  1. We're going to begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise in Psalm 96a.

  2. Sing Psalm's version, page 1 to 6 of the psalm books.

  3. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 10.

  4. Psalm 96a, the tune is Bloxam.

  5. We sing from the beginning,

  6. Sing a new song to the Lord, sing praises to his name and his salvation day by day,

  7. let all the earth proclaim.

  8. We sing from verse 1 to verse 10 to God's praise.

  9. We stand to sing.

  10. Oh, sing a new song to the Lord, sing praises to his name

  11. and his salvation day by day, let all the earth proclaim.

  12. His glory and his mighty deeds to every land declare.

  13. How great and awesome is the Lord, with him no cross compare.

  14. For other gods are wood and stone, the Lord made heaven's height.

  15. All power and majesty are his, he dwells in glorious light.

  16. All nations to the Lord, ascribe the glory that is due.

  17. Glory and strength ascribe to God, and praise his name on you.

  18. Enter his words with joy, and bring an offering with you.

  19. Worship the Lord in holy faith.

  20. All earth before them bow.

  21. Tell everyone, the Lord is king, established is the earth.

  22. And cannot move.

  23. The Lord will judge the people's sin is true.

  24. Amen.

  25. Let's come to God in prayer.

  26. Let us pray.

  27. Lord, our gracious God, our Father in heaven,

  28. as we gather to unite our hearts and praise this evening hour,

  29. we thank you for the blessings of this day.

  30. We thank you for your mercies in it.

  31. Lord, we thank you for the joy that we have in worshiping you.

  32. And even for the song, the psalm that we've sung,

  33. it reminds us that you give us a new song to praise you,

  34. to praise your name.

  35. And we thank you that it's a song of salvation,

  36. for you are the one alone who is able to save.

  37. And we thank you for your ongoing work of salvation to your people.

  38. That you are a God who continues to remember us

  39. and to help us in all our different needs.

  40. That you are a God who reigns over the world

  41. and calls the people of this world to come

  42. and offer up glory and praise to you.

  43. Tell every nation, tell every land,

  44. the Lord is king, the psalmist says.

  45. And we thank you that your word goes out with power

  46. in so many different ways and places.

  47. We thank you for all your people who serve you

  48. in proclaiming the gospel,

  49. in proclaiming it far and wide

  50. to people of every tribe and tongue.

  51. We thank you for all the gifts that you have given

  52. down through the generations to your people.

  53. For as we hold your word in our hands this evening,

  54. as we have the holy scriptures before us,

  55. we realize that it is through your great works of providence

  56. and through your will and your gifts given to many

  57. down through the generations

  58. to translate and to print

  59. and to make your word in a form

  60. that is so unchanging and unchangeable.

  61. And we thank you that your word is passed down

  62. and that it's translated into so many different languages.

  63. Even throughout the world today,

  64. when we hear the numbers of languages

  65. and forms that your word is translated into,

  66. we marvel.

  67. We marvel that there are so many

  68. and we marvel that you are a God

  69. who remembers each one

  70. and longs for all to come to know you.

  71. And so we pray for your power

  72. and your glory to be seen

  73. throughout our world and throughout our nations,

  74. that we would remind ourselves,

  75. as your word does so often,

  76. that when we feel a sense of despair

  77. and dejection in the day in which we live,

  78. that there is nothing new under the sun.

  79. There have been times,

  80. even as we see in your word,

  81. that high points when your people

  82. have been blessed so richly

  83. and praised you so lovingly and so loudly.

  84. And yet there are other times

  85. when your people have turned away,

  86. when they've turned to their own hearts

  87. and to their own ways

  88. and forgotten God.

  89. And the warnings are there before us so often.

  90. And we know today, Lord,

  91. that we live in a day

  92. when many do forget you,

  93. where many choose to have nothing to do with you

  94. and even to reject you in vehement ways.

  95. Not just to reject,

  96. but to persecute those who believe

  97. and to seek to destroy

  98. the Christian faith and the Christian church.

  99. But we do thank you

  100. that you are God and Lord,

  101. head of the church,

  102. that you have established

  103. and that nothing can overcome.

  104. We thank you that even,

  105. as the word says,

  106. the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  107. And so we thank you

  108. that in this day in which we live,

  109. we have these assurances,

  110. these promises,

  111. and these things that we can take

  112. as confidence and hope

  113. that you are building your church

  114. upon the rock that is Jesus Christ.

  115. Christ.

  116. And we thank you

  117. that the gospel is founded in him,

  118. that in him there is good news,

  119. in him there is the one

  120. who gives that assurance

  121. of forgiveness for sin

  122. as we put our trust in him,

  123. that he is the one

  124. who gives the hope of eternal life,

  125. that he is the one

  126. who spoke to disciples long ago,

  127. reminding them that he is the way,

  128. the truth, and the life,

  129. that there is no way to the Father

  130. but by him.

  131. And so we thank you

  132. that that is still true to this day.

  133. And may we know you

  134. leading us in our worship this evening,

  135. leading us into your truth,

  136. leading us into your word,

  137. and helping us to hear

  138. what you have to say to us,

  139. helping us to be established

  140. and grounded in your word

  141. and in your truth

  142. in a way that it doesn't just

  143. impact us for a moment here,

  144. but that it will go with us

  145. into the rest of the week ahead.

  146. That the word that we hear

  147. will be a word that we are able

  148. to share and lean on

  149. and rely upon in all the days

  150. of this week ahead, God willing.

  151. That it will be your truth

  152. that shapes us,

  153. that gives us discernment,

  154. that gives us willingness,

  155. that gives us boldness and courage,

  156. that gives us all that we need

  157. to live in this world

  158. and to be the light of the gospel

  159. among the people around us.

  160. And so we ask, O Lord,

  161. that you will unite our hearts

  162. and praise and worship this evening

  163. and unite our hearts

  164. in all that we seek to do

  165. in your name.

  166. As we especially pray

  167. for the week ahead,

  168. we think of that meeting

  169. on Wednesday evening,

  170. a congregational meeting,

  171. and we just commit it to you

  172. for your unifying presence

  173. as we read in the bulletin

  174. for that to be in our midst

  175. in these days.

  176. That you would unite our hearts

  177. together in praise

  178. and worship and prayer to you

  179. as the one that we depend on

  180. for all things.

  181. And we pray, Lord,

  182. for that spirit of oneness,

  183. spirit of encouragement,

  184. spirit to look to you

  185. that we might know you're leading

  186. and your guidance

  187. in all of these things

  188. as we appoint a vacancy committee,

  189. as we seek to invite preachers

  190. to come and minister here,

  191. as we seek to call a minister,

  192. God willing,

  193. in the not-too-distant future.

  194. We do pray, Lord,

  195. that your will be done

  196. and that you would give us

  197. your wisdom and your help in it.

  198. And we thank you

  199. that we have so many people here

  200. who you use for your glory,

  201. that the work goes on day by day

  202. and week by week.

  203. Among our young people,

  204. we thank you for our Sunday school

  205. and creche and tweenies

  206. and Bible class.

