  1. We'll begin our worship by singing together in Psalm 25 in the Scottish Psalter version.

  2. We'll find that on page 231 of the Blue Praise Book.

  3. Psalm 25, Scottish Psalter, the first version, and singing there from verse 4 to verse 10.

  4. Words that may be familiar to us, words that teach us to follow Jesus, follow the words that are set before us in the Bible, that we'll be taught by them.

  5. Which will be a theme that we'll have considered in our sermon.

  6. The words there are,

  7. We'll sing from verse 4 down to verse 10.

  8. We'll stand to sing,

  9. Show me thy ways, O Lord, thy paths, O teach thou me.

  10. Amen.

  11. Show me thy ways, O Lord, thy paths, O teach thou me.

  12. Father, thy paths, O teach thou me.

  13. Let in my teaching be.

  14. For thou art, O thoughtless,

  15. Do ye shall be ye shall send.

  16. And I am only all the day,

  17. Expecting to attend.

  18. Thy tender mercy, O Lord,

  19. I may be to remember.

  20. And loving thy kindnesses for thee,

  21. Have ye of hope forever.

  22. My sins and faults of truth,

  23. Do thou art, O Lord, forget.

  24. After thy mercy,

  25. Have ye of me,

  26. And for thy goodness paid.

  27. God, who shall not be,

  28. Thou mayest,

  29. Thou mayest,

  30. In her soul.

  31. And for thy heart, O Lord.

  32. And for thy grace, O Lord,

  33. And for thy grace, O Lord,

  34. And for thy grace, O Lord,

  35. The hope has sought the Lord, our true and mercy due.

  36. The hope has sought the Lord, our true and mercy due.

  37. We'll now join together in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  38. Our Heavenly Father, we give thanks that we can gather in this place on your day.

  39. The day where we remember the risen Lord Jesus.

  40. And so as we join together, all different people, all different places.

  41. Lord, we pray that you would speak to us.

  42. We pray that as we sing from your word, as we read from your word.

  43. As we call upon you in prayer and as we meditate upon what you say to us.

  44. We pray that we would hear you speaking to our hearts and to our souls.

  45. That we may be guided by your instruction.

  46. That you may lead us and keep us.

  47. And often we confess that we have gone astray.

  48. There are many faults and failings within us.

  49. But Lord, you welcome us to come.

  50. You tell us to come and draw near to you.

  51. And so let us draw near to you, O Lord.

  52. With reverence and honour.

  53. Mindful of whom we are approaching.

  54. Lord, we pray for our children.

  55. We pray for those that will go through into holiday tweenies.

  56. We pray for those that will lead them.

  57. We pray that you would speak to them also.

  58. We pray that you would teach them likewise.

  59. And guide them in their young lives.

  60. We pray for those who have been at camp.

  61. We pray for camps that are taking place.

  62. And we pray that you would be with the leaders there.

  63. And that you may reveal yourself to them in their young lives.

  64. That you may sow seeds in their hearts at such a young age.

  65. And that in your timing they would grow and flourish.

  66. And bring forth fruit for your glory.

  67. So Lord, we pray as we join together in worship and praise.

  68. That you would be pleased to bless your people.

  69. All this we ask in Jesus' name.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. I'd just like to say a word to the younger ones that are with us.

  73. You may have noticed as you are coming into the building.

  74. There's a few flags tied to the railings.

  75. And if you go into the hall after.

  76. You'll see there will be a few more flags in there too.

  77. That's for next week's holiday club.

  78. And we pray that it will be a time of fun that we have together.

  79. But every country has a flag.

  80. It's what identifies you as a country.

  81. You hold.

  82. I've got a flag here.

  83. It's got lots of different flags in it.

  84. It's still in its packaging.

  85. I hope no one's looking for it.

  86. It was lying on the table in next door.

  87. I was hoping to come out with a flag.

  88. But I've got this one that's got lots of different flags in it.

  89. You see Switzerland there.

  90. There's other ones there that I don't know.

  91. Great Britain's at the top there.

  92. America, Canada.

  93. Korea.

  94. All different flags.

  95. Identify people.

  96. When they go to the Olympic Games that are taking place and have started.

  97. They'll be flying their flag as a team walk in.

  98. It's telling them, this is where we're from.

  99. This is our people.

  100. This is my homeland.

  101. This is my country.

  102. This is my country.

  103. I was thinking about that.

  104. I was wondering, does a Christian have a flag?

  105. We don't have a flag to show the world.

  106. but Jesus says in his word

  107. in the songs of Solomon

  108. God says

  109. his banner over me is love.

  110. The Christian

  111. has his identity

  112. in the love of Jesus.

  113. The Christian's identity

  114. is in love.

  115. The Christian

  116. is from

  117. heaven.

  118. The Christian is going to heaven.

  119. The Christian belongs to their homeland

  120. which is heaven.

  121. And although they don't have a flag

  122. to fly like the countries

  123. of this world

  124. they can fly the flag of love

  125. for Jesus Christ.

  126. And you may know

  127. of grown-ups who are Christians

  128. that speak to you

  129. and love you like no one

  130. else could love you.

  131. Every Christian

  132. is welcomed

  133. into heaven.

