  1. We're going to begin our worship just now by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing from Psalm 92 in the Scottish Psalter, Psalm 92, verse 1 to verse 6.

    Psalms 92:1

  3. ! We're going to sing this to the tune, The Bays of Harris.

  4. We're coming with thanksgiving to God, and it says here,

  5. To render thanks unto the Lord, it is a comely thing.

  6. And to thy name, O thou, most high, do you praise aloud to sing.

  7. Thy lovingkindness to show forth when shines the morning light.

  8. And to declare thy faithfulness with pleasure every night.

  9. We'll stand to sing from verse 1 to 6 to God's praise.

  10. To render thanks unto the Lord, it is a comely thing.

  11. And to thy name, O thou, most high, do you praise aloud to sing.

  12. Thy lovingkindness to show forth when shines the morning light.

  13. And to declare thy faithfulness with pleasure every night.

  14. On Athens' ringed instrument upon the psaltery.

  15. And on the harp with solemn sound and great sweet melody.

  16. For thy Lord, by thy mighty words,

  17. Has made my heart bright glad.

  18. And I will triumphed in the works which by thy hands were made.

  19. How great Lord, by thy words,

  20. Each thought of thine, the deep it is.

  21. A British man, it knoweth not,

  22. Those understand not this.

  23. When those land good and wicked have,

  24. Spring quickly up like grass,

  25. And work our children,

  26. And work our children iniquity,

  27. To flourish all our peace.

  28. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  29. Let us pray.

  30. Our gracious Lord,

  31. We thank you for this day.

  32. We thank you to be able to come,

  33. Acknowledging thanksgiving to you anew.

  34. We thank you that there is this day set aside for that purpose of thanksgiving.

  35. For a particular reason,

  36. For every good and perfect gift is from above,

  37. As your word reminds us.

  38. And we are thankful that as we look back over this year,

  39. We can see the provision that you have made for us,

  40. In so many different ways.

  41. Practically Lord,

  42. The food on our tables,

  43. The water,

  44. The warmth of our homes,

  45. All that we enjoy,

  46. And so often take for granted,

  47. Lord,

  48. We thank you for every provision you make for us.

  49. But above all,

  50. We thank you for the promise of your constant companionship with us.

  51. That you are the one that we are to look to,

  52. The one that we are to give thanks to for all these things.

  53. And today,

  54. May you help us to be truly thankful for all that is ours,

  55. And especially all that is ours through Jesus Christ as our Lord.

  56. We pray that you will bless your word to us today,

  57. Bless us together as a people here,

  58. In all our homes and our families and our communities,

  59. Lord,

  60. We ask that you will be near to us,

  61. Helping us,

  62. Lord,

  63. With all our different needs.

  64. We just ask for your spirit to be with us,

  65. To lead us and to guide us in all of these things,

  66. That you would lead us into your word and into your truth,

  67. That it would speak to us,

  68. And remind us,

  69. Lord,

  70. Of all the reasons that we have,

  71. To look back and give thanks,

  72. To look at our present and give thanks,

  73. And to look to the future,

  74. And asking your blessing on all the days that lie ahead of us.

  75. So continue with us,

  76. Lord,

  77. We pray,

  78. Bless us and keep us and pardon us,

  79. And as we ask all these things in Jesus' precious name.

  80. Amen.

  81. Just a wee word to the young ones.

  82. Some of you may be going out to the holiday tweenies in a minute,

  83. But if not,

  84. You'll be staying in the service as well.

  85. It's good to have you here.

  86. I know it's holiday weekend,

  87. So there's a number of people traveling away as well.

  88. Those who have been able to get away because of the ferries not sailing

  89. And things like that,

  90. The different weather situations,

  91. It's been hard for many people.

  92. And sometimes when we're coming to give thanks to God,

  93. It can seem quite strange to give thanks when there's so many things going on

  94. That are maybe wrong in the world,

  95. Or sad in the world,

  96. Or making us feel as if things just aren't going our way.

  97. But that's why it's so important for us to come to God's word,

  98. And to read God's word together,

  99. And to remind ourselves that God is so precious to us.

  100. And that when we have him,

  101. We have so much to be thankful for.

  102. A couple of weeks ago,

  103. There was a partial that came to the manse.

  104. It wasn't a big partial,

  105. It was a box,

  106. That wide,

  107. Not very deep.

  108. And on the front of the box,

  109. It said flowers.

  110. So it was a flower delivery.

  111. Now if you're used to getting flower deliveries to your house,

  112. Maybe some of you are,

  113. You get flowers,

  114. They come,

  115. But very often they'll come maybe in a big bouquet,

  116. So you can see them immediately.

  117. But this was a box,

  118. And it said flowers.

  119. You think,

  120. It doesn't look very big.

  121. What's going to be inside this box?

  122. And the box was opened,

  123. The box wasn't for me,

  124. But the person it was for,

  125. They opened the box,

  126. And inside was a bunch of flowers.

  127. And first reactions to think,

  128. The flowers are dead.

  129. They just looked as if they had died.

  130. They just looked as if they were withering away in this box.

  131. And you're thinking,

  132. Oh man,

  133. The poor person who sent this,

  134. We're going to have to tell them that the flowers were dead when they arrived.

  135. And we could have easily just maybe thrown the box out and thought,

  136. Well, these flowers are just died.

  137. They're rubbish.

  138. We'll just put them in the bin.

  139. But on the box was instructions.

  140. And it said on the box that,

  141. Though you might think the flowers look dead,

  142. They're not.

  143. What you have to do is you have to feed them.

  144. And there was instructions of how to feed them in different ways.

  145. There was three stages as to how to feed the flowers.

  146. And so the flowers,

  147. Although they looked as if they were wilting,

  148. They were put in a vase and given this feed.

  149. And over time, the flowers came to life.

  150. They bloomed and they're still in our kitchen now.

  151. Still flowering there in the kitchen.

  152. And what made the difference was reading the instructions and doing what the instructions say.

  153. And that's what it is like giving thanks at times as well.

  154. We might look on things and think,

  155. Well, there's so much around us that's sad.

  156. There's so much going on.

  157. And we think,

  158. What reason do we have to give thanks?

  159. We have to give thanks.

  160. But then when we read the instructions,

  161. When we read God's word,

  162. We realize as we go through God's word,

  163. We have so many things to give thanks for.

  164. That there are times when everything seems to be withering and perishing away.

  165. But that God is able to give life.

  166. And that as we hear what he's saying to us,

  167. As we follow his instructions,

  168. He is the one who gives life even into the saddest of situations.

  169. And we are able to give thanks to him,

  170. That he remembers us,

  171. That he is with us.

  172. And that is his promise always.

  173. So we take heart in the midst of everything else that goes on.

  174. Some things will be sad and hard for us.

  175. But we have the Lord with us.

  176. And we do have so much to give thanks for.

  177. So may our hearts truly be thankful to God today,

  178. For all that he does for us.

  179. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  180. Our Father which art in heaven,

  181. Hallowed be thy name.

  182. Thy kingdom come.

  183. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  184. Give us this day our daily bread,

  185. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  186. And lead us not into temptation,

  187. But deliver us from evil.

  188. For thine is the kingdom,

  189. The power and the glory forever.

  190. Amen.

  191. We're going to sing again to God's praise this time in Psalm 105,

  192. The Scottish Psalter version,

  193. Page 374.

  194. Psalm 105,

  195. Page 374.

  196. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  197. And the tune is Peter's Ham.

