  1. We're going to begin our service singing to God's praise from Psalm 89, verses 13 to 18.

    Psalms 89:13–18

  2. Psalm 89, verses 13 to 18. This is from the Scottish Psalter, and the tune is Newington.

    Psalms 89:13–18

  3. Psalm 89, from verse 13.

  4. Thou hast an arm that's full of power, thy hand is great in might,

  5. and thy right hand exceedingly exalted is in height. Justice and judgment of thy throne are made the dwelling place.

  6. Mercy accompanied with truth shall go before thy face. O greatly blessed the people are, the joyful sound that know.

  7. In brightness of thy face, O Lord, they ever on shall go. They in thy name shall all the day rejoice exceedingly,

  8. and in thy righteousness shall they exalted be on high.

  9. Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in thee, and in thy favour shall our horn and power exalted be.

  10. For God is our defence, and he to us doth safety bring. The Holy One of Israel is our Almighty King.

  11. 13 to 18 of Psalm 89.

  12. 13 to 18 of Psalm 89.

  13. 13 to 18. This is from the Scottish Psalm 89.

  14. 14 to 18. This is from the Scottish Psalm 89.

  15. 14 to 19 of June.

  16. In thy name shall all the day rejoice succeedingly, and in thy righteousness shall live exalted beyond high.

  17. Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in me, and in my heaven shall our Lord and Father exalted be.

  18. God is our defense, and he to us thus deeply pray.

  19. The Holy One of Israel is the Almighty King.

  20. Amen.

  21. Let us bow in prayer.

  22. O Lord, as we bow before you this evening, we pray that you will help us to worship you in a right way.

  23. We pray that we may be conscious of your power and glory and majesty, that we may realize that this is a special moment for us, where we draw near to the King of glory.

  24. We are so grounded in the here and the now.

  25. This world has such a powerful grip and influence upon us, that so often our vision of you is clouded.

  26. There is so much that hides you from us.

  27. But we pray that even as we gather here just now, that we may be given a little insight, a little sight of you,

  28. in such a way that it will enlighten our minds, that it will lift our hearts, that it will enable us to be more zealous, more committed to you.

  29. And our desire is to follow you with all our heart.

  30. We pray, O Lord, that we might praise you for all that you are.

  31. We realize that you are beyond our understanding.

  32. The Word of God reveals so much to us.

  33. You have made known so much about yourself to us.

  34. And yet our understanding is so limited.

  35. There is so little that we're able to fully grasp or understand.

  36. But, Lord, we give thanks that when we come to faith, that our eyes are opened, our understanding is enlightened,

  37. and we're able to lay hold on spiritual truths that beforehand were completely such that we couldn't figure them out at all.

  38. We give thanks, Lord, for your patience with us.

  39. We give thanks, Lord, for how you look after us, despite who we are and what we are.

  40. Despite our sin and our waywardness, our faults and our failings.

  41. And we seek tonight to confess our sin before you.

  42. We sin before you so readily, so freely, and so often we are unaware of our sin.

  43. And yet every so often through your Spirit and the Word, you are revealing to us just what we are

  44. and of how far short we are of the glory that you require from us.

  45. And so we pray that you will indeed be merciful to us in our failings and in our sin against you and also our sins against one another.

  46. We pray, Lord, that you'll bless this congregation, particularly at a time of vacancy.

  47. We pray that you will guide and lead and direct in the right way and that you will make it abundantly clear the way in which we are to go.

  48. We give thanks for Calamurdo being with us and we pray for him for all the extra responsibilities and duties that are placed upon him just now.

  49. We give thanks for all the extra responsibilities and give thanks for all the extra responsibilities and the rest of us.

  50. For many years to come.

  51. We give thanks for all the willing hands and willing helpers.

  52. And we're blessed in this congregation with men and women who are so able in so many different ways.

  53. And we give thanks, Lord, especially just now for the women that do so much.

  54. And we give thanks for their zeal and their many great gifts that they've been equipped with.

  55. And we give thanks, Lord, for our leadership of men and we pray your blessing upon them.

  56. And we ask that you will guide them and bless them in everything.

  57. So we pray for Calamurdo and Joanne and family.

  58. We pray also for our intermoderate, Colin and Aileen and their family.

  59. And we pray your blessing upon your church at large.

  60. And we give thanks for the news we had this week of Reverend David Ferguson accepting the call to North Uist.

  61. And so we pray for him and Catherine and for Duncan as that will be soon their new place and new sphere of work.

  62. And ask that you will undertake for them and bless them and that their ministry will be a fruitful one there.

  63. Lord, we give thanks for the way your word goes out.

  64. Whether it is in the gathered assembly like we have here just now.

  65. Or whether it's on live links.

  66. Or whether it is on the airways.

  67. Or in whatever way throughout this world.

  68. Hundreds of thousands, millions in fact, are hearing your word.

  69. And we pray that millions will come to faith.

  70. We pray that today will be a great day in the kingdom of God.

  71. And it will be a mighty day where the kingdom of darkness is being hit hard.

  72. Where many souls will come to faith.

  73. Where people will come bowing the knee before the Lord.

  74. Seeking that Jesus Christ will be Lord of their lives.

  75. Pray for those who are lonely and struggling.

  76. We pray, Lord, for those who are recovering from illness.

  77. Or undergoing surgery or treatment.

  78. Pray for those who are unwell, confined to their homes.

  79. We ask your blessing on them.

  80. Pray for those whose hearts are heavy and sore.

  81. Those who know what it is to have lost family.

  82. To have lost loved ones.

  83. It's a pain that lingers on day, week, month, year after year.

  84. And so we pray for every broken heart.

  85. And ask that you will draw near and grant your grace and your upholding strength.

  86. Lord, we pray that we may then, as we come under your word, know your peace, your presence, your power.

  87. Lord, we pray to bless us nationally as well.

  88. We pray for a new government.

  89. We pray, Lord, that you will lead us in the right way.

  90. We seem to be going further and further and further away from you.

  91. There is a godlessness taking hold of our land that is frightening.

  92. And we pray that you will have mercy upon us.

  93. In wrath that you will remember mercy.

  94. We pray for the nations of this world, particularly where there is conflict.

  95. In the Middle East and in Ukraine and in many other places throughout this world.

  96. We pray especially for your people that they will be protected.

  97. We long for peace.

  98. And we pray, Lord, that peace may come.

  99. Watch over us then as we wait upon you.

  100. Grant us your grace and take away from us our sin in Jesus' name.

  101. Amen.

  102. We're going to sing again Psalm 26.

  103. Psalm 26, verses 1 to 8.

    Psalms 26:1–8

  104. It's on page 30 and sing Psalms.

  105. 1 to 8.