  207. We thank you for the youth fellowship.

  208. We thank you for the explorers.

  209. We thank you for the toddler group.

  210. Thank you for all these ways

  211. of coming alongside people,

  212. especially our young people,

  213. teaching them,

  214. helping them along the way,

  215. guiding them in your truth

  216. and in your word

  217. to walk closely with you.

  218. We do pray, Lord,

  219. that our young people,

  220. that they would seek you

  221. in the days of their youth.

  222. They seek you while you are to be found.

  223. Seek you while their hearts

  224. are close to you

  225. and tender to you.

  226. Because we know, Lord,

  227. we live in a world

  228. filled with so many distractions,

  229. so many things

  230. that will lead us away from you.

  231. And so we pray

  232. that you will guard them

  233. and guard us all,

  234. guard us in our hearts and minds

  235. that we might know

  236. your peace with us.

  237. We pray, too,

  238. for the Fridays at the Free

  239. and the over 55s.

  240. We thank you for that meeting

  241. last Friday

  242. and, God willing,

  243. the meeting of the Fridays

  244. at the Free this coming week.

  245. We thank you for all the encouragements

  246. it gives

  247. and gathering in fellowship together

  248. and gathering

  249. to encourage one another

  250. and to come alongside each other

  251. in different ways.

  252. We do pray your blessing

  253. upon all that we do

  254. to come alongside

  255. in these times.

  256. Above all,

  257. we pray, Lord,

  258. to see people coming,

  259. to be under the gospel,

  260. to be curious,

  261. to be asking questions,

  262. to be exploring the Word

  263. and seeing what it says to them.

  264. And we thank you

  265. for the Thursday evening meetings

  266. of the big questions.

  267. We pray, Lord,

  268. that we will be encouraged

  269. to invite people

  270. to come along ourselves,

  271. even to come and hear

  272. and share

  273. and experience together

  274. the riches of your truth,

  275. the riches of your Word,

  276. and to be built up

  277. in the faith through it.

  278. So, Lord,

  279. may you hear our prayers

  280. for all of these things.

  281. We ask, O Lord,

  282. too,

  283. for your blessing

  284. on the wider church.

  285. We thank you

  286. for those who you have called

  287. into ministry

  288. and those who are training in it.

  289. We think tonight

  290. of Scott and Fiona

  291. as they have gone from us

  292. to the congregation

  293. of North Harris.

  294. We pray for them

  295. as they settle

  296. into a new home

  297. in Scalpy

  298. and a new congregation

  299. in Tarbert

  300. and a new school

  301. for the girls,

  302. for Katie Bell

  303. and Lily May.

  304. We pray that you will help them

  305. and be with them,

  306. that you will help them

  307. to find people around them

  308. who will encourage them

  309. and draw alongside them

  310. and help them

  311. along the way.

  312. And we do pray

  313. that you will continue

  314. to bless Scott

  315. and his training

  316. and all others

  317. who have started back

  318. in the seminary

  319. in these past weeks.

  320. O Lord,

  321. we pray for those

  322. who go on in their studies

  323. and those who are just beginning.

  324. We pray to see

  325. your hand upon them

  326. for good

  327. and for your blessing

  328. over the seminary

  329. and upon all the leaders there,

  330. the lecturers

  331. and the staff

  332. and all who are involved

  333. in the training process.

  334. Lord,

  335. may they know

  336. your rich hand upon them.

  337. May they know

  338. your goodness to them.

  339. We pray for our nation

  340. and our world

  341. and our leaders

  342. and all that we see around us

  343. when there are so many challenges

  344. since we hear

  345. seemingly every day

  346. of those who are seeking

  347. to find peace

  348. and only finding trouble

  349. and we hear of immigrants

  350. crossing the channel

  351. and so many lives being lost

  352. and maybe turmoil

  353. being experienced

  354. by those who are trying

  355. to get across

  356. or escaping

  357. and fleeing

  358. so many different places.

  359. Lord,

  360. there are so many

  361. of these crises

  362. all around us.

  363. There are troubles

  364. every way we look

  365. and Lord,

  366. we just pray

  367. have mercy,

  368. have mercy upon us.

  369. Remember us, Lord.

  370. Come in your power.

  371. Come in a day

  372. of your power

  373. into our midst

  374. that your gospel

  375. would flourish,

  376. that your glory

  377. would be seen

  378. to all ends

  379. of the earth.

  380. How we need you, Lord,

  381. and how we plead with you

  382. to come.

  383. So Lord,

  384. hear our prayers.

  385. Continue with us

  386. in all our needs

  387. personally here

  388. and collectively

  389. as a people

  390. in our homes

  391. and our families.

  392. You know our needs

  393. as we were thinking

  394. this morning

  395. and we thank you

  396. for the great comfort

  397. that you are able

  398. to give.

  399. So comfort

  400. all who need you

  401. in so many different ways.

  402. Hear our prayers.

  403. Continue with us now

  404. and help us to sing

  405. to your glory.

  406. Lift up our voices

  407. to you in praise

  408. and to have ears

  409. to hear your word.

  410. May we know

  411. your spirit upon us

  412. leading us

  413. in all of these things.

  414. We ask all

  415. looking to our Lord

  416. and Saviour,

  417. Jesus Christ,

  418. looking to forgiveness

  419. in him

  420. that we might know

  421. his blessing

  422. in each of our lives.

  423. We ask it

  424. in his precious name

  425. and for his glory.

  426. Amen.

  427. We'll continue

  428. to worship God

  429. and sing

  430. to his praise.

  431. This time

  432. in Psalm 20

  433. in the Scottish Psalter,

  434. page 224.

  435. Psalm 20

  436. on page 224.

  437. We're going to sing

  438. from verse 3

  439. down to the end

  440. of the psalm.

  441. The tune is Walsall.

  442. Let him remember

  443. all thy gifts,

  444. accept thy sacrifice,

  445. grant thee

  446. thy heart's wish

  447. and fulfill

  448. thy thoughts

  449. and counsel wise.

  450. In thy salvation

  451. we will joy

  452. in our God's name

  453. we will display

  454. our banners

  455. and the Lord

  456. the prayers

  457. all fulfill.

  458. We'll sing

  459. from verse 3

  460. down to the end

  461. of the psalm.

  462. Psalm 20

  463. to God's praise.

  464. Amen.

  465. Let him remember

  466. all thy gifts,

  467. accept thy sacrifice,

  468. grant thee

  469. grant thee

  470. thy heart's wish

  471. and fulfill

  472. thy thoughts

  473. and counsel wise.

  474. In thy salvation

  475. we will joy

  476. in our God's name

  477. in our God's name

  478. we will display

  479. our banners

  480. and the Lord

  481. thy prayers

  482. all fulfill.

