  1. Dear God, our Father in heaven, we are so, so thankful that we can come together this evening to worship you in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and that we can worship you in the presence of your Holy Spirit.

  2. And as we come to you, our God, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, we pray that you would still our hearts and we pray that we would come in a posture of worship, of joy, of thanksgiving, and of hunger.

  3. Because as we come to you this evening, we come knowing that we need you so, so much.

  4. And so we want to come before you and bow before you.

  5. And as we've been singing, recognizing that you are our maker, our saviour, our God, our King.

  6. And we want to come and bow before you.

  7. We want to lift our hearts and our eyes to you in praise and thanksgiving.

  8. And we want to hear your voice speaking to us through your word.

  9. Because, Father, we need you more than anything else.

  10. And we need you more than we even realize ourselves.

  11. And so we pray that as we come here together, that we would meet with you, that you would bless us, and that we would all be drawn closer to you.

  12. So, Father, we pray that you would help us as we come to you just now.

  13. We're so conscious that we can do nothing on our own.

  14. But we thank you for all the promises that you give us, for your promise to be with us, to help us, to speak to us, to teach us, and to build us up.

  15. And we pray that as we come together this evening, that we would be renewed and refreshed in our faith, that we would be taught and built up in our minds and our understanding,

  16. that we would be strengthened with greater courage and determination to obey you and follow you in our lives.

  17. And we pray that our hearts would just burn with ever deeper love for you and for one another.

  18. So we pray that you would bless us as we gather here this evening.

  19. And we thank you for everybody who is here tonight.

  20. And as we come together, we come with so many different needs and with so many different burdens that we carry.

  21. And we just want to pray, especially for any who are here tonight who have had a really tough week.

  22. We pray for any who are here just feeling tired or anxious or bruised.

  23. We pray for those who are maybe feeling that their faith is hanging by a thread.

  24. We pray for those who feel discouraged.

  25. We pray for those who are anxious about people that they love and who are coming to you this evening with sore hearts and anxious minds.

  26. We pray, Father, that whatever our circumstances, that you would meet with us all.

  27. And we pray that we would hear your voice speaking to us in your word.

  28. We thank you so, so much for the gospel, for the words of eternal life spoken and demonstrated in our Savior Jesus.

  29. And in all that you have woven together across the pages of Scripture as you've accomplished your purposes.

  30. And we just pray that we would hear your voice more tonight.

  31. And that for all of us, you would meet with us and build us up, binding us closer to one another and leading us on so that we can serve you in all of our lives.

  32. And we want to especially pray for anyone here or anyone in our families or in our workplaces or around us where we live who do not yet know you.

  33. We pray, Father, that you would be working in people's hearts.

  34. And we pray that for those who've got no word of you, that you would just press eternity into their hearts and that you'd unsettle them and that you would get their minds questioning and get their hearts seeking so that they would look to you and realize how much they need you.

  35. And we pray for those who are seeking you and for those who maybe know how much they need you but who are struggling to come to any sense of assurance or certainty.

  36. We pray that they would just see the simplicity of the gospel, that they'd hear your voice calling their name tonight and that they would just be able to receive and rest on Jesus Christ for their salvation.

  37. And we pray that for those of us who are following you, we pray that we would be built up and encouraged in our faith as we seek to live out our lives for you.

  38. As we do that, we are conscious, Father, that so often we fail and we come tonight confessing our sin before you.

  39. And we do that with sorrow and with frustration, aware that very often it's not just new sins that we fall into, but often it's the same old ones that we keep slipping back into.

  40. We confess that before you and we come to you tonight in repentance and we want to turn away from sin.

  41. And as a new week begins, we want to go into that week obeying you and following you and listening to your voice speaking to us in your word.

  42. And we thank you so much that as we confess our sin before you, we do so knowing that the promise of the gospel is that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

  43. And how we thank you for that promise.

  44. And may the reality of that cleansing in the gospel just energize us as we seek to serve you in the days ahead in our lives.

  45. We want to pray for anyone who's in particular need in our communities or connected to this congregation.

  46. We pray for those who grieve, asking that you'd comfort and sustain and help them.

  47. We pray for those who are unwell just now.

  48. We pray for those who are under pressure at work or with other responsibilities in their lives.

  49. We pray for those who struggle with addiction, asking that you would help them to turn to you and that you would break the grip of addiction in their lives.

  50. And we pray for any others for whom these may be difficult days.

  51. And we know that for people around the world, these are very difficult days in some areas.

  52. We pray for war-torn regions.

  53. We pray for areas of conflict.

  54. We pray for areas of disease and shortage and famine.

  55. And we just pray for all those, Lord, who are just suffering so much just now.

  56. And we pray for those who are in authority and able to make decisions or that they would make decisions that make for peace and for justice and for healing and for hope.

  57. And more than anything else, we pray that people all across the world would hear the good news of Jesus and turn to him and find the peace that only you can give.

  58. And so we pray that your blessing would be upon each one of us.

  59. Bless this congregation, bless all the work that they are doing and guide them in the days ahead.

  60. That they would just be a beacon of hope and light and joy to Stornoway.

  61. And that you would build them up and that you would immensely bless the work of the gospel here and across our island in all the days that lie ahead.

  62. We pray that in it all, your majestic name would be glorified.

  63. And it's in that name that we pray.

  64. Amen.

  65. Amen.

  66. We're going to sing again, this time from Psalm 119 in the Sing Psalms version on page 159.

  67. So Psalm 119, we're singing the fifth part, verse 33 to 40.

  68. Psalm 119 on page 159.

  69. I love Psalm 119.

  70. It's a psalm that speaks so powerfully of just recognizing the beauty of God's word.

  71. And as we're singing to God's praise in these words, we're also committing ourselves to follow the teaching of God's word.

  72. Praying that it would shape every part of our lives.

  73. And that's one of the amazing things about the Psalms.

  74. They're songs of praise and they're beautiful prayers.

  75. And so we praise and pray to the Lord together as we rise to sing these words.

  76. We'll sing to Rockingham, Psalm 119.

  77. Teach me to follow your decrees.

  78. Amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Amen.

  82. Amen.

  83. Amen.

  84. Amen.

  85. Teach me to follow your decrees.

  86. And I will keep them to the end.

  87. In this I come, I'll keep your love.

  88. With all my heart to it attend.

  89. Lead me in your forgiveness, God.

  90. For there, O Lord, delight I find.

  91. In the Lord, delight I find.

  92. In the Lord, delight I find.

  93. From selfish gain, please stand my mind.

  94. O time, my eyes from worthless things.

  95. Get life according to your word.

  96. To be, O Lord, delight I find.

  97. To be, O Lord, who will be, O Lord.

  98. To be, O Lord, who will be, O Lord.

  99. You look on me, O Lord.

  100. You're lost and self in uprightness.

  101. O Lord, O Lord, who will be, O Lord.

  102. Please send me in your righteousness.

  103. Amen.

  104. Amen.

  105. Amen.

  106. We're going to read God's word together in the Gospel of John and Chapter 11.

  107. John Chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  108. And we'll read from the beginning.

  109. It's on page 108.1 of this Bible, but it might be different in the Bibles that you're using.

  110. John Chapter 11, verses 1 to 44.

    John 11:1–44

  111. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

  112. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother

  113. Lazarus was ill.

  114. So the sister sent to him, saying, Lord, he whom you love is ill.

  115. But when Jesus heard it, he said, this illness does not lead to death.

  116. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  117. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

  118. So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

  119. Then after this, he said to the disciples, let us go to Judea again.

  120. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you.

