And here she is showing her affection

  826. for the cross,

  827. for the death of Jesus,

  828. for the Jesus who is about to die.

  829. And this is what she does.

  830. It's not too costly for her

  831. to spend this on him,

  832. to pour this out on him.

  833. You know, sometimes we think about

  834. the cost of following Jesus.

  835. And in a sense, of course,

  836. there is a cost to following Jesus.

  837. You attract attention.

  838. There's difficulties and challenges

  839. facing you in confessing your faith in Christ

  840. in a world that largely doesn't want to know him.

  841. But what is cost

  842. compared to the cost for him?

  843. What is the cost of this very expensive ointment

  844. compared to the Jesus

  845. on whose body this was poured out?

  846. You see, for Mary,

  847. it's not costly at all.

  848. It's the least she can do.

  849. For Judas Iscariot,

  850. hypocrite as he was,

  851. this is far too much to spend on Jesus.

  852. And you'll find so many people in the world

  853. that will say to you tonight,

  854. you surely don't want to give your life to him.

  855. You surely don't want to spend that much of time with him

  856. or energy for him.

  857. Surely that's just a bit of a waste, really.

  858. Think of all else you could do with your life

  859. instead of coming openly to be one of Jesus' disciples.

  860. Well, it's not too much

  861. when you consider what he has done for his people.

  862. And we've come from the Lord's table today.

  863. And now here at the cross,

  864. we find Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus

  865. coming into the open,

  866. showing their love for Jesus

  867. and love for his body now,

  868. hanging on the cross.

  869. Surely you're saying,

  870. I have to do that as well.

  871. I can't let this moment pass

  872. and just let the world go on

  873. thinking that I don't belong to him.

  874. I will do what they did.

  875. I'll come out

  876. and I'll show

  877. that I love him

  878. and I love what he's done for me.

  879. So there's love becoming public.

  880. But secondly, let's look at

  881. love's action

  882. towards this Jesus.

  883. And the first thing you notice here

  884. is that Joseph

  885. had a tomb,

  886. which actually was his own tomb.

  887. It was taken

  888. and created for himself

  889. a garden,

  890. in the garden,

  891. a new tomb

  892. in which no one had yet been laid.

  893. And from Matthew's Gospel,

  894. chapter 27

  895. and verse 60,

  896. you find this was actually

  897. for Joseph himself.

  898. He had prepared this tomb

  899. for himself

  900. long before this

  901. or sometime

  902. before this,

  903. before he ever came

  904. to carry the body of Jesus

  905. and place it there.

  906. And so,

  907. that was for himself

  908. to begin with.

  909. But here he is saying,

  910. no,

  911. actually I'm going to give this

  912. to Christ.

  913. I'm going to give this

  914. for his body.

  915. This is not going to be

  916. for me after all.

  917. It'll be for him.

  918. It'll be for him

  919. who did

  920. this for me

  921. to die the death

  922. that he died on the cross.

  923. And it was a new tomb.

  924. It was significant

  925. that nobody had ever been

  926. an occupant

  927. of that chamber.

  928. Nobody had ever been

  929. in that tomb.

  930. It was for Joseph himself.

  931. And that's significant too

  932. because it's set apart

  933. exclusively

  934. for Jesus himself.

  935. Now,

  936. when you think of that

  937. and go to

  938. the Old Testament,

  939. let me just

  940. turn your minds

  941. to Psalm 45.

  942. Psalm 45

  943. is a royal psalm.

  944. A psalm

  945. that anticipates Jesus.

  946. A psalm

  947. that's prophetic

  948. of Jesus.

  949. And all the way

  950. through that wonderful psalm,

  951. you'll find the psalmist

  952. expressing his love.

  953. My heart overflows

  954. with a pleasing thing.

  955. My address,

  956. my verses

  957. to the king.

  958. You are the most handsome

  959. of the sons of men.

  960. Grace is poured

  961. upon your lips.

  962. And then he appeals

  963. to him

  964. to ride out

  965. victoriously

  966. to conquer

  967. his enemies.

  968. And then he comes

  969. to verse 6.

  970. Your throne,

  971. O God,

  972. is forever and ever.

  973. The scepter

  974. of your kingdom

  975. is a scepter

  976. of righteousness.

  977. The kingliness

  978. of Jesus.

