  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise. We're singing in Psalm 16,

  2. in the Sing Psalms version, Psalm 16 on page 16. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  3. Protect me, O my God, you are my refuge through. I said, you are my Lord, I have no good apart

  4. from you. The godly in the land for holiness renowned, they are the glorious ones in whom

  5. all my delight is found. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 7, and the tune is Selma.

  6. Amen.

  7. My Lord, I have no good apart from you. The godly in the land for holiness renowned, they are the glorious ones in whom

  8. all I delight is found. Their sorrows will increase, who on force God's divine.

  9. I will not sacrifice to them, their worship I define.

  10. O Lord, you are to me, my cup and portion sure. The shame that is assigned to me, you God and he,

  11. the Lord, I have no good apart from you. The Lord, I have no good apart from you. The Lord, I have no good apart from you.

  12. The Lord, I have no good apart from you. The Lord, I have no good apart from you. The Lord, I have no good apart from you.

  14. To me is God divine.

  15. I'll praise the Lord my God, whose counsel guides my choice.

  36. our people to yourself. And so we thank you that as your call is here this evening, it is also all

  37. around us, that you are a God who is calling our people near and far to come and follow you. For we

  38. see that your voice is heard, not just through your word as we have it before it, although we

  39. acknowledge that that is your special revelation to us. But we thank you too that you reveal

  40. yourself to us through your very creation, through the heavens and the earth and all that we see of

  41. your glory around us. For it reminds us that you are our maker, that you are our keeper, that you are

  42. the one who has made all things, that you are the one who will call all things to an end, that you are

  43. the one who has given our days to number them and to be wise with them. And so we pray this night,

  44. O Lord, that as we see and hear your call to us, that you will give us the heart to be obedient to

  45. that call, to hear it and to follow you. To follow you, Lord, through whatever paths you have in store,

  46. to follow you in whatever work you have for us, to call you above all to look to Jesus and to put

  47. our trust in him. And to know in him the one who is our security and our salvation,

  48. now and for eternity. And so we praise you for your call. We praise you for your word. And we ask

  49. your blessing anew on it this evening, that you will speak to each of us, not just collectively as a

  50. congregation, but individually, whether we are sitting here in the building, whether we are listening

  51. online, whenever we might hear your voice, that you would give us an ear to hear and a heart to respond.

  52. And so we pray, Lord, that you would bless us and watch over us as a people. We do pray, O Lord,

  53. that as we go forward from here, that you will be a God who leads us and guides us. We thank you for,

  54. as we come to your word this evening, the reminder of Abraham, who was one who you called,

  55. but also one who you led, one who you showed the way he was to go, the one who was able to look,

  56. not to the cities of this world, but to a city whose maker and builder was God. And we ask, O Lord,

  57. that you will give us the eyes of faith that Abraham had, and so many like him as well, that we would

  58. continue to fix our eyes on you, that you would be the one that would guide our every step and lead us

  59. in every way. And especially as we enter into a period of change as a congregation, as we think of a time

  60. of vacancy and the need to be led by you, we pray that you will give us a spirit of prayer,

  61. that you will fill our hearts, O Lord, with that longing to know you, to worship you, first and foremost,

  62. and then to seek you and to know your guidance, to know your help, to know you speaking to us as a

  63. people, as a congregation, as a community, that you would guide us, O Lord, that the vacancy would be

  64. filled in your time and by your person. So we ask, O Lord, that in all things we will look to you,

  65. and we thank you for all that we have around us to help and to encourage, that you give us that

  66. spirit of prayer, that spirit of unity, that bondness of encouragement to one another and

  67. loving one another. And we pray that you will increase these things in our midst, so that we

  68. will be a congregation that would be said of, that see how they love him, see how they love Christ,

  69. and how they love one another. And so we pray, Lord, for you to lead us in these ways. And we pray

  70. for the Reverend Colin McLeod as he will become into the moderator. We ask, O Lord, for help and

  71. strength to him in his own congregation and back, and also as he assists here as well. May he know your

  72. help and your strength throughout these days and months ahead. We pray too, Lord, for our leadership as

  73. a Kirk session and as a deacon's court. We pray, Lord, for you to give us wisdom and guidance

  74. and help in all our discussions going forward as well. We pray that you will unite us together.

  75. We pray for a vacancy committee as it's formed. We ask, O Lord, for your wisdom in that

  76. and for guidance among all of us as a congregation to consider prayerfully who will come and preach,

  77. who we would long to have among us, who would be a shepherd over us. So, Lord, we pray for your

  78. blessing and your help in that. We thank you, Lord, that your promise is that you will be with us, and we

  79. pray that we will keep hold of your promises at all times. And we ask above all, Lord, for your ministry,

  80. for your gospel work to flourish in our midst. As was once said, there is no such thing as a vacant

  81. congregation when God is in their midst. And we thank you for that, that your work goes on,

  82. that we are a people serving you in the gospel. And we pray that that good news, that glorious news

  83. of Jesus will be proclaimed by us all far and wide, that throughout our homes and our communities, that we

  84. will share that word with one another and those who come around us as well, whether it's in our homes,

  85. in our workplaces, in our communities at large, even those who pass us by at times, who we maybe only

  86. see for a glimpse in a moment. Give us that boldness to speak. As we think of the gospel needs that are

  87. around us, Lord, we thank you for all who serve in our midst, and we pray that you will strengthen

  88. and encourage men and women, boys and girls who help in so many different ways. We thank you for

  89. that willing spirit in our midst, and we pray that that will increase all the more, that we will be

  90. united together for your cause here. We pray for your wider churches as well. We thank you for

  91. your kingdom as it is being built. We pray for congregations throughout our own presbytery,

  92. each one, O Lord, that they may know your blessing and your presence in their midst. We particularly

  93. remember other congregations coming into vacancy at this time as well. We remember the congregation

  94. in Grava. We ask your blessing on them, that they will again know your leading and guiding in these

  95. days ahead. We pray for Reverend David McLeod, who is to be intermoderated over them. May you bless

  96. them and uphold him. May you guide them and bless them too. And we remember Iamacritchie and his

  97. induction on Friday evening, last Friday evening, to Greyfriars and Inverness. We thank you for that

  98. occasion as we enjoyed our time here, that they enjoyed that time as well. And we pray for him

  99. as he takes up the ministry there, and that the congregation and preacher would be blessed by you.

  100. May you encourage them and be with them throughout these days ahead as well. We pray for our

  101. denomination as a whole, O Lord. We pray for the ministry of your word throughout our land and far and

  102. wide, that you would bless it to all ends of the earth, that the promises of your word would be

  103. fulfilled to all ends, to the north, the south, the east and west, that you would call a people to

  104. yourself. Remember all who minister in so many different ways. We think of Muriel in Cambodia.

  105. We again commit her to your care and keeping. Thankful for the opportunities to meet with her over the

  106. soon. We pray for that meeting on Tuesday, God willing, that you will bless it, that you will

  107. bless her and hear our prayers for her and answer according to your will. Remember all our people,

  108. and especially our schools and children at this time, as a time of holiday is upon us. May you watch

  109. over people as they travel to and fro, our own as they go away, and visitors who come into our midst.

