  1. And also there's a notice there about the vacancy and the appointment of a vacancy committee and I'll just read that notice through.

  2. The Kirk session met on Monday the 15th of July and agreed to follow the practice previously adopted during a vacancy by taking on the role of the vacancy committee.

  3. The purpose of the vacancy committee is to arrange for the pulpit to be supplied with ministers who are considered suitable to fill the vacancy.

  4. But the final choice belongs to your communicant membership.

  5. The vacancy committee would like to stress that they are seeking to secure the full scope of congregational interest so that the process of contacting ministers and arranging dates for them to preach can begin.

  6. The initial meeting of the vacancy committee is scheduled for Monday the 26th of August.

  7. And over the next five weeks as we pray to the Lord for guidance, the elders would like to encourage everyone in the congregation to speak to their own elder or any elders or any of the elders and inform them of who you would like to be invited to preach in Stornoway.

  8. Please bear in mind that certain procedural steps are required, namely the completion of a financial schedule as well as a congregational development plan.

  9. It is hoped that both these items will be presented to the congregation in September before being sent to the Presbytery and the Mission Board for approval.

  10. All these intimations are, of course, God willing.

  11. We'll now join together in our worship of God by singing to his praise in Psalm 1 in the Scottish Psalter version that you'll find on page 200.

  12. Psalm 1.

  13. The opening psalm to the book of Psalms, a psalm that speaks about two ways to live.

  14. The words there are,

  15. And that man has perfect blessedness, who walketh not astray, in counsel of ungodly men, nor stands in sinners' way, nor sitteth in the scornish chair, but platheth his delight upon God's law, and meditates on his law day and night.

  16. He shall be like a tree that grows near planted by a river, which in his season yields his fruit, and his leaf fadeth never, and all he doth shall prosper well.

  17. The wicked are not so, but like they are unto the chaff, which wind drives to and fro.

  18. We'll sing this whole psalm down to the end, verse Mark 6, to God's praise, and the tune is Denfield.

  19. We'll stand to sing,

  20. That Man Has Perfect Blessedness.

  21. That man has perfect blessedness.

  22. The man has perfect blessedness.

  23. That man has perfect blessedness.

  24. It was the man that God has perfect blessedness.

  25. That man has perfect blessedness.

  26. It was always a love.

  27. The man has perfect blessedness.

  28. The man has perfect blessedness.

  29. The man has perfect blessedness.

  30. 信 R winger

  31. crawly

  32. Dutchmen therefore shall not stand

  33. such as the God we are.

  34. Glory to the Savior of the just

  35. shall we give in the year.

  36. For by the way of God we may

  37. come to the Lord his throne.

  38. Great as the way of wicked name

  39. shall quite be overcome.

  40. Let us now join together in prayer.

  41. Let us pray.

  42. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that we can be joined again this evening now to return

  43. praise and thanks to you.

  44. And as we sing these words we are mindful of the separation that is made, of the divisions that is made between the chaff and the wheat, between the righteous and the wicked, between the believer and the unbeliever.