  121. And are you going there again?

  122. Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day?

  123. If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

  124. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

  125. After saying these things, he said to them, our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I

  126. go to awaken him.

  127. The disciples said to him, Lord, if he's fallen asleep, he will recover.

  128. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought he meant taking rest and sleep.

  129. Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died.

  130. And for your sake, I'm glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.

  131. But let us go to him.

  132. So Thomas called the twin, said to his fellow disciples, let us also go, that we may die

  133. with him.

  134. Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  135. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha

  136. and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

  137. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated

  138. in the house.

  139. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you'd been here, my brother would not have died.

  140. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

  141. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again.

  142. Martha said to him, I know that he'll rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

  143. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

  144. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  145. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  146. Do you believe this?

  147. She said to him, yes, Lord.

  148. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.

  149. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, the teacher

  150. is here and is calling for you.

  151. And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.

  152. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had

  153. met him.

  154. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go

  155. out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

  156. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him,

  157. Lord, if you'd been here, my brother would not have died.

  158. When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply

  159. moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.

  160. And he said, where have you laid him?

  161. They said to him, Lord, come and see.

  162. Jesus wept.

  163. So the Jews said, see how he loved him.

  164. But some of them said, could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this

  165. man from dying?

  166. Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb.

  167. It was a cave and a stone lay against it.

  168. Jesus said, take away the stone.

  169. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, by this time there'll be an odour,

  170. for he's been dead four days.

  171. Jesus said to her, did I not tell you that if you believed you'd see the glory of God?

  172. So they took away the stone and Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that

  173. you've heard me.

  174. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around

  175. that they may believe that you sent me.

  176. When he'd said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out.

  177. The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips and his face

  178. wrapped with the cloth.

  179. Jesus said to them, unbind him and let him go.

  180. Amen.

  181. This is God's word.

  182. May he add his blessing to it.

  183. We're going to sing again together, this time from Psalm 37 on page 252.

  184. So that's in the Scottish Psalter version.

  185. Psalm 37 on page 252, singing from verse 3 to verse 7.

  186. Set thou thy trust upon the Lord and be thou doing good.

  187. And so thou in the land shalt dwell and verily have food.

  188. This little section that we're going to read, verses 3 to 7, has three wonderful commands.

  189. It says, set thou thy trust upon the Lord.

  190. It says in verse 4, delight thyself in the Lord.

  191. It says in verse 7, rest in the Lord.

  192. And these are three wonderful things for us to do as we sing together.

  193. So Psalm 37, verse 3 to 7, stand and sing to the tune Evan.

    Psalms 37:3–7

  194. And so thou in the land shalt dwell and verily have food.

  195. Feel like thyself in what you give.

  196. Thy heart's beside to thee.

  197. Thy way to go, go with him trust.

  198. Good thing God.

  199. For like noontide of the day.

  200. Praise Him, the Lord, and patiently

  201. Wait for Him, do not pray

  202. For Him who prospered in His way

  203. The sustenance in the day.

  204. As we turn to God's Word, let's just pray for a wee moment.

  205. Father, as Your Word is opened before us,

  206. please may we be open before You.

  207. Give us ears that can hear, minds that understand,

  208. and hearts that burn with love for You.

  209. Amen.

  210. I'd like us to turn back to John 11,

  211. and let me read again at verse 25.

  212. Jesus said to her,

  213. I am the resurrection and the life.

  214. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet he shall live.

  215. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  216. Do you believe this?

  217. The Bible is full of amazing promises that God gives to His people

  218. and that God continues to give to us today.

  219. Promises that run right through from Genesis all the way through to Revelation.

  220. And in so many ways, the Gospel rests on these promises of God.

  221. And one of the wonderful privileges that we have when we come to study God's Word together each week

  222. is that we can come and hear these promises from God anew.

  223. We can unpack them.

  224. We can think about them more.

  225. Because life is so often full of broken promises.

  226. So often things don't go the way we want them to go.

  227. So often we are hurt and let down by other people.

  228. So often things turn out the way that we wish they hadn't.

  229. So often life can be difficult.

  230. And in all those difficulties and challenges that life can bring,

  231. the promises of the Gospel are what give us hope and comfort and strength.

  232. And one of the most amazing promises that God gives

  233. is found in these verses that we're going to look at tonight.

  234. So we're going to think a little bit more about the words of John 11, 25 and 26.

  235. And as we do that, we're going to ask four questions.

  236. What does this promise tell us about God?

  237. What does this promise tell us about ourselves?

  238. What is God promising?

  239. And what does God require of us?

  240. So first of all, we're asking the question,

  241. what does this promise tell us about God?

  242. As we read, the context around these verses

  243. is the illness and death of Jesus' friend, Lazarus.

  244. And as we read, Jesus had heard reports that Lazarus was ill.

  245. He had waited a little longer before he travelled to Bethany.

  246. And by the time he arrives there,

  247. Lazarus has died and he's been in the tomb for four days.

  248. As Jesus approaches Bethany,

  249. Martha, one of Lazarus' sisters and a close friend of Jesus,

  250. comes to meet him.

  251. And John records their conversation.

  252. Martha said to Jesus,

  253. Lord, if you'd been here, this is verse 21,

  254. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  255. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God,

  256. God will give you.

  257. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again.

  258. Then Martha said to him,

  259. I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

  260. And it's in response to these words

  261. that Jesus gives the magnificent promise of 11, 25 and 26.

  262. And that, of course, is one of the great I am sayings

  263. that we find in John's gospel.

  264. But what does it teach us about God?

  265. Well, what I want us to think about tonight in this section

  266. is that here we are being reminded of the connection

  267. between God and life.

  268. And so it's so crucial that we maintain that connection.

  269. And if you look at the conversation,

  270. Martha has been confronted by death.

  271. Her brother has died.

  272. And her response to that is to look to Jesus.

  273. And Jesus responds by telling her,

  274. your brother will rise again.

  275. Martha replies by saying, well, yes, that's true.

  276. He's going to rise again on the last day.

  277. And what Martha says is true,

  278. but it's not the whole truth.

  279. Because Martha believes in the resurrection,

  280. but when she thinks of it,

  281. she thinks of the resurrection as a thing

  282. that's going to happen then.

  283. In other words, it's an event that lies in the future.

  284. That's not wrong.

  285. But it's not the whole truth.

  286. Jesus responds to that by saying,

  287. I am the resurrection and the life.

  288. Now, I want to just unpack that statement a little bit more.

  289. First of all, Martha was thinking of resurrection

  290. as a thing that's happening then.

  291. It's an event sometime in the future.

  292. Jesus directs her to himself.

  293. And he says, I am.

  294. And this, as we said,

  295. is one of the seven I am sayings

  296. that we have in John's gospel,

  297. along with I am the light of the world,

  298. I am the way, the truth, and the life, etc.

  299. These are crucial descriptions of Jesus.

  300. And in all of them,

  301. there's a very deliberate link

  302. to the nature and character of God himself.

  303. I love the fact that the two smallest words in the Bible,

  304. I am,

  305. are probably the two most important words in the whole Bible.