  110. We pray for safety and blessing. We pray for refreshing and encouragement in these weeks of

  111. holiday. We thank you for our schools, and we thank you for all the teachers. We pray for each one of

  112. them, Lord, to know your spirit upon them, to know your goodness with them. We pray for our schools to be

  113. a place of refuge, a place of your spirit abiding and the beauty of the Lord being seen. We know we hear

  114. so often different stories, but Lord, we pray that you'd be pleased to visit us in our communities in

  115. a special way, to watch over our young people, to draw them to yourself. We ask, O Lord, that you would

  116. bless us now as we continue in our worship, remember us in all our needs, in our homes and families,

  117. those who are unwell, those who grieve and mourn, those who are heavy in heart or cast down in spirit

  118. at this time, those who feel discouraged or even dismayed. We pray, O Lord, for your spirit to be

  119. with them, for your love and your grace to surround them, and your peace to be upon them. And Lord,

  120. we ask you'll continue with us now in our time of worship as we open up your word, as we sing your

  121. praise. May we do all to your glory and help us to hear you speaking to us as we ask all confessing

  122. our sins anew, seeking your goodness and mercy to be upon us as we ask everything in Jesus' precious

  123. name and for his glory. Amen.

  124. We'll again sing to God's praise this time in Psalm 89 in the Scottish Psalter, page 344.

  125. Psalm 89 on page 344. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 5. The tune is New London.

  126. Psalm 89 at verse 1. God's mercies I will ever sing, and with my mouth I shall. Thy faithfulness

  127. make to be known to generations all. For mercy shall be built, said I, forever to endure. Thy

  128. faithfulness even in the heavens thou wilt establish sure. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5 to God's praise.

  129. God's mercies I will ever sing, and with my mouth I shall. Thy faithfulness came to the Lord, to be warm, to be

  130. my God's merciful. The Lord's mercies I will ever sing, and with my mouth I shall. Thy faithfulness came to be born, to be

  131. to generations on.

  132. For mercy shall be blessed

  133. and I forever to endure.

  134. Thy faithfulness yield in the hands

  135. thou wilt be sadly sure.

  136. I with my chosen one have made

  137. a covenant gracious thee.

  138. And to my servant

  139. whom I love

  140. to thee is for my.

  141. But I thy seed is salvation

  142. forever to remain.

  143. And will to generations of life

  144. both build and maintain.

  145. The gracious hope I want

  146. for the heavens shall express.

  147. And in the congregation

  148. all sakes my faithfulness.

  149. Can we turn together to read God's word

  150. now in the book of Genesis?

  151. The first book of the Bible, Genesis.

  152. And we'll take up our reading in chapter 11

  153. and at verse 27.

  154. Genesis chapter 11, taking up our reading

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  155. at verse 27, we read down into chapter 12

  156. and verse 9.

  157. Now these are the generations of Terah.

  158. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran.

  159. And Haran fathered Lot.

  160. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah

  161. in the land of his kindred

  162. in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  163. And Abram and Nahor took wives.

  164. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai.

  165. And the name of Nahor's wife Milcah,

  166. the daughter of Haran,

  167. the father of Milcah and Iscah.

  168. Now Sarai was barren.

  169. She had no child.

  170. Terah took Abram his son

  171. and Lot the son of Haran,

  172. his grandson,

  173. and Sarai his daughter-in-law,

  174. his son Abram's wife.

  175. And they went forth together

  176. from Ur of the Chaldeans

  177. to go into the land of Canaan.

  178. But when they came to Haran,

  179. they settled there.

  180. The days of Terah were 205 years,

  181. and Terah died in Haran.

  182. Now the Lord said to Abram,

  183. Go from your country

  184. and your kindred

  185. and your father's house

  186. to the land that I will show you.

  187. And I will make you a great nation.

  188. And I will bless you

  189. and make your name great

  190. so that you will be a blessing.

  191. I will bless those who bless you.

  192. And him who dishonors you

  193. I will curse.

  194. And in you all the families

  195. of the earth

  196. shall be blessed.

  197. So Abram went

  198. as the Lord had told him.

  199. And Lot went with him.

  200. Abram was 75 years old

  201. when he departed from Haran.

  202. And Abram took Sarai,

  203. his wife,

  204. and Lot,

  205. his brother's son,

  206. and all their possessions

  207. that they had gathered,

  208. and the people

  209. that they had acquired in Haran.

  210. And they set out

  211. to go to the land of Canaan.

  212. When they came

  213. to the land of Canaan,

  214. Abram passed through the land

  215. to the place at Shechem,

  216. to the oak of Moreh.

  217. At that time,

  218. the Canaanites were in the land.

  219. Then the Lord appeared

  220. to Abram and said,

  221. To your offspring

  222. I will give this land.

  223. So he built there

  224. an altar to the Lord

  225. who had appeared to him.

  226. From there he moved

  227. to the hill country

  228. on the east of Bethel

  229. and pitched his tent

  230. with Bethel on the west

  231. and I on the east.

  232. And there he built

  233. an altar to the Lord

  234. and called upon

  235. the name of the Lord.

  236. And Abram journeyed on,

  237. still going towards the Negev.

  238. And so on.

  239. May God bless that reading

  240. from his word.

  241. Before we turn back

  242. to this passage,

  243. we're going to sing again

  244. to God's praise.

  245. This time Psalm 105

  246. in the Scottish Psalter version.

  247. Psalm 105, page 375.

  248. We'll sing from verse 6

  249. to verse 10.

  250. And the tune is Glasgow.

  251. O ye that are of Abraham's race,

  252. his servant well approved,

  253. and ye that Jacob's children are,

  254. whom he chose for his own,

  255. because he and he only is

  256. the mighty Lord our God,

  257. and his most righteous judgments

  258. are in all the earth abroad.

  259. We'll sing from verse 6

  260. down to verse 10

  261. to God's praise.

  262. Amen.

  263. O ye that are of Abraham's race,

  264. his servant well approved,

  265. and he that Jacob's children are,

  266. and he chose for his own.

  267. Because he and he only is,

  268. the mighty Lord our God,

  269. and his bosque's wife with his own.

  270. And his bosque's life with her dr hár,

  271. and his use of water.

  272. And his bosque'sesis are,

  273. God bless you.

  274. The word he did, O my.

  275. Which covenant he firmly laid

  276. With faithful Abraham.

  277. And unto Isaac by his soul

  278. He did renew the same.

  279. And unto Jacob for a law

  280. He made it firm and true

  281. A covenant to Israel

  282. Which ever should endure

  283. We can turn back to our reading in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  284. And the beginning of that chapter, we'll look at verse 1 to 4 together this evening.

  285. Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  286. And here we have God's call to Abraham.

  287. We can just read at the beginning there.

  288. Now the Lord said to Abraham,

  289. Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

  290. And I will make you a great nation.

  291. And I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

  292. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse.

  293. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  294. So Abraham went, as the Lord had told him.

  295. There's a question we're often asked when we meet somebody, especially for the first time.

  296. And that question is, where are you from?

  297. It's one of the most natural questions to ask.

  298. But the response you give will depend where you are when you're being asked,

  299. or maybe who you are speaking to.

  300. If you just meet someone locally around the town,

  301. the question might be focused just on Stornoway itself or another village in the island.

