  1. begin our worship and we're singing firstly tonight from Psalm 105.

  2. Psalm 105 on page 138, June of Saint Daniel, and we're singing verses 1 to 11.

  3. Give thanks to the Lord God and call on his name. His wonderful deeds to the nations proclaim.

  4. Sing praises to him and his exploits at record. Let all those who seek him rejoice in the Lord.

  5. You chosen ones look to the Lord and his might. Seek ever his face and his wondrous recite.

  6. His miracles too and his judgments divine. You children of Abraham, Jacob's own line.

  7. Reminding us how important it is to sing praise to God, to praise him for all his acts,

  8. and especially for those that we experience ourselves from day to day. Give thanks to the Lord God.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. Let our God and call on his name. His wonderful deeds to the nations proclaim.

  12. Sing praises to him and his ex-wife's regard. Let all those who seek him rejoice in the Lord.

  13. Amen.

  14. Mormon God and call on his side.

  15. This pardon me.

  16. Make us do, and each judgment's divine,

  17. You children of Israel and Jacob's own life.

  18. The Lord is our God, and He rules all the earth.

  19. Remember in His covenant, the word He set forth.

  20. He worked for the ages to come to make good,

  21. His promise to Abraham, to rise and renew.

  22. To take up this sovereign decree was made sure,

  23. With His service coming would always endure.

  24. To you I will give past your portion to stand,

  25. The country of kingdom, the beautiful land.

  26. Let's now call upon the Lord in prayer.

  27. We're going to join together in prayer.

  28. Our gracious and eternal God, we thank you that we too have come to receive your covenant blessings,

  29. That covenant which has been enforced throughout all the ages of your church.

  30. And we thank you that tonight we enter into further experience of your covenant promises,

  31. And your covenant blessings.

  32. Where we gather together as a people who worship the God who is mentioned in these words we have sung,

  33. The God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of the living and not of the dead,

  34. The God who continues to bless His people,

  35. And the God whose promises we continue to enjoy and to anticipate those that have yet to be fulfilled.

  36. Oh Lord, we thank you for your commitment and steadfastness to all that you have promised to do for your people.

  37. We know that many of these have already been fulfilled,

  38. And fulfilled abundantly and wonderfully in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  39. For that great promise that He would come and be the Savior of His people,

  40. That He would come into this world and give Himself a ransom for many.

  41. How wonderfully, Lord, that has been accomplished already.

  42. And we give thanks for the opportunity to remember His death that we engaged in last Lord's Day.

  43. And we thank you, O Lord, for all that accompanies your promises in the teaching of your word.

  44. We thank you that they are especially accompanied by your faithfulness and your power,

  45. Your ability to bring these promises to pass,

  46. And your faithfulness to ensure that they will do so.

  47. We thank you, O Lord, tonight that we come as a congregation of promises.

  48. For we are in some way or other the product of those who have come to reveal,

  49. To be recipients of your promises in generations before us.

  50. We thank you that we are the product of their prayers.

  51. As we have come into the possession of the blessings of your covenant.

  52. We pray tonight, Lord, for further blessing.

  53. The blessing of your Holy Spirit taking the things of Christ and showing them to us.

  54. And the blessing of instilling in our hearts an enlargement of that hope that belongs to your people.

  55. That hope that looks towards the fulfillment of the Canaan of the Old Testament in the heaven that you hold before us.

  56. As the final terminus of blessedness for your people.

  57. We pray tonight, O Lord, that your blessing will encompass us and come to involve each one of us.

  58. Lord, each one of us, as we gather before you, come to acknowledge our need.

  59. And come to acknowledge that we stand before you as those who once again come to open our hearts to receive that supply of your own holy blessing that will meet us in our need.

  60. And so bless us, we pray each one.

  61. Bless us together as a congregation.

  62. Bless us, Lord, in all our activities.

  63. Those that we anticipate in this week to come.

  64. We pray that your blessing will be with us in all our times of worship.

  65. And in all our other activities as well.

  66. And we thank you for all that we are able to engage in.

  67. And to participate in as a people.

  68. Your goodness, Lord, is opened up for us each day.

  69. And provides for us each day.

  70. And we give thanks, O Lord, that in your goodness you continue so to bless us.

  71. Lord, we remember tonight those who have different needs to our own in different parts of the world.

  72. And we think especially of those who are not able to be with us in our own community.

  73. Those who are confined to hospitals, to care homes, to their own homes as well.

  74. Through illness, through recovery, through various types of ailments that affect us from day to day, from time to time.

  75. And we ask your blessing, O Lord, especially on those whose faculties have begun to fail.

  76. Whether it be in terms of mental ability or physical.

  77. O Lord, we pray for them.

  78. We pray for those who care for them.

  79. Those who are anxious over them.

  80. Those who look to their needs.

  81. And pray that you would bless them, O Lord, as all of them together share in these difficult issues of life.

  82. We pray for those who mourn the passing of loved ones.

  83. We pray that you would grant them your comfort, your consolation.

  84. And we pray for your guidance for them, for your strengthening of them.

  85. Help them, we pray, to face the issues of living without loved ones.

  86. Especially, Lord, when we find that so often in life we have unexpected developments, even in the passing of loved ones.

  87. And we pray that you would bless all those who are tonight in such situations.

  88. We pray your blessing, too, for all that we, Lord, know of in our own midst, as difficulties in our community.

  89. Those who wrestle with addictions of various kinds.

  90. And those who seek to help them.

  91. Those who have loneliness to contend with day by day.

  92. Remember them, we pray.

  93. And grant to them that they may know your own company and your own fellowship.

  94. For that is above all what we prize in this life, O Lord, by way of companionship.

  95. To have the Lord with us.

  96. And to know that the Lord is indeed in our hearts and in our homes.

  97. In all aspects of our life.

  98. We pray your blessing on all who go out with the gospel to various parts of the world.

  99. We pray that you would remember her own Muriel.

  100. As she continues in Cambodia to serve you.

  101. Be with her there and grant her continued safety and continued blessing on her work.

  102. Remember the work of SGA, especially in these difficult times.

  103. In Central Europe, Ukraine especially.

  104. Grant them your continued blessing and provision for them.

  105. Oh Lord, we thank you for the account recently given to us by them.

  106. That they see further blessing despite the difficulties.

  107. And even increased blessing in places despite the challenges they face.

  108. Continue, Lord, we pray to provide for them.

  109. And all who witness to the Jewish people.

  110. All who witness to Muslim people in different parts of the world.

  111. Oh gracious one, we're so conscious of tensions.

  112. And of violence and conflict.

  113. Even between such people.

  114. And we pray for days of peace.

  115. We pray that you would come and show us your power once again.

  116. In the advancement of your kingdom.

  117. And in the love of Christ being shown amongst so many people throughout the world.

  118. Remember us then now we pray as we continue here before you.

  119. Grant us your blessing as we seek your word, Lord, to be once again placed in our hearts.

  120. By the power of your spirit.

  121. And help us in all of these aspects of our worship.

  122. To give glory and honor and praise to your glorious majestic name.

  123. We pray in Jesus name.

  124. Amen.

  125. We'll sing once again to God's praise.

  126. This time is Psalm 3.

  127. Psalm number 3 in the Sing Psalms version.

  128. That's on page 3.

  129. We're singing verses 1 to 6.

  130. The tune is Finart.

  131. Oh Lord, how many are my foes.

  132. How many up against me rise.

  133. They all are saying now to me, in vain, he on his God relies.

  134. But you are my protector, Lord.

  135. You are a shield around me spread.

  136. My glory comes from you alone.

  137. The one who raises up my head.

  138. When to the Lord I lift my voice in face of those who hate me still.

  139. The Lord will hear my cry to him and answer from his holy hill.

  140. I settle down and sleep in peace.

  141. I wake in God's upholding hand.

  142. I will not fear ten thousand foes whose circling round against me stand.

  143. Difficult to sleep on a battlefield, isn't it?

  144. Yet in the Christian battle, in the various conflicts of the Christian life,

  145. we find the psalmist so often pointing us to the place of peace in the Lord,

  146. where here he calls upon the Lord as his shield, his protector,

  147. the one who gives him the raising up of his head in victory.

