  1. Well, we're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 34, verse 7 to 11, the Sing Psalms version.

    Psalms 34:7–11

  3. I'm going to sing from verse 7 to 11.

  4. The angel of the Lord surrounds and guards continually all those who fear and honour him.

  5. He sets his people free.

  6. And then verse 11, it reminds us of what we come together for today.

  7. Come here, my children, gather round and listen to my word, and I will help you understand how you may fear the Lord.

  8. So we're going to sing, we'll stand to sing verse 7 to 11 to God's praise.

  9. The angel of the Lord surrounds and guards continually

  10. All those who fear and honour him, he sets his people free.

  11. Come, taste and see the Lord is good, who trusts in him, is blessed.

  12. Oh, fear the Lord, you saints with need, you will not be oppressed.

  13. Young lions may grow weak and faint and hunger for their food,

  14. But those who wait upon the Lord will not lack any good.

  15. Come here, my children, gather round and listen to my word,

  16. And I will help you understand how you may fear the Lord.

  17. I will join together in prayer just now.

  18. Let us pray.

  19. Our Father in heaven, as we gather in your name today,

  20. We are thankful for this great privilege that we have,

  21. That we are able to come and sing praise to you,

  22. That we are able to come and hear you and your words speaking to us.

  23. And as we read and as we sing and as we do all of these things,

  24. May we know your peace and your blessing over us,

  25. And your help and your strength in all that we do.

  26. We do thank you for this time of family service after a holiday club week.

  27. We thank you for all that was done during the week,

  28. And we have so much to be thankful for,

  29. For all who helped, for all who came along,

  30. For all that was done.

  31. But above all, Lord, that you were with us,

  32. That you were in the midst of it all.

  33. And we pray that you will bless us,

  34. Young and old alike,

  35. To know that joy that you are able to give.

  36. To know that as we see so many athletes in these weeks,

  37. Just now of the Olympics in Paris,

  38. Striving for a gold medal,

  39. But so many are left disappointed.

  40. We thank you that when we come and follow you,

  41. That you never leave us disappointed,

  42. But that you give us that sense of real joy,

  43. Your real presence with us,

  44. And that we are encouraged to look to Jesus,

  45. And follow you with all of our hearts.

  46. And so we give you thanks, O Lord,

  47. For all your goodness to us,

  48. And we ask that as we go on,

  49. Even in this week ahead,

  50. That you will be with us in our homes,

  51. And in our families,

  52. In our communities.

  53. Bless every family here,

  54. Present,

  55. And also tuning in online.

  56. We give you thanks for each one,

  57. And know that there are many going through different needs,

  58. And different challenges at this time.

  59. And so we pray for each one who needs you in different ways,

  60. Times of sadness and sorrow,

  61. Times of sickness,

  62. Times of worry and anxiety.

  63. We do pray, Lord,

  64. For so many who go through these times just now,

  65. And pray that your blessing,

  66. Your peace might be upon them.

  67. And so we ask, Lord,

  68. That as we continue to worship you just now,

  69. That you will guide us in your word,

  70. Guide us in your truth,

  71. Help it to be a light for our lives,

  72. That we would see you and your glory,

  73. The beauty of Jesus,

  74. And that we would come and follow him,

  75. With all of our hearts.

  76. So look down upon us,

  77. Bless us throughout this day,

  78. Be with us,

  79. As we gather for worship this evening as well.

  80. Remember, Kenny I,

  81. As he comes to preach to us,

  82. Pull them and strengthen him in that,

  83. And that throughout this day and in all our days,

  84. We would know your goodness and mercy following us.

  85. So hear our prayers,

  86. And continue with us at this time,

  87. Pardoning all our sin,

  88. As we ask all in Jesus' precious name.

  89. Amen.

  90. I want us to read a few verses together.

  91. Now if you're at the holiday club,

  92. You'll recognize these verses.

  93. It's in Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  94. And we're reading at verse 46 to verse 49.

  95. You'll find this on page 3,

  96. Of the little leaflets you have.

  97. I'm just going to read these few verses together.

  98. Why do you call me Lord, Lord,

  99. And not do what I tell you?

  100. Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them,

  101. I will show you what he is like.

  102. He is like a man building a house,

  103. Who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.

  104. And when a flood arose,

  105. The stream broke against that house,

  106. And could not shake it,

  107. Because it had been well built.

  108. But the one who hears and does not do them,

  109. Is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.

  110. When the stream broke against it,

  111. Immediately it fell,

  112. And the ruin of that house was great.

  113. There we read of the wise and the foolish builder.

  114. And we're going to come back to that in a wee moment.

  115. But I want to say just a few words as a way of introduction just now.

  116. And after this we're going to have a singing.

  117. And if any of the younger ones who maybe want to go to the holiday twinnies,

  118. That's the point that they can go out then.

  119. But we hope that being a family service,

  120. That the majority will be able to stay in.

  121. So who was following the Olympics this week?

  122. Were you tuning in?

  123. Following what was happening?

  124. I don't mean the one in Paris.

  125. I mean the Champions Challenge Olympic Holiday Club

  126. That was taking place here.

  127. With everything that was happening in the hall next door.

  128. We had a great week together.

