  20. For like the Lord our God is good

  21. His mercy is forever sure

  22. His truth at all times firmly stood

  23. And shall come each truly to endure

  24. Let's unite our hearts in prayer. Let us pray.

  25. Our Father in heaven we gather in your name today at the beginning of a new year

  26. thankful for these words that we have sung

  27. they remind us that we are not alone in this world

  28. but that we join in with a chorus of your people

  29. that nations of the world as a new year has begun

  30. although many have begun in celebrations that seem to have no thought of you

  31. we thank you that you have your people to all ends of the earth

  32. who have brought in a new year

  33. with a sense of adoration of who you are

  34. a sense of praise and worship towards you

  35. setting a new year that is before us Lord into your hands

  36. and that you would be the one who we begin looking to

  37. and the one who goes before us in it

  38. the one who knows the beginning and the end

  39. as we have been reminded of your word recently

  40. you are the alpha and the omega the beginning and the end of all things

  41. and we do praise your name oh Lord and thankful that we can come to you

  42. and sing to you with a cheerful voice and serve you with all our hearts

  43. the psalmist asks the question why

  44. why should we praise you in all of these ways

  45. and the psalm says the Lord our God is good

  46. his mercy is forever sure

  47. whose truth at all times firmly stood

  48. and shall from age to age endure

  49. and as we oh Lord see all that's ahead of us

  50. with so much uncertainty

  51. we thank you Lord that your truth is with us

  52. that you are with us

  53. that you are the one who has endured through all generations

  54. and the one whose truth endures to us today

  55. and going forward as well

  56. and we thank you that your truth is light to us

  57. that it sheds light on our paths

  58. and shows us the ways to go

  59. that you direct us by your word and by your spirit

  60. and we do pray to know that oh Lord

  61. as we go into all that lies ahead of us

  62. that we would know your light with us

  63. that we would know your mercy with us day by day

  64. and we do just praise you this day Lord

  65. that you are one who hears us

  66. that one who is with us

  67. one who hears our cries

  68. who hears our prayers

  69. who hears our groans

  70. who hears all that comes to our lips

  71. and even into our hearts

  72. and yet you remember us Lord in mercy

  73. and so we do praise your name this day

  74. help us that our hearts will be filled with worship

  75. and praise of you

  76. not just for this day but in all the days ahead

  77. Lord we know that even as we begin a new year

  78. we are so often reminded that there are these highs and lows

  79. in our experience that are prepared by you

  80. and known unto you even at this point

  81. there's nothing hidden from you

  82. and Lord as we do seek good upon us

  83. we do seek it for all around us

  84. for all the people of this world

  85. here in our own community Lord

  86. we do pray that as we look back and reflect over a year gone by

  87. as we do so Lord

  88. with much to give thanks for

  89. and much thanks for your grace in every circumstance

  90. we do look ahead as well Lord

  91. asking that your blessing

  92. your peace would be over us as a people

  93. and we see so much going on around us

  94. that seeks to take away from you and your cause

  95. we think of our Lord's day

  96. and how we treat it

  97. and how it's treated by others

  98. we do pray that you will guard it in our communities

  99. and help us to honour you

  100. on that day and every day

  101. that all that we would do would be

  102. for your glory and for your good

  103. teach us Lord that we need you

  104. in every way

  105. teach us Lord that whatever we do

  106. whether we eat or drink

  107. it is to be to your glory

  108. and we thank you that you have given so much

  109. that we should give thanks for

  110. even the simple things in life

  111. even the air that we breathe

  112. and the food that we enjoy

  113. the fellowship that we have with one another

  114. the family and friends that we have around us

  115. the work opportunities

  116. the homes

  117. our communities as a whole Lord

  118. there are so many things that we do take for granted

  119. and we just thank you Lord

  120. for every day we have to enjoy these things

  121. and so may our weeks be filled

  122. with praise and delight in you

  123. may our weeks and our months

  124. that lie before us Lord

  125. be times when we see

  126. in the midst of the changing seasons

  127. of nature as we go through winter

  128. as we see the darkness

  129. the gales

  130. the anxieties that they bring

  131. may we see the spring that reminds us

  132. of a new growth

  133. a newness of life

  134. reminding us Lord that you are the one

  135. who is able to take from darkness into light

  136. and that you are the one

  137. who is able to give life

  138. even in the midst of

  139. such difficult times

  140. and we thank you that your gospel

  141. is what gives life

  142. and we pray that

  143. all the seed that has been sown

  144. of the gospel over many years

  145. here and throughout our lands

  146. that it would bear much fruit in our midst

  147. we do pray Lord

  148. that we would see

  149. great summer seasons of harvest

  150. that we would see times of

  151. great growth and delighting in you

  152. and that we would see a great harvest coming

  153. of people coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ

  154. we thank you that the world in which we live

  155. reminds us of the changing seasons

  156. in nature but also

  157. the seasons that we experience in our lives

  158. and even in our church experience too

  159. but yet we thank you that you are the one

  160. who is building his church

  161. and may you oh Lord build

  162. throughout our communities

  163. and throughout our land

  164. throughout the world

  165. may your kingdom come in power

  166. Lord we do remember so many

  167. with different needs today

  168. we know that

  169. there are those who rejoice in you

  170. and those who are sorrowing in you as well

  171. we know a new year Lord brings times of reflection

  172. times of remembrance

  173. times of thanksgiving

  174. and times of mourning

  175. and we do pray Lord

  176. for even those who are coming into the new year

  177. in the midst of loss and grief

  178. in their own experience

  179. and do pray comfort and help

  180. and strength towards them

  181. pray for those who are unwell

  182. and those who have family members

  183. who they are concerned for

  184. Lord we just commit each one to you

