  1. We're going to begin our service singing to God's praise in Psalm 98.

  2. !

  3. He has remembered well the covenant he made with him, the house of Israel.

  4. And all the nations of the earth have seen what God has done, our God who brings deliverance

  5. by his right hand alone.

  6. Acclaim the Lord of all the earth, shout loudly and rejoice.

  7. Make music and be jubilant to him, lift up your voice.

  8. With harp make music to the Lord, with harp his praises sing.

  9. With trumpet and with horn rejoice.

  10. Before the Lord, the King.

  11. Let earth, the sea and all in them rejoice triumphantly.

  12. Let streams clap hands and mountains sing together joyfully.

  13. Now let them sing before the Lord who comes to judge the earth.

  14. He'll judge the world in righteousness, the peoples in his truth.

  15. Verses 3 to the end of Psalm 98 and sing psalms.

  16. His steadfast love and faithfulness he has remembered well.

  17. Amen.

  18. His steadfast love and faithfulness he has remembered well.

  19. The covenant he made within the house of Israel.

  20. And all the nations of the earth have seen what God has done.

  21. His steadfast love and faithfulness he has remembered well.

  22. Our God who brings deliverance by his right hand alone.

  23. Acclaim the Lord, O all the earth.

  24. Shout loudly and rejoice.

  25. Make music and be jubilant.

  26. To him lift up your voice.

  27. With harp make music to the Lord.

  28. With harp his praises sing.

  29. With trumpet and with horn rejoice.

  30. Before the Lord, the King.

  31. Let earth, the sea, and all in them rejoice triumphantly.

  32. Let streams clap hands and mountains sing together joyfully.

  33. Now let them sing before the Lord who comes to judge the earth.

  34. He'll judge the world in righteousness, the peoples in his truth.

  35. Let us bow in prayer.

  36. O Lord, as we bow in your presence tonight, we pray for the grace to worship you in a right way.

  37. We give thanks, O Lord, that we're able to sing your word and to be reminded of your steadfast love towards us.

  38. We give thanks that your word reinforces that you are an unchanging God.

  39. You are unchanging in your character.

  40. Unchanging in your purposes.

  41. And we give thanks for that great truth.

  42. It's often hard for us to understand what that is because we are always changing.

  43. Our attitudes change.

  44. Our thoughts change.

  45. Our thoughts change.

  46. The very plans that we make change.

  47. Sometimes, not out of our own making, but we realize that we are constantly in a world of change.

  48. But you are the God who never changes, and we're thankful for that.

  49. Because it means that your promises are absolute guaranteed that what you have said you will do.

  50. It is impossible for God to lie.

  51. And so tonight we rest in these promises, assured that you are faithful to every single one of them.

  52. We pray, Lord, that you will lift up our hearts, lift up our mind beyond ourselves,

  53. because we are so tied to who we are and what we are.

  54. And help us as we are here tonight to focus upon you and to realize that ultimately life is not so much about ourselves,

  55. but it is about you and your glory in this world.

  56. And we pray that we might have the great end in view that we are reminded of,

  57. that our chief end or chief purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

  58. And we pray that that enjoyment might be discovered by each and every one of us.

  59. And help us to realize that it is only in and through the Lord Jesus Christ

  60. that we are able to find this fulfillment and this enjoyment.

  61. So we pray for the faith.

  62. Pray for the faith for maybe some in here who might not already have come to faith.

  63. We pray that they will.

  64. And pray for those who have come to faith,

  65. that they will come to a greater enjoyment of you.