  129. Doing so many different things.

  130. We had many different events.

  131. We had many different athletes on show.

  132. Some looking more athletic than others.

  133. But a great variety.

  134. And we had crafts and games.

  135. We had medal hunts and drama.

  136. But above all we had,

  137. The central thing was Jesus.

  138. And hearing all about Jesus.

  139. What he has done for us.

  140. And what he does for us.

  141. And every day the different theme was based on Jesus.

  142. And Jesus as a coach.

  143. Jesus as a first aider.

  144. There was a teammate.

  145. There was a substitute.

  146. And then on the Friday we had the champion.

  147. So we're looking at Jesus in all of these different ways.

  148. Now the Paris Olympics, they're still going on.

  149. But in another week they'll come to a close.

  150. And when the Olympics come to a close,

  151. They have a big closing ceremony.

  152. And so today is a little like a closing ceremony.

  153. For our Olympics.

  154. For our week of Olympics.

  155. But I don't want us to be sad.

  156. As things come to an end this week.

  157. I want us to be happy.

  158. Happy about all that we did and all that we heard.

  159. And there was a story we heard on Friday.

  160. About a man called Eric Liddell.

  161. Now he won Olympic gold in Paris.

  162. But it wasn't this week.

  163. It was a hundred years ago.

  164. Back in 1924.

  165. I'm sure many people here are familiar with the film

  166. Chariots of Fire.

  167. Based on the story of Eric Liddell.

  168. And the amazing thing about him was,

  169. He was a Christian who honoured God.

  170. He put God first in everything he did.

  171. So the event he wanted to be in, he wasn't.

  172. And yet he still won gold in the 400 metres.

  173. And it's amazing that a hundred years later,

  174. We're still talking about him.

  175. And thinking about what he did.

  176. How he stood up for his faith.

  177. And I hope that's what it will be like for ourselves

  178. As we come away from our holiday club.

  179. That in years to come,

  180. We will speak about all that we've learned and heard and seen this week.

  181. And go on giving praise and glory to God.

  182. And sharing about the good news of Jesus.

  183. And today we're going to look at some of the highlights of the week.

  184. We're going to look at some of the things,

  185. The passages that we were looking at.

  186. And some of the themes that we were thinking about.

  187. But they're all based around our memory verse.

  188. Now, look up to me just now for a minute.

  189. Who remembers the memory verse?

  190. Do you want to say it with me?

  191. Shall we say it together?

  192. So everybody can hear what we were learning.

  193. Right, let's go.

  194. If anyone would come after me.

  195. He will deny himself.

  196. Take up his cross.

  197. And follow me.

  198. Excellent.

  199. 23.

  200. Brilliant.

  201. All remembered.

  202. And there's no words up on the screen anywhere to help you there.

  203. So, well remembered.

  204. That's the verse that was our memory verse for the week.

  205. And as we were going through the week,

  206. the word of God was always central to everything that we were doing.

  207. So we think of the Olympics,

  208. and they have the Olympic flame burning for the whole time

  209. that the Olympics is going on.

  210. That's the way it was for us with God's word.

  211. It was like the word of God was the light in the midst of everything that we were doing.

  212. And there's a psalm that tells us about that.

  213. It's Psalm 119 and verse 105.

  214. It says,

  215. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a lamp to my path.

  216. Do you remember what the craft was on Monday, anybody?

  217. What did we do on Monday?

  218. The torch, wasn't it?

  219. The Olympic torch.

  220. Well, look what I've got here.

  221. Do you remember seeing this during the week?

  222. Yeah?

  223. Well, the rest of people here who weren't at the holiday club wouldn't have seen this.

  224. This is an Olympic torch.

  225. And on the top of it is where the fire goes.

  226. So this is a real Olympic torch.

  227. And we think of that, it's the fire that keeps burning.

  228. And we want to think of Jesus as that fire, that light to the world that keeps burning.

  229. We were singing one of the songs, and it was,

  230. Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning.

  231. And that's what we were looking at during the week.

  232. And we were so thankful that as Jesus was with us during the week,

  233. He was keeping us going and keeping us looking to His word and encouraging us through it.

  234. All around that sense of following Jesus, denying ourselves, and following Him.

  235. And so we're going to look at three different things to help us understand what that means.

  236. But before we do, we're going to sing.

  237. We're going to think about three things.

  238. Listen, look, and live.

  239. That's the three things we're going to look at today.

  240. But before we come to the first one, we're going to sing Psalm 145.

  241. Again, let's sing Psalm's version, Psalm 145.

  242. And we'll sing from verse 15 to 21.

  243. And as I say, during this singing, if any of the younger ones would like to go out to tweenies,

  244. you can do so during this singing.

  245. All eyes are raised expectantly to you, and in due season you supply their food.

  246. You open wide your hand to all that live and satisfy their needs with what is good.

  247. We'll sing from verse 15 to 21 to God's praise.

  248. All eyes are raised expectantly to you, and in due season you supply their food.

  249. You open wide your hand to all that live and satisfy their needs with what is good.

  250. The Lord is just and good in all his ways.

  251. He shows his love to all that he has made.

  252. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call in through to him for aid.

