  1. We're here to worship God. We're going to begin by singing to his praise in Psalm 139a.

  2. ! So the Sing Psalms version of Psalm 139, you'll find that on page 180 in your psalm books.

  3. We're going to sing from the beginning down to the verse marked 10. These are words that remind us of

  4. God's awareness of everything about us. Psalm 139a on page 180. At the beginning,

  5. O Lord, you have examined me. You know me through and through. My sitting, rising, all my thoughts

  6. afar are known to you. Verses 1 to 10 of Psalm 139a to God's praise.

  7. You have examined me. You know me through and through. My sitting, rising, all my thoughts afar are known to you.

  8. My going and I'm lying down, I've been before you. Before I speak a word, O Lord,

  9. our heart is well known to you. You have me in behind before. You lay on me in your hand. Such

  10. The story is too wonderful, too high to understand.

  11. Where can I draw your spirit dream, or from your presence go?

  12. If to the heavens you are there, or in the depths below.

  13. If I should take the wings of dawn, and dwell beyond the sea.

  14. There also you will be my guide, your right and holding me.

  15. Let's bow our heads as we call on God's name in prayer.

  16. Let us pray together.

  17. Lord, we praise you this morning for your knowledge of us, of all things.

  18. There's everything, everything about us is known to you.

  19. And Lord, that can be a great comfort to us at times.

  20. It can also be something that unsettles us also.

  21. Lord, even as the psalmist penned these words, it's not clear.

  22. Whether he was comforted by that fact, or whether he was wanting to escape from you.

  23. But he knew that wherever he went, Lord, you would be there.

  24. And Lord, even when our circumstances are bleak, when we're in dark and difficult situations, Lord,

  25. you're aware.

  26. You are with us.

  27. You know us.

  28. We thank you, Lord, for that.

  29. And we thank you that you're here today.

  30. You're always there where your people meet to worship you.

  31. We thank you for every individual that has come here today.

  32. We're a large group of people, and yet we're all different.

  33. And we're all known to you.

  34. Everything about our circumstances, everything that's going on in our lives, Lord,

  35. you are intimately aware of these things.

  36. And we pray today, Lord, that you would meet us according to our need.

  37. Whether we're young or whether we're old, bless the children with us, we pray.

  38. And we desire, Lord, and long for your blessing on their young lives.

  39. Every single one of them is loved by you with a love that is even greater than the love of their own parents.

  40. And Lord, we pray for them today as they go out to Sunday school shortly.

  41. We pray for those who teach them.

  42. We pray for those who look after them and crash.

  43. And we ask, Lord, that you would be part of their lives.

  44. And even as they grow up, that they would grow up loving and following and deciding to serve the Lord Jesus.

  45. Be with the teenagers here as well, Lord, at a different stage in their lives

  46. when there are so many temptations and so many things that could draw them away from you and away from your word.

  47. Lord, guard them and keep them, we pray.

  48. And draw them ever closer to yourself.

  49. May we all, Lord, regardless of age, young or old, may we be brought closer to you today.

  50. Be pleased to bless us.

  51. Speak to us through the Bible.

  52. And forgive us for all our sins.

  53. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  54. Amen.

  55. Okay, I want to speak to the young folk for a moment.

  56. And I can see that you're dotted about all over the place.

  57. Today, I brought in an Advent calendar.

  58. So put up your hand if you have an Advent calendar.

  59. Let me see some hands go up.

  60. I bet you some adults have one of these as well.

  61. So, yeah, okay.

  62. Quite a few of you have an Advent calendar.

  63. An Advent calendar is a strange thing because the less that's left of it, the better.

  64. Because the less that's left of it, then the closer we are to Christmas.

  65. But, you know, it would be really strange if you got an Advent calendar and it didn't have any doors open by this stage in the month.

  66. If you had an Advent calendar and you didn't actually bother to eat the chocolates.

  67. That would be really odd.

  68. Because you would get...

  69. I knew somebody who had one like that last year, year before.

  70. Halfway through December, there was still no doors that had been opened on the Advent calendar.

  71. And I don't get that.

  72. Because you get no benefit from the Advent calendar unless you open the doors.

  73. And, you know, people are like that with Jesus as well.

  74. Particularly at Christmas time.

  75. Christmas, we should be remembering Jesus.

  76. That he...

  77. His birth into the world.

  78. It was an amazing event.

  79. And the fact that he came to save us.

  80. And yet there are people who celebrate Christmas and they forget about Jesus.

  81. Now, if you forget about your Advent calendar for a day or two and you miss a few chocolates, that's not going to do you any harm.

  82. It might actually do you some good to not eat so much chocolate.

  83. But, you know, if we forget about Jesus, that will not be good for us at all.

  84. So, I want you, if you have one of these, I want every single day that you open a door to have a chocolate.

  85. I want you to remember Jesus.

  86. And I want you to remember that Jesus came to save us from our sins.

  87. So, every day when you have your chocolate, thank the Lord for Jesus.

  88. He came to save you.

  89. And I hope and pray that you will grow up to trust and follow him.

  90. We'll do the Lord's Prayer together now as a congregation.

  91. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  92. Thy kingdom come.

  93. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  94. Give us this day our daily bread.

  95. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  96. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  97. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

  98. Amen.

  99. I'm going to sing again now.

  100. This time we're singing from Psalm 146 in the Scottish Psalter.

  101. You'll find that on page 446.

  102. Page 446.

  103. Psalm 146.

  104. And at verse 5, the top of the page,

  105. singing to the end of the psalm.

  106. Psalm 146 at verse 5.

  107. Oh, happy is that man and blessed,

  108. whom Jacob's God doth aid,

  109. whose hope upon the Lord doth rest,

  110. and on his God is stayed.

  111. Psalm 146.

  112. We're singing verses 5 to 10 to God's praise.

  113. O happy is that man and blessed,

  114. whom Jacob's God doth aid,

  115. whose hope upon the Lord doth rest,

  116. and on his God is stayed.

  117. Who made the earth and heavens high,

  118. who made the swelling deep,

  119. and all the cliffs within the sea,

  120. who took the heaven of the Lord doth.

  121. Who made the righteous judgment and saviour,

  122. for those so blessed that he,

  123. who to the hungry giveth food,

  124. God sets the listeners free.

  125. The Lord doth give the blind their sight,

  126. that the legend doth raise.

  127. The Lord doth fear the wise,

  128. that walk in a bright place.

  129. Let stranger's shield the widow's sting,

  130. they o'er flat self-esteem,

  131. but yet by him the wicked's clay,

  132. turned up sight and shall be.

  133. The Lord shall reign forevermore,

  134. like God, O Zion, he.

  135. Praise to all generations,

  136. Praise to the Lord give thee.

  137. We're going to read God's word now,

  138. from the Old Testament,

  139. in the book of Ruth.

  140. So we're going to Bethlehem this morning,

  141. but not for the birth of Jesus,

  142. but for the story of one of his ancestors,

  143. Ruth, from whom the Messiah was descended.

  144. So we're going to read the first chapter of Ruth.

  145. The first chapter of Ruth,

  146. maybe on page 267 in your Bibles.

  147. We'll read the whole of this chapter together.

  148. So let's hear God's word.

  149. Ruth chapter one.

  150. In the days when the judges ruled,

  151. there was a famine in the land,

  152. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah

  153. went to sojourn in the country of Moab,

  154. he and his wife and his two sons.

  155. The name of the man was Elimelech,

  156. and the name of his wife, Naomi,

  157. and the name of his two sons

  158. were Malon and Kilion.

  159. They were Ephratites from Bethlehem in Judah.

  160. They went into the country of Moab

  161. and remained there.

  162. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died,

  163. and she was left with her two sons.