  134. Every Christian

  135. is adopted

  136. into that place

  137. that they call home

  138. because Jesus

  139. died for them.

  140. They are adopted

  141. into this place

  142. of love

  143. because Jesus died

  144. in love

  145. for every single

  146. one of us.

  147. We love

  148. as Christians

  149. because Jesus

  150. first loved

  151. us.

  152. And when we go out

  153. into this world

  154. as Christians

  155. we don't have a flag

  156. to fly

  157. with lots of different

  158. colors in it.

  159. we fly the flag

  160. of love.

  161. We love one another.

  162. We love our neighbors.

  163. We help those

  164. who are poor.

  165. We look after those

  166. who are hurting.

  167. we fly the flag

  168. for Jesus

  169. in the way

  170. that we act.

  171. In the love

  172. that we show.

  173. So that people

  174. meet you

  175. and say to you

  176. why does that person

  177. love me so much?

  178. They can say

  179. well it's because

  180. Jesus loved me.

  181. when we go

  182. into the world

  183. fly the flag

  184. for Jesus.

  185. Love

  186. one another.

  187. That people

  188. would come

  189. and love

  190. Jesus too.

  191. So remember that.

  192. Love one another.

  193. Whoever it is

  194. when you

  195. when you're at school

  196. when you're at college

  197. when you grow up

  198. in this world

  199. keep loving

  200. one another.

  201. Keep loving the people

  202. that you don't know.

  203. And when people ask you

  204. why do you love me

  205. like you do?

  206. Tell them

  207. I'm flying the flag

  208. for Jesus

  209. because Jesus

  210. loves me

  211. and Jesus

  212. died for me

  213. on the cross

  214. at Calvary.

  215. So I pray

  216. these thoughts

  217. would be blessed

  218. to all of us.

  219. We'll join together

  220. in saying the Lord's

  221. prayer together.

  222. Our Father

  223. which art in heaven

  224. hallowed

  225. be thy name

  226. thy kingdom

  227. come

  228. thy will

  229. be done

  230. on earth

  231. as it is

  232. in heaven.

  233. Give us this day

  234. our daily bread

  235. and forgive us

  236. our debts

  237. as we

  238. forgive our debtors.

  239. And lead us

  240. not into temptation

  241. but deliver us

  242. from evil

  243. for thine

  244. is the kingdom

  245. the power

  246. and the glory

  247. forever.

  248. Amen.

  249. We'll continue

  250. in our praise

  251. and our worship

  252. by singing

  253. in Psalm 25

  254. of the Sing

  255. Psalms version.

  256. Psalm 25

  257. of the Sing

  258. Psalms version

  259. you'll find that

  260. on page 33

  261. 33.

  262. And for this

  263. Psalm we'll sing

  264. the first verse

  265. and then we'll jump

  266. down to verse

  267. Mark 6

  268. and sing

  269. down to the end

  270. of that Psalm

  271. to verse 9.

  272. So we'll take

  273. verse 1 first

  274. and then we'll jump

  275. down to verse 6.

  276. The words there

  277. are to you

  278. I call

  279. O Lord

  280. my rock

  281. do not be deaf

  282. to my loud cry

  283. I'll be like those

  284. gone down to death

  285. if you are silent

  286. in reply.

  287. And then at verse 6

  288. Praise to the Lord

  289. for he has heard

  290. the plea for mercy

  291. which I made

  292. he is my strength

  293. he is my shield

  294. I trust in him

  295. who sends me aid

  296. my heart uplifted

  297. leaps for joy

  298. my thanks to him

  299. I gladly sing

  300. The Lord God

  301. is his people's strength

  302. a saving fortress

  303. for his king

  304. Lord save your people

  305. your own flock

  306. be pleased

  307. your heritage

  308. to bless

  309. be their good shepherd

  310. carry them

  311. forever

  312. in your faithfulness.

  313. We'll sing these

  314. verses to God's praise

  315. and while we sing

  316. the children

  317. going to holiday

  318. twenties will come out.

  319. So we'll stand to sing

  320. To you I call

  321. O Lord my rock

  322. to love the end

  323. to my love

  324. I use...

  325. is the Lord glory

  326. for all the eis

  327. to the son who are

  328. our service

  329. and war

  330. the ends

  331. on ourчик

  332. we sing

  333. of risk

  334. and the Holz

  335. and the hives

  336. in our life

  337. to bring our eyes

  338. to even

  339. to the rebel

  340. confusing

  341. and host

  342. down to the likeness

  343. alone and staff

  344. the て if you are silent

  345. Praise to the Lord for the matter,

  346. Love thee forever to which I am.

  347. He is my strength, he is my shield,

  348. Iは let him never change me in,

  349. My heart of there be for joy,

  350. I allow me to consist.

  351. The Lord's body is in the same

  352. As taking our prayer for his king

  353. Lord, Savior, leave a new

  354. Throne of the Lord's body

  355. Lord, Savior, leave a new

  356. As taking our prayer for his king

  357. Lord, Savior, leave a new

  358. And we'll turn now to read from Scripture

  359. We'll have two readings this morning

  360. And our first reading will be from the Gospel of Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  361. Chapter 5, the beginning of that chapter

  362. And afterwards we'll turn to John chapter 21

    John 21 chapter mention

  363. So firstly, the Gospel of Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  364. Chapter 5, from the beginning of that chapter