  253. The hopes of those who fear him he fulfills.

  254. He hears their cry, saves them from distress.

  255. The Lord protects all those who love his name.

  256. But slays all those who practice wickedness.

  257. My lips will frame a psalm of thanks to God.

  258. My mouth will speak forever in his praise.

  259. Let every creature magnify the Lord.

  260. And praise his holy name now and always.

  261. Amen.

  262. Amen.

  263. Well, I want us to think about our first part this morning together.

  264. We're thinking of listening.

  265. Listening on Monday, we're thinking about the coach and how we have to listen to the coach.

  266. That's the first part of what we're looking at together today, the idea of listening.

  267. And this is based on that reading that we had together in Luke chapter 6, the one who built

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  268. his house upon the rock and the one who built his house upon the sand, the ground without

  269. foundation.

  270. Now, a good number of years ago in Glasgow, there was a preacher who was preaching at Glasgow

  271. Green.

  272. Glasgow Green is a big park in Glasgow and it's quite near to the river there, the river Clyde.

  273. And he was preaching about the gospel, about Jesus.

  274. And after he'd finished preaching, there was a man in the crowd who stood up and wanted to speak.

  275. And so they let him speak.

  276. And what he started to say was that he didn't believe anything that the preacher had said.

  277. He was saying, I don't believe in heaven.

  278. I don't believe in judgment.

  279. I don't believe in anything of these things.

  280. It's not true.

  281. And I don't believe in God, he said.

  282. I've never seen him.

  283. I can't believe in God.

  284. And then he sat down.

  285. And then another man got up.

  286. And he started to speak.

  287. And he started to speak in a funny way.

  288. He said, I don't believe that there's a river near here.

  289. I've never seen it.

  290. I don't believe that it's there.

  291. And he said, you tell me that there are trees and grass all around us here.

  292. I don't believe it.

  293. I've never seen them.

  294. And he said, you see that there are people all around me here.

  295. There's a large crowd.

  296. I said, I don't believe it.

  297. And he said, you maybe wonder how I can say these things or why I'm saying these things.

  298. You must think that I'm daft.

  299. But then he went on to say, you know why I can say these things?

  300. It's because I'm blind.

  301. I can't see anything with my eyes.

  302. But he said, but I know God.

  303. And I know that God is real.

  304. And looking at the first man who had spoken, he said to him, you cannot see him because you're spiritually blind.

  305. But he said, there is a God.

  306. And you need him.

  307. Who of these two men would you listen to?

  308. There was one who was wise.

  309. And there was one who was foolish.

  310. Well, that's exactly what Jesus is speaking about here as he speaks about these two men.

  311. One who built his house upon the rock and one who built his house upon the ground with no foundation.

  312. He was speaking to a large crowd here.

  313. And as he was speaking, he was speaking to them in this way that they were to listen to what he was saying.

  314. But he was saying, you call me Lord, Lord, and yet you don't listen.

  315. And this week when we were thinking of Jesus as the coach, we needed to listen to Jesus as the coach.

  316. But these people were saying like, yes, coach, yes, coach.

  317. But they weren't doing anything that they were being told.

  318. And so he describes it in this way.

  319. He uses the illustration of these two builders.

  320. And the question behind it all is, are we listening to Jesus today?

  321. Are we listening to what he says?

  322. One of these builders was wise.

  323. Where did he build his house?

  324. What did he build it on?

  325. Do you remember what we were thinking about during the week?

  326. Where did the wise man build his house?

  327. Upon the rock, wasn't it?

  328. And where did the foolish man, silly Billy as we was called, where did he build his house?

  329. On the sand.

  330. So who was wise?

  331. Who was foolish?

  332. He was wise, wasn't he?

  333. One built upon the rock.

  334. He was wise.

  335. Because as Jesus describes here, when the flood came, the only house that stood was the one that was built on the rock.

  336. The one that was built on the sand just got washed away.

  337. And the Bible often speaks about wise and foolish people.

  338. In Psalm 14, for example, in verse 1, it says there,

  339. The fool says in his heart, what?

  340. There is no God.

  341. Like that man at Glasgow Green who stood up to say that, I can't believe in God.

  342. I've never seen him.

  343. He's a fool.

  344. That's what the Bible says.

  345. The fool says in his heart, there is no God.

  346. But the wise, we build our house upon the rock.

  347. The rock, that is Jesus.

  348. We listen to the coach.

  349. And in Ephesians chapter 5, it says,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  350. Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making the best use of the time.

  351. That's encouraging us to listen to Jesus, make the best use of the time.

  352. So it's so important for us that as we come to worship God and to learn about him,

  353. that we do that first and foremost, that we listen to what he is saying.

  354. As Jesus says here,

  355. You call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I tell you.

  356. It's like listening to the coach and just going and doing your own thing.

  357. It's foolish.

  358. But let's be wise and listen to the coach.

  359. Listen to Jesus.

  360. Listen to what he's saying to us as he says,

  361. Come and follow me.

  362. Deny yourself.

  363. Take up your cross and follow me.

  364. So are we listening to the coach?

  365. Are we listening to Jesus today?

  366. That's the first thing that we're thinking about, that we were thinking about during the week.

  367. Well, to help us further look at this, we want to think about what he does for us.

  368. And we want to read again.

  369. We're going to read our next reading, which is in Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  370. And this is at verse 39 to verse 47.

