  1. There's a further notice about the vacancy. Our congregation has recently been made vacant, so I'll just read through that notice on the sheet.

  2. The Kirk session met on Monday the 15th of July and agreed to follow the practice previously adopted during a vacancy by taking on the role of the vacancy committee.

  3. The purpose of the vacancy committee is to arrange for the pulpit to be supplied with ministers who are considered suitable to fill the vacancy, but the final choice belongs to our communicant membership.

  4. The vacancy committee would like to stress that they are seeking to secure the full scope of congregational interest so that the process of contacting ministers and arranging dates for them to preach can begin.

  5. The initial meeting of the vacancy committee is scheduled for Monday the 26th of August, and over the next five weeks, as we pray to the Lord for guidance,

  6. the elders would like to encourage everyone in the congregation to speak to their own elder or to any of the elders and inform them of who you would like to be invited to preach in Stornoway.

  7. Please bear in mind that certain procedural steps are required, namely the completion of a financial schedule as well as a congregational development plan.

  8. It is hoped that both of these items will be presented to the congregation in September before being sent to the Presbytery and the Mission Board for approval.

  9. That's something for us all to pray over.

  10. Let us begin our time of worship by singing together in Psalm 40 of the Blue Praise Book in the Scottish Psalter version.

  11. We have a Blue Praise Book available at the door if you don't have one.

  12. Psalm 40 in the Scottish Psalter version.

  13. You'll find that on page 259.

  14. And we'll sing from verse 1 down to verse 5 and note that verse 5 follows over the turn of the page.

  15. The words there are,

  16. We'll stand to sing these words to God's praise down to the end of verse Mark 5.

  17. I waited for the Lord my God and patiently did bear.

  18. I waited for the Lord my God and patiently did bear.

  19. And then to me,

  20. He did apply my voice and kind to hear.

  21. Just fruitfully did.

  22. Forgive me from the fear for this,

  23. And from the mighty pain.

  24. And on our own He set my feet.

  25. Establishing my way

  26. He put a new song in my life

  27. For God to magnify

  28. Then he shall see it

  29. And shall feel

  30. And God the Lord rely

  31. O blessed is the man

  32. Whose trust upon the Lord relies

  33. Respect him not the proud

  34. For such a stern aside to life

  35. O Lord my God to many are

  36. The wonders of the strong

  37. Thy gracious thoughts

  38. To us work from above

  39. O hosts are gone

  40. The northern unkind

  41. Reck on them

  42. To the effective way

  43. And speak of them

  44. I will

  45. The more I can

  46. Be number

  47. The more I can

  48. Be number

  49. God

  50. We'll now join our hearts together for a word of prayer.

  51. Our heavenly Father we give thanks to you for this day.

  52. We give thanks to you for this opportunity to come before you.

  53. That we can return our thanks to you for all that you have done for us.

  54. That we can come and read your word.

  55. That we can sing your praises.

  56. That we can come to you in prayer.

  57. And you are a God that will hear us when we pray.

  58. Even if we feel like we are in the depths and in the fearful pit like the psalmist.

  59. You are a God that can draw near to us.

  60. And put a new song in our heart.

  61. And turn our lives around.

  62. That we may come and joyfully sing praise to you.

  63. For you have saved us from death.

  64. You have redeemed us because Jesus Christ has died on the cross for each and every one of us.

  65. And Lord we just pray this time for the young in our congregation.

  66. We pray for those that are on holiday.

  67. We pray that you would give them a time of enjoyment.

  68. We pray for those that have gone to camp.

  69. And we ask that you would be mindful of them in their worries that they might have.

  70. But that they would be supported and encouraged by those that are there.

  71. And that they would understand something new about Jesus and God.

  72. And that they may have seeds sown in their hearts at a young age.

  73. That you may bring them to grow.

  74. And bring forth much fruit.

  75. We pray for our planned holiday club.

  76. We pray that you would go before us in all our plans.

  77. And again as we seek to join together to have fun and to learn more about God.

  78. We pray that you would bless us in our time together.

  79. We remember our Sunday school in a time of break.

  80. We remember our school teachers also.

  81. That you would be with them.

  82. Be with those who teach our children in our schools.

  83. That they may point them in the direction that God has set out for us.

  84. That God has revealed to us in the Bible.

  85. That we should follow Jesus.

  86. And that he will provide for us.

  87. So be with us Lord as we turn towards your word.

  88. Give us minds of understanding.

  89. And ears to hear what you shall say to us.

  90. And all these we ask in Jesus name.

  91. Amen.

  92. Now I want to say a word to the younger ones that are here with us this morning.

  93. And I want you all to imagine an orchestra.

  94. Orchestras consisted usually of lots of different people in lots of different things.

  95. But they are all trying to play music together.

  96. And they all have a bit of paper in front of them.

  97. That tells them the music that they are playing.

  98. The tunes that they are meant to play.

  99. And while they have the music in front of them.

  100. They are also looking towards the conductor.

  101. They are following that man.

  102. They are keeping an eye on that man that is in front of them as well.

  103. And it consists of lots of different people playing lots of different instruments.

  104. You may have the violinists.

  105. They are a group of violinists.

  106. And they might be playing very fast.

  107. They might be getting very tired having to play hard.

  108. And the conductor is telling them to play and play and play.

  109. And then there might be someone at the side with trumpets just coming in and out.

  110. When they are told.

  111. And then someone with that trombone making a totally different noise.

  112. Just every now and again.

  113. And you might have someone at the very back.

  114. Just standing there and waiting.

  115. Till the very end.

  116. To make a big crash with the cymbals.

  117. And that's not the way that the violinist looks around to everyone else.

  118. And says I am working very hard here.

  119. And this man with the trumpets just putting me off.

  120. And this man with the trombone is making a totally different noise to the noise that I am making.

  121. And that guy at the back.

  122. He is not doing anything.

