  1. We'll begin our worship this evening. We're going to sing to God's praise in Psalm 103.

  2. Psalm 103, the Scottish Psalter version, page 369.

  3. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 5. The tune is Kilmarnock.

  4. O thou, my soul, bless God the Lord, and all that in me is,

  5. be stood up his holy name to magnify and bless.

  6. Bless, O my soul, the Lord thy God, and not forgetful be of all his gracious benefits he hath bestowed on thee.

  7. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5 to God's praise.

  8. He's steadfast.

  9. He's steadfast.

  10. He's steadfast.

  11. He's steadfast.

  12. He's steadfast.

  13. He's steadfast.

  14. He's steadfast.

  15. He's steadfast.

  16. Of all his gracious benefits, he hath bestowed on thee.

  17. All thy inequity to the most gracious be forgiven.

  18. Through thy diseases, all that things, thou heal and be re-eating.

  19. Could thou redeem thy life after, to death which sought for done?

  20. Through thee with loving kindness of and tenderest he's come.

  21. Through thy abundance of good things, thou satisfy thy love.

  22. So that he must be evil, saint, trade you with his thy youth.

  23. Let's come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  24. Amen.

  25. Our gracious Father in heaven, as we come once more to worship, to sing praise together as your people,

  26. to come and hear your words speak to us, to come and offer up our prayers to you.

  27. We thank you that you alone are God, you are the one who is able to hear all that comes from our hearts and our lips this night.

  28. Even the very groanings that we utter in our hearts, Lord, they are known to you.

  29. For you know us in that great way.

  30. You know us as our Father in heaven.

  31. You know us as our Lord and our God.

  32. And we pray that you will stir us up in our time of worship.

  33. That you will help us, Lord, to worship you in that right spirit.

  34. Even with the words that we have just sung.

  35. That from our very souls we would bless the Lord with all that is within us.

  36. That you would stir us up by your holy name to magnify and bless you.

  37. That you would become more and more of our focus in this time of worship.

  38. That you would take away the distractions that so often fill our minds.

  39. Even the thoughts of what may lie ahead for us in this coming week.

  40. The things that may be cluttering up our inboxes.

  41. The things that can be important in their own self.

  42. But as we come just now, Lord, we just ask that in looking ahead to the week and the days that lie ahead.

  43. That you will help us in this time to be refreshed through your word.

  44. To be strengthened by it.

  45. To be encouraged through it.

  46. To be built up in our faith.

  47. So that whatever the challenges that come in this week.

  48. Whatever the joys we have.

  49. Whatever the lows we may experience.

  50. That you would be with us, Lord.

  51. And that we would know you as our God.

  52. As the one who never leaves or forsakes.

  53. The one who is a refuge and a strength for all our different needs.

  54. And so, Lord, we ask that you will, as you so often do, remind us of your great promises to us.

  55. As you so often do, remind us through your word who you are and all that you have done for us.

  56. Even as we have sung from this psalm, we are reminded of the great forgiveness that there is with you.

  57. That even in the midst of our forgetfulness, when we forget so much that you have done for us.

  58. When we forget that we depend on you for all things.

  59. That, Lord, you are gracious towards us.

  60. And that all your gracious benefits are there for us day after day.

  61. And so, may you give us that sense of thankfulness.

  62. That sense of rejoicing in you.

  63. That sense of coming anew each day.

  64. And receiving, Lord, your great mercies anew each day.

  65. And may you help us to fill our hearts with thankfulness even anew this night.

  66. That as we come to the close of a day.

  67. As we come to the close of your day.

  68. And as your word reminds us that the time moves on.

  69. The sun rises.

  70. The sun sets.

  71. The days move on.

  72. That we are reminded of your constant faithfulness.

  73. Your steadfast love that is unchanging.

  74. And we pray, Lord, that to be known as your word is proclaimed.

  75. Not just here, but through all the pulpits of our island here.

  76. And throughout your church, Lord, near and far.

  77. We thank you for your word that is proclaimed in so many different languages.

  78. To so many different people.

  79. All worshipping the one God.

  80. And we thank you that we join in with that worship this evening.

  81. That we are reminded, Lord, of what a taste of heaven would be.

  82. To know that we enter into praise with one another here.

  83. We enter into praise with your people near and far.

  84. We enter into praise with saints past and present.

  85. And we thank you, Lord, that that praise is at the very throne of heaven.

  86. That our praise is offered through that name above every name.

  87. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  88. And we thank you that in him we have reason to rejoice and to hope.

  89. That in him we have so much to give thanks for.

  90. And again, this evening as we open up your word, we pray that as we read and as we hear from it,

  91. that you will remind us of that wonder of just who you are.

  92. Even in these few words as we read of I am.

  93. That you are God.

  94. And that in Jesus we have God incarnate.

  95. We are the one who has come to draw near to us in all our needs.

  96. And Lord, we may we know your peace and your presence in that way.

  97. We do pray, Lord, for your people who journey in life and find themselves in so many different places and situations

  98. unexpectedly or through no choice of their own.

  99. We think of your persecuted people far and wide.

  100. Those who suffer for their faith.

  101. Those who are believers in Christ.

  102. Those who love the Lord with all their hearts.

  103. And yet for that, for that very simple faith that they might have.

  104. That they are persecuted and experience so much harshness in so many different ways.

  105. We do pray, Lord, that you will surround them.

  106. We thank you for your word that reminds us of how in wonderful ways you were with your people

  107. as they proclaimed you as their Lord.

  108. As we think of Daniel in the Old Testament or Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as they were cast into the fiery furnace.

  109. We think of all these experiences that your people have suffered down through so many generations.

  110. And yet the one God, the same God, who was near to them is there for all your people even this night

  111. to help in every experience and every challenge.

  112. And we know, Lord, that we need you in all of these different ways.

  113. There are many trials that will come our way.

  114. There is grief that comes into our life and sorrow.

  115. There are hardships in so many different ways.

  116. There is illness.

  117. As we hear so many around us, Lord, who are going through times of illness, both old and young.

  118. We think of those who may be on the very verge of eternity.

  119. Those who are laid aside in different ways at this time, Lord.

  120. Who are thankful for those who know you and have that great assurance that you are with them.

  121. That you will see them home.

  122. We pray for those who maybe have no thought of you.

  123. Those who are strangers to you.

  124. That your spirit will work.

  125. That your spirit will lead and draw people to know the comfort and the comforter.

  126. We ask these things, Lord, recognizing that you alone can do it.

  127. And so we plead with you, Lord, that you will remember us in mercy.

  128. We do pray, Lord, for our governments at this time.

  129. We think of situations near and far.

  130. We think of our own MP and MSP for our islands here.

  131. We pray for you to guide them and to uphold them.

  132. To give them your strength and above all, to give them a faith in you.

  133. To give them to know that you are their God.

  134. That any authority and perceived power that might be had in the hands of man in this world,

  135. it is all from above.

  136. We pray that for all our MPs and MSPs in Westminster and Holyrood,

  137. in our council buildings,

  138. and all who deal with us in so many different ways, making decisions for us.

  139. We pray for your blessing to be upon them.

  140. For you to minister in these places of power,

  141. to know your power, to know your greatness in their midst.