  979. Remember this tomb

  980. that Joseph had,

  981. which was for himself

  982. originally,

  983. is now coming

  984. to be provided

  985. for Jesus,

  986. who is,

  987. as we saw this morning,

  988. the king,

  989. despite the fact

  990. that he was mocked

  991. for claiming

  992. to be such.

  993. Therefore,

  994. God,

  995. your God,

  996. has anointed you.

  997. You have loved

  998. righteousness

  999. and hated wickedness.

  1000. Your robes

  1001. are all fragrant

  1002. with myrrh

  1003. and aloes.

  1004. Who would have thought

  1005. that these items

  1006. would have been seen

  1007. in the anointing

  1008. of Jesus' dead body

  1009. prior to his burial?

  1010. How wonderful

  1011. the scripture is,

  1012. just as we find

  1013. in Psalm 22,

  1014. such a reference

  1015. minutely to

1016. the way that his body

  1017. was pierced

  1018. and his hands

  1019. and his feet.

  1020. So here you find

  1021. a reference

  1022. to the kingliness

  1023. of Jesus.

  1024. And all the way

  1025. through,

  1026. you follow it

  1027. through,

  1028. and you can see

  1029. that it says

  1030. that all glorious

  1031. is the princess

  1032. in her chamber.

  1033. You can take that

  1034. as an emblem

  1035. or a picture

  1036. of God's people

  1037. as the church

  1038. that are married

  1039. to Jesus.

  1040. What does he say?

  1041. With joy

  1042. and gladness

  1043. they are led along

  1044. as they enter

  1045. the palace

  1046. of the king

  1047. and so on.

  1048. But what I'm saying

  1049. is that here

  1050. is an example

  1051. of Jesus,

  1052. the royal king,

  1053. that he is.

  1054. And you go to

  1055. John's gospel there

  1056. and you'll find

  1057. that this tomb

  1058. that's given

  1059. specially for him

  1060. is really amounting

  1061. to a royal burial.

  1062. It amounts to

  1063. the burial

  1064. of a king.

  1065. It's the least

  1066. he deserves

  1067. to have a tomb

  1068. in which no one

  1069. was ever yet laid.

  1070. And there

  1071. they laid

  1072. Jesus.

  1073. Now notice that.

  1074. Since the tomb

  1075. was at hand

  1076. because of the

  1077. Jewish day of preparation,

  1078. since the tomb

  1079. was close at hand,

  1080. they laid

  1081. Jesus there.

  1082. Now you go to

  1083. the other gospels

  1084. that speak mostly

  1085. about his body.

  1086. That's not absent

  1087. obviously from this passage.

1088. But why does it say

1089. here in the final words

  1090. they laid

  1091. Jesus there?

  1092. It doesn't say

1093. they laid his body there

  1094. although that of course

  1095. is what was happening.

  1096. but John saw fit

  1097. to say

  1098. they laid

  1099. Jesus there.

  1100. Why is that?

  1101. What makes the difference?

1102. Why is he saying this?

  1103. Well because I think

  1104. we're led into

  1105. how

  1106. the burial

  1107. of the body

  1108. of Jesus

  1109. was something

  1110. that was

  1111. attached

  1112. so closely

  1113. so intimately

  1114. to his person.

  1115. Remember when you think

  1116. of the person

  1117. of Jesus

  1118. who is this Jesus?

  1119. You don't think

  1120. of his human nature

  1121. to answer the question

  1122. who is he?

1123. You go to his divine nature

1124. as the son of God.

  1125. He is

  1126. the son of God.

  1127. That's his identity.

  1128. The son of God

  1129. who has taken

  1130. human nature

  1131. to himself

  1132. but he is

  1133. the son of God

  1134. and that's what

  1135. identifies him.

1136. And when it says here

  1137. that they laid

  1138. Jesus there

  1139. the experience

  1140. of death

  1141. the experience

  1142. of being buried

  1143. was something

  1144. that was experienced

1145. by the son of God.

  1146. We're not saying

  1147. that God

  1148. in his divine nature

  1149. died

  1150. which could not be

1151. but it is the son of God

1152. the divine son of God

  1153. the second person

  1154. of the Trinity

  1155. that God is

  1156. who comes here

  1157. to experience

  1158. his being buried

  1159. bodily.

  1160. And that's so important

  1161. too for us

  1162. because

  1163. Jesus

  1164. experienced

  1165. every aspect

  1166. of death

  1167. that belongs

  1168. to death.