  45. So Lord, we pray as we gather that we would be set before your feet this evening.

  46. That we would see ourselves in light of your word.

  47. That you would illuminate who we are before God.

  48. That we would draw near to you with reverence and fear.

  49. Saying and announcing, proclaiming that you are holy, holy, holy.

  50. Lord, our God, we pray that you would have mercy upon us.

  51. That we would know the full extent of your everlasting mercy and love that has been shown to us in Christ Jesus.

  52. And it is in Christ Jesus that we have confidence to draw near to you.

  53. For we look at ourselves and we see so many failures.

  54. We see the sinfulness of our hearts.

  55. We see the desires of the flesh.

  56. Leading us in ways contrary to your word.

  57. But Christ saw us in our affliction.

  58. In our great need of a saviour.

  59. And Christ chose us before we chose him.

  60. Christ loved us before we loved him.

  61. And so Christ came in his abundance of compassion.

  62. To alleviate us from our great suffering of sin.

  63. To take that burden of condemnation away from our backs.

  64. A burden that we cannot carry.

  65. A burden that leaves us guilty before God.

  66. You take it from us.

  67. You part us.

  68. You part us from the sins.

  69. So that those who believe in you have no more condemnation before God.

  70. We wonder that Christ would ever love us.

  71. But let us stand with all that he does.

  72. Let us come before the cross and see the riches that are immeasurable.

  73. In his love that he died for his friends.

  74. No greater love is this that anyone can show to another.

  75. That he would give up his life.

  76. And so he did for all his people.

  77. So let us have understanding of this.

  78. Let us see Christ.

  79. In a way that we have never seen him before.

  80. In his beauty.

  81. In his beauty.

  82. In wonder.

  83. In ways that we cannot fully comprehend.

  84. Lord, by the power of your spirit.

  85. Open our eyes and unblock our ears.

  86. To see Christ.

  87. To understand the gospel.

  88. To receive Jesus Christ.

  89. And to believe in him.

  90. To trust in the resurrected and risen Lord Jesus.

  91. And we pray that this gospel message would go out with power across our nation.

  92. To all lands and all countries.

  93. And we pray for Labourish to go with it.

  94. We pray that you would raise up people to bring your message to the world.

  95. To our nation.

  96. To our towns.

  97. To our villages.

  98. To the people that have no word of Jesus Christ.

  99. Who have forgotten Jesus Christ.

  100. Who do not know what the cross means.

  101. Lord, we pray that you would bring understanding to our people.

  102. And that we would have a concern for souls that are lost.

  103. Whether they be in our nation or in our families.

  104. We pray that you would give us wisdom in these things that are so difficult.

  105. We wish that we could make them understand.

  106. We wish that we could open their eyes to see Christ Jesus in all his beauty.

  107. But we pray that you would give us words according to your will and according to your ways.

  108. Aligned with your providence.

  109. That you may open their eyes to the power of your spirit.

  110. And Lord, we give thanks for faithful ministries from this pulpit.

  111. We give thanks for the ministry of James McKeever.

  112. We thank you for him and Donna being here.

  113. We pray that we would be mindful of him in his retirement.

  114. And likewise, Kenny I.

  115. We pray that we would be mindful of him also.

  116. And we pray for Calum Mordo.

  117. We pray for Johan and the family.

  118. We pray that you would uphold them and strengthen them for the time ahead.

  119. The time of vacancy.

  120. Time of uncertainty.

  121. A time of changes.

  122. Lord, we pray that we would be prayerful as a people.

  123. That we would be considerate of one another.

  124. That we would be asking you to show us and direct us in your ways.

  125. And lead us to someone whom you have chosen.

  126. To be our under-shepherd.

  127. To direct us and to guide us.

  128. Lord, we pray for the Lord.

  129. We pray for congregations who are likewise in vacancy.

  130. We pray for Graver.

  131. We pray for Shobost.

  132. We remember the two congregations in use.

  133. We pray likewise that you would give them one mind together.

  134. Lead them to a man that is suitable for them.

  135. To teach and instruct them.

  136. To show them Jesus Christ.

  137. Lord, we acknowledge that it is not of our own strength.

  138. Nor any man's strength.

  139. That we can open eyes.

  140. But we fully rely upon the power of your spirit.

  141. God, we pray for the Lord.

  142. God, we pray for the Lord.

  143. God, we pray for the Lord.

  144. God, we pray for the Lord.

  145. So as we turn to your words this evening.

  146. As we sing your praises.

  147. As we consider it.

  148. Instruct us.

  149. Guide us.

  150. Teach us.

  151. Forgive us if we say anything on this.

  152. Lord, just turn us towards you.

  153. Show us your paths, we pray.

  154. Meet us at our own need.

  155. Whatever it is.

  156. For you are a God that hears our prayers.

  157. You are a God that hears the cries of our souls.

  158. The anxieties and anguish that we feel.

  159. The cries and pains of life.

  160. You know them.

  161. But you are a loving heavenly Father that knows what is best to give to his children.

  162. And so we wait faithfully upon you.

  163. To instruct us and guide us.

  164. We pray for those who do have worries.

  165. We pray that you would be a wonderful counsellor to them.

  166. We pray for those who are born.

  167. We pray that you would be their comfort.

  168. For you are the God of all comfort.

  169. We pray that you would be near to those that are broken hearted.

  170. For we know that the scars of loss can last many years.

  171. And often never go away.

  172. And remain with us.

  173. Comfort your people, we pray.

  174. Lord, we ask that you would feed our souls.

  175. Enrich us as we join together here.

  176. May we know the blessing of being together as your people.

  177. Speak to us through your word.

  178. Encourage us.

  179. Enrich us.

  180. Guide us.

  181. And keep us.

  182. We pray in Jesus' name.

  183. Amen.

  184. We'll continue in our praise of God by singing in Psalm 4.

  185. Psalm 4 in the Sing Psalms version.

  186. Find that on page 4.

  187. Singing from verse 3.

  188. Down to the end of that psalm again.

  189. Psalm 4.

  190. Sing Psalms.

  191. Singing from verse 3.

  192. Know that the Lord has set apart the godly as his own.

  193. The Lord will hear me when I call.

  194. And my request make known.

  195. In anger do not break God's law.

  196. Consider and be still.

  197. Present a righteous sacrifice.

  198. And wait upon his will.

  199. Oh, who can show us any good?

  200. I hear so many say.

  201. Oh, Lord, shine on us with your light.

  202. Show us your face, I pray.

  203. You filled my heart with greater joy than others may have found.

  204. As they rejoiced at harvest time.

  205. When grain and wine abound.

  206. I will lie down and sleep in peace.

  207. My heart will rest secure.

  208. For you alone, oh gracious Lord.

  209. Will keep me safe and sure.

  210. We'll sing these words to the tune.

  211. We'll stand to sing.

  212. Know that the Lord has set apart the godly as his own.

  213. The Lord will hear me when I call.

  214. And my request may know.

  215. In anger do not break God's law.

  216. Consider and be still.

  217. Present and be still.

  218. Present and be still.

  219. Present and be still.

  220. And wait upon his will.

  221. Or who can show us any good?

  222. I hear so many say.

  223. O Lord, shine on us with your light, show us your grace, I pray.

  224. You fill my heart with greater joy, another may have found.

  225. As they rejoice at harvest time, when rain and wine are.

  226. I will lie down and sleep in peace, my heart will rest, Savior.

  227. Are you alone, O gracious Lord, will keep me safe and sure.

  228. Let us turn now to a reading in Scripture, and we'll find that in the Gospel of John.

  229. John chapter 11, from the beginning of that chapter.

    John 11 chapter mention

  230. And again this evening we'll have two readings from the Gospel of John.

  231. After reading in John 11, we'll turn to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  232. John chapter 11, the beginning, down to verse 27.

    John 11 chapter mention

  233. The account of Lazarus' death.

  234. Let us hear God's word.

  235. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

  236. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother

  237. Lazarus was ill.

  238. So the sister sent to him, saying, Lord, he whom you love is ill.

  239. But when Jesus heard it, he said, this illness does not lead to death.

  240. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  241. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

  242. So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

  243. Then after this, he said to the disciples, let us go to Judea again.

  244. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?

  245. Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day?

  246. If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

  247. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

  248. After saying these things, he said to them, our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.

  249. The disciples said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.

  250. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest and sleep.

  251. Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.

  252. But let us go to him.

  253. So Thomas called the twin, said to his fellow disciples,

  254. Let us also go, that we may die with him.

  255. Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  256. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,

  257. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

  258. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.

  259. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  260. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

  261. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again.

  262. Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

  263. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

  264. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  265. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  266. Do you believe this?

  267. She said to him, yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.

  268. Now, we turn to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  269. And we read there from verse 24.

  270. This is Jesus' resurrection appearance to Thomas.

  271. We'll read down to the end of the chapter.

  272. Now, Thomas, one of the twelve called the twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

  273. So the other disciples told him, we have seen the Lord.

  274. But he said to them, unless I see his hands, the mark of the nails,

  275. and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.

  276. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.

  277. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, peace be with you.

  278. Then he said to Thomas, put your finger here, and see my hands, and put out your hand and place it in my side.

  279. Do not disbelieve, but believe.

  280. Thomas answered him, my Lord and my God.

  281. Jesus said to him, have you believed because you have seen me?

  282. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

  283. Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.

  284. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  285. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  286. Amen.

  287. May the reading of God's word be a blessing to those who have heard it.

  288. We'll continue in our praise now by singing in Psalm 147 in the Sing Psalms version.

  289. You'll find that on page 193 of the Blue Praise Book, singing from verse 14.

  290. Sing down to verse marked 18.

  291. Psalm 147 in verse 14.

  292. The Lord will grant you peace within the borders of your land,

  293. and finest wheat will fill your fields from his sustaining hand.

