  1. We're going to worship this morning by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 96 in the Scottish Psalter.

  3. We're singing from verse 9 down to verse 13 to the end of the psalm.

  4. Psalm 96 at verse 9.

  5. In beauty of his holiness, so do the Lord adore.

  6. Likewise, let all the earth throughout tremble his face before.

  7. Among the heathens, say God reigns.

  8. The world shall steadfastly be fixed from moving.

  9. He shall judge the people righteously.

  10. We're going to sing from verse 9 to 13 on the tune of Kilmarnock.

  11. We stand to sing.

  12. Let all the earth through a tremble his face before.

  13. Among the heathens, say God reigns.

  14. The world shall steadfastly be fixed from moving.

  15. The world shall steadfastly be fixed from moving.

  16. He shall judge the people righteously.

  17. Let heaven take up before the Lord.

  18. How may the earth rejoice?

  20. singing,

  21. Before the Lord be caused to judge the earth of thee,

  22. He'll judge the world with righteousness, that we will pray for thee.

  23. We'll bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  24. Our gracious Father in heaven, we thank you for this day.

  25. We thank you for the joy of praise to you,

  26. that we are able to gather here in this place or gather around at home as well on such a wild day.

  27. We thank you that we can still join together in worship of you.

  28. And we just pray for your peace over us.

  29. Peace over us as we are sitting here in the pews or sitting at home.

  30. Peace over us, Lord, in these days as we look for your blessing upon us.

  31. Thankful for every remembrance of you that we have through your word and by your spirit,

  32. by the seasons of the year in which we go through.

  33. We are thankful for every reminder we are given that you are God and Lord of all,

  34. the one who made the heavens and the earth and all that is in them,

  35. and the one who, in the midst of all that is so sad in our world,

  36. the sorrows that we suffer, the sadness that we see around us,

  37. has reminded us that you gave your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  38. to come and save his people, to be a saviour for this world.

  39. And so we pray that our thanks and our praise would be lifted up to you today

  40. and in all the days ahead,

  41. that we rejoice not just at this time of year in the celebrations of Christmas,

  42. but that we will recognise that you are with us through all our days and all our seasons

  43. when we put our trust in you.

  44. So, Lord, may you help us in our hearts today to be glad and rejoice in you.

  45. And may you bless us in our homes and in our families and our communities

  46. with your peace and protection over us and your blessing with us.

  47. As we thank you for one another, we thank you for all our young people,

  48. we thank you for our schools and for the Sunday schools

  49. and for all the work that they have been doing throughout this year.

  50. And as they enjoy a time of holiday just now, Lord,

  51. may your blessing and refreshment be upon all involved in that work.

  52. And we thank you too, Lord, for the holiday tweenies and the creche that goes on.

  53. And we just pray, Lord, that you will bless all these activities

  54. that we are involved in for our young people, Lord.

  55. We ask your blessing over each one of them.

  56. So, Lord, be with us now.

  57. Go before us throughout this day.

  58. Keep us safe in it and help us to have our eyes towards you as our Lord and as our God.

  59. As we ask all with forgiveness of our sins.

  60. In Jesus' name.

  61. Amen.

  62. But before some of the young ones go out to the holiday tweenies

  63. and those who are staying in, just a wee word to you.

  64. The last few weeks we've been thinking about Advent and what it means.

  65. And at the holiday club last week,

  66. the young people were making their Advent calendars.

  67. And I don't know if you've been working your way through it.

  68. But day by day, if you've got an Advent calendar,

  69. it might not be the one you had at this holiday club.

  70. Maybe you've got your own at home.

  71. What you do is, as we heard from Alistair Macaulay when he was here as well,

  72. you open up the wee doors and you find out what's inside it.

  73. Now, hands up if you've been doing it one day at a time.

  74. You've been doing it one day at a time.

  75. Yeah, a few hands going up.

  76. Hands up if you're just someone who just,

  77. I'm just going to pop them all off.

  78. I'll just have them all at once.

  79. One day and it's all done.

  80. Hands up if that's the way you do an Advent calendar.

  81. Not hands going up.

  82. That's good.

  83. Because that would spoil it, wouldn't it?

  84. It takes the fun away from the excitement of each day you're counting down towards Christmas one day at a time.

  85. And then you open it up and you see what's in it.

  86. This had a mixture of little gifts or little sweets.

  87. And you use that or you eat that.

  88. And other Advent calendars are full of chocolate.

  89. And you're counting down the day to Christmas Day when you get the last one.

  90. But also in the holiday club, we had this little book that we were working in.

  91. Join the Adventure, as it was called.

  92. So every day of the Advent calendar, there was also a few questions that went with it.

  93. So I hope as well as eating the chocolate or looking at what's inside,

  94. you look at what the questions say.

  95. And inside each part of the Advent calendar, there was a verse or a scripture reference.

  96. And today, the 22nd, the scripture reference was,

  97. A Saviour has been born.

  98. And it's great for us to come together today and remember that.

  99. We remember that every week.

  100. But we remind ourselves today, as we're going on into Christmas week,

  101. remind ourselves each day a Saviour has been born.

  102. And one of the questions says is,

  103. it's speaking about the angels who came and appeared to the shepherds

  104. and said there's good news of great joy.

  105. A Saviour is born.

  106. It says, who did the angels say the good news was for?

  107. Who was the good news for?

  108. Was it just certain people?

  109. Was it just them?

  110. No.

  111. It was for the whole world.

  112. And not just them, but every day of the year.

  113. And all the years of this world,

  114. that is the good news that this world hears.

  115. A Saviour is born.

  116. Now an Advent calendar, it doesn't last very long, does it?

  117. It's only maybe a few days.

  118. The ones we made were 12 days.

  119. The ones maybe you get for December,

  120. you have 25 days counting down to Christmas.

  121. But there's other calendars that maybe aren't as exciting.

  122. Here's a calendar from our house.

  123. It's not as exciting, is it?

  124. You can't pop open anything to get a chocolate.

  125. And it lasts all the years,

  126. starting from January last,

  127. at the beginning of this year,

  128. right through we're into December now.

  129. It's not very exciting.

  130. It's got little things written on it.

  131. There it's telling me what day the bins go out.

  132. Not very exciting.

  133. It's at other parts of the calendar,

  134. so maybe there's a dentist appointment

  135. or a doctor's appointment.

  136. Sometimes it'll be marked days of going back to school

  137. or being off school,

  138. days of particular things happening throughout the year.

  139. And it's just the ordinary day-to-day things.

  140. Maybe it doesn't seem as exciting as an Advent calendar.

  141. But if we see what's exciting about the Advent calendar,

  142. not the chocolates or the little treats you get,

  143. but a reminder that a Saviour is born.

  144. And if we see that in Advent,

  145. counting down to Christmas,

  146. then we enjoy every day of the year.

  147. It doesn't seem as exciting putting out the bins,

  148. but even that can be exciting if we're trusting Jesus.

  149. Everything we do can be exciting

  150. when we're trusting Jesus.

  151. Whatever we're doing is exciting

  152. when we know that God sent a Saviour to this world.

  153. And when we trust in Him,

  154. we look to Him, we believe in Him,

  155. then we rejoice every day of the year,

  156. no matter what is going on.

  157. So may we remember today

  158. and in all the days ahead,

  159. a Saviour who is born,

  160. who is Christ the Lord.

  161. He has come that we might have life in Him

  162. and enjoy life to the full.

  163. So may you enjoy this week in the holiday times,

  164. but may you enjoy every day

  165. as we, God willing, go into a new year

  166. as we start a new calendar

  167. with all the ordinary things that are going on.

  168. May we rejoice in the Lord who is good to us.

  169. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  170. Our Father, which art in heaven,

  171. hallowed be thy name.

  172. Thy kingdom come.

  173. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  174. Give us this day our daily bread

  175. and forgive us our debts

  176. as we forgive our debtors.