  483. God's name

  484. now know

  485. thy God

  486. his King

  487. that save

  488. me from

  489. his holy

  490. heaven

  491. will hear

  492. him

  493. with

  494. the saving

  495. strength

  496. by his own

  497. right hand

  498. him

  499. in chariots

  500. some

  501. put confidence

  502. some

  503. horses

  504. trust upon

  505. but

  506. we

  507. remember

  508. well

  509. the name

  510. of

  511. our

  512. Lord

  513. God

  514. alone

  515. we

  516. rise

  517. and

  518. upright

  519. stand

  520. when

  521. we

  522. are

  523. bowed

  524. down

  525. and

  526. fall

  527. deliver

  528. Lord

  529. and

  530. let

  531. the

  532. King

  533. us

  534. hear

  535. when

  536. we

  537. do

  538. all

  539. we

  540. can

  541. turn

  542. to read

  543. God's

  544. word

  545. together

  546. now

  547. in

  548. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  549. chapter

  550. 10

  551. so

  552. in the

  553. Old Testament

  554. the book

  555. of

  556. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  557. chapter

  558. 10

  559. you'll

  560. find it

  561. around

  562. page

  563. 185

  564. of the

  565. church

  566. bibles

  567. and we're

  568. going to

  569. read

  570. the whole

  571. of this

  572. chapter

  573. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  574. chapter

  575. 10

  576. from

  577. verse

  578. 1

  579. at

  580. that

  581. time

  582. the

  583. Lord

  584. said

  585. to

  586. me

  587. cut

  588. for

  589. yourself

  590. two

  591. tablets

  592. of

  593. stone

  594. like

  595. the

  596. first

  597. and

  598. come

  599. up

  600. to

  601. me

  602. on

  603. the

  604. mountain

  605. and

  606. make

  607. an

  608. ark

  609. of

  610. wood

  611. and

  612. I

  613. will

  614. write

  615. on

  616. the

  617. tablets

  618. the

  619. words

  620. that

  621. were

  622. on

  623. the

  624. first

  625. tablets

  626. that

  627. you

  628. broke

  629. and

  630. you

  631. shall

  632. put

  633. them

  634. in

  635. the

  636. ark

  637. so

  638. I

  639. made

  640. an

  641. ark

  642. of

  643. a

  644. wood

  645. and

  646. went

  647. up

  648. the

  649. mountain

  650. with

  651. the

  652. two

  653. tablets

  654. in

  655. my

  656. hand

  657. and

  658. he

  659. wrote

  660. on

  661. the

1306. We can turn back together to our reading in Deuteronomy chapter 10.

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

1307. We can look at verse 12 to verse 16 in particular together this evening.

  1308. Deuteronomy chapter 10 at verse 12.

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

1309. And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you?

1310. But to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

1311. and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good.

1312. Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.

1313. Yet the Lord set his heart and love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.

1314. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stubborn, for the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords.

  1315. And so on.

1316. I hope you all make it a priority at some point in the day.

1317. I hope you start the day and end the day looking at the word of God, making it a priority to read your Bibles.

1318. But how do you read it?

1319. What approach do you take to it?

1320. Are you one who just maybe sticks in the same kind of area?

1321. Or do you like to read through it in a more ordinary manner?

1322. Or maybe trying to start from the beginning and just read your way through it?

1323. We can all have different ways of approaching how we read the word of God.

1324. Bishop J.C. Ryle, a bishop in England many years ago and a writer of many books, many books I'm sure that many of you are familiar with.

1325. Most homes will have his book on holiness or other ones like that.

1326. Well, he once said that we must read our Bibles like men digging for hidden treasure.

1327. That is how we are to approach reading our Bibles as men, women, boys and girls digging for hidden treasure.

1328. With that sense of anticipation, that sense of longing that we're going to find something of riches in this word of God.

1329. We've thought about it as we've been looking at Habakkuk, digging for nuggets of gold in Habakkuk.

1330. How in the midst of so many things that just leave people in dismay and disarray,

1331. there are these nuggets, these precious nuggets of gold that give us a sense of encouragement.

1332. And God willing, we'll come back to Habakkuk next Sunday morning, all being well.

1333. But when we come to read the word of God, we might be maybe more inclined to read the New Testament,

1334. to go into the Gospels or the letters of Paul.

1335. Or maybe if we go into the Old Testament, we stick to maybe passages that we've been familiar with from a very young age.

1336. The stories like David and Goliath or Daniel and the Lion's Den or all these kinds of accounts that we read of,

1337. we maybe become more selective.

1338. Who has in their favorite books the book of Deuteronomy?

1339. Is it a book that you keep going back to as a book that you think there's so much nuggets of gold in here

1340. that I just long to go back to it and read it again and again?

1341. It's not always a book maybe that stands out in our list of favorites.

1342. And yet, as you go through the book of Deuteronomy, you find it's such an important book.

1343. An important book in the sense of the Old Testament, but also as you go into the New Testament.

1344. What it's speaking about is so important, not just for Moses and his day, but for ourselves today.

1345. There's so much we can learn from this book.

1346. There's so much we see that has such great significance for us.

1347. There's one commentator, one writer, one theologian called Gordon Wenham.

1348. And he speaks of the significance of the book of Deuteronomy in this way.

1349. He calls it the linchpin of the Old Testament.

1350. So the linchpin is something that hinges things together.

1351. Like a trailer has a linchpin that connects it to whatever's towing it.

1352. So you've got this linchpin that makes sure that everything else is secure.

1353. And he describes the book of Deuteronomy in that way.

1354. It's like a linchpin that keeps things secure.

1355. So what's come before it and what comes after it is held secure by what we read in the book of Deuteronomy.

1356. So why is it so important?

1357. Why is it a book that we should be so interested in?

1358. When you think about how often it's quoted in the New Testament, you maybe think, where do I see it quoted?

1359. Well, alongside Genesis, Psalms, and the book of Isaiah, it is the most quoted book in the New Testament.

1360. So again, that highlights for us that there is significance in this book of Deuteronomy.

1361. We're not putting it above other books, but we're just seeing that it's not a book we should ignore.

1362. It's not a book we should think of just easily passing by it because you find so much riches in it.

  1363. And it's important hasn't waned.

1364. It's still important for us today, just as much as it was, as Moses was with the children of Israel here, about to enter into the promised land.

1365. They were on the border.

1366. They were on the cusp of going into the promised land.

1367. The Lord had brought them through the Exodus.

1368. He had brought them out of Egypt through so many trials.

1369. And here they were about to go into the promised land.

1370. And what you find with the book of Deuteronomy is it begins and it ends with a reminder of God's covenant.

  1371. That's God's relationship with his people.

1372. That God has promised many things to his people.

1373. If you look in chapter 4, verse 31, there it said,

1374. So there's that promise at the start.

1375. And then if you jump forward to chapter 29, and just even looking at the heading of that chapter,

1376. it's the covenant renewed in Moab.

1377. You go through that chapter and it's a reminder of God's covenant that he made with Moses and with his people.

1378. So you find the whole book has at its bookends, if you like, the covenant.

1379. The reminder of God's promise to his people.

1380. And so Moses is here preaching to the people.

1381. He's reminding them as they're about to enter the promised land that their allegiance is to be to God.

1382. Because they are going into a land that is full of so many other gods.

1383. False gods, idols, temptations that they will be drawn away from worshipping God

1384. and their allegiance going somewhere else.