  142. We again think of situations throughout the world,

  143. situations that shock us and leave us just seeing the wickedness in this world.

  144. As we again remember America, a powerful nation in so many ways.

  145. But yet we see the fear and worries that are so often there.

  146. We think of the events of last evening.

  147. We just pray, Lord, for your peace, for your calm, for your spirit to work.

  148. We think of that for nations in turmoil,

  149. where there is war and terror, famine, natural disasters,

  150. where we see so much grief all around us.

  151. We pray, Lord, to have mercy,

  152. to heal, to heal the broken hearts,

  153. to heal the suffering,

  154. to heal the wickedness of man,

  155. to bring us to see ways of peace instead of war.

  156. We pray, Lord, that you will remember us then and do us good.

  157. Continue with us as a people here, Lord.

  158. Guide us by your mercy.

  159. Help us in all that we seek to do for you as a congregation.

  160. Help us as we open our doors to visitors into our town.

  161. We commit the breakfast next Sunday morning

  162. that will be open here for many who will be visiting our town.

  163. We pray to see people coming in through our doors,

  164. not just to receive physical food,

  165. but that there will be a word in season for them,

  166. that they would come and hear the gospel,

  167. that they would come and hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

  168. We pray your peace over our town in these coming days,

  169. in a busy week.

  170. As we see so many visitors coming, Lord,

  171. we ask your protection, your safety

  172. upon all who will be coming and going.

  173. We pray, Lord, all these things,

  174. acknowledging our need of you,

  175. acknowledging our weakness and frailties,

  176. but acknowledging the strength that you give

  177. and the grace that is always sufficient.

  178. May we know it more and more.

  179. So hear our prayers and continue with us now.

  180. Bless us and go before us as we ask all things

  181. through the forgiveness of our sins.

  182. In Jesus' name, amen.

  183. We're going to sing again to God's praise,

  184. this time in Psalm 34.

  185. The Sing Psalms version, page 40 of the psalm books.

  186. The tune is St. Stephen.

  187. Psalm 34.

  188. At the beginning of the psalm,

  189. we sing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  190. At all times I will bless the Lord.

  191. I'll praise him with my voice.

  192. Because I glory in the Lord,

  193. let troubled souls rejoice.

  194. Together let us praise the Lord,

  195. exalt his name with me.

  196. I sought the Lord.

  197. His answer came.

  198. From fear he set me free.

  199. We'll sing from verse 1 to 9 to God's praise.

  200. That's all.

  201. At all times I will bless the Lord.

  202. I'll praise him with my voice.

  203. Because I glory in the Lord,

  204. let troubled souls rejoice.

  205. Together let us praise the Lord,

  206. and exalt his name with me.

  207. I sought the Lord.

  208. His answer came.

  209. From fears he set me free.

  210. He'll lift the heavens and shine with joy.

  211. They are not good to shame.

  212. Lest suffering man cry to the Lord,

  213. from him deliverance came.

  214. The angel of the Lord,

  215. and guides continually.

  216. He sets his people free.

  217. In the midst of the Lord,

  218. O hear the Lord,

  219. who stays with me.

  220. You will not be oppressed.

  221. We're going to read God's word together now.

  222. Our first reading is in Exodus,

  223. and then we'll read in the Gospel of John.

  224. So we're first reading in Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  225. and we read from verse 1 to verse 15.

  226. Exodus chapter 3, I'm reading from verse 1.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  227. Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,

  228. the priest of Midian.

  229. And he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness

  230. and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

  231. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire

  232. out of the midst of a bush.

  233. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning,

  234. yet it was not consumed.

  235. And Moses said, I will turn aside to see this great sight,

  236. why the bush is not burned.

  237. When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see,

  238. God called to him out of the bush,

  239. Moses, Moses.

  240. And he said, Here I am.

  241. Then he said, Do not come near,

  242. or take off your sandals of your feet,

  243. for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.

  244. And he said, I am the God of your father,

  245. the God of Abraham,

  246. the God of Isaac,

  247. and the God of Jacob.

  248. And Moses hid his face,

  249. for he was afraid to look at God.

  250. Then the Lord said,

  251. I have surely seen the affliction of my people

  252. who are in Egypt,

  253. and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters.

  254. I know their sufferings,

  255. and I have come down to deliver them

  256. out of the hand of the Egyptians,

  257. and to bring them up out of that land

  258. to a good and broad land,

  259. a land flowing with milk and honey

  260. to the place of the Canaanites,

  261. the Hittites,

  262. the Amorites,

  263. the Perisites,

  264. the Hivites,

  265. and the Jebusites.

  266. And now, behold,

  267. the cry of the people of Israel has come to me,

  268. and I have also seen the oppression

  269. with which the Egyptians oppress them.

  270. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh,

  271. that you may bring my people,

  272. the children of Israel,

  273. out of Egypt.

  274. But Moses said to God,

  275. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh

  276. and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?

  277. He said,

  278. But I will be with you,

  279. and this shall be the sign for you

  280. that I have sent you.

  281. When you have brought the people out of Egypt,

  282. you shall serve God on this mountain.

  283. Then Moses said to God,

  284. If I come to the people of Israel

  285. and say to them,

  286. The God of your fathers has sent me to you,

  287. and they ask me,

  288. What is his name?

  289. What shall I say to them?

  290. God said to Moses,

  291. I am who I am.

  292. And he said,

  293. Say this to the people of Israel,

  294. I am has sent me to you.

  295. God also said to Moses,

  296. Say to the people of Israel,

  297. The Lord,

  298. the God of your fathers,

  299. the God of Abraham,

  300. the God of Isaac,

  301. and the God of Jacob

  302. has sent me to you.

  303. This is my name forever,

  304. and thus I am to be remembered

  305. throughout all generations.

  306. And we'll turn to the Gospel of John,

    John 6 chapter mention

  307. chapter 6.

  308. We're going to read a few verses there.

  309. John 6 from verse 16

  310. down to verse 21.

  311. This is just after the events

  312. of the feeding of the 5,000.

  313. As we take up our reading in verse 16,

  314. John 6 verse 16.

    John 6:16

  315. When evening came,

  316. his disciples went down to the sea,

  317. got into a boat,

  318. and started to cross the sea

  319. to Capernaum.

  320. It was now dark,

  321. and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  322. The sea became rough

  323. because a strong wind was blowing.

  324. When they had rowed

  325. about three or four miles,

  326. they saw Jesus walking on the sea

  327. and coming near the boat.

  328. And they were frightened.

  329. But he said to them,

  330. It is I.

  331. Do not be afraid.

  332. Then they were glad

  333. to take him into the boat.

  334. And immediately the boat

  335. was at the land

  336. to which they were going.

  337. And so on.

  338. Well, let's again sing

  339. to God's praise

  340. before we come back

  341. to the passage in John.

  342. We're going to sing

  343. in Psalm 99,

  344. in the Sing Psalms version,

  345. 99a.

  346. The tune is Peter's Ham,

  347. 99a,

  348. page 130 of the psalm books.

  349. We'll sing from verse 1

  350. to verse 7.

  351. The Lord reigns from his throne on high.

  352. Let all the nations quake.

  353. He sits between the cherubim,

  354. so let the whole earth shake.