  198. If there are any young ones going out to the holiday twenties,

  199. You can do that during the singing.

  200. Just as usual,

  201. Coming out the door to my left here.

  202. Psalm 105 at verse 1,

  203. Give thanks to God,

  204. Call on his name,

  205. To men his deeds make known.

  206. Sing ye to him,

  207. Sing psalms,

  208. Proclaim his wondrous works.

  209. Each one.

  210. We'll stand to sing the Psalm,

  211. Verse 1 to 7,

  212. To God's praise.

  213. Please,

  214. Please,

  215. Please,

  216. Please,

  217. Please,

  218. Please,

  219. Please,

  220. Please,

  221. Please,

  222. Please,

  223. Please,

  224. His wondrous works each one.

  225. See that in His holy name to glory do accord.

  226. And let the heart of everyone rejoice that seeks the Lord.

  227. The Lord almighty and His strength with steadfast hearts be ye.

  228. His blessed and His gracious grace seek ye continually.

  229. Think on the works that ye have done which admiration breed.

  230. His wonders and the judgments all which on His life proceed.

  231. O ye that are of Abram's race, his servant well approved.

  232. O ye that Jacob's children are whom He chose on His own.

  233. Because He and He only is the mighty Lord our God.

  234. And His most righteous judgments are in all the earth abroad.

  235. Amen.

  236. We're going to turn to read together now in the Old Testament, the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  237. Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  238. And we'll read the whole of this chapter.

  239. So children of Israel have been led to the border of the promised land.

  240. As we see here in Deuteronomy, they're on the verge of going into it.

  241. But they go into it with these words ringing in their ears that they are to remember the Lord their God.

  242. And especially in the midst of all the plenty that they are going to see in the land.

  243. The food, the trees, the fruits of them.

  244. There's so much that they are going to have in terms of food and harvest and all of these things.

  245. But the Lord is reminding them to remember Him.

  246. So Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  247. The whole commandment that I command you today, you shall be careful to do.

  248. That you may live and multiply and go in and possess the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers.

  249. And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you.

  250. These 40 years in the wilderness.

  251. That He might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart.

  252. Whether you would keep His commandments or not.

  253. And He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna.

  254. Which you did not know, nor did your fathers know.

  255. That He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone.

  256. But man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  257. Your clothing did not wear out on you.

  258. And your foot did not swell these 40 years.

  259. Know then in your heart that as man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.

  260. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in His ways and by fearing Him.

  261. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land.