1385. What was the danger that they faced?

1386. The danger was that they would forget the Lord their God.

1387. And that's the serious nature of this book.

1388. That's what you see as the bookends with God showing his remembrance of his people

1389. and his covenant love to them.

1390. Within and in between that, there is this danger of the people forgetting God.

1391. And you say, well, they wouldn't.

1392. Surely they wouldn't forget God.

1393. After all he's done for them.

1394. After all he's done in taking them out of Egypt, through the wilderness, all these years,

1395. and now on the border of the promised land,

1396. and taking them into a land that's described as flowing with milk and honey,

1397. riches and everything that they need.

1398. Surely they wouldn't forget the Lord.

1399. The warning rings in their ears in chapter 8, verse 11, 14, and 19.

1400. There you see the warning go out so powerfully,

  1401. where Moses says,

1402. Take care lest you forget the Lord your God

1403. by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes which I command you today.

1404. It's this warning ringing in their ears.

1405. And yet, as are we.

1406. And we say to ourselves, well, we wouldn't forget the Lord.

1407. We wouldn't forget his goodness to us.

1408. We wouldn't forget the blessings of a Christian upbringing, a Christian home.

1409. We wouldn't forget what he's saying to us through his word.

  1410. We would.

  1411. And we do.

1412. That is the sad nature of who we are.

1413. How quickly we forget the Lord.

1414. Even as we go into this week ahead,

1415. we might have that warning ringing in our ears.

1416. Do not forget the Lord.

1417. Maybe on Monday it's loud and clear.

1418. On Tuesday it's just a little bit quieter.

1419. By Wednesday we've just taken up by the rest of the ways of the world.

1420. We forget about the Lord.

1421. But as we come into chapter 10,

1422. what we want to see together this evening,

1423. as we look at this section,

  1424. verse 12 to verse 16, 17 there,

1425. what we are reminded of is an insight of God's love to us.

1426. And it comes about in this situation where,

1427. as we read at the beginning of chapter 10,

1428. the Lord is still remembering his people.

1429. He gives the Ten Commandments to them,

1430. despite, as you see in chapter 9,

1431. the golden calf when they'd just turned their back on God so quickly,

1432. that he still remembers them.

  1433. And in verse,

  1434. excuse me,

  1435. in verse 10

  1436. and verse 11 there,

1437. you find that he's talking there about

  1438. still remembering and interceding

  1439. for his people.

1440. Moses has prayed with God

1441. and the Lord listened to me,

1442. it says in verse 10,

1443. and the Lord was unwilling to destroy you.

1444. There's that mercy you see there.

  1445. He's showing mercy

1446. in the midst of their disobedience,

1447. in the midst of their forgetfulness.

  1448. He's still a God

  1449. who shows mercy.

1450. And the Lord longs for his people

1451. to come and trust in him.

1452. And that's the call that goes out through this passage

1453. to ourselves this evening as well.

  1454. To remember that God

1455. is a God who could destroy us.

1456. He could give us what we deserve,

  1457. what our sins deserve,

  1458. is death.

  1459. But he shows mercy.

  1460. And he gives time.

1461. And he calls to us to come.

1462. He shows us his great love towards us.

1463. Through his son, Christ Jesus.

1464. And in that love that he shows towards us,

1465. he calls on us to love him

1466. because he first loved us.

1467. And so I want us to take these three things

1468. from these verses as we look at them

  1469. together this evening.

  1470. As Moses is here

  1471. preaching to the people,

1472. as he's ministering to them,

1473. he's saying three things to them.

1474. The first is he's giving them

  1475. what the Lord requires.

  1476. There's a requirement here.

1477. If we want to know

  1478. the Lord's blessing,

  1479. there is a requirement.

  1480. And then secondly,

1481. he gives them a reminder.

1482. A reminder of his love.

1483. And then the third thing that we see

1484. is this calls for a response.

1485. So we have a requirement,

  1486. a reminder,

  1487. and a response.

1488. And the first thing we see

  1489. is a reminder.

  1490. In verse 12 there,

  1491. having reminded them

1492. of how he has interceded

1493. and how he has said,

1494. the Lord was unwilling to destroy you,

  1495. he's showing God's love to them,

  1496. God's mercy to them.

1497. And as you see God's mercy,

1498. does that not demand a response?

  1499. Well, it does,

  1500. as you see here.

  1501. Because in verse 12,

1502. Moses goes on and he says,

  1503. and now Israel,

  1504. now you people,

  1505. what does the Lord,

  1506. your God,

  1507. require of you?

1508. In light of his mercy,

1509. in light of his sparing you,

1510. what does he require of you?

1511. And he goes on to give them the answer.

  1512. He says,

1513. but to fear the Lord,

  1514. your God,

1515. to walk in all his ways,

  1516. to love him,

  1517. to serve the Lord,

  1518. your God,

  1519. with all your heart

1520. and with all your soul,

1521. and to keep the commandments

1522. and statutes of the Lord,

1523. which I am commanding you today.

1524. there is what the Lord,

  1525. your God,

  1526. requires of you.

  1527. And in many ways,

1528. you could look at that list

  1529. and think,

  1530. there's an outward side

  1531. to that list.

  1532. To fear the Lord

  1533. is to show

  1534. an honor to God,

  1535. to recognize

  1536. who he is,

1537. to walk in his ways,

  1538. to love him,

  1539. to serve him,

  1540. to keep his word.

  1541. And what you see

1542. as you go through the scriptures

  1543. is that for people,

  1544. God's people

  1545. down through generations,

1546. this can be an outward show.

1547. But what he's warning here

1548. is it's got to be more

  1549. than that.

1550. It's got to be more

1551. than just an outward show

  1552. of things.

1553. And what he's getting at

  1554. in this section

  1555. is the heart.

1556. And as we'll see later on,

  1557. it's the heart

  1558. that needs

  1559. to change.

  1560. And it's the heart

  1561. that needs to have

  1562. been impacted

1563. by all of these things.

  1564. He requires of you

  1565. to fear the Lord,

  1566. not just outwardly,

  1567. but inwardly.

  1568. He requires of you

  1569. to love him,

1570. not just in an outward showing,

1571. but with all your heart

  1572. inwardly.

  1573. And your service

  1574. must come

  1575. from that loving

  1576. him inwardly.

  1577. Keeping his word

  1578. must be just

1579. not to make people see it,

  1580. but because you love

  1581. the Lord

  1582. with all your heart,

  1583. you lay up

  1584. his word

  1585. in your heart.

  1586. And it's the goal

  1587. that you're searching for,

  1588. that you're searching

  1589. the scriptures

  1590. to see

  1591. Lord,

  1592. what do you want

  1593. of me?

  1594. Moses had been assigned

  1595. as the leader

  1596. of the people.

  1597. And if he was

  1598. to lead the people

  1599. well,

1600. he was to be one

1601. who lived in this way

  1602. as well.

  1603. And again,

  1604. not just outwardly,

  1605. but with all

  1606. his heart.