  66. And that every day will be a day where they will come to a greater knowledge of you.

  67. We pray that you will help us in our worship.

  68. And that you will deliver us from the temptations which so often flood our minds as we seek to worship you.

  69. Because the evil one is never far away trying to distract us.

  70. And to take our mind off the truth.

  71. And to think of other things.

  72. And to bring tempting thoughts before us.

  73. And even to cast doubt upon who you are and what you are.

  74. And so we pray Lord that you will grant us that focus as we wait upon you.

  75. We pray to bless this congregation.

  76. We give thanks for its witness and testimony over the years.

  77. And we pray that you will continue to bless us.

  78. That you will do in us and for us more than we could ask or think.

  79. That you will grant your people a greater confidence in you.

  80. A greater strength in the Lord.

  81. We pray that we might have a greater focus upon you.

  82. And a greater understanding of our responsibilities to you and to one another.

  83. We pray Lord that you will bless this congregation particularly at a time of vacancy.

  84. We pray your leading and guiding.

  85. We give thanks oh Lord that you have done so in the past.

  86. And we are persuaded that you will continue to do so.

  87. So grant us the patience to wait upon you.

  88. And grant us the wisdom that only you can give.

  89. We pray your blessing upon Colin who is the intermoderator.

  90. Pray your blessing upon Colin Murdo and Joanne.

  91. And we give thanks for his ministry here.

  92. And the encouragement that he is to us.

  93. And pray to bless them and their family.

  94. Pray for all the office bearers and all their differing responsibilities.

  95. We pray for all who do so much in this congregation.

  96. And we see that week in, week out.

  97. That there are so many things happening.

  98. Good things happening.

  99. And so much work is on behind the scenes.

  100. And so we pray to encourage all your people.

  101. Reminding us that no labour in the Lord is ever in vain.

  102. There are times we think it is.

  103. There are times we can become discouraged.

  104. But your word assures us that it is not in vain.

  105. And that it will all receive its reward.

  106. All that is done in faith in due time.

  107. So we pray that you will bless.

  108. As we say your witness here.

  109. And we pray that for all the congregations in our town and throughout our island.

  110. And indeed throughout our land.

  111. We pray Lord that you will give a gospel boldness to preachers.

  112. And that you will give a gospel boldness to your people.

  113. Because there are so many who do not know who you are.

  114. They don't know the first thing about you.

  115. And we pray particularly at this time of year.

  116. That people who might have for the first time since maybe this time last year any thoughts about you.

  117. That they may indeed have stronger and greater thoughts.

  118. And that your truth might be opened up here and there.

  119. And that people will come to know and to believe.

  120. We pray for those who are struggling in life.

  121. And we pray for those who face health battles.

  122. We pray that you will help them and undertake for them.

  123. Pray for those who are experienced or have experienced the loss of loved ones.

  124. Whether of recent times or in times gone by.

  125. But there is particularly at this time of year an emptiness.

  126. And an empty soreness within the heart.

  127. And we pray that you will give them comfort.

  128. Give them strength.

  129. And give them a sense of your love towards them.

  130. We pray for all our young people.

  131. We give thanks for them.

  132. And we pray that in the young years of their life.

  133. That they will come to know you and to serve you.

  134. And we give thanks Lord for every effort that is made.

  135. To teach our young in the way of the Lord.

  136. Pray for all our different families.

  137. And ask Lord that you will be with them.

  138. And pray Lord for where there may be difficulties within the home.

  139. That maybe others aren't aware of.

  140. That you will come and that you will help.

  141. We pray for the elderly.

  142. And those who are no longer able to get out.

  143. Those who suffer pain in their bodies.

  144. And weakness in their limbs.

  145. And maybe weakness in their mind.

  146. Pray for those who have mental health issues.

  147. We ask Lord that you will give them strengthening in their mind.

  148. And we pray Lord for our hospitals.

  149. For our NH staff.

  150. For all our emergency services.

  151. And our chaplains.

  152. And we pray for our armed forces.

  153. And our chaplains there.

  154. And we pray for order within our land.

  155. Because we live in times where there is so much chaos.

  156. And we pray Lord for wisdom to our leaders.

  157. To those in authority over us.

  158. All grant them Lord.

  159. The wisdom that is from above.

  160. That they will lead us in the right way.

  161. Help us then as we wait upon you.

  162. And to do us good.

  163. And watch over each and every one of us.

  164. Be with the fellowship this evening.

  165. And pray your blessing upon it.

  166. And all those who are prepared for it.

  167. We ask your blessing upon them.

  168. And grant us your grace.

  169. And have mercy upon us.

  170. Cleansing us from each and every sin.

  171. In Jesus name we ask God.

  172. Amen.

  173. I'm going to sing again from Psalm 89.

  174. And this is from the Scottish Psalter.

  175. Psalm number 89.

  176. And we're going to sing from verse 13.

  177. It's on page 3, 4, 5.

  178. Thou hast an arm that's full of power.

  179. Thy hand is great in might.

  180. And thy right hand exceedingly exalted is in height.

  181. Justice and judgment of thy throne are made the dwelling place.

  182. Mercy accompanied with truth shall go before thy face.

  183. O greatly blessed the people are.

  184. The joyful sound that know.

  185. In brightness of thy face, O Lord, they ever on shall go.

  186. They in thy name shall all the day rejoice exceedingly.

  187. And in thy righteousness shall they exalted be on high.

  188. Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in thee.

  189. And in thy favor shall our horn and power exalted be.

  190. For God is our defense.

  191. And he to us doth safety bring.

  192. The Holy One of Israel is our Almighty King.

  193. 13 to 18, Psalm 89.

  194. Thou hast an arm that's full of power.

  195. Thou hast an arm that's full of power.

  196. Thy hand is great in might.

  197. And thy right hand exceedingly exalted is in height.

  198. Justice and judgment of thy throne are made the dwelling place.

  199. Mercy accompany the need with truth shall go before thy face.

  200. O greatly blessed the people are.

  201. The joyful sound that know.

  202. In brightness of thy face, O Lord, they ever on shall go.

  203. They in thy name shall all the day rejoice exceedingly.

  204. And in thy righteousness shall be exalted be on high.

  205. Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in thee.

  206. And in thy favor shall our horn and power exalted be.

  207. For God is our defense.

  208. And he to us doth safety bring.

  209. The Holy One of Israel is our Almighty King.

  210. Let's turn now to read God's word in the gospel of Luke.

  211. Luke's gospel.

  212. Chapter 24, the last chapter.

  213. And we pick up a reading at verse 25.

  214. We know, of course, that this is

  215. where Jesus has joined the two on the road to Emmaus.

  216. And so we pick up on what Jesus is saying at verse 25.

  217. And he, that's Jesus, said to them,

  218. O foolish ones and slow of heart,

  219. to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  220. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things

  221. and enter into his glory?

  222. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  223. he interpreted to them in all the scriptures

  224. the things concerning himself.

  225. So they drew near to the village to which they were going.

  226. He acted as if he were going further,

  227. but they urged him strongly, saying,

  228. Stay with us, for it is two or three evening,

  229. and the day is now far spent.

  230. So he went in to stay with them.

  231. When he was at table with them,

  232. he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.

  233. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him,

  234. and he vanished from their sight.

  235. They said to each other,

  236. Did not our hearts burn within us

  237. while he talked to us on the road,

  238. while he opened to us the scriptures?

  239. And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem.

  240. And they found the eleven,

  241. and those who were with them gathered together,

  242. saying,

  243. The Lord has risen indeed,

  244. and has appeared to Simon.

  245. Then they told what had happened on the road,

  246. and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

  247. As they were talking about these things,

  248. Jesus himself stood among them,

  249. and said to them,

  250. Peace to you.

  251. But they were startled and frightened,

  252. and thought they saw a spirit.

  253. And he said to them,

  254. Why are you troubled?

  255. And why do doubts arise in your heart?

  256. See my hands and my feet,

  257. that it is I myself.

  258. Touch me and see.

  259. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones,

  260. as you see that I have.

  261. And when he had said this,

  262. he showed them his hands and his feet.

  263. And while they still believed for joy and were marvelling,

  264. he said to them,

  265. Have you anything here to eat?

  266. They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

  267. and he took it and ate before them.

  268. Then he said to them,

  269. These are my words that I spoke to you

  270. while I was still with you,

  271. that everything written about me

  272. in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms

  273. must be fulfilled.

  274. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,

  275. and said to them,

  276. Thus it is written,

  277. that the Christ should suffer

  278. and on the third day rise from the dead,

  279. and repentance and forgiveness of sins

  280. should be proclaimed in his name

  281. to all nations,

  282. beginning from Jerusalem.

  283. You are witnesses of these things.

  284. And behold,

  285. I am sending the promise of my Father upon you,

  286. but stay in the city

  287. until you are clothed with power from on high.

  288. Then he led them out as far as Bethany,

  289. and lifting up his hands,

  290. he blessed them.

  291. While he blessed them,

  292. he parted from them

  293. and was carried up into heaven.

  294. And they worshipped him

  295. and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

  296. and were continually in the temple,

  297. blessing God.

  298. Amen,

  299. and may God bless to us

  300. this reading of his own holy word.

  301. We're going to sing again

  302. and sing Psalms in Psalm number 24.

  303. It's on page 28,

  304. Psalm 24,

  305. from the beginning,

  306. verses 1 to 8.

  307. The world and all in it are gods,

  308. all peoples of the earth,

  309. for it was founded by the Lord

  310. upon the seas beneath.

  311. Who may ascend the hill of God

  312. or in his temple stand?

  313. The one who shuns false gods and lies,

  314. who's pure in heart and hand.

  315. He will find favour from the Lord

  316. and from his Saviour grace.

  317. Thus are they blessed,

  318. O Jacob's God,

  319. who truly seek your face.

  320. You engine gates,

  321. lift up your heads.

  322. You doors be opened wide.

  323. So may the King of glory come

  324. forever to abide.

  325. But who is this exalted King?

  326. What glorious King is he?

  327. It is the Lord of strength and might,

  328. the Lord of victory.

  329. 1 to 8, Psalm 24,

  330. the world and all in it are gods.

  331. Amen.

  332. The world and all in it are gods,

  333. all peoples of the earth,

  334. for it was founded by the Lord

  335. upon the seas beneath.

  336. Who may ascend the hill of God

  337. or in his temple stand?

  338. The one who shuns false gods and lies,

  339. who's pure in heart and hand.

  340. He will find favour from the Lord

  341. and from his Saviour grace.

  342. Thus are they blessed,

  343. O Jacob's God,

  344. who truly seek your face.

  345. You ancient gates,

  346. lift up your heads.

  347. You doors be opened wide.

  348. So may the King of glory come

  349. forever to abide.

  350. But who is this exalted King?

  351. What glorious King is he?

  352. It is the Lord of strength and might,

  353. the Lord of victory.

  354. Amen.

  355. Let's turn again for a little

  356. to the chapter we read

  357. in Luke's Gospel,

  358. Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  359. Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  360. Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  361. And at verse 50.

  362. Then he led them out as far as Bethany

  363. and lifting up his hands,

  364. he blessed them.