  306. Because if you think back to the Old Testament,

  307. particularly when Moses met Jesus,

  308. when God met Moses at the burning bush,

  309. God reveals his name.

  310. And his name is these words,

  311. I am who I am.

  312. And so when Jesus says,

  313. I am,

  314. it's actually a really loaded phrase

  315. because it's making a direct connection to God.

  316. All of this is teaching us

  317. about who Jesus really is

  318. as God the Son.

  319. It's teaching us about God.

  320. And so Jesus says,

  321. I am the resurrection.

  322. And he says,

  323. I am the life.

  324. And these two words,

  325. resurrection and life,

  326. these two words are pointing us

  327. to what we could call,

  328. we could call them meta realities.

  329. Now that's just a fancy way of saying big stuff.

  330. It's making us think about the big stuff,

  331. the big questions,

  332. the big realities of life.

  333. And in many ways,

  334. if you think about it,

  335. the resurrection is pointing us

  336. to the very end of history.

  337. It's pointing us to the last day,

  338. the end point

  339. in the history of the universe.

  340. It's the big moment

  341. that everything is heading towards.

  342. And if you think about the word life,

  343. and if you kind of stretch

  344. what lies behind that word,

  345. we're thinking about the big reality

  346. that makes the universe

  347. more than just existence.

  348. When you look at the universe,

  349. it doesn't just exist.

  350. It's not just a lump of stuff.

  351. The universe contains life.

  352. Earth is not just a bare planet.

  353. It supports life.

  354. And so if you think about it in those terms,

  355. we start to realize that

  356. resurrection is pointing us

  357. to the very last day,

  358. the climax of everything.

  359. Life is actually pointing us back

  360. to the very first day,

  361. thinking about where that came from,

  362. thinking about the source of everything.

  363. And that's why we're saying

  364. that this is talking about meta realities.

  365. We're talking about the source,

  366. where everything has come from,

  367. and the destiny to which everything is going.

  368. And you think to yourself,

  369. okay, that's the big stuff,

  370. the big meta realities.

  371. And we ask the question,

  372. what lies behind those?

  373. And that's a question

  374. that the whole world

  375. has spent centuries trying to answer.

  376. What lies behind everything?

  377. And some people might think,

  378. well, nothing.

  379. And there are many people

  380. who would hold that view today.

  381. Others might think more

  382. in terms of like a force,

  383. maybe a force of physics,

  384. like gravity,

  385. maybe something to do with biology,

  386. like DNA,

  387. maybe more something like fate

  388. or chance

  389. or something like that.

  390. Other people think

  391. that behind those realities

  392. is just a machine

  393. that keeps going round

  394. and round and round in circles,

  395. that life just keeps on going round

  396. and round and round.

  397. Lots of people have different ideas

  398. as to what lies behind

  399. these big meta realities.

  400. The Bible tells us something different.

  401. The Bible tells us

  402. that behind these meta realities

  403. is a person.

  404. And that means

  405. that according to the Bible's worldview,

  406. the absolute

  407. that underlies all reality

  408. is a person.

  409. Now, that person has life.

  410. So he thinks and speaks

  411. and acts and wills and relates.

  412. And that person gives life.

  413. He's the source

  414. from which all other life comes.

  415. And all of this means

  416. that the foundation of life,

  417. the foundation of all meta realities

  418. is not something,

  419. it's someone.

  420. A true, real, living someone.

  421. And that person

  422. is Jesus Christ.

  423. He is the one who lies

  424. behind it all.

  425. If you imagine it

  426. a wee bit like this,

  427. if any of you

  428. like listening to music,

  429. imagine maybe you like

  430. listening to Ed Sheeran

  431. on Spotify.

  432. If anyone's not heard

  433. of Ed Sheeran,

  434. he's just,

  435. he's like a not quite

  436. as good version of Costello.

  437. And you like listening to him.

  438. And you think to yourself,

  439. well, I love listening to him

  440. on my Spotify,

  441. so I'm going to go and see him.

  442. And so you book a concert

  443. in Glasgow at the Ovo

  444. or whatever location it might be.

  445. And you think,

  446. oh, I'm listening to this music.

  447. I've got my tickets.

  448. I'm going to go.

  449. And I'm finally going to get

  450. to see Ed Sheeran.

  451. And if you got there

  452. and all you saw on stage

  453. was a guitar and a stand

  454. and a chair

  455. and a voice recorder,

  456. you'd be thinking,

  457. that's not what I came to see.

  458. And it would make no sense.

  459. The whole thing only works

  460. if Ed Sheeran is there himself.

  461. In other words,

  462. from the first moment

  463. when you've listened

  464. to an Ed Sheeran song

  465. to the day when you finally get

  466. to an Ed Sheeran concert,

  467. behind all of that music

  468. is a person.

  469. And the Bible is saying

  470. that exactly the same

  471. is true of the universe.

  472. Behind it all lies Jesus.

  473. Now, that tells us

  474. two incredibly important things.

  475. It tells us, first of all,

  476. how massive this statement is.

  477. When Jesus says,

  478. I am the resurrection and the life,

  479. he is saying something massive.

  480. He is saying that he

  481. is the foundation of all reality.

  482. He is the end point of all reality.

  483. You cannot have a first day

  484. or a last day without Jesus.

  485. He is the center of all existence.

  486. He is the ultimate meta-reality.

  487. And so we're discovering

  488. how massive this statement

  489. Jesus makes is.

  490. But even more so,

  491. this is showing us,

  492. this whole passage is showing us,

  493. that the someone

  494. who lies behind all existence,

  495. the absolute

  496. from which everything else comes,

  497. is someone

  498. who is utterly lovely.

  499. He's kind

  500. and wise

  501. and patient

  502. and fair

  503. and true

  504. and compassionate.

  505. And this is one of the amazing things

  506. about what the Bible teaches us.

  507. If you peel back the universe

  508. to find its ultimate source,

  509. you find loveliness.

  510. you find all the beauty

  511. and goodness

  512. and grace

  513. of Jesus.

  514. And perhaps most importantly of all,

  515. what you discover

  516. is that this person is a son.

  517. He is a son

  518. who has a father.

  519. This means that he's not solitary,

  520. he's not isolated.

  521. Instead,

  522. he is relational.

  523. From all existence,

  524. he has existed

  525. in this beautiful relationship

  526. between God the Father,

  527. God the Son,

  528. where the love,

  529. the infinite,

  530. eternal love

  531. between them

  532. is carried forth

  533. by the Holy Spirit.

  534. He is loved,

  535. he loves,

  536. he is dependent,

  537. he is dependent upon,

  538. he is precious to his Father,

  539. his Father is precious to him.

  540. All of this is pointing us back

  541. to the Bible's absolute of all reality,

  542. the living God,

  543. the persons of the Father,

  544. the Son,

  545. and the Holy Spirit.

  546. Now,

  547. I hope all that makes sense.

  548. A lot of that's very big stuff

  549. to think about.

  550. I hope that that's not too complicated.

  551. Put simply,

  552. Jesus is telling us

  553. that the absolute

  554. that lies behind reality

  555. is not a dead thing.

  556. It's a living person.

  557. It's him.

  558. And that means

  559. that the norm

  560. for reality

  561. is not deadness.

  562. The norm for reality

  563. is life.

  564. And that's an incredibly important thing

  565. for us to remember.

  566. And I hope we'll see that in a moment.

  567. We need to go on to question two.

  568. What does this promise

  569. tell us

  570. about ourselves?