  1607. So what Moses

  1608. is saying here

  1609. to the people is,

  1610. don't look at me

  1611. as your leader.

  1612. Look to God.

  1613. fear the Lord.

  1614. Don't look to me

  1615. and love me,

  1616. Moses is saying.

  1617. Love God.

  1618. Don't look to me

  1619. and serve me.

  1620. Serve the Lord.

  1621. Don't look to me

  1622. and keep the words

1623. that I am giving you.

1624. It's the word of God.

  1625. Keep his word.

  1626. not doing anything

  1627. for man,

  1628. not doing anything

  1629. for an outward show

  1630. to anybody else,

  1631. but doing it

  1632. for the Lord.

  1633. Because you see

  1634. what the Lord

  1635. has done

  1636. for you.

  1637. Do you ever ask

  1638. yourself that question,

  1639. what does the Lord

  1640. require of me?

  1641. And maybe you've got

  1642. this list of things

  1643. that you think,

1644. this is what would be good

  1645. before the Lord

  1646. for me to do.

  1647. And you'll do it

  1648. to suit yourself.

  1649. Because if you were

  1650. to actually do

  1651. everything that the Lord

  1652. requires of you,

  1653. it's a huge challenge.

  1654. Just think of what

  1655. he's saying there.

  1656. Fear the Lord,

  1657. walk in his ways,

  1658. love him,

  1659. serve him,

  1660. keep his word.

  1661. To do that

  1662. means it's difficult,

  1663. it's hard.

  1664. And you might say,

1665. oh, this is just too much,

  1666. I'll just try

1667. and do some of it.

  1668. And once you start

  1669. to just try

1670. and do some of it,

  1671. then you start

  1672. to fall away

1673. from the rest of it.

  1674. And then you just

  1675. fall back

  1676. into the old ways.

  1677. And then you realize

  1678. you're away

  1679. from God again.

  1680. We forget the Lord.

  1681. And that's the cycle

  1682. that you see

  1683. in Deuteronomy

  1684. as you go on

1685. through the word of God.

  1686. It's that constant cycle

  1687. that you see.

  1688. Forget one

  1689. and it leads

  1690. to forgetting the rest.

  1691. It leads

  1692. to forgetting God.

  1693. So it's to be

  1694. our priority

  1695. to do all

  1696. of these things.

  1697. And not just outwardly

  1698. but inwardly

  1699. with all

  1700. our hearts.

  1701. There's a great example

  1702. in Scripture

  1703. for us.

  1704. If we're looking

  1705. for an example

  1706. and I was reading

  1707. this about David

  1708. in the Old Testament

1709. in the book of Samuel.

  1710. There is a man

  1711. who is described

  1712. as a man

  1713. after God's

  1714. own heart.

  1715. He was a leader

  1716. who God chose

  1717. to lead his people

  1718. as well.

  1719. But what was

  1720. the qualities

  1721. that David had?

  1722. Well you could almost

  1723. say it was all

  1724. of these things.

  1725. He feared the Lord.

1726. He walked in his ways.

  1727. He loved him.

  1728. He served him.

  1729. He kept his word.

  1730. That was when

  1731. David was strong.

  1732. Going back to maybe

  1733. our favorite passages

1734. as we read in Scripture.

  1735. The ones we're familiar

1736. with from a young age.

  1737. We know David

  1738. and Goliath

  1739. and that story

  1740. of how David

  1741. conquered this giant

  1742. Goliath.

  1743. But I was reading

  1744. about this this week

  1745. and it said

1746. it's easy in the drama

  1747. of this event

  1748. that we miss

  1749. what David

  1750. was actually doing.

  1751. How he was fulfilling

  1752. these requirements.

  1753. How he didn't listen

  1754. to advice

  1755. of those around him

1756. of he should do this

1757. or he should do that.

  1758. That he listened

  1759. to God.

1760. And it was this verse

  1761. that the writer

  1762. was focusing on

  1763. in verse 40

  1764. of 1 Samuel chapter 17

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  1765. where you read

  1766. that account

  1767. of David and Goliath.

  1768. It says there

  1769. he chose

  1770. five smooth stones.

  1771. And you can easily

  1772. pass by

  1773. and think nothing

  1774. of that.

  1775. Or maybe

  1776. as some people

  1777. have done

  1778. you're asking questions

  1779. why five stones?

  1780. What did they represent?

1781. Why more than one stone?

  1782. Surely you only needed

  1783. one to kill Goliath.

1784. David was a man of faith.

  1785. Did he doubt

  1786. that God

  1787. would help him

  1788. in conquering

  1789. the giant Goliath?

  1790. Well

  1791. the writer pointed out

  1792. this

  1793. that later on

  1794. in 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 21:15–22

  1795. chapter 21

  1796. verse 15

  1797. to 22

  1798. there it mentions

  1799. giants.

  1800. other giants.

  1801. And it mentions

  1802. at least four

  1803. there by name.

  1804. So Goliath

  1805. wasn't

  1806. the only

  1807. giant.

  1808. So he didn't

  1809. just choose

  1810. any stones.

  1811. He didn't just

  1812. choose the first ones

  1813. that he came across.

1814. He knew what it was

  1815. to use a sling.

1816. He knew what he needed

  1817. to make

  1818. an accurate shot.

  1819. And so he did

1820. as he had always done.

  1821. He chose

  1822. the best.

  1823. the most suitable.

  1824. He didn't say

  1825. the Lord

1826. is going to do it

  1827. for me anyway.

  1828. I'll just pick up

  1829. any jagged rocks.

  1830. He recognised

  1831. his own

  1832. responsibility.

1833. And this is a point

  1834. that the writer

  1835. was getting at.

  1836. There was

  1837. our responsibility

  1838. and God's

  1839. divine

  1840. providence

  1841. in David's life.

  1842. And it was

  1843. the two

  1844. going

  1845. together.

  1846. It was

  1847. what the Lord

  1848. required

  1849. of David

  1850. to use

  1851. his common

  1852. sense

  1853. but to

  1854. trust

  1855. the Lord.

  1856. And as

  1857. Moses is

  1858. writing to

  1859. the people

  1860. here

  1861. as he is

  1862. teaching them

  1863. and as he is

  1864. teaching us

  1865. he's teaching us

  1866. these two things

  1867. as well.

  1868. Yes

  1869. we can

  1870. trust God

  1871. but it's not

  1872. a case of

  1873. well God's

  1874. going to do it

  1875. anyway.

  1876. It's not that

  1877. kind of

  1878. trust.

  1879. There's

  1880. our

  1881. responsibility

  1882. too and that's

  1883. the responsibility

  1884. here.

  1885. What does

  1886. the Lord

  1887. require of

  1888. you the same

  1889. as of David

  1890. to fear

  1891. the Lord

  1892. your God

  1893. to walk

  1894. in his ways

  1895. to love

  1896. him and serve

  1897. him and trust

  1898. his word.

  1899. That is what

  1900. required

  1901. of us.

  1902. The Lord

  1903. gives us

  1904. instruction

  1905. for a reason.