  371. There's so many different parts that we could read for what Jesus has done for us.

  372. So many things that we thought about during the week.

  373. But I think the best place to read about Jesus and what he has done for us

  374. is to think about Jesus at the cross.

  375. And so we're thinking of him here in verse 39.

  376. Here Jesus has been put on the cross to die for his people.

  377. And either side of them, there's two criminals who are also being put to death.

  378. And in verse 39, it says,

  379. One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying,

  380. Are you not the Christ?

  381. Save yourself and us.

  382. But the other rebuked him, saying,

  383. Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

  384. And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds.

  385. But this man has done nothing wrong.

  386. And he said,

  387. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  388. And he said to him,

  389. Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.

  390. And we read on,

  391. It was now about the sixth hour,

  392. and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,

  393. while the sun's light failed.

  394. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

  395. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said,

  396. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.

  397. And having said this, he breathed his last.

  398. Now, when the centurion saw what had taken place,

  399. he praised God, saying,

  400. Certainly, this man was innocent.

  401. Well, we want to think about Jesus now and what he has done for us.

  402. And in this way, we're thinking about looking to Jesus.

  403. We want to listen to him first of all,

  404. but now we want to look and see what he has done for us.

  405. When Jesus was in this world,

  406. so many people saw him.

  407. So many people saw him doing amazing things.

  408. And during the week, we were thinking of some of them.

  409. As we look through the Bible,

  410. you see many different things that Jesus did for his people.

  411. As we had the sporting theme this week,

  412. we were thinking of people who get injured in sport,

  413. and they need the first aider to come on and to help them.

  414. And we saw a story of how Jesus healed a Roman centurion's servant

  415. who was unwell.

  416. Jesus did amazing things.

  417. We heard how Jesus fed more than 5,000 people in one sitting.

  418. And it was an amazing miracle that happened there.

  419. And there are so many other accounts of what Jesus did for people

  420. in different places, how he healed, how he helped,

  421. how he did amazing things.

  422. But what so often amazed people was the things that he said.

  423. His teaching, his preaching.

  424. People marveled at it.

  425. They saw these words that he was saying.

  426. They were thinking, this is astonishing.

  427. This is amazing, the things that he is telling us.

  428. And he was telling them about what he had come to do to help them.

  429. We see us all as sinners as we are,

  430. but he came to help us.

  431. Our greatest injury is sin.

  432. But he has come to help us.

  433. And the most amazing place to look and see what Jesus has done for us

  434. and how much he loved us is this place where we read of Jesus on the cross

  435. as he died for our sins.

  436. And so many people were looking on and seeing Jesus on the cross.

  437. And on either side of him were these two criminals.

  438. And one looked at him and mocked.

  439. He was joking at Jesus, saying things like,

  440. if you are the Christ, save yourself and us.

  441. He didn't realize who he was.

  442. He didn't understand who he was.

  443. But the other looked and pleaded with him.

  444. He saw that this man was innocent.

  445. He's done nothing wrong.

  446. And then he said these amazing words.

  447. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  448. Amazing words from that criminal.

  449. Remember me.

  450. And even more amazing is what Jesus said to him.

  451. Truly I say to you today,

  452. you will be with me in paradise.

  453. In the midst of the darkness of the cross,

  454. we are reminded of why Jesus came.

  455. He came to save.

  456. He is our substitute.

  457. He went in our place.

  458. What we couldn't do ourselves,

  459. he did for us.

  460. He died on the cross.

  461. That for all who believe in him,

  462. we might have life through him.

  463. A little boy once came to his father

  464. and jumped up on his knee and sat on his knee.

  465. And he asked him a question.

  466. He said to him,

  467. Dad, is your soul insured?

  468. Now, what's your soul, first of all?

  469. Well, your soul is our life,

  470. our very being.

  471. It's something we can't see,

  472. but it's what keeps us alive.

  473. What God has given to us all,

  474. the breath of life,

  475. is like our soul.

  476. It makes us understand and think

  477. and live and breathe.

  478. God has given us a soul.

  479. And insurance is something you put in place

  480. so that if anything happens,

  481. you're not left without.

  482. So if you crash your car,

  483. for example,

  484. you don't lose out if you're insured.

  485. You get your money back

  486. because it's insured.

  487. And so this is what was troubling this little boy.

  488. He came to his father and says,

  489. Dad, is your soul insured?

  490. And his father asked,

  491. Where's this question come from?

  492. Why do you ask that question?

  493. And the boy said,

  494. Well, I heard Uncle John speaking

  495. and he was saying that you have your house insured,

  496. that you have all your barns insured,

  497. that you have your life insured,

  498. but he was worried

  499. that you didn't have your soul insured.

  500. And he was afraid that you would lose it.

  501. And the father was shocked

  502. because he had a big house.

  503. He had lots of land and barns.

  504. He had all of these things.

  505. He had insurance to look after his family

  506. if anything happened to him.

  507. But the one thing that was most needed

  508. was his soul to be insured.

  509. And it wasn't

  510. because he didn't trust in Jesus.

  511. And through that little boy asking that question,

  512. he began to think about this.

