  1. Thank you very much indeed, Callum, and it's a great privilege to be here with you this evening.

  2. It's lovely to see you all again, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to help Callum out and to be with you tonight.

  3. When I mentioned to Carloway this morning that I was preaching in Stornoway tonight, somebody said to me,

  4. are you preaching James McKeever out?

  5. And I hadn't really thought of that.

  6. No, I'm not really here to do that, but I do want to take the opportunity to give my very, very best wishes to James and Donna

  7. and to express my sincere thanks for all that he's done for the congregation here,

  8. but also for the church more widely in many, many years of faithful service to the Lord.

  9. Well, we're here to worship God together, and we rejoice that we come together in the name of our risen Saviour, Jesus.

  10. And we're going to sing to his praise from Psalm 95 in the Scottish Psalter on page 357.

  11. Psalm 95 in the Scottish Psalter, page 357, singing verses 1 to 6.

  12. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  13. Come, let us, everyone, a joyful noise make to the rock of our salvation.

  14. And that's the amazing privilege that we have as we gather to worship again this evening.

  15. We are coming together.

  16. We are singing to the Lord.

  17. We are bringing our joyful noise before him.

  18. So we'll do that as we stand and sing together.

  19. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  20. Come, let us, everyone, a joyful noise make to the rock of our salvation.

  21. Let us, everyone, a joyful noise.

  22. Make a joyful noise.

  23. For God, a great God and great King, above all gods he is.

  24. The Lord, a great God and great King, above all gods he is.

  25. Yes, God.

  26. Together you more, a brings ofこの zeal.

  27. At Christ, Peter.

  28. You know a gráfic illustrator.

  29. It sing to this church.

  30. You may what?

  31. O come, please, all thoughts it suaắtest.

  32. O come and let us worship him, let us bow down with all.

  33. And honor it before the Lord, our maker let us call.

  34. Let's pray together.

  35. Father, we are so thankful that we can come to you this evening, that we can come and gather together publicly,

  36. that we can meet together in the name of your son, Jesus, and that we can come together knowing that you've promised to be here.

  37. And as we come into your presence, we come to worship you.

  38. We come before you, our maker.

  39. We come to bow down before you.

  40. And we are so, so thankful that we have this privilege.

  41. It's such a brilliant way for us to start a new week, to come together morning and evening on the first day of the week,

  42. to rejoice in the reality of Jesus's resurrection,

  43. to come together and to be renewed and refreshed in the joy and peace and hope of the gospel,

  44. and to be reminded of everything that you have done for us through your son.

  45. We're so thankful that we can come here to worship you, knowing that you're present with us,

  46. that by your spirit you are always with us, that you've promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

  47. You've promised to be with us all the days to the very end of the age.

  48. And Father, we just thank you for that so much because we acknowledge before you tonight that we need you so, so much.

  49. And so often we wonder and we go our own way and we come tonight confessing our sin before you.

  50. We come acknowledging that our thoughts and our words and our actions are so often short of what your word commands.

  51. So often we do stuff that we should not do and we fail to do the things that we should.

  52. And we're frustrated and disappointed in ourselves.

  53. And we come to you with repentant hearts, confessing our sins.

  54. But we also come on the, we come standing not on our own strength,

  55. but we come standing on the promises of the gospel,

  56. that the blood of Jesus Christ washes away every sin.

  57. And that in you we can have perfect redemption.

  58. And in you we can have healing and cleansing and restoration.

  59. And so we come so thankful that the gospel gives us hope.

  60. And we come, Father, and you to be,

  61. to be, for our hearts to be cleansed and renewed and refreshed

  62. in the truth and the joy of the gospel of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  63. And so we come to worship you and we come also to hear your voice.

  64. And we pray, Father, that you'd be preparing our hearts to hear your word.

  65. We pray that we would be receptive to it, that our minds would be attentive,

  66. that we would have understanding, that we'd be able to see how we can apply your word to our lives.

  67. And we pray that your word would be pressed right into our hearts

  68. so that it would shape the way that we think and the way that we speak and the way we react

  69. and the things that we aim for and the things that we long for would all be shaped by your word.

  70. And so we pray that you would speak to every single one of us

  71. and that your word would be reaching each one of us

  72. and we know that your word will not return to you empty.

  73. We thank you for everybody who's here tonight.

  74. We pray, Father, that your blessing would be upon each one.

  75. And we come all from very different circumstances.

  76. And we come with just this week will have been different for all of us.

  77. For some, it might have been a really good week.

  78. For some, a really hard week.

  79. For some, maybe a mixture of joys and sorrows.

  80. And we come to you with different burdens and different fears, different doubts, different anxieties.

  81. And we just come and lay it all before you.

  82. And, Father, we don't want to hide anything from you.

  83. We know that we can't and we don't want to.

  84. We just want to lay our hearts open before you.

  85. And we pray for every single person here that every single one would hear your voice speaking to them

  86. and would know the nearness of your presence.

  87. And that you would draw us all closer to you.

  88. That for all of us who are following you, that we would be renewed and refreshed in our walk as disciples.

  89. For those who have maybe wandered from you or feel that their faith is fading

  90. or that their love is growing cold.

  91. We pray that you would renew them and refresh them and wrap your arms around them and you tonight.

  92. And for any here who maybe do not yet know you, for those who are seeking you,

  93. or for those who are maybe just really not sure at all.

  94. We pray, Father, that you would open our eyes and reveal yourself to us

  95. in the most powerful way that we've ever experienced.

  96. And that your word would just press into all of our hearts

  97. and that you would meet with us and speak to us and draw us closer to you.

  98. We pray for the congregation here that you would bless them in all the work that they are doing.

  99. And as they reach such a significant milestone with James retiring,

  100. we pray for the congregation that they would be so aware that pastors are always only ever under shepherds,

  101. that the great shepherd is Jesus Christ and he is the same yesterday, today and forever.

  102. And may they know the stability of your promises and your presence.

  103. And we pray that as they look ahead to the future, as they seek your guidance,

  104. we pray that they will be renewed and energized and strengthened for the work that you've given them to do.

  105. And we pray for all the work of the gospel here,

  106. that this congregation would continue to be a beacon of hope and light and joy to the town of Stornoway.

  107. And we pray that the years to come would be years of great renewal and refreshing for this congregation

  108. and for the whole town, that there would be spiritual awakening

  109. and that the reality of eternity would be pressed onto people's hearts

  110. and that people would come to hear the good news of Jesus

  111. and come to find the hope and the peace and security that only he can give.

  112. And so please bless the work of the gospel here.

  113. We pray for James and Donna, that you would bless them abundantly as they move into this new chapter.

  114. And we pray that their retirement would be a refreshing time,

  115. but also a very, very fruitful time as they continue to serve you.

  116. And we pray too for Colm and for Joanne as they serve you here,

  117. that they would be upheld and strengthened by you

  118. and that you'd bless all the work that they're doing for you.

  119. And everybody else involved in the congregation, the elders and deacons,

  120. everybody involved in the different activities that happen each week,

  121. we pray that they'd be renewed, encouraged, energized and strengthened by you

  122. as they continue the work of the gospel here.

  123. And what we pray for this congregation, we pray for the church worldwide.

  124. And we thank you that as we gather this evening,

  125. we gather as part of a family of believers that extends all across the world.

  126. And we pray that you would build up your church all across the nations.

  127. And we pray that you would especially help those who are facing opposition and persecution,

  128. but also maybe help those churches in areas where they've maybe felt things declining over recent years.

  129. We pray for renewal and we pray that your church would just thrive this week and in all the weeks that lie ahead.

  130. We pray all of these things, Father, so that your name would be glorified.

  131. And we pray that this week and every week of our lives would be lived for you.

  132. And we ask that you would bless us anew and have mercy on us in our time together just now.

  133. We pray in Jesus' name.

  134. Amen.

  135. Amen.

  136. We're going to sing again this time from the Sing Psalms version of Psalm 57,

  137. and that's on page 75.

  138. Sing Psalms version of Psalm 57, and we're going to sing from verse 7 to the end of the psalm.

  139. My heart is steadfast, Lord, with music I will sing.

  140. Awake, my soul, wake harp and lyre, my song the dawn will bring.

  141. If you know Psalm 57, you'll know the early part of it speaks a lot about being in distress and calling out to God for help.