  185. thankful for the services

  186. that are provided to us

  187. in our health care

  188. in our homes

  189. even with family around us Lord

  190. to support us in times of need

  191. we do pray Lord

  192. blessing and peace

  193. towards those in these times of need

  194. we do pray Lord

  195. for today's of rejoicing as well

  196. that we would be glad in you

  197. and give thanks to you

  198. as we have so often in the past

  199. when we've seen

  200. even as we think of our own congregation here

  201. new members

  202. and even this past year

  203. as we think of

  204. seeing people coming to church

  205. and coming under your word

  206. in different ways

  207. whether it's in services here

  208. or on the Friday at the Free

  209. the 55 plus

  210. the work among our young people

  211. we thank you for every opportunity

  212. we have to serve you

  213. and we just pray blessing

  214. upon all of these things

  215. that we would see

  216. a stirring up in the gospel

  217. a telling of

  218. your goodness and mercy

  219. to those who we come into contact with

  220. that the nations and peoples

  221. would hear

  222. of the wonder of God

  223. of the wonder of salvation

  224. in Christ Jesus as Lord

  225. and we pray that you will help us

  226. as a people

  227. as a congregation here

  228. to be salt and light for you

  229. to be a people

  230. who worship you

  231. first and foremost

  232. but also then

  233. a reminder of the mission

  234. of the church

  235. to reach out

  236. to those who are

  237. in darkness

  238. we would bring that gospel hope

  239. into the midst of

  240. all our people

  241. and to all ends of the earth

  242. we do remember

  243. oh Lord

  244. your people

  245. far and wide today

  246. your church

  247. near and far

  248. asking that your blessing

  249. and the light of the gospel

  250. would shine brightly

  251. in the midst of our world

  252. Lord we do commit

  253. ourselves

  254. into your hands

  255. now that you would be with us

  256. in our worship

  257. in the singing of your praise

  258. in the reading of your word

  259. and in all that we do

  260. this day

  261. and in all our days

  262. may it be to your glory

  263. hear our prayers

  264. Lord

  265. and go before us now

  266. pardoning us

  267. in all our sin

  268. that's all we ask

  455. Let all the earth come to the Lord, send forth the joyful noise.

  456. Lift up your voice, bow out to him, sing praises and rejoice.

  457. We can turn back to our reading in Psalm 96.

  458. I'm just going to look at this psalm for a short time together this afternoon as we come with the theme of worshiping God.

  459. We read at the beginning of the psalm,

  460. Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth.

  461. Sing to the Lord, bless his name.

  462. Tell of his salvation from day to day.

  463. Declare his glory among the nations.

  464. Then down at verse 10, verse 9 says,

  465. Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

  466. Tremble before him all the earth.

  467. Say among the nations, the Lord reigns.

  468. There's so much in this psalm that just gives us a focus as we begin a new year.

  469. Because as we begin a new year, we often have that sense of examining our lives,

  470. looking around us, looking within us, and just asking certain questions about what is our main goal even for this coming year.

  471. What's your main goal for 2025?

  472. Is it to please yourself?

  473. Is it to find things in life that bring you joy and happiness that you find in yourself or in things around you?

  474. Or is your main goal in 2025, as we begin a new year,

  475. to have the Lord set before you and to be looking to him and to please him?

  476. Our chief end, as we so often read in the Shorter Catechism, the first question,

  477. our chief end is to glorify God, to give glory to him and to enjoy him forever.

  478. And we find that when that is our chief end, when that is our chief goal in life,

  479. that everything else seems to fall into place, everything else seems to come together.

  480. And so it's good for us as we begin a new year to begin it with that focus of worship and of praise to God.

  481. Worship is key.

  482. William Temple was once Archbishop of Canterbury,

  483. and he gave a definition of worship as this,

  484. as the quickening the conscience by the holiness of God,

  485. feeding the mind with the truth of God,

  486. purging the imagination by the beauty of God,

  487. opening the heart to the love of God,

  488. and devoting the will to the purpose of God.

  489. It's all-encompassing when it comes to worship.

  490. It's not just a little part of our lives.

  491. It's not just a part of our lives for a certain day of the week or a time of year.

  492. Worship is all-encompassing.

  493. Everything that we do should have that aim of being worship to God.

  494. And part of our worship is, of course, coming to him in praise,

  495. coming to him in song.

  496. And the psalms that we've been singing together already today,

  497. they are psalms with that focus of a song of praise being offered up to God.

  498. And the psalm often gives us reasons to worship God.

  499. And that's going to be our focus together just now as we think of worship.

  500. We hear the call of worship in this psalm,

  501. and we see the cause of worship in this psalm.

  502. And to bring these two things together to help us to have that goal,

  503. that focus for the year ahead,

  504. to have that call to always be a people who worship God,

  505. and to have the cause that we see the reason to worship God.

  506. And what that reason brings to us then is a desire for others

  507. to know the wonders of God.

  508. Bringing in a new year so often is a place where song and music takes part of it.

  509. I'm sure many of you, maybe yesterday or even today,

  510. have listened to certain songs or have heard songs being sung,

  511. whether it's in Gaelic or in English.

  512. Which so often the new year is brought in in that way,

  513. with song to the forefront.

  514. And there's a sense of it being uplifting,

  515. and a sense of joy in the midst of it.

  516. But it doesn't always have to be a happy song.

  517. Sometimes, whether it's in Gaelic or English,

  518. we hear many songs that are full of emotion,

  519. that are sadness and sorrows.

  520. Experiences that people have gone through,

  521. and stories that are told through song

  522. that sometimes bring tears to our eyes.

  523. Other times, it's more uplifting songs,

  524. songs that fill us with a sense of joy.

  525. But isn't it good for us to bring in a new year,

  526. not just focused on the songs of this world,

  527. but the songs of God,

  528. and the praise of God.