  262. A land of brooks, of water, of fountains and springs.

  263. Flowing out into the valleys and fields.

  264. A land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates.

  265. A land of olive trees and honey.

  266. A land in which you will eat bread without scarcity.

  267. In which you will lack nothing.

  268. A land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.

  269. And you shall eat and be full.

  270. And you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land that He has given you.

  271. Take care lest you forget the Lord your God.

  272. By not keeping His commandments and His rules and His statutes which I command you today.

  273. Lest when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them.

  274. And when your herds and flocks multiply.

  275. And your silver and gold is multiplied.

  276. And all that you have is multiplied.

  277. Then your heart be lifted up.

  278. And you forget the Lord your God.

  279. Who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

  280. Out of the house of slavery.

  281. Who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness.

  282. With its fiery serpents and scorpions.

  283. And thirsty ground where there was no water.

  284. Who brought you water out of the flinty rock.

  285. Who fed you in his wilderness with manna.

  286. That your fathers did not know.

  287. That he might humble you and test you.

  288. To do you good in the end.

  289. Beware lest you say in your heart.

  290. My power and the might of my hand has gained me this wealth.

  291. You shall remember the Lord your God.

  292. For it is He who gives you power to get wealth.

  293. That He may confirm His covenant.

  294. That He swore to your fathers as it is this day.

  295. And if you forget the Lord your God.

  296. And go after other gods and serve them and worship them.

  297. I solemnly warn you today.

  298. That you shall surely perish.

  299. Like the nations.

  300. That the Lord makes to perish before you.

  301. So shall you perish.

  302. Because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

  303. Amen.

  304. And may God bless that reading of His word to us.

  305. We will again engage in a word of prayer.

  306. Let us pray.

  307. Our gracious Lord.

  308. We do thank you for these words that we have read.

  309. And remind us Lord.

  310. That we are to focus upon you.

  311. And we ask that you will help us.

  312. Any distractions that are in our minds.

  313. Any thoughts that come our way.

  314. Even as we are under your word.

  315. That you would remove them from us.

  316. That we would be able to hear.

  317. What your spirit has to say to us.

  318. And we thank you Lord.

  319. That you are a God who speaks.

  320. And who ministers to us.

  321. In all our different needs.

  322. That you are a God who reminds us.

  323. That you are worthy of all our thanksgiving.

  324. And all our praise.

  325. And as we have so much to give thanks for our Lord.

  326. We are reminded.

  327. That we are not to forget you.

  328. That we are not to think.

  329. That it's by the might of our hand.

  330. Or by our own strength.

  331. That we have accomplished anything.

  332. But only through your goodness.

  333. And your grace towards us.

  334. So Lord may you keep us humble.

  335. And may you keep us ever dependent upon you.

  336. And also ever looking to you.

  337. With thanksgiving and prayer.

  338. And we do thank you Lord.

  339. That we have a harvest to be thankful for.

  340. We thank you that although we so often.

  341. Maybe don't see it ourselves today.

  342. Because we do not depend upon the land.

  343. As our fathers and forefathers once did.

  344. But yet oh Lord.

  345. We are still dependent.

  346. On the earth which you have made.

  347. The earth belongs unto the Lord.

  348. And all that it contains.

  349. Your word tells us.

  350. And we are reminded that our harvest comes.

  351. From around us.

  352. And throughout our country.

  353. And even to the ends of the earth Lord.

  354. We have an abundance of provisions.

  355. That come our way.

  356. We do thank you for all who provide us.

  357. With these things.

  358. For the many who labour.

  359. All year round.

  360. Seeking to produce a harvest at the end of it.

  361. And we thank you Lord.

  362. That even in the midst of difficult times.

  363. That you have still blessed.

  364. We do give you thanks for all.

  365. Involved in industry that helps us.

  366. To have so much.

  367. The food on the tables.

  368. And the water that's provided for us.

  369. And the clothes that we wear.

  370. We thank you for those who are involved.

  371. In transporting it.

  372. Throughout our country.

  373. And even throughout the world.

  374. We thank you that there are so many.

  375. Who work to that end of serving others.

  376. And so we give you thanks for all of these things.

  377. But above all Lord.

  378. We give thanks to you.

  379. As God and Lord of all.

  380. The harvest is yours Lord.

  381. And we thank you.

  382. For the provision that you make.

  383. And we thank you that today.

  384. In prayer we can come to you.

  385. With thanksgiving.

  386. But also with our petitions.

  387. Asking for your help.

  388. And your blessing over us.

  389. And so many different things.

  390. We do think of all that's going on.

  391. Around us today.

  392. We thank you Lord.

  393. For the work of the gospel.

  394. We continue to pray.

  395. For your blessing on the word.

  396. That goes out here.

  397. And throughout our island communities.

  398. And throughout our nation.

  399. And the world.

  400. We thank you for the gospel.

  401. And its power.

  402. And we pray Lord.

  403. That it will be powerful.

  404. Even today.

  405. We thank you for your people.

  406. Who pray.

  407. And we thank you.

  408. That we can join in with others.

  409. Praying today.

  410. For your blessing on us.

  411. And for all our different needs.

  412. And the many reasons.

  413. That we have to pray.

  414. Are even laid before us today.

  415. As we have been looking over.

  416. Even our own bulletin sheet.

  417. And thinking of all the many things.

  418. That are going on.

  419. We remember those who are mourning.

  420. And grieving.

  421. We remember families.

  422. In their own communities.

  423. As we commit.

  424. Let a Campbell's family to you.

  425. Asking your blessing.

  426. And peace and comfort to them.

  427. We remember too.

  428. The family of Robert Smith.

  429. Thankful for his years of ministry.

  430. Some of them here in the congregation.

  431. And for the blessing that he was to many.

  432. Throughout the congregation here.

  433. And through his service in the church.

  434. We thank you for that.

  435. And we pray for Janice.

  436. And we pray for Lisa and Gareth.

  437. And their families at this time.

  438. Asking for your comfort.

  439. And your blessing on them.

  440. And we think too.

  441. Of those who are unwell.

  442. Many who are in hospital.

  443. Or at home unwell.

  444. We commit them.

  445. To your care and keeping.

  446. We do pray for little Ruth today.

  447. Granddaughter of Ivor.

  448. And daughter to Mary Catherine.

  449. And the whole family at this time.

  450. Lord.

  451. We ask that you will bless them.

  452. And be with them.

  453. Help those who are caring for her.

  454. Lord.

  455. That your hand.

  456. Would be upon her for good.

  457. We commit them all to you.

  458. Lord.

  459. As the one who is able.

  460. We think too Lord.

  461. Of the work of the gospel.

  462. We thank you for the presbytery camp.

  463. Going on this weekend.

  464. We pray for all the young people.

  465. And the leaders.

  466. Who are there at the Scalladale Center.

  467. For this weekend.

  468. That your spirit be with them.

  469. To bless them.

  470. And to minister to them.

  471. That you'll be with them Lord.

  472. Over these days.

  473. That you will encourage them.

  474. And help them to see.

  475. The wonder of the gospel.

  476. And the beauty of Jesus Christ.

  477. And even in their young years.

  478. To come.

  479. And commit their lives to you.

  480. We think too.

  481. Of difficult situations.

  482. In our islands.

  483. Communities at this time.

  484. As we have been hearing.

  485. In this past week.

  486. Of people missing.

  487. And searches going on.

  488. We continue to pray.

  489. For those who are looking.

  490. For the young boy.

  491. Missing here.

  492. In Stornoway.

  493. And we pray Lord.

  494. That you will protect.

  495. And help those who are out.

  496. Even just now.

  497. Searching for him Lord.

  498. And we just commit.

  499. That situation to you.

  500. We commit.

  501. The search going on.

  502. In Benbeculas.

  503. Well today.

  504. For that young woman.

  505. Who's missing.

  506. Again Lord.

  507. Asking for safety.

  508. And protection.

  509. Over all.

  510. Who are out and about.

  511. For your comfort.

  512. And your blessing.

  513. Over these families.

  514. Who will be so anxious.

  515. At this time.

  516. Lord.

  517. May you surround them.

  518. Uphold them.

  519. And strengthen them.

  520. Throughout these days.

  521. Lord.

  522. We are reminded of.

  523. How we dependently are.

  524. Upon you.

  525. And we pray Lord.

  526. That today.

  527. As we worship you.

  528. That you will minister to us.

  529. That you will draw us to yourself.

  530. That we would realize.

  531. How precious you are.

  532. How precious life is.

  533. And as we even think.

  534. Of our parliament.

  535. And the meetings.

  536. Even in this coming week.

  537. For the assisted suicide bill.

  538. We pray that.

  539. Many members of parliament.

  540. Would see.

  541. The dangers of it.

  542. And come to seek.

  543. To protect life.

  544. In all its.

  545. Sanctity.

  546. And all that it is.

  547. That life is from you.

  548. So give wisdom.

  549. To our leaders.

  550. In these things.

  551. And we pray.

  552. Oh Lord.

  553. That you will protect us.

  554. From going down these paths.

  555. So Lord.

  556. We commit ourselves.

  557. Into your hands.

  558. Now asking for your blessing.

  559. Over us.

  560. Continue with us.

  561. As we open up your word.

  562. Together.

  563. As we look to you.

  564. We look to your blessing.

  565. On us.

  566. Asking forgiveness.

  567. For all our sins.

  568. In Jesus name.

  569. Amen.

  570. Well we're going to sing again.

  571. Before we turn back.

  572. To this passage.

  573. In Psalm 96a.

  574. The Sing Psalms version.

  575. Page 127.

  576. Psalm 96a.

  577. Page 127.

  578. We'll sing from verse 7.

  579. Down to the end of the psalm.

  580. All nations to the Lord.

  581. Ascribe the glory.

  582. That is due.

  583. Glory and strength.

  584. Ascribe to God.

  585. And praise his name.

  586. And you.

  587. We'll sing from that verse 7.

  588. Down to the end of the psalm.

  589. The tune is Bloxam.

  590. We stand to sing to God's praise.

  591. Amen.

  592. All nations to the Lord.

  593. Ascribe the glory.

  594. That is due.

  595. Glory and strength.

  596. Ascribe to God.

  597. And praise his name.

  598. And you.

  599. Enter his courts.

  600. With joy.

  601. Bring an offering.

  602. With you.

  603. Worship the Lord.

  604. In holy field.

  605. All earth before him.

  606. Tell every man.

  607. The Lord is king.

  608. He establishes the earth.

  609. And cannot move.

  610. The Lord will judge.

  611. The people sin is true.

  612. Let έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ έ

  613. They all will sing before the Lord who comes to judge the earth.

  614. He'll judge the world in righteousness, the people's sin is true.

  615. Well, if we can turn back together to our reading in Deuteronomy chapter 8, we can read again at verse 10 and 11.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  616. Deuteronomy chapter 8 at verse 10.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  617. And you shall eat and be full and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

  618. Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes which I command you today and so on.

  619. Well, we're going to be looking at the whole of this chapter, but these verses that we've read just give us a focus.

  620. There's two elements there for us.

  621. Being thankful, blessing the Lord for all the provision that he's made and not forgetting the Lord.

  622. Today is a special service of thanksgiving to God where we remember all of God's provision to us looking back, especially over this last year.

  623. It's an annual thanksgiving service with a particular emphasis on harvest thanksgiving.

  624. Now many sitting here today, you might say, what harvest?

  625. What harvest are we giving thanks for?

  626. We don't really do our own harvest, many of us.

  627. What are we looking at here for harvest thanksgiving?

  628. Well, we think today from the outset, how much do we actually take for granted today?

  629. We're maybe not dependent on harvesting our own fields as we once were,

  630. although many people still do try and have their own vegetables and fruits and different things.

  631. But if we're stuck, we can always just go to the shop and there we'll be able to buy whatever we need.

  632. Things that come from all over the world.

  633. We are still dependent on a harvest, even though there is so much we take for granted.

  634. And because we are dependent, it's not the harvest we're dependent on.

  635. It's God we are dependent on.

  636. Because we have to acknowledge that everything comes from him.

  637. The psalmist says, the earth belongs unto the Lord and all that it contains.

  638. Everything belongs to the Lord.

  639. So everything that we have before us today, even as we go home and sit at the table,

  640. and we enjoy a meal around the table, the clothes that we wear,

  641. the water that comes through our taps,

  642. all these things that we so often just take for granted,

  643. they are all the Lord's.

  644. And it's only through the Lord's gracious giving to us that we have these things

  645. in his provision for us.

  646. And so we are to be thankful to him.

  647. And as we see in this passage,

  648. the children of Israel here about to go into the promised land,

  649. into a land that's going to be full of many things,

  650. an abundance of good things,

  651. there also is a reminder here of just how easy it is to forget the Lord.