  164. These took Moabite wives.

  165. The name of one was Orpah

  166. and the name of the other Ruth.

  167. They lived there about ten years,

  168. and both Malon and Kilion died,

  169. so that the woman was left

  170. without her two sons and her husband.

  171. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law

  172. to return from the country of Moab,

  173. for she had heard in the fields of Moab

  174. that the Lord had visited his people

  175. and given them food.

  176. So she set out from the place where she was

  177. with her two daughters-in-law,

  178. and they went on the way

  179. to return to the land of Judah.

  180. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

  181. Go, return each of you to her mother's house.

  182. May the Lord deal kindly with you

  183. as you have dealt with the dead and with me.

  184. The Lord grant that you may find rest

  185. each of you in the house of her husband.

  186. Then she kissed them,

  187. and they lifted up their voices and wept.

  188. And they said to her,

  189. No, we will return with you to your people.

  190. But Naomi said,

  191. Turn back, my daughters.

  192. Why will you go with me?

  193. Have I yet sons in my womb

  194. that they may become your husbands?

  195. Turn back, my daughters.

  196. Go your way.

  197. For I am too old to have a husband.

  198. If I should say I have hope,

  199. even if I should have a husband this night

  200. and should bear sons,

  201. would you therefore wait till they were grown?

  202. Would you therefore refrain from marrying?

  203. No, my daughters,

  204. for it is exceedingly bitter to me

  205. for your sake,

  206. that the hand of the Lord

  207. has gone out against me.

  208. Then they lifted up their voices and wept again.

  209. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law,

  210. but Ruth clung to her.

  211. And she said,

  212. See, your sister-in-law has gone back

  213. to her people and her gods.

  214. We turn after your sister-in-law.

  215. But Ruth said,

  216. Do not urge me to leave you

  217. or to return from following you,

  218. for where you go, I will go,

  219. and where you lodge, I will lodge.

  220. Your people shall be my people,

  221. and your God my God.

  222. Where you die, I will die,

  223. and there will I be buried.

  224. May the Lord do so to me,

  225. and more also,

  226. if anything but death parts me from you.

  227. And when Naomi saw that she was determined

  228. to go with her,

  229. she said,

  230. No more.

  231. So the two of them went on

  232. until they came to Bethlehem.

  233. And when they came to Bethlehem,

  234. the whole town was stirred because of them.

  235. And the woman said,

  236. Is this Naomi?

  237. She said to them,

  238. Don't call me Naomi.

  239. Call me Mara,

  240. for the Almighty has dealt

  241. very bitterly with me.

  242. I went away full,

  243. and the Lord has brought me back empty.

  244. Why call me Naomi?

  245. When the Lord has testified against me,

  246. and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me.

  247. So Naomi returned,

  248. and Ruth the Moabite,

  249. her daughter-in-law with her,

  250. who returned from the country of Moab,

  251. and they came to Bethlehem

  252. at the beginning of barley harvest.

  253. Amen.

  254. This is the word of the Lord,

  255. and we trust and we pray

  256. that he will follow it with his blessing.

  257. Let's just bow our heads once more

  258. in a word of prayer.

  259. Let's pray.

  260. Amen.

  261. Lord, we thank you for your word,

  262. the Bible,

  263. that is just so honest

  264. and shares with us

  265. the struggles

  266. that your people have.

  267. Most of us would

  268. be fearful of using

  269. the kind of words

  270. that Naomi used

  271. when she said

  272. that the Almighty

  273. has dealt very bitterly with me.

  274. But not only did she say that and more,

  275. but the Bible reports it for us,

  276. and it doesn't condemn her for it.

  277. Lord, her pain is evident,

  278. and her pain is understandable.

  279. After she had lost so much

  280. that was precious to her

  281. in the world.

  282. And Lord, we want to pray today

  283. for those who have pain

  284. in their hearts

  285. and those who are struggling

  286. this morning.

  287. We thank you, Lord,

  288. that while we can feel powerless

  289. to help people very often,

  290. we can pray to a God

  291. who is able.

  292. And so we ask you today, Lord,

  293. that you would come alongside

  294. those who are struggling.

  295. The Bible tells us

  296. that those that are broken

  297. in their hearts

  298. and grieved in their minds,

  299. God heals,

  300. and their painful wounds

  301. he tenderly abides.

  302. So, Lord, we ask that you

  303. would deal tenderly

  304. with all who face

  305. challenging situations

  306. in their own lives,

  307. in their own homes,

  308. in their own hearts,

  309. in their own families today.

  310. We pray, Lord,

  311. for those whose turmoil

  312. may be in their minds,

  313. those who are cast down,

  314. those who feel

  315. that are in a dark place.

  316. Lord, may you shine

  317. your light of hope

  318. into that darkness

  319. and transform their situations,

  320. we pray.

  321. Bless your word.

  322. Bless the gospel today

  323. as it is preached

  324. up and down our land

  325. and to the ends of the earth.

  326. We pray, Lord,

  327. for the preaching

  328. of your word here

  329. and in the other churches

  330. in the town

  331. and throughout this presbytery.

  332. We thank you, Lord,

  333. that we have a promise

  334. that your word

  335. will not return to you empty.

  336. It will accomplish

  337. your purposes.

  338. And, Lord,

  339. we pray that you would purpose

  340. that it would do us good today,

  341. that your word

  342. would be the means

  343. of drawing us

  344. closer to yourself.

  345. And we pray, Lord,

  346. that you would send workers

  347. into your harvest field.

  348. You've asked us

  349. to pray that prayer,

  350. to pray for laborers, Lord.

  351. And you know

  352. that the need is great

  353. within this presbytery,

  354. within our presbytery

  355. in the north

  356. and sky in Westeros.

  357. Lord,

  358. we ask that you

  359. would be calling men

  360. into ministry

  361. and calling others

  362. to serve you

  363. in different ways

  364. and that you, Lord,

  365. would provide

  366. for the need is great.

  367. Bless this congregation.

  368. Be with its minister,

  369. its office bearers.

  370. Be with all those

  371. who are members

  372. and adherents of it, Lord.

  373. Bless the children

  374. who've just gone out

  375. to Sunday school

  376. and creche.

  377. And, Lord,

  378. we pray that you would be

  379. at work in their young lives.

  380. Help calm them

  381. in all the responsibilities

  382. that he bears.

  383. Be with himself

  384. and Joan

  385. and with the family

  386. and uphold them, Lord,

  387. and equip them

  388. for the work, we pray.

  389. And bless the congregation

  390. in all its efforts

  391. to reach out to others.

  392. For the Christmas outreach

  393. next Saturday

  394. and the family service

  395. on Sunday,

  396. we ask, Lord,

  397. that you would be in it

  398. and that you would be

  399. using these means

  400. to draw people

  401. to yourself.

  402. So bless us now

  403. as we turn to your word,

  404. as we continue to sing it

  405. and as we shortly

  406. will study it.

  407. We ask, Lord,

  408. that you would bring

  409. this book alive to us

  410. and bring us alive to it.

  411. And may your Holy Spirit

  412. be our teacher

  413. and our guide today

  414. and make us willing students

  415. of your word,

  416. ready to learn from it

  417. and to be changed by it.

  418. And all of these things

  419. we ask, Lord,

  420. we ask with the cleansing

  421. and the forgiveness

  422. of our sins.

  423. In Jesus' name.

  424. Amen.

  425. We're going to sing

  426. once more this time

  427. from Psalm 55

  428. in Sing Psalms.

  429. You'll find that

  430. on page 71.

  431. Sing Psalms 55

  432. on page 71.

  433. And we're going to sing

  434. from the beginning

  435. down to the verse

  436. marked 8.