  571. Well,

  572. the big thing that I want to highlight here

  573. is that

  574. this passage is telling us

  575. that your life is precious.

  576. Now,

  577. you might be thinking,

  578. well,

  579. I know that.

  580. And we all spend a lot of our time

  581. trying to preserve and protect

  582. our lives.

  583. But

  584. what I want us to see

  585. is that your life

  586. actually matters

  587. way,

  588. way more

  589. than we tend

  590. to realize.

  591. we tend to think

  592. that life is precious

  593. because it's short

  594. and fragile.

  595. And that's true

  596. in so many ways.

  597. And we want

  598. to protect ourselves

  599. because

  600. we know that actually

  601. our lives

  602. sometimes

  603. we're confronted

  604. by the fact

  605. that we realize

  606. our lives

  607. are actually

  608. hanging by

  609. not very much

  610. and it's far more fragile

  611. than we sometimes realize.

  612. And so we think

  613. when your life is short,

  614. life goes by

  615. so quickly

  616. and so we think

  617. we need to make

  618. the most of it.

  619. We need to protect it.

  620. Life is precious.

  621. So we tend to think

  622. life is precious.

  623. Be careful with it.

  624. Life is precious.

  625. Make the most of it

  626. because it's short.

  627. God doesn't think like that.

  628. God thinks

  629. in a way

  630. that is far better.

  631. God thinks

  632. life is precious.

  633. Make it last forever.

  634. So when we read

  635. of Lazarus

  636. being ill

  637. when we read

  638. of two sisters

  639. losing their brother

  640. we think

  641. well that's a shame

  642. but it's normal.

  643. And Thomas

  644. sums it up

  645. really well

  646. in verse 16

  647. when he said

  648. to the other disciples

  649. well let's go to Bethany

  650. so that we can die

  651. with them.

  652. Because to Thomas

  653. to the disciples

  654. to all of these people

  655. death just seems

  656. inevitable

  657. and we think

  658. like that as well.

  659. So though we try

  660. to push it away

  661. though we try

  662. to protect ourselves

  663. from it

  664. when it does come

  665. we kind of resign

  666. to it and think

  667. well death is going

  668. to come.

  669. It's inevitable.

  670. We just have

  671. to accept it.

  672. Jesus does not

  673. think like that.

  674. Jesus does not

  675. think like that.

  676. Because from

  677. Jesus' perspective

  678. death is not normal.

  679. Death is not

  680. inevitable.

  681. Death is not

  682. acceptable.

  683. death is

  684. fundamentally wrong.

  685. And that's brought

  686. out very very

  687. powerfully in this

  688. passage but we

  689. don't actually see

  690. it very clearly

  691. in the English

  692. translation that

  693. we have before us.

  694. So if you look

  695. at verse 33

  696. of John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  697. it says that

  698. when Jesus saw

  699. her weeping

  700. and the Jews

  701. who had come

  702. with her also

  703. weeping

  704. he was deeply

  705. moved in his

  706. spirit

  707. and greatly

  708. troubled.

  709. And so when you

  710. read that verse

  711. you tend to think

  712. of Jesus

  713. sees Mary

  714. coming and

  715. sees her weeping

  716. sees the Jews

  717. with her also

  718. weeping

  719. and you see

  720. his heart

  721. I don't know

  722. how you describe it

  723. but you see him

  724. feeling sorrowful

  725. and moved

  726. and sympathetic

  727. and sad

  728. to see them

  729. suffering.

  730. but deeply

  731. moved isn't

  732. really what the

  733. word in Greek

  734. means.

  735. The word in

  736. Greek that

  737. describes how

  738. Jesus felt

  739. in this moment

  740. actually means

  741. outraged.

  742. It's a word

  743. that means

  744. angry

  745. means very

  746. angry.