  123. But when the conductor instructs everyone to do everything at the right time.

  124. To play the different tunes at the right time.

  125. It all comes together.

  126. To make a wonderful sound.

  127. People come and listen to orchestras.

  128. Play amazing music.

  129. But the most important thing is that they follow the music.

  130. And they follow the conductor.

  131. And it's a lot like that in our own lives.

  132. We are all different.

  133. And we have all got different jobs.

  134. The Lord will give us different jobs to do in our life.

  135. We have different purposes.

  136. But it's not that we look at everyone else.

  137. And say.

  138. Well he is not doing what I am doing.

  139. And he is playing a different tune to me.

  140. Something totally different.

  141. And look at that guy.

  142. He is not doing anything.

  143. We are not to look at others.

  144. We are not to judge others.

  145. The most important thing for us in our lives.

  146. Is that we follow the instructions that are set out for us in the Bible.

  147. Almost like the Bible is like the piece of music that is set in front of you.

  148. We follow what is in the Bible.

  149. And as we read the Bible.

  150. As we get to know the Bible.

  151. And learn about the Bible.

  152. We will see Jesus.

  153. And we will see the man that is directing us every step in our lives.

  154. And when we follow the Bible.

  155. And when we follow the Bible.

  156. When we listen to Jesus.

  157. Something wonderful will happen.

  158. We will give praise to him and glory.

  159. And it is something that is so special to God.

  160. And yes we are all different.

  161. And yes we have all different jobs to do.

  162. But that is not to say that we do our own thing.

  163. It is not to say that we come with our own piece of music.

  164. And go into the orchestra.

  165. It would ruin it.

  166. If we just decided to do what we wanted to do.

  167. In our lives.

  168. The best thing for us.

  169. Is to follow the Bible.

  170. And to follow Jesus.

  171. So I pray that as we grow up.

  172. Even as we grow old.

  173. We continue.

  174. To follow Jesus.

  175. And to look at him.

  176. I pray that will be blessed.

  177. To each of you.

  178. We will now say the Lord's Prayer together.

  179. You will find it at the top of the bulletin sheet.

  180. Let us join together in saying these words.

  181. Our Father which art in heaven.

  182. Hallowed be thy name.

  183. Thy kingdom come.

  184. Thy will be done on earth.

  185. As it is in heaven.

  186. Give us this day our daily bread.

  187. And forgive us our debts.

  188. As we forgive our debtors.

  189. And lead us not into temptation.

  190. But deliver us from evil.

  191. For thine is the kingdom.

  192. The power and the glory.

  193. Forever.

  194. Amen.

  195. We will now continue in our praise.

  196. And we will now sing our Gaelic item of praise.

  197. Which you will find over leaf.

  198. On the rear page of the bulletin sheet.

  199. The words of Psalm 23 in English.

  200. The Lord's my shepherd.

  201. I'll not want.

  202. He makes me down to lie.

  203. In pastures green.

  204. He leadeth me.

  205. The quiet waters by.

  206. In Gaelic it is here.

  207. In Gaelic it is here.

  208. Is the Gia feen.

  209. Is the Bucheel go.

  210. Chabimi aon in ni.

  211. We will remain seated for this singing.

  212. The Gaelic presenter will read the line out as we go through the psalm.

  213. And the congregation repeat the line as we go.

  214. Years ago.

  215. They wouldn't have had the words.

  216. Wouldn't be able to.

  217. The Bibles and psalm books weren't there for everyone to have.

  218. So this is the way that they sung their praises.

  219. The presenter would read the line.

  220. And the people would then repeat the words back.

  221. So.

  222. We'll sing this together.

  223. often singing jatsung..

  224. Propag format...

  225. Blue。

  226. Oh, my God.

  227. Oh, my God.

  228. Oh, my God.

  229. Oh, my God.

  230. Oh, my God.

  231. The Gospel of John, chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  232. Gospel of John, New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

  233. Read at verse 4, chapter 14 at verse 15.

  234. We have two readings this morning.

  235. We'll turn to chapter 20 after reading section in chapter 14.

  236. Gospel of John, chapter 14, reading at verse 15.

    John 14 chapter mention

  237. And this is Jesus' words before he was led away to be crucified.

  238. He's speaking to his disciples and instructing them.

  239. He says there,

  240. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more.

  241. But you will see me because I live.

  242. In that day, you will know that I am in the Father, and you in me, and I in you.

  243. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, it's he it is who loves me.

  244. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

  245. Judas, not Iscariot, said to him, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?

  246. Jesus answered him, if anyone loves me, he will keep my word.

  247. And my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

  248. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.

  249. And the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father who sent me.

  250. These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.

  251. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

  252. he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  253. Peace I leave with you.

  254. My peace I give to you.

  255. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

  256. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  257. Neither let them be afraid.

  258. You heard me say to you, I am going away, and I will come to you.

  259. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father.

  260. For the Father is greater than I.

  261. And now I have told you before it takes place,

  262. so that when it does take place, you may believe.

  263. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming.

  264. He has no claim on me.

  265. But I do as the Father has commanded me,

  266. so that the world may know that I love the Father.

  267. Rise, let us go from here.

  268. If you turn a few pages to chapter 20,

  269. chapter 20, and we'll read from verse 19.

  270. This is the account where Jesus appears after his death,

  271. resurrected to the disciples.

  272. Verse 19.

  273. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week,

  274. the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,

  275. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,

  276. Peace be with you.

  277. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

  278. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

  279. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you.

  280. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.