  1906. He gives us

  1907. commands for a

  1908. reason.

  1909. In verse 13

  1910. he says here

  1911. it's for

  1912. your good.

  1913. All of

  1914. these things

  1915. are for

  1916. your good.

  1917. In chapter

  1918. 4, 5, 6

  1919. and 12

  1920. he's giving

  1921. instructions there

  1922. in these chapters

  1923. with the phrase

  1924. that it may

  1925. go well

  1926. with you.

  1927. It's the phrase

  1928. that keeps

  1929. coming up.

  1930. So we have

  1931. requirements in

  1932. life.

  1933. They are for

  1934. our good

  1935. that it may

  1936. go well

  1937. with you.

  1938. The question

  1939. is

  1940. are we

  1941. fulfilling

  1942. them?

  1943. Are we

  1944. listening to

  1945. the requirements

  1946. that the

  1947. Lord gives?

  1948. Are we

  1949. choosing to

  1950. ignore them

  1951. and push

  1952. them away

  1953. and forgetting

  1954. the Lord?

  1955. We want

  1956. to do

  1957. as the

  1958. Lord requires.

  1959. We want

  1960. to love

  1961. him with

  1962. all our

  1963. hearts.

  1964. And the

  1965. second thing

  1966. we see

  1967. here is a

  1968. reminder.

  1969. A

  1970. reminder

  1971. in verse

  1972. 15.

  1973. 15.

  1974. yet it

  1975. says there

  1976. the

  1977. Lord

  1978. set

  1979. his

  1980. heart

  1981. in

  1982. love

  1983. on

  1984. your

  1985. fathers.

  1986. And what's

  1987. interesting

  1988. about this

  1989. is what

  1990. comes in

  1991. verse 14

  1992. as well.

  1993. It says

  1994. he's commanding

  1995. these things

  1996. for your

  1997. good.

  1998. behold

  1999. to the

  2000. Lord your

  2001. God

  2002. belong

  2003. heaven

  2004. and the

  2005. heavens

  2006. of heavens

  2007. the earth

  2008. with all

  2009. that is

  2010. in it.

  2011. The Lord

  2012. has it

  2013. all

  2014. but yet

  2015. the Lord

  2016. set his

  2017. heart

  2018. and love

  2019. on your

  2020. fathers

  2021. and chose

  2022. their offspring

  2023. after them

  2024. you above

  2025. all peoples

  2026. as you are

  2027. this day.

  2028. there's a

  2029. powerful

  2030. reminder

  2031. there

  2032. of the

  2033. love

  2034. of God.

  2035. The power

  2036. of God

  2037. is seen

  2038. in these

  2039. verses

  2040. in verse

  2041. 14.

  2042. The Lord

  2043. your God

  2044. belong

  2045. heaven

  2046. and heaven

  2047. of heavens

  2048. the earth

  2049. and all

  2050. that is

  2051. in them.

  2052. He is a

  2053. powerful

  2054. God.

  2055. He has

  2056. everything

  2057. in his

  2058. hands.

  2059. As we

  2060. sang in

  2061. Psalm 96

  2062. great is

  2063. the Lord

  2064. and greatly

  2065. to be

  2066. praised.

  2067. God

  2068. is an

  2069. awesome

  2070. God.

  2071. But in

  2072. the midst

  2073. of this

  2074. majesty

  2075. and this

  2076. power

  2077. in verse

  2078. 15

  2079. yet the

  2080. Lord

  2081. set his

  2082. heart

  2083. in love

  2084. on you

  2085. your fathers

  2086. and on

  2087. you.

  2088. So he's

  2089. asking and

  2090. there's a

  2091. challenge

  2092. there.

  2093. What does

  2094. the Lord

  2095. require of

  2096. you?

  2097. How is

  2098. your heart?

  2099. Well here's

  2100. a reminder

  2101. of God's

  2102. heart to

  2103. his people.

  2104. The Lord

  2105. has set

  2106. his heart

  2107. in love

  2108. on you.

  2109. With such

  2110. care and

  2111. attention

  2112. given to

  2113. us,

  2114. how could

  2115. we forget

  2116. the Lord?

  2117. How could

  2118. we possibly

  2119. forget the

  2120. Lord?

  2121. The Lord

  2122. who has

  2123. power over

  2124. all things

  2125. yet has

  2126. set his

  2127. heart

  2128. on his

  2129. people.

  2130. You think

  2131. of the

  2132. kind of

  2133. ways that

  2134. people can

  2135. feel there

  2136. to come

  2137. and worship

  2138. God.

  2139. People are

  2140. called to

  2141. follow and

  2142. worship God.

  2143. Sometimes

  2144. it's out of

  2145. a sense

  2146. of guilt.

  2147. Is that

  2148. really going

  2149. to make

  2150. us worship

  2151. God?

  2152. Other

  2153. times it's

  2154. almost when

  2155. you feel

  2156. that God

  2157. is dictating

  2158. to us

  2159. that we

  2160. must love

  2161. him.

  2162. Is that

  2163. how God

  2164. wants us

  2165. to worship

  2166. him?

  2167. It's like

  2168. thinking of

  2169. an arranged

  2170. marriage where

  2171. someone doesn't

  2172. want to go

  2173. in it but

  2174. they're terrified

  2175. and yet they're

  2176. forced to marry

  2177. someone they

  2178. don't love.

  2179. But that's

  2180. not the

  2181. way God

  2182. has a

  2183. relationship

  2184. with us.

  2185. Remember

  2186. the covenant

  2187. at the

  2188. beginning and

  2189. the end

  2190. how he has

  2191. not forgotten

  2192. his people

  2193. and here in

  2194. the midst

  2195. of even

  2196. their turning

  2197. away from

  2198. him with

  2199. a golden

  2200. calf in

  2201. chapter 9

  2202. how Moses

  2203. has come

  2204. and he's

  2205. had this

  2206. promise the

  2207. Lord is

  2208. unwilling to

  2209. destroy you

  2210. and then you

  2211. have this

  2212. in verse 15

  2213. yet the

  2214. Lord set

  2215. his heart

  2216. in love

  2217. on you.

  2218. Is there

  2219. not a

  2220. reason there

  2221. to love

  2222. him?

  2223. Because he

  2224. loves us

  2225. with such

  2226. a powerful

  2227. love.

  2228. We see

  2229. who he

  2230. is and

  2231. we see

  2232. what he

  2233. has done

  2234. for us.

  2235. A love

  2236. that has

  2237. remembered

  2238. us.

  2239. A remembering

  2240. love that

  2241. we see

  2242. in the

  2243. cross.

  2244. A remembering

  2245. love that

  2246. does not

  2247. let us

  2248. go.

  2249. A love

  2250. that as

  2251. we were

  2252. looking at

  2253. this morning

  2254. a love

  2255. that comforts

  2256. us in

  2257. all our

  2258. different

  2259. needs.

  2260. And that

  2261. is a love

  2262. that he

  2263. has for

  2264. his people.

  2265. And not

  2266. just the

  2267. children of

  2268. Israel here

  2269. because we

  2270. become his

  2271. people.

