  1. But we'll begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 57, in the Sing Psalms version.

  3. Psalm 57, page 74 of the psalm books.

  4. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 5, the tune is Selma.

  5. Have mercy on me, Lord, to you my soul holds fast.

  6. Your covering wings will shelter me until the dangers pass.

  7. I cry to God, most high, to God who answers me.

  8. For he fulfills his purposes for me most perfectly.

  9. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5 to God's praise.

  10. My wings will shelter me until the dangers pass.

  11. I cry to God, most high, to God who answers me.

  12. For he fulfills his purposes for me most perfectly.

  13. He sends his help from heaven and sends me from above.

  14. He will be close to see my light, no senses to above.

  15. I live with savage peace.

  16. I dwell in my own strong.

  17. With men who speak with piercing words,

  18. A sharp sword is their tongue.

  19. above the highest heaven, O God, exalted thee,

  20. And over all the earth below,

  21. His greater majesty.

  22. Let's unite our hearts in a word of prayer.

  23. Let us pray.

  24. Our Father in heaven, as we come before you again this evening hour,

  25. we do thank you that we can come with boldness,

  26. that we can come with confidence to you,

  27. to that throne of grace.

  28. But we come humbly before you as well,

  29. recognizing who you are,

  30. recognizing that you are a sovereign God over all,

  31. all of creation and all of your people,

  32. that you are the one who is all-powerful and almighty.

  33. And yet we thank you for the confidence of the psalmist

  34. in these words that we have sung,

  35. that he cries to God, most high,

  36. to God who answers me.

  37. And we pray, Lord,

  38. that we would have that assurance and confidence,

  39. even as we offer up our prayers together here,

  40. but also in our own personal devotions to you,

  41. in our times of prayer,

  42. in our own quietness,

  43. in our homes,

  44. or whatever we might offer up prayer to you,

  45. in the quietness of our hearts,

  46. that we would come in that way,

  47. recognizing that we are in that relationship with you,

  48. that we speak to you as the Lord and God of heaven,

  49. but also to the one who is our Father.

  50. And in that, there is such a bond,

  51. a wonderful, loving relationship with your children as we are.

  52. And we thank you that you do listen,

  53. that you do hear our prayers,

  54. and that in our prayers, Lord,

  55. you are able to fulfill your purposes

  56. and fulfill them, as the psalmist says,

  57. for me most perfectly.

  58. And in that, Lord,

  59. we seek your will to be done.

  60. For your will is that perfection.

  61. And teach us, Lord,

  62. not to seek our own will,

  63. not to have our own desires fulfilled,

  64. but that all that we do

  65. and all that we seek to do

  66. for ourselves or for others,

  67. that it would be according

  68. to your great and mighty purposes.

  69. And we do thank you for the fact

  70. that you are the one who sends help,

  71. as the psalmist says,

  72. help from heaven above,

  73. that you send your truth and love,

  74. and that we have your word

  75. to remind us of that.

  76. And as we hear from it again this evening,

  77. may we see it as your truth,

  78. and may it speak to us

  79. that full truth,

  80. not just our own thoughts, Lord,

  81. but that they would be your words

  82. that we hear,

  83. the words that remind us

  84. of your steadfast love

  85. towards your people,

  86. the strength that you are able

  87. to give in our weariness,

  88. that hope that you give

  89. in the midst of all that dismay

  90. that surrounds us at times.

  91. And we do pray, Lord,

  92. that you will hear us all

  93. as we offer up our prayers

  94. and hear us as your people

  95. far and wide.

  96. For we thank you that today,

  97. and especially as it's your day,

  98. the Lord's day,

  99. a day where,

  100. from the rising of the sun

  101. to its setting,

  102. from north, south, east, and west,

  103. your people have been

  104. and are and will call on your name,

  105. that worship will be offered up to you

  106. as the true and living God,

  107. that in the midst of all the other idols

  108. and false gods that are worshipped,

  109. we thank you for the multitude of people

  110. who gather in your name

  111. in small numbers and places

  112. and in large numbers and other places,

  113. but all together we seek

  114. to lift up our praise

  115. and our prayers to you

  116. and to join in that wonderful chorus of heaven

  117. where praise is made before you,

  118. where we know, Lord,

  119. we have a Saviour

  120. who is seated at your right hand.

  121. We have our Lord and our God,

  122. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  123. the one who,

  124. as we offer up our prayers,

  125. we do so in and through

  126. his mighty and powerful name.

  127. And Lord,

  128. we do commit ourselves

  129. into your care

  130. and into your keeping

  131. as a people,

  132. as a congregation,

  133. as homes and families,

  134. as a community.

  135. Lord,

  136. surround us with your presence,

  137. the very thing that we so often

  138. take for granted,

  139. that you are with us,

  140. that you will be near in all things.

  141. And yet,

  142. as we even read your word this evening,

  143. we see how quickly,

  144. as a people,

  145. we can turn away,

  146. as we can forget you,

  147. Lord.

  148. And so as we go on,

  149. even in this week ahead,

  150. may we go knowing you with us

  151. and asking you to be with us,

  152. asking that you would guide us

  153. and help us

  154. and lead us

  155. along life's journey,

  156. that we would make our ways

  157. according to your paths,

  158. that we would follow your ways.

  159. Teach us in them,

  160. Lord, we pray.

  161. And we just ask your help

  162. and your strength

  163. in all of these things.

  164. May you bless us

  165. as a congregation here.

  166. We thank you

  167. for the fellowship

  168. of your people.

  169. We thank you for visitors

  170. as we have been seeing

  171. over these last weeks,

  172. coming from all different places.

  173. People home on holiday

  174. and people just passing by

  175. and coming to worship with us.

  176. We thank you for that fellowship

  177. and the bonds

  178. that there is in Christ.

  179. Christ.

  180. We just pray to see

  181. that unity and fellowship blossom.

  182. We pray, Lord,

  183. your protection over us

  184. as a people,

  185. that you would unite us together

  186. in your word

  187. and according to your truth

  188. and lead us in your ways

  189. as a people,

  190. even in this time

  191. and these months ahead, Lord.

  192. May we know your will

  193. and your purpose for us.

  194. We pray, Lord,

  195. for every home and family here.

  196. We thank you

  197. that we can remember each other

  198. at the throne of grace

  199. and to do so not just publicly

  200. but in our prayers as well, Lord,

  201. that you would keep us

  202. prayerful for one another.

  203. Even as we think of those

  204. who are unwell,

  205. those who are going through times

  206. of distress in different ways.

  207. We think of people

  208. who are in different needs

  209. at this time, Lord,

  210. and thankful that

  211. even when we don't know

  212. their names,

  213. that you do

  214. and that we can come

  215. prayerfully for them.

  216. We do have particular prayers

  217. for people as well

  218. as we have mentioned this morning

  219. and seen with Scott

  220. and Fiona and the girls

  221. and they're moving to Harris.

  222. We pray for them, Lord,

  223. for you to go with them,

  224. to be their shepherd,

  225. to be their help,

  226. to guide them

  227. and to help them

  228. in this next phase

  229. of Scott's training.

  230. May you bless them

  231. in the congregation

  232. of North Harris,

  233. help them to settle there

  234. and to make new friends,

  235. to be a blessing

  236. to those there

  237. and help Scott

  238. in his studies

  239. over this coming year

  240. as well

  241. and in his preaching,

  242. lead them and guide them

  243. and be his help

  244. and strengthen it all

  245. and may they know

  246. your blessing with them.

  247. And we do pray, Lord,

  248. for others

  249. who are training

  250. for the ministry.

