  10. My heart to me, God, in my heart, where this night of the same.

  11. My soul is poured out in me, when this night of the same.

  19. Trust down my soul, why in this odyssey?

  20. Trust of for I shall precede,

  21. this countenance is my name.

  22. Let's come to God in prayer. Bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  23. Lord, our gracious God, as we gather in your name,

  24. I knew this evening we are thankful for this, your day.

  25. We are thankful to be able to gather together in this way to come,

  26. offering praise to you, beginning with these words that we have sung,

  27. thirsting for your presence, thirsting for you as the psalmist was.

  28. We pray that that would be our longing and desire this evening as we come,

  29. as we come seeking you and come to hear your word,

  30. come to be in your presence and in the fellowship of your people.

  31. We pray that you will give us that thirsting soul and that longing after you.

  32. And we thank you that in the psalm we are reminded too that,

  33. just like the psalmist in his day who lived in a time when there was so much mocking of you,

  34. when people said to him,

  35. where is this God of yours?

  36. And we live in such a day as well and we see so much mocking of you,

  37. when we hear so many people who just put slander across about you,

  38. who make fun of you, who make a joke out of you.

  39. And we thank you that we can come this evening knowing that you are God and there is no other.

  40. And we pray, Lord, for your mercy upon us as we live in these days,

  41. as we see these things around us.

  42. We pray, Lord, that we will have the confidence of the psalmist,

  43. that we will come maybe feeling our souls cast down,

  44. but yet saying, why are we so dismayed when we can trust God and praise you

  45. and that you are our aid at all times,

  46. that you are the one who is our help and our keeper.

  47. And so, Lord, we pray these words this evening.

  48. We pray that they may bring us close to you in our worship,

  49. that they may, from the outset, give us a focus upon you,

  50. that we'll be able to leave aside other distractions

  51. that maybe we even had as we came through these doors this evening

  52. or even as we sat speaking to one another

  53. when there are things that can easily lead our minds away from you.

  54. We pray that you will give us that focus upon you for this time of worship,

  55. that you will give us a prayerful spirit,

  56. that you will help us even now as we unite our hearts in this way,

  57. offering up all our prayers to you,

  58. spoken and unspoken,

  59. prayers that maybe no one else knows,

  60. but you do.

  61. And we thank you that you are the hearer and answerer of prayer.

  62. And we thank you that we can come to you in that way,

  63. that we can come,

  64. even as Jesus himself taught the disciples so long ago,

  65. to come saying,

  66. Our Father, who art in heaven,

  67. we thank you that we can come in that way,

  68. calling upon you in such an intimate and a personal way,

  69. even though you are Lord and God of all,

  70. that we can say,

  71. Our Father, who art in heaven.

  72. And so hear all our prayers

  73. and guide us by your spirit as we seek to worship you.

  74. We might do so in truth,

  75. that we might hear your truth as we read from it

  76. and as we consider it together this evening.

  77. May it be your truth that guides us in life

  78. and keeps us going on.

  79. Your truth that brings us back to the right paths

  80. and helps us to remain on them.

  81. And we pray for the blessing of your spirit

  82. to be on the reading of your word

  83. and all our meditation upon it,

  84. that you will lead us into it in a fresh way,

  85. in a new way,

  86. and that your word would speak to all our hearts.

  87. We are thankful for it,

  88. for all it says to us,

  89. for all we have been reminded about already this day,

  90. of the wonder of your covenant bond with us,

  91. for all that you have done for us

  92. and for all the generations of your people.

  93. As we were reminded of the covenant with Abraham this morning,

  94. we thank you for how we see it out,

  95. worked and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  96. And we pray that this evening,

  97. as we continue to worship you as Lord and God,

  98. that you would continue to remind us

  99. of all the blessings that are ours in Christ

  100. and that we have so much to be thankful for.

  101. So hear our prayers, Lord,

  102. and we pray for so many different needs around us.

  103. We pray for our communities.

  104. We pray for our island.

  105. We pray for our nation and the world in which we live.

  106. We pray for all the different needs.

  107. There are so many, Lord,

  108. and yet none hidden from you.

  109. We thank you for your knowledge of us,

  110. that wonderful knowledge that nothing is beyond your reach,

  111. nothing is beyond your control or power,

  112. but that all things are done by you and for you.

  113. And so we pray, Lord, that you will do good to us,

  114. do good to our people, our congregation here.

  115. May you bless us.

  116. May you guide us.

  117. May you help us.

  118. Every step that we take,

  119. may you guide us by your spirit,

  120. unite our hearts in prayer,

  121. and bless us, Lord, with your presence

  122. and with your peace.

  123. We do pray, Lord,

  124. to see your spirit working in our midst,

  125. thankful for all the promises that we have in your word

  126. that remind us that your word does not return to you empty or void.

  127. And we pray that,

  128. whether it's in the preaching of your word from the pulpit here

  129. or in our prayer meetings,

  130. in our Sunday school and creche and twinnies and Bible class

  131. and all the efforts made to reach out with your gospel,

  132. that you would bless it.

  133. We pray for this week ahead as we think of all that goes on

  134. and as we look ahead, God willing,

  135. to our baptism service next Sunday morning.

  136. We thank you for the privilege of that.

  137. We thank you for the families who will be coming for baptism.

  138. We pray for the parents and the children and all the families,

  139. that your spirit be with them, Lord,

  140. as we prepare for that.

  141. We thank you for the blessings that there is in baptism.

  142. And not just for the ones that we look forward to, God willing,

  143. but as we look back as well,

  144. we thank you for the bonds that there are in baptism as a congregation.

  145. And we remember the many children who have been baptized here

  146. over so many years.

  147. Many now even parents themselves or even grandparents.

  148. We're thankful for the blessings that there are

  149. in that community of your people.

  150. We pray for those who have been committed to you over many years,

  151. who have fulfilled their vows,

  152. who have kept the faith,

  153. who have gone to flourish as Christians.

  154. We thank you for that.

  155. Remember those who are maybe still seeking after you,

  156. maybe even over many years seeking for you

  157. and seeking your peace and your presence.

  158. We pray that you will come and bring that peace to them,

  159. that they will find you as their Lord and as their God.

  160. We remember others maybe who have,

  161. although been baptized,

  162. have wandered away,

  163. who have gone maybe to different parts of the world even,

  164. who have even turned their back on you at a time.

  165. But Lord, we pray that you will remember these vows that were taken,

  166. remember these children as they were baptized,

  167. or even adults as they were baptized,

  168. and draw them to yourself in your time and by your spirit.

  169. And so we do thank you, Lord,

  170. that your eyes are upon us.

  171. We thank you for that,

  172. for our community as well,

  173. and all the different things that are going on.

  174. And we thank you that you are not a God who is sleeping,

  175. not a God who will be mocked,

  176. but that you will come in your power and by your ways.

  177. Remember that as our community needs you.

  178. It needs enriching.

  179. It needs enlivening.

  180. It needs your spirit to work,

  181. that we would see many being drawn to you,

  182. turning from darkness to light.

  183. And so we pray for every endeavor made in your name.

  184. And we pray for our nation, O Lord,

  185. that you would bless us,

  186. that you would guide us,

  187. that you would help us,

  188. even as we think of our government at this time.

  189. And even in this coming week,

  190. when there are many decisions that will be made,

  191. many budgets that will be set,

  192. and we think of the great trials that they face

  193. in terms of leading our nation,

  194. helping our nation.

  195. And we pray, Lord,

  196. for your spirit in the midst of it all,

  197. to give wisdom,

  198. to give guidance,

  199. to give a turning to you.

  200. For we neglect you at our peril.

  201. We turn away from you,

  202. and we see the consequences.

  203. But we thank you that your promise in your word

  204. is that when we return to you,

  205. that you will return to us.

  206. And so, Lord,

  207. may you hear our cries,

  208. may you hear our prayers,

  209. and protect your people.

  210. Protect your people to all ends of the earth,

  211. Lord,

  212. as we thank you for the gospel that goes out to all ends.

  213. We pray that it will be blessed,

  214. and that your people,

  215. near and far,

  216. as they are described as your sheep,

  217. even as we think of it this evening,

  218. we thank you for our shepherd,

  219. the one who is gathering his flock together,

  220. the one who is building his church.

  221. And we pray, Lord,

  222. to see and hear great things

  223. throughout all nations of the world.

  224. So remember us, we pray.

  225. Remember our people.

  226. Remember those in need at this time,

  227. as we remember those in hospital,

  228. both here in Stornoway,

  229. and further afield as well,

  230. those who are going through treatment,

  231. those who have gone through operations,

  232. those who are laid aside at this time.

  233. Lord,

  234. may you be their refuge and their strength.

