  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 77, in the Sing Psalms version.

  2. Psalm 77, so on page 100 of the psalm books, we'll sing from verse 6 down to verse 14.

  3. Psalm 77 at verse 6,

  4. Throughout the watches of the night, my songs I called to mind.

  5. I ponder deeply while my heart an answer tried to find.

  6. Forever will the Lord reject and never show his grace.

  7. Has he withdrawn his steadfast love and turned from me his face?

  8. And then we see in verse 10 a response.

  9. Then to my heart there came this thought.

  10. On this I will rely.

  11. The years of the right hand of power of him who is most high.

  12. How God remembers us in all our needs.

  13. So we'll sing from verse 6 to verse 14 and the tune is Glencairn.

  14. I invoke the singing of Jadion, Schmidt divers out of England.

  15. interval six feet away from the r computational group.

  16. I wonder deeply while my heart

  17. an answer I to find.

  18. Forever will the Lord be dead

  19. and never show his face.

  20. As he withdrawn his strength as love

  21. and turned only his face.

  22. For all time has his promise

  23. in his God no longer kind.

  24. As he is, he traverses

  25. compassion from his mind.

  26. Then to my heart

  27. there came this thought

  28. of which I will rely.

  29. The years of the bright hand of hand

  30. of him who is most high.

  31. I will recall the Lord's great peace

  32. pure works of long and long.

  33. I'll meditate on all your act

  34. pure mighty deeds that show.

  35. O God, most holy higher ways

  36. what God compares with you.

  37. You are the Lord of the hills

  38. who is part of the nation's view.

  39. Let's come to God in prayer.

  40. Let us pray.

  41. O Lord, our gracious God,

  42. as we continue in our worship of you this day,

  43. we do thank you for your word

  44. as we have heard it today,

  45. as we come to hear it once more,

  46. that we would never tire of it,

  47. that we would never tire of uniting our hearts

  48. in praise and worship to you,

  49. that our hearts would not go cold

  50. or hard towards you.

  51. We often feel, Lord,

  52. that that would not be possible

  53. and yet your word reminds us

  54. that so often down through

  55. the generations of your people,

  56. your people have lost that focus,

  57. lost that attention to who they are to worship.

  58. And yet constantly you remind us

  59. that only you are worthy of all our prayers

  60. and all our worship,

  61. that glory is to you alone.

  62. Even in these words that we have sung,

  63. we are reminded of it,

  64. that there is no God who compares to you,

  65. for you are the God of miracles,

  66. whose power the nations view.

  67. And yet as we think of these words

  68. in our own times just now

  69. and with all the nations around us,

  70. we know that we still see your power

  71. and your miracles at work in our midst,

  72. and yet we have no thought of them.

  73. We have no thought towards you.

  74. And so we pray, Lord,

  75. that you will remember us,

  76. that you will awaken us,

  77. that you would give us the prayer of this psalm,

  78. that we would be a people

  79. who would constantly remember,

  80. that we can rely upon you,

  81. the years of the right hand of power,

  82. of him who is most high,

  83. the wonders of the Lord's great deeds,

  84. his works of long ago,

  85. that we can still look to these things,

  86. that we can still remind ourselves

  87. that you are still the God of miracles,

  88. that you are still the one,

  89. even today,

  90. who is able to do so much more

  91. than all that we ask or imagine.

  92. And so give us faith, O Lord.

  93. Give us to look to you

  94. and to trust and rely upon you for all things.

  95. For in you we live,

  96. move and have our being,

  97. as your word says.

  98. And Lord,

  99. there are times when we so often think

  100. we can rely on ourselves,

  101. but again and again,

  102. you remind us,

  103. Lord,

  104. that we are weak enough ourselves,

  105. that we are unable to do so much in our lives.

  106. And especially,

  107. Lord,

  108. the greatest thing we cannot achieve

  109. is our own salvation.

  110. We cannot do anything

  111. to receive glory from you,

  112. that you would say to us,

  113. well done,

  114. on being able to do

  115. what can bring forgiveness of sins

  116. to yourself.

  117. We have to look beyond ourselves.

  118. We have to acknowledge our sin

  119. and look to the one

  120. who was without sin

  121. and the one who came to bear

  122. the sins of this world.

  123. And we thank you that in Jesus Christ,

  124. we have that one to look to,

  125. that we can lift our eyes to him,

  126. that we can behold him,

  127. the one who was pierced

  128. for our transgressions,

  129. the one by whose wounds

  130. we can be healed.

  131. And we thank you that it is your word

  132. that directs us

  133. in all of these things

  134. to see the wonder

  135. and the beauty of Jesus.

  136. And we thank you for the promise

  137. of the Holy Spirit,

  138. the one who leads us

  139. towards the wonder of Christ

  140. and the wonder of the glory of his name.

  141. And we pray tonight

  142. that your spirit will be with us

  143. as we gather here

  144. and as others tune in online.

  145. We pray for your spirit

  146. to lead us in our worship,

  147. to guide us in your word,

  148. to teach us,

  149. to build us up,

  150. to challenge and rebuke

  151. where that is required,

  152. to do all things,

  153. O Lord, for us,

  154. that we might leave here

  155. with a clearer knowledge

  156. and a clearer understanding

  157. of who you are.

  158. And our trust would increase,

  159. that our faith would go on strengthened,

  160. even for this week ahead,

  161. in all the uncertainties of it

  162. and the challenges that may lie ahead for us.

  163. That, as your word reminds us,

  164. if we were to have faith,

  165. even the size of a mustard seed,

  166. we could say to the mountains

  167. to be cast into the sea.

  168. So, Lord, give us that faith

  169. to look to you at all times

  170. and to lean upon you

  171. for understanding and wisdom

  172. and help in all life's experience.

  173. We do pray for our people here.

  174. We thank you for every home

  175. and family represented.

  176. We thank you for our community,

  177. our church community,

  178. our church family.

  179. And we pray, Lord,

  180. that you will bind us together

  181. day by day,

  182. that as the message of your word

  183. is delivered here this morning

  184. by the Reverend Colin McLeod,

  185. that we are to be a living church for you,

  186. that you would make us so,

  187. that you would enable us, Lord,

  188. to go on in your strength,

  189. to do all things well

  190. and to do all for your glory.

  191. And we thank you for every service

  192. that we have to give to you.

  193. We thank you for the gift of prayer.

  194. We thank you that whether we are together

  195. or apart,

  196. we are to exercise that,

  197. that we are to look to you, O Lord,

  198. and wait patiently upon you.

  199. We are to offer up our prayers to you

  200. for all things.

  201. And especially as we seek, O Lord,

  202. wisdom from you

  203. in all the days ahead,

  204. as we seek your blessing

  205. on all the works we are involved in,

  206. as we seek your help in all things.

  207. Lord, we thank you

  208. that we have a name to come to you with,

  209. that we pray,

  210. not in of ourselves,

  211. but in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  212. And we thank you, Lord,

  213. that together we pray that name this evening.

  214. And may you teach us to pray, Lord.

  215. May you encourage us in prayer.

  216. May you give answer to your,

  217. to our prayers according to your will,

  218. as we ask it all,

  219. looking for your glory.

  220. And may you teach us, O Lord,

  221. as we go on to know that

  222. you are the one who builds your church.