  148. And we sing these verses knowing that the Lord has already given us that in Jesus Christ,

  149. that we come to share in that when we come to place our life in his hands.

  150. Oh Lord, how many are my foes. How many up against me rise.

  151. May Allah say in the hour of me rise.

  152. And may Allah say in the hour of me.

  153. And may he on his love.

  154. May Allah say in the hour of me.

  155. And may he on his love.

  156. May Allah say in the hour of me.

  157. But you are my,

  158. How many up against me rise.

  159. How many up against me rise.

  160. May Allah say in the hour of me.

  161. And may he on his love.

  162. May Allah say in the hour of me.

  163. But you are my protector, Lord.

  164. You have a shield around me, say.

  165. My glory comes from you alone,

  166. The one who raises up my head.

  167. When to the Lord I lift my voice,

  168. In face of those who hate me still,

  169. The Lord will hear my guide to him,

  170. And answer from his glory.

  171. I settle down and sleep in peace.

  172. I wake in God's upholding hand.

  173. I will not fear ten thousand holes,

  174. Who serve the man against his hand.

  175. Now let's turn to read God's word.

  176. Our reading tonight is from the book of Genesis.

  177. The book of Genesis and chapter 45.

  178. At verse 16.

  179. And we'll read into the first part of chapter 46.

  180. Down as far as verse 7.

  181. So that's Genesis chapter 45.

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  182. From verse 16.

  183. This is when Joseph's brothers had arrived in Egypt.

  184. The report was given in Pharaoh's house that they had arrived.

  185. And so we read from that point as Pharaoh speaks.

  186. And then on into the next chapter.

  187. So from verse 16.

  188. When the report was heard in Pharaoh's house,

  189. Joseph's brothers have come.

  190. It pleased Pharaoh and his servants.

  191. And Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  192. Say to your brothers,

  193. Do this.

  194. Load your beasts and go back to the land of Canaan.

  195. And take your father and your households and come to me.

  196. And I will give you the best of the land of Egypt.

  197. And you shall eat the fat of the land.

  198. And you, Joseph, are commanded to say,

  199. Do this.

  200. Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives.

  201. And bring your father and come.

  202. Have no concern for your goods.

  203. For the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.

  204. The sons of Israel did so.

  205. And Joseph gave them wagons according to the command of Pharaoh.

  206. And gave them provisions for the journey.

  207. To each and all of them he gave a change of clothes.

  208. But to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver.

  209. And five changes of clothes.

  210. To his father he sent as follows.

  211. Ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt.

  212. And ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread and provision for his father on the journey.

  213. Then he sent his brothers away.

  214. And as they departed he said to them.

  215. Do not quarrel on the way.

  216. So they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob.

  217. And they told him,

  218. Joseph is still alive.

  219. And he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.

  220. And his heart became numb.

  221. For he did not believe them.

  222. But when they told him all the words of Joseph.

  223. Which he had said to them.

  224. And when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him.

  225. The spirit of their father Jacob revived.

  226. And Israel said,

  227. It is enough.

  228. Joseph my son is still alive.

  229. I will go and see him before I die.

  230. So Israel took his journey.

  231. With all that he had.

  232. And came to Beersheba.

  233. And offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

  234. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night.

  235. And he said,

  236. Jacob, Jacob.

  237. And he said,

  238. Here am I.

  239. Then he said,

  240. I am God.

  241. The God of your father.

  242. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt.