  365. Down to verse 14

  366. Sorry, down to verse 11

  367. Let us hear God's word

  368. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him

  369. That's Jesus, to hear the word of God

  370. He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret

  371. And he saw two boats by the lake

  372. But the fishermen had gone out of them

  373. And were washing their nets

  374. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's

  375. He asked him to put out a little from the land

  376. And he sat down

  377. And he taught the people from the boat

  378. And when he had finished speaking

  379. He said to Simon

  380. Put out into the deep

  381. And let down your nets for a catch

  382. And Simon answered

  383. Master, we toiled all night and took nothing

  384. But at your word

  385. I will let down the nets

  386. And when they had done this

  387. They enclosed a large number of fish

  388. And their nets were breaking

  389. They signalled to their partners in the other boat

  390. To come and help them

  391. And they came and filled both the boats

  392. So that they began to sink

  393. But when Simon Peter saw it

  394. He fell down at Jesus' knees

  395. Saying, depart from me

  396. For I am a sinful man, O Lord

  397. For he and all who were with him

  398. Were astonished at the catch of fish

  399. That they had taken

  400. And so also were James and John

  401. Sons of Zebedee

  402. Who were partners with Simon

  403. And Jesus said to Simon

  404. Do not be afraid

  405. From now on

  406. You will be catching men

  407. And when they had brought

  408. Their boats to land

  409. They left everything

  410. And followed him

  411. Let's now turn to the Gospel of John

    John 21 chapter mention

  412. Chapter 21

  413. Again we'll read from the beginning

  414. Of that chapter

  415. There's a resurrection appearance

  416. Of Jesus

  417. To the disciples

  418. On the shore

  419. Chapter 21

  420. Verse 1

  421. After this

  422. Jesus revealed himself

  423. Again to the disciples

  424. By the sea of Tiberias

  425. When he revealed himself

  426. In this way

  427. Simon Peter

  428. Thomas called the twin

  429. Nathaniel of Cana and Galilee

  430. The sons of Zebedee

  431. And two others of his disciples

  432. Were together

  433. Simon Peter

  434. Simon Peter said to them

  435. I am going fishing

  436. They said to him

  437. We will go with you

  438. They went out

  439. And got into the boat

  440. But that night

  441. They caught nothing

  442. Just as day was breaking

  443. Jesus stood on the shore

  444. Yet the disciples

  445. Did not know

  446. That it was Jesus

  447. Jesus said to them

  448. Children

  449. Do you have any fish?

  450. They answered him

  451. No

  452. He said to them

  453. Cast the net

  454. On the right side

  455. Of the boat

  456. And you will find some

  457. So they cast it

  458. And now they were not able

  459. To haul it in

  460. Because of the quantity

  461. Of fish

  462. That disciple

  463. Whom Jesus loved

  464. Therefore said to Peter

  465. It is the Lord

  466. When Simon Peter

  467. He heard that it was the Lord

  468. He put on his outer garment

  469. For he was stripped for work

  470. And threw himself

  471. Into the sea

  472. The other disciples

  473. Came in the boat

  474. Dragging the net

  475. Full of fish

  476. For they were not

  477. Far from the land

  478. But about a hundred yards off

  479. When they got out

  480. On land

  481. They saw a charcoal fire

  482. In place

  483. With fish laid out

  484. On it

  485. And bread

  486. Jesus said to them

  487. Bring some of the fish

  488. That you have just caught

  489. So Simon Peter

  490. Went aboard

  491. And hauled the net ashore

  492. Full of large fish

  493. A hundred and fifty three

  494. Of them

  495. And altogether

  496. There were so many

  497. The net was not torn

  498. Jesus said to them

  499. Come and have breakfast

  500. Now none of the disciples

  501. Dared ask him

  502. Who are you?

  503. They knew

  504. It was the Lord Jesus

  505. They knew it was

  506. The Lord Jesus

  507. Came and took the bread

  508. And gave it to them

  509. And so with the fish

  510. This was now

  511. The third time

  512. That Jesus was revealed

  513. To the disciples

  514. After he was raised

  515. From the dead

  516. Amen

  517. May the reading

  518. Of God's word

  519. Be blessed

  520. To those who have

  521. Heard it

  522. This day

  523. Let us join together

  524. Again in prayer

  525. Let us pray

  526. Our Father in heaven

  527. As we come near to you

  528. And draw near to you

  529. And read your word

  530. We pray that we would

  531. Have a mind upon you

  532. That is not distracted

  533. That is not led to and fro

  534. By the thoughts of this world

  535. And we pray that as we come

  536. To this passage

  537. And your resurrection appearance

  538. To the disciples

  539. We would learn from it

  540. And that you would teach us

  541. From your word

  542. Lord we pray that you would

  543. Humble us

  544. As we come before you

  545. And we acknowledge

  546. That we come before

  547. The Lord God almighty

  548. The creator of all

  549. And the sustainer

  550. Of our very lives

  551. That we would humble ourselves

  552. And be reverent

  553. To worship you

  554. And give you

  555. All glory

  556. Honor

  557. And praise

  558. And as we do so

  559. Drawing together

  560. As your people

  561. As different families

  562. From around the surrounding area

  563. Visitors that are here with us