  223. As we think of every endeavor,

  224. as we preach the word,

  225. as we share it,

  226. as we meet for prayers during the week,

  227. as we look to your help

  228. for the holiday club

  229. and for the Fridays of the Free,

  230. for all that we do

  231. to reach out to our communities

  232. with the gospel.

  233. We pray for patience.

  234. We pray for words to speak.

  235. We pray for your spirit to move among us,

  236. that we would see your power at work,

  237. that we would see the revelation

  238. of your acts once more in our midst,

  239. that we would give glory and praise to you.

  240. We thank you too, Lord,

  241. that as a people,

  242. we can mourn with those who mourn as well.

  243. And we thank you for that power

  244. that there is in your people

  245. to gather round one another in such times.

  246. And as we have been touched by the sad news,

  247. even in these last days,

  248. we do thank you, Lord,

  249. that as you call your people home,

  250. that we have that great comfort

  251. and great assurance

  252. that to die is gain for your people.

  253. And so we pray, Lord,

  254. your comfort in the midst of sorrow.

  255. And we think especially of

  256. the family of Charlie Finlayson at this time

  257. and ourselves as a congregation.

  258. We thank you for his humble service to you

  259. over so many years.

  260. And we pray, Lord,

  261. for Catherine and for Ruthie at this time

  262. and the grandsons too

  263. and all the family as a whole.

  264. Lord, may your peace and blessing be over them.

  265. May you draw near to them

  266. and comfort them throughout these days

  267. and give help, O Lord,

  268. in all that is to be done over these days.

  269. We thank you that your grace

  270. is always sufficient.

  271. And we pray for that to be poured out upon them

  272. and that they would know it in a special way.

  273. Lord, we do pray for those

  274. who are unwell at this time.

  275. We know there's been so much illness

  276. over these last few weeks,

  277. not just with ourselves,

  278. but throughout our island communities.

  279. There are so many who are unwell

  280. and suffering in different ways.

  281. We just pray for healing and help

  282. in the midst of it.

  283. We thank you, Lord,

  284. for all the health service

  285. and for all that they do for us

  286. in hospitals and in the community

  287. and serving in so many different ways.

  288. We pray for them, Lord,

  289. that you will strengthen them

  290. and bless them.

  291. We do pray for our land at this time as well.

  292. In the midst of this last week

  293. and the general election that's taken place,

  294. a general election that has seen so much change

  295. throughout our land,

  296. not least in the leadership of our parliament.

  297. We do pray for our new prime minister.

  298. We ask, O Lord,

  299. that you would lead them

  300. and guide them and his government

  301. and all who will serve in parliament

  302. in these coming years,

  303. either re-elected or elected anew.

  304. We do pray for them, Lord,

  305. that you will guide them by your spirit

  306. and help them to know

  307. that your power is there for them,

  308. that they would call upon you

  309. and ask for your wisdom

  310. and your guidance.

  311. We do pray for our nation.

  312. We pray for the gospel

  313. as it goes out throughout our land.

  314. We pray for you to build your church in our midst,

  315. that you would have mercy upon us,

  316. that you would pour out your spirit upon us.

  317. We pray that for the lands of the world, O Lord,

  318. in which we live,

  319. the nations, the peoples,

  320. all that we see around us.

  321. We pray, Lord,

  322. that you would pour out your blessing upon us,

  323. guide us towards you,

  324. that your word will be blessed

  325. to all ends of the earth.

  326. We thank you for our time here,

  327. this evening,

  328. and we pray that you will continue with us,

  329. watch over our people,

  330. watch over those who are visiting with us

  331. over these coming weeks

  332. and people who are traveling away as well.

  333. We pray your protection,

  334. your safety,

  335. your blessing,

  336. your refreshing upon us all.

  337. And we ask, O Lord,

  338. that above all,

  339. together we would praise you,

  340. together we would fix our eyes on Jesus

  341. and look to him,

  342. we might know his power and presence

  343. in our midst,

  344. and even going into this week ahead,

  345. that we would know your strength

  346. and your mercy with us.

  347. We thank you for your grace

  348. and pray to know it more and more.

  349. So hear our prayers

  350. and pardon our sin

  351. as we ask all of these things

  352. in that precious name

  353. that we look to even anew this evening,

  354. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

  355. and his glory in our midst.

  356. Amen.

  357. We'll again sing to God's praise

  358. this time in Psalm 30

  359. in the Singed Psalms version.

  360. Psalm 30 on page 34.

  361. We'll sing from the beginning of the psalm

  362. down to verse 8.

  363. And then our next singing

  364. will be from the same psalm as well.

  365. Psalm 30 on page 34 at verse 1.

  366. O Lord, I will exalt your name

  367. for you have rescued me.

  368. You did not let my foes rejoice

  369. and gloat triumphantly.

  370. Lord God, in need I cried to you

  371. and you restored my health.

  372. O Lord, you brought me from the grave

  373. and saved my soul from death.

  374. We'll sing from verse 1 to 8

  375. to God's praise in the tune of St. Andrew.

  376. Amen.

  377. O Lord, I will exalt your name

  378. for you have rescued me.

  379. You did not let my foes rejoice

  380. and hope triumphantly.

  381. Lord God, in need I cry to you

  382. and you restored my health.

  383. O Lord, you brought me from the grave

  384. and saved my soul from death.

  385. You holy ones sing to the Lord.

  386. Sing out with joyful voice

  387. When you recall his holy name

  388. Let praise him and rejoice

  389. His anger, what an open glass

  390. Life on his river stays

  391. Though tears may last

  392. Throughout the night

  393. Throughout the night

  394. Joy comes with morning's rays

  395. Joy comes with morning's rays

  396. I never shall be moved

  397. I said

  398. In my hostility

  399. You made my mountain

  400. In grenade

  401. Changezil

  402. ritual

  403. Yet

  404. It's my house

  405. My heart was terrified

  406. To you, O Lord, I call the Lord

  407. For mercy, Lord, I cry

  408. We'll turn to read together now God's Word in the book of Acts.

  409. We're reading in chapter 14.

  410. We're taking up our reading at verse 8.

  411. Acts chapter 14, and we'll take up our reading at verse 8.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  412. In here we find Paul and Barnabas.

  413. They've been traveling around different places.

  414. As you see at the beginning of the chapter, they've been in Iconium,

  415. and now they find themselves in Lystra

  416. as they are taking the Word of God to different places

  417. and facing up to many different challenges in the midst of it.

  418. We're going to read then from verse 8,

  419. reading down to verse 28.

  420. Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet,

  421. he was crippled from birth and had never walked.

  422. He listened to Paul speaking.

  423. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well,

  424. said in a loud voice,

  425. Stand upright on your feet.

  426. And he sprang up and began walking.

  427. When the crowd saw what Paul had done,

  428. they lifted up their voices, saying in Lyconium,

  429. the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men.

  430. Barnabas they called Zeus and Paul Hermes,

  431. because he was the chief speaker.

  432. And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city,

  433. brought oxen and garlands to the gates

  434. and wanted to offer sacrifices with the crowds.

  435. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it,

  436. they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd,

  437. crying out,

  438. Men, why are you doing these things?

  439. We also are men of like nature with you,

  440. and we bring you good news,

  441. that you should turn from these vain things

  442. to a living God,

  443. who made the heavens and the earth and the sea

  444. and all that is in them.

  445. In past generations he allowed all the nations

  446. to walk in their own ways.

  447. Yet he did not leave them without witness,

  448. for he did good by giving you rains from heaven

  449. and fruitful seasons,

  450. satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.