  235. May you be their ever-present aid.

  236. May you watch over them and all the families

  237. and hear our prayers for them.

  238. So remember us, Lord.

  239. Go before us,

  240. comfort us,

  241. guide us by your Spirit.

  242. Receive our praise

  243. and forgive all our sins

  244. as we come confessing them on you this evening.

  245. You know, Lord, our hearts,

  246. and we pray that you will cleanse us,

  247. that you will renew us,

  248. that you will build us up.

  249. And all we ask,

  250. we ask in the precious name

  251. of our Lord and Saviour,

  252. Jesus Christ,

  253. for his sake and glory.

  254. Amen.

  255. We'll again sing to God's praise.

  256. We're going to sing this time in Psalm 139a,

  257. in the Sing Psalms version.

  258. You'll find this on page 180,

  259. Psalm 139a.

  260. We'll sing from verse 1 down to verse 10.

  261. Psalm speaks of the wonderful knowledge

  262. that God has of his people,

  263. has of us all,

  264. how he knows everything about us.

  265. O Lord,

  266. you have examined me,

  267. you know me through and through.

  268. My sitting,

  269. rising,

  270. all my thoughts

  271. are far

  272. are known to you.

  273. My going out

  274. and lying down

  275. are plain before your view.

  276. Before I speak a word,

  277. O Lord,

  278. it is

  279. well known to you.

  280. We will sing

  281. from verse 1

  282. to verse 10

  283. and the tune is

  284. Saint Andrew.

  285. We stand to sing

  286. to God's praise.

  287. O Lord, you have examined me.

  288. You know me through and through.

  289. My Savior Christ, in all my thoughts,

  290. have found my room to live.

  291. My going out and lying down

  292. are plenty for your good.

  293. Before I speak a word, O Lord,

  294. it is my home to you.

  295. You have been behind before.

  296. You hear only your hand.

  297. Such joy is too wonderful.

  298. To hide, to understand.

  299. Where can I from your spirit flee?

  300. Are proper dresses full?

  301. If doom the heavens dear are there,

  302. or in the necks below.

  303. If I should take the wings of God,

  304. and where are beyond the sea,

  305. there also you who give my guide,

  306. your right and holding me.

  307. Amen.

  308. Amen.

  309. Amen.

  310. Amen.

  311. We'll turn together now to read God's word.

  312. We're reading in the Gospel of John,

    John 10 chapter mention

  313. chapter 10.

  314. Gospel of John, chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  315. We read from the beginning of that chapter

  316. down to verse 21.

  317. John, chapter 10, verse 21.

    John 10:21

  318. John chapter 10, verse 1.

    John 10:1

  319. This passage that speaks of Jesus

  320. and one of the I am sayings in the Gospel of John

  321. where he describes himself as the good shepherd.

  322. I am the good shepherd.

  323. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  324. he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door

  325. but climbs in by another way,

  326. that man is a thief and a robber.

  327. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  328. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  329. The sheep hear his voice,

  330. and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  331. When he has brought out all his own,

  332. he goes before them,

  333. and the sheep follow him,

  334. for they know his voice.

  335. A stranger they will not follow,

  336. but they will flee from him,

  337. for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  338. This figure of speech Jesus used with them,

  339. but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  340. So Jesus again said to them,

  341. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  342. I am the door of the sheep,

  343. and all who come before me are thieves and robbers.

  344. But the sheep did not listen to them.

  345. I am the door.

  346. If anyone enters by me,

  347. he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  348. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  349. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  350. I am the good shepherd.

  351. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  352. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd,

  353. who does not own the sheep,

  354. sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees,

  355. and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

  356. He flees because he is a hired hand

  357. and cares nothing for the sheep.

  358. I am the good shepherd.

  359. I know my own and my own know me,

  360. just as a father knows me and I know the father,

  361. and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  362. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.

  363. I must bring them also,

  364. and they will listen to my voice.

  365. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

  366. For this reason the father loves me,

  367. because I lay down my life,

  368. that I may take it up again.

  369. No one takes it from me,

  370. but I lay it down of my own accord.

  371. I have authority to lay it down,

  372. and I have authority to take it up again.

  373. This charge I have received from my father.

  374. There was again a division among the Jews because of these words.

  375. Many of them said,

  376. He has a demon and is insane.

  377. Why listen to him?

  378. Others said,

  379. These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon.

  380. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

  381. And so on.

  382. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  383. Before we turn back to look at this passage,

  384. we'll again sing to God's praise this time in Psalm 106

  385. in the Scottish Psalter,

  386. singing at the beginning of the Psalm.

  387. Psalm 106 from the beginning,

  388. verse 1 to verse 5,

  389. four stanzas.

  390. The tune is St. David.

  391. Give praise and thanks unto the Lord,

  392. for bountiful is he,

  393. his tender mercy doth endure into eternity.

  394. God's mighty works who can express

  395. or show forth all his praise.

  396. Blessed are they that judgment keep,

  397. and justly do always.

  398. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5

  399. into God's praise we stand to sing.

  400. Amen.

  401. Give freedom and sound to the Lord,

  402. for bounty, cool is he.

  403. His tender mercy doth endure unto eternity.

  404. God's mighty works who can express

  405. our show forth all his praise.

  406. our show forth all his praise.

  407. God's mighty works who can express

  408. our show forth all his praise.

  409. Blessed are they that judgment keep,

  410. and King,

  411. and just

  412. in due

  413. always.

  414. Remember

  415. me,

  416. Lord, with

  417. God above,

  418. which thou

  419. tonight

  420. us bear.

  421. With

  422. thy

  423. salvation,

  424. O

  425. my God,

  426. to visit

  427. thee

  428. for near.

  429. But I

  430. thy

  431. chosen

  432. could

  433. be seen,

  434. and

  435. in their

  436. joy

  437. rejoice,

  438. and

  439. and

  440. be

  441. with

  442. thy

  443. inheritance,

  444. on

  445. cheerful

  446. voice.

  447. As we're

  448. singing in

  449. these verses

  450. in Psalm

  451. 106,

  452. that verse

  453. 4,

  454. there is like

  455. a prayer for

  456. us to offer

  457. up.

  458. Remember me,

  459. Lord, with

  460. that love,

  461. which thou to

  462. thine

  463. dost bear,

  464. with thy

  465. salvation,

  466. O my God,

  467. to visit

  468. me,

  469. throw near.

  470. And sometimes

  471. we can feel

  472. like we're

  473. calling out to

  474. God in

  475. that way.

  476. Remember me,

  477. Lord,

  478. remember me

  479. with that

  480. love which

  481. you show to

  482. your people.

  483. And as we

  484. come to

  485. this passage

  486. this evening

  487. in John

  488. 10,

  489. we are

  490. reminded of

  491. how God

  492. has remembered

  493. us,

  494. and how he

  495. has sent

  496. salvation for

  497. us.

  498. And he has

  499. visited us,

  500. he has drawn

  501. near to us

  502. in the

  503. person of

  504. Jesus Christ,

  505. his son.

  506. And that's

  507. what we see

  508. as we were

  509. thinking as

  510. Gordon was

  511. preaching this

  512. morning on

  513. the reminder

  514. of the

  515. covenant,

  516. God's promise

  517. to us,

  518. and how it

  519. will be

  520. fulfilled in

  521. Christ this

  522. evening.

  523. We're just

  524. kind of

  525. following on

  526. on that

  527. theme and

  528. just seeing

  529. how Jesus

  530. is the

  531. one we

  532. see the

  533. fulfillment

  534. of that

  535. in.

  536. He is the

  537. good shepherd

  538. who has

  539. come for

  540. his people.

  541. We're going

  542. to read at

  543. verse 9 in

  544. John 10,

    John 10:9–11

  545. verse 9 to

  546. 11.

  547. I am the

  548. door.

  549. If anyone

  550. enters by

  551. me, he

  552. will be

  553. saved and

  554. will go

  555. in and

  556. out and

  557. find pasture.

  558. The thief

  559. comes only

  560. to steal

  561. and kill

  562. and destroy.

  563. I came

  564. that they

  565. may have

  566. life and

  567. have it

  568. abundantly.

  569. I am

  570. the good

  571. shepherd.

  572. The good

  573. shepherd lays

  574. down his

  575. life for

  576. the sheep.

  577. The Bible

  578. often describes

  579. the relationship

  580. between God

  581. and his

  582. people in

  583. this way

  584. of using

  585. the image

  586. of the

  587. shepherd

  588. and the

  589. sheep.

  590. We are

  591. described as

  592. people as

  593. being like

  594. sheep and

  595. I don't

  596. know what

  597. that calls

  598. to mind

  599. for you as

  600. you immediately

  601. start to

  602. think.

  603. When you

  604. think of

  605. sheep,

  606. what do

  607. you think

  608. of?