  355. Great is the Lord on Zion Hill,

  356. exalted over all.

  357. Upon his great and holy name,

  358. let all the nations call.

  359. We'll sing from verse 1 to 7

  360. to God's praise.

  361. The Lord reigns from his throne

  362. on high.

  363. Let all the nations quake.

  364. He sits between the cherubim,

  365. so let the whole earth shake.

  366. Great is the Lord on Zion Hill,

  367. exalted over all.

  368. Upon his great and holy name,

  369. let all the nations call.

  370. The King of truth and equity,

  371. established by his might.

  372. In Jacob you have done for us

  373. all that is just and right.

  374. Exalt the Lord our God with us.

  375. Let all the world of God

  376. before his boots to worship him,

  377. for holy is the Lord.

  378. Moses and David and where his priests

  379. Samuel called on his name.

  380. They called upon the Lord their God,

  381. and he replied to them.

  382. He spoke to them and gave his law

  383. out of the cloud from heaven.

  384. They kept the stout to some degrees,

  385. where she to them had given.

  386. Let's turn back together to a reading

  387. in the Gospel of John,

    John 6 chapter mention

  388. chapter 6,

  389. and reading at verse 20.

  390. John, chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  391. and reading at verse 20.

  392. But he said to them,

  393. It is I, do not be afraid.

  394. It is I, do not be afraid.

  395. There have been many landmark moments

  396. in our history,

  397. in the history of this world.

  398. Big events that have a massive,

  399. a huge and lasting effect in our world.

  400. And we can think of them in different ways.

  401. We can think of, perhaps,

  402. things that have changed

  403. the way in which we live.

  404. Think of inventions, for example.

  405. Things that have come into being,

  406. that have been made life so much easier,

  407. that have transformed lives.

  408. The invention of the wheel.

  409. A wheel seems such a simple thing now,

  410. but how much we rely on it.

  411. The industrial revolution,

  412. how it changed the landscape of our land,

  413. and indeed the world.

  414. Telecommunication,

  415. how that came in,

  416. and how it opened up new avenues

  417. of communication all over the world.

  418. We think of transport,

  419. how aeroplanes just changed

  420. the way we live.

  421. The space race,

  422. how people ventured outside

  423. our own sphere of life

  424. here in this world,

  425. and travelled to different parts of space,

  426. to the moon,

  427. to different places.

  428. Things that would have seemed

  429. unimaginable at one point,

  430. but that have come into being.

  431. You think of the internet,

  432. and how that's transformed our lives,

  433. how we rely on it for so many things now,

  434. for good and for bad, unfortunately.

  435. We think even of how we're able

  436. to broadcast worship services

  437. to all ends of the earth.

  438. Things that 20 years ago

  439. would have seemed impossible.

  440. There are so many things

  441. that have happened,

  442. landmark moments in our history,

  443. and that they still impact

  444. the way we live

  445. in our day,

  446. and in our age.

  447. They are major events.

  448. They don't happen every day,

  449. but are they the main impacts

  450. that we should see in our lives?

  451. Are they the greatest landmark moments

  452. that our world has known?

  453. We are thinking of one of the greatest,

  454. if not the greatest,

  455. this morning,

  456. as we looked in Philippians,

  457. as we were thinking of Jesus,

  458. who did not consider equality with God

  459. a thing to be grasped,

  460. but made himself nothing,

  461. of how he came into this world,

  462. how he gave his life and obedience

  463. to death,

  464. even death on the cross.

  465. What a landmark moment

  466. in our history

  467. that Jesus came to die for sinners.

  468. We look at it this evening,

  469. we come to see a little more

  470. of what Jesus,

  471. of who he is.

  472. The greatest landmark moment

  473. in your experience,

  474. in my experience,

  475. should be to see

  476. and understand

  477. who Jesus is.

  478. Who is Jesus?

  479. How would you answer that question?

  480. Who is Jesus?

  481. You might think that as you read

  482. in the Bible,

  483. in the Gospels in particular,

  484. that everyone who met Jesus

  485. knew exactly who he was

  486. and knew immediately,

  487. but far from it.

  488. In the Gospel of John earlier,

  489. it says that he came to his own

  490. and his own received him not.

  491. They didn't want anything to do with him.

  492. They didn't know who he was.

  493. They didn't believe

  494. who he said he was.

  495. There were so many

  496. who saw him.

  497. They saw him doing miraculous things,

  498. and yet still,

  499. they didn't understand

  500. who he was.

  501. Do you know

  502. who Jesus is today?

  503. Do you know what he can do

  504. in your life

  505. and in your experience?

  506. There are many here

  507. who can say,

  508. yes,

  509. I've known Jesus.

  510. I've known his help.

  511. I've known his blessing.

  512. I've known his transforming power

  513. in my life,

  514. and yet still,

  515. we only know him in part.

  516. We only understand

  517. in part.

  518. You think even of

  519. those who were closest to Jesus

  520. as you read in the Gospels.

  521. The disciples,

  522. even they,

  523. didn't understand

  524. fully who Jesus was.

  525. Early on in the Gospel of Mark

  526. in chapter 4,

  527. there's another occasion

  528. where they're in a storm

  529. in a boat with Jesus,

  530. and they're fearful

  531. for their very lives,

  532. and they ask Jesus,

  533. do you not care

  534. that we are perishing?

  535. And Jesus gets up.

  536. He rebukes the wind

  537. and the waves,

  538. and they are still.

  539. And what do they say?

  540. Well, they say,

  541. who then is this

  542. that even the wind

  543. and the waves

  544. obey him?

  545. They just couldn't.

  546. understand who he was.

  547. We see so many things,

  548. and do we really

  549. understand who Jesus is?

  550. Later on in the Gospel of Mark

  551. in chapter 8,

  552. Jesus was having

  553. a conversation

  554. about who people

  555. were saying he was.

  556. Some were saying,

  557. Elijah or one of the prophets,

  558. but he turned to them

  559. and he said to them,

  560. but what about you?

  561. Who do you say that I am?

  562. And Peter answered,

  563. you are the Christ.

  564. Did he understand?

  565. Did he fully understand

  566. what he was saying?

  567. Probably not at that point.

  568. He didn't fully understand.

  569. And even we can use Jesus

  570. on our lips

  571. and our prayers

  572. and our worship,

  573. and do we fully understand

  574. who he is

  575. and what he can do for us?

  576. In both our readings

  577. this evening in Exodus

  578. and here in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  579. we see landmark moments.

  580. Landmark moment,

  581. a moment for Moses,

  582. hearing God speaking to him,

  583. reminding that he has not

  584. forgotten his people,

  585. that he is about to do

  586. a great work of salvation

  587. for them.

  588. And what does he say

  589. to him

  590. when he asks that question,

  591. who will I say

  592. has sent me?

  593. I am.

  594. Two words.

  595. It seems to make no sense.

  596. I am.

  597. And yet what power

  598. there is in these words.

  599. And we're reading here

  600. in Gospel of John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  601. Again, it's a landmark moment

  602. for the disciples.

  603. There is this realization

  604. almost of who he is.

  605. He declares in verse 20

  606. as they are so afraid.