  177. And lead us not into temptation,

  178. but deliver us from evil.

  179. For thine is the kingdom,

  180. the power,

  181. and the glory forever.

  182. Amen.

  183. We're going to sing again to God's praise

  184. now in Psalm 46a.

  185. Sing Psalm's version,

  186. Psalm 46a.

  187. And this is from verse 7

  188. down to verse 11.

  189. Psalm 46a, page 60 of the psalm books,

  190. a tune is Evan.

  191. We're going to sing from verse 7

  192. down to the end of the psalm.

  193. And these, the two verses

  194. at the beginning and the end

  195. that remind us of that great promise of God

  196. that the Lord Almighty is with us

  197. to strengthen and sustain.

  198. For Jacob's God,

  199. our strong defense and fortress,

  200. will remain.

  201. So we're going to sing from verse 7

  202. down to the end of the psalm.

  203. We stand to sing to God's praise.

  204. Amen.

  205. For Jacob's God, our strong defense,

  206. and fortress will remain.

  207. Come, see the words the Lord has done,

  208. the judgments He commands,

  209. the desolations He has brought,

  210. to pass in many lands.

  211. In every land throughout the earth,

  212. in the midst of all great seas,

  213. He shatters,

  214. The Lord's cross and spirit and shield and brings its great peace.

  215. Be still and know that I am God on earth exalted high.

  216. And all the nations of the world, my name will glorify.

  217. The Lord Almighty is with us to strengthen and sustain.

  218. For Jacob's God has strong defense and fortress will remain.

  219. Amen.

  220. I'm reading at verse 13, reading into chapter 5, down to verse 11.

  221. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

  222. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

  223. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

  224. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the sound of the trumpet of God.

  225. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

  226. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

  227. And so we will always be with the Lord.

  228. Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  229. Now, concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you.

  230. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

  231. While people are saying there is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman.

  232. And they will not escape.

  233. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.

  234. For you are all children of light, children of the day.

  235. We are not of the night or of the darkness.

  236. So then, let us not sleep as others do.

  237. But let us keep awake and be sober.

  238. For those who sleep, sleep at night.

  239. And those who get drunk are drunk at night.

  240. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love.

  241. And for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

  242. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  243. who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we might live with him.

  244. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

  245. Amen.

  246. And may the Lord bless that reading from his word.

  247. We'll again just engage in a word of prayer.

  248. Let us pray.

  249. Our gracious Father in heaven, we do thank you for your word.

  250. And we thank you for the reminder in these readings that we have had from chapter 4 and into chapter 5

  251. that both end with that word to encourage one another.

  252. And we thank you that we can do so, basing that on the foundation of your truth,

  253. the word of God, which is the foundation for life and for all that we do,

  254. and for all that lies ahead of us, Lord, for all eternity.

  255. Your word of truth is there to guide us and direct us into the paths of life and into the ways of salvation.

  256. And we thank you for the great reminders that your word gives to us.

  257. As we think of the verse that we were sharing with the children,

  258. that to you is born this day in the city of David a saviour who is Christ the Lord.

  259. We thank you that there is a saviour who has come,

  260. that we have had that first advent where he came into this world to save his people.

  261. And we were reminded through his names that he was given Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  262. We are thankful for that promise that remains to this day.

  263. The promise that we have sung about in Psalm 46,

  264. as well, that the Lord Almighty is with us to strengthen and sustain.

  265. We thank you that there is that promise for each day of our lives.

  266. And we pray, Lord, that through faith you might bring us to lean upon you and to trust in you

  267. and the one who you have given for our salvation.

  268. And we do pray, Lord, that we would know what it is to have your light upon us.

  269. We know the world has so much darkness in it.

  270. There is so much evil, so much sin, so much going on around us, Lord,

  271. that leaves the world in so much pain and anxiety and fear.

  272. We see it day by day, O Lord, when we think of all the different things that are going on,

  273. whether it's natural disasters or war or just individual situations that we see where grief and sorrow comes in.

  274. And each and every day we hear of something new.

  275. And, Lord, we know that in this world we will have troubles,

  276. that the Lord Jesus himself reminded us of that.

  277. But we thank you that there is hope in him,

  278. that as he came into this world, as he was born as a man,

  279. as he lived in this world among the people,

  280. as he saw their great needs, as he saw their sorrows and sadness,

  281. he was able to say that they could be of good courage and we could be of good courage

  282. because he has overcome the world.

  283. And we thank you that his life led him to that place

  284. where not just he lived for his people and among his people,

  285. but that he died for his people,

  286. that he gave his life as a ransom for many.

  287. And as we are read in these words before us today,

  288. we are reminded of another Advent,

  289. another time when the Lord will return,

  290. that he will come to take his people to himself.

  291. And may we see that message today in the midst of everything else that's going on as well,

  292. as we think of counting down to Christmas Day

  293. and so much that takes our attention just now.

  294. May we remind ourselves and be reminded through your word and by your spirit,

  295. there is another great day of the Lord to come,

  296. a day that we do not know when it will be,

  297. and yet a day that we are instructed and guided to be ready for.

  298. And so we pray, Lord, for your spirit to help us to that end,

  299. to help us to know that our lives,

  300. which seem to maybe have such a distance ahead for us,

  301. that we are so indebted to you for the life that you give,

  302. but we are so aware too, Lord,

  303. of how quickly circumstances can change.

  304. And so we pray today, Lord, that you will help us

  305. by your spirit, by your grace,

  306. to know your love towards us,

  307. to know your warnings towards us,

  308. and to know your grace that is able to save.

  309. So may you bless us and keep us and watch over us,

  310. watch over all who are so busy at this time,

  311. traveling to and fro.

  312. We know that so many plans have been disrupted

  313. with the weather over these last few days.

  314. Many people will be longing to maybe get away to family

  315. or come home to family.

  316. We pray for safety and help to all who are in that position.

  317. We pray for safety and help to those who are involved

  318. in all the aspects of traveling,

  319. whether it's by plane or boat or train or car.

  320. Whatever it might be, Lord,

  321. we thank you for all who look after us

  322. and look out for us in that way.

  323. We pray your blessing on all who are involved

  324. in all of these things for safety in the midst of it all.

  325. We do pray, Lord, for these days ahead,

  326. for your peace and protection over us

  327. as so many families come to enjoy a time together.

  328. May we remember the joy of family and friendship

  329. and encouragement to one another in that.

  330. But may we give praise and thanks to you above all,

  331. for you're the giver of every good and perfect gift.

  332. And so we pray, Lord, that your spirit

  333. will be in the midst of all that we do.

  334. Remember those who are maybe lonely at this time,

  335. those who have maybe no family or friends around them,

  336. those who feel very isolated,

  337. for those whom this time of year is a difficult

  338. and even a painful time of year,

  339. especially those who maybe come to a first Christmas

  340. without loved ones.

  341. We know, Lord, that there are all these times

  342. when grief and sorrow comes,

  343. maybe in an overwhelming way.

  344. But we pray, Lord, for your comfort

  345. and for your blessing to be in the midst of it.

  346. Thankful for those who we have read of

  347. that are assured that to be absent from the body

  348. is to be home with the Lord,

  349. that there is that hope,

  350. that we do not grieve without hope,

  351. for there is hope in Christ.

  352. And so we pray, Lord, for your comfort

  353. and for your grace towards us.

  354. Pray for those who are unwell,

  355. for those who are struggling with ill health

  356. in homes or hospitals or at their own homes,

  357. for those who are concerned for loved ones,

  358. for those whose hearts are heavy just now, Lord,

  359. maybe with great burdens of loved ones upon them.

  360. We thank you that we are able to cast our cares upon you.

  361. That prayer is such a wonderful gift

  362. in the midst of these times.

  363. And maybe when we feel we cannot pray,

  364. we thank you for those who pray for us and with us.