  1169. We saw this morning

  1170. spiritual death

  1171. the death he experienced

  1172. in his soul

  1173. which was

  1174. something

  1175. of the greatest

  1176. possible pain

  1177. separation

  1178. from God.

1179. And if you go to

  1180. the likes of

  1181. 1 Corinthians 15

  1182. and verse 4

  1183. where Paul says

  1184. I delivered to you

  1185. what I received

  1186. from the Lord.

  1187. It's so significant

  1188. that in terms

  1189. of that summary

  1190. of the gospel

  1191. what Jesus

  1192. had given to Paul

  1193. to then deliver

  1194. in the message

  1195. of the gospel

  1196. it actually

  1197. involves

  1198. also includes

  1199. that he was

  1200. buried

  1201. because the apostles

  1202. saw this

  1203. as an important

  1204. emphasis

  1205. and element

  1206. in thinking

  1207. about the death

  1208. of Jesus

  1209. and what followed.

  1210. They specifically

  1211. mentioned

  1212. that he was buried

  1213. and in our own

  1214. catechism

  1215. in our own

  1216. confession

  1217. of faith

  1218. as well

  1219. these documents

  1220. those who drew up

  1221. these

  1222. followed the scriptures

  1223. which referred

  1224. to him being

  1225. buried

  1226. that that was part

  1227. of his humiliation

1228. he died on the cross

  1229. and he was

  1230. buried.

  1231. And

  1232. in other words

  1233. it's part of what

  1234. 1 Corinthians 15

  1235. puts of first

  1236. importance

  1237. Paul says

  1238. that's what I

  1239. delivered to you

  1240. that which is of

  1241. first importance

  1242. how that Jesus

  1243. died for our sins

  1244. according to the

  1245. scripture

  1246. that he was buried

  1247. that he was raised

  1248. again the third

  1249. day.

  1250. Now there's

  1251. understandably

  1252. a fear

  1253. on our part

  1254. to some extent

  1255. at least

  1256. of the grave

  1257. when you stand

  1258. at an open

  1259. graveside

  1260. a dot

  1261. to give us

  1262. a chill

  1263. I've done that

  1264. nearly 300 times

  1265. even since I came

  1266. here to Stornoway

  1267. and every time

  1268. you stand there

  1269. which should

  1270. actually have

  1271. that impact

  1272. upon us

  1273. you're seeing

  1274. death

  1275. in that body

  1276. being laid

  1277. to rest

  1278. in the tomb

  1279. separated from

  1280. the soul

  1281. that has gone

  1282. to eternity

  1283. very solemn

  1284. sight

  1285. something that

  1286. really

  1287. in some sense

  1288. fills us

  1289. with a sense

  1290. of dread

  1291. and it's

  1292. understandable

  1293. that we would

  1294. fear the grave

  1295. but you know

  1296. as a believer

  1297. in Christ

  1298. if you're

  1299. tonight

  1300. a believer

  1301. in Christ

  1302. you need

  1303. not fear

  1304. the grave

  1305. you need

  1306. not fear

  1307. your body

  1308. being laid

  1309. into the earth

  1310. and returning

  1311. to dust

  1312. why?