  243. For there I will make you into a great nation.

  244. I myself will go down with you to Egypt.

  245. And I will also bring you up again.

  246. And Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.

  247. Then Jacob set out from Beersheba.

  248. The sons of Israel carried Jacob their father.

  249. Their little ones and their wives in the wagons.

  250. That Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

  251. They also took their livestock and their goods.

  252. Which they had gained in the land of Canaan.

  253. And came into Egypt Jacob and all his offspring with him.

  254. His sons and his sons' sons with him.

  255. His daughters and his sons' daughters.

  256. All his offspring he brought with him into Egypt.

  257. Amen.

  258. May God again bless us as we read his precious word.

  259. We'll sing once again in Psalm 37.

  260. This time Psalm 37 on page 254.

  261. And the tune this time is Weatherby.

  262. Psalm 37 from verse 23.

  263. Down as far as verse 28.

  264. A good man's footsteps by the Lord are ordered aright.

  265. And in the way wherein he walks he greatly doth delight.

  266. Although he fall, yet shall he not be cast down utterly.

  267. Because the Lord with his own hand upholds him mightily.

  268. I have been young and now am old.

  269. Yet have I never seen the just man left.

  270. Nor that his seed for bread have beggars been.

  271. And so on down as far as verse 28.

  272. A good man's footsteps by the Lord.

  273. I have been young and now, but I am young and now.

  274. And so on down as far as verse 28.

  275. And the Lord is in the way.

  276. I have been young and now.

  277. And so on down as far as verse 28.

  278. And so on down as far as verse 28.

  279. And the words or whilst white are ordered air aright.

  280. And in the way where he walks, he greatly glad he lies.

  281. O glory, O yet shall he not be cast of lottery,

  282. Because the Lord with his own hand upholds him mightily.

  283. I have been young and never old, yet have I never seen

  284. The just one left, nor the ungecee, Forbred a beggar dream.

  285. He's never merciful and blessed, His seed is blessed before.

  286. Depart from evil and new good And dwell forevermore.

  287. For God loves judgment and his saints, Bleeds not in any case.

  288. They are death, ever but the Lord Shall lead the sinners with him.

  289. Well, if you turn with me now, please, to Genesis chapter 46.

    Genesis 46 chapter mention

  290. In Genesis 46, we're going to look at the first four verses of Genesis 46.

  291. Let's just read these verses again.

  292. So Israel, that's of course Jacob,

  293. He took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba

  294. And offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

  295. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said,

  296. Jacob, Jacob.

  297. And he said, Here am I.

  298. Then he said, I am God, the God of your father.

  299. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt,

  300. For there I will make you into a great nation.

  301. I myself will go down with you to Egypt,

  302. And I will also bring you up again.

  303. And Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.

  304. The fear of the future, to some extent at least,

  305. Is very common, I'm sure, to every human being,

  306. To some extent or other.

  307. It's a very natural part of our experience,

  308. To have some element of fear,

  309. As we look into the future.

  310. Especially when we consider certain possibilities.

  311. They may never happen,

  312. But they come to our minds as possibilities.

  313. But there are also things which you know are going to be inevitable,

  314. Which also may instill a sense of fear in our hearts about the future.

  315. For all of us as individuals.

  316. For all of us as individuals.

  317. Serious illness.

  318. The issue of death itself.

  319. Unemployment.

  320. For younger ones, the development of our career.

  321. Various other items like that,

  322. And many other items like that.

  323. As they form part of our daily experience in life,

  324. Can be a source of fear for us.

  325. As we look into a future,

  326. Which we ourselves actually cannot control.

  327. Which we ourselves cannot see clearly,

  328. At least most of the time.

  329. So the fear of the future is a natural element in our thinking.

  330. And that also applies to groups of people.

  331. It applies to congregations like yourselves.

  332. There are many things in the experiences of congregations,

  333. As congregations,

  334. That they may have some sense of foreboding,

  335. Or fear, or anxiety over.

  336. For example,

  337. A vacancy such as you yourselves are going to experience,

  338. Very shortly.

  339. And for me,

  340. Fear may actually be part of

  341. What looks,

  342. As I look ahead to retirement,

  343. Which I don't know anything about just now.

  344. Even though I've taken some soundings

  345. From some people who are already retired.

  346. But there are certain aspects of that,

  347. When it's something you're not being used to.

  348. There are aspects of that,

  349. That may instill some anxiety,

  350. Or doubts,

  351. Or even fear in one's mind.

  352. And it really means that

  353. Congregations,

  354. As well as individuals,

  355. Need from God,

  356. From time to time,

  357. From God,

  358. A reassurance,

  359. That everything is well in His hands.

  360. And that's what we're going to look at tonight.

  361. And we're going to try and apply this

  362. To the future,

  363. Whatever it may hold for us,

  364. Not to be afraid.

  365. We're giving it the title,

  366. Don't be afraid of the future.

  367. It's all in God's hands.

  368. And we're looking at it

  369. From the perspective of Jacob,

  370. And his meeting with God here,

  371. And what God said to him,

  372. As Jacob prepared to go,

  373. Down into the land of Egypt.

  374. Believers need reassurance,

  375. From time to time.

  376. We all need reassurance,

  377. And our great reassurance,

  378. Comes from God Himself,

  379. Primarily.

  380. That is the kind of reassurance,

  381. We require.

  382. Now that's not contrary,

  383. To faith.

  384. Just because somebody needs reassurance,

  385. Or comes to God with certain questions,

  386. About an unknown future,

  387. That doesn't mean,

  388. Even if there's fear accompanying it,

  389. And some doubt accompanying it,

  390. Doesn't mean it's not real faith.

  391. Faith needs to be assured.

  392. The believer needs to be assured,

  393. I should say.

  394. And that happens all the way through the Bible.

  395. You find people coming to Jesus Himself,

  396. With questions relating to the future,

  397. The disciples especially were anxious,

  398. About Jesus no longer being physically with them.

  399. He had told them that he had to go away,

  400. That it was expedient for them.

  401. They couldn't,

  402. Of course,

  403. Then understand that at the time.

  404. And so they came to him,

  405. With perplexed minds,

  406. And you'll find in John's gospel,

  407. Especially these great chapters,

  408. Verse 15,

  409. 16,

  410. 14,

  411. 15,

  412. 16,

  413. 17,

  414. The way in which Jesus addressed that fear,

  415. And especially,

  416. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  417. You believe in God.