  365. While he blessed them,

  366. he parted from them

  367. and was carried up into heaven.

  368. And they worshipped him

  369. and returned to Jerusalem

  370. with great joy

  371. and were continually in the temple

  372. blessing God.

  373. Now as we know at this time of year,

  374. there is great focus

  375. upon the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ

  376. and this morning,

  377. Calamurda was looking

  378. at the return

  379. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  380. his second coming into this world.

  381. And tonight,

  382. I want to focus

  383. on Jesus's leaving this world.

  384. This which happened between

  385. his coming first time into the world

  386. and also between his return again.

  387. Now as we know,

  388. at a human level,

  389. partings are never easy.

  390. Whether the parting

  391. is just for a short time

  392. or whether the parting

  393. is going to be forever.

  394. Partings are always difficult

  395. and it doesn't matter.

  396. Of course,

  397. we know that final partings

  398. are things that we never really get over.

  399. But even parting for a short time

  400. is never an easy thing.

  401. And usually,

  402. we find the reaction

  403. is a very heavy heart

  404. and people are sad

  405. and down.

  406. But we find the very opposite here

  407. because this parting

  408. has brought in the disciples

  409. of Jesus

  410. great joy.

  411. That's what we find,

  412. that they return to Jerusalem

  413. with great joy.

  414. And at one level,

  415. we might find that very strange

  416. because here they are

  417. parting from the person,

  418. the one who filled them

  419. with the greatest delight,

  420. the one that they loved

  421. above all others in this world.

  422. And so,

  423. we might say to ourselves,

  424. it's a kind of a strange reaction.

  425. But they are filled with joy

  426. because what they had experienced

  427. and what they were told

  428. produced joy within their heart.

  429. Now,

  430. there was such a contrast

  431. between Jesus' coming

  432. into this world

  433. and his leaving this world.

  434. And yet,

  435. in some ways,

  436. there was also similarity

  437. because

  438. only very,

  439. very few

  440. witnessed

  441. the arrival of Jesus

  442. into this world

  443. when he was born.

  444. Very few.

  445. And again,

  446. it was only a handful

  447. that witnessed

  448. his actual ascension.

  449. And

  450. of course,

  451. when Jesus returns,

  452. it couldn't be more different.

  453. His first time

  454. coming into the world,

  455. as we said,

  456. very few

  457. were witnessed

  458. to his actual birth.

  459. To his leaving this world,

  460. only his disciples

  461. saw him leave.

  462. But when he returns,

  463. everybody

  464. is going to see him.

  465. There won't be one

  466. person alive

  467. when the Lord Jesus Christ

  468. returns

  469. that will have

  470. the slightest bit of doubt

  471. that this is

  472. the Son of God,

  473. that this is

  474. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  475. On that day,

  476. there will be no scoffers,

  477. there will be no mockers,

  478. there will be no agnostics,

  479. there will be no atheists.

  480. Every single person

  481. will be

  482. absolutely

  483. convinced

  484. that this is

  485. the returning

  486. Son of God.

  487. And that

  488. couldn't have been

  489. more different

  490. to how it was

  491. at the beginning

  492. because,

  493. as we know,

  494. when Jesus was born

  495. into this world,

  496. he was born

  497. in an outhouse.

  498. There was no

  499. room in the inn.

  500. There was no place

  501. for Jesus

  502. in the world.

  503. It's very symbolic

  504. in many ways

  505. of how it was.

  506. There was no room

  507. in the inn

  508. because,

  509. from the very start,

  510. this world

  511. had no place

  512. for Jesus.

  513. From the very start,

  514. the world

  515. didn't want

  516. Jesus.

  517. And nothing has changed

  518. because there's no

  519. creed

  520. and there's no faith

  521. that has

  522. suffered more

  523. mocking

  524. and persecution

  525. than the Christian faith.

  526. and down

  527. throughout the centuries

  528. right to this

  529. very day.

  530. And you remember

  531. that, I suppose,

  532. where you see

  533. the focus

  534. more than

  535. anywhere else

  536. is when the crowd

  537. were offered

  538. to choose

  539. between the most

  540. loving,

  541. caring,

  542. tolerant

  543. person

  544. that ever lived

  545. in this world

  546. or else

  547. the riotous

  548. terrorist

  549. who struck

  550. fear in every

  551. heart,

  552. Barabbas.

  553. They chose

  554. Barabbas.

  555. At a human level,

  556. you see,

  557. it's utterly mad

  558. that they chose

  559. a man

  560. who was a terrorist,

  561. a man who caused

  562. total unrest

  563. within the community

  564. over against

  565. the most caring,

  566. generous,

  567. loving person

  568. ever to walk

  569. this world.

  570. their choice

  571. was basically

  572. anybody

  573. but Jesus.

  574. And sadly,

  575. that's still

  576. the way it is.

  577. Get rid of Jesus,

  578. crucify him.

  579. But the ascension

  580. of Jesus

  581. was really

  582. quite a remarkable

  583. thing.

  584. And the disciples

  585. had become used

  586. to seeing

  587. remarkable things

  588. in the life

  589. of Jesus Christ.

  590. They had seen

  591. him walk

  592. on the water,

  593. they had seen

  594. him feed

  595. the 5,000

  596. from five loaves

  597. and two fish.

  598. They had seen

  599. him heal

  600. the paralyzed

  601. and the deaf

  602. and the mute

  603. and the blind.

  604. They had seen

  605. him cast out

  606. demons,

  607. they had seen

  608. him even

  609. raise the dead.

  610. They had seen

  611. him walk

  612. on,

  613. as we say,

  614. walk on the water

  615. and they had seen

  616. him just by the word

  617. calm the water.

  618. Three of them

  619. had seen

  620. him transfigured

  621. and they had

  622. seen him

  623. crucified

  624. and they had

  625. seen him

  626. reappear before

  627. them.

  628. And so,

  629. in many ways,

  630. what happened

  631. was very fitting

  632. for the life

  633. of Jesus.

  634. What they were

  635. able to witness

  636. this extraordinary

  637. departure

  638. out from this

  639. world.

  640. Now,

  641. we know

  642. that there was

  643. a 40-day period

  644. where Jesus,

  645. before this

  646. final ascension,

  647. was appearing

  648. and reappearing

  649. to his

  650. disciples.

  651. And it wasn't

  652. just to the

  653. immediate 11.

  654. He also

  655. appeared to

  656. Mary.

  657. He appeared

  658. to,

  659. as we saw,

  660. the two on

  661. the Emmaus Road.

  662. He appeared

  663. to many

  664. of the other

  665. women as well.

  666. And Paul tells

  667. us that he

  668. appeared to

  669. 500.

  670. And it is

  671. often believed

  672. that in that

  673. 40-day period

  674. that Jesus

  675. was returning

  676. over,

  677. back and

  678. forward,

  679. to the

  680. Father,

  681. but returning

  682. again to

  683. the world

  684. until his

  685. final ascension.

  686. And in this

  687. period of

  688. these 40

  689. days,

  690. he used

  691. that period

  692. to encourage

  693. the church,

  694. to teach

  695. the church,

  696. to restore,

  697. like, for

  698. instance,

  699. Peter,

  700. and to prepare

  701. them for the

  702. future.