  365. And so, Lord, we pray that you would bless us and keep us

  366. and make your face to shine upon us

  367. and upon your world,

  368. upon all the nations at this time,

  369. that we would bring peace in the midst of all

  370. the troubles that we see surrounding us.

  371. Guide us, then, we pray.

  372. Be with us in this day.

  373. May we rejoice in your goodness

  374. as we worship you,

  375. as we fellowship with one another this morning

  376. and also this evening too.

  377. And in the service,

  378. be with Kenny I as he leads it

  379. and in our fellowship in the evening as well.

  380. May you be pleased to bless us

  381. in the midst of all that we do

  382. and to rejoice in your goodness to us

  383. in the hope of the gospel

  384. and the salvation that is in Christ.

  385. Hear our prayers and continue with us now

  386. as all we ask.

  387. We ask the forgiveness of our sins

  388. in Jesus' precious name.

  389. Amen.

  390. Amen.

  391. We're going to worship God

  392. by singing to his praise again

  393. in Psalm 20

  394. in the Scottish Psalter,

  395. page 224.

  396. Psalm 20.

  397. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 6.

  398. The tune is St. Andrew.

  399. Psalm 20 at verse 1, page 224.

  400. We'll sing from verse 1 to 6.

  401. To God's praise we stand to sing.

  402. Amen.

  403. Amen.

  404. Let the singing,

  405. O let him have sent from above,

  406. and on his sanctuary.

  407. From Zion is the holy hill,

  408. let him give strength to lead.

  409. Let him remember all my gifts,

  410. accept thy sacrifice,

  411. and may thy hearts wish and fulfill

  412. thy thoughts and counsel wise.

  413. In thy salvation we will join,

  414. in our God's name we will.

  415. This may our banners and the Lord,

  416. thy prayers all fulfill.

  417. The Lord, thy God,

  418. his kingdom say,

  419. he from his holy hand,

  420. will hear him with the saving strength,

  421. by his own right can give.

  422. Amen.

  423. Well, you can turn back with me to a reading,

  424. in particular in chapter 5 of 1 Thessalonians.

  425. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  426. We're going to look at this section,

  427. verse 1 to verse 11,

  428. although it begins really at verse 13 of chapter 4,

  429. but there's two separate sides to what the Thessalonians are looking for,

  430. or asking for from Paul here.

  431. In verse 13 to the end of chapter 4,

  432. they're asking,

  433. what's the coming of the Lord going to be like?

  434. Paul speaks about the sound of the trumpet,

  435. how he's going to come in this way.

  436. He's not going to forget his people at all.

  437. He's going to come for them.

  438. But then in the second part,

  439. we're looking at this morning in chapter 5,

  440. it's more when is it going to be?

  441. When is it going to take place?

  442. Advent is the season that we've been hearing about so much just now.

  443. Advent is a countdown,

  444. but today we're thinking of Advent with a twist,

  445. if you like.

  446. We've been thinking very much about the Advent

  447. of the first coming of Christ.

  448. This time of year,

  449. when that's what's being remembered by so many people

  450. around the world,

  451. that God sent his Son into this world,

  452. that a Savior would be born into this world,

  453. that that was a countdown to remembering

  454. that God has sent his Son.

  455. But Advent is all about counting down.

  456. Counting down to an event,

  457. to something.

  458. And it's something that we're often doing.

  459. All of us are doing it.

  460. Maybe every day of the year,

  461. we're counting down to something.

  462. We're counting down to maybe when holidays will come.

  463. I'm sure many teachers and pupils

  464. are counting down the days

  465. till the Christmas holidays would come,

  466. and they've arrived.

  467. And there's a sense of relief in that,

  468. a sense of joy,

  469. a time to relax,

  470. and to enjoy a time of holiday.

  471. Work,

  472. closing down for this period of Christmas

  473. and into the new year,

  474. it's a sense of counting down towards that,

  475. and that time comes,

  476. and you're able to relax a bit more.

  477. And all throughout the year,

  478. there's a sense of counting down

  479. to different things that might be going on

  480. in our lives,

  481. counting down to birthdays,

  482. counting down to weddings,

  483. just counting down to different times

  484. and events in our life.

  485. And if we're counting down,

  486. it means that we're looking forward

  487. to something.

  488. The Advent calendars

  489. that we've been thinking about,

  490. they're counting down to Christmas Day,

  491. and when we remember

  492. that God sent His Son.

  493. So we're counting down

  494. to a particular thing.

  495. We're counting down to the holidays.

  496. We're counting down to that last day

  497. when we come out of school

  498. or the workplace for a time

  499. and enjoy a time of holiday.

  500. We're looking forward to something.

  501. Advent is about counting down

  502. to a particular situation.

  503. Well, another Advent situation

  504. is what we have here

  505. in 1 Thessalonians.

  506. And as I say,

  507. particularly the end of chapter 4

  508. and into chapter 5 here,

  509. we have an Advent

  510. of something else

  511. that is going to happen.

  512. Not looking to the coming of the Lord

  513. in the first place

  514. where God sent His Son into the world.

  515. That has happened.

  516. But we're looking to another Advent,

  517. to another time

  518. when the Lord will return.

  519. The day of the Lord

  520. as the heading is there

  521. in your ESV Bible of chapter 5.

  522. The day when the Lord will return.

  523. And the church at Thessalonica

  524. was like,

  525. it was an early church.

  526. It was a church that was young in the faith

  527. and therefore it had many questions.

  528. Many things that they'd maybe known

  529. or learned before

  530. that were very different now

  531. to the gospel that they were hearing.

  532. The good news of Jesus

  533. and the salvation that He brought.

  534. So there was a very different teaching

  535. that they were hearing.

  536. And you see it especially there

  537. in chapter 4

  538. when it's speaking about those

  539. who have already passed away.

  540. Their understanding before this

  541. would maybe,

  542. well, that's it.

  543. They're gone.

  544. They're forgotten about.

  545. But Paul says,

  546. no, they're not forgotten about.

  547. They've gone,

  548. but they will come.

  549. Again, they will return.

  550. The Lord will return

  551. and take them to Himself.

  552. And so there's this wonder

  553. of the gospel

  554. that God

  555. not just sent His Son

  556. into this world,

  557. but they sent them

  558. with a purpose

  559. to save His people.

  560. And that this salvation

  561. is not just for this life,

  562. but it's for eternity.

  563. And that He is going

  564. to come again.

  565. And this then leads into

  566. the second question

  567. that they have.

  568. And that is the question,

  569. well,

  570. if this is to be so,

  571. when?

  572. When will it be?

  573. Can we count down the days

  574. until this will happen?

  575. When we think of Advent

  576. counting down,

  577. it's with a particular day in mind.

  578. We have a particular number of days

  579. we're counting down towards.

  580. But is that something

  581. that we can have

  582. in this situation,

  583. the coming of the Lord?

  584. That's the question

  585. that they have.

  586. When will this be?

  587. Is it a question

  588. you have today?

  589. In the midst of everything,

  590. all the preparation

  591. for Christmas just now

  592. and coming together

  593. as families,

  594. all being well

  595. on Christmas Day

  596. and enjoying this season

  597. of holiday,

  598. is the question you have,

  599. when will the Lord

  600. come again?

  601. Or is that just pushed

  602. to the back

  603. of your minds?

  604. How often do you ask

  605. the question,

  606. or do you ever

  607. ask the question,

  608. I wonder,

  609. when will the Lord

  610. come again?

  611. Or even maybe the question is,

  612. will he come again?

  613. So many people

  614. have that kind of attitude

  615. where they think,

  616. well, we're seeing the world

  617. in so much chaos,

  618. so much pain,

  619. so much grief

  620. and heartache

  621. for so many people.

  622. Surely if the Lord

  623. was going to come,

  624. he would have come by now,

  625. but he would write

  626. all of these things.