  106. Declare me innocent, O Lord.

  107. I have walked in blameless ways.

  108. And I have trusted in the Lord, not wavering all my days.

  109. Test me, O Lord, and try my heart.

  110. My inmost thoughts survey.

  111. Your love surrounds me.

  112. From your truth my feet will never stray.

  113. I do not sit with worthless folk.

  114. I shun the hypocrite.

  115. I hate the wicked's gatherings.

  116. With them I will not sit.

  117. I wash my hands in innocence.

  118. And blameless is my heart.

  119. I go about your altar, Lord.

  120. The place you set apart.

  121. Verses 1 to 8.

  122. The tune is in Minver.

  123. Psalm 26.

  124. Declare me innocent, O Lord.

  125. I have walked in blameless ways.

  126. And I have trusted in the Lord, not wavering all my days.

  127. Let me, O Lord, and try my heart.

  128. My inmost thoughts survey.

  129. Your love surrounds me from your truth.

  130. My feet will never stray.

  131. Do not sit with worthless hope.

  132. I shun the hypocrite.

  133. I hate the wicked's gatherings.

  134. With them I will not sit.

  135. I wash my hands in innocence.

  136. And with blessed is my heart.

  137. I go about your altar, Lord.

  138. The place you set apart.

  139. Tell of all your awesome deeds.

  140. Oh, faith in life, your grace.

  141. Your glory fills.

  142. Your dwelling place.

  143. I love your hearts always.

  144. Your background.

  145. Let's turn now to read God's word in John's gospel.

  146. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  147. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  148. And we pick up a reading at verse 12.

  149. John chapter 12, and reading from verse 12 through to verse 36.

    John 12 chapter mention

  150. Verse 36.

  151. The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  152. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, Hosanna!

  153. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.

  154. And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it.

  155. Just as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion.

  156. Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.

  157. His disciples did not understand these things at first.

  158. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.

  159. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.

  160. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

  161. So the Pharisees said to one another, You see you are gaining nothing.

  162. Look, the world has gone after him.

  163. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks.

  164. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  165. Philip went and told Andrew.

  166. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

  167. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  168. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone.

  169. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  170. Whoever loves his life loses it.

  171. And whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

  172. If anyone serves me, he must follow me.

  173. And where I am, there will my servant be also.

  174. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

  175. Now is my soul troubled.

  176. And what shall I say?

  177. Father, save me from this hour.

  178. But for this purpose I have come to this hour.

  179. Father, glorify your name.

  180. Then a voice came from heaven.

  181. I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.

  182. The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered.

  183. Others said, An angel has spoken to him.

  184. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not mine.

  185. Now is the judgment of this world.

  186. Now will the ruler of this world be cast out.

  187. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.

  188. He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

  189. So the crowd answered him, We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever.

  190. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up?

  191. Who is this Son of Man?

  192. So Jesus said to them, The light is among you for a little while longer.

  193. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you.

  194. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

  195. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.

  196. When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.

  197. Amen. And may God bless to us this reading of his holy word.

  198. Going to sing again now in Psalm 63 from the Scottish Psalter.

  199. And the tune is Barrow.

  200. Psalm 63.

  201. It's on page 295.

  202. And we're going to sing verses 1 to 8.

  203. Psalm 63.

  204. Lord, thee my God I'll early seek, my soul to thirst for thee.

  205. My flesh longs in a dry, parched land wherein no waters be.

  206. That I thy power may behold and brightness of thy face.

  207. As I have seen thee heretofore within thy holy place.

  208. Since better is thy love than life, my lips thee praise shall give.

  209. I in thy name will lift my hands and bless thee while I live.

  210. Even as with marrow and with fat my soul shall fill it be.

  211. Then shall my mouth with joyful lips sing praises unto thee.

  212. When I do thee upon my bed, remember with delight.

  213. And when on thee I meditate and watch us of the night.

  214. So on to the end of verse 8, Psalm 63, 1 to 8.

  215. Lord, thee my God I'll early seek.

  216. Amen.

  217. Lord, thee my God I'll early seek,

  218. my soul and thirst for thee.

  219. My flesh longs in a dry, parched land wherein no waters be.

  220. That I thy power may behold and brightness of thy face.

  221. As I have seen thee heretofore within thy holy place.

  222. Then better is thy love than life, my earth's weak wish shall appear.

  223. I in thy name will lift my hands and bless thee while I live.

  224. I in thy name will lift my hands and bless thee while I live.

  225. He comes with marrow and with fat, my soul shall fill it in thee.

  226. Then shall thy love with joyfulness sing praises unto thee.

  227. When I do thee upon my bed, remember with delight.

  228. And when on thee I meditate in watches of the night.

  229. Then shadow of thy wings of joy, on the night hell has been.

  230. My soul be called, O pardon me, my right hand thou sustain.

  231. Amen.

  232. Let's turn again to the chapter we read.

  233. Psalm, John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  234. Maybe we could read from verse 20.

  235. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks.

  236. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him,

  237. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  238. Philip went and told Andrew.

  239. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

  240. Jesus answered him, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  241. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,

  242. it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  243. And especially these verses 25,

  244. Whoever loves his life loses it,

  245. and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

  246. If anyone serves me, he must follow me,

  247. and where I am, there will my servant be also.

  248. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

  249. Now it's interesting that we have here,

  250. at the beginning of this section here, of Greeks,

  251. wanting to see Jesus.