  703. And Luke

  704. tells us,

  705. in fact,

  706. in Acts

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  707. chapter 3,

  708. he presented

  709. himself alive

  710. to them after

  711. his sufferings,

  712. by many

  713. proofs,

  714. appearing to

  715. them during

  716. 40 days

  717. and speaking

  718. to them

  719. about the

  720. kingdom.

  721. You see,

  722. the early

  723. church had

  724. to be

  725. witnesses

  726. to the

  727. ascension

  728. of the

  729. Lord Jesus

  730. Christ.

  731. They had

  732. to be

  733. witnesses

  734. to the

  735. real fact

  736. that Jesus

  737. is a

  738. living

  739. saviour.

  740. saved.

  741. Because if

  742. Jesus is

  743. a dead

  744. saviour,

  745. he's not

  746. a saviour

  747. at all.

  748. If Jesus

  749. didn't rise

  750. from the

  751. dead,

  752. Paul tells

  753. us we're

  754. still dead

  755. in our

  756. sins.

  757. If Jesus

  758. didn't rise

  759. from the

  760. dead,

  761. there is

  762. no gospel

  763. message.

  764. And that's

  765. one of the

  766. great

  767. distinctions.

  768. There are

  769. many distinctions

  770. between the

  771. Christian faith

  772. and the

  773. other faiths.

  774. But when you

  775. look at the

  776. leaders of the

  777. others,

  778. they died

  779. and they're

  780. buried and

  781. they remain

  782. buried.

  783. But our

  784. saviour

  785. died,

  786. was buried

  787. and defeated

  788. death and

  789. rose again.

  790. And so the

  791. church has to

  792. be witness to

  793. this fact

  794. that we have

  795. a risen

  796. ascended

  797. saviour.

  798. Now the

  799. thing is that

  800. nobody saw

  801. the risen

  802. Jesus

  803. apart from

  804. his followers.

  805. Nobody of

  806. the world,

  807. no unbeliever

  808. was witness

  809. to the

  810. risen

  811. saviour.

  812. He only

  813. appeared to

  814. his people.

  815. And in a

  816. sense,

  817. that's almost

  818. how it still

  819. is.

  820. Because

  821. until

  822. naturally,

  823. we cannot,

  824. I know it's

  825. by faith,

  826. but naturally,

  827. we cannot

  828. see Jesus

  829. as we are.

  830. We hear

  831. about him,

  832. we know

  833. about him,

  834. but we've

  835. never seen

  836. him in a

  837. way where

  838. we're able

  839. to lay

  840. hold upon

  841. him and

  842. believe in

  843. what he has

  844. done,

  845. that he

  846. has done

  847. it for

  848. us,

  849. and that

  850. he has

  851. by his

  852. work saved

  853. us from

  854. our sins.

  855. It's only

  856. by faith

  857. that we're

  858. able to

  859. see him.

  860. Naturally,

  861. we can't,

  862. and

  863. naturally,

  864. we don't

  865. even want

  866. him.

  867. We don't

  868. think about

  869. him too

  870. much.

  871. We might

  872. think a

  873. wee bit,

  874. but we

  875. don't have

  876. this desire

  877. to have

  878. him as

  879. our Lord.

  880. as I

  881. said,

  882. they saw

  883. no beauty

  884. in him

  885. that they

  886. should

  887. desire

  888. him.

  889. So it

  890. is by

  891. faith,

  892. and by

  893. faith alone,

  894. that we're

  895. able to

  896. see Jesus.

  897. And the

  898. thing is

  899. that I

  900. think every

  901. believer

  902. wishes that

  903. they could

  904. see Jesus

  905. better.

  906. If you're a

  907. believer here

  908. tonight,

  909. I'm sure

  910. deep down

  911. in your

  912. heart,

  913. that's what

  914. you say,

  915. oh Lord,

  916. help me to

  917. see you

  918. better.

  919. And I'm

  920. sure you

  921. think that

  922. everybody in

  923. this church

  924. has a

  925. clearer sight

  926. of Jesus,

  927. that they're

  928. able to

  929. love him

  930. more than

  931. you,

  932. that they're

  933. able to

  934. see more

  935. clearly than

  936. you.

  937. It's a

  938. thing you

  939. long for,

  940. but I

  941. think it's

  942. something that

  943. plagues us

  944. all.

  945. We see,

  946. we're told,

  947. but through

  948. a glass

  949. darkly.

  950. It's a

  951. very dim

  952. vision we

  953. have,

  954. but we

  955. have seen

  956. enough to

  957. accept

  958. and to

  959. believe.

  960. And I

  961. would go

  962. as far

  963. as to

  964. say that

  965. it's only

  966. somebody who

  967. has the

  968. Lord Jesus

  969. Christ in

  970. their heart

  971. that is

  972. troubled by

  973. these thoughts.

  974. Because a

  975. person who

  976. doesn't have

  977. Christ

  978. isn't

  979. troubled by

  980. the fact that

  981. they're not

  982. able to see

  983. him clearly,

  984. that they're

  985. not able to

  986. love him in

  987. the way that

  988. they do.

  989. It's an

  990. evidence of

  991. the very fact

  992. that Christ

  993. is within

  994. you,

  995. that you

  996. have this

  997. desire to

  998. see him

  999. more clearly

  1000. and to

  1001. love him

  1002. more clearly.

  1003. Now,

  1004. Jesus,

  1005. as we see

  1006. here,

  1007. he spoke

  1008. to them

  1009. and he

  1010. taught them

  1011. and he

  1012. opened their

  1013. minds to

  1014. understand

  1015. things that

  1016. they hadn't

  1017. been able to

  1018. understand before.

  1019. This, in a

  1020. sense, was

  1021. kind of their

  1022. finishing school

  1023. where Jesus

  1024. was opening

  1025. their mind

  1026. to understand

  1027. truths that

  1028. he had taught

  1029. them before,

  1030. but they

  1031. hadn't

  1032. grasped.

  1033. And in

  1034. many ways,

  1035. it's similar

  1036. to ourselves

  1037. as we go

  1038. along in

  1039. life.

  1040. There are

  1041. many things

  1042. when we

  1043. start out

  1044. in the

  1045. faith that

  1046. we don't

  1047. properly

  1048. understand.

  1049. In fact,

  1050. even as we

  1051. go on in

  1052. the faith,

  1053. there are

  1054. things that

  1055. we don't

  1056. understand.

  1057. But I'm

  1058. sure along

  1059. the way,

  1060. often you've

  1061. said,

  1062. I get it

  1063. now.

  1064. I'm beginning

  1065. to see

  1066. this now.

  1067. Well, this

  1068. was a

  1069. dawning

  1070. moment for

  1071. the disciples

  1072. because they

  1073. were able to

  1074. understand.

  1075. We know how

  1076. limited their

  1077. understanding was.

  1078. They hadn't,

  1079. even Peter,

  1080. James,

  1081. and John

  1082. hadn't

  1083. grasped the

  1084. significance of

  1085. Christ's mission.

  1086. Yes, they

  1087. believed in him

  1088. as the son of

  1089. God.

  1090. They believed

  1091. completely in him

  1092. as the Messiah,

  1093. but they

  1094. hadn't grasped

  1095. that he had to

  1096. die.

  1097. Peter, in fact,

  1098. tried to talk him

  1099. out of going

  1100. to the cross.

  1101. He's saying,

  1102. put these

  1103. thoughts away

  1104. from you.