  627. And so the coming

  628. of the Lord

  629. is dismissed

  630. as it will not happen.

  631. As we think

  632. of counting down

  633. the days,

  634. these days

  635. towards Christmas,

  636. as we think

  637. of counting down

  638. towards the coming

  639. of the Lord,

  640. may we see

  641. that we are to remember

  642. not just that

  643. he has come,

  644. but that he will come

  645. again.

  646. And this is not

  647. to take the joy

  648. out of Christmas,

  649. because the more

  650. we understand

  651. that he came

  652. in the first place

  653. as a saviour

  654. for the world,

  655. and the more

  656. that we understand

  657. that he will come again,

  658. the more we are able

  659. to rejoice

  660. in the praise

  661. that he has come

  662. to remember us,

  663. and that he will come

  664. to take us

  665. to himself.

  666. To enjoy Christmas

  667. is not to have

  668. everything ready

  669. for this Wednesday,

  670. but it's to have

  671. everything ready

  672. for each day of life,

  673. living in light

  674. of the fact

  675. that the Lord

  676. will return.

  677. It's not about

  678. one day,

  679. but every day.

  680. And so there's

  681. three things

  682. in this passage

  683. I want us

  684. to be aware

  685. of at this time.

  686. Three things

  687. that Paul

  688. answers in light

  689. of the questions

  690. that they have.

  691. And he puts it

  692. in this way,

  693. the first thing

  694. is to be aware

  695. of the seasons.

  696. He speaks there

  697. in verse 1

  698. of,

  699. now concerning

  700. the times

  701. of the seasons,

  702. brothers.

  703. So he wants them

  704. to be aware

  705. of the seasons.

  706. The second thing

  707. is to be aware

  708. of the situation.

  709. In verse 4

  710. he says,

  711. but you are not

  712. in darkness.

  713. To be aware

  714. of the situation.

  715. And then the third

  716. thing is

  717. to be aware

  718. of the solution.

  719. In verse 8

  720. he says,

  721. but since we belong

  722. to the day,

  723. let us be sober,

  724. having put on

  725. the breastplate

  726. of faith

  727. and love

  728. and for a helmet

  729. the hope

  730. of salvation.

  731. So there is

  732. to be aware

  733. of the seasons,

  734. to be aware

  735. of the situation

  736. and to be aware

  737. of the solution.

  738. And so the first

  739. thing we want to see

  740. is to be aware

  741. of the seasons.

  742. The people

  743. in Thessalonica

  744. they had questions.

  745. Questions are

  746. quite natural

  747. for every one

  748. of us to have.

  749. We all have

  750. questions of

  751. different things.

  752. And when it comes

  753. to questions

  754. about faith,

  755. when it comes

  756. to questions

  757. about eternity,

  758. we're so often

  759. looking for answers,

  760. but where are we

  761. going to find

  762. the answers?

  763. Well the people

  764. in Thessalonica

  765. they had already

  766. been taught

  767. different things,

  768. but now they're

  769. hearing a new

  770. teaching about

  771. Christ who has

  772. come.

  773. And they want

  774. to know more.

  775. And so they bring

  776. their questions

  777. to Paul.

  778. They bring their

  779. questions to him

  780. in the hope

  781. that he will be

  782. able to answer

  783. the questions

  784. that they have.

  785. And there are

  786. some questions

  787. as you see

  788. as you read

  789. through Paul's letters,

  790. not just this one,

  791. that he answers

  792. many of the

  793. questions that

  794. people have

  795. about faith.

  796. People still

  797. have to this

  798. day about faith

  799. and what it

  800. means.

  801. But there's

  802. one question

  803. that almost

  804. just seems

  805. unanswerable.

  806. They're trying

  807. to pinpoint

  808. something here.

  809. The end of

  810. chapter 4

  811. they've heard

  812. what the day

  813. of the Lord's

  814. return is going

  815. to be like.

  816. It's going

  817. to be amazing

  818. in so many

  819. different ways.

  820. But now

  821. they've got

  822. this question

  823. when?

  824. When will

  825. this be?

  826. When will

  827. God return?

  828. Now why

  829. would they be

  830. asking this

  831. question?

  832. Well surely

  833. it would help

  834. them to prepare

  835. for his return

  836. if they knew

  837. when he was

  838. coming.

  839. If we're

  840. looking ahead

  841. to something,

  842. if we're

  843. preparing for

  844. something,

  845. whatever it

  846. might be,

  847. whether it's

  848. Christmas or

  849. holidays or

  850. weddings,

  851. whatever it

  852. might be,

  853. if we've got

  854. a date in

  855. mind,

  856. we're able

  857. to work

  858. towards that

  859. date.

  860. We're able

  861. to make

  862. preparations

  863. in light

  864. of the

  865. moment of

  866. time and

  867. how much

  868. time we

  869. have left

  870. to prepare.

  871. So they're

  872. saying to

  873. Paul here,

  874. wouldn't it

  875. help us to

  876. know when

  877. Jesus is

  878. going to

  879. come again?

  880. So therefore

  881. we will be

  882. able to

  883. prepare ourselves

  884. in the right

  885. manner for

  886. his coming,

  887. his second

  888. coming,

  889. his second

  890. advent.

  891. Think to

  892. yourself just

  893. now,

  894. what difference

  895. would it

  896. make if

  897. you knew

  898. what day

  899. the Lord

  900. was coming

  901. again for

  902. the second

  903. time?

  904. What would

  905. you do

  906. differently

  907. in your

  908. life if

  909. you knew,

  910. for example,

  911. that he was

  912. coming two

  913. years today?

  914. What would

  915. you change?

  916. What would

  917. you alter in

  918. your life?

  919. Would you

  920. think, no,

  921. I don't have

  922. to change

  923. anything,

  924. I'm quite

  925. happy the way

  926. things are,

  927. I'll be

  928. ready when

  929. he comes?

  930. If you're a

  931. Christian,

  932. you would

  933. hopefully have

  934. that hope.

  935. You would

  936. say, well,

  937. I know I

  938. am ready

  939. for his

  940. coming.

  941. But if

  942. not, if

  943. you had

  944. said, well,

  945. two years

  946. today is

  947. going to

  948. come, how

  949. would that

  950. change your

  951. life?

  952. Would you

  953. think, well,

  954. I've got

  955. more time to

  956. do my own

  957. things now

  958. because I

  959. know exactly

  960. when he's

  961. coming.

  962. I'll spend

  963. maybe 18

  964. months just

  965. doing what I

  966. want to do,

  967. fulfilling my

  968. own desires,

  969. and then maybe

  970. the last six

  971. months, then

  972. I'll start

  973. getting ready

  974. for the

  975. Lord's

  976. return.

  977. then I'll

  978. start making

  979. things right

  980. in that

  981. sense.

  982. Is that

  983. the way

  984. you would

  985. live if

  986. you knew

  987. a date

  988. when he

  989. was coming?

  990. It's

  991. certainly

  992. not the

  993. way you

  994. should

  995. live.

  996. Because even

  997. if we were

  998. told and we

  999. knew and we

  1000. don't, we

  1001. had two

  1002. years till

  1003. he came.

  1004. The reality

  1005. is we

  1006. might not

  1007. have two

  1008. years.

  1009. We might

  1010. not have two

  1011. weeks, two

  1012. days, two

  1013. hours, because

  1014. we don't

  1015. know what

  1016. will happen

  1017. in our

  1018. lives.

  1019. And so

  1020. it would

  1021. be foolish

  1022. to live

  1023. in a

  1024. sense of

  1025. Advent,

  1026. counting

  1027. down with

  1028. that mindset.

  1029. That would

  1030. be wrong.

  1031. And so

  1032. what Paul

  1033. says here

  1034. is he

  1035. answers the

  1036. question about

  1037. well when

  1038. is this

  1039. going to

  1040. be?