  281. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,

  282. Receive the Holy Spirit.

  283. If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven.

  284. If you withhold the forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.

  285. Amen.

  286. May the reading of God's word be blessed to those who have heard it.

  287. Let us join together once again in a word of prayer.

  288. Let us pray.

  289. Our Heavenly Father, we give thanks for this word that we have read.

  290. And we give thanks that you are the Lord Jesus Christ who brings peace to his people.

  291. And we just give thanks that you are one who has come to set us free from the power of death.

  292. Help us to be mindful of what we do when we come to worship you.

  293. When we come before the presence of God and seek his face.

  294. That we may hear from you.

  295. And although it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Lord God Almighty.

  296. We pray that we may draw before you with our reverence and our fear.

  297. Acknowledging you as creator of all things.

  298. The one who sustains all things and keeps our very life.

  299. And Lord, we pray as we come to this word.

  300. And consider it.

  301. We pray that you would give us understanding of it.

  302. That you may speak to us.

  303. We pray that the gospel may go forth with power by the power of the Spirit.

  304. For we acknowledge that if we do it of our own strength, it will come to nothing.

  305. So we rely on you, Lord God.

  306. And the presence of the Spirit to be with us as we come to you before your word and before you.

  307. That you may guide us and show us and instruct us.

  308. And how we are to live our lives.

  309. Lord, we pray for our nation.

  310. We pray for our world.

  311. We pray that the gospel may go out with power.

  312. That it may persuade and enable people to receive and embrace Jesus Christ that is offered to them.

  313. The Christ that went to the cross for them.

  314. To die for them.

  315. In order that we may not be found guilty before God.

  316. That we may come before God knowing that our sins have been forgiven.

  317. Confident in the blood of Jesus Christ as the sacrifice to pay for our sins.

  318. All is done.

  319. We can do nothing of ourselves.

  320. We trust in Jesus Christ.

  321. To whom else can we go?

  322. Who else offers that peace when death is set before us?

  323. You have promised us life if we believe in you.

  324. And so help us in our unbelief.

  325. Help us in this hour to understand who you are and to trust in you.

  326. We pray for everyone that preaches your word this morning.

  327. Across our world and nation.

  328. That it may go forth with great effect.

  329. We remember those people who have devoted their lives to you and your cause.

  330. Who are missionaries in this world.

  331. We remember Muriel from her congregation in Cambodia.

  332. We pray for the work that she does with the Brow and Grung people.

  333. And the girls that stay with her.

  334. Lord, we pray that you would give her strength.

  335. And enable her to speak about her Saviour.

  336. And the change that has come about in her life.

  337. Lord, we pray for those who are worried this morning.

  338. Those who are fears.

  339. Those who have uncertainties.

  340. Those who are anxious over their health.

  341. Those who mourn.

  342. We pray that you would draw near to them.

  343. And comfort them.

  344. Lord, we just ask that you would be with us in our time together.

  345. That the gospel of Jesus Christ may take root in our hearts.

  346. And grow each and every day.

  347. Be with us.

  348. Guide us.

  349. Keep us.

  350. Keep the evil one from distracting us.

  351. And let us see Jesus Christ.

  352. With beauty and wonder and awe.

  353. All this we ask in Jesus' name.

  354. Amen.

  355. We'll continue in our praise by singing in Psalm 56.

  356. You'll find that on page 73 in the Sing Psalms version.

  357. Psalm 56.

  358. I have it marked as verse mark 5.

  359. But I think we'll begin our singing from verse mark 9.

  360. At the bottom of the page.

  361. When I call on you to help me.

  362. Then my foes will turn aside.

  363. This is how I will be certain.

  364. That God is on my side.

  365. O relief.

  366. In the Lord whose word I honour.

  367. In my God I praise his word.

  368. I will trust and not be fearful.

  369. What can man do to me, Lord?

  370. I have taken vows before you.

  371. To my God I will be true.

  372. Sacrifices of thanksgiving.

  373. I will gladly give to you.

  374. For you kept my feet from stumbling.

  375. And from death you set me free.

  376. So that I may walk before you.

  377. And the light of life may see.

  378. From verse 9.

  379. We'll stand to sing.

  380. When I call on you to help me.

  381. Then my foes will turn aside.

  382. Amen.

  383. When I call on you to help me.

  384. Then my foes will turn aside.

  385. This is how I will be certain.

  386. That my own is on my side.

  387. When the Lord whose word I own.

  388. Then my God I praise his word.

  389. I will trust and not be fearful.

  390. What can man do to me, Lord?

  391. I will trust and not be fearful.

  392. I will trust and not be fearful.

  393. I will trust and not be fearful.

  394. To my God I will be true.

  395. Sacrifices of thanksgiving.

  396. I will gladly give to you.

  397. For you kept my feet from stumbling.

  398. And from death you set me free.

  399. So that I may walk before you.

  400. And the light of life may see.

  401. We turn back to the passage that we read in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  402. I want us to consider this passage that we have with Jesus.