  1313. because he's

  1314. been there

  1315. before you

  1316. because he

  1317. the pioneer

  1318. who has

  1319. defeated death

  1320. has actually

  1321. experienced

  1322. even that

  1323. aspect of death

  1324. so that as he

  1325. comes to be

  1326. raised from

  1327. the dead

  1328. bodily

  1329. so that says

  1330. to you

  1331. and to me

  1332. I can see

  1333. now that death

  1334. in all its

  1335. completeness

  1336. has been

  1337. completely

  1338. vanquished

  1339. that spiritually

  1340. and physically

  1341. death is

  1342. swallowed up

  1343. by him

  1344. and therefore

  1345. why should I

  1346. fear

  1347. what happens

  1348. to my body

  1349. when I know

  1350. that Jesus

  1351. in terms of

  1352. his body

  1353. was laid

  1354. in the tomb

  1355. there

  1356. they laid

  1357. Jesus

  1358. he's been

  1359. there

  1360. ahead of us

  1361. already

  1362. so love's

  1363. action

  1364. in providing

  1365. this new

  1366. tomb

  1367. love's

  1368. action

  1369. in taking

  1370. the body

  1371. of Jesus

  1372. lovingly

  1373. and carefully

  1374. and laying

  1375. Jesus

  1376. in that

  1377. tomb

  1378. and love's

  1379. action

  1380. finally

  1381. in the fact

  1382. that here

  1383. you have

  1384. a garden

  1385. and it's

  1386. interesting how

  1387. the Bible

  1388. sometimes presents

  1389. us

  1390. with certain

  1391. teachings

  1392. involving

  1393. a garden

  1394. when God

  1395. created us

  1396. in the beginning

  1397. as you find

  1398. in the opening

  1399. chapters of

  1400. Genesis

  1401. he placed

  1402. Adam

  1403. and Eve

  1404. our first

  1405. parents

  1406. in the

  1407. garden

  1408. of Eden

  1409. they were

  1410. surrounded

  1411. by plenty

  1412. they were

  1413. surrounded

  1414. by everything

  1415. that was good

  1416. to see

  1417. and good

  1418. for them

  1419. they were

  1420. surrounded

  1421. by God's

  1422. provision

  1423. they had

  1424. access

  1425. to everything

  1426. there except

  1427. the one

  1428. tree

  1429. that God

  1430. had forbidden

  1431. which of course

  1432. sadly they came

  1433. to partake of

  1434. with devastating

  1435. results

  1436. and in each

  1437. of these gardens

  1438. here's a garden

  1439. as well

  1440. verse 41

  1441. in the place

  1442. where he was

  1443. crucified

  1444. there was a

  1445. garden

  1446. and in the

  1447. garden

  1448. a new

  1449. tomb

  1450. in the

  1451. garden

  1452. of Eden

  1453. sin

  1454. led

  1455. to death

  1456. and death

  1457. always involves

  1458. a grave

  1459. or most of

  1460. the time

  1461. apart from

  1462. those who

  1463. were taken

  1464. away from

  1465. this world

  1466. without seeing

  1467. death

  1468. such as

  1469. in the

  1470. Old Testament

  1471. you find

  1472. Enoch

  1473. but here is

  1474. by and large

  1475. what happens

  1476. to every

  1477. human being

  1478. we die

  1479. our body

  1480. is then

  1481. laid

  1482. into the

  1483. dust

  1484. in our

  1485. tradition

  1486. and practice

  1487. that happened

  1488. in the

  1489. garden of

  1490. Eden

  1491. what led

  1492. to that

  1493. grave

  1494. you could

  1495. say that

  1496. the grave

  1497. for human

  1498. beings

  1499. was created

  1500. in the

  1501. garden of

  1502. Eden

  1503. in consequence

  1504. of human

  1505. sin

  1506. a rebellion

  1507. against God

  1508. in the day

  1509. in which he

  1510. said to Adam

  1511. in the day

  1512. in which you

  1513. eat of it

  1514. you shall

  1515. surely die

  1516. that's what

  1517. happened

  1518. and here is

  1519. another garden

  1520. and while it is

  1521. indeed the case

  1522. that the grave

  1523. was created

  1524. in Eden

  1525. the grave

  1526. was consecrated

  1527. in this

  1528. garden

  1529. near the

  1530. cross

  1531. Jesus

  1532. his body

  1533. laid there

  1534. went into

  1535. death

  1536. went into

  1537. the tomb

  1538. you might

  1539. say

  1540. to prepare

  1541. it for

  1542. his people

  1543. because every

  1544. Christian can

  1545. say as

  1546. they come to

  1547. lay down

  1548. their life