  2272. Peter makes

  2273. that clear

  2274. in his

  2275. first letter

  2276. as he's

  2277. writing to

  2278. the people

  2279. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  2280. chapter 2

  2281. he says

  2282. you are

  2283. a chosen

  2284. people

  2285. a royal

  2286. priesthood

  2287. a holy

  2288. nation

  2289. a people

  2290. belonging

  2291. to God

  2292. that you

  2293. may declare

  2294. the praises

  2295. of him

  2296. who called

  2297. you out

  2298. of darkness

  2299. into his

  2300. wonderful

  2301. light.

  2302. You are

  2303. his people

  2304. when he

  2305. has done

  2306. that for

  2307. you.

  2308. When he

  2309. has taken

  2310. you and

  2311. called you

  2312. out of his

  2313. darkness

  2314. into his

  2315. marvelous

  2316. light.

  2317. Peter goes

  2318. on to say

  2319. once you

  2320. were not

  2321. a people

  2322. but now

  2323. you are

  2324. the people

  2325. of God

  2326. once you

  2327. had not

  2328. received

  2329. mercy

  2330. but now

  2331. you have

  2332. received

  2333. mercy.

  2334. The mercy

  2335. of God

  2336. and the

  2337. love that

  2338. he has shown

  2339. to us

  2340. through Jesus

  2341. Christ.

  2342. What a wonder

  2343. of that love.

  2344. What a power

  2345. there is

  2346. in that love.

  2347. As the hymn writer

  2348. says,

  2349. how deep

  2350. the Father's

  2351. love for us,

  2352. how vast

  2353. beyond all

  2354. measure,

  2355. that he

  2356. should give

  2357. his only

  2358. son to

  2359. make a

  2360. wretch

  2361. his

  2362. treasure.

  2363. Why

  2364. should I

  2365. gain

  2366. from his

  2367. reward?

  2368. I cannot

  2369. give an

  2370. answer,

  2371. but this

  2372. I know

  2373. with all

  2374. my heart,

  2375. his wounds

  2376. have paid

  2377. my ransom.

  2378. How deep

  2379. the Father's

  2380. love.

  2381. And that's

  2382. the love

  2383. that we see

  2384. here in

  2385. verse 15,

  2386. that in the

  2387. midst of their

  2388. disobedience,

  2389. in the midst

  2390. of their

  2391. turning away,

  2392. yet the

  2393. Lord set

  2394. his heart

  2395. and love

  2396. on your

  2397. fathers and

  2398. chose their

  2399. offspring after

  2400. them, you

  2401. above all

  2402. people, as

  2403. you are

  2404. this day.

  2405. As you

  2406. are this

  2407. day, even

  2408. imperfect

  2409. sinners,

  2410. yet the

  2411. Lord has

  2412. shown his

  2413. love to

  2414. you.

  2415. And is

  2416. that not

  2417. how we

  2418. are ourselves

  2419. today?

  2420. Imperfect

  2421. sinners,

  2422. imperfect

  2423. sinners,

  2424. in so

  2425. many ways

  2426. and yet

  2427. reminded of

  2428. the love

  2429. of God

  2430. to us

  2431. in Christ

  2432. Jesus.

  2433. So what

  2434. does this

  2435. mean?

  2436. As Moses

  2437. is telling

  2438. the people

  2439. all of

  2440. these things,

  2441. as he's

  2442. showing them

  2443. this reminder,

  2444. as he's

  2445. telling them

  2446. these requirements,

  2447. what does

  2448. it mean?

  2449. Well, it

  2450. calls for

  2451. a response.

  2452. And that's

  2453. what we

  2454. see in

  2455. verse 16.

  2456. Circumcise,

  2457. therefore,

  2458. the foreskin

  2459. of your

  2460. heart, and

  2461. be no

  2462. longer

  2463. stubborn,

  2464. for the

  2465. Lord your

  2466. God is

  2467. God of

  2468. gods and

  2469. Lord of

  2470. lords, the

  2471. great, the

  2472. mighty, and

  2473. the awesome

  2474. God.

  2475. It calls

  2476. for a

  2477. response.

  2478. As we

  2479. say with

  2480. the covenant

  2481. before us

  2482. here at

  2483. the beginning

  2484. and the

  2485. end, a

  2486. covenant

  2487. agreement is

  2488. between two

  2489. parties, between

  2490. God who has

  2491. shown his

  2492. love there in

  2493. verse 15, who

  2494. has set his

  2495. love on his

  2496. people, his

  2497. steadfast love.

  2498. God has

  2499. pledged that.

  2500. It's an

  2501. unchanging

  2502. love, but it

  2503. calls for a

  2504. response.

  2505. And the

  2506. response is to

  2507. do with the

  2508. heart.

  2509. God has

  2510. to show an

  2511. outward show

  2512. towards God,

  2513. but it's to

  2514. show an

  2515. openness, an

  2516. open heart

  2517. towards him,

  2518. an open

  2519. heart that

  2520. will receive

  2521. the word

  2522. of God.

  2523. Get rid

  2524. of everything

  2525. that keeps

  2526. you from

  2527. loving God.

  2528. Stop being

  2529. like the

  2530. harsh,

  2531. stubborn,

  2532. like we

  2533. were singing

  2534. in the

  2535. psalm there

  2536. in Psalm

    Psalms 32:9

  2537. 32, verse

  2538. 9.

  2539. Then be

  2540. not like the

  2541. horse or

  2542. mule which

  2543. do not

  2544. understand,

  2545. whose mouth

  2546. lest they

  2547. come near to

  2548. thee a

  2549. bridle must

  2550. command.

  2551. There's got

  2552. to be this

  2553. bridle in

  2554. his mouth,

  2555. don't be

  2556. stubborn like

  2557. the horse.

  2558. And it's

  2559. saying here

  2560. as well,

  2561. and be

  2562. no longer

  2563. stubborn.

  2564. What does

  2565. it mean to

  2566. be stubborn?

  2567. I'm sure

  2568. many of us

  2569. could answer

  2570. that quite

  2571. easily.

  2572. We've all

  2573. experienced

  2574. it, either

  2575. by being

  2576. the offender

  2577. or on the

  2578. receiving end

  2579. of it.

  2580. We are

  2581. stubborn by

  2582. nature in

  2583. so many

  2584. ways because

  2585. there's an

  2586. arrogance and

  2587. stubbornness,

  2588. an arrogance

  2589. that you see

  2590. in the people

  2591. of God so

  2592. often here

  2593. in Deuteronomy,

  2594. a stubbornness

  2595. that's led

  2596. them to make

  2597. a golden

  2598. calf, saying

  2599. Moses, he's

  2600. not coming

  2601. back, he's

  2602. gone.

  2603. They didn't

  2604. trust that

  2605. he would

  2606. come back.

  2607. And so

  2608. they took

  2609. matters into

  2610. their own

  2611. hands.

  2612. And that's

  2613. the stubbornness

  2614. that plagues

  2615. our heart to

  2616. this day.