  437. Page 71.

  438. O God,

  439. please listen to my prayer.

  440. Do not ignore my plea.

  441. My anxious thoughts

  442. make me distraught.

  443. O hear

  444. and answer me.

  445. Psalm 55.

  446. We're going to sing

  447. verses 1 to 8

  448. to God's praise.

  449. O God, please listen to my prayer.

  450. Do not ignore my plea.

  451. O God, please listen to my prayer.

  452. My anxious thoughts

  453. make me distraught.

  454. O hear and answer me.

  455. I'm troubled by the voice of hope.

  456. By their malicious fear

  457. For they bring suffering to me

  458. The hatred I must bear

  459. Within the anguish lifts my heart

  460. It's ever shot the near

  461. I tremble out of dead and fire

  462. I know the wealth I fear

  463. Though that I lie not on the wings

  464. Then I would fly away

  465. And be at rest

  466. I'd live from here

  467. And in the desert stay

  468. Then would I do

  469. My hiding place

  470. Forever you see my fight

  471. But from the raging of the storm

  472. And from the tempest might

  473. As we seek God's help

  474. Can we turn back in our Bibles

  475. To the passage that we read together

  476. In the book of Ruth

  477. And we're in chapter 1 today

  478. We're looking at most of this chapter

  479. But we can read again a verse 21

  480. Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  481. And at verse 21

  482. Naomi is speaking

  483. And she says this

  484. I went away full

  485. And the Lord has brought me back empty

  486. Why call me Naomi

  487. When the Lord has testified against me

  488. And the Almighty has brought calamity upon me

  489. I went away full

  490. And the Lord has brought me back empty

  491. If this first chapter of the book of Ruth

  492. Were to be made into a film

  493. It might be called

  494. Three Funerals

  495. And a Famine

  496. It is a chapter filled with hardship

  497. And with pain

  498. It's a story of a family going through

  499. An incredibly challenging

  500. And sad experience

  501. But it also reminds us

  502. That God is interested

  503. In our families

  504. The book that comes before it

  505. The book of Judges

  506. Gives us an insight into

  507. The life of the Israelites

  508. In broad brush strokes

  509. You could say

  510. But then when we come into Ruth

  511. It's as if the camera zooms

  512. Right in

  513. To focus on one household

  514. And one family

  515. And this particular family

  516. Is a family that is struggling

  517. A family that is hurting

  518. And if the camera were to zoom in

  519. On your family today

  520. Might it be a similar picture

  521. Difficulties

  522. Trials

  523. Struggles

  524. Pain

  525. But what this book reminds us of

  526. Is that God knows

  527. What's going on

  528. As you read through this chapter

  529. He ensures that

  530. The name of every person

  531. In this family

  532. Is recorded then

  533. A reminder that

  534. God knows each of us by name

  535. God knows us intimately

  536. And God knows whatever struggles

  537. Or hurts

  538. Or pains

  539. Or trials

  540. That you might be experiencing today

  541. And this book of Ruth

  542. Also reminds us of this fact

  543. That the Bible

  544. Always deals

  545. With reality

  546. There's no sugar coating here

  547. No airbrushing

  548. Of the fact that

  549. Life is incredibly tough

  550. There are times when it's painful

  551. There are times when it's really sad

  552. And yet even in the midst

  553. Of these sad circumstances

  554. In Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  555. God is at work here

  556. God's at work

  557. And the heartwarming

  558. Aspect of this story

  559. Is that Ruth

  560. This complete outsider

  561. A Moabite

  562. From among the enemies

  563. Of God's people

  564. She comes

  565. To be

  566. Attached to the people of God

  567. And more than that

  568. She comes to trust

  569. The Lord

  570. And even more than that

  571. The Lord Jesus himself

  572. Is descended

  573. From her

  574. You don't need to read

  575. Very far

  576. Into the genealogy

  577. At the beginning

  578. Of the New Testament

  579. In Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  580. To find the name

  581. Of this outsider

  582. Ruth

  583. Amongst the ancestors

  584. Of Jesus

  585. So God's great plan

  586. Of salvation

  587. For the world

  588. His plan for the coming

  589. Of the Messiah

  590. It's being worked out

  591. Right here

  592. In this chapter

  593. Among the mess

  594. And the misery

  595. Ruth

  596. Is one of only two women

  597. Who have a book

  598. Of the Bible

  599. Named after them

  600. The other is

  601. Esther

  602. And they're two

  603. Very different people

  604. Esther was a queen

  605. Who lived in a palace

  606. Ruth was a peasant

  607. Who lived

  608. In poverty

  609. Massively different

  610. Circumstances

  611. Opposite ends

  612. Of the social spectrum

  613. And yet God cared

  614. For both of them

  615. So today

  616. We're just going to study

  617. This first chapter

  618. In the book of Ruth

  619. You need to go home

  620. And read the rest

  621. Of the story

  622. You may already

  623. Be familiar with it

  624. Maybe you're not

  625. But in this first chapter

  626. The focus is actually

  627. More on Naomi

  628. Than it is on Ruth

  629. So we'll spend a little

  630. Of our time

  631. Talking about Ruth

  632. But most of our time

  633. Will be focused

  634. On Naomi

  635. So I want to look at this

  636. Under four headings

  637. This morning

  638. First of all

  639. The problem

  640. This famine

  641. That caused them

  642. To have to leave

  643. Their homes

  644. The problem

  645. And then the parting

  646. There are several

  647. Partings

  648. Bereavements

  649. In this chapter

  650. And then thirdly

  651. The pledge

  652. We'll look at Ruth

  653. As she pledges

  654. Herself to Naomi

  655. And to her people

  656. And to her God

  657. The pledge

  658. And then finally

  659. The poverty

  660. From the verse

  661. That we took

  662. As our text

  663. Where Naomi

  664. Talks about

  665. Going out full

  666. And coming back

  667. Empty

  668. So we'll break it up

  669. Into these four sections

  670. And we'll work our way

  671. Through the chapter

  672. The problem

  673. The parting

  674. The pledge

  675. And the poverty

  676. So let's begin

  677. With the problem

  678. What is the problem here

  679. Well verse 1

  680. Sets the scene

  681. For us

  682. By telling us

  683. That this took place

  684. In the days

  685. When the judges ruled

  686. And that immediately

  687. Alerts us to the fact

  688. That these were dark

  689. And difficult days

  690. In Israel

  691. We know that

  692. Because you only have

  693. To look across the page

  694. To the end

  695. Of the book of Judges

  696. To find out

  697. What these days

  698. Were like

  699. The closing verse

  700. Of the book of Judges

  701. Says in those days

  702. There was no king

  703. In Israel

  704. Everyone did

  705. What was right

  706. In his own eyes

  707. There was no leadership

  708. And the people

  709. Had drifted away

  710. From the faith

  711. And then the next thing

  712. You find out

  713. In Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  714. It's also something

  715. That should surprise us

  716. That is that

  717. There was famine

  718. In Bethlehem

  719. Because the very name

  720. Bethlehem

  721. It means house of bread

  722. And it was given

  723. Part of the reason

  724. It was given that name

  725. Was it was a fertile place

  726. So it was unusual

  727. To have famine

  728. In Bethlehem

  729. And then we meet

  730. The family

  731. In verse 2

  732. All of them are named

  733. And we're told

  734. That they decide