  251. We thank you

  252. as we have heard

  253. in these last weeks

  254. of the congregation

  255. of North Uist

  256. and David Fergson

  257. accepting the call.

  258. We thank you for that

  259. and we pray for him

  260. and Catherine and Duncan

  261. as they move

  262. and as they settle

  263. into a new home,

  264. a new community

  265. and especially

  266. into a new congregation there.

  267. We ask that you

  268. will lead them together

  269. and bless them

  270. as a people there.

  271. May your church flourish

  272. in the North

  273. and Uist

  274. and also in the South

  275. as well

  276. as we pray

  277. for the congregation

  278. there as well.

  279. We do pray

  280. for our seminary

  281. as well

  282. with all the students

  283. who have finished.

  284. Some may be waiting

  285. on a call as well.

  286. We pray

  287. for your leading

  288. and guiding to them

  289. and for other inductions

  290. that will be taking place

  291. in these coming weeks

  292. as well.

  293. We thank you for that

  294. and pray that you will

  295. provide more and more

  296. gospel ministers,

  297. those who will

  298. go out with the good news

  299. and proclaim it

  300. throughout our land.

  301. We thank you

  302. for our seminary

  303. and for the professors there

  304. and for all the students

  305. who will be starting back

  306. in these next few weeks.

  307. We pray your blessing

  308. and help towards them

  309. and that you will

  310. be with them, Lord,

  311. in this coming year.

  312. We thank you too, Lord,

  313. that we can commit

  314. the disarray

  315. that we see around us,

  316. our nation,

  317. in so much turmoil

  318. and the world

  319. in so much disarray.

  320. When we think of

  321. leaderships and contests

  322. going on in America,

  323. we think of turmoil

  324. in the Middle East

  325. and the Ukraine

  326. and the tensions

  327. in North Korea

  328. and the Far East

  329. as well, Lord.

  330. There are so many things

  331. going on around us

  332. and so many things

  333. that we do not even know about.

  334. How your people

  335. are persecuted,

  336. how your church suffers

  337. in so many different ways.

  338. And yet we thank you

  339. that you are the light

  340. to this world,

  341. that you are the one

  342. who is able

  343. to powerfully bless

  344. and to bring peace,

  345. to bring stability,

  346. to bring your goodness

  347. upon us.

  348. We do pray that,

  349. to know it

  350. throughout our land,

  351. near and far.

  352. And so we commit ourselves

  353. into your hands now,

  354. Lord.

  355. We ask that you will bless us

  356. as we turn to your word,

  357. that you will lead us into it

  358. and the singing of your praise

  359. help us to lift up our voices

  360. in thanksgiving to you,

  361. that you will give us voices

  362. that will rejoice in you

  363. and hearts that will

  364. proclaim you

  365. and that the joy of the Lord

  366. would be our strength.

  367. We ask, Lord,

  368. that you would forgive us

  369. for all our sin too,

  370. that you would have mercy upon us,

  371. that you would cleanse us anew

  372. by the precious blood of Christ

  373. as we come in his name,

  374. offering up all of these things,

  375. thankful for a glorious

  376. and a wonderful Savior,

  377. a precious Savior.

  378. May he be more and more precious

  379. to us each and every day

  380. and may you love us

  381. through him

  382. and do us good

  383. as we ask all these things

  384. in the precious name of Jesus

  385. and for his glory.

  386. Amen.

  387. We again sing to God's praise

  388. this time in Psalm 121

  389. in the Scottish Psalter version.

  390. Psalm 121.

  391. Find this on page 416.

  392. Psalm 121 on page 416.

  393. I to the hills will lift mine eyes

  394. from whence doth come my need.

  395. My safety cometh from the Lord

  396. who heaven and earth hath made.

  397. We'll sing the whole of this psalm

  398. and the tune is Denfield.

  399. We sing to God's praise.

  400. Amen.

  401. Amen.

  402. I to the hills will lift mine eyes

  403. from whence doth come my name.

  404. I sit ye calm and from the Lord

  405. who then on earth hath made.

  406. Thy foot in no place

  407. like nor will

  408. he sombered at the gate.

  409. Behold thee that keeps Israel

  410. He sombered at the gate.

  411. The Lord be keeps the Lord thy shape

  412. on thy right hand the same.

  413. Thou good by night

  414. thee shall not smite

  415. nor yet the sun by day.

  416. God the Lord shall keep thy soul

  417. He shall

  418. grace where thee come all hell

  419. and forth thy going

  420. and hand in

  421. God be forever well.

  422. We'll turn and read together

  423. in God's word now

  424. in the book of Isaiah

  425. in the Old Testament.

  426. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  427. We're going to take up

  428. our reading at verse 9.

  429. Isaiah chapter 40

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  430. and at verse 9

  431. you'll find it around page 724

  432. of the Bibles.

  433. Isaiah 40 is almost like a turning point

  434. in the book of Isaiah

  435. where it begins

  436. a new kind of section

  437. where the people of God

  438. have been

  439. we've been seeing them

  440. becoming more and more unfaithful

  441. up to this point

  442. up to chapter 39

  443. and God has been warning them

  444. and then in chapter 40 onwards

  445. it's more about how God

  446. is going to restore his people

  447. and we see that in this chapter

  448. when it begins with these words

  449. comfort, comfort

  450. my people

  451. says

  452. your God.

  453. We're going to take up

  454. our reading at verse 9

  455. and we read there

  456. of the greatness

  457. of God.