  403. This resurrected body appears to the disciples.

  404. And there in verse 21.

  405. You'll see what Jesus says to them.

  406. Peace be with you.

  407. As the Father has sent me.

  408. Even so I am sending you.

  409. Now the last time I was with you here in Stornoway.

  410. We looked at the first resurrection appearance of Jesus.

  411. That was the appearance that he made to Mary.

  412. And we're walking our way through the resurrection appearances that are recorded in the Gospel of John.

  413. We thought about Mary.

  414. We thought about the love that she had for Jesus.

  415. We thought about the love that she had lost as she came mourning over the loss of Jesus Christ.

  416. But Jesus appeared to her there at the tomb of the bombshell moment of his first appearance.

  417. And the love that she had lost had now been restored.

  418. Because Jesus had conquered death.

  419. Jesus had not died.

  420. Jesus would live forever.

  421. Her love would ever be present.

  422. All her sorrows had been turned to joy in that account.

  423. And Jesus' appearances after death form the foundations of the Christian faith.

  424. And gives everyone who believes in him a hope in life after death.

  425. The Bible says that though ye die, yet ye shall live.

  426. And now we come to this second appearance in the Gospel of John.

  427. We're on the same day still.

  428. Mary has been at the tomb in the morning in the early hours just at sunrise.

  429. And now we are told there in verse 19 that it's now the evening.

  430. And he appears to the gathered disciples within this locked room.

  431. But what John doesn't record is another account which Luke does.

  432. Jesus walked with the two on the road to Emmaus between sunrise and the evening hours.

  433. Now John doesn't record this.

  434. And it's an interesting account.

  435. We've got to ask, well, why doesn't John record it?

  436. Why doesn't John record that fascinating account?

  437. But John himself says, at the end of chapter 20 there, no, at the end of chapter 21 he says,

  438. I can't record everything.

  439. Supposing everything was to be written,

  440. The whole world could not contain the books about Jesus.

  441. So John here, when he puts his Gospel together, he's selective to record these accounts for a certain reason.

  442. And I hope that as we come and consider why and the importance of it,

  443. we'll understand the purpose of why John wrote this book.

  444. The purpose is there at the end of chapter 20.

  445. He writes all of this for the reader.

  446. The reader this morning.

  447. For you and for me.

  448. That we may believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  449. Because as we'll see in the evening,

  450. these men also doubted that Jesus could ever live.

  451. They're amazed at what happens.

  452. And so there's nothing else like it in this world.

  453. They record all this in detail.

  454. So that everyone who hears it may believe.

  455. So let us consider this passage together.

  456. And I want you to think in your life that you know fine that you can't do everything.

  457. You can't do everything yourself.

  458. And often you need to, if you have a job to do,

  459. you need to delegate the task to someone else.

  460. So if you think about a business, the boss can't do everything.

  461. And usually he'll give the simpler tasks to other people.

  462. And he'll hold on to the more vital aspects of the business himself.

  463. But supposing you were that manager, you were that boss,

  464. and the time came where maybe you had to retire.

  465. Maybe you had to hand over the reins to someone else.

  466. Someone else had to come and fill your boots.

  467. You'd look for the most competent person you could find.

  468. The most knowledgeable person on the subject.

  469. The most person who had the most experience.

  470. The person who was most trustworthy.

  471. The most reliable person you had in the company or out with the company.

  472. Someone that would fill your boots and ensure that the business would run smoothly.

  473. Best person you could find.

  474. And in this account here, we've got a handover going on.

  475. Jesus has died.

  476. He cannot stay in this world.

  477. He started a work.

  478. But he must return to be on the side of his Father in heaven.

  479. He's handing the work over to the disciples.

  480. And they must be people that go out boldly into this world,

  481. facing all opposition and criticism,

  482. to declare that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Saviour of sinners.

  483. He is the man that can give you hope in the face of death.

  484. They need to be bold, men and women.

  485. But who does he have?

  486. When you look at the passage here, who does he have?

  487. He's got people who are scared, confused,

  488. people who are inexperienced for the job that is required of them.

  489. These disciples, when you read through the Gospels,

  490. they've already proven themselves to be unreliable,

  491. lacking in knowledge,

  492. not at all competent to do the task that has been asked of them here.

  493. But this is who Jesus has.

  494. And if this was your business that you were handing over to people like this,

  495. you would be thinking,

  496. this isn't going to work.

  497. What chance do I have?

  498. It's going to be a mess.

  499. And you would expect the work of Jesus to stop.

  500. Because the people here aren't really top notch.

  501. But strangely, the work continued.

  502. And it's continued even up till this morning.

  503. With similar men and women.

  504. So, the work is not entirely reliant upon the men and women and their own strength.

  505. Surely there's something more going on here

  506. for the work to have continued throughout the ages till this morning.

  507. And when you continue reading through the Gospels,

  508. when you continue reading through Acts,

  509. and the works that these disciples went on to do,

  510. the leaders of the day complained against these men.

  511. Because they said,

  512. they're turning the world upside down

  513. with the message that they're bringing.

  514. These people who were in this locked room,

  515. their lives being turned upside down

  516. by meeting Jesus.

  517. They go out boldly.

  518. And this appearance,

  519. I believe, is a preparation

  520. for the work that he has for them to do.

  521. And the disciples receive three things

  522. from Jesus here in this passage.

  523. And the first thing

  524. that they receive from Jesus is peace.

  525. The disciples are gathered in this locked room

  526. and Jesus comes into their presence

  527. and he says,

  528. peace be with you at the end of verse 19.

  529. And I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall

  530. in that locked room

  531. to weigh up and to evaluate

  532. and to watch these disciples

  533. considering what's going on.

  534. They're scared of what's going to happen.

  535. But Mary's come from the morning

  536. and she's reported that

  537. I have seen the Lord Jesus.

  538. Maybe the two from the road to Emmaus

  539. have now returned and said to them,

  540. we've seen Jesus too.

  541. And they're probably weighing it all up

  542. and asking,

  543. what's happened?

  544. Where's Jesus' body gone?

  545. Has Jesus risen?

  546. We'll have more of the questions

  547. that they asked this evening

  548. when we consider Thomas.

  549. But here the disciples,

  550. they're all locked in.

  551. And they're locked in for fear.

  552. And it's a fear of death.

  553. Because what would happen is

  554. when the Romans condemned someone to die,

  555. when they condemned a movement,

  556. they would seek after,

  557. well, the leader first.

  558. But then all the followers

  559. that were associated

  560. with that man

  561. that had been condemned,

  562. they'd try and obliterate them.

  563. So that movement

  564. would no longer cause

  565. any issues amongst the people.