  1105. We've said it

  1106. often enough

  1107. before,

  1108. Mary of Bethany

  1109. was the one

  1110. who fully

  1111. understood the

  1112. mission of

  1113. Christ.

  1114. Remember

  1115. where it

  1116. tells us

  1117. that when

  1118. Peter and

  1119. John went

  1120. to the

  1121. grave,

  1122. it tells

  1123. us Peter

  1124. ran into

  1125. the grave,

  1126. but John

  1127. stood at

  1128. the grave

  1129. and he

  1130. believed.

  1131. It was

  1132. like there

  1133. was a

  1134. dawning of

  1135. how this,

  1136. yeah,

  1137. I understand

  1138. now,

  1139. all Jesus

  1140. is teaching.

  1141. It's all

  1142. coming together.

  1143. You know,

  1144. it's often

  1145. like that

  1146. for us.

  1147. Well,

  1148. here was

  1149. a special

  1150. moment for

  1151. the disciples

  1152. as Jesus

  1153. was teaching

  1154. them about,

  1155. this was

  1156. kind of like

  1157. their finishing

  1158. school.

  1159. And those,

  1160. we all have

  1161. to be taught

  1162. because we're

  1163. all serving

  1164. the Lord.

  1165. Wherever you

  1166. are as a

  1167. believer,

  1168. you're serving

  1169. the Lord.

  1170. And we all

  1171. have to have

  1172. a level of

  1173. understanding

  1174. and a level

  1175. of teaching,

  1176. a level of

  1177. knowledge,

  1178. because we

  1179. have to impart

  1180. to others.

  1181. But those

  1182. who are

  1183. sent out,

  1184. they have

  1185. to be

  1186. taught.

  1187. Moses

  1188. had his

  1189. time of

  1190. learning.

  1191. Paul had

  1192. his time

  1193. of learning.

  1194. The disciples

  1195. had three

  1196. years with

  1197. Jesus,

  1198. but here it

  1199. is,

  1200. here now,

  1201. Jesus is

  1202. teaching them.

  1203. And that's

  1204. what we read

  1205. about there

  1206. from verses

  1207. 44,

  1208. 45.

  1209. then he

  1210. opened

  1211. their minds

  1212. to understand

  1213. the scriptures

  1214. and so on.

  1215. And what a

  1216. wonderful insight

  1217. was given

  1218. then.

  1219. And then we

  1220. find Jesus

  1221. heading out

  1222. as far as

  1223. Bethany.

  1224. And this

  1225. was,

  1226. Bethany was

  1227. on the

  1228. slopes of

  1229. the Mount

  1230. of Olives.

  1231. And as

  1232. we know,

  1233. it's often

  1234. been suggested

  1235. that Jesus

  1236. rose,

  1237. ascended

  1238. from Bethany,

  1239. from the

  1240. vicinity of

  1241. Bethany,

  1242. as a

  1243. mark of

  1244. the devotion

  1245. of Mary

  1246. of Bethany.

  1247. Jesus didn't

  1248. ascend from

  1249. Jerusalem.

  1250. They had

  1251. put him

  1252. to death.

  1253. He didn't

  1254. ascend from

  1255. Nazareth,

  1256. where his

  1257. home was.

  1258. They'd

  1259. rejected him.

  1260. He didn't

  1261. ascend from

  1262. Capernaum,

  1263. where he

  1264. did many

  1265. mighty works.

  1266. They again

  1267. rejected him.

  1268. But he

  1269. ascended from

  1270. Bethany,

  1271. which was

  1272. the home

  1273. that he

  1274. loved,

  1275. the family

  1276. that he

  1277. loved,

  1278. Mary,

  1279. Martha,

  1280. and Lazarus.

  1281. Many have

  1282. suggested it

  1283. is as a

  1284. token

  1285. to that

  1286. home that

  1287. it is from

  1288. this vicinity

  1289. that he

  1290. ascended.

  1291. Now,

  1292. of course,

  1293. many of the

  1294. significant

  1295. events in

  1296. Jesus'

  1297. life took

  1298. place on

  1299. hills or

  1300. on mountains.

  1301. His famous

  1302. sermon,

  1303. we find in

  1304. Matthew,

  1305. termed the

  1306. Sermon on

  1307. the Mount,

  1308. still termed

  1309. that to

  1310. this very

  1311. day.

  1312. It was

  1313. on a

  1314. mountain

  1315. that he

  1316. was

  1317. transfigured.

  1318. It was

  1319. on a

  1320. hill that

  1321. he was

  1322. crucified.

  1323. We find,

  1324. in fact,

  1325. that there

  1326. were many

  1327. times we

  1328. find Jesus

  1329. going up

  1330. into the

  1331. mountain to

  1332. pray.

  1333. We find

  1334. many of the

  1335. Old Testament

  1336. saints that

  1337. the mountains

  1338. were significant

  1339. to them.

  1340. We find that

  1341. the Lord

  1342. appearing to

  1343. Abraham on

  1344. the mountain.

  1345. We find

  1346. Moses spending

  1347. 40 days and

  1348. 40 nights with

  1349. the Lord on

  1350. the mountain

  1351. when the

  1352. table of

  1353. the law was

  1354. written out

  1355. by God's

  1356. hand.

  1357. We find

  1358. that Elijah

  1359. was recommissioned,

  1360. as it were,

  1361. and again

  1362. it was on

  1363. the mountain

  1364. to go

  1365. back to

  1366. work for

  1367. the Lord.

  1368. So here

  1369. is Jesus

  1370. with this

  1371. little group

  1372. and it

  1373. tells us

  1374. in verse

  1375. 50,

  1376. and he

  1377. and lifting

  1378. up his

  1379. hands,

  1380. he blessed

  1381. them.

  1382. And while

  1383. he blessed

  1384. them,

  1385. he parted

  1386. from them

  1387. and was

  1388. carried up

  1389. into heaven.

  1390. Lifting up

  1391. his hands.

  1392. These are the

  1393. hands that

  1394. fed the

  1395. thousands,

  1396. sins,

  1397. the hands

  1398. that had

  1399. blessed

  1400. the children,

  1401. the hands

  1402. that had

  1403. healed the

  1404. sick,

  1405. the hands

  1406. that had

  1407. been stretched

  1408. out in

  1409. invitation to

  1410. sinners to

  1411. come to

  1412. him,

  1413. the hands

  1414. that had

  1415. been nailed

  1416. to the

  1417. cross.

  1418. These are

  1419. the hands

  1420. that are

  1421. lifted up

  1422. and stretched

  1423. out over

  1424. them.

  1425. And many

  1426. people think

  1427. that this is

  1428. simply the

  1429. benediction,

  1430. like we have

  1431. in parting.

  1432. You know

  1433. how we pronounce

  1434. a benediction

  1435. in parting.

  1436. And while

  1437. definitely that

  1438. is true,

  1439. I think there's

  1440. more involved

  1441. than simply

  1442. a benediction.

  1443. Because the

  1444. whole of

  1445. scripture and

  1446. the Old

  1447. Testament has

  1448. been described

  1449. as God's

  1450. picture book

  1451. where we

  1452. see in

  1453. type and

  1454. in symbolic

  1455. way the

  1456. life of

  1457. Jesus fulfilled.

  1458. And when we

  1459. go to

  1460. Leviticus,

  1461. we read

  1462. in chapter

  1463. 8 of

  1464. how Aaron

  1465. was set

  1466. apart to

  1467. be the

  1468. high priest.