  451. Even with these words,

  452. they scarcely restrained the people

  453. from offering sacrifice to them.

  454. But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium,

  455. and having persuaded the crowds,

  456. they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city,

  457. supposing that he was dead.

  458. But when the disciples gathered about him,

  459. he rose up and entered the city,

  460. and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derby.

  461. When they had preached the gospel to that city

  462. and had made many disciples,

  463. they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,

  464. strengthening the souls of the disciples,

  465. encouraging them to continue in their faith,

  466. and saying that through many tribulations

  467. we must enter the kingdom of God.

  468. And when they had appointed elders for them

  469. in every church with prayer and fasting,

  470. they committed them to the Lord

  471. in whom they had believed.

  472. Then they passed through Pisidia

  473. and came to Pamphylia.

  474. And when they had spoken the word in Perga,

  475. they went down to Atalia.

  476. And from there they sailed to Antioch,

  477. where they had been commended to the grace of God

  478. for the work they had fulfilled.

  479. And when they arrived and gathered the church together,

  480. they declared all that God had done with them,

  481. and how he had opened a door of faith

  482. to the Gentiles.

  483. And they remained no little time with the disciples.

  484. Amen.

  485. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  486. Before we come to look at some of that passage,

  487. we'll again sing in Psalm 30.

  488. We'll continue singing in this psalm,

  489. the last verses of the psalm,

  490. verse 9 down to verse 12.

  491. What gain will my destruction bring

  492. if I descend to death?

  493. Will thus proclaim your faithfulness

  494. or praise you with its breast?

  495. Hear as I cry, O Lord my God,

  496. and listen to my plea.

  497. Come to my aid and my distress.

  498. Have mercy, Lord, on me.

  499. We'll sing these four verses

  500. to God's praise in the tune of Spore.

  501. Amen.

  502. What gain will my destruction bring?

  503. And why descend to death?

  504. Well, does your pain

  505. pure faithfulness

  506. or praise you with its breast?

  507. Be thus, I cry, O Lord my God,

  508. and listen to my plea.

  509. Come to my aid and my distress.

  510. You turned my breathing into dust.

  511. For no longer was I sad.

  512. My sad, O God,

  513. You gave me most

  514. What joy that I was died.

  515. Therefore, my heart will sing to you

  516. And never cease to praise

  517. To your great name.

  518. O Lord my God,

  519. I will give thanks always.

  520. Let's turn back to our reading

  521. in the book of Acts, chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  522. We can read again at verse 15.

  523. Men, why are you doing these things?

  524. We also are men of like nature with you,

  525. and we bring you good news

  526. that you should turn from these vain things

  527. to a living God

  528. who made the heaven and the earth and the sea

  529. and all that is in them.

  530. Turn from these vain things

  531. to a living God.

  532. As we read through this passage,

  533. we are reminded so much of the grace of God,

  534. how he deals with his people.

  535. We were thinking last Lord's Day

  536. about God's mercy and wrath.

  537. Remember mercy we were looking at in Habakkuk.

  538. And mercy is a powerful word,

  539. and we see another word

  540. that's powerful here this evening.

  541. Grace.

  542. It is a wonderful thing.

  543. Question is,

  544. have you known it?

  545. Have you known the grace of God

  546. in your own life?

  547. Do you know it even just now?

  548. Do you have it in your heart,

  549. that grace of God in all its power?

  550. Or what is the grace of God?

  551. Perhaps maybe you're not sure just what is.

  552. The grace of God.

  553. Well, grace is a reminder to us

  554. of something that we cannot do ourselves.

  555. It is by grace you have been saved,

  556. Paul says as he writes to the church

  557. at Ephesus through faith.

  558. It is a gift of God.

  559. A gift for what?

  560. For the forgiveness of our sin.

  561. And how is that accomplished?

  562. How are our sins forgiven?

  563. Well, it's a faith that is based

  564. on what Christ himself has done for us.

  565. Martin Luther spoke of grace

  566. in the light of the impossibility of our sin

  567. being forgiven by our own actions.

  568. He spoke of it in this way.

  569. He said,

  570. Since this was impossible for us,

  571. God ordained for us in our place

  572. one who took upon himself

  573. all the punishment we deserve.

  574. He fulfilled the law for us.

  575. He averted the judgment of God from us

  576. and appeased God's wrath.

  577. Grace therefore costs us nothing,

  578. but it costs another much to get it for us.

  579. Grace was purchased with an incalculable,

  580. infinite treasure,

  581. the Son of God himself.

  582. That is the wonder of grace.

  583. What we could never do for ourselves,

  584. God by his grace has done for us

  585. through his Son, Jesus Christ.

  586. And as we look at this passage here in Acts,

  587. that is the grace that we see

  588. when Paul and Barnabas meet with this crowd at Lystra.

  589. They think these two are the gods

  590. who have come down in the form of men,

  591. but they say to them,

  592. No, no, not us.

  593. It's not about us.

  594. We are men just like you.

  595. But they say we bring you good news.

  596. Good news that you should turn

  597. from these vain things to a living God.

  598. And it's this grace that runs through the Bible

  599. from beginning to end,

  600. the wonder of God's grace.

  601. Every time we hear the word of God proclaim,

  602. every Christ-centered sermon,

  603. we hear the grace of God is running through it.

  604. For we are always pointed to the wonder of Christ Jesus

  605. as our Savior.

  606. But there are times.

  607. There are times when we are more aware of it.

  608. There are times when we feel it more

  609. and clearly in our own hearts,

  610. in our own minds,

  611. how clear it is,

  612. especially in terms of how undeserving

  613. we are of this grace.

  614. We don't deserve it.

  615. And that's what grace is all about.

  616. Just like mercy, undeserved,

  617. so grace, undeserved.

  618. And yet God pours it out upon his people

  619. that we might know it through faith in him.

  620. You see grace running through the Old Testament.

  621. You see it through the experience

  622. of God's people with him.

  623. You think of the book of Exodus

  624. and how God dealt graciously with his people there

  625. when he gave the Ten Commandments to Moses.

  626. While Moses was away,

  627. the people started to think

  628. he's not coming back.

  629. He's left us.

  630. So what did they do?

  631. They did what is natural in the heart of man.

  632. They made an idol.

  633. They gathered the gold they could find

  634. and they made a golden calf

  635. that they might worship that calf.

  636. And when Moses came back down,

  637. when he returned,

  638. this is what he found.

  639. This is what God saw.

  640. And yet God graciously

  641. gave the commandments once more.

  642. You see it in chapter 34 of Exodus in verse 6.

  643. As God speaks to Moses

  644. and meets with Moses again

  645. to make new tablets of stone

  646. and to give the commandments,

  647. he says in verse 6,

  648. the Lord passed before him

  649. and proclaimed,

  650. the Lord, the Lord,

  651. a God merciful and gracious,

  652. slow to anger,

  653. and abounding in steadfast love

  654. and faithfulness.

  655. And so he goes on

  656. to remind them of the grace of God there.

  657. Did they deserve it?

  658. No.

  659. And that is grace shown.

  660. The Lord is merciful and gracious

  661. and praise his name that he is.

  662. And so that's what we continue to see

  663. as you go on through the scriptures.

  664. This grace being shown

  665. in the midst of a people

  666. who continually turn away from God.

  667. The reaction as we see

  668. who God is

  669. and his power

  670. and in all his glory,

  671. it should be for us

  672. to just bow before him,

  673. to fall before him,

  674. pleading for mercy.