  252. Because there's almost here for us a picture of just about what is to happen.

  253. Jesus came to the Jews, he came to his own,

  254. and his own didn't receive him.

  255. Not only did they not receive him,

  256. they wanted rid of him.

  257. And that moment was drawing near,

  258. where they were finally going to get him,

  259. and in their minds get rid of him.

  260. And at that very same moment,

  261. we have Gentiles coming,

  262. and they're wanting to see Jesus.

  263. And it's almost giving us a picture of what is about to take place.

  264. The rejection by the Jews of Christ,

  265. and the great spread of the gospel,

  266. out into the Gentile world.

  267. Now, these Greeks who came up,

  268. and there was a part,

  269. they could assimilate to a certain extent,

  270. extent into Jewish worship.

  271. But there were a lot of restrictions,

  272. a lot of barriers,

  273. and even in the temple,

  274. they weren't allowed past the court of the temple.

  275. And how thankful we live in a day

  276. where there are no restrictions,

  277. there are no barriers,

  278. because Jesus has broken down all the barriers.

  279. There is now no wall of separation.

  280. And it doesn't matter a person's background,

  281. it doesn't matter a person's culture,

  282. it doesn't matter a person's position in life,

  283. it doesn't matter a person's wealth,

  284. or it doesn't matter a person's,

  285. it doesn't matter anything.

  286. Every person is being invited

  287. through the gospel to Jesus Christ.

  288. And when a person comes to faith,

  289. irrespective of how old they are,

  290. or of how young they are,

  291. where they are from in the world,

  292. they will become one in Christ Jesus.

  293. And that is the wonderful thing

  294. about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  295. It is for the prince as much as for the prisoner.

  296. And it is something that we've grown up with,

  297. we're used to.

  298. But it was so different back then,

  299. in the time when there were all these restrictions.

  300. So these Greeks came to Philip.

  301. Philip was kind of a,

  302. although he was from Bethsaida,

  303. was kind of a, almost a Greek,

  304. largely a Greek name.

  305. So maybe it was,

  306. maybe there were relations that he had

  307. that were Greeks.

  308. But anyway, they come to Philip.

  309. And it's very interesting

  310. that Philip goes to Andrew

  311. before he goes to Jesus.

  312. And as we mentioned this before,

  313. that Andrew always seems to be

  314. the go-between of the disciples.

  315. He seems to be the approachable one.

  316. He seems to be the one that,

  317. if people are wanting to,

  318. to reach Jesus or speak to Jesus,

  319. it tends to be by Andrew.

  320. Remember the time where

  321. there was the feeding of the thousands?

  322. And it was to Andrew.

  323. The boy had the loaves and the fish.

  324. So Andrew was the one who told Jesus,

  325. here's a boy here.

  326. He's got the five loaves and the fish.

  327. And it's a very important part

  328. of our Christian walk

  329. to be approachable to people.

  330. We shouldn't put up any barriers.

  331. Because if you look at the life of Jesus,

  332. he most certainly did not put up any barriers.

  333. He was the most welcoming person

  334. that ever walked this world.

  335. And he was open to everybody.

  336. And so should we.

  337. We should always be open and accessible

  338. and approachable

  339. if we are serving the Lord Jesus Christ.

  340. And of course it was Andrew

  341. who was the one who introduced

  342. his brother to Jesus.

  343. Because Jesus had spoken to Andrew first

  344. and when Andrew had discovered

  345. there was the Messiah,

  346. he went straight and got his brother.

  347. And you and I know that

  348. that's often the hardest thing to do

  349. is to witness in our own family,

  350. isn't it?

  351. It's often easier to witness

  352. to people outside,

  353. to other people,

  354. than to those of your own family.

  355. But anyway, Andrew,

  356. witnessed to Peter

  357. and he took Peter along

  358. to meet Jesus.

  359. Little did Andrew know

  360. that day when he brought

  361. Peter to meet with Jesus

  362. that just a few years later

  363. Peter would be preaching

  364. and thousands would be converted.

  365. And you see the wonderful link

  366. in that chain.

  367. You know, we're all part.

  368. We all have a part to play.

  369. And it's amazing

  370. the threads that run through.

  371. You can trace it in your own life,

  372. the threads that run through

  373. your own life.

  374. When you look back

  375. and you see the influence

  376. of this person

  377. and the influence of that person

  378. and what this person was

  379. and what this person said

  380. and you can look back

  381. and all these things,

  382. it's like a jigsaw

  383. coming together

  384. to the place

  385. where you come to faith

  386. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  387. That's the wonder of it.

  388. We've all got our own

  389. little part to play.

  390. Well, Andrew was somebody

  391. who was very much used

  392. by the Lord.

  393. So Philip and Andrew,

  394. they tell Jesus.

  395. And Jesus answered them

  396. and he said very simply,

  397. the hour has come

  398. for the Son of Man

  399. to be glorified.

  400. Now, there was nothing

  401. at this moment

  402. to indicate that

  403. that hour had come.

  404. Because just a little earlier,

  405. if we had read,

  406. well, we did back there,

  407. we find that Jesus,

  408. that's what we read,

  409. the triumphant,

  410. the entry of Jesus

  411. into Jerusalem.

  412. It's a moment

  413. when the crowd

  414. seemed to be embracing Jesus.

  415. In fact, the Pharisees say,

  416. look, the whole world

  417. has gone after him.

  418. It seemed to be a high point,

  419. a key point

  420. in the popularity of Jesus.

  421. And yet Jesus says,

  422. the hour has come.

  423. He was following

  424. a heavenly timetable.

  425. All along the way,

  426. he was keeping

  427. exactly to the timetable

  428. that his father

  429. had given him.

  430. That's why on other occasions

  431. in Scripture

  432. you will find it saying,

  433. his hour had not yet come,

  434. but the hour has come.

  435. And the hour has come.

  436. And so Jesus is telling them,

  437. those there,

  438. the hour has come

  439. for the Son of Man

  440. to be glorified.