  1041. He says

  1042. now concerning

  1043. the times

  1044. and the

  1045. seasons,

  1046. brothers,

  1047. you have

  1048. no need

  1049. to have

  1050. anything

  1051. written to

  1052. you,

  1053. for you

  1054. yourselves

  1055. are fully

  1056. aware.

  1057. You already

  1058. know the

  1059. answer he's

  1060. saying here.

  1061. And so

  1062. do many

  1063. of you,

  1064. I'm sure

  1065. you know

  1066. the answer

  1067. to this

  1068. question.

  1069. When will

  1070. the Lord

  1071. come?

  1072. Well, we

  1073. realize it's

  1074. not a date.

  1075. It's not a

  1076. day that we

  1077. can count

  1078. down towards.

  1079. He says

  1080. for you

  1081. yourself are

  1082. fully aware

  1083. that the

  1084. day of the

  1085. Lord will

  1086. come like

  1087. a thief

  1088. in the

  1089. night.

  1090. It's going

  1091. to come

  1092. suddenly.

  1093. The reason

  1094. that he's

  1095. not able to

  1096. answer it

  1097. is the

  1098. same reason

  1099. that it's

  1100. never been

  1101. able to

  1102. be answered.

  1103. In the

  1104. Old Testament,

  1105. even in the

  1106. teaching of

  1107. Christ in

  1108. the New

  1109. Testament,

  1110. it's not

  1111. a day that

  1112. can be

  1113. pinpointed

  1114. with a

  1115. date and

  1116. a time

  1117. and a

  1118. year.

  1119. It's a

  1120. day that's

  1121. described in

  1122. this way

  1123. suddenly,

  1124. like a

  1125. thief in

  1126. the night

  1127. when you

  1128. least expect

  1129. it.

  1130. That's the

  1131. way it's

  1132. described.

  1133. You go

  1134. back to

  1135. Joel in

  1136. the Old

  1137. Testament,

  1138. and especially

  1139. chapter 2,

  1140. and you read

  1141. through that

  1142. chapter,

  1143. and it's

  1144. talking about

  1145. this day

  1146. of the

  1147. Lord's

  1148. return.

  1149. It's

  1150. amazing the

  1151. kind of

  1152. picture it

  1153. gives of

  1154. the way it's

  1155. going to be.

  1156. It's going to be

  1157. an awesome day,

  1158. an amazing day,

  1159. a terrifying

  1160. day,

  1161. a day where the

  1162. people of God

  1163. can rejoice in.

  1164. happen.

  1165. But it's going to

  1166. happen suddenly

  1167. and quickly.

  1168. That's the

  1169. point that

  1170. Joel makes

  1171. very clear in

  1172. the Old

  1173. Testament.

  1174. Jesus himself

  1175. was asked this

  1176. question.

  1177. You think,

  1178. well,

  1179. surely Jesus

  1180. had the

  1181. answer.

  1182. Well,

  1183. you read in

  1184. Mark 13,

    Mark 13:32

  1185. verse 32,

  1186. but concerning

  1187. that day,

  1188. the day of

  1189. the Lord's

  1190. second coming,

  1191. the day of

  1192. his second

  1193. advent,

  1194. or that hour,

  1195. no one knows,

  1196. he says,

  1197. not even the

  1198. angels in

  1199. heaven,

  1200. nor the

  1201. son,

  1202. but only

  1203. the father.

  1204. And so he

  1205. says,

  1206. be on your

  1207. guard,

  1208. keep awake,

  1209. for you do

  1210. not know

  1211. when the

  1212. time will

  1213. come.

  1214. He says

  1215. the same

  1216. in the

  1217. gospel of

  1218. Luke,

    Luke 12:40

  1219. chapter 12,

  1220. verse 40,

  1221. you also

  1222. must be

  1223. ready for

  1224. the son

  1225. of man

  1226. is coming

  1227. at an

  1228. hour you

  1229. do not

  1230. expect.

  1231. We don't

  1232. know when

  1233. it's going

  1234. to be,

  1235. but we are

  1236. to live in

  1237. light of what

  1238. the scripture

  1239. tells us,

  1240. and what

  1241. the scripture

  1242. tells us

  1243. is to be

  1244. ready,

  1245. to be

  1246. aware of

  1247. the seasons,

  1248. he might

  1249. come like

  1250. a thief

  1251. in the

  1252. night.

  1253. December

  1254. the 7th,

  1255. 1941,

  1256. was a

  1257. day,

  1258. the day

  1259. when a

  1260. devastating

  1261. attack

  1262. happened

  1263. in Pearl

  1264. Harbor,

  1265. in Hawaii.

  1266. A day

  1267. started like

  1268. an ordinary

  1269. day,

  1270. a sense

  1271. of peace,

  1272. but a

  1273. day that

  1274. ended in

  1275. complete

  1276. devastation

  1277. for so

  1278. many,

  1279. 2,300

  1280. people,

  1281. or nearly

  1282. that number

  1283. lost their

  1284. lives that

  1285. day.

  1286. And yet

  1287. just a few

  1288. months earlier

  1289. in September,

  1290. someone had

  1291. said,

  1292. a Japanese

  1293. attack on

  1294. Hawaii is

  1295. regarded as

  1296. the most

  1297. unlikely thing

  1298. in the

  1299. world,

  1300. with one

  1301. chance in

  1302. a million

  1303. of being

  1304. successful.

  1305. But what

  1306. happened?

  1307. Devastation

  1308. came.

  1309. Are we

  1310. living in

  1311. a prepared

  1312. state or

  1313. a state of

  1314. denial where

  1315. there's false

  1316. comfort?

  1317. there's two

  1318. ways you

  1319. could look

  1320. at that

  1321. text which

  1322. says the

  1323. day of

  1324. the Lord

  1325. will come

  1326. like a

  1327. thief in

  1328. the night.

  1329. You can

  1330. live like

  1331. that thought

  1332. well a

  1333. thief in

  1334. the night.

  1335. Not every

  1336. house is

  1337. bargained.

  1338. It won't

  1339. happen to

  1340. me.

  1341. And so you

  1342. live in

  1343. denial,

  1344. it's no

  1345. concern.

  1346. But that's

  1347. not the

  1348. way to

  1349. live.

  1350. The way

  1351. to live

  1352. is to

  1353. think the

  1354. Lord will

  1355. come.

  1356. Without

  1357. focus on

  1358. that,

  1359. the Lord

  1360. will come.

  1361. He will

  1362. come to

  1363. you,

  1364. he will

  1365. come to

  1366. me,

  1367. he will

  1368. come to

  1369. us all.

  1370. The Lord

  1371. will come.

  1372. Just like

  1373. he did in

  1374. the first

  1375. time when

  1376. God sent

  1377. his son

  1378. into this

  1379. world and

  1380. people didn't

  1381. expect him,

  1382. didn't receive

  1383. him, didn't

  1384. look at him

  1385. the way they

  1386. should, as

  1387. the saviour

  1388. of the

  1389. world.

  1390. He's going

  1391. to come

  1392. again as

  1393. the judge

  1394. of the

  1395. world.

  1396. Advent is

  1397. about looking

  1398. back, but

  1399. it's about

  1400. looking ahead.

  1401. as well.

  1402. He will

  1403. come like

  1404. a thief in

  1405. the night.

  1406. Be aware

  1407. of the

  1408. seasons.

  1409. But the

  1410. second thing

  1411. we see is

  1412. to be aware

  1413. of the

  1414. situation.

  1415. And we

  1416. see that as

  1417. we move

  1418. on in

  1419. verse 4.

  1420. But you

  1421. are not

  1422. in darkness,

  1423. brothers,

  1424. for that

  1425. day to

  1426. surprise you

  1427. like a

  1428. thief.

  1429. You are

  1430. not in

  1431. darkness.

  1432. This is the

  1433. blessing the

  1434. church at

  1435. Thessalonica

  1436. had.