  302. It might be, you know, what street are you from?

  303. Where's your house?

  304. What house do you belong to?

  305. Maybe you're speaking to someone who's just from another part of the island.

  306. It'd be, what village are you from?

  307. Or if you're in Scotland, maybe you're away from the island.

  308. They'd be asking, where are you from?

  309. They might just say the Isle of Lewis or the Western Isles.

  310. Or if you're abroad and someone hears your accent

  311. and ask, where are you from?

  312. You might just respond, Scotland.

  313. There's all kinds of answers that we can give to the question,

  314. depending on our circumstances.

  315. That question, where are you from?

  316. Tonight we're looking at this passage where God calls Abram.

  317. And as we're looking at this passage,

  318. we're considering Abram and God's call to him.

  319. And just thinking of Abram, we could ask that question of him.

  320. Who is he?

  321. And where is he from?

  322. You often hear Abraham mentioned.

  323. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  324. These names keep appearing throughout the scriptures.

  325. Abram is seen as the father of the faith.

  326. As we sang in Psalm 105 there in verse 6,

  327. it speaks of Abram.

  328. O ye that are of Abram's race,

  329. his servant well approved.

  330. He's faithful Abram.

  331. He's described as there in that psalm as well.

  332. He's such an important figure in the scriptures.

  333. The covenant that was made with him,

  334. that God made with him,

  335. the promise that God gave to him,

  336. as you see in Genesis 12 through to Genesis 17.

  337. Abram is a father figure,

  338. an important figure in the scriptures,

  339. referred to again and again in the Old

  340. and into the New Testament.

  341. But who is he?

  342. And where is he from?

  343. He would be one who would be blessed by God

  344. and through whom blessings would come.

  345. But if you were to meet Abram in his time

  346. and ask him,

  347. where are you from?

  348. I wonder what kind of answer he would have given.

  349. Because as you read of him,

  350. you often find that he is someone

  351. who is constantly on the move.

  352. He's a wanderer in so many ways.

  353. And the question to Abram is not so much,

  354. where are you from?

  355. But ultimately,

  356. where are you going?

  357. And that is perhaps the way Abram would answer.

  358. That where he is going.

  359. We think of our own culture

  360. and how many songs have been written

  361. about our homeland,

  362. our town,

  363. our villages,

  364. our islands.

  365. Through generations of people

  366. having to leave our island,

  367. whether it's for work

  368. or moving to another country,

  369. so many songs were written

  370. looking back to the place

  371. they would call home.

  372. The Durukin on Friday night

  373. is always full of requests

  374. from people who have moved away

  375. or who are living away now,

  376. requesting songs about where they have come from,

  377. remembering home.

  378. A longing for home

  379. is something that is instilled

  380. in so many people.

  381. But what about where we are going?

  382. For ourselves and for Abraham,

  383. that's a question that we have to ask ourselves as well.

  384. Not just where are we from,

  385. but ultimately,

  386. where are we going?

  387. And as we read of Abraham here,

  388. we see that through faith,

  389. he went forward.

  390. He left, as it were,

  391. his home place behind

  392. because God called him

  393. to go to another place.

  394. And it's amazing how it is described

  395. as you go through the Scriptures

  396. that it becomes not just a place

  397. looking to this world,

  398. but a place beyond.

  399. For he longed for a place

  400. that one day he would see

  401. in all its fullness

  402. and all its glory.

  403. A place that many others

  404. since then have longed for

  405. and to this day long for as well.

  406. And you read of this,

  407. especially in the book of Hebrews.

  408. And in that amazing chapter,

  409. chapter 11 of Hebrews,

  410. where it speaks about the people of faith.

  411. And just hear what it says about Abraham.

  412. In chapter 11 of Hebrews,

  413. verse 8,

  414. By faith, Abraham obeyed

  415. when he was called to go out

  416. to a place that he was to receive

  417. as an inheritance.

  418. And he went out,

  419. not knowing where he was going.

  420. By faith, he went to live

  421. in the land of promise,

  422. as in a foreign land,

  423. living in tents

  424. with Isaac and Jacob,

  425. heirs with him

  426. of the same promise.

  427. But then it says this,

  428. For he was looking forward

  429. to the city

  430. that has foundations,

  431. whose designer

  432. and builder

  433. is God.

  434. That was not just a city

  435. here,

  436. but an eternal city.

  437. A city whose designer,

  438. whose maker

  439. and builder

  440. is God.

  441. So it wasn't just about

  442. where he was from.

  443. You see there,

  444. he was a wanderer.

  445. He lived in tents.

  446. But he was looking forward.

  447. He was looking forward

  448. to a city

  449. whose maker

  450. and builder

  451. is God.

  452. And what about

  453. for ourselves?

  454. When we consider

  455. where we're from,

  456. when we think to ourselves,

  457. well,

  458. where are we going?

  459. And what does that mean

  460. to us

  461. this evening?

  462. Where are we going?

  463. Where are our lives

  464. taking us?

  465. Not just in the sense

  466. of here in this world,

  467. but eternally.

  468. And how do we find

  469. our way?

  470. Well,

  471. how would Abraham

  472. find this city?

  473. How would Abraham

  474. find this home

  475. for himself

  476. and for all of God's people?

  477. Well,

  478. we see it here.

  479. How he would come

  480. to enjoy it.

  481. How he would come

  482. to find it.

  483. It's through God's

  484. gracious call.

  485. God calling him

  486. and the promise

  487. of his covenant

  488. of grace

  489. to him

  490. that we see

  491. beginning here

  492. in chapter 12

  493. of Genesis

  494. and it really goes through

  495. to chapter 17

  496. of Genesis

  497. as well.

  498. But ultimately

  499. we see it

  500. running through

  501. scripture.

  502. The seed is here

  503. but it bears

  504. its fullness

  505. in Jesus Christ.

  506. And it is through

  507. faith

  508. in him

  509. and listening

  510. to his call

  511. to us

  512. that we experience

  513. and know

  514. the blessings

  515. promised

  516. to Abraham

  517. here.

  518. And as we read,

  519. he would make it

  520. a blessing

  521. to all the nations,

  522. to all the families

  523. of the earth

  524. shall be blessed

  525. through him.

  526. It's an amazing promise.

  527. It's an amazing call.

  528. It's an amazing experience

  529. that God would call

  530. his people

  531. to himself.

  532. And we just want

  533. to look at this call

  534. to Abraham

  535. and see

  536. how the blessing

  537. flows to ourselves.

  538. We want to see it

  539. in four ways.

  540. First of all,

  541. just to see

  542. Abraham's background

  543. and then the call

  544. to Abraham

  545. and then the blessing

  546. to Abraham

  547. and then the blessing

  548. through Abraham.

  549. I want to go through

  550. these four things.

  551. And first of all,

  552. the background

  553. of Abraham.

  554. We read at the end

  555. there of chapter 11

  556. which kind of

  557. sets the scene

  558. for us

  559. when we read

  560. the generations

  561. of who his father was

  562. and brothers

  563. and family.

  564. And we read

  565. a number of names

  566. there.

  567. And there we find

  568. the background

  569. of Abraham,

  570. where he lived

  571. and how he moved.

  572. But more importantly

  573. maybe,

  574. the kind of people

  575. that they were.

  576. And the immediate

  577. context of chapter 11

  578. is the Tower

  579. of Babel.