  607. It says there in English,

  608. it is I.

  609. Do not be afraid.

  610. But it is I

  611. is actually I am.

  612. These two words,

  613. I am.

  614. Do not be afraid.

  615. The same words

  616. that Moses heard

  617. in the book of Exodus.

  618. These two words

  619. are powerful.

  620. We are hearing of

  621. the great Redeemer.

  622. We are hearing of

  623. the great God

  624. who is able to save.

  625. He is with us.

  626. The people were looking

  627. for a Savior then,

  628. just as so many

  629. are looking for a Savior,

  630. for someone to help today.

  631. You think of earlier

  632. in John's Gospel

  633. in chapter 4.

  634. When Jesus met

  635. with the woman

  636. at the well,

  637. the woman said to him,

  638. I know that Messiah

  639. is coming

  640. who is called Christ.

  641. When he comes,

  642. he will tell us

  643. all things.

  644. And what did Jesus

  645. say to her

  646. to comfort her,

  647. to assure her?

  648. He said,

  649. I who speak to you

  650. am here.

  651. He was there.

  652. He was there

  653. with the disciples

  654. as he came to them

  655. walking on the water.

  656. I am was with them.

  657. And that is a great assurance

  658. that we have this evening.

  659. That as we look

  660. to and trust in him,

  661. he says,

  662. don't be afraid.

  663. I am.

  664. And do we need

  665. to hear these words

  666. ourselves?

  667. when we think

  668. of the lives

  669. in which we live,

  670. when we think

  671. of all that goes on

  672. in our hearts,

  673. when we think

  674. of all that concerns

  675. us and troubles us,

  676. things that make us

  677. afraid,

  678. do we not need

  679. to hear these words?

  680. I am.

  681. Do not be

  682. afraid.

  683. He is here.

  684. And when we know

  685. Jesus,

  686. maybe not in

  687. his fullness,

  688. but when we know

  689. him more and more,

  690. we understand

  691. more about him,

  692. we see just what

  693. he is able to do

  694. for us,

  695. who he is

  696. and what he is

  697. able to do

  698. for us.

  699. And in these

  700. two passages

  701. so closely connected

  702. in Exodus and John,

  703. I just want to think

  704. of three things

  705. this evening

  706. that these words

  707. give to us.

  708. I am.

  709. Do not be

  710. afraid.

  711. It gives us

  712. first hope.

  713. Then it eases

  714. our fears.

  715. And then thirdly,

  716. it answers

  717. our doubts.

  718. So the first

  719. thing we want to

  720. see is it gives

  721. us hope.

  722. He is

  723. here.

  724. In both

  725. our readings,

  726. we see something

  727. miraculous happen.

  728. With Moses,

  729. there was

  730. the burning bush

  731. that was not

  732. consumed.

  733. This bush,

  734. it caught his

  735. attention,

  736. it made him

  737. turn towards it

  738. because there was

  739. something unique

  740. about it.

  741. A burning bush

  742. would have not

  743. been unique

  744. in and of

  745. itself in a

  746. hot desert

  747. and a hot

  748. climate.

  749. But the bush

  750. that went on

  751. fire would be

  752. consumed.

  753. But not this

  754. one.

  755. It was not

  756. consumed.

  757. There was

  758. something about

  759. it.

  760. There was

  761. something miraculous

  762. about it.

  763. And here in

  764. the Gospel of

  765. John,

  766. what we see

  767. is Jesus

  768. coming to

  769. the disciples

  770. walking on

  771. the sea.

  772. in verse

  773. 19,

  774. Jesus walking

  775. on the sea

  776. and coming

  777. near the

  778. boat.

  779. It's not

  780. normal.

  781. It shouldn't

  782. happen.

  783. There's something

  784. miraculous here.

  785. But is our

  786. focus on the

  787. miracle or

  788. the one

  789. behind it?

  790. You see,

  791. the purpose

  792. in both

  793. was not to

  794. show something

  795. miraculous

  796. in the sense

  797. of the bush

  798. not burning

  799. or Jesus

  800. just walking

  801. on water.

  802. The greatest

  803. emphasis behind

  804. it was

  805. making himself

  806. known.

  807. Showing

  808. himself.

  809. His identity

  810. to Moses

  811. and to the

  812. disciples.

  813. That they

  814. would see

  815. more of

  816. who he

  817. was.

  818. And what

  819. it means

  820. to have

  821. this God

  822. with us.

  823. It gives

  824. us hope.

  825. it reminds

  826. us that

  827. he is

  828. here.

  829. As Jesus

  830. says there

  831. in verse

  832. 20,

  833. he sees

  834. that they

  835. were frightened

  836. in verse

  837. 19,

  838. at the end

  839. of verse

  840. 19,

  841. but he

  842. says,

  843. I am,

  844. it is I,

  845. do not

  846. be afraid.

  847. It's about

  848. the one

  849. who was

  850. there.

  851. Not the

  852. miracle itself,

  853. but the one

  854. who was there

  855. because who

  856. is it that

  857. has come

  858. to them?

  859. Yes,

  860. we say

  861. Jesus came

  862. walking on

  863. water,

  864. but in

  865. what he

  866. says to

  867. them,

  868. in these

  869. two words,

  870. I am,

  871. do not

  872. be afraid.

  873. He is

  874. saying more,

  875. he is

  876. saying God

  877. is here

  878. with you.

  879. God of

  880. heaven,

  881. God of

  882. earth,

  883. our maker,

  884. and the

  885. maker of

  886. the whole

  887. universe,

  888. he is

  889. here,

  890. do not

  891. be afraid.

  892. For only

  893. God can

  894. go beyond

  895. the realm

  896. of what

  897. is possible

  898. to the

  899. impossible.

  900. I am

  901. is here.

  902. The same

  903. as what

  904. Moses

  905. experienced

  906. in that

  907. burning

  908. bush as

  909. he turned

  910. towards the

  911. burning

  912. bush,

  913. and he

  914. asked that

  915. question,

  916. if I come

  917. to the

  918. people of

  919. Israel and

  920. say to

  921. them,

  922. the God

  923. of our

  924. fathers

  925. has sent

  926. me to

  927. you,

  928. and they

  929. ask me,

  930. what is

  931. his name,

  932. what shall

  933. I say

  934. to them?

  935. God said

  936. to Moses,

  937. I am

  938. who I

  939. am,

  940. and he

  941. said,

  942. say to

  943. this

  944. people of

  945. Israel,

  946. I am

  947. sent me

  948. to you.

  949. What

  950. assurance

  951. there is

  952. given in

  953. these words.

  954. He is

  955. here,

  956. he is

  957. with us,

  958. and the

  959. children of

  960. Israel would

  961. have been

  962. thinking as

  963. they were,

  964. God has

  965. forgotten

  966. us,

  967. he has

  968. left us

  969. in this

  970. land,

  971. in Egypt,

  972. to suffer,

  973. to die,

  974. but I

  975. am has

  976. not

  977. forgotten.

  978. And as

  979. the disciples

  980. are in

  981. this boat

  982. once again,

  983. as they

  984. see Jesus

  985. walking,

  986. their fear

  987. is helped

  988. by the

  989. words,

  990. I am.

  991. It is

  992. God.

  993. And do

  994. you have

  995. that assurance

  996. today?