  564. We pray that we would know

  565. The power of your spirit over us

  566. Guiding us

  567. In our understanding

  568. Helping us to see

  569. And see Jesus in a new light

  570. That we would be taught

  571. From his words

  572. That our ears would be unblocked

  573. To hear something new

  574. And fresh this morning

  575. That you would continue

  576. To instruct us

  577. And guide us

  578. As the good shepherd

  579. In our lives

  580. That we as your flock

  581. Would continually draw near

  582. To be gathered together

  583. But to be ultimately

  584. To rely on you

  585. To follow you

  586. To go with you

  587. To where you will lead us

  588. And so

  589. Lead us with your promises

  590. O Lord

  591. In our lives

  592. Let us hold fast

  593. To the promises

  594. That we have

  595. That you go

  596. And prepare a place

  597. For your people

  598. That you will hear

  599. Our prayers

  600. That you will not

  601. Forsake us

  602. So many

  603. That we can hold fast

  604. On to

  605. Give us confidence

  606. As we do so

  607. That we would not

  608. Disbelieve

  609. But believe

  610. In the risen Lord

  611. Jesus

  612. Who lives

  613. And ever will live

  614. And if we believe

  615. In him

  616. Though we die

  617. Yet we shall live

  618. Lord we pray

  619. That the gospel message

  620. Would be proclaimed

  621. Across this nation

  622. With faithfulness

  623. And you would

  624. Turn your people

  625. Back to you

  626. Knowing

  627. The plight

  628. Of the situation

  629. And where sin

  630. Has left them

  631. Knowing that they

  632. Are in need

  633. Of a saviour

  634. That they are in need

  635. Of being rescued

  636. Knowing that they

  637. Need the Lord

  638. Jesus Christ

  639. In their life

  640. That in him

  641. They can have

  642. Peace and purpose

  643. Lord

  644. Pray that you would

  645. Teach our nation

  646. Teach our

  647. Leaders in government

  648. That they

  649. Would come

  650. And trust in you

  651. And lead

  652. Our nation

  653. Our country

  654. In the ways

  655. Of God

  656. That we would

  657. Fly the flag

  658. For Jesus Christ

  659. And his word

  660. As truth

  661. Lord

  662. We pray

  663. For those

  664. Who proclaim it

  665. We pray

  666. That you would

  667. Give them the power

  668. Of your spirit

  669. We pray

  670. That you would

  671. Bring many more

  672. Men to

  673. Come and

  674. Devote their lives

  675. To you

  676. Consecrate their lives

  677. To the gospel

  678. And not just men

  679. That needed to

  680. Proclaim it

  681. But women

  682. Boys

  683. And girls

  684. That consecrate

  685. Their lives

  686. To the Lord

  687. Jesus Christ

  688. That you would

  689. Give them

  690. Understanding

  691. In their hearts

  692. That they would

  693. Cry out

  694. Knowing

  695. To whom else

  696. Can we go

  697. So let us

  698. Come

  699. And sit at the

  700. Feet of the

  701. Lord Jesus

  702. This morning

  703. Like Mary did

  704. That we would

  705. Not busy

  706. Ourselves

  707. Like Martha

  708. And lose out

  709. On teaching

  710. But give us

  711. Peace in our

  712. Hearts

  713. As we come

  714. To your word

  715. We pray for

  716. Our people

  717. That we know

  718. That are

  719. Finding life

  720. Difficult

  721. That are

  722. Anxious over

  723. Their health

  724. That are facing

  725. Great changes

  726. In the future

  727. People that are

  728. Mourning

  729. We pray that you

  730. Would draw near

  731. To them

  732. For your word

  733. Tells us that you

  734. Are near to the

  735. Broken hearted

  736. And lord

  737. We just pray

  738. That you would

  739. Be our

  740. Guide

  741. Ultimately

  742. In this world

  743. That we would

  744. Come back

  745. To your words

  746. That we have

  747. In scripture

  748. That we would

  749. Understand them

  750. As truth

  751. And instruction

  752. For us to

  753. Follow

  754. Be with us now

  755. As we come

  756. To your word

  757. And consider it

  758. Guide us

  759. And keep us

  760. From the evil

  761. One

  762. And all this

  763. We ask in the name

  764. Of the lord

  765. Jesus Christ

  766. Amen

  767. We'll continue

  768. In our praise

  769. Before we come

  770. Back to the

  771. Passage

  772. In John

    John 21 chapter mention

  773. Chapter 21

  774. And we'll sing

  775. In Psalm

  776. 145

  777. Of the

  778. Sing

  779. Psalms

  780. Version

  781. You'll find

  782. That on page

  783. 190

  784. For time

  785. I think

  786. If it's okay

  787. We'll just

  788. Sing from

  789. Verse Mark

  790. 17

  791. To 21

  792. 17

  793. The lord

  794. Is just

  795. And good

  796. In all his

  797. Ways

  798. He shows

  799. His love

  800. To all

  801. That he

  802. Has made

  803. The lord

  804. Is near

  805. To all

  806. Who call

  807. On him

  808. To all

  809. Who call

  810. In truth

  811. To him

  812. For aid

  813. We'll sing

  814. These last

  815. Three

  816. Verses

  817. To god's

  818. Praise

  819. We'll stand

  820. To sing

  821. The lord

  822. Is just

  823. And good

  824. In all

  825. His ways

  826. The lord

  827. Is just

  828. And good

  829. In all

  830. His ways

  831. The Lord

  832. Is just

  833. And good

  834. In all

  835. His ways

  836. The lord

  837. Is just

  838. The lord

  839. Is here

  840. To all

  841. Who call

  842. Him

  843. To all

  844. Who call

  845. Him

  846. To

  847. Him