  142. And then these last verses just speak of the assurance and stability that God gives us in his great love.

  143. So we'll stand and sing verses 7 to 11 to God's praise.

  144. My heart is steadfast, Lord, with music I will sing.

  145. Awake, my soul, wake harp and lyre, my song the dawn will bring.

  146. Among the nations, Lord, to you I will give praise.

  147. Among the peoples of the earth, my songs of you I'll raise.

  148. Great is your steadfast love, which reaches to the sky.

  149. Your constant faithfulness, O Lord, extends to heaven high.

  150. Above the highest ends, O God, exalted thee.

  151. And over all the earth, the hope, display your majesty.

  152. Reading this evening is from Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  153. Thank you.

  154. Matthew 11, and we'll read the whole chapter together.

  155. When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  156. Now, when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him,

  157. Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?

  158. And Jesus answered them, Go and tell John what you hear and see.

  159. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, and lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear.

  160. And the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

  161. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.

  162. As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John.

  163. What did you go out into the wilderness to see?

  164. A reed shaken by the wind?

  165. What then did you go out to see?

  166. A man dressed in soft clothing?

  167. Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king's houses.

  168. What then did you go out to see?

  169. A prophet?

  170. Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

  171. This is he of whom it is written,

  172. Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.

  173. Truly, I say to you, among those born of women, there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.

  174. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

  175. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,

  176. and the violent take it by force.

  177. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John,

  178. and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.

  179. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  180. But to what shall I compare this generation?

  181. It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates.

  182. We played the flute for you, and you did not dance.

  183. We sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.

  184. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, he is a demon.

  185. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, look at him,

  186. a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  187. Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.

  188. Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done,

  189. because they did not repent.

  190. Woe to you, Chorazin!

  191. Woe to you, Bethsaida!

  192. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  193. they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

  194. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  195. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?

  196. You will be brought down to Hades.

  197. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom,

  198. it would have remained until this day.

  199. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment

  200. for the land of Sodom than for you.

  201. At that time, Jesus declared,

  202. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  203. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding

  204. and revealed them to little children.

  205. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  206. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,

  207. and no one knows the Son except the Father,

  208. and no one knows the Father except the Son,

  209. and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  210. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

  211. and I will give you rest.

  212. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  213. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  214. and you will find rest for your souls.

  215. For my yoke is easy,

  216. and my burden is light.

  217. Amen.

  218. May God add his blessing to the reading of his word.

  219. Well, before we come back to that chapter,

  220. we're going to sing again,

  221. this time from Psalm 36 in the Scottish Psalter

  222. on page 251.

  223. Psalm 36 on page 251,

  224. singing from verse 5.

  225. Thy mercy, Lord, is in the heavens.

  226. Thy truth doth reach the clouds.

  227. Thy justice is like mountains great.

  228. Thy judgments deep as floods.

  229. Five to nine,

  230. and we'll stand and sing together to God's praise.

  231. Thy mercy, Lord, is in the heavens.

  232. Thy truth doth reach the clouds.

  233. Thy justice is like mountains great.

  234. Thy judgments deep as floods.

  235. Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

  236. How precious is thy grace.

  237. Therefore, in shadow of thy wings,

  238. and sons their trust shall place.

  239. They with the badness of thy heart

  240. shall be well satisfied.

  241. From rivers of thy pleasures,

  242. the will drink to them provide.

  243. Because of life,

  244. the fountain pure

  245. remains alone with thee.

  246. And in that purest light of thine,

  247. we clearly light shall see.

  248. Amen.

  249. Just as we turn to God's word,

  250. let's pray for a moment.

  251. Father, we pray that as your word is open before us,

  252. that we will be open before you.

  253. Please give us ears to hear.

  254. Please give us minds that understand.

  255. And please give us hearts that burn with love for you

  256. and for one another.

  257. Amen.

  258. Well, I'd like us to turn together to Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  259. And I want us to look at the whole chapter.

  260. So as we start,

  261. perhaps we can read again the very first verse

  262. and then the last couple of verses as well.

  263. So starting at verse 1, we read,

  264. when Jesus had finished instructing his 12 disciples,

  265. he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  266. And then going all the way down to verse 28,

  267. we hear the very famous words that Jesus said,

  268. Come to me,

  269. all who labor and are heavy laden,

  270. and I will give you rest.

  271. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  272. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  273. and you will find rest for your souls.

  274. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  275. At this time in Jesus' ministry,

  276. he has sent his disciples out

  277. to go proclaiming the message of the kingdom of God.

  278. And you see in the previous chapter

  279. that Jesus spends a lot of time

  280. preparing his disciples for that work.

  281. They are to go out as his messengers.

  282. And as Jesus gets them ready,

  283. and as he prepares them to go out as his messengers,

  284. he warns them that as they go out

  285. with the message of the gospel,

  286. there's one thing that they and we

  287. are guaranteed to find

  288. in the mission field that we go into.

  289. They're going to find obstacles.

  290. Now, when we think about obstacles to Christianity,

  291. we can immediately think of opposition.

  292. So we think of people who are opposed to the gospel,

  293. people who are hostile to the church,

  294. and people who will deliberately try to hinder

  295. and oppress the work that Jesus

  296. has given his people to do.

  297. And that is a reality.

  298. That does happen.

  299. Jesus himself experienced it.

  300. The early church experienced it.

  301. And many Christians today around the world

  302. also experience it.

  303. But opposition, external opposition to the gospel

  304. is not the only obstacle that Christianity faces.

  305. And I think we can maybe even say

  306. that external opposition

  307. is not the biggest obstacle that we face.

  308. And I think one of the reasons we can say that

  309. is because if you look at the history of the church,

  310. one thing that you'll discover

  311. that's very, very true again and again

  312. is that when the church is oppressed,

  313. it actually grows.

  314. And the efforts to stop the advance of the kingdom

  315. has never, ever stopped Jesus

  316. from building his church.

  317. And so if we're thinking about obstacles

  318. in front of the gospel,

  319. stuff that happens out there

  320. and particularly hostility and opposition

  321. towards the gospel

  322. is not necessarily the biggest problem.

  323. And that's because there's other obstacles

  324. that can get away of the gospel.

  325. And that's exactly what we find

  326. in Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  327. We read that Jesus goes out preaching and teaching

  328. and as he does so,

  329. he encounters three big hurdles.

  330. And I want us to think about these together

  331. because we encounter exactly the same thing.

  332. We see these hurdles in the people around us

  333. and we also see them in our own hearts.

  334. And these are obstacles

  335. that will either stop us from coming to Jesus

  336. or if we are following Jesus,

  337. they will hinder us as we try to walk with him.

  338. What are they?

  339. Well, the three big obstacles

  340. we're going to think about tonight are

  341. being unsure,

  342. being unfust,

  343. and being unteachable.

  344. Unsure,

  345. unfust,

  346. unteachable.

  347. We see all of these in this chapter

  348. and so I'll explain a little bit more

  349. about what they mean

  350. to begin with

  351. and then we'll see what lessons

  352. we can learn from them.

  353. So number one,

  354. being unsure.

  355. We see that at the very beginning of the chapter.

  356. If you look again at verse two,

  357. we see,

  358. when John the Baptist heard in prison

  359. about the deeds of the Christ,

  360. he sent word by his disciples

  361. and said to him,

  362. are you the one who is to come

  363. or shall we look for another?

  364. John the Baptist is one of the most important figures

  365. in the Bible

  366. and it's important to remember

  367. that even though we read about John the Baptist

  368. in the early chapters of the New Testament,

  369. really John is the last of the Old Testament prophets.

  370. And as Jesus explains in this chapter,

  371. he is the messenger that is sent to announce

  372. that the Messiah is coming.

  373. And if you know about the story of John the Baptist,

  374. you'll know that he preached in the middle of nowhere

  375. but crowds flocked to hear him.

  376. He called people to repentance.

  377. He challenged the authorities

  378. who were oppressing people at that time.

  379. He baptized Jesus.

  380. He saw the Holy Spirit descend on him like a dove

  381. and he pointed people to Jesus saying,

  382. that's him.