  513. What was important in life?

  514. What was the most precious thing?

  515. It wasn't his barns and his land and his house.

  516. It was his soul.

  517. And he began to realize,

  518. Jesus is the only insurance I need.

  519. And so he put his trust in Jesus.

  520. And as we look at the cross,

  521. we see how Jesus is our insurance,

  522. how he is our guarantee,

  523. how because he died on the cross,

  524. he was our substitute there.

  525. And if we put our trust in him,

  526. our soul,

  527. our life is safe

  528. for now

  529. and for eternity.

  530. Another little story.

  531. There was a little girl

  532. who was very unwell.

  533. And she had a very serious illness

  534. that meant that she needed to get

  535. a blood transfusion.

  536. That's her own blood wasn't healthy,

  537. so she needed other blood

  538. put into her body.

  539. But it couldn't just be any blood.

  540. It needed to be a particular kind of blood.

  541. It needed to be from someone

  542. who had had this illness before

  543. and who had recovered.

  544. And it needed to be the same type of blood

  545. as hers.

  546. And she had a little brother.

  547. A brother who had had the same illness

  548. and who had the same blood as her.

  549. And so the doctor came and sat with the little boy

  550. and said,

  551. your sister's not well

  552. and we need your blood to help her.

  553. And he asked,

  554. will you give her your blood?

  555. And the little boy nearly started crying.

  556. He was sitting there

  557. thinking about this question.

  558. Will you give your sister your blood?

  559. And then he said,

  560. yes.

  561. I'll give my sister my blood

  562. if it'll make her better.

  563. And so they were taken into the operating room

  564. and they were both put on beds

  565. beside each other.

  566. And they looked at each other.

  567. The little girl was weak and frail.

  568. The boy was strong and healthy.

  569. And the boy smiled at his sister.

  570. And as the nurse then started to take blood

  571. from the little boy,

  572. his smile started to disappear.

  573. And he started to look quite sad.

  574. And after a little while,

  575. when it was nearly done,

  576. he asked the doctor a question.

  577. He said,

  578. Doctor,

  579. when do I die?

  580. And the doctor realized then

  581. that he hadn't explained fully

  582. what giving blood meant.

  583. It was only to give blood

  584. to help his sister.

  585. Not that he would die.

  586. But he thought

  587. by giving his blood to his sister,

  588. he would die himself.

  589. And the amazing thing is,

  590. he was willing to do it.

  591. Because his sister

  592. was so precious to him.

  593. Well, the little boy

  594. didn't die.

  595. They both survived

  596. and lived.

  597. But when we look

  598. at the cross,

  599. when we think of Jesus

  600. there on the cross,

  601. he gave

  602. his blood

  603. for us.

  604. He died

  605. for us.

  606. We needed

  607. a substitute.

  608. And he was the only one

  609. who could come

  610. in our place.

  611. And he gave

  612. his life

  613. for us.

  614. Isn't that amazing?

  615. That he would do that

  616. for you

  617. and for me.

  618. So there was

  619. the sad bit.

  620. When we think of

  621. Jesus

  622. dying

  623. on the cross.

  624. But

  625. it doesn't

  626. end there.

  627. And we want

  628. to just think about

  629. one more thing.

  630. And we want to read

  631. again

  632. together

  633. in Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  634. chapter 24.

  635. The next

  636. chapter along.

  637. you find

  638. this on

  639. page 6

  640. and 7.

  641. We're reading

  642. two different

  643. parts

  644. of it.

  645. It's all

  646. about the

  647. story of

  648. the two

  649. on the road

  650. to Emmaus.

  651. An amazing

  652. story.

  653. But we'll just

  654. read a part

  655. of it.

  656. So this is

  657. after

  658. Jesus

  659. had been

  660. put to

  661. death.

  662. It's the

  663. third day.

  664. And people

  665. have started

  666. talking about

  667. Jesus.

  668. That he

  669. is risen.

  670. But then

  671. we come

  672. alongside

  673. these two

  674. on the road

  675. to Emmaus.

  676. That very

  677. day two

  678. of them

  679. were going

  680. to a

  681. village

  682. named

  683. Emmaus

  684. about

  685. seven

  686. miles

  687. from

  688. Jerusalem.

  689. And they

  690. were talking

  691. with each

  692. other about

  693. all these

  694. things that

  695. had happened.

  696. While they

  697. were talking

  698. and discussing

  699. together

  700. Jesus himself

  701. drew near

  702. and went

  703. with them.

  704. But their

  705. eyes were

  706. kept from

  707. recognizing him.

  708. Then we

  709. jump to

  710. verse 28.

  711. So they

  712. drew near

  713. to the

  714. village to

  715. which they

  716. were going.

  717. He acted

  718. as if he

  719. was going

  720. further.

  721. But they

  722. urged him

  723. strongly saying

  724. stay with

  725. us for

  726. it is

  727. toward evening

  728. and the

  729. day is

  730. now far

  731. spent.

  732. So he

  733. went in

  734. to stay

  735. with them.

  736. When he

  737. was at

  738. the table

  739. with them

  740. he took

  741. the bread

  742. and blessed

  743. and broke

  744. it and gave

  745. it to

  746. them.

  747. And their

  748. eyes were

  749. opened and

  750. they recognized

  751. him and he

  752. vanished from

  753. their sight.