  294. To all the corners of the earth the Lord's commands proceeds,

  295. for when he speaks his word goes forth through all the world with speed.

  296. He spreads the snow as wool, the frost like ashes on the land.

  297. He hurls forth icy hail like stones.

  298. Who can such cold withstand?

  299. But when he sends his mighty word and makes the warm winds blow,

  300. the frozen waters start to melt and once again to flow.

  301. May the Lord break down the coldness of our heart and make the warmth of his spirit flow in us.

  302. Let us stand to sing this Psalm 14 to 18, the tune is Torwood.

  303. The Lord will grant you peace within the borders of your land.

  304. The Lord will grant you peace within the borders of your land,

  305. and kindness we will fill your fields from his casting hand.

  306. To all the corners of the earth the Lord's commands proceed.

  307. For when he speaks his word goes forth through all the world with speed.

  308. He spreads the snow as wool, the frost like ashes on the land.

  309. He earns for price in him like stones.

  310. Who can such cold withstand?

  311. He earns for price in him like stones.

  312. But when he sends his mighty word and makes the warm wind blow,

  313. the frozen waters start to melt and once again to the wind.

  314. Let us stand back.

  315. To всю life.

  316. Now we turn back to the passage that we read there in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  317. As you read it, verse 29.

  318. Jesus said to him,

  319. Have you believed because you have seen me?

  320. Blessed are those who have not seen

  321. and yet have believed.

  322. Now if you were with us in the morning,

  323. we thought about Jesus' resurrection appearance

  324. to the fearful disciples within the locked room.

  325. Now it took place on the evening

  326. of Jesus' first appearance to Mary.

  327. Jesus appeared to Mary at sunrise.

  328. He appears to the disciples at the evening hour.

  329. And now we come to this account with Thomas.

  330. We're eight days later in the storyline,

  331. but it doesn't seem like we've progressed very far, does it?

  332. We're still in a locked room,

  333. which we believe is the same.

  334. Locked room.

  335. And this third resurrection appearance,

  336. it seems to be the subsequent resurrection appearance

  337. that Christ has made.

  338. We noted in the morning that John didn't include

  339. every resurrection appearance,

  340. but when we consider all that we have,

  341. it seems like this is the next appearance of Christ.

  342. But there is a focus here in this appearance.

  343. There is a significance in this appearance

  344. because it is focused on one man, Thomas.

  345. And this appearance tells us that Thomas was not present with them

  346. on the first day of the week with the rest of the disciples.

  347. Why we're not sure?

  348. I wish we did know.

  349. It would fill out the story for us with more detail.

  350. But we don't know.

  351. Thomas wasn't there.

  352. Thomas missed out on the appearance of Jesus Christ.

  353. And I'm sure that's a feeling that we can all relate to,

  354. that we've missed out on something.

  355. There's surely some point in our lives

  356. where we've missed out on something

  357. that we really wanted to see.

  358. And it can be made all the worse

  359. by our friends and our families

  360. telling us how amazing it was,

  361. how inspiring it was,

  362. how special it was

  363. to see this thing take place.

  364. I suppose in many ways it's been lost

  365. with the advances in technology.

  366. Things can be captured in video.

  367. Things can be photographed.

  368. You can re-watch TV programs you've missed.

  369. You can see goals that you've missed.

  370. You can see pictures of the northern lights that you missed.

  371. In fact, it's swung so far now

  372. that technology has advanced.

  373. When you see these things,

  374. you're not actually sure if it's true now

  375. because they can be recreated and edited in such a way.

  376. And I believe that if there was that sort of evidence of Jesus

  377. in his resurrected state,

  378. I don't think it would help us much.

  379. There would still be doubted.

  380. There would still be people sceptical of it.

  381. And you can have these moments replayed.

  382. You can have these photos to re-look at.

  383. But it doesn't quite capture

  384. what people call the magic of the moment.

  385. You feel it like you've missed out

  386. by not being there.

  387. And it leaves you saying,

  388. I wish I had been there.

  389. I wish I had seen it.

  390. I wish I had that experience

  391. that my friends and family are telling me about it.

  392. And I believe Thomas would have been saying

  393. the exact same words.

  394. I wish I had seen the Lord.

  395. I wish I had seen him appear.

  396. All his friends as the ten disciples were telling him,

  397. we have seen the Lord.

  398. Jesus is alive.

  399. But it doesn't quite capture the magic of the moment for him.

  400. He doesn't believe them fully.

  401. And you know yourself

  402. that when we experience something in our lives,

  403. it's not quite the same

  404. as someone telling us about it.

  405. Now there are many people in this building,

  406. there are many believers in this world

  407. that have had amazing experiences

  408. where the Lord Jesus has revealed himself to them.

  409. And they want to tell people about it.

  410. It's a natural thing for you to tell someone

  411. about something spectacular that has happened in your life.

  412. Something unbelievable.

  413. You want to tell them about it.

  414. You want them to believe.

  415. You wish that they would have experienced it as well.

  416. But it's often true

  417. that when the believer tries to express

  418. their new understanding of who Jesus Christ is,

  419. that Jesus has revealed himself to them,

  420. when they tell their testimony

  421. about why they believe in Jesus Christ,

  422. doesn't quite have the same impact on people.

  423. They can tell it with passion.

  424. They can tell it with excitement.

  425. They just...

  426. Something just doesn't click.

  427. Just don't get it.

  428. The disciples here are telling Thomas,

  429. we've seen the Lord.

  430. He's alive.

  431. But it doesn't have an effect until he experiences it himself.

  432. We can be told something a hundred times over.

  433. It doesn't quite hit home until we experience it.

  434. And you hear people who have recently been converted

  435. echo something like,

  436. why did no one tell me?

  437. And it's like, we did.

  438. We did tell you.

  439. It just...

  440. You didn't get it.

  441. It just didn't...

  442. It just didn't...

  443. Your eyes hadn't been opened to understand.

  444. You didn't see Jesus fully when I spoke.

  445. Jesus had to reveal himself to you.

  446. And we can have doubts.

  447. We can feel like we've missed out on things.

  448. And I believe there are many of us here

  449. who are just like Thomas,

  450. who see what the Christian has.