  735. To go to Moab

  736. For a while

  737. Verse 1 uses

  738. The word soldier

  739. Which just means

  740. A short trip

  741. But clearly

  742. The situation changes

  743. Because by the end

  744. Of verse 2

  745. We're told that

  746. They remained there

  747. So the plan

  748. Has changed

  749. They're going to go

  750. For a time

  751. Because there's famine

  752. But they end up

  753. Staying there

  754. Now going to Moab

  755. Is a strange choice

  756. Of place

  757. To go

  758. Because Moab

  759. Was enemy territory

  760. The Moabites

  761. Were enemies

  762. Of the people

  763. Of God

  764. If you read

  765. Through the book

  766. Of Judges

  767. You'll find that

  768. Moab

  769. Had attacked

  770. And subdued Israel

  771. Ruled over them

  772. For 18 years

  773. So it's an odd

  774. Place

  775. To go

  776. It's even worth

  777. Bearing in mind

  778. Where Moab

  779. Came from

  780. The Moabites

  781. Were descended

  782. From Lot

  783. From that

  784. Incestuous

  785. Encounter

  786. He had

  787. With his own

  788. Daughter

  789. When he got

  790. Drunk

  791. And one of

  792. The children

  793. Born

  794. Was called

  795. Moab

  796. The Moabites

  797. Came from there

  798. And they were

  799. Long term

  800. Enemies

  801. Of the people

  802. Of God

  803. And it's just

  804. A reminder to us

  805. That sin

  806. Has long

  807. Lasting

  808. Consequences

  809. Decades

  810. And decades

  811. And decades

  812. Later

  813. The Moabites

  814. Were a thorn

  815. In the side

  816. Of God's

  817. People

  818. We meet

  819. Elimelech

  820. He's the head

  821. Of this home

  822. His name

  823. Means my God

  824. As king

  825. Although

  826. Some will

  827. Suggest that

  828. He's not

  829. Really living

  830. Up to his

  831. Name

  832. If he's

  833. Leaving Bethlehem

  834. The house

  835. Of bread

  836. Where God

  837. Has blessed

  838. Them

  839. To go

  840. To enemy

  841. Territory

  842. To Moab

  843. Well maybe

  844. That's the case

  845. The passage

  846. Doesn't say

  847. So it doesn't

  848. Say that he

  849. Was wrong

  850. To go

  851. Should Elimelech

  852. Have stayed

  853. In Bethlehem

  854. Even when

  855. There was famine

  856. Would you

  857. Have

  858. It is hard

  859. To study this

  860. Chapter and

  861. Study this book

  862. Without forming

  863. A view

  864. Over whether

  865. He was wrong

  866. To go

  867. Or not

  868. But more

  869. Important

  870. Than what

  871. We think

  872. Of his

  873. Decision

  874. Is how

  875. We respond

  876. When trials

  877. And difficulties

  878. And challenging

  879. Circumstances

  880. Face us

  881. There are three

  882. Main options

  883. That are open

  884. To you

  885. When life

  886. Gets difficult

  887. Escape

  888. Try and run

  889. From it

  890. Endure

  891. Simply put up

  892. With it in some

  893. Stoic kind

  894. Of way

  895. Or embrace

  896. It

  897. See it as

  898. Part of God's

  899. Plan for your

  900. Life

  901. Now

  902. Embrace might

  903. Be too strong

  904. A word

  905. I used it

  906. Obviously

  907. Because the

  908. Other two

  909. Were ease

  910. But just

  911. Simply

  912. Accepting

  913. This is what

  914. God has

  915. For me

  916. Just now

  917. That is how

  918. We should

  919. Deal

  920. With our

  921. Trials

  922. But I'm not

  923. Saying it's

  924. Easy to do

  925. So

  926. It wasn't

  927. Easy for Elimelech

  928. He took the

  929. Other option

  930. He went

  931. For the

  932. Escape

  933. Route

  934. But that's

  935. The problem

  936. That he

  937. Faced

  938. There was

  939. Famine

  940. And he

  941. Had a

  942. Family

  943. Who were

  944. Hungry

  945. So that's

  946. Our first

  947. Point today

  948. The problem

  949. Life was

  950. Incredibly

  951. Difficult

  952. For this

  953. Family

  954. But we're

  955. Going to

  956. Look secondly

  957. At the

  958. Parting

  959. Life

  960. Wasn't

  961. Going to

  962. Get

  963. Easier

  964. By taking

  965. The escape

  966. Route

  967. The very

  968. Next thing

  969. We're told

  970. After we

  971. Read that

  972. They go to

  973. Moab

  974. Is that

  975. Elimelech

  976. Died

  977. How tough

  978. Was that

  979. They're in a

  980. New place

  981. Unfamiliar

  982. Territory

  983. And the

  984. Head of the

  985. Home is

  986. Gone

  987. Now

  988. There must

  989. Have been

  990. Some good

  991. Times in

  992. Moab as

  993. Well because

  994. They celebrated

  995. Two weddings

  996. While they

  997. Were there

  998. The two

  999. Boys

  1000. Marlon

  1001. And

  1002. Killian

  1003. Found

  1004. Wives

  1005. And got

  1006. Married

  1007. But clearly

  1008. The good

  1009. Times were

  1010. Short lived

  1011. Within ten

  1012. Years

  1013. It had all

  1014. Fallen

  1015. Apart

  1016. And I've

  1017. Called the

  1018. Second point

  1019. The parting

  1020. Because there

  1021. Are repeated

  1022. Partings

  1023. If you look

  1024. At verse

  1025. Five

  1026. It says

  1027. The woman

  1028. Was left

  1029. Without

  1030. Her two

  1031. Sons

  1032. And her

  1033. Husband

  1034. It's just

  1035. A few

  1036. Verses

  1037. And everything

  1038. Changed

  1039. Everything

  1040. Changed

  1041. First there's

  1042. One widow

  1043. Then there's

  1044. Two widows

  1045. And then there's

  1046. Three widows

  1047. And you know

  1048. It's easy to

  1049. Suggest

  1050. Maybe even

  1051. Tempting

  1052. To conclude

  1053. That they

  1054. Must have

  1055. Been wrong

  1056. To go

  1057. If it all

  1058. Went

  1059. So

  1060. Pearship

  1061. But we

  1062. Need to

  1063. Be careful

  1064. We need

  1065. To be careful

  1066. In forming

  1067. That kind

  1068. Of view

  1069. Because

  1070. The bible

  1071. Doesn't say

  1072. So

  1073. What we

  1074. Can say

  1075. With certainty

  1076. Is that

  1077. Naomi

  1078. Believed

  1079. That this

  1080. Was

  1081. God's

  1082. Chastisement

  1083. For something

  1084. Wrong

  1085. In her

  1086. Life

  1087. So you'll

  1088. Notice

  1089. That in a

  1090. Few verses

  1091. So say

  1092. At the end

  1093. Of verse

  1094. Thirteen

  1095. She says

  1096. It's exceedingly

  1097. Bitter for

  1098. Me

  1099. For your

  1100. Sake

  1101. That the

  1102. Hand of

  1103. The lord

  1104. Has gone

  1105. Out against

  1106. Me

  1107. God's

  1108. Against

  1109. Her

  1110. She says

  1111. And then

  1112. Look at

  1113. Verse

  1114. Twenty

  1115. One

  1116. Middle of

  1117. The

  1118. Verse

  1119. Towards the

  1120. End of

  1121. The

  1122. Verse

  1123. Why call

  1124. Me

  1125. Naomi

  1126. When

  1127. The lord

  1128. Has

  1129. Testified

  1130. Against

  1131. Me

  1132. The lord

  1133. Has testified

  1134. Against

  1135. Me

  1136. She's

  1137. Saying

  1138. God

  1139. Has

  1140. Some

  1141. Evidence

  1142. Against

  1143. Me

  1144. And that's

  1145. Why she

  1146. Believes

  1147. Everything's

  1148. Gone

  1149. So

  1150. Pearship

  1151. Why she's

  1152. Had so

  1153. Much

  1154. Trouble

  1155. Now

  1156. Maybe

  1157. She's

  1158. Right

  1159. Maybe

  1160. She's

  1161. Right

  1162. But even

  1163. If she

  1164. Is

  1165. Even

  1166. If

  1167. This

  1168. Is

  1169. And

  1170. This

  1171. Is

  1172. Just

  1173. Her

  1174. View

  1175. Okay

  1176. This

  1177. Is

  1178. Not

  1179. Scripture

  1180. That's

  1181. Saying

  1182. This

  1183. Is

  1184. A

  1185. Chastisement

  1186. From

  1187. God

  1188. This

  1189. Is

  1190. Just

  1191. Naomi's

  1192. !