  383. Behold,

  384. the Lamb of God.

  385. And so in terms of the Bible

  386. and in terms of theology,

  387. John the Baptist is a giant

  388. and yet here we find him doubting.

  389. He's unsure.

  390. Despite all that he saw,

  391. despite all that he experienced,

  392. now he's in prison

  393. and he's just not sure.

  394. And that obstacle of being unsure

  395. has been a huge challenge for the church ever since.

  396. It affects us as Christians so often.

  397. And so although I'm sure every believer in here

  398. can think of moments where things felt great,

  399. think of high moments in their experience

  400. when they felt confident and strong

  401. and so assured

  402. and so certain that God was there

  403. and so aware of his love.

  404. There's maybe times when you can think of that

  405. and yet I'm sure there's been many times

  406. when you thought,

  407. is this real?

  408. Can I be sure about this?

  409. Am I a Christian?

  410. Does God ever actually hear me?

  411. Is he even there?

  412. And for people who aren't yet Christians,

  413. I'm fairly confident

  414. that there are very few people,

  415. if anybody in here tonight,

  416. who says,

  417. I am philosophically hostile to Christianity.

  418. I object to it on philosophical grounds.

  419. I am opposed to that message

  420. and I am not willing to consider it.

  421. I doubt anybody in here is thinking like that

  422. but I am sure that there are people in here tonight

  423. or people watching online

  424. and they're saying,

  425. I'm just not sure.

  426. I'm not opposed to Christianity.

  427. In fact, I respect it.

  428. But I'm just not convinced.

  429. So often we face that obstacle of being unsure.

  430. Second obstacle Jesus encountered

  431. is the obstacle of people being unfussed.

  432. You see that in verse 16 and 17.

  433. Jesus says,

  434. But to what shall I compare this generation?

  435. It's like children sitting in the marketplaces

  436. and calling to their playmates,

  437. We played the flute for you

  438. and you did not dance.

  439. We sang a dirge

  440. and you did not mourn.

  441. Here, Jesus is describing the general public,

  442. the people that he has been encountering,

  443. this generation as he calls them,

  444. in verse 16.

  445. And then in verse 20 to 24,

  446. he talks about the towns

  447. where he has visited

  448. and where he's preached.

  449. And in describing these places,

  450. he doesn't say that they're hostile.

  451. He doesn't say that they're aggressive.

  452. He doesn't say that they're atheists.

  453. None of these are the problem.

  454. The big problem

  455. is that people just aren't bothered.

  456. So if a flute is played,

  457. they don't dance.

  458. If a dirge is sung,

  459. they don't mourn.

  460. In other words,

  461. the general public

  462. is just not that fussed.

  463. And that numbness

  464. in the public

  465. that means that

  466. the stuff that should make them

  467. either dance for joy

  468. or mourn

  469. just bounces off them.

  470. They're not interested.

  471. They're not fussed.

  472. They're not bothered.

  473. And instead,

  474. people are distracted,

  475. uninterested,

  476. indifferent.

  477. And of course,

  478. you can see straight away

  479. that it's exactly the same today.

  480. Don't ever think

  481. that Jesus lived

  482. in a different world

  483. from the world

  484. that we live in.

  485. It's exactly the same

  486. just now.

  487. Today,

  488. we are surrounded

  489. by a general public

  490. that is just not that fussed.

  491. that numbness.

  492. And that numbness

  493. is a huge,

  494. huge obstacle

  495. to the gospel.

  496. And so often we see that,

  497. that the life-changing message

  498. of Jesus,

  499. the best news

  500. that the world

  501. has ever heard

  502. is just lost

  503. in a fog

  504. created by,

  505. I don't know,

  506. the latest big celebrity news

  507. that's come out

  508. or the latest thing

  509. that we need to buy

  510. or the latest video

  511. that you need to see

  512. on TikTok

  513. or whatever it might be.

  514. It's so easy

  515. for us to stumble

  516. at the obstacle

  517. of being unfussed.

  518. And then the third obstacle

  519. that Jesus encountered

  520. in this chapter

  521. is people

  522. who were unteachable.

  523. You see that

  524. in verses 25 to 26.

  525. At that time,

  526. Jesus declared,

  527. I thank you, Father,

  528. Lord of heaven and earth,

  529. that you've hidden

  530. these things

  531. from the wise

  532. and understanding

  533. and revealed them

  534. to little children.

  535. Yes, Father,

  536. for such

  537. was your gracious will.

  538. In summing up everything

  539. in this chapter,

  540. Jesus gives this

  541. beautiful description

  542. of how God

  543. does not choose

  544. the intellectual elite

  545. of the day.

  546. He doesn't choose

  547. the experts

  548. to be the first recipients

  549. of the gospel.

  550. And as he does that,

  551. he insists

  552. that instead

  553. the gospel

  554. is being revealed

  555. to people

  556. who are like

  557. little children.

  558. It's not for the big,

  559. important,

  560. know-it-alls.

  561. It's for the people

  562. who will come

  563. like a child.

  564. And there's loads

  565. that we could say

  566. about that.

  567. I want to focus

  568. on the fact

  569. that these verses

  570. are revealing

  571. and reinforcing

  572. another massive obstacle

  573. to the gospel,

  574. the obstacle

  575. of being unteachable.

  576. For the religious leaders,

  577. for the intellectual elite,

  578. the fact that they were wise

  579. and understanding

  580. was not actually

  581. an advantage.

  582. It was an obstacle

  583. because it meant

  584. that they were

  585. unteachable.

  586. They thought they knew it all

  587. and so they weren't

  588. willing to listen.

  589. Jesus went to preach

  590. and teach

  591. in their cities.

  592. People ignored him

  593. because they didn't think

  594. that they needed

  595. to learn anything.

  596. And again,

  597. that's still a massive obstacle

  598. that we face today.

  599. Many people resist

  600. the teaching of Jesus

  601. not because they're

  602. aggressive and hostile

  603. but because

  604. when it comes to

  605. the big questions of life,

  606. they're already confident

  607. in their own answers.

  608. They're settled in their mind

  609. and they do not feel

  610. that they need to be taught

  611. by Jesus.

  612. And yet,

  613. the whole concept

  614. of being teachable

  615. is fundamental

  616. to being a disciple of Jesus.

  617. That's what the word

  618. disciple means.

  619. It means to be a learner.

  620. And that's exactly

  621. what we have to do

  622. in order to become disciples

  623. and in order to live

  624. as disciples.

  625. We need to learn

  626. from Jesus.

  627. But in order to learn,

  628. we need to be teachable.

  629. In order to be teachable,

  630. we need to acknowledge

  631. that there's stuff

  632. that we don't know.

  633. In order to acknowledge

  634. that there's stuff

  635. that we don't know,

  636. we have to admit

  637. our weaknesses.

  638. And that's maybe

  639. the hardest thing of all.

  640. So often,

  641. we're held back

  642. by the obstacle

  643. of being unteachable.

  644. And so these are

  645. the three big obstacles

  646. that you see in this chapter.

  647. Being unsure,

  648. being unfust,

  649. being unteachable.

  650. What's all of that

  651. teaching us tonight?

  652. Well, looking at

  653. these three categories,

  654. the obvious question

  655. that you can start with

  656. is saying,

  657. well, which one are you?

  658. Are you unsure?

  659. Or are you unfust?

  660. Or are you unteachable?

  661. And thinking,

  662. well, which one of these

  663. categories do I fall into?

  664. Am I like John the Baptist?

  665. Am I like the crowds

  666. that weren't responding?

  667. Am I like the religious

  668. elite that refused

  669. to listen?

  670. And we might think,

  671. well, maybe I'm more

  672. in this category.

  673. You might think of other people

  674. and think, well,

  675. they're definitely

  676. in that category.

  677. Do you know

  678. what the truth is?

  679. I think the truth is

  680. that rather than

  681. picking one,

  682. I think that

  683. in lots of different ways,

  684. we are all of them.

  685. These are traps

  686. that we all fall into.

  687. These are obstacles

  688. that we all trip up over.

  689. And that's true

  690. whether you're a Christian

  691. or whether you're not sure yet

  692. if you're a Christian

  693. or not.