  529. And every worship service we have,

  530. every time we come to worship God,

  531. there is song in our hearts.

  532. We come to praise God.

  533. We come to worship God in that sense of song and joy to the Lord.

  534. Because if anyone has reason for praise,

  535. if anyone has reason to sing,

  536. it is the Christian.

  537. It is the songs of rejoicing in the goodness of God to us.

  538. And as we look at the Psalms,

  539. not just the one before us,

  540. but as you go through the book of Psalms,

  541. you find that the Psalms themselves reflect the experience

  542. that we go through in life.

  543. They are not just songs that are filled with joy and laughter.

  544. There is that in them.

  545. There are times of great delight in the Lord,

  546. and we thank Him for that.

  547. But there are songs, too,

  548. that have the reality of life,

  549. the struggles in life.

  550. We have songs of lament,

  551. as they're called in the Psalms,

  552. the Psalms of lament,

  553. that give us a focus when times are difficult,

  554. and yet we can still sing to the Lord.

  555. But there are times when we just sing

  556. of the wonder, the steadfast love of God,

  557. the mercies of God,

  558. the wonders of God.

  559. We've sung in each of the Psalms that we've had today,

  560. we've sung of that,

  561. and we see it in this Psalm before us as well,

  562. Psalm 96.

  563. It is a Psalm that just brings us to see the wonder of God.

  564. But the context of Psalm 96

  565. isn't just standing alone in that sense of

  566. it's just about joy in the Lord.

  567. It's closely connected to the Psalm that comes before it,

  568. Psalm 95.

  569. They're like two Psalms that just come together.

  570. And if you read through Psalm 95,

  571. you see that it's the focus there in this outset

  572. is song as well.

  573. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  574. Let us make a joyful noise

  575. to the rock of our salvation.

  576. So there is song in that one,

  577. but it's in a slightly different setting.

  578. Psalm 94 shows almost a time of singing

  579. in the rejection of God

  580. in the midst of looking back

  581. in the experience of God's people.

  582. You go to the end of the Psalm,

  583. you see that speaking about the wilderness years,

  584. the wandering through the wilderness for 40 years,

  585. the rejection of God.

  586. And so you see that there is rejection in that Psalm.

  587. And 96 then is almost like a missional Psalm,

  588. where it's calling people back to God.

  589. And in both these experiences, there's song.

  590. There's a reminder to come to the Lord in song in Psalm 95,

  591. when we're drifting away from him,

  592. because it gives us that focus.

  593. And perhaps at the end of 2024,

  594. maybe for some people,

  595. it was a sense of drifting away from God

  596. or difficult experiences,

  597. and yet we're called to come to God in song.

  598. And then coming into a new year,

  599. it may still be difficult.

  600. There may still be many trials that we have,

  601. but we can set the Lord before us

  602. with that sense of a mission focus

  603. and a worship focus.

  604. What's more important for us in 2025?

  605. Mission or worship?

  606. It's not a trick question.

  607. It's maybe a question,

  608. is there a right answer?

  609. Do they not both go together?

  610. But there has to be an order of these things.

  611. Is mission or worship that's more important for us

  612. going into 2025?

  613. Well, John Piper, the American preacher,

  614. he said this,

  615. missions is not the ultimate goal of the church.

  616. Worship is.

  617. Missions exist because worship doesn't.

  618. The goal of missions

  619. is the gladness of the peoples

  620. in the greatness of God.

  621. Mission exists because worship doesn't.

  622. And so therefore,

  623. we begin with worship.

  624. We worship the Lord.

  625. And then from that worship comes that sense of mission

  626. because we realize that the world in which we live,

  627. not all people,

  628. not all nations worship God.

  629. And so then their mission is

  630. to make known the wonders of God to others.

  631. So we are to be worshipers first and foremost.

  632. People who acknowledge our dependence on God

  633. and who seek his favor,

  634. seek his blessings upon us

  635. and come to rejoice in him.

  636. And then we say to others,

  637. come and behold the wonders of our God.

  638. And so let's begin 2025 with a focus on this psalm.

  639. And we're going to look at it just under these two headings,

  640. the call to worship and the cause of worship.

  641. And so the first thing we see here

  642. is the call to worship.

  643. It's no surprise to us

  644. when Psalm 96,

  645. among many other psalms,

  646. begin with these words,

  647. O sing to the Lord a new song.

  648. O sing to the Lord.

  649. The psalms were songs that were to be sung.

  650. They are songs that are to be sung.

  651. Songs of praise to God.

  652. As we mentioned before,

  653. there are many experiences in this world.

  654. We see it at New Year

  655. when people begin a new year with song,

  656. singing.

  657. There are certain songs that are always sung

  658. at this time.

  659. O lang syne is one.

  660. And you hear it just comes part of New Year.

  661. And people will begin a new year

  662. singing these certain songs.

  663. But what a difference it is

  664. is to sing a song to the Lord.

  665. To sing of the goodness and mercy of God.

  666. To begin a year looking to Him.

  667. Whether the difference is,

  668. the focus is not on ourselves

  669. or on our circumstances at all times,

  670. but on the Lord.

  671. To worship the Lord first and foremost.

  672. And the opening of this psalm,

  673. Psalm 96,

  674. has that focus for us.

  675. Sing to the Lord.

  676. And you see,

  677. sing to the Lord is mentioned

  678. three times in verse 1 and 2.

  679. Sing to the Lord is there before us.

  680. And there's nothing stale,

  681. there's nothing lilteless in this thing.

  682. It's a sense of lifting up our voices to God,

  683. recognizing who He is.

  684. That we can praise Him.

  685. And it's the first thing that we see here

  686. is sing to the Lord a new song.

  687. It doesn't necessarily mean

  688. a newly composed song.