  566. And the Jews

  567. weren't exactly their best friends either.

  568. The Jews did not like

  569. what Jesus had been teaching.

  570. So if they had seen

  571. any of the disciples

  572. out and about,

  573. they would have been straight

  574. reporting them

  575. as followers of Jesus Christ,

  576. that they would be captured

  577. and silenced.

  578. So you can see straight away

  579. that there is absolutely

  580. no peace in this camp.

  581. They are fearful for their lives.

  582. They're locked in a room.

  583. It highlights their fear

  584. that they're locked in.

  585. It highlights something

  586. of the body of Jesus.

  587. And the body,

  588. the appearance that he comes in,

  589. the physical attributes of Jesus,

  590. that he can just appear.

  591. We don't really have time

  592. to go into that this morning.

  593. But he appears

  594. out of nowhere

  595. to people that are already

  596. scared for their lives.

  597. Which is quite interesting.

  598. And it's interesting to note

  599. that it doesn't record any fear,

  600. any extra fear on their part.

  601. they're joyful

  602. to see the man

  603. that comes in peace.

  604. If you remember that count,

  605. Jesus was taken away

  606. to be crucified.

  607. The soldiers came

  608. to capture Jesus before.

  609. And where did the disciples go?

  610. They ran away.

  611. They were scared

  612. of the soldiers.

  613. They were scared

  614. that they would die too.

  615. Jesus was captured.

  616. And Jesus doesn't mention this,

  617. that you abandoned me.

  618. Where were you

  619. when the soldiers came for me?

  620. He doesn't mention that.

  621. But they didn't want to die.

  622. The disciples didn't want to die.

  623. They had a fear

  624. of dying at that moment.

  625. Jesus comes with peace.

  626. Peace be with you,

  627. he says.

  628. Peace.

  629. A peace that is not like

  630. any other peace in this world

  631. that we read in John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  632. He brings peace

  633. when things are terrifying.

  634. Peace in the midst

  635. of absolute fear

  636. when their world is upside down.

  637. And in many ways

  638. the world is upside down today.

  639. And I believe the world

  640. is looking for peace.

  641. We all want to have peace.

  642. We all want peace.

  643. It's almost like

  644. we're programmed

  645. for peace.

  646. We try to make

  647. our own peace.

  648. But there's always something

  649. that will come across

  650. and spoil it.

  651. Jesus is here

  652. saying that he brings

  653. peace

  654. in the midst

  655. of fear.

  656. His presence

  657. brings peace.

  658. And you can maybe imagine

  659. when you were a little

  660. boy or girl

  661. and something

  662. had happened to you.

  663. You were fearful

  664. of something.

  665. You were scared

  666. of something.

  667. You had a nightmare.

  668. Your parent would come in

  669. and their presence

  670. would bring you peace.

  671. Maybe you've started

  672. working

  673. and you're learning

  674. your trade

  675. and you make

  676. a complete blunder

  677. and you're fearful

  678. of the outcome.

  679. What's going to happen?

  680. And someone more experienced

  681. comes in

  682. and says,

  683. it's okay.

  684. We can fix it.

  685. That person's presence

  686. brings peace to you.

  687. Jesus brings peace

  688. to them

  689. because he knows

  690. what to do.

  691. And it's a peace

  692. not like this world.

  693. Jesus is called

  694. the Prince of Peace

  695. elsewhere in the Bible.

  696. And that is something

  697. that the Christian,

  698. the believer,

  699. receives.

  700. They have a certain

  701. and special peace

  702. in life.

  703. Maybe you've seen it

  704. in action.

  705. Maybe you've seen

  706. a Christian

  707. go through

  708. the most horrendous

  709. experience

  710. and you wonder,

  711. well,

  712. how on earth

  713. can they have

  714. so much peace

  715. in the midst

  716. of something

  717. so terrifying,

  718. fearful?

  719. The Christian

  720. has peace

  721. in life,

  722. but also the Christian

  723. receives peace

  724. in death.

  725. They have peace

  726. knowing

  727. that Jesus

  728. has conquered

  729. death

  730. for them.

  731. they have a special

  732. and certain peace

  733. through their life

  734. because they know

  735. that although they die,

  736. Jesus

  737. has provided

  738. for them

  739. and prepared

  740. for them

  741. a place

  742. for them

  743. to be.

  744. He has made

  745. peace

  746. for this

  747. disciple.

  748. Jesus Christ

  749. has made peace

  750. for you.

  751. Peace

  752. for the one

  753. who is scared.

  754. Peace

  755. for the one

  756. who is full

  757. of fears

  758. in this life.

  759. Peace

  760. for the one

  761. whose life

  762. is upside down.

  763. Peace

  764. for the one

  765. who feels

  766. like locking

  767. themselves

  768. away from

  769. the world.

  770. Peace

  771. for the one

  772. who fears

  773. death.

  774. Jesus

  775. brings

  776. peace.

  777. It's a great

  778. treasure to have

  779. peace in your life.

  780. But Jesus

  781. also brings

  782. something else

  783. to the disciples

  784. here and he brings

  785. a purpose

  786. to them.

  787. The second

  788. point.

  789. He brings

  790. peace

  791. and he brings

  792. purpose to

  793. them too.

  794. Now you

  795. know in

  796. your life

  797. if you don't

  798. have a purpose

  799. you feel

  800. a bit lost

  801. and when

  802. you think

  803. you have

  804. no purpose

  805. in this

  806. life

  807. you yourself

  808. can feel

  809. as someone

  810. having

  811. no purpose

  812. which can

  813. have sad

  814. consequences.

  815. Having

  816. purpose

  817. is personally

  818. a huge

  819. thing.

  820. Have you

  821. ever asked

  822. why am

  823. I here?

  824. What is

  825. my purpose?

