  55. Let's pray.

  56. Let's pray.

  57. Let's pray.

  58. and we pray that you would fill us once again with a sense of wonder

  59. that we should be able to draw near to the holy God

  60. the God who exclaims his holiness to us so frequently in his word

  61. and we thank you that that oh Lord lies upon the heart and minds of your people

  62. as they come towards you they realize that it is by your grace alone

  63. that they are able and provided for as they come into your holy presence

  64. we thank you for all that makes you holy that makes you so far above us

  65. in the life that you have as the uncreated God

  66. and we thank you for the way that in your sovereign rule over us

  67. you are unique in yourself

  68. well we bless you Lord tonight that all your attributes that are set out for us in your word

  69. many of which we find it so difficult to comprehend

  70. that they are used Lord to the salvation of your people

  71. that they are for the furtherance of your own kingdom

  72. your wisdom and your power and your love and your might

  73. your judgment

  74. that all of these things together combine to make you God

  75. and we bless you that in the unity of your being

  76. you provide such a refuge and help for your people

  77. bless us we pray as we come once again into your presence

  78. we thank you for your word that guides us at all times

  79. that teaches us that shows us the way of life

  80. and we thank you that tonight we are privileged once again

  81. to come around your word and to come seeking

  82. that your word will place itself through your spirit in our hearts

  83. and we thank you Lord for the worship of your church

  84. for the way in which we can participate together

  85. in the worship of your name

  86. and we thank you for that corporate witness

  87. that we are able to bear

  88. in every community where your people worship

  89. to the Lord who presides over all things

  90. and we bless you Lord that you have in the past seen

  91. to bless the gatherings of your people

  92. not only to themselves and as they gather

  93. but also to the world around them

  94. we pray that that will be the case in our day too

  95. that people will take note of us

  96. that we have been with Jesus

  97. that our life may be day by day transformed

  98. so that it will conform to that

  99. which your word sets out for us

  100. is fit and appropriate for your people

  101. and we thank you for every aid that you give us Lord

  102. from day to day

  103. and as we sing your praises in regard to your greatness

  104. we give thanks that you have not stood aloof from us Lord

  105. though we deserve that you should turn your back upon us

  106. and we bless you that instead you have come into this world

  107. in the person of your son

  108. and done so in such a very personal and human way

  109. and we bless you for the affinity you have with your people

  110. and for the way that not only do you understand

  111. and know their situation and condition as God

  112. but you have entered in to take to yourself

  113. our human experiences

  114. even to the extent of being tempted

  115. to the extent of suffering as you suffered in this life

  116. and we give thanks that you went as far as to give yourself in death

  117. the death of the cross

  118. for the well-being and salvation of your people

  119. Lord we pray that tonight your blessing will be with all your people

  120. everywhere throughout the world

  121. and we give thanks that on this day

  122. many millions of people

  123. have gathered in your name like we do here

  124. and have come to seek to exalt and glorify

  125. the name of the same God we worship

  126. and we ask that your people everywhere will know your blessing

  127. in these days in which we find

  128. in our own locality and in our own nation

  129. such a downturn

  130. in the way in which people regard God

  131. and regard his day and regard his word

  132. and we do pray Lord that your kingdom will advance among us as well

  133. that you will be pleased oh God to bless your people

  134. in their witness

  135. and that you be pleased to send forth your light and your truth

  136. to draw people to yourself

  137. may many tonight Lord who have hearts closed against you

  138. and even those who publicly and vocally proclaim against you

  139. may they come to be converted and quickened

  140. and brought into your ways

  141. and may there be many Lord who will yet

  142. turn out to be great ambassadors for Christ

  143. and to that end we pray that you would raise up

  144. those who would come to preach the gospel

  145. not only in our own denomination

  146. and throughout our land

  147. but throughout the whole world

  148. that you would raise up those

  149. who will be heralds of the peace of Christ

  150. and will bring that message of the gospel

  151. to a lost world

  152. and we thank you for every encouragement you give us

  153. and we pray that we may build upon these

  154. to be all the more zealous and committed to your way

  155. and to serving you in this world

  156. and we think of those in your word

  157. who when they were confronted with your greatness

  158. and your holiness and your might

  159. not only did they come to bow in your presence

  160. and even prostrate themselves to the ground

  161. but Lord also asked you Lord what will you have me to do

  162. and so we pray that that will be the same for ourselves

  163. that our concern might be Lord

  164. to serve you faithfully

  165. and to exalt your glorious and great name

  166. bless we pray those tonight

  167. who have particular adversities and difficulties to face

  168. remember those belonging to this congregation itself

  169. who have at this time Lord

  170. difficult providences to contend with and overcome

  171. bless them we pray

  172. whether it be over the loss of loved ones

  173. or an illness or anxiety over loved ones

  174. in regard to their work

  175. or whatever else causes

  176. our anxieties from time to time

  177. oh Lord we pray that we may draw our strength from you

  178. and we pray that you would use even these times of trial

  179. affliction and difficulty for ourselves

  180. to be a means by which we will reach out

  181. and take hold of you by faith

  182. and so further our lives in relation with you

  183. bless we pray tonight the unsaved

  184. the many unsaved around us who care not

  185. for the things of God or for their own souls

  186. Lord we ask that you would send

  187. your own spirit to quicken and to awaken many souls

  188. and to bring us Lord to a sense of

  189. a realization of eternal things

  190. and so we ask that tonight your spirit will even be working

  191. whether it be through those who are at home watching

  192. online or in some ways not at all interested in the things of God

  193. you have raised up for yourself in the past

  194. a people who in certain times Lord did not

  195. look out for you or reach out to you

  196. and yet you came into their lostness

  197. you came into their darkness and you quickened them and brought them to life

  198. and so we pray that you would be abroad amongst all our communities to that end