  689. But just a reminder to us

  690. of the new song that the Lord gives to us.

  691. The way He changes our tune, as it were.

  692. The way He gives us something to sing

  693. in sense of praise to Him.

  694. That His newness is there for us each day.

  695. His marshes are new each day.

  696. You know, as we begin a new year just now,

  697. it's not just singing a song

  698. that we've sung a hundred, a thousand,

  699. a million times in the past.

  700. It doesn't matter how many times you've sung it,

  701. there's still a sense of newness to it.

  702. Sing to the Lord a new song

  703. because our circumstances are new.

  704. Our day is new.

  705. Our year is new.

  706. There is a newness in this song

  707. that it doesn't lose its appetite.

  708. It doesn't lose its sense of joy and wonder.

  709. But when we're singing to the Lord,

  710. there's that sense that it's new every time.

  711. Because we thank Him for each new day.

  712. We thank Him for each new year.

  713. We thank Him for each moment of grace

  714. that He gives to us.

  715. Similar to Psalm 40

  716. that speaks of how He puts a new song

  717. in our mouth,

  718. a song of praise to God.

  719. It is the Lord

  720. that gives us that reason to sing,

  721. that new song

  722. that we are able to sing to Him.

  723. And so today,

  724. it's not an old song we're going back to.

  725. It's one that's fresh

  726. and one that's new for us today

  727. because we sing it anew.

  728. We sing it together.

  729. And maybe for some,

  730. it's singing with a new sense of delight,

  731. a new sense of joy,

  732. a new sense of thanksgiving,

  733. that the Lord opens our eyes

  734. to see how precious He is.

  735. Sing to the Lord a new song.

  736. Remember when the Lord was working

  737. in my own life,

  738. how the singing of His praise

  739. started to have a new voice to me,

  740. something that was new in it.

  741. And it was a strange place

  742. maybe to experience it,

  743. but it was standing outside

  744. the meeting house in Tolstachilish.

  745. It was at a wake

  746. on a summer's night.

  747. And there were so many

  748. in attendance at the wake.

  749. It's not a big meeting house

  750. that some were standing outside.

  751. And I was one of those

  752. who was standing outside.

  753. The Lord was maybe starting

  754. to stir in my heart,

  755. but I had no interest going there

  756. that I was there to praise God

  757. or to listen to His praise,

  758. standing outside just talking to others.

  759. But when the worship started,

  760. when the singing started,

  761. and it was coming out of the building,

  762. the door was open,

  763. and it was a glorious,

  764. still summer's evening,

  765. and the wonder of that praise

  766. just spoke.

  767. That there was something

  768. in these words,

  769. something in this singing

  770. that wasn't natural.

  771. There was a power behind it.

  772. There was a newness in it.

  773. And that's the new song

  774. that the Lord so often brings to us.

  775. When He starts to open our ears

  776. to hear the wonder of who He is,

  777. the new song that He is able to give us.

  778. And wouldn't it be wonderful

  779. if for all of us,

  780. in a sense,

  781. that new beginning this year

  782. would be with a new song,

  783. the Lord speaking to us

  784. in that powerful way.

  785. The second thing we see here,

  786. the second singing is,

  787. sing to the Lord all the earth.

  788. That there is a song for everyone.

  789. There is a song that leaves nobody out.

  790. It's a song here of the praise of God

  791. that is for the whole of the world.

  792. There is no one who is not worthy

  793. to praise God.

  794. There is no one who is unworthy

  795. of coming to sing praise to God.

  796. There is no circumstance

  797. that we find ourselves in

  798. where God cannot be praised.

  799. to sing all the earth

  800. is for everyone

  801. and in every experience.

  802. We sing a new song

  803. because of the song

  804. that Christ gives to us

  805. in our hearts.

  806. When we recognize

  807. who our Savior is,

  808. when we realize

  809. what has been done for us

  810. through Jesus Christ,

  811. for the whole world.

  812. For God so loved the world

  813. that he gave his only Son.

  814. There is an opportunity

  815. for all to praise God.

  816. That while we have this day,

  817. while we have this moment,

  818. as you go back to Psalm 95

  819. and the end of verse 7,

  820. today, if you hear his voice,

  821. do not harden your hearts

  822. as at Meribah.

  823. Do not harden your hearts

  824. as those who did in the past,

  825. but today, hear his voice.

  826. Today, sing to the Lord

  827. all the earth.

  828. There is a song here

  829. for everyone.

  830. Like I say,

  831. in every circumstance.

  832. One of my favorite psalms

  833. is Psalm 73.

  834. It's a psalm you can go to

  835. because you see there

  836. the honesty of the psalmist.

  837. When there is trouble

  838. all around him,

  839. he's not afraid

  840. to come to God

  841. with that trouble,

  842. and yet he sees himself

  843. as a beast, as it were,

  844. before the Lord.

  845. He's angry almost

  846. towards him,

  847. and yet there's this

  848. turning point in the psalm

  849. in verse 23,

  850. Psalm 73,

    Psalms 73:23

  851. verse 23,

  852. where he says,

  853. Nevertheless,

  854. I am continually

  855. with you.

  856. You hold me

  857. by my right hand.

  858. You guide me.

  859. And then you see

  860. the longing

  861. in the psalms,

  862. Whom have I in the heavens?

  863. But you, O Lord,

  864. alone.

  865. So there is this wonder

  866. of a song

  867. for everyone.

  868. Everyone of us,

  869. whether we're sitting in here,

  870. whether we're tuning in online,

  871. the Lord is there

  872. to be praised

  873. and to be sung about

  874. all the earth.

  875. Then you see

  876. there's the third,

  877. Sing to the Lord,

  878. in verse 2 there.

  879. Sing to the Lord,

  880. bless his name,

  881. tell of his salvation

  882. from day to day.