  694. We all have times

  695. when we're unsure.

  696. John the Baptist had doubts.

  697. We're the same.

  698. We all have areas

  699. of our lives

  700. that are important to God

  701. but we're just not

  702. that fussed about.

  703. Things that we just

  704. try not to think about

  705. that we'd rather

  706. just stay numb to.

  707. And we all have ways

  708. in which we're unteachable.

  709. We've all got ways

  710. in which we'd far rather

  711. people listen to us

  712. than we would listen

  713. to them.

  714. And these obstacles

  715. are serious

  716. because they will

  717. prevent you

  718. from becoming a Christian

  719. if you're not yet a Christian.

  720. And they will hinder you

  721. in your walk with Jesus

  722. if you are already

  723. a believer.

  724. They'll spoil your relationship

  725. with your Savior.

  726. So what's the answer?

  727. What do we do?

  728. Well, when we talk

  729. about stuff like this

  730. it's very easy

  731. to start saying

  732. well, you need to

  733. rid your life

  734. of obstacles

  735. and you need

  736. to come to Jesus.

  737. And in many ways

  738. you think

  739. well that's maybe

  740. what the pattern

  741. of the chapter

  742. is saying

  743. because you've got

  744. that great call

  745. at the end

  746. where Jesus asks us

  747. to come to him

  748. and we're thinking

  749. okay, right

  750. I can see these hurdles

  751. in my life

  752. I need to overcome them

  753. and get back to Jesus.

  754. And so

  755. you kind of almost imagine

  756. you're on a journey

  757. home

  758. and you're crossing

  759. maybe you're going

  760. across the moor

  761. or something

  762. maybe it's just because

  763. I've driven from Carly

  764. I'm thinking in these terms

  765. but you've got to

  766. climb over

  767. all sorts of obstacles

  768. you've got to get over

  769. fences and ditches

  770. and walls

  771. and you'll get there.

  772. And so

  773. I could say to you

  774. if you can

  775. jump over the ditch

  776. of being unsure

  777. if you can push

  778. through the bog

  779. of being unfussed

  780. if you can break

  781. down the wall

  782. of being unteachable

  783. then you'll get

  784. to Jesus

  785. and then everything

  786. will be fine.

  787. I could stand here

  788. and say

  789. you need to overcome

  790. the obstacles

  791. and come to Jesus.

  792. It would be so easy

  793. to say that

  794. but I don't think

  795. that's what this chapter

  796. is saying

  797. and I don't think

  798. that that's what

  799. the gospel

  800. is telling us to do.

  801. the gospel

  802. is not saying

  803. overcome the obstacles

  804. and get to Jesus.

  805. The gospel

  806. is saying

  807. come to Jesus

  808. and the obstacles

  809. will disappear.

  810. And that's summed up

  811. in the amazing words

  812. that Jesus makes

  813. at the end

  814. of the chapter

  815. in verse 28.

  816. Come to me

  817. all who labor

  818. and are heavy laden

  819. and I will give you rest.

  820. Take my yoke upon you

  821. and learn from me

  822. for I am gentle

  823. and lowly in heart

  824. and you will find

  825. rest for your souls.

  826. Jesus is saying

  827. come to me

  828. and learn from me.

  829. And that's what

  830. we need to do

  831. when we face

  832. these obstacles

  833. we need to go

  834. straight to Jesus

  835. and learn from him.

  836. And these obstacles

  837. will disappear.

  838. So that means

  839. when you are unsure

  840. come to Jesus

  841. and learn from him.

  842. You see something

  843. so amazing

  844. in this chapter

  845. that when John's message

  846. of uncertainty

  847. comes to Jesus

  848. Jesus gives him

  849. such a brilliant reply.

  850. He says to them

  851. in verse 4

  852. go and tell John

  853. what you hear

  854. and see.

  855. The blind receive

  856. their sight

  857. and the lame walk.

  858. Lepers are cleansed

  859. and the deaf hear

  860. and the dead are raised up

  861. and the poor have good news

  862. preached to them

  863. and blessed is the one

  864. who is not offended

  865. by me.

  866. The key words are these

  867. go and tell them

  868. what you see

  869. and hear.

  870. In other words

  871. Jesus points

  872. the unsure person

  873. to objective

  874. verifiable truth.

  875. Now this is

  876. incredibly important

  877. in terms of

  878. our understanding

  879. of Christianity

  880. and our whole

  881. view of the gospel

  882. because so many people

  883. get this wrong.

  884. So many people

  885. think that faith

  886. is believing

  887. in something

  888. that's vague

  889. and mystical

  890. and something

  891. that doesn't

  892. necessarily tie in

  893. with the facts

  894. so we think

  895. well yes

  896. I've got facts

  897. over here

  898. but I've got

  899. my faith

  900. over here

  901. and I'm just

  902. going to hold

  903. on to that

  904. even though

  905. it doesn't

  906. align with the facts.