  826. And a

  827. group of

  828. godly men

  829. knew the

  830. value of

  831. people knowing

  832. their purpose

  833. when they

  834. wrote the

  835. small book

  836. the shorter

  837. catechism

  838. that taught

  839. people about

  840. God.

  841. The first

  842. question that

  843. they had

  844. there posed

  845. was what

  846. is man's

  847. purpose?

  848. What is

  849. the chief

  850. end of

  851. man?

  852. Is the

  853. way it

  854. was written.

  855. They knew

  856. the value

  857. of it.

  858. They put

  859. it first

  860. and the

  861. purpose of

  862. man is to

  863. glorify God

  864. and enjoy

  865. him forever.

  866. In our

  867. passage here

  868. Jesus comes

  869. to the

  870. disciples and

  871. he gives

  872. them a new

  873. purpose.

  874. They would

  875. go and

  876. glorify

  877. God.

  878. They would

  879. go out

  880. with the

  881. gospel.

  882. Jesus

  883. says to

  884. them peace

  885. be with

  886. you again

  887. in verse

  888. 21.

  889. It's

  890. repeated

  891. because he's

  892. got something

  893. really important

  894. to say to

  895. them.

  896. He's saying

  897. as the

  898. father has

  899. sent me

  900. so I

  901. am sending

  902. you.

  903. This is

  904. the hand

  905. over.

  906. They are

  907. going to

  908. carry on

  909. the work

  910. that God

  911. sent Jesus

  912. to do.

  913. And in

  914. many ways

  915. they could

  916. not.

  917. they

  918. wouldn't

  919. do the

  920. work of

  921. Christ in

  922. the sense

  923. of redeeming

  924. people and

  925. forgiving

  926. sins.

  927. But the

  928. first thing

  929. that Jesus

  930. did when

  931. he came

  932. into this

  933. world,

  934. you can

  935. read about

  936. in the

  937. gospel of

  938. Mark,

  939. is that

  940. he came

  941. and proclaimed

  942. the gospel

  943. of God.

  944. Calling

  945. people to

  946. repent and

  947. believe in

  948. the gospel.

  949. And that

  950. is what the

  951. disciples are

  952. now being

  953. instructed to

  954. do.

  955. Go out

  956. with the

  957. gospel of

  958. Jesus

  959. Christ and

  960. call them

  961. to believe

  962. in him.

  963. That they

  964. may have

  965. life.

  966. The man

  967. that died

  968. on the

  969. cross for

  970. you and

  971. for your

  972. sins.

  973. So that

  974. you may be

  975. set free

  976. from eternal

  977. punishment in

  978. hell and be

  979. received into

  980. heaven and to

  981. be with

  982. Christ forever

  983. to the

  984. eternal

  985. enjoyment.

  986. He died

  987. for you.

  988. These men

  989. in this

  990. account went

  991. out completely

  992. changed after

  993. they saw the

  994. risen Lord

  995. Jesus.

  996. Their purpose

  997. in life had

  998. changed.

  999. They went

  1000. out even

  1001. if it meant

  1002. facing a

  1003. brutal death

  1004. death, which

  1005. it did for

  1006. most of

  1007. them.

  1008. They had a

  1009. new purpose

  1010. in life to

  1011. fulfill and

  1012. their lives

  1013. were turned

  1014. upside down

  1015. by seeing

  1016. this man.

  1017. It's kind

  1018. of proof in

  1019. a sense that

  1020. Jesus did

  1021. appear to

  1022. them.

  1023. They were

  1024. so scared

  1025. to die in

  1026. the first

  1027. instance and

  1028. now they're

  1029. going out

  1030. boldly as

  1031. completely

  1032. different

  1033. people.

  1034. With the

  1035. gospel message

  1036. with confidence

  1037. and even

  1038. if they die

  1039. they know

  1040. they shall

  1041. live.

  1042. And I'm

  1043. sure they

  1044. said of

  1045. themselves

  1046. well I

  1047. can't do

  1048. it.

  1049. I'm not

  1050. the man

  1051. for the

  1052. job.

  1053. But this

  1054. is the

  1055. Christian

  1056. church of

  1057. the day.

  1058. This

  1059. small number

  1060. is the

  1061. Christian

  1062. church.

  1063. church, the

  1064. few that

  1065. are gathered

  1066. in this

  1067. locked room

  1068. they feel

  1069. so weak,

  1070. they're asking

  1071. what's going

  1072. on, they've

  1073. isolated

  1074. themselves,

  1075. they've lost

  1076. all courage.

  1077. The church

  1078. should never

  1079. lock themselves

  1080. away from

  1081. the world.

  1082. We have a

  1083. purpose to

  1084. go out with

  1085. the gospel of

  1086. Jesus Christ.

  1087. The Lord is a

  1088. work for

  1089. everyone and

  1090. it's a different

  1091. work as we

  1092. were saying to

  1093. the children.

  1094. Doesn't mean

  1095. that we'll all

  1096. stand and

  1097. preach, doesn't

  1098. mean that we

  1099. go out and

  1100. put the

  1101. Bible down

  1102. people's

  1103. throats, but

  1104. at very least

  1105. it means that

  1106. we live

  1107. Christ-like

  1108. lives.

  1109. We live

  1110. like Christ

  1111. lived in

  1112. this world and

  1113. continue his

  1114. work in that

  1115. way, if

  1116. nothing else.

  1117. We forgive

  1118. others.

  1119. We give,

  1120. we help

  1121. those who

  1122. are poor,

  1123. we love

  1124. one another,

  1125. we love

  1126. our neighbours,

  1127. we talk to

  1128. those who

  1129. are despised,

  1130. we do not

  1131. judge one

  1132. another.

  1133. We imitate

  1134. Christ as

  1135. Paul saw

  1136. to do.