  458. Get you up

  459. onto a high mountain

  460. O Zion

  461. herald of good news

  462. lift up your voice

  463. with strength

  464. O Jerusalem

  465. herald of good news

  466. lift it up

  467. fear not

  468. say to the cities of Judah

  469. behold

  470. your God

  471. behold

  472. the Lord God

  473. comes with might

  474. and his arm

  475. rules for him

  476. behold

  477. his reward

  478. is with him

  479. and his recompense

  480. before him

  481. he will tend

  482. his flock

  483. like a shepherd

  484. he will gather

  485. the lambs

  486. in his arms

  487. he will carry them

  488. in his bosom

  489. and gently lead

  490. those that are

  491. with young

  492. who has measured

  493. the water

  494. from the hollow

  495. of his hand

  496. and marked off

  497. the heavens

  498. with a span

  499. enclosed

  500. the dust

  501. of the earth

  502. in a measure

  503. and weighed

  504. the mountains

  505. in scales

  506. and the hills

  507. in a balance

  508. who has measured

  509. the spirit

  510. of the Lord

  511. or what man

  512. shows him

  513. his counsel

  514. whom did he consult

  515. and who made him

  516. understand

  517. who taught him

  518. the path

  519. of justice

  520. and taught him

  521. knowledge

  522. and showed him

  523. the way

  524. of understanding

  525. behold

  526. the nations

  527. are like a drop

  528. from a bucket

  529. and are accounted

  530. as the dust

  531. on the scales

  532. behold

  533. he takes up

  534. the coastlands

  535. like fine dust

  536. Lebanon

  537. would not suffice

  538. for fuel

  539. nor are its beasts

  540. enough

  541. for a burnt offering

  542. all the nations

  543. are as nothing

  544. before him

  545. they are accounted

  546. by him

  547. as less than nothing

  548. and emptiness

  549. to whom then

  550. will you liken

  551. God

  552. or what likeness

  553. compares with him

  554. an idol

  555. a craftsman

  556. casts it

  557. and a goldsmith

  558. overlays it

  559. with gold

  560. and casts

  561. for it

  562. silver chains

  563. he who is

  564. too impoverished

  565. for an offering

  566. chooses wood

  567. that will not rot

  568. he seeks out

  569. a skillful

  570. craftsman

  571. to set up

  572. an idol

  573. that will not

  574. move

  575. do you not know

  576. do you not hear

  577. has it not been told

  578. you from the beginning

  579. have you not understood

  580. from the foundations

  581. of the earth

  582. it is he

  583. who sits above

  584. the circle

  585. of the earth

  586. and its inhabitants

  587. are like grasshoppers

  588. who stretches out

  589. the heavens

  590. like a curtain

  591. and spreads them

  592. like a tent

  593. to dwell in

  594. who brings

  595. princes to nothing

  596. and makes the rulers

  597. of the earth

  598. as emptiness

  599. scarcely are they

  600. planted

  601. scarcely sown

  602. scarcely has their

  603. stem

  604. taken root

  605. in the earth

  606. when he blows

  607. on them

  608. and they wither

  609. and the tempest

  610. carries them off

  611. like stubble

  612. to whom then

  613. will you compare me

  614. that I should be like him

  615. says the holy one

  616. lift up your eyes

  617. on high

  618. and see

  619. who created these

  620. he who brings out

  621. their host

  622. by number

  623. calling them all

  624. by name

  625. by the greatness

  626. of his might

  627. and because

  628. he is strong

  629. in power

  630. not one

  631. is missing

  632. why do you say

  633. oh Jacob

  634. and speak

  635. oh Israel

  636. my way is hidden

  637. from the Lord

  638. and my right

  639. is disregarded

  640. by my God

  641. have you not known

  642. have you not heard

  643. the Lord

  644. is the everlasting God

  645. the creator

  646. of the ends

  647. of the earth

  648. he does not faint

  649. or grow weary

  650. his understanding

  651. is unsearchable

  652. he gives power

  653. to the faint

  654. and to him

  655. who has no might

  656. he increases strength

  657. even youths

  658. shall faint

  659. and be weary

  660. and young men

  661. shall fall exhausted

  662. but they

  663. who wait

  664. for the Lord

  665. shall renew

  666. their strength

  667. they shall mount up

  668. with wings

  669. like eagles

  670. they shall run

  671. and not be weary

  672. they shall walk

  673. and not faint

  674. amen

  675. and may God bless

  676. that reading

  677. of his word

  678. but before we come

  679. to look at this passage

  680. we're going to sing again

  681. to God's praise

  682. in Psalm 89

  683. Psalm 89

  684. page 345

  685. the Scottish Psalter version

  686. we sing from verse 13

  687. down to verse 18

  688. Psalm 89

  689. at verse 13

  690. thou hast an arm

  691. that's full of power

  692. thy hand

  693. is great in might

  694. and thy right hand

  695. exceedingly exalted

  696. is in height

  697. we'll sing from verse 13

  698. to 18

  699. the tune is Evan

  700. and we sing

  701. to God's praise

  702. thou hast an arm

  703. thou hast an arm

  704. that's full of power

  705. thy hand is great in might

  706. and thy light

  707. and thy name is great in might

  708. and thy name is great in might

  709. justice and judgment

  710. of thy throne

  711. are made the dwelling place

  712. mercy

  713. and Prob tranquility

  714. and

  715. In brightness of thy face, O Lord,

  716. they ever art shall go.

  717. They in my name shall all the day

  718. rejoice exceedingly.

  719. And in thy righteousness shall be

  720. exalted thee on high.

  721. Because the glory of Israel

  722. doth only stand with thee.

  723. And in thy favor shall our heart

  724. and thou praise all did thee.

  725. For God is our defense and team

  726. to us of safety bring.

  727. The holy one of Israel

  728. is our almighty king.

  729. Amen.

  730. We turn back to our reading in Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  731. And as I said this morning,

  732. today we're thinking about two different ways

  733. we could maybe sum up what the Bible is about.

  734. If we were asked by someone,

  735. as I was saying this morning,

  736. maybe you've been reading a book

  737. or watching a movie

  738. and you've been speaking to someone about it

  739. and they've asked,

  740. well, how would you sum it up?

  741. What would make me want to watch that

  742. or read that?

  743. How would we approach that

  744. when we think about the Bible,

  745. the scriptures that we have before us?

  746. When we think of inviting people along to church

  747. to come and hear the word of God,

  748. how do we explain to them

  749. what we're inviting them to

  750. and why they should take it seriously,

  751. why they should listen to the invitation

  752. and come and hear what this word has to say?

  753. This morning we were looking at

  754. the theme of sinners in need of salvation.

  755. That is what the Bible tells us

  756. from beginning to end.

  757. We were looking at 1 Thessalonians chapter 2

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  758. where Paul is writing,

  759. concerned for the church at Thessalonica,

  760. they are concerned for their faith

  761. and how they are going.

  762. A church that has seen sinners come to salvation.

  763. And that wonderful good news of the gospel

  764. is that there is a saviour for sinners.

  765. So we thought of that this morning,

  766. sinners in need of salvation.

  767. But coming to faith is just the start.

  768. Going on in faith is what it's about as well.

  769. And how are we encouraged to go on?

  770. Well, again, the Bible speaks to us of this.

  771. It reminds us of how we go on.

  772. We go on not in our own strength,

  773. but in the strength of the Lord.

  774. And another way of we can summarise the Bible,

  775. especially in a world that is so weary

  776. and heavy laden with so many different things

  777. in these days,

  778. is to say, well, in this word,

  779. you find a God who says to the weary,

  780. come, come to me and find refreshing in me.

  781. Find renewal in me.

  782. Find strength in me.

  783. And that's what we see in this wonderful passage.

  784. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  785. As you come to the end of this chapter,

  786. where our focus will be really from verse 27

  787. to the end of the chapter.

  788. We can read there at verse 30.

  789. Even youth shall faint and be weary,

  790. and young men shall fall exhausted.

  791. But they who wait for the Lord

  792. shall renew their strength.

  793. They shall mount up with wings like eagles.

  794. They shall run and not be weary.

  795. They shall walk and not faint.

  796. The word of God is full of so many promises.

  797. Promises of God.

  798. And you read through the word of God,

  799. and you find so often in the midst of God's people,

  800. so often turning away,

  801. as we'll see here in Isaiah,

  802. so often the people turning away from God,

  803. going in their own direction,

  804. and yet God is still faithful with his promises.

  805. God is still faithful with his invitation to people

  806. to come to him,

  807. to return to him,

  808. to find rest with him.

  809. Despite unfaithful people,

  810. God so often showers blessing upon them.

  811. And it's important to remind ourselves, too,

  812. of these promises.

  813. Promises that God will be with us.

  814. Promises that God is there to help.

  815. And promise, like we see here,

  816. as those who wait on the Lord,

  817. those who are maybe feeling faint and weary,

  818. if you wait on the Lord,

  819. he shall renew your strength.

  820. He keeps us going.

  821. He keeps us going on.

  822. You could look at this passage and say,

  823. the people themselves have brought it upon themselves,

  824. just this array that they find themselves in.

  825. And they are being taken captive by a nation called Babylon.

  826. This is what is in store for them because of their disobedience.

  827. So they've brought it on themselves,

  828. and yet they are shown the love of God in the midst of it all.

  829. And isn't it wonderful that God still shows that love,

  830. still shows that patience towards us as a people,

  831. still longs for us to come to him,

  832. and gives us this promise even today

  833. that when we wait on the Lord,

  834. he renews our strength.

  835. Renews our strength.

  836. He gives us hope.

  837. A man named Viktor Frankl,

  838. an Austrian man,

  839. he was a famous and a leading psychiatrist

  840. before the Second World War began.