  907. That's not the gospel.

  908. That is not the gospel.

  909. That's not the way

  910. Christianity works.

  911. In fact

  912. if you want

  913. the best example

  914. of that kind

  915. of separation

  916. between faith

  917. and facts

  918. one place

  919. where you see it

  920. quite tragically

  921. is in secular

  922. humanism's

  923. approach to death

  924. because you will see

  925. people who are

  926. humanists

  927. whose world view

  928. is saying

  929. that there is no God

  930. that there is nothing

  931. supernatural

  932. that there is nothing

  933. beyond this life

  934. and yet when someone

  935. they love dies

  936. they will say

  937. that they're with us

  938. that they're watching

  939. over us

  940. that we'll meet again

  941. and I can completely

  942. understand why people

  943. are saying that

  944. because a cold

  945. harsh

  946. consistently secular

  947. view of death

  948. is something that

  949. very few people

  950. can actually live with

  951. but that idea

  952. that there's something

  953. that idea

  954. that we'll meet again

  955. that idea

  956. that there's

  957. another side

  958. that's not faith

  959. that's guessing

  960. faith in terms

  961. of how the Bible

  962. understands it

  963. is not guesswork

  964. it's not vague

  965. it's not blind

  966. it is grounded

  967. on objective

  968. verifiable truth

  969. and that's why

  970. when John comes

  971. with his doubts

  972. Jesus doesn't say

  973. to him

  974. keep the faith

  975. feel the energy

  976. be true to yourself

  977. and everything

  978. will be fine

  979. he doesn't talk

  980. like that

  981. instead Jesus

  982. says to the messenger

  983. go and tell John

  984. the facts

  985. about what you've

  986. seen

  987. and heard

  988. real blind people

  989. have received

  990. their sight

  991. real lame people

  992. walk

  993. real people

  994. who are lepers

  995. have been cleansed

  996. and it's all

  997. reminding us

  998. that the gospel

  999. is grounded

  1000. on objective

  1001. verifiable truth

  1002. in other words

  1003. it's grounded

  1004. on stuff

  1005. that's real

  1006. the miracles

  1007. of Jesus

  1008. really happened

  1009. the ministry

  1010. of Jesus

  1011. really happened

  1012. the betrayal

  1013. arrest

  1014. and crucifixion

  1015. of Jesus

  1016. really happened

  1017. and most importantly

  1018. of all the resurrection

  1019. of Jesus

  1020. really happened

  1021. these are

  1022. objective truths

  1023. they're real events

  1024. that really happened

  1025. and they're verifiable

  1026. through the historical record

1027. that the Bible gives us

  1028. and that's why

  1029. eyewitness testimony

  1030. is at the heart

  1031. of the gospel

  1032. it's the heart

  1033. at the heart

1034. of the New Testament's message

  1035. the New Testament

  1036. is not a collection

  1037. of religious meditations

  1038. it's an eyewitness record

  1039. Christianity

  1040. is not grounded

  1041. on stuff

  1042. that we hope

  1043. is true

  1044. it's grounded

  1045. on stuff

  1046. that is

  1047. true

  1048. and you might

  1049. be skeptical

  1050. of that

  1051. maybe you do

  1052. reject it

  1053. maybe you know

  1054. people

  1055. who reject it

  1056. if that's the case

1057. I want you to imagine

  1058. that Matthew

1059. was sitting next to you

  1060. right now

  1061. that he was sitting

1062. in the pew next to you

  1063. and if you're watching

  1064. at home

  1065. sitting on the sofa

  1066. beside you

  1067. and you could turn

  1068. to him and say

  1069. Matthew

  1070. see all this stuff

  1071. you wrote

  1072. it didn't happen

  1073. you were wrong

1074. I think if you said that

1075. Matthew would say to you

  1076. hold on a minute

  1077. I was there

  1078. I was there

  1079. and I saw it

  1080. and when John

  1081. comes to Jesus

  1082. with his doubts

  1083. and his uncertainty

  1084. that's what Jesus

  1085. is pointing him towards

  1086. verifiable

  1087. objective

  1088. truth

  1089. and the amazing

  1090. thing about this

  1091. you might think

  1092. why is Thomas

  1093. going on about this

  1094. the thing that's so

  1095. important about this

  1096. about objective

  1097. verifiable truth

  1098. is that it means

  1099. that no matter

  1100. how much you doubt

  1101. that has absolutely

  1102. no bearing

  1103. whatsoever

  1104. on the fact

  1105. that it's true

  1106. doubts don't

  1107. change facts

  1108. doubts don't

  1109. change the truth

  1110. some facts

  1111. some facts

  1112. are hard

  1113. to believe

  1114. I find it

  1115. hard to believe

  1116. that my heart

  1117. beats every single

  1118. second of my life

  1119. since my mother's womb

  1120. I find it hard

  1121. to believe that

  1122. that it's just

  1123. beating

  1124. when you're standing

  1125. here it's beating

  1126. more like this

  1127. and your heart

  1128. is beating

  1129. and beating

  1130. and beating

  1131. and beating

  1132. I find it hard

  1133. to believe

  1134. that in the last

  1135. 80 odd years

  1136. there's been

  1137. 7 billion

  1138. child births

  1139. on planet earth

  1140. but it's true

  1141. I find it hard

  1142. to believe

  1143. that there's

  1144. this thing

  1145. that I can't

  1146. taste

  1147. I can't see

  1148. I can't smell

  1149. I can't touch

  1150. I can't feel

  1151. and it keeps

  1152. all of us

  1153. on the ground

  1154. and in fact

  1155. it holds

  1156. the universe

  1157. and the orbiting

  1158. of planets

  1159. and everything

  1160. together

  1161. gravity

  1162. I find it hard

  1163. to sometimes

  1164. believe

  1165. that there's

  1166. this thing

  1167. that I can't

  1168. feel

  1169. that it can

  1170. still pull

  1171. me to the

  1172. ground

  1173. but my

  1174. doubts

  1175. have no

  1176. effect

  1177. whatsoever

  1178. on the fact

  1179. that these

  1180. things are

  1181. true

  1182. and that's

  1183. so true

  1184. about the

  1185. gospel

  1186. because your

  1187. doubts

  1188. which we

  1189. all have

  1190. your doubts

  1191. have no

  1192. effect

  1193. whatsoever

  1194. on the fact

  1195. that all of

  1196. this is

  1197. true

  1198. and that's

  1199. why if

  1200. you're unsure

  1201. Jesus is

  1202. saying come

  1203. to me

  1204. and learn

  1205. from me

  1206. learn the

  1207. facts

  1208. from me

  1209. everyone

  1210. doubts

  1211. the greatest

  1212. doubt

  1213. John the

  1214. Baptist

  1215. doubted

  1216. and he was

  1217. fulfilling

  1218. the prophetic

  1219. appearance

  1220. of Elijah

  1221. Elijah

  1222. doubted

  1223. as well

  1224. if you look

  1225. at his

  1226. life

  1227. these guys

  1228. all had

  1229. incredible

  1230. experiences

  1231. and you

  1232. have maybe

  1233. had incredible

  1234. experiences

  1235. but the

  1236. certainty

  1237. and the

  1238. high of

  1239. those

  1240. incredible

  1241. experiences

  1242. don't always

  1243. last the

  1244. distance

  1245. but what

  1246. will last

  1247. is objective

  1248. truth

  1249. the fact

  1250. that you

  1251. are safe

  1252. and the

  1253. fact that if

  1254. you're trusting

  1255. in Jesus

  1256. he is

  1257. everything

  1258. that you

  1259. need

  1260. often we

  1261. are plagued

  1262. by the

  1263. same question

  1264. as John

  1265. that question

  1266. shall I

  1267. look for

  1268. another

  1269. shall I

  1270. look for

  1271. another

  1272. so some

  1273. people find

  1274. that Jesus

  1275. is too

  1276. much for

  1277. them

  1278. and they're

  1279. like I

  1280. don't really

  1281. want to

  1282. know about

  1283. Jesus

  1284. and they

  1285. just

  1286. kind of

  1287. push him

  1288. away

  1289. I think

  1290. more

  1291. people

  1292. find that

  1293. Jesus is

  1294. not enough

  1295. for them

  1296. and that's

  1297. true for

  1298. Christians

  1299. and it's

  1300. true for

  1301. unbelievers

  1302. and we

  1303. feel this

  1304. need to

  1305. look for

  1306. another

  1307. we think

  1308. yes I've

  1309. got Jesus

  1310. but should

  1311. I look

  1312. for another

  1313. and so we

  1314. look for