  997. Do you

  998. have that

  999. comfort

  1000. today?

  1001. That in

  1002. everything that

  1003. you face,

  1004. that I

  1005. am is

  1006. here.

  1007. That that

  1008. is the

  1009. one that

  1010. you are

  1011. looking to.

  1012. That that

  1013. is the

  1014. one who is

  1015. saying,

  1016. do not

  1017. be afraid,

  1018. it is

  1019. I.

  1020. One of the

  1021. most common

  1022. crimes

  1023. today is

  1024. identity

  1025. theft.

  1026. Maybe you've

  1027. been a part

  1028. of it.

  1029. Maybe someone

  1030. has stolen

  1031. your identity.

  1032. In some

  1033. ways it

  1034. can be

  1035. quite

  1036. just an

  1037. inconvenience.

  1038. Someone

  1039. clones you

  1040. on Facebook.

  1041. Someone's

  1042. copied your

  1043. profile.

  1044. It's more

  1045. of an

  1046. inconvenience.

  1047. But in

  1048. other ways

  1049. it can be

  1050. more serious.

  1051. Your identity

  1052. is taken

  1053. and used

  1054. and it

  1055. makes you

  1056. lose money.

  1057. It means

  1058. that you

  1059. maybe have

  1060. credit cards

  1061. in your name

  1062. that you

  1063. don't even

  1064. know about

  1065. and people

  1066. steal from

  1067. you in

  1068. that way.

  1069. It's a

  1070. serious thing

  1071. and we're

  1072. always encouraged

  1073. to guard

  1074. our passwords,

  1075. to guard

  1076. everything

  1077. about us.

  1078. There is

  1079. that side

  1080. of identity

  1081. theft.

  1082. But what

  1083. about a

  1084. greater crime

  1085. committed in

  1086. terms of

  1087. identity theft

  1088. where we

  1089. have tried

  1090. to take

  1091. the identity

  1092. of God

  1093. for ourselves.

  1094. To steal

  1095. away from

  1096. God who

  1097. he is

  1098. and make

  1099. a God

  1100. that suits

  1101. ourselves.

  1102. Taking

  1103. his authority,

  1104. taking his

  1105. power,

  1106. taking his

  1107. ability

  1108. and just

  1109. putting it

  1110. into ourselves

  1111. and what

  1112. we can do.

  1113. We're making

  1114. God

  1115. something

  1116. small,

  1117. something

  1118. he's not

  1119. because we

  1120. don't see

  1121. who he

  1122. is.

  1123. We don't

  1124. see him

  1125. as the

  1126. I am.

  1127. the God

  1128. of the

  1129. whole

  1130. universe.

  1131. We don't

  1132. see him

  1133. in what

  1134. he can

  1135. do.

  1136. And so

  1137. we're

  1138. stealing

  1139. his

  1140. identity.

  1141. We're

  1142. stealing

  1143. his

  1144. identity

  1145. when we

  1146. think of

  1147. what we

  1148. do with

  1149. Jesus

  1150. if we're

  1151. not

  1152. trusting

  1153. in him

  1154. and his

  1155. finished

  1156. work.

  1157. That he

  1158. has

  1159. taken

  1160. our

  1161. sins,

  1162. that he

  1163. has humbled

  1164. himself,

  1165. that he

  1166. has taken

  1167. death on

  1168. the cross

  1169. for us.

  1170. And we

  1171. say,

  1172. but there

  1173. must be

  1174. something I

  1175. can do

  1176. to save

  1177. myself.

  1178. Jesus

  1179. can't be

  1180. the only

  1181. answer.

  1182. We're

  1183. taking that

  1184. identity to

  1185. ourselves,

  1186. an identity

  1187. that's not

  1188. ours.

  1189. We need

  1190. to see

  1191. who he

  1192. is,

  1193. that he

  1194. is here.

  1195. And who

  1196. he is,

  1197. he is the

  1198. I am.

  1199. we

  1200. won't

  1201. know

  1202. his

  1203. hope,

  1204. we won't

  1205. know his

  1206. power,

  1207. we won't

  1208. know his

  1209. reality while

  1210. we are

  1211. making him

  1212. into something

  1213. that he's

  1214. not.

  1215. We're

  1216. taking away

  1217. from the

  1218. fact that

  1219. it is

  1220. him,

  1221. I am,

  1222. and not

  1223. giving him

  1224. the glory

  1225. that he

  1226. is due.

  1227. It is

  1228. I,

  1229. do not

  1230. be afraid.

  1231. Not it

  1232. is me,

  1233. not someone

  1234. else,

  1235. it is

  1236. I.

  1237. He gives

  1238. us hope.

  1239. That's the

  1240. first thing

  1241. we see

  1242. because he

  1243. is here.

  1244. The second

  1245. thing he

  1246. does here

  1247. is he

  1248. eases

  1249. our fears.

  1250. And what

  1251. we see

  1252. here is

  1253. that he

  1254. speaks.

  1255. In both

  1256. our readings

  1257. what we

  1258. see is

  1259. the great

  1260. I am,

  1261. he eases

  1262. the fears

  1263. of Moses

  1264. and his

  1265. disciples.

  1266. The disciples

  1267. in John 6.

  1268. And how

  1269. does he do

  1270. it?

  1271. How does

  1272. he ease

  1273. their fears?

  1274. Well,

  1275. the great

  1276. assurance

  1277. is not

  1278. what they

  1279. see,

  1280. but what

  1281. they hear.

  1282. He speaks.

  1283. He speaks

  1284. to them.

  1285. And it

  1286. is these

  1287. words that

  1288. are just

  1289. so powerful.

  1290. It is

  1291. I do

  1292. not be

  1293. afraid.

  1294. Just a

  1295. few words.

  1296. I am

  1297. do not

  1298. be

  1299. afraid.

  1300. but what's

  1301. behind that

  1302. is

  1303. recognizing.

  1304. Recognizing

  1305. who it

  1306. is.

  1307. Because you

  1308. see in

  1309. verse 21

  1310. it says

  1311. then they

  1312. were glad

  1313. to take

  1314. him into

  1315. the boat.

  1316. They knew

  1317. who it

  1318. was at

  1319. these words.

  1320. Moses

  1321. was glad

  1322. when he

  1323. heard who

  1324. it was.

  1325. I am

  1326. and the

  1327. assurance

  1328. that he

  1329. was giving

  1330. to him.

  1331. Do you

  1332. ever get

  1333. a phone

  1334. call?

  1335. And you

  1336. lift up

  1337. the phone

  1338. or you

  1339. listen to

  1340. an answer

  1341. a message

  1342. left on

  1343. the phone

  1344. and the

  1345. person who

  1346. is at

  1347. the other

  1348. end just

  1349. says

  1350. it is

  1351. me.

  1352. How do

  1353. you know

  1354. who it

  1355. is?

  1356. There are

  1357. some times

  1358. when I

  1359. just I

  1360. don't know.

  1361. I don't

  1362. know.

  1363. I don't

  1364. recognize the

  1365. voice so

  1366. it is not

  1367. enough to

  1368. say it is

  1369. me.