  848. Come

  849. And good

  850. God

  851. The Lord protects all those who love His name,

  852. A special to knock His wickedness.

  853. Thy lips will fade as some of the plans to go,

  854. I will be forever in His face.

  855. Let every preacher magnify the Lord,

  856. And may still slowly live now and always.

  857. I will turn back to the passage that we have read there in John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  858. I am reading there at verse 7.

  859. The last few times that I have been with you here and preached with you,

  860. We have looked at the importance and the impact of the resurrection appearances of the Lord Jesus in the Gospel of John.

  861. We have looked at the account of Mary.

  862. We have looked at the disciples in the locked room.

  863. We have looked at the account where he appeared to Dante and Thomas.

  864. And now this is the fourth appearance that John records.

  865. This is the appearance on the Shoah.

  866. And chapter 21 in John's Gospel is the conclusion.

  867. This is his final sign of.

  868. This is the last thing he has to say to the reader.

  869. We have this closing purpose at the end of chapter 20,

  870. Where he says he has written all these things so that you may believe in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  871. And have life in His name.

  872. But he has got one last thing to say.

  873. He has got one last thing to write.

  874. In order to believe.

  875. He has got one last thing for you to hear this morning.

  876. And the restoration of Peter falls through in this chapter and forms an important part of this chapter.

  877. But John clearly segregates this resurrection appearance in the way he writes.

  878. John wants you to notice this appearance of Jesus.

  879. You look at verse 21.

  880. He starts off by saying,

  881. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias.

  882. He revealed himself in this way.

  883. He's emphasizing this revelation.

  884. And then at verse 14, he breaks it and says,

  885. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  886. The third time he revealed himself to the whole of the disciples.

  887. The gathered disciples.

  888. So what's the significance of this passage?

  889. What does John want us to notice?

  890. Because John is the only writer that records this passage.

  891. And if he wants us to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, why is he recording this?

  892. Well, Jesus is distancing himself from the people.

  893. Jesus cannot stay in the world any longer.

  894. His appearances seem to become less frequent.

  895. Jesus cannot stay in the world.

  896. Jesus cannot stay in the world.

  897. He's instructing them how to live their lives without him.

  898. So the disciples are here.

  899. Thankfully, they're not in the locked room anymore.

  900. They've opened the door.

  901. They've faced the world.

  902. They've faced whatever doubts they had in their hearts.

  903. They've placed their trust in the Lord's words.

  904. And I am sending you, as we have seen previously.

  905. But we see them here.

  906. They've gone out.

  907. But they seem to be a bit lost.

  908. They seem to be struggling to figure out what the next steps are in their lives.

  909. And as we look at this passage here, there are three expressions that really shape this appearance.

  910. And the first of these expressions that are said by the character Peter is,

  911. I am going fishing.

  912. The first thing to consider.

  913. What Peter says, I am going fishing.

  914. I'm sure there are many men in here that have exclaimed that.

  915. I am going fishing.

  916. Whether it's out of frustrations or maybe just to get a break.

  917. But how does Peter say it?

  918. He's speaking to the disciples there, those that are with him.

  919. And there's seven of them there.

  920. The passage lists them at the beginning.

  921. They're at the Sea of Tiberias.

  922. This is also the Sea of Gennesaret, that we read of in Luke 5.

  923. It is also the Sea of Galilee.

  924. It's the same place with three different names.

  925. Peter is here saying, I am going fishing to the seven disciples that are with him.

  926. And you might ask, well, why are they here at the Sea of Galilee?

  927. What has left them here?

  928. Well, if you look at the other Gospels, Jesus tells them to go to Galilee.

  929. You'll find that in Matthew 26 and Mark 16.

  930. He instructs the disciples, I'll see you again at Galilee.

  931. So the disciples here, they're on the right path.

  932. They're doing the right thing at this moment in time.

  933. And for these fishermen to return to Galilee, it would have been natural for them to return

  934. to their place in where they had worked.

  935. They would have probably delighted to come back to that place that they had left,

  936. to come back to the shore of the Sea of Galilee,

  937. to come back and see the people whom they were familiar with,

  938. to come back and tell them all that they had seen.

  939. But as they come back, they start going off course.

  940. They start to wander back into their old way of life.

  941. You can just imagine, you can almost see them there, these seven men,

  942. sitting at the banks of the shore, wondering, what are we going to do next?

  943. Jesus has told us to come here.

  944. What's next?

  945. They have no real plan set before them.

  946. They don't really know how to carry out the work of Jesus

  947. and how to continue it.

  948. They fall back into their old work.

  949. You can see them just sitting on the shore,

  950. watching all the other fishermen heading out to a night of work.