  451. And they say in the secrecy of their own hearts,

  452. I wish I had what they have.

  453. I wish I could say the same thing

  454. that the believer says.

  455. I wish the Lord would show himself to me

  456. so that I could say to everyone,

  457. I am a Christian.

  458. So that I could have the assurance

  459. to give my life to Jesus Christ.

  460. But I just don't have it.

  461. I hope as we continue looking through

  462. the resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ.

  463. And as we turn to Thomas,

  464. the man that doubted,

  465. I hope that we will get to see Jesus,

  466. that he will reveal himself to us,

  467. that he would displace all our doubts,

  468. that we would not miss out on Christ.

  469. And as we look at Thomas,

  470. I firstly want to consider

  471. Thomas and his doubt.

  472. Thomas and his doubt.

  473. Thomas has become known as Doubting Thomas.

  474. It may not be the most fairest name to give him.

  475. I don't know if we can build

  476. a true character of Thomas

  477. by what we have from him in Scripture.

  478. We don't have a lot about him in Scripture.

  479. There's a few occurrences where he appears.

  480. He actually appeared in the first reading that we had.

  481. Jesus is there.

  482. He hears about Lazarus having died,

  483. well, having been ill.

  484. He waits two days.

  485. He knows that Lazarus has died.

  486. He says,

  487. we must return to Judea.

  488. We must return because

  489. I will give him life.

  490. And the disciples are going,

  491. no, no, no, hold on.

  492. You can't go there.

  493. The Jews are ready to kill you.

  494. They're going to stone you.

  495. Why are we going to go there?

  496. Jesus says,

  497. we must go.

  498. The disciples see a problem with it.

  499. Jesus' account there is that

  500. Jesus tells him plainly,

  501. Lazarus has died.

  502. And for your sake,

  503. I am glad that I was not there

  504. so that you may believe.

  505. Let us go to him.

  506. And then Thomas comes in

  507. and he says to his disciples,

  508. let us also go

  509. that we may die with him.

  510. Thomas is ready to die with Christ.

  511. He's ready to go with Christ,

  512. whatever it means.

  513. And he encourages all the other disciples

  514. to be of the same mind.

  515. But obviously,

  516. obviously highlights a zeal

  517. and a passion within Thomas

  518. to do what is right,

  519. to go with Jesus

  520. and to follow him wherever he goes.

  521. To encourage his friends

  522. to come as well.

  523. But when the rubber hit the road

  524. and Jesus is captured,

  525. the threat of death comes to them.

  526. When Jesus has been taken

  527. to be crucified,

  528. they're nowhere to be seen.

  529. They're displaced.

  530. They're dispersed.

  531. The only other time we come across Thomas

  532. is actually in the chapter

  533. that we read in the morning as well,

  534. in John 14,

  535. though we didn't read this part.

  536. Thomas said to Jesus

  537. when he says that,

  538. I am the way,

  539. the truth,

  540. and the life.

  541. When he says that,

  542. I have gone to prepare

  543. a place for you.

  544. Thomas asks,

  545. how do we know

  546. where you are going?

  547. How can we know the way?

  548. Thomas wants to be with Jesus.

  549. Thomas wants to know

  550. where Jesus is going.

  551. And although we look at these

  552. few comments that we have,

  553. we can say,

  554. well,

  555. there's a bit of doubt

  556. in his comments.

  557. He's doubting that,

  558. he's not saying that

  559. Jesus will resurrect Lazarus.

  560. He's questioning

  561. where Jesus is going

  562. and how can we know the way.

  563. It's more pessimistic

  564. than doubtful.

  565. There's a negative

  566. sort of outlook

  567. in his life.

  568. But he's seeking an answer.

  569. He's asking,

  570. how can we know the way?

  571. Where are you going?

  572. Are you leaving us?

  573. It's hard to form

  574. a true character of Thomas

  575. to say for sure

  576. that we can call him

  577. doubting Thomas.

  578. But it is worth noting

  579. that Thomas was not

  580. the only doubter

  581. in the Gospels.

  582. You go to Luke's Gospel

  583. and you read the account

  584. where Mary returns

  585. saying,

  586. I have seen

  587. the risen Lord Jesus.

  588. She says these things

  589. to the apostles

  590. and Luke's Gospel

  591. tells us

  592. that all the apostles

  593. thought

  594. what she said

  595. was an idle tale.

  596. A story that was

  597. made up.

  598. And it says

  599. that they did

  600. not believe him.

  601. Luke goes on

  602. to say that

  603. when they did

  604. see Jesus,

  605. the disciples

  606. disbelieved for joy

  607. and were marvelling.

  608. They disbelieved.

  609. They couldn't believe

  610. that Jesus

  611. was actually alive.

  612. They couldn't believe it.

  613. They were marvelling

  614. that Jesus

  615. appeared before them

  616. in his resurrected body.

  617. So you can see,

  618. well,

  619. the disciples

  620. had doubts.

  621. Thomas

  622. had doubts.

  623. And it is true

  624. surely that

  625. we have our

  626. doubts as well

  627. in our experience.

  628. we question

  629. the resurrected

  630. Lord Jesus.

  631. It's hard

  632. to grasp.

  633. It's difficult

  634. to understand.

  635. Thomas

  636. couldn't believe it.

  637. And he said,

  638. unless I see

  639. his hands,

  640. the mark of his nails,

  641. I put my finger

  642. into these marks,

  643. place my hand

  644. in his side,

  645. I will never

  646. believe.

  647. John's gospel,

  648. it's largely

  649. based on signs

  650. of Jesus Christ.

  651. But it's wrong

  652. to ask

  653. Jesus Christ

  654. and to

  655. place our salvation

  656. on a sign

  657. that we request

  658. of him.

  659. because it's not

  660. signs,

  661. really.

  662. We see this

  663. account of Thomas.

  664. Jesus stands

  665. before him.

  666. He asks him

  667. to put his hand

  668. into his scars,

  669. but I don't think

  670. he did.

  671. It doesn't quite

  672. tell us if he did

  673. or not.

  674. Seeing was enough

  675. for Thomas.

  676. And to see

  677. Jesus Christ

  678. is enough

  679. for us too.

  680. We ask

  681. for signs.

  682. Sometimes

  683. the Lord

  684. can use signs.

  685. And sometimes

  686. the Lord

  687. will answer

  688. our requests.

