  1. 8.

  2. Ephesians 5, verse 8,

    Ephesians 5:8

  3. For at one time you were darkness,

  4. but now you are light in the Lord.

  5. Walk as children of light.

  6. Paul often, as he wrote,

  7. he did so by way of contrasts.

  8. Very often he would say,

  9. reminding Christians,

  10. this is what you once were,

  11. but this is now what you are.

  12. You find that, in fact,

  13. as you go through in Ephesians,

  14. it went back to chapter 2,

  15. we find that you were dead

  16. in trespasses and sins.

  17. You once walked according

  18. to the course of the world.

  19. You were children of wrath,

  20. even us others.

  21. But now, that's what he says in verse 4,

  22. but God being rich in mercy,

  23. where God comes into your life

  24. and changes and transforms it.

  25. Again, in verse 13 of chapter 2,

  26. we have the same idea.

  27. He says,

  28. But now in Christ Jesus,

  29. you who once were far off

  30. have been brought near

  31. by the blood of Christ.

  32. So Paul often works

  33. by these sort of contrasting pictures

  34. of what once we were

  35. and what now we have become.

  36. And it's important for us

  37. to remember that we,

  38. just as it tells us

  39. in this particular verse,

  40. you were,

  41. that's what he says,

  42. for at one time

  43. you were darkness,

  44. but now are light in the Lord.

  45. Not just you were in darkness.

  46. We were in darkness.

  47. But it's deeper than that.

  48. We actually were darkness.

  49. And when you think about it,

  50. that's an awful picture.

  51. And that's how everybody is

  52. without Christ.

  53. That's how we once were.

  54. Darkness.

  55. Not just in darkness,

  56. but darkness.

  57. Darkness.

  58. So before we come to look

  59. at positively,

  60. let us look at first

  61. what we were.

  62. We were in darkness.

  63. And this is, of course,

  64. the darkness of sin.

  65. That's what happened

  66. whenever sin entered into this world.

  67. And it's our,

  68. what we use the expression,

  69. a default position.

  70. It's what we are.

  71. And sadly,

  72. it's what by nature we love.

  73. Because we're told in scripture

  74. that men love darkness

  75. rather than light.

  76. And whether we accepted it or not,

  77. that was our preferred position.

  78. Before we became Christians,

  79. we preferred the darkness.

  80. Yes, there might have been

  81. leanings towards the light.

  82. There might have been

  83. drawings towards the light.

  84. But the bottom line was

  85. darkness was what ruled us

  86. because we were darkness.

  87. And it's not until we come to the light

  88. that we realized just

  89. how dark we actually were.

  90. And this darkness is an awful thing.

  91. Because in that darkness,

  92. there is also

  93. a sense of despondency

  94. and a sense of despair.

  95. People aren't aware of it.

  96. But that's exactly how it is.

  97. And I've seen,

  98. I can still remember,

  99. a couple of occasions

  100. where this was brought

  101. so forcibly home to me.

  102. Where I was visiting people.

  103. And there are two in particular

  104. that come to my mind.

  105. In the last week of their life,

  106. it was not at the same time.

  107. And I was trying to

  108. say a little about Jesus

  109. and didn't want to hear anything.

  110. And I asked,

  111. can I pray with you?

  112. No, don't want prayer.

  113. And what I found so extraordinary is

  114. that there seemed to be just,

  115. there was almost a darkness

  116. you could feel.

  117. And a sense of despair

  118. and despondency.

  119. That didn't want the light

  120. in any shape or form.

  121. And this is part almost

  122. of the mystery of iniquity

  123. where this darkness

  124. wants to go deeper and deeper.

  125. Doesn't want the light

  126. in any shape or form.

  127. And even when you're holding out light,

  128. don't want it.

  129. And it's,

  130. it had a,

  131. it had a real impact upon me,

  132. this sense of

  133. the hopelessness

  134. and the despair

  135. that is in that darkness.

  136. But that's exactly,

  137. these were sort of

  138. where the,

  139. where it was being displayed

  140. in a very clear way.

  141. And what I was thinking was,

  142. just as a Christian

  143. gets little glimpses

  144. of glory along the way,

  145. we get little,

  146. little tears,

  147. we,

  148. we,

  149. we snippets,

  150. as it were,

  151. little touches.