  883. There is so much

  884. to sing about.

  885. And this is not just

  886. for one day,

  887. it's every day.

  888. Sing of his salvation

  889. from day to day.

  890. We can begin

  891. every new day

  892. rejoicing in the salvation

  893. that God gives.

  894. As we have that focus,

  895. we have that call

  896. to worship,

  897. we see we are a people

  898. who are to praise.

  899. When we come

  900. into the presence of God,

  901. when we come

  902. to worship him,

  903. we see

  904. all that we have

  905. through God.

  906. His salvation

  907. is there

  908. before us all.

  909. Even today,

  910. as we begin

  911. a new year,

  912. just with that sense

  913. of focus,

  914. not on ourselves,

  915. but on the Lord.

  916. The Lord

  917. and the salvation

  918. that he has given

  919. for his people.

  920. The salvation

  921. that there is

  922. in Christ

  923. alone.

  924. so we can begin

  925. by praising

  926. him.

  927. We have

  928. a call

  929. to worship.

  930. Psalm 96,

  931. in some ways

  932. you could call it

  933. a golden oldie.

  934. It's one we can

  935. go to again

  936. and again.

  937. But still today,

  938. it's a new song.

  939. It's a new song

  940. for us

  941. to come

  942. and praise him.

  943. It's a call

  944. for us

  945. to worship him

  946. as we begin

  947. a new year.

  948. As we set

  949. the year ahead

  950. before us,

  951. we begin

  952. with a call

  953. to worship.

  954. The second thing

  955. we see here

  956. in this psalm

  957. is the cause

  958. of worship.

  959. The natural

  960. question

  961. that comes

  962. from

  963. a call

  964. to worship

  965. as we are

  966. asked to come

  967. and worship

  968. God

  969. is

  970. why?

  971. Why

  972. should we

  973. worship God?

  974. Psalm 73

  975. gave us

  976. part of that

  977. answer.

  978. Nevertheless,

  979. continually,

  980. O Lord,

  981. I am with thee.

  982. You're the one

  983. who holds me

  984. by my right hand.

  985. And there

  986. is a reason,

  987. a cause

  988. for worship.

  989. And so,

  990. so often

  991. in the psalms

  992. you find

  993. not just

  994. a call

  995. to worship,

  996. but the psalms

  997. they give us

  998. the cause

  999. of worship.

  1000. You see that

  1001. in the psalms

  1002. that we've sung

  1003. already today.

  1004. There's that sense

  1005. of coming

  1006. before the Lord

  1007. with great joy

  1008. and worship

  1009. and praise

  1010. to him.

  1011. But you see it

  1012. in Psalm 95

  1013. there,

  1014. verse 3.

  1015. there's a call

  1016. to come

  1017. and worship

  1018. God.

  1019. But then

  1020. verse 3 is

  1021. for the Lord

  1022. is a great

  1023. God

  1024. and a great

  1025. king

  1026. above

  1027. all gods.

  1028. There is

  1029. cause

  1030. to worship.

  1031. And we see

  1032. the same

  1033. here in

  1034. Psalm 96

  1035. as well.

  1036. Declare his

  1037. glory among

  1038. the nations,

  1039. his marvelous

  1040. works among

  1041. all the peoples.

  1042. For great

  1043. is the Lord

  1044. and greatly

  1045. to be praised.

  1046. He is to be

  1047. feared

  1048. above

  1049. all gods.

  1050. Splendor

  1051. and majesty

  1052. are before him.

  1053. Strength

  1054. and beauty

  1055. are in his

  1056. sanctuary.

  1057. There is

  1058. cause

  1059. to worship

  1060. God.

  1061. And so

  1062. if we ask

  1063. the question

  1064. come

  1065. and worship

  1066. God

  1067. and the people

  1068. ask why

  1069. even as they

  1070. did in the

  1071. day of the

  1072. psalmist

  1073. even as they

  1074. do in our

  1075. own day

  1076. why

  1077. should we

  1078. worship

  1079. God?

  1080. Well here

  1081. we have a

  1082. response

  1083. for great

  1084. is the

  1085. Lord

  1086. and greatly

  1087. to be

  1088. praised.

  1089. You see

  1090. the people

  1091. here

  1092. as the

  1093. psalmist

  1094. is speaking

  1095. of they

  1096. had a

  1097. problem

  1098. and it's

  1099. not a

  1100. new

  1101. problem

  1102. it's not

  1103. a problem

  1104. that's

  1105. gone

  1106. away.

  1107. What

  1108. was their

  1109. problem

  1110. what's

  1111. the problem

  1112. for so

  1113. many of

  1114. us

  1115. today?

  1116. Well we

  1117. see it

  1118. in verse

  1119. 5.

  1120. For all

  1121. the gods

  1122. of the

  1123. peoples

  1124. are

  1125. worthless

  1126. idols.

  1127. The

  1128. people

  1129. have

  1130. other

  1131. things

  1132. they

  1133. put

  1134. in

  1135. place

  1136. of

  1137. God.

  1138. So

  1139. many

  1140. begin

  1141. the

  1142. year

  1143. with

  1144. no

  1145. thought

  1146. of

  1147. God

  1148. but

  1149. worshipping

  1150. the idols

  1151. of this

  1152. world

  1153. self-made

  1154. idols.

  1155. they

  1156. are

  1157. worthless.

  1158. That's

  1159. what the

  1160. psalmist

  1161. says.

  1162. They

  1163. feared

  1164. their

  1165. gods.

  1166. It

  1167. wasn't a

  1168. new

  1169. thing.