  199. we thank you again for your day

  200. we pray that you would enable us oh Lord to

  201. not only enjoy it for ourselves but to continue

  202. to commend it to others

  203. and where attempts are made locally or nationally to further erode

  204. the importance of your day

  205. and the sanctity of your day

  206. oh Lord hear our prayer as we pray

  207. in regard to these things locally especially

  208. at this time

  209. we ask that you would be pleased to bless

  210. the crying of your people

  211. to hear us as we pray

  212. that you would ensure oh Lord

  213. by your own blessing

  214. and by your own power

  215. that we may continue to enjoy

  216. a restful and peaceful Lord's day

  217. and that many will come yet to make it

  218. a day of worship

  219. and a day of seeking the Lord

  220. while he is to be found

  221. and calling upon him

  222. while he is near

  223. now bless all the troubled places in the world

  224. that we hear of from day to day

  225. and those we don't hear of at all

  226. bless especially where there is war

  227. and the threat of terror

  228. and the massive loss of life

  229. we pray that you would bless oh Lord

  230. the people involved in such difficulties

  231. in such stressful times

  232. whether it be in the Middle East

  233. or in Ukraine or Yemen

  234. Lord we know that there is so much in our world

  235. that causes people to cry out in pain

  236. and so we pray that their cry may be addressed to you

  237. we pray that you would bring peace

  238. where there is war

  239. that you would bring stability

  240. where there is uncertainty

  241. bring assurance we pray

  242. where there is doubt

  243. and grant that you would reveal yourself Lord

  244. as one who is on the throne of the universe

  245. and presides over all things

  246. and is worthy

  247. that we should fall down

  248. and worship you

  249. and serve you

  250. continue with us now we pray

  251. hear our prayer

  252. and answer us we pray

  253. in Jesus name

  254. Amen

  255. I'm going to sing again to God's praise

  256. they're singing this time from

  257. Psalm 18

  258. this time from the Scottish Psalter version

  259. and beginning at verse 27

  260. June is Moravia

  261. that's on page 221

  262. verses 27 to 32

  263. for thou wilt the afflicted save

  264. in grief that low do lie

  265. but wilt bring down the countenance of them

  266. whose looks are high

  267. the Lord will light my candle so

  268. that it shall shine full bright

  269. the Lord my God will also make my darkness

  270. to be light

  271. by thee through troops of men I break

  272. and them discomfort all

  273. and by my God assisting me

  274. I overleap a wall

  275. as for God

  276. perfect is his way

  277. the Lord his word is tried

  278. he is a buckler to all those

  279. who do in him confide

  280. who but the Lord is God

  281. but he who is

  282. a rock and stay

  283. does God that girdeth me

  284. with strength

  285. and perfect makes

  286. my way

  287. these verses to the tune Moravia

  288. for thou wilt the afflicted save

  289. for thou wilt the afflicted save

  290. in grief and older life

  291. but wilt bring down the countenance

  292. of their blessings

  293. all their blessings

  294. and high

  295. the Lord will light my hand

  296. and his soul

  297. and he shall shine full bright

  298. the Lord my God

  299. will also make my darkness

  300. to be light

  301. by thee through troops of men I break

  302. and tear

  303. e

  304. !

  305. e

  306. This is me, the Lord is glorified.

  307. He is a father to all those who live in him all night.

  308. Who are the Lord, this hope of me, who is an all-nast day?

  309. This hope that earth did me which served and perfected my way.

  310. Now please turn with me to Joshua, where we're going to read God's Word this evening.

  311. Joshua chapter 5.

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  312. And we'll read through the whole of the chapter.

  313. Joshua chapter 5, from the beginning.

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  314. As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west,

  315. and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea,

  316. heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over,

  317. their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.

  318. At that time the Lord said to Joshua,

  319. Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.

  320. So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gebeeth Haraloth.

  321. This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them.

  322. All the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war,

  323. had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt.

  324. Though all the people who came out had been circumcised,

  325. yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness,

  326. after they had come out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.

  327. For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness,

  328. until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished,

  329. because they did not obey the voice of the Lord.

  330. The Lord swore to them that he would not let them see the land

  331. that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us,

  332. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  333. So it was their children whom he raised up in their place that Joshua circumcised.

  334. For they were uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way.

  335. When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished,

  336. they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed.

  337. And the Lord said to Joshua,

  338. Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.

  339. And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.

  340. While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal,

  341. they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month,

  342. in the evening on the plains of Jericho.

  343. And the day after the Passover, on that very day,

  344. they ate of the produce of the land,

  345. and leavened cakes and parched grain.

  346. And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land.

  347. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel,

  348. but they ate the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

  349. When Joshua was by Jericho,

  350. he lifted up his eyes and looked,

  351. and behold, a man was standing before him

  352. with his drawn sword in his hand.

  353. And Joshua went to him and said to him,

  354. Are you for us or for our adversaries?

  355. And he said,

  356. No, but I am the commander of the army of the Lord.

  357. Now I have come.

  358. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth

  359. and worshipped and said to him,

  360. What does my Lord say to his servant?

  361. And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua,

  362. Take off your sandals from off your feet,

  363. for the place where you are standing is holy.

  364. And Joshua did so.

  365. Again, may God, with this blessing,

  366. follow our reading of his word.

  367. Now we'll sing now some verses from Psalm 66.

  368. Psalm 66 on page 83, verses 1 to 7.

  369. Tune this time is Selma.

  370. Shout loud with joy to God,

  371. all earth your chorus raise.

  372. Sing loud the honor of his name,

  373. and glorious make his praise.

  374. Speak thus to God the Lord,

  375. how great your works of power,

  376. so overwhelming is your might,

  377. that falls before you cower.

  378. All earth bows down to you,

  379. they sing aloud your fame.

  380. They never cease to celebrate the glory of your name.

  381. Come, see what God has done,

  382. his mighty works of old,

  383. his deeds towards the human race.

  384. How awesome to behold!

  385. To let his people pass on foot

  386. through waters broad,

  387. he turned the sea into dry land.

  388. Let us rejoice in God.

  389. With might and power he rules,

  390. on nations sets his eyes.

  391. So let not rebels in their pride

  392. against him turn and rise.

  393. These verses in Psalm 66,

  394. shout loud with joy to God.

  395. singing singing singing

  396. Thank you.

  397. Thank you.

  398. Thank you.

  399. Thank you.

  400. Thank you.

  401. Thank you.

  402. Thank you.

  403. Thank you.

  404. Thank you.

  405. Thank you.

  406. Thank you.

  407. Thank you.

  408. Thank you.

  409. Thank you.

  410. Thank you.

  411. Thank you.

  412. and now they've begun to enter the promised land and to settle in the promised land

  413. and to face the adversaries that they meet and met within the promised land.

  414. It's the final phase of their journey towards this land that God described for them

  415. as a land flowing with milk and honey.

  416. So in chapter 3 and 4 you find an emphasis on the crossing itself,

  417. on the way in which they set up a memorial of stones.

  418. And then in this chapter 5 we come to read about the circumcision of those who had been born since they left Egypt

  419. and also the Passover that they kept when they reached this place at Gilgal.

  420. And so all of these details are deliberate links with the past.

  421. And that's important in the teaching that you find in the book of Joshua

  422. in regard to the people coming to establish themselves under God and under Joshua's leadership in the land of Canaan.

  423. There are links here with the past.

  424. You find it in, as we said, in the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea mentioned, and circumcision.

  425. So everything you find now in verses 13 to 15 must fit into the emphasis that you have here of links with the past.

  426. And links with the past are important because Joshua and Moses especially are actually linked in the passage.

  427. Things you read about here about Joshua are also things that you read about in terms of Moses

  428. and how God had used him to lead the people out of Egypt.

  429. The conquest of Canaan begins with this supernatural appearance

  430. on the part of the man who calls himself the commander of the armies of the Lord.

  431. And that means that it's a continuation really of God guiding his people,

  432. being with his people, leading his people, blessing his people,

  433. making them powerful in the face of their enemies.

  434. All of that follows through from the time of Moses to the time now of Joshua under his leadership too.

  435. The emphasis really is something that's very important for ourselves.

  436. The Lord of Moses is the Lord of Joshua.

  437. The Lord of Moses' day is the Lord of Joshua's day.

  438. And the Lord of Joshua's day is the Lord of our day.

  439. That principle of continuation of the Lord's provision for his people,

  440. the Lord going before his people as their commander,

  441. is something that's so crucial for us today as a church.

  442. In that sense, nothing has changed.

  443. The same God who delivers his people is the God who goes before them.

  444. The God who brings them out of adversity and out of darkness

  445. is the God who goes before them in whatever remains of their journey.