  152. and as we get closer to glory,

  153. our hearts seem to be going there

  154. more and more

  155. to reverse us through

  156. for those out of Christ.

  157. That darkness is beginning

  158. to envelop them

  159. more and more.

  160. The,

  161. the lostness,

  162. the despondency,

  163. the darkness,

  164. because that's what hell

  165. ultimately is,

  166. is outer darkness.

  167. darkness.

  168. And it's an incredibly

  169. solemn thought,

  170. but that,

  171. that is the nature,

  172. that's how we were

  173. before the light.

  174. And it's also a darkness

  175. of ignorance,

  176. because light,

  177. light speaks to us

  178. of knowledge,

  179. of understanding.

  180. And chapter four,

  181. verse 18 tells us,

  182. they are darkened

  183. in their understanding,

  184. alienated from the life

  185. of God,

  186. because of the ignorance

  187. that is in them

  188. due to the hardness

  189. of their heart.

  190. And you know,

  191. it's an awful thing

  192. to have our understanding

  193. darkened by sin.

  194. This ignorance

  195. that is spoken of here

  196. is not the ignorance

  197. of intellect,

  198. because there are many

  199. intellectual giants

  200. in this world

  201. who,

  202. as far as spiritual

  203. understanding is concerned,

  204. have none.

  205. They are in darkness.

  206. In fact,

  207. I'm sure it's the same

  208. with you.

  209. I've had very clever people

  210. tell me when I became

  211. a Christian

  212. to get rid of that nonsense.

  213. That's what,

  214. that was the actual word used.

  215. Clever people,

  216. far smarter

  217. than I ever would be.

  218. But that's because

  219. of this word ignorance,

  220. which is a spiritual blindness

  221. that envelops the mind.

  222. And they actually think,

  223. genuinely think,

  224. that the whole Christian,

  225. that it's foolishness.

  226. But the Bible tells us

  227. that that's exactly

  228. what they think.

  229. Remember how Paul writing elsewhere,

  230. he talks about

  231. the preaching of the gospel,

  232. that for some,

  233. it's a stumbling block,

  234. for others,

  235. it's foolishness.

  236. There are people tonight

  237. who actually would look at you

  238. coming to the prayer meeting

  239. and think,

  240. how foolish is that?

  241. And the reason is

  242. because of the ignorance,

  243. the spiritual ignorance

  244. that is brought about

  245. by the darkness

  246. that has enveloped

  247. their heart

  248. and their mind.

  249. And you know,

  250. it's an incredibly

  251. solemn thing.

  252. And then there's also

  253. the darkness

  254. of the curse.

  255. You see,

  256. there's the curse and sin.

  257. And you remember

  258. how God's judgment

  259. came on Israel.

  260. Remember how the plagues,

  261. and one of the plagues

  262. was darkness.

  263. An incredible darkness

  264. enveloped the land,

  265. the whole land of Egypt

  266. with an exception,

  267. the land of Goshen.

  268. The part of Egypt,

  269. Goshen,

  270. was in light.

  271. That's where God's people were.

  272. The rest of Egypt

  273. was plunged

  274. into the most

  275. extraordinary darkness.

  276. darkness.

  277. And so,

  278. that's where we once were,

  279. under the curse,

  280. because of sin,

  281. ignorant

  282. to the things of God.

  283. But thankfully,

  284. that has changed

  285. because we're told here,

  286. for at one time

  287. you were darkness,

  288. but now

  289. you are light

  290. in the Lord.

  291. And that light

  292. in the Lord,

  293. it brings various things.

  294. The first thing it does,

  295. it brings reconciliation.

  296. When the light

  297. comes into your experience,

  298. and as we know

  299. that the dawning

  300. of the light

  301. can be so different

  302. for different people,

  303. not everybody

  304. is a Saul of Tarshish,

  305. not everybody

  306. has a clear moment

  307. when they know

  308. they've passed

  309. from death to life.

  310. Many people,

  311. as we've often said,

  312. it's like the dawn

  313. of the day.