  1370. I need

  1371. more.

  1372. But if

  1373. you

  1374. recognize

  1375. the

  1376. voice,

  1377. if you

  1378. know the

  1379. voice and

  1380. the person

  1381. who says

  1382. it is

  1383. me,

  1384. you know

  1385. exactly

  1386. who it

  1387. is.

  1388. And that

  1389. leads us

  1390. here to

  1391. think about

  1392. do we

  1393. know this

  1394. God who

  1395. is speaking?

  1396. Moses

  1397. did.

  1398. The

  1399. disciples

  1400. here did.

  1401. But do

  1402. we know

  1403. this voice?

  1404. Do we

  1405. understand

  1406. who it

  1407. is saying

  1408. who is

  1409. speaking to

  1410. us here

  1411. when he

  1412. says it

  1413. is I

  1414. do not

  1415. be afraid.

  1416. I am

  1417. do not

  1418. be afraid.

  1419. Do we

  1420. understand

  1421. who it

  1422. is?

  1423. In both

  1424. these

  1425. situations

  1426. for Moses

  1427. and for

  1428. the disciples

  1429. here in

  1430. John,

  1431. they were

  1432. afraid.

  1433. But what

  1434. gave them

  1435. comfort and

  1436. assurance was

  1437. the one who

  1438. was speaking.

  1439. And is

  1440. that the

  1441. case for

  1442. you and

  1443. I

  1444. tonight?

  1445. As we

  1446. hear the

  1447. word of

  1448. God, do

  1449. we know

  1450. who is

  1451. speaking?

  1452. Do we

  1453. understand who

  1454. it is that

  1455. is speaking

  1456. to us

  1457. here?

  1458. It is not

  1459. me.

  1460. It is not

  1461. me who is

  1462. speaking to

  1463. you through

  1464. this.

  1465. It is the

  1466. Lord.

  1467. It is I.

  1468. Do not

  1469. be afraid.

  1470. Is there

  1471. any greater

  1472. comfort that

  1473. we can

  1474. have than

  1475. these

  1476. words?

  1477. To know

  1478. that God

  1479. himself is

  1480. speaking.

  1481. That God

  1482. himself is

  1483. giving comfort.

  1484. That God

  1485. himself is

  1486. giving assurance.

  1487. Don't be

  1488. afraid.

  1489. I am.

  1490. The

  1491. presence

  1492. of God.

  1493. Do we

  1494. know it?

  1495. Have you

  1496. ever experienced

  1497. that sense?

  1498. God is

  1499. here.

  1500. And God

  1501. is speaking.

  1502. There are

  1503. moments in

  1504. our experience,

  1505. I'm sure,

  1506. every Christian

  1507. will have had

  1508. it at some

  1509. point.

  1510. Not all

  1511. the time.

  1512. But in

  1513. certain

  1514. moments,

  1515. you're just

  1516. aware,

  1517. God is

  1518. here.

  1519. It's a

  1520. power.

  1521. There's

  1522. something about

  1523. it that you

  1524. just cannot

  1525. put into

  1526. words.

  1527. That

  1528. experience

  1529. that he

  1530. is here.

  1531. That

  1532. experience

  1533. that no

  1534. doubt

  1535. Moses

  1536. and the

  1537. disciples

  1538. here in

  1539. John were

  1540. experiencing

  1541. for

  1542. themselves

  1543. as they

  1544. heard

  1545. these

  1546. words,

  1547. I am.

  1548. The

  1549. very

  1550. voice

  1551. of God

  1552. speaking

  1553. to

  1554. them.

  1555. You

  1556. see it

  1557. through

  1558. scripture.

  1559. You

  1560. see it

  1561. in

  1562. moments.

  1563. In

  1564. the

  1565. Old

  1566. Testament

  1567. you

  1568. have

  1569. Joshua

  1570. who

  1571. was

  1572. taking

  1573. over

  1574. from

  1575. Moses

  1576. later

  1577. on.

  1578. And

  1579. he

  1580. was

  1581. afraid.

  1582. And

  1583. what

  1584. gave

  1585. him

  1586. peace

  1587. was

  1588. the

  1589. presence

  1590. of

  1591. God.

  1592. God

  1593. said to

  1594. Joshua,

  1595. have I

  1596. not

  1597. commanded

  1598. you be

  1599. strong

  1600. and

  1601. courageous?

  1602. Do

  1603. not be

  1604. frightened,

  1605. do not

  1606. be

  1607. dismayed,

  1608. for the

  1609. Lord your

  1610. God is

  1611. with you

  1612. wherever

  1613. you go.

  1614. Isn't

  1615. there a

  1616. power in

  1617. that

  1618. presence?

  1619. When

  1620. you're

  1621. afraid of

  1622. what lies

  1623. ahead,

  1624. when you're

  1625. not sure,

  1626. when you're

  1627. anxious,

  1628. when you're

  1629. worried,

  1630. but you

  1631. know God

  1632. is with

  1633. you.

  1634. You

  1635. know God

  1636. is there.

  1637. And

  1638. there is

  1639. a

  1640. power.

  1641. But do

  1642. we see

  1643. the value

  1644. in the

  1645. one who

  1646. is speaking

  1647. to us?

  1648. Do we

  1649. see his

  1650. worth?

  1651. Do we

  1652. understand

  1653. who it

  1654. is that

  1655. was with

  1656. us?

  1657. There's a

  1658. story of

  1659. an American

  1660. man who

  1661. was clearing

  1662. out his

  1663. loft.

  1664. And he

  1665. came across

  1666. a gold

  1667. coin.

  1668. He

  1669. couldn't

  1670. remember

  1671. where it

  1672. had come

  1673. from,

  1674. but he

  1675. found it

  1676. and he

  1677. was quite

  1678. impressed.

  1679. It was

  1680. a

  1681. beautiful,

  1682. well-conditioned

  1683. coin.

  1684. Not

  1685. knowing much

  1686. more about

  1687. it,

  1688. he decided

  1689. what he

  1690. would do

  1691. was just

  1692. put it

  1693. in a

  1694. frame and

  1695. hang it

  1696. on his

  1697. wall.

  1698. A few

  1699. months later,

  1700. a friend

  1701. came to

  1702. visit him.

  1703. And as

  1704. he was

  1705. walking into

  1706. the house,

  1707. he noticed

  1708. this coin

  1709. on the

  1710. wall and

  1711. went to

  1712. have a

  1713. closer look

  1714. and he

  1715. gasped.

  1716. He was

  1717. stunned to

  1718. see this

  1719. coin because

  1720. he knew a

  1721. little bit

  1722. about coins.

  1723. And he

  1724. said,

  1725. where did

  1726. you find

  1727. this?

  1728. Where did

  1729. you get

  1730. this?

  1731. And he

  1732. said,

  1733. I just

  1734. found it

  1735. in my

  1736. loft.

  1737. And then

  1738. the man

  1739. asked him,

  1740. do you

  1741. know what

  1742. this is

  1743. worth?

  1744. I'm not

  1745. sure.

  1746. Maybe a

  1747. few hundred

  1748. dollars,

  1749. maybe a

  1750. thousand

  1751. dollars.