  675. But is that what we do?

  676. Well, as you see

  677. as you go through the scriptures,

  678. you think even of the children of Israel

  679. in the book of Exodus,

  680. what happened with them?

  681. They blew hot

  682. and they blew cold.

  683. One minute they were trusting God,

  684. the next minute

  685. they were seeing something

  686. more appealing,

  687. another God,

  688. another idol

  689. they could worship

  690. that would help them more

  691. than the living God

  692. as we read of here.

  693. And so as we come

  694. into the book of Acts,

  695. what we're seeing

  696. is this ongoing dilemma

  697. of the people of this world.

  698. How we turn away

  699. from the living God,

  700. turn to our idols,

  701. and worship them

  702. and the grace of God,

  703. the mercy of God

  704. is that he calls us back.

  705. And that's what Paul

  706. and Barnabas

  707. are doing here.

  708. We see a similar people

  709. with a similar problem,

  710. but with that same grace

  711. still surrounding them

  712. and still to this day.

  713. In the beginning of this chapter

  714. and when they were in Iconium,

  715. in verse 3 there,

  716. you read of the grace

  717. being preached there.

  718. So they remained

  719. for a long time

  720. speaking boldly of the Lord

  721. who bore witness

  722. to the word of his grace.

  723. They ministered the word of God

  724. and in the midst

  725. of the challenges

  726. that they faced,

  727. even stoning us,

  728. we see,

  729. they continued

  730. to proclaim

  731. the good news.

  732. This morning,

  733. Colin, I think,

  734. was preaching on

  735. the theme of

  736. the living church.

  737. And we need grace

  738. to be

  739. the living church.

  740. And this evening,

  741. we're thinking

  742. of the grace

  743. that we receive

  744. from the living God.

  745. There is a living God

  746. that is the heart

  747. of our church.

  748. Turn from these vain things,

  749. in verse 15,

  750. to a living God

  751. who made the heaven

  752. and the earth

  753. and the sea

  754. and all

  755. that is in them.

  756. We need grace preached.

  757. We need grace received.

  758. We need grace lived

  759. in our midst

  760. to be a living church,

  761. worshipping

  762. the living God.

  763. And so do we see

  764. this God

  765. in our midst?

  766. Do we have

  767. this God

  768. in our midst?

  769. Are we looking

  770. and trusting

  771. to him

  772. in all things?

  773. I want us to see

  774. three things

  775. from these verses

  776. before us

  777. just to remind us

  778. to always have our eyes

  779. on the living God

  780. and the good news

  781. that he gives.

  782. And the first thing

  783. we see

  784. is the same old problems.

  785. Then secondly,

  786. we'll see

  787. that there's no more excuses.

  788. And then thirdly,

  789. we'll see

  790. that the gospel

  791. is key.

  792. The gospel

  793. is at the heart.

  794. So the first thing

  795. we see

  796. is the same

  797. old problems.

  798. When you go back

  799. to the book

  800. of Ecclesiastes

  801. in the Old Testament

  802. in the first chapter

  803. there,

  804. it's a powerful book

  805. that reminds us

  806. of what our life

  807. is like.

  808. And in verse 9

  809. it says this,

  810. what has been

  811. is what will be

  812. and what has been done

  813. is what will be done

  814. and there is nothing new

  815. under the sun.

  816. The cycle

  817. of life

  818. just going on,

  819. going around

  820. all the time.

  821. What has been

  822. will be

  823. and what has been done

  824. is what will be done.

  825. Nothing new

  826. under the sun.

  827. It's the same

  828. old problems

  829. over and over

  830. again.

  831. And so that even

  832. as you think of

  833. the Exodus time,

  834. here we are

  835. more than

  836. maybe a thousand

  837. years later

  838. when we come

  839. to the book of Acts

  840. and you would think

  841. the people,

  842. well they're bound

  843. to have learned.

  844. They're bound

  845. to have made progress.

  846. They're bound

  847. to have learned

  848. from all the different

  849. experiences

  850. of seeing

  851. God's punishment

  852. on their sin

  853. in the Old Testament

  854. times when they were

  855. taken into captivity

  856. and yet his mercy

  857. and his grace

  858. in restoring them.

  859. They've come

  860. to see the cross,

  861. the fulfillment

  862. and the wonder

  863. of God's love.

  864. They've seen

  865. Christ crucified.

  866. They're hearing

  867. this gospel message.

  868. They're bound

  869. to have learned.

  870. They're bound

  871. to have made progress.

  872. They're bound

  873. to be living,

  874. worshipping God

  875. with all their hearts

  876. now.

  877. In many ways

  878. progress has been made

  879. in terms of buildings

  880. and cities

  881. and economies

  882. that have expanded

  883. and flourished

  884. throughout all different

  885. kinds of places.

  886. That's what the book

  887. of Acts

  888. so highlights for us

  889. the different places

  890. the gospel was going to.

  891. The gospel was spreading.

  892. So yes,

  893. things have progressed.

  894. Things have developed.

  895. And yet more knowledge

  896. isn't always the answer.

  897. Because the same problems

  898. still exist.

  899. And this great problem

  900. still exists.

  901. The problem

  902. that the people had

  903. in the days of Moses

  904. is still the same problem

  905. here in the book of Acts.

  906. It's still the same problem

  907. today.

  908. And what is

  909. that great problem?

  910. Well, the problem is

  911. a people

  912. turning from

  913. the living God

  914. and turning

  915. to worship

  916. idols.

  917. Idols that take

  918. all kinds

  919. of forms.

  920. Idols that take

  921. all kinds of shapes.

  922. Idols that we don't

  923. even see.

  924. And yet

  925. we worship them.

  926. Just as they do here

  927. in the book

  928. of Acts.

  929. And what you see

  930. here is just

  931. how quickly

  932. the hearts

  933. can turn

  934. towards

  935. idols.

  936. You see it here

  937. in verse 11.

  938. When they had healed

  939. this man

  940. who was crippled

  941. from birth,

  942. what happened?

  943. People were amazed.

  944. In verse 11,

  945. when the crowd

  946. saw what Paul

  947. had done,

  948. they lifted up

  949. their voices

  950. saying in Lyconian,

  951. the gods

  952. have come down

  953. to us

  954. in the likeness

  955. of men.

  956. And what did

  957. they do?

  958. They made

  959. Paul and Barnabas

  960. their gods.

  961. Barnabas

  962. they called

  963. Zeus

  964. and Paul

  965. Hermes.

  966. These

  967. were the gods

  968. they felt

  969. they were looking

  970. for.

  971. They were looking

  972. to men.

  973. Just a wee

  974. aside here

  975. as we think

  976. of our own

  977. situation

  978. as a congregation

  979. going forward.

  980. What are we

  981. looking for

  982. when we think

  983. of ministry

  984. going forward?

  985. We don't

  986. look

  987. for men.

  988. We don't

  989. look

  990. for someone

  991. who is going

  992. to lead

  993. this church.

  994. We don't

  995. look for a man

  996. in that sense

  997. but to the

  998. living God.

  999. That is

  1000. where we are

  1001. to look.

  1002. any preacher

  1003. is here

  1004. to point

  1005. to the

  1006. living God

  1007. and not

  1008. to ourselves.

  1009. And that's

  1010. what Paul

  1011. and Barnabas

  1012. do here.