  446. And so there are all these important links with the past,

  447. but there are links that give them an assurance for the future.

  448. And isn't that how it is for yourself tonight?

  449. We look back over the history of this congregation,

  450. even not to go beyond that,

  451. or the history of our community,

  452. and can reflect upon, as we're singing,

  453. come and behold the works of God,

  454. the great things which God did in the past,

  455. the times of special blessing,

  456. the times of revival,

  457. the times of God coming in power amongst his people

  458. and bringing many others into his kingdom.

  459. Well, that same God is our God tonight.

  460. He has not changed.

  461. And we can look to him as one,

  462. just as Joshua did in his day.

  463. He looked to him as the God of Moses,

  464. and we look to him as the same God

  465. who has always been with his people down through the ages.

  466. And whatever's been in your own life,

  467. personally leading up to where you are tonight

  468. in the providence of God,

  469. be assured of this,

  470. that the God who has been in the past with his people

  471. is the God who will be with his people in the future.

  472. And as you, if you're a follower of the Lord,

  473. a Christian, someone who knows the Lord as your Savior,

  474. this is really one of the precious things

  475. that you've come to know, isn't it?

  476. That the God who was with you yesterday

  477. is the God who is with you today.

  478. And the God who is with you today

  479. is going to be with you,

  480. God willing, if you live to see tomorrow.

  481. He's going to be with you tomorrow as well.

  482. It doesn't matter what adversaries stand in the way,

  483. whether they're Canaanites

  484. or present-day equivalents.

  485. This remains very true.

  486. And whatever changes in your providence

  487. actually come your way,

  488. however, things might change unexpectedly.

  489. This is not going to change.

  490. The same God will go before you into the future.

  491. Well then, as you look at that,

  492. there are three things here

  493. that we can briefly look at.

  494. First of all,

  495. the passage speaks about a confrontation

  496. where Joshua comes to see

  497. this man with a drawn sword in his hand

  498. and Joshua went out to him with this question.

  499. So there's a confrontation there.

  500. They come to meet together in this unexpected way.

  501. Secondly, you find a revelation

  502. because this man whom Joshua sees here

  503. comes to reveal himself

  504. as the commander of the armies of the Lord.

  505. And he says to him,

  506. I am the commander of the Lord's army.

  507. Now I have come.

  508. And thirdly,

  509. there's an instruction given to Joshua.

  510. As Joshua went to him,

  511. what does my Lord say to his servant?

  512. How often do you find that in the Bible,

  513. don't you?

  514. People who come in the presence of God

  515. and virtually overtaken by the awesomeness of God,

  516. instead of actually being repelled,

  517. instead of what you might think

  518. would be that they would just fall down dumb

  519. and not really have anything to say,

  520. just here in Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  521. you find that same emphasis.

  522. What will you have me to do?

  523. What does my Lord say to his servant?

  524. What command, what instruction,

  525. what information do you have for me?

  526. What do you require of me?

  527. And the Lord answers,

  528. this man answers,

  529. take off your sandals from off your feet,

  530. for the place where you are standing is holy.

  531. And of course,

  532. that again ties up,

  533. doesn't it,

  534. with Moses in the wilderness

  535. at the burning bush,

  536. at the outset of God's revelation of himself

  537. in this way to his people,

  538. as they're in Egypt at that time.

  539. Of course,

  540. here is God coming to reveal himself to them

  541. and to say,

  542. I've heard their cry.

  543. I've come down to deliver them.

  544. And he said to Moses,

  545. take off your shoes from off your feet,

  546. for the place on which you're standing is holy.

  547. And just to link up again,

  548. here's Joshua,

  549. the new commander,

  550. well,

  551. the new leader,

  552. with this commander of the Lord.

  553. As we'll see,

  554. it's the Lord himself in this form.

  555. And he's given the same instruction,

  556. as if to say,

  557. God is still the same God in his holiness

  558. as he was with Moses too.

  559. A confrontation,

  560. sudden,

  561. dramatic,

  562. unusual.

  563. When Joshua was by Jericho,

  564. he lifted up his eyes

  565. and looked,

  566. and behold,

  567. a man standing before him

  568. with his sword drawn in his hand.

  569. And it's emphasizing

  570. that it was a man.

  571. He had the features of a man.

  572. It was a human form.

  573. And although we read

  574. as you go through

  575. the rest of the chapter,

  576. it's obvious that this is God

  577. in this form

  578. that has revealed himself

  579. here to Joshua.

  580. Something that has anticipated

  581. the coming of the Son of God

  582. permanently in human form

  583. in the incarnation,

  584. the New Testament age.

  585. But here it is,

  586. this man.

  587. It's emphasizing,

  588. a man was standing before him.

  589. Joshua saw a man.

  590. Joshua saw a human form.

  591. There's an important emphasis in that.

  592. It wasn't an angelic form.

  593. It wasn't anything other than human.

  594. It wasn't something different

  595. to God or to man.

  596. It was a man that he saw.

  597. So you see,

  598. there's an affinity there

  599. with Joshua and with his people.

  600. As we said,

  601. it's something that anticipates

  602. the coming of the Lord

  603. in human form

  604. as he was born as a human.

  605. And that's an important emphasis,

  606. of course,

  607. in so many ways.

  608. It applies to Jesus especially,

  609. the Son of God incarnate,

  610. taking our human nature to himself.

  611. Now through the Old Testament,

  612. you find this figure

  613. from time to time appearing.

  614. Very often he's called

  615. the Angel of the Lord.

  616. But he has a human form

  617. and you find him at different times

  618. revealing himself

  619. in the Old Testament.

  620. And as always for a particular reason

  621. in certain circumstances.

  622. And theologians believe

  623. that it's right to see this

  624. as God in human form,

  625. anticipating the coming

  626. of the Son of God,

  627. Jesus,

  628. who came to be Jesus of Nazareth.

  629. But here is something down

  630. through the years

  631. of the Old Testament

  632. that anticipates that,

  633. that prepares a way for that,

  634. that really instructs the people

  635. that God is going to come

  636. and he's going to come

  637. in a way that closely ties himself

  638. to them,

  639. even in a human sense.

  640. And where is there

  641. a more important truth tonight

  642. for you and for me

  643. than the fact that God

  644. has come in the person

  645. of his Son

  646. and he's taken

  647. and he's taken our human nature

  648. to himself.

  649. He's united our humanness

  650. to his deity

  651. and he remains God

  652. and man.

  653. You see,

  654. when the Son of God

  655. came into the world,

  656. he came into the world

  657. to die the death of the cross

  658. and to rise from the dead

  659. on the third day.

  660. But he came into the world

  661. as part of that

  662. to engage with

  663. our circumstances

  664. as human beings

  665. in this world.

  666. He was,

  667. as Hebrews puts it,

  668. tempted in all points

  669. like as we are

  670. and yet without sin.

  671. Tonight you can go to Jesus

  672. and you don't need to be afraid

  673. that he doesn't understand

  674. your circumstances.

  675. Because whatever

  676. your circumstances are

  677. as human circumstances,

  678. as human sufferings,

  679. as human situations

  680. in this life,

  681. Jesus has been there

  682. before you.