  1193. Conclusion

  1194. !

  1195. But even

  1196. If she's

  1197. Right

  1198. That this

  1199. Is

  1200. A

  1201. Chastisement

  1202. From

  1203. God

  1204. For

  1205. Some

  1206. Wrongdoing

  1207. In

  1208. Her

  1209. Life

  1210. We

  1211. Can't

  1212. Be

  1213. Sure

  1214. What

  1215. Wrong

  1216. What

  1217. It

  1218. Is

  1219. That

  1220. She

  1221. Did

  1222. Wrong

  1223. Was

  1224. It

  1225. The

  1226. Fact

  1227. That

  1228. The

  1229. Family

  1230. Left

  1231. Bethlehem

  1232. When

  1233. They

  1234. Ought

  1235. Not

  1236. To

  1237. And

  1238. Went

  1239. To

  1240. An

  1241. Enemy

  1242. Country

  1243. Was

  1244. It

  1245. The

  1246. Fact

  1247. That

  1248. She

  1249. Allowed

  1250. Her

  1251. Sons

  1252. To

  1253. Marry

  1254. Heath

  1255. And

  1256. Wives

  1257. From

  1258. Moab

  1259. Was

  1260. It

  1261. Something

  1262. Else

  1263. All

  1264. Together

  1265. Or

  1266. Was

  1267. It

  1268. None

  1269. Of

  1270. These

  1271. Was

  1272. She

  1273. Just

  1274. Misled

  1275. In

  1276. Thinking

  1277. That

  1278. This

  1279. Was

  1280. A

  1281. Punishment

  1282. Or

  1283. A

  1284. Chastisement

  1285. Of

  1286. Some

  1287. Sort

  1288. We

  1289. Don't

  1290. Know

  1291. There's

  1292. Lots

  1293. Of

  1294. Things

  1295. We

  1296. Don't

  1297. Know

  1298. What

  1299. We

  1300. Do

  1301. Know

  1302. Is

  1303. That

  1304. We

  1305. Are

  1306. Looking

  1307. At

  1308. A

  1309. Woman

  1310. In

  1311. Turmoil

  1312. !

  1313. Hard

  1314. For

  1315. Her

  1316. To

  1317. Think

  1318. Straight

  1319. Maybe

  1320. You

  1321. Know

  1322. What

  1323. That's

  1324. Like

  1325. When

  1326. You

  1327. Go

  1328. Through

  1329. Circumstances

  1330. Like

  1331. This

  1332. You

  1333. Can't

  1334. Think

  1335. Straight

  1336. The

  1337. Following

  1338. Verses

  1339. They

  1340. Show

  1341. Us

  1342. That

  1343. Naomi

  1344. Is

  1345. All

  1346. Over

  1347. The

  1348. Place

  1349. Because

  1350. She

  1351. Decides

  1352. To

  1353. Go

  1354. Back

  1355. To

  1356. Bethlehem

  1357. With

  1358. Her

  1359. Two

  1360. Daughters

  1361. In

  1362. Law

  1363. And

  1364. Then

  1365. At

  1366. Some

  1367. Point

  1368. On

  1369. The

  1370. Way

  1371. She

  1372. Decides

  1373. No

  1374. Maybe

  1375. They

  1376. Should

  1377. Go

  1378. They

  1379. Should

  1380. Go

  1381. !

  1382. She

  1383. Tells

  1384. Them

  1385. To

  1386. Go

  1387. Back

  1388. And

  1389. She

  1390. She

  1391. Is

  1392. At

  1393. One

  1394. Point

  1395. Praying

  1396. That

  1397. The

  1398. Lord

  1399. Will

  1400. Bless

  1401. Them

  1402. And

  1403. Then

  1404. In

  1405. Another

  1406. Moment

  1407. She

  1408. Telling

  1409. Them

  1410. Go

  1411. Back

  1412. To

  1413. Your

  1414. Own

  1415. Gods

  1416. This

  1417. Is

  1418. A

  1419. Woman

  1420. Who

  1421. Is

  1422. Deeply

  1423. Confused

  1424. Notice

  1425. Her

  1426. Prayer

  1427. Or

  1428. At

  1429. Least

  1430. It's

  1431. A

  1432. Desire

  1433. For

  1434. God's

  1435. Blessing

  1436. Verses

  1437. 8

  1438. And

  1439. 9

  1440. Naomi

  1441. said

  1442. To

  1443. Her

  1444. Two

  1445. Daughters

  1446. Go

  1447. Return

  1448. Each

  1449. Of

  1450. To

  1451. She

  1452. Is

  1453. Asking

  1454. God's

  1455. Blessing

  1456. On

  1457. Them

  1458. One

  1459. Moment

  1460. And

  1461. Then

  1462. Not

  1463. Long

  1464. After

  1465. That

  1466. She

  1467. Is

  1468. Telling

  1469. Them

  1470. Go

  1471. Back

  1472. To

  1473. Your

  1474. Own

  1475. Gods

  1476. Verse

  1477. 15

  1478. She

  1479. Said

  1480. See

  1481. Your

  1482. Sister

  1483. In

  1484. Law

  1485. Is

  1486. Going

  1487. Back

  1488. To

  1489. Her

  1490. People

  1491. And

  1492. To

  1493. Her

  1494. Gods

  1495. Return

  1496. After

  1497. Your

  1498. Sister

  1499. In

  1500. Law

  1501. If

  1502. You

  1503. Want

  1504. To

  1505. Be

  1506. Whether

  1507. You

  1508. Want

  1509. To

  1510. Be

  1511. Sympathetic

  1512. With

  1513. Naomi

  1514. Or

  1515. You

  1516. Want

  1517. To

  1518. Criticize

  1519. Naomi

  1520. You

  1521. Could

  1522. Find

  1523. A

  1524. Verse

  1525. To

  1526. Support

  1527. Your

  1528. Argument

  1529. And

  1530. What

  1531. We

  1532. Actually

  1533. See

  1534. From

  1535. This

  1536. Is

  1537. This

  1538. Is

  1539. A

  1540. Woman

  1541. Who

  1542. Is

  1543. In

  1544. Torment

  1545. Who

  1546. Is

  1547. In

  1548. Turmoil

  1549. !

  1550. And

  1551. No

  1552. Wonder

  1553. Berement

  1554. Is

  1555. Painful

  1556. And

  1557. One

  1558. After

  1559. Another

  1560. After

  1561. Another

  1562. Incredibly

  1563. So

  1564. Naomi

  1565. Has

  1566. Been

  1567. Parted

  1568. From

  1569. Three

  1570. People

  1571. Who

  1572. Were

  1573. Precious

  1574. To

  1575. Her

  1576. In

  1577. Just

  1578. One

  1579. Decade

  1580. Of

  1581. Disaster

  1582. And

  1583. Now

  1584. We

  1585. See

  1586. Her

  1587. And

  1588. She's

  1589. All

  1590. Over

  1591. The

  1592. Place

  1593. So

  1594. That's

  1595. Our

  1596. Second

  1597. Point

  1598. To

  1599. The

  1600. Parting

  1601. The

  1602. Parting

  1603. There

  1604. Were

  1605. Several

  1606. Partings

  1607. Here

  1608. So

  1609. We

  1610. Looked

  1611. At

  1612. The

  1613. Problem

  1614. We

  1615. Looked

  1616. At

  1617. The

  1618. Parting

  1619. I

  1620. Want

  1621. To

  1622. Come

  1623. Now

  1624. And

  1625. Think

  1626. About

  1627. The

  1628. Pledge

  1629. The

  1630. Pledge

  1631. From

  1632. Verse

  1633. !