  1013. That's what

  1014. they say

  1015. in verse 15.

  1016. We are men

  1017. of like

  1018. nature

  1019. with you.

  1020. That is

  1021. all we

  1022. are.

  1023. As the saying

  1024. goes,

  1025. the best

  1026. of men

  1027. are men

  1028. at best.

  1029. So let's

  1030. not fall

  1031. into the

  1032. trap

  1033. of looking

  1034. to man

  1035. but looking

  1036. to the

  1037. living God.

  1038. But when

  1039. they say

  1040. this,

  1041. when they

  1042. saw

  1043. the fact

  1044. that this

  1045. healing

  1046. had taken

  1047. place,

  1048. they say

  1049. in verse

  1050. 11,

  1051. the gods

  1052. have come

  1053. down to

  1054. us in

  1055. the likeness

  1056. of men.

  1057. Look how

  1058. close they

  1059. are to

  1060. the truth.

  1061. Look how

  1062. close they

  1063. are to the

  1064. truth.

  1065. the gods

  1066. have come

  1067. down to

  1068. us in

  1069. the likeness

  1070. of men.

  1071. It's like

  1072. it's in

  1073. their heart

  1074. to look

  1075. for God.

  1076. They're

  1077. looking for

  1078. God to

  1079. come down.

  1080. They're

  1081. just looking

  1082. at the

  1083. wrong God.

  1084. God

  1085. came down

  1086. in the

  1087. person of

  1088. Jesus Christ.

  1089. There's no

  1090. one else

  1091. we need

  1092. to look

  1093. to.

  1094. He is

  1095. God of

  1096. gods.

  1097. He is

  1098. King of

  1099. kings.

  1100. He is

  1101. Lord of

  1102. lords.

  1103. They

  1104. have this

  1105. confession

  1106. that's so

  1107. close to

  1108. the truth

  1109. and yet

  1110. so far

  1111. away.

  1112. And so

  1113. for ourselves

  1114. too,

  1115. we must

  1116. think to

  1117. ourselves,

  1118. what God

  1119. are we

  1120. looking to?

  1121. Do we

  1122. fall into

  1123. the same

  1124. old problems

  1125. of making

  1126. idols or

  1127. looking to

  1128. the false

  1129. gods?

  1130. You see

  1131. here they

  1132. even had

  1133. names for

  1134. their gods,

  1135. Zeus and

  1136. Hermes.

  1137. These were

  1138. the gods

  1139. that the

  1140. people were

  1141. looking to

  1142. for prosperity

  1143. and they

  1144. wanted to

  1145. please these

  1146. gods.

  1147. They were

  1148. willing to

  1149. offer

  1150. sacrifices

  1151. to these

  1152. gods straight

  1153. away in

  1154. the person

  1155. of Paul

  1156. and Barnabas.

  1157. But they

  1158. say,

  1159. no,

  1160. it's not

  1161. us.

  1162. How foolish

  1163. it may be

  1164. looks to you

  1165. and I

  1166. today that

  1167. they would

  1168. do this

  1169. before any

  1170. men,

  1171. before anyone,

  1172. that they

  1173. would make

  1174. these kinds

  1175. of offerings.

  1176. And yet,

  1177. in our own

  1178. hearts,

  1179. we put other

  1180. things before

  1181. God.

  1182. God,

  1183. and that

  1184. is what

  1185. idolatry

  1186. is.

  1187. The foolishness

  1188. of idolatry.

  1189. Somebody once

  1190. put it like

  1191. this,

  1192. you are not

  1193. a fool

  1194. just because

  1195. you have

  1196. done something

  1197. foolish,

  1198. only if the

  1199. folly of it

  1200. escapes you.

  1201. Doing something

  1202. foolish is not

  1203. what foolishness

  1204. is about.

  1205. It's not

  1206. recognizing the

  1207. foolishness in

  1208. it.

  1209. And that's

  1210. the people

  1211. here.

  1212. And that's

  1213. so often

  1214. what our

  1215. own hearts

  1216. can be

  1217. like as

  1218. well.

  1219. We don't

  1220. think it's

  1221. foolish because

  1222. we don't

  1223. see the

  1224. foolishness

  1225. in it

  1226. until it's

  1227. pointed out

  1228. to us.

  1229. And that's

  1230. what Paul

  1231. and Barnabas

  1232. do here

  1233. in verse

  1234. 15.

  1235. They point

  1236. out this

  1237. foolishness.

  1238. Men,

  1239. why are you

  1240. doing these

  1241. things?

  1242. Why are you

  1243. doing these

  1244. things?

  1245. Stop what

  1246. you are doing.

  1247. we are not

  1248. the gods

  1249. that you

  1250. are looking

  1251. for.

  1252. But let

  1253. us tell

  1254. you of

  1255. another.

  1256. We want

  1257. to point

  1258. you to

  1259. the living

  1260. God.

  1261. The one

  1262. who is

  1263. God.

  1264. And there

  1265. is no

  1266. other.

  1267. The same

  1268. old problems

  1269. still exist

  1270. because we

  1271. don't put

  1272. God first.

  1273. We look

  1274. to men.

  1275. So we are

  1276. to look

  1277. to the

  1278. living God.

  1279. The second

  1280. thing we see

  1281. here is

  1282. there is no

  1283. more excuses.

  1284. We are

  1285. so apt

  1286. at making

  1287. excuses for

  1288. all our

  1289. faults.

  1290. We become

  1291. experts from

  1292. a young age

  1293. trying to

  1294. hide our

  1295. faults,

  1296. making excuses

  1297. for what we

  1298. do wrong.

  1299. It is

  1300. somebody else's

  1301. fault or

  1302. something else's

  1303. fault.

  1304. You can

  1305. think of

  1306. making excuses

  1307. for not

  1308. doing your

  1309. homework,

  1310. for being

  1311. late for

  1312. something.

  1313. All of

  1314. these kinds

  1315. of things

  1316. are from a

  1317. very early

  1318. age.

  1319. We start

  1320. making

  1321. excuses.

  1322. But do we

  1323. have an

  1324. excuse?

  1325. Do you have

  1326. an excuse

  1327. for not

  1328. believing in

  1329. the living

  1330. God?

  1331. Do you have

  1332. an excuse

  1333. that will

  1334. satisfy God

  1335. when he

  1336. comes as

  1337. to the

  1338. reason why

  1339. you would

  1340. not believe,

  1341. you would

  1342. not trust

  1343. fully in

  1344. this living

  1345. God?

  1346. Paul and

  1347. Barnabas here

  1348. show the

  1349. people that

  1350. have no

  1351. excuse for

  1352. not believing

  1353. in God.

  1354. There are

  1355. no words

  1356. that we

  1357. can offer

  1358. up that

  1359. will appease

  1360. God.

  1361. And you

  1362. see it in

  1363. the end of

  1364. verse 15

  1365. into verse

  1366. 16.

  1367. They're

  1368. pointing them

  1369. towards the

  1370. living God

  1371. who made

  1372. the heavens

  1373. and the

  1374. earth and

  1375. the sea

  1376. and all

  1377. that is

  1378. in them.

  1379. In past

  1380. generations he

  1381. allowed all

  1382. the nations

  1383. to walk

  1384. in their

  1385. own ways,

  1386. yet he

  1387. did not

  1388. leave himself

  1389. without witness.

  1390. He did

  1391. not leave

  1392. himself

  1393. without witness.