  1137. God has

  1138. his purpose

  1139. for everyone.

  1140. And the

  1141. funny thing

  1142. is that when

  1143. you come to

  1144. believe in

  1145. this man,

  1146. you've got

  1147. your own

  1148. purpose for

  1149. your life

  1150. already sorted.

  1151. But when

  1152. you meet

  1153. with Jesus

  1154. and you

  1155. believe in

  1156. Jesus Christ,

  1157. he puts a

  1158. new purpose

  1159. in your

  1160. life.

  1161. And the

  1162. things that

  1163. you thought

  1164. you'd never

  1165. do, you

  1166. may well

  1167. end up

  1168. doing.

  1169. Because you

  1170. are fulfilling

  1171. his purpose

  1172. for his

  1173. glory.

  1174. You

  1175. yourself have

  1176. a new

  1177. purpose in

  1178. this life.

  1179. It is

  1180. his purpose.

  1181. And the

  1182. peace that

  1183. we have is

  1184. his peace.

  1185. And the

  1186. last thing I

  1187. want to say

  1188. to you today

  1189. is that

  1190. these disciples

  1191. received power

  1192. as well

  1193. when they

  1194. met with

  1195. Jesus

  1196. Christ.

  1197. Power in

  1198. the sense

  1199. of strength

  1200. because they

  1201. felt so

  1202. weak to do

  1203. the job

  1204. that was

  1205. asked of

  1206. them.

  1207. People like

  1208. to feel

  1209. strong enough.

  1210. We feel

  1211. like we're

  1212. sometimes we

  1213. do feel like

  1214. we're strong

  1215. enough.

  1216. Sometimes we

  1217. do feel like

  1218. we have

  1219. power.

  1220. but there

  1221. are definitely

  1222. times where

  1223. we feel

  1224. weak.

  1225. There are

  1226. definitely

  1227. times when

  1228. we feel

  1229. so weak

  1230. that we

  1231. have nothing

  1232. left to

  1233. give.

  1234. We feel

  1235. like we're

  1236. so weak

  1237. that we

  1238. don't want

  1239. to go

  1240. into this

  1241. world.

  1242. Jesus

  1243. knows our

  1244. weakness.

  1245. Jesus knew

  1246. that these

  1247. disciples needed

  1248. help.

  1249. They needed

  1250. strength and

  1251. so he would

  1252. send that

  1253. Holy Spirit

  1254. we read

  1255. about as

  1256. the helper

  1257. for his

  1258. people.

  1259. He has

  1260. promised to

  1261. give his

  1262. people strength.

  1263. They cannot

  1264. do anything

  1265. on their

  1266. own strength.

  1267. It's clearly

  1268. evident that

  1269. they have no

  1270. strength of

  1271. themselves.

  1272. They lock

  1273. themselves away

  1274. in this room.

  1275. They can't

  1276. face the

  1277. world.

  1278. But they

  1279. changed so

  1280. dramatically

  1281. to go out

  1282. confidently to

  1283. declare the

  1284. gospel.

  1285. And it's

  1286. the same

  1287. for the

  1288. church today

  1289. that we

  1290. must rely

  1291. on the

  1292. power of

  1293. the Spirit,

  1294. the strength

  1295. of the

  1296. Spirit.

  1297. It's the

  1298. same for

  1299. every single

  1300. believer that

  1301. we rely not

  1302. on ourselves

  1303. but we rely

  1304. on his

  1305. strength that

  1306. he gives us

  1307. through the

  1308. Spirit.

  1309. Because it's

  1310. not easy.

  1311. And there

  1312. are days

  1313. where you

  1314. will make

  1315. a mistake.

  1316. There are

  1317. days where

  1318. you will

  1319. blunder.

  1320. Not that

  1321. you want

  1322. to.

  1323. But the

  1324. Spirit will

  1325. also teach

  1326. you,

  1327. correct you.

  1328. That's what

  1329. the Spirit

  1330. will do in

  1331. your life as

  1332. well.

  1333. Give you

  1334. strength but

  1335. also teach

  1336. you every

  1337. step of the

  1338. way.

  1339. And instruct

  1340. you and

  1341. guide you so

  1342. that you may

  1343. keep going.

  1344. and the

  1345. most elderly

  1346. Christian here

  1347. will say

  1348. that, well,

  1349. I have not

  1350. remained a

  1351. believer because

  1352. of my own

  1353. strength.

  1354. I would have

  1355. quickly gone

  1356. off track

  1357. if there

  1358. had not been

  1359. for the

  1360. strength that

  1361. I received

  1362. from the

  1363. Lord Jesus

  1364. Christ.

  1365. And you

  1366. work through

  1367. this passage

  1368. here.

  1369. They receive

  1370. something of

  1371. the Spirit

  1372. that raises

  1373. questions,

  1374. a few

  1375. difficult

  1376. questions that

  1377. are raised

  1378. in the last

  1379. few verses

  1380. here.

  1381. They receive

  1382. the Spirit

  1383. but the

  1384. Spirit comes

  1385. at Pentecost

  1386. later on.

  1387. And people

  1388. ask, well,

  1389. what did they

  1390. receive here

  1391. at this

  1392. moment?

  1393. Was it a

  1394. promise of

  1395. the Pentecost

  1396. to come?

  1397. Was it a

  1398. measure of

  1399. Spirit at

  1400. this moment?

  1401. We're running

  1402. out of time.

  1403. We don't have

  1404. time to

  1405. consider it.

  1406. The second

  1407. thing that it

  1408. says is that

  1409. they would

  1410. have the

  1411. power to

  1412. forgive sins.

  1413. And really

  1414. that is not

  1415. that they

  1416. themselves can

  1417. forgive sins.