  1634. Takes

  1635. Its

  1636. Name

  1637. And

  1638. Ruth

  1639. Refuses

  1640. To

  1641. Stay

  1642. In

  1643. Moab

  1644. Even

  1645. Though

  1646. Her

  1647. Sister

  1648. In

  1649. Law

  1650. Orpah

  1651. Has

  1652. Decided

  1653. To

  1654. Go

  1655. Back

  1656. And

  1657. She

  1658. Makes

  1659. This

  1660. Impassioned

  1661. Plea

  1662. To

  1663. Naomi

  1664. That

  1665. She

  1666. Really

  1667. Must

  1668. Go

  1669. With

  1670. Her

  1671. You'll

  1672. See

  1673. It

  1674. In

  1675. Verse

  1676. 16

  1677. And

  1678. 17

  1679. And

  1680. As

  1681. You

  1682. Read

  1683. These

  1684. Verses

  1685. You'll

  1686. See

  1687. That

  1688. This

  1689. Is

  1690. A

  1691. Professional

  1692. !

  1693. Faith!

  1694. She's

  1695. Come

  1696. To

  1697. Trust

  1698. The

  1699. Lord!

  1700. Let

  1701. Me

  1702. Read

  1703. 16

  1704. And

  1705. 17

  1706. But

  1707. Ruth

  1708. Said

  1709. Do

  1710. Not

  1711. Urge

  1712. Me

  1713. To

  1714. Leave

  1715. I

  1716. Will

  1717. Die

  1718. And

  1719. There

  1720. Will

  1721. I

  1722. Be

  1723. Buried

  1724. May

  1725. The

  1726. Lord

  1727. Do

  1728. So

  1729. To

  1730. Me

  1731. And

  1732. More

  1733. Also

  1734. If

  1735. Anything

  1736. But

  1737. Death

  1738. Parts

  1739. Me

  1740. From

  1741. You

  1742. This

  1743. Is

  1744. It's

  1745. More

  1746. Than

  1747. Just

  1748. A

  1749. Commitment

  1750. To

  1751. Israelite

  1752. Religion

  1753. In

  1754. Verse

  1755. 17

  1756. She

  1757. Calls

  1758. God

  1759. The

  1760. Lord

  1761. The

  1762. Hebrew

  1763. Name

  1764. Yahweh

  1765. Which

  1766. Is

  1767. Covenant

  1768. People

  1769. The name

  1770. That

  1771. The

  1772. Covenant

  1773. People

  1774. Would

  1775. Use

  1776. This

  1777. Is

  1778. Her

  1779. Showing

  1780. Her

  1781. Allegiance

  1782. To

  1783. The

  1784. Lord

  1785. And

  1786. You

  1787. Have

  1788. To

  1789. Ask

  1790. How

  1791. Did

  1792. That

  1793. Happen

  1794. Here

  1795. Is

  1796. A

  1797. Woman

  1798. Brought

  1799. Up

  1800. Steeped

  1801. In

  1802. Idolatry

  1803. The

  1804. Moabites

  1805. Worshipped

  1806. Chemosh

  1807. One

  1808. Of

  1809. The

  1810. Worst

  1811. Idols

  1812. One

  1813. Who

  1814. Accepted

  1815. Human

  1816. Sacrifice

  1817. That's

  1818. How

  1819. This

  1820. Woman

  1821. Was

  1822. Brought

  1823. Up

  1824. Steeped

  1825. In

  1826. Idolatry

  1827. How

  1828. Is

  1829. It

  1830. That

  1831. She

  1832. Come

  1833. To

  1834. Trust

  1835. The

  1836. Lord

  1837. Well

  1838. Conversion

  1839. Is

  1840. Always

  1841. A

  1842. Work

  1843. Of

  1844. God

  1845. God

  1846. Alone

  1847. Can

  1848. Do

  1849. Circumstances

  1850. You

  1851. Might

  1852. Think

  1853. That

  1854. The

  1855. Loss

  1856. Of

  1857. Her

  1858. Husband

  1859. Might

  1860. Have

  1861. Had

  1862. The

  1863. Opposite

  1864. Effect

  1865. Might

  1866. Have

  1867. Driven

  1868. Her

  1869. Away

  1870. From

  1871. Any

  1872. Thought

  1873. She

  1874. Might

  1875. Be

  1876. Having

  1877. About

  1878. God

  1879. And

  1880. Yet

  1881. It's

  1882. Quite

  1883. Possible

  1884. That

  1885. It

  1886. Was

  1887. Standing

  1888. At

  1889. The

  1890. Graveside

  1891. Of

  1892. Her

  1893. Husband

  1894. That

  1895. Ruth

  1896. Realized

  1897. There

  1898. Must

  1899. Be

  1900. More

  1901. To

  1902. Life

  1903. Than

  1904. This

  1905. You

  1906. Know

  1907. It's

  1908. Not

  1909. Uncommon

  1910. For

  1911. Beream

  1912. To

  1913. Bring

  1914. Us

  1915. Face

  1916. To

  1917. Face

  1918. With

  1919. The

  1920. Realization

  1921. That

  1922. We

  1923. Need

  1924. God

  1925. Ruth

  1926. Lost

  1927. Her

  1928. Husband

  1929. She

  1930. Lost

  1931. Her

  1932. Father

  1933. In

  1934. Law

  1935. She

  1936. Lost

  1937. Her

  1938. Brother

  1939. In

  1940. Law

  1941. And

  1942. Yet

  1943. It's

  1944. To

  1945. God

  1946. That

  1947. She

  1948. Turns

  1949. In

  1950. The

  1951. Middle

  1952. Of

  1953. Her

  1954. Pain

  1955. It's

  1956. To

  1957. God

  1958. That

  1959. She

  1960. Turns

  1961. And

  1962. Here

  1963. She

  1964. Is

  1965. Professing

  1966. Her

  1967. Faith

  1968. And

  1969. There's

  1970. Nothing

  1971. More

  1972. Wonderful

  1973. Than

  1974. Hearing

  1975. Someone

  1976. Say

  1977. That

  1978. For

  1979. The

  1980. First

  1981. Time

  1982. I'm

  1983. Trusting

  1984. The

  1985. Lord

  1986. I'm

  1987. Trusting

  1988. The

  1989. Lord

  1990. But

  1991. I want

  1992. You

  1993. To

  1994. Notice

  1995. And

  1996. That

  1997. Is

  1998. That

  1999. In

  2000. The

  2001. Same

  2002. Sentence

  2003. That

  2004. Ruth

  2005. Commits

  2006. Herself

  2007. To

  2008. The

  2009. Lord

  2010. She

  2011. Also

  2012. Commits

  2013. Herself

  2014. To

  2015. The

  2016. Lord's

  2017. People

  2018. Verse

  2019. 16

  2020. At

  2021. The

  2022. End

  2023. Your

  2024. People

  2025. Shall

  2026. Be

  2027. My

  2028. People

  2029. And

  2030. Your

  2031. God

  2032. My

  2033. God

  2034. And

  2035. That's

  2036. The

  2037. Biblical

  2038. Pattern

  2039. From

  2040. Beginning

  2041. To

  2042. End

  2043. Of

  2044. The

  2045. Bible

  2046. That

  2047. God's

  2048. People

  2049. Are

  2050. Meant

  2051. To

  2052. Be

  2053. Together

  2054. We

  2055. Are

  2056. Sheep

  2057. In

  2058. A

  2059. Flock

  2060. We

  2061. Are

  2062. Soldiers

  2063. In

  2064. An

  2065. Army

  2066. We

  2067. Are

  2068. Stones

  2069. In

  2070. A

  2071. Building

  2072. God's

  2073. People

  2074. Are

  2075. Meant

  2076. To

  2077. Be

  2078. Together

  2079. And

  2080. That's

  2081. Why

  2082. It's

  2083. Sad

  2084. When