  609. For some

  610. people,

  611. when you

  612. think of

  613. sheep,

  614. it's a

  615. joyous

  616. thing.

  617. If you

  618. love

  619. sheep,

  620. if you

  621. love

  622. looking

  623. after

  624. sheep,

  625. spending

  626. time on

  627. the moor

  628. or gathering

  629. the sheep,

  630. shearing the

  631. sheep,

  632. whatever it

  633. is, it's

  634. a pleasure

  635. for many

  636. people.

  637. For others,

  638. it may be

  639. just a

  640. pain, a

  641. waste of

  642. a good

  643. Saturday,

  644. or just

  645. a time

  646. that's

  647. misspent.

  648. Sheep are

  649. often seen

  650. in these

  651. two different

  652. ways.

  653. But what

  654. characteristics

  655. of sheep

  656. do you see

  657. and you start

  658. to think,

  659. well, I can

  660. understand why

  661. the Bible

  662. describes us

  663. as sheep

  664. and the need

  665. of a shepherd

  666. that we have.

  667. think of

  668. some of the

  669. characteristics

  670. of sheep.

  671. Maybe some

  672. of the more

  673. negative ones

  674. first, they

  675. easily led

  676. astray.

  677. Many will

  678. just follow

  679. after one

  680. or a part

  681. of the flock

  682. and they'll

  683. just go

  684. with them.

  685. It doesn't

  686. matter which

  687. way they're

  688. heading or

  689. what they're

  690. doing.

  691. They're social

  692. creatures.

  693. They like to

  694. be surrounded

  695. by others.

  696. They like to

  697. be part of

  698. a flock.

  699. Again, that

  700. can describe

  701. people.

  702. They can be

  703. wanderers.

  704. They can just

  705. go off on

  706. their own and

  707. just go

  708. astray,

  709. just thinking

  710. the grass

  711. is greener

  712. over there,

  713. that's the

  714. way I'm

  715. going,

  716. and they

  717. wander off

  718. and end

  719. up lost.

  720. They can

  721. be stubborn.

  722. Again, it's

  723. a characteristic

  724. we see in

  725. ourselves so

  726. often.

  727. We see so

  728. many characteristics

  729. in sheep

  730. that remind

  731. us of

  732. ourselves,

  733. but we're

  734. also like

  735. sheep,

  736. defenseless,

  737. we're

  738. vulnerable.

  739. We're all

  740. of these

  741. things.

  742. The list

  743. could go

  744. on and

  745. you could

  746. perhaps add

  747. your own

  748. description.

  749. But what

  750. about valuable

  751. or precious?

  752. Is that

  753. the way

  754. that you

  755. think of

  756. sheep?

  757. Is that

  758. the way

  759. you think

  760. of yourself

  761. as valuable

  762. or precious?

  763. Well, as we

  764. think of these

  765. words of Psalm

  766. 106,

  767. remember me,

  768. Lord,

  769. with that

  770. love which

  771. thou to

  772. thine

  773. dost bear.

  774. The word

  775. of God

  776. reminds us

  777. that we

  778. are indeed

  779. precious.

  780. sheep can

  781. be very

  782. precious.

  783. In

  784. August

  785. 2020

  786. in

  787. Lanark,

  788. just

  789. outside

  790. Glasgow,

  791. there was

  792. a sheep

  793. sale

  794. there.

  795. And on

  796. that day,

  797. a Texel

  798. ram by

  799. the name

  800. Double

  801. Diamond

  802. sold for

  803. a world

  804. record fee.

  805. 368,000

  806. pounds.

  807. A valuable

  808. sheep.

  809. That just

  810. sounds like

  811. madness to

  812. pay that

  813. much money

  814. for a

  815. sheep.

  816. And yet,

  817. when we

  818. think of

  819. that,

  820. we are

  821. reminded of

  822. those sheep

  823. are vulnerable,

  824. they can be

  825. valuable,

  826. and because

  827. they're valuable,

  828. they come

  829. under threat.

  830. There are

  831. those who

  832. want to

  833. steal them.

  834. There are

  835. thieves who

  836. want to

  837. get a hold

  838. of them

  839. so they

  840. can get

  841. money out

  842. of it.

  843. But there

  844. are shepherds

  845. who want

  846. to protect

  847. them.

  848. And as we

  849. think of the

  850. Bible and

  851. how it

  852. describes

  853. sheep,

  854. and the

  855. shepherd in

  856. this way,

  857. we are

  858. reminded of

  859. so many

  860. different things.

  861. But one of

  862. the greatest

  863. images is

  864. when we

  865. find the

  866. sheep who

  867. are going

  868. astray,

  869. the sheep

  870. who are

  871. precious to

  872. the shepherd.

  873. And because

  874. they're so

  875. precious,

  876. the shepherd

  877. will go

  878. out after

  879. his sheep.

  880. And even

  881. to the extent

  882. as we read

  883. of here in

  884. John 10,

  885. the shepherd

  886. who will

  887. give his

  888. life for

  889. the sheep.

  890. Our idea

  891. of sheep

  892. and the

  893. shepherd

  894. and the

  895. way the

  896. Bible

  897. describes the

  898. relationship

  899. of the

  900. sheep and

  901. shepherd

  902. are

  903. probably

  904. poles

  905. apart.

  906. Modern

  907. day

  908. thinking of

  909. as we

  910. would think

  911. of the

  912. shepherd and

  913. the sheep

  914. is very

  915. different to

  916. what Jesus

  917. would be

  918. describing to

  919. the people

  920. here and

  921. what they

  922. would be

  923. understanding

  924. of this

  925. relationship.

  926. You see

  927. just the

  928. kind of

  929. language that

  930. Jesus uses

  931. here in

  932. this passage.

  933. he says

  934. the sheep

  935. hear my

  936. voice.

  937. They

  938. follow me.

  939. Now when

  940. do you

  941. see that

  942. around our

  943. island here?

  944. The sheep

  945. just listen

  946. to the

  947. voice of

  948. the shepherd.

  949. It has

  950. to be a

  951. very good

  952. shepherd who

  953. will just

  954. speak and

  955. the sheep

  956. will follow.

  957. More often

  958. than not,

  959. the shepherd

  960. is behind

  961. the sheep

  962. driving the

  963. sheep.

  964. So often

  965. it's about

  966. the quantity,

  967. a large

  968. quantity of

  969. sheep in

  970. our idea,

  971. whereas in

  972. Jesus'

  973. day it

  974. would be

  975. smaller

  976. numbers.

  977. Every

  978. sheep would

  979. have a

  980. name.

  981. Today we

  982. don't often

  983. see,

  984. although sometimes

  985. you do,

  986. you have a

  987. lamb,

  988. you call it

  989. a name,

  990. you look

  991. after it,

  992. but it

  993. can soon

  994. be forgotten

  995. about,

  996. whereas the

  997. sheep in

  998. Jesus'

  999. day the

  1000. shepherd would

  1001. have them

  1002. perhaps for

  1003. many years

  1004. and know

  1005. each one

  1006. by name

  1007. and be

  1008. able to

  1009. look out

  1010. for them

  1011. and see

  1012. this personal

  1013. and protective

  1014. oversight of

  1015. them.

  1016. And so

  1017. what Jesus

  1018. is talking

  1019. about here

  1020. is a very

  1021. intimate,

  1022. it's a very

  1023. personal

  1024. relationship.

  1025. And you

  1026. see that

  1027. throughout the

  1028. Bible.

  1029. You see it

  1030. in Psalm

  1031. 100,

  1032. when in

  1033. verse 3

  1034. it says,

  1035. no,

  1036. the Lord,

  1037. he is

  1038. God,

  1039. it is he

  1040. who made

  1041. us,

  1042. we are

  1043. his,

  1044. we are

  1045. his people,

  1046. and then

  1047. it describes

  1048. and we are

  1049. the sheep

  1050. of his

  1051. pasture.

  1052. He has

  1053. made us,

  1054. we are

  1055. his people,

  1056. but describes

  1057. the sheep

  1058. of his

  1059. pasture.

  1060. So it's

  1061. a reminder

  1062. that God

  1063. has made

  1064. us in

  1065. that image

  1066. of sheep.

  1067. There's

  1068. a reminder

  1069. of where

  1070. we are

  1071. as sinners

  1072. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 53:6

  1073. 53,

  1074. verse 6,

  1075. it says,

  1076. all we

  1077. like sheep

  1078. have gone

  1079. astray,

  1080. we have

  1081. turned

  1082. everyone

  1083. to his

  1084. own way.

  1085. So we've

  1086. wandered

  1087. off,

  1088. we've

  1089. gone

  1090. away.