  418. You believe also in me.

  419. And here is Jacob,

  420. Leaving Egypt,

  421. Leaving,

  422. To go to Egypt,

  423. Leaving Canaan,

  424. And taking his journey with all that he had,

  425. On his way to Egypt,

  426. To go back to sea,

  427. To go down there to see Joseph,

  428. Who he thought for many years was dead.

  429. And here his heart revived again.

  430. It's hard to imagine just how he must have felt,

  431. When this news came to him,

  432. That Joseph was still alive.

  433. And not only was Joseph still alive,

  434. He was under Pharaoh,

  435. The most important man in Egypt.

  436. He was in charge of Egypt.

  437. He was a ruler in Egypt.

  438. And when it came to him,

  439. That this was indeed the case,

  440. When he saw the evidence for himself,

  441. The goods that Joseph had sent to him,

  442. The spirit of Jacob revived.

  443. And he said,

  444. It's enough.

  445. Joseph, my son, is still alive.

  446. I will go and see him before I die.

  447. And as he came to take his journey,

  448. God came to meet with him.

  449. And God spoke to him in visions of the night,

  450. And said,

  451. Jacob, Jacob.

  452. And he said,

  453. Here am I.

  454. And then he said,

  455. I am God,

  456. The God of your father.

  457. God came to address a very real fear

  458. In Jacob's mind,

  459. In Jacob's heart.

  460. What would be the point of trying to reassure him

  461. If there was no fear there to begin with?

  462. And it may well be that

  463. What had been passed on,

  464. Because we believe that,

  465. Of course,

  466. His father Isaac,

  467. And grandfather Abraham,

  468. Would have passed on much of what they themselves

  469. Had come to learn from God

  470. During the course of these long years.

  471. And one of the things that

  472. God revealed to Abraham

  473. Was that

  474. His descendants would be

  475. In Egypt,

  476. Would be in Egypt

  477. At a very difficult time.

  478. In chapter 15,

  479. You find God revealing this to Abraham.

  480. Know for certain

  481. That your offspring

  482. Will be sojourners

  483. In a land that is not theirs

  484. And will be servants

  485. By which he meant slaves there

  486. And they will be afflicted

  487. For four hundred years.

  488. But I will bring judgment

  489. On that nation.

  490. It will appear that

  491. I'm sure that

  492. That was passed on to

  493. His son Isaac

  494. And then on to his son

  495. That he would pass on

  496. Orally these great teachings

  497. From God

  498. That had come to them.

  499. And you can really understand

  500. Why there might be

  501. In Jacob's mind

  502. A certain anxiety.

  503. He had reasons to be anxious.

  504. Was this going to be something

  505. That enveloped him

  506. If he went down to Egypt?

  507. Was this going to be

  508. The beginning of troubles?

  509. Were the things that were revealed there

  510. To Abraham

  511. Going to start with him?

  512. Going down to Egypt?

  513. At that stage

  514. He wouldn't know.

  515. But here God comes

  516. To address his mind

  517. And address his anxiety.

  518. And notice how he calls him

  519. Jacob

  520. Jacob

  521. Personally

  522. He comes

  523. To this individual

  524. Jacob

  525. He's got all of these

  526. Other people with him

  527. But he's coming now

  528. Especially to him

  529. To address his

  530. Sense of anxiety

  531. As he's going down to Egypt

  532. With all of those people

  533. With him

  534. And all his goods.

  535. And he says

  536. Jacob

  537. Jacob

  538. You see Jacob

  539. Like ourselves

  540. Had a specific need

  541. At that time

  542. And God came to him

  543. Not in a general fashion

  544. But he came to him

  545. To address that specific need

  546. And to speak into that specific need

  547. To assure and to reassure Jacob

  548. That he need not be afraid

  549. And that very personal call

  550. Jacob

  551. Jacob

  552. Showed Jacob

  553. That God already knew everything about him

  554. And when you come to have

  555. Your own heart

  556. And it's anxiety

  557. Brought before God

  558. When you come before God

  559. And you receive

  560. From the Bible

  561. That reassurance

  562. That you're seeking

  563. At least you're praying

  564. That that assurance

  565. Or reassurance

  566. Would be your

  567. God doesn't go to somebody else with it

  568. God doesn't say

  569. Well I'll tell so and so

  570. I'll tell your minister

  571. And then he'll come and tell you

  572. Or I'll tell your elders

  573. It comes to yourself

  574. That's why you've got a Bible

  575. In your possession

  576. So that you'll hear God

  577. Speaking to you through it

  578. That's why it's such a wonderful privilege

  579. To have that particular word of God here

  580. And of course you find similarly

  581. When Jesus came to Peter

  582. And he said to him

  583. Simon, Simon

  584. Luke 22

  585. Simon, Simon

  586. Satan has desired to have you

  587. That he might sift you as wheat

  588. He meant his desire to have all of you disciples

  589. So that he might sift you like wheat

  590. Just scatter you

  591. Like you scatter wheat into the air

  592. To get rid of the dross

  593. He's desired to have you

  594. That's Jesus coming to Peter

  595. And saying

  596. Simon, Simon

  597. Individually

  598. You, personally

  599. I want to tell you this

  600. Satan has desired to have you

  601. But I have prayed for you

  602. I've prayed for you

  603. And today

  604. And tonight

  605. And always

  606. If we are Christ

  607. Then we are inside

  608. His intercession

  609. We are inside

  610. What he is setting before

  611. God the Father

  612. What he himself

  613. Is committed to

  614. To protect us

  615. And to keep us

  616. And to guide us

  617. Well here he says

  618. Jacob

  619. Jacob

  620. And Jacob

  621. Responds here

  622. Am I

  623. That brings us really to the crux of our study this evening

  624. Where Jacob

  625. Hears the voice of God

  626. And said

  627. I am God

  628. I am God

  629. Now you can pause there

  630. Because these words themselves

  631. Are really special

  632. And very important

  633. And very powerful

  634. Because what God is saying is

  635. This is the fundamental point

  636. That you have to remember

  637. This is what you must have

  638. Underlying all your thoughts

  639. Jacob

  640. Whatever lies in the future for you

  641. Never depart in your mind

  642. From this great fact

  643. I am God

  644. And the word God there in Hebrew

  645. Is the word El

  646. Which you find attached to many Hebrew names

  647. Elijah

  648. Elusha

  649. All of these names beginning with El

  650. El is the name for God

  651. And it particularly in Hebrew

  652. That shortened form

  653. Means

  654. God Almighty

  655. It has an emphasis on God's

  656. Almightyness

  657. On God's power

  658. On God's ability

  659. That limitless

  660. Eternal

  661. Ever unchanging

  662. Ability and power

  663. Of God

  664. And there is this

  665. Jacob hearing God

  666. Saying to him

  667. I am

  668. God

  669. I am God

  670. The mighty God

  671. The omnipotent God

  672. The omnipotent God

  673. That's who I am

  674. He's saying

  675. Why is he saying this

  676. To Jacob

  677. Why is that his introduction

  678. Because he's going on to say

  679. What that means

  680. And it's working out

  681. In the future of

  682. Of

  683. Of Jacob

  684. As he will go down to Egypt

  685. Spend some time there

  686. And experience things there

  687. I am

  688. God

  689. I am

  690. El

  691. A psalm we sang together

  692. Psalm 3

  693. Brings similar matters

  694. Before us

  695. The psalmist

  696. As we sang there

  697. Really saying

  698. In his

  699. His prayer to God

  700. He is saying

  701. Lord how many

  702. Are my foes

  703. Many are rising up

  704. Against me

  705. Many are saying

  706. Of my soul

  707. There is no salvation

  708. For him

  709. In God

  710. But

  711. You

  712. You oh Lord

  713. Are a shield

  714. About me

  715. My glory

  716. And the oblifter

  717. Of my head

  718. You know it doesn't really

  719. Matter in a sense

  720. To any

  721. Great extent

  722. What somebody says to you

  723. What somebody's

  724. Opposition to you

  725. Might be

  726. What anxieties

  727. May come into your mind

  728. And whatever source

  729. They may be from

  730. What you really want to hear

  731. Addressing

  732. That is God

  733. Saying to you

  734. And God assuring you

  735. I am God

  736. I am ill

  737. I am the almighty one

  738. What he's effectively

  739. Saying

  740. To

  741. To Jacob here is

  742. I am God

  743. You're going to go down

  744. To Egypt