  1752. He says,

  1753. oh no,

  1754. this is

  1755. worth much

  1756. more.

  1757. This is

  1758. worth around

  1759. two hundred,

  1760. two hundred

  1761. and fifty

  1762. thousand

  1763. dollars.

  1764. And the

  1765. man was

  1766. gobsmacked

  1767. that he had

  1768. this thing

  1769. of value

  1770. in his

  1771. house that

  1772. he didn't

  1773. realize.

  1774. we have

  1775. something

  1776. much more

  1777. worth,

  1778. of much

  1779. more worth

  1780. for

  1781. ourselves.

  1782. And you

  1783. think of

  1784. God

  1785. speaking to

  1786. us.

  1787. how many

  1788. of you

  1789. have a

  1790. verse of

  1791. scripture

  1792. hanging on

  1793. the wall

  1794. at home?

  1795. Perhaps you

  1796. walk past

  1797. it every

  1798. day.

  1799. Perhaps you

  1800. know it

  1801. off by

  1802. heart.

  1803. But do

  1804. you realize

  1805. its value?

  1806. Or are you

  1807. like that

  1808. man walking

  1809. past the

  1810. coin every

  1811. day until

  1812. he understood

  1813. its worth,

  1814. not realizing

  1815. the value

  1816. that was

  1817. there?

  1818. Are we

  1819. like that

  1820. with the

  1821. word of

  1822. God?

  1823. We have

  1824. it maybe

  1825. hanging on

  1826. a version

  1827. of the

  1828. house or

  1829. we have

  1830. our

  1831. Bibles

  1832. in our

  1833. homes and

  1834. yet we

  1835. don't see

  1836. the value.

  1837. We don't

  1838. understand the

  1839. worth of

  1840. what it's

  1841. saying to

  1842. us, of

  1843. the promises,

  1844. the assurances,

  1845. the comforts

  1846. that there are

  1847. there for us.

  1848. When we look

  1849. everywhere else

  1850. apart from

  1851. the word,

  1852. our greatest

  1853. comfort, our

  1854. greatest assurance

  1855. is here

  1856. before us.

  1857. As he said

  1858. to the

  1859. disciples,

  1860. I am,

  1861. do not

  1862. be afraid.

  1863. They had

  1864. to hear

  1865. the voice,

  1866. they had

  1867. to recognize

  1868. the voice

  1869. and who

  1870. it was

  1871. that was

  1872. speaking.

  1873. May we

  1874. hear and

  1875. recognize the

  1876. voice of

  1877. I am,

  1878. the I

  1879. am who

  1880. says,

  1881. do not

  1882. be afraid,

  1883. put your

  1884. trust in

  1885. me.

  1886. me.

  1887. The third

  1888. thing and

  1889. the final

  1890. thing we

  1891. see here

  1892. is how

  1893. he answers

  1894. our doubts,

  1895. how he

  1896. gives

  1897. reassurance

  1898. to both

  1899. Moses and

  1900. the disciples.

  1901. All their

  1902. fears,

  1903. all their

  1904. doubts

  1905. are answered.

  1906. And that's

  1907. what God

  1908. does for

  1909. us.

  1910. When you

  1911. think of the

  1912. experience of

  1913. both Moses

  1914. in the

  1915. Old

  1916. Testament

  1917. and the

  1918. disciples

  1919. in the

  1920. New,

  1921. not in

  1922. these exact

  1923. moments but

  1924. as they

  1925. went forward

  1926. from here,

  1927. do you not

  1928. think they

  1929. would have

  1930. come back

  1931. to these

  1932. moments and

  1933. reminded

  1934. themselves of

  1935. who spoke?

  1936. Moses was

  1937. afraid to

  1938. take the

  1939. children of

  1940. Israel out

  1941. of Egypt.

  1942. But God

  1943. had said,

  1944. I am.

  1945. I am has

  1946. sent you.

  1947. I am is

  1948. with you.

  1949. And so he

  1950. would go

  1951. on in the

  1952. journey of

  1953. taking the

  1954. children of

  1955. Israel out

  1956. of Egypt

  1957. and to

  1958. the edge

  1959. of the

  1960. promised

  1961. land,

  1962. always knowing

  1963. that experience

  1964. of I am

  1965. with them.

  1966. Making the

  1967. way plain,

  1968. taking all

  1969. the challenges,

  1970. feeding them,

  1971. opening up the

  1972. Red Sea,

  1973. protecting them,

  1974. guiding them

  1975. all the way.

  1976. He was there

  1977. for them.

  1978. There are

  1979. many other

  1980. moments in

  1981. the Old

  1982. Testament that

  1983. you can look

  1984. at and see

  1985. fearful

  1986. situations that

  1987. were landmark

  1988. moments for

  1989. God's people.

  1990. Think of

  1991. Noah.

  1992. How would

  1993. he have

  1994. felt building

  1995. an ark when

  1996. there was no

  1997. sign of

  1998. water?

  1999. How inadequate,

  2000. how stupid

  2001. in many ways.

  2002. Yet I am

  2003. was with him.

  2004. David must

  2005. have felt

  2006. pretty small

  2007. looking up to

  2008. Goliath,

  2009. the giant.

  2010. man,

  2011. yet I am

  2012. was with

  2013. him.

  2014. The three

  2015. Hebrews,

  2016. Shadrach,

  2017. Meshach,

  2018. and Abednego,

  2019. as they were

  2020. about to be

  2021. put into the

  2022. fiery furnace,

  2023. there would

  2024. have been no

  2025. hope for

  2026. them.

  2027. How inadequate

  2028. they would have

  2029. seen against

  2030. the fiery

  2031. furnace.

  2032. But I am

  2033. was with

  2034. them.

  2035. Daniel

  2036. must look

  2037. pretty pathetic

  2038. beside the

  2039. lion's den

  2040. as he was

  2041. about to be

  2042. thrown in.

  2043. But who

  2044. was with

  2045. him?

  2046. I am.

  2047. And so

  2048. it goes

  2049. on.

  2050. There are

  2051. always doubts

  2052. and fears

  2053. and worries

  2054. and anxieties

  2055. and yet I

  2056. am

  2057. Yeshua.

  2058. He gives

  2059. us so many

  2060. promises

  2061. in his

  2062. word.

  2063. And as we

  2064. think ourselves

  2065. of going

  2066. forward,

  2067. as we think

  2068. ourselves of

  2069. a service

  2070. to God,

  2071. we think

  2072. of the

  2073. disciples

  2074. here.

  2075. I am.

  2076. Do not

  2077. be afraid.

  2078. And they

  2079. would go

  2080. on to

  2081. serve the

  2082. Lord in

  2083. so many

  2084. ways.

  2085. Many of

  2086. them gave

  2087. their lives

  2088. in serving

  2089. the Lord.

  2090. But they

  2091. were still

  2092. assured of

  2093. I am

  2094. with them.

  2095. And we

  2096. are never

  2097. without that

  2098. God as

  2099. we look

  2100. to him.

  2101. In these

  2102. two words,

  2103. we are

  2104. reminded of

  2105. his power.

  2106. We are

  2107. reminded of

  2108. his presence.

  2109. We are

  2110. reminded of

  2111. all that

  2112. he can

  2113. do for

  2114. us.