  1091. Jesus

  1092. has another

  1093. moment in

  1094. his experience

  1095. when Matthew

    Matthew 9:36

  1096. 9,

  1097. verse 36,

  1098. when he's

  1099. seeing great

  1100. crowds of

  1101. people and

  1102. he has

  1103. compassion on

  1104. them.

  1105. Why does he

  1106. have compassion

  1107. on them?

  1108. It says,

  1109. because they

  1110. were harassed

  1111. and helpless

  1112. like sheep

  1113. without a

  1114. shepherd.

  1115. So you're

  1116. seeing there,

  1117. there's this

  1118. close bond

  1119. between shepherd

  1120. and sheep.

  1121. So the sheep

  1122. who are harassed

  1123. and helpless,

  1124. there's no

  1125. shepherd to look

  1126. after them.

  1127. And that's why

  1128. he has

  1129. compassion,

  1130. like sheep

  1131. without a

  1132. shepherd.

  1133. But then you

  1134. come to

  1135. John 10

  1136. and you

  1137. have this

  1138. wonderful

  1139. passage that

  1140. describes the

  1141. sheep and

  1142. the most

  1143. precious

  1144. shepherd of

  1145. all.

  1146. As you think

  1147. of this in

  1148. light of

  1149. John's

  1150. gospel and

  1151. him talking

  1152. about the

  1153. great I

  1154. am sayings

  1155. and how

  1156. that reminds

  1157. us of how

  1158. God

  1159. remembers his

  1160. people.

  1161. Well here

  1162. we are again

  1163. reminded of

  1164. Jesus as

  1165. the I

  1166. am,

  1167. the I

  1168. am,

  1169. the shepherd

  1170. of the

  1171. sheep.

  1172. The shepherd

  1173. who ultimately

  1174. lays down

  1175. his life

  1176. for his

  1177. sheep because

  1178. that's how

  1179. precious his

  1180. sheep are

  1181. to him.

  1182. We want to

  1183. think of

  1184. three things

  1185. about this

  1186. shepherd this

  1187. evening.

  1188. Three things

  1189. that we see

  1190. of Jesus

  1191. as the

  1192. shepherd of

  1193. his sheep.

  1194. And the

  1195. first is

  1196. his perception,

  1197. his knowledge

  1198. of the

  1199. sheep.

  1200. shepherd.

  1201. The second

  1202. thing is

  1203. his purpose

  1204. as the

  1205. shepherd.

  1206. And then

  1207. thirdly we'll

  1208. see the

  1209. promise and

  1210. protection that

  1211. he gives

  1212. to his

  1213. sheep.

  1214. We'll begin

  1215. by looking

  1216. at his

  1217. perception,

  1218. his knowledge

  1219. of the

  1220. sheep.

  1221. When we

  1222. think of

  1223. ourselves and

  1224. the people

  1225. we have

  1226. around us,

  1227. what kind

  1228. of knowledge

  1229. do you have

  1230. of the people

  1231. around you?

  1232. What kind

  1233. of knowledge

  1234. do you have

  1235. of the people

  1236. sitting next

  1237. to you,

  1238. behind you,

  1239. or in front

  1240. of you?

  1241. It depends

  1242. maybe how

  1243. close you

  1244. are to

  1245. them.

  1246. There'll be

  1247. some who

  1248. are family,

  1249. there'll be

  1250. some who

  1251. are friends,

  1252. there'll be

  1253. maybe some

  1254. who are

  1255. strangers to

  1256. you.

  1257. Our knowledge

  1258. varies depending

  1259. on how much

  1260. we see of

  1261. the people.

  1262. And there

  1263. might be

  1264. some people

  1265. you know

  1266. pretty well.

  1267. You've got to

  1268. know them

  1269. over a long

  1270. period of

  1271. time.

  1272. You know

  1273. their good

  1274. habits,

  1275. their kind

  1276. hearts,

  1277. their generous

  1278. spirit,

  1279. you know

  1280. all of

  1281. these things

  1282. about them.

  1283. And then

  1284. the more

  1285. you get

  1286. to know

  1287. people,

  1288. you also

  1289. see the

  1290. less positive

  1291. side of them,

  1292. the bad

  1293. habits that

  1294. the people

  1295. might have,

  1296. their failings

  1297. as well.

  1298. But it's

  1299. all about

  1300. getting to

  1301. know the

  1302. people.

  1303. And as you

  1304. get to know

  1305. people,

  1306. you realise

  1307. all of

  1308. these things

  1309. about them,

  1310. yet even

  1311. the person

  1312. you know

  1313. best,

  1314. you don't

  1315. know them

  1316. better than

  1317. Jesus does.

  1318. Jesus'

  1319. knowledge of

  1320. his people,

  1321. of his

  1322. sheep,

  1323. is far

  1324. more than

  1325. any of

  1326. us can

  1327. have,

  1328. even we

  1329. could say

  1330. of ourselves,

  1331. that Jesus

  1332. knows us

  1333. better than

  1334. we know

  1335. ourselves.

  1336. And Jesus

  1337. speaks of

  1338. his knowledge

  1339. of his

  1340. sheep here

  1341. in John

  1342. 10.

  1343. He speaks

  1344. of it in

  1345. verse 2

  1346. and 3

  1347. where he

  1348. says,

  1349. He

  1350. knows

  1351. his sheep

  1352. so

  1353. personally.

  1354. He knows

  1355. them that

  1356. just at

  1357. the command

  1358. of his

  1359. voice,

  1360. they will

  1361. follow.

  1362. They will

  1363. follow after

  1364. him.

  1365. You see

  1366. it too

  1367. in verse

  1368. 14.

  1369. I am

  1370. the good

  1371. shepherd.

  1372. I know

  1373. my own

  1374. and my

  1375. own

  1376. know me.

  1377. There's

  1378. this

  1379. relationship

  1380. that's

  1381. about

  1382. knowledge

  1383. of how

  1384. he knows

  1385. his

  1386. sheep.

  1387. What

  1388. kind of

  1389. knowledge

  1390. is this?

  1391. It's

  1392. the kind

  1393. of knowledge

  1394. that the

  1395. psalmist

  1396. speaks of

  1397. in Psalm

  1398. 139.

  1399. The

  1400. knowledge

  1401. that he

  1402. says

  1403. is too

  1404. wonderful

  1405. as he

  1406. describes

  1407. too high

  1408. to

  1409. understand.

  1410. There's

  1411. not a

  1412. word

  1413. that

  1414. comes

  1415. to our

  1416. lips

  1417. that is

  1418. not

  1419. known

  1420. by

  1421. him

  1422. even

  1423. before

  1424. we

  1425. speak

  1426. it.

  1427. Our

  1428. rising,

  1429. our

  1430. sitting,

  1431. our

  1432. sleeping,

  1433. everything

  1434. about us

  1435. it is

  1436. known

  1437. to him.

  1438. The

  1439. psalmist

  1440. describes

  1441. even if

  1442. we

  1443. go to

  1444. the

  1445. utmost

  1446. parts

  1447. of the

  1448. sea,

  1449. even

  1450. there

  1451. your

  1452. right

  1453. hand

  1454. is

  1455. leading

  1456. me.

  1457. There

  1458. is a

  1459. knowledge

  1460. that is

  1461. so

  1462. wonderful,

  1463. so

  1464. personal

  1465. beyond

  1466. anything

  1467. that

  1468. anybody

  1469. else

  1470. has

  1471. of

  1472. us,

  1473. even

  1474. ourselves.

  1475. You

  1476. think of

  1477. a

  1478. relationship

  1479. with your

  1480. parents

  1481. and the

  1482. knowledge

  1483. that they

  1484. have of

  1485. you and

  1486. you have

  1487. of them.

  1488. Think

  1489. back maybe

  1490. when you

  1491. were younger

  1492. or perhaps

  1493. you were at

  1494. that age

  1495. just now

  1496. when you

  1497. would go

  1498. out in

  1499. an evening.

  1500. You would

  1501. go away

  1502. for an

  1503. evening

  1504. and by

  1505. the time

  1506. you come

  1507. home

  1508. it's

  1509. later

  1510. than you

  1511. maybe

  1512. should

  1513. have

  1514. been

  1515. out.

  1516. You're

  1517. trying to

  1518. sneak

  1519. back in.

  1520. You're

  1521. trying to

  1522. sneak

  1523. through

  1524. the front

  1525. door

  1526. and then

  1527. trying to

  1528. sneak

  1529. through

  1530. the inside

  1531. door,

  1532. sneak

  1533. through

  1534. the

  1535. rooms,

  1536. sneak

  1537. up the

  1538. stairs

  1539. into your

  1540. own

  1541. bedroom

  1542. and go

  1543. to sleep

  1544. and you

  1545. think to

  1546. yourself

  1547. I've

  1548. got away

  1549. with it.