  841. But during the Second World War,

  842. he was captured and taken prisoner,

  843. and he was imprisoned in concentration camps,

  844. one of which was Auschwitz,

  845. as well as another three concentration camps.

  846. He lived through that.

  847. He lived until he was 92,

  848. died in 1997.

  849. But in looking back in his experience

  850. in the concentration camps,

  851. having been a psychiatrist,

  852. he was obviously observing people.

  853. And he said as he observed those who were imprisoned there,

  854. he made out that what separated the survivors

  855. from those who died in the concentration camps

  856. wasn't so much physical health and strength,

  857. he said,

  858. but hope.

  859. Those who had hope,

  860. something to look forward to on the outside,

  861. something to keep them going,

  862. he said they were more likely to survive.

  863. Even a physically well person could go into a camp,

  864. and within a short space of time,

  865. because of having no hope,

  866. they could perish.

  867. But those who were weak and fragile,

  868. but still had hope,

  869. they often survived.

  870. And as we look at Isaiah writing

  871. to the people of Judah and Jerusalem here,

  872. we see that he is writing to give them this hope.

  873. And it's in the midst of kind of dismay for them.

  874. They're in a time of despair

  875. because of what they're being told is in store for them,

  876. being taken captive,

  877. being taken prisoner.

  878. But they are told to focus on the Lord,

  879. to keep their focus on him,

  880. and that he gives this promise

  881. that when they wait on the Lord,

  882. he shall renew their strength.

  883. He shall renew their strength.

  884. And it's a message for our world today.

  885. If you want to think about

  886. why you should invite someone to come to church,

  887. if you want to think of it in this way,

  888. you think of sinners in need of salvation,

  889. we need Christ.

  890. But we also have this too,

  891. that when we feel weary,

  892. when we feel tired in this world,

  893. when we feel such a sense of dismay,

  894. when all the chaos that we see around us,

  895. that the Lord gives hope.

  896. The Lord gives hope of something better.

  897. The Lord gives hope of a renewal within us,

  898. a rejoicing within us,

  899. that he renew every strength,

  900. that we might mount up on wings like eagles,

  901. and run and not be weary,

  902. and walk and not faint.

  903. That is his promise as we look to him.

  904. And so we want to ask people to come

  905. and find that for themselves.

  906. We want to have it ourselves as well.

  907. We want to have that hope and assurance

  908. and comfort ourselves.

  909. So when we are offering it to others,

  910. we're talking through experience,

  911. that this is the Lord who has helped me.

  912. This is the Lord who has renewed my strength.

  913. And I want us to look at three things in this passage.

  914. First of all, we see a weary people.

  915. Then we see a great God.

  916. And then thirdly, we see a glorious promise.

  917. So we begin with a weary people.

  918. And you ask yourself,

  919. well, what has left them in this state?

  920. So you come into chapter 40.

  921. What has left them in this state

  922. where their future looks so bleak,

  923. when they're going to be taken captive by Babylon?

  924. Well, you see it by just going back

  925. a couple of chapters.

  926. Chapter 40 is, like I said,

  927. like a turning point in the book of Isaiah.

  928. Some people describe it as the Old Testament

  929. and the New Testament,

  930. and there's a split, a moment of divide,

  931. and that this is where the divide is

  932. in the book of Isaiah.

  933. So in the previous chapters,

  934. there's been hope that everything's going to be well,

  935. but they're looking for that in the wrong place.

  936. And you see it in chapter 38,

  937. how quickly, in chapter 38 and 39,

  938. how quickly people can change.

  939. There's this man called Hezekiah

  940. that you read of in chapter 38.

  941. Hezekiah was ill,

  942. and he pleads with the Lord.

  943. He pleads with the Lord for help

  944. and healing both for him and his city.

  945. And in chapter 4,

  946. in verse 4 of chapter 38,

  947. it says,

  948. Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah,

  949. Go and say to Hezekiah,

  950. Thus says the Lord,

  951. the God of David your father,

  952. I have heard your prayer,

  953. I have seen your tears.

  954. Behold,

  955. I will add 15 years to your life.

  956. I will deliver you and this city

  957. out of the hand of the king of Assyria,

  958. and will defend this city.

  959. And you think to yourself,

  960. What a wonderful blessing.

  961. Hezekiah,

  962. his prayer has been heard,

  963. his tears have been seen,

  964. and the Lord has answered.

  965. And it's a wonderful time, you think.

  966. And then you go into chapter 39.

  967. And what's Hezekiah doing now?

  968. Hezekiah has these Babylonian envoys

  969. who have come.

  970. They've come to see Hezekiah.

  971. They've come to see his abundance of wealth.

  972. And he's almost led in by them.

  973. And he thinks,

  974. Here is someone I can be friends with.

  975. Here is someone who will help me.

  976. And yet all he is doing

  977. is throwing God's promises back in his face

  978. and saying,

  979. You're now going to rely on this nation.

  980. And you don't realize

  981. what danger you're putting yourself

  982. and your people into.

  983. And the irony is,

  984. if you read in verse 8 of chapter 39,

  985. it says,

  986. Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah,

  987. The word of the Lord,

  988. yet you have spoken, is good.

  989. And this is it.

  990. For he thought,

  991. There will be peace and security

  992. in my days.

  993. Through his own wisdom,

  994. through his own understanding

  995. of the situation

  996. of what he was going to do

  997. with the Babylonians

  998. and make this relationship

  999. that he felt would bring peace.

1000. He couldn't have been further

  1001. from the truth.

  1002. He thought,

1003. There will be peace and security

  1004. in my days.

  1005. And that's so often

1006. when we look to our own devices

  1007. in this world.

1008. When we look at our nation,

  1009. so many have said,

  1010. We will have peace

  1011. through this or that

  1012. or the next thing.

1013. And yet there's no peace.

  1014. There's more turmoil,

  1015. more trouble,

  1016. because we're not listening

  1017. to God.

1018. And then you come into chapter 40

1019. and you realize that this peace

1020. that Hezekiah had hoped for,

1021. it's not going to be.

  1022. Not at this moment.

1023. Isaiah begins with chapter 40

  1024. with comfort.

  1025. Comfort, my people,

  1026. says the Lord.

  1027. With that assurance

1028. that the word of the Lord

  1029. stands forever

  1030. in verse 6 to 8.

1031. And that's what leads us then

1032. into the rest of chapter 40

  1033. where we see

  1034. the goodness of God.

  1035. But this weedy people,

  1036. they don't see it.

1037. And when you look at verse 27,

  1038. you see God

  1039. speaking so directly

  1040. to the people there

  1041. and challenging them.

  1042. Saying,

  1043. Why do you say,

  1044. O Jacob,

  1045. and speak, O Israel?

  1046. My way is hidden

  1047. from the Lord

  1048. and my right

  1049. is disregarded

  1050. by my God.

1051. So this is the situation.

  1052. The people are groaning

  1053. and they're groaning

  1054. towards God.

  1055. That their ways

  1056. are hidden.

  1057. That His understanding

  1058. is just not there.

  1059. They're disregarded

  1060. by God.

  1061. That is the way

  1062. they see it.

  1063. And today people cry,

  1064. There is no God.

  1065. We don't want God

  1066. over us

1067. and yet there is dismay.

  1068. There is so much

  1069. that is wrong

  1070. in this world.

  1071. But we push God

1072. and then if they do

  1073. say anything about God,

  1074. well,

  1075. where is God?

  1076. He's disregarding us.

  1077. He's not interested.

  1078. He's cruel.

  1079. He's not kind

  1080. to His people.