  441. And in this he is telling

  442. how he is to be seen.

  443. It is not as a king,

  444. he didn't come as a kingly monarch.

  445. Oh, he's going to come

  446. as a kingly monarch

  447. when he comes again.

  448. When he came into this world,

  449. it wasn't as a kingly monarch.

  450. He didn't journey through this world

  451. wearing a crown,

  452. but carrying a cross.

  453. He didn't come into this world

  454. being born in a palace,

  455. but in a stable.

  456. And all his journey

  457. through this world

  458. was a downward kush

  459. of shame and humiliation.

  460. But all the time

  461. he was keeping to the timetable

  462. and honoring his father

  463. every single step of the way.

  464. And this was a way

  465. that the Greeks

  466. were going to see Jesus

  467. in what he was going to do.

  468. You know, there are some people

  469. that they look on Jesus

  470. and they look at his example in life.

  471. They look at the way

  472. he denied himself.

  473. And they look at his death

  474. as a kind of a martyr's death.

  475. And they hold him up as a martyr.

  476. A great man, a martyr.

  477. A man who lived a life of self-denial.

  478. But they're just looking

  479. at the human Jesus.

  480. They're missing the point.

  481. If that's the only Jesus

  482. that we have

  483. as one who set an example

  484. and let us not miss

  485. the example that Jesus set,

  486. but if that's all we're seeing,

  487. then we're missing the main point.

  488. He came in order to die.

  489. And as the young people

  490. were looking at the substitute,

  491. he came as a substitute.

  492. And so this was a way

  493. that the Greeks

  494. were going to be able

  495. to see Jesus.

  496. And one last thing

  497. I would say talking about

  498. the Greeks coming to see Jesus.

  499. Can I say to anybody in here,

  500. and you're saying to yourself,

  501. you know,

  502. I have wanted to see Jesus

  503. for a long time.

  504. You might be saying,

  505. oh, it comes and it goes,

  506. but there's a desire in my heart

  507. to become a Christian.

  508. And I sit in church,

  509. and I pray,

  510. and I don't seem to get anywhere.

  511. I read my Bible,

  512. and I pray,

  513. and I don't seem to get anywhere.

  514. Well,

  515. see what the Greeks did.

  516. They went,

  517. and they spoke to Philip,

  518. and they said,

  519. we want to see Jesus.

  520. And I think there's a point

  521. there for us.

  522. If you're somebody

  523. who's seeking and searching,

  524. and you're from so far,

  525. you haven't found,

  526. you can't quite get hold of it.

  527. Speak to a Christian

  528. that you know.

  529. And you might say to yourself,

  530. that's the hardest thing

  531. for me to do.

  532. What will he say?

  533. What will she say?

  534. They'll be delighted.

  535. And speak to them in confidence.

  536. It's not that they're going

  537. to enable you

  538. to be a Christian,

  539. but it might be

  540. just what they say.

  541. They might give you

  542. that final point.

  543. That's something

  544. which will encourage you

  545. and enable you

  546. to see for yourself.

  547. Because at the end of the day,

  548. you have to see for yourself

  549. and believe yourself.

  550. But there's a point

  551. we mustn't miss there

  552. of the desire

  553. to see Jesus,

  554. of going to speak

  555. to a Christian,

  556. to speak to somebody else.

  557. Because they will very likely

  558. be able to help you.

  559. But Jesus then says

  560. that the hour has come

  561. for the Son of Man

  562. to be glorified.

  563. And of course,

  564. the glory of God

  565. is revealed.

  566. It's the manifestation

  567. of His divine majesty.

  568. And you know,

  569. when we think about the cross,

  570. we say,

  571. what's the glory in the cross?

  572. All we can think of

  573. is shame.

  574. There was,

  575. it was,

  576. anyone who was

  577. hanged on a tree,

  578. it was shame.

  579. It says that in Scripture.

  580. It was cursed.

  581. Where's the glory in it?

  582. But you and I know

  583. that that weekend,

  584. that weekend

  585. that occurred there

  586. in the death,

  587. the arrest,

  588. the death,

  589. and the resurrection

  590. of Jesus Christ,

  591. was the greatest display

  592. of God's glory

  593. that this world

  594. has ever seen.

  595. The creation

  596. was an awesome display

  597. of the glory of God.

  598. In fact,

  599. when we look up

  600. to the heavens up,

  601. it tells us

  602. the heavens declare

  603. the glory of God.

  604. His handiwork

  605. is written all across.

  606. the stars speak

  607. of the glory of God.

  608. The moon,

  609. the sun,

  610. the whole being,

  611. it all speaks

  612. of the glory of God.

  613. This world

  614. and this massive universe,

  615. it all speaks.

  616. But that,

  617. that doesn't touch

  618. the magnificence

  619. of the display

  620. of his glory

  621. that is found

  622. in this weekend

  623. when Jesus dies

  624. for our sins.

  625. Because the very heartbeat

  626. of the salvation

  627. of millions

  628. is in that weekend there.

  629. That is where

  630. the great glory

  631. of Jesus

  632. and the glory

  633. of God the Father

  634. is seen.

  635. And we're so thankful

  636. that we're able

  637. to understand this.

  638. And Jesus then says,

  639. unless a grain of wheat

  640. falls into the earth

  641. and dies,

  642. it remains alone.

  643. But if it dies,

  644. it bears much fruit.

  645. And of course,

  646. he's speaking here

  647. about himself.

  648. And you and I know

  649. that if you have

  650. a grain of wheat

  651. and you take it

  652. off the shelf

  653. and you just put it

  654. back on the shelf,

  655. it'll never be more

  656. than a grain of wheat.

  657. But if you take

  658. that grain of wheat

  659. and a number

  660. of grains of wheat

  661. and you put it

  662. into the earth,

  663. you sow it

  664. into the earth,

  665. it dies.

  666. But from its death,

  667. the death,

  668. then life comes.

  669. And that's what

  670. Jesus is saying.

  671. That's what's going

  672. to happen.

  673. In order for the Greeks

  674. to see me,

  675. they have to see

  676. my death

  677. and what it achieves.