  1550. They don't

  1551. know what

  1552. time I

  1553. came in.

  1554. They don't

  1555. know I

  1556. was past

  1557. the time

  1558. I was

  1559. meant to

  1560. come in

  1561. until the

  1562. next morning

  1563. and they

  1564. tell you

  1565. exactly what

  1566. time you

  1567. came in.

  1568. They know.

  1569. They don't

  1570. miss much

  1571. but sometimes

  1572. they do.

  1573. And yet

  1574. the knowledge

  1575. that Jesus

  1576. has of

  1577. us,

  1578. it goes

  1579. way beyond

  1580. even that.

  1581. Everything

  1582. about us,

  1583. every little

  1584. detail.

  1585. When Jesus

  1586. says I

  1587. am the

  1588. door and

  1589. I am

  1590. the shepherd,

  1591. he is

  1592. describing

  1593. this knowledge

  1594. of us,

  1595. that there's

  1596. nothing that

  1597. we do,

  1598. nowhere that

  1599. we go,

  1600. that he

  1601. doesn't

  1602. know.

  1603. And

  1604. describing

  1605. himself as

  1606. the door

  1607. and the

  1608. shepherd,

  1609. it's not

  1610. two different

  1611. things.

  1612. It's the

  1613. same thing.

  1614. The shepherd

  1615. as the

  1616. door and

  1617. just being

  1618. the shepherd

  1619. as the

  1620. shepherd himself,

  1621. they're talking

  1622. about the

  1623. same thing.

  1624. The shepherd

  1625. is the

  1626. door.

  1627. when you

  1628. see here

  1629. Jesus

  1630. talking about

  1631. the sheep

  1632. fold in

  1633. verse 1.

  1634. He says

  1635. later,

  1636. I am the

  1637. door for

  1638. the sheep.

  1639. He's

  1640. describing

  1641. this setting

  1642. where the

  1643. sheep would

  1644. have to

  1645. come in

  1646. and go

  1647. out of.

  1648. A place

  1649. that would

  1650. have

  1651. walls,

  1652. four walls

  1653. and just

  1654. one entry.

  1655. And for

  1656. every sheep

  1657. they had to

  1658. go through

  1659. this entry,

  1660. either coming

  1661. out or

  1662. going in.

  1663. and the

  1664. shepherd

  1665. would be

  1666. the door.

  1667. The sheep

  1668. would have

  1669. to pass

  1670. him,

  1671. either coming

  1672. out or

  1673. going in.

  1674. So he knew

  1675. exactly the

  1676. sheep that he

  1677. had, he knew

  1678. their condition,

  1679. and he knew

  1680. that he had

  1681. them coming

  1682. back in at

  1683. the end of

  1684. the day.

  1685. Nothing

  1686. was missed.

  1687. And that's

  1688. the knowledge

  1689. that Jesus

  1690. has of his

  1691. sheep.

  1692. And us

  1693. as his

  1694. sheep,

  1695. there's nothing

  1696. that passes

  1697. by him.

  1698. And so when

  1699. you think of

  1700. your life,

  1701. there's no

  1702. sneaking past

  1703. Jesus,

  1704. there's no

  1705. thinking,

  1706. I got away

  1707. with that.

  1708. Everything

  1709. is known

  1710. to him.

  1711. This knowledge

  1712. is so

  1713. wonderful,

  1714. it's so

  1715. high,

  1716. it's beyond

  1717. our understanding,

  1718. and yet it

  1719. should give us

  1720. such great

  1721. comfort.

  1722. Because his

  1723. knowledge is

  1724. complete.

  1725. His knowledge

  1726. is past,

  1727. present,

  1728. and future.

  1729. His knowledge

  1730. of us means

  1731. that we are

  1732. watched over

  1733. at all times,

  1734. wherever we

  1735. go.

  1736. And there's a

  1737. great blessing

  1738. in that.

  1739. As we think

  1740. of ourselves,

  1741. as we think

  1742. of others,

  1743. as we think

  1744. even of,

  1745. as we're

  1746. praying there

  1747. for the

  1748. baptism service

  1749. next week,

  1750. God willing,

  1751. as we think

  1752. of baptized

  1753. children,

  1754. as we think

  1755. of those

  1756. who have

  1757. gone away

  1758. from here,

  1759. gone away

  1760. from home,

  1761. that this

  1762. is knowledge

  1763. that Jesus

  1764. has,

  1765. that he is

  1766. watching over

  1767. his sheep,

  1768. that he has

  1769. them as his

  1770. flock watched

  1771. over at all

  1772. times.

  1773. They're coming

  1774. in and they're

  1775. going out.

  1776. And that as

  1777. we pray,

  1778. we can pray

  1779. in that way

  1780. of his

  1781. knowing

  1782. everything

  1783. about us.

  1784. So whatever

  1785. stage we're

  1786. at in life,

  1787. we come

  1788. to the

  1789. shepherd

  1790. looking for

  1791. his help,

  1792. looking for

  1793. his guidance,

  1794. for his

  1795. knowledge to

  1796. be revealed

  1797. to us,

  1798. for his

  1799. help to

  1800. be given

  1801. to us,

  1802. for his

  1803. rod and

  1804. his staff,

  1805. as we'll

  1806. consider later,

  1807. as well as

  1808. directing us in

  1809. every way that

  1810. we should go,

  1811. bringing us

  1812. back or

  1813. putting us

  1814. forward.

  1815. So as we

  1816. think of

  1817. what school

  1818. subjects we

  1819. take,

  1820. as we think

  1821. about moving

  1822. away from

  1823. home to

  1824. university,

  1825. as we think

  1826. of going

  1827. into the

  1828. working life,

  1829. as we think

  1830. of other

  1831. struggles that

  1832. will come

  1833. our way

  1834. through life,

  1835. challenges,

  1836. as we think

  1837. of illness

  1838. and bereavement

  1839. and all of

  1840. these things,

  1841. all the

  1842. struggles that

  1843. we might

  1844. have,

  1845. whatever it

  1846. is,

  1847. he knows.

  1848. His

  1849. knowledge of

  1850. us is so

  1851. complete.

  1852. He is

  1853. the good

  1854. shepherd who

  1855. knows his

  1856. sheep.

  1857. And that

  1858. leads us

  1859. then into

  1860. his purpose.

  1861. His knowledge

  1862. of us is so

  1863. complete, but

  1864. then we begin

  1865. to see his

  1866. purpose.

  1867. Why has

  1868. Jesus come?

  1869. Why did

  1870. God send

  1871. his son into

  1872. this world?

  1873. Well, when you

  1874. think of,

  1875. again, just

  1876. our natural

  1877. setting, when

  1878. you think of

  1879. the lamb

  1880. sails or the

  1881. sheep sails,

  1882. when they

  1883. go ahead,

  1884. buyers will

  1885. come with

  1886. a purpose.

  1887. They come

  1888. for the

  1889. best, they

  1890. come for the

  1891. quality, and

  1892. they come to

  1893. pay good

  1894. money, you

  1895. hope for

  1896. them.

  1897. And you

  1898. see the

  1899. extraordinary

  1900. amounts when

  1901. you think of

  1902. double diamond

  1903. bought for

  1904. 368,000

  1905. pounds.

  1906. Vast

  1907. sums of

  1908. money can

  1909. be spent

  1910. on sheep.

  1911. And how

  1912. does the

  1913. purpose of

  1914. Jesus, the

  1915. good shepherd,

  1916. compare to

  1917. that?

  1918. Did he

  1919. just come

  1920. for the

  1921. best?

  1922. Did he

  1923. come just

  1924. to hand

  1925. pick the

  1926. best for

  1927. himself?

  1928. Imagine

  1929. going to

  1930. a sale and

  1931. coming home

  1932. with sheep

  1933. that were

  1934. old, sheep

  1935. that had no

  1936. teeth, sheep

  1937. that were

  1938. lame or

  1939. blind.

  1940. It would

  1941. seem foolish,

  1942. it would

  1943. seem madness,

  1944. you would be

  1945. asked questions,

  1946. what have you

  1947. done?

  1948. Hope you

  1949. didn't pay

  1950. anything for

  1951. them.

  1952. And if

  1953. you were

  1954. to turn

  1955. around and

  1956. say I

  1957. actually paid

  1958. top money

  1959. for these,

  1960. you would

  1961. be seen

  1962. as being

  1963. crazy.

  1964. It would

  1965. be madness

  1966. to spend

  1967. any money

  1968. on sheep

  1969. that are

  1970. old and

  1971. lame.

  1972. And yet

  1973. when you

  1974. look at the

  1975. scriptures and

  1976. you see the

  1977. relationship of

  1978. the shepherd

  1979. and his

  1980. sheep,

  1981. did he

  1982. come to

  1983. pick the

  1984. best?