  747. Jesus is

  748. outraged

  749. at what he

  750. sees

  751. and that's

  752. so important

  753. for us to

  754. recognize

  755. because to

  756. Jesus

  757. the illness

  758. and the

  759. death of

  760. this man

  761. was wrong

  762. and the

  763. pain

  764. that these

  765. sisters

  766. felt

  767. was wrong

  768. and the

  769. agony

  770. of separation

  771. that many

  772. of you

  773. have experienced

  774. is wrong

  775. because to

  776. Jesus

  777. death is not

  778. just this

  779. inevitable part

  780. of life

  781. that we hate

  782. that we have

  783. to accept

  784. to Jesus

  785. death is

  786. an utter

  787. outrage

  788. and if you

  789. think about it

  790. no wonder

  791. it's an outrage

  792. because he is

  793. the source

  794. of life

  795. he is the

  796. one from

  797. whom

  798. life has

  799. come

  800. and here

  801. it's as though

  802. Jesus is

  803. standing

  804. before the

  805. tomb of

  806. his friend

  807. and his

  808. arch enemy

  809. is mocking

  810. him

  811. as though

  812. to say

  813. look at

  814. this

  815. you didn't

  816. get it

  817. in time

  818. look at

  819. this

  820. your friend's

  821. gone

  822. look at

  823. this

  824. there's

  825. another one

  826. in the

  827. tomb

  828. and there's

  829. many many

  830. more

  831. coming

  832. look at

  833. all these

  834. precious

  835. people dying

  836. Lazarus

  837. is just

  838. one of

  839. the many

  840. many lives

  841. that you

  842. can't

  843. save

  844. no wonder

  845. Jesus was

  846. outraged

  847. and no

  848. wonder

  849. he says

  850. take that

  851. stone away

  852. and no

  853. wonder

  854. he says

  855. Lazarus

  856. come out

  857. and in

  858. doing that

  859. Jesus is

  860. giving us

  861. a glimpse

  862. of what

  863. his mission

  864. is all

  865. about

  866. he has

  867. come

  868. to give

  869. life

  870. he has

  871. come

  872. to defeat

  873. death

  874. and all

  875. of that

  876. tells you

  877. that your

  878. life matters

  879. and I want

  880. you to

  881. recognize that

  882. whether you

  883. are young

  884. and hoping

  885. for a lot

  886. of life

  887. ahead of you

  888. whether you're

  889. in the middle

  890. like me

  891. and you're

  892. like well

  893. I don't

  894. know if

  895. I've got

  896. as much

  897. ahead of

  898. me

  899. as I do

  900. behind me

  901. or whether

  902. you're

  903. further on

  904. and you're

  905. absolutely

  906. aware

  907. that

  908. most of

  909. your life

  910. story lies

  911. behind you

  912. I want you

  913. all to

  914. recognize that

  915. your life

  916. matters

  917. and so

  918. if you are

  919. ill

  920. and your

  921. body is

  922. suffering

  923. because of

  924. the fact

  925. that sin

  926. has left

  927. us decaying

  928. if you are

  929. hurt

  930. where life

  931. has bruised

  932. you and

  933. battered you

  934. and knocked

  935. you

  936. and if

  937. you are

  938. confronted

  939. with death

  940. either the

  941. fear of

  942. death

  943. yourself

  944. or the

  945. agony of

  946. death

  947. in losing

  948. somebody

  949. you love

  950. I want

  951. you to

  952. realize

  953. that the

  954. absolute

  955. of the

  956. universe

  957. is

  958. outraged

  959. and why

  960. is he

  961. outraged

  962. because

  963. your life

  964. is precious

  965. because

  966. you

  967. matter

  968. to him

  969. so

  970. what is

  971. God

  972. promising

  973. that's

  974. our

  975. third

  976. question

  977. go back

  978. to verse

  979. 25

  980. Jesus said

  981. to her

  982. I am

  983. the

  984. resurrection

  985. and the

  986. life

  987. whoever

  988. believes

  989. in me

  990. though

  991. he die

  992. yet he

  993. shall

  994. live

  995. and

  996. everyone

  997. who

  998. lives

  999. and

  1000. believes

  1001. in me

  1002. shall

  1003. never

  1004. die

  1005. do

  1006. you

  1007. believe

  1008. this

  1009. as

  1010. we

  1011. said

  1012. a

  1013. minute

  1014. ago

  1015. in

  1016. this

  1017. passage

  1018. and

  1019. for

  1020. all

  1021. of

  1022. us

  1023. in

  1024. our

  1025. experience

  1026. there's

  1027. just

  1028. a

  1029. kind

  1030. of

  1031. inevitability

  1032. about

  1033. death

  1034. you see

  1035. it

  1036. in

  1037. Thomas

  1038. you see

  1039. it

  1040. in

  1041. Martha

  1042. and

  1043. Mary

  1044. and

  1045. they

  1046. kind

  1047. of

  1048. come

  1049. saying

  1050. if

  1051. only

  1052. you'd

  1053. been

  1054. here

  1055. as if

  1056. to say

  1057. well

  1058. obviously

  1059. otherwise

  1060. it's

  1061. just

  1062. completely

  1063. inevitable

  1064. and we

  1065. all face

  1066. the same

  1067. reality

  1068. so no

  1069. matter

  1070. what

  1071. our

  1072. lives

  1073. are

  1074. the

  1075. final

  1076. clause

  1077. in our

  1078. life

  1079. story

  1080. is

  1081. always

  1082. going

  1083. to

  1084. be

  1085. yet

  1086. he

  1087. will

  1088. die

  1089. yet

  1090. she

  1091. will

  1092. die

  1093. and

  1094. so

  1095. you

  1096. might

  1097. get

  1098. a

  1099. brilliant

  1100. job

  1101. and

  1102. you

  1103. might

  1104. have

  1105. a

  1106. really

  1107. successful

  1108. career

  1109. and

  1110. everything

  1111. might

  1112. go

  1113. every

  1114. way

  1115. you

  1116. dreamt

  1117. of

  1118. in

  1119. terms

  1120. of

  1121. what

  1122. you

  1123. achieve

  1124. in

  1125. your

  1126. work

  1127. yet

  1128. you'll

  1129. die

  1130. you

  1131. might

  1132. be

  1133. able

  1134. to

  1135. build

  1136. the

  1137. house

  1138. of

  1139. your

  1140. dreams

  1141. and

  1142. you

  1143. think

  1144. everything

  1145. that

  1146. you

  1147. dreamed

  1148. of

  1149. and

  1150. you

  1151. build

  1152. the

  1153. house

  1154. and

  1155. it's

  1156. there

  1157. and

  1158. you

  1159. make

  1160. a

  1161. nice

  1162. garden

  1163. and

  1164. it's

  1165. just

  1166. everything

  1167. that

  1168. you

  1169. wanted

  1170. it

  1171. to

  1172. be

  1173. yet

  1174. you'll

  1175. die

  1176. and

  1177. you

  1178. might

  1179. think

  1180. well I

  1181. really

  1182. want

  1183. to

  1184. make

  1185. a

  1186. name

  1187. for

  1188. myself

  1189. and

  1190. many

  1191. people

  1192. have

  1193. made

  1194. a

  1195. massive

  1196. name

  1197. for

  1198. themselves

  1199. and

  1200. even

  1201. the

  1202. people

  1203. who

  1204. are

  1205. the

  1206. most

  1207. famous

  1208. in

  1209. the

  1210. world

  1211. have

  1212. the

  1213. same

  1214. final

  1215. clause

  1216. in

  1217. their

  1218. life

  1219. story

  1220. yet

  1221. she'll

  1222. die

  1223. yet

  1224. he

  1225. will

  1226. die

  1227. it's

  1228. inevitable

  1229. and

  1230. all

  1231. the

  1232. other

  1233. stuff

  1234. just

  1235. kind

  1236. of

  1237. shrinks

  1238. in

  1239. terms

  1240. of

  1241. its

  1242. significance

  1243. the

  1244. house

  1245. the

  1246. job

  1247. the

  1248. success

  1249. the

  1250. fame

  1251. the

  1252. whatever

  1253. because

  1254. our

  1255. death

  1256. is

  1257. inevitable

  1258. and

  1259. it

  1260. takes

  1261. all

  1262. of

  1263. that

  1264. away

  1265. and

  1266. the

  1267. key

  1268. point

  1269. I

  1270. want

  1271. you

  1272. to

  1273. see

  1274. in

  1275. these

  1276. verses

  1277. is

  1278. that

  1279. Jesus

  1280. is

  1281. promising

  1282. us

  1283. a

  1284. new

  1285. inevitable

  1286. Jesus

  1287. is

  1288. promising

  1289. a

  1290. new