  2085. Anybody

  2086. Who

  2087. Professes

  2088. To

  2089. Be

  2090. A

  2091. Christian

  2092. Excludes

  2093. Themselves

  2094. Or

  2095. Stays

  2096. Away

  2097. From

  2098. The

  2099. Fellowship

  2100. Of

  2101. God's

  2102. People

  2103. Ruth's

  2104. Pledge

  2105. Of

  2106. Commitment

  2107. To

  2108. The

  2109. Lord

  2110. Also

  2111. Included

  2112. A

  2113. Commitment

  2114. To

  2115. The

  2116. Lord's

  2117. People

  2118. So

  2119. That's

  2120. Our

  2121. Third

  2122. Point

  2123. The

  2124. Pledge

  2125. The

  2126. Pledge

  2127. We've

  2128. Looked

  2129. At

  2130. The

  2131. Problem

  2132. We've

  2133. Looked

  2134. At

  2135. The

  2136. Parting

  2137. We've

  2138. Looked

  2139. At

  2140. The

  2141. Pledge

  2142. Fourthly

  2143. And

  2144. Finally

  2145. !

  2146. The

  2147. So I'm

  2148. Taking

  2149. That

  2150. Word

  2151. Poverty

  2152. From

  2153. Naomi's

  2154. Statement

  2155. On

  2156. Returning

  2157. To

  2158. Bethlehem

  2159. The

  2160. One

  2161. We

  2162. Read

  2163. At

  2164. The

  2165. Start

  2166. Verse

  2167. 21

  2168. Which

  2169. Says

  2170. I

  2171. Went

  2172. I

  2173. Went

  2174. Away

  2175. Full

  2176. And

  2177. The

  2178. Lord

  2179. Has

  2180. Brought

  2181. Me

  2182. Back

  2183. Empty

  2184. She

  2185. Feels

  2186. Impoverished

  2187. And

  2188. She

  2189. Feels

  2190. It's

  2191. God

  2192. That

  2193. Has

  2194. Impoverished

  2195. Her

  2196. And

  2197. It

  2198. Becomes

  2199. Very

  2200. Clear

  2201. That

  2202. The

  2203. Hardship

  2204. That

  2205. Naomi

  2206. Has

  2207. Experienced

  2208. In

  2209. Moab

  2210. Has

  2211. Taken

  2212. Its

  2213. Toll

  2214. On

  2215. Her

  2216. Even

  2217. On

  2218. On

  2219. Her

  2220. Appearance

  2221. Because

  2222. Look at

  2223. What

  2224. The

  2225. Women

  2226. Of

  2227. The

  2228. Town

  2229. Say

  2230. When

  2231. She

  2232. Returns

  2233. Verse

  2234. 19

  2235. Middle

  2236. Of

  2237. The

  2238. Verse

  2239. When

  2240. They

  2241. Came

  2242. To

  2243. Bethlehem

  2244. The

  2245. Whole

  2246. Town

  2247. Was

  2248. Stirred

  2249. Because

  2250. Of

  2251. Them

  2252. And

  2253. The

  2254. Woman

  2255. Said

  2256. Is

  2257. This

  2258. Naomi

  2259. Is

  2260. This

  2261. Naomi

  2262. It's

  2263. As

  2264. If

  2265. They're

  2266. Not

  2267. Even

  2268. Certain

  2269. If

  2270. This

  2271. Is

  2272. The

  2273. Same

  2274. Woman

  2275. Who

  2276. Left

  2277. There

  2278. Just

  2279. Ten

  2280. Years

  2281. Earlier

  2282. And

  2283. It's

  2284. Not

  2285. It's

  2286. Not

  2287. The

  2288. Same

  2289. Woman

  2290. In

  2291. Many

  2292. Ways

  2293. That

  2294. Had

  2295. Left

  2296. There

  2297. A

  2298. Decade

  2299. Previous

  2300. To

  2301. That

  2302. Because

  2303. Hardship

  2304. Changes

  2305. Us

  2306. Look at

  2307. What

  2308. She

  2309. Says

  2310. Verse

  2311. 20

  2312. She

  2313. Says

  2314. Don't

  2315. Call

  2316. Me

  2317. Naomi

  2318. Because

  2319. Her

  2320. Name

  2321. Meant

  2322. Pleasant

  2323. Don't

  2324. Don't

  2325. Call

  2326. Don't

  2327. Call

  2328. Me

  2329. Pleasant

  2330. She

  2331. Says

  2332. Call

  2333. Me

  2334. Mara

  2335. That

  2336. Name

  2337. Means

  2338. Bitter

  2339. Or

  2340. Bitterness

  2341. And

  2342. She

  2343. Explains

  2344. Why

  2345. For

  2346. The

  2347. Lord

  2348. Has

  2349. Dealt

  2350. Very

  2351. Bitterly

  2352. With

  2353. Me

  2354. And

  2355. Then

  2356. Later

  2357. The

  2358. Almighty

  2359. Has

  2360. Brought

  2361. Calamity

  2362. Upon

  2363. Me

  2364. Naomi

  2365. Felt

  2366. Utterly

  2367. Empty

  2368. Maybe

  2369. You can

  2370. Follow

  2371. That

  2372. Today

  2373. In

  2374. A

  2375. Gathering

  2376. This

  2377. Science

  2378. Maybe

  2379. That's

  2380. How

  2381. You

  2382. Feel

  2383. Today

  2384. Utterly

  2385. Empty

  2386. But

  2387. The

  2388. Wonderful

  2389. Thing

  2390. As

  2391. You

  2392. Continue

  2393. To

  2394. Read

  2395. Through

  2396. This

  2397. Book

  2398. And

  2399. Read

  2400. It

  2401. When

  2402. You

  2403. Go

  2404. Home

  2405. God

  2406. Is

  2407. Just

  2408. About

  2409. To

  2410. Change

  2411. All

  2412. Of

  2413. That

  2414. God

  2415. Is

  2416. Just

  2417. About

  2418. To

  2419. Fill

  2420. Naomi

  2421. With

  2422. Reasons

  2423. To

  2424. Rejoice

  2425. You

  2426. Know

  2427. Sometimes

  2428. Sometimes

  2429. We

  2430. Have

  2431. To

  2432. Be

  2433. Emptied

  2434. Before

  2435. We

  2436. Can

  2437. Be

  2438. Filled

  2439. I'd

  2440. Like

  2441. To

  2442. Quote

  2443. Some

  2444. Verses

  2445. To

  2446. You

  2447. From

  2448. A

  2449. Poem

  2450. Called

  2451. Treasures

  2452. They

  2453. Go

  2454. Like

  2455. This

  2456. One

  2457. By

  2458. One

  2459. He

  2460. Took

  2461. Them

  2462. From

  2463. Me

  2464. All

  2465. The

  2466. Things

  2467. I

  2468. Treasure

  2469. Most

  2470. Until

  2471. I

  2472. Was

  2473. Left

  2474. Empty

  2475. Handed

  2476. Every

  2477. Glittering

  2478. Toy

  2479. Was

  2480. Lost

  2481. And

  2482. I

  2483. Walked

  2484. Earth's

  2485. Highways

  2486. Grieving

  2487. In

  2488. My

  2489. Rags

  2490. And

  2491. Poverty

  2492. Till

  2493. I

  2494. Heard

  2495. His

  2496. Voice

  2497. Inviting

  2498. Lift

  2499. Those

  2500. Empty

  2501. Hands

  2502. To

  2503. Me

  2504. So

  2505. I

  2506. Held

  2507. My

  2508. Hands

  2509. Towards

  2510. Heaven

  2511. And

  2512. He

  2513. Filled

  2514. Them

  2515. With

  2516. A

  2517. Store

  2518. Of

  2519. His

  2520. Own

  2521. Transcendent

  2522. Riches

  2523. Till

  2524. They

  2525. Could

  2526. Contain

  2527. !