  1985. Did he

  1986. come to

  1987. pay only

  1988. the top

  1989. prize for

  1990. those who

  1991. were worthy?

  1992. Did he

  1993. look at

  1994. their

  1995. qualities and

  1996. say that

  1997. one's not

  1998. good enough?

  1999. When you

  2000. read through

  2001. God's word

  2002. you see who

  2003. Jesus came

  2004. for.

  2005. As he

  2006. came for

  2007. his sheep

  2008. he came

  2009. for them

  2010. all.

  2011. Each of

  2012. them sinful,

  2013. lost,

  2014. facing God's

  2015. judgment.

  2016. In order

  2017. for them to

  2018. become his

  2019. sheep,

  2020. Jesus had

  2021. to come

  2022. for his

  2023. sheep.

  2024. And coming

  2025. for his

  2026. sheep,

  2027. that involved

  2028. a great

  2029. price.

  2030. It involved

  2031. a great

  2032. cost.

  2033. The good

  2034. shepherd lays

  2035. down his

  2036. life for

  2037. the sheep.

  2038. He pays

  2039. the ultimate

  2040. price.

  2041. He paid

  2042. for our

  2043. sins.

  2044. And this

  2045. redemption,

  2046. this price

  2047. cost much.

  2048. And yet

  2049. what he

  2050. says is

  2051. my sheep

  2052. they love

  2053. to hear

  2054. my voice.

  2055. My sheep

  2056. they hear

  2057. my voice

  2058. and follow

  2059. me.

  2060. And isn't

  2061. that just a

  2062. wonderful reminder

  2063. to us?

  2064. The purpose

  2065. of Jesus

  2066. is to call

  2067. not the

  2068. perfect,

  2069. not those

  2070. who are

  2071. everything

  2072. sorted,

  2073. but to

  2074. call his

  2075. sheep as

  2076. his own,

  2077. to call

  2078. them by

  2079. their name.

  2080. What kind

  2081. of sheep

  2082. are you?

  2083. Are you a

  2084. perfect

  2085. sheep?

  2086. Prime

  2087. quality,

  2088. top price?

  2089. No.

  2090. There's none

  2091. of us who

  2092. could say

  2093. we're that.

  2094. We're

  2095. straying,

  2096. we're lost,

  2097. we're sinful.

  2098. And yet

  2099. what kind

  2100. of sheep

  2101. did Jesus

  2102. come to

  2103. give his

  2104. life for?

  2105. The very

  2106. sheep that

  2107. we think

  2108. of as

  2109. worthless,

  2110. the lame,

  2111. the blind,

  2112. the sick,

  2113. the ones

  2114. who are

  2115. useless in

  2116. other

  2117. people's

  2118. eyes.

  2119. Jesus

  2120. says that

  2121. himself in

  2122. the Gospel

  2123. of Mark,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  2124. chapter 2,

  2125. the scribes

  2126. and the

  2127. Pharisees

  2128. were around

  2129. and when

  2130. they saw

  2131. him eating

  2132. with sinners

  2133. and tax

  2134. collectors,

  2135. they said

  2136. to his

  2137. disciples,

  2138. why does

  2139. he eat

  2140. with tax

  2141. collectors

  2142. and sinners?

  2143. Why?

  2144. Why does

  2145. he do

  2146. that?

  2147. Well,

  2148. Jesus heard

  2149. it and

  2150. he said

  2151. to them,

  2152. those who

  2153. are well

  2154. have no

  2155. need of

  2156. a physician,

  2157. but those

  2158. who are

  2159. sick.

  2160. I came

  2161. not to

  2162. call the

  2163. righteous,

  2164. but sinners.

  2165. We are

  2166. all sheep

  2167. who have

  2168. gone

  2169. astray.

  2170. We're

  2171. all

  2172. turned

  2173. to our

  2174. own

  2175. way

  2176. and

  2177. that's

  2178. why

  2179. Jesus

  2180. came.

  2181. That's

  2182. his

  2183. purpose.

  2184. We've

  2185. all gone

  2186. astray,

  2187. but he

  2188. came to

  2189. call his

  2190. own

  2191. to himself.

  2192. The

  2193. parable of

  2194. the

  2195. prodigal

  2196. son,

  2197. which comes

  2198. just after

  2199. the parable

  2200. of the

  2201. lost

  2202. sheep

  2203. who

  2204. left

  2205. the 99

  2206. to go

  2207. out after

  2208. the one

  2209. sheep

  2210. who was

  2211. missing.

  2212. The

  2213. prodigal

  2214. son is

  2215. along the

  2216. same

  2217. lines.

  2218. When the

  2219. prodigal

  2220. son goes

  2221. away,

  2222. wanders

  2223. off into

  2224. his sinful

  2225. life,

  2226. fulfills it

  2227. the way

  2228. he would

  2229. see best,

  2230. and then

  2231. realizes how

  2232. empty it

  2233. is.

  2234. And when

  2235. he comes

  2236. to his

  2237. senses,

  2238. he says,

  2239. I will

  2240. return to

  2241. my father.

  2242. And there's

  2243. that part

  2244. in Luke

    Luke 15:20

  2245. 15,

  2246. verse 20,

  2247. where it

  2248. says,

  2249. the father

  2250. ran out

  2251. to meet

  2252. him and

  2253. embraced

  2254. him.

  2255. Another

  2256. word of

  2257. translation

  2258. there for

  2259. embrace is

  2260. he fell

  2261. upon him.

  2262. You think

  2263. to yourself,

  2264. what's the

  2265. significance

  2266. there?

  2267. Why fall

  2268. upon him

  2269. in this

  2270. way?

  2271. Well,

  2272. if you go

  2273. back to

  2274. the Old

  2275. Testament

  2276. and to

  2277. 21,

  2278. verse 18

  2279. to 21

  2280. there,

  2281. it speaks

  2282. about what

  2283. people were

  2284. instructed to

  2285. do to

  2286. a child

  2287. who had

  2288. disobeyed

  2289. and dishonored

  2290. his parents.

  2291. What was

  2292. the price

  2293. that was

  2294. paid?

  2295. Well,

  2296. they were

  2297. instructed

  2298. to stone

  2299. that child.

  2300. Sounds

  2301. so awful,

  2302. sounds so

  2303. cruel,

  2304. that they

  2305. would put

  2306. that child

  2307. to death

  2308. for disobeying

  2309. their parents

  2310. and dishonoring

  2311. their parents.

  2312. But if you

  2313. see that

  2314. version and

  2315. you see

  2316. the prodigal

  2317. son,

  2318. you realize

  2319. just how

  2320. significant

  2321. that embrace

  2322. and that

  2323. falling upon

  2324. him is.

  2325. Because what

  2326. the father

  2327. was doing

  2328. was knowing

  2329. what the

  2330. people would

  2331. be commanded

  2332. to do for

  2333. that son

  2334. who had

  2335. dishonored

  2336. him.

  2337. He fell

  2338. upon them,

  2339. upon his

  2340. son,

  2341. he embraced

  2342. him to

  2343. protect him.

  2344. So they

  2345. wouldn't

  2346. harm him,

  2347. so they

  2348. wouldn't

  2349. touch him.

  2350. And that's

  2351. exactly what

  2352. Jesus is

  2353. doing here

  2354. for his

  2355. sheep.

  2356. I am

  2357. the good

  2358. shepherd,

  2359. the good

  2360. shepherd who

  2361. lays down

  2362. his life

  2363. for his

  2364. sheep.

  2365. So I

  2366. would put

  2367. that into

  2368. the same

  2369. way,

  2370. who lays

  2371. down upon

  2372. his sheep,

  2373. who protects

  2374. his sheep.

  2375. They

  2376. deserve to

  2377. die,

  2378. but he

  2379. took our

  2380. sin.

  2381. And he

  2382. took out

  2383. our sin

  2384. that we

  2385. might have

  2386. life and

  2387. have it

  2388. abundantly,

  2389. as is

  2390. described here,

  2391. that they

  2392. might have

  2393. life and

  2394. have it

  2395. abundantly.

  2396. So his

  2397. purpose was

  2398. to save

  2399. his sheep.

  2400. He knows

  2401. his sheep,

  2402. he knows

  2403. their sin,

  2404. but his

  2405. purpose is

  2406. that he

  2407. might save

  2408. his sheep

  2409. from their

  2410. sins,

  2411. and that

  2412. we might

  2413. have life

  2414. abundantly.

  2415. And the

  2416. third and

  2417. final thing

  2418. we see

  2419. here is

  2420. his promise

  2421. and protection.

  2422. There are

  2423. many things

  2424. calling for

  2425. our attention

  2426. in life,

  2427. many things

  2428. that lead us

  2429. in different

  2430. directions.