1081. He allows so much suffering

1082. in so many different ways.

  1083. It's a very cry

  1084. that we have here

  1085. in verse 27.

  1086. My way is hidden

  1087. from the Lord

  1088. and my right

  1089. is disregarded

  1090. by my God.

  1091. But you notice

  1092. something here.

  1093. The way the people

  1094. are speaking of God,

  1095. they still hold Him.

  1096. The Lord is Yahweh.

  1097. That is the word

  1098. that they're using here,

  1099. Yahweh.

  1100. And it's my God.

  1101. We could almost say

  1102. that we've gone

  1103. further away from that.

  1104. People speak of God

  1105. as, well,

  1106. He's your God.

  1107. He's got nothing

  1108. to do with us.

  1109. He's not our God.

  1110. He's your God.

  1111. And so,

  1112. we are in disarray.

  1113. We have a people

  1114. around us

  1115. who are weary.

  1116. And it's all because

  1117. God is pushed away.

  1118. And when you look

  1119. at it here,

  1120. the people's faith

  1121. is challenged

  1122. in the way that

  1123. they say,

1124. God does not love us.

  1125. God is not interested.

  1126. God is,

  1127. our ways are hidden.

  1128. Our ways are disregarded

  1129. by God.

  1130. And behind it

  1131. is that fear

  1132. that God

  1133. is unloving.

  1134. He's not interested

  1135. in them.

  1136. That's their take.

  1137. And yet,

  1138. what's happened

1139. is that they are blind

  1140. to God.

  1141. We can all say,

  1142. I'm sure,

  1143. at some point,

  1144. we've asked questions

  1145. of God.

  1146. We've asked God,

  1147. I'm sure,

  1148. where are you?

  1149. What's going on, Lord?

  1150. Are you not interested

  1151. in what's happening?

1152. We all have these moments.

1153. But God so often speaks

  1154. to remind us

  1155. that he is there.

  1156. But as we mentioned

  1157. this morning,

  1158. there is an opponent

  1159. against the gospel.

  1160. There is an enemy,

  1161. and that is Satan.

  1162. And again,

1163. we have to see him

1164. in the midst of this,

  1165. that there is Satan

  1166. here as well,

  1167. planting seeds of doubt,

  1168. making people ask

  1169. questions of God.

1170. Does he really love me?

  1171. My way is hidden

  1172. from the Lord.

  1173. My right is disregarded

  1174. by my God.

  1175. That's not God speaking.

  1176. That's Satan

  1177. putting doubts

  1178. in their mind.

  1179. John Knox,

  1180. the famous

  1181. Scottish reformer,

1182. he once spoke about it

  1183. in this way,

  1184. reminding us that

  1185. the way of Satan

1186. is not a new way.

  1187. He said,

  1188. By what means

  1189. Satan first threw mankind

  1190. from obedience to God?

  1191. The scripture bears witness

  1192. to this,

1193. by pouring into their hearts

  1194. that poison

  1195. that God

  1196. did not love them.

  1197. Now that's the way

  1198. that Satan came

  1199. to draw mankind

1200. away from obedience to God.

  1201. To put that doubt,

  1202. that seed,

  1203. that poison,

  1204. that God

  1205. does not love them.

  1206. Despair and doubt

  1207. is one of Satan's

  1208. greatest weapons

  1209. against the Lord's people,

  1210. against all people,

  1211. against all mankind.

  1212. To say,

  1213. God is not interested.

1214. To leave us in that place

  1215. where we think,

  1216. my way is hidden

  1217. from the Lord.

  1218. My right

  1219. is disregarded

  1220. by God.

  1221. That he's not interested

  1222. in us.

  1223. We lose hope

  1224. in that.

  1225. But that is not

  1226. how God

  1227. leaves his people.

  1228. That is not

  1229. what we see

  1230. as we read on

  1231. in this passage.

  1232. That there is

  1233. so much more

  1234. that if Satan

  1235. attacks,

  1236. we are to turn

  1237. to God.

  1238. And that's what

  1239. the role of Isaiah

  1240. is as the prophet

  1241. in the midst

  1242. of this.

  1243. to bring the people

  1244. back to God.

  1245. To bring him

  1246. back to see that

  1247. no,

  1248. he's not forgotten.

  1249. He's not disregarded.

  1250. It's not that he

  1251. doesn't love you.

1252. That he can bring good.

  1253. As the hymn writer

  1254. says in the hymn

  1255. before the throne

  1256. of God above,

  1257. when Satan

  1258. tempts me

  1259. to despair

  1260. and tells me

  1261. of the guilt

  1262. within,

  1263. upward

  1264. I look

  1265. and see him

  1266. there

  1267. who made an end

  1268. of all my sin.

  1269. Upward

  1270. I look.

  1271. We look

  1272. to God.

  1273. And that's exactly

  1274. what Isaiah

  1275. is doing here

  1276. as the Lord

  1277. speaks through him.

  1278. For the second thing

  1279. we see here

  1280. is a great God.

  1281. A great God.

  1282. And you see that

  1283. in verse 28.

  1284. Have you not known?

  1285. Have you not heard?

  1286. The Lord

  1287. is the everlasting God,

  1288. the creator

  1289. of the ends

  1290. of the earth.

  1291. He does not faint

  1292. or grow weary.

  1293. His understanding

  1294. is unsearchable.

  1295. We look up

  1296. to God.

  1297. We look up

  1298. to him

  1299. who is

  1300. the everlasting God,

  1301. the creator

  1302. of the ends

  1303. of the earth.

  1304. So often

  1305. in despair

  1306. in these times,

  1307. these moments,

  1308. we can take

  1309. our eyes off God

  1310. and we lose sight

  1311. of him.

  1312. We can't see

  1313. a way forward.

  1314. We forget

  1315. that God's been

  1316. faithful in the past.

  1317. We forget

  1318. the hope

  1319. that God gives

  1320. for the future.

  1321. We just look

  1322. at the here

  1323. and now

  1324. and we don't

  1325. see God.

  1326. But here

  1327. is Isaiah

  1328. saying,

  1329. look up.

  1330. Just like

  1331. Psalm 121

  1332. spoke of

  1333. when we think

  1334. of

  1335. I to the hills

  1336. will lift

  1337. mine eyes.

  1338. There was this

  1339. danger

  1340. in the Psalms

  1341. saying,

  1342. where will my

  1343. help come from?

  1344. My help,

  1345. my safety

  1346. comes from

  1347. the Lord

  1348. who has made

  1349. heaven and earth.

  1350. And Isaiah

  1351. is focusing

  1352. the people here.

  1353. You have known,

  1354. you have heard,

  1355. he is saying

  1356. in verse 28.

  1357. You know all

  1358. about God

  1359. but you've lost

  1360. sight of him

  1361. and God

  1362. is there

  1363. for us today.

  1364. He's saying,

  1365. have you not heard,

  1366. have you not known

  1367. the Lord

  1368. is the everlasting

  1369. everlasting God.

  1370. Something our

  1371. nation knew

  1372. so well in the

  1373. past and has

  1374. forgotten.

  1375. Something even

  1376. the churches

  1377. today have maybe

  1378. forgotten to a

  1379. certain extent.

  1380. We've forgotten

  1381. what we know

  1382. and what we heard

  1383. of God.

  1384. But God

  1385. is the everlasting

  1386. God,

  1387. the creator

  1388. of the ends

  1389. of the earth.

  1390. He is our

  1391. only help,

  1392. our only hope

  1393. in the midst

  1394. of everything.

  1395. He is all

  1396. powerful.

  1397. He is all

  1398. knowing.