  314. And if you've ever

  315. been out through the night

  316. and experienced

  317. coming in

  318. from the darkness

  319. and see just that

  320. I've done so

  321. on two or three occasions,

  322. you've been out

  323. through the night

  324. and you just,

  325. you can't say

  326. at any particular moment

  327. now it's light.

  328. There is a particular time

  329. when everything

  330. is dark and black

  331. and then gradually

  332. it moves into

  333. a world of shadows

  334. and then growing shapes

  335. and things,

  336. there's a growing clarity

  337. and eventually

  338. everything becomes clear.

  339. And that's how it is

  340. sometimes

  341. in the spiritual journey

  342. for people.

  343. They can't put

  344. a particular day

  345. or time,

  346. but they do know

  347. that they're on

  348. a spiritual journey

  349. where they were darkness

  350. and now they are light.

  351. And so there is,

  352. this is a great thing

  353. is there is reconciliation

  354. because now

  355. we are at one

  356. with the Lord

  357. and we feel at home

  358. with the Lord.

  359. that's why in Romans

  360. we're saying

  361. now we call him

  362. Abba, Father.

  363. We can go straight

  364. maybe as children

  365. we recited the Lord's Prayer

  366. our Father

  367. which art in heaven

  368. repeated it

  369. knew it of by heart.

  370. But when you become

  371. a Christian

  372. you can say

  373. our Father,

  374. my Father.

  375. Because

  376. you feel this acceptance.

  377. How?

  378. Have you made that

  379. in yourself?

  380. No.

  381. It is the ministry

  382. of the Spirit

  383. assuring us

  384. the Spirit

  385. ministered

  386. to our spirit

  387. that we are

  388. children of God.

  389. And it's one of the

  390. most liberating

  391. experiences

  392. that we have

  393. where we've come

  394. from the darkness

  395. and now we have

  396. this sense of belonging.

  397. We know who we are.

  398. We're family.

  399. We belong to one another.

  400. You remember that

  401. when you became

  402. a Christian?

  403. All of a sudden

  404. there was

  405. you felt one

  406. with your brothers

  407. and sisters.

  408. People you used to see

  409. over there

  410. you didn't really

  411. know them

  412. but all of a sudden

  413. there's this bond

  414. this link

  415. and this is all

  416. through the Spirit

  417. ministering within us

  418. that we are all

  419. children

  420. all family.

  421. We all belong

  422. to the Lord.

  423. And so

  424. this is a wonderful

  425. time

  426. where we're

  427. brought into the light.

  428. You know

  429. you could be out

  430. on a really cold

  431. windy night.

  432. It's really dark.

  433. the wind is howling.

  434. You're going to visit

  435. someone.

  436. It's a good friend

  437. and you're struggling

  438. with the wind.

  439. It's pouring rain.

  440. Everything is dark.

  441. Everything is black.

  442. You reach the door.

  443. The door's locked.

  444. You ring the bell

  445. and knock the door

  446. and they come to the door

  447. and they,

  448. oh, come on in.

  449. And if that's happened

  450. to you

  451. you remember

  452. the warmth,

  453. the light,

  454. the friendship.

  455. And it's so good

  456. to get out

  457. of the pouring rain

  458. and the wind.

  459. And in a sense

  460. that's how it was

  461. in our journey

  462. in salvation.

  463. This sense

  464. of the warmth,

  465. the love,

  466. the friendship.

  467. Just the,

  468. I'm home.

  469. This is where I belong.

  470. Can you remember it?

  471. The sense of belonging,

  472. the sense of realization.

  473. This is me.

  474. I'm now at home.

  475. And also

  476. it's a state of knowledge

  477. because light

  478. brings knowledge.

  479. Light opens

  480. our understanding.

  481. We have now

  482. come to see

  483. while we were dark,

  484. when we were in darkness

  485. and dark,

  486. yes,

  487. we may have

  488. grasped certain things

  489. and understood

  490. certain things,

  491. but our understanding

  492. was so limited.

  493. But now,

  494. and I'm sure

  495. like me,

  496. you lament

  497. and say,

  498. I wish I knew more.

  499. Well,

  500. be encouraged.

  501. You know a lot more

  502. than you used to know.

  503. Because when you become

  504. a Christian,

  505. you grow

  506. in grace

  507. and in the knowledge

  508. of the Lord Jesus.