  1291. inevitable

  1292. so

  1293. if

  1294. you

  1295. look

  1296. at

  1297. verse

  1298. 25

  1299. you

  1300. can

  1301. see

  1302. that

  1303. the

  1304. clause

  1305. where

  1306. it

  1307. says

  1308. though

  1309. he

  1310. die

  1311. so

  1312. you

  1313. see

  1314. it

  1315. just

  1316. towards

  1317. the

  1318. end

  1319. Jesus

  1320. said

  1321. though

  1322. he

  1323. die

  1324. I

  1325. was

  1326. useless

  1327. at

  1328. English

  1329. in

  1330. school

  1331. so

  1332. I

  1333. don't

  1334. really

  1335. know

  1336. the

  1337. grammatical

  1338. term

  1339. for

  1340. this

  1341. but

  1342. basically

  1343. those

  1344. three

  1345. words

  1346. have

  1347. what we

  1348. could

  1349. call

  1350. it

  1351. actually

  1352. doesn't

  1353. matter

  1354. statement

  1355. because

  1356. that's

  1357. what's

  1358. being

  1359. conveyed

  1360. here

  1361. the

  1362. fact

  1363. that

  1364. those

  1365. three

  1366. words

  1367. actually

  1368. don't

  1369. matter

  1370. they're

  1371. not

  1372. the

  1373. final

  1374. story

  1375. those

  1376. words

  1377. don't

  1378. have

  1379. the

  1380. final

  1381. say

  1382. what

  1383. has

  1384. the

  1385. final

  1386. say

  1387. is

  1388. the

  1389. words

  1390. that

  1391. come

  1392. after

  1393. in

  1394. other

  1395. words

  1396. the

  1397. though

  1398. she

  1399. may

  1400. die

  1401. though

  1402. he

  1403. may

  1404. die

  1405. but

  1406. in

  1407. the

  1408. sentence

  1409. is

  1410. not

  1411. the

  1412. inevitable

  1413. but

  1414. there's

  1415. a

  1416. new

  1417. inevitable

  1418. the

  1419. new

  1420. inevitable

  1421. is

  1422. that

  1423. we

  1424. shall

  1425. live

  1426. and

  1427. there

  1428. is

  1429. no

  1430. comeback

  1431. on

  1432. that

  1433. everyone

  1434. who

  1435. believes

  1436. in

  1437. Jesus

  1438. shall

  1439. live

  1440. and

  1441. that

  1442. means

  1443. that

  1444. for

  1445. everyone

  1446. if

  1447. you

  1448. put

  1449. your

  1450. trust

  1451. in

  1452. Jesus

  1453. if

  1454. you

  1455. are

  1456. a

  1457. Christian

  1458. or

  1459. if

  1460. you

  1461. become

  1462. a

  1463. Christian

  1464. the

  1465. final

  1466. word

  1467. for

  1468. you

  1469. is

  1470. not

  1471. yet

  1472. you

  1473. will

  1474. die

  1475. the

  1476. final

  1477. word

  1478. for

  1479. you

  1480. is

  1481. yet

  1482. you

  1483. will

  1484. live

  1485. yet

  1486. you

  1487. will

  1488. live

  1489. forever

  1490. with

  1491. Jesus

  1492. so

  1493. you

  1494. might

  1495. have

  1496. an

  1497. absolutely

  1498. awful

  1499. week

  1500. this

  1501. week

  1502. yet

  1503. you

  1504. will

  1505. live

  1506. you

  1507. might

  1508. get a

  1509. terrible

  1510. diagnosis

  1511. this

  1512. year

  1513. and

  1514. maybe

  1515. some

  1516. of

  1517. you

  1518. are

  1519. living

  1520. with

  1521. those

  1522. diagnoses

  1523. yet

  1524. you

  1525. will

  1526. live

  1527. you

  1528. might

  1529. not

  1530. get

  1531. the

  1532. job

  1533. or the

  1534. house

  1535. or the

  1536. marriage

  1537. that you

  1538. dreamed

  1539. of

  1540. yet

  1541. you

  1542. will

  1543. live

  1544. you

  1545. might

  1546. have

  1547. your

  1548. heart

  1549. broken

  1550. many

  1551. many

  1552. times

  1553. in this

  1554. life

  1555. yet

  1556. you

  1557. will

  1558. live

  1559. that's

  1560. the new

  1561. inevitable

  1562. that the

  1563. gospel

  1564. promises

  1565. and it

  1566. all

  1567. makes

  1568. perfect

  1569. sense

  1570. because

  1571. the

  1572. reason

  1573. your

  1574. new

  1575. inevitable

  1576. as a

  1577. person

  1578. can be

  1579. life

  1580. is because

  1581. the

  1582. absolute

  1583. of the

  1584. universe

  1585. is a

  1586. living

  1587. person

  1588. who

  1589. gives

  1590. life

  1591. and

  1592. that's

  1593. so

  1594. so

  1595. crucial

  1596. for us

  1597. to

  1598. recognize

  1599. this is

  1600. how we

  1601. need

  1602. to

  1603. understand

  1604. reality

  1605. and

  1606. this

  1607. is

  1608. where

  1609. what

  1610. the

  1611. bible

  1612. teaches

  1613. and

  1614. what

  1615. everybody

  1616. around

  1617. us

  1618. thinks

  1619. are

  1620. completely

  1621. opposite

  1622. because

  1623. the

  1624. world

  1625. tends

  1626. to

  1627. view

  1628. reality

  1629. a little

  1630. bit

  1631. like

  1632. this

  1633. I

  1634. don't

  1635. nothing

  1636. nothing

  1637. nothing

  1638. nothing

  1639. nothing

  1640. nothing

  1641. and then

  1642. there's

  1643. this

  1644. wee blip

  1645. of life

  1646. for a

  1647. few

  1648. billion

  1649. years

  1650. where

  1651. the

  1652. universe

  1653. comes

  1654. into

  1655. existence

  1656. and

  1657. there's

  1658. life

  1659. and

  1660. everything

  1661. and

  1662. all

  1663. that

  1664. stuff

  1665. and

  1666. slowly

  1667. it

  1668. all

  1669. starts

  1670. to

  1671. burn

  1672. up

  1673. and

  1674. disappear

  1675. until

  1676. the

  1677. end

  1678. it

  1679. all

  1680. collapses

  1681. and

  1682. we

  1683. go

  1684. back

  1685. to

  1686. deadness

  1687. so

  1688. it's

  1689. a

  1690. little

  1691. bit

  1692. like

  1693. you

  1694. start

  1695. with

  1696. death

  1697. there's

  1698. start

  1699. with

  1700. deadness

  1701. there's

  1702. this

  1703. this

  1704. anomaly

  1705. in the

  1706. middle

  1707. called

  1708. life

  1709. and

  1710. then

  1711. there's

  1712. a

  1713. death

  1714. erection

  1715. at

  1716. the

  1717. end

  1718. but

  1719. everything

  1720. just

  1721. becomes

  1722. dead

  1723. again

  1724. and

  1725. that's

  1726. actually

  1727. how most

  1728. people would

  1729. view reality

  1730. in Britain

  1731. today

  1732. the Bible

  1733. says

  1734. the opposite

  1735. the exact

  1736. opposite

  1737. in the Bible's

  1738. worldview

  1739. the norm

  1740. is life

  1741. life is

  1742. what everything

  1743. came from

  1744. the life

  1745. of the living

  1746. God

  1747. father son

  1748. and holy

  1749. spirit

  1750. the anomaly

  1751. in the middle

  1752. is death

  1753. that's the

  1754. intrusion

  1755. sin has

  1756. brought in

  1757. something

  1758. that was

  1759. never meant

  1760. to be

  1761. there

  1762. something

  1763. that has

  1764. ruined

  1765. what God

  1766. has

  1767. created

  1768. and

  1769. that's

  1770. why

  1771. it's

  1772. all going

  1773. to end

  1774. with a

  1775. resurrection

  1776. everybody

  1777. restored

  1778. to life

  1779. everyone

  1780. appearing

  1781. before the

  1782. judgment

  1783. seat

  1784. of the

  1785. living

  1786. God

  1787. and the

  1788. whole

  1789. point

  1790. of Jesus

  1791. mission

  1792. is to

  1793. break

  1794. the power

  1795. of death

  1796. to undo

  1797. that anomaly

  1798. to put

  1799. right the

  1800. wrong

  1801. and to

  1802. give

  1803. you

  1804. life

  1805. and at the

  1806. heart of that

  1807. life is two

  1808. things that we

  1809. see in this

  1810. chapter

  1811. there's

  1812. individual

  1813. preciousness

  1814. and precious

  1815. togetherness

  1816. individual

  1817. preciousness

  1818. and precious

  1819. togetherness

  1820. so Jesus

  1821. restores

  1822. your life

  1823. for everyone

  1824. here who's a

  1825. Christian

  1826. for everyone

  1827. who becomes a

  1828. Christian

  1829. Jesus

  1830. restores

  1831. your life

  1832. because you

  1833. as an

  1834. individual

  1835. are precious

  1836. and so he