  580. If you read

  581. in verse 4

  582. of chapter 11,

  583. there it says,

  584. Then they said,

  585. Come,

  586. let us build

  587. ourselves

  588. a city

  589. and a tower

  590. with its top

  591. in the heavens

  592. and let us

  593. make a name

  594. for ourselves.

  595. This is where

  596. the people were at

  597. and this is not long

  598. after the flood.

  599. You see,

  600. the people's heart

  601. were still inclined

  602. to make a name

  603. for themselves

  604. and not praise

  605. the name

  606. of God.

  607. But in the midst

  608. of this,

  609. God came.

  610. Came into the midst

  611. and scattered them.

  612. Scattered them

  613. to all ends

  614. of the earth.

  615. It was not about

  616. making their name

  617. great.

  618. But that God's name

  619. would be made great.

  620. And so this was

  621. a time when

  622. the people

  623. had been scattered

  624. to all ends

  625. of the earth.

  626. And Abraham

  627. finds himself

  628. along with his family

  629. in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  630. Now you maybe

  631. think of Abraham.

  632. You hear this name,

  633. Mighty Abraham,

  634. Faithful Abraham,

  635. Abraham,

  636. the servant of God,

  637. a godly man,

  638. you say to yourself.

  639. And he was.

  640. But where was he from?

  641. Well, you think

  642. he must have had

  643. a godly family.

  644. He must have come

  645. from a godly line.

  646. And yet what you find

  647. as you look into it,

  648. as you see

  649. his father

  650. who was Terah,

  651. what you find is

  652. that Terah lived

  653. among a people

  654. who had no word

  655. of God.

  656. in chapter 24

  657. of Joshua,

  658. just a wee bit

  659. further on

  660. in the scriptures,

  661. it says that

  662. Terah,

  663. the father of Abraham

  664. and Nahor,

  665. just as we have here,

  666. it says that they lived

  667. in this place

  668. out of the Chaldeans.

  669. But what does it say?

  670. It says,

  671. they served

  672. other gods.

  673. They didn't live

  674. in a place

  675. where God

  676. was worshipped.

  677. They lived in a place

  678. that worshipped

  679. other gods.

  680. And Ur of the Chaldeans

  681. was a place

  682. known for this.

  683. It was known

  684. for moon worshipping.

  685. It was known

  686. for idols

  687. and a place

  688. of many gods.

  689. And yet that is

  690. where Abraham

  691. was from.

  692. That is his background.

  693. And he was in the midst

  694. of all of that.

  695. But doesn't that

  696. remind us

  697. of how remarkable

  698. God's grace is?

  699. Of how remarkable

  700. God is

  701. in the abundance

  702. of grace

  703. he shows to people.

  704. That no one

  705. is too far

  706. from God

  707. to be saved.

  708. Here is Abraham

  709. caught up

  710. in all of this.

  711. Gods of all kinds

  712. all around.

  713. And yet God

  714. calls him.

  715. It's an amazing

  716. thing to think

  717. that when we think

  718. of our own

  719. place today,

  720. our own nation today,

  721. how God

  722. can be calling

  723. people,

  724. not just who sit

  725. under his word,

  726. but even people

  727. who are out there

  728. with no thought

  729. of God

  730. at this time.

  731. When you think

  732. of even ministers

  733. and preachers,

  734. of the gospel,

  735. future ministers

  736. may be tonight

  737. sitting in a pub

  738. watching the football.

  739. They may have

  740. no thought

  741. for God

  742. and in our eyes

  743. they are far

  744. from God

  745. and yet God

  746. may be calling

  747. them.

  748. That is the wonder

  749. of God's grace.

  750. That is the abundance

  751. of God's grace.

  752. Here we see it

  753. with Abraham.

  754. We think Abraham

  755. must have been

  756. from a godly

  757. background,

  758. a godly family,

  759. and yet they

  760. were so far

  761. from God

  762. and yet God

  763. calls them.

  764. And that is the

  765. beauty of the

  766. scriptures.

  767. It's not about

  768. our ability

  769. to make things

  770. great,

  771. but it's about

  772. God's ability

  773. to make a people

  774. great,

  775. to make a people

  776. believe.

  777. That is the grace

  778. that is seen

  779. through Abraham.

  780. His background

  781. is maybe not

  782. what we expect.

  783. And when we look

  784. at our own

  785. background,

  786. did we expect

  787. God to call us?

  788. So often

  789. not.

  790. But yet God

  791. is a God

  792. of promise.

  793. He is a God

  794. who remembers

  795. his people,

  796. who calls

  797. his people,

  798. and who promises

  799. to be with

  800. them.

  801. And so this

  802. Abraham,

  803. who lived

  804. in our

  805. of the

  806. Chaldeans,

  807. he became

  808. the father

  809. of the faith.

  810. One who

  811. God's covenant

  812. came through,

  813. God's promise

  814. came through.

  815. It's a

  816. remarkable thing

  817. and a

  818. remarkable

  819. reminder

  820. of the

  821. God

  822. of all

  823. grace.

  824. It doesn't

  825. matter

  826. our

  827. background.

  828. when God

  829. calls,

  830. we are

  831. to listen.

  832. And that's

  833. the second

  834. thing we want

  835. to see here

  836. as well,

  837. is the

  838. call

  839. to Abraham.

  840. So here

  841. he was,

  842. the background

  843. is basically

  844. in the midst

  845. of idolatry

  846. and worshipping

  847. false gods.

  848. But into

  849. this comes

  850. the call

  851. of Abraham.

  852. And to be

  853. part of

  854. his covenant

  855. of grace,

  856. there was

  857. to be

  858. obedience

  859. from

  860. Abraham.

  861. God's

  862. covenant

  863. as it

  864. was made,

  865. God keeps

  866. his side

  867. at all

  868. times.

  869. It's not

  870. like a

  871. contract

  872. that we

  873. might make

  874. where if

  875. one side

  876. of the

  877. party

  878. fails in

  879. payments

  880. or repayments,

  881. the contract

  882. is broken.

  883. God's

  884. covenant

  885. is different.

  886. God

  887. will always

  888. keep

  889. his side.

  890. but it

  891. does

  892. call

  893. for

  894. obedience

  895. on

  896. Abraham's

  897. side

  898. here

  899. and

  900. our

  901. side

  902. tonight

  903. as well.

  904. God

  905. calls

  906. Abraham

  907. and you

  908. might

  909. expect

  910. that call

  911. would maybe

  912. come once

  913. Abraham

  914. has sorted

  915. his life

  916. out,

  917. once he

  918. has maybe

  919. moved away

  920. from out

  921. of the

  922. Chaldeans

  923. and moved

  924. into a

  925. better place,

  926. moved away

  927. from idols

  928. and false

  929. gods

  930. and false

  931. worship.

  932. But no,

  933. it comes

  934. right into

  935. the midst

  936. of where

  937. he is.

  938. In verse

  939. 1 of

  940. chapter 12,

  941. Now the

  942. Lord said

  943. to Abraham,

  944. Go from

  945. your country

  946. and your

  947. kindred

  948. and your

  949. father's

  950. house

  951. to the

  952. land

  953. that I

  954. will show

  955. you.

  956. His

  957. God

  958. comes

  959. in the

  960. midst

  961. of all

  962. that was

  963. happening

  964. in his

  965. life.