  745. But I'm the master

  746. Of Egypt

  747. Egypt is in my hand

  748. Just as Canaan is

  749. I'm the boss

  750. When it comes to Egypt

  751. Not Pharaoh

  752. So don't be afraid

  753. To go down to Egypt

  754. I am God

  755. Not Pharaoh

  756. Not the Egyptians

  757. I am God

  758. You know in 1 Kings

  759. In chapter 17

  760. Remember that incident

  761. With Elijah

  762. Where Elijah was

  763. At the brook

  764. Kerith

  765. He was being fed

  766. There

  767. Ravens brought him

  768. Food

  769. And then God

  770. Came to him

  771. And he said to him

  772. Get up from here

  773. And go to Zarephath

  774. A city in Sidon

  775. For I have commanded

  776. A widow woman there

  777. To feed you

  778. To look after you

  779. Just think about that

  780. Here is Elijah

  781. By the brook

  782. Kerith

  783. Being cared for

  784. By God

  785. Through aspects

  786. Of the creation itself

  787. Of the natural world

  788. And here is God

  789. Saying to him

  790. Get up from here

  791. You need to move

  792. From here

  793. You need to go

  794. To Zarephath

  795. And what are you

  796. Going to find

  797. In Zarephath

  798. Elijah

  799. You're going to find

  800. A woman

  801. Already prepared

  802. By God

  803. To look after you

  804. You know

  805. In other words

  806. Wherever you go

  807. In life

  808. If God is your guide

  809. If God is your God

  810. Wherever you go

  811. In life

  812. If this mighty

  813. Ale is on your side

  814. If this God

  815. Who introduces himself

  816. And says

  817. I am God

  818. You can be sure

  819. Not only is he

  820. Looking after you

  821. Where you are

  822. But he's going

  823. To be ahead of you

  824. Wherever you go

  825. And he's going

  826. To make preparation

  827. For you

  828. As he sees your need

  829. As he sees fit

  830. And so he's saying

  831. Don't be afraid

  832. Because I

  833. Am God

  834. What is making you

  835. Anxious tonight

  836. Where is the anxiety

  837. In your heart

  838. Coming from

  839. Is it something

  840. In your own life

  841. Personally

  842. Is it something

  843. Happening in the world

  844. Or in our community

  845. Or in your family

  846. Or in your neighborhood

  847. That brings you

  848. That anxiety

  849. Is it a loved one

  850. That's a source

  851. Of anxiety

  852. To you

  853. Well here is God

  854. Saying to you

  855. I

  856. Am God

  857. It's all within

  858. Who I am

  859. As God

  860. And what I am

  861. And the fact

  862. That I am God

  863. Means that

  864. In your

  865. Particular

  866. Personal

  867. Circumstances

  868. All that I am

  869. Can be directed

  870. To look after you

  871. To guide you

  872. To comfort you

  873. To assure you

  874. To bless you

  875. You know

  876. God being with

  877. His people

  878. Is a great truth

  879. For us to actually

  880. Have comfort from

  881. But not only

  882. Is it the fact

  883. That God

  884. Is with us

  885. We'll see more

  886. Of that in a minute

  887. But there is also

  888. The fact that

  889. God actually

  890. Is always ahead of us

  891. Always

  892. Ahead of you

  893. You never have to

  894. Have God

  895. Catch up with you

  896. But sometimes

  897. We have to catch up

  898. With God

  899. And come to realize

  900. Well yes

  901. That preparation

  902. Has been made for me

  903. It's just like God said

  904. I

  905. Am God

  906. But then he went on

  907. To say I am God

  908. The God of your father

  909. He didn't just

  910. Introduce himself

  911. As God

  912. The mighty one

  913. He added to that

  914. I am the God

  915. Of your father

  916. I'm your covenant God

  917. I'm the God

  918. Who has entered

  919. Into covenant

  920. With your father

  921. Your grandfather

  922. And others before them

  923. And that covenant

  924. Is a covenant

  925. To which God

  926. Is committed

  927. A covenant

  928. Which would involve

  929. Which involves

  930. So much blessing

  931. So many assurances

  932. And as we said earlier

  933. All that would have been

  934. Passed on to Jacob

  935. From his father Isaac

  936. And grandfather Abraham

  937. That this God

  938. Was a God

  939. Of covenant

  940. And covenant blessings

  941. And covenant mercies

  942. And covenant

  943. Privileges

  944. Abraham

  945. You remember

  946. Himself went down

  947. To Egypt

  948. And he was afraid

  949. He was afraid

  950. That the Egyptians

  951. Would see that

  952. Because his wife

  953. Was very beautiful

  954. Sarai

  955. They would take her

  956. And something would

  957. Happen to him

  958. Perhaps even be killed

  959. And so he

  960. Made a pact

  961. With Sarai

  962. And said

  963. Don't say that

  964. You're my wife

  965. Tell them

  966. You're my sister

  967. That came out

  968. Of fear

  969. An unneeded fear

  970. On the part

  971. Of Abraham

  972. And it didn't work

  973. Well for him

  974. Never does

  975. When we pass

  976. Something off

  977. As untruth

  978. Or even as a

  979. Half truth

  980. As it was then

  981. He didn't tell

  982. The whole truth

  983. And so that fear

  984. That was in Abraham

  985. Some of that

  986. Might have been

  987. Here in

  988. Jacob's heart

  989. As well

  990. As we said

  991. The prospect

  992. Of going down

  993. To Egypt

  994. Especially the prospect

  995. As we said earlier

  996. That maybe that

  997. Would involve him

  998. In what had been

  999. Revealed to Abraham

  1000. Would happen

  1001. To his descendants

  1002. But God

  1003. Is committed

  1004. To his covenant

  1005. People

  1006. And his covenant

  1007. Promises

  1008. And wherever

  1009. God has promised

  1010. Something

  1011. You must never

  1012. Doubt that promise

  1013. You must never

  1014. Think that God

  1015. Is different

  1016. To what he has

  1017. Promised

  1018. That God is going

  1019. To change

  1020. His promises

  1021. That God is going

  1022. To suddenly not

  1023. Look after you

  1024. When all of

  1025. The way through

  1026. To this moment

  1027. He said

  1028. I am here

  1029. To look after you

  1030. I will guide you

  1031. I will keep you

  1032. I will bless you

  1033. And because

  1034. Something's happened

  1035. In your life

  1036. Or my life

  1037. That was unexpected

  1038. That doesn't mean

  1039. God has changed

  1040. Doesn't mean

  1041. His promises

  1042. Are no longer valid

  1043. Doesn't mean

  1044. He's no longer

  1045. Trustworthy

  1046. That's what the devil

1047. Will try and persuade you of

  1048. That's what the world

1049. Will try and persuade you of

  1050. That's what the psalmist

  1051. Had in Psalm 23

  1052. In Psalm 3

  1053. As we sang

  1054. How many say

  1055. There is no help

  1056. For him in God

  1057. The world's influence

  1058. Pouring into his mind

  1059. And saying

  1060. What's the point

  1061. Of actually trusting

  1062. In God

  1063. And of course

  1064. Then he realized

  1065. Well God's actually

  1066. My protector

  1067. He's my shield

  1068. He's the one

  1069. Who looks after me

  1070. And always will

  1071. I am the God

  1072. Of your father

  1073. I am your covenant

  1074. God

  1075. I am God

  1076. I am the God

  1077. Of your father

  1078. And then he goes

  1079. Into reasons

  1080. More in more detail

  1081. As to why Jacob

  1082. Need not

  1083. And must not

  1084. Be afraid

  1085. I am the God

  1086. Of your father

  1087. Do not be afraid

  1088. To go down

  1089. To Egypt

  1090. He didn't just

  1091. Leave it at saying

  1092. I am God

  1093. So don't be afraid

  1094. He added

  1095. In his kindness

  1096. Other things to that

  1097. That would actually be

  1098. Experienced by Jacob

  1099. Do not be afraid

  1100. For there

  1101. I will make you

  1102. Into a great nation

  1103. Now there's something

  1104. Here is a man

  1105. Who's been told

  1106. Through what's been

  1107. Passed by his father

  1108. And grandfather

  1109. That is descend

  1110. That his people

1111. The people he belongs to

  1112. Are going to be

  1113. In great distress

  1114. In Egypt

  1115. They're going to be

  1116. Slaves in Egypt

  1117. They're going to be

  1118. Mistreated

  1119. They're going to be

  1120. There for a long

  1121. Long time

  1122. And here is God

  1123. Saying to him

  1124. There I will make

  1125. You a great nation

  1126. Now somebody reading

  1127. That or hearing

  1128. That might say

  1129. But God

  1130. Didn't you say

  1131. That there were

  1132. Going to be

  1133. All of these years

  1134. When these people

  1135. Of Abraham

  1136. And Isaac

  1137. And Jacob