  678. I am like that grain

  679. of wheat

  680. being deliberately

  681. sown into the ground

  682. and from it

  683. will come

  684. the most amazing harvest.

  685. If you're a believer

  686. tonight,

  687. you're part of the harvest

  688. that has come

  689. from the death

  690. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  691. And Jesus continues

  692. to ingather

  693. his people.

  694. But then

  695. at verse 25,

  696. Jesus says,

  697. whoever loves

  698. his life

  699. loses it

  700. and whoever

  701. hates his life

  702. in this world

  703. will keep it

  704. for eternal life.

  705. If anyone serves me,

  706. he must follow me

  707. and where I am there

  708. will my servant be.

  709. If anyone serves me,

  710. the Father

  711. will honor him.

  712. Now,

  713. people might find

  714. this verse

  715. kind of strange

  716. because it's saying

  717. whoever hates

  718. his life

  719. in this world

  720. will keep it

  721. for eternal life.

  722. And in a sense,

  723. that almost goes

  724. against the grain

  725. because the greatest

  726. instinct that you

  727. and I have

  728. is self-preservation,

  729. looking after ourselves.

  730. When we're little children,

  731. we have the

  732. me first

  733. syndrome.

  734. We want to be first.

  735. Children are,

  736. they don't realize it,

  737. but by nature,

  738. they're very selfish

  739. and self-centered.

  740. And I'm not being

  741. critical of them.

  742. We were all like that.

  743. It's me.

  744. It's about me.

  745. Now,

  746. as we grow up

  747. and as we develop

  748. within culture

  749. and within our society

  750. and with our peers

  751. and so on,

  752. we learn to give

  753. and to take

  754. and all that.

  755. But that me first,

  756. it's about me.

  757. It's my life.

  758. It's about me.

  759. It remains.

  760. It's part of us.

  761. And so,

  762. self-preservation

  763. is a great instinct

  764. within our lives.

  765. We want the best

  766. for ourselves.

  767. And so,

  768. in a sense,

  769. we might almost think,

  770. well,

  771. this is a strange thing

  772. what Jesus is saying here

  773. about hating our life.

  774. Does that mean

  775. I've got to go about

  776. saying,

  777. oh,

  778. I hate myself.

  779. Oh,

  780. I'm a horrible person.

  781. Well,

  782. as a Christian,

  783. there will be times

  784. we will say that.

  785. There are times

  786. we will grovel.

  787. There are times

  788. that we will cry out

  789. before the Lord

  790. and we'll say

  791. like the Apostle Paul,

  792. oh,

  793. wretched man that I am

  794. because we're so conscious

  795. of our sin

  796. and our disobedience

  797. and our failures

  798. of all that we've done wrong.

  799. And so,

  800. there are times

  801. that we honestly

  802. hate who we are.

  803. But that's not really

  804. what it's actually

  805. talking about here

  806. at this point.

  807. Because

  808. what is being said here

  809. is the same

  810. as Jesus said elsewhere

  811. about,

  812. he said,

  813. whoever was going

  814. to follow me

  815. has to hate

  816. his father

  817. and his mother

  818. and hate

  819. even his own life.

  820. And again,

  821. people might find

  822. that very strange.

  823. What does Jesus

  824. mean by that?

  825. Well,

  826. the word hate

  827. here is really

  828. it has a comparative

  829. force.

  830. And what Jesus

  831. is really meaning

  832. here is

  833. that nothing

  834. must come

  835. between himself

  836. and you

  837. and me.

  838. He doesn't mean

  839. that you are to

  840. start hating

  841. your father

  842. and your mother

  843. and your brothers

  844. and your sisters

  845. and your husband

  846. and your wife.

  847. Not at all.

  848. Indeed,

  849. we're commanded

  850. to love.

  851. We're commanded

  852. to love.

  853. Husbands,

  854. love your wives.

  855. But what Jesus

  856. means is that

  857. we aren't to

  858. allow anything

  859. to come

  860. between ourselves

  861. and the Lord.

  862. In other words,

  863. we're to hang

  864. loose to the

  865. things of this

  866. world.

  867. And Jesus

  868. goes on

  869. and he shows

  870. us here

  871. how it works

  872. out.

  873. He says,

  874. whoever loves

  875. his life

  876. loses it

  877. and whoever

  878. hates his life

  879. in this world

  880. will keep it

  881. for eternal life.

  882. And what Jesus

  883. is simply

  884. talking about

  885. here is that

  886. there are people

  887. and their whole

  888. goal in life

  889. is about themselves.

  890. And they want

  891. to get on

  892. and they want

  893. to build

  894. their own empire.

  895. Whether it is

  896. a tiny empire

  897. or a great big empire.

  898. But the world

  899. is all that

  900. matters for them.

  901. And they want

  902. to progress

  903. and they want

  904. to do well

  905. and there's

  906. nothing wrong,

  907. don't get me wrong,

  908. there's nothing wrong

  909. with trying to progress

  910. and trying to do well.

  911. But it's an exclusion.

  912. of Jesus.

  913. Jesus is in the background

  914. or Jesus is not

  915. there at all.

  916. And people who live

  917. only for this world

  918. are in for the biggest

  919. shock and disappointment

  920. possible.

  921. Because you see,

  922. whatever the world

  923. gives with one hand,

  924. it takes straight back

  925. with the other.

  926. Nothing that we get

  927. in this life

  928. ever lasts.

  929. And we can't hang

  930. on to it.

  931. And there are

  932. so many of the rich

  933. and the famous

  934. and they seem

  935. to be able

  936. to go here,

  937. go wherever.

  938. There seem to be

  939. so few restrictions

  940. in life.

  941. But you know,

  942. the thing is,

  943. one day it's all

  944. going to come

  945. to an end.

  946. I remember reading

  947. one of the star

  948. famous people

  949. and he had been

  950. diagnosed with cancer

  951. and he was dying.

  952. And he said,

  953. this is a disaster.

  954. I have so loved life.

  955. I have loved living

  956. in life.