  1469. He was

  1470. to be

  1471. over all

  1472. with regard

  1473. to the

  1474. whole

  1475. sacrificial

  1476. system.

  1477. And in

  1478. chapter 9

  1479. we find

  1480. his first

  1481. official

  1482. duty was

  1483. to present

  1484. the offerings

  1485. on behalf

  1486. of the

  1487. people before

  1488. the Lord.

  1489. And we

  1490. find him

  1491. presenting the

  1492. sin offering

  1493. and the

  1494. burnt offering

  1495. and the

  1496. peace offering

  1497. the different

  1498. animals.

  1499. And then it

  1500. tells us when

  1501. he had done

  1502. all that

  1503. that he

  1504. lifted up

  1505. his hands

  1506. to bless

  1507. the people.

  1508. And as he

  1509. did that,

  1510. that fire

  1511. from the

  1512. Lord devoured

  1513. all the

  1514. sacrifice

  1515. and the

  1516. glory of

  1517. the Lord

  1518. appeared.

  1519. Because the

  1520. Lord was

  1521. at this

  1522. very moment

  1523. bearing

  1524. testimony to

  1525. the fact

  1526. that he

  1527. was accepting

  1528. the sacrifice

  1529. that the

  1530. high priest

  1531. Aaron had

  1532. made on

  1533. behalf of

  1534. the people.

  1535. And is

  1536. that not a

  1537. picture exactly

  1538. of what we

  1539. have here?

  1540. Because Jesus

  1541. is the

  1542. great high

  1543. priest and

  1544. he has

  1545. come to do

  1546. everything that

  1547. the father

  1548. gave him

  1549. to do.

  1550. And he

  1551. isn't just

  1552. the high

  1553. priest offering

  1554. the sacrifice,

  1555. he is a

  1556. sacrifice.

  1557. He is a

  1558. burnt offering,

  1559. he is a

  1560. sin offering,

  1561. he is a

  1562. peace offering,

  1563. and through

  1564. his offering

  1565. the wrath

  1566. of God

  1567. has been

  1568. removed.

  1569. And God

  1570. is declaring

  1571. over all,

  1572. I am well

  1573. pleased,

  1574. fully satisfied.

  1575. And so

  1576. there is a

  1577. sense of

  1578. the completion

  1579. and the

  1580. acceptance of

  1581. God in

  1582. the raising

  1583. of the

  1584. hands of

  1585. Jesus.

  1586. But we

  1587. mustn't also

  1588. lose sight of

  1589. indeed that

  1590. benediction

  1591. blessing.

  1592. Yes, it

  1593. is all

  1594. finished.

  1595. God and

  1596. man are

  1597. reconciled

  1598. together.

  1599. The veil of

  1600. the temple

  1601. that separated

  1602. the glory of

  1603. God was

  1604. torn from

  1605. top to

  1606. bottom.

  1607. God and

  1608. man are

  1609. now

  1610. reconciled

  1611. together.

  1612. And so

  1613. Jesus,

  1614. he raises

  1615. up his

  1616. hands and

  1617. as he

  1618. blesses

  1619. them,

  1620. we find

  1621. this

  1622. extraordinary

  1623. thing that

  1624. he's

  1625. carried up

  1626. into heaven.

  1627. That's what

  1628. we're told,

  1629. that he

  1630. parted from

  1631. them and

  1632. was carried

  1633. into heaven.

  1634. And you

  1635. know, it's a

  1636. beautiful picture,

  1637. the idea,

  1638. the picture of

  1639. Jesus rising

  1640. up with

  1641. his hands

  1642. in blessing

  1643. over the

  1644. church.

  1645. In Acts

    Acts 1:9

  1646. chapter 1

  1647. verse 9,

  1648. it tells us,

  1649. as they were

  1650. looking on,

  1651. he was lifted

  1652. up and a

  1653. cloud took

  1654. him out of

  1655. their sight.

  1656. And this

  1657. word lifted

  1658. up indicates

  1659. that the

  1660. ascension is

  1661. actually the

  1662. work of the

  1663. Father.

  1664. And then

  1665. Luke 24,

  1666. 51 tells us

  1667. they worshipped

  1668. him.

  1669. You know,

  1670. I think it's

  1671. one of the

  1672. most beautiful

  1673. scenes.

  1674. There's a lot

  1675. of scenes in

  1676. the life of

  1677. Jesus I would

  1678. love to have

  1679. been witness

  1680. to, to have

  1681. been there.

  1682. But I think

  1683. this is as

  1684. good or as

  1685. wonderful as

  1686. any.

  1687. that moment

  1688. where the

  1689. Lord Jesus

  1690. lifts up

  1691. his hand

  1692. in blessing

  1693. over his

  1694. people.

  1695. And he's

  1696. carried on

  1697. up into

  1698. heaven.

  1699. And we

  1700. find that the

  1701. church in

  1702. response to

  1703. this falls

  1704. down before

  1705. him and

  1706. worships him.

  1707. And that

  1708. has always

  1709. got to be

  1710. the response

  1711. of the

  1712. church.

  1713. It's this

  1714. worship as

  1715. the Lord

  1716. continues to

  1717. bless.

  1718. and it

  1719. tells us

  1720. that a

  1721. cloud

  1722. took him

  1723. out of

  1724. their

  1725. sight.

  1726. So some

  1727. people ask

  1728. why had

  1729. there to

  1730. be this

  1731. ascension

  1732. like this?

  1733. Well I think

  1734. very simply

  1735. Jesus is

  1736. showing,

  1737. having appeared

  1738. over this

  1739. 40 day

  1740. period,

  1741. that he

  1742. is now

  1743. finally,

  1744. that's him,

  1745. that he's

  1746. gone to

  1747. glory.

  1748. day.

  1749. And the

  1750. cloud,

  1751. the presence

  1752. of the

  1753. cloud,

  1754. of course

  1755. again is

  1756. also symbolic

  1757. because we

  1758. find so

  1759. often in

  1760. the Bible

  1761. the presence

  1762. of the

  1763. Lord is

  1764. accompanied

  1765. by the

  1766. cloud.

  1767. In the

  1768. journey of

  1769. the Israelites

  1770. through the

  1771. wilderness,

  1772. you remember

  1773. there was

  1774. the cloud

  1775. by day

  1776. and the

  1777. pillar of

  1778. cloud by

  1779. day and

  1780. the pillar

  1781. of fire

  1782. by night,

  1783. which spoke

  1784. of the

  1785. presence of

  1786. the Lord.

  1787. The fire

  1788. to give

  1789. them light

  1790. and the

  1791. cloud there

  1792. to protect

  1793. them and

  1794. the cloud

  1795. there as

  1796. a guidance.

  1797. When the

  1798. cloud stopped,

  1799. they stopped.

  1800. When the

  1801. cloud moved,

  1802. they moved.

  1803. This was

  1804. indicating the

  1805. presence of

  1806. the Lord.