  509. Both these things

  510. take part.

  511. Grace and knowledge

  512. are working together

  513. and we need to seek

  514. to grow more and more

  515. in grace

  516. and in knowledge.

  517. And as we grow

  518. in knowledge,

  519. we do so with the word

  520. and we do so

  521. married to the experiences

  522. that we go through.

  523. You know,

  524. as a Christian,

  525. the experiences

  526. that you go through

  527. today,

  528. you're able to

  529. understand them

  530. far more.

  531. Yes,

  532. because you've been

  533. on the journey

  534. longer,

  535. but your knowledge

  536. of the word

  537. is greater.

  538. And the word

  539. tied and married

  540. to the experiences

  541. you go through

  542. help your knowledge

  543. to grow

  544. so that you have

  545. a greater understanding

  546. of God's ways,

  547. God's purposes,

  548. of who God is.

  549. And so there's

  550. this great sense

  551. of knowledge.

  552. You know who you

  553. belong to.

  554. You know why you're here.

  555. You know where you're going.

  556. You have an understanding

  557. of God's love to you.

  558. You have a knowledge

  559. of God's peace

  560. in your heart.

  561. There's an understanding

  562. of the cross.

  563. There's an understanding

  564. of the resurrection.

  565. All these things,

  566. darkness,

  567. is gone.

  568. It's now light.

  569. Now I know

  570. there'll always be days

  571. when we're not so conscious

  572. of the light.

  573. And sometimes we say,

  574. I am in darkness.

  575. But you won't be left there.

  576. Micah said,

  577. Micah says,

  578. when I sit in darkness,

  579. the Lord shall be a light

  580. to me.

  581. And you know the Lord will.

  582. Even if there are times

  583. we're struggling,

  584. the Lord will reveal

  585. himself again to us.

  586. And so the fault

  587. is never with the Lord.

  588. It's never that his light

  589. has ever dimmed.

  590. But so often,

  591. the clouds of our own sin

  592. and all the other things

  593. come in and block the way.

  594. And just finally,

  595. it tells us there

  596. that we are to walk

  597. as children of light.

  598. And it tells us very simply

  599. of three things there.

  600. For the fruit of light

  601. is found in all that is good

  602. and right and true.

  603. That idea of good

  604. is goodness.

  605. That should be our life

  606. where we are seeking

  607. the good of other people.

  608. If God's goodness

  609. is part of our lives,

  610. if the Lord's light

  611. is within us,

  612. then it is only natural

  613. that we are seeking

  614. the well-being,

  615. seeking the good.

  616. So we're wanting

  617. to encourage

  618. and to edify

  619. and to strengthen

  620. and to build up

  621. and to do good

  622. at whatever opportunity

  623. we have.

  624. Right or righteousness.

  625. In other words,

  626. we are to be right

  627. before God

  628. and before one another.

  629. A right man.

  630. We talk,

  631. we talk of a right,

  632. well,

  633. that's what the Christian

  634. should be,

  635. a right person

  636. and a true person.

  637. No deceit,

  638. no dishonesty,

  639. no deception,

  640. but seeking to deal honestly

  641. and to deal well

  642. with everybody.

  643. There shouldn't be

  644. any hidden things.

  645. Our lives

  646. shouldn't have any hidden things.

  647. Not that we can hide from God,

  648. but our lives

  649. should be open.

  650. Paul so often

  651. throughout says

  652. that we are to live

  653. in this sincerity,

  654. which is meaning,

  655. there's various meanings

  656. that he gives,

  657. but one of them

  658. is we're searched

  659. like under the spotlight,

  660. under the sunlight.

  661. And if our lives

  662. are lived in a right way,

  663. then we can live

  664. comfortably

  665. with one another.

  666. You know if you're

  667. at the airport

  668. and you're going away

  669. and you're

  670. you know your baggage

  671. goes through a scanner.

  672. If you had something

  673. that's in the

  674. forbidden category

  675. in your case,

  676. you'd be kind of sweating

  677. a wee bit

  678. saying,

  679. I wonder if they'll find that.

  680. But if everything's all right,

  681. then you're okay,

  682. you're not worried at all.