  966. And that's

  967. so often

  968. the case.

  969. We think

  970. to ourselves

  971. we have

  972. to sort

  973. ourselves

  974. out before

  975. God will

  976. speak to

  977. me.

  978. We have

  979. to sort

  980. our lives

  981. out before

  982. God can

  983. use me

  984. or call

  985. me to

  986. something

  987. else.

  988. But God

  989. says here

  990. to Abraham

  991. in the

  992. midst of

  993. everything,

  994. Go from

  995. your country

  996. and your

  997. kindred and

  998. your father's

  999. house to

  1000. the land

  1001. that I

  1002. will show

  1003. you.

  1004. And later

  1005. on in

  1006. scripture in

  1007. the book

  1008. of Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1009. chapter 7,

  1010. we see a

  1011. little more

  1012. of this.

  1013. It says

  1014. in verse

  1015. 2 of

  1016. Acts 7,

  1017. The God

  1018. of glory

  1019. appeared

  1020. to our

  1021. father

  1022. Abraham

  1023. when he

  1024. was in

  1025. Mesopotamia

  1026. before he

  1027. lived in

  1028. Haran and

  1029. said to

  1030. him,

  1031. Go out

  1032. of your

  1033. land and

  1034. from your

  1035. kindred and

  1036. go into

  1037. the land

  1038. that I

  1039. will show

  1040. you.

  1041. Then he

  1042. went out

  1043. from the

  1044. land of

  1045. the

  1046. Chaldeans

  1047. and lived

  1048. in Haran.

  1049. The God

  1050. of glory

  1051. appeared.

  1052. He appeared

  1053. to him

  1054. here in

  1055. the hour

  1056. of the

  1057. Chaldeans,

  1058. this place

  1059. of idolatry.

  1060. He appeared

  1061. to him

  1062. there.

  1063. And there's

  1064. a wonderful

  1065. reminder to

  1066. ourselves,

  1067. even here

  1068. this evening

  1069. or wherever

  1070. we might

  1071. hear this

  1072. message,

  1073. that God

  1074. speaks to

  1075. us in

  1076. our very

  1077. circumstances

  1078. here and

  1079. now.

  1080. Whatever our

  1081. lives are

  1082. like,

  1083. whatever is

  1084. going on

  1085. around us,

  1086. whatever is

  1087. going on in

  1088. our hearts,

  1089. God is

  1090. calling.

  1091. God is

  1092. calling us

  1093. to come

  1094. and follow

  1095. him.

  1096. He doesn't

  1097. wait for us

  1098. to sort

  1099. our lives

  1100. out.

  1101. He doesn't

  1102. wait for us

  1103. to make

  1104. ourselves

  1105. better,

  1106. because his

  1107. grace is

  1108. realizing we

  1109. are dead in

  1110. our trespasses

  1111. and sins,

  1112. like we were

  1113. thinking of

  1114. this morning

  1115. in Habakkuk.

  1116. Our sins,

  1117. they are

  1118. many,

  1119. but his

  1120. mercy is

  1121. more.

  1122. And he

  1123. has come

  1124. to give us

  1125. life.

  1126. And so here

  1127. we see

  1128. Abraham is

  1129. called to

  1130. leave his

  1131. home,

  1132. his people,

  1133. his father's

  1134. house,

  1135. and there's

  1136. a great

  1137. challenge in

  1138. this,

  1139. a challenge

  1140. to Abraham

  1141. here.

  1142. He is to

  1143. leave everything

  1144. behind and

  1145. trust God,

  1146. to listen to

  1147. God and

  1148. think,

  1149. well,

  1150. can this

  1151. God provide?

  1152. Can this

  1153. God keep

  1154. me?

  1155. Can this

  1156. God really

  1157. fulfill all

  1158. these promises

  1159. that he's

  1160. telling me

  1161. about through

  1162. me and

  1163. my wife

  1164. Sarah?

  1165. Sarah,

  1166. who it

  1167. says is

  1168. barren,

  1169. and yet

  1170. God is

  1171. saying,

  1172. I will

  1173. bless you

  1174. and make

  1175. you a

  1176. great nation.

  1177. His

  1178. trust is

  1179. put to

  1180. the test

  1181. straight

  1182. away.

  1183. And that's

  1184. a challenge

  1185. to ourselves

  1186. as well.

  1187. Do we

  1188. trust God?

  1189. Do you

  1190. trust God

  1191. this evening

  1192. with your

  1193. whole heart,

  1194. with your

  1195. whole life,

  1196. to say,

  1197. Lord,

  1198. I cannot

  1199. do this

  1200. by myself.

  1201. If I

  1202. cannot go

  1203. forward in

  1204. this way,

  1205. I have

  1206. my doubts,

  1207. I have

  1208. my fears,

  1209. I have

  1210. my questions.

  1211. But when

  1212. God calls,

  1213. it's decision

  1214. time.

  1215. It's

  1216. something we

  1217. face in

  1218. this world

  1219. again and

  1220. again when

  1221. God calls

  1222. us.

  1223. And we

  1224. so often

  1225. weigh things

  1226. up and

  1227. we think

  1228. of,

  1229. well,

  1230. what will I

  1231. lose out

  1232. and what

  1233. will I

  1234. miss,

  1235. what will I

  1236. gain?

  1237. We weigh

  1238. things in

  1239. the balance.

  1240. And tonight,

  1241. if you're not

  1242. heeding this

  1243. call,

  1244. what is

  1245. keeping you

  1246. back?

  1247. What is

  1248. keeping you

  1249. back from

  1250. being a

  1251. part of

  1252. the same

  1253. promise to

  1254. Abraham,

  1255. the promise

  1256. that he

  1257. says,

  1258. and you

  1259. all families

  1260. of the

  1261. earth will

  1262. be blessed,

  1263. the same

  1264. promise that

  1265. was given

  1266. to him,

  1267. that by

  1268. faith he

  1269. would see

  1270. these promises

  1271. fulfilled.

  1272. What is

  1273. keeping you

  1274. back tonight?

  1275. Do you

  1276. not trust

  1277. God to

  1278. be able to

  1279. fulfill all

  1280. these promises?

  1281. In the

  1282. New Testament

  1283. Jesus met

  1284. with a man

  1285. who was

  1286. called the

  1287. rich young

  1288. ruler and

  1289. Jesus challenged

  1290. him, you

  1291. know, go

  1292. and sell all

  1293. that you have

  1294. and then come

  1295. and follow

  1296. me.

  1297. And he

  1298. weighed it

  1299. up and he

  1300. says I've

  1301. got too

  1302. much to

  1303. lose.

  1304. He was

  1305. just looking

  1306. at it in

  1307. the temporal

  1308. things of

  1309. this world

  1310. and not

  1311. the eternal

  1312. things of

  1313. this world.

  1314. And he

  1315. decided no,

  1316. my wealth

  1317. is too

  1318. great,

  1319. the cost

  1320. is too

  1321. dear to

  1322. leave all

  1323. that behind

  1324. and follow

  1325. Jesus.

  1326. And it's

  1327. something we

  1328. have maybe

  1329. done or

  1330. maybe something

  1331. we are doing

  1332. right now,

  1333. we are saying

  1334. no, I

  1335. have too

  1336. much to

  1337. lose in

  1338. this world.