  1138. And their descendants

  1139. Would be intensely

  1140. Persecuted

  1141. And in distress

  1142. And afflicted

  1143. How can it be

  1144. That they're going

  1145. To be multiplied

  1146. That they're going

  1147. To actually increase

  1148. That they're going

  1149. To be made

  1150. Into a great nation

  1151. There

  1152. Yes they're going

  1153. To be made

  1154. Into a great nation

  1155. But surely

  1156. It's when they

  1157. Come out

  1158. And end up

  1159. In Canaan

  1160. At last

  1161. Whenever that will be

  1162. Surely that's where

  1163. They're going to

  1164. Become a great nation

  1165. No that's not

  1166. What God is saying

1167. There I will make you

  1168. A great nation

  1169. God knew very well

  1170. How they would be

  1171. Treated

  1172. Or mistreated

  1173. And yet here

  1174. He is assuring

  1175. Jacob

  1176. That's where

  1177. I'm going to

1178. Make you a great nation

  1179. That's where

  1180. You'll know

  1181. My blessing

  1182. In your descendants

  1183. That's where

  1184. You will know

  1185. That I am God

  1186. That I am the

  1187. God of your father

  1188. That's where

  1189. You will know

  1190. That the difficulties

  1191. The afflictions

  1192. Of Egypt

  1193. The persecution

  1194. Your people

  1195. Will experience

  1196. In Egypt

  1197. Is no barrier

  1198. To my making

  1199. My promise

  1200. Fulfilled

  1201. To make you

  1202. A great nation

  1203. Now there's

  1204. So much of that

  1205. That we can

  1206. Pass into

  1207. Our own

  1208. Situation as well

  1209. For example

  1210. We had a recent

  1211. Vision from SGA

  1212. Who told us

  1213. About the situation

  1214. In Ukraine

  1215. And how challenging

  1216. That situation is

  1217. In Ukraine

  1218. For them

  1219. With all that

  1220. Still going on

  1221. In Ukraine

  1222. From the oppressive

  1223. Regime in Russia

  1224. That are trying

  1225. To still press on

  1226. And overtake

  1227. People of Ukraine

  1228. The church in Ukraine

  1229. Is active

  1230. In all of these

  1231. Difficult circumstances

  1232. But we heard

  1233. We heard

  1234. With tremendous

  1235. Encouragement

  1236. For ourselves

  1237. And a sense

  1238. Of gratitude

  1239. To God

  1240. And a sense

  1241. Indeed

  1242. Of feeling

  1243. Absolutely humbled

  1244. By hearing

  1245. Of these things

  1246. That there are

  1247. Churches there

  1248. And they are

  1249. Queuing to get

  1250. Into the churches

  1251. Even under

  1252. Such situations

  1253. And perhaps

  1254. Because of

  1255. Such situations

  1256. God as he is

  1257. Blessing that

  1258. Situation to them

  1259. Is not saying

  1260. To them

  1261. Don't go to

  1262. Churches now

  1263. It's too dangerous

  1264. God's spirit

  1265. At work

  1266. In them

  1267. Is bringing

  1268. People to see

  1269. As we heard

  1270. From the SGA

  1271. Representative

  1272. Derek Maxwell

  1273. Is bringing

  1274. People to see

  1275. The things

  1276. Of this world

  1277. Can disappear

  1278. Just like that

  1279. And we need

  1280. Something

  1281. More than this

  1282. World can offer

  1283. Us

  1284. As a foundation

  1285. For life

  1286. And a foundation

  1287. For eternity

  1288. Where is it

  1289. It's in this

  1290. I am God

  1291. I am the God

  1292. Of your father

  1293. There I will

  1294. Make you into

  1295. A great nation

  1296. The God of blessing

  1297. The God of power

  1298. The God whose power

  1299. Ensures that

  1300. Even in the depths

  1301. Of oppression

  1302. In Egypt

  1303. Jacob's descendants

  1304. Will multiply

  1305. They will become

  1306. A great nation

  1307. Because God

  1308. Had said so

  1309. And because

  1310. God will do so

  1311. Now you take

  1312. That with you

  1313. Into

  1314. Your own life

  1315. As well

  1316. Into the history

  1317. And experiences

  1318. Of the church

  1319. Of God

  1320. Of ourselves

  1321. As a congregation

  1322. Or denomination

  1323. Of your own life

  1324. As an individual

  1325. Think of the challenges

  1326. The difficulties

  1327. The trials

  1328. The pains

  1329. You've already

  1330. Experienced

  1331. As a Christian

  1332. The things

  1333. That were not

  1334. Expected

  1335. That caused you

  1336. Some bewilderment

  1337. And that you

  1338. Found difficult

  1339. To adjust

  1340. To

  1341. Loss of loved

  1342. Ones

  1343. Other providences

  1344. That

  1345. Were surprising

  1346. Unexpected

  1347. And caused

  1348. Affliction

  1349. To some extent

  1350. In your life

  1351. But here is something

1352. You can go back to

1353. And I can go back to

  1354. I know it's not

  1355. Always easy

  1356. We have to

  1357. We have to readjust

  1358. Sometimes our

  1359. Vision and come back

  1360. To God

  1361. And to what God

  1362. Is saying

  1363. Rather than just

  1364. Let our own thoughts

  1365. Dictate as to how

  1366. The way ahead

  1367. Should be

  1368. Here is God

  1369. Saying to you

  1370. And to me

  1371. In all the

  1372. Difficulties of life

  1373. I am God

  1374. I am the God

  1375. Of your Father

  1376. I am your covenant

  1377. God

  1378. And there

  1379. There in your

  1380. Afflictions

  1381. I can do things

  1382. That you just

  1383. Could not

  1384. Possibly measure

  1385. Or possibly expect

  1386. Isn't that why

  1387. Paul wrote to the

  1388. Corinthians

1389. In the way he did

  1390. Our light

  1391. Affliction

  1392. Which is but

  1393. Temporary

  1394. Is working for us

  1395. A far more

  1396. Exceeding

  1397. And eternal

  1398. Weight

  1399. Of glory

1400. You see what he's doing

  1401. He's saying

  1402. Afflictions

  1403. These Corinthians

  1404. Knew affliction

  1405. Paul knew affliction

  1406. He knew the difficulties

  1407. Of and the challenges

1408. Of living as a Christian

  1409. And an apostle

  1410. In this world

  1411. But he calls them

  1412. Light afflictions

  1413. How can he possibly

  1414. Call them light afflictions

1415. When you read later on

1416. Of the list of things

  1417. That he went through

1418. In the providence of God

  1419. That hurt him deeply

  1420. That caused him

  1421. To find such suffering

  1422. In his life

  1423. As he cried out

  1424. To God from

1425. How can he call these

  1426. Light afflictions

1427. Well because he's putting it

  1428. In the balance

  1429. If you like

1430. And on the other side

  1431. There is

1432. The glory that's in Christ

1433. The glory that's in salvation

  1434. That exceeding

  1435. Weight

  1436. Of glory

  1437. And he says

  1438. These afflictions

  1439. Are working for us

  1440. By God's blessing

  1441. An eternal weight

  1442. Of glory

  1443. While we look not

  1444. At the things

  1445. Which are seen

  1446. But at the things

  1447. Which are unseen

  1448. For the things

  1449. Which are seen

  1450. Are temporal

  1451. Short lived

  1452. But the things

  1453. Which are unseen

  1454. Are eternal

  1455. And in a sense

  1456. That's what he's saying

  1457. To Jacob

  1458. Don't be afraid

1459. To go down to Egypt

  1460. For there

  1461. I will make you

  1462. Into a great nation

  1463. There is where

  1464. Jacob's people

  1465. Are going to multiply

  1466. What God has purposed

  1467. What God brings about

  1468. Can't be reversed

  1469. You could say

  1470. There's more power

  1471. In a gram

  1472. Of grace

  1473. Than in a ton

  1474. Of affliction

  1475. And that follows

  1476. Through

  1477. Into

  1478. The Christian life

  1479. Today

1480. But it's not just that

1481. I will go with you

1482. And I will make of you

  1483. There a great nation

  1484. I myself

  1485. Will go down

  1486. With you

  1487. To Egypt

  1488. It wasn't enough

  1489. For Jacob

1490. And it wasn't as far

  1491. As God was concerned

  1492. It wasn't enough

  1493. That he would say

  1494. To Jacob

  1495. Don't be afraid

  1496. To go to Egypt

1497. For there I will make you

  1498. Into a great nation

  1499. Full stop

1500. No he added to that again

  1501. I myself

  1502. Will go with you

  1503. What a remarkable statement

  1504. God

  1505. Going down

  1506. To Egypt

1507. To be with this man

  1508. Jacob

  1509. And that's what he's saying

  1510. I myself

  1511. Will go down

  1512. With you

  1513. To Egypt

  1514. He's not just going

  1515. To send an angel

1516. He's not going to send

  1517. A representative

  1518. From heaven

  1519. To accompany Jacob

  1520. To go with him

1521. And to be with him

  1522. In Egypt

  1523. I myself

  1524. Will go with you

  1525. Are there any words