  652. Do not forget the Lord.

  653. It's the words that ring in this passage as well.

  654. And there are words that should be ringing in our ears today as well,

  655. that we should not at any point forget the Lord,

  656. but always be thankful to him for all that we have.

  657. Now,

  658. as we're looking at the situation of the people and the children of Israel here,

  659. and we look at our own situation today,

  660. you maybe think a service of Thanksgiving.

  661. Sometimes it's so difficult to see reasons for Thanksgiving.

  662. You know,

  663. as we've been praying together and thinking about the different things on the

  664. bulletin sheet and hearing difficult situations that our people are in,

  665. it can be hard to give thanks.

  666. Maybe some of you come in here today or are tuning in online today,

  667. and you're finding it hard to give thanks.

  668. Yet we're reminded that in every circumstance,

  669. we have the Lord with us.

  670. There's a preacher by the name of Alexander White in Edinburgh,

  671. and he was noted for always having a reason for Thanksgiving.

  672. And this day that he came into church,

  673. it was a wild day,

  674. but like we have outside today or even looking ahead to the forecast tonight,

  675. a wild day,

  676. a wet day.

  677. And one of the congregations sitting in thought,

  678. what's he going to have to give thanks to God for today?

  679. And yet he started his prayer by saying,

  680. we thank you,

  681. Lord.

  682. It's not always like this.

  683. And that's a reminder to us today that our circumstances,

  684. even when we are in the most difficult situations,

  685. it's not always like this.

  686. And it won't always be like this.

  687. And especially as we are looking and trusting in the Lord Jesus.

  688. So let us not forget the Lord,

  689. but let us be thankful to God for all of his provision,

  690. all that he gives to us on a regular,

  691. on a daily basis.

  692. And we're looking back,

  693. especially over this last year,

  694. thankful to him for all the provision made.

  695. Thankful today in the present and looking to his blessing to continue on us going forward,

  696. that we would not forget the Lord.

  697. So we want to look at this passage together,

  698. just under these three kind of themes.

  699. Thanksgiving,

  700. Thanksgiving,

  701. looking back to the past,

  702. Thanksgiving,

  703. looking to the present,

  704. and Thanksgiving,

  705. looking to the Lord's continued blessing going forward as well.

  706. So we want to begin by thinking of Thanksgiving for the past.

  707. And that's really where this passage begins.

  708. As we're looking at Deuteronomy 8 here,

  709. the setting is this waiting to go in to the promised land.

  710. And even as you read through this passage,

  711. you're seeing so much that they are going to enjoy in this land.

  712. It's going to be a precious land.

  713. In verse 7,

  714. it says,

  715. The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land,

  716. a land of brooks,

  717. of water,

  718. of fountains and springs,

  719. flowing out of the valleys,

  720. lands of wheat and barley,

  721. vines and fig trees,

  722. pomegranates,

  723. olive trees,

  724. honey,

  725. all of these things,

  726. things that they haven't had for a long time.

  727. In the wilderness of 40 years,

  728. of wandering through the wilderness,

  729. through their own disobedience,

  730. of not listening to God,

  731. not trusting God.

  732. They've been 40 years in the wilderness

  733. with so little in many ways,

  734. and yet the Lord providing for them.

  735. Here he is now about to bring them into a land

  736. that's going to be full of so many different things,

  737. so many blessings.

  738. But before they go into the land,

  739. he wants to focus on their past.

  740. And especially looking back

  741. and remembering how the Lord has helped them.

  742. Even in a time that there wasn't that plenty,

  743. a time of need,

  744. the Lord was with them.

  745. And you see that in verse 2.

  746. Before you go into this land,

  747. he says in verse 2,

  748. you shall remember the whole way

  749. that the Lord your God has led you

  750. these 40 years in the wilderness,

  751. that he might humble you.

  752. And then he goes on to say,

  753. testing you to know what was in your heart,

  754. whether you would keep his commandments or not.

  755. So the Lord was reminding them,

  756. as they were to look back and see,

  757. in the past,

  758. the Lord has helped.

  759. You have reasons to give thanks

  760. looking back.

  761. Times of deliverance that they can see,

  762. times of judgment that they could see,

  763. but all the time,

  764. the Lord has led you,

  765. he is saying.

  766. The Lord has led you

  767. these 40 years.

  768. He was with them

  769. all the time.

  770. Whether it was

  771. in times of

  772. some joyous times

  773. or whether it was

  774. sad times,

  775. the Lord was with them.

  776. He gave them

  777. the pillar of cloud

  778. and the pillar of fire

  779. so that by day and night

  780. they could move

  781. if that was the Lord's will for them.

  782. He never

  783. left them.

  784. They were always

  785. dependent on God

  786. and God was

  787. putting them

  788. to the test.

  789. Would they continue

  790. to hold on to his commandments

  791. or not?

  792. Would they continue to listen

  793. to his word

  794. or not?

  795. And as is often the case

  796. with God's people,

  797. there were times

  798. when they did listen,

  799. when they were obedient

  800. and things went smoothly,

  801. other times

  802. they were disobedient.

  803. They didn't listen

  804. and things didn't

  805. go well.

  806. And again,

  807. it's a reminder

  808. to our own experience

  809. and to our own lives

  810. as well.

  811. Whatever age

  812. we are today

  813. coming in here,

  814. we can look back

  815. over maybe short years,

  816. maybe long years.

  817. However many years

  818. of our lives

  819. we're looking back over

  820. and we could say

  821. like the word of God

  822. says here,

  823. the Lord your God

  824. has led you.

  825. Whatever you think

  826. of God,

  827. whatever this world

  828. thinks of God,

  829. this is still

  830. true today

  831. as it was then.

  832. The Lord your God

  833. has led you.

  834. And the Lord your God

  835. has tested you

  836. along the way.

  837. He is always

  838. putting his people

  839. to the test.

  840. Will they listen

  841. to the word

  842. of God

  843. or not?

  844. And so for ourselves

  845. today,

  846. we see

  847. the remarkable way

  848. that God

  849. has helped us

  850. over the years.

  851. The way that he has

  852. led us

  853. over the years.

  854. We are

  855. dependent

  856. on God.

  857. Utterly

  858. dependent

  859. on him.

  860. He humbles

  861. them here

  862. in the past

  863. so many times

  864. that they would

  865. acknowledge him

  866. as Lord

  867. and God.

  868. And today

  869. should be a day

  870. of humbling

  871. for ourselves

  872. today.

  873. Because in

  874. thankfulness

  875. there is so much

  876. humbling in that

  877. as well.

  878. That we would

  879. come and look

  880. back on our

  881. own lives

  882. and our own

  883. experiences

  884. and think

  885. yes,

  886. without the

  887. Lord

  888. where would

  889. we be?

  890. Without

  891. the Lord's

  892. provision

  893. where would

  894. we be?

  895. We would

  896. have nothing.

  897. Apart from

  898. him

  899. we can do

  900. nothing.

  901. So we are

  902. dependent

  903. upon him.

  904. We are

  905. dependent on

  906. him for

  907. food.

  908. We are

  909. dependent on

  910. him for

  911. clothes and

  912. water and

  913. all of these

  914. blessings that

  915. are ours.

  916. But what is

  917. the central

  918. part of all

  919. of this

  920. is God's

  921. word.

  922. word.

  923. Remember

  924. the Lord

  925. your God.

  926. Remember

  927. the whole

  928. of the way

  929. that the

  930. Lord your

  931. God has

  932. led you.

  933. And remember

  934. the word

  935. of God

  936. to keep

  937. his

  938. commandments.

  939. The word

  940. is central.

  941. The word

  942. is what is

  943. to be at

  944. the heart

  945. of our

  946. thanksgiving.