  754. They said

  755. to each

  756. other,

  757. did not

  758. our hearts

  759. burn within

  760. us while

  761. he talked

  762. to us on

  763. the road,

  764. while he

  765. opened to

  766. us the

  767. scriptures?

  768. And they

  769. rose that

  770. same hour

  771. and returned

  772. to Jerusalem.

  773. And they

  774. found the

  775. eleven and

  776. those who

  777. were with

  778. them gathered

  779. together saying

  780. the Lord

  781. has risen

  782. indeed and

  783. he has

  784. appeared to

  785. Simon.

  786. Then they

  787. told what

  788. had happened

  789. on the road

  790. and how

  791. he was

  792. known to

  793. them in

  794. the breaking

  795. of bread.

  796. An amazing

  797. story of

  798. how Jesus

  799. came and

  800. appeared to

  801. these two

  802. on the road

  803. to Emmaus.

  804. Now after

  805. the cross,

  806. after Jesus

  807. died, his

  808. body was

  809. placed in

  810. a tomb.

  811. But on the

  812. third day,

  813. there was no

  814. sign of

  815. his body.

  816. Those who

  817. had followed

  818. Jesus, they

  819. were heart

  820. broken.

  821. Jesus died

  822. on the

  823. cross.

  824. cross.

  825. But that

  826. wasn't the

  827. end.

  828. You see, they

  829. hadn't listened

  830. properly to

  831. all that

  832. Jesus had

  833. said.

  834. If they

  835. had listened,

  836. they would

  837. have known

  838. that he

  839. died, we

  840. would die,

  841. but that on

  842. the third

  843. day, he

  844. would rise

  845. again.

  846. What's the

  847. biggest surprise

  848. you've ever

  849. had?

  850. Maybe you

  851. walk into a

  852. room and you

  853. see a

  854. spider.

  855. You get a

  856. surprise, you're

  857. frightened, you

  858. get a shock.

  859. It could be

  860. a shock

  861. result in

  862. athletics or

  863. football or

  864. something like

  865. that.

  866. It leaves you

  867. surprised.

  868. Does anybody

  869. remember this

  870. from Friday?

  871. Second place,

  872. that's what I

  873. got in a

  874. two-man race.

  875. Do you

  876. remember who

  877. beat me?

  878. Anybody

  879. remember who

  880. beat me?

  881. Kenny

  882. I.

  883. Embarrassing,

  884. isn't it?

  885. The right

  886. shock, that.

  887. Just the

  888. two of us

  889. in a race

  890. and he

  891. won.

  892. I mean, my

  893. goodness, come

  894. on.

  895. You get all

  896. kinds of

  897. surprises in

  898. life.

  899. But when we

  900. think about

  901. those who

  902. followed Jesus,

  903. those who

  904. loved Jesus,

  905. when they

  906. thought that

  907. he had died,

  908. the greatest

  909. surprise that

  910. they got was

  911. that Jesus

  912. was alive.

  913. They thought

  914. he had died,

  915. but he was

  916. risen.

  917. And so

  918. they met

  919. him in

  920. different

  921. places.

  922. And it's

  923. highlighted for

  924. us in this

  925. story of two

  926. people traveling

  927. on the road

  928. from Jerusalem

  929. to Emmaus.

  930. They were

  931. heartbroken.

  932. They were

  933. downcast.

  934. They thought

  935. their hope

  936. had gone.

  937. And they

  938. start speaking

  939. with a stranger

  940. as it was

  941. who came

  942. alongside them,

  943. telling him

  944. everything that

  945. had happened

  946. in Jerusalem

  947. and how it

  948. was the third

  949. day and how

  950. they had hoped

  951. that he had

  952. come to save

  953. his people.

  954. And their

  955. hope was

  956. gone.

  957. They were

  958. just so

  959. heartbroken.

  960. But then

  961. Jesus started

  962. to speak to

  963. them.

  964. He started

  965. to open up

  966. the word

  967. to them.

  968. And he

  969. showed them

  970. everything about

  971. the scriptures

  972. in the Old

  973. Testament that

  974. was telling

  975. them about

  976. Jesus and

  977. how he had

  978. to come.

  979. And what

  980. happened to

  981. them?

  982. Instead of

  983. being heartbroken,

  984. they come to

  985. the point where

  986. their heart is

  987. burning.

  988. within them.

  989. They're so

  990. excited.

  991. They're filled

  992. with joy.

  993. Jesus is

  994. alive.

  995. He is

  996. risen.

  997. And we

  998. need to

  999. tell others

  1000. about this.

  1001. It's an

  1002. amazing thing.

  1003. And so they

  1004. run back.

  1005. They run back

  1006. to tell their

  1007. friends,

  1008. we have seen

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. He is alive.

  1011. And they

  1012. say, we

  1013. know.

  1014. He's up

  1015. here to

  1016. Simon as

  1017. well.

  1018. And they

  1019. were rejoicing.

  1020. They were so

  1021. glad.

  1022. They'd

  1023. gone from

  1024. being almost

  1025. downcast,

  1026. beaten,

  1027. to being

  1028. upbeat and

  1029. full of

  1030. joy.

  1031. There's been

  1032. so many

  1033. amazing races

  1034. in the

  1035. Olympics this

  1036. week, so

  1037. many amazing

  1038. events.