  951. That was the most opportune time for catching fish.

  952. Peter's just sitting there, and you can just see impulsive Peter just exclaiming,

  953. I'm going fishing.

  954. Whether it was for food, whether it was just for something for him to do, we don't know.

  955. But he's off.

  956. And others say, we will go with you.

  957. And the end of verse 3 sums up that endeavour that they went on.

  958. They went out, they got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  959. They all followed Peter back into their old way of life, back to fishing.

  960. And surely deep down within themselves they knew fine that Jesus had not sent them to Galilee

  961. to go back to being fishermen.

  962. From day dot when Jesus had called them, as we saw in Luke 5,

  963. he called them to be fishers of men, to leave the fishing boat.

  964. They're at exactly the same place in which he first called them.

  965. But Peter here leads them astray.

  966. He leads them back into their old lives.

  967. They maybe think this is the best thing to do.

  968. And the disciples all follow the wrong voice.

  969. And this is a point that we must all come back to again and again in our lives.

  970. Personally asking ourselves, who am I following?

  971. Am I following my own voice?

  972. Am I following what I think is best?

  973. Am I following someone else?

  974. People in this world chase after having followers online.

  975. They want to have as many people following them.

  976. But what are they saying?

  977. What are these people doing?

  978. Who are we following in our lives?

  979. And truth be told, it can look far more attractive than following what Jesus has set aside for us.

  980. Because the devil will tempt you.

  981. Certainly tempt you.

  982. To divert you from following Jesus at all.

  983. You read Pilgrim's Progress and you see Christian there and the battles he had.

  984. Trying to follow the path that was set out for him and follow the light.

  985. And they're diverting and they're getting themselves into all different trouble.

  986. The devil will tempt us away with things that look attractive and things that look easy in this life.

  987. But who are you following?

  988. And where is that person taking you?

  989. Tomorrow?

  990. In the week ahead?

  991. In the year ahead?

  992. Into eternity?

  993. Who are you following?

  994. This is a lesson here to keep following the right voice.

  995. To keep reminding the disciples here.

  996. Listen to my words and remember my words that I taught you.

  997. Follow me.

  998. Do not follow man.

  999. Do not return into your old ways even when they do look attractive to you.

1000. Be faithful to me and what I have called you to.

1001. It's even evident when you go through this chapter.

1002. You can read it in your own time.

1003. Jesus says to the disciples when they're questioning and asking one another what will happen to them.

1004. Jesus says, what is that to you?

  1005. You follow me.

  1006. Who are we following?

1007. These seven disciples went out into the sea of Galilee with great efforts, with great diligence.

1008. We learn from this passage that they fished all night long and now day is breaking.

1009. Peter was stripped naked, making every attempt to succeed in the work that he wants to do.

  1010. But he's getting nowhere.

  1011. They've got nothing.

  1012. They're exhausted.

  1013. They're tired.

  1014. They're empty handed.

1015. But Jesus stands at a distance on the shore.

1016. The disciples could not make out who he was.

1017. And we have this conversation recorded between them.

1018. And he addresses them as children in verse 5.

1019. Do you have any fish?

1020. And they say that this address as children is more like an informal address to shout lads or guys.

1021. Guys, do you have any fish?

  1022. Fish.

1023. But if you go to the Greek, it puts a different slant on that phrase.

1024. It translates really, do you not have any fish?

  1025. There's a negative in it.

1026. That makes a bit of a difference when you're asking someone that.

1027. If I ask you, do you have sweets in your pocket?

  1028. Yeah, I've got sweets.

1029. It's like, do you not have any sweets in your pocket?

1030. You know, the second one with a negative in it, it's like, you're not expecting it.

1031. Do you not have any sweets in your pocket?

1032. It's implying you've got nothing in your pocket.

1033. Jesus is speaking to them, asking them, guys, do you not have any fish?

1034. And when he says fish, it's not even a full fish.

1035. It is the smallest bit of fish that you could imagine.

1036. Do you not have anything at all?

  1037. He's asking them.

  1038. And they say, nothing.

1039. As a fisherman returning to port with absolutely nothing is embarrassing.

1040. And Jesus is asking them to admit their complete failure.

1041. We don't have a bean to show for all the work that we have done.

1042. You see, what following the wrong man left them with?

  1043. Nothing.

  1044. Absolutely nothing.

1045. So it's a lesson for us to consider who we are following,

1046. and what we will be left with when we follow.

  1047. We must follow Jesus.

  1048. We must follow Jesus.

1049. So that at the end of our day, we'll not be left empty.

1050. You can exhaust yourself chasing after the things of this world,

1051. trying to gather as much as you can.

1052. But at the end of the day, what's it going to give you?

  1053. Nothing.

  1054. Follow Jesus.

1055. The second phrase that I want us to consider is,

1056. it is the Lord, in verse 7.

1057. This is a phrase that John exclaims to Peter when he recognizes,

1058. it must be the Lord.

1059. He says, it is the Lord to Peter.

1060. Have you ever thought how you would react if someone said that to you?

1061. And someone said, if you were about your day-to-day work,

1062. and someone said to you, it's the Lord.