  683. And not only has Jesus

  684. been there before you,

  685. but he's been there

  686. before you

  687. so that he can take

  688. from that

  689. allied with

  690. and joined

  691. to his deity

  692. to be the saviour

  693. that you and I need.

  694. We need a saviour

  695. and we have a saviour

  696. who is himself

  697. touched with the feeling

  698. of our infirmities,

  699. who understands

  700. what we're going through

  701. and who's able

  702. to deal with it

  703. as the God-man

  704. that he is

  705. in a way that

  706. nobody else can.

  707. Here is a man

  708. revealed to Joshua

  709. with a sword

  710. in his hand,

  711. a drawn sword.

  712. In other words,

  713. what Joshua saw here

  714. was a man ready

  715. for combat.

  716. Somebody was just

  717. going out

  718. to take on

  719. his enemies.

  720. He's ready for action.

  721. His sword is in his hand.

  722. And that draws

  723. Joshua's mind

  724. to ask him

  725. this question.

  726. Are you for us

  727. or for our adversaries?

  728. Now,

  729. there's a question.

  730. And you know,

  731. in the experience

  732. of Jesus,

  733. there was never

  734. a question

  735. as to whose side

  736. he was on.

  737. But as he came

  738. into this world

  739. and went into

  740. the desert

  741. to be tempted

  742. by Satan,

  743. and you have that

  744. in Matthew's gospel

  745. and Luke's gospel,

  746. the specific temptations

  747. with which the devil

  748. came to assault

  749. the Lord,

  750. trying to get him

  751. to be deflected

  752. from the path

  753. he was on,

  754. trying to get him

  755. to leave this path

  756. of obedience

  757. to the Father.

  758. That's really what

  759. the temptations

  760. essentially were about.

  761. Because the devil

  762. knew if he could

  763. manage that,

  764. then he would

  765. disqualify Jesus

  766. from being a savior

  767. of his people.

  768. I'm not saying

  769. in any way

  770. that there's any danger

  771. of Jesus doing that.

  772. Can you just imagine,

  773. let's just say,

  774. the inhabitants

  775. of these angelic

  776. armies of the Lord

  777. of which he is

  778. the commander,

  779. just imagine,

  780. if you like,

  781. as it were,

  782. as they look at

  783. the Son of God

  784. in our nature

  785. in the desert,

  786. tempted by the devil

  787. and saying,

  788. if you are the Son of God,

  789. command these stones

  790. that they be made bread.

  791. You can just imagine

  792. them holding their breath.

  793. What's he going to do?

  794. Whose Messiah

  795. is he going to be?

  796. Whose servant

  797. is he going to be?

  798. Who is he going to obey?

  799. The Father who sent him

  800. or the devil

  801. who's tempting him?

  802. There was never a question

  803. in Christ's mind,

  804. of course.

  805. But remember,

  806. the temptation

  807. for him was real.

  808. Something we cannot

  809. fully enter into,

  810. but we mustn't think

  811. that because Jesus

  812. never sinned

  813. and couldn't sin

  814. in that sense

  815. that he was therefore

  816. not really subject

  817. to temptation

  818. like you and I are.

  819. He was tempted

  820. in all points

  821. like as we are,

  822. yet without sin.

  823. That means he was

  824. truly tempted,

  825. really tempted,

  826. tempted as a human being.

  827. And here he is,

  828. and there's the question.

  829. Are you for us

  830. or for our adversaries?

  831. Jesus in the wilderness,

  832. tempted by the devil,

  833. is he there for his people?

  834. Will he continue

  835. in that path to the cross?

  836. Will he capitulate

  837. to the devil

  838. and so leave us

  839. in our lostness?

  840. And of course,

  841. you know what happened.

  842. He dismissed the devil

  843. and not in any way at all,

  844. giving heed to

  845. obey his temptation.

  846. And isn't it a wonderful

  847. truth for you tonight?

  848. Not only that you can go

  849. to one who knows

  850. your circumstances,

  851. but one who's been in them

  852. and has overcome them.

  853. One who has faced the devil

  854. and overcome him.

  855. One who knows what it is

  856. to be tempted

  857. and yet never yielded.

  858. One who knows

  859. the power of temptation,

  860. especially in the hands

  861. of the evil one,

  862. and yet who in himself,

  863. not for one single iota

  864. of a second did he capitulate

  865. to what the devil

  866. was asking him to do.

  867. Now when you come

  868. to your temptations

  869. and you come like I do

  870. to have to confess to God,

  871. Lord, I shouldn't have done that.

  872. I shouldn't have listened to that.

  873. I shouldn't have capitulated

  874. and given in to the temptation,

  875. whatever it was.

  876. You take that to the Lord.

  877. You express your sorrow.

  878. You express your repentance.

  879. You come to the Lord

  880. and how thankful

  881. and how relieved you are

  882. that the God,

  883. the Lord,

  884. the commander

  885. that you bring

  886. your concerns to,

  887. that you bring

  888. your confession to,

  889. is one who's been there

  890. and overcome

  891. and says,

  892. thank you for bringing

  893. this to me.

  894. I can deal with the problem.

  895. Leave it with me.

  896. I will give you

  897. the capacity

  898. because that's something

  899. that I've proved

  900. already to be mine

  901. in overcoming your enemy.

  902. this confrontation

  903. and this question then

  904. from Joshua,

  905. are you for us

  906. or for our adversaries?

  907. And then you find

  908. in answering that,

  909. that this figure said,

  910. he came to reveal himself.

  911. There's a revelation

  912. following the confrontation.

  913. Are you for us

  914. or for our adversaries?

  915. And he said,

  916. no,

  917. but I am the commander

  918. of the army of the Lord.

  919. Now I have come.

  920. And that seems

  921. rather a strange answer

  922. because he didn't answer

  923. the question directly.

  924. He didn't say,

  925. no,

  926. I'm here for you

  927. and I'm here for the people

  928. that you're the leader of.

  929. He simply said,

  930. no,

  931. but I'm the commander

  932. of the army of the Lord.

  933. Now I have come.

  934. Why such a strange reply?

  935. Why didn't he answer it

  936. directly yes or no?

  937. Well,

  938. I think one of the reasons

  939. for that is that

  940. here is the Lord,

  941. as we said,

  942. revealing himself

  943. in human form,

  944. but still saying to Joshua,

  945. I am here as the commander

  946. of the armies of the Lord.

  947. Therefore,

  948. I am here to direct you.

  949. You're not here to direct me.

  950. You ask me,

  951. am I here for you

  952. or for your adversaries?

  953. I am here as the commander.

  954. I am here to do my will.

  955. I am here not to actually

  956. meet your questions as such

  957. because you don't control me.

  958. I control you.

  959. No,

  960. but I am here

  961. as the commander

  962. of the armies of the Lord.

  963. In other words,

  964. he's not bound

  965. by Joshua's questions.

  966. He's not himself

  967. duty bound

  968. to answer Joshua's questions

  969. the way Joshua

  970. would like them answered.

  971. He's demonstrating

  972. that whatever Joshua

  973. says to him,

  974. he's not in charge

  975. of this person's life.

  976. He's not in charge

  977. of the situation.