  1526. More precious

  1527. In human experience

  1528. Than that

  1529. And God

  1530. Saying to his

  1531. Believing people

1532. I will go with you

  1533. Into your afflictions

  1534. Into your challenges

  1535. Into your difficulties

  1536. Into your trials

1537. I'll not just take you

  1538. To the borders

  1539. Of Egypt

1540. If you need to go

  1541. Right into Egypt

  1542. Jacob

  1543. As you need to

  1544. I will go down

  1545. With you

  1546. You'll find me

  1547. In Egypt

  1548. There are no barriers

  1549. To my entrance

  1550. To Egypt

1551. And so it is true

  1552. Still

  1553. You can depend

  1554. On God

  1555. To have his company

  1556. As he has promised

  1557. There are so many

  1558. Instances in the Bible

  1559. Of that

  1560. Daniel

  1561. The fiery furnace

  1562. You remember

  1563. Nebuchadnezzar's

  1564. Astonish

  1565. When he was astonished

  1566. That he had thrown

1567. Three of these Hebrew lads

  1568. Into the fire

1569. Not only were they not burnt

1570. But there was a fourth figure

1571. And he was just astonished

  1572. When he saw this

  1573. And he said

  1574. Did we not cast

  1575. Three men

  1576. Into the fire

  1577. But I see a fourth

  1578. And his appearance

  1579. Is like

1580. A son of the gods

  1581. I think we should

  1582. Translate it that way

  1583. Rather than

  1584. The son of God

  1585. His appearance

  1586. Is like

1587. A son of the gods

  1588. In other words

  1589. Nebuchadnezzar

  1590. Was astonished

  1591. At what he saw

  1592. And what astonished him

1593. As much as anyone else

  1594. Not as anything else

1595. Not just that these three men

1596. Were untouched by the fire

  1597. There was another person

  1598. And that person

  1599. Was divine

1600. There was something about him

1601. Different to the other three

  1602. The presence

  1603. Of the Lord

  1604. Was with them

  1605. Even there

  1606. I will make you

  1607. A great nation

  1608. All the way through

  1609. To

  1610. Matthew's

  1611. Jesus in Matthew 28

1612. Lo I am with you

1613. To the end of the age

  1614. Go into the world

  1615. And

  1616. Make disciples

1617. And I am with you

  1618. But if you remember

  1619. Moses

  1620. In Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  1621. Chapter 33

  1622. It's a wonderful passage

  1623. That personally

  1624. I've many often found

  1625. As

  1626. Something to enter

  1627. Into my own prayers

  1628. As well

  1629. Moses

  1630. In his

  1631. Speaking with God

  1632. There

1633. As they were going to

  1634. Move on

  1635. As a people

  1636. Here is Moses saying

  1637. Chapter 33

  1638. Of Exodus

  1639. And verse

  1640. 12

  1641. Moses said

1642. See now you say to me

  1643. Bring up this people

  1644. But you have not

  1645. Let me know

  1646. Whom you will send

  1647. With me

  1648. Yet you have said

1649. I know you by name

  1650. And you have also

  1651. Found favour

  1652. In my sight

  1653. Now therefore

  1654. If I have found

  1655. Favour in your sight

  1656. Please show me

  1657. Now your ways

1658. That I may know you

  1659. In order to find

  1660. Favour in your sight

  1661. Consider too

  1662. That this nation

  1663. Is your people

  1664. And God said

  1665. My presence

  1666. Will go with you

1667. And I will give you rest

  1668. And then what did

  1669. Moses say

  1670. Well he took

  1671. Encouragement from that

  1672. And he immediately said

  1673. If your presence

1674. Will not go with me

  1675. Do not bring us

  1676. Up from here

1677. For how shall it be known

  1678. That I have found

  1679. Favour in your sight

  1680. I and your people

  1681. Is it not

1682. In your going with us

1683. So that we are distinct

  1684. I and your people

  1685. From every other people

1686. On the face of the earth

1687. And the Lord said to Moses

  1688. This very thing

  1689. That you have spoken

  1690. I will do

  1691. You see

1692. God had said to them

  1693. Previously

  1694. Shortly before that

1695. Because of the grievous sin

  1696. Of this golden calf

  1697. That they had made

  1698. This image

  1699. That he would not

  1700. Go with them

  1701. That he would send

  1702. His angel

  1703. And Moses knew

  1704. Well we need more

  1705. Than an angel

  1706. Lord we need yourself

1707. And if you do not

  1708. Go with us

  1709. Don't take us up

  1710. Just leave us here

1711. What will be the point

  1712. And so for you

1713. And for me tonight too

  1714. Surely

  1715. That's what you find

  1716. Included in these words

  1717. To Jacob

  1718. I myself

  1719. Will go with you

  1720. Aren't you thankful

  1721. Tonight

  1722. To have all kinds

  1723. Of assistance

  1724. From God

  1725. Aren't you thankful

  1726. Tonight

1727. To read in the Bible

  1728. That the angels

  1729. Of God

  1730. Surround his people

  1731. That they accompany

  1732. His people

  1733. That they have

  1734. Manifested themselves

  1735. At times

  1736. To his people

  1737. But here's the most

  1738. Wonderful truth of all

1739. That God is with you

  1740. That God will always

  1741. Be with you

1742. That he will go with you

  1743. Into every Egypt

  1744. He has for you

  1745. In his providence

  1746. And that you will

  1747. Know him there

  1748. As the God

  1749. Whose presence

  1750. Is invaluable

  1751. To you

  1752. And always

  1753. Will be

  1754. I am God

  1755. I am the God

  1756. Of your Father

  1757. I myself

  1758. Will go with you

  1759. Into Egypt

  1760. And then

1761. And I will bring you

  1762. Up again

  1763. I will bring you

  1764. Up again

1765. Not only am I God

  1766. And am I your

  1767. Covenant God

  1768. And not only

  1769. Is there with that

1770. That I will go with you

  1771. Into Egypt

  1772. But I won't leave you there

  1773. I will bring you

  1774. Up again

  1775. You see

  1776. There is God

  1777. Assuring

  1778. Jacob

  1779. As he's about to

  1780. Go on his journey

  1781. To Egypt

  1782. Egypt's not going

1783. To be your resting place

  1784. Jacob of course

  1785. Was buried in Canaan

  1786. And the people

  1787. That descended from him

1788. Having spent all of these years

  1789. Oppressed in Egypt

1790. Yet they were brought out

  1791. By God

  1792. And led onwards

1793. To the land of Canaan

  1794. The land of promise

1795. I will not leave you there

  1796. It's interesting

  1797. And it's significant

1798. That a number of times

  1799. In this passage

  1800. The word Israel

  1801. Is used along with

  1802. The word Jacob

1803. As well as the word Jacob

  1804. Israel of course

  1805. Being the name

  1806. That God gave

  1807. To Jacob

  1808. At a certain juncture

  1809. Before this

1810. And here is the word again

  1811. Israel

1812. Just putting us in mind

  1813. And anticipating really

1814. What you find in the book

  1815. Of Exodus onwards

  1816. That Israel means

1817. Not just Jacob in person

  1818. But his descendants

  1819. The people

  1820. That came from him

  1821. Israel took his journey

  1822. Then Jacob sent out

  1823. Set out from Beersheba

  1824. Here is Jacob

  1825. Being assured

  1826. That Egypt's not going

  1827. To be the final

  1828. Dwelling place

  1829. For himself

  1830. Or for his people

1831. And so it is too

  1832. With whatever afflictions

  1833. Come your way

  1834. God's not going

  1835. To leave you there

  1836. As Jeremiah found out

1837. And as he tells us

  1838. In his Lamentations

1839. In that great chapter 3

  1840. Of Lamentations

  1841. Though the Lord

  1842. Cause grief

  1843. Yet will he have

  1844. Compassion

  1845. According to his

  1846. Steadfast love

  1847. For he does not

  1848. Willingly afflict

  1849. Or grieve

  1850. The children of men

  1851. God doesn't bring us

  1852. Into afflictions

  1853. To leave us there

1854. They have their own use

  1855. And as they've made

  1856. As they are made

  1857. By God

  1858. A means by which

1859. We get to know him

  1860. Better

  1861. So the assurance

  1862. Is that's not

  1863. Your final resting place

  1864. That's not where

1865. I'm going to leave you

1866. I will take you up again

  1867. And that ultimately

  1868. Of course

  1869. Applies to death itself

  1870. Because you have

  1871. The language here really

  1872. Which in other parts

  1873. Of the Bible

1874. Is used as the language

  1875. Of resurrection

1876. I will bring you up again

1877. I will raise you again

1878. I will bring you up

  1879. Out of Egypt

1880. So if you think of

  1881. Egypt as a temporary

  1882. Place for Jacob

  1883. To dwell in

  1884. A place of oppression

  1885. A place of difficulty

  1886. For his descendants