  1170. You

  1171. see it

  1172. running

  1173. throughout

  1174. the

  1175. scriptures

  1176. where

  1177. people

  1178. have

  1179. their

  1180. own

  1181. gods

  1182. and

  1183. they

  1184. would

  1185. seek

  1186. to

  1187. satisfy

  1188. their

  1189. gods

  1190. offer

  1191. sacrifices

  1192. to

  1193. their

  1194. gods

  1195. in

  1196. the

  1197. hope

  1198. of

  1199. harvests

  1200. of

  1201. health

  1202. of

  1203. victories

  1204. and

  1205. battles

  1206. of

  1207. all

  1208. kinds

  1209. of

  1210. things

  1211. who

  1212. would

  1213. come

  1214. and

  1215. worship

  1216. their

  1217. gods

  1218. in

  1219. the

  1220. hope

  1221. that

  1222. they

  1223. would

  1224. cause

  1225. things

  1226. to

  1227. go

  1228. well

  1229. for

  1230. them.

  1231. But

  1232. it

  1233. wasn't

  1234. the

  1235. case

  1236. and

  1237. it

  1238. will

  1239. not

  1240. be

  1241. the

  1242. case

  1243. for

  1244. us

  1245. as

  1246. well.

  1247. We

  1248. are not

  1249. to

  1250. look

  1251. to

  1252. the

  1253. worthless

  1254. idols

  1255. of

  1256. this

  1257. world.

  1258. Where

  1259. does

  1260. our

  1261. help

  1262. come

  1263. from

  1264. as

  1265. we

  1266. go

  1267. into

  1268. a

  1269. new

  1270. year?

  1271. James

  1272. in the

  1273. New

  1274. Testament

  1275. speaks

  1276. of it

  1277. in this

  1278. way.

  1279. He

  1280. reminds us

  1281. where our

  1282. help

  1283. comes

  1284. from.

  1285. Every

  1286. good

  1287. gift,

  1288. every

  1289. perfect

  1290. gift,

  1291. it

  1292. comes

  1293. from

  1294. above,

  1295. coming

  1296. down

  1297. from

  1298. the

  1299. Father

  1300. of

  1301. light

  1302. with

  1303. whom

  1304. there

  1305. is

  1306. no

  1307. variation

  1308. of

  1309. shadow

  1310. due

  1311. to

  1312. change,

  1313. the

  1314. one

  1315. who

  1316. doesn't

  1317. change.

  1318. The

  1319. psalmist

  1320. here is

  1321. pointing us

  1322. towards

  1323. the

  1324. true

  1325. God.

  1326. God

  1327. but

  1328. the

  1329. Lord,

  1330. he

  1331. says,

  1332. he

  1333. made

  1334. the

  1335. heavens.

  1336. He

  1337. created

  1338. all

  1339. things.

  1340. He

  1341. made

  1342. all

  1343. things

  1344. for

  1345. his

  1346. glory.

  1347. He

  1348. has

  1349. made

  1350. us

  1351. with

  1352. that

  1353. purpose,

  1354. with

  1355. that

  1356. cause

  1357. in

  1358. our

  1359. hearts

  1360. as well

  1361. to be

  1362. a

  1363. people

  1364. who

  1365. worship

  1366. him.

  1367. And

  1368. it's

  1369. because

  1370. splendor

  1371. and

  1372. majesty,

  1373. all

  1374. of

  1375. these

  1376. things,

  1377. strength

  1378. and

  1379. beauty,

  1380. they

  1381. all

  1382. belong

  1383. to

  1384. him.

  1385. And

  1386. you

  1387. see it

  1388. there

  1389. in

  1390. verse

  1391. three

  1392. as well.

  1393. Declare

  1394. his

  1395. glory

  1396. among

  1397. the

  1398. nations.

  1399. His

  1400. marvelous

  1401. works

  1402. among

  1403. all

  1404. the

  1405. peoples.

  1406. His

  1407. marvelous

  1408. works.

  1409. Reasons

  1410. cause

  1411. to

  1412. worship.

  1413. His

  1414. marvelous

  1415. works.

  1416. Have

  1417. you

  1418. seen

  1419. his

  1420. marvelous

  1421. works?

  1422. You

  1423. have.

  1424. We

  1425. all

  1426. have.

  1427. We've

  1428. seen

  1429. it

  1430. in

  1431. so

  1432. many

  1433. different

  1434. ways.

  1435. You

  1436. see it

  1437. in so

  1438. many

  1439. different

  1440. situations.

  1441. Even

  1442. the

  1443. little

  1444. things.

  1445. Little

  1446. things that

  1447. make you

  1448. just look

  1449. and wonder

  1450. at the

  1451. amazing

  1452. wonders.

  1453. But do

  1454. you recognize

  1455. it's of

  1456. God?

  1457. You

  1458. think of

  1459. a

  1460. spider's

  1461. web.

  1462. And you

  1463. see it

  1464. with just

  1465. a little

  1466. mist

  1467. on it.

  1468. And the

  1469. sun

  1470. starting to

  1471. shine

  1472. through.

  1473. And you

  1474. see the

  1475. intricacy

  1476. of it.

  1477. The

  1478. wonder

  1479. of it.

  1480. The

  1481. wonder

  1482. of God's

  1483. creation.

  1484. You

  1485. think of

  1486. a

  1487. snowflake.

  1488. How

  1489. everyone

  1490. is

  1491. different.

  1492. And if

  1493. you look

  1494. at it

  1495. closely,

  1496. even if

  1497. you go

  1498. under a

  1499. microscope

  1500. and look

  1501. at it,

  1502. you see

  1503. the

  1504. details

  1505. in it.

  1506. You

  1507. think of

  1508. the

  1509. flowers.

  1510. You

  1511. think of

  1512. the

  1513. wonder

  1514. of the

  1515. sky.

  1516. The

  1517. sky at

  1518. night

  1519. with the

  1520. moon

  1521. and the

  1522. stars.