  1399. There is no

  1400. situation that

  1401. lies out

  1402. with his

  1403. control,

  1404. out with his

  1405. knowledge.

  1406. It's not that

  1407. he's sleeping.

  1408. It's not that

  1409. he's not there.

  1410. He does not

  1411. faint or

  1412. grow weary.

  1413. His understanding

  1414. is unsearchable.

  1415. We think we

  1416. have wisdom.

  1417. We think we

  1418. have understanding.

  1419. It is nothing

  1420. compared to

  1421. his.

  1422. And that is

  1423. what we

  1424. remember.

  1425. That is

  1426. what we

  1427. are to

  1428. hold on

  1429. to ourselves.

  1430. If we

  1431. think of

  1432. inviting

  1433. others to

  1434. come and

  1435. hear this

  1436. message,

  1437. this gospel,

  1438. this good

  1439. news,

  1440. how do we

  1441. know God

  1442. ourselves?

  1443. Sometimes it's

  1444. easy to tell

  1445. others that

  1446. God is good,

  1447. that you need

  1448. God in your

  1449. life.

  1450. But do you

  1451. tell yourself?

  1452. Do you

  1453. remind yourself

  1454. of the

  1455. greatness of

  1456. God?

  1457. Do you

  1458. remind yourself

  1459. as you look

  1460. at God's

  1461. word?

  1462. Here is

  1463. the Lord

  1464. who is the

  1465. everlasting God,

  1466. the creator

  1467. of the ends

  1468. of the earth.

  1469. And he is

  1470. the one who

  1471. had mercy

  1472. on me,

  1473. a sinner.

  1474. Isn't that

  1475. amazing?

  1476. That God

  1477. loved me,

  1478. that he would

  1479. give his son

  1480. for me.

  1481. The creator

  1482. of heaven

  1483. and earth

  1484. is interested

  1485. in us.

  1486. So the

  1487. doubts that

  1488. Satan puts

  1489. in,

  1490. my way is

  1491. hidden,

  1492. my right is

  1493. disregarded,

  1494. that God

  1495. doesn't love,

  1496. it's dismissed,

  1497. it's dispelled

  1498. as we see

  1499. God in all

  1500. his greatness.

  1501. The writer

  1502. and minister

  1503. John Flavel

  1504. from many

  1505. years ago,

  1506. he once

  1507. said this

  1508. and it

  1509. shows the

  1510. importance

  1511. of listening

  1512. to the

  1513. word of

  1514. God.

  1515. He said,

  1516. one word

  1517. of God

  1518. can do

  1519. more than

  1520. 10,000

  1521. words of

  1522. men

  1523. to relieve

  1524. a distressed

  1525. soul.

  1526. One

  1527. word of

  1528. God

  1529. can do

  1530. more than

  1531. 10,000

  1532. words of

  1533. men

  1534. to relieve

  1535. a distressed

  1536. soul.

  1537. And isn't

  1538. it amazing

  1539. that God

  1540. speaks to

  1541. us.

  1542. That even

  1543. as we look

  1544. at these

  1545. words tonight,

  1546. here is God

  1547. speaking to

  1548. us.

  1549. Have you

  1550. not known?

  1551. Have you

  1552. not heard?

  1553. The Lord

  1554. is the

  1555. everlasting

  1556. God.

  1557. As he

  1558. speaks to

  1559. us,

  1560. but those

  1561. who wait

  1562. for the

  1563. Lord

  1564. shall

  1565. renew

  1566. their

  1567. strength.

  1568. They

  1569. shall

  1570. mount

  1571. up

  1572. with

  1573. wings

  1574. like

  1575. eagles.

  1576. God

  1577. speaking

  1578. to

  1579. us.

  1580. But are

  1581. we

  1582. anchoring

  1583. ourselves

  1584. in that

  1585. word and

  1586. in his

  1587. promises?

  1588. Someone

  1589. once

  1590. described

  1591. it as

  1592. looking to

  1593. the

  1594. icebergs

  1595. that you

  1596. see around

  1597. the cold

  1598. waters of

  1599. places like

  1600. Greenland.

  1601. When you

  1602. see icebergs

  1603. in these

  1604. areas,

  1605. you see

  1606. that there

  1607. are different

  1608. kinds of

  1609. icebergs,

  1610. different sizes

  1611. of icebergs.

  1612. Some are

  1613. small and

  1614. some are

  1615. very large.

  1616. And as

  1617. you observe

  1618. them,

  1619. you can

  1620. see that

  1621. they may

  1622. be very

  1623. often going

  1624. in different

  1625. directions.

  1626. The small

  1627. ones might

  1628. be going

  1629. one way

  1630. and the

  1631. larger ones

  1632. going another

  1633. way.

  1634. And how

  1635. is this?

  1636. Why is

  1637. that?

  1638. The person

  1639. said the

  1640. explanation is

  1641. simple.

  1642. The winds,

  1643. the surface

  1644. winds,

  1645. move the

  1646. little ones,

  1647. whereas the

  1648. large ones,

  1649. what moves

  1650. them is the

  1651. currents of

  1652. the ocean

  1653. underneath.

  1654. And they

  1655. used it as

  1656. a way of

  1657. illustrating

  1658. how our

  1659. lives are.

  1660. They said

  1661. the wind

  1662. represents

  1663. everything

  1664. changeable,

  1665. unpredictable,

  1666. and distressing.

  1667. That can

  1668. just blow us

  1669. in different

  1670. directions.

  1671. But they

  1672. said operating

  1673. at the same

  1674. time with

  1675. these gusts

  1676. and winds

  1677. is another

  1678. force,

  1679. another

  1680. more powerful

  1681. force.

  1682. And it's a

  1683. sure movement

  1684. of God's

  1685. wise and

  1686. sovereign

  1687. purposes,

  1688. the deep

  1689. flow of

  1690. his unchanging

  1691. love.

  1692. And we

  1693. can be

  1694. tossed around

  1695. by the

  1696. winds as

  1697. James in

  1698. the New

  1699. Testament

  1700. describes.

  1701. And that's

  1702. when Satan

  1703. puts these

  1704. doubts in

  1705. that blows

  1706. us off

  1707. course.

  1708. But Isaiah

  1709. is bringing

  1710. them back to

  1711. be grounded

  1712. in the

  1713. word of

  1714. God.

  1715. With that

  1716. deep flow,

  1717. that

  1718. undercurrent

  1719. of his

  1720. unchanging

  1721. love.

  1722. Because there

  1723. is the

  1724. greatness

  1725. of God.

  1726. So we

  1727. see here

  1728. the goodness

  1729. of God.

  1730. The final

  1731. thing we

  1732. want to

  1733. see here

  1734. is the

  1735. promised

  1736. renewal.

  1737. A precious

  1738. promise.

  1739. God's

  1740. greatness is

  1741. something that

  1742. at times we

  1743. just cannot

  1744. describe.

  1745. How do

  1746. we describe

  1747. the greatness

  1748. of God,

  1749. the love

  1750. of God

  1751. towards us,

  1752. especially when

  1753. you think of

  1754. it in the

  1755. midst of

  1756. times of

  1757. dismay?

  1758. I'm sure

  1759. you've heard

  1760. it before

  1761. described,

  1762. maybe I've

  1763. used it

  1764. myself,

  1765. of how

  1766. someone

  1767. describes a

  1768. jewellery

  1769. shop and

  1770. how they

  1771. display

  1772. diamonds.

  1773. And very

  1774. often you

  1775. find that in

  1776. a jewellery

  1777. the most

  1778. precious

  1779. diamonds are

  1780. displayed with

  1781. a black

  1782. background.