  1339. Well, you

  1340. have more

  1341. to lose

  1342. in

  1343. eternity.

  1344. What

  1345. shall it

  1346. profit a

  1347. man to

  1348. gain the

  1349. whole world

  1350. and yet

  1351. lose his

  1352. soul?

  1353. Abraham is

  1354. challenged

  1355. here.

  1356. The Lord

  1357. said to

  1358. Abraham,

  1359. go from

  1360. your country,

  1361. trust me

  1362. and go

  1363. forward with

  1364. me.

  1365. The burden

  1366. on Abraham

  1367. was,

  1368. will you

  1369. go?

  1370. And what

  1371. was his

  1372. response?

  1373. Well, you

  1374. see it in

  1375. verse 4,

  1376. so Abraham

  1377. went as

  1378. the Lord

  1379. had told

  1380. him.

  1381. Abraham

  1382. went.

  1383. How do

  1384. we respond

  1385. to God's

  1386. call?

  1387. Will you

  1388. go?

  1389. Abraham

  1390. went.

  1391. When you

  1392. think of the

  1393. disciples and

  1394. Jesus called

  1395. them and

  1396. said, lay

  1397. down your

  1398. nets, leave

  1399. them behind

  1400. and come

  1401. and follow

  1402. me and I

  1403. will make

  1404. you fishers

  1405. of men.

  1406. They dropped

  1407. them there

  1408. and then.

  1409. They left

  1410. them behind

  1411. and they

  1412. followed

  1413. Jesus.

  1414. Has

  1415. anybody ever

  1416. lost out

  1417. in doing

  1418. that?

  1419. No.

  1420. And if you

  1421. have any

  1422. doubts this

  1423. evening as

  1424. to the cost

  1425. of losing

  1426. out on

  1427. anything and

  1428. following

  1429. Jesus,

  1430. you will

  1431. only lose

  1432. out if you

  1433. don't.

  1434. the call

  1435. is to

  1436. come and

  1437. follow.

  1438. The question

  1439. is, will

  1440. you go?

  1441. Will you

  1442. go with

  1443. him?

  1444. Well, Abraham

  1445. went.

  1446. And what we

  1447. see then is

  1448. the blessing

  1449. to Abraham.

  1450. Blessing

  1451. follows

  1452. obedience.

  1453. We hear

  1454. that phrase.

  1455. But too,

  1456. often we think

  1457. of blessings

  1458. as everything

  1459. is going to

  1460. be well

  1461. in life.

  1462. But blessing

  1463. is knowing

  1464. that God

  1465. is with

  1466. you through

  1467. all things.

  1468. Honor me

  1469. and I

  1470. will honor

  1471. you, God

  1472. says.

  1473. And Abraham

  1474. went in

  1475. obedience.

  1476. And as he

  1477. went in

  1478. obedience, he

  1479. found every

  1480. promise of

  1481. God to be

  1482. true.

  1483. How God

  1484. would provide.

  1485. It wasn't

  1486. always easy.

  1487. There were

  1488. challenges along

  1489. the way.

  1490. But God

  1491. provided for

  1492. him.

  1493. In verse

  1494. two,

  1495. here it

  1496. says,

  1497. I will

  1498. make you

  1499. a great

  1500. nation.

  1501. And I

  1502. will bless

  1503. you and

  1504. make your

  1505. name great

  1506. so that

  1507. you will

  1508. be a

  1509. blessing.

  1510. This is

  1511. the very

  1512. thing that

  1513. they were

  1514. looking for

  1515. in Babel

  1516. in chapter

  1517. 11,

  1518. verse 4.

  1519. They said,

  1520. come, let

  1521. us build

  1522. ourselves a

  1523. city, a

  1524. tower with

  1525. its tops

  1526. in the

  1527. heaven, and

  1528. let us

  1529. make a

  1530. name for

  1531. ourselves.

  1532. themselves.

  1533. They wanted

  1534. to make a

  1535. name for

  1536. themselves.

  1537. But here

  1538. in verse

  1539. 2, we

  1540. see Abraham

  1541. here.

  1542. His name

  1543. is going

  1544. to be

  1545. made

  1546. great.

  1547. I will

  1548. bless you

  1549. and make

  1550. your name

  1551. great.

  1552. God will

  1553. do it.

  1554. This time,

  1555. both here in

  1556. the UK and

  1557. also in

  1558. America,

  1559. politics is

  1560. all to the

  1561. fore.

  1562. all these

  1563. slogans

  1564. come out

  1565. just now

  1566. of how

  1567. Britain is

  1568. going to

  1569. be great

  1570. once again,

  1571. or how

  1572. America is

  1573. going to

  1574. be great.

  1575. Put your

  1576. trust in

  1577. these people

  1578. and they

  1579. will make

  1580. the nation

  1581. great again.

  1582. That is the

  1583. promises that

  1584. are being

  1585. put out

  1586. there.

  1587. But all

  1588. it is,

  1589. it's like

  1590. the Tower

  1591. of Babel

  1592. back in

  1593. these days.

  1594. They want

  1595. their name

  1596. to be

  1597. great.

  1598. But the

  1599. answer to

  1600. greatness for

  1601. a nation

  1602. and for

  1603. a people,

  1604. it's not

  1605. about making

  1606. our name

  1607. great,

  1608. but making

  1609. God's

  1610. name

  1611. great.

  1612. Because only

  1613. God can

  1614. make a

  1615. nation

  1616. great and

  1617. a people

  1618. great.

  1619. And God

  1620. will humble

  1621. the proud

  1622. and he'll

  1623. exalt the

  1624. humble.

  1625. And so we

  1626. need to

  1627. humble

  1628. ourselves

  1629. before God.

  1630. And in

  1631. many ways

  1632. what Abraham

  1633. is doing

  1634. here is

  1635. humbling

  1636. himself

  1637. before God.

  1638. Being

  1639. obedient to

  1640. God.

  1641. Go from

  1642. your country,

  1643. your kindred,

  1644. your father's

  1645. house to

  1646. the land

  1647. that I

  1648. will show

  1649. you.

  1650. And I

  1651. will make

  1652. you a

  1653. great nation

  1654. and I

  1655. will bless

  1656. you and

  1657. make your

  1658. name great

  1659. so that

  1660. you will

  1661. be a

  1662. blessing.

  1663. And so

  1664. Abraham

  1665. went.

  1666. But when

  1667. you look at

  1668. Abraham as

  1669. he goes

  1670. on,

  1671. as he's a

  1672. blessing to

  1673. many,

  1674. you still

  1675. see him

  1676. traveling

  1677. around,

  1678. moving from

  1679. one place

  1680. to another,

  1681. living in

  1682. tents.

  1683. And yet

  1684. he knew

  1685. the blessing

  1686. of God

  1687. as he

  1688. worshipped

  1689. him.

  1690. He knew

  1691. the presence

  1692. of God

  1693. and God

  1694. blessed him

  1695. and a

  1696. people

  1697. through him.

  1698. He was

  1699. a man of

  1700. faith and

  1701. God

  1702. rewards that

  1703. faith as

  1704. we see in

  1705. Hebrews 11.

  1706. And what

  1707. was his

  1708. greatest

  1709. reward?