  947. So as we

  948. look back

  949. we do so

  950. through the

  951. eyes of

  952. faith looking

  953. to his

  954. word.

  955. So when

  956. we are

  957. tempted to

  958. say we

  959. can manage

  960. without.

  961. When we are

  962. tempted to

  963. say as you

  964. see later

  965. on in

  966. this chapter

  967. when he

  968. says I

  969. think it's

  970. verse 14

  971. do not

  972. forget the

  973. Lord who

  974. brought you

  975. out of

  976. the land.

  977. And then

  978. further on

  979. he speaks

  980. in verse

  981. 17 of

  982. beware

  983. lest you

  984. say in

  985. your heart

  986. my power

  987. and the

  988. might of

  989. my hand

  990. has gained

  991. me this

  992. wealth.

  993. that is

  994. always

  995. the danger

  996. with us.

  997. In forgetting

  998. the Lord

  999. we believe

  1000. it's our

  1001. own strength

  1002. our own

  1003. hand

  1004. that has

  1005. provided.

  1006. And Jesus

  1007. in the New

  1008. Testament

  1009. actually quotes

  1010. from this

  1011. passage as

  1012. well.

  1013. Man doesn't

  1014. live by

  1015. bread alone

  1016. but by

  1017. every word

  1018. that comes

  1019. from the

  1020. mouth of

  1021. God.

  1022. We are

  1023. dependent

  1024. on the

  1025. word of

  1026. God.

  1027. In

  1028. Matthew

    Matthew 4:3

  1029. 4 verse

  1030. 3 the

  1031. tempter

  1032. came to

  1033. Jesus and

  1034. said to

  1035. him, this

  1036. is when he

  1037. was in

  1038. the wilderness

  1039. himself,

  1040. if you

  1041. are the

  1042. son of

  1043. God

  1044. command

  1045. these

  1046. stones

  1047. to become

  1048. loaves

  1049. of bread.

  1050. Jesus

  1051. was hungry

  1052. and the

  1053. tempter

  1054. Satan

  1055. was saying

  1056. to him

  1057. if you

  1058. are the

  1059. son of

  1060. God

  1061. if you

  1062. are who

  1063. you say

  1064. you are

  1065. you could

  1066. make these

  1067. stones

  1068. become

  1069. loaves

  1070. of bread.

  1071. To

  1072. satisfy

  1073. your

  1074. hunger.

  1075. But Jesus

  1076. answered by

  1077. saying it

  1078. is written

  1079. man shall

  1080. not live

  1081. by bread

  1082. alone but

  1083. by every

  1084. word that

  1085. comes from

  1086. the mouth

  1087. of God

  1088. from this

  1089. passage.

  1090. And so

  1091. we are

  1092. dependent

  1093. on the

  1094. word of

  1095. God.

  1096. And the

  1097. word of

  1098. God reminds

  1099. us looking

  1100. back how

  1101. he has

  1102. always led

  1103. us and

  1104. how he

  1105. has always

  1106. helped

  1107. us.

  1108. Christian

  1109. writer Fred

  1110. Marsh

  1111. described the

  1112. Christian

  1113. looking back

  1114. in this

  1115. way and

  1116. especially

  1117. quoting from

  1118. Deuteronomy.

  1119. He said

  1120. when you

  1121. look back

  1122. the Christian

  1123. can see

  1124. the

  1125. deliverances

  1126. of the

  1127. Lord.

  1128. The way

  1129. the Lord

  1130. has led

  1131. looking at

  1132. verse 2

  1133. of this

  1134. passage

  1135. the blessings

  1136. that he

  1137. has bestowed

  1138. the victories

  1139. he has won

  1140. and the

  1141. encouragements

  1142. that he

  1143. has given.

  1144. The Christian

  1145. can see

  1146. these things

  1147. looking back.

  1148. So as we

  1149. look back

  1150. with thankfulness

  1151. to God

  1152. we can see

  1153. the deliverances

  1154. of God

  1155. over our

  1156. years.

  1157. We can see

  1158. the way

  1159. the Lord

  1160. has led

  1161. us over

  1162. the years.

  1163. We can see

  1164. the blessings

  1165. that he has

  1166. given us

  1167. over the

  1168. years.

  1169. We can see

  1170. the victories

  1171. that he has

  1172. won for us

  1173. over these

  1174. years.

  1175. We can see

  1176. the encouragements

  1177. that he has

  1178. given to us

  1179. over these

  1180. years.

  1181. So our

  1182. thanksgiving

  1183. is based

  1184. on looking

  1185. back.

  1186. But it's

  1187. also based

  1188. on looking

  1189. to the

  1190. present.

  1191. It's not

  1192. just about

  1193. remembering

  1194. something that

  1195. we do

  1196. once.

  1197. Thanksgiving

  1198. is a

  1199. constant

  1200. ongoing

  1201. thankfulness

  1202. to God.

  1203. Even though

  1204. this is a

  1205. day appointed

  1206. as harvest

  1207. thanksgiving

  1208. it doesn't

  1209. mean this

  1210. is the only

  1211. day we

  1212. give thanks

  1213. for our

  1214. food or

  1215. the water

  1216. or our

  1217. clothes.

  1218. It is a

  1219. constant

  1220. thanksgiving.

  1221. That's what

  1222. we are being

  1223. taught in

  1224. scripture.

  1225. We go on

  1226. in this

  1227. sense of

  1228. thanksgiving

  1229. to God.

  1230. A couple

  1231. of years

  1232. ago at

  1233. this time

  1234. of year

  1235. we know

  1236. that in

  1237. America

  1238. it's a

  1239. time of

  1240. thanksgiving

  1241. there as

  1242. well.

  1243. Well a

  1244. British

  1245. newspaper

  1246. started

  1247. had an

  1248. article about

  1249. this and

  1250. the headline

  1251. was

  1252. Thanksgiving

  1253. the latest

  1254. US

  1255. tradition

  1256. to take

  1257. root in

  1258. the UK.

  1259. And in

  1260. the article

  1261. they said

  1262. Thanksgiving

  1263. has no

  1264. place in

  1265. British

  1266. tradition.

  1267. And you

  1268. think to

  1269. yourself

  1270. wow

  1271. how could

  1272. we possibly

  1273. be thinking

  1274. along these

  1275. lines.

  1276. Now in part

  1277. you could see

  1278. what they were

  1279. meaning.

  1280. We don't

  1281. have turkey

  1282. just now

  1283. like they

  1284. do in

  1285. America.

  1286. We don't

  1287. sit and watch

  1288. American

  1289. football which

  1290. is such a

  1291. big part of

  1292. their

  1293. Thanksgiving

  1294. weekend.

  1295. We think

  1296. we don't

  1297. have that.

  1298. But to

  1299. say

  1300. Thanksgiving

  1301. has no

  1302. place in

  1303. British

  1304. tradition.

  1305. You know

  1306. sadly there's

  1307. truth in

  1308. that writing.

  1309. It's because

  1310. we've lost a

  1311. focus on

  1312. God and

  1313. Thanksgiving

  1314. almost has

  1315. no part

  1316. now.

  1317. But it

  1318. doesn't mean

  1319. that we are

  1320. not to be

  1321. thankful.

  1322. Because we

  1323. have so much

  1324. to be

  1325. thankful for.

  1326. not taking

  1327. in all

  1328. the

  1329. trappings

  1330. that might

  1331. go with

  1332. it.

  1333. But having

  1334. a focus

  1335. on God.

  1336. Thanksgiving

  1337. should very

  1338. much have

  1339. a place

  1340. in British

  1341. tradition.

  1342. As in

  1343. every

  1344. tradition.