  689. But

  690. it's not

  691. a good way,

  692. I don't think.

  693. It's not

  694. a way

  695. in which

  696. we should

  697. be seeking

  698. the Lord Jesus.

  699. We should

  700. be seeking

  701. to see

  702. him.

  703. Seeking

  704. that he

  705. would reveal

  706. himself to

  707. us in

  708. his way,

  709. in his

  710. timing.

  711. But anyway,

  712. we're in the

  713. locked room

  714. with the

  715. disciples here.

  716. Eight days

  717. later.

  718. And that

  719. period carries

  720. some significance

  721. about this

  722. so-called

  723. doubter.

  724. He wasn't

  725. there for

  726. the first

  727. revealing.

  728. And I'm

  729. sure he

  730. heard about

  731. it straight

  732. away.

  733. That first

  734. day,

  735. Jesus was

  736. there in

  737. the morning,

  738. Jesus was

  739. there in

  740. the afternoon

  741. with the

  742. two on

  743. the road

  744. to the

  745. mails.

  746. Jesus

  747. appeared to

  748. the

  749. disciples

  750. at night.

  751. And I

  752. believe when

  753. he heard

  754. all of

  755. these

  756. accounts,

  757. he

  758. wouldn't

  759. dare

  760. depart

  761. from being

  762. with the

  763. people.

  764. You can

  765. imagine him

  766. waiting the

  767. next day.

  768. Comes and

  769. goes.

  770. Nothing

  771. happens.

  772. Third day,

  773. nothing.

  774. Fourth day,

  775. nothing.

  776. Fifth,

  777. sixth,

  778. nothing.

  779. Seventh,

  780. nothing.

  781. But what

  782. he did

  783. do was

  784. he remained

  785. with the

  786. people.

  787. He remained

  788. with the

  789. disciples.

  790. He remained

  791. with the

  792. early church,

  793. expecting to

  794. see Jesus,

  795. that Jesus

  796. would reveal

  797. himself to

  798. him,

  799. faithfully,

  800. holding on,

  801. expecting to

  802. see Jesus.

  803. and he

  804. missed out,

  805. yes,

  806. in the

  807. first place.

  808. But he

  809. came back

  810. to where

  811. Jesus had

  812. revealed

  813. himself to

  814. the people.

  815. And that

  816. is true

  817. of all of

  818. everyone that

  819. is here

  820. today.

  821. If you

  822. want to

  823. see Jesus,

  824. if you

  825. feel like

  826. you've

  827. missed out

  828. on what

  829. the Christian

  830. has,

  831. if you

  832. wanted to

  833. believe,

  834. come to

  835. where the

  836. Lord Jesus

  837. reveals himself

  838. to his

  839. people,

  840. come to

  841. the gathering

  842. of the

  843. church,

  844. to the

  845. believers.

  846. This is

  847. the place

  848. where he

  849. pours out

  850. his blessings

  851. upon the

  852. people.

  853. And it

  854. is often

  855. the place

  856. where he

  857. has awakened

  858. many souls

  859. that have

  860. been in

  861. darkness.

  862. Many of

  863. you here

  864. who are

  865. believers

  866. will have

  867. memories

  868. of sitting

  869. in pews

  870. and being

  871. awakened

  872. by the

  873. reading of

  874. scripture,

  875. feeling

  876. condemned

  877. by the

  878. words that

  879. were preached,

  880. feeling the

  881. psalms

  882. speaking to

  883. you as

  884. they were

  885. sung.

  886. This is a

  887. place where

  888. Jesus meets

  889. with his

  890. people.

  891. If we

  892. isolate

  893. ourselves

  894. from the

  895. church,

  896. we cannot

  897. expect that

  898. Jesus will

  899. reveal himself

  900. to us.

  901. And I

  902. believe that

  903. if we are

  904. duly diligent

  905. in attending

  906. the means

  907. of grace

  908. and gathering

  909. with the

  910. Lord's

  911. people,

  912. he will

  913. reveal

  914. himself to

  915. us.

  916. But it

  917. is true

  918. that the

  919. believer can

  920. also have

  921. many doubts

  922. as well.

  923. We can

  924. doubt whether

  925. he loves

  926. us, we

  927. can doubt

  928. at times

  929. whether we

  930. are truly

  931. saved, and

  932. the devil

  933. will play

  934. havoc with

  935. your doubts.

  936. But you

  937. know that we

  938. are really

  939. filled with

  940. doubts when

  941. we look at

  942. ourselves.

  943. There is

  944. nothing within

  945. us that

  946. deserves

  947. salvation.

  948. There is

  949. nothing within

  950. us that

  951. deserves the

  952. redeeming power

  953. of Jesus

  954. Christ in

  955. our lives.

  956. We look

  957. inwardly and

  958. we plague

  959. ourselves

  960. with

  961. doubts.

  962. It is

  963. said that

  964. never doubt

  965. in the dark

  966. what God

  967. told you

  968. in the

  969. light.

  970. Never doubt

  971. in the dark

  972. what God

  973. told you

  974. in the

  975. light.

  976. What God

  977. says to

  978. you in

  979. scripture,

  980. we can

  981. go away

  982. with it

  983. and we

  984. can doubt

  985. it.

  986. when we

  987. are isolated

  988. from it.

  989. When we

  990. are in

  991. the dark

  992. we can

  993. doubt

  994. these

  995. things.

  996. We must

  997. come back

  998. to Christ.

  999. We must

  1000. change our

  1001. vision from

  1002. looking at

  1003. ourselves when

  1004. we are

  1005. doubting to

  1006. looking at

  1007. the Lord

  1008. Jesus Christ.

  1009. As we

  1010. are saying

  1011. to the

  1012. children to

  1013. keep our

  1014. eye on

  1015. him, to

  1016. keep our

  1017. eye on

  1018. the word.

  1019. And if

  1020. we do

  1021. that we

  1022. will be

  1023. delivered from

  1024. doubts.

  1025. We will

  1026. look at

  1027. the love

  1028. of Christ.

  1029. we will

  1030. look at

  1031. his

  1032. compassion.

  1033. We will

  1034. look at

  1035. his death.

  1036. We will

  1037. look at

  1038. his eternal

  1039. promises to

  1040. his people

  1041. and it

  1042. will give

  1043. us a

  1044. hope.

  1045. To

  1046. displace

  1047. the doubt

  1048. the believer

  1049. must turn

  1050. from looking

  1051. at himself

  1052. and focus

  1053. upon the

  1054. Lord Jesus

  1055. and his

  1056. love for

  1057. them.