  1710. His

  1711. greatest

  1712. reward was

  1713. to be

  1714. looking forward

  1715. and to see

  1716. that city

  1717. that has

  1718. foundations,

  1719. whose

  1720. designer and

  1721. builder is

  1722. God.

  1723. That is

  1724. what faith

  1725. rewards,

  1726. to bring us

  1727. into the

  1728. presence of

  1729. God.

  1730. I was

  1731. going round

  1732. the castle

  1733. grounds this

  1734. week,

  1735. walking down

  1736. by the

  1737. Creed.

  1738. And as I

  1739. was walking

  1740. down,

  1741. there was a

  1742. group of

  1743. four tourists

  1744. who had

  1745. obviously come

  1746. off one of

  1747. the cruise

  1748. ships that

  1749. were in.

  1750. And they'd

  1751. come round

  1752. the new

  1753. pathway there

  1754. across the

  1755. bridge on

  1756. the Creed

  1757. and they

  1758. were

  1759. standing at

  1760. a sign

  1761. with a

  1762. map on

  1763. it.

  1764. And as

  1765. you come

  1766. over the

  1767. bridge,

  1768. there's three

  1769. ways to

  1770. go.

  1771. You can

  1772. go left,

  1773. you can

  1774. go right,

  1775. and you

  1776. can go

  1777. straight ahead.

  1778. And they're

  1779. looking at

  1780. this map and

  1781. they're seeing

  1782. me coming

  1783. towards them

  1784. and they

  1785. stop me and

  1786. they ask

  1787. me,

  1788. excuse me

  1789. sir,

  1790. could you

  1791. tell us

  1792. the way to

  1793. the city?

  1794. I say,

  1795. well I'm

  1796. not sure

  1797. where you

  1798. think you're

  1799. going,

  1800. but Stornow

  1801. is not

  1802. much of a

  1803. city compared

  1804. to some of

  1805. the cities

  1806. that you've

  1807. seen.

  1808. But I

  1809. said,

  1810. I can

  1811. point them

  1812. in different

  1813. directions here.

  1814. They're looking

  1815. at the map

  1816. and probably

  1817. thinking,

  1818. the shortest

  1819. way is

  1820. straight ahead,

  1821. but it's

  1822. just going

  1823. into the

  1824. woods.

  1825. And I'm

  1826. thinking,

  1827. if they go

  1828. in there and

  1829. they find

  1830. more ways

  1831. to go,

  1832. they're just

  1833. going to

  1834. end up

  1835. lost.

  1836. So I

  1837. said,

  1838. well your

  1839. best way

  1840. is to

  1841. follow the

  1842. river down

  1843. to the

  1844. mouth and

  1845. then follow

  1846. around the

  1847. path along

  1848. by the

  1849. sea.

  1850. At least

  1851. you'll have

  1852. something to

  1853. keep you

  1854. right.

  1855. But as I

  1856. left them

  1857. behind,

  1858. I thought to

  1859. myself,

  1860. what a

  1861. question that

  1862. is.

  1863. Can you

  1864. tell me the

  1865. way to

  1866. the city?

  1867. And that's

  1868. the question

  1869. that's behind

  1870. Abraham here

  1871. as well.

  1872. And the

  1873. question that's

  1874. behind our

  1875. own thinking

  1876. tonight,

  1877. what is the

  1878. way to

  1879. the city?

  1880. And what is

  1881. the city

  1882. that we are

  1883. looking for?

  1884. We think of

  1885. where we're

  1886. from,

  1887. but what

  1888. about where

  1889. we're going?

  1890. they may

  1891. have been

  1892. disappointed,

  1893. I hope not,

  1894. when they

  1895. came into

  1896. the town

  1897. of Stornoway.

  1898. But there's

  1899. one thing

  1900. for sure,

  1901. that if we

  1902. find this

  1903. city whose

  1904. maker and

  1905. builder is

  1906. God,

  1907. there will

  1908. be no

  1909. disappointment.

  1910. There will

  1911. be no

  1912. regret of

  1913. leaving anything

  1914. behind,

  1915. because we

  1916. will truly

  1917. see that

  1918. faith in

  1919. God and

  1920. in Christ

  1921. has a

  1922. great reward.

  1923. No matter

  1924. our journey

  1925. through this

  1926. life,

  1927. no matter

  1928. the ups

  1929. and downs

  1930. along the

  1931. way,

  1932. we are to

  1933. look to

  1934. a city

  1935. whose

  1936. maker and

  1937. builder

  1938. is God.

  1939. That is

  1940. the blessing

  1941. that Abraham

  1942. knew.

  1943. And just

  1944. as we

  1945. conclude,

  1946. just briefly,

  1947. I want to

  1948. think of the

  1949. blessing through

  1950. Abraham.

  1951. I will

  1952. bless those

  1953. who bless

  1954. you,

  1955. and in

  1956. you all

  1957. families of

  1958. the earth

  1959. shall be

  1960. blessed.

  1961. There is

  1962. an ongoing

  1963. promise

  1964. here,

  1965. that through

  1966. his covenant

  1967. with Abraham,

  1968. God would

  1969. bless all

  1970. families of

  1971. the earth,

  1972. all who

  1973. put their

  1974. trust in

  1975. him.

  1976. Go back

  1977. to the

  1978. question,

  1979. where are

  1980. you from,

  1981. and who

  1982. do you

  1983. belong to?

  1984. I

  1985. mentioned

  1986. how often

  1987. we hear

  1988. songs sung

  1989. in our

  1990. own culture.

  1991. And one

  1992. of the songs

  1993. that will

  1994. always catch

  1995. my attention

  1996. is the

  1997. song about

  1998. Shobost.

  1999. Shashiabost

  2000. is

  2001. Boehelam.

  2002. And there's

  2003. one line,

  2004. or some

  2005. lines in

  2006. that song

  2007. that speak

  2008. about a

  2009. generation of

  2010. people who

  2011. are no

  2012. longer living.

  2013. But yet you

  2014. still see

  2015. their mark

  2016. left behind.

  2017. The gardens

  2018. and the

  2019. fields,

  2020. they speak

  2021. of a

  2022. people no

  2023. more.

  2024. The marks

  2025. that are

  2026. there.

  2027. And we

  2028. think of

  2029. them as we

  2030. see it

  2031. around our

  2032. island in

  2033. so many

  2034. different

  2035. places.

  2036. You think

  2037. of the

  2038. lazy beds.

  2039. You see

  2040. them everywhere

  2041. throughout our

  2042. island and you

  2043. think, how on

  2044. earth did

  2045. something grow

  2046. there?

  2047. And yet they

  2048. are a mark

  2049. to us of

  2050. the life

  2051. that once

  2052. was.

  2053. Or the

  2054. peat banks

  2055. that so many

  2056. now are not

  2057. used.

  2058. They're a

  2059. reminder to

  2060. us of what

  2061. people relied

  2062. on in the

  2063. past.

  2064. But they're a

  2065. reminder to us

  2066. of the

  2067. potential that

  2068. is still

  2069. there.

  2070. Places that

  2071. are now

  2072. overgrown.

  2073. And yet

  2074. when we

  2075. think of

  2076. that in

  2077. light of

  2078. God's

  2079. covenant

  2080. with Abraham,

  2081. it can be

  2082. something we

  2083. think is

  2084. forgotten.