1887. I'm not going to leave you

  1888. There God is saying

1889. I will bring you up again

  1890. And so you find

1891. Jesus in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  1892. You remember his teaching

  1893. There saying

  1894. In verse 40 especially

1895. Where he spoke of himself

  1896. In that chapter

1897. As the bread of life

  1898. And where he came

  1899. In verse 40

1900. For this is the will

  1901. Of my father

  1902. That everyone

1903. Who looks on the son

  1904. And believes in him

  1905. Should have eternal life

1906. And I will raise him up

  1907. On the last day

  1908. I will bring

1909. His body back up again

  1910. On the last day

1911. I will raise him up

1912. I will not leave him

  1913. In the grave

1914. They will come to be with me

  1915. God says in heaven

1916. And you see he's saying

  1917. In a marvelous way

  1918. Of finishing this

  1919. Just allow me to

  1920. To say this point

  1921. In verse 4

  1922. I myself will bring

1923. I will go down with you

  1924. To Egypt

  1925. And I will also

  1926. Bring you up again

  1927. And Joseph's hand

  1928. Shall close your eyes

  1929. That's so beautiful

  1930. Because this man

  1931. Jacob had said

  1932. Of his son Joseph

  1933. He is undoubtedly dead

1934. When you go to chapter 37

  1935. And in 37 verse 35

1936. Just read the words there

  1937. Of Jacob

  1938. In chapter 37

  1939. 35

  1940. Well in 33

  1941. He identified the garment

  1942. As the son's robe

  1943. Joseph's robe

  1944. He said

1945. A fierce animal has devoured him

  1946. Joseph is without doubt

  1947. Torn to pieces

1948. Then Jacob tore his garments

1949. And put sackcloth on his loins

1950. And mourned for his son

  1951. For many days

  1952. All his sons

  1953. And all his daughters

1954. Rose up to comfort him

  1955. But he refused

  1956. To be comforted

  1957. And said

  1958. No

1959. I shall go down to Sheol

1960. I shall go down to the grave

  1961. To my son

  1962. Mourning

  1963. And here he is

  1964. In chapter 46

  1965. What a difference

1966. To what he had envisaged

  1967. And feared

  1968. I shall go down

  1969. To the grave

  1970. Mourning

  1971. With my son

  1972. And here's God

  1973. Saying to him

  1974. Joseph

  1975. Shall close your eyes

  1976. In other words

  1977. He's saying to Jacob

  1978. When you die

  1979. Joseph will be there

1980. And the closing of your eyes

  1981. In death

  1982. Most people die

  1983. Or some people anyway

  1984. With their eyes open

  1985. They pass away

1986. Their eyes need to be closed

  1987. Then by somebody there

1988. Just to take their eyelids

  1989. And close them down

  1990. Joseph

  1991. Shall close your eyes

  1992. He'll be there

1993. To take care of your need

  1994. When you die

  1995. Don't be afraid

1996. To go down to Egypt

1997. And don't you be afraid

  1998. Of the future

  1999. Don't be afraid

  2000. Of the future

  2001. For yourself

  2002. Personally

  2003. If you're in Christ

  2004. Tonight

  2005. You have no need

  2006. To be afraid

  2007. All of this

  2008. Your property as well

  2009. Don't be afraid

  2010. As a congregation

2011. Of looking into the future

2012. Unknown as though it is

  2013. To a great extent

  2014. Don't be afraid

  2015. I am God

  2016. He says

  2017. I am the God

  2018. Of your fathers

2019. I will go with you

  2020. I will take you

  2021. Back up again

2022. I will not leave you

2023. I will be there for you

  2024. All the way through

  2025. And of course

  2026. The Bible itself

2027. Closes with the wonderful words

  2028. Of

  2029. Or more or less

  2030. Closes the wonderful words

  2031. Of Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  2032. Chapter 21

2033. They're not exactly the same

2034. As what you find here

  2035. In Genesis 46

  2036. But

  2037. There's a very close relationship

  2038. I'm sure you'll be able

  2039. To work that out

  2040. For yourself

  2041. Where the final order

  2042. Of things

  2043. In heaven

  2044. Is revealed

  2045. To John

  2046. I heard a loud voice

  2047. From the throne

  2048. Saying

  2049. Behold

  2050. The dwelling place

  2051. Of God

  2052. Is with man

  2053. God's presence

  2054. Is now with man

  2055. This is heaven

2056. He will dwell with them

  2057. And they will be

  2058. His people

  2059. And God himself

  2060. Will be with them

  2061. As their God

  2062. He will wipe away

  2063. Every tear

  2064. From their eyes

  2065. And death

  2066. Shall be no more

  2067. Neither shall there be

  2068. Mourning

  2069. Nor crying

  2070. Nor pain

  2071. Anymore

  2072. For the former things

  2073. Have passed away

  2074. So for you

  2075. As a Christian

  2076. Whoever closes

  2077. Your eyes

  2078. In death

  2079. Physically

  2080. In a higher sense

  2081. Jesus will do

  2082. That spiritually

  2083. And when you arise

  2084. From the grave

  2085. There'll be no mourning

  2086. No crying

  2087. No tears

  2088. God himself

  2089. Will wipe away

  2090. Every tear

  2091. Every tear

  2092. What a hope

  2093. What a prospect

  2094. What a God

  2095. You see

  2096. Your God

  2097. Your God

  2098. Your ale

  2099. Your covenant God

  2100. Your protector God

  2101. The God

2102. The God of your future

2103. As well as the now

  2104. And the past

  2105. Let's pray

  2106. Almighty God

  2107. We thank you

  2108. For every assurance

  2109. You give us

  2110. Of the sovereign care

  2111. That you have

  2112. For your people

  2113. Bless us then

  2114. Tonight

  2115. Lord we pray

  2116. Make us to know

  2117. That we are indeed

  2118. Under the care

  2119. Of this great God

  2120. The God of covenant

  2121. Promise

  2122. And blessing

  2123. The God of power

  2124. And might

2125. The God who is faithful

  2126. To his every promise

  2127. Lord we pray

  2128. That you would speak

2129. To us out of your word

  2130. And especially

  2131. At times of anxiety

  2132. Times when we may

  2133. Question things

2134. Times when we may doubt

2135. Times when we may be afraid

  2136. O Lord

  2137. Calm our hearts

  2138. We pray

  2139. By giving us

  2140. A renewed vision

  2141. Of yourself

  2142. Of your greatness

  2143. Of your grace

  2144. Of your love

  2145. Of your steadfast love

  2146. And of your own

  2147. Presence with your people

  2148. On into eternity

  2149. Bless any tonight

  2150. Who have not

  2151. As yet come

  2152. To give themselves

  2153. Into your hand

  2154. Who have not come

  2155. To trust in you

2156. Who have not yet come

  2157. To leave the world

  2158. And come into Christ

  2159. Lord bless them

  2160. We pray as well

  2161. Not only here

  2162. But elsewhere

  2163. And guide us

  2164. Continually through

  2165. The path of life

  2166. And receive us

  2167. Finally at last

  2168. Into your own

  2169. Everlasting mansions

  2170. For Jesus' sake

  2171. Amen

  2172. Our final psalm

  2173. This evening

  2174. Is

  2175. Psalm 118

  2176. Psalm 118

  2177. That's in the

  2178. Scottish Psalter

  2179. Page 397

  2180. The tune is

  2181. Colesill

  2182. Verses 1-6

  2183. O praise the Lord

  2184. For he is good

  2185. His mercy lasteth ever

  2186. Let those of Israel

  2187. Now say

  2188. His mercy faileth never

  2189. Now let the house

  2190. Of Aaron say

  2191. His mercy lasteth ever

  2192. Let those that fear

  2193. The Lord now say

  2194. His mercy faileth never

2195. And then in verses 5 and 6

  2196. Again talking of distress

  2197. And how the Lord

  2198. Answered his cry

2199. He in a large place

  2200. Did me set

  2201. From trouble

  2202. Made me free

  2203. The mighty Lord

  2204. Is on my side

2205. I will not be afraid

2206. For anything that man can do

2207. I shall not be dismayed

  2208. These words

  2209. O praise the Lord

  2210. O praise the Lord

  2211. For he is good

  2212. His mercy lasteth ever

  2213. Let those of Israel

  2214. Let those of Israel

  2215. Say

  2216. His mercy faileth never

2217. Let the hearts of Aaron

  2218. Say

  2219. His mercy lasteth ever

  2220. Let those of Israel

  2221. What the Lord

  2222. him say

  2223. His mercy faileth never

  2224. His mercy faileth never

  2225. In distress

  2226. Doshint James

  2227. hall

2228. The Lord may answer me.

2229. The evil earth's place did me stay.

2230. From trouble made me free.

2231. The mighty Lord is on my side.

2232. I will not be afraid.

2233. For anything that man can do, I shall not be afraid.

2234. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right this evening.

2235. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore.

  2236. Amen.

  2237. Amen.

  2238. Amen.

  2239. Amen.

  2240. Amen.

  2241. Amen.