  1058. We find

  1059. here that

  1060. we can be

  1061. plagued with

  1062. doubts.

  1063. But also

  1064. there is a

  1065. deliverance

  1066. from these

  1067. doubts.

  1068. We have

  1069. doubts but

  1070. there is a

  1071. deliverance.

  1072. The radical

  1073. difference in

  1074. this man's

  1075. life is the

  1076. appearance of

  1077. Christ again.

  1078. Every

  1079. appearance of

  1080. Christ has

  1081. made a

  1082. radical difference

  1083. of those who

  1084. witnessed him.

  1085. And he

  1086. comes into

  1087. this room

  1088. and he

  1089. says,

  1090. peace be

  1091. with you.

  1092. Jesus

  1093. speaks

  1094. addressing

  1095. Thomas

  1096. in the

  1097. words that

  1098. he spoke

  1099. to his

  1100. disciples.

  1101. meaning that

  1102. Christ

  1103. hears

  1104. every word

  1105. that we

  1106. utter.

  1107. He did

  1108. not have to

  1109. be physically

  1110. present to

  1111. hear the

  1112. doubts of

  1113. Thomas.

  1114. He heard

  1115. them.

  1116. And when he

  1117. appeared he

  1118. addressed Thomas

  1119. personally.

  1120. said he

  1121. needed to

  1122. put his

  1123. fingers into

  1124. the scars

  1125. of Jesus'

  1126. hands which

  1127. would have

  1128. been more

  1129. so his

  1130. wrists.

  1131. then he

  1132. says to

  1133. touch him.

  1134. But we

  1135. don't know

  1136. if he

  1137. did or

  1138. not.

  1139. But Jesus

  1140. adds there

  1141. do not

  1142. disbelieve

  1143. but believe.

  1144. And we

  1145. can struggle

  1146. to believe

  1147. at times.

  1148. The

  1149. resurrection

  1150. is hard

  1151. to grasp.

  1152. The

  1153. disciples

  1154. struggle to

  1155. understand it.

  1156. We

  1157. struggle to

  1158. understand it.

  1159. But we

  1160. look at the

  1161. evidence that

  1162. we have

  1163. here.

  1164. We look at

  1165. the gospel

  1166. that John

  1167. has written

  1168. here.

  1169. And we

  1170. come to

  1171. it again.

  1172. The purpose

  1173. was that we

  1174. would believe.

  1175. We have

  1176. seen lives

  1177. radically

  1178. changed by

  1179. the appearance

  1180. of Christ.

  1181. And he

  1182. wishes, he

  1183. prays, he

  1184. writes that

  1185. you too

  1186. would believe

  1187. that when

  1188. you come and

  1189. consider the

  1190. resurrected Lord

  1191. Jesus Christ

  1192. he would

  1193. reveal himself

  1194. to you.

  1195. The

  1196. resurrection

  1197. appearance as we

  1198. said motivated

  1199. them like

  1200. nothing else

  1201. could have.

  1202. It was the

  1203. match to

  1204. the fire

  1205. that ignited

  1206. their hearts

  1207. for the

  1208. Lord Jesus,

  1209. ignited them

  1210. to turn the

  1211. world upside

  1212. down.

  1213. They went

  1214. out with

  1215. their own

  1216. testimony.

  1217. We have

  1218. seen the

  1219. Lord Jesus.

  1220. Thomas could

  1221. say the

  1222. same thing

  1223. in his life.

  1224. I have

  1225. seen the

  1226. Lord Jesus.

  1227. and he

  1228. declared it

  1229. amongst the

  1230. people.

  1231. He had

  1232. his doubts.

  1233. He was

  1234. delivered when

  1235. he saw

  1236. Jesus Christ

  1237. but he

  1238. went out

  1239. declaring

  1240. what he

  1241. had seen.

  1242. When you

  1243. see Jesus,

  1244. when Jesus

  1245. reveals himself

  1246. to you,

  1247. it changes

  1248. everything.

  1249. Thomas here

  1250. had his

  1251. own

  1252. declaration.

  1253. He says

  1254. there,

  1255. my Lord

  1256. and my

  1257. God

  1258. in verse

  1259. 28.

  1260. A

  1261. personal

  1262. declaration

  1263. that Jesus

  1264. Christ is

  1265. his Lord

  1266. and his

  1267. God.

  1268. In many

  1269. ways it

  1270. is so

  1271. personal

  1272. that Jesus

  1273. speaks

  1274. directly

  1275. into

  1276. his

  1277. circumstance,

  1278. directly

  1279. to his

  1280. heart,

  1281. to his

  1282. need,

  1283. and yet

  1284. it is so

  1285. public.

  1286. Because he

  1287. has been

  1288. transformed.

  1289. He has

  1290. a new

  1291. testimony

  1292. to speak

  1293. about.

  1294. Something

  1295. exceptional

  1296. has happened

  1297. in his

  1298. life.

  1299. And he

  1300. wants to

  1301. tell people

  1302. about it.

  1303. He has

  1304. to tell

  1305. people

  1306. about it.

  1307. Jesus

  1308. Christ is

  1309. my Lord

  1310. and my

  1311. God.

  1312. And that

  1313. phrase

  1314. highlights

  1315. the divine

  1316. deity

  1317. of Jesus

  1318. Christ.

  1319. The

  1320. title

  1321. of God

  1322. his

  1323. Lord.

  1324. And

  1325. Jesus

  1326. receives

  1327. it

  1328. because

  1329. it is

  1330. right.

  1331. If it

  1332. was wrong

  1333. Jesus

  1334. would have

  1335. said

  1336. do not

  1337. worship

  1338. me.

  1339. with such

  1340. words.

  1341. But

  1342. Thomas

  1343. is

  1344. entirely

  1345. right.

  1346. And

  1347. Jesus

  1348. receives

  1349. that

  1350. declaration

  1351. from

  1352. Thomas.

  1353. The

  1354. change

  1355. that

  1356. Christ

  1357. brings

  1358. to us

  1359. is

  1360. personal

  1361. and

  1362. public.

  1363. God

  1364. will

  1365. God

  1366. will

  1367. speak.

  1368. He

  1369. speaks

  1370. to the

  1371. depths

  1372. of

  1373. our

  1374. needs.