  1523. The

  1524. enormity

  1525. of it.

  1526. The

  1527. wonder

  1528. of God's

  1529. creation.

  1530. You

  1531. look at

  1532. yourself.

  1533. ourselves.

  1534. We

  1535. look at

  1536. ourselves

  1537. and we

  1538. see the

  1539. intricacies

  1540. of our

  1541. bodies.

  1542. How

  1543. fearfully

  1544. and

  1545. wonderfully

  1546. we

  1547. are

  1548. made.

  1549. And

  1550. these

  1551. are

  1552. the

  1553. wonders

  1554. of

  1555. God.

  1556. And

  1557. then you

  1558. look at

  1559. the

  1560. God

  1561. who made

  1562. the heavens

  1563. and the

  1564. earth,

  1565. the one

  1566. who is

  1567. behind

  1568. all of

  1569. these

  1570. things and

  1571. the power

  1572. that he

  1573. has.

  1574. and the

  1575. wonder

  1576. that he

  1577. would

  1578. remember

  1579. us.

  1580. The

  1581. wonder

  1582. that he

  1583. would

  1584. promise

  1585. to be

  1586. with us.

  1587. The

  1588. promise

  1589. that he

  1590. will never

  1591. leave us

  1592. or forsake

  1593. us.

  1594. And the

  1595. wonder

  1596. of his

  1597. grace

  1598. and his

  1599. mercy.

  1600. The

  1601. wonder

  1602. of his

  1603. salvation

  1604. for sinners.

  1605. The

  1606. wonder

  1607. of the

  1608. cross.

  1609. The

  1610. wonder

  1611. of what

  1612. he has

  1613. done

  1614. for us

  1615. there.

  1616. As his

  1617. son,

  1618. our

  1619. Lord,

  1620. gave his

  1621. life

  1622. for us.

  1623. The

  1624. wonder

  1625. of God.

  1626. The

  1627. wonders

  1628. that he

  1629. has done.

  1630. Are they

  1631. not cause

  1632. for worship?

  1633. Are they

  1634. not cause

  1635. to come

  1636. and sing

  1637. with praise

  1638. to him

  1639. the wonders

  1640. that he

  1641. has done?

  1642. And if

  1643. we see

  1644. the wonders

  1645. that he

  1646. has done

  1647. for us,

  1648. the cause

  1649. that we

  1650. have to

  1651. worship

  1652. in that,

  1653. does it

  1654. not then

  1655. lead our

  1656. hearts

  1657. to the

  1658. cause

  1659. of telling

  1660. others?

  1661. You see

  1662. that run

  1663. through this

  1664. psalm

  1665. as well.

  1666. There in

  1667. verse 3

  1668. it says

  1669. to us

  1670. declare

  1671. his glory

  1672. among the

  1673. nations,

  1674. his marvelous

  1675. work,

  1676. the wonders

  1677. that he

  1678. has done.

  1679. In

  1680. verse

  1681. 10 it

  1682. says the

  1683. same thing,

  1684. say among

  1685. the nations,

  1686. the Lord

  1687. reigns.

  1688. He is

  1689. king.

  1690. He is

  1691. king over

  1692. all.

  1693. The wonders

  1694. that God

  1695. has done

  1696. for us,

  1697. they are

  1698. the cause

  1699. of our

  1700. worship,

  1701. and they

  1702. are the

  1703. cause

  1704. to our

  1705. mission

  1706. as well

  1707. to tell

  1708. others.

  1709. Missions

  1710. exist

  1711. because

  1712. worship

  1713. doesn't.

  1714. And while

  1715. there is

  1716. no worship

  1717. in the

  1718. lives of

  1719. those around

  1720. us,

  1721. it is our

  1722. mission

  1723. to make

  1724. known

  1725. the wonders

  1726. of the

  1727. Lord.

  1728. And what

  1729. greater way

  1730. to make

  1731. it known

  1732. than to

  1733. worship

  1734. the Lord,

  1735. to sing

  1736. to the

  1737. Lord.

  1738. Somebody

  1739. once said

  1740. you cannot

  1741. worship

  1742. God as

  1743. you ought

  1744. until you

  1745. know him

  1746. as he

  1747. is.

  1748. And you

  1749. cannot know

  1750. the true

  1751. God

  1752. until you

  1753. know him

  1754. in his

  1755. benefits.

  1756. And you

  1757. do not

  1758. know him

  1759. in his

  1760. benefits

  1761. until you

  1762. know him

  1763. in the

  1764. sacrifice

  1765. of his

  1766. son,

  1767. Jesus

  1768. Christ,

  1769. who died

  1770. in our

  1771. place,

  1772. that we

  1773. might become

  1774. the

  1775. righteousness

  1776. of God

  1777. in him.

  1778. Our

  1779. mission

  1780. begins

  1781. with

  1782. worship

  1783. and

  1784. worshiping

  1785. the

  1786. Lord

  1787. in the

  1788. splendor

  1789. of

  1790. holiness

  1791. and

  1792. recognizing

  1793. what he

  1794. has done

  1795. for us.

  1796. He has

  1797. given us

  1798. a new

  1799. day.

  1800. He has

  1801. given us

  1802. a new

  1803. year,

  1804. a time

  1805. and a

  1806. place

  1807. and a

  1808. people,

  1809. to be

  1810. a people

  1811. of worship

  1812. to him.

  1813. So what

  1814. is our

  1815. goal as

  1816. we go

  1817. into

  1818. 2025?

  1819. To

  1820. please

  1821. ourselves

  1822. or to

  1823. please

  1824. him.

  1825. May it

  1826. be that

  1827. we please

  1828. him

  1829. and do

  1830. so by

  1831. worshiping

  1832. him

  1833. in the

  1834. right way,

  1835. by giving

  1836. all praise

  1837. and glory

  1838. to him.