  1418. Only the

  1419. Lord Jesus

  1420. Christ can

  1421. forgive sins.

  1422. But they

  1423. are going

  1424. out with

  1425. the strength

  1426. and the

  1427. power of

  1428. the gospel.

  1429. They are

  1430. going out

  1431. as changed

  1432. men and

  1433. it is the

  1434. gospel that

  1435. has the

  1436. power to

  1437. forgive sins.

  1438. They present

  1439. the gospel to

  1440. people as it

  1441. is presented

  1442. to each and

  1443. every one of

  1444. us here this

  1445. morning.

  1446. If we receive

  1447. it, our sins

  1448. will be forgiven.

  1449. If not,

  1450. forgiveness is

  1451. withheld.

  1452. The gospel

  1453. can change

  1454. your life.

  1455. And though we

  1456. feel so very

  1457. weak at times,

  1458. the presence of

  1459. Jesus can turn

  1460. us around,

  1461. turn our world

  1462. upside.

  1463. day.

  1464. Jesus is

  1465. here as a

  1466. man that

  1467. died on the

  1468. cross for

  1469. each and

  1470. every one of

  1471. us, saying

  1472. that he can

  1473. give you

  1474. peace, he

  1475. can give you

  1476. a purpose,

  1477. and he can

  1478. give you

  1479. strength for

  1480. the day and

  1481. strength for

  1482. life.

  1483. And there

  1484. are three

  1485. aspects of

  1486. our lives

  1487. that I

  1488. think we

  1489. all want

  1490. to have.

  1491. We all

  1492. desire to

  1493. have and we

  1494. long to have

  1495. it.

  1496. maybe we

  1497. chase after

  1498. peace,

  1499. purpose,

  1500. strength,

  1501. power.

  1502. The world

  1503. promises to

  1504. give us all

  1505. these things and

  1506. at the end of

  1507. the day,

  1508. we are left

  1509. weak.

  1510. we exhaust

  1511. ourselves finding

  1512. things that

  1513. satisfy us

  1514. when really

  1515. it is to be

  1516. found in the

  1517. gospel of

  1518. Jesus Christ.

  1519. And it is

  1520. nothing of

  1521. ourselves.

  1522. It is a

  1523. gift of God.

  1524. It is whose

  1525. peace that is

  1526. given to us.

  1527. it is whose

  1528. purpose that we

  1529. find ourselves

  1530. doing.

  1531. And it is

  1532. whose strength

  1533. that we find

  1534. the strength to

  1535. go on every

  1536. day.

  1537. Jesus prepared

  1538. the disciples

  1539. for life and

  1540. for death.

  1541. Jesus will

  1542. prepare you

  1543. for life and

  1544. for death

  1545. with his

  1546. peace,

  1547. with his

  1548. purpose,

  1549. and with his

  1550. power.

  1551. I pray that

  1552. we believe in

  1553. the risen Lord

  1554. Jesus.

  1555. Amen.

  1556. We will

  1557. conclude by

  1558. singing in

  1559. Psalm 118 of

  1560. the Scottish

  1561. Psalter.

  1562. Find that on

  1563. page 397 of

  1564. the blue

  1565. praise book.

  1566. We will sing

  1567. from the

  1568. beginning of

  1569. that psalm.

  1570. We will sing

  1571. four stanzas

  1572. down to

  1573. verse Mark

  1574. 6 in

  1575. conclusion.

  1576. The words

  1577. there are,

  1578. O praise

  1579. the Lord

  1580. for he is

  1581. good.

  1582. His mercy

  1583. lasteth ever.

  1584. Let those

  1585. of Israel

  1586. now say,

  1587. his mercy

  1588. faileth

  1589. never.

  1590. Now let

  1591. the house

  1592. of Aaron

  1593. say,

  1594. his mercy

  1595. lasteth

  1596. ever.

  1597. Let those

  1598. that fear

  1599. the Lord

  1600. now say,

  1601. his mercy

  1602. faileth

  1603. never.

  1604. I in

  1605. distress

  1606. called on

  1607. the Lord.

  1608. The Lord

  1609. did answer

  1610. me.

  1611. He in a

  1612. large place

  1613. did me

  1614. set,

  1615. from trouble

  1616. made me

  1617. free.

  1618. The mighty

  1619. Lord is

  1620. on my

  1621. side.

  1622. I will

  1623. not be

  1624. afraid for

  1625. anything that

  1626. man can do.

  1627. I shall

  1628. not be

  1629. dismayed.

  1630. The eternal

  1631. abiding

  1632. mercy of

  1633. God do

  1634. we receive

  1635. it.

  1636. Let us

  1637. stand to

  1638. sing praise

  1639. to him.

  1640. O praise

  1641. the Lord

  1642. for he

  1643. is good,

  1644. his mercy

  1645. lasteth

  1646. ever.

  1647. O praise

  1648. the Lord

  1649. for he

  1650. is good,

  1651. his mercy

  1652. lasteth

  1653. ever.

  1654. Let

  1655. those

  1656. of

  1657. his

  1658. that

  1659. free

  1660. come

  1661. again

1662. Let those that fear the Lord Christ take His mercy favor never.

1663. I am this faithful of the Lord, the Lord did answer me.

1664. He in the dark place did me set, from trouble make me free.

1665. The mighty Lord is on my side, I will not be afraid.

1666. For anything that thou can do, I shall not be blessed.

1667. We'll close in prayer, remain standing.

1668. Our Lord and our God, may we know the eternal abiding love and grace known through Jesus Christ.

1669. As we part with one another, we pray that you would remain with us, watch over us and guide us in every step of life.

1670. That we may consider Christ and give us hearts that are willing to receive Him.

1671. Be with us as we part, forgive us our sins, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Thank you.

  1676. Thank you.

  1677. Thank you.