  1375. Yet

  1376. we

  1377. cannot

  1378. but

  1379. speak

  1380. about it.

  1381. We

  1382. wish that

  1383. others

  1384. would

  1385. likewise

  1386. know

  1387. who

  1388. Jesus

  1389. Christ

  1390. is

  1391. and

  1392. the

  1393. change

  1394. that

  1395. he

  1396. has

  1397. made

  1398. in

  1399. their

  1400. lives.

  1401. It's a

  1402. true

  1403. feeling

  1404. that we

  1405. too

  1406. can't

  1407. doubt.

  1408. Thomas

  1409. was set

  1410. never

  1411. to believe.

  1412. That's what his words

  1413. unless he had

  1414. seen him

  1415. himself

  1416. which adds

  1417. a huge

  1418. credibility

  1419. to the

  1420. fact that

  1421. Jesus

  1422. appeared

  1423. to him.

  1424. the

  1425. one

  1426. that

  1427. said

  1428. never

  1429. turns

  1430. around

  1431. and

  1432. says

  1433. my

  1434. Lord

  1435. and

  1436. my

  1437. God.

  1438. Thomas'

  1439. experience

  1440. delivered him

  1441. from all

  1442. doubts

  1443. and I

  1444. pray that

  1445. the Lord

  1446. Jesus

  1447. would

  1448. reveal

  1449. himself

  1450. to

  1451. you

  1452. in

  1453. scripture

  1454. in

  1455. his

  1456. word

  1457. in

  1458. the

  1459. singing

  1460. of

  1461. his

  1462. psalms

  1463. in

  1464. the

  1465. proclamation

  1466. of

  1467. his

  1468. word

  1469. whether

  1470. it's

  1471. in

  1472. three

  1473. days

  1474. time

  1475. and

  1476. eight

  1477. days

  1478. time

  1479. and

  1480. three

  1481. years

  1482. time

  1483. and

  1484. eight

  1485. years

  1486. times

  1487. do

  1488. not

  1489. disbelieve

  1490. that he

  1491. can do

  1492. it.

  1493. Believe

  1494. in the

  1495. Lord

  1496. Jesus

  1497. Christ.

  1498. Believe

  1499. that he

  1500. will reveal

  1501. himself

  1502. to you.

  1503. Do

  1504. not

  1505. doubt

  1506. the

  1507. resurrection.

  1508. Thomas

  1509. went on

  1510. with his

  1511. declaration

  1512. and

  1513. tradition

  1514. suggests

  1515. that

  1516. Thomas

  1517. travelled

  1518. as far

  1519. as

  1520. India

  1521. with

  1522. the

  1523. gospel

  1524. where

  1525. it

  1526. is

  1527. reported

  1528. that

  1529. he

  1530. was

  1531. martyred

  1532. with

  1533. a

  1534. spear

  1535. killed

  1536. by

  1537. someone

  1538. with

  1539. a

  1540. spear.

  1541. With

  1542. the

  1543. assurance

  1544. of

  1545. Christ's

  1546. resurrection

  1547. in

  1548. his

  1549. life

  1550. he

  1551. went

  1552. out

  1553. declaring

  1554. the

  1555. wonderful

  1556. gospel

  1557. of

  1558. Jesus.

  1559. and

  1560. his

  1561. earlier

  1562. declaration

  1563. where

  1564. he

  1565. said

  1566. to

  1567. his

  1568. disciples

  1569. let

  1570. us

  1571. go

  1572. so

  1573. that

  1574. we

  1575. may

  1576. die

  1577. with

  1578. him

  1579. became

  1580. a

  1581. truthful

  1582. reality

  1583. in

  1584. his

  1585. life.

  1586. He

  1587. put

  1588. his

  1589. life

  1590. on

  1591. his

  1592. line

  1593. this

  1594. time.

  1595. He

  1596. didn't

  1597. run

  1598. away.

  1599. He

  1600. put

  1601. his

  1602. life

  1603. on

  1604. his

  1605. line

  1606. on

  1607. the

  1608. line

  1609. because

  1610. he

  1611. had

  1612. absolutely

  1613. no

  1614. doubts

  1615. that

  1616. Jesus

  1617. was

  1618. alive.

  1619. Thomas

  1620. makes a

  1621. declaration

  1622. but there

  1623. is another

  1624. declaration

  1625. made here

  1626. in this

  1627. passage.

  1628. The

  1629. risen

  1630. Lord

  1631. Jesus

  1632. pronounces

  1633. a

  1634. blessing

  1635. upon

  1636. everyone

  1637. who

  1638. believes

  1639. in

  1640. Jesus

  1641. Christ

  1642. without

  1643. having

  1644. to see

  1645. him.

  1646. And it

  1647. is a

  1648. blessing

  1649. because

  1650. it was

  1651. the

  1652. Lord

  1653. delights

  1654. to see

  1655. men,

  1656. women,

  1657. boys and

  1658. girls

  1659. turning

  1660. to the

  1661. Lord

  1662. Jesus

  1663. and

  1664. trusting

  1665. in

  1666. the

  1667. resurrected

  1668. Lord.

  1669. Believing

  1670. what the

  1671. gospel of

  1672. John

  1673. has written

  1674. about

  1675. him.

  1676. With

  1677. the result

  1678. is

  1679. that you

  1680. may have

  1681. life

  1682. in his

  1683. name.

  1684. God

  1685. yes

  1686. doubting

  1687. Thomas

  1688. is a

  1689. lesson

  1690. to each

  1691. of us

  1692. to

  1693. faithfully

  1694. trust in

  1695. the Lord

  1696. Jesus

  1697. Christ

  1698. but it's

  1699. maybe

  1700. significant

  1701. that it

  1702. follows

  1703. after what

  1704. we

  1705. consider

  1706. in the

  1707. morning.

  1708. Jesus

  1709. came to

  1710. them

  1711. with

  1712. a

  1713. work

  1714. he was

  1715. handing

  1716. over his

  1717. work

  1718. to them

  1719. and it's

  1720. funny

  1721. that they're

  1722. still in

  1723. the locked

  1724. room

  1725. at this

  1726. point.

  1727. Eight days

  1728. later they

  1729. haven't

  1730. moved

  1731. even after

  1732. Jesus

  1733. came with

  1734. his peace

  1735. his purpose

  1736. and his

  1737. power to

  1738. them.

  1739. I think

  1740. the disciples

  1741. see themselves

  1742. in Thomas.