  1839. We have

  1840. a call

  1841. to this

  1842. and we

  1843. have a

  1844. cause

  1845. for this.

  1846. It is

  1847. the

  1848. Lord.

  1849. I'll leave

  1850. you with

  1851. these words

  1852. as we

  1853. think of

  1854. what we

  1855. do for

  1856. ourselves

  1857. or what

  1858. we do

  1859. for the

  1860. Lord.

  1861. Dear

  1862. Master,

  1863. for this

  1864. coming

  1865. year,

  1866. just one

  1867. request

  1868. I bring.

  1869. I do

  1870. not pray

  1871. for happiness

  1872. or any

  1873. earthly

  1874. thing.

  1875. I do

  1876. not ask

  1877. to understand

  1878. the way

  1879. thou leadest

  1880. me,

  1881. but this

  1882. I ask,

  1883. teach me

  1884. to do

  1885. the thing

  1886. that pleaseth

  1887. thee.

  1888. I want

  1889. to know

  1890. thy guiding

  1891. voice,

  1892. to walk

  1893. with thee

  1894. each day.

  1895. Dear

  1896. Master,

  1897. make me

  1898. swift

  1899. to hear

  1900. and ready

  1901. to obey.

  1902. And thus

  1903. the year

  1904. I now

  1905. begin,

  1906. a happy

  1907. year will

  1908. be,

  1909. if I am

  1910. seeking

  1911. just to

  1912. do

  1913. the thing

  1914. that

  1915. pleaseth

  1916. thee.

  1917. What

  1918. pleases

  1919. the Lord

  1920. more than

  1921. worshipping

  1922. him and

  1923. setting him

  1924. before us

  1925. in all

  1926. things and

  1927. above

  1928. all things?

  1929. The Lord

  1930. is worthy

  1931. of praise.

  1932. Let us

  1933. sing a

  1934. new song

  1935. to him.

  1936. Let us

  1937. pray.

  1938. Lord,

  1939. our

  1940. gracious

  1941. God,

  1942. we rejoice

  1943. in the

  1944. hope that

  1945. we have

  1946. in you,

  1947. the hope

  1948. and the

  1949. wonders that

  1950. you have

  1951. shown towards

  1952. us,

  1953. and above

  1954. all the

  1955. wonders of

  1956. your salvation,

  1957. that you are

  1958. one who has

  1959. remembered us,

  1960. one who has

  1961. done us

  1962. good,

  1963. and one

  1964. who has

  1965. promised to

  1966. go before

  1967. us.

  1968. And so,

  1969. Lord,

  1970. we do

  1971. pray that

  1972. you will

  1973. be a

  1974. God who

  1975. leads us,

  1976. thankful for

  1977. the salvation

  1978. that we

  1979. have in

  1980. Christ Jesus,

  1981. and thankful

  1982. for the

  1983. mission that

  1984. we have,

  1985. to be a

  1986. people of

  1987. worship and

  1988. to be a

  1989. people of

  1990. showing forth

  1991. your praise

  1992. to others.

  1993. Lord,

  1994. may this

  1995. be a year

  1996. when we

  1997. seek to

  1998. do the

  1999. thing that

  2000. pleases

  2001. thee.

  2002. Lord,

  2003. hear our

  2004. prayers and

  2005. go before

  2006. us now,

  2007. pardoning our

  2008. sin in

  2009. Jesus'

  2010. name.

  2011. Amen.

  2012. We're going

  2013. to conclude

  2014. by singing

  2015. these words

  2016. that we've

  2017. been looking

  2018. at in

  2019. Psalm 96.

  2020. In the

  2021. Sing

  2022. Psalms

  2023. version,

  2024. 96a,

  2025. page

  2026. 126.

  2027. We'll

  2028. sing the

  2029. first three

  2030. stanzas,

  2031. verse 1

  2032. to 6.

  2033. Psalm 96a,

  2034. page 126,

  2035. the tune is

  2036. Effingham.

  2037. O sing a

  2038. new song to

  2039. the Lord,

  2040. sing praises to

  2041. his name,

  2042. and his

  2043. salvation day

  2044. by day let

  2045. all the

  2046. earth proclaim.

  2047. We stand

  2048. to sing to

  2049. God's praise.

  2050. O sing a

  2051. new song to

  2052. the Lord,

  2053. sing praises

  2054. to his

  2055. name,

  2056. and his

  2057. salvation

  2058. day by

  2059. day let

  2060. all the

  2061. earth

  2062. proclaim.

  2063. His

  2064. glory

  2065. and

  2066. his

  2067. mighty

  2068. peace

  2069. to

  2070. every

  2071. land

  2072. declare

  2073. !

  2074. How great

  2075. and

  2076. awesome

  2077. is

  2078. the

  2079. Lord

  2080. within

  2081. the

  2082. God's

  2083. compare.

  2084. name,

  2085. and

  2086. the

  2087. Lord

  2088. For

  2089. cross

  2090. and

  2091. word

  2092. and

  2093. stone,

  2094. the

  2095. Lord

  2096. made

  2097. heaven's

  2098. night.

  2099. Of

  2100. power

  2101. and

  2102. majesty

  2103. are

  2104. his,

  2105. he

  2106. dwells

  2107. in

  2108. glorious

  2109. light.

  2110. Now may

  2111. grace,

  2112. mercy,

  2113. and peace

  2114. from God,

  2115. Father,

  2116. Son,

  2117. and Holy

  2118. Spirit rest

  2119. upon and

  2120. abide with

  2121. you all

  2122. now and

  2123. forevermore.

  2124. Amen.

  2125. I'll go to

  2126. the main

  2127. door just

  2128. now.