  1549. as their

  1550. life ebbs

  1551. away

  1552. in whatever

  1553. circumstances

  1554. as they think

  1555. of dying

  1556. in this

  1557. world

  1558. every Christian

  1559. can say

  1560. and has the

  1561. right to

  1562. say

  1563. though my

  1564. body is

  1565. going to be

  1566. laid into

  1567. the grave

  1568. though my

  1569. body maybe

  1570. for many

  1571. many years

  1572. will be

  1573. laid there

  1574. and return

  1575. to the

  1576. dust

  1577. from which

  1578. I was

  1579. created

  1580. in the

  1581. beginning

  1582. that grave

  1583. has been

  1584. prepared

  1585. by the

  1586. Lord Jesus

  1587. Christ

  1588. and I

  1589. shall arise

  1590. out of that

  1591. grave

  1592. triumphantly

  1593. because he's

  1594. done that

  1595. for me

  1596. and before

  1597. me

  1598. so why

  1599. should we

  1600. fear the

  1601. grave

  1602. here's the

  1603. wonderful

  1604. emphasis

  1605. in the

  1606. gospel

  1607. that Jesus

  1608. has been

  1609. through every

  1610. phase of

  1611. life and

  1612. even of

  1613. death

  1614. itself

  1615. and every

  1616. single

  1617. aspect

  1618. of that

  1619. process

  1620. of that

  1621. journey

  1622. has actually

  1623. been prepared

  1624. by him

  1625. for his

  1626. people

  1627. and when

  1628. you come

  1629. to

  1630. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1631. chapter 21

  1632. let me

  1633. just read

  1634. these four

  1635. verses

  1636. as we

  1637. come towards

  1638. the end

  1639. of our

  1640. study

  1641. this

  1642. evening

  1643. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1644. chapter 21

  1645. which really

  1646. brings us

  1647. the account

  1648. we have

  1649. there of

  1650. heaven

  1651. heaven

  1652. after all

  1653. things have

  1654. been dealt

  1655. with

  1656. the judgment

  1657. is passed

  1658. he says

  1659. I saw

  1660. a new

  1661. heaven

  1662. and a new

  1663. earth

  1664. for the

  1665. first heaven

  1666. and the

  1667. first earth

  1668. had passed

  1669. away

  1670. and the

  1671. sea was

  1672. no more

  1673. and I

  1674. saw the

  1675. holy city

  1676. the new

  1677. Jerusalem

  1678. coming down

  1679. out of heaven

  1680. from God

  1681. prepared as a

  1682. bride adorned

  1683. for her husband

  1684. and I heard

  1685. a loud voice

  1686. from the

  1687. throne

  1688. saying

  1689. behold the

  1690. dwelling place

  1691. of God

  1692. is with

  1693. man

  1694. he will

  1695. dwell with

  1696. them

  1697. and they

  1698. will be

  1699. his people

  1700. and God

  1701. himself will

  1702. be with

  1703. them as

  1704. their God

  1705. he will

  1706. wipe away

  1707. every tear

  1708. from their

  1709. eyes

  1710. and death

  1711. shall be

  1712. no more

  1713. neither

  1714. shall there

  1715. be mourning

  1716. nor crying

  1717. nor pain

  1718. anymore

  1719. for the

  1720. former things

  1721. have passed

  1722. away

  1723. and as

  1724. you describe

  1725. as you

  1726. find the

  1727. new

  1728. Jerusalem

  1729. described

  1730. in the

  1731. following

  1732. parts

  1733. of the

  1734. chapter

  1735. the one

  1736. thing

  1737. that's

  1738. prominently

  1739. noticeable

  1740. is

  1741. there is

  1742. no reference

  1743. to a

  1744. cemetery

  1745. no reference

  1746. to a

  1747. grave

  1748. there are

  1749. no graves

  1750. there is

  1751. no death

  1752. there is

  1753. no cemetery

  1754. in the city

  1755. of the

  1756. new

  1757. Jerusalem

  1758. the death

  1759. has been

  1760. overcome

  1761. death

  1762. stands

  1763. defeated

  1764. beneath

  1765. the feet

  1766. of God's

  1767. people

  1768. in Christ

  1769. they have

  1770. overcome

  1771. in him

  1772. what a

  1773. prospect

  1774. what a

  1775. glorious

  1776. outlook

  1777. you have

  1778. as a

  1779. Christian

  1780. in this

  1781. world

  1782. that this

  1783. is actually

  1784. what lies

  1785. ahead of

  1786. you

  1787. and that

  1788. even though

  1789. the grave

  1790. lies in

  1791. between

  1792. it's a

  1793. defeated

  1794. grave

  1795. it's a

  1796. prepared