  1063. The Lord is here.

  1064. The Lord has come.

1065. On the day when the Lord will come, people will exclaim that.

1066. When it is, we do not know.

1067. But we must consider how we will react when the Lord does come.

1068. And it is interesting that when you come back to this passage,

1069. and you see how the Lord Jesus is revealed to them,

1070. it is not made by his voice, as it was to Mary.

1071. It is not made by his sight, as it was to the disciples.

1072. But it is made by his work, and what Jesus does for them.

1073. And in our lives, we desire to see Jesus in the flesh.

1074. We wish we could hear his voice speaking to us so clearly.

1075. But it is often his hands at work that enables us to say, it is the Lord.

1076. Because Jesus is unnoticed in this passage.

1077. Which is interesting, because the disciples have already met him twice already.

1078. And when you go to verse 12, they are sitting with Jesus on the shore.

1079. The disciples dare not ask him, who are you?

1080. Jesus doesn't seem immediately obvious to them.

1081. They have a question in their mind.

  1082. Who is this man?

  1083. But they know fine.

1084. Deep down, it is really Jesus.

1085. There seems to be something different about his appearance.

1086. And if anything from this, it is Jesus instructing them to not rely on the visual.

1087. Thomas was there in this group.

1088. Thomas was the doctor that said, I will not believe unless I see him and touch him.

  1089. But Jesus is...

1090. Jesus' identity isn't so clear here.

1091. We can't say exactly why, but we don't know.

  1092. He is hidden.

1093. He said, don't rely so much on the visual and my appearances.

1094. I will be with you.

1095. I will continue with you.

1096. But you will see me in the works that I do.

1097. You won't physically see me.

1098. You won't audibly hear my voice.

1099. And that work that he told them to do was to cast the net on the right side of the boat.

1100. And it kind of sounds ridiculous for them to do.

1101. They have been fishing all night.

1102. They have not cost anything.

1103. Jesus gives them a promise to that word.

  1104. You will find some.

1105. It emphasizes their complete inability, I think, that they listened to this man and they did not question it.

1106. Like they did in Luke's Gospel.

1107. He questioned, we've toiled all night.

1108. But they're here with nothing.

1109. They've got nothing else to try.

1110. This stranger saying, cast your net on the right side.

  1111. Well, let's give it a go.

1112. What other options do we have?

  1113. Time is running out.

1114. They try it and they receive a net full of fish.

  1115. Time is running out.

1116. What option do they have?

1117. To whom else can they go to?

  1118. We must follow Jesus.

1119. What other option do you have?

1120. Are time is running out?

  1121. John is the first.

  1122. John is the first.

1123. He has to put two and two together.

1124. Maybe he remembers that account in Luke.

1125. And when he says it is the Lord impulsive Peter jumps straight into the sea.

1126. But before he does that, he puts on an outer garment.

1127. Which is a strange thing to do if you're going to go swimming.

1128. To put on a jacket, a coat, a covering.

1129. But it is believed that he did this because he didn't want to appear before the Lord in his nakedness.

  1130. In his shame.

1131. He came before the Lord Jesus with reverence when he knew it was him.

1132. And we must come before the Lord with reverence as well.

1133. In Luke 5, when Jesus was revealed in the catching of the fish, Peter said,

  1134. Depart from me.

1135. He realized who he was before the Lord.

1136. And we must realize who we are when we see the Lord in our lives.

  1137. It is the Lord.

1138. And the final saying that shapes this passage is,

  1139. Come and have breakfast.

  1140. I am going fishing.

  1141. It is the Lord.

1142. Finally, come and have breakfast.

1143. This is a great phrase to hear if anyone ever says it to you.

1144. You're lucky enough to get that offer.

  1145. Come and have breakfast.

1146. Come, it's provided for you.

1147. Come and enjoy it with me.

1148. This is what Jesus is saying to them.

1149. I will provide for you.

1150. And you will come and be with me.

1151. And although there was fish on the fire already prepared for them,

1152. he tells them to bring something of what they have.

1153. And though these disciples went off track, they went back into their old ways in life,

1154. probably knowing themselves the foolishness of what they are doing.

1155. We know you didn't call us to be fishermen.

1156. Jesus used this lesson to feed them, to instruct them, to guide them.

1157. They themselves were nourished by the results of their own mistakes.

1158. It was used for their own building up.

1159. Jesus cannot stay with them.

1160. But they find a lesson in the works of Jesus in their lives.

1161. And I'm sure there are many of us here who have seen Jesus work in our lives and have learned great lessons from it.

1162. You can look back in your life, and it's often when you do look back,

1163. and you say to yourself, well, it was the Lord.

  1164. The Lord was there.

1165. But you learn from it.

1166. And maybe it was that you had made a mistake in doing so.

1167. You look back and the Lord has restored you and taken you and guided you.

  1168. It's a lesson for the future.

1169. Now, we can't see him physically.

1170. We can't hear him audibly.

1171. But he is at work in your life.

1172. The Lord Jesus is at work.

1173. Maybe you have to look back to when he first called you.

1174. That's what he did with the disciples here.

1175. He took them right back to where he first called them,

1176. to be fishers of men.