  1743. they haven't

  1744. moved from

  1745. where they

  1746. have been

  1747. after Jesus

  1748. has said

  1749. to them

  1750. I'm

  1751. sending

  1752. you.

  1753. Are they

  1754. doubting

  1755. that they

  1756. are able

  1757. to do

  1758. the work

  1759. and continue

  1760. the work

  1761. that Jesus

  1762. has asked

  1763. of them

  1764. that we

  1765. considered

  1766. in the

  1767. morning?

  1768. It's

  1769. hard to

  1770. see

  1771. but I

  1772. think

  1773. there's

  1774. a measure

  1775. of

  1776. something

  1777. there

  1778. a lesson

  1779. for the

  1780. disciples

  1781. also

  1782. not to

  1783. doubt

  1784. believe

  1785. what the

  1786. Lord Jesus

  1787. has said

  1788. to them

  1789. that he

  1790. has sent

  1791. them

  1792. and that

  1793. he has

  1794. sent them

  1795. with a

  1796. helper

  1797. to go

  1798. with them

  1799. into this

  1800. world.

  1801. So what

  1802. about us

  1803. tonight?

  1804. What about

  1805. each or

  1806. one of

  1807. us

  1808. tonight?

  1809. Do we

  1810. feel like

  1811. we've

  1812. missed out

  1813. on the

  1814. proclamation

  1815. of the

  1816. gospel?

  1817. Do we

  1818. feel like

  1819. we've

  1820. missed out

  1821. on seeing

  1822. Jesus?

  1823. Well if

  1824. we do

  1825. come to

  1826. where he

  1827. reveals himself

  1828. with the

  1829. people and

  1830. keep coming

  1831. faithfully.

  1832. Do not

  1833. disbelieve.

  1834. Believe that

  1835. he will

  1836. show himself

  1837. to you

  1838. and I

  1839. believe that

  1840. he will

  1841. if you

  1842. do it

  1843. with

  1844. diligence

  1845. and a

  1846. heart that

  1847. is seeking

  1848. and longing

  1849. to know

  1850. him.

  1851. What will

  1852. you be

  1853. declaring

  1854. for all

  1855. eternity?

  1856. Yes we

  1857. have doubts.

  1858. Jesus

  1859. promises to

  1860. deliver us

  1861. but what

  1862. will be

  1863. our

  1864. declaration?

  1865. Will it

  1866. be my

  1867. Lord and

  1868. my God?

  1869. will it

  1870. be I

  1871. wish I

  1872. had

  1873. received

  1874. what the

  1875. Christian

  1876. has.

  1877. I wish

  1878. I had

  1879. joined

  1880. with the

  1881. people of

  1882. God.

  1883. I wish

  1884. I had

  1885. received

  1886. his blessing.

  1887. I pray

  1888. that we

  1889. have

  1890. understanding

  1891. of these

  1892. things

  1893. and that

  1894. he would

  1895. help us

  1896. in our

  1897. doubts

  1898. and help

  1899. us in

  1900. our

  1901. disbelief.

  1902. I pray

  1903. these

  1904. thoughts

  1905. blessed

  1906. to each

  1907. of us.

  1908. We'll

  1909. conclude by

  1910. singing in

  1911. Psalm 133

  1912. in the

  1913. Scottish

  1914. Psalter

  1915. version

  1916. that you'll

  1917. find on

  1918. page

  1919. 424.

  1920. Psalm

  1921. 133

  1922. you'll

  1923. find out

  1924. on page

  1925. 424

  1926. of the

  1927. blue

  1928. praise

  1929. book.

  1930. A

  1931. psalm

  1932. that

  1933. speaks

  1934. about

  1935. the

  1936. blessing

  1937. of the

  1938. Lord

  1939. pouring

  1940. down

  1941. upon

  1942. the

  1943. people

  1944. as they

  1945. gather

  1946. together.

  1947. The

  1948. Lord's

  1949. people,

  1950. the

  1951. brethren,

  1952. behold

  1953. how good

  1954. a thing

  1955. it is

  1956. and how

  1957. becoming

  1958. well.

  1959. Together

  1960. such as

  1961. brethren

  1962. are in

  1963. unity

  1964. to dwell.

  1965. Like

  1966. precious

  1967. ointment

  1968. on the

  1969. head

  1970. that down

  1971. the beard

  1972. did flow,

  1973. even

  1974. Aaron's

  1975. beard

  1976. and to

  1977. the

  1978. skirts

  1979. did

  1980. off his

  1981. garments

  1982. go,

  1983. as

  1984. Herman's

  1985. Jew,

  1986. the Jew

  1987. that

  1988. doth

  1989. on Zion

  1990. hill

  1991. descends,

  1992. for

  1993. there

  1994. the

  1995. blessing

  1996. God

  1997. commands,

  1998. life

  1999. that

  2000. shall

  2001. never

  2002. end.

  2003. We'll

  2004. stand to

  2005. sing

  2006. these

  2007. words

  2008. to

  2009. God's

  2010. praise,

  2011. behold

  2012. how

  2013. good

  2014. thing

  2015. thing

  2016. it is

  2017. and

  2018. how

  2019. becoming

  2020. well.

  2021. Behold

  2022. how

  2023. good

  2024. a

  2025. thing

  2026. is

  2027. and

  2028. how

  2029. become

  2030. we

  2031. well

  2032. he

  2033. joy

2034. Like precious ointment on the head, that devil here did go.

2035. He made us dear and to the stars, give up his charred soul.

2036. How terrible to the dew that dove, on side of hills we sang.

2037. For there the blessing of all man, my path shall never end.

  2038. We conclude with prayer.

2039. Our Lord and our God, we pray that we would keep our focus on you.

2040. That we would not be distracted by the doubts of our hearts.

2041. That you would help us in our doubts and unbelief.

2042. And that we would see the risen Lord Jesus.

2043. That you would reveal yourself to us.

2044. And that we may proclaim, my Lord and my God.

2045. Be with us as we part.

2046. Watch over us in the wake ahead.

2047. Go before us, we pray.

  2048. In Jesus' name.

  2049. Amen.

  2050. Amen.

  2051. Amen.

  2052. Amen.

  2053. Amen.

  2054. Amen.

  2055. Amen.

  2056. Amen.

  2057. Amen.

  2058. Amen.

  2059. Amen.

  2060. Amen.