  1783. And the

  1784. reason for

  1785. that is that

  1786. the darkness

  1787. shows the

  1788. beauty of

  1789. the diamond

  1790. in an even

  1791. greater way.

  1792. And how

  1793. often we

  1794. think of the

  1795. word of God

  1796. in that way,

  1797. how there is

  1798. a darkness

  1799. behind things,

  1800. and yet you

  1801. see the

  1802. beauty and

  1803. the greatness

  1804. of God

  1805. shining in

  1806. the midst

  1807. of darkness.

  1808. And here

  1809. is Isaiah

  1810. speaking to

  1811. a people,

  1812. people who

  1813. are questioning

  1814. God,

  1815. people who

  1816. are anxious

  1817. and worried

  1818. and afraid,

  1819. and yet

  1820. Isaiah is

  1821. shining that

  1822. light into

  1823. the darkness

  1824. and showing

  1825. the beauty

  1826. of God

  1827. and the

  1828. hope that

  1829. God gives.

  1830. And he

  1831. says it in

  1832. verse 18

  1833. earlier on

  1834. here,

  1835. he's reminding

  1836. them of

  1837. where else

  1838. are you going

  1839. to look,

  1840. to whom

  1841. then will

  1842. you liken

  1843. God,

  1844. or with

  1845. what likeness

  1846. compare

  1847. him?

  1848. Is he

  1849. like the

  1850. idols,

  1851. he goes

  1852. on to

  1853. speak,

  1854. idols that

  1855. can do

  1856. nothing.

  1857. But then

  1858. he goes

  1859. on in

  1860. verse 21,

  1861. do you

  1862. not know,

  1863. do you

  1864. not hear,

  1865. has it

  1866. not been

  1867. told from

  1868. the beginning,

  1869. have you

  1870. not understood

  1871. from the

  1872. foundations

  1873. of the

  1874. earth,

  1875. how God

  1876. is the

  1877. one who

  1878. inhabits

  1879. above the

  1880. earth,

  1881. the one

  1882. who is in

  1883. control.

  1884. He is

  1885. the one

  1886. who has

  1887. power over

  1888. all things.

  1889. And so

  1890. it is this

  1891. God that

  1892. we have

  1893. who gives

  1894. us strength.

  1895. He is the

  1896. one who

  1897. doesn't faint

  1898. or grow

  1899. weary,

  1900. whose

  1901. understanding

  1902. is unsearchable,

  1903. he is the

  1904. one who

  1905. gives power,

  1906. who gives

  1907. strength.

  1908. He gives

  1909. power to the

  1910. faint and to

  1911. him who has

  1912. no might,

  1913. he increases

  1914. strength.

  1915. So when we

  1916. are weary,

  1917. when we are

  1918. dismayed,

  1919. when we are

  1920. tired,

  1921. when we

  1922. are all

  1923. of these

  1924. things,

  1925. he gives

  1926. us his

  1927. power.

  1928. And when

  1929. you take

  1930. these verses

  1931. forward,

  1932. when you

  1933. look at

  1934. them in

  1935. the context

  1936. of the

  1937. New Testament,

  1938. it so

  1939. much points

  1940. to Christ.

  1941. They are

  1942. pointing us

  1943. towards

  1944. Christ.

  1945. And we

  1946. see there

  1947. his glory

  1948. shine on the

  1949. cross in

  1950. the midst

  1951. of that

  1952. darkness.

  1953. And although

  1954. as we've

  1955. looked at

  1956. recently,

  1957. as you're

  1958. looking at

  1959. what happened

  1960. at the

  1961. cross,

  1962. the people

  1963. who were

  1964. questioning

  1965. and the

  1966. people who

  1967. were downcast,

  1968. the two

  1969. on the

  1970. road to

  1971. Emmaus

  1972. we were

  1973. looking at

  1974. last week,

  1975. they felt

  1976. that hope

  1977. was gone.

  1978. And yet

  1979. God was

  1980. doing an

  1981. amazing thing.

  1982. God was

  1983. doing something

  1984. beyond our

  1985. understanding.

  1986. His

  1987. understanding

  1988. is

  1989. unsearchable.

  1990. To us

  1991. it seems

  1992. to make

  1993. no sense,

  1994. the cross.

  1995. And yet

  1996. there we

  1997. see where

  1998. we will be

  1999. renewed,

  2000. where our

  2001. strength comes

  2002. from.

  2003. Those who

  2004. wait on the

  2005. Lord shall

  2006. renew their

  2007. strength.

  2008. They shall

  2009. mount up

  2010. with wings

  2011. like eagles.

  2012. They shall

  2013. run and

  2014. not be

  2015. weary.

  2016. They shall

  2017. walk and

  2018. not faint.

  2019. You think

  2020. of the

  2021. disciples

  2022. after they

  2023. met with

  2024. the risen

  2025. Lord.

  2026. Lord,

  2027. met with

  2028. all these

  2029. people who

  2030. met with

  2031. God,

  2032. the risen

  2033. Lord.

  2034. No more

  2035. were they

  2036. faint and

  2037. weary.

  2038. You think

  2039. even the

  2040. two on

  2041. the road

  2042. to Emmaus

  2043. who had

  2044. been downcast

  2045. walking almost

  2046. all day

  2047. to Emmaus

  2048. from Jerusalem

  2049. seven miles

  2050. and yet

  2051. it seems

  2052. like there

  2053. was no

  2054. time at

  2055. all until

  2056. they were

  2057. back in

  2058. Jerusalem

  2059. when they

  2060. had

  2061. recognized

  2062. Jesus.

  2063. They

  2064. weren't

  2065. faint,

  2066. they

  2067. weren't

  2068. weary.

  2069. Their

  2070. strength

  2071. was

  2072. renewed.

  2073. And that

  2074. is what

  2075. the Lord

  2076. does.

  2077. That is

  2078. what the

  2079. Lord does

  2080. for his

  2081. people.

  2082. And that's

  2083. what verse

  2084. 31 gives

  2085. to us.

  2086. It's a

  2087. beautiful

  2088. and a

  2089. wonderful

  2090. promise

  2091. that this

  2092. is what

  2093. he will

  2094. do for

  2095. you and

  2096. for me

  2097. as we

  2098. put our

  2099. trust in

  2100. him.

  2101. It seems

  2102. to have

  2103. a future,

  2104. future,

  2105. but it's

  2106. also for

  2107. the present

  2108. that he

  2109. is able

  2110. to actively

  2111. renew us

  2112. day by

  2113. day to

  2114. strengthen

  2115. us each

  2116. and every

  2117. day.

  2118. It is

  2119. the Lord

  2120. who does

  2121. it.

  2122. I listened

  2123. to a

  2124. short

  2125. testimony

  2126. today of

  2127. a woman

  2128. and she

  2129. began by

  2130. saying this,

  2131. people

  2132. can't

  2133. change.

  2134. change.

  2135. She wasn't

  2136. saying it

  2137. meaning it.

  2138. She was

  2139. saying it

  2140. having heard

  2141. it so

  2142. often in

  2143. her own

  2144. life.

  2145. People

  2146. can't

  2147. change.

  2148. I.e.

  2149. what they

  2150. were saying

  2151. to her

  2152. was,

  2153. you

  2154. can't

  2155. change.

  2156. And for

  2157. so long

  2158. in her

  2159. life that

  2160. seemed

  2161. to be

  2162. the case.

  2163. And she

  2164. said,

  2165. I was

  2166. hung over

  2167. every day.

  2168. This was

  2169. her life.