  1437. And this

  1438. is the

  1439. blessing that

  1440. we have

  1441. today.

  1442. We have

  1443. the word

  1444. of God.

  1445. We have

  1446. the guidance

  1447. of the

  1448. word of

  1449. God.

  1450. The Lord

  1451. has spoken.

  1452. We have

  1453. the gospel.

  1454. The gospel

  1455. that is

  1456. good news

  1457. as we

  1458. hear so

  1459. often at

  1460. this time

  1461. of year

  1462. when the

  1463. angels

  1464. sang

  1465. good news

  1466. of great

  1467. joy as

  1468. saviour

  1469. who is

  1470. Christ

  1471. the Lord.

  1472. That is

  1473. the good

  1474. news.

  1475. But there

  1476. is also

  1477. the warnings

  1478. in the

  1479. scriptures as

  1480. well.

  1481. The warnings

  1482. that we

  1483. have here

  1484. in Thessalonians

  1485. chapter 4.

  1486. For the

  1487. Lord himself

  1488. will descend

  1489. it says in

  1490. verse 16

  1491. from heaven

  1492. with a

  1493. cry of

  1494. command

  1495. with the

  1496. voice of

  1497. an archangel

  1498. and with

  1499. the sound

  1500. of the

  1501. trumpet

  1502. of God.

  1503. It's the

  1504. same message

  1505. that Joel

  1506. had.

  1507. The blessing

  1508. that he was

  1509. to his

  1510. people in

  1511. the Old

  1512. Testament

  1513. when Joel

  1514. in chapter

  1515. 2 says

  1516. verse 1

  1517. blow a

  1518. trumpet

  1519. and sound

  1520. an alarm

  1521. on my

  1522. holy

  1523. mountain.

  1524. Let all

  1525. the inhabitants

  1526. of the

  1527. land

  1528. tremble

  1529. for the

  1530. day of

  1531. the

  1532. Lord

  1533. is

  1534. coming.

  1535. It

  1536. is

  1537. near.

  1538. There

  1539. is

  1540. warning.

  1541. The

  1542. trumpet

  1543. sound

  1544. is a

  1545. warning

  1546. sound

  1547. that there

  1548. is

  1549. danger

  1550. that there

  1551. is

  1552. a

  1553. major

  1554. event

  1555. coming

  1556. and so

  1557. the

  1558. trumpet

  1559. will

  1560. sound.

  1561. But who

  1562. was blessed

  1563. in Joel's

  1564. day?

  1565. Was it

  1566. everyone who

  1567. heard that

  1568. sound?

  1569. No.

  1570. It was

  1571. those who

  1572. took action

  1573. in the

  1574. midst of

  1575. that

  1576. sound.

  1577. Those who

  1578. are blessed

  1579. are the

  1580. ones who

  1581. heed the

  1582. warning.

  1583. And the

  1584. same is

  1585. true for

  1586. ourselves

  1587. today.

  1588. We need

  1589. to heed

  1590. the warning

  1591. of Scripture

  1592. to enjoy

  1593. this season

  1594. and the

  1595. joy of

  1596. it,

  1597. but to

  1598. realize

  1599. too that

  1600. it's

  1601. pointing

  1602. ahead

  1603. to

  1604. another

  1605. day,

  1606. another

  1607. advent,

  1608. another

  1609. coming

  1610. of the

  1611. Lord.

  1612. There

  1613. are

  1614. those

  1615. who

  1616. are

  1617. in

  1618. darkness

  1619. and

  1620. there

  1621. are

  1622. those

  1623. who

  1624. are

  1625. in

  1626. light.

  1627. And it's

  1628. to be

  1629. in

  1630. light,

  1631. that is

  1632. where we

  1633. need to

  1634. find

  1635. ourselves.

  1636. And that's

  1637. what he

  1638. says here,

  1639. you are

  1640. not in

  1641. darkness,

  1642. brothers,

  1643. for this

  1644. day to

  1645. surprise you.

  1646. You know

  1647. it's

  1648. coming,

  1649. he says.

  1650. You know

  1651. he is

  1652. coming.

  1653. So prepare,

  1654. be ready.

  1655. Don't have

  1656. a false

  1657. peace.

  1658. The peace

  1659. that Jeremiah

  1660. spoke of

  1661. in the

  1662. Old Testament

  1663. when he

  1664. said peace,

  1665. peace,

  1666. when there

  1667. is no

  1668. peace.

  1669. We can

  1670. easily think

  1671. we have

  1672. peace,

  1673. but all

  1674. around is

  1675. the trouble

  1676. that we

  1677. don't see

  1678. because we're

  1679. in darkness.

  1680. There's

  1681. a waterfall,

  1682. famous waterfall

  1683. in Africa,

  1684. Victoria Falls.

  1685. It's on the

  1686. border of

  1687. Sambia and

  1688. Zimbabwe.

  1689. A bit like

  1690. the Niagara

  1691. Falls,

  1692. they're world

  1693. famous and

  1694. many people

  1695. go to

  1696. visit them.

  1697. But they

  1698. both have a

  1699. similar thing

  1700. that happens

  1701. as well.

  1702. When there's

  1703. a raging

  1704. torrent of

  1705. water coming

  1706. down the

  1707. falls,

  1708. it creates

  1709. a mist,

  1710. almost like

  1711. a fog that

  1712. we would

  1713. see on a

  1714. calm day,

  1715. and you

  1716. can't see

  1717. properly.

  1718. But people

  1719. often want to

  1720. go and visit

  1721. these because

  1722. it's so

  1723. spectacular.

  1724. And one

  1725. day there

  1726. was this

  1727. man who

  1728. was visiting

  1729. Victoria Falls.

  1730. And he

  1731. was walking

  1732. around a

  1733. pathway that

  1734. skirts the

  1735. gorge.

  1736. And he

  1737. saw a sign

  1738. just towards

  1739. the edge

  1740. of the

  1741. gorge.

  1742. And he

  1743. couldn't see

  1744. it through

  1745. the mist

  1746. that the

  1747. water was

  1748. creating.

  1749. And so he

  1750. decided,

  1751. I need to

  1752. go and see

  1753. that sign,

  1754. see what it

  1755. says in

  1756. case I'm

  1757. missing

  1758. something

  1759. important

  1760. here.

  1761. And so he

  1762. started just

  1763. walking

  1764. towards it.

  1765. It was

  1766. quite muddy,

  1767. it was

  1768. quite slippery,

  1769. but he

  1770. just knew

  1771. he had

  1772. to see

  1773. the sign.

  1774. But as

  1775. he came

  1776. closer to

  1777. the sign,

  1778. as he

  1779. was just

  1780. about at

  1781. it, he

  1782. realised what

  1783. it said.

  1784. And on

  1785. the sign

  1786. it said

  1787. danger,

  1788. crumbling

  1789. edge.

  1790. So the

  1791. more he

  1792. was going

  1793. towards the

  1794. sign,

  1795. the more

  1796. he was

  1797. putting

  1798. himself in

  1799. danger.

  1800. The edge

  1801. of the

  1802. cliffs there

  1803. could just

  1804. collapse.

  1805. And that's

  1806. what it is

  1807. to be in

  1808. darkness.

  1809. darkness.

  1810. We're

  1811. blinded to

  1812. the warnings

  1813. of this

  1814. world and

  1815. we're just

  1816. walking into

  1817. trouble as

  1818. it were.

  1819. But he

  1820. says here,

  1821. but you

  1822. are not

  1823. in darkness.

  1824. And so

  1825. the word

  1826. of God

  1827. guides us

  1828. away from

  1829. the edge

  1830. of the

  1831. cliff and

  1832. it guides

  1833. us towards

  1834. the safety

  1835. that is

  1836. the rock

  1837. that is

  1838. Jesus

  1839. Christ.

  1840. We have

  1841. warnings

  1842. in

  1843. scripture

  1844. again and

  1845. again guiding

  1846. us away

  1847. from danger.