  2115. We need

  2116. him.

  2117. We need

  2118. him every

  2119. moment of

  2120. our lives.

  2121. But these

  2122. words assure

  2123. us there's

  2124. not a

  2125. situation.

  2126. you will

  2127. ever find

  2128. yourself

  2129. where God

  2130. doesn't

  2131. keep you.

  2132. Where God

  2133. is always

  2134. there.

  2135. I am.

  2136. Do not

  2137. be afraid.

  2138. He is the

  2139. one who

  2140. is able

  2141. and he is

  2142. the one

  2143. who enables

  2144. in all

  2145. that we

  2146. do.

  2147. But the

  2148. question so

  2149. often is,

  2150. do we

  2151. know who

  2152. it is?

  2153. Do we

  2154. see I

  2155. am?

  2156. Do we

  2157. hear I

  2158. am?

  2159. Does he

  2160. help you?

  2161. Does he

  2162. comfort you?

  2163. Does he

  2164. assure you?

  2165. Praise

  2166. God he

  2167. does.

  2168. There are

  2169. times when

  2170. we can

  2171. have our

  2172. doubts.

  2173. There are

  2174. times when

  2175. we have

  2176. our fears.

  2177. But that's

  2178. nothing new

  2179. for the

  2180. Christian.

  2181. There was

  2182. a man

  2183. called

  2184. George

  2185. Campbell

  2186. Morgan,

  2187. a famous

  2188. preacher.

  2189. He preached

  2190. his first

  2191. sermon when

  2192. he was

  2193. aged 13.

  2194. And by

  2195. the age

  2196. of 19

  2197. he had

  2198. preached

  2199. many times.

  2200. He was

  2201. becoming

  2202. well-known

  2203. as a

  2204. preacher,

  2205. an evangelistic

  2206. preacher.

  2207. But then

  2208. for a

  2209. number of

  2210. months,

  2211. he had

  2212. his doubts.

  2213. He had

  2214. his fears.

  2215. He started

  2216. hearing various

  2217. scientists and

  2218. atheists and

  2219. agnostics

  2220. debating and

  2221. discussing the

  2222. things of

  2223. God and

  2224. putting doubts

  2225. into people's

  2226. minds.

  2227. things.

  2228. And he

  2229. decided this

  2230. day, in

  2231. his fears

  2232. and his

  2233. worries, that

  2234. he had to

  2235. come near

  2236. to God.

  2237. So what

  2238. did he do?

  2239. He bought

  2240. himself a

  2241. new Bible.

  2242. Not that he

  2243. didn't have a

  2244. Bible, he

  2245. did, but he

  2246. wanted a new

  2247. Bible.

  2248. And so that he

  2249. could start

  2250. looking at the

  2251. Word of God

  2252. almost anew,

  2253. almost afresh,

  2254. with no notes

  2255. or marks on

  2256. the pages,

  2257. but just to

  2258. go through

  2259. the Scriptures.

  2260. And what he

  2261. said afterwards

  2262. was this.

  2263. He said the

  2264. result was

  2265. this.

  2266. The Bible

  2267. found me.

  2268. He turned

  2269. to the

  2270. Word of

  2271. God in

  2272. all his

  2273. doubts, in

  2274. all that he

  2275. was hearing

  2276. at a young

  2277. age and

  2278. then he

  2279. went on to

  2280. serve God

  2281. with all

  2282. his heart.

  2283. The Bible

  2284. found him.

  2285. I am

  2286. was there.

  2287. And you

  2288. know we

  2289. have the

  2290. Bible before

  2291. us.

  2292. We have the

  2293. Word of

  2294. God before

  2295. us.

  2296. Do we

  2297. understand the

  2298. power that

  2299. there is?

  2300. Do we

  2301. understand God?

  2302. I am.

  2303. Do we

  2304. understand Jesus?

  2305. Do we

  2306. understand what

  2307. he has done?

  2308. Do we

  2309. understand the

  2310. Holy Spirit?

  2311. And how the

  2312. Spirit leads us

  2313. closer to this

  2314. great I am.

  2315. May we be

  2316. helped by God

  2317. to seek his

  2318. Word, to

  2319. know his

  2320. presence, to

  2321. find the hope

  2322. that there is

  2323. here, that

  2324. eases our

  2325. fears, to

  2326. see the way

  2327. that he

  2328. speaks, that

  2329. he speaks to

  2330. us in power.

  2331. It is I.

  2332. Do not be

  2333. afraid, and

  2334. that he

  2335. answers our

  2336. doubts, and

  2337. gives us that

  2338. reassurance that

  2339. he is with

  2340. us.

  2341. We all have

  2342. fears and

  2343. worries, but

  2344. we have the

  2345. Word of

  2346. God.

  2347. We have

  2348. God himself,

  2349. and we

  2350. have I am

  2351. saying, do

  2352. not be

  2353. afraid.

  2354. Let us

  2355. pray.

  2356. Our

  2357. Father in

  2358. heaven, may

  2359. we know the

  2360. wonder of

  2361. the power of

  2362. your Word.

  2363. May we know

  2364. it finding us

  2365. even in our

  2366. hearts this

  2367. night.

  2368. May we

  2369. understand the

  2370. one who is

  2371. speaking to

  2372. us.

  2373. May we hear

  2374. that voice

  2375. that calls.

  2376. It is I,

  2377. I am.

  2378. Do not be

  2379. afraid.

  2380. May you

  2381. help us to

  2382. find our

  2383. comfort and

  2384. our reassurance

  2385. in you at

  2386. all times and

  2387. in all ways,

  2388. as we ask it

  2389. all in Jesus'

  2390. name.

  2391. Amen.

  2392. We are

  2393. going to

  2394. conclude by

  2395. singing to

  2396. God's

  2397. praise in

  2398. Psalm 36.

  2399. The

  2400. Sing

  2401. Psalms

  2402. version,

  2403. Psalm 36,

  2404. in page

  2405. 44,

  2406. we will

  2407. sing from

  2408. verse 5

  2409. to verse

  2410. 7.

  2411. These

  2412. wonderful

  2413. words remind

  2414. us of the

  2415. great steadfast

  2416. love that is

  2417. so great from

  2418. the Lord.

  2419. Your steadfast

  2420. love is

  2421. great, O

  2422. Lord, it

  2423. reaches heaven

  2424. high.

  2425. Your

  2426. faithfulness is

  2427. wonderful,

  2428. extending to

  2429. the sky.

  2430. Your

  2431. righteousness is

  2432. very great,

  2433. like mountains

  2434. high and

  2435. steep.

  2436. Your

  2437. justice is

  2438. like ocean

  2439. depths, both

  2440. man and

  2441. beast.

  2442. You keep.

  2443. We'll sing

  2444. from verse

  2445. 5 to 7

  2446. and the

  2447. tune of

  2448. Strapiting.

  2449. Thank you.

  2450. Thank you.

  2451. Thank you.

  2452. Thank you.

  2453. Thank you.

  2454. Thank you.

  2455. Amen.

  2456. Amen.

  2457. Amen.

  2458. Amen.

2459. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right. We'll close with a benediction.

2460. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore. Amen.