  2617. The stubbornness

  2618. that we know

  2619. best, that we've

  2620. got a plan,

  2621. that we've got

  2622. a way, that

  2623. God doesn't

  2624. know what

  2625. he's doing.

  2626. The stubbornness

  2627. that just puts

  2628. God away, that

  2629. shuns him.

  2630. So there is a

  2631. stubbornness that's

  2632. in us all.

  2633. But the

  2634. response that

  2635. it's calling

  2636. for is

  2637. circumcised

  2638. therefore, the

  2639. foreskin of

  2640. your heart.

  2641. What does he

  2642. mean by that?

  2643. The male

  2644. Israelites, they

  2645. had to be

  2646. circumcised, to

  2647. have their

  2648. foreskin cut

  2649. off.

  2650. It was a

  2651. sign of

  2652. belonging to

  2653. God, but it

  2654. was an outward

  2655. sign.

  2656. But what he's

  2657. asking for here

  2658. is an inward

  2659. sign, that the

  2660. heart is what

  2661. needs changing.

  2662. Not just

  2663. putting on an

  2664. outward show, not

  2665. just putting on a

  2666. show that they're

  2667. to please other

  2668. people around us,

  2669. but that our

  2670. heart, our

  2671. heart is for

  2672. God, that our

  2673. heart is open

  2674. to God.

  2675. Circumcise

  2676. therefore the

  2677. foreskin of your

  2678. heart and be no

  2679. longer stubborn.

  2680. The

  2681. requirements that

  2682. God asks of

  2683. you.

  2684. Don't think you

  2685. know better.

  2686. Don't think you

  2687. can manage your

  2688. life in any

  2689. better way.

  2690. The love that

  2691. God has shown

  2692. for you.

  2693. Don't think you

  2694. can ignore it.

  2695. You ignore it at

  2696. your peril and

  2697. say that that

  2698. love is not

  2699. real or that God

  2700. did not do

  2701. that, that Jesus

  2702. never rose from

  2703. the grave.

  2704. All of these

  2705. things, there's a

  2706. stubbornness.

  2707. God is not

  2708. real.

  2709. Well, God is

  2710. not dead.

  2711. God is

  2712. not

  2713. to be

  2714. open to

  2715. him, not

  2716. to be stubborn

  2717. like the horse

  2718. or the mule,

  2719. because they

  2720. don't understand.

  2721. And it's a fool

  2722. that says in his

  2723. heart that there

  2724. is no God,

  2725. because that

  2726. heart is hard.

  2727. But we are

  2728. not to harden

  2729. our hearts.

  2730. We are not

  2731. to be stubborn.

  2732. We are to

  2733. listen to the

  2734. word of God.

  2735. Thankful that

  2736. he has spoken

  2737. to us, that

  2738. the Lord has

  2739. not destroyed

  2740. us.

2741. As we saw at the

  2742. beginning of this

  2743. section, the

  2744. Lord was unwilling

  2745. to destroy.

  2746. He showed

  2747. mercy.

  2748. He has

  2749. showed mercy to

  2750. you and to me,

  2751. that we hear

  2752. the word

  2753. of God.

  2754. And this

  2755. word that we

  2756. have in

  2757. Deuteronomy,

  2758. it is a

  2759. precious word.

  2760. It is a

  2761. golden nugget

  2762. of God

  2763. to us,

  2764. that the

  2765. Lord requires

  2766. of us

  2767. to do

  2768. these things,

  2769. to see

  2770. his love,

  2771. and to

  2772. respond

  2773. to it

  2774. with an

  2775. open heart,

  2776. to receive

  2777. his grace,

  2778. to trust

  2779. in him,

  2780. to walk

  2781. with him,

  2782. and to

  2783. love him,

  2784. and to

  2785. serve him

  2786. with all

  2787. our heart.

  2788. So be

  2789. not stubborn,

  2790. but open

  2791. your heart

  2792. to the

  2793. Lord,

  2794. that he

  2795. might come

  2796. in and

  2797. dwell.

  2798. May the

  2799. Lord bless

  2800. these thoughts

  2801. to us.

  2802. we'll

  2803. conclude by

  2804. singing to

  2805. God's

  2806. praise in

  2807. Psalm 95,

  2808. in the

  2809. Sing Psalms

  2810. version,

  2811. page 1,

  2812. 2,

  2813. 6,

  2814. Psalm 95,

  2815. the tune

  2816. is

  2817. Cyndenio,

  2818. and we're

  2819. going to

  2820. sing from

  2821. verse 6

  2822. to verse 8,

  2823. these two

  2824. verses.

  2825. Psalm 95,

  2826. page 1,

  2827. 2,

  2828. 6,

  2829. come,

  2830. let us

  2831. bow humbly

  2832. and worship

  2833. the Lord.

  2834. Let us

  2835. kneel before

  2836. him,

  2837. our maker

  2838. in prayer,

  2839. for we

  2840. are his

  2841. people,

  2842. and he

  2843. is our

  2844. God,

  2845. his shepherd,

  2846. and he

  2847. shepherds

  2848. and feeds

  2849. us in

  2850. his loving

  2851. care.

  2852. Today,

  2853. if you

  2854. hear and

  2855. attend to

  2856. his voice,

  2857. don't harden

  2858. your hearts

  2859. as you

  2860. did on

  2861. the way.

  2862. In

  2863. Meribah's

  2864. desert,

  2865. you

  2866. quarreled

  2867. with me,

  2868. you

  2869. tested my

  2870. patience

  2871. at Massa

  2872. that day.

  2873. We'll sing

  2874. these two

  2875. verses to

  2876. God's praise.

  2877. We stand

  2878. to sing.

  2879. Come,

  2880. let us

  2881. bow humbly

  2882. and worship

  2883. the Lord.

  2884. Let us

  2885. kneel

  2886. before him,

  2887. our maker

  2888. in prayer.

  2889. For we

  2890. are his

  2891. people,

  2892. and he

  2893. is our

  2894. God.

  2895. God,

  2896. he shepherds

  2897. and feeds

  2898. us in

  2899. his loving

  2900. care.

  2901. Today,

  2902. if you

  2903. hear and

  2904. attend to

  2905. his voice,

  2906. don't harden

  2907. your hearts

  2908. as you

  2909. did on

  2910. the way.

  2911. in

  2912. Meribah's

  2913. desert,

  2914. you

  2915. quarreled

  2916. with me,

  2917. you

  2918. tested

  2919. my

  2920. patience

  2921. at

  2922. Massa

  2923. that

  2924. day.

  2925. I'm going

  2926. to close

  2927. with a

  2928. benediction,

  2929. and after

  2930. the benediction,

  2931. I'll go to

  2932. the door

  2933. to my

  2934. left.

  2935. Now,

  2936. may grace,

  2937. mercy,

  2938. and peace

  2939. from God,

  2940. Father,

  2941. Son,

  2942. and Holy

  2943. Spirit,

  2944. rest upon

  2945. and abide

  2946. with you

  2947. all now

  2948. and forever

  2949. more.

  2950. Amen.

  2951. Amen.

  2952. Let's