  2431. And you

  2432. think of

  2433. Isaiah,

  2434. he knew

  2435. so well as

  2436. he was

  2437. describing

  2438. there,

  2439. all we

  2440. like sheep

  2441. have gone

  2442. as they,

  2443. we have

  2444. turned each

  2445. to his

  2446. own way.

  2447. We wander

  2448. off,

  2449. we listen

  2450. to the

  2451. wrong voices,

  2452. we listen

  2453. to the

  2454. wrong things,

  2455. we go

  2456. in our

  2457. different

  2458. directions.

  2459. But as

  2460. Jesus

  2461. describes

  2462. himself

  2463. here as

  2464. the good

  2465. shepherd,

  2466. he's

  2467. describing

  2468. himself

  2469. in light

  2470. of the

  2471. thief as

  2472. well in

  2473. verse 10.

  2474. The thief

  2475. comes only

  2476. to steal

  2477. and kill

  2478. and destroy.

  2479. I came

  2480. that they

  2481. may have

  2482. life and

  2483. have it

  2484. abundantly.

  2485. And what

  2486. he's saying

  2487. here is

  2488. there's

  2489. the two

  2490. different

  2491. outcomes

  2492. depending

  2493. on whose

  2494. voice that

  2495. we listen

  2496. to.

  2497. Do we

  2498. listen to

  2499. the thief?

  2500. Do we

  2501. listen to

  2502. the devil?

  2503. Do we

  2504. listen to

  2505. his wiles

  2506. of forgetting

  2507. God?

  2508. Even like

  2509. the psalm

  2510. in which

  2511. we're singing,

  2512. Psalm 42,

  2513. when we

  2514. see so many

  2515. people saying,

  2516. when is

  2517. this God

  2518. of yours?

  2519. is that

  2520. what we

  2521. listen to?

  2522. Is that

  2523. the voices

  2524. that we

  2525. heed and

  2526. say,

  2527. well,

  2528. maybe there

  2529. isn't a

  2530. God.

  2531. Maybe we

  2532. shouldn't

  2533. listen to

  2534. what the

  2535. Bible

  2536. says.

  2537. Maybe it

  2538. is just

  2539. something to

  2540. be forgotten

  2541. about.

  2542. Well,

  2543. we are

  2544. reminded here

  2545. the thief

  2546. comes only

  2547. to steal

  2548. and kill

  2549. and destroy.

  2550. There's no

  2551. other purpose.

  2552. but Jesus

  2553. has come.

  2554. I came

  2555. that they

  2556. may have

  2557. life and

  2558. have it

  2559. abundantly.

  2560. I am the

  2561. good shepherd.

  2562. The good

  2563. shepherd lays

  2564. down his

  2565. life for

  2566. his sheep.

  2567. The thief

  2568. has a

  2569. purpose,

  2570. but there's

  2571. nothing good

  2572. about it.

  2573. It's a bit

  2574. like the

  2575. shepherd that

  2576. we see

  2577. described in

  2578. the Old

  2579. Testament

  2580. in Ezekiel

  2581. as well,

  2582. where the

  2583. Lord warns

  2584. in Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 34:2

  2585. 34,

  2586. verse 2,

  2587. Woe to

  2588. the shepherds

  2589. of Israel

  2590. who only

  2591. take care

  2592. of themselves.

  2593. Should not

  2594. shepherds

  2595. take care

  2596. of the

  2597. flock?

  2598. They're only

  2599. interested in

  2600. themselves,

  2601. so impersonal,

  2602. so selfish.

  2603. They come

  2604. only to

  2605. steal and

  2606. kill and

  2607. destroy.

  2608. And listen

  2609. to that

  2610. voice,

  2611. and that's

  2612. where we

  2613. end up

  2614. ourselves.

  2615. So there

  2616. is that

  2617. warning to

  2618. us.

  2619. But contrast

  2620. that to the

  2621. leading of

  2622. the shepherd,

  2623. the good

  2624. shepherd,

  2625. the good

  2626. shepherd who

  2627. lays down

  2628. his life

  2629. for his

  2630. sheep,

  2631. the good

  2632. shepherd who

  2633. knows his

  2634. sheep,

  2635. the good

  2636. shepherd who

  2637. has done

  2638. everything for

  2639. his sheep.

  2640. So we'll be

  2641. singing in

  2642. conclusion in

  2643. a few moments

  2644. Psalm 23.

  2645. that great

  2646. psalm just

  2647. reminds us of

  2648. the leading

  2649. of the

  2650. shepherd through

  2651. every experience

  2652. in life.

  2653. And his

  2654. tender leading,

  2655. his care

  2656. towards his

  2657. own.

  2658. And when you

  2659. think of the

  2660. rod and the

  2661. staff as

  2662. described in

  2663. that psalm,

  2664. and as you

  2665. read about it

  2666. in light of

  2667. other scripture

  2668. passages, you

  2669. see that these

  2670. were the key

  2671. things that the

  2672. shepherd would

  2673. use to help

  2674. the sheep

  2675. along the

  2676. way.

  2677. The rod was

  2678. probably shorter

  2679. and used

  2680. more closely

  2681. to prod the

  2682. sheep, to

  2683. put them in

  2684. the right

  2685. direction, to

  2686. move them

  2687. along the

  2688. way.

  2689. The staff

  2690. was longer

  2691. with the

  2692. crook at

  2693. the top so

  2694. the shepherd

  2695. could pull

  2696. the sheep

  2697. back.

  2698. And again,

  2699. it's just that

  2700. reminder of

  2701. the way we

  2702. are.

  2703. Sometimes we

  2704. just need the

  2705. prod in the

  2706. right direction,

  2707. just gently

  2708. kept on the

  2709. right path.

  2710. Other times,

  2711. we need a

  2712. good pull

  2713. back onto

  2714. the right

  2715. path.

  2716. But there

  2717. was another

  2718. purpose of

  2719. the rod and

  2720. the staff as

  2721. well, maybe

  2722. more so the

  2723. staff.

  2724. And it

  2725. reminds us of

  2726. just how

  2727. personal the

  2728. care of the

  2729. shepherd is,

  2730. of his promise

  2731. and protection

  2732. to his

  2733. sheep.

  2734. And what it

  2735. was, was as

  2736. the sheep were

  2737. being brought

  2738. in at the

  2739. end of the

  2740. day, the

  2741. shepherd would

  2742. lay the

  2743. staff across

  2744. the entrance

  2745. into the

  2746. sheepfold.

  2747. And the

  2748. sheep would

  2749. stop, each

  2750. one, one

  2751. at a time.

  2752. And the

  2753. shepherd would

  2754. look over

  2755. the sheep

  2756. and make

  2757. sure that

  2758. sheep was

  2759. well, that

  2760. everything about

  2761. that sheep

  2762. was right, that

  2763. it hadn't been

  2764. injured, that

  2765. it wasn't

  2766. lame, that

  2767. nothing had

  2768. come upon it

  2769. during the

  2770. day, no

  2771. injury.

  2772. And if

  2773. the sheep

  2774. was fine, he

  2775. would lift

  2776. up the

  2777. staff and

  2778. let the

  2779. sheep in, and

  2780. the next

  2781. one would

  2782. stop.

  2783. And when

  2784. you think of

  2785. that in

  2786. light of

  2787. Psalm 23,

  2788. and especially

  2789. when you think

  2790. of the last

  2791. words of

  2792. Psalm 23,

  2793. goodness and

  2794. mercy, all

  2795. my life, so

  2796. surely follow

  2797. me, and

  2798. in God's

  2799. house forevermore

  2800. my dwelling

  2801. place shall

  2802. be.

  2803. You think

  2804. just of the

  2805. care of the

  2806. shepherd.

  2807. How he's

  2808. going to

  2809. look over

  2810. all his

  2811. sheep, and

  2812. how he's

  2813. going to

  2814. heal every

  2815. hurt and

  2816. every wound.

  2817. Why is

  2818. that important?

  2819. Well, again,

  2820. when you go

  2821. back to

  2822. Ezekiel, in

  2823. chapter 20,

  2824. verse 37, it

  2825. says, I

  2826. will make you

  2827. pass under

  2828. the rod.

  2829. I will

  2830. bring you

  2831. into the

  2832. bond of

  2833. the covenant.

  2834. I will

  2835. purge out

  2836. the rebels

  2837. from among

  2838. you.

  2839. And those

  2840. who transgress

  2841. against me.

  2842. And there's

  2843. a description

  2844. there of

  2845. the care and

  2846. concern of

  2847. the shepherd.

  2848. Only his

  2849. own will

  2850. get in.