  1848. When you

  1849. look through

  1850. your Bibles,

  1851. do you

  1852. think it

  1853. says more

  1854. of the

  1855. first

  1856. coming

  1857. of

  1858. Christ

  1859. or the

  1860. second

  1861. coming

  1862. of

  1863. Christ?

  1864. I mean

  1865. the first

  1866. coming

  1867. of

  1868. Christ

  1869. was

  1870. such

  1871. a

  1872. monumental

  1873. occasion

  1874. when God

  1875. sent

  1876. his

  1877. son

  1878. into

  1879. this

  1880. world

  1881. as a

  1882. saviour

  1883. for the

  1884. world.

  1885. Do you

  1886. think it

  1887. says more

  1888. of that

  1889. or more

  1890. of the

  1891. second

  1892. coming

  1893. of

  1894. Christ?

  1895. Well

  1896. the ratio

  1897. is about

  1898. eight to

  1899. one.

  1900. But it

  1901. says eight

  1902. times more

  1903. about the

  1904. second

  1905. coming

  1906. of the

  1907. Lord

  1908. than the

  1909. first

  1910. coming

  1911. of the

  1912. Lord.

  1913. And that's

  1914. a reminder

  1915. to us

  1916. of Advent.

  1917. It's great

  1918. to count

  1919. down towards

  1920. Christmas time

  1921. and the

  1922. first coming,

  1923. remembering the

  1924. first coming

  1925. of the

  1926. Lord.

  1927. But it's

  1928. to be

  1929. prepared for

  1930. the second

  1931. coming.

  1932. We are

  1933. not in

  1934. darkness.

  1935. Another

  1936. day that

  1937. people often

  1938. count down

  1939. to was

  1940. that yesterday,

  1941. what was

  1942. significant about

  1943. yesterday was

  1944. the winter

  1945. solstice.

  1946. So as of

  1947. today,

  1948. now the

  1949. days are

  1950. getting

  1951. longer.

  1952. You may

  1953. not see

  1954. it for a

  1955. while,

  1956. but that

  1957. is the

  1958. case.

  1959. Somebody

  1960. said that

  1961. today we'll

  1962. have five

  1963. seconds more

  1964. daylight than

  1965. we did

  1966. yesterday.

  1967. It sounds

  1968. insignificant.

  1969. It sounds

  1970. so small,

  1971. so minute,

  1972. and yet there's

  1973. a difference

  1974. day by day.

  1975. But imagine

  1976. the difference

  1977. between darkness

  1978. and light

  1979. through faith

  1980. in Christ.

  1981. Just a

  1982. glimpse of

  1983. the glory

  1984. of Christ

  1985. and the

  1986. joy of

  1987. his salvation

  1988. makes all

  1989. the difference

  1990. in our

  1991. lives.

  1992. Be aware

  1993. of the

  1994. situation

  1995. that we're

  1996. in.

  1997. There is

  1998. a danger

  1999. of drifting

  2000. away in

  2001. darkness,

  2002. but there

  2003. is a joy

  2004. and hope

  2005. of the

  2006. light

  2007. of the

  2008. gospel.

  2009. We are

  2010. not in

  2011. darkness.

  2012. We have

  2013. light.

  2014. We have

  2015. the gospel

  2016. before us.

  2017. And so

  2018. thirdly and

  2019. finally,

  2020. I just want

  2021. us to see

  2022. here,

  2023. be aware

  2024. of the

  2025. solution.

  2026. Be aware

  2027. of the

  2028. solution.

  2029. And you

  2030. notice that

  2031. verse 4

  2032. has a

  2033. but there,

  2034. but you

  2035. are not

  2036. in darkness,

  2037. so you

  2038. can be

  2039. ready for

  2040. the day.

  2041. Then again

  2042. in verse 8

  2043. it says,

  2044. but,

  2045. but since

  2046. we belong

  2047. to the

  2048. day,

  2049. let us

  2050. be sober

  2051. having put

  2052. on the

  2053. breastplate

  2054. of faith

  2055. and love

  2056. and for

  2057. our helmet

  2058. the hope

  2059. of salvation.

  2060. For God

  2061. has not

  2062. destined us

  2063. for wrath,

  2064. but to

  2065. obtain

  2066. salvation

  2067. through

  2068. our Lord

  2069. Jesus

  2070. Christ.

  2071. So if

  2072. we are

  2073. aware

  2074. that the

  2075. coming of

  2076. the Lord

  2077. could be

  2078. any time,

  2079. and if

  2080. we are

  2081. aware of

  2082. the different

  2083. situations

  2084. that we

  2085. can find

  2086. ourselves

  2087. in,

  2088. the darkness

  2089. or the

  2090. light,

  2091. well the

  2092. final thing

  2093. we have

  2094. to ask

  2095. is,

  2096. what is

  2097. the

  2098. solution?

  2099. What can

  2100. we do?

  2101. How do

  2102. we prepare

  2103. for the

  2104. return

  2105. of Christ?

  2106. You make

  2107. your preparation

  2108. for Christmas

  2109. Day,

  2110. you have a

  2111. shopping list,

  2112. you have a

  2113. list of

  2114. presents,

  2115. a list of

  2116. people you

  2117. want to

  2118. invite,

  2119. you have

  2120. preparations,

  2121. everybody is

  2122. preparing for

  2123. it.

  2124. If you are

  2125. in the

  2126. town or

  2127. around the

  2128. town the

  2129. last few

  2130. days,

  2131. the place

  2132. is busy

  2133. with people

  2134. all getting

  2135. ready for

  2136. that one

  2137. day,

  2138. but you

  2139. wonder,

  2140. are we

  2141. putting as

  2142. much effort,

  2143. as much

  2144. focus and

  2145. much attention

  2146. into preparing

  2147. for this

  2148. day,

  2149. for the

  2150. day of

  2151. the Lord's

  2152. return?

  2153. The solution

  2154. is yes,

  2155. we can

  2156. enjoy life,

  2157. we can

  2158. enjoy the

  2159. blessings of

  2160. families and

  2161. friendships and

  2162. seasons in

  2163. this world,

  2164. but it's

  2165. to be all

  2166. in light of

  2167. the fact that

  2168. the Lord

  2169. will return.

  2170. As Joel

  2171. spoke in

  2172. the Old

  2173. Testament,

  2174. and as

  2175. Paul speaks

  2176. here,

  2177. and as

  2178. Christ

  2179. himself spoke

  2180. about this

  2181. day,

  2182. it was

  2183. always with

  2184. like a

  2185. two-edged

  2186. sword.

  2187. There is

  2188. the threat

  2189. of judgment,

  2190. but there

  2191. is the hope

  2192. of salvation.

  2193. Verse 9,

  2194. for God

  2195. has not

  2196. destined us

  2197. for wrath,

  2198. for judgment,

  2199. if we are

  2200. putting our

  2201. trust in

  2202. him,

  2203. but to

  2204. obtain salvation

  2205. through Jesus

  2206. Christ,

  2207. our Lord,

  2208. who died

  2209. for us.

  2210. And so it

  2211. takes us

  2212. not just

  2213. to the

  2214. cradle,

  2215. to the

  2216. place of

  2217. Christ's

  2218. birth,

  2219. and to

  2220. that first

  2221. advent,

  2222. but it

  2223. takes us

  2224. to the

  2225. cross,

  2226. and to

  2227. the cross

  2228. where we

  2229. are able

  2230. to prepare

  2231. for the

  2232. day of

  2233. the Lord's

  2234. return,

  2235. because there

  2236. we see

  2237. the reason

  2238. Christ came

  2239. into this

  2240. world to

  2241. save his

  2242. people from

  2243. their sins

  2244. was by

  2245. dying on

  2246. the cross

  2247. himself,

  2248. by taking

  2249. the sin

  2250. that we

  2251. have in

  2252. our hearts,

  2253. and by

  2254. giving us

  2255. the hope

  2256. of salvation

  2257. through faith

  2258. in him.