  957. I can't cope.

  958. That's,

  959. you see,

  960. this life was

  961. all that he had.

  962. And out with

  963. all the trappings

  964. of life,

  965. life was

  966. absolutely

  967. empty.

  968. That's why there's

  969. so much despair

  970. in people's lives.

  971. Because there isn't

  972. ultimate meaning.

  973. Because all these

  974. other things are just,

  975. they pass with the using.

  976. But Jesus is saying,

  977. if we lose

  978. our life

  979. in him,

  980. if we give

  981. our life

  982. to him,

  983. then we gain

  984. everything.

  985. And you and I

  986. know that in life,

  987. maybe as we get older,

  988. maybe the sparkle

  989. in life begins

  990. to go and

  991. there's various

  992. ailments

  993. and problems

  994. come in

  995. and life isn't

  996. quite the same.

  997. But you know,

  998. for the Christian,

  999. the sparkle

  1000. in Christ

  1001. never goes.

  1002. And that's a beauty.

  1003. That's the joy

  1004. of it all.

  1005. And so it is

  1006. imperative that we

  1007. learn to die

  1008. to self

  1009. and to live

  1010. for Christ.

  1011. And then Jesus

  1012. says,

  1013. if anyone

  1014. serves me,

  1015. he must follow

  1016. me.

  1017. And where I am,

  1018. there will my

  1019. servant be also.

  1020. Now,

  1021. we often ask

  1022. the question,

  1023. you know when a

  1024. person is converted,

  1025. when you,

  1026. you think back

  1027. to when you became

  1028. a Christian,

  1029. what's one of

  1030. the first things

  1031. that you said?

  1032. Lord,

  1033. what will you

  1034. have me to do?

  1035. What do you

  1036. want me to do?

  1037. And that's

  1038. very often

  1039. the response

  1040. of grace.

  1041. Lord,

  1042. what will I do?

  1043. Now,

  1044. we always think

  1045. of,

  1046. when we think

  1047. of serving,

  1048. we often tend

  1049. to think

  1050. of serving

  1051. in a particular

  1052. capacity.

  1053. ministry,

  1054. and we might

  1055. talk of ministry

  1056. as being a

  1057. servant of the

  1058. Lord.

  1059. Well,

  1060. there are

  1061. very,

  1062. very few

  1063. when you

  1064. think of

  1065. all the

  1066. millions of

  1067. Christians

  1068. who are

  1069. ministers,

  1070. who are

  1071. missionaries.

  1072. But Jesus

  1073. shows us

  1074. here that

  1075. service

  1076. and following

  1077. are inseparably

  1078. bound.

  1079. And the

  1080. moment you

  1081. begin to

  1082. follow Jesus,

  1083. you have

  1084. started to

  1085. serve.

  1086. And I

  1087. think it's

  1088. one of the

  1089. things that

  1090. we've got to

  1091. realize is

  1092. that our

  1093. service is

  1094. our life.

  1095. Wherever you've

  1096. been placed,

  1097. whether you're

  1098. still in

  1099. school,

  1100. you're serving

  1101. the Lord

  1102. there.

  1103. You might

  1104. say to

  1105. yourself,

  1106. oh,

  1107. when I get

  1108. older,

  1109. when I leave

  1110. school,

  1111. when I get

  1112. older and do

  1113. things,

  1114. I'll start

  1115. serving the

  1116. Lord.

  1117. No,

  1118. you're serving

  1119. the Lord

  1120. where you

  1121. are.

  1122. Whether you're

  1123. in primary

  1124. school,

  1125. secondary

  1126. school,

  1127. if you love

  1128. the Lord,

  1129. you're serving

  1130. the Lord

  1131. where you

  1132. are.

  1133. That's the

  1134. beauty of

  1135. it.

  1136. Whether you're

  1137. a mother

  1138. tending to

  1139. the wee

  1140. ones,

  1141. you're serving

  1142. the Lord

  1143. there.

  1144. Whether you're

  1145. serving teas

  1146. and coffees,

  1147. whether you're

  1148. a mechanic,

  1149. whether you're

  1150. a boat

  1151. builder,

  1152. whether you're

  1153. a teacher,

  1154. you can go

  1155. through wherever

  1156. the Lord has

  1157. placed you.

  1158. That's your

  1159. field of

  1160. service.

  1161. Because every

  1162. single day,

  1163. you are

  1164. serving the

  1165. Lord.

  1166. And I

  1167. think we've

  1168. got to lay

  1169. hold upon

  1170. this because

  1171. often we

  1172. tend to

  1173. compartmentalize

  1174. service and

  1175. think,

  1176. well,

  1177. service is

  1178. only something

  1179. that we

  1180. do when

  1181. we do it

  1182. with regard

  1183. to the

  1184. church.

  1185. Yes,

  1186. that is

  1187. part of

  1188. it.

  1189. But our

  1190. whole life

  1191. is service.

  1192. And always

  1193. remember this,

  1194. that following

  1195. and service

  1196. are together.

  1197. The moment

  1198. you start

  1199. following,

  1200. you have

  1201. begun to

  1202. serve the

  1203. Lord.

  1204. every single

  1205. believer in

  1206. here tonight

  1207. is serving

  1208. the Lord

  1209. wherever you

  1210. are at,

  1211. wherever the

  1212. Lord has

  1213. placed you.

  1214. You serve

  1215. him in your

  1216. home,

  1217. you serve

  1218. him in

  1219. your church,

  1220. you serve

  1221. him in your

  1222. work,

  1223. you serve

  1224. him in the

  1225. school,

  1226. you serve

  1227. him wherever.

  1228. And so we

  1229. mustn't lose

  1230. sight of that

  1231. great truth.

  1232. And again,

  1233. the word

  1234. following is

  1235. one, it's

  1236. such a

  1237. biblical expression,

  1238. it's one that

  1239. we use

  1240. here in

  1241. our own

  1242. culture.

  1243. When somebody's

  1244. converted,

  1245. we sometimes

  1246. say, oh

  1247. did you

  1248. hear so

  1249. and so

  1250. I started

  1251. following?