  1315. security

  1316. in our

  1317. health

  1318. or in

  1319. our

  1320. possessions

  1321. we look

  1322. for a

  1323. sense of

  1324. self-worth

  1325. and identity

  1326. in what

  1327. other people

  1328. think of

  1329. us

  1330. we look

  1331. for attention

  1332. and affirmation

  1333. on social

  1334. media

  1335. we look

  1336. for hope

  1337. in politics

  1338. we look

  1339. for joy

  1340. in sport

  1341. and

  1342. if we are

  1343. doing that

  1344. if we are

  1345. looking for

  1346. meaning and

  1347. security and

  1348. hope and

  1349. peace in

  1350. another

  1351. it's because

  1352. we're looking

  1353. at Jesus

  1354. and we're

  1355. unsure

  1356. we're unsure

  1357. that he's

  1358. enough

  1359. and we

  1360. all do

  1361. that from

  1362. time to

  1363. time we

  1364. all struggle

  1365. with doubts

  1366. but if

  1367. you are

  1368. struggling

  1369. with doubts

  1370. if you're

  1371. a Christian

  1372. who is

  1373. struggling

  1374. with doubts

  1375. I want

  1376. you to

  1377. imagine

  1378. that right

  1379. now you

  1380. could do

  1381. what John

  1382. the Baptist

  1383. did

  1384. remember John

  1385. the Baptist

  1386. got one of

  1387. his friends

  1388. to say go

  1389. and ask

  1390. him

  1391. go and ask

  1392. him

  1393. and so I

  1394. want you to

  1395. imagine that

  1396. you can do

  1397. the same

  1398. imagine that

  1399. right now you

  1400. could send a

  1401. messenger to

  1402. Jesus in

  1403. heaven and

  1404. say are you

  1405. the saviour

  1406. who is to

  1407. come or

  1408. should I look

  1409. for another

  1410. am I really

  1411. safe and

  1412. secure with

  1413. you and

  1414. I think that

  1415. if you did

  1416. that Jesus

  1417. would say to

  1418. your messenger

  1419. go and tell

  1420. them what

  1421. you see and

  1422. hear and

  1423. your friend

  1424. would come

  1425. back saying

  1426. I saw

  1427. Jesus at

  1428. the right

  1429. hand of the

  1430. father and

  1431. I heard him

  1432. praying to

  1433. the father and

  1434. he mentioned

  1435. your name

  1436. loads of

  1437. times and

  1438. I saw your

  1439. name written

  1440. in permanent

  1441. ink in his

  1442. book of

  1443. life and

  1444. I saw

  1445. God the

  1446. father smile

  1447. when I

  1448. mentioned your

  1449. name and

  1450. I saw that

  1451. they were

  1452. preparing a

  1453. place for

  1454. you and

  1455. when you

  1456. think about

  1457. all that you

  1458. realize I

  1459. don't need to

  1460. look for

  1461. another in

  1462. Jesus I

  1463. have everything

  1464. that I

  1465. need

  1466. another way to

  1467. think about

  1468. it is to

  1469. ask the

  1470. question where

  1471. do you feel

  1472. you're most

  1473. special what

  1474. when I ask

  1475. that question

  1476. what pops

  1477. into your

  1478. head where

  1479. do you feel

  1480. that you're

  1481. most special

  1482. now there's

  1483. lots of

  1484. things that

  1485. make us

  1486. feel special

  1487. but where

  1488. do you feel

  1489. at your

  1490. most special

  1491. is it with

  1492. another so

  1493. is it when

  1494. you do well

  1495. at work and

  1496. you come on

  1497. thinking I've

  1498. done really

  1499. well at work

  1500. today is it

  1501. when you get

  1502. really good

  1503. results in

  1504. school is it

  1505. when you're

  1506. getting on

  1507. really well

  1508. with your

  1509. friends is it

  1510. when you go

  1511. and get

  1512. some exercise

  1513. is it when

  1514. you get lots

  1515. of attention

  1516. on social

  1517. media if

  1518. it is then

  1519. it means that

  1520. even if you're

  1521. a Christian you

  1522. don't understand

  1523. Christianity

  1524. well enough

  1525. yet because

  1526. the place

  1527. where you are

  1528. at your

  1529. most special

  1530. is when

  1531. Jesus is

  1532. looking at

  1533. you

  1534. that is

  1535. when you

  1536. are at

  1537. your

  1538. most

  1539. special

  1540. most

  1541. precious

  1542. because

  1543. you are

  1544. never

  1545. as special

  1546. anywhere

  1547. else

  1548. as you

  1549. are to

  1550. him

  1551. and all

  1552. of this

  1553. is reminding

  1554. us that

  1555. when we

  1556. are unsure

  1557. when we

  1558. feel like

  1559. our faith

  1560. is wobbling

  1561. we don't

  1562. need to

  1563. fix those

  1564. doubts

  1565. in order

  1566. to get

  1567. back to

  1568. Jesus

  1569. we just

  1570. need to

  1571. get back

  1572. to

  1573. Jesus

  1574. and come

  1575. to him

  1576. and learn

  1577. from him

  1578. and he

  1579. will take

  1580. all those

  1581. doubts

  1582. away

  1583. that's such

  1584. an important

  1585. reminder for

  1586. us as

  1587. Christians

  1588. and if

  1589. someone's

  1590. not yet

  1591. a Christian

  1592. when you

  1593. doubt

  1594. where do

  1595. you go

  1596. where do

  1597. you go

  1598. when you're

  1599. unsure

  1600. when you're

  1601. unsure

  1602. about life

  1603. and death

  1604. and time

  1605. and eternity

  1606. and life

  1607. and meaning

  1608. and purpose

  1609. and who

  1610. you really

  1611. are

  1612. if you are

  1613. unsure

  1614. about that

  1615. stuff

  1616. where do

  1617. you go

  1618. when you're

  1619. unfussed

  1620. is our

  1621. second hurdle

  1622. the second

  1623. ones are

  1624. much quicker

  1625. I won't be

  1626. as long

  1627. with these

  1628. when you're

  1629. unfussed

  1630. what do

  1631. you do

  1632. you come

  1633. straight to

  1634. Jesus

  1635. and learn

  1636. from him

  1637. now this

  1638. obstacle again

  1639. confronts us

  1640. as Christians

  1641. and it

  1642. confronts us

  1643. if we're

  1644. not yet

  1645. a Christian

  1646. and a good

  1647. way of

  1648. diagnosing

  1649. this question

  1650. of being

  1651. unfussed

  1652. is to

  1653. ask yourself

  1654. what makes

  1655. you mourn

  1656. and what

  1657. makes you

  1658. dance

  1659. what makes

  1660. you mourn

  1661. and what

  1662. makes you

  1663. dance

  1664. and all

  1665. too often

  1666. the answer

  1667. to those

  1668. two questions

  1669. is that

  1670. it's stuff

  1671. that actually

  1672. doesn't matter

  1673. very much

  1674. so if I

  1675. ask myself

  1676. the question

  1677. what makes

  1678. me dance

  1679. the answer

  1680. the instinctive

  1681. answer is

  1682. sport

  1683. so I

  1684. I was

  1685. hoping

  1686. that I'd

  1687. be dancing

  1688. on Friday

  1689. night

  1690. I was

  1691. actually

  1692. it was

  1693. a dirge

  1694. on Friday

  1695. night

  1696. when Scotland

  1697. played

  1698. Germany

  1699. but if Scotland

  1700. win if they can

  1701. get something

  1702. against Switzerland

  1703. and if they can

  1704. beat Hungary

  1705. I'll be dancing

  1706. in my heart

  1707. with joy

  1708. and it's the same

  1709. with lots of other

  1710. sporting things

  1711. I'm sure loads of

1712. people here are the same

  1713. but you know

  1714. it doesn't really

  1715. matter does it

  1716. it's not really

  1717. that important

  1718. and the same

  1719. same thing happens

  1720. in terms of mourning

  1721. except the other

  1722. way around

  1723. every day the news

  1724. is singing dirges

  1725. to us

  1726. of all sorts of

  1727. stuff that's going

  1728. on in the world

  1729. we see suffering

  1730. and injustice

  1731. and oppression

  1732. and yet I ask

  1733. myself

  1734. do I really mourn

  1735. when I see that

  1736. or does it just

  1737. bounce off me

  1738. I just

  1739. see it

  1740. again and again

  1741. and it just

  1742. bounces off me

  1743. and sometimes

  1744. I realise that

  1745. I dance about

  1746. things that don't

  1747. really matter

1748. and I fail to mourn

  1749. about things that do

  1750. Jesus responds

  1751. to that obstacle

  1752. of being unfussed

  1753. by talking about

  1754. a crucial

  1755. but probably

  1756. a surprising topic

  1757. he talks about

  1758. judgement

  1759. and so

  1760. if you are

  1761. unfussed

  1762. Jesus is saying