  1837. died to take

  1838. your sin

  1839. he died in

  1840. your place

  1841. and you are

  1842. united to him

  1843. in the power

  1844. of his

  1845. resurrection

  1846. because you

  1847. as an

  1848. individual

  1849. are precious

  1850. but Jesus

  1851. also restores

  1852. your life

  1853. so that other

  1854. people can enjoy

  1855. your company

  1856. and so that you

  1857. can enjoy theirs

  1858. so that there's

  1859. this beautiful

  1860. togetherness

  1861. in the new

  1862. humanity

  1863. that Jesus

  1864. is restoring

  1865. through his

  1866. death and

  1867. resurrection

  1868. and you see

  1869. this so

  1870. clearly

  1871. in Lazarus

  1872. Jesus

  1873. wept at

  1874. the grave

  1875. of this

  1876. individual

  1877. this dear

  1878. friend

  1879. who Jesus

  1880. knew and

  1881. loved

  1882. Lazarus

  1883. the individual

  1884. mattered

  1885. to Jesus

  1886. and you

  1887. as an

  1888. individual

  1889. matter to

  1890. him as

  1891. well

  1892. but the

  1893. amazing

  1894. thing

  1895. about

  1896. Lazarus

  1897. is that

  1898. you never

  1899. hear him

  1900. talk

  1901. when you

  1902. look at

  1903. all

  1904. he's like a

  1905. key figure

  1906. in the

  1907. gospel

  1908. but you

  1909. never

  1910. hear him

  1911. talk

  1912. instead

  1913. he's

  1914. always

  1915. described

  1916. in terms

  1917. of his

  1918. relationship

  1919. with other

  1920. people

  1921. so he's

  1922. described

  1923. as a

  1924. friend

  1925. as a

  1926. brother

  1927. and in

  1928. chapter 11

  1929. his death

  1930. is mourned

  1931. but in

  1932. chapter 12

  1933. you find

  1934. Lazarus

  1935. again

  1936. and he's

  1937. having a

  1938. meal

  1939. with his

  1940. friends

  1941. everyone

  1942. is enjoying

  1943. being

  1944. together

  1945. and so

  1946. Jesus

  1947. promises

  1948. you

  1949. life

  1950. because

  1951. you

  1952. are

  1953. precious

  1954. to him

  1955. and because

  1956. you are

  1957. precious

  1958. to others

  1959. that there's

  1960. this collective

  1961. preciousness

  1962. this beautiful

  1963. togetherness

  1964. that lies

  1965. at the heart

  1966. of the gospel

  1967. and the result

  1968. is that for all

  1969. of us who

  1970. trust in Jesus

  1971. we can enjoy

  1972. this amazing

  1973. togetherness

  1974. and I think

  1975. that the meal

  1976. that Lazarus

  1977. shares

  1978. is a glimpse

  1979. of this

  1980. I think it's a

  1981. beautiful picture

  1982. that Lazarus

  1983. has died

  1984. Lazarus

  1985. is restored

  1986. to life

  1987. through Jesus

  1988. the very next

  1989. thing we see

  1990. him doing

  1991. is having a

  1992. meal with his

  1993. friends

  1994. with his

  1995. fellow believers

  1996. and I think

  1997. that that's

  1998. a beautiful

  1999. picture of how

  2000. the gospel

  2001. works because

  2002. you as an

  2003. individual are

  2004. saved and

  2005. then you're

  2006. brought into

  2007. this beautiful

  2008. family called

  2009. the church

  2010. where precious

  2011. individuals enjoy

  2012. beautiful

  2013. togetherness

  2014. side by

  2015. side

  2016. and it's

  2017. all reminding

  2018. us that the

  2019. new life

  2020. that the gospel

  2021. gives starts

  2022. now and the

  2023. church is always

  2024. meant to be a

  2025. glimpse that the

  2026. world can see of

  2027. all the beauty

  2028. and joy and

  2029. goodness of the

  2030. life to come in

  2031. the new creation

  2032. and that's why

  2033. as we come to

  2034. faith in Jesus

  2035. we leave sin

  2036. and deadness

  2037. behind and

  2038. again you see

  2039. that reality in

  2040. Lazarus because

  2041. when Jesus calls

  2042. him out of the

  2043. grave Lazarus

  2044. comes out and

  2045. his hands and

  2046. feet are bound

  2047. with linen

  2048. strips his face

  2049. is wrapped with

  2050. a cloth Jesus

  2051. said to them

  2052. unbind him and

  2053. let him go and

  2054. I think that

  2055. there's an

  2056. incredibly important

  2057. truth conveyed in

  2058. those words unbind

  2059. him and let him

  2060. go we come to

  2061. faith in Jesus

  2062. and sin still

  2063. kind of has its

  2064. grip on us we're

  2065. still wrapped with

  2066. all the mess of

  2067. our mistakes and

  2068. all the kind of

  2069. bad choices that

  2070. we make and all

  2071. the attraction that

  2072. we have towards

  2073. sin and all the

  2074. attitudes that

  2075. have been just

  2076. cultivated in a

  2077. life that's not

  2078. centered on Jesus

  2079. and then as we

  2080. come to faith in

  2081. Jesus and turn to

  2082. him and follow him

  2083. Jesus is saying

  2084. get all that off

  2085. you

  2086. unbind him

  2087. let him go

  2088. live in the

  2089. freedom of the

  2090. gospel in other

  2091. words live life

  2092. have the life

  2093. that I created you

  2094. to have

  2095. love and that's

  2096. why there is such

  2097. an amazing change

  2098. now for everybody

  2099. who comes to

  2100. faith in Jesus

  2101. but ultimately it

  2102. will be fully

  2103. enjoyed then at

  2104. the resurrection

  2105. when we will be

  2106. brought into the

  2107. new creation and

  2108. when you look at

  2109. the Bible's

  2110. descriptions of

  2111. that new creation

  2112. the descriptions

  2113. picture just

  2114. beautiful togetherness

  2115. of God's people

  2116. enjoying life you've

  2117. got imagery of a

  2118. heavenly banquet

  2119. you've got imagery

  2120. of a marriage

  2121. supper of the

  2122. lamb nobody has a

  2123. banquet on their

  2124. own nobody has a

  2125. marriage on their

  2126. own it's all about

  2127. togetherness Jesus

  2128. reclaiming us from

  2129. the kingdom of

  2130. darkness restoring us

  2131. to life and bringing

  2132. us into his kingdom

  2133. where we can enjoy

  2134. the fullness of his

  2135. life together oh God

2136. is promising us so so

  2137. much and you think

2138. of every single way in

  2139. which life is rubbish

2140. just now every way in

  2141. which friendships are

  2142. broken families are

  2143. torn apart every time

  2144. we're hurt by other

  2145. people every time we

  2146. feel lonely every time

  2147. we feel isolated every

  2148. bruise that's hit our

  2149. heart then it's going

2150. to be none of that

  2151. ever again instead we

  2152. will be together every

  2153. single believer will be

  2154. together with Jesus and

2155. we will see the most

  2156. beautiful version of one

2157. another as the power of

2158. sin is broken forever and

  2159. the grave clothes are

  2160. fully unbound and fully

  2161. left behind and together

  2162. we will reflect the

  2163. beauty and glory of

  2164. Jesus together in his

  2165. kingdom what is God

  2166. promising us he is

  2167. promising us an amazing

2168. life that begins now and

  2169. that will last forever

2170. last question what does God

2171. require of you for all of

2172. that well the answers in

2173. our verses he wants you to

2174. believe in him everyone who

2175. lives and believes in me shall

2176. never die and the key point

2177. here is that that Jesus is not

2178. asking us to believe things

2179. he's not asking us to believe

2180. information he's not asking us

2181. to believe even in a

2182. particular world view we're not

2183. being asked to believe in things

  2184. we're being asked to believe a

2185. person he's asking us to believe

2186. him and that's where it all comes

2187. together perfectly the absolute of

2188. the universe is a person Jesus and

2189. all that's required of us is to

2190. believe in him to trust him and

2191. it's reminding us that the whole

2192. gospel is to be understood in

2193. terms of a relationship no wonder