  1039. Maybe you

  1040. saw this

  1041. week the

  1042. winner of

  1043. the men's

  1044. triathlon.

  1045. He was a

  1046. British man

  1047. called

  1048. Alec E.

  1049. And close

  1050. to the end

  1051. of the

  1052. race, he'd

  1053. done his

  1054. swim, he'd

  1055. done his

  1056. cycle, and

  1057. now he was

  1058. doing the

  1059. running part

  1060. of the race.

  1061. He was in

  1062. second place

  1063. and he was

  1064. starting.

  1065. He was

  1066. really struggling.

  1067. He was

  1068. finding it

  1069. hard going.

  1070. And instead

  1071. of thinking,

  1072. could he get

  1073. first, people

  1074. started to

  1075. wonder, would

  1076. he even get

  1077. second?

  1078. Because he

  1079. seemed to

  1080. be just

  1081. getting slower

  1082. and people

  1083. were catching

  1084. up with him.

  1085. But he

  1086. didn't give

  1087. up.

  1088. And he

  1089. was saying

  1090. afterwards, I

  1091. wanted to

  1092. cross the

  1093. finish line

  1094. knowing I'd

  1095. given a

  1096. hundred

  1097. percent.

  1098. So he

  1099. started to

  1100. push himself.

  1101. And then he

  1102. heard somebody

  1103. shouting in

  1104. the crowd at

  1105. the side, a

  1106. man called

  1107. Alan Brownlee.

  1108. Alan Brownlee,

  1109. when the Olympics

  1110. were in London

  1111. 12 years ago,

  1112. he won the

  1113. gold in the

  1114. very same

  1115. event.

  1116. And he

  1117. heard this

  1118. man, he

  1119. saw this

  1120. man shouting

  1121. at him, and

  1122. he was saying,

  1123. keep going,

  1124. anything can

  1125. happen.

  1126. And if

  1127. you saw

  1128. the race,

  1129. you saw

  1130. how suddenly

  1131. he almost

  1132. just started

  1133. running faster

  1134. and faster.

  1135. He went

  1136. past the

  1137. man who

  1138. was in

  1139. first place

  1140. at that

  1141. point, and

  1142. he just

  1143. seemed to

  1144. get ahead

  1145. and ahead

  1146. and ahead.

  1147. And he

  1148. went on

  1149. to win

  1150. gold.

  1151. He was

  1152. encouraged.

  1153. He was

  1154. strengthened.

  1155. And that's

  1156. what God's

  1157. word does

  1158. for us.

  1159. It reminds

  1160. us that yes,

  1161. there is

  1162. sadness and

  1163. sorrow that

  1164. Jesus had to

  1165. die for

  1166. our sin.

  1167. But there

  1168. is also

  1169. great joy

  1170. that he

  1171. has risen.

  1172. And in

  1173. a book of

  1174. the Bible

  1175. called

  1176. Hebrews,

  1177. it says

  1178. this,

  1179. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:1

  1180. chapter 12,

  1181. verse 1,

  1182. therefore,

  1183. since we

  1184. are surrounded

  1185. by so

  1186. great a

  1187. cloud of

  1188. witnesses,

  1189. let us

  1190. lay aside

  1191. every weight

  1192. and sin

  1193. which clings

  1194. so closely

  1195. and let us

  1196. run with

  1197. endurance the

  1198. race that

  1199. is set

  1200. before us,

  1201. looking to

  1202. Jesus,

  1203. the founder

  1204. and perfecter

  1205. of our

  1206. faith,

  1207. who for

  1208. the joy

  1209. that was

  1210. set before

  1211. him endured

  1212. the cross,

  1213. despising the

  1214. shame,

  1215. and is

  1216. seated at

  1217. the right

  1218. hand of

  1219. the throne

  1220. of God.

  1221. Jesus

  1222. encouraged

  1223. these two

  1224. on the road

  1225. to Emmaus.

  1226. And we

  1227. are surrounded

  1228. by people

  1229. who encourage

  1230. us along

  1231. the way

  1232. in this

  1233. race.

  1234. And so

  1235. as we

  1236. think about

  1237. coming away

  1238. from our

  1239. Olympic week,

  1240. let us

  1241. encourage

  1242. one another.

  1243. Let us

  1244. see Jesus

  1245. as the

  1246. champion,

  1247. the one

  1248. we need

  1249. to believe

  1250. in with

  1251. all our

  1252. hearts.

  1253. Our memory

  1254. verse said,

  1255. if anyone

  1256. would come

  1257. after me,

  1258. let him

  1259. deny himself,

  1260. take up

  1261. his cross

  1262. daily,

  1263. and follow

  1264. me.

  1265. Wouldn't

  1266. be great

  1267. if all

  1268. of us

  1269. go away

  1270. from this

  1271. week

  1272. following

  1273. Jesus,

  1274. rejoicing,

  1275. not heartbroken,

  1276. but with

  1277. burning hearts,

  1278. rejoicing in

  1279. Jesus,

  1280. and telling

  1281. others about

  1282. Jesus,

  1283. so that the

  1284. day will

  1285. come when

  1286. Jesus will

  1287. reward us

  1288. all with

  1289. the gold

  1290. medal,

  1291. with the

  1292. crown,

  1293. for following

  1294. him with

  1295. all our

  1296. heart.