  1797. grave

  1798. it's a

  1799. grave

  1800. in which

  1801. the Lord

  1802. has already

  1803. been laid

  1804. it's a

  1805. grave that

  1806. he occupied

  1807. it's a

  1808. grave that

  1809. he rose

  1810. out of

  1811. it's a

  1812. grave that

  1813. he defeated

  1814. for his

  1815. people

  1816. and it's

  1817. a grave

  1818. therefore that

  1819. you need

  1820. not fear

  1821. there is

  1822. no more

  1823. death

  1824. it's gone

  1825. forever

  1826. my friend

  1827. tonight

  1828. is your

  1829. trust in

  1830. Christ

  1831. are you

  1832. looking forward

  1833. to a life

  1834. with no

  1835. death

  1836. death

  1837. because

  1838. remember

  1839. the opposite

  1840. is also

  1841. true

  1842. there is

  1843. nothing in

  1844. hell but

  1845. death

  1846. there is

  1847. no prospect

  1848. of being

  1849. delivered from

  1850. death

  1851. eternal

  1852. death

  1853. lasting

  1854. death

  1855. there is

  1856. no voice

  1857. that says

  1858. come to

  1859. me and

  1860. I will

  1861. give you

  1862. rest

  1863. there is

  1864. no assurance

  1865. that will

  1866. say this

  1867. is only for

  1868. a short

  1869. time and

  1870. it will

  1871. end

  1872. just put

  1873. up with

  1874. it

  1875. and it

  1876. will be

  1877. alright

  1878. in the

  1879. end

  1880. remember

  1881. the opposite

  1882. of heaven

  1883. is hell

  1884. in every

  1885. sense

  1886. and you

  1887. don't want

  1888. to go

  1889. there

  1890. that's not

  1891. what you

  1892. want your

  1893. eternity

  1894. to be

  1895. you want

  1896. your eternity

  1897. to be

  1898. without

  1899. death

  1900. without

  1901. a grave

  1902. without

  1903. anything

  1904. associated

  1905. with death

  1906. you want

  1907. it to be

  1908. gone

  1909. how does

  1910. that come

  1911. about

  1912. comes

  1913. about

  1914. by giving

  1915. your life

  1916. to Jesus

  1917. by trusting

  1918. in the one

  1919. who has

  1920. overcome

  1921. death

  1922. if you

  1923. like

  1924. being

  1925. like

  1926. Nicodemus

  1927. and Joseph

  1928. of Arimathea

  1929. they went

  1930. and asked

  1931. Pilate

  1932. boldly

  1933. for the

  1934. body

  1935. of Jesus

  1936. what did

  1937. they then

  1938. do with

  1939. it

  1940. they took

  1941. it down

  1942. from the

  1943. cross

  1944. they treated

  1945. it respectfully

  1946. they covered

  1947. it with a

  1948. linen shroud

  1949. they then

  1950. buried

  1951. Jesus

  1952. in this

  1953. new

  1954. tomb

  1955. and

  1956. figuratively

  1957. is that

  1958. not something

  1959. for you

  1960. as well

  1961. do you

  1962. not want

  1963. tonight

  1964. to take

  1965. this

  1966. Jesus

  1967. into your

  1968. arms

  1969. to take

  1970. this

  1971. death

  1972. of Jesus

  1973. the Jesus

  1974. who now

  1975. lives

  1976. and make

  1977. that the

  1978. basis

  1979. of your

  1980. hopes

  1981. love

  1982. so that

  1983. your love

  1984. too

  1985. will come

  1986. to be

  1987. seen

  1988. as a

  1989. love

  1990. that

  1991. comes

  1992. into

  1993. the

  1994. open

  1995. and

  1996. public

  1997. a love

  1998. whose

  1999. action

  2000. towards

  2001. the

  2002. Lord

  2003. is made

  2004. known

  2005. to those

  2006. around

  2007. you

  2008. so that

  2009. you value

  2010. him

  2011. and in

  2012. valuing

  2013. him

  2014. you give

  2015. him in

  2016. your heart

  2017. the reception

  2018. that they

  2019. gave to

  2020. his body

  2021. as they

  2022. came to

  2023. treat it

  2024. with respect

  2025. after all

  2026. he said

  2027. in contrast

  2028. to the

  2029. false

  2030. shepherds

  2031. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  2032. chapter 10

  2033. I have

  2034. come

  2035. that they

  2036. might have

  2037. life

  2038. and have

  2039. it

  2040. the more

  2041. abundantly

  2042. that's the

  2043. life that

  2044. you want

  2045. the life

  2046. that you

  2047. need

  2048. the

  2049. spiritual

  2050. life

  2051. you have

  2052. it in

  2053. Jesus

  2054. and in

  2055. receiving

  2056. him as