  1345. Because

  1346. Thanksgiving

  1347. is to

  1348. God.

  1349. And so

  1350. we are to

  1351. be thankful

  1352. to God

  1353. in the

  1354. present

  1355. circumstances

  1356. of where

  1357. we are

  1358. for all

  1359. that he

  1360. has given

  1361. to us.

  1362. Again

  1363. another

  1364. writer

  1365. G.K.

  1366. Chesterton

  1367. put it

  1368. like this.

  1369. When it

  1370. comes to

  1371. life the

  1372. critical

  1373. thing is

  1374. whether you

  1375. take things

  1376. for granted

  1377. or take

  1378. them with

  1379. gratitude.

  1380. Isn't that

  1381. so true

  1382. of our

  1383. own

  1384. experience?

  1385. Do we

  1386. take things

  1387. for granted

  1388. or do we

  1389. take them

  1390. with gratitude?

  1391. So much

  1392. we just

  1393. take for

  1394. granted.

  1395. So much

  1396. in life

  1397. we just

  1398. think it's

  1399. going to

  1400. be there.

  1401. We go

  1402. to our

  1403. fridge,

  1404. we go

  1405. to our

  1406. freezer,

  1407. we go

  1408. to our

  1409. cupboard.

  1410. There's

  1411. food there

  1412. in abundance

  1413. of selection.

  1414. We go

  1415. to our

  1416. supermarkets,

  1417. we go

  1418. to our

  1419. shops,

  1420. we go

  1421. there and

  1422. we see

  1423. a selection

  1424. of different

  1425. kinds of

  1426. foods from

  1427. all over

  1428. the world.

  1429. We take

  1430. it for

  1431. granted.

  1432. And we

  1433. forget that

  1434. there were

  1435. days when

  1436. cupboards

  1437. were bare.

  1438. We forget

  1439. that there

  1440. were days

  1441. when there

  1442. was no

  1443. food to

  1444. put on

  1445. the table.

  1446. We forget

  1447. that there

  1448. were days

  1449. and even

  1450. today for

  1451. some it

  1452. is a

  1453. struggle to

  1454. put food

  1455. on the

  1456. table.

  1457. We take

  1458. so much

  1459. for granted.

  1460. And yet

  1461. the word

  1462. of God

  1463. is always

  1464. saying

  1465. remember.

  1466. Remember

  1467. the Lord.

  1468. Remember

  1469. what he has

  1470. given to

  1471. you.

  1472. Look to

  1473. him and

  1474. to his

  1475. word.

  1476. And often

  1477. in God's

  1478. word you

  1479. see a

  1480. way is

  1481. put in

  1482. place that

  1483. is a

  1484. constant

  1485. ongoing

  1486. remembrance.

  1487. Even

  1488. as the

  1489. children of

  1490. Israel came

  1491. out of

  1492. Egypt they

  1493. did so

  1494. with a

  1495. remembrance

  1496. of the

  1497. Passover.

  1498. How the

  1499. Lord delivered

  1500. them in

  1501. that night.

  1502. And the

  1503. Passover was

  1504. to be

  1505. remembered

  1506. going

  1507. forward.

  1508. To remember

  1509. their deliverance

  1510. from Egypt.

  1511. And then

  1512. throughout the

  1513. Old Testament

  1514. you find

  1515. different points.

  1516. And especially

  1517. putting up

  1518. stone piles

  1519. of remembrance.

  1520. In Joshua

    Joshua 4:6

  1521. chapter 4

  1522. verse 6

  1523. it says

  1524. taking these

  1525. stones

  1526. may be a

  1527. sign among

  1528. you when

  1529. your children

  1530. ask you

  1531. in time

  1532. to come

  1533. what do

  1534. these stones

  1535. mean?

  1536. Then you

  1537. shall tell

  1538. them that

  1539. the waters

  1540. of the

  1541. Jordan

  1542. were cut

  1543. off before

  1544. the ark

  1545. of the

  1546. covenant

  1547. of the

  1548. Lord.

  1549. So they

  1550. went across

  1551. the dry

  1552. ground

  1553. of the

  1554. Jordan

  1555. and they

  1556. set up

  1557. a

  1558. remembrance

  1559. there

  1560. of the

  1561. Lord's

  1562. deliverance.

  1563. In 1 Samuel

  1564. 7

  1565. Samuel it

  1566. says there

  1567. took a

  1568. stone

  1569. the

  1570. Ebenezer

  1571. stone

  1572. and set

  1573. it up

  1574. between

  1575. Mizpah

  1576. and

  1577. Shen

  1578. he called

  1579. it the

  1580. Ebenezer

  1581. stone

  1582. for he

  1583. said

  1584. till now

  1585. the Lord

  1586. has helped

  1587. us.

  1588. Hitherto

  1589. the Lord

  1590. has helped

  1591. us.

  1592. So there's

  1593. this

  1594. remembrance

  1595. ongoing.

  1596. In the

  1597. last few

  1598. weeks we've

  1599. come to do

  1600. remembrance

  1601. day.

  1602. Remembering

  1603. deliverance

  1604. from times

  1605. of war

  1606. an annual

  1607. event that

  1608. takes place

  1609. lest we

  1610. forget.

  1611. Next week

  1612. God willing

  1613. we will have

  1614. the Lord's

  1615. supper

  1616. a remembrance

  1617. of our

  1618. great

  1619. deliverance

  1620. from sin

  1621. that as we

  1622. put our

  1623. faith in

  1624. the Lord

  1625. Jesus

  1626. we have

  1627. that

  1628. deliverance

  1629. that salvation

  1630. from our

  1631. sin.

  1632. Again we

  1633. do that

  1634. in remembrance

  1635. of him.

  1636. And so our

  1637. thanksgiving

  1638. today is

  1639. in light

  1640. of so

  1641. many

  1642. different

  1643. things

  1644. going on

  1645. around us.

  1646. In our

  1647. present we

  1648. thank God

  1649. for all

  1650. that he

  1651. is doing

  1652. for us.

  1653. We do

  1654. that coming

  1655. today remembering

  1656. as James

  1657. acknowledges

  1658. in the New

  1659. Testament

  1660. every good

  1661. gift and

  1662. every perfect

  1663. gift is

  1664. from above

  1665. coming down

  1666. from the

  1667. father of

  1668. lights with

  1669. whom there

  1670. is no

  1671. variation or

  1672. shadow due

  1673. to change.

  1674. We look to

  1675. the one

  1676. who never

  1677. changes.

  1678. We are

  1679. dependent

  1680. upon him.

  1681. We have

  1682. past help

  1683. to remind

  1684. us of

  1685. thanksgiving.

  1686. We have

  1687. present

  1688. thanksgiving

  1689. too as we

  1690. look to

  1691. Jesus who

  1692. is the

  1693. rock of

  1694. our salvation.

  1695. And just

  1696. we will think

  1697. here the

  1698. children of

  1699. Israel on

  1700. the border

  1701. of the

  1702. promised

  1703. land.

  1704. To go

  1705. in there

  1706. not

  1707. forgetting

  1708. the

  1709. Lord.

  1710. We could

  1711. say of

  1712. ourselves

  1713. today in

  1714. our present

  1715. situation

  1716. we too

  1717. are on

  1718. the border

  1719. of a

  1720. promised

  1721. land.

  1722. We are

  1723. on the

  1724. border

  1725. of

  1726. eternity.

  1727. We are

  1728. on the

  1729. edge

  1730. of

  1731. eternity

  1732. and

  1733. eternity

  1734. is

  1735. before

  1736. us

  1737. all.

  1738. And

  1739. where

  1740. are we

  1741. going?