  1807. You remember

  1808. again at the

  1809. dedication of

  1810. the temple

  1811. when Solomon

  1812. had built

  1813. the temple

  1814. and dedicated

  1815. that it

  1816. tells us

  1817. that the

  1818. temple was

  1819. filled with

  1820. a cloud

  1821. which spoke

  1822. of the

  1823. glory of

  1824. God.

  1825. When Jesus

  1826. returns,

  1827. it tells us

  1828. in Revelation

  1829. he will

  1830. come in

  1831. the clouds

  1832. of heaven.

  1833. So

  1834. Jesus,

  1835. as he

  1836. disappears

  1837. into the

  1838. cloud,

  1839. we find

  1840. again in

  1841. Acts that

  1842. tells us

  1843. that two

  1844. angels appear

  1845. and tell the

  1846. disciples something

  1847. wonderful.

  1848. This

  1849. Jesus taken

  1850. up to

  1851. heaven will

  1852. come in

  1853. the same

  1854. way as

  1855. you saw

  1856. him go

  1857. into

  1858. heaven.

  1859. And what a

  1860. moment that's

  1861. going to be.

  1862. It tells us

  1863. that Jesus

  1864. will descend

  1865. from heaven.

  1866. And it

  1867. won't be a

  1868. private

  1869. descending

  1870. like the

  1871. ascension was

  1872. private only

  1873. for the

  1874. immediate

  1875. few.

  1876. But we're

  1877. told in

  1878. scripture that

  1879. this is going

  1880. to be the

  1881. most public

  1882. event that

  1883. the world

  1884. has ever

  1885. witnessed.

  1886. Now we

  1887. know that

  1888. nowadays

  1889. through the

  1890. way that

  1891. things are

  1892. able to be

  1893. broadcast,

  1894. that there

  1895. are sometimes

  1896. things are

  1897. broadcast all

  1898. over the

  1899. world.

  1900. but here

  1901. is something

  1902. and I

  1903. don't know

  1904. how it's

  1905. going to

  1906. happen.

  1907. But it's

  1908. going to

  1909. happen that

  1910. Jesus is

  1911. going to

  1912. descend from

  1913. heaven and

  1914. every eye

  1915. will see

  1916. him.

  1917. Everyone.

  1918. Everyone.

  1919. And there's

  1920. going to be

  1921. two distinct

  1922. reactions to

  1923. the return of

  1924. the Lord

  1925. Jesus Christ.

  1926. We're told

  1927. that those

  1928. who have

  1929. rejected him

  1930. will call

  1931. upon the

  1932. rocks and

  1933. to the

  1934. hills to

  1935. cover them,

  1936. to fall,

  1937. to hide

  1938. them from

  1939. the glare,

  1940. from the

  1941. face of

  1942. Jesus.

  1943. But his

  1944. people are

  1945. going to

  1946. say,

  1947. even so

  1948. come Lord

  1949. Jesus.

  1950. That's going

  1951. to be the

  1952. reaction.

  1953. There's going

  1954. to be

  1955. delight,

  1956. anticipation,

  1957. thrill in

  1958. the hearts of

  1959. his people as

  1960. they see the

  1961. descending Jesus

  1962. arrive back

  1963. into this

  1964. world.

  1965. That's why the

  1966. church does

  1967. say,

  1968. even so

  1969. come Lord

  1970. Jesus.

  1971. Christ.

  1972. So what

  1973. does the

  1974. ascension of

  1975. Christ mean

  1976. for us

  1977. tonight?

  1978. Well,

  1979. very simply

  1980. as we

  1981. conclude,

  1982. as we

  1983. said earlier,

  1984. the

  1985. ascension is

  1986. proof that

  1987. everything that

  1988. Christ was

  1989. given to do,

  1990. he did.

  1991. The

  1992. ascension is

  1993. proof that

  1994. all the

  1995. enemies Christ

  1996. came to

  1997. defeat were

  1998. defeated.

  1999. The enemy

  2000. of sin.

  2001. When you

  2002. think of all

  2003. that sin is,

  2004. it's twistedness,

  2005. it's deceit,

  2006. it's guilt,

  2007. all these

  2008. things,

  2009. Christ took

  2010. all that

  2011. upon himself.

  2012. He has

  2013. come and

  2014. he's defeated

  2015. the enemy

  2016. of death

  2017. with all

  2018. its fears

  2019. and with

  2020. all its

  2021. darkness,

  2022. with all

  2023. its separation

  2024. because he's

  2025. taken the

  2026. sting out

  2027. of death.

  2028. We know

  2029. unless the

  2030. Lord returns

  2031. first that we

  2032. will die.

  2033. But while

  2034. it is natural

  2035. to fear,

  2036. death,

  2037. we know

  2038. that the

  2039. sting of

  2040. death has

  2041. been removed.

  2042. He has

  2043. defeated

  2044. Satan,

  2045. that

  2046. malicious,

  2047. ferocious

  2048. enemy that

  2049. we have.

  2050. He has

  2051. defeated

  2052. him.

  2053. He has

  2054. defeated

  2055. hell,

  2056. that place

  2057. of outer

  2058. darkness

  2059. and eternal

  2060. separation,

  2061. so that

  2062. all who

  2063. trust in

  2064. Jesus are

  2065. delivered.

  2066. And he's

  2067. also ascended

  2068. into heaven

  2069. to make

  2070. continual

  2071. intercession

  2072. for us.

  2073. We've

  2074. said it

  2075. before,

  2076. the intercession

  2077. of Jesus

  2078. is not

  2079. Jesus at

  2080. the right

  2081. hand of the

  2082. Father pleading

  2083. on our

  2084. behalf saying,

  2085. Father,

  2086. forgive them,

  2087. they can't

  2088. help it.

  2089. Father,

  2090. forgive them,

  2091. they're

  2092. sinners and

  2093. they're unable

  2094. to break

  2095. these habits.

  2096. not

  2097. no,

  2098. he intercedes

  2099. by presenting

  2100. what he

  2101. has done

  2102. on our

  2103. behalf.

  2104. That the

  2105. Father is

  2106. looking on

  2107. the fulfilled

  2108. work of

  2109. Jesus which

  2110. is shown

  2111. by a

  2112. continual

  2113. intercession

  2114. on our

  2115. behalf.

  2116. He's also

  2117. gone to

  2118. prepare a

  2119. place for

  2120. us.

  2121. Now he

  2122. did that

  2123. when the

  2124. first part

  2125. of the

  2126. preparation

  2127. of that

  2128. place was

  2129. leaving

  2130. heaven,

  2131. coming into

  2132. this

  2133. world.

  2134. That

  2135. preparation

  2136. involved

  2137. living for

  2138. us in

  2139. this

  2140. world.

  2141. That

  2142. preparation

  2143. involved

  2144. dying for

  2145. us in

  2146. this

  2147. world.

  2148. Preparation

  2149. involved

  2150. rising from

  2151. the dead

  2152. and ascending

  2153. into heaven.

  2154. And all

  2155. the meantime

  2156. he is

  2157. preparing us

  2158. for that

  2159. place.

  2160. And one

  2161. day the

  2162. Lord is

  2163. going to

  2164. say,

  2165. it's time

  2166. to come

  2167. home.

  2168. Your place

  2169. is ready.

  2170. You don't

  2171. know when

  2172. it'll be,

  2173. I don't

  2174. know.

  2175. But if we

  2176. love the

  2177. Lord Jesus,

  2178. that call

  2179. will come

  2180. one day.

  2181. Time to

  2182. come home.

  2183. Your place

  2184. is ready.