  2057. your

  2058. savior

  2059. and you

  2060. cannot

  2061. have it

  2062. and you

  2063. will not

  2064. have it

  2065. any other

  2066. way

  2067. let's

  2068. pray

  2069. oh

  2070. gracious

  2071. and eternal

  2072. God

  2073. we marvel

  2074. at what

  2075. you

  2076. willingly

  2077. took to

  2078. yourself

  2079. in the

  2080. place of

  2081. your people

  2082. we marvel

  2083. that you

  2084. took even

  2085. the death

  2086. we deserved

  2087. even though

  2088. it was

  2089. something that

  2090. took you

  2091. into the

  2092. depths and

  2093. the darkness

  2094. of Calvary's

  2095. cry

  2096. in the

  2097. forsakenness

  2098. that you

  2099. experienced

  2100. we thank you

  2101. tonight

  2102. that you are

  2103. risen from

  2104. the dead

  2105. that you have

  2106. been exalted

  2107. to glory

  2108. we thank you

  2109. gracious and

  2110. glorious Lord

  2111. that you

  2112. stand over

  2113. death

  2114. triumphantly

  2115. that you

  2116. invite your

  2117. people to

  2118. share with

  2119. you in

  2120. that glorious

  2121. victory over

  2122. death

  2123. that you

  2124. call upon us

  2125. tonight through

  2126. the gospel

  2127. to come to

  2128. you and to

  2129. give ourselves

  2130. to you

  2131. to trust in

  2132. you and to

  2133. realize oh

  2134. Lord that

  2135. this indeed is

  2136. the way the

  2137. truth and

  2138. the life

  2139. and we ask

  2140. that you

  2141. bless your

  2142. word to us

  2143. once again

  2144. be pleased to

  2145. bless us in

  2146. the fellowship

  2147. bless to us

  2148. the food

  2149. prepared also

  2150. for us there

  2151. in all of

  2152. these ways oh

  2153. Lord we pray

  2154. your blessing

  2155. for Jesus

  2156. sake amen

  2157. our final

  2158. singing tonight

  2159. is Psalm

  2160. 22

  2161. Psalm 22

  2162. we associate

  2163. the first part

  2164. of the psalm

  2165. very often

  2166. with what we

  2167. do in

  2168. remembering

  2169. the Lord's

  2170. death and

  2171. the Lord's

  2172. supper

  2173. indeed we

  2174. almost always

  2175. sing from

  2176. this psalm

  2177. in that

  2178. context but

  2179. tonight we're

  2180. singing verses

  2181. 28 to 31

  2182. and that's on

  2183. page 229

  2184. the tune is

  2185. Bethesda

  2186. which speaks

  2187. about the

  2188. way in which

  2189. the Lord

  2190. will have a

  2191. people to

  2192. serve him

  2193. as the

  2194. result and

  2195. the fruit

  2196. of his

  2197. labor for

  2198. them because

  2199. the kingdom

  2200. to the Lord

  2201. doth appertain

  2202. as his

  2203. likewise among

  2204. the nations

  2205. the governor

  2206. he is

  2207. and verse 31

  2208. they shall

  2209. come and

  2210. they shall

  2211. declare his

  2212. truth and

  2213. righteousness

  2214. unto a

  2215. people yet

  2216. unborn

  2217. and that he

  2218. hath done

  2219. this

  2220. so these

  2221. verses then

  2222. to God's

  2223. praise and

  2224. conclusion

  2225. well

  2226. God

  2227. means

  2228. come and

  2229. come and

  2230. he

  2231. 망ed

  2232. us

  2233. in

  2234. the

  2235. trag dismissal

  2236. Writes among the nations

2237. That gather on the is

  2238. That that one's deep

  2239. That worship shall

2240. All who do us descend

  2241. Shall walk to them

  2242. One of them come

2243. Restore from the end of the end

  2244. As he shall serve

  2245. This true to him

  2246. Unto the Lord

  2247. Is shall

  2248. Before a tender nation

  2249. Reckoned in ages

  2250. To the Lord

  2251. Is shall

  2252. Is shall

  2253. Come out

  2254. They shall

  2255. Declare

  2256. This truth

  2257. And righteousness

  2258. And to a people

  2259. Yet am

  2260. Born

  2261. And that he

  2262. Have done

  2263. Is

  2264. Well

  2265. Colin Mordor and myself

2266. Will take the front doors again

2267. This evening I'll go to the door to my left

2268. And he can go to the other side

  2269. Let's conclude now with a benediction

2270. Now may grace and mercy and peace

  2271. From God the Father

2272. The Son and the Holy Spirit

2273. Rest and abide with you now and evermore

  2274. Amen

  2275. Thank you

  2276. Thank you

  2277. !