  1252. So biblical.

  1253. My sheep

  1254. hear my

  1255. voice and

  1256. they follow

  1257. me.

  1258. That's what

  1259. happened in

  1260. your life as

  1261. a Christian.

  1262. You heard

  1263. through the

  1264. word the

  1265. voice of

  1266. Jesus.

  1267. You might

  1268. not be able

  1269. to explain

  1270. it, but

  1271. that's what

  1272. happened.

  1273. And because

  1274. you know

  1275. Jesus and

  1276. I've come

  1277. to love

  1278. Jesus,

  1279. you're

  1280. following

  1281. him and

  1282. you're

  1283. serving

  1284. him.

  1285. And then

  1286. Jesus says,

  1287. if anyone

  1288. serves him

  1289. he must

  1290. follow me

  1291. and where

  1292. I am,

  1293. there will

  1294. my servant

  1295. be also.

  1296. Where is

  1297. Jesus?

  1298. Well,

  1299. primarily

  1300. he's in

  1301. the word,

  1302. he is the

  1303. word.

  1304. So when

  1305. we serve

  1306. and follow

  1307. Jesus,

  1308. we will

  1309. be much

  1310. in the

  1311. word.

  1312. Because the

  1313. word is

  1314. our guide,

  1315. it's what

  1316. feeds us

  1317. and teaches

  1318. us and

  1319. shows us

  1320. the way

  1321. to go.

  1322. Our

  1323. delight is

  1324. in the

  1325. word.

  1326. You're

  1327. here tonight

  1328. because you

  1329. love the

  1330. Lord.

  1331. You want

  1332. to be

  1333. here.

  1334. Because

  1335. why?

  1336. Because

  1337. Jesus has

  1338. promised

  1339. where two

  1340. or three

  1341. are gathered

  1342. in his

  1343. name.

  1344. He's

  1345. there.

  1346. And that's

  1347. why you

  1348. want to

  1349. be here.

  1350. Because it's

  1351. the place

  1352. where Jesus

  1353. blesses

  1354. people.

  1355. it's

  1356. the place

  1357. where Jesus

  1358. has promised

  1359. to be.

  1360. And so

  1361. it's natural

  1362. that you

  1363. want to

  1364. be there.

  1365. If you

  1366. love

  1367. Jesus,

  1368. you will

  1369. be seeking

  1370. to obey

  1371. him.

  1372. And that's

  1373. what faith

  1374. does.

  1375. Faith lays

  1376. hold upon

  1377. the word.

  1378. Now you

  1379. might be

  1380. saying to

  1381. yourself,

  1382. you know,

  1383. my grace

  1384. seems to

  1385. be so

  1386. weak and

  1387. my hope

  1388. seems to

  1389. be so

  1390. dim.

  1391. and my

  1392. faith seems

  1393. to be so

  1394. fragile.

  1395. And I'm

  1396. so aware

  1397. of all

  1398. my faults.

  1399. If you

  1400. could even

  1401. a strand

  1402. of faith.

  1403. Faith even

  1404. like a

  1405. grain of

  1406. mustard seed.

  1407. That faith

  1408. is sufficient.

  1409. That is the

  1410. faith that

  1411. enables you

  1412. to follow

  1413. Jesus.

  1414. And you

  1415. want to

  1416. obey.

  1417. When you

  1418. love someone,

  1419. you want

  1420. to do

  1421. what you

  1422. know

  1423. pleases

  1424. them.

  1425. You

  1426. won't

  1427. spend

  1428. your life

  1429. doing

  1430. things

  1431. that you

  1432. know

  1433. that will

  1434. aggravate

  1435. them or

  1436. annoy

  1437. them or

  1438. hurt

  1439. them.

  1440. You

  1441. will try

  1442. and do

  1443. what

  1444. pleases

  1445. them.

  1446. And so

  1447. it is

  1448. for the

  1449. Christian.

  1450. And how

  1451. do we

  1452. know what

  1453. pleases

  1454. Jesus?

  1455. By reading

  1456. his word.

  1457. His word

  1458. tells us.

  1459. And you

  1460. say to

  1461. yourself,

  1462. how do I

  1463. know that

  1464. I love

  1465. the Lord?

  1466. Jesus

  1467. says,

  1468. if you

  1469. love me,

  1470. you will

  1471. keep my

  1472. commandments.

  1473. So that

  1474. the desire

  1475. of your

  1476. life is

  1477. seeking to

  1478. obey what

  1479. the Lord

  1480. says to

  1481. us.

  1482. We

  1483. follow him.

  1484. as our

  1485. teacher.

  1486. That's in

  1487. the word.

  1488. We follow

  1489. him as

  1490. our guide.

  1491. We follow

  1492. him as

  1493. our lover.

  1494. We're

  1495. married to

  1496. Christ.

  1497. We've

  1498. taken his

  1499. name.

  1500. You know

  1501. when a

  1502. bride and

  1503. groom get

  1504. married,

  1505. normally

  1506. speaking,

  1507. I know

  1508. there's the

  1509. odd

  1510. exception,

  1511. but normally

  1512. speaking,

  1513. the bride

  1514. will take

  1515. the husband's

  1516. surname.

  1517. And when

  1518. we come

  1519. to Christ,

  1520. we are in

  1521. that union

  1522. as a bride

  1523. and a groom.

  1524. That's the

  1525. description

  1526. that scripture

  1527. takes.

  1528. And we

  1529. take his

  1530. name,

  1531. Christians.

  1532. That's what

  1533. we become.

  1534. We hold

  1535. up the

  1536. name of

  1537. Christ in

  1538. this world.

  1539. Oh, the

  1540. world doesn't

  1541. honor the

  1542. Christian.

  1543. The world

  1544. is more

  1545. likely to

  1546. laugh and

  1547. to ridicule

  1548. the Christian.

  1549. But we

  1550. see here

  1551. there is

  1552. someone who

  1553. does honor.

  1554. And that

  1555. is the

  1556. Father in

  1557. heaven.