  2170. She describes

  2171. herself as

  2172. the meanest

  2173. atheist.

  2174. God just

  2175. meant nothing

  2176. to her.

  2177. And anyone

  2178. who had

  2179. any interest

  2180. in God,

  2181. she was

  2182. the meanest

  2183. atheist

  2184. towards

  2185. them.

  2186. This was

  2187. her life.

  2188. People

  2189. can't

  2190. change.

  2191. But now

  2192. she's

  2193. saying that

  2194. is not

  2195. true.

  2196. She has

  2197. been sober

  2198. ten years.

  2199. A believer

  2200. and a

  2201. bright witness

  2202. for Christ.

  2203. And she

  2204. said,

  2205. once you

  2206. meet God,

  2207. you cannot

  2208. but be

  2209. changed.

  2210. She met

  2211. the living

  2212. God.

  2213. And she

  2214. also said

  2215. this,

  2216. if you

  2217. believe

  2218. people

  2219. can't

  2220. change,

  2221. it's

  2222. because you

  2223. haven't

  2224. met God.

  2225. God is

  2226. the one

  2227. who is

  2228. able to

  2229. change

  2230. any.

  2231. And

  2232. testimonies

  2233. are always

  2234. such a

  2235. powerful

  2236. reminder

  2237. for us.

  2238. Powerful

  2239. reminder of

  2240. how God

  2241. transforms

  2242. life.

  2243. And that

  2244. is what

  2245. the gospel

  2246. does.

  2247. That is

  2248. what Christ

  2249. does for

  2250. sinners.

  2251. Sinners

  2252. in need

  2253. of salvation,

  2254. there is

  2255. Christ.

  2256. And the

  2257. weary

  2258. in need

  2259. of refreshing

  2260. to go

  2261. on,

  2262. there is

  2263. Christ.

  2264. It's

  2265. all of

  2266. him.

  2267. He

  2268. saves

  2269. and he

  2270. keeps

  2271. and he

  2272. keeps us

  2273. going.

  2274. Even

  2275. youths

  2276. shall faint

  2277. and be

  2278. weary

  2279. and young

  2280. men

  2281. shall fall

  2282. exhausted.

  2283. But they

  2284. who wait

  2285. on the

  2286. Lord

  2287. shall

  2288. renew

  2289. their

  2290. strength.

  2291. They

  2292. shall

  2293. mount

  2294. up with

  2295. wings

  2296. like

  2297. eagles.

  2298. They

  2299. shall

  2300. run

  2301. and not

  2302. be

  2303. weary.

  2304. They

  2305. shall

  2306. walk

  2307. and not

  2308. faint.

  2309. Isn't

  2310. that a

  2311. wonderful

  2312. promise

  2313. of the

  2314. renewing

  2315. power

  2316. of God?

  2317. A

  2318. weary

  2319. people

  2320. see the

  2321. greatness

  2322. of God

  2323. and go

  2324. on in

  2325. his

  2326. strength.

  2327. Let us

  2328. pray.

  2329. God

  2330. to

  2331. God

  2332. to

  2333. God

  2334. to

  2335. God

  2336. is

  2337. powerful.

  2338. That

  2339. one

  2340. word

  2341. from

  2342. you

  2343. is

  2344. worth

  2345. more

  2346. than

  2347. 10,000

  2348. words

  2349. of

  2350. men.

  2351. And we

  2352. thank you

  2353. that you

  2354. speak

  2355. and that

  2356. your

  2357. word

  2358. is

  2359. truth

  2360. and that

  2361. your

  2362. word

  2363. is

  2364. life.

  2365. We

  2366. thank you

  2367. that your

  2368. word

  2369. renews

  2370. even when

  2371. renewal and

  2372. change seems

  2373. impossible for

  2374. us.

  2375. And we

  2376. pray,

  2377. Lord,

  2378. that your

  2379. word

  2380. will be

  2381. actively

  2382. powerful in

  2383. our hearts

  2384. and in

  2385. those around

  2386. us.

  2387. It will

  2388. be

  2389. renewing

  2390. and

  2391. refreshing

  2392. to us

  2393. that even

  2394. in the

  2395. midst of

  2396. the times

  2397. of

  2398. weariness

  2399. we can

  2400. all

  2401. experience

  2402. that we

  2403. will know

  2404. that

  2405. renewing

  2406. strength

  2407. of the

  2408. Lord,

  2409. that we

  2410. shall know

  2411. what it

  2412. is to

  2413. mount up

  2414. with wings

  2415. like

  2416. eagles,

  2417. that we

  2418. should know

  2419. what it

  2420. is to

  2421. run and

  2422. not be

  2423. weary and

  2424. walk and

  2425. not faint.

  2426. We thank

  2427. you that

  2428. that is

  2429. through

  2430. your

  2431. strength

  2432. given.

  2433. So may

  2434. you bless

  2435. us with

  2436. it and

  2437. watch over

  2438. us we

  2439. pray in

  2440. Jesus'

  2441. name.

  2442. Amen.

  2443. We're

  2444. going to

  2445. conclude by

  2446. singing in

  2447. Psalm 89

  2448. once again

  2449. in the

  2450. Scottish

  2451. Psalter.

  2452. Psalm 89

  2453. at verse

  2454. 33.

  2455. page

  2456. 347

  2457. of the

  2458. psalm

  2459. book

  2460. psalm

  2461. 89

  2462. at

  2463. verse

  2464. 33.

  2465. Yet

  2466. I'll

  2467. not

  2468. take

  2469. my

  2470. love

  2471. from

  2472. him

  2473. nor

  2474. false

  2475. my

  2476. promise

  2477. make

  2478. my

  2479. covenant

  2480. I'll

  2481. not

  2482. break

  2483. nor

  2484. change

  2485. what

  2486. with

  2487. my

  2488. mouth

  2489. I

  2490. speak.

  2491. We have

  2492. that

  2493. assurance

  2494. of God

  2495. keeping

  2496. his

  2497. promises

  2498. and

  2499. keeping

  2500. his

  2501. love

  2502. towards

  2503. those

  2504. who

  2505. are

  2506. his

  2507. own.

  2508. Psalm

    Psalms 89:33

  2509. 89

  2510. verse

  2511. 33

  2512. and

  2513. the tune

  2514. is

  2515. Effingham.

  2516. Yet

  2517. I'll

  2518. not

  2519. tame

  2520. my

  2521. love

  2522. from

  2523. him

  2524. nor

  2525. false

  2526. my

  2527. promise

  2528. may

  2529. I

  2530. can

  2531. that

  2532. child

  2533. of

  2534. pain

  2535. or

  2536. change

  2537. what

  2538. with

  2539. my

  2540. love

  2541. I

  2542. say

  2543. yet

  2544. I

  2545. look

  2546. in

  2547. once

  2548. by

  2549. my

  2550. holiness

  2551. ham

  2552. van

2553. The Lord shall pass the sun before the dust for rain.

2554. If like the moon shall ever be,

  2555. He's done with steadfastly,

2556. And I to the which in the air

  2557. Doth witness faithfully.

2558. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right.

  2559. We'll close with a benediction.

2560. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God,

2561. Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon

2562. And abide with you all now and forevermore.

  2563. Amen.

  2564. Amen.

  2565. Amen.

  2566. Amen.

  2567. Amen.

  2568. Amen.

  2569. Amen.

  2570. Amen.

  2571. Amen.

  2572. Amen.

  2573. Amen.

  2574. Amen.

  2575. Amen.

  2576. Amen.

  2577. Amen.

  2578. Amen.

  2579. Amen.

  2580. Amen.