  978. It is the commander

  979. of the armies of the Lord.

  980. The Lord himself

  981. is in command

  982. of the armies

  983. of the angels of heaven.

  984. He's now saying,

  985. this is why I'm here.

  986. I'm the commander

  987. of the Lord,

  988. of the army of the Lord.

  989. Now I have come.

  990. And that's an interesting

  991. reference as well.

  992. Now I have come.

  993. He is for them,

  994. but he's not under

  995. Joshua's command.

  996. Joshua is the commander

  997. in human terms

  998. of the people.

  999. He's the leader

  1000. of the people.

  1001. He's taken over

  1002. from Moses.

  1003. He's been appointed

  1004. by God.

  1005. But here this person

  1006. is saying to him,

1007. this figure is saying to him,

  1008. yes,

  1009. you're the commander

  1010. of the people.

  1011. That's what you've been

  1012. placed as.

  1013. But I am here

  1014. as your commander.

  1015. You don't command me.

  1016. I command you.

  1017. I'm in charge

  1018. of the situation.

  1019. And

  1020. where he says,

  1021. I am the commander

1022. of the army of the Lord,

  1023. the commander

  1024. of the Lord's

  1025. army of angels,

  1026. I think he means.

  1027. It's really the same

  1028. as we said earlier,

  1029. a reference to

1030. the angel of the Lord,

  1031. where you find that

  1032. in the Old Testament

  1033. described.

  1034. And he says,

  1035. now I have come.

  1036. And you see,

  1037. again,

  1038. he doesn't say,

  1039. now I have come

  1040. to help you.

  1041. Now I have come

1042. for this or that purpose.

  1043. He simply says,

  1044. now I have come.

1045. And through the Old Testament,

  1046. I'm sure these references

  1047. and these statements

  1048. lived with the people

  1049. of God

  1050. in their memories,

  1051. those of them

  1052. who could recall them.

  1053. And that itself,

  1054. too,

  1055. was for them

  1056. a sign of hope.

  1057. a sign of anticipation

  1058. or anticipation

  1059. of something

1060. which was going to happen

  1061. as it did

  1062. in the coming

1063. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1064. And you remember

1065. how Psalm 40 puts it.

  1066. Now I have come.

  1067. Hebrews picks that up

  1068. and says,

  1069. now I have come

  1070. to do your will,

  1071. O Lord.

  1072. There's Jesus

  1073. from the days

  1074. of the Old Testament,

  1075. the anticipation

  1076. of Jesus,

  1077. the servant

  1078. of the Lord.

1079. And there is the voice

  1080. put in the mouth

  1081. of Jesus

  1082. before he became human.

  1083. And nevertheless,

  1084. it's there in prophecy.

1085. It's there in the Old Testament

  1086. anticipating his coming.

  1087. Now I have come.

1088. This is what the Old Testament

  1089. was waiting for

  1090. all these years.

  1091. And here's an anticipation

  1092. of it

  1093. on the lips

  1094. of this commander

  1095. of the army

  1096. who's speaking

  1097. to Joshua.

1098. You find the same thing

  1099. in other parts

  1100. of the Psalms

  1101. as well.

  1102. Psalm 50 verse 3,

    Psalms 50:3

  1103. Psalm 98

  1104. and verse 9.

1105. And so when he says,

  1106. now I have come,

  1107. as that anticipates

  1108. the coming

  1109. of Jesus.

  1110. So you can look

  1111. back tonight

  1112. and say,

  1113. it's actually

  1114. really happened.

  1115. This very act

  1116. that the Old Testament

  1117. anticipated

  1118. through these events,

  1119. it's actually happened.

1120. It's now in the past.

  1121. And it's a reality.

  1122. The Lord has come.

1123. He's come as the commander

1124. of the armies of the Lord.

1125. He's come as the Son of God

  1126. in our nature.

1127. He's come into this world

  1128. and He's come permanently.

  1129. It's God's arrival

  1130. to lead His people.

  1131. Is there anything

1132. more precious to you tonight

1133. than that the Lord has come?

  1134. That this weary world

1135. so full of sin and sorrow

  1136. has somebody

  1137. who's come into it

1138. who is set above it,

  1139. who is the commander

1140. of the armies of the Lord,

1141. who has come into this world

  1142. and now permanently remains

  1143. God and man

1144. in the person of Jesus?

  1145. Is there anything

  1146. more precious to yourself

1147. than to know this person?

1148. Than to know this commander

1149. of the armies of the Lord?

  1150. Is there anything

  1151. more wonderful

  1152. than to realize tonight

  1153. that the Jesus

  1154. you serve,

1155. the Jesus you believe in,

  1156. the Jesus you've come

  1157. to trust in

  1158. by His grace

  1159. is none other

  1160. than this great figure

  1161. who was seen

  1162. by Joshua

  1163. and by Moses

  1164. and by others

1165. in the days of the Old Testament

1166. as the angel of the Lord?

  1167. Now I have come.

1168. And here He is assuring you

  1169. through this very passage

  1170. of Scripture

  1171. and His fulfillment

  1172. in Jesus

  1173. that that coming

  1174. is permanent,

  1175. that that coming

  1176. is something

  1177. that's decisive

  1178. and definitive

1179. in the history of the world.

  1180. it lies really

  1181. as the pivotal

  1182. point of history.

  1183. Whatever people

  1184. will say to you

  1185. as the most important

  1186. events in history

  1187. and there are many

  1188. events in history

  1189. that are historic,

  1190. that are really

  1191. crucial events.

  1192. Many times

  1193. in the history

  1194. of humanity

  1195. where discoveries

  1196. have been made

  1197. that people will say

  1198. surely that's one

  1199. of the pivotal moments

  1200. in history,

  1201. the discovery

  1202. of whatever it is,

  1203. whether it's some kind

  1204. of cure for this,

  1205. that or other

  1206. or some event

  1207. that demonstrates

  1208. the ingenuity

  1209. of human beings

  1210. and their inventiveness

  1211. and so on.

  1212. But here is

  1213. the event.

  1214. Now

  1215. I

  1216. have come.

  1217. I have come.

  1218. God

  1219. has entered

  1220. this world.

  1221. He's done so

  1222. in the person

  1223. of His Son,

  1224. the very God

  1225. of Moses

  1226. and of Joshua

  1227. and tonight

  1228. this reality

  1229. remains a reality

  1230. and will be

  1231. forevermore.

  1232. I have come.

  1233. Now here is

  1234. something

  1235. for you

  1236. and for me

  1237. that really

  1238. surely

  1239. instills

  1240. a sense of

  1241. dependence

  1242. upon this person.

  1243. Because here

  1244. you are

  1245. and I am

  1246. tonight

  1247. without human

  1248. needs.

  1249. Here we are

  1250. needing somebody

  1251. who can understand

  1252. our situation.

  1253. Somebody who

  1254. can appreciate

  1255. what we're

  1256. going through

  1257. in this world

  1258. whether it's

  1259. temptation

  1260. or suffering

  1261. or whatever.

  1262. Here is

  1263. somebody who

  1264. knows what

  1265. it is to

  1266. bear the

  1267. sin of

  1268. his people

  1269. successfully,

  1270. vicariously,

  1271. powerfully,

  1272. permanently,

  1273. forevermore

  1274. in the result

  1275. of it

  1276. on the cross.