  1763. come to me

  1764. and learn

  1765. about judgement

  1766. now

  1767. you hear that

  1768. and you think

  1769. oh man

  1770. that sounds a bit

  1771. heavy

  1772. and we kind of

  1773. recoil from that

  1774. idea of judgement

  1775. and you know

  1776. when you look at

  1777. Matthew 11

  1778. you have these

  1779. beautiful words

  1780. at the end

  1781. where Jesus is saying

  1782. come to me

  1783. all who labour

  1784. and are heavy laden

  1785. and then you just

  1786. look a few verses

  1787. back and he's talking

  1788. about all sorts

  1789. of judgement

  1790. and you think

  1791. how can these

  1792. things go together

  1793. but we mustn't

  1794. come to that

  1795. conclusion

  1796. we mustn't

  1797. think that

  1798. these things

  1799. are incompatible

  1800. what we have

  1801. to remember

  1802. is judgement

  1803. is actually

  1804. an incredibly

  1805. precious thing

  1806. and I think

  1807. that we can

  1808. prove that

  1809. I think we can

  1810. prove that

  1811. judgement is

  1812. a very precious

  1813. thing

  1814. when we see

  1815. something that

  1816. is seriously

  1817. wrong in life

  1818. we don't hear

  1819. people say

  1820. we demand

  1821. judgement

  1822. people don't

  1823. tend to say

  1824. I want judgement

  1825. I need judgement

  1826. I long

  1827. for judgement

  1828. people don't

  1829. tend to say

  1830. that

  1831. instead they

  1832. say something

  1833. else

  1834. they say

  1835. we demand

  1836. justice

  1837. people see

  1838. something that's

  1839. seriously wrong

  1840. and they demand

  1841. justice

  1842. they crave

  1843. justice

  1844. they want

  1845. the wrong

  1846. to be put

  1847. right

  1848. but look at

  1849. those two

  1850. phrases

  1851. we demand

  1852. judgement

  1853. we demand

  1854. justice

  1855. what's the

  1856. difference

  1857. nothing

  1858. it's talking

  1859. about the

  1860. same thing

  1861. it's talking

  1862. about exactly

  1863. the same

  1864. thing

  1865. that means

  1866. that when

  1867. Jesus responds

  1868. to our

  1869. unfussedness

  1870. by teaching

  1871. about judgement

  1872. he's not

  1873. being harsh

  1874. or heavy

  1875. he's actually

  1876. talking about

  1877. something

  1878. that every

  1879. human heart

  1880. craves

  1881. humanity

  1882. shouts

  1883. we demand

  1884. justice

  1885. when we

  1886. see something

  1887. that's wrong

  1888. do you know

  1889. who demands

  1890. justice

  1891. most of

  1892. all

  1893. God

  1894. and that's

  1895. why the

  1896. day of

  1897. judgement

  1898. that this

  1899. chapter

  1900. speaks

  1901. about

  1902. is not

  1903. a day

  1904. of fire

  1905. and brimstone

  1906. and divine

  1907. brutality

  1908. it is a

  1909. day of

  1910. impeccable

  1911. justice

  1912. it's a

  1913. day when

  1914. everything

  1915. that's wrong

  1916. will be

  1917. called

  1918. to account

  1919. and all

  1920. of that

  1921. makes perfect

  1922. sense

  1923. what is the

  1924. one thing

  1925. that oppression

  1926. and injustice

  1927. need in order

  1928. to thrive

  1929. if you think

  1930. about a

  1931. society where

  1932. corruption

  1933. oppression

  1934. injustice

  1935. thrives

  1936. what's the

  1937. one thing

  1938. that's

  1939. needed for

  1940. that to

  1941. happen

  1942. you need

  1943. a society

  1944. where people

  1945. aren't

  1946. fussed

  1947. and they

  1948. just turn

  1949. a blind

  1950. eye

  1951. while all

  1952. these things

  1953. begin to

  1954. emerge

  1955. weeds

  1956. don't get

  1957. very far

  1958. in a

  1959. garden

  1960. if the

  1961. gardener

  1962. is very

  1963. fussy

  1964. but they'll

  1965. thrive

  1966. if he's

  1967. not bothered

  1968. and that's

  1969. why Jesus

  1970. responds to

  1971. the not

  1972. botheredness

  1973. of this

  1974. generation

  1975. by talking

  1976. about

  1977. judgement

  1978. and at

  1979. the heart

  1980. of that

  1981. is the

  1982. fact that

  1983. the

  1984. judgement

  1985. of God

  1986. is going

  1987. to put

  1988. right the

  1989. things

  1990. that are

  1991. wrong

  1992. that's

  1993. why God's

  1994. judgement

  1995. is such

  1996. a wonderful

  1997. thing

  1998. it's putting

  1999. right everything

  2000. that's wrong

  2001. and that's

  2002. why Jesus

  2003. is calling

  2004. these towns

  2005. and these

  2006. cities

  2007. and us

  2008. to repent

  2009. because repentance

  2010. is a turning

  2011. away from

  2012. injustice

  2013. it's a turning

  2014. away from

  2015. what's wrong

  2016. it's a turning

  2017. towards

  2018. Jesus

  2019. towards the

  2020. one who is

  2021. righteous

  2022. to his

  2023. very core

  2024. and it's all

  2025. reminding us

  2026. that to Jesus

  2027. right and wrong

  2028. matter

  2029. injustice and

  2030. oppression

  2031. matter

  2032. discrimination

  2033. and prejudice

  2034. matter

  2035. exploitation

  2036. and abuse

  2037. matter

  2038. if there's

  2039. one thing

  2040. that's true

  2041. about Jesus

  2042. it's that he

  2043. is never

  2044. ever

  2045. unfussed

  2046. and that's

  2047. why we need

  2048. to be so

  2049. careful

  2050. about finding

  2051. a false

  2052. security

  2053. in indifference

  2054. it's so easy

  2055. to think that

  2056. in terms of

  2057. what's true

  2058. and false

  2059. and right

  2060. and wrong

  2061. we're safer

  2062. to be unfussed

  2063. and maybe

  2064. there's people

  2065. in here

  2066. who are like

  2067. that

  2068. you've been

  2069. raised

  2070. to know

  2071. the gospel

  2072. you've been

  2073. raised to

  2074. think about

  2075. all of this

  2076. stuff

  2077. and you

  2078. think

  2079. yeah but

  2080. it's safer

  2081. I'm just

  2082. I'm not

  2083. going to

  2084. make a

  2085. conclusion

  2086. I'm not

  2087. going to

  2088. make a

  2089. judgment

  2090. I'm going

  2091. to stay

  2092. on middle

  2093. ground

  2094. we think

  2095. that's

  2096. safe

  2097. it's not

  2098. safe

  2099. it's not

  2100. safe

  2101. because right

  2102. and wrong

  2103. do matter

  2104. and the tragic

  2105. thing is that

  2106. being unfussed

  2107. is not simply

  2108. saying you know

  2109. I'm not going

  2110. to enforce

  2111. what I think

  2112. is right

  2113. being unfussed

  2114. is also

  2115. saying I'm

  2116. going to

  2117. turn a blind

  2118. eye

  2119. to stuff

  2120. that I

  2121. know

  2122. is wrong

  2123. and

  2124. we have

  2125. to apply

  2126. the same

  2127. kind of

  2128. consistency

  2129. to a

  2130. religious

  2131. position

  2132. as we

  2133. would

  2134. to the

  2135. ethical

  2136. situations

  2137. that we

  2138. see

  2139. in the

  2140. world

  2141. around

  2142. us

  2143. it's

  2144. so

  2145. easy

  2146. to

  2147. think

  2148. that

  2149. it's

  2150. safer

  2151. to be

  2152. indifferent

  2153. that

  2154. it's

  2155. better

  2156. to be

  2157. unfussed

  2158. it's

  2159. not

  2160. true

  2161. if you

  2162. were to

  2163. ask a

  2164. reporter

  2165. who is

  2166. in

  2167. Gaza

  2168. what do

  2169. you

  2170. think

  2171. of

  2172. everything

  2173. that's

  2174. going

  2175. on

  2176. here

  2177. would

  2178. you

  2179. want

  2180. their

  2181. answer

  2182. to

  2183. be

  2184. I'm

  2185. indifferent

  2186. and

  2187. on

  2188. the

  2189. day

  2190. of

  2191. judgment

  2192. if

  2193. God

  2194. asks

  2195. you

  2196. what

  2197. do

  2198. you

  2199. think

  2200. of

  2201. my

  2202. son's

  2203. death

  2204. do

  2205. you

  2206. want

  2207. your

  2208. answer

  2209. to

  2210. be

  2211. I'm

  2212. indifferent

  2213. there are

  2214. times when

  2215. we are

  2216. all far

  2217. too

  2218. unfussed

  2219. Jesus is

  2220. saying

  2221. come to

  2222. me

  2223. and learn

  2224. and then

  2225. last of

  2226. all

  2227. when we

  2228. are

  2229. unteachable

  2230. Jesus is

  2231. saying

  2232. come to

  2233. me

  2234. and learn

  2235. from

  2236. me

  2237. I'll be

  2238. very very