  2259. So there

  2260. is the

  2261. solution.

  2262. Do you

  2263. need to

  2264. hear it

  2265. again?

  2266. You've

  2267. heard it

  2268. how many

  2269. times you

  2270. come towards

  2271. the end

  2272. of another

  2273. year,

  2274. 2024.

  2275. It's hard

  2276. to believe

  2277. you in

  2278. just saying

  2279. it.

  2280. It doesn't

  2281. seem that

  2282. long ago

  2283. since we

  2284. were in

  2285. 19-something,

  2286. but here

  2287. we are,

  2288. 2024,

  2289. the end

  2290. of the

  2291. year again,

  2292. and how

  2293. many times

  2294. have you

  2295. heard this?

  2296. How many

  2297. times have

  2298. you remembered

  2299. the first

  2300. coming of

  2301. the Lord

  2302. and his

  2303. birth into

  2304. this world?

  2305. But how

  2306. important is

  2307. the second

  2308. coming?

  2309. How important

  2310. is the

  2311. second

  2312. advent when

  2313. he comes

  2314. to judge

  2315. the world?

  2316. The Lord

  2317. is coming.

  2318. We remember

  2319. that he

  2320. has come

  2321. and the

  2322. amazement

  2323. of that

  2324. that God

  2325. would give

  2326. his son

  2327. for us.

  2328. But let's

  2329. not forget

  2330. that he is

  2331. coming again.

  2332. The countdown

  2333. is on,

  2334. but it's not

  2335. a date you

  2336. can mark

  2337. on your

  2338. diary or

  2339. on your

  2340. calendar.

  2341. We don't

  2342. know when.

  2343. He will

  2344. come like

  2345. a thief

  2346. in the

  2347. night.

  2348. What's

  2349. the biggest

  2350. stumbling

  2351. block for

  2352. you just

  2353. now?

  2354. To stop

  2355. you from

  2356. being ready

  2357. for this

  2358. day?

  2359. Is it a

  2360. doubt that

  2361. this day

  2362. is not

  2363. going to

  2364. come?

  2365. Or this

  2366. day is

  2367. far in

  2368. the distance?

  2369. This day

  2370. is a day

  2371. I'll prepare

  2372. for later.

  2373. time.

  2374. The biggest

  2375. obstacle is

  2376. this,

  2377. that you

  2378. have plenty

  2379. of time,

  2380. or so

  2381. you think.

  2382. Time

  2383. is not

  2384. in our

  2385. hands.

  2386. It is in

  2387. the Lord's

  2388. hands.

  2389. And the

  2390. Lord says

  2391. today to

  2392. be ready.

  2393. Not just

  2394. ready for

  2395. Christmas and

  2396. this week,

  2397. but ready for

  2398. every day.

  2399. Lived in

  2400. light of the

  2401. Lord could

  2402. return any

  2403. time,

  2404. like a

  2405. thief in

  2406. the night,

  2407. and to

  2408. be ready.

  2409. Not saying

  2410. this to

  2411. take the

  2412. joy out of

  2413. Christmas.

  2414. I'm not

  2415. saying this to

  2416. be the

  2417. scrooge who

  2418. would spoil

  2419. Christmas Day

  2420. for anyone.

  2421. Quite the

  2422. opposite.

  2423. I'm saying

  2424. this so

  2425. that you

  2426. will enjoy

  2427. Christmas on

  2428. every day

  2429. to the

  2430. full.

  2431. Because if

  2432. you live it

  2433. in light,

  2434. not just

  2435. of his

  2436. coming

  2437. in the

  2438. first place,

  2439. but remembering

  2440. he will

  2441. come again.

  2442. That he

  2443. came, as

  2444. he says in

  2445. John 15,

  2446. that we

  2447. would have

  2448. life to

  2449. the full.

  2450. And that

  2451. we would

  2452. see that

  2453. life is

  2454. in him.

  2455. And that

  2456. we would

  2457. put our

  2458. trust in

  2459. him today.

  2460. He is

  2461. the solution.

  2462. Because if

  2463. we put our

  2464. trust in

  2465. him, we

  2466. are ready

  2467. for that

  2468. day.

  2469. Prepare for

  2470. this week.

  2471. prepare for

  2472. time with

  2473. family and

  2474. loved ones.

  2475. Prepare to

  2476. enjoy all

  2477. of these

  2478. things.

  2479. But prepare

  2480. in light of

  2481. the fact

  2482. that he

  2483. will come

  2484. again.

  2485. And when you

  2486. know this,

  2487. and when you're

  2488. ready,

  2489. then you can

  2490. rejoice

  2491. and be

  2492. glad

  2493. in him.

  2494. May he

  2495. bless you,

  2496. may he

  2497. guide you,

  2498. may he help

  2499. you to know

  2500. and to be

  2501. ready for

  2502. his second

  2503. advent.

  2504. let us

  2505. pray.

  2506. Our

  2507. Father in

  2508. heaven, we

  2509. do praise

  2510. and thank

  2511. you for

  2512. the very

  2513. fact that

  2514. you remembered

  2515. your people,

  2516. that you

  2517. sent your

  2518. son into

  2519. this world.

  2520. But we

  2521. thank you

  2522. too for

  2523. the fact

  2524. that he

  2525. will come

  2526. again.

  2527. And we

  2528. thank you

  2529. for the

  2530. word that

  2531. guides us

  2532. to that

  2533. end.

  2534. That is

  2535. not a

  2536. day that

  2537. we are

  2538. aware when

  2539. it will

  2540. be,

  2541. but a

  2542. day that

  2543. we need

  2544. to be

  2545. ready for

  2546. and help

  2547. us to

  2548. prepare our

  2549. lives

  2550. accordingly,

  2551. to look

  2552. to you,

  2553. to trust

  2554. in you,

  2555. and to

  2556. know the

  2557. joy of

  2558. salvation to

  2559. the full,

  2560. not just

  2561. in the

  2562. one who

  2563. was born

  2564. into this

  2565. world,

  2566. but the

  2567. one who

  2568. died on

  2569. the cross

  2570. for our

  2571. sins,

  2572. the one

  2573. who rose

  2574. from the

  2575. grave,

  2576. the one

  2577. who ascended

  2578. into heaven,

  2579. and the

  2580. one who

  2581. will come

  2582. again.

  2583. Look to

  2584. us, we

  2598. to God's

  2599. praise in

  2600. Psalm 43,

  2601. you'll find

  2602. this on

  2603. page 54

  2604. of the

  2605. psalm

  2606. books,

  2607. Psalm 43,

  2608. we'll sing

  2609. from verse

  2610. 3 down

  2611. to the

  2612. end of

  2613. the

  2614. psalm,

  2615. the tune

  2616. is

  2617. Finart,

  2618. O send

  2619. your light

  2620. forth and

  2621. your truth,

  2622. let them

  2623. direct me

  2624. in your

  2625. grace,

  2626. and bring

  2627. me to

  2628. your

  2629. holy

  2630. hill,

  2631. and to

  2632. your

  2645. singing,

  2646. singing,

  2647. singing,

2648. To God my joy and my delight

2649. And I will praise you with the heart

2650. O God, you are my Lord of night

2651. Why are you down as to my soul?

2652. Why are you so disturbed in me?

2653. Trust God, for I will praise you yet

2654. I say you are my glorious King

2655. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my left

2656. We won't use the door to my right this morning

2657. Just because of the wind outside

2658. To stop the drafts coming through the church

2659. So we'll just use the main door and the door to my left

2660. We'll close with the benediction

2661. Now may grace, mercy and peace

2662. From God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit

2663. Rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore

  2664. Amen

  2665. Amen