  1277. Here is

  1278. somebody who

  1279. can deal

  1280. with your

  1281. situation

  1282. as nobody

  1283. else can.

  1284. Here is

  1285. somebody who's

  1286. saying,

  1287. by these words

  1288. I have

  1289. come.

  1290. He's saying,

  1291. I have

  1292. come so that

  1293. you can say

  1294. he's here for

  1295. me.

  1296. He's here for

  1297. me in my

  1298. situation

  1299. and I can't

  1300. do without

  1301. him and I

  1302. can't get help

  1303. from anyone

  1304. else the way

  1305. I get it

  1306. from him.

  1307. Lo, I

  1308. have come.

  1309. And the

  1310. fact that he

  1311. has a sword

  1312. drawn in his

  1313. hand, of

  1314. course that

  1315. was relevant

  1316. to Joshua's

  1317. situation,

  1318. the people's

  1319. situation then

  1320. when they

  1321. had to do

  1322. battle with

  1323. various inhabitants

  1324. of the land

  1325. to drive them

  1326. out and to

  1327. actually settle

  1328. in the land

  1329. and the

  1330. various ways

  1331. in which in

  1332. the following

  1333. chapters you

  1334. see the

  1335. defeats as

  1336. well as the

  1337. ways in

  1338. which the

  1339. overcame.

  1340. But all of

  1341. that is

  1342. important in

  1343. this context

  1344. of this man

  1345. being seen

  1346. with a sword

  1347. drawn in his

  1348. hand.

  1349. In other

  1350. words, Joshua

  1351. has been

  1352. assured that

  1353. this person

  1354. is here to

  1355. lead them,

  1356. to lead them

  1357. to be the

  1358. conqueror of

  1359. their enemies.

  1360. And that's

  1361. so true of

  1362. everything you

  1363. face as far

  1364. as Jesus is

  1365. concerned.

  1366. When the

  1367. Lord is your

  1368. Savior,

  1369. whatever you

  1370. have to

  1371. meet with,

  1372. whatever

  1373. enmity you

  1374. meet with,

  1375. whatever

  1376. opposition you

  1377. meet with,

  1378. you may

  1379. think,

  1380. I'm never

  1381. going to be

  1382. able to

  1383. overcome this.

  1384. The powers

  1385. in the world

  1386. are so great,

  1387. far greater

  1388. than I can

  1389. handle myself,

  1390. you might

  1391. say.

  1392. The things

  1393. that I see

  1394. in my life

  1395. loom so

  1396. large and

  1397. make such a

  1398. dark shadow

  1399. in my soul.

  1400. how can I

  1401. overcome

  1402. this?

  1403. Well,

  1404. look to

  1405. this person

  1406. because this

  1407. is how you

  1408. must always

  1409. see him,

  1410. with a

  1411. sword drawn

  1412. in his

  1413. hand,

  1414. ready to

  1415. conquer all

  1416. your foes,

  1417. all your

  1418. adversaries,

  1419. everything that

  1420. causes you

  1421. concern.

  1422. I mean,

  1423. in the

  1424. Gospels,

  1425. you find the

  1426. record of

  1427. the exploits

  1428. of Jesus,

  1429. the way

  1430. in which

  1431. he demonstrated

  1432. himself to

  1433. be someone

  1434. unique,

  1435. healing

  1436. diseases,

  1437. raising

  1438. people from

  1439. the dead,

  1440. all of

  1441. these things

  1442. demonstrating

  1443. that he

  1444. had come,

  1445. and he

  1446. had come

  1447. for the

  1448. benefit of

  1449. his people,

  1450. and that

  1451. such a

  1452. person is

  1453. worthy of

  1454. your trust,

  1455. such a

  1456. person surely

  1457. is someone

  1458. whom you

  1459. cannot bypass

  1460. to put your

  1461. trust in

  1462. anyone else.

  1463. Lo,

  1464. I have

  1465. come,

  1466. and not

  1467. only for

  1468. individuals,

  1469. but also

  1470. for congregations,

  1471. for denominations

  1472. as a church,

  1473. who do we

  1474. need tonight

  1475. to guide us

  1476. into the

  1477. future?

  1478. Who do we

  1479. need tonight?

  1480. Who do we

  1481. have tonight

  1482. to go before

  1483. us into the

  1484. advance of

  1485. his cause?

  1486. Who do we

  1487. have to take

  1488. on the forces

  1489. that we see

  1490. are seeking

  1491. to destroy

  1492. the gospel

  1493. and the

  1494. Lord's day

  1495. and the

  1496. Ten Commandments

  1497. and all the

  1498. things that

  1499. are precious

  1500. to the

  1501. Lord's

  1502. people?

  1503. Look to

  1504. Jesus,

  1505. because as

  1506. you see him

  1507. tonight,

  1508. he has his

  1509. sword drawn

  1510. in his

  1511. hand,

  1512. he's still

  1513. the commander

  1514. of the

  1515. Lord's

  1516. army,

  1517. he's still

  1518. the one

  1519. who has

  1520. the capacity

  1521. to be

  1522. on your

  1523. side,

  1524. to lead

  1525. you,

  1526. to guide

  1527. you,

  1528. to take

  1529. you through.

  1530. And that's

  1531. the case

  1532. for the

  1533. whole church

  1534. as well.

  1535. One of

  1536. Satan's

  1537. favorite

  1538. devices

  1539. is to

  1540. cause

  1541. discouragement

  1542. and

  1543. disconsolation

  1544. and doubt

  1545. in your

  1546. mind.

  1547. God's

  1548. It was

  1549. like that

  1550. from day

  1551. one when

  1552. he came

  1553. to Eve

  1554. in the

  1555. garden,

  1556. has God

  1557. indeed

  1558. said?

  1559. He wants

  1560. you tonight

  1561. to doubt

  1562. his word.

  1563. He wants

  1564. you tonight

  1565. to doubt

  1566. the validity

  1567. of the

  1568. Sabbath day,

  1569. of the

  1570. Lord's

  1571. day.

  1572. He wants

  1573. you to

  1574. doubt

  1575. whether it's

  1576. profitable

  1577. anymore.

  1578. Does it

  1579. fit into

  1580. the present

  1581. day in

  1582. our society?

  1583. He wants

  1584. you to

  1585. doubt the

  1586. importance

  1587. of actually

  1588. maintaining

  1589. not just

  1590. that but

  1591. every other

  1592. commandment

  1593. in terms

  1594. of your

  1595. moral integrity

  1596. !

  1597. And the

  1598. well-being

  1599. of our

  1600. community

  1601. and our

  1602. people.

  1603. And you

  1604. must look

  1605. to Jesus

  1606. who has

  1607. the sword

  1608. drawn in

  1609. his hand

  1610. ready for

  1611. battle,

  1612. who's always

  1613. prepared,

  1614. who's never

  1615. caught out,

  1616. who's always

  1617. fitted out

  1618. to lead

  1619. his people

  1620. in whatever

  1621. they meet

  1622. with,

  1623. in his

  1624. life.