  2851. He will

  2852. allow his

  2853. own to

  2854. pass under

  2855. the rod,

  2856. but not

  2857. those who

  2858. have no

  2859. place there.

  2860. The good

  2861. shepherd cares

  2862. for his

  2863. sheep.

  2864. He will

  2865. heal his

  2866. sheep.

  2867. He will

  2868. look after

  2869. his sheep.

  2870. So there

  2871. is that

  2872. care now

  2873. and there

  2874. is that

  2875. care

  2876. eternally.

  2877. That the

  2878. hope of the

  2879. Christian is

  2880. just that,

  2881. the promise

  2882. and the

  2883. protection

  2884. of Christ

  2885. as our

  2886. shepherd.

  2887. He knows

  2888. his sheep

  2889. and his

  2890. purpose for

  2891. his sheep

  2892. was that

  2893. he would

  2894. come and

  2895. lay down

  2896. his life

  2897. for his

  2898. sheep.

  2899. That we

  2900. might have

  2901. life abundantly

  2902. in him.

  2903. His healing

  2904. touch,

  2905. his caring

  2906. touch,

  2907. his restoration

  2908. of his

  2909. sheep.

  2910. Well,

  2911. do you

  2912. know

  2913. God

  2914. as your

  2915. shepherd

  2916. today?

  2917. Do you

  2918. know

  2919. the good

  2920. shepherd?

  2921. And can

  2922. you say

  2923. the Lord

  2924. is my

  2925. shepherd?

  2926. For some

  2927. of us,

  2928. the call

  2929. tonight

  2930. is come.

  2931. Come to

  2932. me and

  2933. I will

  2934. save you.

  2935. Hear my

  2936. voice,

  2937. and follow

  2938. me.

  2939. Perhaps

  2940. that's you

  2941. this evening.

  2942. You're

  2943. hearing the

  2944. shepherd

  2945. calling.

  2946. It's time

  2947. to follow.

  2948. And for

  2949. others,

  2950. he's saying

  2951. stay with

  2952. me.

  2953. I will

  2954. guard you.

  2955. There's so

  2956. often we're

  2957. tempted to

  2958. drift off

  2959. and go

  2960. our own

  2961. direction,

  2962. to wander

  2963. away,

  2964. for doubts

  2965. to come in,

  2966. but he's

  2967. saying stay

  2968. with me.

  2969. I will

  2970. keep you.

  2971. I will

  2972. watch over

  2973. you.

  2974. I will

  2975. care for

  2976. you.

  2977. I will

  2978. heal you.

  2979. And each

  2980. of us

  2981. knows

  2982. which voice

  2983. to listen

  2984. to.

  2985. My sheep

  2986. hear my

  2987. voice

  2988. and follow

  2989. me.

  2990. The call

  2991. is

  2992. to follow

  2993. him.

  2994. remember

  2995. double

  2996. diamond,

  2997. the

  2998. texel

  2999. ram,

  3000. sold for

  3001. 368,000.

  3002. Well,

  3003. you're even

  3004. more precious.

  3005. You're worth

  3006. far more

  3007. than that

  3008. to the

  3009. shepherd of

  3010. his sheep

  3011. who has

  3012. given his

  3013. life for

  3014. you.

  3015. Let's not

  3016. be stubborn.

  3017. Let's not

  3018. turn away

  3019. and go our

  3020. own way.

  3021. let us

  3022. listen to

  3023. the voice

  3024. of the

  3025. shepherd

  3026. and follow

  3027. him.

  3028. Let us

  3029. pray.

  3030. Our

  3031. Father in

  3032. heaven,

  3033. we thank

  3034. you that

  3035. you are

  3036. the shepherd

  3037. who calls

  3038. and give us

  3039. ears to hear

  3040. and to

  3041. follow,

  3042. to listen

  3043. to your

  3044. voice and

  3045. not to

  3046. those who

  3047. would seek

  3048. to kill

  3049. and destroy,

  3050. but to

  3051. seek to

  3052. listen to

  3053. the one

  3054. who has

  3055. come that

  3056. we might

  3057. have life

  3058. and have

  3059. it abundantly.

  3060. Teach us,

  3061. Lord,

  3062. your ways

  3063. and lead

  3064. us in

  3065. them.

  3066. So we

  3067. ask it

  3068. all in

  3069. your

  3070. precious

  3071. name.

  3072. Amen.

  3073. We're

  3074. going to

  3075. conclude by

  3076. singing these

  3077. words of

  3078. Psalm 23

  3079. and the

  3080. Sing

  3081. Psalms

  3082. version.

  3083. Page

  3084. 28 of

  3085. the

  3086. Psalm

  3087. book.

  3088. The

  3089. tune is

  3090. Jehovah's

  3091. and

  3092. Kenyu.

  3093. Psalm

  3094. 23.

  3095. The

  3096. Lord is

  3097. my

  3098. shepherd,

  3099. no one

  3100. shall I

  3101. know.

  3102. He

  3103. makes me

  3104. lie

  3105. down

  3106. where

  3107. the

  3108. green

  3109. pastures

  3110. grow.

  3111. He

  3112. leads

  3113. me

  3114. to

  3115. rest

  3116. with

  3117. the

  3118. calm

  3119. waters

  3120. flow.

  3121. We'll

  3122. sing the

  3123. whole of

  3124. this

  3125. Psalm

  3126. and we

  3127. stand

  3128. to

  3129. sing.

  3130. The

  3131. Lord is

  3132. my

  3133. shepherd,

  3134. no one

  3135. shall I

  3136. know.

  3137. He

  3138. makes me

  3139. lie

  3140. down

  3141. where

  3142. the

  3143. green

  3144. master's

  3145. grow.

  3146. He

  3147. leads

  3148. me

  3149. to

  3150. rest

  3151. where

  3152. the

  3153. waters

  3154. flow.

  3155. He

  3156. leads

  3157. me

  3158. to

  3159. rest

  3160. where

  3161. the

  3162. waters

  3163. flow.

  3164. My

  3165. wandering

  3166. steps

  3167. he

  3168. brings

  3169. back

  3170. to this

  3171. day.

  3172. He

  3173. has

  3174. done

  3175. his

  3176. great name

  3177. to

  3178. display.

  3179. He

  3180. has

  3181. done

  3182. his

  3183. great name

  3184. to

  3185. display.

  3186. He

  3187. has

  3188. done

  3189. his

  3190. great name

  3191. to

  3192. display.

  3193. !

  3194. Lord,

  3195. !

  3196. walk

  3197. in

  3198. des

  3199. paris

  3200. where

  3201. darkness

  3202. is near.

  3203. Because

  3204. you are

  3205. with me,

  3206. no evil

  3207. I'll

  3208. fear.

  3209. Your

  3210. rod and

  3211. your

  3212. suffering

  3213. become

  3214. heart and

  3215. cheer.

  3216. cheer.

  3217. Your

  3218. heart and

  3219. your

  3220. suffering

  3221. become

  3222. heart and

  3223. cheer.

  3224. In the

  3225. sight of

  3226. my

  3227. enemies

  3228. the

  3229. table

  3230. you

  3231. spread.

  3232. In

  3233. oil of

  3234. rejoicing

  3235. you

  3236. pour on

  3237. my

  3238. head.

  3239. my

  3240. cup

  3241. overclose

  3242. and

  3243. I'm

  3244. gracious

  3245. me

  3246. fed.

  3247. My

  3248. cup

  3249. overclose

  3250. and

  3251. I'm

  3252. gracious

  3253. me

  3254. fed.

  3255. So

  3256. cheer

  3257. in your

  3258. covenant

  3259. and

  3260. mercy

  3261. and

  3262. grace

  3263. will

  3264. follow

  3265. me

  3266. close

  3267. me

  3268. in

  3269. all

  3270. of

  3271. my

  3272. ways.

  3273. I

  3274. will

  3275. dwell

  3276. in

  3277. the

  3278. hands

  3279. of

  3280. the

  3281. Lord

  3282. all

  3283. my

  3284. days.

  3285. I

  3286. will

  3287. dwell

  3288. in

  3289. the

  3290. hands

  3291. of

  3292. the

  3293. Lord

  3294. all

  3295. my

  3296. days.

  3297. After

  3298. the

  3299. benediction

  3300. I'll go to

  3301. the door

  3302. to my

  3303. left.

  3304. We'll

  3305. close

  3306. with

  3307. the

  3308. benediction.

  3309. Now may

  3310. grace,

  3311. mercy and

  3312. peace from

  3313. God,

  3314. Father,

  3315. Son and

  3316. Holy Spirit

  3317. rest upon

  3318. and abide

  3319. with you

  3320. all now

  3321. and forever

  3322. more.

  3323. Amen.

  3324. Amen.

  3325. Amen.

  3326. Amen.