  1558. Because

  1559. Jesus tells

  1560. us here,

  1561. if anyone

  1562. serves me,

  1563. he must

  1564. follow me.

  1565. And where

  1566. I am,

  1567. there will

  1568. my servant

  1569. be.

  1570. And if

  1571. anyone serves

  1572. me, the

  1573. Father will

  1574. honor him.

  1575. Isn't that

  1576. wonderful?

  1577. Jesus says,

  1578. and where

  1579. I am,

  1580. there will

  1581. my servant

  1582. be.

  1583. You know,

  1584. we know

  1585. where Jesus

  1586. is tonight,

  1587. and we know

  1588. that he's

  1589. present through

  1590. his spirit

  1591. here.

  1592. But we

  1593. know that

  1594. Jesus is

  1595. in heaven.

  1596. And what's

  1597. Jesus doing

  1598. in heaven for

  1599. us tonight?

  1600. Yes, we

  1601. know he's

  1602. interceding

  1603. on our

  1604. behalf.

  1605. But he

  1606. has gone

  1607. to prepare

  1608. a place

  1609. for us.

  1610. Your name

  1611. is there.

  1612. Your place

  1613. is there.

  1614. It's reserved.

  1615. And one

  1616. day Jesus

  1617. is going

  1618. to come

  1619. back.

  1620. He's going

  1621. to call

  1622. for you.

  1623. And in

  1624. the meantime

  1625. he's preparing

  1626. you for

  1627. the place

  1628. he has

  1629. prepared

  1630. for you.

  1631. Because

  1632. he wants

  1633. you,

  1634. as you've

  1635. been with

  1636. him here,

  1637. following

  1638. him here,

  1639. he wants

  1640. that you

  1641. will be

  1642. then with

  1643. him forever

  1644. and ever

  1645. and ever

  1646. and ever

  1647. and ever

  1648. in glory.

  1649. And you

  1650. know you

  1651. might feel

  1652. that your

  1653. service is

  1654. poor.

  1655. And I

  1656. think at the

  1657. end of the

  1658. day every

  1659. Christian feels

  1660. their service

  1661. is poor.

  1662. But you

  1663. notice what

  1664. it says?

  1665. If anyone

  1666. serves me,

  1667. the Father

  1668. will honor

  1669. him.

  1670. Isn't that

  1671. beautiful?

  1672. Every Christian,

  1673. all of you

  1674. tonight are

  1675. following the

  1676. Lord.

  1677. Remember

  1678. Lord, I

  1679. said you're

  1680. serving

  1681. him.

  1682. And in

  1683. serving

  1684. him, you're

  1685. going to get

  1686. the well

  1687. done, good

  1688. and faithful

  1689. servant when

  1690. you enter

  1691. into heaven.

  1692. Because the

  1693. Father is

  1694. going to

  1695. honor you

  1696. because of

  1697. your love

  1698. of his

  1699. Son.

  1700. And we

  1701. must always

  1702. remember that

  1703. this is how

  1704. it's going

  1705. to end.

  1706. I hope

  1707. everybody here

  1708. tonight is

  1709. following and

  1710. serving Jesus.

  1711. I hope

  1712. that your

  1713. soul, I

  1714. hope that

  1715. you haven't

  1716. made the

  1717. whole goal

  1718. of your

  1719. world just

  1720. to get

  1721. on.

  1722. Yes, by

  1723. all means

  1724. it's important

  1725. to get

  1726. on, but

  1727. not at the

  1728. expense of

  1729. your soul.

  1730. Jesus

  1731. elsewhere says

  1732. what will

  1733. profit somebody

  1734. to gain the

  1735. whole world

  1736. and lose

  1737. his own

  1738. soul.

  1739. Calmerda

  1740. told a

  1741. beautiful story

  1742. today.

  1743. I'm sure

  1744. all of you

  1745. heard it.

  1746. And I

  1747. had never

  1748. heard that

  1749. before.

  1750. But the

  1751. boy who

  1752. asked his

  1753. father,

  1754. is your

  1755. soul insured?

  1756. Because he

  1757. said your

  1758. house is

  1759. insured,

  1760. your barns

  1761. are insured,

  1762. your car is

  1763. insured,

  1764. your own

  1765. life, you

  1766. got life

  1767. insurance.

  1768. What about

  1769. your soul?

  1770. And that's

  1771. the question

  1772. you have to

  1773. ask yourself

  1774. tonight.

  1775. Because there's

  1776. only one who

  1777. can insure

  1778. your soul.

  1779. And that's

  1780. Jesus.

  1781. you make

  1782. sure then

  1783. that you

  1784. are in

  1785. Jesus,

  1786. trusting in

  1787. Jesus.

  1788. And the

  1789. moment you

  1790. are, you've

  1791. started to

  1792. follow, and

  1793. the moment

  1794. you've started

  1795. to follow, you've

  1796. begun to

  1797. serve.

  1798. And we see

  1799. what the

  1800. outcome is

  1801. here.

  1802. Let us

  1803. pray.

  1804. Lord, our

  1805. God, we

  1806. give thanks

  1807. that your

  1808. word tells

  1809. us how

  1810. things really

  1811. are.

  1812. This

  1813. world tells

  1814. us very

  1815. differently.

  1816. And we

  1817. pray, Lord,

  1818. that we

  1819. might be

  1820. wise to

  1821. what your

  1822. word says,

  1823. that the

  1824. word of

  1825. God may

  1826. regulate and

  1827. rule our

  1828. lives.

  1829. We pray that

  1830. we might not

  1831. lose our

  1832. way by

  1833. being caught

  1834. up in all

  1835. the world's

  1836. trappings,

  1837. but that we

  1838. may seek to

  1839. put Jesus

  1840. first.

  1841. And the

  1842. great promise

  1843. is that if

  1844. we seek

  1845. first the

  1846. kingdom of

  1847. heaven,

  1848. seek first

  1849. the kingdom

  1850. of righteousness,

  1851. seek first the

  1852. kingdom of

  1853. God and his