  2185. Because Jesus

  2186. has gone to

  2187. heaven to

  2188. prepare that

  2189. place.

  2190. And it

  2191. tells us

  2192. the disciples

  2193. worshipped him

  2194. and returned

  2195. with great

  2196. joy.

  2197. And they

  2198. were continually

  2199. praising and

  2200. blessing God

  2201. in the

  2202. temple.

  2203. It's very

  2204. interesting that

  2205. the gospel

  2206. according to

  2207. Luke of

  2208. 24 chapters,

  2209. Luke begins

  2210. in the

  2211. temple,

  2212. telling us

  2213. about

  2214. Zachariah.

  2215. Remember

  2216. John the

  2217. Baptist's

  2218. father?

  2219. Zachariah was

  2220. offering the

  2221. sacrifice when

  2222. the angel

  2223. came to

  2224. tell about

  2225. that Elizabeth

  2226. was to have

  2227. the baby.

  2228. That's where

  2229. it begins in

  2230. the temple.

  2231. And 24

  2232. chapters later,

  2233. it ends in

  2234. the temple

  2235. with the

  2236. Lord's people

  2237. praising God.

  2238. And in

  2239. between

  2240. chapter 1

  2241. and chapter

  2242. 24,

  2243. 24, we

  2244. have the

  2245. most remarkable

  2246. account of

  2247. the greatest

  2248. life that was

  2249. ever lived in

  2250. this world,

  2251. the life of

  2252. Jesus.

  2253. What does

  2254. the life of

  2255. Jesus mean to

  2256. you tonight?

  2257. Is the life of

  2258. Jesus a life

  2259. that has changed

  2260. you?

  2261. Is it a life

  2262. that you're so

  2263. thankful for?

  2264. Or does

  2265. the life of

  2266. Jesus just

  2267. simply interest

  2268. you?

  2269. Or does it

  2270. not really

  2271. mean much

  2272. at all?

  2273. Well, if

  2274. you've never

  2275. really thought

  2276. about it,

  2277. it's time you

  2278. started thinking

  2279. about it.

  2280. Because his

  2281. life is the

  2282. only life that

  2283. can change

  2284. you and

  2285. fulfill and

  2286. make your

  2287. life what

  2288. nobody else

  2289. and nothing

  2290. else.

  2291. can make

  2292. it.

  2293. Let us

  2294. pray.

  2295. Oh, Lord,

  2296. our God,

  2297. we give

  2298. thanks for

  2299. the transforming

  2300. power of

  2301. Jesus Christ.

  2302. We give

  2303. thanks for

  2304. the great

  2305. account of

  2306. his life,

  2307. of his

  2308. death,

  2309. of his

  2310. resurrection,

  2311. and of his

  2312. ascension.

  2313. And we

  2314. give thanks

  2315. that he

  2316. continues to

  2317. make intercession

  2318. for us.

  2319. And how

  2320. thankful we

  2321. are for

  2322. everything that

  2323. your word

  2324. reveals to

  2325. us of

  2326. him.

  2327. We pray

  2328. to bless

  2329. us in

  2330. each and

  2331. every one

  2332. of us.

  2333. Take us

  2334. to our

  2335. home safety

  2336. and grant

  2337. us your

  2338. grace in

  2339. all that

  2340. we're about.

  2341. Lord, we

  2342. pray your

  2343. blessing on

  2344. the fellowship

  2345. tonight and

  2346. again on

  2347. all those

  2348. who have,

  2349. as usual,

  2350. done so

  2351. much behind

  2352. the scenes.

  2353. Grant us

  2354. your grace in

  2355. all that we

  2356. do and

  2357. forgive us

  2358. our every

  2359. sin in

  2360. Jesus'

  2361. name.

  2362. Amen.

  2363. we're

  2364. going to

  2365. conclude

  2366. singing in

  2367. Psalm 68

  2368. from the

  2369. Scottish

  2370. Psalter.

  2371. Psalm number

  2372. 68 from

  2373. the

  2374. Scottish

  2375. Psalter.

  2376. And we're

  2377. going to

  2378. sing verses

  2379. 18 to

  2380. 20.

  2381. verses

  2382. 18 to

  2383. 20.

  2384. Thou hast,

  2385. O Lord,

  2386. most glorious,

  2387. ascended up

  2388. on high,

  2389. and in

  2390. triumph,

  2391. victorious,

  2392. led,

  2393. captive,

  2394. captivity.

  2395. Thou hast

  2396. received gifts

  2397. for men,

  2398. for such as

  2399. did rebel,

  2400. yea,

  2401. even for

  2402. them,

  2403. that God

  2404. the Lord

  2405. in midst

  2406. of them

  2407. might dwell.

  2408. blessed

  2409. be the

  2410. Lord,

  2411. who is

  2412. to us

  2413. of our

  2414. salvation

  2415. God,

  2416. who daily

  2417. with his

  2418. benefits

  2419. as

  2420. plenteously

  2421. doth load.

  2422. He of

  2423. salvation

  2424. is the

  2425. God,

  2426. who is

  2427. our

  2428. God

  2429. most

  2430. strong,

  2431. and unto

  2432. God

  2433. the

  2434. Lord

  2435. from

  2436. death

  2437. the

  2438. issues

  2439. do

  2440. belong.

  2441. 18 to

  2442. 20,

  2443. Psalm 68,

  2444. the

  2445. Scottish

  2446. Psalter.

  2447. Thou hast,

  2448. O Lord,

  2449. most

  2450. glorious.

  2451. Thou hast,

  2452. the Lord

  2453. most

  2454. glorious.

  2455. Ascended

  2456. upon

  2457. high,

  2458. and in

  2459. triumph

  2460. victorious

  2461. led

  2462. captive,

  2463. captivity.

  2464. thou hast

  2465. received

  2466. gifts

  2467. for men,

  2468. for such

  2469. as did

  2470. rebel,

  2471. yea,

  2472. in for

  2473. them

  2474. that

  2475. got

  2476. the

  2477. Lord,

  2478. in

  2479. midst

  2480. of

  2481. them

  2482. might

  2483. dwell.

  2484. Blessed

  2485. be

  2486. the

  2487. Lord,

  2488. who is

  2489. to

  2490. us

  2491. of

  2492. our

  2493. salvation

  2494. God,

  2495. God,

  2496. who

  2497. daily

  2498. with

  2499. his

  2500. benefits

  2501. as

  2502. plentiously

  2503. doth

  2504. Lord,

  2505. he

  2506. of

  2507. salvation

  2508. is

  2509. the

  2510. God,

  2511. who

  2512. is

  2513. our

  2514. God

  2515. most

  2516. strong,

  2517. and

  2518. unto

  2519. God,

  2520. the

  2521. Lord

  2522. from

  2523. death,

  2524. he

  2525. is

  2526. to

  2527. belong.

  2528. Now,

  2529. may the

  2530. grace,

  2531. mercy,

  2532. and peace

  2533. of God,

  2534. the

  2535. Father,

  2536. Son,

  2537. and Holy

  2538. Spirit,

  2539. rest and

  2540. abide upon

  2541. each one

  2542. of you

  2543. now and

  2544. forevermore.

  2545. Amen.

  2546. I'll go to

  2547. the door

  2548. on my

  2549. left here.

  2550. Amen.

  2551. Amen.

  2552. Amen.