  1394. There is

  1395. evidence for

  1396. God all

  1397. around us

  1398. that we

  1399. are not

  1400. without

  1401. excuse.

  1402. The living

  1403. God is

  1404. the one

  1405. that we

  1406. are to

  1407. look to.

  1408. God

  1409. allowed,

  1410. it says

  1411. here,

  1412. his people

  1413. to go

  1414. their own

  1415. ways.

  1416. They were

  1417. free,

  1418. just as we

  1419. are today,

  1420. to do

  1421. what we

  1422. want,

  1423. but they're

  1424. not without

  1425. excuse.

  1426. God

  1427. and this

  1428. is the

  1429. reality of

  1430. this verse

  1431. for ourselves

  1432. today as

  1433. well.

  1434. God

  1435. leaving us

  1436. to our

  1437. own

  1438. devices,

  1439. you see

  1440. it in

  1441. the book

  1442. of Romans

  1443. as well,

  1444. we'll quote

  1445. that in

  1446. just a

  1447. moment,

  1448. but he

  1449. leaves people

  1450. to their

  1451. own

  1452. desires.

  1453. He

  1454. gives them

  1455. over to

  1456. their own

  1457. desires.

  1458. He

  1459. allowed all

  1460. the nations

  1461. to walk

  1462. in their

  1463. own ways.

  1464. And again,

  1465. we could

  1466. just apply

  1467. that to

  1468. ourselves

  1469. today as

  1470. nations of

  1471. the world.

  1472. We are

  1473. walking so

  1474. much in

  1475. our own

  1476. ways.

  1477. We are

  1478. turning from

  1479. the living

  1480. God and

  1481. going our

  1482. own ways,

  1483. doing our

  1484. own things.

  1485. But even

  1486. then,

  1487. we are not

  1488. left without

  1489. God's

  1490. testimony to

  1491. us in

  1492. what is

  1493. known as

  1494. common

  1495. grace.

  1496. And we

  1497. see that

  1498. in verse

  1499. 17.

  1500. Yet he

  1501. did not

  1502. leave himself

  1503. without witness,

  1504. for he

  1505. did good

  1506. by giving

  1507. you rains

  1508. from heaven

  1509. and fruitful

  1510. seasons,

  1511. satisfying your

  1512. hearts with

  1513. food and

  1514. gladness.

  1515. They are

  1516. pointing them

  1517. here to

  1518. the fact

  1519. that this

  1520. living God,

  1521. this is the

  1522. God of

  1523. prosperity.

  1524. This is the

  1525. God who is

  1526. able to

  1527. bless.

  1528. This is the

  1529. God who is

  1530. able, the

  1531. only God

  1532. who is

  1533. able to

  1534. provide.

  1535. He is

  1536. the one

  1537. who has

  1538. made the

  1539. heaven and

  1540. the earth

  1541. and the

  1542. sea and

  1543. all that

  1544. is in

  1545. him.

  1546. So as

  1547. we look

  1548. around,

  1549. we are

  1550. without

  1551. excuse.

  1552. That is

  1553. common

  1554. grace,

  1555. what we

  1556. all see.

  1557. But it's

  1558. only God's

  1559. special grace

  1560. that can

  1561. help us

  1562. to fully

  1563. see and

  1564. to understand.

  1565. But we're

  1566. without

  1567. excuse.

  1568. As I

  1569. said,

  1570. the book

  1571. of Romans,

  1572. it shows

  1573. it to us

  1574. there as

  1575. well.

  1576. In chapter

  1577. 1,

  1578. verse 18,

  1579. it says,

  1580. the wrath

  1581. of God

  1582. is revealed

  1583. from heaven

  1584. against all

  1585. ungodliness

  1586. and unrighteousness

  1587. of men,

  1588. who by their

  1589. unrighteousness

  1590. suppress the

  1591. truth.

  1592. For that

  1593. can be

  1594. known,

  1595. for what

  1596. can be

  1597. known about

  1598. God is

  1599. plain to

  1600. them,

  1601. because God

  1602. has shown

  1603. it to

  1604. them.

  1605. For his

  1606. invisible

  1607. attributes,

  1608. namely,

  1609. his eternal

  1610. power and

  1611. divine nature,

  1612. have been

  1613. clearly perceived

  1614. ever since the

  1615. creation of

  1616. the world,

  1617. in the

  1618. things that

  1619. have been

  1620. made,

  1621. so they

  1622. are without

  1623. excuse.

  1624. There is

  1625. no excuse,

  1626. because we

  1627. see by

  1628. common grace

  1629. the living

  1630. God is

  1631. all around

  1632. us.

  1633. So it's

  1634. not a case

  1635. of making

  1636. an excuse.

  1637. Nobody

  1638. told me.

  1639. If only I

  1640. had known,

  1641. I would have

  1642. done something

  1643. about it.

  1644. I would have

  1645. believed.

  1646. That's not

  1647. an excuse,

  1648. because the

  1649. evidence of

  1650. God is

  1651. all around

  1652. us.

  1653. But we

  1654. want to

  1655. suppress it.

  1656. We want to

  1657. put it down

  1658. by our

  1659. nature and

  1660. look to

  1661. ourselves or

  1662. to something

  1663. else.

  1664. But there's

  1665. no excuse.

  1666. Imagine,

  1667. even this

  1668. evening,

  1669. if a

  1670. knock came

  1671. to the

  1672. door of

  1673. this church

  1674. and it's

  1675. the Lord.

  1676. You hear

  1677. it.

  1678. You hear

  1679. him at the

  1680. door and

  1681. someone says,

  1682. it is the

  1683. Lord.

  1684. The word

  1685. says he

  1686. is coming

  1687. and we

  1688. don't know

  1689. when he

  1690. will come

  1691. like a

  1692. thief in

  1693. the night.

  1694. Are you

  1695. ready?

  1696. Are you

  1697. ready when

  1698. you hear

  1699. that knock?

  1700. Would you

  1701. need to

  1702. try and

  1703. make an

  1704. excuse

  1705. tonight if

  1706. the Lord

  1707. returned,

  1708. to come

  1709. stumbling

  1710. before him,

  1711. trying to

  1712. get words

  1713. out, but

  1714. there's no

  1715. words,

  1716. because there

  1717. is no

  1718. excuse.

  1719. Nobody

  1720. told me.

  1721. Not an

  1722. excuse.

  1723. the whole

  1724. of this

  1725. creation, it

  1726. speaks to

  1727. you of

  1728. God.

  1729. It's no

  1730. excuse.

  1731. I couldn't

  1732. believe because

  1733. the evidence

  1734. wasn't there.

  1735. It is.

  1736. He has

  1737. given us

  1738. the sign.

  1739. He has

  1740. given us,

  1741. He has

  1742. shown us

  1743. through the

  1744. wonder of

  1745. the gospel,

  1746. through His

  1747. giving His

  1748. Son,

  1749. through His

  1750. crucifixion,

  1751. through His

  1752. resurrection.

  1753. It is all

  1754. there.

  1755. We are

  1756. without

  1757. excuse.

  1758. There is

  1759. no excuse.

  1760. So are

  1761. you ready?

  1762. If that

  1763. knock comes,

  1764. are you

  1765. going to

  1766. go and

  1767. give an

  1768. excuse,

  1769. or are

  1770. you going

  1771. to go

  1772. and say

  1773. like Mary

  1774. who saw

  1775. the risen

  1776. Lord and

  1777. said,

  1778. Rabboni,

  1779. when she

  1780. heard her

  1781. name being

  1782. called?