  683. Well that's the kind of idea

  684. we should be,

  685. that our lives

  686. are going through

  687. this scanner

  688. so that

  689. before God

  690. and before one another.

  691. Now of course

  692. that convicts us

  693. because so often

  694. as we look at our lives

  695. we say,

  696. oh,

  697. because we all sin.

  698. We all,

  699. as we face up

  700. to what it is saying here,

  701. we all do wrong.

  702. But we should walk

  703. as a light.

  704. Our lives should be

  705. a living testimony.

  706. Jesus said,

  707. you are the lights

  708. of the world.

  709. The light of the Lord

  710. should shine through us.

  711. I read of a diamond

  712. somewhere,

  713. you probably read of that,

  714. that if it's exposed

  715. to the sunlight

  716. for a while

  717. and then you put it

  718. into a darkened room,

  719. it continues to shine.

  720. In a sense,

  721. that's how we should be

  722. as we come from

  723. the presence of the Lord.

  724. Like Moses,

  725. remember when he was

  726. up on the mountain,

  727. up with the Lord.

  728. When he came back down,

  729. his face so shone

  730. that the Israelites

  731. couldn't look at him.

  732. He had to put a veil

  733. over his face.

  734. They said,

  735. we can't look at you

  736. as he came from

  737. the presence of the Lord.

  738. So our lives

  739. ought to be a light

  740. that shines.

  741. And you sometimes

  742. say to yourself,

  743. why are people so,

  744. why is the world

  745. so opposed to Christianity?

  746. For that very reason.

  747. That the world

  748. can't handle

  749. the light of the Christian.

  750. The world

  751. would want

  752. the Christian removed.

  753. That's why they want

  754. the Bible removed.

  755. Because the Bible

  756. is a light

  757. that bothers them.

  758. the Christian

  759. is often a light

  760. that bothers them.

  761. But the other side

  762. to it is

  763. that the Christian

  764. as a light

  765. is a huge influence

  766. for good.

  767. And I'm sure

  768. as you and I

  769. look back

  770. over our lives,

  771. we can remember

  772. Christians

  773. who shone.

  774. Christians

  775. whose lives

  776. influenced us.

  777. Not just

  778. by what they said,

  779. but by what they were.

  780. there.

  781. So Paul

  782. is saying here,

  783. here's the acid test,

  784. threefold acid test

  785. for our life.

  786. In order to live right,

  787. ask yourself this,

  788. is it good?

  789. If it is,

  790. it's right.

  791. Is it good?

  792. Is it right?

  793. Is it true?

  794. These are the three principles.

  795. If it's good,

  796. if it's right,

  797. is it true?

  798. May the Lord

  799. help us then

  800. to have this

  801. governing our lives

  802. in order that

  803. we may walk

  804. in the light,

  805. displaying the light

  806. as we have been

  807. now delivered

  808. from the darkness.

  809. Let us pray.

  810. Lord,

  811. we give thanks

  812. for our time together.

  813. And as we

  814. reflect on your word

  815. and what it tells us,

  816. so often we feel

  817. we come so far short.

  818. But we give thanks

  819. for your patience

  820. how you deal with us.

  821. And we give thanks

  822. for the desire

  823. within our heart

  824. to walk in the light

  825. and to be reflectors

  826. of your light

  827. so that the image

  828. of Christ

  829. may shine in us

  830. more and more.

  831. We pray then

  832. to bless us

  833. as a congregation.

  834. Bless every home

  835. and every family.

  836. Again,

  837. we pray your blessing

  838. upon our young people

  839. and the holiday club

  840. that's taking place.

  841. And we give thanks

  842. for the huge input

  843. of Scott and Fiona.

  844. And we pray for them,

  845. for Scott and Fiona

  846. and for Katie Bell

  847. and Lily May

  848. as they will be moving

  849. down to North Harris.

  850. We pray that

  851. their time there

  852. will be a time

  853. of blessing

  854. as it has been

  855. with us here.

  856. And watch over them,

  857. we pray.

  858. And we ask, Lord,

  859. that you will watch

  860. over all of us.

  861. Do us good,

  862. we pray.

  863. Guide us

  864. and keep us

  865. and guard us

  866. at every time.

  867. Take away our sin

  868. in Jesus' name.

  869. Amen.