  1625. And Joshua's

  1626. reaction is

  1627. the reaction

  1628. that shows

  1629. he realized

  1630. this was

  1631. God.

  1632. Joshua's

  1633. response is

  1634. he fell

  1635. on his

  1636. face to

  1637. the earth

  1638. and worshipped

  1639. and said

  1640. to him,

  1641. what does

  1642. my Lord

  1643. say to

  1644. his servant?

  1645. Now Joshua

  1646. would never

  1647. have offered

  1648. worship to

  1649. anyone other

  1650. than God.

  1651. And yet he

  1652. falls down

  1653. before this

  1654. figure and

  1655. worships and

  1656. says, what

  1657. does my

  1658. Lord say to

  1659. his servant?

  1660. an instruction

  1661. then comes

  1662. from this

  1663. figure.

  1664. Take off

  1665. your sandals

  1666. from off

  1667. your feet

  1668. for the

  1669. place where

  1670. you are

  1671. standing is

  1672. holy.

  1673. holy.

  1674. It is an

  1675. amazing thing

  1676. in many

  1677. ways that

  1678. a person

  1679. who comes

  1680. to realize

  1681. the holiness

  1682. of the

  1683. Lord,

  1684. whatever

  1685. measure we're

  1686. able to

  1687. realize and

  1688. appreciate the

  1689. holiness of

  1690. the Lord,

  1691. it doesn't

  1692. actually thwart

  1693. your desire to

  1694. serve him.

  1695. It's the very

  1696. opposite.

  1697. The better you

  1698. know the

  1699. Lord,

  1700. the more we

  1701. appreciate his

  1702. holiness,

  1703. holiness,

  1704. the more we

  1705. come to

  1706. realize that

  1707. this is none

  1708. other than

  1709. the holy

  1710. God,

  1711. our creator,

  1712. and this

  1713. commander of

  1714. the Lord's

  1715. army who's

  1716. here before

  1717. us,

  1718. who actually

  1719. comes to

  1720. bring us

  1721. into his

  1722. presence,

  1723. the more we

  1724. realize the

  1725. immensity of

  1726. God,

  1727. the holiness

  1728. of God,

  1729. the uncreated

  1730. being of

  1731. God,

  1732. the more in

  1733. realizing that

  1734. properly and

  1735. believingly and

  1736. lovingly,

  1737. the more you

  1738. will fall

  1739. down and

  1740. say,

  1741. Lord,

  1742. I'm here,

  1743. send me,

  1744. what will

  1745. you have

  1746. me to

  1747. do?

  1748. What does

  1749. my Lord

  1750. command of

  1751. his servant?

  1752. Let that

  1753. question be

  1754. your question

  1755. tonight.

  1756. Let that

  1757. request be

  1758. your request

  1759. and my

  1760. request.

  1761. The same

  1762. God who

  1763. was there in

  1764. the beginning,

  1765. who created

  1766. all things,

  1767. the God

  1768. who was

  1769. with his

  1770. people,

  1771. Israel,

  1772. at the

  1773. beginning of

  1774. their journey

  1775. from Egypt

  1776. to the

  1777. promised land,

  1778. who was

  1779. with them

  1780. through the

  1781. years of

  1782. the wilderness,

  1783. who was

  1784. actually here

  1785. with them

  1786. as they

  1787. entered the

  1788. promised land,

  1789. that same

  1790. God,

  1791. that's the

  1792. God tonight

  1793. who's seeking

  1794. your response,

  1795. who's looking

  1796. for your

  1797. question in

  1798. your heart,

  1799. Lord,

  1800. what will

  1801. you have

  1802. me to

  1803. do?

  1804. What does

  1805. my Lord

  1806. say to

  1807. his servant?

  1808. And as

  1809. it assures

  1810. Joshua of

  1811. the continuing

  1812. leadership of

  1813. God,

  1814. so Joshua

  1815. falls down

  1816. and worships.

  1817. And he

  1818. hears these

  1819. words,

  1820. take off

  1821. your sandals

  1822. from off

  1823. your feet,

  1824. for the

  1825. place where

  1826. you are

  1827. standing is

  1828. holy.

  1829. That's what

  1830. Moses heard

  1831. at the

  1832. beginning of

  1833. his leadership

  1834. of Israel.

  1835. This is what

  1836. Joshua hears

  1837. in this new

  1838. chapter,

  1839. with all of

  1840. these links

  1841. to the

  1842. past.

  1843. This is what

  1844. you and I

  1845. are hearing

  1846. tonight.

  1847. Many millions

  1848. of people

  1849. tonight in

  1850. our nation

  1851. would ridicule

  1852. you for

  1853. believing in

  1854. God.

  1855. I would

  1856. think you

  1857. are stupid

  1858. for emphasizing

  1859. the holiness

  1860. of someone

  1861. you cannot

  1862. see physically.

  1863. But friends,

  1864. you know

  1865. better than

  1866. that.

  1867. you know

  1868. better than

  1869. to think

  1870. that this

  1871. God is

  1872. just under

  1873. somebody's

  1874. control,

  1875. whatever way

  1876. you want

  1877. him.

  1878. And there

  1879. are people

  1880. who use

  1881. the Bible,

  1882. who use

  1883. Christianity

  1884. for that

  1885. purpose,

  1886. who come

  1887. to turn to

  1888. God at

  1889. certain moments

  1890. in their

  1891. lives,

  1892. who maybe

  1893. cry out to

  1894. God in

  1895. their extremities,

  1896. and then

  1897. when the

  1898. issue is

  1899. gone,

  1900. when things

  1901. have improved,

  1902. God recedes

  1903. into the

  1904. background,

  1905. if he's

  1906. really been

  1907. there

  1908. realistically

  1909. at all.

  1910. Hence,

  1911. let's make

  1912. sure tonight

  1913. we're not

  1914. serving God

  1915. in a way

  1916. that just

  1917. uses him

  1918. for our

  1919. benefit,

  1920. that uses

  1921. him for

  1922. our advantage,

  1923. to gain

  1924. something out

  1925. of the

  1926. moment.

  1927. if you

  1928. worship God,

  1929. you worship

  1930. this God.

  1931. If you

  1932. think of

  1933. God as

  1934. God,

  1935. then this

  1936. is the

  1937. God you

  1938. think of.

  1939. If you

  1940. really want

  1941. to know

  1942. what it

  1943. is to

  1944. serve the

  1945. Lord,

  1946. first of

  1947. all,

  1948. get to

  1949. know him

  1950. in his

  1951. holiness.

  1952. And as

  1953. you get to

  1954. know him

  1955. in his

  1956. holiness,

  1957. respect him

  1958. in all

  1959. his ways.

  1960. And ask

  1961. this question

  1962. each and

  1963. every day,

  1964. Lord,

  1965. what does

  1966. my Lord

  1967. say to

  1968. his servant?

  1969. What can

  1970. I do for

  1971. you today?

  1972. What will

  1973. you have

  1974. me to

  1975. do with

  1976. my life

  1977. today?

  1978. Maybe

  1979. here you're

  1980. tonight here

  1981. and you

  1982. haven't yet

  1983. started following

  1984. the Lord

  1985. for yourself.

  1986. Maybe you

  1987. still don't

  1988. know him

  1989. as your

  1990. own personal

  1991. savior.