2194. because the absolute of reality is

2195. the triune God in an eternal

  2196. perfect beautiful relationship and

2197. at the heart of any relationship is

  2198. trust

2199. and you know that's true in any

2200. family in any work relationship with

2201. friends in any way in a church for a

2202. relationship to function there's got

2203. to be trust and when trust isn't

2204. there you either have enmity where

2205. people fall out or you have

2206. manipulation where somebody might be

  2207. trusting somebody but they're

2208. actually not trustworthy and they're

2209. not doing or being what they said

2210. that they would be a true healthy

  2211. relationship involves trust and

  2212. that's why being a Christian doesn't

2213. mean bargaining with Jesus it doesn't

2214. mean you think you know well okay I

2215. well Jesus if you do this maybe for me

2216. then I will follow you that's not the

2217. basis for the gospel nor does being a

2218. Christian mean impressing Jesus it's

2219. not saying well Jesus look I I think

2220. I can do this I'll try I'll make sure

2221. I don't make that mistake again and

2222. I'll keep it as good as I can be

2223. that's not the gospel and it doesn't

2224. mean using Jesus where we think well

2225. oh yes Jesus I'm in a crisis right

2226. now can you help me and then we go

2227. through the rest of our lives as though

2228. he's not there at all that is not

2229. what the gospel involves the gospel

2230. involves trusting him and that's all

2231. it involves we trust him and follow

2232. him so often we make make two mistakes

2233. when we approach the gospel and we do

2234. this as Christians and we do this as

2235. non-Christians so often we play down or

2236. minimize what we think Jesus will do for

2237. us and we amplify what we must do for

2238. him so we kind of we kind of minimize

2239. what we think Jesus will do for us so

2240. we sometimes think well Jesus is

2241. important but he's probably going to

2242. spoil my life and maybe you know I know

2243. that my sins need to be forgiven but I

2244. kind of don't really want to surrender

  2245. my independence and he'll maybe he'll

2246. maybe kind of get in the way of my life

2247. a wee bit or we might think well yes

2248. Jesus he'll give me the ticket to

2249. heaven that I know I'm going to need

2250. when I die but just now I'd kind of

2251. quite like to just keep him to one

2252. side in my life because we kind of

2253. think that you know what Jesus is

2254. probably going to just interfere with

2255. my life or spoil it or do something to

2256. me that I don't want him to do so we

2257. kind of play down what we think Jesus

2258. will do for us and at the very same

2259. time we amplify what we need to do for

2260. him so we think well okay I need to

2261. learn more I need to understand more

2262. I need to be better at attending

2263. church I need to become more diligent

2264. in my my my my personal study time and

2265. devotions I need to make sure that I

2266. don't make these mistakes and I need

2267. to kind of actually just get my life

2268. in order and then I'll be able to

2269. follow Jesus so we have these two

2270. views where we kind of minimize what

2271. Jesus has done or we reduce it we

2272. kind of amplify what we have to do

2273. both of them are completely wrong

2274. the gospel is the opposite

2275. what Jesus will do for you is beyond

2276. anything that I can describe

2277. Jesus's love for you is deeper and

2278. stronger than anything that I can

2279. convey and Jesus's promises for you are

2280. bigger and better than anything that I

2281. could set before you with my words

2282. tonight and what Jesus will promise

2283. what Jesus is promising us in the

2284. future when we we will step into the

2285. new creation and we will be there for

2286. one second and we will think wow this

2287. is beyond anything that I imagined and

2288. so what Jesus will really do for you is

2289. just way way way bigger than what we

2290. imagine and what Jesus requires of you in

2291. in comparison to that is never bigger

  2292. than one word

  2293. believe

2294. you don't need to add any extra

  2295. requirements to that

2296. you don't need to bring any impressive

  2297. knowledge

2298. you don't need to you don't need to know

2299. this that and the next thing

2300. all you need to do

  2301. is believe in him

2302. and that's what makes the gospel so

2303. amazing that's the astounding truth of

2304. the gospel Jesus is saying I am the

2305. resurrection and the life I am the

2306. absolute of the universe I am the

2307. source of all life I am the beginning

2308. and the end you are precious to me your

2309. life matters I've come to save you from

2310. death I am outraged by the fact that

2311. death is threatening you I have come to

2312. save you in fact I have come to die

  2313. instead of you

2314. and though you may suffer and though you

2315. may get ill and though you will die

2316. physically yet you will never die because

2317. I'll never forget you and I will delight

2318. over you and I will delight in you being

2319. with me for all eternity along with all

2320. your brothers and sisters that is the

2321. promise of the gospel that is what

2322. Jesus wants and Jesus is saying for all

2323. of that to happen for you to receive all

2324. these promises I will do everything I'll

2325. do absolutely everything you don't have

2326. to do anything just trust me and that's

2327. when we see that the question at the end of

2328. verse 26 becomes the most important

  2329. question you'll ever ask

  2330. do you believe this

  2331. amen let's pray

2332. Lord Jesus we just thank you so much for who you

2333. are you are the resurrection and the life and

2334. thank you for everything that you've done

2335. for us and help us all just to live out this

2336. week and every week of our lives and with our

2337. minds and our attitudes and our whole lives

2338. shaped by the gospel by the reality of who you

2339. are and of everything that you've done and if

2340. there's anyone here who's maybe not yet come to

2341. faith or not sure I'll help them just to hear that

2342. beautifully simple command to believe

  2343. amen

2344. we're going to conclude with I think the greatest

2345. resurrection song that was ever written

2346. psalm 16 and we're going to sing the sing psalms

  2347. version on page 17

  2348. and we're singing from verse 7

2349. I'll praise the Lord my God whose counsel guides my

2350. choice and even in the night my heart recalls

2351. instructions voice this is and the words we're going

2352. to sing are quoted in the New Testament all

2353. directly referencing the resurrection of Jesus

2354. Jesus and we can sing with joy down to the words of

2355. eleven you have made known to me the path of life

2356. divine bliss shall I know at your right hand joy from

2357. your face will shine we'll sing to the tune Golden Hill

  2358. and we'll stand together

  2359. amen

2360. I'll praise the Lord my God whose counsel guides my

2361. choice and even in the night my heart recalls my

2362. heart recalls my instructions voice before me constantly I

2363. said the Lord alone before me constantly I said the Lord alone he

2364. voice and I'll king the bell the Lordden home my heart

2365. clearly knows his favorite the man who died by 신

2366. a lot of choices and and and for the more mie

2367. heard the Lord soisten to the Lord through me Fed can however he

2368. heard my heart tell them life

  2369. With glory we'll sing

  2370. My holy tomb

  2371. Will be secure

  2372. In war of me

  2373. For you will

  2374. What I love

  2375. My soul

  2376. In death to stay

  2377. How will you

  2378. In your holy heart

  2379. To see

  2380. Aogenic day

  2381. You are

  2382. I know that you I can

2383. For in hope your face will shine

2384. As you go into a new week together

2385. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

  2386. The love of God

2387. And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

  2388. Be with you all

  2389. Amen

  2390. Amen