  1783. Are you

  1784. ready to

  1785. grasp your

  1786. Savior?

  1787. The grace

  1788. that He

  1789. has shown

  1790. you,

  1791. have you

  1792. received it?

  1793. Are you

  1794. overwhelmed by

  1795. it?

  1796. Are you

  1797. overpowered

  1798. by it?

  1799. That it

  1800. fills you

  1801. with joy,

  1802. fills you

  1803. with emotion

  1804. that the

  1805. Lord would

  1806. remember

  1807. you.

  1808. There is

  1809. no excuse.

  1810. The

  1811. Lord,

  1812. He is

  1813. the living

  1814. God,

  1815. and He

  1816. is the

  1817. one that

  1818. we are

  1819. to look

  1820. to.

  1821. So there's

  1822. no excuse.

  1823. And what

  1824. is it that's

  1825. the key to

  1826. this grace?

  1827. Well,

  1828. thirdly and

  1829. finally,

  1830. we see

  1831. here the

  1832. gospel is

  1833. key to

  1834. everything.

  1835. The grace

  1836. of God

  1837. that is

  1838. seen through

  1839. the gospel.

  1840. There's

  1841. something

  1842. different in

  1843. these verses.

  1844. There's

  1845. something that

  1846. has changed

  1847. in these

  1848. verses.

  1849. It says,

  1850. in past

  1851. generations,

  1852. He allowed

  1853. all the

  1854. nations to

  1855. walk in

  1856. their own

  1857. ways.

  1858. Now,

  1859. what is

  1860. new?

  1861. What is

  1862. different?

  1863. Well,

  1864. there is

  1865. a testimony.

  1866. There is

  1867. a testimony.

  1868. There's

  1869. no excuse

  1870. because we

  1871. have the

  1872. gospel.

  1873. And we

  1874. see this

  1875. in verse

  1876. 15,

  1877. going back

  1878. to that

  1879. verse.

  1880. Men,

  1881. why are

  1882. you doing

  1883. these things?

  1884. Why are

  1885. you following

  1886. your hearts

  1887. that are

  1888. just full

  1889. of idolatry?

  1890. Why are

  1891. you doing

  1892. these things?

  1893. we also

  1894. are men

  1895. of like

  1896. nature

  1897. with you.

  1898. But they

  1899. say,

  1900. we bring

  1901. you good

  1902. news.

  1903. We bring

  1904. you good

  1905. news that

  1906. you should

  1907. turn from

  1908. these vain

  1909. things to

  1910. the living

  1911. God.

  1912. That is

  1913. what the

  1914. gospel is

  1915. about.

  1916. Why are

  1917. you doing

  1918. these things?

  1919. Why are

  1920. we going

  1921. on in

  1922. this way?

  1923. We need

  1924. to turn

  1925. to the

  1926. living God.

  1927. Not because

  1928. we are afraid

  1929. of the

  1930. consequences

  1931. of not

  1932. doing so,

  1933. but realizing

  1934. what the

  1935. good news

  1936. means,

  1937. what the

  1938. good news

  1939. tells us.

  1940. It tells

  1941. us of the

  1942. wonder of

  1943. salvation

  1944. in Christ.

  1945. The wonder

  1946. of forgiveness

  1947. for our

  1948. sin through

  1949. him.

  1950. That we

  1951. turn from

  1952. these worthless

  1953. things,

  1954. these things

  1955. that cannot

  1956. save us,

  1957. these gods

  1958. as they have

  1959. made them,

  1960. that are

  1961. dead.

  1962. They can't

  1963. hear,

  1964. they can't

  1965. do anything.

  1966. But we

  1967. look to

  1968. the living

  1969. God,

  1970. to the

  1971. risen Lord,

  1972. to the

  1973. Son of

  1974. God who

  1975. is at

  1976. the right

  1977. hand of

  1978. God on

  1979. high,

  1980. the Lord

  1981. who is

  1982. making

  1983. intercession

  1984. for us.

  1985. We look

  1986. to the

  1987. living God.

  1988. That is

  1989. the good

  1990. news.

  1991. That if

  1992. the Lord

  1993. returns

  1994. tonight,

  1995. if he

  1996. knocks on

  1997. our door

  1998. tonight,

  1999. that we

  2000. can be

  2001. ready by

  2002. the gospel,

  2003. by faith

  2004. in Jesus

  2005. Christ.

  2006. Oswald

  2007. Chambers,

  2008. in one of

  2009. his books,

  2010. he says

  2011. this,

  2012. it is not

  2013. repentance

  2014. that saves

  2015. me.

  2016. Repentance

  2017. is a sign

  2018. that I

  2019. realize what

  2020. God has

  2021. done in

  2022. Christ Jesus.

  2023. The danger

  2024. is to put

  2025. the emphasis

  2026. on the

  2027. effect instead

  2028. of on

  2029. the cause.

  2030. Is it my

  2031. obedience that

  2032. puts me

  2033. right with

  2034. God?

  2035. Never.

  2036. I am

  2037. put right

  2038. with God

  2039. because prior

  2040. to all

  2041. else,

  2042. Christ died.

  2043. When I

  2044. turn to

  2045. God and

  2046. by belief

  2047. accept what

  2048. God reveals

  2049. instantly,

  2050. the stupendous

  2051. atonement of

  2052. Jesus Christ

  2053. rushes me

  2054. into a

  2055. right relationship

  2056. with God.

  2057. By the

  2058. miracle of

  2059. God's grace,

  2060. I stand

  2061. justified,

  2062. not because of

  2063. anything I have

  2064. done,

  2065. but because

  2066. of what

  2067. Jesus has

  2068. done.

  2069. The salvation

  2070. of God

  2071. does not

  2072. stand on

  2073. human logic.

  2074. It stands

  2075. on the

  2076. sacrificial

  2077. death of

  2078. Jesus.

  2079. Sinful men

  2080. and women

  2081. can be

  2082. changed into

  2083. new creatures

  2084. by the

  2085. marvelous work

  2086. of God

  2087. in Christ

  2088. Jesus.

  2089. That is

  2090. the wonder

  2091. of the

  2092. grace of

  2093. God through

  2094. his gospel,

  2095. the good

  2096. news.

  2097. Men and

  2098. women,

  2099. sinful men

  2100. and women

  2101. changed into

  2102. new creatures

  2103. by the

  2104. marvelous work

  2105. of God

  2106. in Christ

  2107. Jesus.

  2108. The grace

  2109. that he has

  2110. shown to

  2111. us.

  2112. Grace is to

  2113. put our

  2114. trust in

  2115. him who

  2116. is able to

  2117. save,

  2118. for we

  2119. cannot save

  2120. ourselves.

  2121. We see

  2122. grace at the

  2123. start of

  2124. this chapter

  2125. when they're

  2126. speaking there

  2127. of how

  2128. they bore

  2129. witness to

  2130. the word

  2131. of his

  2132. grace in

  2133. verse 3.

  2134. It is

  2135. grace that

  2136. ends this

  2137. chapter as

  2138. well.

  2139. As they

  2140. returned,

  2141. as they

  2142. went back

  2143. to the

  2144. place from

  2145. which they

  2146. were sent,

  2147. the church

  2148. had declared

  2149. in them

  2150. how the

  2151. grace of

  2152. God

  2153. had been

  2154. commended to

  2155. them,

  2156. it says in

  2157. verse 26,

  2158. where they

  2159. had been

  2160. commended to

  2161. the grace

  2162. of God

  2163. for the

  2164. work that

  2165. they had

  2166. fulfilled.