  2528. No

  2529. More

  2530. God

  2531. Had

  2532. A

  2533. Plan

  2534. For

  2535. Naomi

  2536. And

  2537. For

  2538. Ruth

  2539. And

  2540. He's

  2541. Working

  2542. Out

  2543. His

  2544. Plan

  2545. Right

  2546. Here

  2547. Even

  2548. Through

  2549. The

  2550. Hardships

  2551. That

  2552. Naomi

  2553. Experienced

  2554. You

  2555. Know

  2556. Now

  2557. Would

  2558. Not

  2559. Be

  2560. A

  2561. Time

  2562. To

  2563. Go

  2564. And

  2565. Visit

  2566. Her

  2567. And

  2568. Quote

  2569. To

  2570. Her

  2571. The

  2572. Scripture

  2573. That

  2574. Says

  2575. God

  2576. Works

  2577. All

  2578. Things

  2579. For

  2580. The

  2581. Good

  2582. Of

  2583. Those

  2584. Who

  2585. Love

  2586. Him

  2587. There

  2588. Are

  2589. Times

  2590. When

  2591. It's

  2592. Not

  2593. Appropriate

  2594. To

  2595. Quote

  2596. A

  2597. Verse

  2598. Like

  2599. That

  2600. But

  2601. It

  2602. May

  2603. Be

  2604. That

  2605. Somewhere

  2606. Down

  2607. The

  2608. Line

  2609. She

  2610. Would

  2611. Come

  2612. To

  2613. Understand

  2614. That

  2615. For

  2616. Ourself

  2617. You

  2618. See

  2619. Trying

  2620. To

  2621. Work

  2622. Out

  2623. Why

  2624. The

  2625. World

  2626. Is

  2627. The

  2628. Way

  2629. It

  2630. Is

  2631. Why

  2632. So

  2633. Much

  2634. Bad

  2635. Stuff

  2636. Happens

  2637. Why

  2638. God

  2639. Allows

  2640. Suffering

  2641. And

  2642. So

  2643. On

  2644. These

  2645. Questions

  2646. Will

  2647. Will

  2648. Just

  2649. Tie

  2650. Us

  2651. In

  2652. Knots

  2653. Sometimes

  2654. Sometimes

  2655. You

  2656. Need

  2657. To

  2658. Just

  2659. Trust

  2660. God

  2661. Rather

  2662. Than

  2663. Question

  2664. Him

  2665. Or

  2666. By

  2667. All

  2668. Means

  2669. Bring

  2670. Bring

  2671. Your

  2672. Tormile

  2673. To

  2674. Him

  2675. Pour

  2676. Out

  2677. Your

  2678. Heart

  2679. To

  2680. Tell

  2681. Him

  2682. How

  2683. You

  2684. Feel

  2685. Tell

  2686. Him

  2687. What

  2688. You're

  2689. Struggling

  2690. With

  2691. But

  2692. Always

  2693. Remember

  2694. That

  2695. God

  2696. Doesn't

  2697. Owe

  2698. Us

  2699. An

  2700. Explanation

  2701. He's

  2702. God

  2703. And

  2704. We're

  2705. Not

  2706. God

  2707. I

  2708. Heard

  2709. A

  2710. Heard

  2711. A

  2712. Story

  2713. Not

  2714. That

  2715. Long

  2716. Ago

  2717. But

  2718. Maybe

  2719. You've

  2720. Heard

  2721. It

  2722. Or

  2723. A

  2724. Version

  2725. Of

  2726. It

  2727. But

  2728. A

  2729. Dad

  2730. He

  2731. Was

  2732. He

  2733. Was

  2734. Working

  2735. From

  2736. Home

  2737. And

  2738. He

  2739. Was

  2740. Looking

  2741. After

  2742. His

  2743. Son

  2744. And

  2745. His

  2746. Son

  2747. Was

  2748. Demanding

  2749. Attention

  2750. And

  2751. Board

  2752. And

  2753. Wanting

  2754. To

  2755. Be

  2756. Entertained

  2757. And

  2758. Dad

  2759. Didn't

  2760. Have

  2761. Time

  2762. To

  2763. Entertain

  2764. !

  2765. Him

  2766. He

  2767. Had

  2768. Work

  2769. To

  2770. Do

  2771. And

  2772. So

  2773. He

  2774. Tored

2775. a page out of a magazine that had a map of the world on it. And he tore the map into pieces and

2776. gave it to his son. And he said, you put that back together the way it should be. And when you're done,

2777. come and show it to me. And he didn't think the boy would be able to do it because he'd never

2778. really seen a map of the world before. But before long, the boy came back, dad, he said,

2779. I've pieced it all together and he'd stuck it with tape. And his dad was shocked.

2780. And he said to him, how did you do that? You don't even know what the map of the world looks like.

2781. And the boy said, yes, but there was a picture of a man on the back. And he said, I recognized him.

2782. And so by looking at him, I was able to put it all back together. He knew the man behind the picture

2783. and that helped to put it together. And friends, if you know the one who is behind the jumbled mess

2784. that may be your life today, that helps. That helps. It might not enable you to make sense of everything,

2785. but how reassuring to know that he's there behind it all. Notice one final thing just as we finish.

2786. Naomi said she was empty and we have no reason to doubt that she was. Her hands were empty. Her heart was empty.

2787. Her head. Her home. But just notice this glimmer of hope in the closing words of the chapter

2788. where it says, they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

2789. There will be food at least. There will be food at the very minimum should be fed.

2790. But we know because we know the rest of the story that there were further blessings to follow.

2791. God was about to do something new in Naomi's life.

2792. God was about to do something new in Jerusalem as well. Amen.

  2793. Let us pray.

2794. Lord, we thank you for your word. We thank you that it just tells us the story as it is, with all its pain.

2795. It doesn't seek to make people out to be better than they are.

2796. It doesn't edit comments that are made about you that we might be uncomfortable with.

2797. We thank you, Lord, that it tells us how people dealt with the troubles that came into their lives.

2798. But we thank you also, Lord, that it reminds us there is a God who is in control,

2799. even when everything seems out of control.

2800. So bless us today. Be with us, each one of us.

2801. We're known to you, Lord. Meet us as you see our need today.

2802. We ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

2803. I'm going to finish singing in the Scottish Psalter, Psalm 126.

  2804. You'll find that on page 419.

  2805. Page 419.

2806. Psalm 126. We're going to sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

2807. When Zion's bondage, God turned back.

2808. As men not dreamed were we, then filled with laughter was our mouth, our tongue with melody.

2809. Psalm 126. The whole of this psalm to God's praise.

2810. When Zion's bondage, God turned back.

2811. When Zion's bondage, God turned back.

2812. As men not dreamed were we, then filled with laughter was our mouth, our tongue with melody.

2813. We hung the hill and said the Lord, great things for them have brought.