  1742. In

  1743. Matthew

  1744. 25

  1745. Jesus

  1746. there

  1747. speaks

  1748. of

  1749. two

  1750. different

  1751. kingdoms

  1752. two

  1753. different

  1754. places.

  1755. In

  1756. Matthew

    Matthew 25:34

  1757. 25

  1758. verse

  1759. 34

  1760. and this

  1761. is in

  1762. light of

  1763. those

  1764. who have

  1765. been

  1766. faithful

  1767. in

  1768. what

  1769. the

  1770. Lord

  1771. has

  1772. given

  1773. to

  1774. them.

  1775. He

  1776. says

  1777. there

  1778. to

  1779. those

  1780. who

  1781. have

  1782. been

  1783. faithful

  1784. then

  1785. the

  1786. king

  1787. will

  1788. say

  1789. to

  1790. those

  1791. in

  1792. his

  1793. right

  1794. come

  1795. you

  1796. who

  1797. are

  1798. blessed

  1799. by

  1800. my

  1801. father

  1802. inherit

  1803. the

  1804. kingdom

  1805. prepared

  1806. from

  1807. the

  1808. foundation

  1809. of

  1810. the

  1811. world.

  1812. There

  1813. is

  1814. blessing

  1815. in

  1816. going

  1817. into

  1818. a

  1819. land

  1820. prepared

  1821. for

  1822. the

  1823. Lord's

  1824. people.

  1825. But

  1826. there

  1827. is a

  1828. curse

  1829. as well

  1830. because

  1831. in

  1832. Matthew

  1833. 25

  1834. the

  1835. same

  1836. passage

  1837. in

  1838. verse

  1839. 41

  1840. it

  1841. says

  1842. then

  1843. he

  1844. will

  1845. say

  1846. to

  1847. those

  1848. on

  1849. the

  1850. left

  1851. depart

  1852. from

  1853. me

  1854. you

  1855. cursed

  1856. into

  1857. the

  1858. eternal

  1859. fire

  1860. prepared

  1861. for

  1862. the

  1863. devil

  1864. and

  1865. his

  1866. angels.

  1867. There

  1868. is

  1869. a

  1870. warning

  1871. there

  1872. to

  1873. remember

  1874. the

  1875. Lord.

  1876. The

  1877. warning

  1878. that we

  1879. see

  1880. in

  1881. verse

  1882. 11

  1883. take

  1884. care

  1885. lest

  1886. you

  1887. forget

  1888. the

  1889. Lord

  1890. your

  1891. God

  1892. by

  1893. not

  1894. keeping

  1895. his

  1896. commandments

  1897. and

  1898. his

  1899. rules

  1900. because

  1901. in

  1902. forgetting

  1903. as it

  1904. goes on

  1905. to say

  1906. in

  1907. verse

  1908. 19

  1909. if

  1910. you

  1911. forget

  1912. the

  1913. Lord

  1914. your

  1915. God

  1916. and

  1917. go

  1918. after

  1919. other

  1920. gods

  1921. and

  1922. serve

  1923. and

  1924. worship

  1925. them

  1926. I

  1927. solemnly

  1928. warn

  1929. you

  1930. today

  1931. that

  1932. you

  1933. shall

  1934. surely

  1935. perish.

  1936. take

  1937. care

  1938. lest

  1939. we

  1940. forget

  1941. the

  1942. Lord.

  1943. So

  1944. in

  1945. our

  1946. present

  1947. situation

  1948. we

  1949. have

  1950. this

  1951. warning

  1952. ringing

  1953. in

  1954. our

  1955. ears

  1956. if

  1957. we're

  1958. thankful

  1959. we are

  1960. not to

  1961. forget

  1962. the

  1963. Lord

  1964. but to

  1965. remember

  1966. every

  1967. blessing

  1968. that is

  1969. ours

  1970. in

  1971. him.

  1972. And

  1973. third

  1974. and

  1975. finally

  1976. here

  1977. we have

  1978. thanksgiving

  1979. looking

  1980. to the

  1981. future.