  1992. Maybe you're

  1993. hearing these

  1994. words and

  1995. saying,

  1996. I'm,

  1997. I know

  1998. what they're

  1999. saying,

  2000. but I'm

  2001. not sure.

  2002. Should I

  2003. or shouldn't

  2004. I?

  2005. Is he

  2006. for me or

  2007. against me?

  2008. Am I

  2009. for him

  2010. or against

  2011. him?

  2012. Well,

  2013. don't leave

  2014. your mind

  2015. questioning.

  2016. Just do

  2017. what he

  2018. requires.

  2019. Trust in

  2020. him.

  2021. Receive

  2022. him.

  2023. Accept

  2024. him.

  2025. Give

  2026. your mind

  2027. and life

  2028. to him.

  2029. Believe

  2030. his word.

  2031. serve

  2032. him in

  2033. whatever

  2034. way you

  2035. can.

  2036. You

  2037. don't

  2038. have to

  2039. occupy a

  2040. pulpit.

  2041. You

  2042. don't have

  2043. to be

  2044. an elder

  2045. or a

  2046. deacon.

  2047. But in

  2048. some way

  2049. or other

  2050. you do

  2051. need to

  2052. serve him.

  2053. And he

  2054. is calling

  2055. for your

  2056. service

  2057. tonight.

  2058. Lord,

  2059. what will

  2060. you have

  2061. me to

  2062. do?

  2063. Will

  2064. that not

  2065. be your

  2066. question?

  2067. So that

  2068. you also,

  2069. like Joshua

  2070. and the

  2071. people,

  2072. will go

  2073. forward in

  2074. the strength

  2075. of the

  2076. Lord.

  2077. Let's

  2078. pray.

  2079. Lord,

  2080. we continue

  2081. to worship

  2082. you as

  2083. God,

  2084. the

  2085. commander

  2086. of the

  2087. armies

  2088. of the

  2089. Lord.

  2090. And we

  2091. give thanks

  2092. that you

  2093. did come

  2094. into this

  2095. world,

  2096. that you

  2097. fulfilled all

  2098. these times

  2099. of anticipation

  2100. throughout the

  2101. long years of

  2102. the Old

  2103. Testament age.

  2104. We thank

  2105. you,

  2106. Lord,

  2107. that you

  2108. came in

  2109. a way

  2110. that was

  2111. prophesied

  2112. and yet

  2113. in many

  2114. ways

  2115. unexpected,

  2116. that you

  2117. came to

  2118. be born

  2119. into this

  2120. world as

  2121. a human

  2122. infant

  2123. child,

  2124. that you

  2125. developed

  2126. in a

  2127. human body

  2128. and mind

  2129. and soul,

  2130. that you

  2131. came into

  2132. this world

  2133. so that you

  2134. would face

  2135. temptation and

  2136. suffering and

  2137. trial,

  2138. but do so

  2139. in a way

  2140. that overcame.

  2141. We thank

  2142. you that you

  2143. never sinned.

  2144. we thank

  2145. you that you

  2146. overcame

  2147. temptation

  2148. and death

  2149. and the

  2150. devil and

  2151. the world

  2152. and we

  2153. thank you

  2154. tonight that

  2155. you are our

  2156. saviour,

  2157. that you are

  2158. our God,

  2159. that you are

  2160. our commander

  2161. and we pray

  2162. all these

  2163. things,

  2164. O Lord,

  2165. seeking that

  2166. each and

  2167. every day

  2168. it may be

  2169. our delight

  2170. to do

  2171. your will

  2172. as it

  2173. was your

  2174. delight to

  2175. do the

  2176. will of

  2177. the Father.

  2178. Here is

  2179. we pray

  2180. for your

  2181. name's

  2182. sake.

  2183. Amen.

  2184. Let's

  2185. conclude our

  2186. service this

  2187. evening singing

  2188. in Psalm

  2189. 97.

  2190. Psalm 97,

  2191. page 128.

  2192. We're

  2193. singing

  2194. verses 7

  2195. to 12

  2196. to

  2197. Tunis

  2198. Warrington.

  2199. All those

  2200. who worship

  2201. images are

  2202. put to

  2203. everlasting

  2204. shame.

  2205. Their

  2206. worthless

  2207. idols are

  2208. their

  2209. boast.

  2210. You

  2211. gods bow

  2212. down before

  2213. his name.

  2214. All the

  2215. way through

  2216. the Old

  2217. Testament,

  2218. the prophecies,

  2219. but also in

  2220. the Psalms,

  2221. you find

  2222. idolatry

  2223. mentioned so

  2224. frequently because

  2225. the idolatry

  2226. then and

  2227. now is

  2228. idolatry that

  2229. challenges the

  2230. Lord's right

  2231. to rule and

  2232. challenges the

  2233. uniqueness of

  2234. God as

  2235. who alone

  2236. is to be

  2237. worshipped.

  2238. So we'll

  2239. sing these

  2240. verses to

  2241. Tune

  2242. Warrington

  2243. from verse

  2244. 7,

  2245. All those

  2246. who worship

  2247. images.

  2248. are

  2249. good to

  2250. ever

  2251. asking

  2252. shame.

  2253. Their

  2254. worthless

  2255. idols

  2256. are

  2257. their

  2258. holes

  2259. new

  2260. gods

  2261. by

  2262. hand

  2263. before

  2264. his

  2265. name.

  2266. To

  2267. Zion

  2268. and

  2269. Judah

  2270. stand,

  2271. your

  2272. justice

  2273. Lord,

  2274. rejoice

  2275. and

  2276. die.

  2277. love

  2278. of the

  2279. earth

  2280. and

  2281. all

  2282. the

  2283. God

  2284. exalted

  2285. in

  2286. the

  2287. Lord

  2288. whose

  2289. time

  2290. he

  2291. gave

  2292. the

  2293. youth

  2294. who

  2295. loved

  2296. the

  2297. Lord

  2298. who

  2299. stayed

  2300. for

  2301. once

  2302. he

  2303. will

  2304. de

  2305. him

  2306. and

  2307. from

  2308. the

  2309. hands

  2310. of

  2311. wicked

  2312. may

  2313. to

  2314. him

  2315. he

  2316. liberals

  2317. he

  2318. will

  2319. say

  2320. !

  2321. upon

  2322. the

  2323. righteous

  2324. light

  2325. will

  2326. shine

  2327. and

  2328. joy

  2329. of

  2330. those

  2331. of

  2332. our

  2333. life

  2334. who

  2335. righteous

  2336. in

  2337. the

  2338. Lord

  2339. rejoice

  2340. and

  2341. to

  2342. his

  2343. holy

  2344. name

  2345. him

  2346. praise

  2347. I'll go

  2348. to the

  2349. door down

  2350. to my

  2351. right

  2352. this

  2353. evening.

  2354. Now may

  2355. the grace

  2356. of the

  2357. Lord

  2358. Jesus

  2359. Christ

  2360. the love

  2361. of God

  2362. the

  2363. Father

  2364. and the

  2365. communion

  2366. of the

  2367. Holy

  2368. Spirit

  2369. be your

  2370. portion

  2371. now

  2372. and

  2373. ever

  2374. more.

  2375. Amen.