  2167. It is

  2168. grace that

  2169. sent them.

  2170. It is

  2171. grace that

  2172. kept them.

  2173. And so it

  2174. is this

  2175. grace that

  2176. we need to

  2177. be a living

  2178. church, to

  2179. look to a

  2180. living God.

  2181. There is

  2182. common grace

  2183. that leaves us

  2184. without excuse,

  2185. but it is a

  2186. special grace

  2187. that reminds us

  2188. of all that we

  2189. have in

  2190. Christ.

  2191. Christ.

  2192. We so

  2193. often in

  2194. our lives,

  2195. we step

  2196. into the

  2197. unknown.

  2198. We don't

  2199. know what's

  2200. ahead of us,

  2201. but we know

  2202. one who

  2203. does.

  2204. A little

  2205. story, just

  2206. as we finish,

  2207. of a couple

  2208. who took

  2209. their children

  2210. on holiday.

  2211. Young

  2212. children, a

  2213. son who

  2214. was 11,

  2215. and a

  2216. daughter who

  2217. was 7.

  2218. This was in

  2219. America, and

  2220. they took

  2221. them to one

  2222. of the big

  2223. national parks

  2224. there.

  2225. And one

  2226. day they

  2227. took them

  2228. to explore

  2229. some of

  2230. the deep

  2231. caves in

  2232. this national

  2233. park.

  2234. And they

  2235. were part

  2236. of a party

  2237. that was

  2238. being led

  2239. by a guide

  2240. deep under

  2241. the earth

  2242. into these

  2243. caves.

  2244. And at

  2245. one point

  2246. when they

  2247. were way

  2248. into the

  2249. cave in

  2250. one of

  2251. the deepest

  2252. parts,

  2253. just to

  2254. make the

  2255. effect more

  2256. dramatic,

  2257. the guide

  2258. switched off

  2259. his light.

  2260. And the

  2261. whole cave

  2262. was plunged

  2263. into darkness.

  2264. No one

  2265. could see

  2266. a thing.

  2267. The little

  2268. girl was

  2269. scared, and

  2270. she started

  2271. to cry.

  2272. Then she

  2273. heard her

  2274. brother's voice

  2275. saying,

  2276. don't cry.

  2277. Somebody here

  2278. knows how

  2279. to turn on

  2280. the lights.

  2281. And that's

  2282. the wonder

  2283. of the

  2284. gospel.

  2285. There are

  2286. times when we

  2287. are taken

  2288. into a place

  2289. where there

  2290. seems to be

  2291. just darkness

  2292. all around

  2293. us.

  2294. But the

  2295. good news

  2296. is that we

  2297. have a

  2298. living God.

  2299. A living

  2300. God who

  2301. pours his

  2302. light upon

  2303. us.

  2304. Yes,

  2305. they were so

  2306. close to the

  2307. truth here.

  2308. The gods

  2309. have come

  2310. down to

  2311. us in the

  2312. likeness of

  2313. men.

  2314. We know

  2315. through grace

  2316. that God

  2317. has come

  2318. down in

  2319. the likeness

  2320. of man,

  2321. in his

  2322. son,

  2323. Christ

  2324. Jesus.

  2325. The one

  2326. who is the

  2327. light of

  2328. the world.

  2329. And it is

  2330. his grace,

  2331. it is his

  2332. favor that

  2333. we seek.

  2334. We see

  2335. in this

  2336. passage the

  2337. same old

  2338. problems that

  2339. keep repeating

  2340. themselves again

  2341. and again.

  2342. How quickly

  2343. we can turn

  2344. from the

  2345. living God

  2346. and look to

  2347. the idols

  2348. of this

  2349. world.

  2350. But we

  2351. see we

  2352. are without

  2353. excuse.

  2354. But praise

  2355. God we

  2356. see his

  2357. grace in

  2358. the good

  2359. news that

  2360. we can turn

  2361. from these

  2362. vain things

  2363. to the

  2364. living God

  2365. who is the

  2366. God of

  2367. all grace

  2368. and the

  2369. God of

  2370. all miracles.

  2371. May we

  2372. praise his

  2373. name and

  2374. seek his

  2375. blessing.

  2376. Let us

  2377. pray.

  2378. our

  2379. father in

  2380. heaven we

  2381. do rejoice

  2382. in your

  2383. goodness to

  2384. us.

  2385. We thank

  2386. you for

  2387. your grace

  2388. and the

  2389. wonder of

  2390. it.

  2391. Undeserving

  2392. as we

  2393. are you

  2394. have poured

  2395. it out

  2396. upon us.

  2397. And we

  2398. thank you

  2399. that it is

  2400. so shown

  2401. to us at

  2402. the cross

  2403. where we

  2404. see your

  2405. love in

  2406. giving your

  2407. son that

  2408. he would

  2409. bear our

  2410. sins.

  2411. We thank

  2412. you for

  2413. that good

  2414. news of

  2415. a living

  2416. God.

  2417. And so

  2418. turn our

  2419. hearts away

  2420. from the

  2421. idols that

  2422. we so

  2423. easily put

  2424. there and

  2425. help us to

  2426. fix our

  2427. eyes on

  2428. the living

  2429. God that

  2430. you would

  2431. go before

  2432. us in

  2433. all things

  2434. pardoning

  2435. our sin

  2436. in Jesus

  2437. name.

  2438. Amen.

  2439. We're going

  2440. to conclude

  2441. by singing

  2442. to God's

  2443. praise in

  2444. Psalm 145.

  2445. This is

  2446. in the

  2447. Scottish

  2448. Psalter

  2449. version

  2450. page

  2451. 442.

  2452. Psalm 145

  2453. the first

  2454. version at

  2455. verse 7

  2456. and we

  2457. sing down

  2458. to verse

  2459. 9.

  2460. The tune

  2461. is Effingham

  2462. The memory

  2463. of thy

  2464. goodness

  2465. great

  2466. they largely

  2467. shall express

  2468. with songs

  2469. of praise

  2470. they shall

  2471. extol thy

  2472. perfect

  2473. righteousness

  2474. the Lord

  2475. is very

  2476. gracious

  2477. in him

  2478. compassion

  2479. flow

  2480. in mercy

  2481. he is ever

  2482. great

  2483. and is

  2484. to anger

  2485. slow.

  2486. We'll sing

  2487. from verse

  2488. 7 to 9

  2489. to God's

  2490. praise.

  2491. Amen.

  2492. Amen.

  2493. Amen.

  2494. The memory

  2495. of thy

  2496. goodness

  2497. great

  2498. they

  2499. harshly

  2500. shall

  2501. sight

  2502. prayer

  2503. means

  2504. the

  2505. world

  2506. is

  2507. stead

  2508. In him compassion's hope.

2509. In mercy he is very late,

2510. And is to anger store.

2511. The Lord Jehovah unto all,

  2512. His goodness of delay,

2513. And over all his other works,

  2514. His tenderer, Jesus.

2515. After the benediction, I'll go to the main door.

  2516. We'll close the benediction.

2517. Now may grace, mercy, and peace

2518. from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

2519. be upon you all, now and forevermore.

  2520. Amen.

  2521. Amen.

  2522. Amen.

  2523. Amen.