  2239. brief here

  2240. because

  2241. time

  2242. is

  2243. running

  2244. out

  2245. Jesus

  2246. is

  2247. telling

  2248. us

  2249. here

  2250. something

  2251. that's

  2252. so

  2253. important

  2254. he's

  2255. telling

  2256. us

  2257. that

  2258. the

  2259. answer

  2260. to

  2261. unteachableness

  2262. is to

  2263. come to

  2264. him

  2265. not to

  2266. stay away

  2267. from him

  2268. but to

  2269. come to

  2270. him

  2271. we must

  2272. come to

  2273. him

  2274. but if

  2275. we come

  2276. to him

  2277. we have

  2278. to come

  2279. to him

  2280. in a

  2281. certain

  2282. way

  2283. we have

  2284. to come

  2285. to him

  2286. like

  2287. children

  2288. that's

  2289. what

  2290. he's

  2291. saying

  2292. there

  2293. in

  2294. verse

  2295. 25

  2296. you've

  2297. hidden

  2298. these

  2299. things

  2300. from the

  2301. wise

  2302. and

  2303. understanding

  2304. you've

  2305. revealed

  2306. them

  2307. to

  2308. little

  2309. children

  2310. now we

  2311. can easily

  2312. think that

  2313. that's a bit

  2314. humiliating

  2315. and so

  2316. often

  2317. that's part of the

  2318. reason why we're

  2319. unteachable

  2320. because we

  2321. don't want

  2322. our insecurities

  2323. exposed

  2324. but the

  2325. truth is

  2326. coming to

  2327. Jesus

  2328. with a

  2329. childlike

  2330. teachableness

  2331. is not

  2332. humiliating

  2333. it is

  2334. liberating

  2335. because it

  2336. frees us

  2337. from feeling

  2338. like we need

  2339. to impress

  2340. it frees us

  2341. from the

  2342. pressure of

  2343. having all

  2344. the answers

  2345. it frees us

  2346. from the

  2347. feeling that

  2348. we have to

  2349. prove ourselves

  2350. and put on

  2351. this good

  2352. outward show

  2353. that makes

  2354. it look like

  2355. we understand

  2356. and look like

  2357. we're sorted

  2358. and it's all

  2359. amazing

  2360. it's all an

  2361. amazing reminder

  2362. that in order

  2363. to come to

  2364. Jesus you don't

  2365. need to know

  2366. everything about

  2367. the Bible

  2368. you don't need

  2369. to have all

  2370. sorts of

  2371. abilities

  2372. and skills

  2373. you don't need

  2374. to have some

  2375. kind of

  2376. amazing

  2377. experience

  2378. and you

  2379. definitely

  2380. don't need

  2381. to get

  2382. yourself up

  2383. to some

  2384. kind of

  2385. elite

  2386. standard

  2387. you just

  2388. need to

  2389. know

  2390. that you

  2391. need him

  2392. and then

  2393. you can

  2394. come to

  2395. him as

  2396. you are

  2397. in many

  2398. ways that's

  2399. the defining

  2400. characteristic

  2401. of a

  2402. child

  2403. it's that

  2404. they're

  2405. dependent

  2406. and that's

  2407. exactly how

  2408. we come

  2409. to Jesus

  2410. that's

  2411. exactly how

  2412. we live

  2413. our lives

  2414. as followers

  2415. of Jesus

  2416. we come

  2417. to him

  2418. as children

  2419. we come

  2420. with a

  2421. childlike

  2422. faith

  2423. and we

  2424. learn

  2425. from him

  2426. what's the

  2427. key difference

  2428. between a

  2429. child and

  2430. an adult

  2431. the key

  2432. difference

  2433. is that

  2434. children

  2435. grow

  2436. adults

  2437. don't

  2438. and that's

  2439. that's part

  2440. of what that

  2441. image of

  2442. coming to

  2443. Jesus as

  2444. a child

  2445. is teaching

  2446. us

  2447. we'll come

  2448. to him

  2449. come to him

  2450. in order to

  2451. learn

  2452. in order to

  2453. grow

  2454. in order to

  2455. never stop

  2456. growing

  2457. under his

  2458. care

  2459. and his

  2460. protection

  2461. so these

  2462. are three

  2463. big

  2464. obstacles

  2465. being unsure

  2466. being unfust

  2467. being unteachable

  2468. these are

  2469. obstacles that

  2470. we have to

  2471. be aware

  2472. of

  2473. and the

  2474. truth is

  2475. all three

  2476. of them

  2477. are

  2478. exhausting

  2479. being

  2480. unsure

  2481. is exhausting

  2482. always

  2483. worrying

  2484. always

  2485. doubting

  2486. always

  2487. uncertain

  2488. being

  2489. unfust

  2490. is exhausting

  2491. constantly

  2492. trying to

  2493. find a

  2494. distraction

  2495. to fill

  2496. our minds

  2497. so that we

  2498. don't have

  2499. to think

  2500. about the

  2501. big questions

  2502. of life

  2503. so that we

  2504. don't have

  2505. to be

  2506. confronted

  2507. by the

  2508. stuff that

  2509. really

  2510. matters

  2511. and being

  2512. unteachable

  2513. is exhausting

  2514. because we

  2515. have to

  2516. constantly

  2517. try and give

  2518. this impression

  2519. that we

  2520. know it

  2521. all

  2522. that we're

  2523. not silly

  2524. and that

  2525. we're not

  2526. going to

  2527. make a

  2528. mistake

  2529. and we've

  2530. got to

  2531. keep up

  2532. this big

  2533. wonderful

  2534. outward

  2535. appearance

  2536. of being

  2537. competent

  2538. and capable

  2539. and sorted

  2540. it's all

  2541. exhausting

  2542. and yet in

  2543. the face of

  2544. all of

  2545. these

  2546. Jesus

  2547. says

  2548. come to

  2549. me

  2550. and learn

  2551. from

  2552. me

  2553. and the

  2554. result

  2555. is that

  2556. you will

  2557. find

  2558. rest

  2559. you will

  2560. find

  2561. rest

  2562. for your

  2563. souls

  2564. if you

  2565. are

  2566. recognizing

  2567. the fact

  2568. tonight

  2569. that there

  2570. are times

  2571. and ways

  2572. that you're

  2573. unsure

  2574. unfust

  2575. and

  2576. unteachable

  2577. Jesus

  2578. is not

  2579. saying

  2580. sort

  2581. yourself

  2582. out

  2583. he's

  2584. saying

  2585. come

  2586. to

  2587. me

  2588. learn

  2589. from

  2590. me

  2591. and I

  2592. will

  2593. give you

  2594. rest

  2595. may God

  2596. grant that

  2597. we'd all

  2598. come to

  2599. him

  2600. amen

  2601. let's

  2602. pray

  2603. Lord

  2604. Jesus

  2605. we

  2606. acknowledge

  2607. that there's

  2608. times that

  2609. we're

  2610. unsure

  2611. and there's

  2612. times when

  2613. we're

  2614. unfust

  2615. and there's

  2616. lots of

  2617. times when

  2618. we're

  2619. unteachable

  2620. and we

  2621. just thank

  2622. you so

  2623. much that

  2624. you are

  2625. calling us

  2626. all to

  2627. come to

  2628. you

  2629. and so we

  2630. do that

  2631. together

  2632. just now

  2633. laying all

  2634. of these

  2635. obstacles

  2636. before you

  2637. and laying

  2638. our burdens

  2639. at your

  2640. feet

  2641. and we

  2642. rest in

  2643. you

  2644. in your

  2645. wisdom

  2646. your

  2647. goodness

  2648. and

  2649. your

  2650. indescribable

  2651. love

  2652. we thank

  2653. you so

  2654. much and

  2655. we pray

  2656. that every

  2657. one of

  2658. us would

  2659. be drawn

  2660. closer to

  2661. you tonight

  2662. and we

  2663. pray that as

  2664. we go into

  2665. a new

  2666. week we

  2667. be able

  2668. to live

  2669. every day

  2670. of that

  2671. week with

  2672. our eyes

  2673. fixed on

  2674. you

  2675. amen

  2676. we're going

  2677. to close

  2678. with sing

  2679. psalms

  2680. 34

  2681. singing from

  2682. verse 8

  2683. that's on

  2685. come taste

  2686. and see

  2687. the lord

  2688. is good

  2689. who

  2690. trusts

  2691. in him

  2692. is

  2693. blessed

  2694. oh fear

  2697. saints

  2698. with need

  2701. oppressed

  2702. we'll sing

  2703. 8 to

  2704. 14

  2705. and we'll

  2706. stand and

  2707. sing together

  2708. to god's

  2709. praise

  2710. come taste

  2711. and see

  2712. the lord

  2713. is good

  2714. who

  2715. trusts

  2716. in him

  2717. is

  2718. blessed

  2719. oh fear

  2720. the lord

  2721. you

  2732. grow

  2733. weak

  2734. and faint

  2735. and hunger

  2736. for their

  2757. listen

  2758. to

  2759. my

  2760. word

  2761. and

  2762. i

  2763. will

  2764. help

  2765. you

  2766. understand

  2767. how

  2768. you

  2769. may

  2770. fear

  2771. the

  2772. lord

  2776. in life

  2777. and long

  2801. what

  2812. it

  2813. with