  1297. another of

  1298. our songs

  1299. that we

  1300. sang

  1301. reminded us

  1302. that we

  1303. are blessed.

  1304. I'm so

  1305. blessed,

  1306. the song

  1307. says,

  1308. when I

  1309. have you,

  1310. Lord.

  1311. So let's

  1312. come away,

  1313. let us

  1314. close our

  1315. ceremony

  1316. today,

  1317. let's close

  1318. with joy,

  1319. because

  1320. Jesus is

  1321. risen,

  1322. he is

  1323. our champion,

  1324. let us

  1325. listen to

  1326. him,

  1327. let us

  1328. look at

  1329. what he's

  1330. done for

  1331. us,

  1332. and let

  1333. us live

  1334. for him

  1335. every day.

  1336. Let us

  1337. pray.

  1338. Our

  1339. Father in

  1340. heaven,

  1341. we do give

  1342. you thanks

  1343. for all that

  1344. you have

  1345. done for

  1346. us,

  1347. and how

  1348. you speak

  1349. to us,

  1350. and help

  1351. us as we

  1352. go from

  1353. here today,

  1354. to live

  1355. for you

  1356. with all

  1357. our hearts,

  1358. as we look

  1359. for your

  1360. help and

  1361. your strength,

  1362. your encouragement

  1363. in all of

  1364. these things,

  1365. we ask in

  1366. your precious

  1367. name,

  1368. Amen.

  1369. We're going

  1370. to conclude

  1371. by singing

  1372. to God's

  1373. praise in

  1374. Psalm 146,

  1375. Psalm 146,

  1376. we're going

  1377. to sing from

  1378. verse 1 to

  1379. verse 6,

  1380. it's the

  1381. Scottish

  1382. Psalter

  1383. version,

  1384. I'll just

  1385. check with

  1386. the percent,

  1387. I've got two

  1388. different,

  1389. Scottish

  1390. Psalter,

  1391. you've got

  1392. music,

  1393. let's sing

  1394. Psalms,

  1395. so it's

  1396. the Scottish

  1397. Psalter on

  1398. one thing

  1399. and the

  1400. sing

  1401. Psalms on

  1402. the other,

  1403. I think

  1404. we'd better

  1405. go with

  1406. what the

  1407. presenter has,

  1408. so the

  1409. presenter has

  1410. sing

  1411. Psalms,

  1412. sorry for

  1413. that,

  1414. so we'll

  1415. sing,

  1416. it's Psalm

  1417. 146,

  1418. the sing

  1419. Psalms,

  1420. I think

  1421. it's the

  1422. Scottish

  1423. Psalter that's

  1424. on the

  1425. booklet,

  1426. but it's

  1427. the sing

  1428. Psalms the

  1429. presenter has,

  1430. so we'll

  1431. use that,

  1432. praise the

  1433. Lord my

  1434. soul,

  1435. O praise

  1436. him,

  1437. I'll extol

  1438. him all

  1439. my days,

  1440. while I

  1441. live to

  1442. God my

  1443. Saviour from

  1444. my heart,

  1445. I will

  1446. sing praise,

  1447. we'll sing

  1448. these verses

  1449. to God's

  1450. praise,

  1451. praise the

  1452. Lord my

  1453. soul,

  1454. O praise

  1455. him,

  1456. I'll

  1457. extol

  1458. him all

  1459. my days,

  1460. while I

  1461. live to

  1462. God my

  1463. God my

  1464. Saviour,

  1465. from my

  1466. heart I

  1467. will sing

  1468. praise,

  1469. do not

  1470. put your

  1471. trust in

  1472. princes,

  1473. mortal men

  1474. who cannot

  1475. save,

  1476. all their

  1477. plans will

  1478. come to

  1479. nothing,

  1480. when they

  1481. perish in

  1482. the grave,

  1483. blessed is

  1484. the one

  1485. who truly

  1486. looks for

  1487. help to

  1488. Jacob's

  1489. God,

  1490. blessed is

  1491. the one

  1492. who places

  1493. all his

  1494. hope upon

  1495. the Lord,

  1496. he who

  1497. made the

  1498. earth and

  1499. heaven,

  1500. and the

  1501. seas with

  1502. all their

  1503. store,

  1504. he who

  1505. keeps his

  1506. every promise,

  1507. through his

  1508. faithful

  1509. evermore.

  1510. After the

  1511. benediction,

  1512. I'll go to

  1513. the main

  1514. door,

  1515. I think the

  1516. children can

  1517. go out this

  1518. door to my

  1519. left here,

  1520. and hopefully

  1521. as many as

  1522. possible can

  1523. come through

  1524. next door for

  1525. a cup of tea

  1526. and to see

  1527. and hear a

  1528. little bit more

  1529. from the

  1530. children as

  1531. to what was

  1532. happening in

  1533. the holiday

  1534. club.

  1535. We'll close

  1536. just now with

  1537. the benediction.

  1538. now may

  1539. grace,

  1540. mercy,

  1541. and peace

  1542. from God,

  1543. Father,

  1544. Son,

  1545. and Holy

  1546. Spirit rest

  1547. upon and

  1548. abide with

  1549. you all now

  1550. and forever

  1551. more.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.