1177. And they learned a lesson from it.

1178. To trust in the words of Jesus Christ.

  1179. To follow him.

1180. Not to try and earn things for themselves.

1181. For Jesus will provide for them.

1182. And often we do not know how Jesus will provide for us.

1183. Often we have to, often we go, often we make the mistake of trying to do it all ourselves.

1184. But Jesus went before them.

1185. There was fish already on the fire there.

1186. But Jesus used this lesson.

1187. To build them up, to instruct them.

1188. What a catch they had.

  1189. They had 153 fish.

1190. And everyone asks, what does this mean?

  1191. Why 153 fish?

1192. And I don't think anyone really knows.

1193. Everyone's, people have tried in all sorts of mathematical things in order to reach the significance for the 153.

1194. But I think it just simply means that the Lord provided for them abundantly.

1195. And the Lord will provide for you abundantly too.

1196. Whether it be in this life, or certainly will in the next life.

1197. The Lord will provide for you.

1198. And he will welcome you with warmth.

1199. When you come to him today.

1200. And when you are welcomed to be with him.

  1201. In his glory.

  1202. In heaven.

1203. Come and have breakfast with me.

1204. Come and dine with me.

1205. Come and enjoy what I have provided for you.

1206. He has provided for you the most wonderful salvation.

  1207. It is already done.

1208. We must come to him.

1209. We must not resort back to following our old lives.

1210. We must come before the Lord.

1211. That we would see him.

1212. And understand what he has done for us.

  1213. And this passage.

  1214. It's all about fishing.

1215. But it's not really about fishing at all.

1216. It's not really about the success of the catch that they had.

1217. It's a lesson on how to go on in the Christian life.

1218. To trust in him and his words.

1219. To follow Jesus no matter what.

  1220. To honour him.

1221. To trust that he will provide for you.

1222. We all want to be successful in life.

  1223. Success.

  1224. Success.

  1225. Is found in Christ.

1226. True success is found in Christ.

1227. the world will leave you empty.

1228. The world might pat you on your back

  1229. and say you're successful.

  1230. But are you really?

1231. What have you got to show it?

1232. What will you have to show it

1233. when you hear them say it is the Lord?

  1234. Following the world

1235. will leave you empty handed

  1236. but following Christ

1237. will bring an abundance to your life.

1238. He will provide for you.

1239. So let us follow him.

1240. Let us trust in him.

  1241. He is the resurrection

  1242. and the life.

  1243. Do you believe this?

  1244. Amen.

1245. May these thoughts be blessed to us.

1246. We'll conclude by singing in Psalm 23

  1247. of the Scottish Psalter.

1248. Find that on page 229.

  1249. Psalm 23.

1250. Words that are familiar to us.

  1251. Psalm 23.

1252. The psalmist says that the Lord is his shepherd.

  1253. I'll not want.

1254. He makes me lie down in pastures green.

1255. He leadeth me the quiet waters by.

  1256. He also says,

1257. My soul he doth restore again.

1258. And me to walk doth make

1259. within the paths of righteousness.

1260. Here and for his own name's sake.

1261. and yea though I walk in death's dark vale

1262. yet will I fear none ill

1263. for thou art with me and thy rod

1264. and staff me comfort still

1265. my table thou hast furnished

1266. in presence of my foes

1267. my head thou dost with oil anoint

  1268. and my cup overflows

1269. goodness and mercy all my life

  1270. shall surely follow me

1271. and in God's house forevermore

1272. my dwelling place shall be

1273. what a provision by such a shepherd

  1274. that we can follow

1275. let us stand together and sing these words

1276. to God's praise the Lord's my shepherd

  1277. I'll not want

  1278. Lord's my shepherd's name

1279. it makes me down to life

  1280. and pastures be

  1281. he leadeth me

  1282. the quiet water shine

  1283. thy soul be done

  1284. restore again

  1285. and me to hope

  1286. doth may

  1287. within the paths

  1288. of righteousness

  1289. and me to hope

1290. and yea though I walk in death's dark vale

1291. yet will I fear none ill

1292. yet though I walk in death's dark vale

1293. yet will I fear none ill

1294. for thou art with me

  1295. and thy door

1296. and staff me come for still

  1297. thy table

  1298. thy table

  1299. has furnished

  1300. thy table

  1301. has furnished

  1302. shed

  1303. in rest

  1304. of

  1305. thy woes

  1306. my

  1307. end

1308. The Lord with oil and oil

  1309. And my cup overflows

  1310. Goodness and mercy

  1311. All my life

  1312. Shall surely follow me

1313. And in the sun forevermore

1314. My dwelling place shall be

  1315. Concluded prayer

  1316. Lord Jesus

1317. As we depart from one another

1318. We pray that you would be our shepherd

1319. And that we would follow you

1320. Into the uncertainties of this life

1321. Lord we pray that you would correct us

  1322. And provide for us

1323. And that we may see your hand at work within us

1324. So that we may proclaim to one another

  1325. It is the Lord

1326. He is still at work

  1327. He is still alive

  1328. And he still reigns

1329. And will reign eternally forever

1330. May we hold on to the resurrection promises of Jesus

1331. That he has provided life for all who believe in him

1332. So let us believe in the Lord Jesus

1333. Watch over us as we part

1334. Be with us as we gather later in this evening

1335. And may you bless the gathering of your people

  1336. Amen

  1337. Amen

  1338. Oh

  1339. Amen

  1340. Thank you

  1341. Amen

  1342. Thank you.