  1982. this

  1983. whole

  1984. chapter

  1985. for the

  1986. children

  1987. of

  1988. Israel

  1989. would

  1990. have

  1991. been

  1992. surely

  1993. ringing

  1994. in

  1995. their

  1996. ears

  1997. all

  1998. that

  1999. they

  2000. had

  2001. heard

  2002. the

  2003. excitement

  2004. of

  2005. looking

  2006. to

  2007. a

  2008. land

  2009. looking

  2010. ahead

  2011. to

  2012. a

  2013. place

  2014. of

  2015. plenty

  2016. they

  2017. had

  2018. manna

  2019. and

  2020. they

  2021. had

  2022. water

  2023. but

  2024. they

  2025. grumbled

  2026. over

  2027. the

  2028. years

  2029. about

  2030. all

  2031. of

  2032. these

  2033. things

  2034. but

  2035. here

  2036. they

  2037. were

  2038. looking

  2039. ahead

  2040. to

  2041. all

  2042. of

  2043. these

  2044. blessings

  2045. springs

  2046. of

  2047. water

  2048. harvests

  2049. of

  2050. wheat

  2051. and

  2052. barley

  2053. it

  2054. says

  2055. vine

  2056. and

  2057. fig

  2058. trees

  2059. pomegranates

  2060. honey

  2061. olive

  2062. trees

  2063. it was a

  2064. land of

  2065. plenty

  2066. so there was

  2067. much to be

  2068. excited

  2069. about

  2070. but

  2071. there was

  2072. also

  2073. this

  2074. warning

  2075. take

  2076. care

  2077. lest

  2078. you

  2079. forget

  2080. and

  2081. this

  2082. is

  2083. the

  2084. constant

  2085. warning

  2086. ringing

  2087. throughout

  2088. this

  2089. chapter

  2090. it's

  2091. the

  2092. word

  2093. remember

  2094. and

  2095. the

  2096. word

  2097. forget

  2098. it's

  2099. mentioned

  2100. again

  2101. and

  2102. again

  2103. and

  2104. that

  2105. is

  2106. the

  2107. words

  2108. that

  2109. we

  2110. are

  2111. to

  2112. take

  2113. with

  2114. us

  2115. today

  2116. as

  2117. well

  2118. a

  2119. day

  2120. of

  2121. thanksgiving

  2122. looking

  2123. back

  2124. a day

  2125. of

  2126. thanksgiving

  2127. in the

  2128. present

  2129. we can

  2130. be

  2131. thankful

  2132. for all

  2133. that we

  2134. have

  2135. but

  2136. thanksgiving

  2137. also

  2138. looks

  2139. forward

  2140. and

  2141. it's

  2142. based

  2143. on

  2144. not

  2145. forgetting

  2146. the

  2147. Lord

  2148. so that

  2149. as we

  2150. go

  2151. forward

  2152. as we

  2153. come

  2154. even

  2155. into

  2156. a

  2157. season

  2158. of

  2159. Christmas

  2160. as

  2161. we

  2162. have

  2163. plenty

  2164. before

  2165. us

  2166. once

  2167. again

  2168. as

  2169. we

  2170. go

  2171. into

  2172. a

  2173. new

  2174. year

  2175. God

  2176. willing

  2177. as

  2178. we

  2179. go

  2180. forward

  2181. will

  2182. we

  2183. take

  2184. these

  2185. words

  2186. with

  2187. us

  2188. take

  2189. care

  2190. lest

  2191. you

  2192. forget

  2193. the

  2194. Lord

  2195. your

  2196. God

  2197. and

  2198. verse

  2199. 17

  2200. beware

  2201. lest

  2202. you

  2203. say

  2204. in

  2205. your

  2206. heart

  2207. my

  2208. power

  2209. and

  2210. the

  2211. might

  2212. of

  2213. my

  2214. hand

  2215. have

  2216. gained

  2217. me

  2218. this

  2219. wealth

  2220. that

  2221. verse

  2222. 17

  2223. is

  2224. something

  2225. that

  2226. we

  2227. see

  2228. around

  2229. us

  2230. so

  2231. much

  2232. today

  2233. thanksgiving

  2234. has no

  2235. part

  2236. in

  2237. British

  2238. tradition

  2239. the

  2240. newspaper

  2241. headlines

  2242. says

  2243. and

  2244. this

  2245. is

  2246. the

  2247. reason

  2248. why

  2249. because

  2250. so

  2251. many

  2252. and

  2253. too

  2254. many

  2255. think

  2256. my

  2257. power

  2258. and

  2259. the

  2260. might

  2261. of

  2262. my

  2263. hand

  2264. has

  2265. gained

  2266. me

  2267. this

  2268. wealth

  2269. they've

  2270. forgotten

  2271. the

  2272. Lord

  2273. and

  2274. every

  2275. one

  2276. of us

  2277. has

  2278. that

  2279. danger

  2280. in

  2281. our

  2282. heart

  2283. that

  2284. we

  2285. would

  2286. be

  2287. a

  2288. people

  2289. who

  2290. forget

  2291. the

  2292. Lord

  2293. let

  2294. not

  2295. that

  2296. attitude

  2297. come

  2298. into

  2299. our

  2300. hearts

  2301. but

  2302. let

  2303. us

  2304. go

  2305. on

  2306. dependent

  2307. on

  2308. the

  2309. Lord

  2310. and

  2311. seeking

  2312. his

  2313. blessing

  2314. yes

  2315. there's

  2316. so

  2317. much

  2318. going

  2319. on

  2320. around

  2321. us

  2322. and

  2323. our

  2324. hearts

  2325. maybe

  2326. don't

  2327. feel

  2328. so

  2329. full

  2330. of

  2331. thankfulness

  2332. at

  2333. times

  2334. we

  2335. feel

  2336. sorrow

  2337. we

  2338. feel

  2339. sadness

  2340. we

  2341. feel

  2342. pain

  2343. we

  2344. grieve

  2345. over

  2346. so

  2347. much

  2348. we

  2349. grieve

  2350. over

  2351. the

  2352. lack

  2353. of

  2354. thanksgiving

  2355. we

  2356. have

  2357. in

  2358. our

  2359. hearts

  2360. we

  2361. grieve

  2362. over

  2363. our

  2364. sin

  2365. we

  2366. grieve

  2367. over

  2368. the

  2369. condition

  2370. the

  2371. state

  2372. of

  2373. our

  2374. world

  2375. and

  2376. all

  2377. that's

  2378. going

  2379. on

  2380. around

  2381. us

  2382. but

  2383. constantly

  2384. we're

  2385. reminded

  2386. that when

  2387. we are

  2388. truly

  2389. thankful

  2390. to

  2391. God

  2392. there is

  2393. better

  2394. to come

  2395. there is

  2396. a poem

  2397. called

  2398. out

  2399. of

  2400. the

  2401. darkness

  2402. and

  2403. it

  2404. reminds

  2405. us

  2406. that

  2407. there

  2408. are

  2409. times

  2410. of

  2411. testing

  2412. needed

  2413. for

  2414. times

  2415. of

  2416. joy

  2417. to

  2418. come

  2419. and

  2420. the

  2421. poem

  2422. goes

  2423. like

  2424. this

  2425. out

  2426. of

  2427. the

  2428. dark

  2429. forbidding

  2430. soil

  2431. the

  2432. pure

  2433. white

  2434. lilies

  2435. grow

  2436. out

  2437. of

  2438. the

  2439. black

  2440. and

  2441. murky

  2442. clouds

  2443. descends

  2444. the

  2445. stainless

  2446. snow

  2447. out

  2448. of

  2449. the

  2450. crawling

  2451. earth

  2452. bound

  2453. worm

  2454. a

  2455. butterfly

  2456. is

  2457. born

  2458. out

  2459. of

  2460. the

  2461. somber

  2462. shrouded

  2463. night

  2464. behold

  2465. a

  2466. golden

  2467. morn

  2468. out

  2469. of

  2470. the

  2471. pain

  2472. and

  2473. stress

  2474. of

  2475. life

  2476. the

  2477. peace

  2478. of

  2479. God

  2480. pours

  2481. down

  2482. out

  2483. of

  2484. the

  2485. nails

  2486. the

  2487. spear

  2488. the

  2489. cross

  2490. redemption

  2491. and

  2492. a

  2493. crown

  2494. we are

  2495. reminded

  2496. there

  2497. that

  2498. out

  2499. of

  2500. the

  2501. darkness

  2502. can

  2503. come

  2504. something

  2505. of

  2506. beauty

  2507. and

  2508. even

  2509. in

  2510. the

  2511. world

  2512. in

  2513. which

  2514. we

  2515. live

  2516. which

  2517. has

  2518. so

  2519. little

  2520. thought

  2521. of

  2522. thankfulness

  2523. to

  2524. God

  2525. or

  2526. dependence

  2527. on

  2528. God

  2529. still

  2530. out

  2531. of

  2532. that

  2533. can

  2534. come

  2535. praise

  2536. to

  2537. God

  2538. our

  2539. prayer

  2540. is

  2541. that

  2542. today

  2543. our

  2544. hearts

  2545. would

  2546. be

  2547. filled

  2548. with

  2549. thankfulness

  2550. and

  2551. that

  2552. we

  2553. would

  2554. go

  2555. praising

  2556. God

  2557. thankful

  2558. to

  2559. him

  2560. for

  2561. all

  2562. of

  2563. his

  2564. blessings

  2565. past

  2566. present

  2567. and

  2568. future

  2569. and

  2570. thankful

  2571. for

  2572. the

  2573. blessings

  2574. that

  2575. are

  2576. ours

  2577. in

  2578. Christ

  2579. so

  2580. even

  2581. as

  2582. we

  2583. prepare

  2584. our

  2585. hearts

  2586. God

  2587. willing

  2588. for

  2589. next

  2590. weekend

  2591. we

  2592. would

  2593. do

  2594. so

  2595. seeing

  2596. that

  2597. out

  2598. of

  2599. the

  2600. nails

  2601. the

  2602. spear

  2603. the

  2604. cross

  2605. what

  2606. came

  2607. redemption

  2608. and

  2609. a

  2610. crown

  2611. that

  2612. there

  2613. is

  2614. joy

  2615. for

  2616. God's

  2617. people

  2618. through

  2619. faith

  2620. in

  2621. Christ

  2622. we

  2623. thank

  2624. God

  2625. for

  2626. all

  2627. the

  2628. provision

  2629. that

  2630. we

  2631. have

  2632. we

  2633. thank

  2634. God

  2635. for

  2636. a

  2637. harvest

  2638. that

  2639. has

  2640. kept

  2641. us

  2642. in

  2643. this

  2644. last

  2645. year

  2646. but

  2647. above

  2648. all

  2649. we

  2650. thank

  2651. God

  2652. who

  2653. keeps

  2654. us

  2655. who

  2656. has

  2657. led

  2658. us

  2659. this

  2660. far

  2661. and

  2662. we

  2663. pray

  2664. will

  2665. lead

  2666. us

  2667. on

  2668. let

  2669. us

  2670. pray

  2671. we

  2672. thank

  2673. you

  2674. for

  2675. redemption

  2676. and

  2677. crown

  2678. for

  2679. your