  2085. Something that

  2086. in many ways

  2087. that we have

  2088. left to the

  2089. side and

  2090. has become

  2091. overgrown.

  2092. And yet

  2093. the marks

  2094. are still

  2095. there for

  2096. us.

  2097. The wonder

  2098. of God's

  2099. grace is

  2100. still there

  2101. for us.

  2102. And at

  2103. the heart

  2104. of this

  2105. is the

  2106. fulfillment

  2107. of this

  2108. covenant

  2109. in Christ.

  2110. And where

  2111. we see

  2112. the marks

  2113. on Christ.

  2114. The marks,

  2115. the wounds

  2116. that bore

  2117. our sin

  2118. on the

  2119. cross.

  2120. And the

  2121. promise that

  2122. Abraham had

  2123. of a rich

  2124. land,

  2125. a blossoming

  2126. land,

  2127. that is the

  2128. promise that

  2129. is ours

  2130. in Christ.

  2131. Of a

  2132. greater

  2133. place,

  2134. a better

  2135. place,

  2136. a place

  2137. that Jesus

  2138. said in

  2139. John 14,

  2140. I go

  2141. to prepare

  2142. a place

  2143. for you.

  2144. And if I

  2145. go to

  2146. prepare a

  2147. place for

  2148. you,

  2149. I will

  2150. come again

  2151. and take

  2152. you to

  2153. myself,

  2154. that where

  2155. I am,

  2156. you may

  2157. be also.

  2158. a city,

  2159. a place

  2160. whose

  2161. maker and

  2162. builder

  2163. is God.

  2164. So the

  2165. question for

  2166. us tonight

  2167. is not

  2168. just where

  2169. are you

  2170. from,

  2171. the question

  2172. is where

  2173. are you

  2174. going?

  2175. And do

  2176. you long

  2177. for that

  2178. place?

  2179. Are the

  2180. things of

  2181. this world

  2182. taking hold

  2183. of your

  2184. heart so

  2185. that your

  2186. heart is

  2187. overgrown

  2188. with all

  2189. the pressures

  2190. of this

  2191. world?

  2192. Or are

  2193. you hearing

  2194. the call

  2195. of God

  2196. as it

  2197. was to

  2198. Abraham?

  2199. In the

  2200. midst of

  2201. idolatry

  2202. and everything

  2203. else that

  2204. was going

  2205. on around

  2206. him,

  2207. God called

  2208. him out

  2209. of that

  2210. place and

  2211. gave him

  2212. the promise

  2213. of a

  2214. blessing to

  2215. him and

  2216. being a

  2217. blessing to

  2218. others and

  2219. a faith

  2220. that had

  2221. its reward.

  2222. Abraham,

  2223. was a

  2224. man,

  2225. just a

  2226. person like

  2227. you and

  2228. I,

  2229. and yet

  2230. God called

  2231. him in

  2232. the same

  2233. way as

  2234. God calls

  2235. us,

  2236. each one

  2237. of us.

  2238. Abraham may

  2239. be seen

  2240. as the

  2241. father of

  2242. the faith,

  2243. but through

  2244. him and

  2245. ultimately

  2246. through his

  2247. seed,

  2248. through Christ

  2249. Jesus,

  2250. there is a

  2251. blessing to

  2252. all the

  2253. families of

  2254. the earth.

  2255. If we have

  2256. faith that

  2257. we too

  2258. will see

  2259. this city

  2260. whose

  2261. maker,

  2262. whose

  2263. designer

  2264. and builder

  2265. is God.

  2266. Tell me

  2267. the way

  2268. to the

  2269. city.

  2270. The way

  2271. to the

  2272. city is

  2273. by faith

  2274. in Christ.

  2275. So let's

  2276. hear his

  2277. call and

  2278. let's

  2279. follow him.

  2280. Let us

  2281. pray.

  2282. Our

  2283. father in

  2284. heaven,

  2285. we do

  2286. thank you

  2287. for your

  2288. word and

  2289. for the

  2290. promises we

  2291. find in

  2292. them.

  2293. We think

  2294. of the

  2295. fear that

  2296. these names

  2297. can so

  2298. often put

  2299. in us.

  2300. Abraham,

  2301. Isaac and

  2302. Jacob and

  2303. how unworthy

  2304. we are.

  2305. And yet

  2306. when we

  2307. see their

  2308. background,

  2309. when we

  2310. see where

  2311. they're

  2312. from and

  2313. ultimately

  2314. where they're

  2315. going,

  2316. we thank

  2317. you that

  2318. it reminds

  2319. us that

  2320. your call

  2321. is the

  2322. same to

  2323. us.

  2324. To heed

  2325. the call

  2326. of God

  2327. and to

  2328. follow you

  2329. that we

  2330. might by

  2331. faith see

  2332. that great

  2333. city whose

  2334. maker and

  2335. builder is

  2336. God.

  2337. So Lord,

  2338. guide us

  2339. along the

  2340. way,

  2341. keep us

  2342. and protect

  2343. us and

  2344. give us

  2345. ears to

  2346. hear and

  2347. to respond

  2348. to your

  2349. call as

  2350. we ask

  2351. it all in

  2352. Jesus'

  2353. name.

  2354. Amen.

  2355. We're

  2356. going to

  2357. conclude by

  2358. singing to

  2359. God's

  2360. praise in

  2361. Psalm 16

  2362. in the

  2363. same

  2364. psalms,

  2365. the same

  2366. psalm as

  2367. we had at

  2368. the start,

  2369. page 17

  2370. of the

  2371. psalm

  2372. books.

  2373. Psalm 16

  2374. at verse

  2375. 8,

  2376. we'll sing

  2377. down to

  2378. the end

  2379. of the

  2380. psalm,

  2381. the tune

  2382. is Golden

  2383. Hill.

  2384. It's a

  2385. psalm that

  2386. reminds us

  2387. of our

  2388. ultimate,

  2389. our blessing

  2390. in God

  2391. as we

  2392. set the

  2393. Lord always

  2394. before us.

  2395. Because he

  2396. is at my

  2397. right hand,

  2398. I'll not

  2399. be overthrown.

  2400. Therefore,

  2401. my heart

  2402. is glad,

  2403. my tongue

  2404. with joy

  2405. will sing,

  2406. my body

  2407. too will

  2408. rest secure

  2409. in hope

  2410. unwavering.

  2411. We'll sing

  2412. from verse

  2413. 8 to

  2414. 11 to

  2415. God's

  2416. praise.

  2417. Amen.

  2418. God's

  2419. love

  2420. and my

  2421. right hand,

  2422. I'll not

  2423. be overthrown.

  2424. Therefore,

  2425. my heart

  2426. is glad,

  2427. my tongue

  2428. with joy

  2429. will sing,

  2430. my body

  2431. too will

  2432. rest secure

  2433. in hope

  2434. unwavering.

  2435. For you

  2436. will not

  2437. die

  2438. my soul

  2439. in death

  2440. to stay

  2441. nor will

  2442. you leave

  2443. your holy

  2444. one

  2445. to see

  2446. the

  2447. wounds

  2448. decay.

  2449. you

  2450. are

  2451. lost

  2452. to me

2453. Which shall I go at your right hand?

2454. Joy come, your face will shine.

2455. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right.

  2456. We'll close the benediction.

2457. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore. Amen.
